Plastic surgery helped Moran evade arrest

Spanish police said on Monday that one of the UK’s most wanted fugitives, Andrew Moran, had FULLY LICENSED PAWNBROKER undergone cosmetic surgery and used fake Irish and Lithuanian passports to remain on the run.

During a 15-minute hearing on Monday at the National Court in Madrid – which was closed to the public and press – Moran declined to oppose attempts to extradite him back to Britain to serve out his sentence for armed robbery.

However, the Court's judges are still considering whether to keep him in Spain for questioning about a series of crimes the police believe he committed while he was a fugitive, including drugs trafficking. If he is charged

with any new crimes, he will have to serve out any jail term in Spain before returning to Britain.

The 31 year-old was watering his plants next to the swimming pool with his girlfriend Genna Harvieu, 28, at the house where they had lived for just a month in Calpe near Alicante when agents from Spain's Special Operations Group raided the premises on behalf of the UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA). It seems that Moran, the last remaining

wanted criminal on a special police hit list, had been placed under surveillance three weeks earlier after SOCA had received a tip about his new hideaway.

The Special Operations Group later released more details of his attempts to evade capture since fleeing Britain in February 2009. In addition to the cosmetic surgery he had undergone, Moran was also about to undergo laser eye surgery because he believed his glasses would help identify him. They said he

I certainly needed a lot of energy on Sunday of last weekend. First of all I was doing my annual stint judging the PAD Dog Show that started at 11am. I like to get to places in plenty of time so we walked our dogs early in the relatively cloudy but nevertheless warm campo in Coin, then got in the car for the journey over to Mijas Village. By the time we got there, it was doing that fine drizzle thing (what I believe the Irish call “wet rain”) and I had to buy a jumper, coat and hat from one of the stalls. Mind you, they were a real bargain and it put a few more pennies in the coffers for PAD so it wasn’t a disaster anyway. The show carried on in the best traditions even though there weren’t a lot of people that had turned up due to the weather and not so many dogs. So, well done to all those doggies who had brought their owners along, well done to all the stallholders who got a bit

damp and well done to all the dogs who won prizes. Have a look at the report on page 16. Next we had a wedding to get to. Tracey and Kevin tied the knot back up in Coin and, although the sun wasn’t exactly shining, it was warm and, following a lovely service by licenced lay minister/reader Caroline Mcfarlane, we all trooped back to The Olive Tree for a slap up buffet and, of course my favourite... Moran, from Salford, Manchester, was charged with an armed robbery of Royal Mail guards in Lancashire in 2005 but absconded during his trial at Burnley Crown Court in February 2009 by leaping from the dock and assaulting four security guards. The jury later returned a guilty verdict and he was convicted in his absence. Moran was the last of seven men targeted as part of a multi-agency initiative to combat organised crime in Salford. He was also on the most wanted list for

National News Spain urged to adopt single work contract The European commissioner for employment, László Andor, suggested during a seminar in Madrid on Monday that Spain should consider introducing a single work contract as a means of stemming high unemployment, particularly among young workers, and ending the segmentation that marks the Spanish labour market. A single work contract would do away with the distinction between temporary and permanent workers. Andor told the seminar that in countries such as Spain, workers on permanent contracts are excessively protected in comparison with temporary workers, who have fewer rights. Spain has the highest

percentage of workers on temporary contracts in Europe. As Andor made his comments, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was addressing a news conference with his visiting Portuguese counterpart, Pedro Passos Coelho. Rajoy said that he was “very satisfied” with the labour reform introduced by his government in February of last year, which makes it easier and cheaper to sack workers by reducing their severance pay entitlements. “We have no intention of changing things in one way or another,” Rajoy said. “We are currently in a process of evaluation to see the effects it has had, but I can tell you we are very satisfied.” The Confederation of Spanish

Businesses has also been calling for a single work contract. Labour Minister Fátima Báñez has recognised the need to simplify the different types of contracts that exist in Spain, but the trade unions argue that this would reduce the overall stability of the labour market. Rajoy is due to meet with business leaders and labour union leaders on Thursday to discuss reforms.

829 km ride for ETA victims Two Civil Guards stationed in Navarre arrived in Madrid on Sunday after cycling 829 kilometres, one for each victim murdered by the Basque terrorist group ETA. The two Guardia arrived at 1 pm in the Plaza de la República Dominicana, where a car bomb killed 14 Guardia Civil on July 14th, 1986. They were greeted by shouts of "Viva la Guardia Civil" by the crowd waiting for them there.

Among those waiting to meet the two men, identified only as Luis and Francisco, were Madrid City Mayor Ana Botella, the director general of the Guardia Civil, Arsenio Fernández de Mesa, and the president of the Association of Victims of Terrorism (AVT), Angeles Pedraza. The two men told

the crowd they had decided to make their "long and hard" ride to remind people that ETA still existed. ETA declared an end to violence more than a year ago but the two Guardia said "people had short memories and needed to be reminded of the killings committed by ETA" over its four decades of existence.

"So we decided to make our own special homage to the victims", the two men said. They thanked Sr Fernández de la Mesa for allowing them to use the Guardia Civil insignia during the ride, "even though we were not on duty". They gave commemorative jerseys to him, the AVT president and the mayor, who also received a scarf that is typically worn during the San Fermin bullruns, sent by the mayor of Pamplona. Mayor Botella praised the

Guardia Civil for its "commitment and generosity" in the fight against ETA.

Guardia Civil director Fernández de la Mesa said he was proud of Luis and Francisco and reminded the crowd that the Guardia Civil celebrated its 169 years of service to the Spanish people the following day.

HSBC whistleblower not to be extradited The High Court in Madrid has turned down Switzerland’s request to extradite Hervé Falciani, the former HSBC Private Bank employee who has become a cause célèbre after blowing the whistle on tax evaders.

The French–Italian computer expert made off with files detailing 130,000 of the Genevabased bank’s clients in 2008 and is wanted in Switzerland on four charges relating to his data grab. The Madrid court ruled that the principle of “double incrimination” is not satisfied in this case, meaning that the offences of which Falciani is accused are not listed as such in Spanish criminal law.

espionage, violation of the bank secrecy law, revealing commercial secrets and stealing clients’ private data – but left the country and was finally arrested again in Spain last July.

The High Court also considered that the information Falciani had facilitated to the tax authorities in France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the United States was related to criminal activities that are “in no way eligible for legitimate protection”. Information released by Falciani has

allowed the Spanish government to recover more than €300 million of lost taxes between 2010 and 2011, with further related investigations still in progress.

Falciani, who had been released on bail by the Spanish courts before his April 15th extradition hearing, is now free to travel outside Spain. If the Madrid court had ruled in favour of the Swiss request, the Spanish government would have had the last word on the extradition process.

Di Stéfano's family fight against his marriage

The children of the Real Madrid football legend have asked a court to rule that their father is "mentally incapable" in an attempt to prevent his marriage to a woman 50 years his junior. The 86-year-old has been dating Costa Rican TV journalist Gina González, 35, for three years. He met her when she was hired to help research his autobiography and they will marry "within the month", the pair said last week. But Di Stéfano's five children – Silvana, Alfredo, Helena, Sofia and Ignacio – have lodged a petition with a Madrid judge arguing the need for "precautionary measures" to protect their father's estate. "In the face of the evident deterioration of his physical and cognitive faculties, awaiting a medical diagnosis on his state of health, his children have taken the decision to ask the competent court to issue a

declaration of incapacity. We believe his current state of vulnerability, together with his obvious media profile, could result in abusive conduct towards him." However, the Argentina-born striker widely recognised as one of the world's greatest footballers ever, said he would continue regardless. "I don't care what my children think. I'm in love and I'm getting married to Gina," Di Stéfano told El Mundo newspaper last weekend. "I maybe 86 but I have a young heart." The club he helped turn into the most successful in European soccer is also unhappy with his relationship. De González had been banned from the VIP box at the Bernabéu stadium until Di Stéfano

said he would not attend until the veto was lifted. Di Stéfano, made his name at Real Madrid scoring 216 goals in 282 appearances between 1953 and 1964 and is now honorary president of the club. He suffered a heart attack in 2005 shortly after the death of his wife Sara to whom he was married for 55 years. He is now confined to a wheelchair after undergoing several heart operation but regularly attends Real

Police complain of drug-induced nausea

The SUP police union made an official complaint on Friday after officers claimed that they are suffering ill effects due to 600 confiscated marijuana plants that are currently being stored at police deadquarters. The plants have been in a basement garage at the police station since May 3rd, the day that they were seized during a raid on a property in Calpe, Valencia. in the complaint, the SUP said both officers and detainees "were suffering the consequences of these narcotic substances," which were causing "headaches, nausea and alterations of their mental equilibrium". Spain's slow courts often means that drugs are stored for long periods of time in police premises, something that has led to a number of highprofile robberies of seized narcotics in recent years.

The secretary of state for the environment, Federico ramos, has said the new Coast Law, which is significantly more lenient than its predecessor, will benefit over half a million people who own homes, hotels, beach bars and other businesses right on the beachfront.

The old Coast Law, aimed at clearing the Spanish coastline of the cement that covers it following years of indiscriminate building, affected thousands of foreigners who bought properties in Spain, including many Britons. The new law will let around 1,000 hotels, 3,000 beach bars and 1,700 other businesses off the hook, even though they sit right on the beachfront.

Sr ramos said it will save 150,000 direct jobs, mainly in the tourism sector, as well as 12,800 homes built on public land, some of which were due for demolition in 2018.

