FBI takes over “potential terrorist inquiry in Boston

The FBI has taken over coordination of what it described as a "potential terrorist inquiry" into the two explosions near the finishing line of the Boston Marathon on Monday that left three people dead and at least 140 injured. Officials said at least 17 people are critically wounded, and the injuries several include amputations.

At an initial news conference, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said officers are working around the clock and all leave has been cancelled. He said the authorities had received

"no specific intelligence that anything was going to happen", and urged people to stay indoors and not congregate in large groups.

A search thought to be related to the inquiry was under way at a flat in a Boston suburb, Boston media reported. Police said a search warrant was issued on Monday in the Revere district but provided no further details. In a televised address, President Barack Obama vowed to bring those behind the attack to justice: "We will find out who did this. We'll find out why they did this. Any

responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice."

The White House and security experts are being cautious as to whether domestic terrorist groups or jihadists were behind the attacks. The device itself is thought to be fairly crude and there is a very clear focus on finding the evidence rather than speculating.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said Boston would be "open" on Tuesday but that there would be "a heightened law

At last it would appear that Spring has arrived - at least it has here in Andalucia. The weather has been in the mid-seventies during the day with a light breeze and, wouldn’t it be nice if it could be like this all year round instead of freezing or wet in the winter and too hot to move in the summer? Still, we wouldn’t be British if we couldn’t moan about the weather! At least we now have aircon in our office. Last summer we were practically unable to breathe (we have no windows that we can open and the whole front of the place is sheet glass so you can imagine how hot it was) and the temperature went down to +5ºC over the winter with us all working in ski gear with fingerless gloves so that we could carry on typing... dedication to getting The News out each week or what?! Pope receives Universities forced Rajoy to help students Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Monday became the first European leader to be received by Pope Francis in the Vatican. It is not known what they discussed during their private 24-minute meeting, but Rajoy had come well prepared.

His government has made no cuts to the annual amount it gives to the Church to cover services and salaries (€248 million this year), and has eliminated the previous Socialist administration’s Civic Education classes in schools, condemned by the Spanish church as antireligion. Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon has plans to reform the abortion law – which is anathema to the Church –

in order to introduce stricter limitations but has no plans to change the same-sex marriage law, another of the Church's pet hates. After the meeting with the Pope, Rajoy presented him with a replica edition of De aetatibus mundi, written by Francisco de Holanda in 1500 and made for King Philip II, as well as a Spain national soccer team shirt, signed by all the players. Rajoy is the fifth world leader to meet Pope Francis since his inauguration in March. The pontiff has already held audiences with Argentinean President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff, and the prime ministers of Tanzania and Mozambique.

The number of university students unable to pay for their courses has risen sharply since the current recession began. Fees have gone up by as much as 67 per cent in some regions, while the requisites for receiving state aid have been tightened. In addition, unemployed parents are unable to fund their children's studies. To avoid losing students,

universities across the country have set up emergency funds for those unable to pay fees, transport or materials, and some have even introduced a coupon system in their canteens.

Burgos University's deputy rector René Jesús Payo, where €120,000 has been set aside for needy students, said: "The idea is that no student should

have to drop out of a course because of a lack of resources." Silvia Carrasco, deputy rector at Barcelona's Universidad Autónoma (UAB), where a €320,000 fund already benefits 150 students, said: "We know it is a sticking plaster and the authorities need to take action, but something needed to be done, and the universities are closest to the students."

'Worst fire in 30 yrs' Judges join forces leaves 71 homeless against evictions Until recently, individual judges had been thinking up creative ways to stop evictions at the 11th hour, but last month they received valuable support from a European Union ruling that said Spain’s mortgage law is unfair to consumers because it does not let judges temporarily halt evictions to investigate claims of abusive contract clauses. The local authorities have described a fire that broke out in the oldest part of Bermeo in the Basque Country early last Thursday as the “most serious and dramatic to have been seen in the Vizcaya province in the last 30 years”.

The blaze started in one of the quarter’s wooden houses in an area of the town declared of Cultural

Heritage Interest by the Basque government. Strong winds fanned the flames which rapidly engulfed 10 nearby buildings, forcing the authorities to evacuate 71 people. No injuries were reported. Heavy rain in the afternoon helped 40 firefighters to bring the blaze under control, which was achieved by the evening. Local hotels and

homeowners opened their doors for the people affected – who make up 35 families – until the provincial government made furnished accommodation available for them.

Four of the buildings collapsed as a result of the fire and Bermeo Mayor Josu Unanue said three more will probably have to be demolished.

The government will now have to change the law to include this option, which will probably not happen until next month. Meanwhile, the country's

judges decided to act.

Last week, judges in Barcelona agreed that people facing eviction are to be told about the option of opposing the procedure on grounds of abusive clauses. Judges in Mallorca made this option available just five days after the EU ruling.

The fastest to act were the judges in Bilbao, who began stopping evictions last November. Judges in Valencia and Malaga have now joined the antieviction movement. One judge, who declined to be

named, told the El Pais newspaper: “We are busy and worried. The nice thing is there is a lot of internal debate going on, which is a fascinating thing to any jurist.”

Another judge in Santander said: “We are getting organised until we get a norm that complies with European legislation. We are looking for provisional solutions. The Spanish lawmakers did not do their homework and they have placed us in this strange situation.”

Calle Thatcher stirs things up

The jokers are saying that the street to be named after Margaret Thatcher in Madrid will bear signs banning Uturns and ordering drivers to stay on the right.

The suggestion of naming a calle, paseo or avenida after the former British prime minister comes from the arts department of PP mayor Ana Botella’s City Hall team and is expected to be approved on April 24th. Other candidates to have a Madrid street named for them are the actress, Sara Montiel, and the writer, Jose Luis Sampedro, both

of whom also died this week. The proposals will be approved by the council assembly on April 24th. The leader of the Socialist Party on the city council, Jaime Lissavetzky, disapproves of the idea because the Iron Lady "did not live in Madrid”.

Angel Pérez of the United Left said there were other figures of greater historical importance who had not been honoured in this way. The Union, Progress and Democracy party (UP&D) was undecided about

supporting the creation of Calle Thatcher, pointing out that the former British PM “lacked any link” with the capital, while a spokesman expressed concern about what he called the “politicisation of the street map.”

Blueprint for an independent Catalonia Catalan regional premier Artur Mas has commissioned a panel of experts to design a blueprint for a future independent state.

The tasks of the Advisory Council for National Transition include drawing up legal and political route maps for a referendum on selfdetermination, and all

aspects pertaining to the creation of regional military force, dual nationality, energy supply, taxes, Social Security, state debt and the nation’s museums. One of the first steps for the 14-member panel is to formulate a proposal for the dividing of assets and debts between Catalonia and the Spanish state.

Catalan nationalists argue that if the region has to assume some of the national debt, it should also receive some of its national heritage, including buildings and museums.

“If we have to pay part of the debt, we should also get part of the Prado,” they claim.

The Partido Popular's general secretary and regional premier of Castilla-La Mancha, María Dolores de Cospedal, told a party rally on Saturday that protests by antiforeclosure activists outside politicians’ homes are "pure Nazism", saying they reflect the same totalitarian spirit seen in Europe in the 1930s. Socialist Party spokesman Elena Valenzuela accused Cospedales of adding "fuel to the fire".

The protests, led by the Mortgage Victims Platform which is pushing for mortgage law reform, are called "escraches", a term used to describe protesters in Argentina who gathered outside the homes of known torturers and leaders of the military dictatorship in Argentina. To avoid accusations of violence, the Mortgage Victims Platform has been

inviting the press to witness their "peaceful" demonstrations, a tactic which won the group significant social support in the beginning.

However, a recent survey showed that support for the generally noisy protests in residential areas is beginning to wane. Prominent politicians who have suffered escraches in recent weeks include Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría. Meanwhile, former PP MP Sigfrid Soria threatened protesters on his Twitter account last week: “I will beat the s**t out of any hippie who tries to harass or intimidate me; they won’t know what hit them.” Soon after his threats were made public, the PP national committee suspended him from the party. Unrepentant, Soria said during an interview

with the SER radio network, Soria: “I will exercise my right to selfdefence and rip off the head of anyone who tries to harass me or my family on the streets."

