Falklanders overwhelmingly vote for UK over Argentina

After the people of the Falkland Islands clearly declared their desire to remain a UK overseas territory, David Cameron called on Argentina to respect their wishes.

"The Falkland islanders couldn't have spoken more clearly. They want to remain British and that view should be respected by everybody, including by Argentina." he said, adding “We will always defend the islands. Of 1,517 votes cast in the two-day referendum, just three votes were against. There was a turnout of more than 90% from 1,672 British citizens eligible to vote in a population of about 2,900. The

referendum

had

asked: "Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?"

Governor Nigel Haywood said: "Obviously it is a major principle of the United Nations that a people have their right to self-determination, and you don't get a much clearer expression of the people's self-determination than such a large turnout and such a large 'yes' vote." CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

ICKHAM’S

vote for UK over Argentina

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

Sickie For the last two weeks I have joined with many people on this coast suffering from the dreaded ‘flu. I have had people saying “You look dreadful” (thanks!) and “you should be at home in bed!” Well, yes, a nice warm bed and a cup of cocoa sounds absolutely marvelous but, as most people who are self employed will tell you, it’s a luxury you simply can’t afford. luckily, our office is quite big so I can tuck myself in my corner and, hopefully not infect anyone else but, to all of those of you out there suffering with the same thing, I hope you feel better soon – this is horrid and I’m not good at being a sickie at all – I get bored and fed up with it! This past couple of weeks I have had two of my cats in the vet’s as well. The kitten, Grubby, managed to get himself into a fight and it looks like he has had one of his back pads bitten which had turned quite nasty. The new vet over in la Trocha was very good and spent a long time making sure it was properly cleaned and now we have the great task of getting antibiotics down him (the cat that is, not the vet!) and, as anyone who has ever tried that with a cat will tell you, once it has shredded the curtains, the sofa, you, and anything else in its path, it’s easy! On the good news front, the little cat that had been found and whose owner who had gone back to the uK we needed to trace is to be re-united with his mum on the Isle of Wight. She was absolutely delighted and I’ll tell you more about it all next week.

Dick Sawle, a member of the island's legislative assembly, said it was an "absolutely phenomenal result which will send out the strongest possible message to the rest of the world about our right to self-determination – a right that was fought for in 1982, and which we have honoured tonight." He said the islanders had "very, very clearly said they wish to remain as a British overseas territory with those rights", and it would "be our job now as a government to get that message out to the rest of the world and every country that will listen to us". He added: "What is

very clear is that these islands never have belonged to Argentina; what is also extremely clear to me here, and from the results that we heard tonight, is that they never will do."

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "We have always been clear that we believe in the rights of the Falklands people to determine their own futures and to decide on the path they wish to take. It is only right that, in the 21st century, these rights are respected." Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de

Kirchner has maintained that the Falkland islanders' wishes are not relevant in what is a territorial issue. Most Argentines regard the islands – which they call Las Malvinas – as Argentine and their recovery is enshrined in the national constitution.

it's going to change the mind of the government," she said. "It might change the mind of the Argentines. "Most of the Argentines think that the territory, the land, belongs to the Argentine map. But most of them also think that the islanders are entitled to believe or feel themselves like the true inhabitants of the islands after almost nine generations."

Carolina Barros, editor of the Buenos Aires Herald, said the referendum result was "quite a blow and big news for any Argentine saying that the Malvinas islands belong to Argentina, or that the islanders living there are an implanted population". "I don't think

Pope watch - Cardinals set to elect new pontiff

Cardinals, gathered in Rome to elect a new pope, began voting yesterday – with no clear frontrunner in sight. The 115 cardinal-electors – all under 80 years of age, as those over 80 are excluded – attended a special Mass in the morning, before entering the Sistine Chapel. After they took an oath of secrecy, Monsignor Guido Marini, papal master of ceremonies, called out the words "Extra omnes" – "Everybody out" – and the chapel doors were locked to outsiders. From today, Wednesday, two votes will be held each morning and afternoon – with ballots

burned after each session – until one candidate attains a two-thirds majority (77 votes). Then the smoke will be white, meaning the 266th Bishop of Rome will have been chosen. Extensive measures are taken to prevent details about the cardinals' discussions over the next pope becoming public. On Monday, some 90 staff who will support the cardinals during their time of seclusion – including waiters, cleaners, drivers and

WEATHER WEATHER

medical staff – took an oath of secrecy. The Sistine Chapel itself will be swept daily for bugs. The challenges of leading a Church beset by problems ranging from the sexual abuse scandal to accusations of corruption at the Vatican bank proved too much for the 85-year-old Benedict XVI, now known as Pope emeritus. They lie ahead for his successor – once he is elected. Candidates named as contenders include Cardinal Angelo Scola of

Milan, Brazil's Odilo Scherer, and the US Cardinal Timothy Dolan – though he told one interviewer anyone who thought he was in with a chance might be "smoking marijuana". Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was the marked favourite ahead of the 2005 conclave that elected him pope after just four rounds of voting, but the vote for his successor is expected to take much longer as there appears to be no clear frontrunner this time.

territories including South Georgia were also seized. In two months of fighting after the UK military responded, 255 British and about 650 Argentine servicemen were killed, along with three Falklands’ civilians, before the Argentine forces surrendered.

the

National News Ninth anniversary of Madrid train bombings Several ceremonies were held in Madrid on Monday to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the March 2004 train bombings – the biggest terrorist attack in Spain since the transition to democracy after Franco's death in 1975.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was the first to refer to the Al Qaedaperpetrated attacks, which claimed the lives of 191 people on several trains heading for Atocha, the capital's main station on March 11th. At a breakfast meeting, the PM told businessmen, members of the government and the Partido Popular that he was committed to the “eradication of the ferocious enemies of freedom and democracy", adding that "they will never defeat us”. Earlier that morning Madrid

regional premier Ignacio González and Mayor Ana Botella, laid a wreath at a plaque commemorating the victims of the attack in Puerta del Sol.

Also attending the ceremony were Justice Minister Alberto RuizGallardón and Education, Culture and Sport Minister José Ignacio Wert, as well as the presidents of the Association of Terrorism Victims and the

Association of 11-M Victims, Ángeles Pedraza and Ángeles Domínguez. Another ceremony was held later in the day near Atocha station.

Man cleared of Garry Walton death Darren Saptead, who was accused of killing a tourist in Tenerife by throwing him overboard from a boat in 1996 has been cleared by a jury on the island. Garry Walton, 21, of County Waterford, Ireland, drowned on an excursion off Playa de Las Americas in November 1996.

Sapstead, now 38, of Chelmsford, Essex, denied homicide. The jurors said they had based their decision essentially on the "many contradictions" in the testimonies of sisters Katie and Lucy Smethurst, who incriminated Sapstead nearly a year after the incident. Katie Smethurst told Manchester Police in September 1997 that she had seen Mr Sapstead "grab Mr Walton, around the knees and push him into the sea" over a rail at the back of the boat. About 50 young British

and Irish tourists were on board a party cruise. Her sister Lucy told the court that the defendant had visited their hotel shortly after the drowning "to warn them to keep quiet about it". In their written verdict the jury said "the sisters changed their story many times between 1996 and today whereas the defendant has always given the same version since the beginning". Speaking outside court,

The accused Darren Sapstead

Sapstead said: "This has cost me a business and nearly 17 years of my life." He said he had spent time in five different Spanish jails after his extradition, and added: "The Spanish justice system is a joke."

The family of Mr Walton, who grew up in Leeds and moved to Ireland with his parents at the age of 15, were in court for the trial and verdict but did not speak to reporters afterwards.

The commission had hoped to arrange a meeting in Norway between representatives of the Spanish government and ETA but the idea was rejected by the Spanish authorities, which continue to seek to bring all the ETA terrorists still at large to justice.

When the presence of ETA members in Norway was made public recently, the authorities there expelled them. The commission, which will shut down talks if no progress is made, wants the group to disarm, recognise the harm it has done to victims and accept a non-blanket deal for the release of ETA prisoners.

Iberia unions close to agreement International Airlines Group (IAG) has accepted a compromise proposal drawn up by the government-appointed mediator Gregorio Tudela which will reduce job losses from 3,807 to 3,141 and increase severance pay. The unions have said they are largely in favour

of the proposal and will make a formal decision by Wednesday. Hundreds of daily Iberia flights have been cancelled in recent weeks due to worker strikes over the original plans to scrap 3,807 jobs, a move which the IAG says is essential if the Spanish airline is to survive. Pilots, flight stewards

and ground crew have already staged two fiveday strikes and the third is planned for March 18th to 22nd. They have also threatened to strike again during Easter week.