Retailers in Europe, including Hennes & Mauritz and Inditex which owns Zara, have said they will sign an accord to improve safety conditions in factories in Bangladesh, in response to the collapse of the garment factory building last month which killed more than 1,100 people.

a new report by the un Food and agriculture Organisation (FaO) says that eating insects could help boost nutrition and reduce pollution. Over 2 billion people worldwide already supplement their diet with insects but the report says that "consumer disgust" remains a large barrier in many Western countries. However, it points out that insects are nutritious, with high protein, fat and mineral content. Other points in their favour are that "they are everywhere and reproduce quickly, and they have high growth and feed conversion rates and a low environmental footprint". The report suggests that the food industry could help in "raising the status of insects" by including them in new recipes and adding them to restaurant menus. It goes on to note that in some places, certain insects are considered delicacies.

The collapse of the factory was Bangladesh's worst industrial disaster. In the wake of it the government has been taking steps to try and reassure Western buyers.

'Comfort women' were 'necessary'

Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto said on Monday that the system by which women were forced to become prostitutes for World War II troops was "necessary". He said: "In the circumstances in which bullets are flying like rain and wind, the soldiers are running around at the risk of losing their lives. If you want them to have a rest in such a situation, a comfort women system is necessary. Anyone can understand that." However, he

acknowledged that the women had been acting "against their will".

Some 200,000 women in territories occupied by Japan during WWII are estimated to have been forced into becoming sex slaves for troops. Japan's treatment of its wartime role has been a frequent source of tension with its neighbours. Mr Hashimoto is famous in Japan for his controversial comments. Six years in jail for Berlusconi

Prosecutors have demanded a six-year sentence and lifetime ban from public office at the latest trial of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. They allege he paid more than €4.5 million to 17-yearold Moroccan girl Karima El-Mahroug, known as "Ruby the Heartstealer" for sex at his residence in 2010 and abused his term in office. Mr Berlusconi is already embroiled in several court cases. In the latest case, the prosecution said women invited to his private residence for so-called "bunga-bunga" party evenings were part of a prostitution ring set up for his personal sexual satisfaction. Last week Italian prosecutors requested a new corruption trial against Mr Berlusconi, who they allege bribed a left-wing senator to defect to his right-wing People of Freedom party (PDL) in 2006.

Farewell

Seventy-five thousand soccer fans saw trusted centre back Rio Ferdinand score a late goal to ensure a 2-1 win for Manchester United over Swansea in the club’s final home game involving retiring manager Sir Alex Ferguson. It was an emotional farewell for Sir Alex, the most successful manager of all time. Ferguson paid tribute to longserving midfielder Paul Scholes, who started Sunday’s game and will also retire in the summer. Sir Alex said he would still be a regular at Old Trafford. “I will be able to go along and watch them rather than suffer with them,” he said.

Offshore Trust Assets report - part 2 Last week we had the first part of a report on Offshore Trust Assets and the changes to them. This week, Andrea Speed of Speed Financial Solutions concludes her report on what the changes are and how it can affect you.

So the question is, are offshore trusts still suitable for expat IHT planning? After all, Britons living abroad who are non-UK tax resident often have no liability to the likes of income or capital gains tax in the UK. Many in the financial services industry, including prominent offshore trust companies, say NOT – the latest government changes to the tax treatment of offshore trusts make them unsuitable for most British domiciled individuals – no matter where in the world you live. IS MY TRUST AFFECTED? In short, it depends how your trust was set up: Trusts avoid the need for probate, ensuring that assets pass to beneficiaries without delay. Trusts can be used for different purposes but here I will focus on two family succession planning

trusts. A typical trust used by expats giving discretionary powers to trustees is a discretionary trust. This means that the trustees can manage when it is appropriate and decide for what purpose money is distributed to the beneficiaries. Discretionary trusts can be set up that continue to benefit their creator (settlor) – A Succession Trust – this is often used to pass on the proceeds of a Life Assurance Bond to a class of potential beneficiaries created by the settlor when creating the trust . During their lifetime, the settlor can still benefit from the trust funds, making this an ideal arrangement for expats with investment plans. However, as the settlor (creator) can still benefit during their lifetime, this trust IS NOT appropriate and does nothing for inheritance tax mitigation. Alternatively, discretionary trusts can be created specifically excluding the creator (settlor) from benefiting – A Flexible Gift Trust. This trust is used to pass on wealth to future generations with various classes of potential beneficiaries. By

New plans announced If you are heading back to Britain, then the Government’s legislative programme for the year ahead, set out in the Queen’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament, will almost certainly be of interest to you.

New measures were announced to help small businesses and people who work and want to get on in life. A Social Care Bill will end the situation where people who have worked hard all their lives have to sell their homes to fund their care when they become elderly.

An Immigration Bill will further reform the immigration system by tightening immigration law, strengthening enforcement powers and clamping down on those from overseas who abuse UK public services.

A Pensions Bill will create a simple flat rate pension that encourages saving and helps women who have had long career breaks. A National Insurance Contributions Bill will cut the cost of recruiting new employees, meaning up to 1.25 million employers will benefit, with around 450,000 taken out of paying employer contributions altogether – one third of all employers. A Rehabilitation Bill will radically overhaul how offenders are dealt with when they come out of prison.

Other measures set out in the speech are intended to help Britain compete better in the global race by cutting unnecessary regulations, modernising the rules on intellectual property and encouraging investment in the energy sector.

excluding the settlor this trust IS suitable for inheritance tax mitigation. Trusts are not universally recognised in every jurisdiction, so it is important that you take advice before implementing any arrangement. If you’re an expat and you’re concerned about the fact that your estate may be liable for IHT duties after you’re gone, you have a real obligation to your heirs to look into how best to structure your affairs to legitimately reduce their inheritance tax burden in the future. Speak to Speed Financial Solutions today – and remember that legislation changes all the time, so have regular reviews of how your affairs are structured to ensure they remain compliant and best suited to the task in hand – i.e., offsetting IHT liability. Cabinet ministers say they would vote to leave Europe As the debate over British membership of the European Union rumbles on in the British news media, two cabinet ministers have declared they would vote to leave the European Union as things stand at the moment. But Defence Secretary Philip Hammond and Education Secretary Michael Gove both say they will back Prime Minister David Cameron’s

plans to negotiate the return of some powers to Britain, putting this to voters in an in/out referendum after the next general election. Speaking on the BBC Television’s Andrew Marr Show, Mr Gove said it would be “perfectly tolerable” to cut ties with Europe and Mr Hammond told BBC Radio: “If the choice is between a European Union written exactly as it is today and

not being part of that, then I have to say that I’m on the side of the argument that Michael Gove has put forward.” Former chancellor Lord Lawson, who was originally in favour of the European Union, has called for a British exit and suggested the Tories could lose the next election, in which case, even if membership were renegotiated, there might not be a referendum.

Huhne and Pryce leave jail after only nine weeks served Chris Huhne's ex-wife Vicky Pryce (pictured left) has said she is "pleased to be home" after serving nine weeks of an eight month prison sentence for perverting the course of justice when she took speeding points for her husband a decade ago. Allegations about the points swap only emerged in the press in 2011 after the then high-flying politician dumped his wife for another woman. The

case led to the exposure of the bitter breakdown of their 26-year marriage and left Huhne's political career in tatters. Vicky Pryce, 60, and her exhusband Huhne, 58, pictured below, were both released from jail early on Monday after serving around a quarter of their sentences. The former Cabinet minister left Leyhill Prison in Gloucestershire through the main entrance, making no attempt to avoid the waiting press but also making no comment either. Pryce, 60, in contrast, emerged from East Sutton Park open prison near Maidstone in Kent through a back entrance. But on arriving at her home in London shortly before 10am, she posed for pictures and said that she would be returning to her career as an economist. Both will now have to wear electronic tags – used to enforce either a timed curfew or a place of residence. For sentences under a year, an offender is automatically freed after serving half their sentence. Those serving between three months and four years, with certain exceptions for

violent and sexual offenders, may also be eligible for release on a home detention curfew. This allows an offender to leave prison up to 135 days before their automatic release date. The pair are still yet to hear how much they will have to pay for the cost of their prosecution. The Crown Prosecution Service is seeking more than £100,000 from Huhne, but the former Lib Dem politician's legal team has offered just £25,000. Prosecutor Andrew Edis QC told the court: "All of this occurred because Mr Huhne decided to do everything he could to try and get away with what he had done and gave in only at the last minute when defeat was inevitable." But Huhne's barrister John Kelsey-Fry QC said it was "simply unjust and unreasonable to expect Huhne to pay what he described as "every single possible penny that anybody could think of". The CPS is also seeking a total of £48,695.56 from Pryce.

In the book "La cruda verdad" which made its debut on Monday – without the author who is in Alhaurin de la Torre jail – Muñoz exonerates both himself and his former wife, Maite Zaldivar, who he says was blinded by jealousy and TV fame. He says singer Isabel Pantoja, and his ex-wife are, like himself, innocent of everything they are accused of. Of Pantoja, he laments that she blames him for all the bad things

that have happened to her since she met him in 2004. He also points out that he respects justice more than justice has respected him. Journalist Miguel Ángel Ordóñez who helped him write the book says all proceeds from its sale will go the tax office "by way of repentance".

One of the charges against the former mayor – in addition to money laundering and accepting backhanders – is tax evasion. He was given a sentence of seven years and jailed immediately because of his escape risk. Pantoja is appealing against the two year’s sentence and the hefty fine she received for money laundering.

