Wettest March on record www.thenewsonline.es

FIRST with the news every week - FREE / Gratis

Wednesday, April 3rd 2013 Issue 220

Figures issued by the Meteorological Office (AEMET) at the end of March show that it was the wettest March since records began in 1947, with an average of more than 150 litres per square metre registered across the country.

This represents 50 per cent more rainfall than usual in the Ebro Valley, the Basque Country, nearly all of Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha and Badajoz. The Ebro River has flooded its banks in many areas in the north of the country, especially in Navarre, while the Duero is keeping the region of Castilla-Leon on orange alert. And while the rains have eased off slightly, the higher temperatures will bring more water down from the mountains all over Spain in coming days, especially in the northern areas lying at the foot of the Pyrenees.

An AEMET spokesman said on Tuesday that it began to rain in midJanuary and since then there has been more rain than normal. He said that since the beginning of the so-called hydrological year (October 1st 2012 to September 30th, 2013) 531 litres per square metre have fallen in many areas across Spain, which is 38 per cent above normal. As a result, reservoirs across the country have reached record levels of more than 90 per cent of their full capacity, banishing the threat of drought for at

least the next two years.

In Andalucia, some 20 reservoirs in the provinces of Jaen, Cordoba and Sevilla are 100 per cent full, while the Guadalquivir River continues to overflow its banks, flooding the lowlying areas of towns in Cordoba and Jaen provinces. Residents of higher levels have been warned that if the river continues to rise, they should prepare themselves for evacuation.

The weather forecasts indicate an easing off of the rains in most parts of Andalucia but not in the northern half of the country, where the

situation will remain critical for the next week at least. Rain in Soria

WORLD ICKHAM’S

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

If you read my column last week you may be wondering if I went to the ball in my gown or a bin bag. Well, despite it being Easter and with all that lovely chocolate around, I managed to get into my frock and had a great time at the RAFA Easter Ball at the Tamisa Golf Hotel last Saturday night. There was an Easter bonnet contest and some of the ladies had made a terrific effort with their bonnets (not forgetting, of course, the one gent who came with an Australian Akubra hat complete with hanging corks topped with mini-Cadbury’s Easter eggs that didn’t quite make being on the hat until the end of the evening!). My favourite was a huge rabbit face made out of cotton wool with dramatic false eyelashes, bunny teeth and pink ears, all topped off with a nest of ceramic eggs, fluttering butterflies and bees ... fabulous. However, for some reason best known to the judges, my bonnet won and I was given an Easter egg for my prize. The bonnet had a

yellow children’s tutu on the brim to look like a daffodil with spring flowers and Easter bunnies around the crown and, on top, a nest and grass with those little yellow chickens we all used to get at Eastertime as kids and were they ever difficult to find here! Luckily, Cynthia at Papeleria Martin in Alhaurin el Grande had six left and saved them for me. Ian Jacks did the energetic entertainment and we wined, dined and danced until 3am. Still, back to work, bright eyed and bushy tailed and not a rabbit or chicken in sight now. However, I do still have some Easter egg left!

In a secret meeting last week, Catalan regional premier Artur Mas came to Madrid for a meeting with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in an attempt to alleviate his region’s economic asphyxiation with a new model of financing. Mas called a snap election last November, hoping to win an “overwhelming majority” for independence and a way out of his economic troubles. Instead his party – the CiU – lost ten seats and he had to make a pact with the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) to be able to form a government. To cut the region's huge deficit, Mas has had to make drastic cuts in public services, a situation not helped by ERC's insistence on setting

To escape the horns of the dilemma, it would appear that Mas is now prepared to make up his economic and political quarrels with Madrid, and sources have said Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy may be prepared to cut him some slack, admittedly with the object of driving a wedge between Mas and his proindependence partner. The head of the Partido Popular's Catalan branch, Alicia Sánchez-Camacho, has already called on Mas to break with ERC in exchange for Madrid easing spending control over the

Regional premier snapped Unemployment with drug trafficker drops slightly Premier Alberto Núñez Feijóo told a press conference at the Galicia parliament on Monday that photographs published by the El Pais newspaper showing him on the yacht of a convicted drug trafficker in the mid-1990s were "just old photographs”. Feijóo said he ended his friendship with Marcial Dorado, considered one of the kingpins of the Galicia smuggling mafia, when he found out he was being investigated.

Marcial Dorado is currently serving a 14year jail term for drug-related offences. Núñez Feijóo added: “If I had thought that these photographs would pose a risk to my career, I would never have stood in the regional elections.” He said there was nothing behind the photos, "neither contracts with the

Xunta nor Insalud [the Galicia Health Service of which he was president when the photos were taken] nor PP party financing because at that time I was not a member of the Partido Popular.”

Feijóo also alluded to a shadowy figure who he claimed had been threatening to bring his friendship with Dorado to light to scupper his political ambitions ever since he was named deputy regional premier in 2003. He said: “They have tried to intimidate me all this time and they have not succeeded. I will continue to speak my mind.” Núñez Feijóo said that when he knew Dorado, he did not know what he did for a living, despite the trafficker’s previous arrests in 1983 and 1990 for smuggling tobacco. “I investigated but

I was told he hadn’t been convicted," he said. "I made the mistake of not investigating further with my own resources.” Abel Losada, spokesman for the Socialist Party in the regional assembly, said on Sunday: “The only person in Galicia who didn’t know in 1995 that Dorado was a smuggler was Feijóo.” Regional Socialist leader Pachi Vázquez called for Núñez Feijóo to resign because of his “stable relationship with a person classified as a drug trafficker”.

Thanks to the number of workers taken on the recreational and tourism-related sectors during Easter week, the number of jobless for March dropped by 4,979, bringing the total number to 5,035,243.

Priest expelled over Former ETA leader dies in Paris hospital sex abuse claims The Spanish Catholic Church has expelled a priest accused of paedophilia. Pere Barceló, a 60-year-old priest from Can Picafort in Mallorca, has been accused by three women of sexually abusing them when they were children in the 1990s, and faces up to 18 years in jail if found guilty.

It is the first time the Spanish Catholic Church has expelled a priest over sex abuse allegations. The Bishop of Mallorca, Javier Salinas, said that an internal investigation had found Barceló guilty of violating the sixth commandment – which forbids adultery – with minors, and he had been expelled from the priesthood as "the maximum punishment".

Barceló had been suspected of abuse in the late 1990s, but the Church allegedly hushed up a complaint against him. In June 1998, Mateu

Ferrer, a young boy undergoing catechism, reported him, saying that he had seen him abusing a young girl in the church at Can Picafort. The case was not followed up, and Ferrer was reprimanded by the local Church authorities. Barceló was finally removed by Salinas' predecessor in 2011, when a woman reported him to the bishop's office for allegedly abusing her when she was a child. Two other women also came forward and reported Barceló. One of them said she had been repeatedly abused and raped by him in 1997 and

1998, when she was 10 and 11 years old. Pope Benedict XVI ordered the Church in 2005 to investigate all signs of paedophilia, and the Bishop of Mallorca launched an investigation in 2011. Over the last decade only a handful of confirmed sex abuse cases involving Spanish clergy have been brought to the Vatican's attention. In late 2010, the first abuse charges to become public in Spain involved a Carmelite monk in Valencia, and Franciscan priests who ran a care home in Córdoba.

Xabier López Peña, known as “Thierry,” died of a brain haemorrhage overnight last Saturday in a hospital in Paris where he was on trial along with nine high-ranking members of the Basque terrorist group ETA for the kidnapping of a Spanish family in France in 2007. He was 54. His death immediately led to calls from the left-wing Basque nationalist group known as the abertzale for talks about the fate of sick ETA prisoners in Spanish jails. Among those on the stand with López Peña in Paris is Garikoitz Aspiazu, alias “Txeroki,” with whom he battled for control of ETA. The abertzale feared the internal fighting would be the end of ETA but the struggle ended when Thierry was arrested in Bordeaux in 2008. The interior minister at the time, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, described López Peña as the “person with the greatest political and military influence in the organisation”. López Peña had represented

ETA during talks with the Spanish government than began in 2004 that led to the group’s ceasefire announcement in March 2006. The negotiations with the Socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, which began in earnest in the summer of 2006, were held in Oslo. When they stalled early in December that year, Thierry told the government’s representative: “We can attack wherever we want

and however we want. If the peace process is broken, this will be like Vietnam. We will respond to detentions with an attack in Spain.”

Nineteen days later ETA bombed the new T-4 terminal at Barajas airport in Madrid, killing two people, and forcing Zapatero to break off the peace process. López Peña was arrested two years later in France and expelled from the organisation three months afterwards.

National Police take Twitter On February 25th, the National Police message on Twitter – "You're a hipster or from another urban tribe or trend and you say so online. But don't display all your private life. Privacy comes before being trend" – turned into a Twitter phenomenon.

The message generated over 7,300 retweets, 1,600 favourites and hundreds of responses. In Spain, with more than five million Twitter users, 300 retweets is considered a success. Now @policía has become the most-followed Spanish institution and the second law enforcement agency in the world, behind the FBI. The idea was born in 2009 as a way to use new communication tools to

diffuse prevention campaigns, publish police success stories and seek the cooperation of the public at large. A dozen officers, all aged around 25 with degrees in journalism, psychology or sociology, manage the account. Its director, Carlos Fernández Guerra, 39, told El Pais newspaper: "We're not the Official State Bulletin or a shop window for the director general You can't sound officious: Twitter is cruel and you can be rejected for the smallest thing. “The objective is to reach the citizen who uses the web and provide a service. In this case, warning about the danger of publishing personal details. We use the language of our followers.

We imitate them, we learn from them; we are a living account."

@policía doesn't only publish advice and warnings, but also serious content dealing with cyber bullying, fraud, gender violence, bullying at school or drug abuse. It also responds to followers. In private messages people can make a police complaint or ask a question and be referred to the relevant department. Inspector Carolina González said thousands of messages with clues are received through the account. One message resulted in the arrest of nine Dominicans carrying 277 kilos of cocaine hidden between cattle skins in a truck.