The company loses â‚Ź3 million every day Iberia workers strike, IAG chief executive Willie Walsh has said.

Some 500 workers, including waiters who attend members of the royal family and gardeners who work at sites owned by National Heritage, are to go on strike during Easter week to protest against changes made to their working conditions.

The CSI-F union said they will lay down tools on March 28th and 29th

in protest against an extension of their working week to 37 hours from 35 hours and the introduction of what the union described as unpaid overtime. It will be the first strike by servants of the Crown since democracy was restored after the death of Franco.

In a document submitted to the central

government’s provincial delegation in Madrid, the union said individual members of the Royal Household staff will also file protests in Madrid labour courts about unilateral changes to the conditions stipulated in their collective agreement.

The union sources said workers may take industrial action during

official events, which could upset the royal family's agenda. The two-day strike will coincide with a holiday period when some 100,000 people visit sites owned by National Heritage, such as the Royal Palace in Madrid and the monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, where entrance fees are from €10 to €17.

Spy chief should explain king's 'girlfriend' Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz said last week that it was up to the head of the National Intelligence Centre (CNI) to explain the working relationship, if any, between the German princess, Corinna zu SaynWittgenstein, and the agency. Before an EU meeting in Brussels, the minister refused to answer reporters’ questions about Sayn-Wittgenstein's

connections with the monarchy and comments she has made to magazines like Hola. CNI director Félix Sanz Roldán will appear before a closed-door session of Parliament on March 19th to offer explanations demanded by the United Left (IU, Izquierda Unida). In the magazine interviews, SaynWittgenstein, who works as

a public relations consultant, claimed to have undertaken top secret and classified jobs for the Spanish government. She first made the headlines last year when it was discovered that she had accompanied King Juan Carlos on his controversial elephant hunt in Botswana in April, when he fell and broke his hip. The German princess has

also figured in the Nóos Institute inquiry after a number of emails turned over by one of the defendants showed she corresponded with royal son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin about a job she was trying to secure for him. Urdangarin is under investigation for allegedly diverting public funds from the non-profit entity that he ran.

Monday petrol price probed

the national Energy Commission (CnE) is investigating petrol station operators after observing that some companies have been lowering their fuel prices on Mondays, and then raising them in time for the peak demand time at the weekend. a CnE spokesman said it suspected that the ruse has been adopted to lower the reported cost of fuel in the country in the European Union's Petroleum Bulletin. the figures in the report are collated from price checks taken at petrol stations across the country on Mondays. the CnE has found that on more than 70 per cent of Mondays during 2012 the price of petrol fell in relation to the previous day, and was raised again on tuesday. US warns about proposed “Coca-Cola tax”

it has become known that United States ambassador alan D. Solomont met with Catalan regional premier arthur Mas in Barcelona in February to discuss the potential impact on american beverage companies – primarily Coca-Cola and Pepsi – of his plan to tax soft drinks.

Solomont said the tax would be detrimental for these US companies in Catalonia, considering that Coca-Cola and Pepsi hold a combined 70 per cent of the soda market there. neither the embassy nor sources close to Mas commented on the meeting’s conclusions, which were not made public. the Catalan government hopes the tax will raise about €30 million a year. the Spanish soft drinks association anFaBRa is also lobbying against the tax.

World News US sends Venezuelan diplomats back home

The United States has expelled two Venezuelan diplomats, following the expulsion of US attaches from Caracas. US officials said on Monday that the second secretary in Venezuela's Washington embassy, Orlando Jose Montanez, and New York consular official Victor Camacaro were declared personae non gratae on Saturday and left the US on Sunday. The US officials were sent back hours before President Hugo Chavez's death was announced last Tuesday. At the time, Vice President Nicolas Maduro accused them of "attempting

to destabilise the country". The two countries have not had ambassadors in each other's capitals since 2010.

The latest expulsions came as Vice President Nicolas Maduro and challenger Henrique Capriles registered as candidates to succeed Mr Chavez. On Monday, Maduro, who is now acting president, officially registered his candidature for the presidential elections on April 14th . He told crowds

of supporters outside the National Election Council during a two-hour speech: "I am not Chavez, but I am his son and all of us together, the people, are Chavez." He will face the opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who has agreed to run for the umbrella opposition group Table for Democratic Unity (MUD). Maduro's supporters tried to prevent Capriles reaching the council, forcing officials to extend a 14:00 (18:30 GMT) deadline for

registration. Foreign correspondents have said the stage is now set for a bitter presidential campaign. The opposition boycotted Maduro's swearing-in on Friday, claiming that under the constitution the speaker of the National Assembly, Diosdado Cabello, should be the one to take over as acting president. Chavez – who led Venezuela for 14 years – won last October's election against Capriles, polling 54% of the vote to Mr Capriles's 44%.

UN disputes Medical checks Gaza strike for Berlusconi The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has said that the son of a BBC journalist and two relatives killed in last November's war in Gaza may have been hit by a misfired Palestinian rocket. It said its conclusions were based on a visit to the site a month after the attack. They said they did not carry out a forensic investigation, but said their team did not think the damage was consistent with an Israeli air strike. However, the UN said it could not "unequivocally conclude" it was a misfired

Palestinian rocket. A UN official said it was also possible the house was hit by a secondary explosion after an Israeli air strike on Palestinian weapons stores. At the time, human rights groups blamed the deaths on an Israeli air strike. The UN report concluded that at least 169 Palestinians were killed by Israeli attacks during the offensive. It said more than 100 were civilians, including 33 children and 13 women. The report said six Israelis were killed by Palestinians attacks, including four civilians.

A court in Italy has ordered medical checks to be carried out on Silvio Berlusconi to verify that he cannot attend a trial due to health problems. The 76-year-old former prime minister, who is on trial in Milan on charges of paying for sex with an underage prostitute and abuse of power, has been in hospital since Friday because of an eye inflammation.

Meanwhile, prosecutors in Naples are requesting an accelerated trial for Mr Berlusconi on corruption charges. Italian law allows

for the scrapping of preliminary hearings, which can last more than a year, when evidence of the alleged crime is considered overwhelming.

The judge has 10 days to decide whether to permit an "immediate trial". Mr Berlusconi is accused of paying a leftwing senator €3 million to defect to his right-wing People of Freedom party (PDL) in 2006, weakening the government of Romano Prodi, which collapsed in 2008, and triggered the elections that returned Mr Berlusconi to power.

Judge blocks NYC large-soda ban

A court has blocked a ban on the sale of large sugary drinks – including soda – from restaurants in New York City on Monday, a day before the law was to take effect.

Judge Milton Tingling ruled that the measure was "arbitrary and capricious", after industry groups sued the city. The law would forbid the sale of drinks larger than 16 ounces in foodservice establishments. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the judge was "totally in error" and has vowed to appeal against Monday's ruling. He has touted the ban as a way to reduce obesity. Research suggests that 58% of adults in New York are obese or overweight. UNiTed STATeS

North Korea sanctions extended

The US has imposed sanctions on North Korea's primary foreign exchange bank, the Foreign Trade Bank (FTB), and four individuals, amid heightened tensions over its nuclear ambitions. The move followed a UN vote last week to expand sanctions on Pyongyang after its February nuclear test. On Monday, North Korea cut the hotline between the two Koreas and said the Korean War armistice was "invalid".

A spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the terms of the Korean War armistice "do not allow either side unilaterally to free themselves from it''. The two Koreas remain technically at war because the armistice, not a peace treaty, ended the 1950-53 conflict. Although the hotline has been cut, other channels of communication exist between them.

UK News There has been controversy over the British government’s determination to avoid cutting foreign aid at a time of recession and the move is seen as a measure to help British companies and prevent a part of the £11-billion budget from being squandered. Prime Minister David Cameron is known to be keen on the shift in policy, which will see British firms involved in the construction of roads, railways, schools and hospitals. Miss Greening said the

Department for International Development will work with the Business Department, Foreign Office and Confederation of British Industry “to help UK businesses make a difference for developing countries”. Part of the foreign aid budget has already been earmarked to support Ministry of Defence peacekeeping programmes on the premise that countries need to be free of conflict to progress and make good use of the aid offered.