Official and unofficial tactics

Madrid Police Chief Alfonso José Fernández Díez said last week that he has given orders to his officers to begin identifying protestors who gather at politicians' homes as well as those who harass any elected official on the streets. As a result, more than 30 people may face misdemeanour charges which carry fines of up to €6,000.

The Attorney General’s Office has also begun looking at ways under current laws to prosecute people who take part in these protests. An increasing number of public

figures – including former Socialist Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez – are speaking out against the protests which appear to have been infiltrated by anti-system elements. The ABC newspaper recently published a "how to" manual issued by these elements who are planning to surround Parliament on April 25th which hopefully, according to one e-mail intercepted by the authorities, will trap MPs inside overnight at least and possibly for longer. The manual instructs protesters not to carry ID documents, and also tells them how to take advantage of police weaknesses. The groups are planning round-theclock shifts of six or eight hours and intend to extend the protests to other issues. The objective, according to the manual, is to "exercise maximum pressure and make it difficult to govern the country".

Country high on forced labour list

For the first time, Brussels has compiled figures for the number of people in europe who have been trafficked for forced labour. Between 2008 and 2010 there were 23,632 recorded victims of human trafficking in the eU's 27 member states, most of them being women who had been sexually exploited. According to the report by the eU statistics office eurostat, the second-highest number of cases in the eU in 2010, the year with the most reliable figures, was recorded in Spain. The report said the figures were likely just "the tip of the iceberg".. According to the Un's international Labour organization report, the real number of people forced into unpaid work in the eU could be as high as 880,000. mAdrid

Gold traders' balances found faulty

A report by the regional directorate General of industry has revealed that a surprise inspection on march 29th of a number of premises containing a total of 37 scales, found that only four out of 10 scales used in the capital's gold traders' stores showed the correct weight. Some of the owners of the businesses visited showed a "violent attitude" toward inspectors, who had to leave without properly carrying out their jobs.

The madrid regional government has announced it will take action against all business owners whose scales don't measure up adequately or who refuse to have them tested. They face fines of between €3,000 and €12,000 and some establishments could even be closed.

World News Maduro declared official winner Venezuela's National Electoral Council has formally proclaimed Nicolas Maduro as the winner of Sunday's closely-fought presidential election, backing his slender victory despite protests from opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.

According to the official count, Maduro won 50.7 per cent of votes to Capriles' 49.1 per cent. Following the announcement, clashes broke out between protesters and police in the capital Caracas, while in cities and towns across the country opposition supporters took to their balconies and the streets

to bang pots and pans in protest. Capriles had called on the National Electoral Council not to confirm the election result, citing voting irregularities, and demanded a recount.

He said there were more than 3,200 "incidents" from Sunday's poll that needed to be examined. He told a televised news conference: "All we're asking is that our rights be respected, that the will of the people be respected, and that every single vote be counted, every little piece of paper." But while the government has agreed to an audit of the electronic counting

system, it has refused to open the ballot boxes for a manual recount. The US has also called for an audit of the results.

A White House spokesman said on Monday: "This appears an important, prudent and necessary step to ensure that all Venezuelans have confidence in these results." Maduro claimed in his acceptance speech that the US supports a coup which he alleges is being planned by the opposition. The election was called

Welfare hand-outs slashed in four London boroughs People living in some parts of the City of London are this week feeling the force of the Government’s determination to clamp down on the amount people can receive in benefits. A cap is being introduced in four boroughs. Couples and single parents will receive no more than £500 a week

and the limit for single people will be £350. The cap will be fully implemented nationwide by the end of September. Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith described the cap as a strong incentive for people to move into work. He said: “We have a clear message – we will provide support to those who need it, but the days of

outrageous claims giving people incomes far above those of working families are over.” The move is designed to cut welfare spending and bring benefits into line with average income and already there appears to be movement with 20 per cent of claimants finding work, according to Government figures.

the Wizard of Oz was used in a distasteful attempt to tarnish the memory of the former Prime Minister. Never one to miss an opportunity, controversial Left Wing MP George Galloway even tried to frustrate plans for the cancellation of the Wednesday Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons, necessary to allow MPs to attend the funeral. But Labour leader Ed Miliband became the acceptable face of the

opposition when he paid tribute to Lady Thatcher’s achievements while acknowledging their political differences. And it all made little difference to the arrangements for the military procession leading to the service at St Paul’s Cathedral involving over 700 servicemen. The last Prime Minister to have such a send-off was Sir Winston Churchill in 1965.

Fire kills animals at Scottish zoo A fire in the tropical house at a Scottish zoo in the early hours of Sunday morning killed every creature in the building. An otter and a number of meerkats also died, but two dwarf West African crocodiles and a female otter were saved.

Around 50 fire fighters fought the blaze and prevented it from spreading to other enclosures at the Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian. The Scottish Fire and

Rescue Service are focusing their investigations on a heating system in the reptile house. The fire service said 11 fire engines and specialist appliances were involved with bringing the blaze under control at its height. The building was single storey and approximately 82ft (25m) by 49ft (15m) in size.

The privately-owned zoo, established in 2005 and home to more than 100 different species, has set up a dedicated fundraising page, following

calls from members of the public wishing to make a donation.

Leslie Coupar said: "The reptile house is a shell and I don't think there is anything that has survived the blaze. It was obviously extremely ferocious and everything has perished that was in the reptile house. Otters and meerkats were housed near to the blaze and the crocodiles. We do know that the crocodiles survived, they were submerged in water in their pond."

There is some confusion between cruelty to badgers using dogs, known as badger baiting, and the illegal killing of badgers by farmers and others trying to protect cattle from bovine TB, which they believe is spread by badgers.

15 points clear at the top with a 2-0 victory over Stoke, leaving Stoke on shaky ground and giving manager Tony Pulis cause for concern.

The other notable result was Sunderland’s 3-0 local derby win over Newcastle, which eases Sunderland’s relegation fears but leaves Newcastle in free-fall.

Coldest April for 96 years

“Spring is sprung, the grass is ris, I wonder where the birdees is” wrote Spike Milligan. Well, if they have any sense in the UK they will be fast asleep in a cosy nest!

However, now the coldest April in decades is melting away into something resembling a normal spring, according to forecasters with temperatures as high as 22ºC recorded in Kent on Sunday. If you are going to be travelling to the UK this week they are advising you to take an umbrella with you, especially if you are going to be in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Dan Williams, of the Met Office, said: "The late part of April and early May will be fairly typical for the time of year, with temperatures broadly near average. I imagine ordinary conditions will be welcome after the second coldest March on record, after 1962."

The Met Office recorded the coldest April minimum temperature for 96 years this month, will a low of minus 11.2C (11.84F) in Braemar, Scotland. Cold snaps like those experienced at the start of the month are not predicted to return for the foreseeable future, Mr Williams added.

Headmistress killed by fire engine Two tragic accidents happened in the Poole area of Dorset on Sunday morning. The first occurred after a vehicle left the A35 near Poole and struck a tree and, while the fire engine was on its way to deal with that incident at around 7.50am, it was involved in a head-on collision with a car on the B3075. In both incidents, the motorists were killed. In the first crash, the male driver who has not been named was declared dead at the scene. In the second incident that was just half a mile

from the first crash, Ally Mullany, a mother of four and head teacher at St. Joseph’s Catholic Combined School in Parkstone, Poole was killed. The school was closed on Monday as a mark of respect. Tributes have been paid and floral tributes to the teacher left outside the school. Two passengers in Mrs Mullany's car – believed to be children – were airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with serious injuries. A biography on the school's website describes Mrs Mullany as a "proud

mum of four children, two boys and two girls". It said she and her family, including husband Brendan, moved to the Poole area in 2002, following a brief time living in Singapore. Before that, the family lived in southeast London. She said she enjoyed horse riding and following the "highs and ... lows of Liverpool Football Club". An investigation has been launched into both collisions and witnesses are asked to contact Dorset Police.

