Cameron talks tough about migrants
Amid growing fears of a flood of Romanian and Bulgarian migrants entering the UK when existing controls are eliminated at the beginning of next year.
David Cameron said in a speech in Ipswich that they will have to prove they are "genuinely seeking employment" to claim UK jobless benefits for more than six months. The prime minister said it was among measures to ensure people came to the UK "for the right reasons" after it became a "soft touch" under Labour.
Mr Cameron said: "We can't stop these transitional controls coming to an end. But what we can do, is make sure that those who come here from the EU – or further afield – do so for the right reasons: that they come here because they want to contribute to our country, not because they are drawn by the attractiveness of our benefits system, or by the opportunity to use our public services."
The prime minister added: "Under the last government immigration in this country was too high and out of control. Put simply, Britain was a soft touch." He said immigrants in future would be "subject to full conditionality and
work search requirements and you will have to show you are genuinely seeking employment – if you fail that test, you will lose your benefit".
He said: "And as a migrant, we're only going to give you six months to be a jobseeker. After that benefits will be cut off unless you really can prove not just that you are genuinely seeking employment but also that you have a genuine chance of getting a job. "We're going to make that assessment a real and robust one and, yes, it's going to include whether your ability to speak English is a barrier to work."
Mr Cameron said changes to health care would be introduced, with the UK getting "better" at charging", "reciprocal charging foreign governments for treatment provided to nonworking overseas nationals. He added that action was being taken to tackle illegal immigration, including making private landlords responsible for
making sure their tenants were legally in the UK – and facing fines if it turned out they were not.
Immigrants would be kept off council house waiting lists in England for at least two years, under plans for councils to introduce a residency test.
Mr Cameron said: "We cannot have a culture of something for nothing. New migrants should not expect to be given a home on arrival."

Choccy wokky A lot of you will know by now that I am prone to eating just the odd chocolate biscuit or ten from time to time. I have started my diet again as the weight started to come back – where does it come from? – and needed to do something about it before all my clothes stopped fitting me again. So off to Simply Slimming I went at The Olive Tree in Coin and it was confession time. Since I have been ill, my appetite has been virtually nil and I couldn’t understand how I I’d put on three pounds in the last three weeks. At the end of the meeting I brought in the box from my favourite bikkies (apart from the one’s our Sue here in the office brings in from timeto-time that is, todays being a scrummy butter bikkie) and Gillie said: “ Hah, have you seen the fat content of these!” Well, actually, no because I didn’t even look. They are the ones from lidl that have half a ton of delicious chocolate as a covering and my favourites are the Capuccino flavoured ones. So, now I will have to open one of the bars and just eat a section or two of the biscuit instead of the whole thing. But that’s the beauty of this diet, I can still have the things I like – just not as much of it – and I promise to be good. Honest! Actually I have to be to get into my frock for the RAFA Easter Ball at the Tamisa at the weekend or I’ll be wearing a black bin bag. If you want to join us at the ball, you can buy tickets by calling 952 567 412, 607 586 894 or the Tamisa Golf Hotel on 952 585 988 – it should prove to be a great night out – see you there in my lovely gown or a binbag!

For Labour, shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said: "It's right to have conditions on benefits and public services for immigration. Most people who come to
this country work and contribute, but there are restrictions because the system needs to be fair and seen to be fair. "However, the government's proposals announced today seem to be very confused and are unravelling. We won't support an arms race on immigration rhetoric, we want practical and sensible measures that make the system work." Last Friday Lib Dem leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg gave
Cyprus crisis 'could spread' Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said on Sunday before the emergency meeting of EU finance ministers that the Cyprus crisis could spread to other European countries. He was speaking after Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Dutch finance minister who, as head of the Eurogroup, told Reuters and the Financial Times later on Sunday: "If there is a risk in a bank our first question should be “OK, what are you in the bank going to do about that?'" Many economists and politicians took this to mean that the Cyprus solution would be the model to use for other countries in the same situation.
However, Dijsselbloem said later that Cyprus was "a specific case with exceptional challenges", but too late to stop the financial markets from reacting negatively. In Cyprus itself, the finance minister has confirmed that Cypriot depositors with less than €100,000 in their accounts "will not be hit", but people with more than this could see about 40% of their deposits converted into bank shares. "The exact percentage is not ... yet decided but it is going to be significant," he said. The final figure will depend on how the government decides to protect pensions. All Cypriot banks will remain closed until Thursday and

€100,000 in Bank of Cyprus and Laiki or Popular Bank. Laiki will be shut down, and deposits under €100,000, which are guaranteed by the state under EU law, will move into the Bank of Cyprus to create a "good bank".
The central bank now says all will remain closed to ensure the whole banking system functions "smoothly". Banks have not been open since March 15th. Their reopening had been expected after Cyprus agreed a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union (EU) that releases €10bn in support. It was conditional on Cyprus itself raising €5.8 billion, most of which looks likely to come from depositors with more than

Mortgage protesters target politicians The Partido Popular's Parliamentary Group said on Monday that at least eight MPs have suffered protests outside their homes or offices by the Mortgage Victims' Platform (PAH) and are studying measures to protect themselves, which could include legal action. The PP's MP for Asturias, Carmen Rodriguez Maniega, lodged a "denuncia" with the police
last week, alleging she had been chased through the streets of Avila by members of the Platform shouting "assassin, criminal". She said she and one of her children had also been accosted out PP headquarters. The PAH insists that it has only participated in peaceful gatherings outside the politicians' homes or offices in an attempt to open their eyes to the
Price of gas bottle up The price of a bottle of butane gas went up by five per cent on Tuesday to €17.13 (IVA plus special taxes included), from €16.32.
Industry minister José Manuel Soria said a new mechanism had been introduced to establish the price of bottled gas – used by some eight million
consumers – and would be revised every two instead of every three months.
He added that the price revision could never be more than five per cent up or down and that the new price cannot be higher than €17.50, which means that petrol stations cannot slap on a 50 cent charge for handling.

The central government’s delegate to the Madrid regional parliament, Cristina Cifuentes, suggested during a radio interview on Monday that members of the PAH had supported the Basque terrorist group ETA. She was referring to PAH spokeswoman Ada Colau, who said she has not ruled out filing a lawsuit against Cifuentes. Colau said that PAH was “an independent, apolitical and plural” organisation.
She went on to say that; “This is immoral, and we are not ruling out taking legal action for defamation and creating a climate of confusion and tension.” However, she later

Madrid, which is competing with Istanbul and Tokyo for the 2020 Games, had been presenting its candidacy to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) commission, headed by IOC vice president Craig Reedie, this week. He told the news conference that ended the four-day visit that the commission had been "greatly impressed" by the presentation. Reedie's
comments
were echoed by Gilbert Felli, the IOC's Olympic Games executive director. He told the news conference: "The cities always learn from the process of candidacies. We have seen that with the quality of what has been presented to us here. So yes it's an improvement with the process of the candidacy of Madrid."
Each city delivered their candidature files to the IOC in January and on-site inspections by an evaluation commission began in Tokyo this month. Istanbul will host the commission from March 24th to 27th before it publishes a technical assessment at the beginning of July.

Stalin's planes protected Franco's Spain Photographs taken by a member of a wealthy family in Leon have revealed that Franco used planes captured from the Republican side during the Civil War to patrol Spanish skies in 1942.
Some of the planes originated in the US and France but many of them had been sent by Stalin. Their use by Franco – who loathed everything to do with the Soviet Union and Communism – is one more
example of the dictator's pragmatism.
Javier González Fernández-Llamazares, curator of the Banca Fernández-Llamazares Archive in the Leon Museum, discovered the album of photographs taken by Jose Pallares, whose family owned the building in the city which now houses the museum. At age 18, he had joined Franco's navy during the
Civil War and transferred the Air Force at the beginning of World War II.
As a result he was able to take photos of a Polikarpov SB-5 'Katiuska' and several Polikarpov I15 which were stationed at
the airfields at Los Llanos, in Albacete province, and at Villanubla, in Valladolid province.
Pallares died in an air crash in 1947 but his photos live on and are on show at the Leon Museum.
Speculation about Rajoy's Paris visit Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy flew to Paris on Tuesday, allegedly for talks with President Francois Hollande. However, there is speculation in Madrid that the real reason for the visit was the Spain–France football match that night. Hollande likes to watch France play accompanied by the opposing team's head of government. That
was the case a few months back when France played a friendly match against Germany, which Hollande watched with Angela Merkel.
However, that match had been planned months earlier to mark the 50th anniversary of FrancoGerman reconciliation after WWII. The two leaders agreed on Rajoy's visit at the last meeting of
the European Council on March 14th and 15th, ostensibly for talks about "relations between the two countries".
In fact, relations between the two countries have never been better, mainly because of the good chemistry between Hollande and Rajoy, so there isn't much to discuss. When asked if the visit would have taken
place even without the match, a government spokesman said he "believed so". He also revealed that Rajoy travelled in a Defence Ministry's14-seater Falcon plane, at a cost of €15,000.
The spokesman added that there would be no other expenses because Rajoy planned to return the same night.