Research by an independent statistician has provided vital evidence that could help the police and Department of Transport make Britain’s roads safer for pedestrians. While there has been an overall reduction in road deaths, the number of pedestrians being killed and injured on Britain’s roads has risen and Ian Campbell’s research has shown that if you live in

Liverpool you are more likely to be knocked down by a car than you would be elsewhere. In fact, Merseyside is an astonishing three times more deadly than Suffolk for pedestrians with 14 deaths per 100,000 people. The reasons for the variations are not clear, but the figures provide the authorities with valuable information they can use to better understand the casualty rates.

Jeremy Irons wants plastic bags banned Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons is leading a campaign to ban plastic bags across Europe and it could happen by 2014. While some supermarkets in England

and Scotland have tried to discourage the use of the throw-away bags, others have not, and the initiative has failed.

But use of the bags, which cause a litter

problem harmful to wildlife and the environment, has dropped by 96 per cent in Wales and Ireland, where shoppers are now charged

for them. There are proposals to do the same in Scotland.

Organisations that support a ban on throw-

away plastic bags include the Marine Conservation Society, the National Trust and Daily Mail newspaper.

British tourists head for Greece One of the wettest summers on record last year has resulted in an increase in the number of holidaymakers deciding to take a break abroad rather than in Britain this year.

And it is good news for the Greek economy as bookings to the country

from Britain are up a healthy 10 per cent.

Tourism brings in 15 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product and the increase in tourist numbers will bring a welcome boost to Greek coffers.

British companies to benefit from foreign aid contracts

The British government is to announce new measures to ensure that billions of pounds in foreign aid is channelled through British companies rather than put into the hands of regimes that may not spend it wisely. The International Development Secretary Justine Greening is expected to announce this week that British firms will be able to win contracts to provide essential infrastructure in struggling countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Shops call for help with business rates

Retailers in Britain are feeling the pinch with more than one in seven shops in the high street empty and those remaining calling for a freeze on rising business rates. Sales have failed to keep pace with costs in recent years, hitting profitability hard and a number of leading stores have closed, including Comet, HMV and Jessops. The trade body, the British Retail Consortium, says inflation linked business rates should be axed and the charge linked to a more realistic “growth test”. UKTV

Prince in TV special

The Prince of Wales has guestedited a special edition of the BBC television programme Countryfile as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations this year. The weekly rural affairs programme is filmed at the Prince’s organic farm in Gloucestershire. The BBC moved the programme to a prime-time slot on Sunday nights and it has become extremely successful, attracting over seven-million viewers. PREMIER LEAGUE

Rangers boost chance

Queens Park Rangers gave their hopes of survival in English soccer’s Barclays Premier League a further boost by beating fellow strugglers Sunderland 3-1. This makes it back to back wins for manager Harry Redknapp and, although the team remain bottom of the table, there is only one point between the bottom three clubs. The other notable result was Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Tottenham at Anfield which keeps alive Merseyside hopes for a top four place. In the FA Cup Manchester City moved into the semi-finals with a 5-0 win over Barnsley, but Manchester United could not hold on to a first half 2-0 lead against Chelsea, who levelled the game with a second half comeback and take the tie back to London.

Snow chaos on UK roads

The South of England, and in particular along the M23 and A23 roads in the Hampshire region came to a standstill on Monday evening as more snow and ice formed on major roads. Motorists were complaining bitterly as they said there was no evidence of any salt or grit being used and some of them had been stuck in their cars for 14 hours including ex-Bucks Fizz singer Cheryl Baker who went out with her husband to rescue her 18year-old twin daughters after they had a prang in their car in the Brighton area. And according to the Met Office, temperatures were expected to stay below freezing in many areas for the next few days, with the minimum as low as –7C. Up to 10cm (4in) of snow was forecast to settle in the worstaffected areas, including Kent, Sussex and southern Hampshire, and over higher ground in areas like the Pennines.. Rail services also faced disruption. Southern warned of short-notice cancellations and delays of up to an hour on all

services. There were delays to Southeastern services between Paddock Wood and Strood in Kent because of a signalling problem, while some Gatwick Express services were cancelled. On First Capital Connect, journeys between Bedford and Brighton were also subject to short-notice cancellations, with delays of up to 45 minutes. Ice and snow made roads across much of the South East impassable, with Dover and Folkestone among the worst affected. The Channel Tunnel reopened after technical issues, with delays back to Junction 10 (Ashford) on the M20. Eurostar suspended its services for the day because of bad weather in France and Belgium. Jersey Airport was closed for the day, while travellers heading for Gatwick were warned to allow extra time to reach the West Sussex airport due to snow on the roads in the area. At the Port of Dover in Kent, cross-Channel ferry operations were operating "as far as possible".

Lower voting age proposed Proposed legislation to let 16 and 17-year-olds vote in the Scottish independence referendum has been formally brought to parliament. SNP ministers said it would ensure everyone aged 16 and over on the day of the autumn 2014 vote could take part. Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said young people had the biggest stake in the future of the country. The move came ahead of a separate bill on the arrangements to hold the referendum itself. Lowering the voting age for all elections is a longstanding SNP policy, and the party says it has been backed by organisations including Scotland's biggest teaching union, the EIS, as well as the Scottish TUC, National Union of Students and the Electoral Reform Society. The UK government previously opposed votes for 16 and 17-year-olds in the independence referendum, although the measure was eventually included in the Edinburgh Agreement, which set out

the terms for the vote and was signed by both Westminster and Scottish ministers. Speaking on a visit to Edinburgh High School, Ms Sturgeon said: "No-one has a bigger stake in the future of our country than today's young people and it is only right that they are able to have a say in the most important vote to be held in Scotland for three centuries.” The franchise bill, which needs to be passed by MSPs before becoming law, will base voter eligibility on Scottish parliamentary and council elections. That means groups of people entitled to vote include people living in Scotland who are British, Irish or from other EU countries, "qualifying Commonwealth citizens" and members of the armed services serving overseas who are registered to vote in Scotland. The Scottish government has already lowered the voting age to 16 in one area, when it piloted health board elections in Dumfries and Galloway and Fife.

Convict re-arrested Police have arrested a convicted murderer who fled prison while on day release.

Brian Lynch, 44, was held just before 5am at an address in Gorton, Manchester. A woman, 40, who was also at the address was arrested on suspicion of harbouring an escaped prisoner. Lynch fled from Preston city centre last Thursday afternoon while on a day trip from nearby HMP Kirkham. He was jailed in 1988 for the killing of 21-

year-old Chi Yeung Yip in Clayton, Manchester.

A spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said: "Absconded prisoner Brian Lynch was arrested in the early hours of this morning at an address in the Gorton area of Manchester. A 40-year-old woman has been arrested for harbouring an escaped prisoner and both are currently in police custody in Manchester. Lynch will be charged with absconding and will be sent back to prison."

Residents watch rising rivers anxiously The areas bordering the Guadalquivir and Guadalete rivers are all on orange alert as the rains continue and the waters keep rising.

Water levels in most of the region's reservoirs are also fast approaching the point where they will overflow, increasing the danger of widespread floods. People living along the Guadalete river in Jerez are already being

evacuated. Mayor Maria Jose Garcia Pelayo told reporters on Monday that "something is wrong when the Guadalete floods its banks every three years".

Surrounding fields are already under water and there is no sign of a let up in the rains until the weekend at the earliest. Cadiz has been one of the worst hit provinces where rain has cut off 14 main

and rural roads. But roads in Jaen, Cordoba and Granada have also been affected. The weathermen predict that this March will turn out to be one of the wettest on record.

However, there is one ray of good news – they say there will be only one wet day this Easter week, which means most of the processions will hopefully be able to take place.

Easter thrones exhibition The real estate idealista.com website is presenting an exhibition of the Malaga Brotherhoods and their Easter procession thrones to celebrate its 10th anniversary in Malaga. Called Las Casas de la Semana Santa (The Houses of Holy Week), it consists of 43 panels offering information about the Brotherhoods, their headquarters and their floats.

The exhibition which

was organised together with Canal Sur Radio and the Association of Brotherhoods, has been in preparation for a year and a half, with the photos being taken last Easter. The agency has mounted similar exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona in the past. A spokesman said the company wanted to give back to Malaga part of the many good things the city had offered it. When the exhibition ends, each panel will be given to its

corresponding Brotherhood.

The exhibition is being held at the headquarters of the Agrupacion de Cofradias until March 22nd, from 11 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 9 pm.