Record-breaking poems

The last known manuscript poem by John Keats sold for a world record £181,250 last Wednesday at the sale of the first part (Poets A-K) of Roy Davids’ Collection Part III: Poetry: Poetical Manuscripts and Portraits of Poets at the famous auction house, Bonhams in New Bond Street, London. Charlotte Bronte’s ‘I’ve been wandering in the greenwoods’ – written when she was just 13 – also set a world record for the poet when it sold for £92,450. The sale made £940,000 in total. The second part, (Poets L-Y) will take place Wednesday May 8th. The Keats’ manuscript is from the draft of his well known early poem, 'I stood tiptoe on a little hill,' and

consists of 33 lines from the work scribbled on both front and back showing how the poet revised his thoughts as he wrote. This is the last poetical manuscript by Keats now ever likely to sold. It was estimated at £40,00045,000. The previous record for a Keats’ poem at auction was $130,000 in 2001. The Bronte poem is written on a small slip of paper 3x3 inches in size and cannot be read easily without a magnifying glass. Although Charlotte Brontë wrote around 200 poems, the vast majority of the manuscripts are in institutions making this one extremely rare. The previous record for a Charlotte Bronte poem at

auction was £62,500 in 2009. Among other works, W. H. Auden’s ‘Stop All the Clocks’ sold for £23,750, Robert Burn’s ‘Afton Braes’ made £39,650, Lord Byron’s ‘Sun of the Sleepless’ was bought for £26,250, ‘The Journey of the Magi’ by T.S. Eliot made £44,450 and Gerald Manley Hopkins’ ‘Binsey Poplars’ was sold for £49,250. The sale is the fruit of 40 years of collecting by the poet and scholar Roy Davids and is the finest collection of poetry ever to come to auction. In Mr Davids’ own words, “it would now be impossible for the present collection to be even approximately replicated”.

Britons held up by masked gunmen

On Friday of last week 10 Britons were among 55 tourists and two members of the Celebrity Cruises Eclipse cruise ship who were robbed by masked gunmen during a tour of the Botanical Gardens at Soufriere on the paradise island of St Lucia. Many of the passengers were said to be “shaken” according to local broadcaster DBS TV but no-one was hurt in the incident. Tourism Minister Lorne Theophilus said it was "unfortunate and a horrible scenario".

Matthew Beaubrun, Chairman of the St Lucia Tourist Board told DBS : "This is a rare incident … This is such an important industry for us that we need to respond. We have taken it very seriously at the highest level and I know the minister’s been in touch with the prime minister, so we are not taking this thing lightly." A statement from Celebrity Cruises said: "No one was injured in the robbery and the guests returned to the ship unharmed. We are

thankful that none of our guests was injured in this unfortunate event, and will continue to provide them any support they may need. A vacation is supposed to be filled with fun, rejuvenation and relaxation. An act of crime should not be part of any vacation, and we regret our guests had to experience those events." The Eclipse is currently on a 14-night Caribbean cruise that departed from Fort Lauderdale in Florida on April 6th and ends there on April 20th.

Film maker dies while sleeping rough

Lee Halpin, 27, was found dead in a derelict building three days after starting his documentary about life sleeping rough in Newcastle.

The young film maker was sleeping rough in freezing temperatures to highlight the plight of the homeless. He had planned to spend a week living on the streets in his home city of Newcastle but was found dead in a derelict building in the West End of the city only three days after beginning the project. How he died has not yet been confirmed but it is believed he may have died from hypothermia. Speaking earlier on a YouTube video, he said the project was part of an application for an investigative journalism course to give an example of fearless reporting.

He said he had spoken to a homeless charity about the rise in the number of people on the streets and the possible repercussions of the bedroom tax. "I'm about to go and spend a week being homeless in the West End of Newcastle. I will sleep rough for a week, scrounge for my food, access the services that other homeless individuals use," he said, adding: “I will interact with as many homeless people as possible and immerse myself in that lifestyle as deeply as I can."He concluded the video by saying he hoped it showed his willingness to get to the heart of a story.

Daniel Lake, a friend told the Evening Chronicle: "No-one knows how he passed away, but we think it could have been hypothermia. He made the ultimate sacrifice trying to raise awareness about what was happening to other people." A statement from Northumbria Police said: "Officers have arrested two men aged 26 and 30 on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug. They have been bailed pending further enquiries. A report is being prepared for the Coroner into the death of the man."

First Osprey egg spotted The first osprey egg to be laid in Scotland this year has been spotted in a nest in the Scottish Borders. Tweed Valley Osprey Project information officer Diane Bennett said the birds of prey returned from their winter sojourn just over a fortnight ago on April 3rd. The egg was spotted in a nest by a project volunteer on Friday. The Tweed Valley Ospreys Project, a partnership between the Forestry Commission Scotland, Kailzie Gardens and RSPB Scotland, works to help safeguard the birds and allow the public to enjoy them through two viewing centres in Glentress Forest and Kailzie Gardens, near Peebles. Ospreys have been nesting in the Tweed Valley for more than 15 years. Ms Bennett said: "It's

been another year of pretty bad weather for them but it seems that the ospreys are getting used to dealing with the cold and snow when they first return. This is the tenth season where they've come back to a sturdy nest, thanks to the work of Forestry Commission Scotland's conservation rangers, and with this first egg, things are looking promising. One of our new volunteers spotted the egg on Friday and as you'd expect, the mother osprey has been fussing over it and has made sure that she's found the best position for incubation. Hopefully there will be more eggs to come – but for now it's all good news."

The final decision whether to summon Carcaño to court for a new round of questioning lies with a Seville judge, who must also take into account the cost of the search operation, which has already cost €616,319 since

Marta went missing four years ago. Carcaño, who is serving a 21-year jail term, is the only person to have been convicted of the murder, even though there were four other people involved in the case. A friend of Carcaño’s, Javier García, who was underage at the time, served two years and 11 months in a juvenile centre for helping to cover up the crime.

Carcaño’s stepbrother, the latter’s girlfriend and another friend were acquitted of all charges.

Singer sentenced to two years Singer Isabel Pantoja was sentenced to two years in jail and a fine of €1,147,000 by a Malaga judge on Tuesday morning for her part in the so-called Blanquero moneylaundering case involving her former partner and former Marbella Mayor Julián Muñoz, his ex-wife Maite Zaldívar and four others.

The case was an offshoot of the Malaya corruption case in Marbella, which is still going through the courts. Muñoz was sentenced to seven years in jail and the judge ordered him to start serving it immediately, given his high flight risk. He was also fined €3.3 million. His former wife was sentenced to three years and three months in jail and a fine of €2.48 million. The

Residents to sue council

The residents of Los Alamos and Playamar in Torremolinos have been complaining to the local council for years about the noise from the chiringuitos and bars in the area, to no avail. At the beginning of the year, they decided not to tolerate the situation any longer and formed the Chiringuitos' Victims' Association to sue the council in the person of its representative, Mayor Pedro Fernández Montes. They have accused him of failure to carry out his duties and influence trafficking.

The Association's lawyer, Antonio Martin, said the mayor had failed to protect their right to rest and had not made the establishments obey the law. Meanwhile, the owners of bars and restaurants in the area claim the police and the council make them respect the local laws and regulations but let the chiringuitos do as they please.

handed down a lighter sentence to Pantoja because she broke with Muñoz when she realised he was using her to launder money gained from underhand practices while he was mayor. She will not go to jail because she has no police record. Muñoz's ex-wife got a longer sentence because the judge said she carried on laundering money for Muñoz until he left her for the singer, even though she knew what he was up to. The Local Memo from Voice Madrid

Muriel Pilkington

Here we go again

I

t would seem that former Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez is the only person with any sense left in the Socialist Party. Speaking after a meeting of the Association for the Defence of the Transition (1975-78), he confessed to reporters that at times recently he had wanted to be some 7,000 kilometres away from Spain so as not to have to watch the daily newscasts, which more often than not these days kick off with scenes of protesters outside politicians' homes. As Socialist leader in those exciting days after the death of dictator Francisco Franco, Gonzalez rid the Socialist Party's jargon and literature of all its Marxist elements, realising that a majority of Spaniards would never vote for anything that reminded them of the Communist Party's devious role on the Republican side in the Civil War, when its leaders spent more time getting rid of anarchists and anybody else who did not toe the party line instead of fighting Franco.

