Accolades for former PM Margaret Thatcher pour in
Tributes are being paid at home and abroad to Baroness Thatcher after her death at the age of 87.
David Cameron said she had been a "great Briton" while US President Barack Obama called her a "great champion of freedom and liberty".
Lady Thatcher died "peacefully" after suffering a stroke while staying at the Ritz hotel in central London. She had been staying at the hotel since being discharged from hospital at the end of last year. An undertaker's van carrying a silver casket left the hotel just after midnight for an undisclosed location. The funeral of the former
prime minister will be held next Wednesday with full military honours at St Paul's Cathedral. The union jack above Number 10 Downing Street has been lowered to half-mast while Parliament will be recalled from its Easter recess on Wednesday to enable MPs to pay tributes. David Cameron heard the news in Madrid, after a meeting with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. He immediately cut short his trip to Europe – he was due in France after leaving Madrid – to return
to London, where he described Lady Thatcher as "the patriot prime minister" and the country's "greatest peacetime" leader. While acknowledging that she had "divided opinion", Mr Cameron said she had "taken a country that was on its knees and made it stand tall again.
"Margaret Thatcher loved this country and served it with all she had," he said. "For that she has her well-earned place in history – and the enduring respect and gratitude of the British people."

Like her or loathe her, Margaret Thatcher’s passing on Monday will leave a lot of people thinking about her days in office. The Iron Lady, as she was referred to, pulled Britain back to being able to use the term “Great” in front of i’s name kicking and screaming all the way. She refused to bow down to threats from unions to plunge the country into even more debt and she took the UK to war with Argentina when they invaded the Falkland Islands. In her famous speech that concluded “You may turn if you want to. The lady’s not for turning”, we saw the Iron Lady show that she had a core of steel when it came to defending, in her view, the country she loved. Mrs Thatcher was one of those people who, if she thought she was right, would dig her heels in no matter what anybody else said and stick to her views, making sure that her ideas were adhered to. She made life jolly uncomfortable some of

Among international reactions, US President Barack Obama said "America has lost a true friend", while German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she would "never forget her part in surmounting the division of Europe and at the end of the Cold War". She was in power when the UK fought a war following Argentina's invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1982 but during her later years in office became associated with Euroscepticism and was increasingly at odds with other senior figures in the Conservative Party.
the time for her ministers who may have opted for an easy way out. And good for her! Life can’t have been easy for her as Prime Minister. Lots of people hated her views but, did this lady have guts or what?! She was not an out-andout feminist but she was one lady that did more for women’s rights in the UK than most after the suffragettes – with women seeing that, if you put your mind to something and work bloody hard at it, women can achieve more than they ever thought possible. Mrs Thatcher’s legacy is that hard work and fair play works if you want it to enough.

differences over economic policy, said the former PM could be a "bit dictatorial" but that key decisions including the decision to press ahead with the poll tax – which he described as her "biggest blunder" – had been agreed collectively. But opponents attacked Lady Thatcher's economic legacy and political style. Lord Kinnock said the "poor had got poorer for the first time in a century" under her rule while Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said she had "prolonged the war and caused great suffering" in Northern Ireland by "draconian, militaristic policies". International & National News Accolades pour in for Margaret Thatcher In a statement, The National Union of Mineworkers said Lady Thatcher had "set out to serve those whose interests were profit for the few" and this had led to the "decimation" of the coal industry.
Small gatherings in various parts of the country, notably in Glasgow, and in Brixton in London, were formed by people who said they were celebrating her death. The Brixton gathering attracted a heavy police presence and led to small scale acts of vandalism and graffiti. Baroness Thatcher was born Margaret Roberts, the daughter of a shopkeeper and
Conservative councillor in Grantham, Lincolnshire, in 1925. She first became an MP in 1959. Having been education secretary, she successfully challenged former PM Edward Heath for her party's leadership in 1975 and went on to become the first woman to become prime minister of Britain and the first to lead a major Western power in modern times.
Hard-driving and hardheaded, she led her Conservative Party to three straight election wins and held office for 11 years – May 1979 to November 1990 – longer than any other British politician in the 20th century. By the time she left office, the
principles known as Thatcherism – the belief that economic freedom and individual liberty are interdependent, that personal responsibility and hard work are the only ways to national prosperity, and that the free-market democracies must stand firm against aggression – had won many disciples, and even some of her strongest critics accorded her a grudging respect.

Speaking at a news conference after meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron, Rajoy said that just as individual European Union countries have embarked on a reform agenda, “reforms should also be carried out with the area of the EU” to improve countries’ funding and stimulate growth. said the EU needs to make an “urgent and major effort” to help European partners and cited the case of Portugal, where painful adjustments and reforms have proved “insufficient”. Rajoy said the EU should be “strong, flexible and have at its disposition instruments that other nations in the world possess”. Germany has consistently opposed direct monetary injections by the ECB. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble said on Monday that allowing the ECB to print money and flooding the economy with it was not the solution to the crisis.

As a result, the money spent on trips taken by the Royal family, security and palace maintenance will be detailed on the Royal family's website, which for the past two years has been posting how much money the Royal Household has received from the public coffers, without detailing any budgetary items or expenses.
There has been intense public pressure to put the Royal family's spending under public scrutiny following a number of scandals that have tarnished the monarchy –

For the first time ever, the High Court has jailed a Senegalese woman for the genital mutilation of her child outside of Spanish territory before the family arrived in the country.
the latest being a court subpoena issued for Princess Cristina to testify in her husband's Nóos Institute inquiry.
On Monday, her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, informed King Juan Carlos of his intention to take up a job offer made by Spanish handball coach Valero Rivero, who has been asked to take charge of the Qatari national team. Urdangarin and Rivera have been friends since
the latter was coach at FC Barcelona’s handball team in the 1990s, when Urdangarin was one of the club’s key players and an Olympic star for Spain.
Urdangarin is expected to travel to the emirate shortly to negotiate his contract. Princess Cristina will stay in Spain with the couple’s four children, at least until the end of the school year.
It condemned Fatoumata D., 41, to two years in prison and ordered her to pay €10,000 in compensation for the injury to her youngest daughter. In the past, sentences have only been handed down in cases where parents already residing in Spain had travelled outside the country so that their daughters could undergo the ritual ablation.
Fatoumata and her four children – three boys and an underage girl – arrived in Barcelona in 2010 to join her husband, Bouly T., a Spanish resident since 1999. When a paediatrician
discovered the mutilation during a medical examination carried out as part of her residency application, Fatoumata denied all knowledge of it, saying the ablation must have taken place when her daughter, who was one at the time, was left in the care of her grandmother. She added that she was against the practice, having suffered it herself, and that she would not have knowingly allowed it to happen.
However, the nurse present at the examination testified that when told of their daughter’s injuries, the parents acted with “indifference”. She said the father had said the circumcision was “normal” and “part of our culture and tradition”. In the face of such testimony the High Court ruled there was “no room for doubt of Fatoumata’s responsibility”.