Charge for luggage carts At some time later this year, the Airports Authority (Aena) will start charging €1 for the use of the baggage carts at Malaga airport, and those of Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona El Prat, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, Tenerife Sur and Alicante. An Aena spokesman said no date had been decided on yet

but that Madrid will be the first airport to start charging.

He said the income from the carts, calculated at €3.2 million for the busiest airports, would go towards upkeep and maintenance. He pointed out that the charge would be lower than those in other countries like the

UK, where it ranges from £1 to £2 or the US (between $1.5 and $4).

Sperm whale death link to UK A dead sperm whale that washed up on the Granada coast last week had swallowed 17 kilos of plastic waste dumped into the sea by workers at greenhouses in Almeria that produce tomatoes and other vegetables for British supermarkets.

Researchers from the Doñana national park research centre in Cadiz said the 4.5 tonne whale had swallowed 59 different bits of plastic – most of it thick transparent sheeting used to build greenhouses. They also found a clothes hanger, an ice-cream tub and bits of mattress. They said the plastic had eventually blocked the animal's stomach and killed it. The Almeria greenhouses that cover about 40,000 hectares produce more than 45,000 tonnes of plastic waste a year. Most of it is treated in special waste centres,

but environmentalists complain that because the greenhouses are built right up to the high-tide line, some of the plastic also ends up in the sea. Easter IN BRIEF editorial@thenewsonline.es garbage Malaga strike threat Moroccan drug gang smashed Malaga Mayor Francisco de la Torre (PP) threatened on Monday to fire a quarter of the city's 1,200 or so street cleaners who are threatening to go on strike during Easter week. Similar strikes have already plagued Jerez, Sevilla and Granada and a strike in Malaga at Easter could seriously affect the number of people coming to see the city's famous processions.

Basically, the city is trying to reschedule shifts and holidays to reduce the number of temporary workers contracted, which would result in an annual savings of €6 million. The city owns 49 per cent of the Limasa company that employs the workers and the local Socialist Party wants the City Council to buy the remaining 51 per cent. Socialist spokeswoman Maria Gamez said a street cleaners' strike during Easter week would be "tragic" and urged the city council to take over the service.

The national Police have dismantled a Moroccan gang that sold hashish along the coast from Malaga to almeria. during the socalled Sandokan operation, the police detained six people and seized 31 kilos of hashish. The operation started last november when an anonymous caller reported gunfire in a basement of a building in benalmadena. Two men were arrested and released on charges. The police kept them under surveillance which eventually led to the four other members of the gang – three in Malaga and one in almeria. Marbella

Nurses recruited for Norway

The norwegian Health Service has launched a campaign with the objective of recruiting 220 nurses and are currently carrying out interviews in the town. a spokesman for the company carrying out the interviews, the Scandinavian Health Programs (SHP), said the health education programme in Spain is one of the best in the world and Spanish nurses are highly regarded abroad. However, there is a language barrier. To surmount this, the spokesman said the nurses were being offered four-monthlong crash courses in norwegian which would give them the basic knowledge required to start work in norway. granada

Bus service to the Alhambra

In an effort to attract even more visitors to the city's most famous building, the City Council plans to introduce an "ecology-friendly" bus service. Most traffic is barred on the approaches to the alhambra in an attempt to reduce pollution. Past solutions to accessing the monument have included a lift, which was discarded as impractical and never got past the proposal stage. a train service between the city centre and the alhambra was introduced in 1995 but only lasted a year. now the City Council hopes the ecology-friendly bus will solve the problem.

A continuing nightmare

A newspaper’s secret formula

B

W

A

s promised, here is the photo taken after Hugo Chavez presented me with the Order of Merit at Work (2nd Class) on June 3rd, 1999, at the Teresa Carreño Theatre in Caracas. I was grinning my head off, because I was in the ridiculous situation of accepting an award from a man I was growing to hate.

elieve it or not, I nearly allowed myself to be seduced by the lean lieutenant colonel who tried to overthrow the government of Carlos Andres Perez on February 4th, 1992. Chavez was in charge of taking Caracas. His fellow conspirators took the oil capital of Maracaibo at the western end of the country and the industrial capital of Valencia some two hours away from the capital without much trouble. They accomplished it with a handful of soldiers – few citizens came out in their favour and absolutely none rushed into the street to defend Perez's corrupt government.

F

or whatever reason, Chavez failed to take Caracas. In fact, he was holed up in the Military Museum in a large park near the presidential palace all the time his men were trying to take the capital and stayed there until Perez gave him half an hour to surrender or be bombed off the face of the earth.

P

erez then made the mistake of allowing Chavez to surrender on television. He said the coup had failed "por ahora" (for now) and I think it was those defiant two words that captured the imagination of millions of people – including myself. Finally, someone was willing to try to do away with the corruption that had been the curse of the country ever since Simon Bolivar kicked out the Spaniards in 1821. Chavez and his fellow conspirators spent the next two years in jail until then President Rafael Caldera made the second big mistake – he pardoned them, leaving Chavez free to run for president. If he'd been formally condemned he would not have been eligible to run for any elected position.

A

s soon as he left jail he started campaigning for the 1998 election and spent the next three years courting the poorest Venezuelans. But it must be said that his oft-repeated promise to end corruption won him a large following among the middle class. The more I listened to him, the more disenchanted I became. He was just the same old demagogue taking advantage of the romantic aura of the February 4th coup attempt.

I

knew through my left-wing friends that he considered himself a revolutionary. His brother Adan

had belonged to Douglas Bravo's happy band of guerrilla fighters and now set himself up as Hugo's ideological mentor. Then came rumours that he was talking to the Colombian guerrillas – although by then they dedicated most of their time to protecting the drug cartel's cocaine refinery plants hidden deep in the Colombian jungle.

B

y the time the 1998 election campaign began officially I had decided that Chavez was a very dangerous man intent on leading Venezuela down a revolutionary path that could end in bloodshed all over Latin America. I warned all my Venezuelan friends not to vote for him, but many of them did, only to tell me months later – after he'd started to rewrite to Constitution to suit his plans – that they wished they'd heeded my advice. As it turned out, he preferred to buy people – he paid the hordes who kept up a permanent pro-Chavez "show" in the centre of Caracas a minimum wage so of course they loved him. Most of them had never held down a paying job in their lives.

H

e spent millions on helping Evo Morales to win in Bolivia, Rafael Correa in Ecuador, Cristina Kirchner in Argentina and Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua. His plan was to spread his "21st century Socialism" to the farthest corners of the continent – spurred on by Fidel Castro.

F

ortunately God – or Destiny – had other plans for him. I doubt that Chavismo without Chavez will last very long, even if the chavistas – using all the dirty tricks in the book – win the next election on April 14th. They don't have his charisma or passion and thanks to Chavez's generosity to his "friends", the country is on the verge of bankruptcy, despite the oil. In fact, if they have any sense, they should let poor Henrique Capriles tackle all the problems that are about to shower down on their heads.

Writes for the English language version of

L

ast year, after rumours surfaced that it was abandoning print, The Guardian announced that it was not giving up on paper. “Numbers for going digital only and junking print just don't add up," wrote editor Allan Rushbridger on his Twitter account in October. hile I was still studying at the university in the early 1980s, there were long discussions over the future of newspapers. Were they destined to die off to make way for a more immediate and entertaining form of obtaining the news – the nightly television newscast?

P

eople just didn’t have time anymore to sit down and read a long newspaper account; they wanted to know what was going on in the world in three minutes and with colourful visuals to entice them. But little did anyone in the industry realise that this debate would take a new course in the near future as both print and electronic media began to feel the heat from a new kid on the block, a vital tool which has become an essential part of our lives. But here again the internet – this third generation source of news, information and entertainment – has still not demonstrated its capability to replace print. People, especially in Spain, widely prefer to leaf through a paper, as they sit in a cafe or bus, or just take it home to relax on a Sunday afternoon. And there is a simple reason for this.

T

rue, the internet has forced dailies, such as El País and The New York Times, to look at new ways to make their operations more profitable and shore up lagging readership. Just last month, The New York Times announced a major restructuring at the Paris-based International Herald Tribune, which throughout the 20th century has been an American expat institution in Europe. Later this year, the IHT brand will disappear and will become The New York Times Global Edition, following a lead by the Wall Street Journal which since 1983 has published a European edition aimed at continental-wide readers.