Villages for sale the

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

“Village for sale. Six buildings with magnificent views, spring water and a 13,000 square metre finca, Pontenova area. Bargain at €62,000. " This and a similar ad for a rural settlement near Lugo were published on the Aldeas Abandonadas.com (Abandoned Villages) website, the most active in this business sector. According to its manager Rafael Canales, there are 3,000 abandoned villages across the country, many of them like these two advertised in the region of Galicia. His website currently has 60, and other websites like Trovit have similar offers.

However, selling a village can be difficult. Jose Balseiros, the mayor of Cerdedo in Pintevedra province, told the ABC newspaper, he was negotiating the sale of the village of Fraguas for a German family but so far it had not been possible to contact all the owners of the houses there, most of which were in ruins. The mayor of Cotobade, Jorge Cubela, told the newspaper he had discovered a "jewel" – the

village of Arufe, which has five houses. He said he had managed to locate all the owners and the plan was to restore it in the hope that the descendents of the families which had left it more than 60 years ago will return to live there.

The problem in contacting that owners is that many emigrated to South America and are now difficult to trace. Others have died and their descendants are living in cities and have lost touch with rural Galicia. Failing that, Cubela said there were plans to turn it into rural tourism complex, adding that he had already received phone calls from outsiders interested in buying it. Cubela added that the regional government was interested in restoring the villages in an attempt to stop people from deserting rural areas – a problem that goes back decades in the region.

He said until recently half of the people interested in buying the villages were Spanish but now the majority are foreigners, mainly Germans or Britons. He recently sold a village in the Eo Valley to an English couple for €125,000. When it was posted on his website, Canales said he received inquiries from as far away as Bulgaria. He said the new owners planned to restore the houses and turn the village into a rural tourism complex.

Canales apparently receives between 300 and 400 requests for information a year. He is handling sales of villages in Catalonia and Asturias, as well as Galicia but the villages there were easier to sell. "What you can buy for €100,000 in Galicia would cost you €1 million elsewhere." For example, he is trying to sell a l50hectare village near Barcelona for €1,200,000. He said a similar sized village in Ribeira Sacra, Galicia, was going for €60,000.

Telefonica to pay back taxes Telefónica has reached an agreement with treasury officials to pay back some €135 million which tax inspectors determined that the telecoms giant owed after audits were taken covering the tax years from 2005 to 2007. Telefónica's running battle with the taxmen goes back to 1998.

Last year, the Supreme Court partially ruled in the company's favour in a long-running case Telefónica had filed against the Treasury over audits on revenue generated from 1998 to 2000. Another case before the High Court was resolved last december in favour of Telefónica over tax disputes from revenue coming from its overseas affiliates. The company said there are other areas that are still in dispute, but it hasn't received documents pertaining to them from the Treasury. mAdrid

UNITED STATES

Just over 6,000 people died in Syria in March, the deadliest month since protests against the government began two years ago, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based activist group.

The anti-government group, which monitors human rights violations on both sides of the conflict via a network of contacts across Syria, said the total toll was much higher than

the 62,554 deaths it has documented. A spokesman said: "We estimate it is actually around 120,000 people. Many death tolls are more difficult to document so we are not officially including them yet." The UN has said more than 70,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began. The movement of foreign media and independent human rights organisations has been

severely curtailed within the country, making the verification of casualty figures almost impossible. As the fighting drags on, the UK, France and the US are getting closer to supporting the rebels with weapons and military training. The UK estimates that Mr Assad's main allies Iran and Russia have increased their levels of military and financial support to the regime

since late last year, giving Assad's men a sharper military edge over the armed opposition – one of the reasons why Britain and France are pressing their European Union partners to lift their arms embargo to Syria.

Diplomatic sources have said they want to change the military culture in rebel groups, to produce fighters who respect the laws of war and human rights.

Cinema killer 'should UN General Assembly votes on arms treaty be executed' Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty for the man accused of killing 12 people last July at a cinema in the US state of Colorado. Last Friday, prosecutors rejected an offer from James Holmes to plead guilty in order to avoid execution.

The 25-year-old is charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder in the attack in Aurora, one of the worst mass shootings in US history. Dozens were wounded in the attack at a midnight showing of a Batman film. Both prosecution and defence lawyers have agreed it will take longer

to bring Holmes' case to trial, now that he could face the death penalty. The trial had been scheduled for August; now a judge has pushed it back to February 2014.

Holmes' defence lawyers were expected to argue he is not guilty because he was legally insane at the time of the July 20th shooting but investigators say the former neuroscience graduate student had stockpiled weapons and ammunition ahead of the attacks. He allegedly also booby-trapped his flat to explode, in an apparent bid to distract police from responding to the cinema during the shooting.

A majority of the 193nation UN General Assembly voted in favour on Tuesday of what would be the first treaty to regulate the $70 billion (£46bn) global trade in conventional arms, a week after Iran, North Korea and Syria blocked the treaty's adoption by consensus. Supporters of the treaty said it is needed to keep weapons out of the hands of terrorists and organised crime. The treaty would prohibit states from exporting conventional weapons in violation of arms embargoes, or weapons that would be used for acts of genocide, crimes against humanity,

war crimes or terrorism.

It would also require states to prevent conventional weapons reaching the black market. Diplomats have worked for nearly a decade to agree on a set of principles to control the flow of such arms. The draft treaty will now have to be ratified by at least 50 members in order to come into force.

In the US, the biggest pro-gun lobby group, the National Rifle Association, has vowed to fight against ratification by the Senate, although the UN said the treaty does nothing to interfere with domestic firearms legislation.

Nuclear reactor to be reactivated

The government has said it will restart all facilities at its main Yongbyon nuclear complex, including a reactor mothballed in 2007, in order to bolster the country's nuclear forces "in quality and quantity". In recent weeks the communist state has issued a series of threats against both South korean and US targets, to which the US has responded with high-profile movements of advanced aircraft and warships around the korean peninsula. Apple apologises to customers

Apple boss Tim Cook has apologised to Chinese consumers after state media accused the firm of arrogance, greed and of "throwing its weight around". A two-week long Chinese media campaign had focused on Apple's repair policies. Apple said it would enhance communication with Chinese consumers and strengthen oversight of authorised resellers.

Earlier this year, Mr Cook said he expected China to replace North America as Apple's largest source of revenue. China is currently Apple's second-largest market, with more than 17,000 outlets selling its products. Apple is not the first foreign company to come under pressure from Chinese media. Last year, China Central Television featured McDonald's and Carrefour for food safety violations. The companies later apologised.

Benefits system to make work more attractive Britain’s benefits system is getting a major revamp by the Government which wants it to encourage people to work rather than remain jobless and reliant on state hand-outs.

empty bedrooms could mean over two million people paying an extra £138 a year in tax. And this is just the start.

Some church leaders are not happy with the changes, and fear that changes to council tax benefits in particular will hurt many poor families. But the Government is intent on cutting state spending and the tax on

a new Universal Credit System and a cap on household benefits.

Increases in other benefits have been capped to 1 per cent, so they will rise less than the rate of inflation, and a change from disability payments to personal independence allowances will start soon following widely publicised abuse of the old system.

Cabinet Ministers Chancellor George Osborne and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith said they were simply restoring the original principles of the welfare state. Those who can work must work, and a life on benefits must not be more attractive than working.

Mick Philpott and his wife Mairead have been found guilty of the manslaughter of their six children in a fire at their house in Derby. Their friend Paul Mosley was also convicted of manslaughter over the petrol-fuelled blaze that engulfed the semidetached house at Allenton, Derby in May last year. Mick Philpott stared straight ahead as the

guilty verdict was read out, but when his wife was convicted he shook his head as she looked down at the floor clasping a tissue in her hands. Mosley showed no emotion as he heard the guilty verdicts. And as he was led from the dock, Mick Philpott shouted: "Not over yet, mate!" Sentencing is due to take place for all three today, Wednesday at 10.30am.

New row over 500-year-old bones

King Richard III is at the centre of a new fight over the location of his final resting place, just weeks after the remains of the last English king to die in battle were found underneath a council car park. Archaeologists announced one of the most remarkable finds in recent English history last month when they confirmed the discovery of the body of Richard, who was slain at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, during excavations in Leicester. The city of Leicester has seen a vast increase in tourism since the find and are in a battle to keep the remains there, in St. Martin’s Cathedral whereas others claim the remains should be moved to York. An application for a judicial review is to be lodged.

Manchester United beat struggling Sunderland 1-0 to remain clear at the top of England’s Barclay’s Premier League and after the match it was announced that manager Martin O’Neill had lost his job.

His replacement is the colourful Paolo Di Canio, 44, a former striker with West Ham. He left League One Club Swindon in February and off the field has courted controversy for his political views. He has just seven games in which to turn around Sunderland’s fortunes and keep them in the top flight.

Cash machine Easter boating tragedy on In trouble Lake Windermere blown up theNews Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Thieves have been known to blow up cash machines on mainland Europe in the past but, in the early hours of Sunday morning, this same thing happened in a petrol station in Weyhill, Hampshire. A local resident called police saying that they had heard a loud bang and, when police arrived on the scene, they found the cash machine blown open on the forecourt and the money gone. The incident was caught on CCTV and police have issued a warning saying that if anyone notices anything suspicious, not to touch the machine and call police immediately.

"Although this was a relatively contained explosion and fortunately no one was injured, the unpredictable nature of this type of offence means we could easily have been dealing with serious injury or death," said Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Murray . "Our priority is to keep the public safe and by showing this CCTV

footage, we hope it highlights how potentially dangerous an explosion of this type can be. We are aware of crimes of this nature occurring in mainland Europe which have had serious consequences and our advice to anyone using a cashpoint is to be extremely vigilant of any suspicious activity nearby. If you notice anything unusual, or see any wires or cables running from the machine, do not attempt to touch it and call the police immediately." He said detectives were following up a number of enquiries and appealed for anyone with information that may assist the investigation to contact police.

A man is fighting for his life in the Royal Lancaster Infirmary following an incident on a boat on Lake Windermere in the Lake District which claimed the life of a 36-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl who had been airlifted from the jetty to the hospital but later died. It is suspected that they had succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning during their Easter boating holiday. The alarm was raised at about 4pm when Cumbria police and an ambulance were called to the private vessel that was near Bowness but, at first, they could not locate the boat. The woman and the girl were both treated at the scene prior to being airlifted to the hospital. It is understood they were

from the Leyland area.

