SNP launches its referendum blueprint

Journalists from the US, Europe, China, the Middle East, Japan, Australia and Russia were at the launching of the SNP's independence blueprint by Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond at the Glasgow Science Centre on Tuesday, to hear him claim that a separate Scotland could have the eighth largest economic output and the 10th highest national income per head in the “whole of the developed world”. The 670-page Scottish government white paper promised a "revolution" in social policy, and also pledged to tailor economic

policy to Scottish businesses and industry.

On September 18th, Scots voters will be asked the yes/no question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?" At the launch of the paper – "Scotland's future: Your guide to an independent Scotland" – Salmond said that it was "the most comprehensive blueprint for an independent country ever published, not just for Scotland but for any prospective independent nation". "But more than that," he said, "it is a mission statement and a

prospectus for the kind of country we should be and which this government believes we can be. Our vision is of an independent Scotland regaining its place as an equal member of the family of nations – however, we do not seek independence as an end in itself, but rather as a means to changing Scotland for the better." In addition to making the case for Scottish independence, the white paper sets out policy pledges which the SNP said it would pursue if it were elected as the government of an independent Scotland.

Decluttered I have always been a bit of a squirrel - well, actually a rather large one! I will keep things for years that “might come in handy one day” and, it has to be said that a lot of them do, eventually, get used but that could well mean a good ten years in storage first. Last weekend, when we could no longer find room to build any more bookshelves (the house and flat are covered in them and we’ve probably got as many books as a small library – certainly more than the mobile library we used when we were kids). I also have a huge bookcase full of cookery books any there’s no way I’m getting rid of them. On Saturday we went around finding boxes to put them in and on Sunday started the long haul to being able to see some walls again. In our hallway alone, I filled up 10 boxes (and they weren’t small boxes at that) so next weekend it’ll be the rest of the books throughout the house. Then there’ll be all the bits and pieces that we’ve gathered over our 30 years together - how can I throw those mementos out?! And as for glasses... remember the old ones that were given to you in the UK when you bought petrol? They were quite horrible but I have two cupboards full of them in my garage. They have to go! In a couple of weeks I’ll have to start on the wardrobes. Some of my stuff must be in the vintage range by now so maybe I’ll have a look at selling some of the really good pieces on ebay. I hate having to do this but, after seeing a programme on the TV about hoarders, yep, I recognised myself! Jackson has reached the grand old age of 6 months now and it was off to the vets with him last Friday to have “the op” carried out. When I picked him up he just looked at me as if to say: “Woman, what have you done?!” Did I feel guilty, well, ok, just a wee bit.

Immigrant children SNP launches disappear without referendum blueprint trace Continued from FRONT PAGE

DNA samples taken from people at the temporary immigrant holding centre (CETI) in Melilla have led social workers to conclude that illegal migration into Spain is sometimes human trafficking, after it was found that the DNA samples from immigrants who had arrived with children showed there was no genetic link between the adults and the youngsters.

Carlos Montero, the director of the Melilla CETI, which currently holds almost 1,000 people – double its capacity – told El Pais newspaper that the behaviour of the supposed parents who were taking no notice of their children first made social workers suspicious. The Red Cross also reported similar situations in its refuges in Andalusia: "There were women who did not know when they stopped breastfeeding, when their child's first tooth came out, and who were even disgusted by changing nappies," Milagros Núñez, manager of the organisation's immigrant care programme, told El Pais.

Montero said some of the false parents had admitted they were not related to the children, saying they had found them, abandoned, on the way to Melilla. He believes the children could be stolen, kidnapped, or "rented". Almost five years have elapsed since aid workers first became suspicious in 2008 and it is only now that the authorities have decided to

act. Since March this year, children entering Spain unaccompanied or with adults who cannot prove their parenthood have been registered by the authorities, photographed and fingerprinted. Ombudsman Soledad Becerril said: "Now, after we have registered them, we are able to prevent them from disappearing as has regrettably happened on many occasions previously." The last authority to react to the situation was Andalusia's regional ombudsman, Jesús Maeztu. After meeting with NGOs, regional government representatives and state security agencies, a coordinated protocol to combat the trafficking and exploitation of immigrant minors has been put in place and will be passed to the regional parliament in December. "We are talking here about paedophilia and even organ trafficking," Maeztu said.

Police operations across Spain this year have uncovered cases where Nigerian children have been held by mafias until their mothers have paid the ring anything up to €40,000 to be brought to Europe. To meet the debt, they have to prostitute themselves for years. In April, the police arrested a Nigerian madame who had several children under her control. She was charged with killing a nine-month-old baby whose mother was a prostitute in Barcelona and was sentenced to 18 years in jail.

The former Labour Chancellor Alistair Darling, who leads the Better Together campaign, said Scots were being asked to “take a one-way ticket to a deeply uncertain destination”.

Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael pointed out that both the Chancellor George Osborne and the Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls have made clear that they are not in favour of an "unworkable" sterling zone.

Current opinion polls show that support for a Yes vote is consistent at between 30 and 35 per cent.

Within minutes of its publication, the pro-Union parties criticised it for failing to propose a Plan B on currency, in view of repeated warnings that the UK government will not back the use of the pound in an independent Scotland, despite the paper's claim that "the pound is Scotland's just as much as it is the rest of the UK's".

The document was published on the same day that a Treasury analysis warned Scots they would face £1,000 tax rises if they voted for independence because of the country's more rapidly ageing population and declining oil revenues. The paper sets the date for independence – March 24th, 2016 – in the event of Yes vote on September 18th next year, allowing just 18 months to negotiate currency arrangements as well as membership of the EU and Nato.

Right to protest to be curbed Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz (pictured right) presented a draft of his proposed Protection of Public Safety law to last week's Cabinet meeting which, if accepted, will replace the 1992 law currently in force.

The new law sets out punishments for a range of public order offences, such as participation in the socalled "escraches" – the practice of protesting outside politicians' homes, demonstrating outside Parliament without official authorisation, burning trash containers, insulting police officers and picking up prostitutes in public places near schools, among others. Gathering outside Parliament without permission will be considered a serious offence and carry a fine of

between €30,000 €600,000.

and

Many of the new law's 55 articles are aimed at greater control over street protests and will allow the police to establish “security zones” to prevent gatherings. Vehicles blocking the roads (such as tractors, taxis or trucks) during demonstrations will be impounded if protestors refuse to move them. Gatherings without authorisation will also be prohibited outside regional parliaments. People wearing hoods, motorcycle helmets or other items to hide their identity during disturbances will also be fined, as will those who insult and threaten police officers during protests. Other

offences include soliciting, negotiating, offering and accepting sexual services in the vicinity of schools, parks or in areas where road safety could be compromised, damaging the urban infrastructure, putting up barricades, climbing public buildings without permission, mistreating animals in public performances, distracting pilots or train and bus drivers with laser pointers. Minor infractions will carry fines of between €100 and €1,000; serious

offences between €1,001 and €30,000, and very serious offences from €30,001 to €600,000. The opposition parties in general described the proposed law as “a brutal assault on civil rights,” but

The bleak side of Christmas lottery spending independence

The governor of the Bank of Spain, Luis María Linde, on Monday joined the long queue of people bearing bad news for the Catalans if they decide to separate from Spain. He said banks such as CaixaBank, Banco Sabadell and Catalunya Banc, which are based in Catalonia, would face serious problems and could go under.