T

oday, El País will begin to follow similar suit when readers on both sides of the Atlantic will be able to choose on the web between the current Spanish version or the new Americas edition which will focus more on regional news across the hemisphere. This edition will provide extensive coverage of Latin America and along with it will include links to English-

language versions of the dispatches of the most important stories coming out of region. In effect, El País will now have a broader coverage of Latin American news on a daily basis and in English!

M

any major European dailies in recent years have begun making available their content in English on their websites, appealing to a wider audience. These include Der Spiegel, La Stampa and Le Figaro, which all have English content on a regular basis. According to our statistics, the majority of people who click daily to read the El País English edition’s website come from Spain, followed by the United States, Britain and Canada in that ranking order. And the list of English-language newspapers – The News included – that reach across the far corners of Europe, keeping expats informed, continues to grow despite the drops in advertising sales.

S

o what does this all mean? The argument that newspapers are waiting for the green-mile walk is far from ever taking place. Yes, there are more offerings available across the web and in English but no newspaper big or small has been able to find the correct formula to make a profit by providing content on the internet. So far, every experiment has been in hit-and-miss circumstances. It took El País nearly 10 years to become a leader for Spanish news on the web after it debuted with paid subscription-only access while competitor El Mundo took off in a flash with its free content.

T

he New York Times has a 10free-articles per month policy, with readers having to pay for additional content, but if people want serious news but are not willing to shell out a fee, they can always call up its competitor, The Washington Post, where similar high quality articles are free on an unlimited basis.

B

ut community news is the dominant factor to keeping newspapers alive. Just where will you be able to get information about the upcoming meeting of your favourite charity organisation or clip out your niece’s bridal announcement for a keepsake in the family bible? That is the secret formula that will keep print circulating for many years to come.

‘Dirty Dusters’ on line for laughs An appreciative first-night audience roared with laughter at the antics of three elderly cleaning ladies who are the heroines of ‘Dirty Dusting’, a saucy comedy by northern playwrights Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood. This production, by the International Theatre Studio, hit all the right buttons and scored with every innuendo-packed one-liner, of which there were many. It begins when ‘Olive’ (played by Kate Jackson), ‘Gladys’ (Carmel Rogers) and ‘Elsie’ (Carol Woolnoth) are faced with redundancy. An errant call to the office they are supposed to be cleaning turns out to be a wrong number from a seeker of gratification at the end of a phone line. This starts them thinking and the result is ‘Telephone Belles’ – a sex chat-line that leaves everything to the imagination. Shocked by the lurid fantasies of some of their clients, they nevertheless give as good as they get. When one caller admits to a relationship with a vacuum cleaner, they think they’ve heard

everything until it emerges that he is none other than their loathed overseer, ‘Dave’ (Paul Baker). They waste no time in capitalising on their good fortune and go for the jugular. The catastrophic consequences of Dave’s entanglement with the malfunctioning appliance provide the hilarious climax.

For details of forthcoming ITS productions visit www.internationaltheatre studio.org.

Kloe

This is Kloe with one of our younger volunteers. As you can see she is very gentle and loving with children. Kloe is a Husky cross about 12 months old and weighs around 13 kilos. She was found abandoned with her sibling in the campo in a very poor condition, starving, and scared. Luckily they were rescued and taken to FAMA, and nursed back to health. She is a good girl with a lovely nature, she loves to play and go for walks. She has no issues with other dogs, and is very well behaved in

public. She would love a home and family of her own, even though she is very well cared for and loved at FAMA. If you would like to meet her in person, and get more information, please contact Pat on 620 354 885 or visit www.famaspain.com Unfortunately Kloe is only one of many abandoned dogs that can be seen at our kennels anytime. FAMA’S policy is never to have a healthy dog put down. They have a home at the refuge for life or until they are adopted.

Pianist Sylvia will play her last TIMS concert on April 21st. Consequently TIMS is on the lookout for someone to follow in her footsteps. This is a voluntary position and admittedly Sylvia is quite a hard act to follow but it is also a great opportunity for any similarly talented person to step forward and seize the

moment. Anyone interested should be a good reader of music and be able to assist with both concerts and rehearsals. To find out more about this exciting opportunity with a well established highly talented amateur choir here on the Costa del Sol please contact Gilly Bareford on 952 573 983 / 654 891 790 or email gilly.bareford@hotmail.co.u k. by Pete Woodall.

Help! What do I do if someone dies? Due to the success of previous “What to do when someone dies in Spain” seminars there is to be another one for those of you who were unable to attend the previous events. This will be at the Carolina Restaurant which is located at the top end of Alhaurin el Grande, on the road towards Alhaurin de la Torre, on Friday 22nd March at 11am. Jon Sutton of DeCotta law will be talking about the importance of making a will, the changes in succession law and keeping you updated on any other changes within the law. Barry Dare from Avalon will be talking about the process to be followed

when someone dies in Spain and will be presenting pre-paid funeral plans. Andrea Speed and Kath Dillon from Speed Financial Solutions will be talking about how to reduce your Spanish Inheritance Tax Liability, Spanish Fiscal Residency and the new disclosure laws and how this will affect the expats. There will be a member of the clergy, represented by Caroline Mcfarlane, present to talk through procedures and put your minds at rest. Another event is being planned for Friday 19th April in or around the Estepona area. The venue is to be confirmed at a later date.

Jackets and jobs

The recent campaign in the Age Concern shop’s selling ladies trousers for 1€ was a great success. That campaign is now over but a new one has started selling men’s jackets for only 2€. They are not sure how long it will run for but to snap up a quality jacket at such a low price the advice is – shop now! Age Concern runs a very successful charity shop in Calle Zaragoza, Estepona. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10.00 to 13.30 and is run, and managed by volunteers. Age Concern is now appealing for more

people to come forward and volunteer to work in the shop as several vacancies have come about due to sickness. The work is fun and rewarding and all they ask of the volunteers is that they give up a few hours of their spare time to help the charity raise funds to assist the volunteers who work in the community with older people. If you are interested give Eileen Dry a call on 608 458 555, or pop into the shop and have a chat with the duty manager. No experience is necessary as training will be given.

The British Embassy in Madrid have issued a press release, warning of the severity of new regulations concerning the declaration of worldwide assets to the Spanish tax authorities.

The British embassy explains the situation as follows: “Britain has a double taxation agreement with Spain to ensure people do not pay tax on the same income in both countries.

In accordance with Spanish and international law, all residents in Spain (nationals and nonnationals alike) are required to declare assets or groups of assets held outside Spain. Assets may include bank accounts, securities, rights, insurance, annuities, property, etc and the declaration is a separate exercise to the annual tax return. To reinforce this obligation, and as part of the Spanish Government’s recent anti-fraud law, the Government on 15 November 2012 passed a Royal Decree that requires all residents in Spain to file an annual informative declaration of assets held overseas by 31 March each year. Exceptionally for 2012 declarations, the deadline is 30 April 2013. Severe penalties for incorrect, incomplete or late reporting can be incurred and the legislation also means that criminal charges can be brought in the case of noncompliance. The requirement and potential penalties are in line with standard international tax practice. Taxation is a complex issue and it is strongly recommended that professional advice is sought. The English language page of the Spanish Tax Authority website can be found online specifically at www.agenciatributaria.go b.es/AEAT.sede/en_gb/Inic io/Inicio.shtml The updated guidance is intended to remind British residents in

Spain of their existing tax obligations.

The British Embassy and British Consulates are unable to assist with any personal enquiries or provide any further detailed information about taxation in Spain.” collated by Pete Woodall

Your Weekly Entertainment Guide OUT & ABOUT Play cricket in Spain The Pógs St Patrick's Day Party WEDNESDAY, March 13th 2013

Cricket is first recorded as being played in Spain in the year 1809 by soldiers of General Lord Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington). It was during the Peninsular war that the soldiers played the game in and around Ciudad Rodrigo, Lugo and Orense. From that date there are many recordings of the game being played by visiting British land and sea forces, either between themselves or

The globally green event of the year, St Patrick's Day is next Sunday. Although there are many fine Irish venues on the coast, the celebration destination of choice – for those in the know – has to be Pógs in Fuengirola. Irish from day one when it opened some six years ago, this big Irish live music pub will be the fun place to be for all ages. Celebrations start around noon and go on late. To date three great bands are booked for your entertainment. The Stolen Gnomes, at 3.00 pm, are a five piece Celtic fusion band performing a mix of fast Irish jigs and reels, Irish songs from The Pogues, The Waterboys and Steve Earl, fused with exciting melodies from around the world including a little dash of Chicago soul for good measure. From around 6.00 pm the ever popular Steve Nelson Band (pictured) follow with classic Irish rock ballads from The Commitments, Thin Lizzy,

Christy Moore and similar. The party carries on with The Dirty Little Secrets Band, renowned performers of the music of Jeff Beck, Rolling Stones, Beatles and Santana to mention just a few. All three are tried, tested, popular party bands. Throw in a big bar, fancy dress if you like, plenty of Guinness, a wooden dance floor and a few shots, it's just guaranteed to get the joint jumpin'. There's a prize draw for two free air tickets to Dublin with entry to the famous Guinness Storehouse Museum. The

What is it about Sherlock?