Motorists on the roads over the Easter weekend could find themselves being tailed from the sky, the Traffic authority revealed last Thursday, when director María Seguí unveiled a new traffic helicopter radar system, to be used during the week-long Easter break. More Spaniards living abroad
The number of Spaniards seeking work abroad continued unabated last year, and is now nearing the two-million mark. The figure is compiled by the register of Spaniards resident abroad (PErE), based on the number of Spaniards who register at Spanish consulates around the world in order to be able to vote in elections back home. However, at least two thirds were born abroad and adopted Spanish nationality when they came to Spain looking for a better life. Figures released last week by the National Statistics institute show that currently there are 5.7 million foreigners living in Spain, out of a population of just over 46 million.

World News NY mayor bankrolls gun law campaign
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is bankrolling a $12 million advertising campaign for tougher gun control laws. The television adverts will run in 13 states, urging voters to get their senators to back comprehensive background checks for gun buyers. Mr Bloomberg, a strong supporter of gun control, has said he is cautiously optimistic of winning over Congress, which is due next month to consider legislation drafted by the Obama administration in response to last December's shooting at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, that killed 20 children and six adults. President Obama's proposed ban on military-
style assault weapons was dropped from the bill last week when it became clear it would not find sufficient support in the Republicanled House of Representatives.
Instead, gun control advocates are now focusing on another of Mr Obama's proposals – to implement wider background checks on people purchasing firearms.
Currently, around 40% of gun sales – among them those conducted at local gun shows – are exempt from such checks. Gun
control is a particular issue in the 13 states being targeted by the television advert this week.
National Rifle Association (NRA) chief executive Wayne LaPierre told NBC television's Meet the Press on Sunday that Mr Bloomberg "can't spend enough of his $27 billion to try to impose his will on the American public". Mr Bloomberg told the same programme that opinion polls showed there was overwhelming public support for tighter background checks.

Public Prosecutor Daniel Cesar Azeredo Avelino said a more transparent labelling system would make it easier for consumers to avoid buying meat from the Amazon and make it harder for shops to sell items from producers who flouted the law. He said he would now work towards
reaching a similar deal with smaller shops.
Under the deal, supermarkets have promised to reject meat from areas of the Amazon where illegal activities take place, such as illegal logging and invasion of public land.

Ford regrets Berlusconi advert
The Indian unit of Ford Motor Company has apologised for an advertisement showing former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi with three women in the trunk of a car. The advert, showing three women bound and gagged in the trunk of a Ford Figo car, appeared on a website. Mr Berlusconi was shown in the driver's seat with a slogan: "Leave your worries behind with Figo's extra-large boot".
The advert has not been used commercially. It was posted online by the India-based advertising agency hired by Ford. The company said it regretted the incident and called the images "contrary to the standards of professionalism and decency within Ford". ArGenTInA
Garzon asks Pope to open archives
Former Spanish High Court Judge Baltasar Garzón has asked Pope Francis I to release the Vatican’s files from the 1976-1983 Dirty War in Argentina to help in the ongoing investigations into human rights violations during the military dictatorship. “As a state with diplomatic representation, the Vatican received reports from its diplomats in Argentina,” Garzón told reporters in Buenos Aires, where he was taking part in a ceremony to pay tribute to the victims of the military regime. The Supreme Court suspended Garzón last year, accusing him of breaching his bench duties in a political corruption case. He now works as an advisor for the human rights committee in the Argentinian Congress. Some 30,000 people are said to have disappeared, been tortured or killed during the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983.

Around 1,000 dead ducks packed in woven bags were pulled from a river in southwest China last week, after residents alerted the environmental department . Officials said the local people and livestock were not at risk as the river was not used for drinking water. The news came as the toll of dead pigs pulled from Shanghai's Huangpu river passed 16,000. Officials said they were unable to determine the cause of death as some of the ducks were already decomposed, adding that the bodies had been disinfected and buried. The news has prompted concern and criticism from some users on weibo, China's version of Twitter, with many expressing incredulity at the government's assurance that the water is safe. "Dead pigs, dead ducks ... this soup is getting thicker and thicker," wrote one person.

What the UK budget means to you The Chancellor of the Exchequer delivered his Budget to Parliament on 20th March 2013, alongside the publication of the Office for Budget Responsibility’s updated forecasts for growth and borrowing . This report on what the budget means in a nutshell was sent in by the Gibraltar Government.

A £5.4 billion package of financial support to tackle long-term problems in the housing market including the launch of Help to Buy – which offers two schemes aimed at helping those who want to get on, or move up, the housing ladder. Providing £1.6 billion of funding for an industrial strategy – from this fund the Government will work with industry to create an Aerospace Technology Institute.
Taking forward Lord Heseltine’s recommendation on the creation of a Single Local Growth Fund.
Fairness
This Budget includes measures to build a fairer society by making the tax and welfare system fairer, by supporting aspiration and by keeping costs down for households and business, including:
Meeting the commitment to make the first £10,000 of people’s income free from income tax a year ahead of schedule – the personal allowance will be increased by £560 to £10,000 in 2014-15. By April 2014, 2.7 million individuals low-income people under 65 will have been lifted out of income tax altogether .
Cancelling the fuel duty increase that was planned for 1st September 2013 to support motorists and businesses – fuel duty will have been frozen for nearly three and a half years, with pump prices 13p per litre lower from April 2013 than under previously announced plans.
Introducing a Tax-free Childcare scheme so that working families can pay for childcare effectively tax-free.
Introducing the singletier State Pension and implementing the £72,000 cap on social care costs from April 2016; together these changes will help ensure the country can afford to support an ageing population, while at the same time help ensure everyone knows what support they will receive in old age. Cancelling the beer duty escalator and reducing general beer duty by two per cent from 25 March 2013 – worth a penny on a pint of beer.
A significant crack down on tax avoidance and evasion, which will in total raise over £4.6 billion in new revenue over the next five years. The Chancellor also announced new steps to ensure active monetary policy continues to play a full role in supporting the economy with an updated remit for the Monetary Policy Committee. To get a more in-depth report on the 2013 budget go to http://www.hmtreasury.gov.uk/budget20 13.htm Since the budget was announced, Prime Minister David Cameron has also announced a crackdown on the number of hand-outs available to immigrants including housing benefits and the possibility of jumping the queue for council housing.

Freezy bunnies
Never mind Easter eggs and baby bunnies, it looks as though we could be building snowmen rather than heralding in the first warm days of spring this year. We have just had a weekend of freezing weather with football matches cancelled and snow blocking roads and causing power disruption, leaving thousands of homes without electricity. There will be some respite this week, but forecasters are predicting severe weather on Good Friday, which means we could have the first white Easter in five years as we enter British summertime. UK
Cyprus savers
There are many British passport holders resident in Cyprus fearing the worse for their personal finances as the country secures a 10 billion Euro (£8.5-billion) rescue package to save the banking system from collapse and the country from bankruptcy. Under the plan, Cyprus’ second largest bank will be restructured and holders of bank deposits of more than 100,000 Euros will have to take losses. There has been a lot of speculation, but the losses will be worked out in the coming weeks and analysts believe they will be substantial. Savers with smaller deposits are protected by the EU’s deposit insurance guarantee.

Scout Duchess
The Duchess of Cambridge has joined the Scouts, braving ice and snow to attend a Scout camp in the Lake District last week. UK Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: “The Duchess has an incredibly busy life, yet, since she joined the Scouts, she has so generously managed to volunteer some incredible time to help and get involved with her local group.” The Cub Scouts from Cumbria and Manchester were trying outdoor cooking, fire lighting and tree climbing.