Marijuana puts Noise invades down roots Cordoba's patios Since Unesco declared Corboda's normally tranquil patios as an Intangible World Heritage, the usual sounds of water trickling out of fountains and birdsong have been banished from them for the duration of the Most Beautful Patio contest held every May.

Andalusia has always been famous for its fruits and flowers but it now looks as if the region is becoming a major cultivator of marijuana.

The hippies no longer have a monopoly on the weed, as social tolerance increases. Growing it can also provide a nice source of income, although the police usually only tolerate up to ten plants in any one place "for private consumption". Any more and it turns into a business.

Growing your own is now so widespread and acceptable that most major viveros (nurseries), which sell a variety of soils, now openly sell one especially for growing marijuana plants. However, the recent spate of marijuana plantation busts indicates that for some it is now a very lucrative business. Just recently the police

Greenhouses given to employees

The owner of some 40 hectares of greenhouses in Almeria fled last week, leaving them to 120 mainly Moroccan employees, most of whom hadn't been paid for anything up to a year.

The Andalusian Workers Syndicate of Almeria said he had promised to pay the workers a week or so ago but was unable to find the money so he left them the greenhouses in lieu of payment. He informed them a few days beforehand by text messages that he and his wife were leaving the country because they were unable to meet their financial obligations.

As they have not been formally dismissed in writing – which means they cannot claim their severance pay – the workers have decided to stay on until the end of the harvest season.

discovered a plantation of more than 13,000 plants whose owners were making a fortune exporting the end product to Holland.

IN BRIEF

The authorities now fear that Andalusia is fast becoming the "marijuana plantation of Europe".

The local authorities expected crowds again this year but apparently it has been more of an invasion, despite efforts to regulate the visits to each patio. Visiting times have been reduced to three hours for a maximum number of ten

visitors but huge queues are forming long before the 52 patios open their doors.

The contest ends on May 19th but many patio owners are already working with travel agencies to open them at

other times of the year because of the economic benefits for the city.

Business at bars, hotels and cafeterias is booming and, given these times of crisis, the income generated by the patio contest is very welcome.

Mayor's sentence to be reviewed

The Supreme Court is to review the sentence handed down to Mayor Juan Martín Serón on June 4th. in the so-called Troya urban planning corruption case he was found guilty of bribery and fined €200,000 in addition to a one-year suspension. The prosecution had originally asked for fines of $2 million, one year in jail and a suspension of three years and nine months for both Martin Seron and urban planning councillor gregorio guerra, and lesser sentences for the 11 others involved in the case. a Seville judge has confirmed the decision of the andalusian Health Service (SaS) to end the contract of a woman doctor on grounds of insufficient qualifications and of being a despot with her patients and their families and of being rude to her colleagues, calling them "drunks" and "alcoholics". The judge found that the Peruvian-born doctor, identified only as a.D.e., had not done anything to correct her short-comings or mend her highhanded ways. The judge said SaS had done the right thing to guarantee the good service and attention to users of the health service. fuengirola

But life moves on and his services are now required in Maia Zoo in Portugal, to where he will be transferred in June. The Bioparc has prepared a programme of activities to bid him farewell, details of which will be posted on its website, www.bioparcfuengirola.es. roka and asmara, the park's Sumatran tigers, will move back into the limelight after ankur's departure.

The Local Memo from Voice Madrid

Muriel Pilkington

H

ere at The News we always try to warn our readers about upcoming dangers – like the police clamping down on speeding, talking on your mobile while driving, not wearing safety belts or helmets, etc. These all are silly things that we all do absentmindedly at some time or other.

B

ut the government is up to much more serious tricks these days – trying to catch benefits abusers and in this case aimed specifically at people on the dole. We may soon find out just how many of those alleged five million unemployed really are unemployed, and not drawing dole while working and being paid black money under the table. Figures from last year, show that from January to June, the authorities caught 4,379 people collecting dole while working "under the counter" – an increase of nearly 40 per cent over the same period in 2011.

I

t's very tempting for both parties concerned – the worker gets a little extra and the employer saves on social security payments, which can be quite high when the employee is young. The government is determined to root out tax fraud and is now implementing a strategy to do just that. Unemployed people are being contacted by phone at home during what would be normal working hours and told to appear at their dole office the next day at a given time – again within normal working hours. If the person doesn't show or tries to change the day or time this could indicate they have a job and can't just pop out whenever they fancy. Or if they are unavailable on a fixed line and can only be contacted on a mobile phone this could mean they could be working abroad and collecting dole at the same time. So the authorities will take a closer look at him or her and fines are tough for both employer and employee. And of course both end up with a blotted copybook.

A

t the same time, the work inspectors are making surprise visits to work places, not giving advance warning as they used to, to catch out how many workers are not on the employers' social security lists.

I

Read your favourite news, plus a whole lot more in

t's not surprising that the government is getting fed up with all our little tricks, especially if you take into account that one in five working people in Spain are earning black money, according to the latest statistics. So both the Tax Office and the Social

Security are collecting a lot less money than they should be – which means pensions and the dole itself could become the victims of heavy cuts in the not-too-distant future.

T

Tolerance

he Left keeps ranting and raving on about this "rightwing" government which is trying to put the clock back to Franco's time. However, the online newspaper El Confidencial Digital reports a surprising case of tolerance on the government's part, the likes of which could never have happened while Franco was alive. Apparently the Planeta media group which owns the pro-government Antena 3 television group bought the proSocialist laSexta TV company last year and is allowing it to carry on denigrating and insulting Mariano Rajoy, his government and the Partido Popular without any interference whatsoever. The government authorised the acquisition to save laSexta from going bankrupt with the ensuing loss of jobs, and isn't interfering with any of the programmes' content.

Martin Delfín

Justice isn’t for all Writes for the English language version of

I

t is regrettable to see a panel of judges revoke the subpoena issued for Princess Cristina to testify in her husband’s Nóos criminal case. It is unfortunate because this would have indeed been a great opportunity for members of the Royal Family to try to restore some much needed public confidence in the Spanish monarchy. But instead they decided to fight the subpoena with the help of some powerful friends and allies who may have done them more harm than good. The Infanta Cristina was called in to testify about her knowledge of an alleged diversion of public money scheme at Iñaki Urdangarin’s nonprofit Nóos Institute. Investigative Judge José Castro of Palma de Mallorca wanted her to give a sworn statement on April 27th but that summons was put on hold after anticorruption prosecutors and the princess’s own lawyers fought to quash the subpoena.

A

pparently the person who most objects to laSexta's constant attacks on the government is not Mariano Rajoy but the president of the Planeta group, Jose Manuel Lara, who feels "uncomfortable" with the content of some of the channel's programmes. The worst offender is a comic called Wyoming and his programme "El intermedio". I've watched it a couple of times in the past but couldn't stand Wyoming's leering vulgarity. His only saving grace is that he also takes pot shots at the Socialists. I suspect he belongs to my favourite pet hate – the Communistdominated United Left.

I

know I sound a bit paranoid, but just cast your minds back to the two great Communist revolutions of the 20th century – Stalin's Russia and Mao's China. Between the two of them, they killed more people than all the other despots of the last three or four thousand years put together. Communist revolutions are just more of the same – another elite enjoying the same old privileges while they kill, torture and imprison anyone they suspect of opposing them. And there is no reason to believe that the United Front will act any differently if it ever takes power in Spain.

www.thenewsonline.es

P

Pedro Horrach

rosecutor Pedro Horrach’s argument that there was not enough evidence in the case to bring the Infanta in for questioning never held any weight. Obviously, Judge Castro saw something in the evidence that either Horrach didn’t see as important or tried to overlook. The magistrate had been examining batches of emails between Urdangarin and his wife that focused on the business. The emails were turned over to the court by Urdangarin’s former business partner now-co-defendant Diego Torres. Even though Cristina was never involved in the day-to-day operations at the non-profit entity she served as a spokesperson on the five-member board of directors. Manos Limpias, the obscure rightwing union that has been leading judicial fights against graft and corruption aimed at all of Spain’s

O

parties and institutions, had also demanded that the Infanta be called in.

n May 7th, the Balearic Islands regional High Court overruled Castro and decided to remove Princess Cristina from the official list of suspects in the Nóos case. However they asked Castro for more affirmative evidence that could point to the Infanta’s role in the diversion of public money. The judge now has begun to probe a series of purported meetings held at Zarzuela royal palace to discuss contracts between Urdangarin and several high-ranking politicians from the Partido Popular (PP), including Valencia Mayor Rita Barberá and former regional premier Francisco Camps. He has also asked all the parties involved in the case, including Manos Limpias and the Socialist Party – which filed people’s complaints in the investigation – for their opinions over the quashing of the Infanta’s subpoena.

I

t is difficult not to believe that the king and his advisors pulled a lot of behind-the-scene strings to ensure the royal daughter was never called in. But it was a poorly misguided decision that has only gone to serve more mistrust on the royals. Princess Cristina, who claims her innocence through her lawyers, should have agreed to testify. It would have been a greatly calculated move on behalf of Zarzuela because it would have reinforced King Juan Carlos’ public affirmation made during his Christmas address in 2010 that “justice is served for all”. No doubt Cristina will never be prosecuted in the Nóos scandal, but the Spanish monarchy – now at its lowest ranking ever in public opinion polls – should have allowed the investigation to run its course, for now, without pulling a sudden stopper. It would have helped restore some of its credibility.

B

ut, as we can see the bigger picture, the course of justice is slow in this country, and as time passes and more people suffer from the dire effects of unemployment, reforms and financial turmoil, the majority of the culprits partly responsible for this economic upheaval are still out on the streets as their lawyers and big interests continue to pull all the legal manoeuvres to prevent them from being prosecuted.