MOVIES A ND DVDS TO WATCH O UT FO R IN 2 0 1 3

By Amy Thomas

Any comments?

email: editorial@thenewsonline.es

L

ast night I watched the last episode of the BBC series “Sherlock”, again, and well, it got me thinking about Sherlock Holmes. What is it about this literary character that has made him so famous for so long? What is the fascination of Sherlock? Could it be the hat? The pipe? The fact that he is Billy no mates?

MOVieS  tO  WAtc H OUt  fOR

Si d e ef f ec t S

Directed by Stephen Soderburgh Starring: Jude Law, Vinessa Shaw, Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta Jones

This is Oscar-winning director Soderburgh’s final big screen outing (apart from an upcoming biopic of Liberace starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon which will air on HBO in the US) and he has been winning plaudits all round from the critics for his classy, tense, noir-ish thriller. Emily Taylor (a compelling performance by Mara) is a suicidal depressive, reunited with her Wall St dealer husband Martin (Channing Tatum) following his four years in jail for trading offences.

She has been a patient of a leading woman psychiatrist (Zeta Jones) but ends up in hospital where she comes into contact with Jonathan Banks (Law).

Banks’s wife is expensive to run so although he is basically a good man who cares for his patients he is not averse to taking money from big pharmaceutical companies promoting their new drugs. So we head into the moral morass of America’s chemical culture. It sounds simple enough.

But this is Soderburgh and his skilfully plotted account of Emily’s life unravelling as a consequence of taking the new, untested drug and the impact it has on all who are in contact with her is powerfully told with twisty thrilling turns.

If you enjoyed Fatal Attraction and Jagged Edge this will be right up your street. Soderburgh’s movie pays homage to Hitchcock as he ratchets up the tension and there is a plot twist to leave audiences gasping. There

are great performances from all the cast. Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) captures the tragedy of suicidal depression and Law and Zeta Jones are on top form.

Soderburgh leaves Hollywood at just 50 (he has decided to direct in the theatre and paint) with an interesting CV of movies that have made their mark on Tinseltown and this is a very well-worked addition to his movie catalogue.

DVD NEW RELEASE

The Hobbit

Release date: March 5th 2013

Directed by Peter Jackson Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Cate Blanchett

Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take

them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that

will change his life forever ... Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities ...

A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

L

ooking into all the TV and film versions, Sherlock varies in age, appearance, attitude, etc, but the funny thing is no matter how many versions they make, or how young they try and make him, the basic image of Sherlock Holmes is of an old guy in a deer stalker with a pipe.

I

researched into Doyle to see how he originally wrote Sherlock, and he described him as a “thin wiry, dark” man, “with a high-nosed acute face, penetrating grey eyes, angular shoulders”. Doyle based him on Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Doyle said that Bell would sit in this receiving room with a face like a Red Indian, and diagnose the people as they came in, before they even opened their mouths. He would tell them details of their past life and would hardly ever make a mistake.

S

o, who is the more accurate Sherlock? Basil Rathbone is the most commonly identified Sherlock, but Jeremy Brett from the 1980s series, seems to be more loved. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, I think are a little old and a little scary

as Sherlock, however taking in to consideration that in some of the books Sherlock was 60. Actually, he started at 23 and continued up in to his 60s, and Dr. Watson was with him for 17 years.

M

ore recently there have been the younger Sherlocks. In 2009 Guy Ritchie appointed Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock. I want to say it was really good, but to be honest I can’t remember, so, hmm let’s just say, not the best Sherlock. The BBC made “Sherlock” (the one I was watching last night), with Benedict Cumberbatch. I call him “catman”, mainly because of his cheekbones and catlike features, a very arrogant Sherlock, but I have to say I kind of like it, it works. Very quirky and quick dialogue, I think Martin Freeman is a bit of a letdown, but you can’t have it all.

A

nd last but not least, “Elementary”, another modern version of Sherlock, but this one has more than one difference. Sherlock, played by Jonny Lee Miller is in rehab in New York City, and Watson is a woman. OK, this one I haven’t seen, so I’m going to be gentle. Jonny Lee Miller was cute, but now his losing his hair, really. On the other hand, they have managed to bring up Sherlock’s drug habit. Yes, Sherlock is addicted to cocaine, isn’t that shocking?

A

nyway, my reason for bringing all of this up, is because I could not see how in the final episode of “Sherlock” Cumberbatch could survive. Well, apparently we’ve all missed something, because two new episodes of “Sherlock” will begin shooting next week, so, he’s evidentally not dead!

A warm night in Barcelona ... just off La Rambla in Plaça Bonsuccés, 6, near La Boqueria market, there is a wonderful cafe ‘Buenas Migas’ which is a small chain of cafe’s selling nothing but focaccia sandwiches of all flavours, and fillings. Ah! memories ...

Think your words and actions through very carefully and try not to allow yourself to act on impulse. The best thing you can do is to use your imagination to give that inner genius a platform. The road may feel uncertain this week which can create an inner anxious feeling; you have a lot on your mind and at times too much. Make sure you get adequate rest and relaxation and trust that unexpected occurrences are there to enhance your journey not hinder it.

past as well as the unwanted can leave you feeling like the bottom is going to drop out of a certain area of your life. Your emotions will be unpredictable at best and the feeling of not being able to direct the tides is making it difficult to plan and prepare. New beginnings can be scary at times, but once you start to see the potentials, it's a totally different optimistic story. When your world is more predictable you excel, however, at the moment you are not in your comfort zone. Words and promises mean little to you now as you are interested in solid actions and results – and so it should be as this is the way of ensuring results actually happen. Rise up and see any confrontation as a challenge that allows you to become the leader you are meant to be. Your words and opinions are just as valid and valuable as anybody else’s. When you have two people who are clearly wired differently, the chances the two will align and agree is next to nil. You are a radical thinker that prides yourself on being one who has an instinctual disdain for conformity. Considering your thoughts and plans and the way you see things may never gel with a certain other, the only way this week may be to get to the place where you simply agree to disagree. This can create a true feeling of closure, and stop the bleeding from a certain ongoing battle. It is time for closure so you can be free of the fog and the film, nothing may matter more to you this week than to nip a certain thing in the bud so you can simply and finally be done. Whatever is going on now, will very likely sort itself out by then if not beforehand. It is up to you to maintain your own sense of priority and direction, there is nothing right now that is impossible for you, the financial indicators alone are amazing, take a chance.

Ingredients:

( Serves 4)

For the filling: • 4-5 red and yellow peppers, halved and deseeded • extra virgin olive oil • three 125g pieces mozzarella, drained and sliced

Directions 1. Combine the flour, salt and yeast in a bowl. Add a splash of olive oil, then mix in enough water to form a dough. Knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and springy. Leave to rise in a warm place for 1 hour. 2. Mix the mushrooms, onion and basil into the dough, kneading until evenly distributed. Leave to rise for another hour. 3. Divide the dough into two. Stretch out each piece into an oval, about 30cm long, flattening them with your hands. 4. Place the dough on a baking sheet. Make holes all over the surface, using a skewer. Brush the dough liberally with more olive oil and leave to rise for another hour. 5. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas 6. 6. Bake the focaccia for 25 minutes until golden brown. 7. Remove from the oven, brush with more

olive oil and leave to cool. 8. To make the filling, place the peppers on a roasting tray, cut side down, and brush with oil. Roast at 200°C/gas 6 for 15-20 minutes until the skins start to brown and blister. Transfer to a bowl, cover with cling film and leave for 5 minutes. Peel off the skins and slice thickly. 9. Slice horizontally through the focaccia and open out flat. Place the mozzarella slices on top. Place under a preheated hot grill for 3-4 minutes until the cheese starts to melt. 10. Remove from the grill and top with peppers. 11. Drizzle the rocket lightly with oil and serve with the focaccia.