Linde told the annual meeting of the Spanish branch of the Financial Markets Association in Madrid: “According to European regulations, if a small territory were to separate from a large territory, the banks headquartered in the small territory would no longer be able to fund themselves through the European Central Bank."

He said the same rule applied, for example, to a Japanese bank which, even if it also had

“The ECB only lends against a guarantee issued by a borrower that is a member of the European economic area.” He said the new country would have to have its own currency and a banking

supervisor, and would have assets in that currency but liabilities in euros. “It would be a very bad scenario, both the large territory and the small territory would suffer a great deal,” he said.

Catalonia's ruling CiU nationalist bloc and the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) are campaigning for the right to hold a vote to decide on the region’s future. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has threatened to invoke the Constitution to prevent such a vote going ahead.

Thus, people in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, spend on average €30, those in Badajoz, Extremadura, and Seville, fork out a little more – €38) and €37 respectively.

El Gordo was introduced in 1892 to raise taxes but somewhere along the way became tax-free. However, in these austere times, the government has introduced a tax of 20 per cent on all winnings of more than €2,500. The draw will be televised live on December 22nd, when most Spaniards drop everything to watch, hoping against hope that they'll win "the Fat One".

King leaves hospital King Juan Carlos left Quirón hospital in Madrid on Monday, five days after undergoing his fifth hip operation. When reporters asked the King how he felt as the car taking him home drove past them, he grinned and said "muy mal, muy mal (very bad)".

Last week, the King

received a permanent artificial hip in his left side to replace a temporary implant that had been inserted six weeks ago to replace a first hip replacement that had become infected. Hospital spokesman Lucía Alonso said the infection had cleared up

and that the King had “very satisfactorily” completed post-operational treatment since last Thursday’s surgery, recovering sufficient mobility for day-to-day activities. The King should be able to resume official duties in the New Year, but will have to use crutches until the spring.

on monday, November 18th, the first day that two of the country's biggest cinema chains decided to start offering discount tickets, audience numbers increased by 59 per cent, and box office takings went up 22 per cent compared with the same day the previous week. The latter figure is for the takings in all of the country’s movie houses, as the two chains – Yelmo Cineplex and Cinesa – have not made their data public. Together, they own around 950 screens, about 35 per cent of the country’s total. Now, on mondays, Tuesdays and wednesdays, tickets will cost €3.50 instead of the usual €8 or €9, is an attempt to recapture the success of last month’s Fiesta del Cine event. during that three-day event, which ran from october 21st to 23rd, 1.5 million tickets were sold at the reduced price of €2.90 via the event’s website – seven times more than the number sold the same three days the previous week.

The Castellón provincial court absolved him of two other charges of influence peddling and bribery. Fabra’s ex-wife was also sentenced to two years in prison on two other tax fraud charges. Fabra was also ordered to pay a fine of €693,000 and credit the same amount to the tax office. His ex-wife will have to pay a €274,000 fine and

Fabra said he was happy with the ruling because it did not find him guilty of bribery or

a madrid court has ordered German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal to pay compensation to a group of Spanish plaintiffs who suffered deformation due to its “negligent behaviour” in approving Thalidomide, which was available in Spain until 1961. The court ruling limits compensation payments to those people recognised by the government in a 2010 royal decree as victims of the drug and compensated by the Spanish state. However, it left the door open for others to make claims if they can prove they have disabilities caused by Thalidomide, but excludes people who received money from the Contergan Foundation, established in Germany in 1971 to compensate Thalidomide victims and into which Grünenthal paid 117 million deutschmarks. World News Sanctions 'could be lifted in December'

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Monday that some EU sanctions on Iran could be lifted as early as next month, as part of a nuclear deal with world powers.

Mr Fabius told French radio that "Iran is committed to giving up the prospect of nuclear weapons. It's perfectly clear." However, he insisted that the temporary deal could be reversed if its terms were not adhered to, saying: "As long as some things remained to be settled, nothing is settled." European Union foreign ministers would meet "in a

few weeks" to put forward a proposal partially to lift some sanctions on Iran, which the 28-member bloc would then have to approve. The limited lifting of sanctions would take place "in December", he added.

France, the UK and Germany, the US, Russia and China took part in the talks with Iran, hosted by EU foreign policy chief

Catherine Ashton. Under the deal which will last six months, Iran would receive some £4.3 billion in "limited, temporary, targeted, and reversible [sanctions] relief" while a permanent agreement is sought. In return, Tehran has agreed to a series of measures surrounding its nuclear programme. The six-month interim

deal in Geneva prompted a fall in oil prices on markets on Monday. Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has warned the agreement is a "historic mistake", adding that Israel would not be bound by the agreement: "We cannot and will not allow a regime that calls for the destruction of Israel to obtain the means to achieve this goal."

Australian family set record The Richards family, in Canberra, have put up 502,165 Christmas lights around their home, setting a new world record, confirmed by Guinness World Records.

David Richards told reporters he had started working on the display in October. The family first

held the world record in 2011, before losing the title to a family in New York.

The Richards family had put up 331,038 Christmas lights in 2011. The family plan to open the display to visitors in the coming weeks, to raise money for a children's charity.

Newtown gunman 'obsessed' with Columbine

The gunman who killed 26 people at a Connecticut school and his own mother last year had "an obsession" with the 1999 Columbine massacre, an official report released Monday has found. Police said there was evidence adam Lanza, 20, had planned the shooting, which took fewer than 11 minutes, but they could not establish why he opened fire at Sandy Hook elementary School in Newtown on December 14th 2012, before turning the gun on himself. The report said of Lanza: "He had a familiarity with and access to firearms and ammunition and an obsession with mass murders, in particular the april 1999 shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado." It also said: "The obvious question that remains is: 'Why did the shooter murder twenty-seven people, including twenty children?' unfortunately, that question may never be answered conclusively."

UN helps eloped Saudi 'Juliet'

a Saudi woman who eloped to Yemen to be with her Yemeni lover has been given uN protection while she seeks asylum. uNHCR officials said Huda's application was likely to be approved on the grounds that she could face mistreatment, even death, at the hands of her family if returned home. In Yemen, it is being celebrated as a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story. Huda crossed the border several weeks ago, followed by her boyfriend, arafat, who was working in Saudi arabia. Huda – who is in her early 20s – says she decided they had to elope after arafat's marriage proposal was rejected by her family. The two have been held in an immigration detention centre since their arrival. Huda is charged with illegally crossing the border. The same charge against arafat was dropped, but he refused to be freed, wanting to remain with her in prison. The two get to meet once a week when Huda's asylum case is heard in court.

Opposition leader tells supporters to vote

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles told thousands of supporters at a rally in Caracas on Saturday not to feel intimidated and to vote in upcoming local elections, warning them that not voting on December 8th could be "very costly". Local elections take place in two weeks. Capriles said two of his aides were detained without explanation on Thursday night. He accused the president of being too cowardly to arrest him, relying instead on detaining people around him. "Why don't they come for me? Maduro, don't be a coward, come on," the defiant opposition leader told supporters. One of those arrested was man in charge of organising Caprile's travel agenda, alejandro Silva. The government confirmed two members of the opposition had been arrested, accused of planning to provoke disturbances during Saturday's protests. The opposition disputes Mr Maduro's victory in april's elections.