Witness Josh Kynastontold reporters: "They were trying to find the problem boat. Once they had found it, all the medics were out, all the fire brigade, all the police and they were trying to get to them as soon as possible because they knew straight away what what up, that they knew there was a problem with some gas leakage. Straight away they were dragging them out to the jetty because they couldn't operate on them on the boat and then they were trying to sort them out as quickly as possible. The helicopter had to keep doing consecutive trips and they were immediately sending them off as quickly as possible because they knew

it was fatal." A Cumbria Police spokeswoman said: "Police are currently investigating the circumstances of this tragic incident and trying to establish the full facts about what has happened. The coroner has been informed." Dragon’s Den star Duncan Bannatyne was also at the scene and posted a photograph of the scene on Twitter, saying: "Tragic accident over there I am afraid."

Conservative MP Iain Duncan Smith is in trouble after saying in an interview that he could live on £53 a week “if I had to”. The amount relates to the basic amount people get who are out of work and have to live on in England. Now a petition has been drawn up and over 100,000 have signed it urging him to prove he could do it and “put his money where his mouth is”.

Please help keep the streets clean

Malaga City Mayor Francisco de la Torre has asked residents to help keep the city's streets clean now that the number of part-time street cleaners has been reduced in an effort to save some €6 million a year.

He said the state of the city's streets would depend on residents doing everything possible to back the cleaners' work with good habits, such as not littering the street and using the recycling bins properly.

The city's street cleaners cancelled their threatened Easter Week strike after reaching an agreement with the City Council about time off and holidays.

Ex-Prime Minister Aznar not to be fined

Marbella Town Council will not fine former Prime minister Jose Maria Aznar for walking his dogs loose on the beach while on holiday there last week. A Socialist councillor reported the matter last week and called for Aznar to be fined, as the law specifies.

However, environment councillor Antonio Espada said the council had not received the necessary notification of a denuncia from Seprona, the Guardia Civil's environmental protection unit, the Local

Police, the Green Patrol or agents from the provincial government's environment department and therefore the Socialist denuncia was not valid.

Socialists had made Marbella the laughing stock of Spain because there were much more important matters to be dealt with than three small dogs frolicking on a beach without muzzles.

A novelty in the town's cultural activities of exhibitions, concerts, talks and plays will be the astronomy event called "From Fuengirola to the Universe" which will be held in the Teresa Zabell Square from April 19th to 21st.

Participants will have the opportunity of observing the surface and different phases of the Moon, the surface and magnetic activity of the Sun and Saturn's rings.

Lennon exhibition in Gibraltar the

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

“Imagine that we had a great new tourist attraction, imagine that it was down at Casemates, and imagine that it was all about John Lennon. What a pleasure to open this exhibition,” Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said when he cut the red ribbon at the Gustavo Bacarisas Galleries in Casemates last Thursday to officially open the doors to the international Beatles Memorabilia and Julian Lennon Collection.

It is the first time the exhibition has been shown outside of Liverpool. The Chief Minister told those present that "it is fantastic for us to have the opportunity to see this part of his life in Gibraltar, so that all of us who are members of this community have the opportunity to understand that part of the life of the man who has become a modern icon and to see it

Foreign Ministry in a Gibraltar tizzy The Foreign Ministry reacted with horror when the Socialist Party's Number Three man in Andalucia – its deputy general secretary Mario Jimenez – defended a British Gibraltar as a "fundamental element for La Linea and the Campo de Gibraltar in general".

He said more than 6,000 workers benefitted from working on the Rock and the area's political, social and economic relations with Gib are “very important". He added: "That's why we can't understand the Partido Popular's irresponsible attitude of believing that some questions are more important than the daily bread that many of our people earn in Gibraltar."

He was referring to the continuing battle between the Rock, the UK and Spain about Gib's sovereignty. The government in Madrid recently accused La Linea's mayor Gemma Araujo of "collaborating" with the government of Gibraltar.

from the point of view of his family and son.”

Jeremy Nicholls from Copywrite, the company responsible for bringing the exhibition to Gibraltar had nothing but praise for the Gibraltar Government support for this project. He said the exhibition would be open until December 31st and, if successful, the plan was to keep it going after that.

After opening the exhibition, the Chief Minister told reporters that the exhibition married the old and the new Gibraltar. He said: “John Lennon is a modern icon, he is not someone from our prehistoric or military history, and this exhibit brings into what is an old barracks something that is related to a modern icon who has a relationship with Gibraltar.”

N

He added that the exhibition would give local

residents the chance to know another side of John Lennon and give visitors to Gib the opportunity to see “what we are all about”. “Yes, Gibraltar is about its military heritage but it is also about using it in a modern way to be able to exhibit our relationship with modern icons of the 20th Century.”

He added that to have had Gibraltar chosen for this very high profile exhibition "demonstrates that she continues to be hugely important in geographical terms, because that is what promotes the numbers of tourists that actually come here and gives us the chance to say to other the similar ventures Gibraltar is a good place to show your wares." The exhibition is open to the public from 9 am to 6 pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday.

Patio de los Leones wins award

The European Union has given the Alhambra its Europa nostra Award in the conservation and Heritage category for the restoration of the patio de los leones (patio of the lions). A spokesman for the jury said that despite the great difficulties encountered, the restoration team had paid attention to the smallest details and had left the world famous monument looking as new as it had looked when it was built more than seven centuries ago. cAMpilloS

After the bodies of a 32-year-old man, identified only as Diego G.S, and his six-year-old daughter were discovered by the man's brother-in-law in their home on Monday, the Guardia civil said it appeared the man had killed his daughter before hanging himself. The daughter appeared to have been smothered in her bed. The man, a native of campillos, was in the process of separating from the girl's mother, who lives in Mataro in catalonia although she has family in campillos. Mayor Jesus Galeote said everyone was very perplexed, because the father was a "quiet man". coin

New Tourism Office to open

The old Town Hall on Alameda Square will soon open its doors as the new Tourism office. The building has been renovated both inside and out. The facade of the old building has been returned to its original state while the inside has been completely remodelled after falling into disrepair since it was vacated some years ago. When he inspected the work recently, Mayor Fernando Fernandez said both the staff and visitors would feel "very comfortable" in the much improved building.

Whose human rights?

A

s an Amnesty International activist from 1973 to 1980, I am becoming increasingly disturbed by the Spaniards' idiosyncratic interpretation of human rights. I got involved with Amnesty when a Panamanian friend of mine was jailed for daring to take on Panama's then dictator, Omar Torrijos. Several international organis–tions worked together to get my friend, Leopoldo Aragon, released and exiled to Sweden. I was still living in London, and out of gratitude I became very involved with the group.

I

became even more involved when I went to live in Venezuela in July 1977. Amnesty knew there were political prisoners in Venezuela but had little or no information about them. I had been able to draw up a list of around 200 – all former guerrilla fighters – during a two-month visit to the country in the summer of 1976. After I returned a year later – for good as I thought, which turned out to be 25 years – I became a regular visitor to the political prisoners in three jails. One was the military prison in Caracas, the Cuartel San Carlos, which had been a convent in colonial times and whose most illustrious prisoner would be Hugo Chavez after his failed coup attempt in February 1992. One of the few good things Chavez did after he was elected president was to close the prison and restore it to its former colonial splendour. The other two jails I visited were sordid little prisons, one about two hours' drive from Caracas and the other way down by the Orinoco.

W

hat Amnesty was fighting in South America in those days was what is known as the extrajudicial death penalty – a euphemism for the many inventive ways Third World dictatorships used to do away with their enemies, all of which involved the second big issue of torture. For example, the Argentine military dictators enjoyed throwing their opponents – more often than not alive – into the sea from helicopters. The Brazilians tortured three-month-old babies to make their parents talk. The Guatemalans killed and tortured 20,000 people over a period of 10 years (an average of 5.6 a day) and left their tortured bodies by roadsides to be discovered and cow people into submission. The worst that happened to my friend Leopoldo – apart from a starvation diet and a filthy cell – was that he was strung up from a wall while a soldier tried to pull out his beard, one hair at a time. At least he lived to tell the tale and didn't "disappear", as thousands of others did.

T

he human rights situation here is nowhere near as bad as it was in the Third World in those days – and still is today in many countries – but it is disturbing because it would seem roughly one half of the population ignores the human rights of the other half. Only this time here in Spain it's not Franco persecuting and killing his enemies but the Left, which is ignoring the rights of its enemies while vociferously claiming every right under the sun for its own people.

T

ake the group which is involved in stopping the eviction of people who, by and large, didn't understand what they were letting themselves in for when they took out mortgages during the construction boom years. They were doing a good job and were getting a lot of support from judges, firemen and the police – until they decided to violate the right to privacy of any Partido Popular politician whom they blamed for the evictions. Now, the evictions started under Zapatero's Socialist government and current Socialist leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba admitted a few weeks back that the Socialists hadn't done anything to help the thousands of evictees who lost their homes while they were in power.

T

oday, these groups are picketing the homes of PP politicians and insulting them in the street – which in my opinion and that of many others violates their right to privacy. It's one thing to hold a demonstration outside Parliament, quite another to frighten a politician's wife and children as they enter or leave their own homes. If right-wing groups did the same to left-wing politicians, the noise the latter would make in protest would deafen God and all his angels. In fact, the conventional right – that is, the PP – has never indulged in such sordid tactics.

T

he question many people are asking themselves now is who the next targets are going to be. Judges? Journalists? The average copper on the beat? It's the sort of situation that could rapidly get out of hand and even end in tragedy. The government has promised protection to the targeted politicians and as you can imagine, the Left is already screaming "police brutality".

S

o my friend, if you do not belong to the Left, you have no rights.

