Help for Heroes rejects donations from EDL
Armed forces charity Help for Heroes announced on Monday that it will not accept donations from the far-right English Defence League.
EDL leader Tommy Robinson started fundraising after the murder of soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich last Wednesday, but a Help for Heroes spokesman said a fundraising web page set up by Mr Robinson would be closed, and no EDL donations would be accepted.
The charity said it does not accept donations from any political party. The spokesman added: "He's the only one that's come to our attention but tonight
we'll be doing a crosscount to make sure that anyone else that's saying they're EDL will not be allowed to fundraise for us. It's the same for any political party, we don't allow political fundraising. As a charity, we're nonpolitical."
Mr Robinson's fundraising page showed he had raised more than ÂŁ3,300 and he was aiming to raise ÂŁ5,000 with a sponsored walk across London, but the page has now been closed.
On the page, he wrote: "I am going to walk from Westminster in west London to Woolwich in east London (just over 17 miles) to lay a wreath in support of our troops (Lee Rigby RIP).
"I plan to raise as much money as possible for Help for Heroes." As clashes between EDL supporters and antifascist protesters continued across the country, Scotland Yard said a total of 13 people

Most of you that read my column will know that I’m a bit of a chocoholic – cakes, pies, anything that doesn’t have nuts in (allergic) and does have chocolate I’ll eat it and therein lies the answer to why I have fat bits! What you probably don’t know is that I’m also a bookworm. I love them and have hundreds and, in fact, the thing that gets built more than anything in our house is new bookshelves for all the latest ones I’ve read. Generally, I like murder and mayhem with Jack Reacher being one of my favourite characters. Of course, the good guys win more often than not, putting the world to rights as they go. But recently I’ve been trying a few different genres. “The Suspicions of Mr Whicher” was a good one and my most recent read (bar one called “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” which I read last night) was by Markus Zusac called “The Book Thief”. It was an utterly marvellous read once you got over the

This last week was horrendous with the killing of soldier Lee Rigby on the streets of London. I am not particularly religious myself so I don’t care what type they were following. This was just abject unacceptable viciousness perpetrated on an unarmed victim. For this kind of crime where there can be no mistake who did it. I think they should be put down like the dog that killed grandfather Clifford Clarke.
Of the 10 people arrested so far, five have been bailed and two released without charge.
Two suspects, Michael Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22 – both Britons of Nigerian descent who are understood to be converts to Islam – remain in custody in hospital in a stable condition after being shot and wounded by police at the scene after the killing. The Metropolitan Police said the men would not be questioned until they had been discharged from hospital, and the time they had spent under arrest so

On Sunday, Home Secretary Theresa May said the government would consider if it was necessary to introduce new laws to tackle extremism.
With regards to Prevent, she said the government had already made improvements, including a new programme designed to reach beyond "extremists" to those not immediately at danger of radicalisation – people she described as "further out".
She also said it was "essential" police and intelligence agencies had access to information such as emails and internet data to help counter extremism.

Princess probed for alleged tax fraud The judge in charge of the probe into the business affairs of royal son-in-law IĂąaki Urdangarin is to investigate whether his wife, Princess Cristina, committed tax irregularities and money laundering in the period from 2007 to 2010. Judge Castro officially named Princess Cristina as a suspect in the NĂłos case in April. However, her lawyer and the solicitor generalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office opposed his decision and the regional High Court in Palma de Mallorca suspended the infantaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s indictment order earlier this month after ruling that there were no signs she was aware of her husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s alleged illegal activities.
However, the courtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ruling left the door open for the infanta to be investigated for possible tax irregularities.
Judge Castro has requested the tax declarations of Princess Cristina for the past 10 years and also asked the tax authorities to determine whether funds allegedly obtained from fraudulent activities where used to purchase the luxury home of Urdangarin and his wife in the Barcelona area.
Speed limit to be raised The government is planning to include the Traffic Authority's suggestion that the speed limit could be raised to 130 kph on stretches of highways and motorways considered "safe" and lowered to 50 kph on stretches of other roads
considered dangerous, which account for 75 per cent of fatal road accidents.
Trafico has also suggested that the speed limit for some urban streets should be reduced to 30 kph or 20 kph. The

Suspects held for Visser murder Police in Valencia have arrested three men in connection with the disappearance and alleged murder of a Dutch champion female volleyball player and her partner, who both went missing in Murcia on May 13th.
The bodies of Ingrid Visser, 36, and Lodewijk Severin, 57, were found partly buried in a field near the small town of Alquerías. The suspects arrested were identified as 36-year-old Spaniard Juan Cuenca Lorente, and two Romanians, Valentin Ion, 59 and Constantin Stan, 47.
Police chief Cirilo Duran said the couple had met the three men at a farmhouse in the town of Molina "for business reasons". He said both victims “died under violent circumstances,” and the suspects allegedly tried to bury their bodies but didn’t dig holes that were deep enough. Sniffer dogs helped to find where the
bodies were buried. The suspects are believed to have links to organised crime in Eastern Europe.
Visser, who was a member of the Netherlands's gold medalwinning team at the European Championships in 1995, and played for a volleyball team in Murcia between 2009 and 2011, was last seen with her partner on May 13th when they left the ChurraVistalegre Hotel in Murcia where they were staying. The pair reportedly came to Spain for medical treatment. Their rental vehicle, a Fiat Panda, was found some days later parked in the town centre.
The case had sparked intense media interest in the Netherlands, where Visser lived with her boyfriend. A Dutch officer is also taking part in the Spanish investigation.
Annie Leibovitz wins Prince of Asturias prize US photographer Annie Leibovitz has won the prestigious Prince of Asturias award for humanities in Madrid.
One of the world's top portrait photographers, the jury hailed her as a "driving force" in photojournalism. Her shots have made the front pages of magazines such as Rolling Stone, where she started her career in 1970, and Vogue, for which she has worked for the last 15 years. She is also a contributing editor at Vanity Fair.