Queen celebrates One dies 150 years of London every Underground minute Most visitors to Britain will at some stage have used the London Underground to get across the city and if you talk to regular users you will find they either love it or hate it.
Parts of it are quite old and the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh recently visited the Baker Street tube station to mark the 150th anniversary of the underground. Also present was the Duchess of Cambridge and she was given a “baby on board” badge. They are available to pregnant women to overcome the awkwardness of having to ask a man to give up his seat. She suggested she would wear it at home!
The Queen is no stranger to the underground and the palace tells us that she took her first journey in May 1939, when, aged 13, she was accompanied by her Governess, Marion Crawford, and her sister, Princess Margaret.
In 2010 she visited Aldgate tube station to meet staff and view a memorial plaque dedicated to seven people killed there during the bombings in July 2005.
On this most recent visit the royal guests were shown the plush interior of the oldest operational underground carriage in existence. First used in 1892, it had been used as a garden shed, US servicemen’s club and military tailor’s workshop, but it has recently been restored for the London Transport Museum. Baker Street was part of the first stretch of the underground between Paddington and Farringdon.

A foreign office statement on the number of deaths around the world resulting from the use of conventional weapons – “On average a man, woman or child dies every minute as a result of armed violence. Two thirds of them die in countries that are not officially in conflict.” It is the reason that British Foreign Secretary William Hague has joined the foreign ministers of Argentina, Australia, Costa Rica, Finland, Japan, and Kenya in releasing a joint statement calling for a comprehensive and universal arms treaty. They said in a joint statement: “The unregulated trade in conventional arms undermines peace, security, stability and human rights. There are far more harmless commodities that are more regulated than the trade in conventional arms. It is time to correct this situation.” written by Vic Gardner
The bad, very bad and downright ugly come together in London Bruce Reynolds was famous throughout the east end of London and the capital’s villains turned out to say a final farewell to the “mastermind” behind the 1963 Great Train Robbery at St. Bartholomew The Great church in Smithfield, London. He died in his sleep on February 28th, aged 81, a few months before the 50th anniversary of the heist.
Among the “guests” were, of course, Ronnie Biggs, now 83-years-old and in a wheelchair, who fled the UK to live a life of luxury for 36 years in Brazil until his money ran out and who still describes the robbery as “an adventure” – despite engine driver Jack Mills having been coshed on the head with an iron bar by the gang Biggs was part of. Mills died just seven years after the attack of cancer but his family has always maintained that it was the robbery that led to his early death. The robbery netted more than £2.6million in used bank notes, around £40 million in today’s money and the biggest of
its kind. Biggs managed a two finger salute to cameramen.
Also present was Dave Courtney (The Meat Cleaver Man) who claims to have been shot, stabbed and had his nose bitten off and says he’s had to kill to stay alive. He claims he was the “role model for Vinnie Jones character in Lock Stock”.
Then there was Chris Lambrianou, 75 who was given a 15 year prison sentence in 1967 for his part in the murder of Jack “The Hat” McVitie. He later turned to religion and leads a quiet life in The Cotswolds. And “Brown Bread Fred” – Freddie Foreman, now 80, who was a key member of the Kray gang and linked to the killing of “Mad Axeman” Frank Mitchell and Tommy “Ginger” Marks. In a tribute read out on his behalf, Biggs told a 200-strong congregation: ‘It was Bruce who set me off on an adventure that was to change my life, and it was typical of Bruce that he was there at the end to help me back from Brazil to Britain. I am proud to have had Bruce Richard Reynolds as a friend. He was a good man.’ Courtney said of Reynolds: ‘He was a real class act. He used to wear the cravat and everything. He was a monarch for naughty people. The Great Train Robbery – that was the big one for him. He always used to call it his Moby Dick.’ Reynolds, an antique dealer nicknamed ‘Napoleon’, boasted that he wanted to pull off a crime that would go down in history and make him rich.
He succeeded in one of those ambitions – but was broke by the time he was arrested five years later in Torquay after returning to Britain from a succession of hideouts in Mexico and Canada. He was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in jail. In the 1980s he was jailed again, for drug dealing.

Griffith has been in Malaga several times for Easter Week with her husband, who participates actively in several brotherhoods, but this is the first year that she has actually done so, instead of watching the processions from the balcony of his parents' flat in the city centre. Banderas told reporters just before the procession left the Church of San Juan: "The pointed hood gives me a freedom I no longer find walking down the street with my face uncovered – it puts me at the same level as everybody else, we're all even. That's what the pointed hood is all about, hiding your identity and going from being an individual to being part of a group." He added: "I believe that Holy Week in the 21st century must involve the entire community. Net tightens around corruption ringleaders After a marathon session in her Seville courtroom overnight on Friday to beat the 72-hour limit on holding suspects without charge, Judge Mercedes Alaya sent four more people to jail in the ongoing investigation into the so-called ERE case. The ERE fund was set up to aid businesses obliged to lay off workers due to the recession. However, the people appointed to oversee the fund allegedly siphoned off huge sums by awarding early retirement packages and grants to individuals and firms who did not qualify for assistance. So far, Judge Alaya's investigations have revealed that €136 million of public money was allegedly embezzled between 2001 and 2010. Over the weekend, Eduardo Pascual and María Vaqué, the former directors of the Eurobank group – whose subsidiary Vitalia was responsible for processing layoff applications submitted to the ERE fund set up by the regional government of Andalusia – were jailed without bail. Eduardo Leal and Ismael Sierra, two of the front men used to divert funds from the public coffers to the conspirators via vastly inflated commissions of up
Taxi drivers call off airport strike Some 500 taxi drivers agreed at a meeting on Sunday to call off the week-long strike scheduled to start on Monday, after the Junta de Andalucia's provincial delegate Manuel Garcia said Decree 11/85 would be modified to meet their demands. The decree allows taxi drivers from outside Malaga city to pick up passengers for their return journeys from the airport and the port. Another incentive for calling off the strike is that the period from Easter Wednesday to Easter Monday is one of high earnings for taxi drivers – when around 1,500 flights arrive at or leave Malaga airport and some 250,000 travellers require the taxi service.
to 20 per cent, had bail set at €50,000. Pascual and Vaqué – who, along with 13 other former Eurobank employees, are under a separate High Court investigation for fraud, wrongful appropriation and money laundering – are accused of bribery, corruption, falsification of documents and embezzlement, among other fiscal crimes. Prosecutors are seeking between five and seven years in jail for the pair. The latest arrest orders follow the detentions of former Vitalia director Antonio Albarracín, an intermediary, Juan Lanzas – who is accused of diverting €1.8 million through front companies – and former employment chief in the regional government, Javier Guerrero, who was ordered back to prison as a flight risk last week after being initially released on bail.

largest corruption scandal yet to engulf the Andalusian Socialist Party (PSOE-A), which has governed the region for 32 years. Initially, the PSOEA attempted to reduce the scope of the case, but Alaya's investigations and the huge suspect count – more than 80 so far – show the rot goes much deeper than suspected.
The Partido Party has claimed that up to €1 billion has been misappropriated in the case and on Sunday its leader in Andalusia, Juan Ignacio Zoida, accused regional premier José Antonio Griñán of acting as the "cashier" for the ERE scandal. Griñán denies any responsibility and has offered to appear in Parliament in Madrid to defend himself against the charge. Members of the Guardia Civil helping to investigate the case have said that what has been uncovered so far is "just the tip of the iceberg".

Florists win cemetery battle
the company which manages the city's San Jose cemetery has lost its case against three florists who lend ladders to clients who want to clean the niches and place flowers on the top levels. emucesa argued that this was against the contract signed with the florists – exclusively to sell flowers – and that lending ladders to clients was a risk as they were not covered by insurance in the case of falls. the florists argued that the company brought the case because it charges €6 for members of its staff to clean the highest niches. the judge ruled in favour of the florists but required them to warn users of their ladders of the risk involved. Plan to save cats
Most of the stray cats that end up at the city's dog pound are put to sleep but now the City Council is willing to put into practice a plan proposed by the association for abandoned animals which involves spaying them instead. Socialist councillor Begoña Medina said that putting them to sleep wasn't the answer and cited the example of Barcelona which banned the practice ten years ago and sterilises them whenever possible. a pilot colony of stray cats has already been located and the council hopes to start sterilising them in the near future.