Sara Montiel, the outspoken and often scandalous Spanish actress who became the mAdrid first to achieve Hollywood stardom, died suddenly at her home in Madrid on Minimum marrying age raised Monday. She was 85. Born Maria Antonia Abad in Campo de Criptana in the central region of La Mancha, Montiel starred in more than 50 films, many of which were musicals which showcased her husky singing voice, becoming known only as "Sarita" in the process.
Initially, her career in Spain was not very successful but it took off in Mexico in the late 1940s where she starred in films such as “Carcel de Mujeres” (Women’s Prison). From there she headed for Hollywood, where she soon attracted the attention of actors and directors. She played a supporting role in the legendary 1955 western “Vera Cruz” alongside actors Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster. Her second U.S. film was the musical “Serenade,” with tenor Mario Lanza and Joan Fontaine and Vincent
Price as stars. Spanish actor Jose Sacristan said on Monday: “She was the Spanish star with the greatest international impact until the arrival of Javier (Bardem) and Penelope (Cruz).”
After her successes in Mexico and the U.S., Montiel returned to Spain to star in 1957’s “El Ultimo Cuple” (The Last Couplet), which became one of the highest grossing movies in Spanish cinema history. Montiel was paid more than $1 million for her next film, “La Violetera” (The Violet Seller), something unheard of for a Spanish star in those days. In the mid-1970s, Montiel gave up film work and dedicated herself to live musicals on stage and television.
Montiel had four husbands and many lovers, among them Ernest Hemingway and James
Health, Social Services and Equality minister Ana mato said last Friday that the government intends to amend the Civil Code to increase the minimum marrying age from 14 to 16.
Dean. Her first husband was American actor and film director Anthony Mann, whom she married in 1957 and divorced in 1961. Her second marriage, to Spanish engineer Jose Vicente Ramirez, was even shorter.
The great love of her life was Mallorcan businessman Pepe Tous, whom she married in 1979 after living with him for nine years. They adopted two children, Thais and Zeus, before he died in 1992. Her last marriage in 2000 was to Cuban Tony Hernandez, who was 38 years her junior. The marriage, which was rejected by her adopted children, soon ended in an acrimonious divorce.
Currently, minors can marry at 14 if they have judicial permission to do so in cases where their parents object but do not need such permission if their parents consent. A spokesman for the social services department confirmed that the government also wants Parliament to debate the minimum age of consent in sexual relations, which currently stands at 13 years. The initiatives are part of a broader plan to protect minors, which includes measures dealing with harmful content on the internet. mAdrid
Plea for fund for poor
Montiel was buried in Madrid on Tuesday after her funeral cortege wound for one-and-a-half hours through the centre of Madrid to the San Jose cemetery, while two of her films were shown on huge screen in the central square of El Callao. Madrid Mayor Ana Botella said she intended to name a street after her.
Socialist Party secretary general Alfredo Pérez rubalcaba on Sunday asked for a "great commitment" from the political institutions and the country's social sectors to come up with a €1-billion fund this year to help fight growing poverty in Spain. He told a party meeting the fund would not amount to more than 0.1 per cent of Spain's Gross domestic product and that the initiative "would bring everyone together to find a way out of this problem, which gets more dramatic by the day ."
rubalcaba said such a fund would help more than 500,000 poor families, create or maintain around 30,000 jobs, and help some 80,000 more people return to the job market.

World News Putin shrugs off German protests Russian President Vladimir Putin was greeted by protests in Germany and the Netherlands as he met the leaders of both nations for trade talks on Monday.
Hundreds of gay rights activists picketed outside his meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in Amsterdam, while three topless members of Ukrainian women's group Femen briefly interrupted his visit to a German trade fair with Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier in the day. The female activists had bared their torsos, covered in antiPutin slogans, and shouted "Putin dictator", while he was touring the
business fair with Merkel in Hanover. Putin said he "liked this performance".
Femen have staged several protests around Europe against Russia's detention of feminist punk band Pussy Riot. "We knew it was coming," Putin told Merkel at a press conference. "You should thank the Ukrainian girls for helping you promote the fair." Putin then flew to Amsterdam where he faced further protests, this time from gay rights activists accusing Russia of discriminating against homosexuals. Protesters booed and whistled at Putin's arrival
at the Hermitage Museum, while human rights group Amnesty International had put up fake police tape proclaiming the area a "human rights-free zone". Meanwhile houses and bridges in Amsterdam's historic canal district were draped with banners and the rainbow flag of the gay

rights movement.
The demonstrations did not faze Putin. "Thank god, the gays didn't strip naked here," he joked at a press conference. He also deflected criticism over Russia's treatment of gay rights, saying: "These people, like others, have all rights and freedoms."
Venezuela campaign heats up Venezuelan opposition candidate Henrique Capriles told the tens of thousands of people who turned out to hear his campaign message in Caracas on Sunday that "the government is now riddled with corruption, hatred and evil," and called on voters to rid the country of a government that has "lost its way".
Venezuelans will go to the polls on April 14th to
choose a successor to the late president, Hugo Chavez, who died last month after 14 years in office.
Capriles, a 40-year-old lawyer and politician, said he wants to encourage free-market economies and tackle crime, without neglecting strong social policies. Official opinion polls have given the government's candidate – acting President Nicolas
Maduro – a strong lead but a recent unofficial poll showed Capriles inching ahead. He called on all Venezuelans to go to the polls next Sunday and do their civic duty saying Maduro's candidacy had "crashed". During a rally in Amazonas state on Saturday, Maduro put a curse on those not voting for him next Sunday. He likened Capriles to
Spanish conquerors fighting indigenous people in the 16th Century. "If anyone among the people votes against me, he is voting against himself, and the curse of Maracapana will fall on him," he said. He was referring to a 16th century battle when Spanish colonial forces inflicted a decisive defeat on indigenous fighters.

Forensic experts in Chile have exhumed the remains of the poet, Pablo Neruda, who died in 1973, to establish whether he died of cancer or was poisoned on the orders of Chile's military ruler, General Augusto Pinochet. Pablo Neruda, a Nobel Prize winner, was a member of the Communist Party and a staunch supporter of ousted Chilean President Salvador Allende. In 2011, the authorities started investigating allegations by his personal assistant, Manuel Araya, that Neruda had been poisoned. Mr Araya says Neruda called him from hospital, and told him he was feeling sick after having been given an injection in the stomach. The Chilean Communist Party has alleged that Neruda did not exhibit any of the symptoms associated with the advanced prostate cancer he is reported to have died from. UNITed STATeS

Ms Clinton, 33, has recently taken on a more visible role at her father's Clinton Global Initiative University. She said her grandmother had encouraged her public service ambitions. She also said she would support her mother, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, if she decided to run for president a second time in 2016. France in big offensive against Islamists
French forces have launched a major offensive against militants in northern Mali, officials said on Monday. About 1,000 troops are sweeping through a river valley believed to be a logistics base for the armed Islamists near Gao in the last major Frenchled operation before France starts reducing its military presence.
The militants have been driven out of northern cities and towns since France intervened militarily in January. No Islamist fighters were encountered on the first day of the operation, launched at dawn on Sunday, a journalist travelling with the troops reported.

HMV saved in £50 million deal
Hilco confirmed on Friday morning that it had struck a £50 million deal with HMV's administrator Deloitte to rescue the company and secure the future of 2,500 jobs in Britain.
The deal will mean that 141 shops will be saved, including 25 that had already been earmarked for closure by Deloitte and all nine of the Fopp-branded shops will survive.
This means that just over half the HMV stores in existence before they called in the administrators will be retained and represents a much better future for the firm than many analysts had predicted.