The jury said her pictures "reflect an era of politics, literature, film, music and sport". Leibovitz will be presented with the €50,000 prize, one of Spain's highest honours, in October. The Prince of Asturias communication and humanities award is given to an individual or institution whose work promotes the "humanistic values that form part of mankind's universal heritage". Previous winners include The National Geographic Society and Google.

EU ends arms embargo on Syrian rebels European Union foreign ministers have agreed not to renew the union's arms embargo on the Syrian opposition, due to expire on Saturday. But there was no immediate decision to send arms to Syrian rebels and all other sanctions remained in force, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said.
She said the EU's Foreign Affairs Council would review this position before August 1st, in light of fresh developments to end the conflict including the ongoing US-Russia peace initiative. Now
individual member states will have to decide what their own rules are regarding sending arms to Syria. "Member states shall require adequate safeguards against misuse of authorisations granted," the joint EU text said.
Britain and France had been pressing for the ability to send weapons to what they call moderate opponents of President Assad, saying it would push Damascus towards a political solution to the two-year conflict.
EU disagree on China tariffs The UK and Germany are among at least 14 European Union members opposed to punitive tariffs on Chinese solar panel imports, diplomats revealed on Monday.
The European Commission – the EU's executive arm – argues that Chinese firms are unfairly undercutting rivals. It claimed China was pressuring members to oppose the duties, a day after German Chancellor Angela Merkel hinted in favour of a negotiated
agreement. France and Italy are among those in favour of the duties while Germany, the UK and the Netherlands are in the opposite camp, according to the diplomats.
On Monday, French Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg said: "We want to see a balanced relationship between China and the European Union." He told reporters: "Countries that use protectionism – and China is one of them – should accept reciprocal rules."

Land reform agreed The government of Colombia and left-wing Farc rebels agreed on Sunday on fair access to land, and rural development – two key causes of the armed conflict.
A joint statement issued in Havana, Cuba, said: "This agreement will be the start of a radical transformation of rural Colombia." The deal calls for the economic and social development of rural areas and providing land to poor farmers. Land reform is one of the most contentious issues in the
talks on ending five decades of conflict. But both parties have stressed that nothing is finalised until a complete peace accord is reached.
The Farc, Colombia's largest guerrilla group, has been in talks with the government on the Caribbean island since last November. The government estimates that 600,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in the 1960s, with some three million more internally displaced by the fighting.

Spokesman Monsignor lucker has said the Church is running out of wine to celebrate Mass because of nationwide shortages of basic supplies. Monsignor lucker added that they had enough supplies for just two more months, and that he did not know if the Church could afford wines from abroad. Critics blame the shortages on tight state control of the economy and inadequate domestic production, but the government insists that an opposition-led conspiracy and price speculations are the problem. Oil-rich Venezuela relies on imports, but currency controls have restricted its ability to pay for foreign goods, a reason for the shortages. Railways to test anti-graffiti drones
The national railway company, Deutsche Bahn, plans to test small drones to try to reduce the amount of graffiti being sprayed on its property. The idea is to use airborne infra-red cameras to collect evidence, which could then be used to prosecute vandals who deface property at night. A company spokesman said drones would be tested at rail depots soon. Graffiti is reported to cost Deutsche Bahn about €7.6m a year. German media report that each drone will cost about €60,000 and fly almost silently, up to 150m above ground.

Pay day loan companies may be investigated
Leave our cheese alone! Every year on Coopers Hill near Brockworth in Gloucestershire, an 8lb round of Double Gloucester cheese has been rolled down the hill with dozens of (mostly) men thrill seekers from all over the world chasing it through grass, brambles, nettles and anything else that will grow on the steep slope, slipping, falling, and pelting hell for leather after it with the first to grab and hold on to it being hailed the winner.
However, Health and Safety has stepped in and this year the cheese was replaced by a lightweight foam version following warnings to 86-year-old Diana Smart, provider of the cheese, that she could be prosecuted if anyone was injured. Now you don’t have to be a scientist to know that a bit of lightweight foam is not going to go down the 200 metre 1:2 gradient as fast as a hefty great lump of the real stuff, even if it is “safer”.
The cheese rolling was cancelled in 2010 due to safety fears and, this year, there were a good many police officers checking on the unofficial event but they let it go ahead with around 2,000 people watching.
Regular winner 25year-old Chris Anderson wasn’t there this year as he had been posted overseas with his battalion 1 Rifles so this year’s winner of the first race was an American, Kenny Rackers, 27 from Colorado Springs in a stars and stripes morph suit. He said he had seen the world famous event on
TV in previous years and just had to win it adding: "It feels great, I trained a long time for this and got hurt on the hill practising. I came three days early and I took a bad spill but I came to win and that's what I did. I came 3,000 or 4,000 miles just for this race. I put it on my bucket list and today it was to win and that's what I did."
So, if so-called sane adults want to hurl themselves down an incredibly steep hill, they don’t need Health and Safety to tell them they can’t … It’s called having FUN! And if people can run in front of bulls in Pamplona, why not cheese in Gloucestershire? Leave alone!!