G

onzalez said he believed the country would overcome the economic crisis but warned that institutionally and politically we were "galloping headlong towards anarchy". He was referring to the Mortgage Victims Platform's tactic of protesting outside the homes of Partido Popular politicians "to draw attention to the plight of people being evicted from their homes". Like anyone with any sense, Gonzalez thinks that freedom of expression stops short of people's right to privacy.

T

he same people who are behind these protests – and all fingers point towards the Communistdominated Izquierda Unida (United Left) – are now planning to surround Parliament on April 25th, a Thursday – in the hope of trapping MPs inside until the weekend "when we'll be joined by thousands more people". The security forces have apparently been doing a good job of penetrating these groups and have come up with the "manual for revolution" they've developed, which has been published in a couple of national newspapers recently.

B

ut back to Gonzalez, who is very worried that his party is being dragged inexorably leftwards in its current leaders' belief that the United Left's tactics will be the most vote-catching ones for the next general election. He knows what anyone with any sense knows – which is that the protests are frightening moderate Socialists away from the Party, probably into the arms of Union, Progress and Democracy

(UP&D) – founded by Rosa Diez who resigned her position as Socialist EuroMP when José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced his intention to hold talks with the Basque terrorist group ETA in 2006. A Basque herself, Diez loathes ETA, and founded her party just six months before the 2008 general election when she won one seat. UP&D now have five seats in Parliament.

I

ronically, Gonzalez was speaking just days before the celebration of the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the ill-fated Second Republic on April 14th, 1931. Thousands turned out in the main cities across Spain on Sunday to demand the abolition of the monarchy as a first step towards the Third Republic. Recent polls show that just under 50 per cent of Spaniards support the monarchy right now and some 30 per cent would support a Republic. The rest were Don't Knows. But paradoxically, the poll also showed that more than 80 per cent believe Crown Prince Felipe would make a good king. I wish the Spaniards would get over the Francoinduced political schizophrenia they suffer from, which is never to tell anyone exactly what they're thinking, just what they believe the questioner wants to hear. Then we would know what they really think.

G

onzalez called on people to go back to the more cool-headed days of the Transition, when even the Communist Party behaved in a civilised manner and contributed to helping the country get over nearly four decades of dictatorship. He also promised not to flee thousands of miles away but would hang around and try to come up with some good ideas for his party. But will its current leadership listen?

W

ith the Socialist Party currently in his pocket, United Left leader Cayo Lara is strutting around like the king of the hill these days but I suspect that the election results in November 2015 will wipe the smirk off his face. Most Spaniards, even those who have no memories of the Civil War or the early years of the Franco dictatorship – which were very savage – won't vote for a party bent on turning the clock back to those evil times.

Royal excuses Writes for the English language version of

T

he explanation was much worse than the excuse. Sometimes when you hear an elected official, or anyone who is in the public eye for that matter, give an official response to a certain controversy or situation that has perhaps eased in on their own comfort, you often wonder: who are the people that are getting paid good quid to advise them on public communication? Such was the question that I raised last week when King Juan Carlos and his Zarzuela royal household had to answer to allegations that the Spanish monarchy was doing its best to push out troubled son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin from Spain and perhaps help him try to land a job in the far and distant emirate of Qatar where few journalists would bother him.

U

rdangarin, as we know, is in it knee-deep in a scandal involving the alleged diversion of public funds from a non-profit entity, the Nóos Institute, he set up about 10 years ago with a partner, Diego Torres, which was dedicated to organising sports and tourism events for regional governments, such as those in the Balearic Islands and Valencia. Prosecutors think that he inflated price tags on contracts, and later diverted the extra cash to his own businesses, including a real estate firm that was also run by his wife, the Infanta Cristina. With the growing pressure to indict King Juan Carlos’ daughter, there is no doubt that the royal family is fumbling to explain what and when it knew about Urdangarin’s alleged sordid business ventures.

W

ord surfaced last week that in the middle of this criminal investigation, the king called up his old friend in Qatar, the sheikh, Hamada bin Khalifa Al Than, to ask him to find a coaching job for Urdangarin on the national handball team. The son-in-law played for the Spanish national team in the 1992 Olympics and is considered one of the best in the nation. After this alleged royal sweeping-under-the-rug was

made public, the Zarzuela royal palace issued a statement: the king did indeed talk to his old mate the sheikh, but it had nothing to do with Urdangarin’s employment prospects but instead to convince the emir to buy armament and weapons from Spain.

W

hat does Qatar need with four corvette class warships, six patrol boats and a support vessel? Of course, the emirate has a lot of extra cash to spend but then again where are the guarantees that all this military hardware won’t end up in the hands of some renegade nation? Zarzuela palace didn’t explain this.

S

pain is one of the top ten exporters of weapons and military equipment in world, according to the Stockholm-based International Peace Institute (SIPRI). I wrote about this last month (The News March 20th, 2013) when the SIPRI called attention to the fact that the Spanish government was actively seeking buyers to purchase some of its 87 Typhoon Eurofighters because of budgetary constraints. Spain, with the king’s help, is no doubt fuelling an arms race in the Middle East because the economy in this nation, as well as the rest of Europe, apparently warrants this manoeuvre.

I

t would have been much more settling if the Zarzuela Palace had indeed admitted that the monarch did indeed try to pave the way for the troubled son-in-law instead of explaining that King Juan Carlos was trying to convince his friend, the sheikh, to buy armament from the Spanish shipbuilder Navantia. This royal explanation will no doubt turn into a royal controversy that will indeed come back and bite the king in his rear – especially if these weapons fall into the hands of shady nations.

TIMS Concert with Sylvia Griffiths The International Music Society, sings your kind of music.

The musical concerts at the Salon Varietes are a treat and the T.I.M.S concerts are special. The next one will be a special treat, but also a farewell. This concert will be the final performance by Sylvia Griffiths as the T.I.M.S choir piano accompanist.

Sylvia Griffiths became the accompanist through a chance conversation with a lady in a dress shop, who mentioned the local choir needed someone to help out – just for a month or so – with rehearsals. That was twenty-three years ago. The performance was Gilbert and Sullivan's Operetta “The Sorcerer” and the theatre was The Salon Varietes. To be fair Sylvia was available. She and her husband Arthur had, a year earlier, sold their very successful business in the UK and retired to Spain for a quiet life, but she was adamant “the help” was temporary.

She has been busy ever since – not only as the accompanist but at times the society president and also its musical director. Although Sylvia steps down from the choir she will continue with her work for the theatre.

Classically trained as a young lady on piano since the age of seven, a church organist and some time spent with the Birmingham Police Dance Band, means Sylvia is at home with just about every style of music, from Bach to Beatles and opera to a modern musical. She has rehearsed, performed, and coaxed the best out of people and performers at countless shows, musical productions and concerts. She is and remains a real gem and a terrific musical asset to the Costa del Sol. What’s more, all her hard work and unimaginable number of hours – and there are a lot of them – are just given away freely, no charge. In her time on the Costa del Sol Sylvia Griffths

with T.I.M.S have provided a wealth of joy and entertainment to 1000s of people of all nationalities, at the Casas de la Cultura, in churches, chapels, hotels and even the Cathedral.

Her successor is pianist Christine Wallner from Vienna, Austria now living on the Costa del Sol. Christine will introduce herself at the concert with one of Frédéric Chopin's best known piano solo compositions, FantaisieImpromptu in C-sharp minor.

This special concert – the T.I.M.S Annual Spring Concert – starts at 7.00 pm, on Sunday 21th April at the Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola. Entitled “ An April Evening of Song” it is a choral performance by over forty singers who will sing you a selection of music from Elgar, John Rutter, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Les Misérables and The Beatles, with guitar from Danny Pardo and solos by

Fred Green and Gilly Bareford.

“So we say, thank you for the music, the songs they're singing. Thanks for all, the joy you’re bringing.” By Pete Woodall

Charity dinner dance great success

The Soroptimist International Club Costa del Sol charity dinner dance last Friday 5th April in Mijas was a terrific success and raised over 4,600 Euros for The Asociación de Familiares y Personas con Enfermedad Mental de la Costa del Sol (AFESOL).