Claims culture Surgery In causing concern The compensation culture in Britain is causing concern. It was confirmed recently that police officers have received almost £70 million in settlements over the past four years for injuries, many of them completely justified, but one officer has now made a claim against a victim of crime. WPC Kelly Jones is pursuing a claim against the owner of a
petrol filling station she went to following a suspected break-in. She tripped on a kerb and is claiming against the owner for failing to ensure she was “reasonably safe.”
There is concern that victims could be deterred from reporting crime if they feel they could be exposed to litigation.
Children's heart surgery at Leeds General Infirmary was stopped because of its own poor information about death rates, the head of NHS England has disclosed. A spokesperson said that information on the quality of surgery was of "very poor quality".
However, surgery at the unit is due to restart today, Wednesday, 11 days after it was first closed, after NHS England gave it the go ahead.
Public backs reform says the Chancellor British Chancellor George Osborne has insisted the public backs controversial government benefit reforms and has suggested his views are “in tune with what the great majority of the country think and experience in their everyday lives”. He said he was prepared to listen to constructive argument from those who
understood the system was too expensive and that the country simply could not afford it. But he condemned those who were campaigning against any change. “I don’t think that is a sensible contribution to the debate,” he said. While church groups and some charities have raised concerns at the changes, it appears that
even the opposition Labour Party has now accepted that there has to be change. Deputy leader Harriet Harman said her party is working on policy proposals for the next election that would mean that benefit payments to those out of work or on low incomes would vary according to their past contributions.
quotes: Margaret Thatcher Baroness Thatcher was seldom one to hold back her views. Here are some of the things she said – and some which were said about her.
Conviction Politician
"I love argument. I love debate. I don't expect anyone just to sit there and agree with me – that's not their job." 1980 "I am not a consensus politician. I'm a conviction politician." 1979 "Where there is discord, may we bring harmony. Where there is error, may we bring truth. Where there is doubt, may we bring faith. Where there is despair, may we bring hope." Quoting St Francis of Assisi, on her 1979 election victory. "To those waiting with bated breath for that favourite media catchphrase, the U-turn, I have only one thing to say. You turn if you want to. The lady's not for turning." Conservative party conference, 1980.
Speaking her mind
"Nobody would remember the Good Samaritan if he had only good intentions. He had money as well." 1980 "We had to fight the enemy without in the Falklands. We always have to be aware of the enemy within, which is much more difficult to fight and more dangerous to liberty." On the 1984-85 miners' strike. "There is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families." 1987
Woman in a Man’s World
"No woman in my time will be prime minister or foreign secretary – not the top jobs. Anyway, I wouldn't want to be prime minister. You have to give yourself 100% to the job." 1969, in opposition as Conservative MP for Finchley. "Any woman who understands the problems of running a home will be

On Europe
"I want my money back!" At the European Union summit in Dublin, 1980 "We have not successfully rolled back the frontiers of the state in Britain only to see them re-imposed at a European level, with a European superstate exercising a new dominance from Brussels." 1988 "No! No! No!" House of Commons 20th October 1990, the climax of an anti-European outburst that moved Geoffrey Howe to quit as deputy prime minister and deliver the resignation speech calling for her to be challenged for her job
The End of the Affair
"I fight on, I fight to win." 21st November 1990, after failing to win enough votes to avoid a second round in the Tory leadership contest. She resigned the next day "It's a funny old world." 27th November 1990, at her last cabinet meeting. "It was treachery with a smile on its face. Perhaps that was the worst thing of all." 1993, on the cabinet colleagues who had advised her to stand down.
Life after Office
"Home is where you come to when you've got nothing better to do." May 1991, six months after leaving Number 10.
What they said about her
"She has the eyes of Caligula but the mouth of Marilyn Monroe." French President Francois Mitterrand "She was always an attractive woman. She had not merely a film star's attractiveness; she could also behave like a film star when she chose to do so." Sir Bernard Ingham, her Downing Street press secretary "This woman is headstrong, obstinate and dangerously selfopinionated." ICI personnel department assessment, rejecting a job application from the then Margaret Roberts in 1948.

Malaga No 1 Gibraltar apes good for for car thefts another 300 years A report by the Linea Directa insurance company has put Malaga and the Costa del Sol at the head of the ranking for car thefts in Andalucia and at fourth place on a national level, behind Madrid, Toledo and Alicante.
The thieves' favourite vehicle is the Toyota Land Cruiser, because of the high demand for it in Eastern Europe and North Africa. At a national level, the preferred vehicles are the Seat León, the Volkswagen Golf and the BMW series 3, followed by the Seat Ibiza, the Volkswagen Passat, the Renault Megane, the Audi A-4 and three Ford

models: the old Escort, the Fiesta and the Focus.
Most car thefts take place in July, with the fewest in September, and the worst day for car thefts is Saturday, while car thieves apparently obey the Lord's command and rest on Sundays, according to the Linea Directa report. Nearly half the stolen cars are three to six years old. Many are stolen for their parts while others are used in other robberies. Last year, some 50,000 vehicles were stolen in Spain, of which just under 40 per cent were recovered.
The Rock will always be British as long as the monkeys are there – or so the old saying says. Winston Churchill apparently ordered their numbers to be topped up during WWII to keep the Rock safe from the Germans but he needn't have worried. Gibraltar's Barbary macaques are good for another 300 years at least, according to a recent study by Agustín Fuentes, of Notre Dame University in Indiana, Lisa Jones-Engel, of the National Primates Research Centre at Washington University, and Greg Marshall, of the National Geographic. Elsewhere, the numbers have dropped by up to 80 per cent in the last 30 years (10,000), but the Gib apes owe their continued survival because of their very isolation from the other colonies. They are also getting a lot of help from the Gibraltar government,
despite complaints about their rowdy behaviour and greed, because they are a tourist attraction, and that means money.
People have been asked not to feed the apes and to keep a healthy distance from them, to avoid bites. However, the study says

their bites are no more harmful than those of a cat. The study concludes that despite the fisheries and sovereignty issues that have plagued the Rock for years, there's a strong probability that the Barbary apes will be around to see how the situation unravels.

How do you like your bull? With the bullfighting season in Seville in full swing because of the April Feria, some 30 restaurants and bars around the Maestranza bullring are offering bull tail as the principal dish on their menus until April 21st. The promoters of this culinary treat told a local newspaper that bull meat is the most ecological meat there is. "The animals roam freely, eating natural food not feed full of chemicals," their spokesman said. They are also organising trips to the Herederos Conde de la Maza bull breeding ranch for €49, which includes a glass of wine, so that people can become better acquainted with the bulls.
One promoter is National Gastronomy Award winner Ismael Díaz Yubero who knows the world of bull fighting well
Stealing for weekend sprees
The Guardia Civil have detained eight men, all in their early twenties, who robbed private homes as well as shops in the Fuengirola, Mijas Costa areas on Thursdays, apparently to obtain funds for their Saturday nights out in bars in restaurants. Operation Jupiter came into being in January, when the Guardia noted a rash of robberies on Thursdays.
The modus operandi was to wait until just before closing time to hit a shop, dressed in ski masks and carrying knives and getting away with an average of €1,500 per hit. Robberies at private homes took place earlier in the day. The Guardia said the timing and MO were so consistent that they could only assume the thieves' idea was to have time to sell stolen objects on Friday to get money for their weekend sprees. Four of the detainees are in jail while the others were released with charges.
– his father was the chief veterinary at Madrid's famous Las Ventas ring.
Díaz Yubero said the consumption of bull meat should not be limited to bulls killed in the ring, whose tails end up on the restaurant plates. He said bulls that failed the bravery test and were not sent to the ring ended up in the abattoirs.
Now that fewer bulls go to the ring because small towns can't afford to buy them for their annual fiestas, and pressure from anti-bullfighting groups increases, he said an alternative source of income for the breeders could be to sell their meat on the open market, duly identified as such.
N
"The only part of the bull not suitable for eating is where the sword has entered its body," he said. The bullfighters are all for

the idea and will present a book of recipes in Madrid at the start of the San Isidro bullfights in May.
The interest in reassessing bull meat gastronomically goes beyond Seville and the bullfighting season. Dani Garcia already uses it in dishes at his two-Michelin star restaurant in Marbella, the Calima, and he has just launched what he calls the bullburger at his restaurant in New York, the Manzanilla in Manhattan. He said: "Forget horse meat, the latest culinary trend is bull meat."