Truth will out
I
've been waiting for months to write this column, champing at the bit until Judge Mercedes Alaya re-appeared. She started to investigate the ERE case just over a year ago then went inexplicably quiet after the March 25th regional election last year kept the Socialist Party in power. What came out then was quite tame – Javier Guerrero, the man in charge of overseeing the ERE fund for companies needing to downsize, and his chauffeur spent some €45,000 a month for several years on cocaine and prostitutes. Guerrero had also allocated funds to companies which spent it on anything but pensioning off their the surplus staff. A lot of individuals also enjoyed his largesse and spent the money on buying plots of land and houses.
I
was convinced the judge had somehow been silenced but if foul play had been involved, it would have made the headlines. As it turns out, Alaya had developed an extremely painful nervous complaint, brought on by the pressure and threats she received to drop the case, which kept her out of circulation until a few weeks back.
O
ne of the juiciest bits to come out this time around involves a former UGT union leader, Juan Lanzas. The Guardia Civil found €82,000 in €500 notes hidden in a box under his bed when they searched his home a few days ago. I don't know how his lawyer managed to keep a straight face when he told the press it was quite normal to have that much money in cash lying around the house. Judge Alaya has since instructed the Guardia to find the other €10 million she thinks Lanzas has squirreled away somewhere. Lanzas allegedly earned the money by charging €600,000 every time he arranged an ERE handout for a company – and he brokered a lot of them. Nice work if you can get it!
B
oth the UGT and the Workers Commissions (CCOO) have strongly denied having received any money from the ERE fund but perhaps they didn't need it. An article in La Razon newspaper on Tuesday claimed the Junta de Andalucia had given a total of €395 million in handouts to the two unions since it set up the ERE fund in 2001 – one way of making sure people vote for you.
T
he setting up of the fund itself was very irregular. Then premier Manuel Chaves himself made sure it was not limited by existing protocols and two of the Junta's councillors drew up an agreement to give it a semblance of
legality. When the scandals began to surface years later, the Junta's comptroller at the time, Manuel Gomez, said the ERE "procedure violated the most elemental principles of objectivity, openness, transparency and financial rigour that should govern the behaviour of the Administration".
J
ust how much money went "astray" can only be speculated about at this stage. Some sources put it as high as €1,217 million, a lot of it finding its way to companies set up for the sole purpose of receiving ERE funds. If that figure is anywhere near correct, this could turn out to be the biggest corruption case since the transition to democracy 35 years ago.
T
he Partido Popular says Manuel Chaves and his successor, Jose Antonio Griñan, must have known what was going on – Chaves oversaw the setting up of the fund and Griñan was his right-hand man all those years. Griñan closed the fund in 2010 after he took over from Chaves and now swears he knew nothing about any illegal shenanigans.
T
he most frustrating thing right now is that it's Easter Week and all the political chat shows have gone on holiday so there is noone around to demand explanations from the Socialists, who've been studiously ignoring the matter. I suspect that's why they're making such a big fuss about former PP treasure Luis Barcenas having €22 million in a Swiss bank account – peanuts when compared to the ERE.
T
he United Left (IU) which is keeping the Socialist Party in power in Andalucia may end up withdrawing its support which would probably lead to another regional election. The IU has been one of the loudest s**t stirrers in the Barcenas affair so it can't very well try to whitewash the ERE scandal. No doubt it will hang on in there as long as possible because it's never been so close to power before. In the event of a new election, it's highly unlikely that the IU would win a majority.
T

he PP is badly tainted by the Barcenas affair but that's taking place in Madrid, Valencia and other points north so the Andalucians might allow themselves to be swayed by numbers – €22 million as opposed to €1,217 million. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to work out who stole the most.

Culture of secrecy Writes for the English language version of
T
he hijinks at the High Court over who gets to investigate the so-called “Bárcenas papers” has become an unnecessary obstacle to an important corruption investigation that needs a transparent process to be clarified once and for all. Two judges on the bench, Javier Gómez Bermúdez and Pablo Ruz, have been battling it out through a series of filings over the past week, arguing that each have the right to assume jurisdiction in the case.
T
he records allegedly kept by former Partido Popular (PP) treasurer Luis Bárcenas arrived at the High Court earlier this year when anti-corruption prosecutors presented a case to determine their authenticity and to see if there was any connection to the ex-PP official’s bank account deposits of €22 million he held in Switzerland over the years.
B
árcenas, who is being investigated for tax fraud, maintains that the PP accounting ledgers are fake. The papers show fat bonuses going to top party officials, including Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, on top of their regular salaries, and were first published by El País on January 31st. The PP has denied the information contained in the ledgers and Bárcenas has refused to take a handwriting test.
T
he case gets more complicated when police investigators found some accounting similarities in the ledgers and in records kept by indicted members of the Gürtel kickbacks-for-contracts inquiry. This massive investigation, which broke in 2009 with the arrests of about a dozen businessmen, has ensnared PP local governments in Madrid, Valencia and Castilla-La Mancha where officials are alleged to have received generous payoffs in exchange for juicy public contracts.
J
ust as Judge Ruz, who has been handling the Gürtel probe, began opening proceedings on the Bárcenas ledgers based on this reported connection uncovered by the police, the United Left (IU) coalition’s criminal complaint filed against the PP for illegal financing was accepted by his colleague Gómez.
T
he IU wants the High Court to investigate the nearly two dozen private company officials whose names appear in the party’s balance sheets as giving fat donations to the PP over an 18-year period. Some of these contributions exceeded amounts prescribed by law.
A
mong the names are some very important builders and construction magnates who did indeed win contracts under the PP during the boom years when José María Aznar was in office.
J
udge Gómez, who has the IU complaint, asked Ruz to recuse himself from investigating the ledgers because he assumed jurisdiction in that case. Now the two judges are battling each other in a war of filings, each giving their own reasons why the ledgers should stay inside their own courtrooms. It is an unnecessary battle that only goes to show how Spain’s top investigative criminal court is filled with intrigue and presided over by egos that are not serving justice well.
T
he PP financing and kickbacks investigations are serious inquiries that have helped to undermine the public’s confidence in their leaders, and are packed with enough ammunition to destroy one of the country’s major parties and even bring down the Rajoy government, if the allegations turn out to be true. That is why the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) and the Attorney General’s Office should not allow this tug-ofwar at the High Court to take place. A special independent prosecutor, similar to one appointed during Watergate, must be assigned this investigation with just one judge overseeing this massive case.
U
nfortunately current law provides for no such remedies and there are no transparent guarantees at this time to ensure that any court investigation would be non-partisan.
T
he ball is on the side of the PP’s pitch: if the ruling party truly wanted to show that it had nothing to hide, then it would go ahead and allow a special committee to be formed in Parliament where all this evidence and testimony could be aired. But that is a risk too high for any party in power, not just for the PP.
I
t would set a dangerous precedent by paving the way for more transparent processes to take shape in the future and destroy the culture of secrecy within Spain’s political parties.