This was the fourth such Soroptimist charity

dinner with 144 people in attendance. AFESOL, the association that helps the families and those with mental illness on the Costa del Sol, was represented by Concepción Cuevas González the President of the association. “We are simply delighted with the result,” said Jenny van der Mark,

President of the SI Club Costa del Sol, “and are very grateful to everyone for making this such a wonderful evening.”

Local girl gets hitched in Gib!

Local lass Tracey Burns married her lovely man, Kevin Traynor in Gibraltar on Thursday April 4th at 10am. In a fairly low key civil ceremony at the register office the couple “plighted their troth” very willingly as you can see in these great pictures taken on the occasion by their friends and witnesses Edwina and John. Further celebrations will be held in Coin in May but, in the meantime all of us at The News would like to wish Tracey and Kevin all the happiness in the world as they start their new life together. Tracey was best known locally as the manageress of JK’s and still does the monthly charity auctions. Well done, guys!

Birds on the Wing

Andalucía is probably the best area in Europe to see birds, the reason is

migration. In autumn birds start to leave their European homes and fly

south to Africa for the winter, in the Spring they return. One of the problems the migratory birds face is the Mediterranean – most birds do not like flying over large expanses of water so they seek out the narrowest crossing. At the Straits of Gibraltar this is just over 14 kms so huge numbers of birds fly through Andalucía to get over to Africa and then return by the same route in the Spring. The Spring migration is

in full swing right now and masses of “spring migrants” are flying over on their way back to Europe. Others are termed “summer visitors” and have their summer home here. The very colourful Bee Eaters (pictured) are currently flying through but they are not stopping – these birds have their summer homes elsewhere in Europe. So far only some of the “summer visitor” Bee Eaters, who will stay in Andalucía have arrived, the main body of these birds will come over in the next couple of weeks. So keep your eyes open. Fun and frolics with TAPAS ‘How The Other Half Loves’ is an ingenious, funny and brilliantly crafted masterpiece, which juggles time and space to present the lives and loves, passion and panic of three married couples in a play of love and laughter, meals and mayhem.

Alan Ayckbourn has created a parallel universe in which one living room stands in for two households, two front door bells ring at once, two wives prepare for two dinner parties at the same time, at the same table. Add to this Ayckbourn's – bored trademarks suburban couples, infidelity, rivalry, and a touch of violence and you have all the elements for a truly wonderful evening’s entertainment. H

old onto your hats folks, I’m about to write a positive review about an Oscar winning movie!

Y

MOviES  TO WATCH OUT FOR

Obl i vi On Directed by Joseph Kosinski Starring: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko

It’s difficult to identify a sci- fi movie that Oblivion does not pay homage to, and the list is long, from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, Blade Runner, and more than a smattering of WALL:E, plus a soupçon of George Lucas’s Star Wars.

You’ll love it if you think it offers a pacy new twist on some familiar scifi plot lines or you’ll think it’s derivative. But the critics are in general agreement that it is a sumptuous visual feast

with stunning special effects. And Cruise turns in another powerful performance in a movie with enough plot twists to make the journey worthwhile and rather more entertaining than Ridley Scott’s disappointing Prometheus.

Cruise is Jack Harper and the movie is set 60 years into a dystopian future – the moon was destroyed by an alien invasion which led to the destruction of Earth. Harper and his colleagues

are tasked with making sure that the resource gathering facilities left on earth are secured against scavengers, while the remains of the population are aboard a space station soon heading to a new life on Titan, Saturn’s moon. But Jack discovers a female human survivor in the wreckage of a crashed spacecraft and he begins to question his very existence. The woman (Kurylenko) is identical to a woman from his dreams

of a life before the world was devastated. Jack finds a group of human survivors led by Beech (Freeman) and the questions he cannot answer get more urgent and ever bigger.

The movie may not be as deep as it thinks it is, but the cast put in some good performances and with Cruise’s charisma to help paper over any glaring plot holes it’s an entertaining success for the ever busy Tom.

Django Unchained

Gangster Squad

Former dentist, Dr. King Schultz, buys the freedom of a slave, Django, and trains him with the intent to make him his deputy bounty hunter.

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen runs the show in this town, reaping the illgotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and if he has his way every wire bet placed west of Chicago.

Directed by Quentin Tarantino Starring: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz

Instead, he is led to the site of Django's wife who is under the hands of Calvin Candie, a ruthless plantation owner.

Release date: April 23rd 2013

Directed by Ruben Fleischer Starring: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Sean Penn

And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but

also the police and the politicians who are under his control.

It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara and Jerry Wooters, who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart.

es, I know this is as rare as getting a hot burger in McDonalds but occasionally, it does happen! It was with great trepidation that I settled down to watch Argo last week. Up until now, whenever I’ve watched a Ben Affleck movie I have scanned the credits for “Mr. Affleck appeared by kind permission of The Forestry Commission” – but this movie proved that everyone is truly redeemable.

C

losely based on the declassified CIA files, the film follows a bonkers, but true story of US diplomats captured during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis.

E

nraged by the Western world offering the deposed Shah celebrity status, the Iranians stormed the American embassy and while the terrified occupants raced around shredding and burning as much information possible, while preparing to face the violent mob, six workers realized they were standing next to the street exit and made a dash for it. The only place where they could find sanctuary for any amount of time was at the private home of the Canadian ambassador.

A

ware of the delicate and dangerous situation these Americans were in, Tony Mendez from the CIA was summoned by America’s highest echelons to solve the problem. After dismissing mundane ideas as too perilous, Tony hits on the novel idea of making a fake movie. With Hollywood’s help, Tony enters Iran as a location scout, equipped with scripts, storyboards and new identities for the imprisoned Americans.

W

hat follows is a genuine ‘edge of your seat’ ride of convincing the victims to learn their new identities, and their validity to authorities while meanwhile the Iranians have recruited children to piece together the shredded information from the Embassy to identify the missing six.

A

roller coaster, heart-inmouth ride ensues as the escape plan materialises. Anyone who gets the jitters when passing through customs, even though they are perfectly innocent (as I always do!) will identify with the terror these guys must have felt, facing torture and death if they are discovered.

I

t all sounds a bit heavy going, but the quirky intelligent script brought a much needed relief with its dark comedic lines.

I

t is seldom these days that I see a film that I want to keep for my collection, but this one I could happily watch again and again. There has been a lot of dissent about the movie, claiming that America took too much credit for what realistically was Canada’s triumph. My reaction to this is “Get a life!” a movie is entertainment, and if a couple of adjustments have to be made in order to attain that, then call it poetic licence. The fact remains that the original agent Tony Mendez helped with the script writing and the making of the movie so you can’t get much closer to reality than that.

A

nother touch I really appreciated was at the end of the film, when during the credits, actual photos of the crisis were shown alongside stills from the film and photos of the six next to the portrayals and their accuracy was commendable.

You could feel that the week is moving too fast for you and you could be left with a feeling of being rushed or hurried, take your time to make sure you are making the right choices and decisions, even if you feel there is intense pressure to act hastily. Your social skills are at an all time high and you will be fun to be around, this is creating the conditions where you can bring your personal relationships to the deepest and most satisfying levels. Finding your way through the dark if you need to becomes easier than usual, just follow your inner senses and trust where they lead. You may very well be feeling like you are pulling away from a past that is meant to remain in the past, while emerging into this land of the novel and new. You may have the chance to set a private wish into motion. Do not allow yourself to become tunnel visioned as this could work against you right now, be open to ideas and suggestions from others. This week will keep you well on your toes requiring you to be sharp and present; you may need to invest an extra dose of mental focus to ensure that something does not slip by you. There could be some radical alterations in the scenery of your life in the next few weeks. Detach from drama, invest only where it counts, and it will be smooth sailing. It is at times like this that incredible flashes of insight and understanding come pouring in, the kind that has the capacity to help transform your life. You are now faced with many important options that can send you into very different directions, this means that you need to be explicitly clear and honest with yourself about what you really want and need, because when these upcoming choices are made, there is no turning back. There are a lot of emotional and relationship issues currently in the mix. Later in the week comes the insights as to how all the elements of your future may fit together. A brand new start is happening this week, where your passion is ignited and you feel that you have a place in this world. It is all about planting your seeds where they have the best chance to grow tall and strong, it is as if prosperity is calling your name. Primarily you will be focused on your relationships and you will discover who is just going along for the ride or who really believes in you enough to stand behind you, your ideas and efforts. Trust in your strength Virgo and the impact you are here to make. The mind can help or haunt you, it all depends on the content you choose to fill it with. Someone in your life may have expressed some things that have caused you to pause, bringing you to doubt. The next two weeks will offer a few ingenious ways to help your mind work famously for you. Some circumstances may be beyond your ability to control at the moment – just go with the flow.