Dubious photographs Writes for the English language version of

T

he 20-year-old photographs of Galician regional premier Alberto Núñez Feijóo cavorting with a convicted smuggler, who is now serving a prison sentence, should not be cause for alarm. They are precisely what the Partido Popular (PP) leader described on Monday – they are just photographs. The snaps were published over the weekend by El País which obtained the photographs from an unnamed source. One shows a young shirtless Núñez Feijóo on a speedboat, looking at the camera, with one of his then mates Marcial Dorado looking relaxed in the background. Similar takes of the two men vacationing on the Galician coast were also published. From day one, Núñez Feijóo has never tried to hide the fact that he was friends with Dorado and had gone on several trips with him. At the time, the now-Galician premier was an up-and-coming star in the PP ranks, serving as the number one official in the regional health department. It was at a time when Manuel Fraga, the region’s dinosaur politician, still had a firm control over the Galician PP.

D

orado, by Núñez Feijóo’s own accounts, had been arrested twice for illicit activities by the time the photographs were taken. In the early 1990s, he had amassed a fortune from tobacco smuggling and investments in petrol stations and real estate ventures. An avid seaman, Dorado also owned a yacht in Ibiza, which was later confiscated by authorities. Núñez Feijóo had accompanied his friend at least on one occasion to Andorra, which he now says was a mistake but at the time he had believed they were going to a hamlet of the same name in northern Spain. The regional premier maintains that he had checked into Dorado’s background at the time, and his advisors and friends had assured him that his friend had only been picked up twice by authorities but at the time had no convictions.

S

till, why was Núñez Feijóo hanging out with a person of dubious character? It was clear that they were close mates at the time, but the regional chief said that their relationship was strictly personal – there were no contracts signed between Dorado and the Galician government and Núñez Feijóo never had any business dealings with his then friend. He met him in the early 1990s through Manuel Cruz López, a PP member in Ferrol who also acted as Dorado’s strawman on occasion. Cruz López, who also worked as a driver for some PP bigwigs, later died in a road accident.

T

he regional premier explained that he cut his ties with Dorado in 1997 after he found out that the National Court was investigating the smuggler. Years later, Dorado was convicted of drug trafficking and is now serving a 14year-sentence.

T

his wasn’t the first time these photographs have surfaced. Núñez Feijóo admitted to knowing about their existence in 2004 but it wasn’t until this weekend that they came to light. The PP official who is said to be on track to becoming Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s heir apparent believes that some “dark hand” is bringing them out now to derail his career as the opposition clamours for his removal and banning him from ever holding office.

S

uch wrong-place-at-the-wrongtime photos showing an important figure mixing with a dubious character have and always will find a way to pop up in the world of dirty politics. In 1988, when I was covering the Venezuelan presidential campaign, one daily published an old photograph of the major opposition candidate, Eduardo Fernández, standing next to an alleged Canadian drug kingpin Gennaro Scaletta, who had been arrested in Venezuela. The ruling party used it to try to connect the opposition candidate, as well as a past president, to a crime syndicate. The dirty campaign tactics were soon forgotten after the ruling party’s candidate, Carlos Andrés Pérez won the elections.

A

fter the arrest of American serial killer and rapist John Wayne Gacy, who was executed in 1994 for murdering dozens of men and young boys in Chicago, a photograph mysteriously surfaced of the convicted assassin standing next to first lady Rosalynn Carter at a Democratic Party meeting in 1978. The snap didn’t prove anything, nor did anyone try to link President Jimmy Carter or his wife with the murders, but it was low-blow tactic used to try to undermine certain politicians and their supporters.

I

f no enterprising journalist uncovers any formal business connections or even a smoking gun contract between Núñez Feijóo and Dorado, the photos will be soon be forgotten and Spain will move on to another new scandal by next week.

What you should remember when you are buying or selling a vehicle the

WEDNESDAY, April 3rd 2013

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

If you have ever sold or bought a vehicle in Spain remember that you must notify the traffic office, (Regístro de la Dirección General de Tráfico/DGT), which is located in C/Max Estrella, 12 – Post Code 29071, in the centre of Malaga, for those people living in this province.

It is very important to register the fact that you are the new owner if you buy a vehicle, or that you are no longer the owner of the vehicle if you sell.

If you sell your vehicle you must always follow the following practical advice:

a) Never hand over the vehicle without having the sales contract or at least a copy of it, in your hands, together with a photocopy of the buyer’s identity document, or a photocopy of their passport in the case of foreigners. b) Ask the buyer to

provide you with a copy of the Circulation Permit (“Permiso de Circulación”), within a maximum of 15 days, as soon as it has changed into their name. If you do not receive this in the specified time, then you would need to go to the Traffic Department, (Jefatura de Tráfico), with the previously mentioned documents to inform them of the sale.

IMPORTANT:

“Remember that all fines from fixed radars, or fines for not passing the MOT (“ITV”), will continue to be the responsibility of the registered owner, this is why it is important to make sure that once the sale is completed that the vehicle is no longer registered in your name in the Traffic Office”.

If you buy a vehicle, again, you should register this with the traffic office,

(Regístro de la Dirección General de Tráfico), and take note of the following advice:

a) If you acquire the vehicle in a garage or concessionary, they should ensure that the paperwork is completed and then supply you with; an MOT, (in the case of second-hand cars); and the Circulation Permit, both in your name.

b) If on the other hand you buy the car from a private individual, remember that you should make sure that you keep a copy of the sales contract, together with a photocopy of the buyer’s identity document, or a photocopy of their passport, the Tax Office application form for the change of ownership, signed by the seller and buyer, and all of the vehicle’s documents, (i.e. MOT card, Circulation Permit, the receipt for the tax paid to the Town hall

for the year prior to the purchase. Once you have all the documents required you should do the following: 1. Pay the Transfer Tax to the tax office (Hacienda) for the purchase of the vehicle. You would need to complete form number 620, and hand it in to the tax office together with all the aforementioned documents.

The Transfer Tax for the purchase of a vehicle, is 4% of the official value assigned to the vehicle by the Ministry of Finance, taking into account the age and make of the vehicle. 2. You can go to any of the following Traffic Departments; the one in the province of your residence; the one in the province of the vendor´s residence; or the one in the province where the vehicle is registered.

3. Pay the taxes and submit the documentation required to the Tax office.

Remember, don’t wait until you have a problem before you visit a lawyer, save time and money by getting advice when you are buying or selling

Tia

Tia is female, a mix breed of Bretton Spaniel, and is around 12-15 months old. Tia is approximately 40cms from floor to shoulder and weighs around 10 kilos. She has not yet been spayed or chipped, but will be when she is checked over by the vet, and she seems very healthy. Poor Tia was found running up and down a road in the middle of traffic. She appeared to be confused and may possibly have been thrown from a car. She has a very good character, mixes well with

the other dogs, and has shown no sign of aggression whatsoever. She is settling in well and would make a very good family pet. If you are interested in meeting Tia personally or finding out more about her, contact Pat on 620 354 885 or visit the FAMA website at www.famaspain.com FAMA’s policy is never to have a healthy dog down. Left untreated, it can wear quite badly very quickly. Therefore, an equally important reason for having the marble renovated is to seal and protect it, and leave the surface on the marble that is not only a high gloss, non-slip, low maintenance surface, but is considerably harder than the marble itself. Fernando as from the more normal bass baritone rendering. The other Mozart duet was Sull aria from the marriage of Figaro. This was a beautiful example of harmonic perfection by the soprano and the mezzo, that was to be repeated in the “Las Flores Duet” from Delibe’s Lakme and, yes, you know the one, BA used it in their commercial. From Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi comes the soprano aria “O mio babbino caro” (Oh my beloved father) sung by Lauretto, the daughter of Gianni. The love that exuded from Julie Anne interpretation gave me goose bumps! Next came the “Habanera” from Bizet’s Carmen. The title role is that of a fiery gipsy who seduces a soldier (Jose) by taunting him with this love song. Because of this, Jose loses his sweetheart and, to make matters worse, fights with his Lieutenant over Carmen and has to desert the military. Later in the Opera he discovers Carmen with a toreador who is another of her conquests, and in a fit of rage, he kills her. Finally the two ladies joined Fernando to indulge

FÖR ANNONSERING

If you missed the inaugural Concert given by the newly formed Canto Lirico, don’t worry, there are more to come! It was nearly a full house at Teatro del Ingenio on 22nd March in San Pedro de Alcantara for the performance given by four very talented artists: Maria Rosa Perez Diaz, mezzo soprano – Julie Anne Hunter, soprano – Fernando Luigi Marquez, tenor – Maria del Carmen Perez Blanco, pianist. The first part of the preEaster evening was, appropriately enough, a series of eight sacred arias, which were warmly received by the appreciative audience. After a short interval, seven well known works from the crème de la crème of operatic composers – Mozart – Puccini – Bizet and Verdi were performed. Starting with one of the greatest love duets by Mozart’, “La ci darem la mano” (there we will entwine our hands) from Don Giovanni. The soprano and tenor, convincingly played the parts of Zerlina (fiancée to Masetto) and Giovanni, (the licentious seducer) and I enjoyed this part equally as much from

16 N Grand National Special

WEDNESDAY, April 3rd 2013

The Grand National 2013 this Saturday Read your favourite news, plus a whole lot more in

www.thenewsonline.es

This iconic race meeting starts tomorrow while the Grand National, the world’s most famous steeplechase race, can be enjoyed on Saturday with the race starting at 5:15pm (our time). As sporting sights go, few can match the sheer excitement of 40 horses thundering towards the first fence at Aintree for the John Smith's Grand National.

A race steeped in history that always provides a story, the Grand National is the ultimate test of endurance and skill for both horse and jockey, as the pairing must navigate 30 treacherous fences, and then still have enough stamina to make a challenge on the run-in. To manage a clear round in the 4-mile, 4furlong epic is no mean achievement, with the fences notoriously difficult and offering unique challenges.

Over the years, there have been countless memorable moments, Devon Loch's phantom leap in the 1956 contest, Foinavon's shock 100-1 win in 1967 and the brilliance of Red Rum, who took the chase on three occasions in 1973, 74 and 77.

In 1981 Aldaniti and Bob Champion completed a heartwarming tale when winning the race, as Aldaniti had recovered from a career-threatening injury while jockey Champion had battled back from cancer.

Last season the race provided another fairytale story as Donald McCain emulated his father and Aintree legend Ginger when winning with Ballabriggs – and that

came just a year after champion jockey Tony McCoy finally gained victory in the race at the 15th time of asking.