The Pine Processionary Moth larvae These fluffy-looking caterpillar-like larvae, are pictured below in processional formation going along a tree branch, and in their cocoon (right). They are sometimes referred to as pine processionary caterpillars, their Latin name is Thaumetopoea pityocampa larvae.
These slowly moving skeins arouse a dog's curiosity. The dog wants to play with them so it hits them playfully with its paw. When wounded, the larvae secrete an acidic poison, which stings painfully upon contact with the skin. To ease the pain, the dog starts to lick its paw, thus effectively spreading the poison to its
mouth. Here, the poison can cause extensive and severe tissue damage.
Cats, on the other hand, seem to have an inherent fear of the larvae and it is quite unusual for a cat to be poisoned.
This year there seems to have been an increase in the amount of larvae, maybe due to the the hard winds last winter, which effectively spread the larvae from tree to tree.
Keep your dogs away
Depending on the weather, and consequently the heat, the pine
caterpillar can be active between January and April. They form small cocoons that resemble cotton balls on the branches of the pine trees. During the winter, these cocoons develop into the larvae. In early spring, the fully developed larvae climb down the trees. They advance in large colonies – processions – creeping forwards looking for food. Later in spring they dig themselves underground and then develop into adult moths in mid-May.
The larvae are small, anywhere from 3 to 5 centimetres (1.1” – 1.8”) and are covered in hair. They resemble centipedes clinging on to each other and their processions can be up to 50 metres long.
As mentioned before, the larvae secrete an acidic poison, which causes severe infections in the dog's mouth or tongue upon contact. If you suspect that your pet has come in contact with them, immediately consult your nearest veterinarian.
Signs and symptoms
It is easy to detect the problem early, as a poisoned dog has extremely powerful salivation. The poison quickly leads to a severe allergic reaction. This can lead to lowered blood pressure, which, in turn, can lead to shock and even death. Another sign is that dogs' tongues usually experience heavy swelling.
Dogs that survive the first stage usually develop an infection on the tongue and/or throat. After some time gangrene can occur, causing parts of the tongue to fall off.
First aid
This is an emergency and the dog should be placed under a vet's attention as soon as possible. But as first aid, it is advisable to flush the dog's mouth with plenty of water. Be sure to remember that the poison is also harmful to humans, so wear protective gloves.
Preventive measures
In public areas, the municipality is obligated to poison the cocoons. In the countryside, however, it is recommended to take care where you walk your dog. On the pine trees it is common to see the cocoons hanging down, so during spring, avoid walking your dog in areas where there are ”infected” pine trees. If you're uncertain, place a muzzle on your dog, preventing it from getting the poison in its mouth if it encounters the larvae. If you have a pine tree at home, and can clearly see the cocoons on its branches, contact a pestcontrol company, who will help in you get rid of the larvae. Race night Food handout to needy rewards The Coin Branch of the Royal British Legion held its annual Race Night on a particularly chilly and damp evening last Saturday.
Happily, around 60 racegoers were given an extremely warm welcome by the staff of The Olive Tree who hosted the event in aid of the Poppy Appeal.
Good quiz for SEARCH charity What a close run quiz it was on Friday evening at The Olive Tree, and everyone really enjoyed the night. The scores were neck and neck so a further nine questions had to be answered – and even then there was only one point in it! Everyone there will forever remember which film Arnie first said: “Hasta La Vista” (it was Terminator II). Pictured above is the winning team, Abi’s Army. These quizzes are run by Sue and Alan from the equine rescue charity S.E.A.R.C.H. who say: “Due to the amount of

horses being abandoned or unnecessarily slaughtered/ put down (if they are lucky and not starved to death) and due to our current limitations on how many horses we can take in, we are looking for 'horse fosterers'. People who could take in and care for, on a tempory basis, horses who urgently need rescuing. S.E.A.R.C.H. would pay for the upkeep of the horse. Anyone who could possibly help please call Sue on 660 220 700 or email: info@serch.es Thank you.” And, of course, everyone is looking forward to the next exciting quiz at The Olive Tree.
Social Committee Chairman, Pam Cross, received a huge round of applause when she made a guest appearance after undergoing open-heart surgery just two weeks ago. Everyone wished her a speedy recovery and looked forward to her swift return to active duty. The evening followed the usual format with eight races sponsored by local businesses including Spanbox and One Stop Shop, among others. After the first two races, the ravenous crowd was fed a choice of chilli and rice or cottage pie and the exceptionally hungry enjoyed both.

The Chairman of the branch, Jo Taylor, offered a warm vote of thanks to an extremely generous David Kennedy who provided muchappreciated leadership throughout the auction phases of each race.
The horses in each race were sold to raise extra money and provide a winning dividend for the owner. Several of the auctions were hilariously contested and serendipity played a big part in The Olive Tree’s success in winning the auction of Stuffed Olive for the second race and then cheering the horse to victory at a rewarding 7:1. This was the first time the RBL had held a Race Night at The Olive Tree and Chairman Jo Taylor was delighted to announce that the event raised €707 for the Poppy Appeal that will go towards helping those in need of help from the Royal British Legion here on the Costa del Sol. As mentioned last week, every penny raised here for the Poppy appeal stays here in Spain.

Puppy
This is Puppy. Puppy hasn’t been given a proper name yet as the person who gives Puppy a permanent home will probably want to chose one themselves. She turned up five weeks ago at fish and chips restaurant, Marlow’s in Duquesa and hasn’t left since. She loves people and is at her happiest when being made a fuss of.
She is about six months old and highly intelligent. She’s very well behaved and is great with other animals, kids and people. Puppy loves the car and is small – like a long legged fox terrier type – and loves to play. Andalucian gardens Easter Week holidays The Andalucian Garden Group’s talk last month on Basic Garden Design was given by one of their members, Helen McGinty and everyone found it really interesting with many good ideas for gardens large and small, new and established. Thanks to Helena!
This month they have a speaker from the UK. Dr Keith Ferguson was the Deputy Keeper of the Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and Head of the Pollen Unit. He is now retired and travels widely speaking to garden groups
and others. His subject is “Pollen”.
Pollen plays a major role in our lives not only in crop pollination, honey and hay fever but also in oil exploration, climatic change and in many other areas. Considering the world-wide concern over the reducing number of bees, this will be a great opportunity for us to understand how we can help in our gardens. Afterwards there will be a short member’s Question and Answer time, when you can get help and hints from some
of the more experienced gardeners in the Club. They also have a very extensive library and members can borrow books each month. Visitors are always very welcome – if you want to just come for a particular talk, the fee for one meeting is €5.
If you would like to know more, just phone Eileen (952 455 213) or Chris (952 411 402). The Club meets on the second Tuesday of the month in Bar La Penita, (behind the BP Garage), Calle Gerald Brennan in Alhaurin el Grande – 5.30 pm for a 6 o’clock start.
The Easter holidays this week will mean that banks, businesses and many shops will be closed on Thursday and Friday but, unlike in the UK, open again on Monday.
Saturday is not a public holiday but some establishments will close anyway. The Thursday holiday known as Maundy Thursday or Holy

WALKER’S WILDSIDE Before giving your grassy areas a good cut this Spring give a thought to the butterfly food plants, because as I was prowling in the campo garden recently I came across the beauty below clinging to a stalk of fennel.
As long and as fat as a man’s finger, this was the caterpillar of the Swallowtail – the same species that is occasionally seen in the Norfolk Broads. This butterfly (above right) is not to be

confused with the Scarce Swallowtail which is paler and has longer tails. The following day the caterpillar started to “bunch up” indicating that it was at its maximum size and about to turn into a chrysalis. Sure enough the next day the caterpillar was replaced by a chunky, golden brown chrysalis.
Every day I checked on the chrysalis and to my consternation on the third day the chrysalis had turned into a husk and was full of parasitic wasps. Nevertheless a good reason to set aside some fennel in the garden and hope others are luckier.
Habitat: open ground with plenty of flowers. Foodplant: Fennel, wild carrot and other umbellifers. On the wing: June to September. Currently the butterfly season is hotting up, with Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Clouded Yellow, Brimstone and Spanish Festoon all on the wing. Best sighting this month – a badger crossing the Coin/Alhaurin road.

Pre-Raphaelite art in Malaga Recently acquired by the Museo de Vidrio y Cristal is a stunning stained glass window which depicts Jesus with small children and illustrates the biblical text “Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the Kingdom of God”. Measuring some four metres by eight centimetres (detail right, photograph by Isidoro Coloma) the window originally came from Trinity Church, Salcoats, Ayrshire and now has pride of place in this small gem of a museum in Malaga – a long way from its native Scotland. The glass, striking for its jewel-
like colours was designed by Edward Burne-Jones in 1891 and made by William Morris in 1905. Both men were, of course, central members of the Arts and Crafts movement in England known as the Pre-Raphaelites. The two friends collaborated on a variety of projects and other stained glass windows can still be seen in UK churches – have a look at the website http://www.stainedglass photography.com to see other examples of their work. The glass museum in Malaga is a private collection owned by Director Gonzalo
Fernandez-Prieto and is a treasure trove not only for lovers of glass but also for anyone interested in fine arts in general. There are around 3,000 pieces of glass on display with examples ranging from Roman and Phoenician times to the present century. The collection is housed in a beautifully restored 18th century Posada or lodging house, with internal patios and gardens, furnished like a private house with the glass on show in antique cabinets and on antique tables while paintings, rugs, mirrors and ornaments complete the ambiance. Visitors are