Another use for kitty litter In times when want to hang on to your money, expensive face masks are all too often one of life’s little luxuries that have to go. Most women at some point have spent a small fortune on mud masks in all manner of colours that are supposed to work miracles – and, yes, your skin does usually feel better after having had a facial mask on it for a few minutes. So you fancy having a face mask but can’t afford it? This is

how you do it on a budget. Unscented cat litter – at under €2 a big bag – is basically solidified volcanic mud. You need to add a couple of tablespoons of the litter to a bowl and add water until it becomes a creamy texture. (Cat litter can absorb up to ten times its dry weight in water.) As this stage you can add a little drop of your favourite oil if you wish. It doesn’t matter if there are a few lumps in it, just be careful when taking it off. Work the mixture

onto your skin but don’t go too close to your eyes as the skin in this area is too delicate and will dry out easily. There’s no need to make the mask too thick. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes until it has completely dried out (you should have felt a minty, refreshing feel on your skin as it dries), then wash off with warm water. Don’t forget to moisturise afterwards and, there you have it – a great facial on a budget!

Early diagnosis for Alzheimer's developed Researchers at the University of Nottingham have developed a test to detect Alzheimer's disease in its earliest stages, and is now developing a quick and easy test to do in clinics.

It works by looking for a combination of "markers" in the blood which are different in healthy people and those with the disease. The test uses some proteins that have been strongly linked with Alzheimer's disease, such

as amyloid and APOE. But through careful analysis of blood from people with the disease, as well as those with early-stage memory problems, the researchers detected some other markers that were suggestive of the disease. Most notably, some proteins related to inflammation seem to have been added to increase the power of the test.

The researchers said they still had to validate the test and it could be a decade before it was used in patients, but added: "Our findings are exciting because they show that it is technically possible to distinguish between healthy people and those with Alzheimer's using a blood test."

They said there were several ways the test could benefit patients, including giving people a definitive diagnosis, which was not always possible at the moment. It could also direct future therapies to make sure patients were getting the most appropriate treatment. Potentially, it could be a "cheap and easy prescreen" test which enabled Alzheimer's to be picked up before symptoms appeared. They said: "The way we see it working is you can test people and it

will tell them if they have the all-clear, or if they are medium- or high-risk.

"If they are mediumrisk, they can be monitored closely and high-risk patients can be

Waterloo and Mama Mia were among huge hits for the biggest Supergroup of all time

Now the blonde bombshell is back with more

… and a preview of what’s to come on her new album became available on Monday

A new album with a release date of May 13th this year is due from former Abba member Agnetha Faeltskog with the title simply “A”. The 62-year-old blonde one of the Supergroup is coming out of retirement to release her first album in almost a decade. However, the first single from the album, When You Really Love Someone, became available on Spotify, iTunes and YouTube on Monday. Previously described by the media as a recluse, she had said that she thought she would never sing again but said that once she had heard the first three songs, she couldn’t resist a return to the studio. She added: "I hadn't written music in a very long time, but when I sat down

at the piano it came to me very naturally."

The singer has collaborated on the album with Swedish songwriter and producer Joergen Elofsson and even has a co-written duet with Take That’s Gary Barlow.

Elofsson, who has penned hits for artists including Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson and Celine Dion, said: "She's a musician, a songwriter and singer who hasn't done that for a while. We saw her open up, become much happier with music again in her life," he said. Abba, who are one of the most popular and enduring bands of all time, formed in 1970 and shot to fame after winning the

Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo in 1974. The band, who have sold more than 378 million records to date, split up in 1982 and have never reunited. Former member Bjoern Ulvaeus has said the four "will never appear on stage (together) again", adding that he wanted fans to remember the band as "young, exuberant, full of energy and ambition".

It is not yet known whether Agnetha intends to tour but, after the resounding successes of Mama Mia on both stage and screen it would seem that there are plenty of fans, old and new that would fork out for a ticket or two if she decided that a tour was on the cards.

Music and veg More trouble for M&S combined? Following the collapse of 92-year-old music giant HMV in January this year with the possibility of the closure of around 100 shops plus all the jobs that would entail, it has been announced that Asda, one of Britain’s “Big 4” supermarkets, is considering a rescue bid.

Previously Hilco, the restructuring specialists, had bought HMV’s debt and it was thought that they would take over the company. However, Asda’s late bid seems to have put the cat amongst the pigeons and it may now not be such a foregone conclusion.

The supermarket giant has already held talks with administrators

Deloitte about buying the brand and the business with the apparent intention of keeping it running as an entertainments company.

Prior to January the company had 223 UK sites and employed 4,123 staff. However, Deloitte say they are intending to close more than 100 locations and plan to leave the retailer with a "residual portfolio" of 116 stores to take over. HMV got into trouble after seeing its sales eroded by competition from online music retailers, the digital download markets and supermarkets.

Marks & Spencer are again in crisis after poor Christmas figures led to chief executive Marc Bolland being given an ultimatum on Monday by a major share holder to turn the company round. David Cumming, head of equities at Standard Life Investments has said that it all hinges on the performance of the upcoming Autumn collection whereas other investors have said they want to see a marked improvement in sales before that or Mr Bolland will be facing calls for him to go. Sales of clothing and other ranges of general merchandise were down almost 4 percent, with the result that like for like sales dropped 1.8 percent. Mr Bolland shrugged off

Robert Morris Late last week I was driving in rather bad weather conditions in Alhaurin de la Torre. There is a point where, if you have been to the old town, there is a set of traffic lights near the Policia Local where you can rejoin the main road to go along to the Guzman’s garden centre. I had been patiently waiting for the lights to change and, when they did, checked all was OK and pulled away. Luckily I was not going very fast. The angle at which you join the main road here is at around 45º and uphill from where I was, so visibility isn’t great at the best of times. Just as I got on to the

I was amazed that the death of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez was not covered by the English Free newspapers here in Spain last week. Surely this was an event of some import and should have warranted front page space? I am rather hoping that there is an explanation for this lack of reporting from my favourite newspaper and it’s not a case of just

main road a cyclist came straight through a red light and hit the side of my car. The idiot was not cycling at a reasonable speed, nor did he take any notice of the red light that had been against him. He did not stop and, far from apologising, cycled off yelling at me! I have seen them do this on many occasions and, most of the time they get away with it. However, had there have been a real accident and had he been injured, I’m sure it wouldn’t have been him facing the strong arm of the law. Road laws are there for everyone’s protection and

the sooner these cycling buffoons learn that, the better off we’ll all be. I’m now facing a bill of almost €300 to get the paintwork on my car sorted out where he has scratched it with his bike. Editor says: I know exactly where you mean and this has happened to me too, almost exactly as you describe. As you say, the rules of the road apply to everyone and not just those behind the wheel of a car. Something like this could be enough to give someone a heart attack as you hear the thump of a bike that has come out of nowhere hitting your car. Idiot!

Editor says: Sr. Chavez’s death occurred after we had gone to press last week so we couldn’t have covered the story as it hadn’t happened and although he had been reported in the world press as being very poorly, we couldn’t say that he’d died before he had for

obvious reasons! However, it was reported on our website and you will find a photograph of our Muriel Pilkington being handed an award by Sr. Chavez in her column this week. I have to say that I was a bit surprised that other papers that come out on the two days following ours didn´t report it though.

I as pleased to see your coverage of the antics of pop star Justin Bieber last week. Since he pulled the stunt of turning up two hours late to his concert that was to be watched by hundreds of very young children at the O2 in London, he apparently said that he did it because he wanted “to look cool” like some of the other rock stars! I think someone needs to explain to this young man what the meaning of “cool” really is. Being arrogant and rather stupid is not cool. Appearing in public with a gas mask on your face is not cool. Getting agressive with a member of the paparazzi, even though we can all see how annoying they can be

when they thrust a microphone so far up your nose it’s painful, is not cool. What is cool is being a nice human being who respects the fact that the young kids and their parents have paid a lot of money to come and watch your concert. Turning up on time and giving a jolly good show so that they get their money’s worth is cool. Not going out on the town in a foreign country with a gas mask on but dressing appropriately is cool ... and Not abusing verbally the people that put your face in the media, no matter how obnoxious they are, is cool. If Justin Bieber wants to be cool as he says, he needs to calm down an awful lot and get on with his job! P.S. I am 14-years-old and know the meaning of cool!