LIBRA

A new beginning is could occur within a relationship in some way. All of us attract exactly what we need even though we don’t know we need it, so initially something may surface as a surprise, but over time you will come to see why it needed to evolve in this way. A better way forward is likely to occur with another. Stand tall for your wants and desires and let others know verbally what September 23rd - these are, it is time for open and honest debates. There will be a tendency to focus on all that is broken this week as you revise all that is going on in your life. There could also be a tendency to want to force things forward when they would be better left to go at their own natural pace. Patience is needed now. There is an emphasis upon your relationships and there is likely to be an urge to create the most solid home base you can. This is a good time for finances and for making a professional shift.

This week make your decisions based on provable facts rather than the emotions. You may be feeling a little down beat when you are expected by others to be a pillar of strength and unbiased knowledge. Shortly your energies are set to increase but before you go haring off into the distance make sure that you have set clear intentions for the road ahead. You are creating a lot of attention right now and the public are interested in what you have to say.

Something true and new will be set in motion this week and your emotional efforts will not be lost in a cause, finally somehow, you will find a way to direct the flow of feelings that have been making it a challenge to cope. You need to be able to adapt to changing conditions and roll with whatever may happen remembering that the chaos you experience is there to bring about the changes needed in your life. Economic conditions turn a corner and improve significantly. If there ever was an energetic spike that would break the mould, creating something radically better it would be now. You will also have a few people by your side to help in this endeavour as two or more minds will be better than one. There may be some red tape and financial requirements to overcome but simply take things one step at a time whilst keeping your eye on the prize. Anything you do or say will have powerful effects upon others, just trust in yourself and your instincts.

Something you have imagined could be nearly ready to bring into form. There may be some initial hesitation and self doubt, but there is no reason not to trust its ultimate unveiling. Do not be worried about involving others as what may be super difficult for one person to accomplish; it can be a piece of cake when there are two. You do not have to be a martyr and do everything by yourself. Financial windfalls are likely as well as many other unexpected rewards too.

12 oz (350 g) halloumi cheese, cut into 1 inch (2.5 cm) cubes 1 medium pepper (any colour) 1 medium red onion 4 medium cap mushrooms For the marinade: 1 level teaspoon each of chopped fresh thyme, oregano, rosemary, mint and parsley (or similar combination of whatever herbs are available) 1 fat clove garlic

2 fl oz (55 ml) extra virgin olive oil juice 1 lime freshly milled black pepper.

Directions 1. Begin by cutting the pepper and onion into even-sized pieces about 1 inch (2.5 cm) square, to match the size of the cubes of cheese. 2. Then chop the herbs and garlic quite finely and combine them with the oil, lime juice and some freshly milled pepper. 3. Now place the cheese, onion, pepper and mushrooms in a large, roomy, non-metallic bowl and pour the marinade over them, mixing very thoroughly. Cover and place in the fridge for 24 hours, and try to give them a stir round every now and then. 4. When you're ready to barbecue the kebabs,

take the two skewers and thread a mushroom on first (pushing it right down) followed by a piece of onion, a piece of pepper and a cube of cheese. Repeat this with more onion, pepper and cheese, finishing with a mushroom at the end. 5. Place the kebabs over the hot coals, turning frequently till they are tinged brown at the edges – about 10 minutes. 6. Brush on any leftover marinade juices as you turn them. Serve with Oven-roasted Potatoes with Garlic and Rosemary.

Well, as I am sure you all know by now, poco a poco means little by little. Another similar expression you may hear cropping up is "algo es algo. This literally means "something is something" and is used in circumstances when you want to say that something is better than nothing. Tengo poco trabajo. Solo trabajo tres días la semana pero algo es algo. I have very little work. I only work three days a week but it's better than nothing. But we digress. Back to poco. Hace poco means a short while ago And you may hear dentro de poco - in a short while. Un poco más is a little more Un poco menos - A little less. Poco antes - A little before Poco después - A little after Por poco means almost Por poco perdimos el autobús - We almost missed the bus Poco falta para is used to say that there isn't much time until something is going to happen. Poco falta para la feria de Coín - It isn't long until Coín feria. Poco falta para mi cumpleaños - It isn't long till my birthday. And of course if you only want a little of something you say Solo un poco de.... Quiero solo un poco de vino - I only want a little wine. Not a sentence I ever remember having used but it may come in useful some day! Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie

A kidney "grown" in the laboratory by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital has been transplanted into animals where it started to produce urine. Similar techniques to make simple body parts have already been used in patients, but the kidney is one of the most complicated organs made so far.

Kidneys filter the blood to remove waste and excess water. They are also the most in-demand organ for transplant, with long waiting lists. The researchers' vision is to take an old kidney and strip it of all its old cells to leave a honeycomb-like scaffold. The kidney would then be rebuilt with cells taken from the patient. This would have two major advantages over current organ transplants.

The tissue would match

the patient, so they would not need a lifetime of drugs to suppress the immune system to prevent rejection. It would also vastly increase the number of organs available for transplant. Most organs which are offered are rejected, but they could be used as templates for new ones.

The Massachusetts researchers have taken the first steps towards creating usable engineered kidneys. They took a rat kidney and used a detergent to wash away the old cells. The remaining web of proteins, or scaffold, looks just like a kidney, including an intricate network of blood vessels and drainage pipes. This protein plumbing was used to pump the right cells to the right part of the kidney, where they joined with the scaffold to rebuild

the organ.

It was kept in a special oven to mimic the conditions in a rat's body for the next 12 days. When the kidney was tested in the laboratory, urine production reached 23% of natural ones. The team then tried transplanting an organ into a rat. Once inside the body, the kidney's effectiveness fell to 5%. However, the researchers said that restoring a small fraction of normal function could be enough: "If you're on haemodialysis then kidney function of 10% to 15% would already make you independent of haemodialysis. It's not that we have to go all the way." Prof Martin Birchall, a surgeon at University College London, said the

researchers had addressed some of the main technical barriers to making it possible to use regenerative medicine to address a really important medical need. He said that being able to do this for people needing an organ transplant could revolutionise medicine: "It's almost the nirvana of regenerative medicine, certainly from a surgical point of view, that you could meet the biggest need for transplant organs in the world – the kidney."

Parkinson's sufferers 'face regular discrimination' A survey of more than 2,000 people commissioned by the charity Parkinson's UK has shown that nearly half the people suffering from Parkinson's face regular discrimination, such as having their symptoms

mistaken for drunkenness.

One person in 500 people is affected by the condition in Britain. Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition that attacks the part of the brain that controls movement. The main symptoms of Parkinson's are tremors or shaking that cannot be controlled, and rigidity of the muscles, which can make movement difficult and painful. Speech, language and

facial expressions can also be affected. Most people who get it are aged 50 or over but younger people can have it too. The survey found that one in five people living with Parkinson's had been mistaken for being drunk, while one in 10 had been verbally abused or experienced hostility in public because of their condition. Just over 60 per cent said they thought the public had a poor understanding of how the condition affects people.

More than 37 per cent of those surveyed said they felt isolated when in public and 60 per cent said they felt uncomfortable or nervous. But the research also revealed that discrimination did not just come from strangers. Ten per cent said they had been treated badly while

at work, and 30 per cent said that friends treated them differently because they did not understand the condition. The charity said the survey results painted a deeply disturbing picture about public attitudes towards those living with the degenerative disease.

A spokesman said: "This basic misunderstanding has sentenced people with Parkinson's to a life of hurtful comments, being refused service in shops and even being shouted at in the street, all because people have mistaken their speech or movement problems for drunkenness." The charity is urging people to put themselves in the shoes of the 127,000 people in the UK living with the condition and learn more about Parkinson's.