Missing British woman found
The local Police have found a British woman reported as missing on March 31st. identified only as V.S., aged 58, she was found sitting down crying on the road between Mijas and Fuengirola, barefoot, and suffering from hypothermia. When the police found her last Friday, she told them she had been living in the street for a week without food or water. She was taken to hospital and when the police contacted her family, they said she suffered from depression. AlgArinEjo
Gandhi too difficult to spell
The Ayuntamiento of this small town in granada province has decided to change the name of one of its streets from Mahatma gandhi, because residents found it too difficult to spell. A spokesman said that as a result letters sent to residents were often not delivered because the name was misspelled. The street is in a new district where all the roads are named after nobel Prize winners. From now on, it will be called Avenida de la juventud. MAlAgA
Candle wax still on streets
The Easter Week candle droppings are still coating many streets along which the religious processions passed because of cuts in the number of street cleaners. A City council spokesman said that by now, all the wax should have been scraped up or removed with steam and water. He said the workers would be given another week to finish the job even if it meant working extra hours or on their days off.

Remembering Maggie
I
missed out completely on Margaret Thatcher's 11 years in office, having left the country to go to live in Venezuela in July 1977. However, I did have first-hand experience of the Falkland/Malvinas war. Needless to say, Venezuela backed Argentina to the hilt and for about six weeks, the headlines and photos on all the front pages of the national newspapers were about only one thing – that war. I almost jumped out of my skin one morning when I picked up the paper lying on my doorstep, thinking wearily "here we go again" only to find a huge photo of then President Luis Herrera Campins's head – not exactly the most handsome man in the world – staring out at me. “Aha”, I said, “the war's over.”
J
ust before it started, I had been contracted by the Latin American Economic System (SELA) to help its resident translator prepare hundreds of documents for its annual meeting in October that year, which had to be presented in Spanish, English and Brazilian Portuguese. After the war broke out, the powers-that-be cancelled the contract and in addition decided not to hire any English or American translators for the conference, a decision the resident translator, a Jamaican, was able to overturn after the war ended. But they didn't offer me the contract again, so in a way Maggie cost me a lot of money.
O
n a personal level, there was only one incident. Less than two weeks before the war ended a bank clerk said "Pity about the Malvinas" when she saw my nationality on the ID card I presented with a cheque to be cashed. Two weeks later, I was able to say to the same bank clerk "Pity about the Falklands." I wasn't given much hassle because most Venezuelans loathed the Argentinians and only supported them out of political correctness. When the war broke out, one Chilean friend called me to tell me "as a Latin American and a revolutionary (he was a Trotskyist) I have to support Argentina but I hope you British beat the **** out of them". I said "If I know Maggie she probably will."
I
n fact, the Chileans secretly helped the British by allowing their planes to land and refuel there, which is why Mrs Thatcher so visibly supported former dictator Agustin Pinochet when crusading Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon tried to have him extradited when he was
in Britain for medical reasons. They've been replaying the images of her visit to him at that time over and over on Spanish television just to show how right wing she was.
A
nd of course she was the main talking point on my favourite political chat show that night. The journalists on the programme all agreed that politicians with convictions as strong as Maggie's don't exist at the moment – in their opinion Angela Merkel is just playing the cards that she hopes will get her re-elected later this year. Once back in power, they agreed she might just do a U-turn, something Maggie would never have done. They also agreed that while they didn't particularly admire Maggie's political sentiments, they respected her courage for sticking to her ideas.
I
couldn't help thinking that Mariano Rajoy would love to have someone like Maggie in his government right now, even if she ended up unseating him. What would Maggie have made of the Mortgage Victims Platform, whose members are currently picketing the homes of Partido Popular politicians. The government has only recently asked the police to try to identify the people involved but as PP spokesman Esteban Gonzalez Pons (whose home is being picketed) said on Sunday, it's the same old people who have used any excuse in the past to cause mayhem and whose present cause just happens to be stopping the evictions.
H
owever, the national media invariably fail to point out, as Gonzalez Pons did, that the evictions started under Zapatero's Socialist government, which even went as far as passing the "express evictions law" which cut through a lot of the legal tape that the banks had to get through before they could get an eviction order. Where was the Mortgage Victims Platform then? Gonzalez Pons asked. Anywhere but demonstrating in the street against the evictions. That only started after the PP came to power. Meanwhile, it is the PP which is in the process of passing a law to protect the weakest members of society against evictions, while the Socialists recently admitted they should have done something similar when they were in power.
I
www.thenewsonline.es
was not a great admirer of Maggie, but I wish Rajoy would take a leaf out of her book when dealing with these nuisances.

I
t was a positive move but a dangerous one at the same time. Judge Jose Castro's decision to target Princess Cristina in the ongoing Noos Institute case is just one way of releasing the pressure that has been building in his courtroom ever since the name of the daughter of King Juan Carlos cropped up in the inquiry. It is also a crafty move on his part since lead anti-corruption prosecutor Pedro Horrach has said that he will appeal to a higher court Castro’s decision to call in Princess Cristina to testify. Horrach says he doesn’t believe there is enough evidence to tie the Infanta to any of her husband’s alleged illicit business dealings at Nóos. But the public pressure is there, fuelled in part by the daily late night gossip shows with journalists and commentators egging on Cristina’s prosecution.
W
hat pushed Judge Castro to decide to subpoena the princess on a preliminary allegation of using the royal family name to sidestep official administrative channels to win contracts for Nóos was a 2003 email that her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, sent asking her for her opinion on various letters he was sending out to prospective clients for the institute’s programmes. Urdangarin is accused of getting public money from the Balearics and Valencia regional governments to organise sports and tourism conferences and events, but prosecutors believe that his nonprofit entity inflated the prices and, with the help of his then partner Diego Torres, he diverted the funds to his private businesses. Torres has been giving batches of emails to the judge as part of his defence strategy while at same time suggesting that Princess Cristina had more of a role in her husband’s dealings than that of an innocent bystander.
T
he judge may be well aware that his decision to subpoena the Infanta will be overturned. But at the same time he is demonstrating that he is serving out fair justice regardless who the suspect or defendant may be. It is a tough decision but a sly one at that – Judge Castro knows that he will come under heavy fire if he just tries to sweep under the courtroom carpet evidence that raises more suspicion than doubts.
M
Three-fold loss
onday was a day of painful losses. First we were given the news of the death of
former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who passed away at the age of 87. Then just a few hours later Spain lost her long-time movie legend, Sara Montiel, when it was announced that that one-time international film star had also died at her home in Madrid the night before at the age of 85.
B
efore the day was over, word came from across the Atlantic about the passing of Annette Funicello, one of the original Mickey Mouse Mouseketeers and beloved 1960s beach bikini cutie, who had been suffering for more than 25 years from multiple sclerosis. She was 70. Thatcher’s passing, of course, captured the most headlines as newspapers around the world debated how this conservative figure – one of the most important leaders of the second part of the 20th century – changed Britain, either for the better or worse.
R
egardless whether or not you sided with Thatcher’s reformist policies she, along with US President Ronald Reagan, forged a new direction for the world’s democratic economies – one that is still being followed today. “Sarita” Montiel, on another stage, became Spain’s first major international film star with a career that was spawned in Mexico and extended to Hollywood where she made four movies, including the 1954 classic “Vera Cruz” with Gary Cooper.
I
n Spain she was known for her tempestuous character and daringly forward manner. Funicello captured millions of little boy’s hearts in the 1950s when she and a score of other young kids were selected by Walt Disney for his new television production, The Mickey Mouse Club. Those infatuated boys across the United States would grow up with her and retain their crush as the little Italian-American girl became “the queen of teen” in scores of beach blanket films alongside her long-time screen beau, Frankie Avalon. Her battle with multiple sclerosis made the public more aware of this dreadful disease. Three great ladies from three great countries, all remarkable in their own way, have departed but the impressions they have left will forever remain with us.