In nine out of ten cases where people had applied for the infamous “pay Day” loans – some of which have over 3000% interest rates! – they were not asked to provide the companies with evidence that they were able to afford to pay them back according to a recent survey. The Citizens Advice Bureau looked at feedback from pay day loan customers who had used over 100 such companies gathered between November and May. 75% said that they had struggled to pay the loan back and 84% when they told the companies they were having problems, were not offered the chance of more time to pay with their interest rates frozen. It further found that some
lenders had taken more than they were entitled to and had refused to give refunds. What’s more, loans had been given to under 18’s, people with mental health issues and people who were drunk when they took the loans out. It also found that people were being chased for loans they had never taken out.

Sofía Reguera's story is the stuff of soap opera. Her mother was practically still a child when she went to work as a servant at the home of the local landowner. As was the custom at the time, his only son seduced her.
The affair was ignored until she became pregnant, when the landowner told her to go to the nearest town to give birth and that when she returned with her child he would arrange for her to be married to his son.

First embargo halts woman’s eviction
The Junta de Andalucia's official gazette announced proceedings last week to temporarily embargo the home of María del Carmen Andújar in Huelva following a request from her to stop the eviction proceedings initiated by a mortgage securitization corporation.
The firm, A Y T Mixto III, has 15 days to present its arguments against the embargo. This was the first such action initiated by the Andalusian regional government after it approved a decree last month allowing for the seizure for up to three
years of the homes of the neediest families facing eviction.
Sra Andújar met the criteria established for such embargoes, which include having a monthly income of under €542 and having suffered a significant deterioration in one’s financial situation – such as the loss of employment – subsequent to the mortgage being granted.

Missing girl Amy Fitzpatrick, murdered brother Dean Fitzpatrick
The brother of Amy Fitzpatrick, who was last seen alive walking home from a friend’s house near Mijas on New Year’s Day 2008, was stabbed to death on Saturday night in the Coolock area of north Dublin.
Witnesses said Dean Fitzpatrick staggered out of an apartment block just after 11 pm and was rushed to nearby Beaumont Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The chief suspect, who at press time had not been named, was in the apartment with Mr Fitzpatrick and three
other people but left the scene before the gardaí arrived.
However, he handed himself in to the gardaí late on Sunday morning. He was questioned for a number of hours before being arrested just before 2pm the same day. The 42-year-old man was released without charge on Monday, after the Public Prosecutor's office decided there was insufficient evidence to charge the suspect with any crime.

Police presence stepped up
To fight a rise in violent house break-ins, Police Headquarters have decided to put another 50 officers from the Police Intervention Unit on the street this summer, when this type of crime tends to increase. Marbella police chief Daniel Salgado said figures showed that this type of crime had dropped last year in comparison with 2011, although they had also shown an increase of two per cent for the summer months. The City Council plans to promote the Natural Park located at the mouth of the guadalhorce river just south of the city as a tourist destination for bird lovers. t's not often I have a good word to say about former PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero – but we should give credit where it's due. Last week, he said during an interview that he would never criticise his successor – at least in public – unlike the man who made Mariano Rajoy his successor in 2004. Zapatero was referring to an interview Jose Maria Aznar gave to Antenna 3 last week, in which he called on the government to reverse the tax hikes introduced by Rajoy and criticised the Partido Popular's "lack of direction". To cap it all, he hinted that he would not rule out a return to political life.
t's an unwritten rule here in Spain that former PMs don't criticise their successors and by and large most of them stick to that rule. Aznar's "performance" – which some political commentators likened to a drama queen's and others to Dracula "threatening to come back and terrify us all" – was uncalled for to say the least. Rajoy and his government need all the support they can get in these difficult economic times and the mildest adjective used to describe Aznar was "disloyal".

f he was testing the waters for a possible comeback, as some believe, he must have been dismayed by the reaction to the interview, with brickbats being hurled at him from all sides, including his own party. Rajoy rose to the occasion and answered six times to the same question at a press conference – what do you think of Aznar's interview – that "I am not in the habit of criticising my predecessors". Every time the reporters insisted on asking him the same thing, his smile broadened just a little bit each time until he said: right, let's get on with it. Even his enemies praised him for not rising to take the bait.

hen asked a question along the same lines on National Radio, Zapatero said: “Criticism of Rajoy will not emerge from my mouth. apatero has been pretty silent since his party was thrashed by the PP in the November 2011 election but then he has a lot to be silent about. It was his selfserving refusal to acknowledge the economic crisis in the months leading up to the 2008 general election that landed us all in the current pretty pickle. His silence then may have helped his party to win re-election but by the time the next election came around most voters realised just how much damage it had caused and gave the Socialist Party the worst electoral thrashing it's had since the transition to democracy.

King Juan Carlos appointed him prime minister on July 4th, 1976, and he led the country into its first free election since Franco's death on June 15th, the following year. During that time, he legalised all the political parties, including the Communist Party, and the trade unions, without which there could have been no fair, free elections.

lthough he proved unable to build the new democracy as efficiently as he had dismantled the dictatorship, he consistently comes in first in political polls that ask people who the best prime minister was. Gonzalez comes second, followed by Aznar, with Zapatero fourth, way behind the others. It remains to be seen how Rajoy will fare in a similar opinion poll after he leaves office.

here is some good news and some bad news coming out of Brussels these days. The European Commission wants Spain to tighten the screws on its reforms now that the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy hasn’t been able to keep its promises in implementing his proposed adjustments under a timetable that had been given to European commissioners. Now the EC will act on its own and push Madrid to speed up certain policies that for months have been on the back burner, including the introduction of a single work contract (which the PP says could be unconstitutional), pension reform (an area where Rajoy has been hesitant to act because it will cost him votes with the elderly), and higher taxes on health products, medical supplies and energy. The PP is still reluctant to hike taxes on beer and alcohol, especially at the start of Spain’s tourist season, because they could, officials say, greatly affect the food and beverage industry. I beg to differ. If people on holiday want a cold drink, they will pay that few extra cents for a bottle of beer or a glass of tinto de verano.