The weather held in Coin on Sunday - what a blessing! On a dull Sunday afternoon, the expats of Coin turned out in their finest to witness the blessing of local girl Tracey Burn and her new husband Kevin Taylor. The couple had “done the legal bit” in Gibraltar recently but, this was the part of their marriage that involved their family and friends, some of whom had known them for decades. Tracey is known to many as the girl who ran bar and music venue JK’s until last year. She was the one who made sure that you were watered and entertained. She booked bands and singers so all of us “up here in the sticks” could go somewhere local to have a great time plus have a dance to burn off some of those calories! She got together with Kevin last year and it instantly seemed like a match made in heaven. These two are the

perfect match and with the amount of laughing they do together, it is great for their friends to see them so happy. Tracey’s dress was fitted strapless ivory silk with the

bodice and a long train trimmed with scarlet. Her daughter, Katia, wore a red patterned full length strapless gown. The bride was given away by her brother Duncan Burrell who now resides in the UK but returned for the occasion. Kevin wore a wingcollared white shirt with sleeves in red backed teddy bear material and a matching tie, plus a very smart black jacket. The ceremony was held in the Sierra Gorda little park and was conducted by Caroline McFarlane, our favourite local preacher who always adds humour to the service while not taking away from the seriousness and gravity of the occasion. The ceremony was just perfect for Kevin and Tracey to pledge their love for each other in front of their guests. And to make it perfect, the

four-legged ring bearer, Martie, behaved perfectly with his red and white bowtie to match the bride and groom’s attire. Following the blessing, everyone transferred to The Olive Tree just along the road for the fun part of the day. The Olive Tree is where we in Coin now go for good food and entertainment and the buffet was, as usual, scrumptious. There were quiches and chilli chicken drumsticks, vol au vents and sausage rolls, chilli con carne and curry, plus cold meats and salads. The wedding cake was made by family friend of 30 years Edwina (I have to tell you that Edwina says if she makes another one, she won’t use as much booze… I didn’t hear anyone complaining through!). The New Energy Certificates Domestic violence awareness event There have been a lot of questions being asked recently about the “new energy law” that means you have to have a certificate saying what the energy rating for your property is BEFORE you can sell or rent it. But confusion abounds, so here are some guidelines about what you will need. The Spanish government has finally published the Royal Decree relating to a new legislation which will make it obligatory for all properties being rented or sold after the 1st of June to have “energy performance certificates”. The new decree which was published on the 5th of April is in line with the EU Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings – introduced in 2007 as part of an overall strategy to deal with climate change – and makes energy transparent by “grading” the efficiency in buildings and homes. An Energy Performance Certificate or Certificado de Eficiencia Energética (CEE) is a document which states the energy efficiency of a building based on the standardised way the building is used and number of ways in which the efficiency could be improved. The property is given a standard energy and carbon emission efficiency grade

SKY Contract Cards Only €100

from ‘A’ to ‘G’, where ‘A’ is the most efficient and ‘G’ is the least. An EPC contains information on your home’s energy use and carbon dioxide emission as well as recommendations and suggestions to reduce energy use. It measures the efficiency of the property as whole and all energy consuming elements that are integrated in it. Regardless of the final rating, improvements are not mandatory. However, the moment you advertise your property, you will be required to provide this certificate and failure to do so can result in a fine of €3000 to €6000. In addition, notaries are also obliged to request the certificate when signing over a property and tenants will be required to receive a copy of the certificate. The latest data published by the United Nations shows that Spain is number 20 in a list of countries by CO² emissions, producing just over 1% of emissions worldwide. This royal decree is essential in order to bring Spain up to European levels in the fight to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Energy efficient homes can reduce electric bills and will lead to a higher real estate quality and transparency in Spain.

10 Frequently Asked Questions About EPC: 1. Has the royal decree regulating the energy efficiency certificates been approved? The decree was finally approved on the 6th April and 2013 and will take effect from the 1st June, 2013. 2. Who can issue an energy efficiency certificate? According to the royal decree “energy efficiency certificates should be issued by qualified professional technicians who are authorised to undertake building projects and thermal installations for buildings. 3. What is an energy certificate? It is a report which details how efficient a home is in terms of energy consumption. It assigns an energy rating to each home on a scale which ranges from "A" (the best) to "G" (the worst). 4. Will I be able to sell a home which does not have an energy certificate after 1/06/2013? No you won´t. In order to make any sale an energy certificate will be required. 5. Who will have to pay for the energy certificate? The owner of the property to be sold or rented. 6. How long is the energy certificate valid for? The certificate is valid for 10 years. During this period a

new certificate will only be required if renovations are made to the property which changes the criteria as laid down in the inspection. 7. If I want to sell my home and it has a poor energy rating, such as D, E or F, am I obliged to make any improvements? No, there is no legal obligation to make any improvements. The certificate is designed to give a clear indication to anyone taking on the property of the energy efficiency of the structure. 8. Will a low rating affect the sale of my home? Can I sell it without any problems? There is no restriction on selling a home with a low rating, the only issue may be whether a potential purchaser views a property with a low rating certificate as a good potential purchase. 9. Will the technician need to visit the property (generally homes)? Yes. The only way to obtain a certificate is for a technician to visit the property, carry out a survey and then draw up the final report. 10. Will I be fined if I do not have an EPC? Yes, the government will fine all properties listed for sale or rent that do not have an EPC. Q&A’s supplied by MPA Homes.

The British Consulate in Málaga are organising an event to increase the awareness of the help that is available on the Costa del Sol for victims of domestic violence. The event arranged with support from the Mijas town hall foreign residents department will be held in the Ciomijas Hotel in La Cala de Mijas on Wednesday 29th May at 10.00 am.

Domestic violence offences account for around 30% of the arrests that the British Consulate are informed of. Rosslyn Crotty, the Vice Consul for the British Consulate said “We hope that this event will ensure that British Nationals are aware of the support the Spanish state provides for victims of

domestic violence”.

Speakers from the following organizations and groups have been invited to attend, The Women’s Centre, Mijas Social Services, the National Police, the Guardia Civil, The Soroptimists and Costa Women. The event – although primarily aimed at English speaking residents and tourists – is open to anyone, male or female, who has registered their interest by email to BCMalagaEvents@fco.gov. uk prior to Sunday 26th May.

Places are limited, so sooner rather than later.

British Passports - end of an era

A recent press release by the British Embassy has announced the end of the renewal of British passports through Madrid. As of Monday this week (13/05/2013) British passport renewals and applications must be forwarded to the overseas passport office in Belfast in Northern Ireland. To all intents and purposes the system will stay the same but there are changes to the forms, paperwork and some of the requirements. The plan to relocate all passport applications and renewals for Brits overseas was hatched some time ago. The first step was the establishment of seven regional passport processing centres throughout the world, which covered various geographical areas, Madrid being the centre for Spain, Portugal, Andorra, North Africa, Cyprus and Cuba. Slowly but surely each country has gradually changed over to the UK centre, with Spain being one of the last to go. The principal reason appears to be cost, to maintain overseas passport offices is incredibly expensive. Even when they were reduced down to just the final seven, the economies of scale compared to the number of passports issued in the UK was hard to achieve. This high cost was and still is

reflected by the price of an overseas passport, which for the time being stays the same at £128 plus costs – for an adult 10-year passport currently totalling £147.86. Previously this price was converted into local currency and adjusted as needed, now it is payable in pounds and only by credit or debit card. It is expected by 2014 the cost will come down to be more in line with the price of a passport in the UK. Those tempted to by-pass the system and apply using an incorrect or false UK residential address should note this constitutes a criminal offence that could seriously put you on the naughty step for some time. The renewal time also stays more or less the same – four weeks after the fee is taken with seasonal variations, for a first or lost/stolen passport around six weeks. There is a strong emphasis on “get it right” with plenty of warnings that incomplete paperwork may result in delays. Furthermore, all additional documentation must be

presented or officially translated into English. With this in mind a British passport can be renewed at any time, with up to 9 months being credited on to the next passport so it makes sense to renew early, at your own convenience and not leave it to the last minute. The IPS recommends you send your application using a secure delivery service or courier. Specific details on how to pay and where to send are available on line at http://www.gov.uk/overseas -passports and there is a new helpline number +44 (0) 300 222 0000 at normal rates. PAD Dog show in Mijas Village last Sunday On Saturday the sun shone and you should have been wearing a hat if you were working or relaxing outside. Sunday, sadly, was a totally different kettle of fish and it was dull and raining in Mijas. Despite the weather, quite a few dogs turned out for the annual PAD dog show in the centre of the village, plus Lisa from PAD, Lynn on the tea stall (thank goodness!), bacon butties were available and the three judges were there. The proceedings were started a little late to give people the time to turn up but it was still a drizzling cold day – better for the dogs of course, but the humans they brought with them weren’t so keen. The first of the competitions, that of Best Fancy Dress was won by Arrabella, a beautiful Mastin in her flamenco outfit, accompanied by

Suzanne, her owner.

Best puppy under 1 year saw a pretty little Podenco, Angel come first, closely followed by Spaniel Lexie with tiny Chihuahua Chico coming a close third.