After starting the irrigation process on Sunday, clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch changed the going to good, good to soft in places on the Mildmay and hurdles courses and to good to soft, good in places on the National course. He said: "It's not warm but it's that easterly breeze that is quite cold and we only had that snow around ten days ago so we are watering. All three courses will be watered. Going forward the forecast is quite settled as well, albeit remaining on the cold side. We are getting down to freezing overnight with some grass frosts then looking forward it's going to gradually warm up but only to 7C, 8C, 9C during the day. I think we'll need to water again, we'll just keep an eye on it and see what we do later on in the week really." The three-day National meeting starts this Thursday, April 4th with the Grand Opening Day followed on Friday with Ladies Day and then the big race itself on Saturday. The annual event draws in 150,000 spectators from the city of Liverpool and beyond, plus it attracts a worldwide TV audience. The John Smith's Grand National itself is televised in 140 countries and attracts an audience estimated by Aintree at 600 million.

But for those on the ground at Aintree, whether it is in the salubrious Princess Royal stand or the bustling Tattersalls, or even amongst the open spaces and revelry of the Steeplechase enclosure, the experience goes well beyond the fascinating Grand National. Three days of high quality racing, often featuring Cheltenham Festival winners, support the main event, and the amenities, nightlife and restaurants of Liverpool are just a 15-minute train journey away.

All the advertisers on this page will be showing the Grand National so why not make an afternoon of it and go out and enjoy the race with others to get the real atmosphere of this Saturday’s greatest steeplechase horse race in the world starting at 5:15pm our time (4:15pm UK time). Of course, prior to the actual race there will be advice from pundits as to which horse to back, what their form is, horse and jockey’s weights on the day, what running numbers they’ve been given and what stable they are from. Last but not least of course, we’ll be able to see what colours their jockeys will be in so we can keep an eye on them as they hurtle round the course. Let’s hope it’s a safe race this year with no accidents. Above is a list of the runners at the time of going to press on Tuesday and there’s room for you to mark the latest odds. ENJOY!!

The Andalucian Bird Society welcomes you We all know that Andalucia is a great place to live; you may be interested to know that it’s also one of the best places in Europe to see birds. Besides our resident birds, we have both summer and winter visitors. And also, twice a year, millions of birds pass through on the way to, or from their summer breeding grounds.

But the chances are that you don’t know an awful lot about the birds of our region. Let’s see if you can answer these questions:

•What is the lovely, cinnamon-coloured bird with the zebra-striped crest and wings? •Are the green, noisy parakeets natives of Andalucia? •Which bird makes the strange cat-like calls on your golf course? •How many species of eagles are there in the area? •What is the name of the cheeky little grey bird with black head and often cocked tail, which scolds from low down in the bushes. If you didn’t know the

answers, then there is a whole new world out there waiting to be discovered. All you need is a pair of inexpensive binoculars, and to spend some time with someone who knows more than you do. That is where the Andalucia Bird Society comes in. We are a widespread group of mainly English speaking residents and visitors who go out once a month, or more, to different places in Andalucia to look for, and enjoy birds. Some members are beginners, new to the hobby, but

many are experienced birders who are only too happy to instruct and share their knowledge with others. We also have in our ranks a number of professionals, who are very useful to have along when it comes to the tricky warblers and waders. One of these experts leads each monthly trip, so you can be sure of getting correct identification tips, and a wealth of birding and wildlife information each time you come to a meeting. Andalucia has many prime birding locations, and attracts birders from all over Europe. Donana is probably the most famous area, and you may already have visited there. But it is so much more rewarding to go with a group who know exactly where and when to go, and can provide information about all the bird species seen. There are a huge number of other sites, equally as impressive as Donana; the Flamingo breeding lagoon at Fuente de Piedra, the Serrania of Ronda, the Odiel marshes near Huelva and the small but very productive reserve on the Guadalhorce river near the airport, to name a few.

Our visits to the local sites may just be a day’s outing, those further afield could involve a couple of nights away, at a rural hotel in some of the most unspoilt, natural reserves in Spain. As a member of the Andalucia Bird Society you will certainly improve your knowledge of birds, of Andalucia, and no doubt meet new friends.

As well as the field meetings, we provide regular newsletters giving information on the latest sightings, a checklist of species which usefully has the Spanish name as well, and we also have a website (see below) for information, articles and forum discussion groups.

We are also pleased to announce our very new quarterly magazine, “Birds of Andalucia”, which is free to members. We have produced two editions so far; the new spring issue will soon be available and is packed with interesting articles and photographs. These include sections on Booted Eagles, the scarce Whiteheaded Duck, Blackcap warblers, and the review of a day the group spent birding in Sierra de las Nieves, near Ronda. To find out more see www.andaluciabirdsociety .org or contact us by email; abs.sociedad@gmail.com

The answers to the previous questions in this article are: •The cinnamon coloured bird is, of course, the Hoopoe, or Abubilla in Spanish. •There are two different types of Parakeet, both introduced; Monk Parakeets originate from sub-tropical South America, and Rose-ringed Parakeets come from the tropics of Africa or Asia. •Little Owls love to hunt on the golf courses and make a variety of screeching calls.

They can be seen and heard, day or night (pictured above). •Here in Andalucia we are blessed with having no less than five species of eagle, which live and breed here. To give that fact some perspective, remember that poor old Britain has only a single species – another example of just how rich the birdlife is, here in Southern Spain. •The small cheeky chappie is a Sardinian Warbler, a typical Mediterranean bird (pictured below).

to highlight the many different nationalities that live within Mijas. The first was the Swedish Friendship Day earlier this year and the next one, in conjunction with the Irish Association of Marbella, will be the Irish Friendship Day on Saturday 13th April. The theme is Irish culture and products and will be shown between 12.00 midday and 6.00 pm in the large plaza in front of the town hall in Mijas village.

The Irish Consul from Los Boliches, José Miguel de la Torre y Morín, the Mayor of Mijas, Ángel Nozal together with the members of the various local Irish clubs and organizations will start the celebration at the Mijas Wall of Nations. Following the opening ceremony there is a four hour show of Irish dancing, Irish music and food for one and all to come and try and enjoy.

To name just a few of the those making a contribution so far, the Irish firm Kerrygold are coming down all the way from Madrid to promote their famous dairy products with tasty samples of Irish butter and cheddar cheese.

Closer to home and still flushed with the recent success of their St Patrick's day celebrations, the large Irish-style live music bar Pógs, from Fuengirola have set up a typically Irish bar, well stocked with Irish whiskey, beer, ales and of course Guinness. The Anglo-Irish owned Mijas Mayan Chocolate Factory will make their contribution too. This delightful accumulation of Whiskey, Guinness, chocolate, bread and butter with cheese, accompanied with an equally generous helping of Irish reels and jigs from the popular Celtic fusion band the Stolen Gnomes, a poetry reading, a demonstration of Irish dancing, a bouncy castle

and more has all the makings of a good old Irish family “Craic”.

So for a day out with a difference pop along up to Mijas village on the 13th. Visitors to the coast will find a more than adequate bus service between Fuengirola and Mijas at just 1.50 Euros a ticket. For more information call the Mijas Foreign Residents office on 952 58 90 10 or email them on frd@mijas.es “'Beidh ceol, caint agus craic againn”', as they say in Ireland “'We'll have music, chat and craic.” written by Pete Woodall

In the middle of central Marbella you will find Bistro Sardin but don’t let the name fool you, it is not sardines you will be served at this restaurant, but excellent fish and meat dishes. The story of Bistro Sardin started in Stockholm as one of the town’s smallest restaurants. Narrow aisles between the tables and lots of clients are the reason for the name. The intimate atmosphere has been taken care of at Bistro Sardin Marbella, but there are a few more seats and tables. Here you will be served well prepared dishes, cooked with a touch and taste that will give you value for your money. The atmosphere is friendly and romantic but, first of all, very homely and the staff are here to make you feel good. The menu varies from time to time but now Bistro Sardin’s menu offers you fantastic lamb racks, tournedos and entrecotes of different sizes. If you are into fish, why not taste the north Atlantic cod, served with brown butter, egg, shrimps, horseradish and

new potatoes, or you can enjoy salmon served in different ways. There is gratinated lobster, or you can eat as many prawns from the Arctic ocean (Greenland) as you want for €20 served with aioli, bread and Swedish cheese, Vasterbotten.. (both the prawns and the lobster have to be ordered two days in advance). You also find the special fish roe from Kalix in the north of Sweden. The menu always offers you Swedish classics and specialities. Don’t forget the herrings, three different kinds served with the classical condiments and why not try them together with different aquavits? Bistro Sardin also offers catering and a home delivery and take-away service. Lunches are served Tuesday to Friday between 1pm and 4pm. The Menu del Dia costs €9.50 including a drink, coffee and dessert, and an alternative lunch menu is offered with the price including a free drink. The second outing for the GI Joes may have caused some hilarity for the critics but that hasn’t stopped it being a big box office hit.

It’s big and it’s loud and the action is non-stop – there is no blockbuster cliché left unturned and no action sequence that would not strike a chord

The Sweeney Release date: April 3rd 2013

Directed by Nick Love Starring: Ray Winstone, Ben Drew, Hayley Atwell

Based on the '70s UK TV show, The Sweeney is an action-packed British police thriller from the director of Football Factory.

Jack Regan (Ray Winstone), a hardened cop who doesn't play by the rules, is confronted with a criminal from his past. With sidekick George Carter (Ben Drew aka Plan B) they are put on the case of a jewellery store heist that ends in a killing.

But is that killing really an execution in

disguise? With pressure from his boss and the fact that Regan is having an affair with that boss's wife, it's not going to be easy for him to stay out of trouble.

Pakistani leader and just a handful of GIs survive an ambush to wipe them out. It’s clear that Cobra is intent on world domination – surely not – and the GIs need to regroup and work out how to derail the evil plot.

Bruce Willis turns up as an army general ready to

instil some motivational backbone into the shattered forces and the scene is set for a showdown at a summit of world leaders. It’s fun and energetic so for a mindless trip to the movies it’s the perfect fodder. You might want to take some headache tablets though!

Apart from it being set in Middle Earth and some of the character having the same names, this film is NOT “The Hobbit” – J.R.R. Tolkien would turn in his grave if he saw what a monstrosity Jackson made of his masterpiece.