hat was the bad news. Europe, nevertheless, wants Madrid to do more to protect people from becoming victims of foreclosures. A new draft mortgage law, which is in the works by the PP government, aims to adopt a European Court of Justice ruling handed down last March in the case of a homeowner in Barcelona who lost his property to Caixacataluyna bank over what he said were unfair terms. In an opinion drafted on May 22nd, European Central Bank president Mario Draghi said that foreclosures in Spain should “be the last resort” in any case. “Secured lenders should be interested in avoiding foreclosure proceedings, which are expensive and generally generate lower proceeds than voluntary sales, where the mortgagor continues to meet all or some agreed
part of their repayment obligations,” Draghi wrote. What would be ideal, according to the ECB chairman, is to allow lenders to negotiate with clients who are in arrears. The proposed mortgage reform law calls on banks to initiate proceedings only after homeowners fall three months behind payments.

ccording to Bank of Spain data as of 2012, 39,167 homes have been returned to lenders – 18,195 of these through foreclosure proceedings.“Only a comprehensive resolution strategy can address the challenges that arise in the face of changed economic circumstances of borrowers, significant changes in property values and the potential for resultant unviable mortgages, whilst maintaining appropriate incentives for both the debtor and creditor, and minimizing the potential for moral hazard,” the ECB said.

t isn’t difficult to see where Brussels is coming from, but Rajoy and French President François Hollande want the European leaders to do more in promoting growth and jobs for young people. As days pass – and people literally going hungry in Portugal, Greece as well in many parts of Spain – the social situation is becoming even more volatile, even explosive, in some countries that we might not have expected to hear much about the effects of the crisis, such as in normally peaceful Sweden, where hundreds of protesters have burned cars and vandalised buildings.

urope wants Spain and the rest of the EU members to race against the clock to implement reforms, but Brussels also realises that it is under the gun to show some flexibility otherwise its entire European project will soon begin to disintegrate.

Mijas International Festival 2013 Roll up, roll up, for all the fun of the Fair!
The Mijas International Festival weekend starts this year at 8.00 pm on Friday June 7th and again on the Saturday and Sunday at midday. Mijas International Festival is one of the most popular on the Costa del Sol – with twenty-one different countries participating, this colourful show of culture, food and music is just as impressive as the atmosphere it creates.
The event and all the stalls this year will be focused around the – soon to be remodelled – main Plaza in front of the Mijas town hall. This is a return to the style of the much smaller original first one- day International Day from 1989. Which makes this year a special silver celebration, an unbelievable 25 years of Mijas festivals. Posters and adverts for this year are based on the original 1989 poster which symbolised Mijas – the sky, the sea and the land – both are by Andalucían artist José Maria Córdoba.
Throughout the three days the twenty-one stalls and the two stages will represent a kaleidoscope of culture from some of the many nationalities who call Mijas home, hosting all manner of entertainment from Belly Dance to Bolivian Street Parades, Flamenco to the International Flag Dance.
In addition to all the fun of the fair, there are two interesting exhibitions. One by the Friends in Focus photographic society is in the Mijas tourist office, showing photographs of various Mijas International Festivals over the years. The second exhibition also commemorates 25 years of the International Festival with more photographs from the original International Days, taken back in 1989 and 1990. In addition, look out for an innovative exhibition from the Mijas Municipal Historic Archive Department. This
exhibition titled “Foreign Residents in Mijas – 450 Years of History”, depicts a collection of fascinating documents and records from the early foreign residents of Mijas, as far back as the 16th century through to the present day.
For entertainment in the evenings the festival is equally rich – with food and beverages as varied as British Fish and Chips and a pint of Tetley's to German Sausages or an Indian curry with a glass of Guinness. The entertainment abounds too, from Dutch Choirs to Thai Dancers. On Friday there’s a Latin Party from 10.30 pm onwards, the principal act
Oswaldo Enrique and his American Combo Orchestra do the musical honours with their performances of catchy up- tempo Salsa and Merengue dance numbers. Centre stage in the plaza on Saturday at 10.00 pm there is a special tribute by main act, The New Jersey Boys to singer Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. A roller coaster of a show including the hit songs “Big Girls Don't Cry", "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", "Oh, What A Night", and "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?". Followed by shows with acts from around the world. Sunday from 7.00 pm is another full evening of spectacular shows starring Matt and Maxine, leading dancers from Riverdance on Tour, followed by a very lively and talented Celtic fusion band, RR Radio Gee. Playing under the catchphrase “A Good Time Guaranteed”
this is a re-grouped allaction version of several excellent Málaga bands, including the amazing Celtic Tigers. The final show complete with a Celtic piper and violin is The Goatskin Bag Band. Ten years old and growing
Ten years ago, in 2003, Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva was officially registered as a charity on the Costa del Sol, formed to give advice, information and help to older people – of all nationalities – in the area. Work had started in 1991 to form a group of people who helped to set the charity up and recruit a band of volunteers to work in the community and raise funds. To celebrate this birthday a lunch was held in Nueva Andalucia and over 50 volunteers for Age Concern attended and enjoyed a fabulous meal and get together. The first President of the charity was Vera Ivers who was able to make the trip from the UK to attend the meal and say a few words about the formation and work of the
organisation, how it has grown, and is continuing to grow. During the 10 years a shop has been opened as well as a dedicated Drop-In-Centre She said that when she visits the coast she is so proud of the organisation and what it has achieved. She paid tribute to all of the volunteers, past and present, who have made the charity the success it is.
The current President, Eileen Dry, thanked Vera and mentioned the need for more volunteers to be recruited. All who attended, including the British ViceConsul, Rosslyn Crotty, agreed that the event was a success and have been enthused by the commitment of all of the volunteers and the Executive Committee.