In the 3rd class, Best Small Adult Dog under 12 kilos, there were two dachshunds, Freddie the black and tan short hair coming first and Bocky, the chestnut long hair coming second. Next up was the Best Adult Medium Dog 12 – 30 kilos. In first place was the lovely Toby, a white and liver English Setter. Toby was extremely at home on the first place rostrum and had no intention of moving. He seemed to love the limelight and, although he got his lovely rosette and cup, perhaps he was just waiting for a

prize for himself… maybe a bone would have been good?! PAD dog Niebla who is looking for a new loving home right now came second by a dog’s whisker. Niebla is a black and white Breton Cross and, seeing her in the ring, she would make someone a wonderful pet. She is thought to be between three and four years old and was found dumped in a cardboard box with her puppies. Can you give Niebla a home? For the 5th class, George entered with Jacky, a black German Shepherd and Suzanne with Arrabella. Jacky took first prize and Arabella second. The category for Best Veteran of 9 years and older had quite a lot of entrants who had braved the rain to join in. Aurelio, a 9-year-old Greyhound

Looking for homes

who was tall and beautifully kept, came first followed by Muggly Mug, a tiny Chihuahua, and third was another PAD dog who is looking for a home – 11-year-old West Highland White terrier Rayo. Rayo is currently residing at the PAD shelter and has a brilliant temperament. He would easily fit into a new home and make his new owners proud of him. Older dogs are, of course, much easier to take on in some ways as they are normally already house trained and, the older the dog, the calmer they often are. Rayo, with his little black button of a nose and bright eyes is just waiting to love someone and would love to share your home. Why not make an appointment to meet him? You won’t be disappointed! Best 6 legs had just two entrants this year both of

which were PAD dogs previously mentioned. Niebla with her long legs took the cup and rosette for first place with Rayo following on her heels in second. Next was the dog with the Best Trick. Bruni was the only entrant but, what a trick! He sat, got up and turned in a circle, sat again then laid down and each time he was given a treat, his little bum raised in the air and he was doing doggie press-ups. No prizes here for who came first!

The penultimate class was for Dog Most Like It’s Owner. George entered with Jackie, both dog and owner in full black with George having a very fetching red bandana round his neck to match Jacky’s red collar. The other entrant was Erica with Angel the Podenco

puppy. Both Erica and Angel were fair haired but George and Jacky just scraped by into first place.

Last, but not least, saw all the winners of the previous categories in the ring for Best In Show. After a lot of deliberation – because, let’s face it, all these dogs are winners – the Greyhound, Aurelio who, his owner said, was at his first show, won Best in Show. English Setter Toby came second with Podenco Angel gaining the last prize of the day – and another rosette to add to his collection. Needless to say, Toby once again loved sitting on his podium. This dog was just born to be a star! So, all in all everyone had a good, if a bit damp, time. Let’s hope for a bit more sunshine next year!

Pictures show, from left to right reading down, all the winners in order of the categories. The two pictures bottom right with a red border show Rayo at the top and Niebla at the bottom who are two PAD dogs seeking forever loving homes... can you help? German Friendship Day in Mijas Written by

The next Mijas day of Amistad or friendship will be on a Friday the 24th May in the large plaza in front of the town hall in Mijas village. This time it is the turn of the Germans. As with the previous two friendship days, for Sweden and Ireland, it starts with the unveiling of a small plaque on the Wall of Nations at 12.00 noon, with the German consul from Málaga, Günther Necas doing the honours. Mr Necas, pictured here with Katja Thirion (coordinator for German speaking Foreign Residents) has enjoyed several other similar events organised by the Mijas Foreign Residents Department. The format for a Mijas Friendship Day is simple, a walk about in the plaza to enjoy a display of food, music and culture from the host country. Our German friends will offer musical entertainment from The Shanty Choir singing North German maritime melodies and

traditional sea shanties, music from the German band N-340 with Jochen Janz, another choir who are actually Dutch but sing in German and a performance by the pupils of the German college school in Elviria.

Germans are famed for good appetite, top quality beer and schnapps, so rest assured that side is well taken care of. To mention a few, Rolf from Bavarian Events will create a typical “Deutscher Biergarten mit Bier vom Fass und Wurst” (a German Beer garden with draught beer and sausage). From other stalls visitors can tuck into tasty smoked fish, freshly roasted German style coffee and cakes and sample some specialist German style cooking oils and vinegars.

I

tend to divide Hollywood performers into two categories, movie stars and actors, and I place Dustin Hoffman in the later. Apart from a handful of dodgy movies in which he appeared, his Hollywood career has been as close to flawless as is possible, so I was interested to see how he fared in his directorial debut. I wasn’t disappointed.

Lo ve i s ALL Yo u Need Directed by Susanne Bier Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Trine Dyrholm

Directed by Danish filmmaker Bier who has won an Oscar and Golden Globe, this romantic comedy is about love and loss, with well drawn characters and intelligent sensitive dialogue.

It’s a tender romance for grown-ups which probably won’t win its director any more Oscars but it will reward its audience. Brosnan plays Philip, a middle-aged British businessman who

Cloud Atlas

made his life in Copenhagen and is now lonely following the death of his Danish wife. He has buried himself in his work to deaden the pain of loss and is determined his heart will never be broken again.

Danish actress Dyrholm is Ida, a hairdresser recovering from breast cancer surgery who discovers that her husband is cheating on her with a younger woman.

Their paths cross when they both head to Italy for the wedding of Philip’s son Patrick and Ida’s daughter Astrid. The beautiful Amalfi coast is the setting with lovely scenes set in lemon groves and on beautiful beaches – very Mama Mia but with no singing! Philip and Ida begin to fall in love but as the wedding day nears there are complications along the way, including the

T

arrival of Ida’s husband plus bimbo and Philip’s predatory sister-in-law, who sets her cap at him. It’s uplifting, moving and funny, with amazing scenery, and has received a warm reception from the critics.

A set of six nested stories spanning time between the 19th century and a distant post-apocalyptic future. Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across

th

centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future. Based on the award winning novel by David Mitchell.

In 1942, Henan Province was devastated by the most tragic famine in modern Chinese history, resulting in the deaths of at least three million men, women and children.

Although the primary cause of the famine was a severe drought, it was exacerbated by locusts, windstorms, earthquakes, epidemic disease and the corruption of the ruling

th

he film is set in a retirement home for musicians and aging opera singers who are preparing a fund raising gala to save the home, and much is being made of the re-release of the quartet from Verdi’s RIgoletto, as three of the quartet are residents at the home. Sissy (Pauline Collins) Wilf (Billy Connolly) and Reg (Tom Courtenay) are the protagonists, and these three seasoned actors move the film along with an amusing and charming script. Difficult decisions have to be made when one of the star gala performers is taken ill and it seems the answer appears in the form of the home’s new resident.

U

nbeknownst to Reg, the new resident is Jean (Maggie Smith), the fourth member of the quartet, Reg’s ex-wife and the love of his life. Jean is positively adverse to recreating the quartet for the gala, but I feel I would not be giving anything away when I say that she is eventually persuaded as it was an obvious route the film was taking.

N

ot much of a plot, I admit, but with such a wonderful troupe of excellent English actors, the film was a delight to watch. Michael Gambon played Cecil, the obstreperous musical director, Andrew Sachs (Fawlty Towers’ Manuel) was the conductor. Wilf was an

incorrigible sex maniac, Sissy, an endearing optimist who was sadly losing the plot and Reg giving music appreciation lessons to groups of young people, staunchly trying to forget his sad past.

M

aggie Smith of course, one of the jewels in the crown of English actresses does not disappoint, as the once famous soprano who is afraid that her voice is no longer performance worthy and wrestling with regrets of her past actions.

T

he film is set in the beautiful Hedson House in Taplow, and is punctuated throughout with classical music including, of course, lots of opera. Hoffman’s direction seems to be non intrusive and the film flows along effortlessly.

I

t seems rare these days to find a film that has no uncomfortable moments or leaves you with a message that you did not particularly want in the first place. This film is simply a joy to watch.

I

f you are a classical music lover, this film is a must, if only for the soundtrack. If you are unfamiliar with classical music, this is a perfect vehicle to discover it and its ability to lift the spirits.

T

he end credits prove further entertainment as each musical resident of the home has their photograph in the credits alongside a photograph of them in their first professional role.

I

ronically, the actors who played the wonderful quartet are the only members of the company who are not musicians, but that would have been expecting just a little too much!

TAURUS

This week you are extremely attractive and appealing to others. This alone will bring you difficult temptations to overcome. There is a need to hold fast and true to your inner beliefs, even if there is a reason or excuse to cave in. Take that inner leap of faith and believe, you want and need to be around and with all that energy your powers of observation can serve you well by giving you insights as to what you may need to ensure future prosperity. You could have reached a place that is perfect for getting over obstacles and restoring balance back into your life. New relationships and friendships are indicated and it is a great time for any social activities. You have the reputation for being a plodder Taurus – processed and planned is your preference. Take charge of the direction of your life and make the kind of break that would reflect a visible new scenery and be up for the challenge.

April 20th May 20th

GEMINI

There is a reason things are happening as they currently are, it is the things you do and the attitude you project that can make all the difference in your upcoming future, so this is a week to roll up the sleeves and to remove as much clutter as you can from your life. When you are unsure about your path the right people appear at the right times that can lead to changes or shifts in employment too giving you the chance of increased wealth.

CANCER

You have an ability to stand out and be the one that doesn’t lose heart or faith and this makes you different from the others. Others want to get as close as possible to you for various reasons, some want to be there when the magic happens and others may want to try to use you for their own advantage. It is your mission to remain true to your inner core and follow the voice that is within you. There could be temptations but make sure you hold the line.

There could be a discussion that needs finalising and it is important to get down important facts so there can be no misunderstandings later on. A transit like this that requires you to completely level and honest with others even if they may not like everything you have to say. However, they will respect your courage for saying what you believe. Take things one step at a time and you will feel good knowing that you have put in the effort to see something through.