T

he film was wrong on so many levels, I don’t quite know where to start. Jackson must have been eating magic mushrooms when he read “The Hobbit”, because he has created characters and scenes that never took place in the book.

O

ne of the worst offences was the portrayal of the Orcs who kept referring to the Dwarves as “dwarf scum”. Tolkien would have never used that kind of language, and while I’m on the subject of Orcs, there were no Orc attacks or battles in “The Hobbit”– the only foul beasts were Trolls, Wargs (big dogs/wolves) and Goblins. Orcs did not appear until “The Lord of the Rings” – also if you read the appendices of Lord of the Rings, it clearly states that Orcs did not have their own language, which Jackson gave them. By the way, there was no White Goblin or Orc in the book, so I don’t where that came from!

A

American hunters, Federal agents, and a whole lot of metal coming after them, while protecting Celeste's innocent child.

nother thing that bothered me was when Bilbo acquires the ring and Gollum starts going loopy that he’s lost his ring. In the book he referred to the ring as his birthday present, as he found it on his birthday, but in the film he only refers to it as the precious. I think that this is a small significant detail, that

Jackson seems to have totally overlooked. Along with other incorrect and irritating scenes are the following, the silly Disneylike wizard character with bird poop down his face giving a hedgehog mouth to mouth, who rides around in a sleigh mushed on by magic rabbits, and bizarre, rather pointless rockmen punching each other in the face.

I

t is a total mystery to me how Jackson could have made the breathtakingly faultless Lord of the Rings trilogy, then churn out this piece of utter garbage. He has insulted the intelligence of the Tolkien aficionados and has obviously turned what was initially the fulfilment of a personal quest, into a gravy train. What other reason could there possibly be for spinning a relatively short book into another trilogy?

C

onsidering all the effort Jackson went to making the Hobbits and Dwarves look proportionally correct in “Lord of the Rings”, he seemed to have lost all interest in these details in “The Hobbit”, as the Dwarves looked like regular-sized guys. Someone else who deserves a good telling off is Christopher Lee, the man who knows Tolkien’s work better than anyone, so what on Earth was he doing in “The Hobbit” as Sauman never appeared in the book?

A

mazingly enough, I am going to end this with an apology. I think over the past few weeks I have been far too mean to Martin Freeman. Anyone who saw “The Lord of the Rings” and was offered the part of Bilbo in Jackson’s “Hobbit”, would naturally bite his hand off. Freeman did the best he could with what he was given. I am sorry Mr. Freeman, you’re not that bad!

VIRGO

Your inner world is shining brightly right now and the time is ripe to nurture your imagination with thoughts of a more ideal reality. Breakthroughs are likely when you give yourself a quiet space and tranquil environment – an inner sense of trust born from this internal void gives you comfort and hope. There is a need to rise above any negativity and be strong in the face of adversity. This will enable you to keep the high ground. Actions bring about unusual results this week and things will not happen as you expect them too. There is a frivolity and fun element coming in where you feel fortunate and as though there is a shield of protection in front of you. You may be given the time needed to get the rest and recuperation you need so that your mind is free to get busy with planning, ideas and solutions. Social activities are likely to be enjoyable and revealing.

When you feel safe and secure Cancer you function at your best, your confidence soars and your effectiveness follows. There is something going on that is not allowing you to feel at ease – keep your thoughts positive and this will allow you to rise above a lingering angst. Your public and professional life is gathering pace and there could be the beginning of a new project that will blossom and provide you with a healthy return. Great things are going on behind the scenes. You could be feeling mega confident and good right now, just be careful that this energy doesn’t cause you to think that you are above the rules or smart enough to get away with things. Remain down to earth and honest and all will work in your favour. Think your words and actions through very carefully before taking any concrete action and take better care of what you already have instead of wanting more or thinking the grass is greener on the other side. You feel so much better when you have time to organise your thoughts and prepare. There are desires welling up from within, initially this could disturb you as you try to identify what is going on. Share these feelings with someone you trust and this may bring some clarity to the restlessness within. It might be time to speak up and vocalise exactly what you want and expect in a clear and precise manner, removing the guess-work so others know totally where you are coming from.

Something you have struggled and wrestled with for a while has now run its course. Even if it appears challenging at first, the right events are happening to make sure you arrive at the right place at the right time. Finances may also improve or at least stabilise. As you let go of the instruction manual that you September 23rd - learnt the tools of the trade from, you are now ready to unleash that October 22nd understanding on the world.

October 23rd November 21st

You are feeling motivated to finally fix something that has continued to happen over and over again no matter what you do. Timing has been the missing ingredient in the process, however, all is now lining up – giving you the opportunity to be able to deal with it and get a result. There are brand new openings that arise from this, setting you on a productive course for the future. Instead of your mind going round and round considering the past, there is only one way to go now and that is forward.

not by doing what you want to do but by doing what you know needs to be done. This is now your time to shine, although, there are likely to be a few temptations distracting you as the week progresses. Others will look up to you for inspiration and motivation as they sense an energy that oozes adventure coming from within you. Seize those opportunities as magic is about to happen.

Your calmness is what makes you a force to be reckoned with right now. Even though you are extremely emotional and passionate you are showing an element of self control and wisdom in the face of this tidal wave. Because you have your feet firmly secure on the rung of the ladder there is no way anyone can shake you off. This is a perfect time for intimacy and romance and a current relationship will deepen.

Recent trends may have had you feeling like all of your efforts have been lost, as if they are not leading you in any desirable direction. This has now caused you to question many things and ultimately this way of thinking will lead to life direction changes that support you and are more relevant. By the weekend your focus will be on balancing personal relationships so that your daily life is far more harmonious than it has been. This is a terrific time to start new projects or to bring closure to finished or abandoned ones. There is a remarkable change taking place within and confidence is on the way up. An idea you had recently will turn out not to be as crazy as you initially thought, although, you can have the greatest of ideas but if you don’t put them into an action plan then they can filter away. As you get in touch with reality you are able to devise a plan to turn these ideas into profit.

What’s the Difference?

SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

It can feel like you are in the twilight zone this week, all that you do and say seems to be broadcast by an amplifier leaving you unprepared for the response that is coming back at you. In fact everything seems like it is turned upside down. Think carefully before rushing in to take action. Your appearance on the other hand is full of confidence as you are sending out a strong and powerful energy towards others – you are like a magnet.

WEDNESDAY, April 3rd 2013

I was recently asked to explain the difference between nadie, alguien, algo and nada. Well, it seemed obvious at first but then I realised that these are words that people do easily confuse. Alguien means somebody or anybody Hay alguien en la cocina – There's somebody in the kitchen ¿Hay alguien en el comedor? – Is there anybody in the dining room?

Nadie (pronounced NA-DEE-A) means nobody No hay nadie en el salon – There is nobody in the living room (ie there isn't anybody) Nadie vive en esta casa – Nobody lives in this house.

So, we notice that alguien is used for affirmative statements or questions while nadie is used for negative statements. Both refer only to people. When you want to refer to things you use algo – something and nada – nothing.

Algo for affirmative and questions: Hay algo en el suelo – There is something on the floor. ¿Quieres comer algo? – Do you want to eat something?

Nada, of course, is used for negatives No hay nada en el frigorifico – there is nothing in the fridge. No tengo nada que declarar – I have nothing to declare. Nada del otro mundo means nothing special. No es nada del otro mundo – it's nothing special.

So, hasta la próxima – until next time. Ya está – That's it. Valerie

Campaigners welcome Hairdresser that listens patent rejection Advertorial

Healthcare campaigners have welcomed India's rejection of a legal bid by Swiss company Novartis to patent a new version of its cancer drug, Glivec. Novartis applied for a patent in 2006 for its new version of the drug, arguing that it was easier to absorb and therefore qualified as an innovation. However, the Indian patent authority rejected the application based on a law aimed at preventing companies from getting fresh patents by making only minor changes to existing drugs, a practice known as "evergreening". Officials also turned down a subsequent appeal by the company three years later. Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) lawyer

Leena Menghaney said: "The ruling has come as a big relief and will save a lot of lives across the developing world." Anand Grover, a lawyer representing Cancer Patients Aid Association, said he was "ecstatic with the ruling". "This will go a long way in providing affordable medicine for the poor." Novartis said the Supreme Court's ruling "discourages future innovation".

The decision means generic drugmakers can continue to sell cheaper copies of Glivec in India, one of the fastest growing pharmaceutical markets. Patents usually protect the companies for 20 years of exclusive sales. After that, it is open to other

firms who can make cheaper copies of the original drug. Once the protection expires, the first company to challenge the patent gets an exclusive right to sell the copy for 180 days.

After 180 days, more companies can sell the generic versions, potentially resulting in a further price drop. India's generic drug makers are among the biggest in the world and many expect them to benefit from patents expiring in the coming years. Glivec, which is used to treat chronic myeloid leukaemia and other cancers, costs about $2,600 (£1,710) a month. The generic equivalent is currently available in India for just $175.

Obesity-reducing microchip to undergo trials An "intelligent" microchip designed by researchers at Imperial College London to suppress appetite is about to be tested on animals. Using cuff electrodes, the chip is attached to the vagus nerve within the peritoneal cavity found in the abdomen, which plays a role in appetite as well as a host of other functions within the body.

The chip and cuffs are designed to read and

process electrical and chemical signatures of appetite within the nerve. The chip can then act upon these readings and send electrical signals to the brain reducing or stopping the urge to eat.

The researchers said the chip could provide an alternative to "gross surgery". "There will be a little tiny insert and it will be so designed as to have no side effects, but restrict appetite in a natural way."

They added that unlike gastric banding, the chip would reduce both consumption and hunger pangs, and was therefore more likely to be effective. The project has just received over €7 million in funding from the European Research Council. If the animal trials are successful, the chip will be ready for use in human beings in three years' time.

Calvin’s Hair Studio owned by Calvin Lee started as a company in the UK in 1985 and multiplied to four salons within seven years of trading until in 2000 the salons were sold to Calvin’s managers as he wanted to go off and try something new.