Grand National jockey in fall
The risks associated with horse racing were brought sharply into focus over the weekend when Grand National winning jockey Ryan Mania was hospitalised after a fall at Hexham on Sunday. The 23-year-old won Britain’s big race, The Grand National at Aintree on Saturday, on the Sue Smith trained Aurora’s Encore, but he wasn’t so lucky on Sunday when his horse went down on the final circuit.
Mania, who was airlifted from the racecourse by helicopter, is understood to have received a kick between the shoulder blades as well as neck and back injuries, but he was described as stable and suggested on Twitter he was expecting to leave hospital following precautionary scans. written by Vic Gardner
Still missing
Detectives, who are still looking for missing British man Robert Golden, have launched a website to hopefully assist them with their enquiries – the website www.findrobert.com has more details and appeals in both English and Spanish.
Robert Golden from Shorham was last seen in Sevilla when he arrived from England by plane for a holiday on the 5th November 2012 but failed to return on the 23rd. There have been four possible sightings since then, but no progress with the search. His family continue to remain very concerned for his welfare. Very fond of walking and hiking Robert is
considered to be very approachable and friendly.

Ciomijas Training Hotel re-opens The educational hotel Ciomijas in La Cala de Mijas, which has been closed for the last four months for renovations and updates, re-opened on Thursday last week with a lunch for 100 guests. The introductory event – to show off the skills of the Ciomijas – was organized by Ciomijas in conjunction with the Mijas Foreign Residents Department, (pictured) who also took the opportunity to meet up with members of the press and others who regularly
support Mijas town hall with their many activities and events.
This is no ordinary hotel. The Ciomijas is a combined effort between the Junta de Andalucía, MS Hotels, GDT Training and the Ayuntamiento the Mijas. It provides education and training with practical applications to students wanting to enter into the professional world of tourism, Andalucía's leading industry. Behind the
scenes are some of the best equipped and most up-todate specialized kitchens and facilities in Spain.
The Ciomijas complex (Centro Andaluz de Formación Integral de las Industrias del Ocio) contains a hotel with modern facilities and 60 en-suite tastefully designed good size double bedrooms sleeping over 120 guests. The El Jardín de la Cala Restaurant within the complex can accommodate up to 100
diners and in addition to this, there are other rooms and extensive conference facilities, plus on-site residential accommodation for the students.
The El Jardín de la Cala Restaurant is open to the public from Monday to Thursday between 1.30 and 3.30 pm and serves a 3-course set menu del día lunch for 15 Euros. On Saturday and Sunday there is a more expansive à la carte menu, the food and service being prepared and provided by the students. On Fridays there is an opportunity to enjoy various Ciomijas tasting events. This Friday 12th April starting at 6.00 pm there is a dessert tasting with wine pairing – showing the delights of combining seven different desserts
with four appropriate wines – at 20 Euros per person or, just for the dessert tasting, 12 Euros. The impressive cakes and pastries to be sampled are created by pastry chef Antonio Rodríguez and his team of trainee chefs. The sweet toothed amongst you should note these and other cakes are available to order and with each providing 10 to 12 portions they are especially suitable for home parties. Dial M For Murder was written by Frederick Knott in 1952. He went to Oundle School and Cambridge University to study law. He was clearly set to have a very conventional life but he then had an idea. He didn't really want to write but saw it as a means to an end of having a good life. He focused on women who innocently become the victims of sinister plots. Although how innocent the 'heroine' of 'Dial M For Murder' is can be debated. He tucked himself away for eighteen months in the garden shed at his parents' house where his mother would leave his meals on a tray by the door. When he emerged with his play it was met with indifference and it took many attempts before the BBC put it on in 1952. A theatre producer with an empty theatre saw it and thought it might make a 'filler'. It was an instant hit and transferred to Broadway where it was a hit again. He sold the film rights to Alexander Korda for £1000 and Korda sold them to Hollywood for £175,000, an enormous sum then. 'Dial M For Murder' is on this week at the Salon Varietes. It has been described as a romping plot, fuelled by jealousy, resentment and greed with a gloriously slimy villain. Frederick Knott's classic is
directed here by Catrina Helsby. See a dark, dangerous, brilliant and erotic tale of betrayal, passion and murder. You will see why it was a perfect choice for Alfred Hitchcock to make into a great film. And continues to be chosen by film, TV and theatre directors.

Twilight Saga author Stephanie Meyer has created another epic love story in The Host, in which an unseen enemy threatens mankind and will love be powerful enough to prevail.
Those with long memories might find that the plot sounds more than a little similar to Invasion of the Body Snatchers (but The Host is unlikely to stake a claim to iconic status in the way that
movie does) or the 1960s TV series The Invaders, starring Roy Thinnes.
Earth is occupied by benign extra-terrestrials who erase the minds of their human hosts, repair the environment, bring peace, eradicate the need to make money and generally create a Utopia. So some might say that’s not a bad place to be. But of course there is a group of humans left to

fight the good fight and resist the alien invasion. Ronan plays the double role of Melanie Stryder and The Wanderer, the alien creature which has attached itself to Melanie’s brain. Here we have two souls competing for the same body and locked in argument over the future. Melanie is prepared to struggle to protect the people she loves – Jared (Max Irons), brother
Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and her Uncle Jeb (Hurt) who are part of one of the remaining resistance groups. Will love conquer all?
The Host has received underwhelming critical acclaim so don’t expect another Twilight mega hit, but it has performed OK at the box office so if you are into that sort of thing it’s worth a bag of popcorn.

on’t ask me why, but I decided to watch “The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia”. I knew it was going to be bad, just not that bad. Back in 2009 I saw “Haunting in Connecticut” and to be honest, I don’t remember that much about it. I recall one or two creepy scenes, but nothing to give me nightmares. The main thing I do remember was all the mummified bodies falling out of the walls towards the end of the film, which made me think that it wasn’t really based on a true story at all – apart from the fact that a family moved into a house in Connecticut.
is running around talking to a mysterious Mr. Gordy (in a slightly reminiscent “Pete the finger” manner (The Shining)) . Then the family discover that their house used to be owned by a “stationmaster” – who used to help the slaves escape and would hide them – but apparently he wasn’t helping them at all, he was murdering them. And Mr. Gordy, as far as I could understand, was a nice ghost that helped the family.