There are outrageous opportunities for personal gain, but there are also ones that offer gain at the expense of others . All eyes are upon you this week as everybody is looking for you to take the lead and show them what they should do or say next. This is one time when you need to put your own interests first, as long as that doesn't mean selling out your inner values or the trust others September 23rd - put in but your choices can create a sea change of a difference in your life. The recent build up of emotional pressure will progressively help you reach a greater sense of direction and balance, as it comes to the surface things start to seem clearer. Pacts and agreements can be replaced now with something better and new. This can also simply mean that you and another forge a new bond and commitment regarding how you move forward. This week is about entering this new phase with a solid set of ground rules and a game plan. There could be a high position of honour and status coming your way as this transit re-kindles lost inner passions and desires in a major way and when directed with focus the world is your oyster. When you are on a roll, the last thing you want is someone to step in and slow you down. The here and now, those things in this moment, sound louder than those things out there on the horizon calling your name.

Your inner peace and calmness radiating from you is what is drawing so many people. A lot of emphasis is being placed upon your personal relationships and this is the kind of pattern can cause the unexpected to happen. Make yourself available by getting out there and living large this week. Some things have been harder than they needed to be and some people have been more sensitive and difficult than you hoped they would be – it is all set to change. Your powers of observation and personal intuition are at an all time high, you are able to sense where the right places to be are, and the right things that you need to do. It is all a matter of trusting your inner voice and following through on your insights. If you do things right the first time, the more you do, the more calmness and inner peace you will feel. The hardest part is just getting started. Romantic encounters are likely by the weekend. If you ask the universe for help or for answers, it will find a way to get them to you, even if it turns out to be an answer that you weren’t expecting. Other people will be looking to you for guidance, direction and to be their own motivating force, as they will be thinking that if you can do it, then so can they. This week all it takes is one conversation or negotiation and this could change your life in one big, beautiful fell swoop.

Bananas Foster

Buttery caramelised bananas are infused with cinnamon and rum and served warm with ice cream in this classic American dessert recipe.

Ingredients:

(Serves 4)

• • • •

• •

4 firm medium bananas 4 large scoops vanilla ice cream 50g butter 100g muscovado or light soft brown sugar • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

4 tbsp banana liqueur 4 tbsp dark rum

Directions 1. Peel the bananas and cut in half first lengthways and then widthways, so each banana is in four pieces. (If you are using fairly small bananas, simply cut in half lengthways.) Take the ice cream out of the freezer so it can soften for a few minutes. 2. Melt the butter with the sugar and cinnamon in a large non-stick frying pan over a low heat, stirring regularly with a wooden spoon until the sugar almost completely dissolves and looks shiny and is no longer gritty. 3. Stir in the banana liqueur until the sauce becomes deeply golden brown and smooth. Place the bananas on top of the sauce and increase the heat to medium-high. 4. Cook the bananas for a couple of minutes on each side in the bubbling sauce, turning

carefully halfway through the cooking time and spooning the sauce over every now and then. They need to be softened but not too mushy. Use a wooden spoon and a spatula to help turn them. 5. Add the rum and swirl around the pan for a few seconds. If you are feeling brave, quickly light the rum and stand well back until the flames subside. Simmer for a few seconds more, stirring, and remove from the heat. 6. Scoop the ice cream into four bowls and spoon the bananas and sauce around it. Serve immediately.. TIP: If you can't get hold of any banana liqueur, you could substitute with a splash more rum or any other liqueur you like.

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

The universe is advising you to stop what you are doing and to take the time to really consider what you are doing and the long term significance of what your actions may be. Remain on the positive side of the energy for your own good and do what is best for you. As long as you are solid inside and of one mind, heart and soul nothing can harm you or prevent your success. There is no doubt that you are being called to be a leader and others look to you for answers or direction.

...you don’t have to be a chef!

Last week one of my students had a problem with her car. It wouldn't start. Luckily for her a neighbour stopped and gave her a jump start and the problem was solved but it did set us thinking about what one does if a friendly neighbour is not at hand. Or the problem is something more daunting than a flat battery.

If you are insured with a Spanish insurance company it is a very good idea to be able to spell your name in Spanish and also be able to say your registration number. Maybe you can find a Spanish child who will teach you in exchange for teaching them the English equivalent. However, let's have a look at some phrases which may be useful if you find yourself with car problems. Of course, you can begin with :

Tengo un problema - I have a problem Mi coche no arranca - My car won't start. Tengo la batería agotada - I have a flat battery Hay un problema con los frenos - There's a problem with the brakes Hay un problema con el embrague - There's a problem with the clutch. La caja de cambios - the gear box

If you have a flat tyre you may need to phone for a tow truck Tengo un neumatico pinchado - I have a flat tyre. Necesito una grúa - I need a tow truck.

Well, let's hope you don't need to use any of these phrases but, if you do have an averia at least now you are prepared.

Ya está. That's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time Valerie

Obesity overshadows other weight problems

The issue of underweight school children is being missed because of an "obsession" with tackling obesity, researchers at Essex University have claimed.

Their study, presented at the European Congress on Obesity, found one child in 17 was too thin. They said weighing too little was more damaging to health than weighing too much and warned that society

was focused almost exclusively on obesity. The researchers looked at nearly 10,000 children aged nine to 16 in the east of England.

The height, weight, age

and gender of the pupils was used to work out how many were too thin. They showed 6% of all children were underweight, but it was more common in girls (6.4%) than boys (5.5%).

There were also large differences between ethnic groups. Asian backgrounds had the highest prevalence of being underweight at 8.7%. The researchers said the problem of underweight children "may be more prevalent than we thought in the

UK". They said the fear of becoming obese, rising food prices, poor diets and a lack of muscle from low levels of exercise may all be playing a role. They said attention had "absolutely" swung too far towards tackling obesity and warned children who were underweight could be being "missed", and called for better training for GPs to spot the problem and new ways of helping parents.

Research published earlier this year showed that doctors may be missing the problem. University College London academics interviewed paediatricians at 177 hospitals in England and Wales and found a lack of knowledge about the warning signs of children being underweight.

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has developed growth charts for children between two and 18 which helps doctors tell if a child has a problem.

A spokesman said: "Where children are severely underweight, it's often due to an underlying illness for which they'll need specialist medical help."But for the majority of cases, if we can get our children eating, choosing and ultimately cooking nutritious food, then we have a much better chance of preventing all sorts of dietary related problems – whether that's being over or underweight."

Told that she had an 87% chance of contracting the disease that killed her mother...

Angelina Jolie has a double mastectomy

… and praises partner Brad Pitt for his love and support at a very difficult time

Angelina Jolie has had a double mastectomy to reduce her chances of getting breast cancer after doctors told her that she had an 87% chance of getting breast cancer and a 50% chance of getting ovarian cancer due to a hereditary gene. The American actress who is married to Brad Pitt said that she had watched her mother suffer from the disease for a decade until it finally claimed her life at just 56 years of age. The 37-year-old mother of six has been praised by many for her bravery at taking the decision to undergo the mastectomies. She said that she started the process in February and it was completed in April adding: "I decided to

be proactive and to minimise the risk as much I could.” She said she had sought to reassure her children that the same illness would not take her away from them, "but the truth is I carry a 'faulty' gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer". She has also undergone reconstructive surgery including breast implants. "There have been many advances in this procedure in the last few years, and the results can be beautiful," she wrote. Her chances of developing breast cancer have now dropped from 87% to under 5%, she added. She praised her partner, Brad

Hot Pants No we’re not talking about the tiny shorts favoured by women in the ‘seventies and, most recently, by Kylie Minogue, we’re talking about real HOT pants!

Made of a “special” fabric (patent pending) the pants were tested at Brighton University in the UK between September 2011 and August 2012, then at The University of Southern California until January this year. The idea is that wearing them raises your core body temperature and raises your metabolic rate by up to 18% more than standard work-out gear, meaning that you burn more calories off the targeted areas of hips, thighs and bottom if worn

for at least 30 minutes during exercise while still not exceeding acceptable exercise-induced elevations.

Posts from users say that they sweat much more than usual and their skin feels smoother afterwards, plus of course they’re all raving about the weight loss they appear to have achieved while using them. Probably a great way to lose weight but still sounds decidedly yukky to me! However, if you want to get a pair (they also do leggings and cut-offs) you can find them online. They come in small, medium, large and extra large and cost £45 from Zaggora.com by Kym Wickham

Pitt, for his love and support throughout the procedure, and said she was reassured that her children had found nothing in the results "that makes them uncomfortable. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity," she said. "For any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have options," Ms Jolie went on to say. "I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices."

Chris Lee

Well said, J E Swenson. What he/she has recounted is perfect history. Where, in Muslim lands, do you see Christian churches – nowhere! The only tolerance has been from the Christians and the Jews, NEVER from the Muslims. Living together should work both ways, tolerance should not be so

I was asked last week by a member of another golf club what the rules of golf were in the following situation: “The ball has been played and has cleared the water hazard but, it then hits the far side and rolls back into the water. What rule must I use?” Rule 26-1 states that if a ball is known to be in a water hazard or it is virtually certain it is in the hazard a player must proceed under Rule 27-1.......the player may under penalty of 1 stroke do one of 3 things.

a) Play a ball from as near as possible at the spot where the original ball was last played. b) Drop a ball behind the water hazard keeping the last point at which the ball crossed the hazard directly between the the hole and the point at which the ball was dropped or c) Only if it is a lateral hazard (marked by red stakes) he

one-sided! You said that you would be expecting a few replies, I can only imagine that they will all be in support of J E Swenson! Editor says: This letter is in reply to a letter published in The News (Edition 224) on the 30th April from Mr Swenson about harmony or

has the option to drop a ball outside the hazard within 2 club lengths and not nearer the hole.