The latest Hollywood blockbuster to mine the good old fairy tale is a lively romp with an engaging cast who are clearly having great fun. We have a handsome hero, a feisty princess, and a black-hearted panto baddie to hiss at (a fabulous turn from an unrecognisable Stanley Tucci) and great battles – so what’s not to love?
Oscar winning director Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men) has reshaped the story and to
make sure we keep up the new plot is explained at the opening of the movie as a young boy in his humble hovel, and the young princess in her castle are told the fantastical story as a bedtime treat. Fast forward 10 years or so and young Jack has traded in the family horse for a bag of beans while brave young princess Isabelle has fled the palace to avoid marriage to her father’s loathsome adviser Roderick. Their destinies collide as Isabelle finds herself taking refuge in
Jack’s hovel during a storm, the beans get accidentally watered and grow into a giant beanstalk, taking the hovel and Isabelle with it just as her father the King, Roderick, and courageous Captain of the Guard Elmont arrive on the scene. All climb the beanstalk on the quest to rescue Isabelle and discover an island in the sky populated not just by one giant, but a whole race of them. A gateway to earth has now been opened and the fearsome giants
led by their leader (sensor captured and voiced by Nighy)– are no longer just the stuff of legend and are now determined to seize the opportunity to reclaim the land that was once theirs.
Jack and his fellow men face the adventure of a lifetime and Jack has the chance to become a legend himself but – Fe Fi Fo Fum –will it all end happily? Singer has crafted a fastpaced and energetic movie so grab a bag of popcorn and buckle up.
DVD NEW RELEASE
Lincoln
Release date: March 27th 2013
Directed by Steven Spielberg Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, Sally Field In 1865, as the American Civil War winds inexorably towards its conclusion, U.S. president Abraham Lincoln endeavors to achieve passage through Congress of the landmark constitutional amendment which will forever ban slavery from the United States.
However, his task is a race against time, for peace may come at any time, and if it comes before the amendment is passed, the returning southern states will stop it before it can become law.
Lincoln must, by almost any means
possible, obtain enough votes from a recalcitrant Congress before peace arrives and it is too late.
Yet the president is torn, as an early peace would save thousands of lives. As the nation confronts its conscience over the freedom of its entire population,
Lincoln faces his own crisis of conscience – end slavery or end the war.

Of the two, John has the longest screen time in the film, and so we follow his journey from befuddlement at his sudden insertion into this ongoing social situation, through to his growing attachment to his double's wife, brother, mother, sister in law, and precocious daughter that enables him to begin to right wrongs with all concerned.
T
he actual differences between the two men are very slight, mostly told through patterns of behaviour and the clothes
they wear, but Rhys is able to communicate them both well – despite the removal of mechanisms from the book that enable us to tell them apart, such as nationality and a burnt hand, we're never in any doubt which man we're listening to at any time, and that is a testament to Rhys's skill as an actor.
I
t becomes apparent fairly quickly that Johnny has wrecked his family and made a complete hash of the foundry business that built their fortune; his inability to negotiate a badly needed contract sealed his determination to flee from his life. The ending differs completely from the novel, but let’s not hold that against it. The art direction of this film is superb, the costumes are splendid, it all looks luscious, and the improbable tale is strangely gripping.
I
am not going to compare this version with the 1959 adaptation, which is more faithful to the book, but was said to be not one of Alec Guinesses best perfomances. In the original the atmosphere is somewhat depressing, given the gargantuan, ugly home the family resides in, unlike the beautiful location that the new one was filmed at Knebworth House.
B
oth these films are very good, they are just both different, the original seems to have followed the book and the re-make has made it its own, while keeping the dark mysteriousness of Du Maurier.

There is a need to rethink some of your approaches to your finances this week, there is a clear path to long term prosperity and abundance but you need to somehow attune your consciousness with it. Something in your life feels far from ready and complete. There are still issues that need to be cleared up and this is all going on behind the scenes – so there is more going on in your life than initially meets the eye. You have a few decisions and priorities to attend to. There has never been a better time than now to think outside the box and embrace the unthinkable, the absurd even – give it a bit of time and eventually it will make sense. You can hold on to worn-out ideas, answers and solutions too, but the universe needs you to be a unique and free thinker. There is a sense of urgency right now and time really is of the essence. Someone is ready to help you outsmart a situation so do not be worried about asking as this could put you ahead of the game. Focus – Cancer that is all you have to do. You may have to go through some sort of chaos or turmoil in order to reach stability. Floods of feelings and emotions are likely to be unleashed. As the week progresses you will start to see a bright stream of light, shine down from behind the dark clouds. You will be attracting things that feel good and it feels so much easier right now to get on with things, this week you will not need to force a thing, it will all just happen if it is meant to. More life and love will enter your abode. You are shining like a beacon of light for others to follow. The week ahead has the potential to completely re-define your life. All this attention and natural publicity coming your way will soon see your popularity soaring.

Everything that was turned upside down can stand right side up and this will deepen your urge to stay true to a course. A breakthrough that brings a rush of excitement and relief is on its way, however tempting it is to lay back and relax in your comfort zone, do not get too complacent as you need to be ready and adaptable for changes.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
The custom of eating lamb at Easter comes from the Bible story of the Passover – first celebrated by the Israelites in Egypt – which gave birth to the tradition of eating paschal lamb in the Mediterranean countries, from where the custom has been adopted by Swedes.
Lammstek – Swedish Roast Leg Of Lamb ( Serves 4)
Ingredients: • • • • • •
5 lb leg of lamb 60ml olive oil 2-3 cloves garlic 1 tsp. salt black pepper Pieces of rosemary stems
• little whole milk • or soy sauce
For the Gravy • the juices from the roast • 1 tbsp. flour
Directions Heat the oven to: 350° F
thermometer reaches 145° F for rare, 160° F for medium or 170° F for well done.
Combine the olive oil, salt, black pepper and pressed garlic in a small bowl. Finely snip the rosemary into the bowl. Butter an ovenproof roasting pan. Trim off any excess fat from the lamb and place in buttered roasting pan. Rub the olive oil mixture on the lamb on all sides. Wrap the lamb with aluminum foil and insert a meat thermometer in the centre of the leg. Make sure it doesn’t touch the bone. Roast in the oven until the meat
To make the gravy: Drain off the pan juices from the roast into a saucepan. Whisk in the flour to create a gravy; and heat up the gravy that is formed. Add milk and salt or soy sauce according to taste. Glad Påsk!! Happy Easter!!
A Swedish Easter As in many Scandinavian countries, Easter in Sweden is these days almost devoid of its religious connotations and is mostly looked upon as an occasion for festivity. Some people do attend church prayers and services, however, most of them look forward to the long Easter weekend as an opportunity for a family reunion or a holiday on the beach. As this is one of the best times to go on holiday, trips, fun-filled picnics and parties mark its arrival and the entire Easter week is generally celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. Despite being less observed in its traditional religious sense, Easter here can be marked by certain regional rituals and secular traditions. Influenced by other Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Påskkärringar or Easter witches have become a unique Eastertide tradition in Sweden. Children dressed up as Easter witches with long skirts, colourful headscarves and painted red cheeks, go from house
to house in the neighbourhood and present the occupants with paintings and drawings in the hope of getting sweets in return. Their origins are to be found in the old superstition that Maundy Thursday was the time when witches stole household brooms and flew off to dance and consort with the devil at a feast hosted by him on “Blue Mountain”, – a fictitious location, possibly in presentday Iceland. There were witch hunts that developed from this superstition and as late as in the 18th century, women denounced as witches could still face capital punishment. The last trial of a woman for witchcraft in Sweden took place as late as in 1720.

Speedy Gonzalez – in fact no-one can keep up with you; you are so fast this week. Your mind is like a flash of lightening transmitting ideas at the rate of knots, so whatever you need to see happen and move forward, then there is enough fire in you to push it so that it takes off like a rocket. You are a trigger for acceleration and you have the potential to reach great heights. Use this time to create something you can call your own – have fun.
The traditional Swedish Easter brunch consists of different varieties of pickled herring, cured salmon and Jansson's Temptation (potato, onion and pickled sprats baked in cream). The table is often laid like a traditional smörgåsbord. Spiced schnapps is also a feature of the Easter table. At dinner, people eat roast lamb with potatoes au gratin and asparagus or some other suitable side dish.
Something is definitely not working and you have to fix it, you have been bouncing back and forth lately and when the energy gets rough it is natural to freeze and want to prepare for the worst. However, the real negativity or trigger is in the past and you now have more ease and freedom to investigate options. Once it was your safety and security that were at risk – but now listen to your dreams, even the impossible ones, as they hold a glimmer of truth in them.
Decorated birch twigs are a common sight in Swedish homes during Easter. As a reminder of Christ's suffering, young people would lash each other with silver birch twigs
Being honest with yourself and others regarding your true motivations and intentions are important this week. It may surprise you then to find that others are looking for the same experiences and outcomes in their own lives. Remain focused on what you are doing and pay extremely close attention to the details, mistakes can take twice as long to rectify. A close relationship may need a heart to heart to work things out.
Paskris twigs
Two delightful Easter hags image by Familjen Benesch
on the morning of Good Friday. These silver birch branches, decorated with brightly coloured feathers, were the originator of both the Lent and Easter decorated branches. This is one of the Easter rituals exclusive to Sweden. Like the celebrations in other countries, Easter celebrations in Sweden are also marked by Easter eggs. The Easter egg here has a long history. It is said that these coloured eggs were obtained near graves from B.C. in Gotland. As they were painted in red and yellow, they were thought to represent the sunrise and sunset. Even today the people of Sweden, like other Europeans, paint their eggs at Easter and they are considered to be very lucky. In Sweden they have many names for the days of Easter week also known as Holy week. In Swedish these are: Black Monday, White Tuesday, Damper Wednesday, Cleansing Thursday, and Long Friday