DiCaprio donates $3m to save tigers

Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio has donated $3 million (£1.85 million) to help save tigers in Nepal. The Great Gatsby star made the donation to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) via his charitable foundation. The funds will be used to significantly increase the number of tigers in Nepal by 2022 – the next Year of the Tiger. In a statement, the 39-year-old actor said he's "hopeful" the money will help "exceed the goal" of doubling Nepal's tiger population. Nepal's tigers are classified as endangered and – as with the general tiger population – are under threat from "habitat destruction and escalating illegal poaching". DiCaprio's donation will help enforce anti-poaching patrols and protect and restore areas for the tigers to breed in Nepal. So far, the foundation has helped increase the tiger population in Nepal's Terai Bardia National Park from 18 to 50.

Geneva talks 'best chance' for Syria Syrian peace talks planned for early next year are the "best opportunity" to form a transitional government, US Secretary of State John Kerry said shortly after UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon announced on Monday that Syria's government and opposition would meet on January 22nd in Geneva.

Mr Ban said he expected representatives of both sides to come "with a clear understanding" that the goal of the talks was the full implementation of the Geneva Communique, issued after a meeting of the UN-backed Action Group for Syria in the Swiss city in June 2012. It calls for an immediate cessation of violence and the formation "on the basis of mutual consent" of a transitional government with full executive powers, including power over military and security forces, that could include officials

serving under President Bashar al-Assad and members of the opposition.

Mr Ban also warned all parties that they should also come to Geneva "with a serious intention to end a war that has already left well over 100,000 dead, driven almost nine million from their homes, left countless missing and detained". He told them that "The conflict in Syria has raged for too long. It would be

President Bashar al-Assad

unforgivable not to seize this opportunity to bring an end to the suffering and destruction it has caused."

The UN, US and Russia have been trying for months to get both sides to agree a political solution to the conflict but there have been disputes over who should attend the talks. More than 100,000 people have been killed and millions have fled Syria since the unrest against Assad began in 2011, according to UN estimates.

Protesters block Nato supply route Pakistani activists have blocked the main supply route for provisions destined for Nato troops in Afghanistan to protest against US drone strikes.

Opposition politician Imran Khan called for the action and said it would continue until American drone attacks in northwest Pakistan came to an end. He blames the drones for causing civilian deaths

and for crushing any chance of peace with the Taliban.

The protesters have taken the law into their own hands, deciding who can pass and go on to Afghanistan, and who can't. They have been harassing truck drivers and turning back vehicles carrying Nato provisions. Pakistan is committed to allowing supplies through,

but as yet has done nothing to stop the vigilante action, which is causing such huge disruption. There are two crossings in Pakistan used to take Nato troop supplies to and from Afghanistan – the other crossing in southwest Balochistan province has not been affected by a blockade.

Swiss vote no to capping bosses' pay Swiss voters have rejected a proposal that would have limited executive pay to 12 times that of the lowest paid – with 65.3 per cent voting against the plan and 34.7 per cent in favour. There has been widespread public anger at revelations that some of Switzerland's chief executives are

earning more than 200 times what their employees take home.

In many cases these high levels of pay are being given to executives whose firms have been cutting jobs. The country is home to a range of giant businesses, including pharmaceutical companies

Nuclear agreement Typhoon death toll over 5,000 with Iran is good news, says Hague British Foreign Secretary William Hague says the new nuclear agreement between the West and Iran is good news for the whole world.

He has been deeply involved in the five days of talks in Geneva which have led to the restrictions

on Iran’s nuclear programme. The US, France, Germany, Russia and China have also been involved in the negotiations which will halt Iran’s ability to make a nuclear bomb. Mr Hague said: “This shows it is possible to work

with Iran and through diplomacy address intractable problems.”

The deal is for six months to allow a permanent deal to be worked out and there will be limited relief from sanctions for Iran.

The true extent of the typhoon disaster in the Philippines has become apparent with the news that the death toll has risen to over 5,000 – and it is still rising.

Six new British aid flights will arrive in the Philippines this week. Development Secretary Justine Greening said the humanitarian efforts of

the UK’s armed forces and the Department for International Development were making a difference.

She has visited some of the worst hit areas and says that in the coming months the UK will be working to improve the ability of four main cities to withstand future extreme weather events.

A glimpse into the Small shops good for you future of banking A glimpse into the longterm future of banking in Britain has been provided by Ross McEwan, the new chief executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

And it is a future that will see a greater reliance on machines and telephones and a move away from branch banking.

The use of mobile apps and self service centres will increasingly meet the needs of customers, he said during a business conference at the

Scottish Parliament.

While more customers are using mobile apps, and the number is expected to reach three million by the end of the year, branch transactions are down 30 per cent. Mr McEwan told the gathering that he was “not nostalgic” about banking. He was positive about the economic outlook and believed there was a need to embrace new technologies.

Immigrants expected to flood into UK in 2014

When restrictions are lifted in the New Year it has been suggested that 8,000 immigrants from Bulgaria could arrive in the UK every year and campaign group MigrationWatch UK say that they estimate 50,000 Bulgarians and Romanians every year could seek to settle in Britain putting a strain on housing and the jobs market. A representative from the Bulgarian government said: “While in the Europe Union you cannot stop the free movement of people and their legal access to the UK labour market." He added that far from encouraging their citizens to seek work abroad, his country is suffering from a “brain drain” of highly skilled workers such as doctors and scientists, financiers and entrepreneurs.

Ian Watkins charged with attempted rape

Rocker Ian Watkins, 36, who is the former lead singer of Lostprofits, dramatically changed his pleas from not guilty to guilty ahead of his trial in Cardiff Crown Court where he is being charged with a string of sex offences including two charges of attempting to rape a one-yearold baby during a drug fuelled binge. Watkins also admitted possessing and making child porn as well as launching the plot to rape a baby. However, he added that he has no memory of video evidence that could have been shown at the trial that shows him abusing the baby plus webcam footage of him encouraging a groupie to abuse her own child. He said that actual sex with the child had not taken place but admitted abuse. Prosecutor Christopher Clee QC told the judge that both of the attempted rape admissions were accepted adding: "From the footage, there is an argument as to whether the full offence is made out. If it is made out, it is minimal. There is so little difference between the full attempt and the attempt as to make no difference. We are prepared to accept the pleas as tendered."

Britain’s railways are ‘almost full’

Over the Christmas period many people in Britain will be using the railways to travel and it is, perhaps, an appropriate time to look at this traditional form of travel.

While Britain is no longer a world leader, the railways have become much more popular in recent years. Increased use has coincided with rising fuel prices and congested roads – factors which have made car travel less attractive. In a recent profits statement, Network Rail, which provides the network’s infrastructure, said train performance was high by historic standards, and this has to be set against the fact that the network is overloaded.