Energetic youngsters put their best foot forward during the British School of Marbella's annual Sports Day last Friday. More than 100 children took part in the competition that included a sack race, a relay race, an egg and spoon race and a running race for each year group. Paco is a great little character who has no problem with other dogs but he is unsure of cats. FAMA rescued him from Paraiso.
He is very good with people, loves to be made a fuss of, and is in good health. He’s a really charming little fellow who walks reasonably well on the lead, but could do with
a little more educating and training on one as he obviously has not been used to a lead. He has a very good character, showing no aggression whatsoever and will make someone a lovely family pet.

A quiet and Cudeca Marbella Burger & chips re-opens charity night retiring chap? After 27 years and 26 days Mike Thompson, the owner of The Bee’s Knees in Benalmadena Costa, is retiring.
You may remember Mike and The Bee’s Knees from the Channel 4 TV programme The Coast of Dreams on which Mike and his wife Betti were asked to advise newcomers to the Costa on how to set up their business to be a success. Mike, pictured below, who is originally from East London, was a sales director of a company specialising in quality colour reproduction before coming to the “Coast of Dreams “ and setting up
the pub which he ran together with Betti for 16 years, then for another 10 on his own with, of course, very able assistants.
Mike who is now 71 and has decided that he wants some ME time. He will spend his days playing some more golf, travelling and visiting his children who live in such diverse places as Scotland, New York and Cyprus – that should keep him busy.
So Good Luck in your retirement from all at The News and from everyone who knows you. Enjoy your ME time Mike!
The Cudeca shop on Avenida del Mar, Local 23 in Marbella was re-opened last Tuesday following its total refurbishment with the event attended by their finance director, volunteers and staff of the Cudeca Foundation and D. Manuel Cardeña, Social Welfare Councillor of the City of Marbella.

Last Saturday Mr Jeeves in Montemar hosted a fabulous Burger and Chips evening in aid of SOS the animal charity.
The evening was well supported by many locals as well as Mr Jeeves regular customers and a good crowd of holiday makers also joined forces for the charity. All the proceeds from the burgers and chips were donated to SOS and over €400 was raised on behalf of this very worthwhile cause.
SOS (Spay Our Strays) is an animal charity founded in 1997 located on the Costa del Sol that is funded entirely by donations and sponsorship. Every animal that comes through their gates receives the utmost care and affection and their pledge is never to euthanase any animal unless it is absolutely essential and then only on veterinary advice. They are fortunate in having sister organisations in Sweden and the UK that help rehouse some of their animals. On arriving at the refuge every dog and puppy costs SOS €200 in basic medical costs. This
covers neutering, vaccinations (including rabies) blood tests and microchipping. After that each animal costs €240 every six months in feeding costs, plus worming and flea treatment. SOS long-stay sponsor dogs cost €40 a month each. This does not include subsequent vets bills should they discover a medical condition that needs treatment.
The overall running costs for the refuge depend on the number of animals at any one time, but in the winter months, it costs around €550 a week for rent, food, cleaning materials, electricity and so on. This does not include veterinary bills. So you can see how important evenings like Mr Jeeves put on are to the charity.
Everyone had a brilliant evening at the Burger & Chips night and big thanks were given to Kat and her staff for an excellent evening. Birds on the Wing - Where Eagles Fly
In the British Isles there is only one type of breeding Eagle, here in Andalucia there are five. In order of size they are the Golden Eagle, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle and the Booted Eagle. It is very unlikely you will see a Golden Eagle, a Spanish Imperial Eagle or a Bonelli's Eagle here on the coast. Unfortunately these three fine birds prefer to inhabit the more remote inland areas of Andalucía. However, the Shorttoed Eagle and the Booted Eagle can be seen and are easily recognisable. Eagles tend to glide high in the sky on broad out-stretched wings which have fingerlike feathers at the end. As you will most likely be looking up and can only see the underside of a bird this is the part to concentrate on when spotting the difference. The smallest and most
common eagle in Andalucía is the Booted Eagle, with a wing span of 110 to 135 cm – similar in size to a large seagull. The underside of a Booted Eagle is mainly white and black – as seen in the photograph above – with the main diagnostic features being the underside of the wings.
The front of the wings are white and the rear part and the distinctive wingend finger feathers are black. The Short-toed Eagle, which is considerably larger than a Booted Eagle has a wing span of 160 to 180 cm and feeds on snakes. As can be seen in the photograph on the

The event, which has been running on the Costa del Sol since 2000, raises vital funds for the Rhys Daniels Trust that works with UK based specialist children’s hospitals. The Trust provides free, selfcontained accommodation for families of very sick children to use whilst their child is receiving lifesaving treatment many miles from their own home. A nice, light summery meal. A great a complement for any summer salads or as a side dish for a barbecues. This weeks recipe is shared with us by Kate Buchan who is the Sous chef at Kimbridge Restaurant, Near Romsey.
1. Line a baking tray with parchment paper to prevent the pastry sticking to the tray. Hold the asparagus in your hand and bend the end of it until it snaps off and place on a baking tray, repeat this until all the asparagus is trimmed. 2. Once on the tray drizzle with a little olive oil, sprinkle over the lemon zest and place in the oven for 10 minutes until the asparagus has softened. 3. Roll out the pastry and cut into rectangles of
12x6cm and place on the baking tray. Score a 1cm border on each rectangle. Sprinkle the parmesan over the middle of the rectangle and then put the asparagus in the middle of each one, five spears on each tartlet. Then crumble the feta carefully over the asparagus. 4. Brush the 1cm border with olive oil and place the tray into the oven and cook for 15 minutes until the pastry has puffed up and is golden brown. Serve warm with salad or as a side dish with a summer barbecue!