I
S
o, as you can imagine, with a title like “Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghost of Georgia”, you know it’s not going to be good, even more so, when it’s not even set in Connecticut, yes, you’ve guessed it, it’s set in Georgia and has nothing to do with the first film. Normally, when I watch these horror films, I expect to be disappointed, however this managed to exceed my expectations. ver since the “Blair Witch Project”, most horror films are based on a true story. Yeah right, so was “The Shining”! Hollywood don’t seem to understand that making it “based” on a true story doesn’t make it any scarier. Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” was as true to the book, as “Haunting in Connecticut 2” was a true story.
T
with the President's oddly plebeian arrangements, Daisy learns that there is far more to Roosevelt's life than she realized.
he story, (to the best of my knowledge) is about a family that moves to a “haunted” house/ plantation (not a plantation house) in Georgia. The mother and her sister both have the “gift” and are surprised to find out that the daughter also has it, so the little girl
W
ell, here is what I have to say about the film. It was 100 minutes too long. The little girl is ugly and a bad actress, none of the characters is likable, the story is unbelievable and badly told. Everyone is really wooden in it, the dialogue is stilted, it’s like the director was 15 and had seen two horror films, and said “Oh, let’s do this, this is scary.” All the supposed jumpy bits, weren’t jumpy they were predictable and lame, the key to giving your audience a darn good fright is timing!
’m not one for special effects myself, but they can really add to a film. This film, however didn’t seem to have any, it seems that their budget only allowed them a box of maggots and some cockroaches. Every time something dramatic happened, there were the maggots and roaches – oh, and some sawdust.
U
nfortunately, this is not the end of the bad new. Oh yes, there is more, apparently they are putting together a third part! And, this one won’t be set in Connecticut either, it’s going to be “Haunting in New York”, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be set in New York.

You are ignited by a fresh charge this week giving you a true sense of purpose as you plan and then direct the next phase of your life. You will feel great desire and longing that will make you want to rush into something. The things is you are already ahead of the game and you will make no further advancements by taking chances. Trust and believe in yourself and your own abilities and by the weekend more of the picture will be revealed. Your front line focus right now is basic survival and all that this entails. On one hand you are being shown how to surrender to those things you cannot control and to simply let go and make room for more to materialise. On the other hand the universe requires you to meet it halfway and needs you to back up your claims, words and promises with rock solid actions. Others need to know you are committed and dedicated then they will line up behind you. If you are feeling burned out and emotionally finished with the predictable and the mundane then there is some good news on the horizon – an old process is finally coming to a close. New cycles that occur are free from any baggage from the past, the slate is clean. This is a time to stand tall and put your ideas, dreams and passions into the mix, speak up and be forthright, the world is waiting to hear your genius. You need to take charge and direct where a current path is going, you cannot do it on your own, others need to know that you are looking out for them as well. The problem is that right about now, matters are beyond your ability to control and when that happens, history shows us the best course of action is to make sure we do whatever we can to protect what we have and what we will need in the future. If you know you are going to have a power cut – make sure you have a generator. The past is in the past now and failures and disappointments that occurred back then need to be left back there, turn away from any negativity, even this cloud has its silver lining. Something will make absolute sense soon. You have endured some crazy moments lately but with a little faith and trust in a current process there could be more harmony and compatibility between you and another person than you realise. Try not to rush things into happening as with a little more patience you will have the answer you are looking for, in fact you are days away from an answer to a perplexing question. Your intuition is clamouring to get through the chattering of your mind – eventually it will bubble up from the depths and find its way into your consciousness. Love and romance are highlighted as passions run high and you will discover something enlightening about your partner.

A chemical found in red meat helps explain why eating too much steak, mince and bacon is bad for the heart, according to US researchers whose recent study showed that carnitine in red meat was broken down by bacteria in the gut.
This kicked off a chain of events that resulted in higher levels of cholesterol and an increased risk of heart disease. Saturated fat and the way processed meat is preserved are thought to contribute to
heart problems but experts believed this was not the whole story. The US researchers said: "The cholesterol and saturated fat content of lean red meat is not that high, so there had to be something else contributing to increases in cardiovascular risk."
Experiments on mice and people showed that bacteria in the gut could eat carnitine, which was broken down into a gas, and later converted in the liver to a chemical called
TMAO. In the study, TMAO was strongly linked with the build-up of fatty deposits in blood vessels, which can lead to heart disease and death. The researchers said TMAO was often ignored: "It may be a waste product but it is significantly influencing cholesterol metabolism and the net effect leads to an accumulation of cholesterol." They said their findings raised the idea of using a probiotic yogurt to change the balance of bacteria in the gut.
Reducing the number of bacteria that feed on carnitine would in theory reduce the health risks of red meat. But British dieticians feel there is a potential risk from taking L-carnitine, lecithin, choline or betaine supplements in an attempt to ward off nnnncognitive decline or improve fat metabolism: "If the evidence of this study is confirmed these supplements would do more to damage arteries than provide health benefits."
'Absurd' drug laws hinder research Former government drugs adviser Professor David Nutt has said "absurd" laws dealing with magic mushrooms, ecstasy and cannabis are hindering medical research. He said he has funding to research the use of the chemical psilocybin – found in fungi known as "magic mushrooms" to treat depression but "insane" regulations mean he cannot get hold of the drug.
Earlier research at Imperial College London showed that injections of psilocybin could calm a region of the brain which is overactive in depression. The group is now trying to conduct a clinical trial to test psilocybin which as a Class A drug is illegal in the UK as a treatment. The UK's Medical Research Council has given Prof Nutt's lab a £550,000 grant to test the idea – in 30 patients who have not
responded to at least two other therapies. They have also been given ethical approval.
However, there are more stringent regulations for testing the drug as a treatment than in earlier experiments. As a potential medicine it must meet Good Manufacturing Practice requirements set out by the EU. "The tests have not started yet because the
big problem is getting hold of the drug," said Prof Nutt. He said finding a company to provide a clinical-grade psilocybin had "yet proved impossible" as none was prepared to "go through the regulatory hoops". It is not the first time Prof Nutt has been at odds with government policy. He was sacked as an adviser over views that ecstasy and LSD were less harmful than alcohol.

regulation were generated entirely during an embryo's development in the womb and could not be altered, but their discovery of these tanycytes, which act like stem cells, in the brains of young and adult rodents shows that appetite can be modified.
They said their discovery could eventually offer a permanent solution for tackling obesity – but it would take up to five or 10 years to translate the findings into humans. These results add “another piece to the jigsaw” of a sustained solution to obesity by focusing on how appetite is controlled in the brain.