There is now record investment in the railways, some £15 million a day. There are a million more trains and half a billion more passengers than there were ten years ago and the railways are all but full. The finance director of Network Rail is Patrick Butcher. He said: “The railways continue to experience tremendous growth and we are responding to that demand with the biggest sustained investment since Victorian times.” So there you have it. Hopefully everyone will be able to find a seat and there will be room in the roof racks for their Christmas presents. written by Vic Gardner

Local News 'Robin Hood' mayor faces jail sentence The Andalusia Regional High Court has sentenced Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo, the so-called “Robin Hood” mayor of Marinaleda (pictured right), to seven months in jail and also fined him for squatting on an estate in Seville which belongs to the Defence Ministry. Sánchez Gordillo made the headlines last summer for organising robberies in supermarkets to provide food for families in need, orchestrating them from outside the establishments with a

megaphone. Sánchez Gordillo and a number of day labourers belonging to the Andalusian Union of Workers (SAT) occupied the disused military land in August of last year.

The court handed the same sentence down to SAT spokesman Diego Cañamero. Both men were charged with trespass and civil disobedience but were cleared of causing damage.

However, they were each ordered to pay the

UGT charged Junta counterfeit briefcases Defence Ministry €760 compensation. Three other SAT members were found guilty of trespass but the remaining 54 defendants were acquitted. Only three of the accused attended last week's hearing, while the rest, led by Sánchez Gordillo and Cañamero, staged a protest outside the courthouse against the "repression" the SAT has suffered. Sánchez Gordillo has refused to resign as mayor but Cañamero has since resigned from the union.

The General Workers Union (UGT) distributed 700 leather briefcases identical to a similar model made by Salvador Bachiller, a well-known brand, and 1,000 Francis Montesinos ballpoint pens to the delegates who attended its IX Congress held in September 2009 in Seville.

However, the gifts were not as generous as it first seemed – they were both counterfeit, made in Asia to order for the UGT. In fact the UGT was not being generous at all – because it charged the briefcases and the pens to the Junta de Andalucia for the sum of €100,238, hiding the amount in five invoices charged to different

subsidies that the Junta received from the EU.

The invoices bore the logo of the alleged suppliers, Salvador Bachiller and Francis Montesinos, and were presumably false, seeing as how the articles were made by counterfeiters somewhere in Asia. The

UGT has been in hot water for months, as more and more of its dubious activities come to light – with nearly all of them paid for by the Junta. UGT general secretary Cándido Mendez is braving it out for the time being, as calls for his resignation continue to multiply.

Fuengirola to Ski station opens earlier allow dogs on Around 1,000 skiers and snowboarders trooped up to the Sierra Nevada ski station last Saturday for the start of the 2013/2014 season, one week earlier than usual.

Not all the slopes were apt for use but four were, thanks to the recent cold snap which has brought early snows with it. A

spokesman for Cetursa, the company that manages the station, said the continuing cold snap will bring more snow and that all the slopes should be apt for use by next week. "Everybody enjoyed the opening – the snow was fresh, and it was very sunny, ideal weather for skiing," he said.

The Town Hall on Monday approved two proposals – one that will allow dogs to travel with their owners on urban buses and the second for the creation of a specific area on the beach where dogs can be exercised. Both were approved unanimously. Fuengirola will now become the third town in Andalusia to allow dogs on buses. Councillor Carmen Díaz said that at present only guide dogs are allowed to travel with their owners but this would be extended to all canine pets, with the exception of the potentially dangerous breeds and dogs weighing more than 25 kilos. She said the buses will have special areas for the dogs plus a supply of cleaning materials.

Mayor gives up all for love

Socialist mayor josé maría Ruiz Lizana told a local paper he was amazed at the local media's reaction to his announcement that he was giving up his job to go and live in Panama with his fiancée. He has been the mayor of alfarnate – known locally as Los Pirineos (Pyrenees) because it is 925 metres above sea level – since 2007 and his plan came as no surprise to its 1,300 residents because he'd announced it some months ago. He said he and Doris Solis had oneway tickets "but we'll probably come back with the children we hope to have in a few years time if things improve here".

Delinquents give themselves away and the owners should have their "passports" available for inspection if required. The dog will also have to buy a 50 cent ticket and will not be allowed to sit on a seat.

Two Romanians who were passing themselves off as deaf mutes to ask for money for an association of disabled people and Unicef gave themselves away when two men they thought were good for some cash turned out to be plainclothes Local policemen. The two cops were checking them out after receiving complaints from local shops and individuals that the two Romanians didn't seem to be kosher. One of them was using sign language to explain where the money they were collecting was going when one of the policeman flashed his badge. The man then swore in Spanish and gave the game away.

The municipality with most horses

The town hall's agriculture and livestock department has begun the first census of horses, donkeys and mules to find out exactly how many of them live there and if it is the andalusian municipality with the most equines. according to junta de andalucia figures, there should be around 3,000 of our hoofed friends and Councillor josé antonio Sánchez Peña said the aim was to check out that number in order to protect what he called the town's "horse culture", and its ranking in the equine scheme of things.

Hype and moral diseases

E

verybody's raving about Junta de Andalucia premier Susana Diaz and if you take all the hype seriously, she's going to save the Socialist Party from itself and get it back into power at the next election so that it can save Spain from Rajoy's Fascist hordes.

S

he had the temerity when she met Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to ask him to ease the tension at the border with Gibraltar because some 7,000 workers from La Linea cross it daily and the long queues are making life very difficult for them. I imagine Rajoy was polite and said he'd see what he could do, but the Partido Popular has always taken a hard line on the Gibraltar issue and I doubt if they're going to change course now.

D

iaz has also stood up for the unity of Spain, which puts her at odds with the Party's proposals for a federated Spain along the lines of Germany or the US, and with the Socialists' Catalan branch's flirtation with the independence movement there. However, the Catalan Socialists seem to have realised that this flirtation won't win them any votes at the next regional election and have pulled back from that brink – for now anyway. I'm not quite sure what the Socialists mean by "a federated Spain" – surely the regions can't get any more independent of Madrid than they already are?

D

iaz strikes me as being very much of a middle-of-theroader and it will be interesting to see how she handles the relationship with the Communist-dominated United Left, without whom the Socialist Party can't stay in power. Socialists and Communists share many basic ideas but they make uneasy bedfellows because one is democratic and the other is totalitarian. As a result, the two parties usually end up parting ways. But whether they do or not, the situation here in Andalusia won't change until the generation who suffered the Franco dictatorship – and always votes for the Left – dies off. So we still have a way to go.

B

ut let's get back to Rajoy's Fascist hordes. That archFascist (as the Left always calls her), former Madrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre wrote an article entitled "A moral disease" for the ABC newspaper earlier this week in which she states: "That moral

disease has a lot to do with the skill that those responsible for left-wing agit-prop (agitation propaganda) have when it comes to planting the idea of the Left's moral superiority in Western societies."

S

he then goes on to compare two recent cases of political violence – one on the Right and one on the Left. On the morning of September 11th, Catalonia's national day or Diada, 15 neo-Nazis attacked a bookstore that the Catalan regional government has in Madrid, knocking over bookcases and spraying everyone who had gathered there to commemorate the Diada with what seems to have been Mace. That same afternoon, government and opposition MPs were condemning the attack in Parliament and the media and 12 of the attackers were arrested the following day. The police eventually caught up with the other three in mid-October and all are awaiting trial. The authorities, the police and the media did what they had to do.