Known as one of the greatest conductors in the world

Sir Colin Davis has taken his last bow

… and the tributes flow for this great man of the orchestra

Sir Colin Davis, president of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), has died at the age of 85. First studying as a clarinetist, he was determined to fulfill his dream of becoming a conductor and worked with many of the great orchestras of the world.

In a statement, the LSO said: "Sir Colin first conducted the LSO in 1959 and became principal conductor in 1995. He was the longest-serving principal conductor in the LSO's history and has been at the head of the LSO family for

many years. His musicianship and his humanity have been cherished by musicians and audiences alike." Sir Colin was honorary conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle and also had links to the Royal Opera House, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra. In addition, he had mentored young musicians at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School. In a statement, the LSO said

"Sir Colin's role in British musical life was immense" and added that "music lovers across the world have been inspired by his performances and recordings. He will be remembered with huge affection and admiration by the LSO and our thoughts are with his family at this time."

His repertoire was broad, but among the composers with whom he was particularly associated were Mozart, Berlioz, Elgar, Sibelius, Stravinsky and Tippett.

Ozzy falls off his wagon but has managed to climb back on again Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne has gone on Facebook admitting that he had been drinking and taking drugs again for the past 18 months but also saying that he has been “an a**hole” The Black Sabbath singer posted a frank statement on his Facebook page on Monday which confirmed that he has recently stopped his "insane behaviour" and that he is 44 days sober. Ozzy also stated that he is not separating from his wife, Sharon, as had been reported earlier in the week.

The Facebook post reads: "For the last year and a half I have been drinking and taking drugs. I was in a very dark place and was an a**hole to the people I love most,

my family. However, I am happy to say that I am now 44 days sober. Just to set the record straight, Sharon and I are not divorcing. I’m just trying to be a better person. I would like to apologise to Sharon, my family, my friends and my bandmates for my insane behavior during this period and my fans." Black Sabbath are also about to release their first album since 1978’s “Never Say Die!”. The new album, entitled “13” was made primarily in Los Angeles under the guidance of producer Rick Rubin who has done albums with such legends as Metallica and Johnny Cash. Rage Against The Machine’s Brad Wilk replaces original Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward on the new album.

Add to that the fact that Black Sabbath will be touring the UK in December and you will see that Mr Osborne has a lot to look forward to.... off the booze! Dates for the tour are: London O2 Arena (December 10th) Belfast Odyssey Arena (December 12th)

Last time even Sir Bruce Forsyth was seen doing the dance on the UK’s Strictly Come Dancing and this new craze promises to be even more popular. The new phenomenon was first seen last Saturday during a concert in Seoul where Psy is seen as an international superstar. The singer has said in the past that he was frightened of becoming a one-hit wonder

Opinion

Martin Abrahams London & Mijas I was disgusted by the apparent terrorist attacks on the Boston Marathon on Monday that unfolded on Sky News. What on earth is this world coming to when people seem to think it’s OK to kill and maim innocent people as they go about innocent activities such as running a marathon or watching it. As I understand it, one of those killed was an eightyear-old boy, standing with his mother and sister, who were both badly injured, waiting for his father, who was running in the race, to cross the finish line. If it was a dog that had attacked these people, we all know what would happen to it. When I was a lad, capital

punishment was still in existence in the UK and, indeed it still is in some States of America. It seems to me that the “ultimate deterrent” used to stop some people before they went too far and perhaps this is the way we should be going again. It is true that some it didn’t stop but, in the main, the streets, at least, in the UK, were a safer place then. I have a cousin who visits prisoners and is always saying how hard done by they are and we should all be more understanding and give them more counselling, support and financial help when they come out. All very well but, most people know what the law

is and, if you don’t want to get nicked and end up in prison it’s simple – don’t do the crime in the first place. The old saying of “if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime” still holds true and it’s about time those that do end up there stopped getting all the perks and were made to break some rocks and be fed gruel again Forget giving them the telly, computer games and everything else, we’ve tried that and it hasn’t worked. I for one would like to able to walk home again after a night out without constantly looking over my should to make sure I’m not going to get bashed over the head and robbed!

Beverley Campbell Marbella I have been living on the Costa del Sol for some thirty years and since retiring and subsequently finding that I was getting sick with boredom, I have been doing voluntary work. I often see appeals for volunteers in your paper from charities and I would like to tell anyone who is thinking of doing some sort of part-time work for any

of the charities to go ahead and do it. I meet lots of new people, many of whom will now, hopefully, be lifelong friends. We go out to dinner, attend other charity events, either helping out or just enjoying ourselves walking around them. We go out to the cinema and attend all manner of classes and functions. In the last few years four of us have even started going away for long weekends and week-long holidays – something I could not bring myself to do on my own which was silly, I know, but that was the way it was for me.

After my husband passed away, I had become depressed with not knowing what to do with myself but my voluntary work (I work for three different charities) has given me a totally new lease of life. I have new interests, new acquaintances and new friends and, believe me, you meet all sorts coming into the charity shops! So ladies and gentlemen, whether you are on your own or in a relationship, make time for some “me” time, go out and get to meet new people and of course, with charity work you will be helping others at the same time.

Paul Keller Your coverage of the death of Mrs Thatcher last week was in depth and interesting. I was one of those people who admired the “guts” of the lady and isn’t it a shame that politicians these days don’t seem to have an ounce of the sheer determination she had? It seems to me that, whether you vote, left,

Mijas

right or centre you pretty much get the same thing and all of them go along with what they perceive will get them votes rather than what needs to be done. The UK is in a terrible mess at the moment so please, somebody like Mrs T. come to the fore and get us back to being a “Great” Britain to be proud of.

Comment By Ken Campbell

Thatcher’s Celestial Reign This week will see the start of the annual Lyrid meteor shower with possibly dozens of shooting stars streaking across the sky.

A

meteor shower occurs when the Earth passes through the debris field of a comet’s tail and no, I’m not making this up but ironically this week the Earth will pass through the tail of comet THATCHER!

C

omet Thatcher is a long period comet that means it takes about 415 years to orbit the sun. There are no photographs of Comet Thatcher as the last time it appeared in the inner Solar System was in 1861 long before astro-photography was widespread. It is due to return again in 2276, so it’s a fairly safe bet that none of us will be around to see it.

T

he comet was discovered on April 5th 1861 when it was 31 million miles from the Earth by an American professor called A. E. Thatcher. It seems that this Thatcher too was also the bearer of doom as one week later the American Civil War broke out. Although the discovery of the comet is credited to Mr Thatcher we now know that the history of the comet dates back to at least 687 B. C. by the trail of comet dust it leaves behind. And we know about the dust because of the meteor shower it produces – the Lyrids.

T

here are several meteor showers throughout the year as the Earth passes through the tail debris of various comets. The names of the meteor showers come from the particular constellations that the meteors seem to radiate from. If you follow an imaginary line backwards from each meteor during the shower then they all appear to come from the same part of the sky. This particular shower radiates from the constellation of Lyra, the Harp, near to the bright star Vega. However, this is only a chance alignment as these meteors burn up in the atmosphere about 100 kilometres – or 60 miles – up. Vega lies trillions of times farther away at 25 light years.

D

uring August the most famous of the meteor showers, the Perseids, appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus. Later on around November there is an even more spectacular meteor shower that radiates from the mouth of Leo the Lion, the Leonids.

T

he debris trail of Comet Thatcher is very wide so it takes the Earth a few days to pass right through it so this meteor shower lasts from around April 16th to 25th. Unfortunately this year the new moon occurred on April 10th. Afterwards, the moon began waxing and getting steadily brighter in the evening sky. Full moon falls on April 25th, and around that time the sky will be too bright with moonlight for much of

T

the night.

he peak of the Lyrid shower usually lasts for less than a day, coming on or near April 22nd. Due to the moon phase in 2013, the predawn hours on April 22nd will be best for meteor watching. At their peak, the Lyrids offer about 10 to 20 meteors an hour.