From what this person told me it was not a lateral hazard so option C could not be used. The point to remember on point b are the words LAST crossed. If, as they stated, the ball cleared the hazard but rolled back in, then the drop has to leave that point in line with the hole so the player has to leave the water hazard in the line and go back behind it Also note it is the point at which the ball is dropped and the hole that the entry point has to be in line with and NOT just the green.

matter.

I know many people do not fully understand this rule and if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to call me. Steve Parker Rules Secretary Miraflores Golf.

Editor says: Golfing rules are very complicated and often misunderstood or misused so, if any of our golfing readers have queries that they’d like answered, email them to us at info@thenewsonline.es and Steve will be happy to answer them for you.

A Galaxy or a Nebula?

T

Somebody asked me last week, ‘What’s the difference between a Nebula and a Galaxy?’ he word Nebula comes from the Latin meaning ‘cloud’ and up to the beginning of the 20th century if you had asked the top astronomers of the time, they would have told you that any ‘fuzzy blob’ in the night sky is a Nebula. Telescopes hadn’t developed powerfully enough to distinguish one ‘fuzzy blob’ from another. It was believed that the Universe was everything that was contained in our galaxy the Milky Way. t was not until as late as 1925 that an American astronomer named Edwin Hubble, using a 100inch telescope – which was the largest telescope in the world at the time – announced that the Universe stretches much further out than the realms of our galaxy. He discovered that some of the ‘fuzzy blobs’ were in fact galaxies themselves. his discovery changed the entire view of the Universe and was considered such a milestone in astronomical research that it was decided to christen the Hubble Space Telescope in his honour. galaxy is a collection of millions and often billions of stars all held in place by the effects of gravity. Galaxies can come in various shapes and sizes but the most popular type looks a bit like two fried eggs placed back to back. They have a central bulge packed with countless numbers of stars, and spiral arms that thin out towards the edges. Our galaxy is believed to have this shape with the Solar System situated about three quarters of the way out from the centre in one of the spiral arms. alaxies are huge, our galaxy is over 100,000 light years across and contains somewhere near 400 billion stars. At night in very dark areas we can see the Milky Way stretching across the sky from horizon to horizon. It looks like a faint band of cloud. It is so far away that it is impossible to distinguish individual stars in it, they all seem to merge together to create this ghostly light. If the Milky Way was reduced to one metre in size then all the individual stars that you can see would be inside a circle less than four millimetres across. e can’t really see the central bulge of the Milky Way simply because there are too many stars in the way. It’s a bit like saying you can’t see the forest because of the trees. It is thought that there is a super massive black hole at the centre of our galaxy. ur next nearest neighbouring galaxy is called the Andromeda Galaxy; it is 2.5 million light years away and is the most distant object that

Pat Nichols I want to thank you for a great and informative read every week by way of The News. I have lived here for nearly two decades and still find it very difficult to find out what events I can attend BEFORE the event. It seems to me that there is oodles of reporting that goes on telling us all about concerts, fiestas, trips and all manner of open days and parties after the event but, to put it bluntly, that’s a fat lot of good if you want to go to them! Many a time I have read about things that happened the week before and thought: “What a shame, I would really have liked to see / do that” and then you have to make a note in your

diary to remind yourself that, whatever it was you missed was on around that time of year and try and find out for the next year instead – not easy I can assure you – and, if it was something for a charity, they have missed out on all manner of possible fund raising from people who didn’t know about their event. So, thanks for keeping us up-to-date of what’s on and when.

Editor says: Trust me, even with us it’s really difficult to find out about events and, for charities and a lot of other events, there’s no charge for putting them in. So, if you’ve got something coming up – let us know!

can be seen with the naked eye. Until Edwin Hubble revealed that it is a galaxy in its own right outside of the Milky Way it was thought to be a nebula inside our galaxy and was always referred to as the Andromeda Nebula. nebula is a cloud of gas that is inside our galaxy, mainly hydrogen with traces of helium and other gases. They are either an area where new stars are being born or the remnants of a star that has exploded in a supernova. As hydrogen atoms begin to attract each other the gravity builds up and begins to attract more and more atoms creating the nebula. Eventually the heat and pressure that builds up over millions of years causes the nuclear reaction to occur which creates a star. sing the Hubble Space Telescope numerous nebulas have been discovered in various stages of their evolution. The Orion Nebula has shown us the stages of star evolution almost from beginning to end. Inside the Orion Nebula astronomers discovered the Horse Head Nebula the early stages of star birth. Also ‘The Pillars Of Creation’ (pictured), spectacular ‘fingers’ of nebulous clouds of gas very near to becoming stars. ikewise, when a star reaches the end of its life it will either expand to giant proportions and then collapse back upon itself leaving a ghostly circular nebula such as M57 – the Ring Nebula in Lyra. Or larger stars expand and become red giants, some of which are big enough to swallow our solar system. They then explode in an almighty blast tearing the star apart. The result is a nebula such as M1– the Crab Nebula, the deathly remains of a star that was seen to explode and light up the night sky as recently as 1054.

Alonso on fire for home GP Fernando Alonso ended a seven-year wait to claim his second home Grand Prix triumph to send the Spanish fans wild in Barcelona. Alonso was on fire in the race. From the second the lights went out, he was ‘on it’ and the Ferrari team backed him with the right strategy to ensure the 31-year-old took the chequered flag for the 32nd time in his career, in a race featuring a staggering 82 pit stops as Pirelli's degrading rubber again played far too much of a role in the outcome for all concerned. Making four stops, Alonso finished nine seconds clear of three-stopping Kimi Raikkonen in his Lotus, with the Finn having to settle for second for the third consecutive race. The Iceman though, reduced Sebastian Vettel's lead at the top of the standings to four points, with the German coming in fourth as Ferrari's Felipe Massa completed the podium.

Despite their front-row positions following Saturday's qualifying, Mercedes just went backwards with Nico Rosberg finishing sixth and Lewis Hamilton 12th and out of the points for the first time this year. Although leading for the opening 10 laps after claiming back-to-back pole positions for the first time in his career, Rosberg was soon swallowed up after the first round of pit stops. As for Hamilton, he started to go backwards from lap one as he was initially outmanoeuvred by Vettel into turn one, and then by Alonso a few corners later.

Formula One these days has become all about tyre conservation, with Hamilton's frustration coming to the fore just before the halfway stage of the 66 laps. At that point, with Hamilton having plummeted to 15th, the 28-year-old dropped behind Williams' Pastor Maldonado. Turning to the radio, Hamilton said: "And now I've been passed by a Williams!"

When Hamilton was told soon after to look after his left-rear tyre, he then replied: "I can't drive any slower." Ultimately though, it was Ferrari's pace that showed through,

allowing Alonso to move within 17 points of Vettel who was 38 seconds down at the chequered flag, with Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber fifth. Rosberg held off Force India's Paul Di Resta for sixth, with the Scot again the best of the Brits for the second successive race

as McLaren's Jenson Button came home eighth ahead of team-mate Sergio Perez.

After savouring the roars of the crowd, Alonso said: "It's very special winning at home, it doesn't matter how may times you do, it's always like starting from zero. "The last laps are very long because you want the race to finish as soon as possible, but I'm very happy for the team."

After a series of races dominated by tyre degradation the next race at the low-grip Monaco circuit should bring a

welcome change. Alonso has already given some hope to the Mercedes team, saying that they will head to the next grand prix in Monaco as favourites to win.

Mercedes have taken pole position in the last three races before dropping back, but Alonso said the difficulty of passing in Monaco would help them. "They will arrive as favourites. They've been on pole the last three races," he said after his win in Spain. "It's more difficult to overtake in Monaco... so maybe they can keep good positions for longer." Pirelli were quick to point out the spectacle of most drivers making four pit stops each was not what they were intended to create. They are already planning further changes to the tyres to address it.

Vijay Singh to sue PGA Tour over antler spray suspension Vijay Singh is to sue the PGA Tour for banning him from competition without a test for using deer antler spray. The Fijian admitted in January to using the substance, which contains small amounts of a growth hormone banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada). The PGA suspended the former world number one after his admission, but the 50-year-old successfully appealed. Singh's lawsuit, submitted in New York, claims the ban left him "humiliated, ridiculed, and emotionally distraught". According to the lawsuit, which the PGA did not

comment on, the 2000 US Masters champion was suspended for 90 days on 19th February despite there being no test in existence for the substance. When the golfer appealed, Wada advised the PGA Tour that it no longer considered deer antler spray a banned substance "unless a positive test results". "I am proud of my achievement, my work ethic and the way I live my life," said Singh in a statement. "The PGA Tour not only treated me unfairly, but displayed a lack of professionalism that should concern every professional golfer and fan of the game."

Tiger shows his teeth Women to Contest Ashes Tiger Woods claimed his 78th PGA Tour title and the richest prize in golf while Sergio Garcia became another victim of the infamous 17th hole at Sawgrass, his chances of a second Players Championship sank in the waters surrounding the island green. Woods and Garcia found themselves tied for the lead with two holes to play and the winner’s cheque of $1.1million in the balance. But after Woods made a safe par on the 17th, Garcia dumped two balls into the water short of the island green to end his hopes with a quadruple-bogey seven.