The truth about Comets

I was hoping to be writing this week about the splendid sight of Comet PanSTARRS as it sweeps majestically across the night sky, but as far as I know the weather has been so bad that no one in the Northern Hemisphere has had a chance to spot it yet!

S

o to fill up a page I thought I’d give the heads up about Comets. 4.8 Billion years ago our solar system was just a mass of rocks, ice, dust and gas swirling around a new born Star – the Sun. It was a period of chaos as small rocks crashed into bigger rocks creating even bigger rocks that attracted even more rocks until over millions of years the four inner planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars began to form. The gases collected further away from the Sun’s gravity and went on to form the four gas giant planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. etween Mars and Jupiter was an area where a planet should have formed but it either didn’t quite make it or was ripped apart by Jupiter’s gravity and broke into millions of smaller rocks called asteroids. At the edge of the Solar System is an area known as the Kuiper belt, another area of mish-mash rocks of various sizes. The largest of the rocks in the Kuiper belt is called Pluto which is now no longer classed as a planet. urther out again, about a quarter of the way to the nearest star is a theoretical area called the Oort Cloud. It is thought that the Oort Cloud is like a bubble wrapped around the solar system containing all the unused remnants from the formation of the solar system. Inside the Oort Cloud are millions and millions of chunks of rock and ice slowly circling around the Sun and being held there by the most tenuous of gravitational attractions. This is where the comets live. omets vary in size from 100 metres to 40 kilometres across and have been described as dirty snowballs because of their make-up. It was once thought that comets were made purely of frozen water – ice – and that it was probably comets that brought so much water to the Earth in its early formation. But recent observations have revealed dry dusty or rocky surfaces, suggesting that the ices are hidden beneath the crust. very now and then a comet will be nudged slightly out of the Oort Cloud and the fragile balance is disturbed as the Sun’s gravity begins to attract it in toward the inner solar system. While comets are still deep in outer space they are very difficult to spot as the surface is made from very dark

B F

C E

material. But as they get closer to the Sun then the Sun’s rays begin to warm the surface and plumes of gases and micro particles of dust begin to stream out from the nucleus and the associated comet’s tail begins to form. It is only now that comets become visible. he Comet can approach the Sun from any direction even from above or below. Some comets crash into the Sun, some are flung back into space never to be seen again while others are swung into very elliptical orbits returning again and again from a few years to many thousands of years. The most famous comet, Halley’s Comet, returns once every 76 years. But no matter which way the comet is travelling the tail always points away from the Sun, so if the comet has swung around the Sun and is on its way back into space it will travel tail first. comet is usually named after the person who first discovers it but oddly Edmund Halley was not the first person to discover Halley’s Comet. What Halley did was to realise that a comet that had been seen every 76 years and was even depicted in the Bayeux tapestry of 1066 was, in fact, the same comet returning. He predicted its return in 1758. Unfortunately Halley didn’t see the comet return as he died in 1742 but the comet was named after him in his honour. nlike meteors or shooting stars that streak across the sky in a brief second or two comets can remain in the sky for several weeks. The last really bright comet was Hale Bopp which was visible for 18 months in 19951997. If Comet PanSTARRS does eventually show itself then it should remain visible close to the western horizon throughout the month of March.

Welshstralian St.David’s Day at Miraflores! Although St. David's day is the 1st March, Miraflores Bowls Club's celebration of the day was held on Saturday 2nd March to avoid clashing with the league. This year it was decided to hold a fun day playing "Welshstralian pairs" which was a form of Australian pairs played on a 6-end set basis against different teams and on different rinks. The weather was not great at the outset as the hardy souls gathered on a cloudy and windy morning, but it improved as the day wore on, finishing in glorious sunshine. Pairs were drawn at the start and the sets format enabled all involved to enjoy a fun social day. The event was won by Brigitte Gunn and Carol Cooke on shot

difference. Afterwards most of the participants stayed on for a delicious lamb kebab lunch keeping up the theme for the day prepared by Craig. Grant presented the magnificent trophy to the winning team which was received and treated with the deference it deserved! Finally, the next event at the club is the St. Patrick's Day drawn triples which is being held on the morning of 17th March. All bowlers are welcome. Contact Craig for more information on 655196616 or email info@mirafloreslbc.com The winners pictured are (From L to R): Carol Cooke (holding the trophy), Grant and Brigitte Gunn. By Grant Frost

Wayne’s weekly poker tips Poker is a game based on information availability. We don’t ever know for sure how good or bad another player’s hand is – often until it’s too late. But because poker is a game of human interaction, we sometimes receive clues from other players, based on changes in their betting patterns or their physical demeanour, which indicates the strength or weakness of their hand. These are called “poker tells”. A player gains an advantage if he observes and understands the meaning of another player’s tell, particularly if the poker tell is unconscious and reliable. Sometimes a player may even fake a tell, hoping to induce his opponents to make poor judgements in response to the false poker tell. After all, poker is a game of deception Poker tells come in two forms; • Betting patterns • Physical tells Betting patterns; are the most dependable poker tells for on-line and live. By studying the way a player bets both past and present, you will have more information and be better able to judge whether to

check or bet. Betting patterns will remain your main tells. Physical tells; obviously these are only applicable to live poker, where they can help a player win some crucial pots over a lifetime. Unless you are a savant, learning and analysing a cluster of tells does take some work Beginner Poker Tells; It’s important to recognise that beginners will not go to great lengths to confuse you with reverse tells. Don’t read too much into their bet timing or the body language

they are giving off. If you are going to look for tells, just know that the most obvious ones are going to be the most accurate. Online Poker Tells; Since you can’t physically see your opponents when playing online, the physical tells we’ve mentioned are clearly not going to apply. Remember though, that betting patterns are the most reliable of all poker tells. Look out for changes in a player’s betting pattern and observe their timing. A large amount of time before calling can sometimes

mean a weak hand, and a fast call usually means a drawing hand. However, timing tells aren’t always reliable, since for all you know the online player is also reading a book, watching TV, multi-tabling or rushing back from the bathroom.

Brian McDermott axed by Reading

Málaga manager Manuel Pellegrini rested Isco and Joaquin in preparation for Wednesday's Champions League game against Porto After a good Valladolid start it was Málaga who went in front on 8 minutes A good Piazon free kick was met by an unmarked Demichelis (pictured) to head home. That goal gave Málaga confidence and they looked a better side than in recent weeks. Chances were at a premium at both ends as both teams looked evenly matched. After 22 minutes Willy saved well from Rukavina but on 41

Reading players have come out in support of former manager Brian McDermott after Russian owner Anton Zingarevich made the decision to axe the 51-yearold on Monday. Former Swindon boss and Celtic player Paolo Di Canio has been installed as the early bookmakers' favourite and was amongst the crowd for the Royals' 2-1 loss to Villa on Saturday, which proved to be McDermott's last game in charge of the club he has worked for in a number of roles since 2000.

minutes Valladolid were level. Manucho found space behind Demichelis to head home from a perfect cross. In the second half, torrential rain set in and it seemed to have a detrimental effect on Malaga's football. Duda shot just wide for Malaga in the 63rd minute and Manucho had a couple of half chances for Valladolid as they went in search of the winner. With 3 minutes to go another new Malaga signing Pedro Morales fired his shot just over, but in the end a draw was a fair result and Malaga go into Wednesday’s game in better heart, on what could be a historic night. Next league game is Sunday midday against Espanyol at La Rosaleda. Report by Scott Forbes

Tiger wins again Tiger Woods won the WGC Cadillac Championship by two strokes to secure his second title in four U.S. PGA Tour starts this season. Woods shot a 1-underpar 71 during the final round at the TPC Blue Monster at Doral in Miami, Florida, and finished with a four-round total of 19-under 269. Steve Stricker was second at 17-under par, three shots better than Phil Mickelson, Graeme McDowell, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott. It’s the 17th career World Golf Championships title for Woods and his first since the 2009

Bridgestone Invitational. The WGC Cadillac Championship becomes the fourth tournament he’s won at least seven times and pushes his career PGA Tour win total to 76, six behind Sam Snead for the most alltime. “It was one of those weeks where I felt good about how I was playing, made some putts and pretty much got it rolling,” Woods, 37, said at the trophy presentation ceremony. This is the first time Woods has won two PGA Tour events in a season prior to the Masters since 2008.