O

n November 20th, around 150 extreme left-wingers attacked the Faculty of Law at Madrid's Complutense University, beating up a few people – five ended up in hospital – and smashing furniture. Even though the attackers made no secret of their identity, noone in Parliament condemned the attack and only the Partido Popular group in the regional parliament did so. The media hardly gave the incident a mention, except to say the Faculty of Law was right-wing. No arrests have been made.

A

guirre goes on to say that this moral disease – which is much more tolerant of left-wing delinquents – is a very serious disease in Spanish society. And she says if you doubt that, just Google "attack on the Faculty of Law (asalto a la Facultad de Derecho)" and the majority of the results will refer to attacks carried out by right-wingers 30 or more years ago.

Fresh face

Writes for the English language version of

T

he accolades have been pouring in, and a new outlook for the Socialists is gaining a long waited momentum – all of this since Susana Díaz took on the Andalusian regional premiership more than two months ago. And since then, the leftleaning media have been having a honeymoon with the 39-year-old. In a country that treats politics as a national sport, speculation is already emerging whether and when Díaz will take over the party’s national leadership. “I have a commitment to Andalusia,” she told El País over the weekend. Still, few doubt that Díaz will take a stab for prime minister’s office, maybe even derailing the longterm goal of Carme Chacon, the former defence minister, who once placed first as the Socialists’ favourite darling not too long ago. But if that isn’t likely to happen during the party’s primaries next year it could take place before the scheduled 2019 elections.

T

he Socialists need a strong fresh candidate if they plan to try to defeat the Partido Popular (PP) in 2015. Unless a catastrophe occurs, there is little doubt that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will be the PP candidate and run for re-election. The only disaster that could keep him from winning is if the current investigation into former PP treasurer Luis Bárcenas continues to snowball with more juicy allegations of secret payoffs made inside the party emerging to capture more headlines in the Spanish press. But keeping a story alive for the next two years is difficult if there are not any new ingredients – better yet, a smoking gun – to create more public outrage. The Bárcenas affair has angered citizens but people tend to forget about the many things that appeared in the news the year after they occurred. And it will be an uphill task for the Socialists to keep reminding Spaniards what we were

going through, including the painful austerity measures, in 2012, especially if the economy starts to perk up by the time the next elections roll around.

W

ith a new outlook, Susan Díaz has a responsibility to show her constituents what the Socialist government can do in Andalusia – a region with the second highest unemployment rate in the country. That task is even more of a priority now that many of the party’s members, including former premiers José Antonio Griñán and Manuel Chaves could be targets in the ongoing judicial investigation into fraud that took place when the Socialist government set up a public layoff fund, better known as the ERE case.

B

ut Díaz has set her goals high in trying to create jobs – a difficult task at this stage – and trying to win back voters’ confidence. As secretary general of the Andalusia Socialists (PSOE-A), she controls the largest regional group of Socialist voters in the country. She hasn’t won any election, as she puts it, because her job was handed to her on a plate by Griñán who decided to step aside for personal reasons. Díaz was his best choice, and she brought in her own team of advisors, replacing those who could also be contaminated by the ERE scandal that continues to set off political shockwaves in the region. It will be up to her to determine if she can take control of the situation and slide by without being affected by the judicial case. If she can prove herself, she can certainly jump directly to a national leadership role, even without having an election victory – for now – under her belt.

Community News Pilot scheme for ex-pat voters British Expatriates going home for Christmas are being encouraged to participate in a Pilot Scheme that could improve registration to vote on line.

Currently expatriates wishing to vote in the British and European Parliamentary elections must complete a Registration Form (downloaded from the Electoral Commission website), sign it and then post it to their local UK electoral office. Once registered, they can vote in person in the UK, or apply for a postal or proxy vote via the internet.

While this is not a difficult process, the aim is to make it even easier, and new Government proposals could, if proved viable, lead to direct

registration on line, rather than the existing procedure of posting a signed form to the U.K.

The Chairman of the Costa del Sol Conservatives Abroad, Ann Covell, welcomed this news, which she feels may pave the way for the removal of a voting ban on expatriates who have lived abroad for 15 years or more.

"We are trying at the moment to encourage more people to register for voting" she said. "I believe the current discussions and moves taking place within Government are reassuring. The CrossParty committee considering the "15-year rule" and the new plans for registration are quite positive, and hopefully will mean that all expatriates

will have a say in the running of their country in the future."

A "Testing Day" for the planned new registration process, organise by the Government Digital Services, will take place on December 17th in London. Any expatriates who are in the UK at that time can participate in this important test. To book a place at the event, e-mail Kelley Frizelleon on kelley@bunnyfoot.com. Testing sessions take up to 45 minutes to complete. A similar "Testing Day" took place in Oxford in October.

After making their purchases of both chocolate and turron – and many other sweetmeats – visitors moved on to the Museum of Anis where they enjoyed a short and informative talk about the distillation of Anis.

Scenes from the local area have been incorporated in the mammoth display, the actual Belen taking up less space than usual. Another innovation was at the Turron Museum across the road from the

The concerts show the very diverse characteristics of the national musical traditions of our European heritage across the centuries. Elegant and rather restrained French carols, more serious and straight-forward German carols, English and Irish carols, heavily influenced by the folk music of Britain, and down-to-earth Spanish carols, full of life and colour. saving Mr Banks Directed by John Lee Hancock starring Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks, Paul Giamatti When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favourite book, Mary Poppins, little did the maestro know that it would take 20 years to deliver on his promise. Move forward to 1961, and author PL Travers travels from London to LA to meet Disney, who discovers that the waspish, curmudgeonly author is determined to stand firm in the face of his entreaties. She despised the so-called magic of Disney and had no intention of letting her story be mauled by Hollywood. But the books had stopped selling and times were tight, so Travers was forced to listen to Disney’s plans to turn her treasured book into a movie. And the rest, as they say, is history. Mary Poppins is one of the most enduring and endearing movies in Hollywood history – but it was no easy ride to bring it to the silver screen. Movie insiders have known all about the testy, combative discussions that took place

Millions tune in for Doctor Who 50th anniversary shoW More than 10 million people tuned in to see the special 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who in the UK, according to overnight viewing figures. At its peak, the show was watched by 10.61 million viewers, with an average of 10.2 million across the 75minute running time. It comfortably beat X Factor on ITV, which was seen by 7.7 million people.

before movie magic could be made and the Disney studio has now brought this into the public domain in a witty, charming, and at times moving tale. Travers was protective of her literary creation, and a stickler for facts, grammar and spelling (the Sherman brothers were responsible for dreaming up Supercalifragilisticexpialid ocious – cue for a great sight gag) and appeared immoveable, until finally she gave way as Disney

unlocked some of her childhood memories, which turned out to be the keys to securing the deal. With top class performances, an engaging story and smart, witty dialogue, it’s an amusing behind-thescenes look into how a much-loved book became an adored movie which has enthralled generations of kids and their mums and dads. Thompson’s performance has been generating awards speculation.

But Strictly Come Dancing was Saturday night's most popular show, peaking at 11.7 million viewers (10.6m average).