Playing partner David Lingmerth somehow ignored all the drama to hit his own tee shot to seven feet, but the Swedish rookie missed the birdie putt that would have taken him into a share of the lead and also bogeyed the last trying to force a play-off.

That meant Woods’s closing 70 and 13under-par total of 275 was good enough for a two-shot win over Lingmerth, Jeff Maggert and Kevin

Streelman. Woods is now just four wins away from equalling the record

82 PGA Tour victories of Sam Snead. It was also his fourth win in his last five events – he was fourth in the Masters last month – and a second Players Championship title coming 12 years after his first.

Garcia’s troubles continued as he found more water on the 18th for

a double-bogey six and a closing 76 to finish six shots behind. Woods and Garcia had been embroiled in a row during the raininterrupted third round after the Spaniard felt that Woods was to blame for crowd noise that interrupted his swing.

But they were kept apart in the final round as Lingmerth joined them in a share of the lead after 54 holes. Speaking after the third round, Garcia said of Woods: "He's not my favourite guy to play with. He's not the nicest guy on Tour. So it will good for both us not to play together again. We don't like each other. It doesn't take a rocket engineer to figure that out. He is who he is. I am who I am. It's best we're not playing together again."

Fond farewells and wonderful weather

Benavista Bowls Club celebrated by starting evening bowling competitions last week, organised by Richard Welton the new Competition Secretary. A great evening was had by all followed by a bite to eat. The winners of the drawn fun event were Paco, Hazel and Frances. A good night Richard, roll on the next one.

The winning Petanque team

Friday evenings we are now trying our hand at Petanque.... a different kind of bowling. All that can be said about our expertise is, we are trying!

Saturday we said farewell to Jan MacManus (pictured right). She and Steve, her husband, came to the Costa del Sol in 1995 to manage Superbowl bowling club. This they did very successfully for eight years and made a lot of friends up and down the coast, especially in the bowling community. She will be sadly missed, as Steve is, by us all.

We had a lovely day's bowling on Saturday then the club presented her with a picture of her achieving her ambition of being ladies' champion of the Club, Well done Jan – going out with a flourish.

Jan provided nibbles and drinks after our game for which we thank her. But I will put it on record that her very last bowl played on the coast was chipped (she beat me)!

All our best for your future in Yorkshire. Enjoy, think of us sometimes and realise we've lost an excellent league bowler and a good friend. Report and Frances Farmer

Over All ree Formats

The England women's cricket team will face their Australian counterparts over all three formats of the game in August with the winners of the Ashes being decided on a points system, officials said on Tuesday.

Women from the two countries first competed against each other in a series to mirror that of their male compatriots in 1934 and the contest became a biennial test series in 2001.

The next version taking place in England later this year, however, will comprise one test match, three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 encounters. Winning the test match will be worth six points with a win in each of the limited overs matches worth two points. The

The Australian women’s team currently hold the Ashes

winner of most points claims the series and the Ashes trophy.

"The women's game has seen huge growth in interest and profile as a result of the limited overs formats in recent years," Clare Connor, head of England women's cricket, said in a news release. "The new women's Ashes series looks to combine this reality with the prestige and tradition of test match cricket.

"We believe that this new multi-format series will gain significantly more profile and context than can be generated by playing a one-off test match every couple of years."

Australia hold the Ashes after reclaiming them by winning a single test in Sydney in January 2011. The trophy was created in 1998 and contains the ashes of a bat signed by both of the teams that contested the series that year.

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips

A number of people have asked me how do you play Stud, well here are the basic rules to get you started.

Before the start of the Texas Hold'em boom over 10 years ago, Stud had always been the most popular poker variation in the United States. The game is played with two to eight players. Probably the biggest difference between 7 Card Stud and Texas Hold'em is that 7 Card Stud is a non-flop game. Each player gets dealt a total of seven cards, of which three are dealt face down and four are dealt face up. From these seven cards the player has to choose his best five-card combination. The hand rankings are identical to those in Hold'em; a Royal Flush is the best possible hand and the worst hand is the high card hand (no pair). Every player starts off with getting dealt three cards; two cards facedown and one card face-up. The two facedown cards are called the 'hole cards' and the faceup card is called the 'door card'. Based on these three cards you decide whether or not you want to continue with the hand. Like in any poker variation, hand selection is extremely important in 7 Card Stud.

Antes, bring-in and betting

Every player pays an ante before getting dealt any cards. In our example we are playing a 1€/2€ Stud game with a 0.10€ ante and a 0.50€ bring-in. The three cards are dealt and the player with the lowest door card is forced to pay the bring-in of 0.50€. This player can also choose to bet 1€, which is called 'to complete'. The betting continues clockwise around the table, with players having the option to call, raise or fold. Once the betting is complete,

every player left in the hand is dealt a fourth card (4th street). Now, and in all rounds still to come, the player with the highest up-cards is the one who starts the betting.

The minimum bets for the remainder of the hand are: 4th street: 1€ 5th, 6th & 7th street (the river) : 2€

Man City sack manager Mancini

Roberto Mancini has been sacked as Manchester City manager a year to the day since winning the Premier League. The club said he "had failed to achieve any of the club's targets, with the exception of qualification for next season's Champions League". Assistant Brian Kidd will take charge for the final two games of the season and a tour to America in late May. Malaga's Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini has been strongly tipped to replace Mancini.

Málaga still looking for win Real Madrid 6 : 2 Málaga Málaga 0 : 0 Sevilla Following their defeat in Granada last weekend, Málaga faced a tough week, with the game against Real Madrid bought forward due to their participation in the Copa Del Rey and another Andalucian derby against rivals Sevilla. The game against Madrid on Wednesday couldn´t have started any worse. After just three minutes Raul Albiol found the back of the net with an unmarked header. Málaga came back though after quarter of an hour with Santa

Cruz tapping in an equaliser. Things got worse for Málaga when defender Sanchez got a straight red for dragging back Ronaldo which resulted in a penalty. Willy Caballero made the save to keep the scoreline level. The Argentine appeared to injure himself in making the save and was substituted before the break, but not before he gifted Madrid a third goal two minutes later. Camacho was adjudged to have passed the ball back to Caballero who picked it up, gifting a free kick to Madrid just 5 yards from the goalline. Despite Málaga packing the

line, Ronaldo hammered the ball into the back of the net making the score 2-1. Ten minutes later Ozil made it 3-1 with a goal on the break. Three minutes later Málaga´s Antunes scored with a great shot, giving Málaga some hope going into the break. However these hopes were dashed when Benzama got Madrid´s 4th goal at the end of the first half. The second half was a more quiet affair compared to the first and it was a massive uphill climb if Málaga were to get anything from the match. Modric made it 5-2 after 63 minutes following good play between himself and Alonso and Málaga´s night got even worse when Demichelis received a second yellow and Málaga were left with nine players for the last twenty minutes. On 90 minutes Di Maria completed the rout and a battered Málaga left Madrid with a 6-2 defeat. Málaga had to pick themselves up for another Andalucian derby on Sunday against fierce rivals Sevilla. Both teams were looking to gain ground in their respective European campaigns. Málaga made a bright start to the game and appealed for a penalty after two minutes when Juan Cala intercepted a pass from Isco with his

shoulder, but the referee did not give the penalty. Negredo had Sevilla's first real chance, shooting wide of the near post after a cross from Alberto Bueno. It was the first of several clear opportunities the visitors created in the opening 45 minutes. Ivan Rakitic headed a cross from Diego Perotti wide, then Coke forced a good save from Kameni, before Negredo volleyed just wide of the post. Kameni had to be alert again early in the second half to keep out a header from Cala. Málaga´s strike force looked pedestrian and never looked like breaking the deadlock, with their only chance of note in the second period being a long range effort from Duda which did not trouble Beto, who had very little to do all evening. In the end the best chance of the game fell to Rakitic with 15 minutes remaining, Negredo crossed to the Croatian from inside the area but the midfielder headed into the side netting. Málaga now have a break until the weekend after next when they take on Deportivo in the last home game of the season. With all the speculation of Pellegrini going to Man City we should know by then his fate. Report by Danielle Moss

David Beckham creates history with title win in France There may be continuing uncertainty over their coach Carlo Ancelotti's future, but what is beyond doubt is that Paris St-Germain are Ligue 1 champions. They sealed a first French league title in 19 years thanks to a solitary Jeremy Menez goal at Lyon, a fine 53rd-minute finish from Thiago Motta's pass. David Beckham got in on the act as a late substitute for Menez, and became the first English player to win a championship in four different countries (England, Spain, USA and France).

Laura Robson beats Venus Williams in Rome

Great Britain's Laura Robson beat seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams in the first round of the WTA event in Rome. Robson, the world number 39, broke the American's serve on six occasions to win 6-3 6-2. Williams, 32, currently ranked at 24, struggled with a back injury that has limited her to only four other tournaments so far this season. Robson will meet Venus's sister Serena, the world number one, in round two. With the French Open beginning on 26th May, Robson has earned another big win on clay following last week's run to the third round of the Madrid Open.

Britain's Alex Dowsett wins Giro time trial as Nibali leads

Britain's Alex Dowsett overshadowed Sir Bradley Wiggins as he powered to a surprise win in the first individual time trial of the Giro d'Italia. Dowsett, the British time trial champion, faced a long wait after setting the pace over the 54.8km course having started 39th of the 201 riders. Wiggins recovered from a puncture to finish second, 10 seconds behind. But Vincenzo Nibali was only 11 seconds further back to take the overall lead, with Wiggins now fourth, 1'16" adrift.