TB needs 'visionary' A beautiful new you – and leadership at prices you can afford
Advertorial
Plans to tackle tuberculosis are failing and a new visionary approach is needed, according to an international group of doctors and scientists who say a rise in "virtually untreatable" tuberculosis poses a threat to countries around the world – and not just poorer countries either. They pointed out that it is a growing problem in London and a huge problem in Europe – "it's in our backyard at the moment."
Writing in the Lancet medical journal, the group said governments were "complacent" and "neglectful" and called for more action to tackle the
problem. According to the World Health Organization, nearly nine million people become sick and 1.4 million die from tuberculosis each year. In some countries there are problems with drug resistance, with many first-choice antibiotics no longer working against some strains of the tuberculosis bacterium. This is particularly acute in some parts of eastern Europe and central Asia, where up to a third of cases can be multi-drug resistant, known as MDRTB. The number of laboratory-confirmed cases of MDR-TB around the world has gone from 12,000 in 2005 to 62,000 in 2011, but the real figure is
thought to be closer to 300,000. An even more stubborn version, resistant to more antibiotics, is called extensively drugresistant tuberculosis and has been detected in 84 countries.
The group argued that countries had spent decades being complacent in their response to the infection and that a "major conceptual change and visionary global leadership" were needed.
He said there had been a "shameful" lack of investment in tuberculosis treatment and research: "With global population movement, tuberculosis is in everyone's backyard."
Diabetics need not avoid fruit For most people, eating fruit goes along with a healthy diet. But for people with diabetes, it’s a different story. Because of a lack of research, and conflicting advice, diabetics have had no clear answers to two main doubts – should they eat little fruit or avoid it altogether because of its sugar content, or do the fibre and other nutrients it contains minimise its effect on blood sugar?
Now a new study provides some guidance. It found that restricting fruit intake did not seem to benefit diabetics. In the study, the first randomised trial to address the issue, researchers recruited 63 overweight men and women with newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes.
All the subjects were given medical care and nutrition advice, including suggestions to limit calories. But some were told to limit their fruit intake, while a second group was instructed to eat at least two pieces of fruit daily. The objective was to see how this affected their levels of glycosylated haemoglobin, which provides an indication of blood sugar level over time. The first group consumed about 135 grams of fruit a day, roughly equivalent to a single orange or banana, while the second group consumed about 320 grams of fruit daily.
but those who ate more fruit had the greatest reductions.
And there was no significant difference between the two groups when it came to their blood sugar measures. The researchers said: “Considering the many possible beneficial effects of fruit, we recommend that fruit intake should not be restricted in Type 2 diabetic subjects.” However, they said more research is needed.

He scared the living wits out of all who read his novels. James Herbert died peacefully at home.
Horror will never be the same again
… and it is a sad loss for all who enjoyed reading this man’s wonderfully vivid books
Best selling author James Herbert of Fluke, The Rats and The Fog fame, as well as 20 other books that sold 54 million copies worldwide, died last Wednesday at the age of 69. He had not been ill. His latest book, Ash, was published just this month. His first novel, The Rats told the tale of London being over-run by mutant flesh eating rodents. The book sold 100,000 copies within the first two weeks of being published in 1974 – one was sold to The News’ editor. The Rats was one of four Herbert novels made into films, along with The Survivor, Fluke and Haunted, while his book The Secret Of Crickley Hall was adapted for television and broadcast on BBC One last December. Tributes flowed in for this giant of an
author – who was rather small in stature and often dressed in his trademark black – including from crime writer Peter James who said he was "deeply saddened" to hear of Herbert's death. "Will miss you lots, Jim, you were a diamond. RIP," he wrote on Twitter and also from fellow crime writer Ian Rankin who said: "Sad news about James Herbert – as a teen, I scared myself silly reading him. He led me to King, Barker, others. RIP."
I for one agree. As a child I didn’t read books much except at school and was always being nagged to read more at home which was something I had no interest in. Until, that is, at the ripe old age of just 13 years old, an elderly lady I used to talk to at the bus stop in the mornings lent
me her copy of The Rats, closely followed by Fluke (the story of a murdered man who comes back in the shape of a black labrador to avenge his death).
Herbert’s books were certainly gripping stuff and I think I have every single one in my collection. From there I went on, as did Rankin, to read Stephen King and most of the other horror writers, closely followed by Rankin, James, Patterson, Reich and all the other crime writers and am now a constant reader of many different types of book. Herbert’s books opened up a whole new world for me and many others and his writing will be missed by all of us. written by Kym Wickham

Tropical or Are your nails killing you? jungle prints in Summer, believe it or not, really is just around the corner and now’s the time to sort out your wardrobe.
Back in for the season are tropical prints. Palm trees, green leaves, parrots and toucans and anything to do with the Carribean are in, in, in!
Dresses with boob tube tops and tie on shoulder straps will be popular but 40s and 50s styles with big skirts are also “in” as are leather thong sandals and jellies – remember those plastic sandals that came in all colours of the rainbow with fake flowers on them? Well, they’re jellies and, once you’ve got used to them they seem to mold to your feet and are incredibly comfortable.
Loose trousers in all manner of colours and prints will be cool and comfortable for the hot summer months, but make sure they are made of cotton, linen, silk or viscose so that the fabric can “breath” and look forward to a bright and colourful season.
Gel manicures have been slapped with new warnings that they could up your risk of skin cancer. A New York dermatologist has voiced serious concerns that women's addiction to the long-lasting, UV-dried manicure system could be threatening their health, not to mention their nails. In a piece for the American Academy of Dermatology Dr Chris Adigun has suggested that women should be more aware of the skin cancer risk and advises them to cover their hands in suncream before heading to
the beauty salon. So, should we be worried? Possibly. Unregulated salons and machinery mean that you could be exposed to high levels of UV light even though experts from the big gel manicure brands insist that their products contains no more UV than you would experience from standard strip lighting. Also, the stronger polish used needs to be soaked off with acetone for around 10 minutes, which is far longer than you'd usually need to remove nail varnish. "This can cause massive damage

Dr Stern recommends asking your nail technician to wrap your nails in acetonesoaked cotton rather than soaking them entirely when removing old manicure polish. Lisa Emeny P.A.D is in a crisis situation and this is an URGENT appeal for help. P.A.D (Protección de Animales Domesticos) is an animal shelter based in Mijas Costa dedicated to caring for and re-homing abandoned cats and dogs for the past 17 years. The shelter is currently home to 57 dogs and over 250 cats. Along with so many others, the charity is facing a severe financial crisis because demand for our services has grown whilst contributions have dropped dramatically. The charity’s source of income is entirely based on donations. Although notices posted at the shelter explain that no more animals can be accepted the staff find dogs and cats dumped on their doorstep daily. P.A.D currently has enough
Mijas Costa
funds to survive the next two months and after that, if we don’t find a way to get some money in, I don’t know what we will do. Although we are constantly fundraising our current income levels are not enough to sustain the expenditure involved in ensuring the animals in our shelter are cared for and, although it is heartbreaking to turn people away, we simply cannot continue to take in any more cats and dogs. We have to focus on the ones we already have. If anyone is able to offer any financial help please make a donation as soon as possible to : Bankinter: 0128 0796 13 0102677405 You can also donate via Pay Pal or take donations to the shelter.
Remember, these animals
Mike Brackenridge So the Malaga Airport taxi drivers are going on strike ... again. I for one am not too worried. Local taxis which only a couple of years ago were considered cheap are now actually quite expensive. I tended to try to pick my family up from the airport