'Beautiful reinvention'

The Day of the Doctor was broadcast in 94 countries at the same time as it aired on BBC One on Saturday night – earning it a Guinness World Record as "the world's largest ever simulcast of a TV drama". Featuring three Doctors – Matt Smith, David

Tennant and John Hurt – it delved deep into the character's psyche over 75 minutes. Amid the special effects and multiple time zones, critics were particularly impressed with the interplay between actors.

Opening with the show's original credit sequence from 1963, the special featured the Daleks and the return of rubber suited, shape-shifting aliens the Zygons, who first appeared in 1975. But the principal villain was potentially the Doctor himself.

Moffat's story played with the idea, introduced when the science-fiction show re-launched in 2005, that the Doctor was the "last of the Time Lords".

It transpired that Hurt's version of the Doctor had committed mass genocide in order to halt a "Great Time War" – and the 75-

minute episode saw him fighting to come to terms with that decision, aided by two future versions of himself. There were also cameos from former star Tom Baker, and Peter Capaldi, who replaces Smith later this year.

To celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who the BBC Shop produced a special limited edition print for each Doctor, releasing one each month during 2013. David Tennant's print is pictured above and is priced at £79.99 only available from the BBC shop.

Even though you are just about as busy as you can be, this could also be a good time to think look at ways to improve your finances and your health. There are a lot of temptations around enabling you to indulge at your whim especially as the Christmas festivities are beginning to start. A relationship could do with some nurturing – set time aside to give some attention to the one you love. Anything that is hidden this week has a way of finding itself exposed so be careful not to put anything you care about or value at risk – keep the high ground and let others know how much you appreciate them. You can get a lot done at the moment particularly if you push hard for what you want. A lifestyle change is on the cards and if you put your heart and soul into something then you are likely to succeed. The timing just never seems to be right and maybe that is because it isn’t yet, however, you will need to be able to take instant action when everything aligns. Put in the extra hours and tie up all loose ends before the month end. Lately, you are putting out an energy that allows others to feel safe and willing to be honest with you, making it a perfect time for intimate gatherings.

This is not the time to be inflexible or stubborn although you will be severely tempted to dig your heels in. Keep an open mind and pay attention to the details, be prepared with facts, figures and proof as others will hold you accountable later on. Time is on your side and now isn’t the time to make a move so refuse to be rushed before you are ready.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

These golden breadcrumbed fillets are perfect served with a saucy pasta. We first had this dish at The Venta Miralmonte on the Alhaurin to Coin road, and it really was very very moreish.

Pork Escalope with Spaghetti Ingredients:

(Serves 2)

• 1 garlic clove • ½ tsp (2.5ml) Worcester sauce • 1 medium free range egg, lightly beaten • 1 tsp sugar • 2 pork steaks • 40g (1½oz) breadcrumbs • 10g (¼oz) Parmesan cheese • 100g (4oz) spaghetti • 1 tbsp (15ml) olive oil • 200g (7oz) chopped tomatoes • pinch chili flakes Directions Prep time: 20 mins Cooking time: 25 mins

Let your actions speak volumes and do all the talking for you this week as you are becoming a force for positive change right now. You really can make a difference – just make sure you take care of personal matters as well, as this will ease up on your own stress levels. Others may need your help and assistance too – trust your gut instincts and you will know what to do.

Spending time with those whom you find inspirational will be of strong benefit to you helping you to find ways to reach your goals. Getting involved and contributing to the local community can be fun and satisfying whilst improving your network. Early next week the focus moves more towards home and family with chores to be tackled and preparations to get under way.

Distractions are your greatest enemy at the moment, focus on doing one thing at a time, perhaps make a priority list for each day and work your way through it. There is maybe a dream that you are working on, the kind that could completely transform your life and living conditions. Be patient and continue to set up the long-term conditions for it to happen.

This past year has been a roller coaster ride for you in many ways, showing you both extreme emotional highs and lows. Everything is changing and all that is a long time overdue will slowly be falling into your lap. Rewards and success will eventually find you and you will realise that there is a lot more strength and power to your talents and abilities.

Be wary when mixing business with pleasure this week – it is important to maintain your balance in the things you are doing. It could be difficult to remain objective so just have patience and resist trying to make everything happen right now. You will stand out in the crowd and be noticed by others with your charm and charisma causing some to want to get close and personal with you.

Put yourself first Capricorn and do and enjoy the things you want to for a change. New insights and understandings are pouring into your life and although it is too soon to come to conclusions take the time to reflect and ponder on it all. This is a moment when things automatically seem to go your way without you having to exert much control – they happen the way you want.

There could be external pressure, perhaps someone is getting you to agree to something that you really don’t approve of and you could feel that you are being manipulated in some way. Be firm and stand your ground. Make sure that you are on top of all legal issues and this will take the pressure off. Your intuition is sky high so learn to trust your inner knowing.

Remain consistent in all that you do – that is the key this week. You will just want to mind your own business and get on with tasks, chores and obligations but there are other things going on that may not let you have a quiet time. You could find yourself lifted up to a higher level of recognition or wealth by those that have not noticed you in the past and are now knocked out by your current magnetic energy.

1. Crush the garlic and stir into the egg. Then mix the breadcrumbs with the Parmesan and set aside. 2. Using a rolling pin bash the pork until 1cm (¾in) thin, then dip each pork steak into the egg mix followed by the breadcrumbs, coating each well. 3. In a small saucepan bring the chopped tomatoes, chili, Worcester sauce and sugar to the boil. Leave to simmer gently for 10 minutes.

4. Meanwhile boil the pasta according to pack instructions (approximately 8-10 minutes) then drain and toss through the tomato sauce. 5. Pour the oil into a large saucepan and place over a medium heat. Add the pork steaks and fry on each side for 6-8 minutes until golden and cooked through. Serve the pork with the spaghetti and scatter with basil to serve.

Agua - Water

SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

Magazine N 21

El agua is water. It is a feminine word but because it would sound really silly to say "la agua" we have to say el agua. So, it looks masculine but it isn't. We say el agua fría - cold water. Agua dulce is fresh water and agua salada is salt water.

El aguanieve is sleet, not something we see a lot of here, thank goodness. (Mind you, remember those "granizos" hailstones we had last week? Very impressive.) And un aguafiestas is also something you can probably do without. It is a party pooper or wet blanket.

As water is such an everyday necessity there are many idioms and proverbs using it as an image. If you say Estoy con el agua al cuello - it means I am up to my neck in it or I have a lot of problems. If something is más claro que el agua - clearer than water - it means that it is obvious. Something that is agua pasada is a thing of the past.

Ha pasado mucha agua bajo el puente means that a lot of water has passed under the bridge. To make someone's mouth water is hacerle agua la boca a alguien. Se me hizo agua la boca - It made my mouth water.

And to finish off, a wee proverb Agua pasada no mueve molino. Literally it means that water that has already passed doesn't make the mill move. In English we would say that it's no use crying over spilt milk.

Ya está - That's it. Hasta la próxima - Until next time Valerie Valerie runs the Centro Idiomas Language School in Coin.