New cancer found when he fractured his hip in December last year
Pulitzer film critic Roger Ebert taking time out
… but the “most powerful pundit in America” vows to write about his illness
Pulitzer prize winning American film critic Roger Ebert has announced that the thyroid and salivary gland cancer that he beat in 2002 and 2003 leaving him unable to speak or eat has returned and he will be taking a “leave of presence” from his writing and scaling back his workload while he undergoes radiotherapy. This new bout was discovered by doctors after he fractured his hip at the end of last year. "The 'painful fracture' that made it difficult for me to walk has recently been revealed to
be a cancer," Ebert said, giving no further details about the type of cancer or diagnosis.
He added: "I am not going away. My intent is to continue to write selected reviews ... What's more, I'll be able at last to do what I've always fantasized about doing: reviewing only the movies I want to review," saying also that he intended to write about his illness. Chicago resident Ebert, whose reviews are syndicated to more than 200 newspapers, has been reviewing films for the Chicago
Sun-Times since 1967. He won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1975. He gained national prominence with the late Gene Siskel on the television show "At the Movies with Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert," coining the phrase "Two Thumbs Up," until Siskel's death in 1999. He later teamed up with critic Richard Roeper but quit for health reasons.
Forbes dubbed Ebert the most powerful pundit in America in 2007.

The Queen gets an honourary BAFTA The Queen has been hailed the "most memorable Bond girl yet" as she was honoured by stars of stage, screen and television at a glittering reception. The reception, held in the royal residence's lavish state apartments, recognised those involved with British films and the supporting creative industries.
Former award-winning television documentary director, now chief executive of the independent television production company Mentorn Media and Bafta Chairman, highlighted the monarch's support for British film and television. John Willis paid tribute to the Queen – and drew laughter from the audience as he referred to her famous cameo role alongside James Bond last year. Her appearing to parachute jump into the stadium with 007 was widely considered a
highlight of the London Olympics opening ceremony. "The Queen has been patron of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund and the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund – for which money is raised by Royal Film Performances – since 1952, so for more than 60 years, and visited countless industry organisations, shining a light on the work that we all do and lending her tireless support to our efforts." Mr Willis praised the Queen's support for the industry, adding: "More recently Her Majesty the Queen starred at the London Olympics as the most memorable Bond girl yet. I am delighted that this evening has given us the opportunity to give something back. I have the great honour to announce that we are to present Her Majesty with an honorary Bafta today, in recognition
of her outstanding patronage of the film and television industries. We should be proud of our industry. The people here this evening represent a vast variety of skills and ground breaking innovation; they have entertained and informed a generation and inspired generations to come."
Sir Kenneth kept up the theme of the Queen's unexpected appearance at London 2012's opening night before presenting her with her honorary Bafta in recognition of a lñifetime’s support of the industry. To laughter from those gathered at the Windsor Castle reception, he told the Queen: "...Your sensational appearance at the opening ceremony of last year's Olympics was especially memorable. So much so that several of my colleagues here tonight want you to know that should you wish to take it

further into the world of British films that they have a number of scripts with them here this evening,” adding: "I have to warn you, Your Majesty, not all of these films are fully financed."
Finally 007 – who was not at the event – was mentioned: "Of course we are happy to deal directly with your agent so Daniel Craig is here this evening." Acclaimed actor John Hurt said he enjoyed the Queen's starring role in the opening ceremony: "It was a bit of good fun, I thought so – good on her."
Among the 300 guests were actors, directors, writers, producers, costume and set designers, publicists and critics. They included Homeland star Damian Lewis who said: "The arts and film industry punch above their weight with little funding. Our arts in this country and theatre
and film and TV are some of our greatest exports, to have that recognised by your monarch is important."
Hollywood supremo George Lucas, who had flown in especially for the Windsor Castle reception, praised Britain for backing its film industry.

Susan James I was wondering if there is anything I can do about a situation that has come up in the La Carreta area of Coin. Over recent months one of the pathways has been blocked at the bottom of the hill by someone who grazes sheep there. Many people use the area for walking their dogs or riding horses and, as far as I know, the land is not actually owned by anyone alive. It leads directly down to the river. He also ploughs the land making it very difficult to walk over and plants seed for his animals food every year. I assume he’s doing it to
I am writing to you to complain about something that has been going on for months now. The Barclays Bank cash machine on Calypso has been working intermittently for ages and when I, and many others have been into the branch about this, we have been told that they know there’s a fault but the bank “cannot afford” to replace it. Utter poppycock! The banks charge

take over the land that is a fairly large piece and would be worth quite a lot of money should the area become urbanisable. This same chap blocked the top pathway before and was told to take down the cable he had put across the path. Over the last couple of weeks, the pathway that runs along the side of the river in this same area – that should be open to everyone – has also been blocked. This time there a lot of beehives have been put directly onto the path. A notice “Peligro Abejas” has been put up on the river path but not at the

bottom of the hill so we can negotiate round the exit that has already been blocked and some people out walking their dogs last week got very badly stung by the bees as they had not seen any notices. What I want to know from your readers is a) can this chap just get a digger and pile half a ton of earth up high to block the pathway that we all use and b) is it legal to put bee hives directly on a public path? I would be most grateful for any input from you as something really needs to be done, legally, so that we can all once again enjoy the area.

incredibly high interest rates (some as high as 18%) if you have an overdraft with them and they had billions from the government not that long ago that they are not lending out to keep small businesses going, and to get a mortgage out of them is like pulling hen’s teeth so what on earth are they talking about? The next branch of Barclays is a fair trot for those of us who are retired and it doesn’t have a cash machine anyway. So, my options are to go and queue up inside the bank – that has one teller working while the others appear to have a chat – or get my car out and use precious petrol driving to the next branch that does have a cash machine or
Brian Cox In answer to Mary Orr (letters page March 27th) who was asking when better weather was going to arrive, all I can say is that last weekend was absolutely glorious and long may it last! use another bank’s machine locally that is going to charge me! So, come on Barclays, it’s about time you showed your loyal customers some respect and fix or replace the flippin’ machine!
Editor says: Yes, this is incredibly frustrating and you’d think with all the money they charge their customers they could easily afford a new machine. Sure, they cost thousands but, let’s face it, they’ve had enough of ours and the government’s money to afford it. The Cajamar machine between Fuengirola and Los Boliches has exactly the same problem and it’s rare that it works meaning you have to go a long way to find another.
Marbella faces. A bit of sunshine makes all the difference to the way people feel and, with the “economic crisis” will surely make us think of forgetting what the media are telling us and go out to the bars and restaurants for a cool drink, or buy some summer clothes and help to get the economy going again. Let’s hope!