Y

ou don’t need any special equipment to watch meteors, the technique is to wrap up warm and lie on a recliner or deck chair and simply look up. Meteors can appear anywhere in the sky as the dust-sized particles strike the upper atmosphere at over 100,000mph. The friction causes them to burn up in a brief streak across the sky almost like faint gossamer trails. Another feature of the Lyrids to watch for is that about one quarter of these swift meteors exhibit persistent trains, that is, ionised gas trails that glow for a few seconds after the meteor has passed.

T

here is no way of predicting exactly how many meteors you may see as meteor showers are notorious for defying the most careful predictions, and the Lyrids are no exception. If the Earth passes through an unusually thick clump of comet rubble, an elevated number of meteors could be in store. And an outburst of Lyrid meteors is always a possibility, though none is predicted for this year.

A

merican observers saw an outburst of nearly 100 meteors per hour in 1982. Also in the 20th century, around 100 meteors per hour were seen from Japan in 1945 and in Greece in 1922 a brief spurt was said to ‘fall like rain’. So you never know . . . The Return of Thatcher might surprise us all!

Fernando and Ferrari Fantastico! Fernando Alonso showed amazing pace as he roared to a dominant victory in the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday to give Ferrari their first win of the Formula One season.

In a dry race, dictated by tyre choices and frequent pitstops, the Spaniard beat Lotus's Kimi Raikkonen by 10.1 seconds to make amends for crashing out of the previous race in Malaysia. Lewis Hamilton completed a trio of world champions on the podium with third place for Mercedes after he had started from P1 on the grid

thanks to a brilliant qualifying lap on Saturday.

Raikkonen had started second on the grid but made a slow getaway and was immediately passed by both Ferraris. The Finn fell to fourth place before battling back through the many pitstops and despite having a broken front wing after a coming together with Sergio Perez.

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel finished fourth, just behind Hamilton after a thrilling chase to the chequered flag, with McLaren's Jenson Button

fifth to ensure five champions in the top five places.

"We're not quite there yet, but we're not so far away," Mercedes principal Ross Brawn – whose team won in China from pole last year with Nico Rosberg – told Hamilton over the radio.

The teams had been complaining the whole weekend that the Pirelli soft tyres were so delicate that they lasted only a lap or two in top condition. Pirelli had created the delicate tyre on purpose, of course, to spice up the show. With just 13 laps left in the race, Alonso suddenly made his third pit stop after Lap 41 and lost the lead to Vettel. Meanwhile Hamilton did the fastest lap of the race and sat just 1.1 second behind Raikkonen. But after his pit stop, Alonso, with his newer tyres, retook the lead from Vettel at the beginning of Lap 43. Vettel then found himself at the

mercy of Raikkonen and Hamilton for his position on the podium, as his tyres were wearing out. Then after Lap 51, Vettel, too, had to make a final pit stop and he dropped from second position to fourth. And although his team told him to push and race to the finish, he was 11.5 seconds from Hamilton in third

place with just five laps left

in the race. Vettel tried for all he was worth and crossed the finish line just .2 seconds behind Hamilton, who in turn was 2.1 seconds behind Raikkonen.

Baptista’s late winner lifts Malaga World Cup: Two fans After the heartbreak of going out of the Champions League last Tuesday night in such cruel circumstances, and especially after the performance that the Malaga team put in, thousands of Malaga fans met the team coach as it arrived for the game, giving them a hero’s welcome. The reception in the stadium was fantastic and it seemed to bring out the best in Malaga. They started well and it was Julio Baptista that had the first chance after just two minutes. His effort was

tipped over by Fernandez, before Osasuna settled and went close with a Cejudo header. Malaga were on the front foot for most of the half, Saviola twice had efforts, with neither doing much damage. Joaquin then drilled one wide as Malaga piled on the pressure and Saviola was unfortunate not to make it count when his 12-yard drive clipped the post. Malaga keeper Willy Caballero was again at his best denying Cejudo. Baptista again forced a save out of Fernandez as

did Joaquin but, when it appeared as though there would be no breakthrough a Duda free kick fell kindly for Baptista on the 93rd minute to stroke the ball home and sending La Rosaleda into raptures and the fans gave the team a

standing ovation at the end of the match. Malaga travel to Valencia on Saturday night (10pm kick off ) with their sights set on that 4th place. Report by Scott Forbes

Two football supporters have been shot dead by rival fans in Brazil, according to media in the South American country. The incident happened in Brazil's north east, near the Arena Castelao World Cup stadium in Fortaleza. Reports by Globo suggest two men who supported Ceara were shot in the head by two Fortaleza fans in a vehicle. It is the latest in a series of issues

that have led to questions about the nation's ability to stage the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. The Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper claims Ceara fans, who had seen their side win 1-0, had earlier started a fight by throwing stones at Fortaleza supporters in an attack which happened around three miles from the stadium.

Jamie Murray & John Peers Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips beat Bryans to Houston doubles title

Briton Jamie Murray and partner John Peers beat Bob and Mike Bryan to win the US Men's Clay Court Championship. The unseeded pair saved a match point to win 1-6 7-6 (7-3) 12-10 and inflict the American number one seeds' first defeat in a final this season.

Murray, brother of world singles number two Andy, and his Australian partner also beat fourth seeds Eric Butorac and Jonathan Erlich in Houston. "Any time you beat the Bryans you're going to be happy," said Murray. "It's tough to go out against

them in a final, particularly for them playing in the States as the crowd was right behind them.

"We did well to come back, we showed good character. Slowly but surely we started to play good tennis."

Europa CC teach Colleges a lesson in cricket When Combined Colleges won the toss and chose to bat first under clear blue skies, conditions looked perfect for the second match of the 2013 Southern Spanish Cricket League. However, a combination of poor shot selection and tidy bowling soon had the batting side in trouble, confounded by

two, and there were a remarkable four catches in the outfield for Paul Lawrence.

Europa predictably made light work of the run chase, and on the back of an aggressive and entertaining fifty from Kayron Stasno, hit the winning run in the

Australia’s wait for Masters’ champion is over When Adam Scott won at rainy Augusta National on Sunday an entire nation rejoiced and breathed a collective sigh of relief. And Australia finally got the chance to celebrate some good news on the sporting scene after a miserable performance at last year's London Olympics and a run of losses against England in the Ashes cricket series.

For Scott, it was the ultimate redemption for a player who was first labeled an underachiever

when he did not contend in any of golf's four majors and eventually a choker when he did but could not win. For a country used to sporting success, the Masters had somehow managed to elude the country's best golfers for generations and winning it had become something of an obsession. During Sunday's final round the streets in Scott's home town in Australia were deserted as everyone tuned it to watch the television.

Tony Roosenburg, the director of the Australian Open golf tournament said:

“There have been a lot of black moments for Australians at the Masters. It is great for Australian golf."

Australians have won all of golf's other majors but the Masters had become a source of frustration after decades of agonizing nearmisses which started with Jim Ferrier, the 1947 PGA Championship winner, who blew a three-shot lead with six holes to play at Augusta

National in 1950. Peter Thomson won the British Open five times in the 1950s and 1960s but his best result at the Masters was fifth

place in 1957. Bruce Crampton finished runner-up in 1972, as did Jack Newtown in 1980. Then came Greg Norman, whose cruel close calls at Augusta became

Sir Bradley Wiggins will attempt to become the first British cyclist to win the Giro del Trentino this week as he builds up to May's Giro d'Italia. He chose the northern Italy race for its similarities to the Giro d'Italia as he eyes a first victory this season.

"It's the perfect setup for the Giro, with great mountains and top-notch opponents," said the Tour de France and Olympic men's time-trial champion. "I've got good feelings but can't really state what my chances are here."

torturous viewing for Australians. Norman finished runner-up in 1986, bogeying the last hole to miss out on a playoff with a 46-year-old Jack Nicklaus. A year later, he was beaten in a playoff after Larry Mize holed out from off the green, but his darkest moment was yet to come.

In 1996, Norman led by six shots heading into the final round but crumbled to shoot a 78 and finish second again behind England’s Nick Faldo.

generation of golfers to get their hands on the green jacket. Scott, who was inspired by Norman and later became close friends with "The Shark," was deemed the leader of the new generation but struggled to make an impression at the majors. His career seemed to be in freefall until two years ago when he almost won the Masters. But like his idol, he had to settle for second, tied with compatriot Jason Day in 2011.