I remember being in Málaga many years ago and asking for una taza de té – a cup of tea.
A cup full of hot milk was brought to me with a tea bag – una bolsita de té on the side. Not the way one normally expects one’s tea to be served!
Since then bars and cafés are more used to serving tea with cold milk – con leche fría or té con limón – lemon tea and the variety of teas has improved too.
If you like herbal tea – una infusión, these are also readily available. There is a vast variety but the most common are una infusión de manzanilla – a camomile tea (I swear by them to help me sleep but perhaps it is all in the mind), una infusión de tila – lime blossom tea (also said to help one relax), menta poleo – mint tea (supposedly good for the digestion) and, of course, the increasingly popular té verde – green tea which many see as a cure-all. A tea pot is una tetera and a tea spoon is una cucharita (little spoon) And if you wish to tell someone that you wouldn't do something for all the tea in China there are two ways of getting your message across. Stem-cell trial offers hope for stroke patients
Five seriously disabled stroke patients taking part in a small clinical trial at Glasgow's Southern General Hospital to assess the safety of the procedure – which involves injecting stem cells into the damaged brain part – have shown small signs of recovery. It is one of the first trials in the world to test the use of stem cells in patients.
Results presented at the European Stroke Conference in London this week showed that there have been no adverse effects on the patients so far and there have been improvements to more than half participating in the trial. However, the

doctors in charge of the trial said that at this stage it is not possible to say whether the improvements are due to the close medical attention the patients are receiving. It is well documented that the feeling of wellbeing resulting from such attention, known as the placebo effect, can have a positive effect on people's health. But it is thought that stroke patients do not recover after the first six months of their stroke. All the patients involved in the trial had their strokes between six months and five years before they received the
treatment. The recovery of any one of them – let alone five – was not expected, the doctors said. Even if it is proved that the stemcell treatment really works it will be a long time before any treatment might be widely available.
The results so far pave the way for a so-called phase two trial later this year which will be desirable to determine whether any improvement is due to the treatment. If the phase two trial does show that the stem-cell treatment is the cause of the improvements, it could still take many years before it becomes widely
available. Larger phase three trials will be needed to assess who the treatment is most suitable for and at what stage it might be most effective.
A spokesman for the Stroke Association said: "The use of stem cells is a promising technique which could help to reverse some of the disabling effects of stroke. We are very excited about this trial; however, we are currently at the beginning of a very long road and significant further development is needed before stem cell therapy can be regarded as a possible treatment."
Old habits die hard Old habits really do die hard – whether they are good or bad – according to a study by researchers at the University of California, which contradicts the idea that being under pressure leads to bad habits like over-eating or shopping sprees. Instead, people are just as likely to maintain gym habits or eat healthily.
The researchers said stress does lead to relapses into bad behaviour – but that it can reinforce good habits too. They looked at the behaviour of 65
students over a 10-week term to study how much willpower someone had in a time of stress – in this case, during exams. They found that during testing periods, when students were stressed and sleepdeprived, they were even more likely to stick to old habits – as if they didn't have the energy to do something new.
So those who ate pastries or doughnuts for breakfast during the term ate even more junk food during exams. But the

same was true of the healthy "oatmeal eaters" – they too were likely to stick to their routine and habits. Those who read the editorial pages of the newspaper every day continued even when they were short of time. And regular gym-goers were even more likely to go to the gym even more when stressed.
The researchers said that when people try to change their behaviour, they should forget about motivation and self-control and concentrate on how to set up new habits because habits persist "even when we're tired and don't have the energy to exert selfcontrol". They added: "If you are somebody who doesn't have a lot of willpower, our study showed that habits are much more important." They added: "The central question for behaviourchange efforts should be, how can you form healthy, productive habits?
"What we know about habit formation is that you want to make the behaviour easy to perform, so that people repeat it often and it becomes part of their daily routine."

Luke Medland’s only problem with not having a left hand was...
Not being able to wear his wedding ring … and the manufacturers say they were delighted to help out with the problem
Luke Medland, 31, was born without a left hand and, after trying many prosthetic limbs he was always troubled that he couldn’t wear his wedding ring on the “correct” finger as it kept dropping off.
So he asked the manufacturers of the bionic prosthetic he was trialing for them if they could re-design the arm so that he and his wife Nancy, 28, could show the commitment they made to each other 6 years ago. Luke was fitted with a £10,000 carbon fibre mechanical hand seven months ago that moves like a human hand through responding to twitches he makes in muscles in his lower
arm which are detected by sensors that trigger one of 14 pre-programmed grips, mirroring human movements.
The experts at the makers, RSL Steeper, responded to his request by dismantling the parts and re-fitting the ring. They removed a portion of the gold and then moulded it to the same shape as the prosthetic finger, then tested it before strapping it back on to Luke this week. The hand, with aluminium and alloy knuckles, is so sensitive Luke can now hold a piece of paper and double click a mouse with it. He is one of just seven people in the world to be given the arm as part of a trial, which it is hoped will see the electronic arm made widely
available on the NHS.
The delighted father-of-two, from Wokingham, Berks. now has the ring permanently on his false finger – even when he takes off the attachment. He said: “It feels great to be wearing my wedding ring again – it's really special. It also takes away the slightly menacing look of the bionic hand. They did a great job of it. My hand is pretty cool – it is like something from Terminator. I'd tried a series of prosthethics before, but they were all quite cumbersome. Some children are scared of my hand, but most say 'wow' and think it is like something out of a film. My five-year-old son says it reminds him of Iron Man!”
Nick Ross in rape statement row A row is brewing over comments made by broadcaster Nick Ross, 65, (former Crimewatch presenter) in his new book and he has been forced to defend himself over controversial remarks suggesting "rape isn't always rape" claiming that half of all women who have penetrative sex unwillingly, do not think they were raped. In the book he says: "Half of all women who have had penetrative sex unwillingly do not think they were raped, and this proportion rises strongly when the assault involves a boyfriend, or if the woman is drunk or high on drugs: they went too far, it wasn't forcible, they didn't make themselves clear. For them,
rape isn't always rape and however upsetting, they feel is a long way removed from being systematically violated or snatched off the street.". In a statement, Ross, 65, insisted the book was "serious, carefully researched and evidencebased" and described rape as "one of the most defiling crimes", adding: "Far from attacking victims the chapter explores why so few victims report rape, why so few prosecutions take place, and whether criminal courts are the best way of helping to deal with the appalling suffering caused by sex attacks." In the extract from his book, “Crime”, Ross said it had become "sacrilege to suggest that there can be
any gradation: rape is rape. The real experts, the victims, know otherwise," he wrote. In his statement, Ross said: "For the record, lest it needs saying, and, as I make clear in the published extracts, anyone who suffers such a violating crime should be the centre of our concerns. As I write in the book, rape is one of the most defiling crimes and there is never excuse or justification for it."