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

How do I stop my lips from cracking and bleeding in winter? Maxine, Alora Dear Maxine,

The air indoors is usually very dry when fires and heaters are hard at work, while the wind outside can be very chilling. This causes rapid evaporation of moisture from the lips. The skin tissue on the mouth is very delicate and thin, and can become so dry that it cracks and bleeds. Use a lip balm – preferably one that has a high content of Shea butter in it to stop lips from chapping. A creamy

Lords

lipstick worn over this balm will also help. Don't pull off bits of skin – lips will bleed more and can get infected. You can always exfoliate the lips with a very gentle exfoliator – don’t use a harsh grain-based exfoliator but a soft gel that turns into an oil after massaging it in. Then apply a hydrating face mask.

Remember to apply the lip balm several times a day particularly when going outside. Dear Sue,

The skin on my neck looks papery and dingy. What can I do? Vicky, Fuengirola

Dear Vicky,

The skin on the neck is quite fragile, it has less oil glands and is thinner, so it dries out easily and can look papery even on young women. Always use a neck cream and remember when cleansing and toning to include the neck and décolletage area. Sun exposure breaks down – skin's elasticity compensate with a good serum to boost collagen and elastin production. Don't forget to use a protective sun screen on these areas even in winter. Dear Calvin,

I have recently finished chemo. How long do I have to wait before I can have a colour on my hair? Gillian, Torrox

Dear Gillian,

I would advise calling your doctor to get the go ahead before colouring your hair. Most doctors will advise a period of six months because the new hair has a problem holding the colour. I would advise going for a temporary colour which contains no peroxide. Your hair is still in a weakened state after your chemo and could take up to a year to regain it's normal strength. Dear Calvin,

What is the difference between foil highlights and spatula highlights? Sue, Mijas Dear Sue,

When using foil, you

weave individual sections of the hair, place the foil underneath the woven pieces and apply the colour. You then wrap the foil into a pack to seal the colour in while it processes. A spatula is a highlighting device that looks like a paddle with teeth on the end. A section of hair is taken, and then the teeth end is drawn through, creating separate sections. The colour is then applied to the hair. Foiling hair gives you a much better result. It may take longer to apply to the hair, but if done properly you should get really nice individual highlights.

Using a spatula is a lot quicker than foiling, but as there is no protection with the foil to seal the

colour, it often spreads to other parts of the hair when developing, giving you a block colour result rather than individual highlights.

Foiling requires much more skill to apply and spatula highlights are often known as 'the lazy man’s highlights'. Eating nuts 'may Children 'slower runners than their prolong life' People who don't nibble at nuts very often should take advantage of the Christmas season to get into a habit which experts now say could prolong life. Researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital People in the US followed nearly 120,000 people for 30 years and found that people who ate nuts once a week were 11% less likely to have died during the study than those who never ate nuts.

Up to four portions was linked to a 13% reduction in deaths and a daily handful of nuts cut the death rate during the study by 20%. The US team said nut eaters were also likely to lead healthy lifestyles – including being less likely to smoke or be overweight and more likely to exercise

– but the nuts themselves

were also contributing to their longer lifespan. They also suggested that nuts are lowering cholesterol, inflammation and insulin resistance. A spokesman for the British Heart Foundation said: "This study shows an association between regularly eating a small handful of nuts and a lower risk of death from coronary heart disease.

"While this is an interesting link, we need further research to confirm if it's the nuts that protect heart health, or other aspects of people's lifestyle.

"Nuts contain unsaturated fats, protein and a range of vitamins and minerals and make a good swap for snacks like chocolate bars, cakes and biscuits."

parents were' Many children cannot run as fast as their parents could when they were young, a study of global fitness has found. Researchers at the University of South Australia's School of Health Sciences analysed data spanning 46 years and involving more than 25 million children in 28 countries and found that, on average, children today run a mile 90 seconds slower than their counterparts did 30 years ago.

Across nations, cardiovascular endurance – gauged by how far children can run in a set time – has dwindled consistently by about 5% every decade, according to the findings. The decline is seen in boys and girls and across all ages from nine to 17 years, and is linked to obesity, with some countries faring worse than others. They said the problem is largely one of Western countries, but some parts of Asia like

South Korea, mainland China and Hong Kong are also seeing this phenomenon. They recommended that children should be inspired and encouraged to do more vigorous exercise, otherwise the public health consequences could be dire.

To stay healthy, children and young people need to do at least an hour of physical activity – such as walking or cycling to school and running in the playground – every day. It can be done in small chunks rather than one session. A spokesman for the British Heart Foundation, said it was well established that being physically inactive in childhood can have serious health implications later in life: "Keeping active can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and the sooner kids start, the better."

It may have been a great performance but most red-blooded women will think of Sean as all man.

Three international Emmy awards for the UK … though the lovely Mr Bean in a frock leaves a lot to be desired! The International Emmy Awards, hosted by Brit comedian John Oliver, took place earlier this week and the UK won three.

Bernard Cornwall’s Sharpe hunk Sean Bean won a gong for Best Actor for his portrayal of a literature teacher who goes to nightclubs dressed as a transvestite in "Accused". In true Bean fashion as he picked up his award he said: “I've never actually really won anything before!" Also on the Brit list of honours was a special honour, the Founders Award, that went to producer-director J. J. Abrams for his work on the TV series “Lost”, and for films “Star Trek” and the new “Star Wars: Episode VII” that will soon be hitting the screens. He said it was a “privilege beyond words” to work in television and thanked his wife for

her “support and brutal honesty”.

The UK’s third award was the award for Best Comedy which went to "Moone Boy," a TV series about an 11-year-old boy with an adult imaginary friend.

In recent years the UK has positively dominated these awards but this year 19 countries were represented in the awards with Australia, South Korea and Germany all winning one while France and Brazil won two. The arts programming award was a tie between South Korea's "Hello? Orchestra," about a multi-cultural children's orchestra, and the United Kingdom's "Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender," about the late lead singer of the band Queen.

Brazilian actress Fernanda Montenegro won best performance by an actress for her role as an elderly woman determined to enjoy what time she has left in "Sweet Mother". Germany's "A Day for a Miracle," about a young doctor's valiant effort to save the life of a four-year-old girl presumed drowned, won the award for TV movie or miniseries, and Brazil's "Side by Side" was named outstanding telenovela.

The award for non-scripted, or reality series was won by Australia's "Go Back to Where You Came From," in which prominent Australians on opposing sides of the asylum issue travel to desperate and dangerous corners of the world.

Dead fish-like we ain’t! There was a time, and not that many years ago either, that someone described the sexual activities of the Britsh as being akin to a dead cod. Now, however, we can put that all behind us as a new

survey revealed that us Brits are a right lot of hotties with attitudes to “casual” sex changing dramatically over the years.

The National Survey of

Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles found that among the 15,000 people surveyed British men and women are having increasingly adventurous sex, with more partners, well into old age.

First carried out in 1990, the survey has been repeated every 10 years with this new survey showing that 31% of men and 29% of women aged between 16 and 24 had sex before the age of 16, the same as the survey held in the year 2000. It also showed that Brits are forgiving of some sex experiences but not of extramarital sex and that more people, 60% of men and 42% of women aged 65-74 reported that they had had at least one opposite sex sexual partner in the past year.