Calvin’s first job was with a company called Goldwell, where he became a colour technician and later took his own two-day seminars around the UK teaching hairdressers how to give a proper consultation to their clients – something today he still finds very important when listening to his clients. After five years with the company he was head hunted by Redken, and travelled to South America and the Far East teaching colour and gained a wealth of experience presenting on stage.

Five years on another challenge was presented when a company called KMS – then a relatively new company to Europe – invited Calvin to join them as a technician, where the job involved travelling around Europe promoting their products.

Throughout these years Calvin gathered a wealth of experience beyond what he had learnt in a salon environment.

Forward to 2006 and Calvin decided to have a complete change and moved from the UK to Turkey where the idea was to relax and give up working, but after a year he felt that it was a waste of his knowledge and experience not to use it so got involved teaching hairdressing to Turkish children straight out of school. They were great pupils and of course his Turkish improved ten-fold. 2010 brought yet another change as Calvin arrived in Spain where his first job was actually in the salon he owns today in Centro Nordico. Calvin worked there on a parttime basis and also worked in a salon in Benalmadena.

Calvin’s Hair Studio relaunched itself this year when the salon formerly known as Ebony became available in Centro Nordico on the Mijas road.

Calvin loves being back in this salon as he always loved the atmosphere there. The salon has taken off unbelievably well and Calvin is looking forward to the business growing.

Two die of bird ’flu Two men have died in China, after contracting a strain of bird ´flu not previously known in humans, Chinese officials said on Monday. The men, aged 27 and 87, both fell ill with the H7N9 strain in February and died some weeks later in Shanghai. A woman of 35 who caught the virus elsewhere is said to be critically ill. The officials said it is unclear how the strain

spread, but the three did not infect each other or any close contacts. They said the cause of death had been identified as H7N9, a strain of avian flu not thought to have been transmitted to humans before, for which there is no vaccine. Another strain of bird flu, H5N1, has led to more than 360 confirmed human deaths since 2003 and the deaths of tens of millions of birds.

With the great gift of being able to play practically anybody, Richard Griffiths died aged just 65

From Shakespeare to Potter, he will be missed

… and tributes come flooding in from fellow actors for this great man of the theatre

Richard Griffiths died from complications following heart surgery at the age of 65 on Thursday. To some he was the eccentric, lecherous Uncle Monty in the 1987 cult film favourite Withnail & I, to others he was the inimitable and highly intelligent (despite what his superiors seemed to think) Detective Inspector Henry Crabbe in Pie In The Sky and to yet more he was the stern Uncle Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter films. He was probably best known as inspirational teacher Hector in Alan Bennett’s The History Boys – which earned him Laurence Olivier and Tony awards. His unexpected death in hospital on Thursday came at the age of 65 and followed a

stellar career that brought him plaudits on both sides of the Atlantic. Daniel Radcliffe, who performed alongside him in the Harry Potter films and the stage play Equus, led the tributes to Griffiths. He said: “Richard was by my side during two of the most important moments of my career. In August 2000, before official production had even begun on Potter, we filmed a shot outside the Dursleys’, which was my first ever shot as Harry. I was nervous and he made me feel at ease. Seven years later, we embarked on Equus together. It was my first time doing a play but, terrified as I was, his encouragement, tutelage and humour made it a joy.” Sir Nicholas Hytner, director of

the National Theatre, hailed the veteran actor’s stage skills and said his death would devastate his “army of friends”. On stage, he was known for his zero-tolerance approach to mobile phones. In 2004, he famously ordered a man out of the National Theatre when his phone repeatedly rang during a performance of The History Boys. The following year, he stopped mid-speech during a production of Heroes at Wyndham’s Theatre to scold a woman whose phone kept ringing. His agent, Simon Beresford, said: “Richard gave acting a good name. He was a remarkable man and one of our greatest and best-loved actors. He will be greatly missed.”

Madonna A new Jackson trial to begin inspects schools Madonna arrived in Malawi on Sunday to inspect the schools she has built with an organisation called BuildOn in the native country of her two adopted children, David Banda and Mercy James who accompanied her on the trip. Currently 3,800 students attend the ten schools that have been built over the last nine months but local Education Minister Eunice Kazembe said that the structures “are not schools” but are rather classroom blocks – a claim denied by Madonna’s philanthropy manager Trever Nielson. Nielson said: "There's no controversy, the schools are built to the exact national standards of Malawi, like every other

Malawian school. The bottom line is that 3,800 children are going to school now who were not going to school before." Madonna, said to be the single largest international philanthropic donor to Malawi, also supports childcare in the country which is home to nearly a million children orphaned by AIDS and on Sunday she visited one of the orphanages she sponsors in the capital Lilongwe. Malawi is a small landlocked African country sandwiched between Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia. Whether they are schools or classrooms, kids are now getting an education who weren’t before so, does it really matter?

Once more Michael Jackson’s name is to be dragged through the courts as his family gets set to sue the promotor of his ill-fated come-back tour, AEG Live for what is reported to be 25 billion dollars, including 5 billion for loss of future earnings.

They claim the company is guilty of the “negligent hiring” of physician Dr. Conrad Murray who now lingers in prison after being found guilty of the singer’s death. Legal analysts are said to be “staggered” by the amount of the claim. It has been said that the family intend to call Jackson’s 16-year-old son to give evidence at the trial that is to take around nine weeks to testify about witnessing his father’s dying moments. And another Prince, this time

the pop star, is also to be called to testify about his dealings with AEG Live by Jackson’s mother Katherine and the family.

From AEG Live’s side, they reportedly intend to bring up Jackson’s previous trial for child molestation and will seek to show that the star had previous drug issues well before he met Murray. The company will argue that they were not responsible for Murray’s actions or what happened to Michael Jackson. Meanwhile, Dr. Murray has refused to give evidence at the trial fearing that it may jeopardise the appeal he has launched against his conviction.

And that’s not the last of the rows going on. Judge Yvette Palazuelos

has yet to rule whether or not TV cameras will be allowed inside the court. So far she has refused but those challenging her ruling are saying that “the very principle of justice for the millions who will not have a seat in court means them being able to watch it on TV.” Citing the massive global interest in the Murray trial and “the importance of the public seeing justice at work”. And they may just get their way. For years it has been quite normal practice to have TV cameras in courts in California.

I am beginning to despise Vodaphone here in Spain. I have had one of their phones for nigh on 20 years, mainly in the UK and, in fact have 10 lines with them as I run a business. Recently my Blackberry started to go wrong. It turned itself off for no good reason, it wouldn’t pick up if there was even a small hillock in the way and it certainly wouldn’t get a signal at my home that is in a valley. As I said, I run a company and I have been accumulating points for almost four years. The points are enough to get a new Blackberry (I’m used to what to press when on them so I don’t want to change to another phone make) and I could use some of the points plus a charge of €65 on my next bill. We pressed all the right

buttons and expected the phone to turn up in, as per their website, “7 to 10 days”. So we waited, and we waited and we waited but, of course, no phone turned up. We called Vodafone and they told us that, despite having accumulated thousands of points, if I wanted a new phone I had to sign a new contract with them. What a rip off! I’ve been with the company for years, I’ve always paid my bills on time and now they want a new contract because, obviously, the original one ran out ages ago. But they want me to agree to another couple of years with them on this one line. They said that this was their normal practice. I may well be about to change all my company lines to another provider! And while I’m on my

I read the letter a couple of weeks ago from the person whose car had been damaged by a cyclist going through a red light. This also happened to me but not in the same place. I was in a long line of stationary traffic and my wife decided to get out and walk to the shop leaving me to catch up and park the car when I could. She checked that all was clear behind (she was in the front

passenger seat) then opened the door. To our utter horror there was a loud bang and a cyclist had hit the door at a rapid rate of knots. The bike was virtually destroyed such was the velocity and the rider was in a heap on the floor. He told us afterwards that he had seen the line of traffic and decided to go up the inside of all of the cars. He apparently couldn’t see why he should even attempt to slow down to

take into account the situation and even tried to tell me it was my fault that he’d been hurt! Five minutes later, another one did the same thing and went straight through a red light. If there had been anybody on the crossing there would have been no way he could possibly have stopped and would have run straight into them. It’s about time cyclists realised that the rules of the road apply to them too.

We live on the campo in Coin and have a number of steep banks on the property, which are impossible to weed by hand. Following the recent rains they are now totally overgrown. Due to new laws we are unable to spray them with weed killer as we do not have the necessary qualifications, and to spray illegally can mean a 3000 euro fine. We have made enquiries in the past about obtaining the qualification, but nobody seems to have an answer.

Can anybody tell us how to overcome this problem or let us know of someone with the qualification who could spray for us? Any help would be appreciated.

soapbox... Why is it that banks feel they can take a month to “study” the renewal of a loan or overdraft when the company is only allowed to go and get the paperwork from the bank an hour before you are due to go and sign at the notario for it? Not that I’m a cynic or anything but could it possibly be because they don’t want you to have any time to read and translate all the small print that is contained therein? And they get really shirty when you tell them you don’t want their insurance!

Editor says: I have been told that the course that you have to take to enable you to use pesticides is in Spanish only so is very difficult for foreigners living here to get. Having said that, I haven’t seen the new laws affecting any of my Spanish neighbours who are still spraying exactly what they like, where they like!