Saturn, the Lord of the Rings
S
This month will be the best time this year to spot Saturn and its beautiful rings. aturn comes into opposition on 28th of April meaning it will be on the opposite side to the Sun from us and therefore at its closest point to the Earth at almost 840 million miles away. It rises at sunset, is due south at midnight and sets again at sunrise. But unfortunately this year it won’t rise very high above the southern horizon so you’ll need a clear unobstructed view to see it properly.
T
he easiest way to find Saturn is to locate The Plough. At the moment The Plough is standing upright with its ‘handle’ pointing down toward the horizon. Follow the curve of the handle downwards until you come to the bright red coloured star Arcturus. Continue the line further on again until you reach another bright star Spica. Saturn is just below Spica shining a little brighter and yellow in colour.
S
aturn was the first thing I ever saw through a neighbour’s telescope when I was a boy and from that moment I was hooked, I was amazed that I really could see the rings system – something I had only read about before. Even with binoculars you will be able to make out that there is something odd about the shape of Saturn and a small telescope will allow you to see the rings clearly.
T
he rings were first spotted by Galileo in 1610 but because his telescope was too small to resolve them properly he thought that they must be two moons either side of Saturn. It was not until 1675 that a Dutch astronomer called Christian Huygens, using a more powerful telescope, realised that they were in fact rings circling the planet.
D
ue to the tilt of Saturn's alignment with respect to the plane of the solar system, the view of the rings as seen by us changes as it orbits the Sun every 29½ years. And so twice during each orbit they appear edge on to us and so can hardly be seen. The last time this happened was in 2009 but now four years on they are opening out again, and are currently at a wider view from our line of sight. The rings will continue to open out until 2017 when they will be at their most fully open, after that they’ll gradually begin to narrow again until in 2025 when they will once again disappear edge on to us again.
T
he rings begin at about 4,000 miles above Saturn’s equator and continue out to about 75,000 miles
and while they may appear to be very wide they are actually extremely narrow – less than about 20 metres in thickness. They are made from billions of tiny pieces of rock and ice that were probably once a moon of Saturn that either got ripped apart by Saturn’s gravity or else collided with another moon and was shattered into pieces ranging from dust size to about 10 metres. The resulting debris continues to orbit around Saturn being shepherded into place by several of Saturn’s 63 other moons.
T
he largest of Saturn’s moons is called Titan and is the second biggest moon in the Solar System – only being beaten by Jupiter’s moon Ganymede – actually being bigger than the planet Mercury. Titan can easily be seen through a telescope appearing as a tiny ‘star’ in line with Saturn’s equator. But while Saturn may have a plethora of moons they are only tiny with most of them being less than 50 miles in diameter.
L
ike Jupiter, Saturn is a gas giant. It has no rocky surface and is made mainly from hydrogen and helium gas. The pressure towards the centre of Saturn has caused the gas to turn into a solid. When we look at Saturn what we see is only the tops of the clouds and these clouds cause bands similar to Jupiter’s that wrap around the planet parallel to the equator.
T
here have been four probes that have visited Saturn. The first was in 1979 when NASA’s Pioneer 11 flew to within 12,000 miles of the cloud tops. In 1981 and 1982 Voyager’s 1 & 2 made very close fly-bys sending back the first high resolution images of the planet, its rings and several of its moons. Then in 2004 the CassiniHuygens probe went into orbit around Saturn and has continued to send back incredible images of this most beautiful planet called Saturn.

Team of the week is Bunkers Rangers for winning in dramatic fashion against Tonys Tds to win League Division 1. The game was won in the final family game and surely the player of the week goes to Adrian Doyle of Bunkers for finishing a dramatic 117 checkout, to not only win the match but to win the title for the very first time. As a draw was not enough for the Rangers, then the pressure must have been immense as they managed to beat Tonys for the second time this season and prove themselves to be the best team in the league this year. Well done to you all at Bunkers, deserved and well respected champions 2013. Good Luck to everyone for the April Cup Finals

The other story of the race was the welcome return to some proper racing by ‘The Doctor’, Rossi was brilliant in this his first race since returning to the Yamaha team. He passed Cal Crutchlow early on but was then re-taken by Crutchlow who went on to shadow Pedrosa and Marquez for most of the race, always right behind them until the straight, when they pulled away again only for Cal to pull them back surprisingly quickly through the turns.
Rossi by now had dropped back to seventh but fought back from three seconds adrift to firstly get past Crutchlow, who left it too late to brake in his attempt to keep Rossi behind and

ran off into the kitty litter, and then Rossi passed Pedrosa who was struggling with his tyres. A battle then ensued between Rossi and Marquez, whose aggressive riding style and determination has long impressed Rossi. The rookie re-passed the Yamaha rider on the penultimate lap. But seven time MotoGP title winner Rossi used all his experience to get back in front and then contain the young Spaniard by 0.2s. Crutchlow managed to retain his fifth place and was the top satellite rider, but was rightly frustrated at not being on the podium after qualifying in second spot. His rookie team -mate and fellow Brit Bradley Smith crashed out. By Mike Kerrigan

Goal line technology in the Premiership

The Football Association expects goal-line technology (GLT) to be adopted by Premier League clubs this week. Last week Fifa awarded German firm GoalControl the contract to supply GLT to this summer's Confederations Cup. Premier League clubs meet on Thursday with GLT set to be agreed for next season, while the FA wishes to install the technology at Wembley. "I always thought it was an ideal piece of technology to allow into the game," said FA general secretary Alex Horne.

Málaga’s manager Pellegrini had made eight changes from Wednesday’s side as he looked to rest all Málaga’s key players. Kameni in goal looked shaky on an early Sociedad attack and a warning sign went out on
22 minutes as Griezmann struck the bar with a good shot. On 21 minutes a Sociedad corner was not dealt with, Bergara’s header was saved but the rebound was ably put in by Vela from close range.
Two minutes later the Málaga defence failed to clear a cross and the ball fell to De la Bella 30 yards out who hammered the ball into the bottom corner. On the half hour Sociedad punished some more bad defending, this time by Sanchez letting in
Griezmann who slotted past Kameni to make it three nil.
Morales gave Málaga some hope with a good strike from the edge of the box finding the net on the stroke of half time. More bad defending by Sanchez let in Martinez for a free header from a corner to score Sociedad’s fourth on 51 minutes. Santa Cruz headed home with 20 minutes to go but Málaga offered little for the rest of the game and will have to do a lot better
on Tuesday night if they have any chance of making the semi-finals of the Champions League. Sociedad’s David Ramos
Next league game is on Saturday night, 10pm, against Osuna. Report by Scott Forbes

When should we shove all our chips into the middle? Of course if you’re the short stack in a tournament with about 10 big blinds you have to fold or shove because to flat call or a standard raise will mean you don't have fold equity so just push and pray. However this week let’s look at our cash. Ring game at say 25c/50c blinds – the dynamics of a table at micro limits is different, as at this level players tend to play loose and over-rate their hand so we need to play tighter at this level to win long term. So when do we shove, of course when we have the nuts and feel our opponent has a strong hand and is likely to call, he may see it as a bluff because if you had the nuts he would expect a value bet. We may also consider jamming the pot if we have a set and your opponent has bet into you on a flush or straight drawing board. If they are going to out draw you make them pay and it's much harder to call an all in on a draw. In some hands when we have top pair, even a pair with some aggressive players, plus the nut flush draw

and your being bet into a shove here can end the hand there and then. Should they call with a better hand we do have outs and are in a coin flip situation which I don't mind. I do however feel that shoving with a wired pair after the flop at this level is not the best play, if we have AA/KK we want to win the maximum, so jamming will scare off the action. Of course pre flop we are looking to get our chips in the middle with these hands but only go all in to 3 and 4 bets. If the board has a flush or straight which could beat us, slow down, and if you feel your beat muck any pair don't let yourself get married to any single pair on a dangerous board. Lastly you have had a few out draws and are feeling a little on tilt, every time you raise the same player calls you and out draws on the river, in this situation don't be tempted to shove the flop because you have hit a pair. If he bets into you fire back with a standard 3 bet – do not shove all in, if he 4 bets lay it down, remember he is running good and you’re not, chances are he has out drawn you again.