Editor says: It is a sad fact that all the charities are struggling to make ends meet at this time and every penny you can spare makes a huge difference – sometimes to the point of whether the charity survives or not so please, give as much as you possibly can.

when I could and when I couldn't they used to get a taxi to Fuengirola. When they came over about a year or so ago I couldn't pick them up but there were problems with a taxi demonstration or strike at the airport ... so they got the train. Since then, I pick them up from Fuengirola train station. They discovered the train was a great
Mary Orr Oh when is the summer ever going to arrive here in Spain? Normally at this time of year we’d be wandering along the seafront soaking up the sun or reading a book on the sunloungers around the pool in the gardens. This year we’re all still bundled up in woolies, wellies and coats. Still, we should be grateful for small mercies. At least we aren’t five feet deep in snow, stuck in our cars on motorways for eight to twelve hours at a time, stuck in the

service and very cheap and now never get a taxi down or up to the airport. The taxi drivers are their own worst enemies, just like Iberia employees, airport luggage handlers etc., etc., etc. Shame people here won't use their heads a little more and maybe they might actually help get this country moving forwards rather than backwards.
Coin train because they can’t move either, or even stuck at the airport waiting to come over from the UK to get a taste of the sun before going back to face the rest of the year in grey old Britain. What really amazes me is all the people that say: “I want to go back home. It’s so much better there!” All I can say to those poor deluded souls is: “Have a look at BBC or Sky News and see the lack of sunlight, the lack of any colour anywhere, the journalists hiding under brollies, and the people stuck in cars. Think again!
Regular readers will know that I don’t think that many of the constellations look anything like what they are meant to represent.
A
ries is nothing more than four stars forming a slightly crooked line and looks nothing like a ram. Virgo is a sprawling mass of stars with no real defined shape while Libra is just two fairly indistinct stars. And as for Aquarius, well even after several glasses I still can’t make out what it’s meant to be!
B
ut there are one or two constellations that are quite impressive and even with the slightest of imagination it is easy to see where the ancient Greeks, Romans and Babylonians got their inspiration from. Once it’s been pointed out, then I suppose Taurus could be described as the two horns of a bull charging down upon Orion. And I guess you could say that Gemini has a certain twin-ness quality to it. But for me the two constellations that really do resemble their namesakes are Scorpio and Leo.
S
corpio is visible during the summer months and whenever I have been at a star party and pointed it out to people there is an audible gasp as people agree that it really does look like a scorpion climbing up the sky.
L
eo the lion is also a good look-a-like and at this time of the year he can be seen proudly dominating the early evening eastern sky. Once you’ve spotted him I think you’ll agree that he does look a bit like one of the lions in Trafalgar Square. His distinctive shape is easily recognisable amongst the other stars.
A
ccording to Greek mythology Leo was the lion killed by Hercules during one of his twelve labours. He strangled the lion and then had it placed in the heavens for all to see.
S
o how to find Leo. Go outside after about 8.00pm on a clear starry night and give your eyes 10-15 minutes to become dark adapted – be away from any street lights as they will block out the stars. Now turn to face an easterly direction, that is where the Sun usually rises. Try to spot The Plough or as the Americans call it ‘The Big Dipper’. To me it always looks like a giant saucepan with three stars forming the ‘handle’ and another four stars forming the crooked square of the ‘bowl’. At this time of the year The Plough is standing up on its ‘handle’ with the ‘bowl’ at the top.
T
he two uppermost stars of The Plough are called The Pointers and if you follow them in a straight line to the left then they point to the North Star. But if you follow the line of The Pointers this time to the right you will find a fairly bright star called Regulus. Regulus is the key star in Leo and marks the position of the lion’s chest. Presently Leo is pointing upwards in the sky so try to find the six stars that form a ‘reversed question mark’ or sickle shape beginning with Regulus. This sickle shape forms the head of the lion facing upwards; the rest of his body is below the sickle and forms a triangle finishing in a point at his tail with a star called Denebola which literally means the lion’s tail.
T
here are lots of interesting stars and deep space objects located around Leo that can be seen with binoculars or a small telescope. Regulus is not a single star but is a group of four stars made up of two separate pairs about 77 light years away that orbit around each other. Regulus itself is about four times bigger than the Sun but it spins very quickly causing it to be almost egg shaped while its companion star is an extinct white dwarf star.
A
nother star in Leo is called Wolf 359 and is the third closest star to the Sun at just over seven light years away. Despite its proximity to the Sun, Wolf 359 can only be seen through a large telescope. It is one of the lowest-mass and faintest stars ever discovered.
O
n the night of November 16th a spectacular meteor shower known as the Leonids appear to stream from the mouth of Leo. In some years the shower has turned into a meteor storm – giving rise to the roar of the lion.
S H
o for people born between July 23rd and August 22nd why not nip outside and spot your lion? appy Stargazing!

Vettel would rather win Miraflores presentation dinner points than friends Like his idol before him Michael Schumacher, Sebastien Vettel would not be triple world champion if he didn’t push it to the limit. There is no doubting his talent but to say he is irksome would be an understatement. Once again he defied all team orders to overtake his team-mate Mark Webber who had driven superbly throughout the race. And after being told by the team to conserve fuel and protect the tyres, Vettel proceeded to hound Webber down. He had already commented over the team radio at the mid race point, “We have to get Mark out of the way – he’s too slow.” Now, I am in the no team orders camp, so yes, to see team mates battling it out on the race track is the type of racing I would prefer but, if they are going to have team orders then both drivers have to stick to the rules. It does Vettel no favours in the long run except garner him some extra points. I wonder what will happen later on in the season if Vettel is leading the championship and Mark Webber is asked to
The after race press conference wasn’t a happy place
move over and let Vettel through but refuses ... how the petulant German would react then, time I am sure will tell. Later, after having had time to think things through, Mark Webber hinted that he could consider his future in the sport in the wake of Sunday’s Grand Prix. “I think it's very early days right now, it's very raw, obviously, and we need to work out how the team goes best forwards from here. That's obviously going to be discussed this week. I will be in Australia on my surfboard, the phone won't be engaged. We will see what happens,” he added. There was friction too in the Mercedes camp, with
Nico Rosberg trying for all he was worth to try and persuade the team to let him pass Lewis Hamilton. Lewis admitted in the post race interview that it should have been Nico on the podium, but again team orders demanded that they hold position and conserve fuel and tyres. All that said it was still a thrilling race, but the loss of Fernando Alonso on the first lap took away another element that would have made it even more exciting. There was a lighter moment during the race when Lewis Hamilton entered the McLaren pit by mistake, and with much waving of arms eventually found the right team. By Mike Kerrigan
Miraflores Bowls Club presentation dinner was held this year at the La Siesta Golf Restaurant on Calahonda for the first time. The restaurant had agreed to close its doors for the night so that we had exclusive use of the facilities. The event has traditionally been the opportunity for members and guests to put on their best "bib and tucker" but without the usual accompaniment of endless speeches! The event started with a drinks reception on
arrival followed by an excellent dinner prepared by Paco and his team. We were fortunate to have Jo Layte to entertain us again with a mixture of music to meet all tastes and guaranteed to get all on to the dance floor.
There was a short break in the entertainment for the trophies to be awarded together with a bottle of wine for Graham Rowley in recognition of his efforts as league captain and flowers and wine for Derek and Pam Shemmings in appreciation of all they do

US tycoon Preston Haskell IV eyeing takeover bid
Coventry City are being lined up for a takeover bid from a United States-based property tycoon, who has also agreed to buy a share of their Ricoh Arena home. Preston Haskell IV wants control of the promotion-chasing League One club and to install suspended Sky Blues life president Joe Elliott as chairman."He's very keen and the other people in his team are very keen," Elliott told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire."This is something I believe would be beneficial to the city of Coventry."

Prior earns England a draw
England's last-wicket pair held on to secure a stunning draw in a thrilling third Test against New Zealand. Matt Prior made a magnificent unbeaten 110 and Monty Panesar faced five balls at the death to deny the hosts a series victory at Eden Park in Auckland. Prior and Stuart Broad defended stoutly after coming together at 237-7 at tea, but Broad and James Anderson fell in the fourth over before the close.

However, Prior and Panesar clinched the draw with England on 315-9 at the end. Prior, who successfully overturned an lbw decision and survived the ball hitting his stumps earlier in his innings, faced 182 balls and batted for four hours and 29 minutes. It was the 31-year-old vice-captain's seventh Test century and the longest innings of his 65-Test career.