T

Last week March 28th was the 83rd birthday of the ex-planet Pluto. he story of Pluto’s discovery and final relegation goes back a long way. For centuries it had always been known that there were six planets in the Solar System. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are all visible to the naked eye and of course the Earth is a planet. But in the mid 1700s astronomers noticed slight discrepancies in the orbit of Saturn and so it was predicted that there must be another planet further out than Saturn that was affecting its orbit. he search began and on 13th March 1781 Sir William Herschel announced the discovery of a new planet which he named Uranus. But things were still not right in the outer Solar System and the orbit of Uranus was now brought into question, perhaps there was another planet even further out than Uranus? nd so the search began again and by the mid 1840’s two separate groups of astronomers, one in France the other in England, began to search for the planet and on 23rd September 1846 Neptune was discovered less than 1° from its calculated position. The Sun’s family of eight planets was now complete, but not for long. eptune’s orbit was also being disturbed by another unknown body and so in 1906 an American named Percival Lowell began the search for the Planet X. Using the telescope he had founded in Arizona in 1894 Lowell and another astronomer named William H. Pickering began calculating the position of Planet X. Lowell and his observatory conducted the search until his death in 1916, but to no avail. Unknown to Lowell, on March 19th, 1915, photographs had captured two faint images of Pluto, but they were not recognised for what they were. he trail went cold until in 1929 a 23year-old student astronomer named Clyde Tombaugh (1906-1997, pictured) was given the task to hunt for the elusive planet. Tombaugh systematically imaged the night sky in pairs of photographs taken two weeks apart, and then he examined each pair to determine whether any objects had shifted position. Using a machine called a blink comparator, he rapidly shifted back and forth between views of each of the plates and any objects that had changed position between photographs would then blink on and off. On February 18th 1930, after nearly a year of searching, Tombaugh discovered a possible moving object on photographic plates taken on January 23rd and January

29th of that year. The announcement that Planet X had been discovered came on March 13th 1930. ow came the job of naming the new planet. Names were suggested from Atlas to Zeus but in Oxford, England an 11-year-old girl called Venetia Burney suggested the name Pluto. The name ticked all the right boxes as Pluto was the god of the underworld and the first two letters ‘PL’ were the initials of Percival Lowell whose observatory had been used to discover the planet in the first place. And so on March 28th it was officially announced that Planet X was to be named Pluto. ut almost from the day of its discovery doubts were being raised as to whether or not Pluto should be classed as a planet. Pluto’s orbit is such that for part of its orbit around the Sun it actually comes closer to the Sun than Neptune, and while all the other planets keep very closely to the ecliptic Pluto’s orbit is tilted by quite a lot away from the main plane. Pluto is not very big, it is about 0.6% of the Earth’s mass. In 1978 a companion to Pluto was discovered. Charon is about the same size as Pluto and so can’t really be called a moon of Pluto. The question was raised ‘if Pluto is a planet then why can’t Charon also be called a planet?’. n 2005 two more satellites were discovered called Hydra and Nix. It now appeared that Pluto was simply one of any number of rocky bodies that inhabited the space at the edge of the Solar System. Two more as yet unnamed bodies have also now been discovered. So on August 24th 2006 the International Astronomical Union finally agreed and downgraded Pluto to a dwarf planet. n 2006 NASA launched the ‘New Horizons’ spaceship carrying the ashes of Clyde Tombaugh, due to rendezvous with Pluto on July 15th 2015. nd for the record, Mickey Mouse’s dog that also first appeared in 1930 was named after the planet Pluto!

New Champions at Santa Maria Bowls Members requested a Grand Finals Day this season and, with the exception of the Drawn Pairs and Singles Finals to identify the club’s representatives for this year’s Champion of Champions event, the remaining finals were played in glorious weather conditions on Monday, 18th March. LADIES & GENTS 2-BOWL SINGLES:

These were very closely contested and were “nip and tuck” throughout. In the Gents’ Final, Stuart Thacker retained his title with a thrilling 21-18 victory over the Club’s newly elected Vice-Captain Dale Tomlin. The Ladies’ contest, between two players seeking to win their first ever Club title, was a marathon. Ultimately it was Sheila Booton who emerged victorious with a hard fought 21-17 win against Dine Warn. HANDICAP SINGLES:

Paul Griffith, the only “scratch player” in the competition, had battled through some tough games to reach the final where his opponent was John Winslow playing off +3. 90% of the games in the tournament were decided with 4 shots, a testimony to the excellent handicapping, but no one could have predicted the dramatic outcome to this final. With Paul holding game at 20-19, and his bowl resting on the jack, John’s final bowl of the end rested shot to take the

final into a “one end shootout”. Both held victory on the last end with bowls in close proximity to the jack, but it was John who held on to take his first ever Singles title at the club. NOMINATED PAIRS:

A score-line of 23-5 suggests a one-sided affair – it was far from that! What we witnessed was a superb display of lead bowling from Alan Turner backed up, when necessary, by an excellent Skip’s performance from Susan Walker. Their opponents, Stuart Thacker & Nancy Shaw, played well but had no answer to the relentless pressure applied by their opponents. DRAWN TRIPLES:

When the draw was made, one team stood out as being the well balanced unit to take the title. Susan Walker, Mo Huddleston & Dot Clark were the hot favourites against Murray Johns, Phyllis Thomson and the newly crowned Ladies 2Bowl Champion, Sheila Booton. The lead changed hands throughout but, thanks to constant pressure from his front end, it was Murray’s Triple which edged in front on the 16th end and they ultimately ran out deserving 21-14 winners. CLUB SINGLES:

With so few members unable to commit to the Champion of Champions, the club introduced this new competition with Ladies

and Gents competing on equal terms. No one would have predicted the finalists but, with the fancied names falling by the wayside at an alarming rate, it was Nancy Shaw and Dale Tomlin who emerged from the pack to contest the final. Both had convincing wins in their semi-finals, Nancy against Alan Turner and Dale against Marjorie Johns. It was Nancy who held the initiative for most of the game but, to Dale’s credit, he battled back continually and tied the game at 18-18. Sadly for him he lost his second final of the day 21-18 to give Nancy the honour of being the inaugural Champion of the Club Singles. LADIES v GENTS FOR THE MICHAEL WARD MEMORIAL TROPHY:

This match follows the club’s A.G.M. and unfortunately, on this occasion, heavy rainfall curtailed events with only 8 ends played. The Gents had a narrow victory in 2012 and the signs indicated a similar outcome until nature intervened. Arthur and Marjorie, the team captains, had both been able to select strong teams but it was Arthur who ultimately emerged with the “bragging rights” for the coming year with his team winning by 5 shots. Who knows what would have happened if 18 ends had been completed! By Murray Johns (President & Competition Secretary )

Laura Trott fourth on her road debut with new team Double Olympic champion Laura Trott finished fourth on her debut with the Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling team at the GP Dottignies in Belgium. Trott, 20, won two golds in the velodrome at London 2012, and made a bold start with her new team on the road as part of a 13rider breakaway. She was narrowly beaten to third place by Dutch rider Sanne van Paassen. Dani King, Trott's team-mate in Britain's gold-medal winning Olympic pursuit team, finished 12th.

Andy Murray regains his world Number two ranking Britain's Andy Murray battled past David Ferrer in a gruelling final to win his second Miami title and regain his position in the rankings. The Scot, 25, saved a match point on his way to winning 2-6 6-4 7-6 (7-1) for his ninth Masters title.

Murray recovered from losing the first five games and survived a Hawk-Eye call at match point down in the final set. The victory brought a 26th career title and ensured he will pass Roger Federer in the new world rankings on Monday. It was also Murray's first win at the elite Masters level since he beat Ferrer in Shanghai at the end of 2011, although he has since won Olympic

Within the next week Poker Stars will start dealing Five Card Omaha and three other new and exciting cash games. Five Card Omaha is becoming increasingly popular in mixed live cash games and now it will be possible to play this fun game from the comfort of your own home – or even on your favourite mobile device thanks to the superb PokerStars Mobile App. The other new games set to launch are Five Card Omaha Hi/Lo, Courchevel and Courchevel Hi/Lo. As the name suggests, Five Card Omaha and its Hi/Lo variant play the same as standard Omaha except each player receives five hole cards instead of four. Players then use exactly two cards from their five hole cards to make the best five-card hand.

Sunday's final was played in strength-sapping humidity, which contributed to an unusually high 14 breaks of serve and left both men visibly struggling in the latter stages. "It was such a tough match," said Murray, who was ranked number two for three weeks in 2009 – the same year he first won in Miami.

"It could have gone either way, both of us were struggling physically at the end. It's so tough against him. He has a great attitude, he's a great fighter. I am sure we will have more tough matches in the future."

Courchevel is extremely popular in France but that popularity has started to filter through to the UK. This crazy game generates tons of action thanks to each player being dealt five hole cards and then the first card of the flop is dealt face up before the first round of betting takes place! All four new games will be available at 6-Max tables at various stakes. Now this is what I call busting the bank of the casino! Last week in Melbourne, home of the Aussie Millions and 2013

Fabian Cancellara claimed a commanding victory in one of cycling's Monument races, the Tour of Flanders. Radioshack-Leopard's Swiss star claimed his second triumph in the race after dropping race favourite Peter Sagan on the Paterberg, the 17th and final climb on the arduous 256.2km route. With the historic Wednesday night clash in mind it was a surprisingly strong Málaga outfit that took to the park against Rayo. Rayo Vallacano 1 - 3 Málaga Pedro Morales made his full debut performance since joining from Dynamo Zagreb in January as Málaga knew three points were a must. Rayo had the first decent chance on four minutes with Piti making space well for himself to shoot narrowly wide. It was a scrappy start to the game but on 21 minutes Málaga were in front, a Morales free kick finding Weligton free at

the back post to head home. On the half hour though Rayo were level. Leo was brought down by Caballero in the box but replays show it was harsh on Málaga. Piti stepped up to score from the resulting penalty. Julio Baptista sky’d a chance over the bar on 38 minutes and Jose Carlos had a free header for Rayo which he put wide. Just after the re-start Lass had a shot saved by

You're a liar! Nasri hits back at mancini and praises former manager Wenger as his best-ever boss in a further snub. Samir Nasri has labelled Roberto Mancini a liar after the Manchester City manager questioned his £24million man’s efforts in training. The Frenchman has endured a difficult campaign with the Barclay’s Premier League champions and was damned with faint praise by Mancini after his impressive showing against Newcastle on Saturday. Nasri turned in a man-of-the-match performance in City’s 4-0 win and the manager joked that he ‘wanted to give him a punch’ for only showing his best form in fits and bursts.‘I don’t know what the difference was today,’ Mancini said. ‘I can’t understand sometimes a player with his quality doesn’t play like today every game.”

Back in action this weekend

The final day of 2013 MotoGP pre-season testing ended with a twist when Cal Crutchlow put his satellite Tech 3 Yamaha ahead of the factory favourites at Jerez. Rain interrupted all three days in Spain, with rain on the final morning making Valentino Rossi's dry Sunday lap time look invincible. The MotoGP 2013 season bursts into action under the floodlights at the Losail circuit in Qatar this coming weekend.