In reply to the letter from Trevor Clarke in issue 227. A couple of very interesting points Trevor and I will do my best to try and clarify them. First the Out of Bounds issue. Rule 18-1 (ball at rest) states – if a ball at rest is moved by an outside agency, there is no penalty and the ball must be replaced. However rule 19-1 (ball in motion) says if a player’s ball in motion has been deliberately deflected or

British Astronauts You probably heard all the news last week about Britain’s first ‘official’ astronaut Timothy Peake, but he won’t be Britain’s first astronaut at all!

ritain currently does not have a policy for manned space flight; it does not contribute to the International Space Station (ISS) and does not even have the capability to launch a rocket into space.
I
t was the British author Arthur C. Clarke (2001: A Space Odyssey) who first suggested the idea of placing a series of artificial satellites in orbit around the Earth to transmit communication and TV signals across the globe.
I
n the late 1950’s Britain developed a few small-scale rockets. Christened Black Knight and Blue Streak, a couple of them were launched from the Isle of Wight and Woomera in southern Australia. Throughout the 1960’s various projects were half-heartedly tested and then cancelled due to funding. By 1972 the British space programme was cancelled altogether. Britain continued to build satellites but they were all to be launched into space via NASA. It seemed that the British governments were unwilling to spend any money on space research.

n 1988 a consortium of private British companies was formed to send a British citizen into space on board a Russian Soyuz rocket and spend time on the Russian MIR space station. Helen Sharman was a research chemist at Mars (!) confectionary experimenting on various flavours of chocolate when she heard a radio advertisement ‘Astronauts required; no experience necessary’. Along with 13,000 others she applied to become Britain’s first astronaut.

elen was selected on 25th November 1989 for project Juno and spent an intense 18-month training period at Star City near Moscow before being launched into space on 18th May 1991 aged 27. She spent eight days on board MIR carrying out various experiments before returning to Earth.
W
hile she may have been a successful astronaut Helen had a small slip up when she was selected to carry the torch and light the flame at the 1991 Summer Games held in Sheffield. On live international television, she tripped while running through the stadium sending the burning embers onto the track. Encouraged to continue her run, without any flame from the torch, she proceeded round the track and climbed to the ceremonial flame. Despite the lack of any fire from the torch the ceremonial flame still ignited. She was awarded an OBE in 1983. I spent a weekend with Helen in 1995 (pictured above) but chose not to ask her if she had a light!
M
ichael Foale was born in Lincolnshire in 1957 of British/American parents and attended Queens College Cambridge University along with Stephen Fry. He applied and was rejected twice to become and astronaut before finally being accepted by NASA in 1987 to become a space shuttle pilot. He flew into space on five different space shuttle missions and now lives with his wife and two children in Houston Texas.

iers Sellers is another Britishborn astronaut. He was born in Sussex in 1955 and was educated at both Edinburgh and Leeds Universities before moving to the USA with his wife in 1982 to take up a career with NASA. He took on US citizenship in 1991 and was eventually recruited as an astronaut in 1996. Piers went on to fly on three separate space shuttle missions to the ISS. He even carried a piece of wood supposedly from Isaac Newton’s apple tree. He was awarded the OBE in 2011 for services to science.

ual citizenship or at least being born in the UK to American parents seems to be the requisite. Nicholas Patrick was born in North Yorkshire in 1964 but became a US citizen in 1994. He flew on two space shuttle missions to the ISS.

veteran of two space shuttle missions, Gregory Johnson was also born in the UK in South Ruislip, Middlesex to American parents. He was a fighter pilot in the USAAF and flew 34 combat missions during operation desert storm before joining NASA in 2000. So when Major Timothy Peake flies to the ISS in 2015 he will be following a long line of British citizens into space. I can’t wait to hear NASA contact him by radio and say ‘This is Ground Control to Major Tim!’ Oh and by the way, it was also another Brit who wrote that song. The ISS will fly across southern Spain next Monday 4th June. Look to the southwest at 22.55 and you will see it as it passes overhead heading toward the northwest.

Rosberg makes it a family double winning in Monaco Nico Rosberg claimed victory in the Monaco Grand Prix 30 years to the day after father Keke did likewise, but had to endure two safety cars and a red flag before returning Mercedes to the top of the podium.
The German also shrugged off pre-race controversy to lead from start to finish, managing his rubber as well as anyone when he needed to, and always seemingly able to open a gap over his pursuers. Teams Red Bull and Ferrari had lodged complaints about a threeday tyre test Mercedes conducted on behalf of Pirelli immediately after Barcelona.
Both Mercedes and Pirelli spent race day in Monaco claiming that the three-day session, conducted in Barcelona immediately after the Spanish Grand Prix, was above board, despite Red Bull's Christian Horner deeming it 'underhand' amid accusations that both parties had conspired to keep it a secret. The victory made the Rosbergs the first fatherson combination to triumph on the streets of the Principality, and allowed Nico to go one better than the second place he took behind Mark Webber a year ago.
The race began with a grid re-shuffled by accidents on Saturday morning, leaving Felipe Massa at the back and Romain Grosjean further down than his Friday pace would have suggested, while rain on Saturday afternoon helped catch out Paul di Resta, leaving the Scot adrift of the top ten spot he might have expected.
Fortunately, despite the unusual order, the entire field managed to navigate its way through St Devote without incident, although Sebastian Vettel raised heart rates at Mercedes by attempting to force his way between the front row pair of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. The Briton held firm around
the outside, however, and the front of the pack continued in grid order. Ferrari has revealed that a
technical issue was the cause of Felipe Massa's accident in the Monaco Grand Prix, with the Brazilian being absolved of any blame by his team. Massa crashed out on lap 28 in an incident that seemed to be a carbon copy of his
accident in final practice on Saturday, with his car hitting the barriers on the outside of St Devote before going straight on into the tyre wall.
Sergio Perez meanwhile had an interesting race once again, with Lotus's Kimi Raikkonen saying Perez should be
"punched in the face" to teach him a lesson after an incident involving both
drivers. McLaren driver Perez made a series of aggressive overtaking moves, in one of which he collided with Raikkonen. Asked if the drivers would talk to Perez, Raikkonen

Isle of Man TT claims another life as Japan’s Yoshinari Matsushita is killed Japanese rider Yoshinari Matsushita has died in an accident at the Isle of Man TT qualifying session. The 43-year-old Tyco Suzuki rider, who first competed in the iconic Manx event in 2009, was only entered into the race earlier in the day. Matsushita is the 21st rider to die at the races since 2000. "Yoshi was a really popular competitor who had a large number of friends in the TT Races paddock," clerk of the course Gary Thompson said. "He was a genuine and friendly character who always had time for everyone. He will be sorely missed."
The coroners have been informed and an investigation into the circumstances of the accident is under way.
Matsushita's TT entry for the Northern Ireland-based Tyco Suzuki team was only announced earlier on Monday when it was revealed that he would be teaming up with Guy Martin and Josh Brookes in the Supersport 600 event.

Las Brisas Golf raise Málaga win, Pellegrini set for exit over 18.000€ for Malaga 3 - 1 Deportivo La Coruña Cudeca Hospice! The Royal Golf Club Las Brisas, located in Nueva Andalucia, held their annual charity Golf Tournament on Sunday 1st May in aid of Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice. The competition began at 09.30am and the golfers played 18 holes before sitting down to a superb luncheon organised at the club restaurant. The holes were kindly sponsored and the players were encouraged to donate generously; all of them participated in the great auction and bought tickets for the grand tombola.
The event proved to be a huge success and together with the funds raised during the course of the year, a grand total
of 18.000€ was raised for the Hospice, which will help Cudeca to continue offering their Special Kind of Caring to patients suffering from advanced cancer and support to their families, as all the support provided by Cudeca is completely free of charge.

Málaga faced Deportivo in the last home game of the season, knowing that a win would secure them a Europa League spot pending the UEFA appeal. They also went into the game knowing that it would be manager Manuel Pellegrini´s last game in charge at La Roselada, following his confirmation in the week that he would be leaving the Club at the end of the season. He has also confirmed that Manchester City is among a number of very good options as he considers his managerial future with added interest from Roma and PSG.
Deportivo on the other hand are at the wrong end of the table and desperately needed the points. The first half was a mix of half chances for both sides with Deportivo looking strong going forward but unable to break through the defensive partnership of Weligton and Demichelis. Baptista and
Joaquin both had good chances which they failed to convert. Right on the stroke of half time though the deadlock was broken and it was the home fans who breathed a sigh of relief when Saviola got on the end of a Joaquin cross to make it one nil.
Early on in the second half Riki had a great chance to equalise after a one on one with Caballero but he fired the ball wide of the post. Málaga soon went two up when on 64 minutes Baptista played a one two with Saviola and using his strength got past Aythami Artiles and poked the ball home. Málaga were pegged back with 15 minutes remaining when Salomao volleyed the ball into the ground which then bounced over the Málaga defenders and into the back of the net. Five minutes later though, Málaga´s twogoal cushion was reinstated

when Isco slammed his shot off the crossbar into the net. That is likely to be Isco´s last goal in a shirt with Málaga speculation that he will venture north to Real Madrid in the summer.

Martinez resigns as Wigan manager
The Spaniard led the club to an historic FA Cup triumph this season but could not prevent relegation from the Premier League. The decision has been announced after 39-year-old Martinez held talks with Wigan chairman Dave Whelan in the past week. Martinez, who joined Wigan in June 2009, is one of the leading contenders to take over at Everton. "He wanted permission to move on so I've given that," said Whelan.

Rafael Benitez: Napoli appoint Spaniard as manager Napoli have appointed Rafael Benitez as their new manager on a two-year deal.