However, the overall frequency of sexual encounters since the last survey has dropped from an average six times a month to five. Women were way behind the number of sexual partners they had

compared to men in the past, but they are catching up fast. Women aged 1644 now have an average of 7.7 partners, compared with 3.7 in 1990. Men now have 11.7, up from 8.6 in the last survey.

There has been a small increase in men who have ever had a same-sex partner – up from 3.6% to 4.8%. But there has been a big rise in women having a same-sex partner, up from 1.8% to 7.9%. The survey shows 20% of men see "nothing wrong" in a onenight stand, a figure that is unchanged from the 1990 survey. For women, the figure has risen from 5.4% to 13%.

One wonders what the results would be of the same survey being carried out on the French or Spanish?!

Brian dies in car accident Brian the talking dog is no more. Fans of TV show Family Guy had been told that one of the characters in the long running hit show was to be removed but they were shocked when Brian, the family dog, met his demise under the wheels of a car and have taken to Twitter and other social websites to express their disgust at the way he was written out and have even launched a campaign to “Bring Back Brian”. Will it be a case of mistaken identity or could he miraculously recover at the vet’s? And what’s more to the point, would the unfeeling producers of the show even allow it? He has now been

Steve Callaghan, the executive producer of Family Guy, said once the idea of killing off Brian had been suggested it “caught fire”. “We thought it could be a fun way to shake things up. We got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters."

In the second of two programmes, Liz Bonnin focuses on relationships between animals and humans, meeting people who have sought out unusual and, in certain cases, potentially dangerous friendships with some surprising creatures. Can science explain how a hippo can become part of a family, why a polar bear would let a man give it a hug and how it is possible for a human to join a pack of hyenas without being harmed? Travelling the world, she tries to find out what lies at the heart of these and other surprising pairings.

With reference to the “name supplied” letter in last week’s, November 20th edition of The News. I knew Hacienda (Inland Revenue) and a few official bodies – for example the chamber of commerce – can instruct the Hacienda to

claim debts for them, but I don't think just any Tom, Dick, or Harry can withdraw money from your private bank account. Does anybody out there know who can officially dip into your account?

Denise Walker Can you help with any of the following items:

* dog kennels * dog transporters * dog beds * towels, blankets or sheets * collars, leads or dog bowls.

These items don't have to be new as they will be sent or given to various refuges

Editor says: Certainly the Town Halls can, for anything from nonpayment on time of your IBI (rates), water, or car taxes, plus any unpaid Social Security. Maybe they’re all called Tomas, Ricardo or Enrique!

who are in desperate need, especially as the weather is getting cold.

or dog food in our red bin when you next visit the shop?

Why not drop a tin of cat

Thank you for your help and consideration.

The kennels and transporters can be dropped off at Cat and Dog World Kennels in Alhaurin el Grande and the towels etc can be dropped at the CHAIN Charity shop in La Trocha.

If you have received emails from CHAIN and have asked to be taken off the list please be patient as you will be omitted by the November newsletter.

On Monday 11th November and for the very first time, a Remembrance Day event was held in Parque de la Paloma in Benalmádena adjacent to the Spanish flag pole – for some strange reason the flag had been removed the week before.

Initiated by an International French organisation, UFE, it was also attended by the Mayoress of Benalmádena, Paloma Garcia Gálvez, the Councillor for Foreign

& Stargazing

Opinion & Comment N 27

WEDNESDAY, November 27th 2013

Residents, Adolfo Fernández, representatives from RAFA Costa del Sol, RBL Benalmádena and a Benalmádena-based Organisation for Peace and Reconciliation.

The ceremony was scheduled to start at 1 p.m., which caused rumblings from some Brits who felt it should commence in time for the one minute’s silence at midday. The reason for the delay was that the French organiser had attended the ceremony at the Cenotaph in London the previous day and had spent the morning returning to Spain. Surely it was more important that the event took place rather than a strict adherence to timing?

After a short delay – we are in Spain after all – the ceremony finally got under way, with an address by the French representative, the RBL Exhortation was read, the RAFA dedication was read by Reg Haywood and an address by the Peace Organisation

in all three languages.

The addresses were followed by a one minute silence during which the RBL and RAFA standards were dipped. Flowers and wreaths were then laid by the stone adjacent to the flag pole. Strangely all the acts, speeches and wreath laying, were greeted with bursts of applause from the good sized crowd gathered to witness the ceremony. The ceremony was concluded by a speech from Paloma Garcia thanking all those who took part. It is hoped that this ceremony will be an annual event.

The photo below shows the participants awaiting the commencement of the ceremony, adjacent to the French, Spanish and RAF Association flags. Note that the RAFA flag towers above them all.

Cometh the Comet Astronomers around the world are gearing up this week for what has been dubbed ‘The Comet of the Century’.

C

omet Ison (pictured) has been observed for over a year now since its discovery in September 2012 when it was out near the orbit of Jupiter. It is big, about twice the size of Gibraltar, and is made mainly from frozen water ice and frozen gases. The best description of a comet is a ‘dirty snowball’. It is a remnant from the earliest beginnings of the Solar System. t began its journey toward us perhaps a million years ago from an area on the very extreme edge of the Solar System called the Oort Cloud. It is believed that millions of comets live out here – slowly orbiting the Sun and being held in place by the weakest of gravitational force from the Sun. omething must have disturbed Ison, possibly by bumping into another comet but this slight deflection made all the difference, and so its slow journey began as the Sun’s gravity took hold. Very slowly at first, then as it got closer towards the inner Solar System it began to gather speed. t passed close by Mars on October 1st 2013 and NASA used the cameras on the two Mars Rovers to turn skyward and catch the first glimpse of the comet as it sped by. In just one month it had crossed the Earth’s orbit on 1st October (if only we could travel as fast as a comet then visiting the planets would be a cinch). Fortunately when the Comet crossed the Earth’s orbit we were a long way from it, it also came from ‘below’ the Earth and so was not visible from the Northern Hemisphere. y November 11th it had reached the orbit of Venus and on November 23rd it had crossed the innermost planet Mercury. It is now screaming toward the Sun at over a quarter of a million miles an hour and tomorrow evening 28th November at 20.00h it will swing to within a million miles of the Sun; remember, the Moon is only a quarter of a million miles from Earth so in astronomy terms that is REALLY close! he sun will be enormous from the comet’s point of view, filling the comet’s sky and boiling its surface to a temperature of about 2,700 degrees C (4,900 degrees F). That’s hot enough to melt iron, not to mention ice. The Sun’s gravity will then slingshot it around the Sun and back out in to space in our direction.

I

S I

B T

W

hen it emerges from the other side of the Sun no one is really quite sure what will happen. As it passes from the cold outer solar system and into the heat of the sun, some of its ice will evaporate, releasing gases and dust. These could expand by thousands or even millions of miles to become the comet’s glowing head (“coma”) and tail, and it will become a spectacular sight in our skies all through December reaching its closest position to the Earth on Boxing Day. r if the comet breaks into pieces around or after closest approach, the pieces won’t disperse too far apart. Therefore more icy surface area would be exposed to the solar boiling, more dust and gas would blow off to make a bigger and brighter tail, and the December dawn show could be glorious. n the other hand, the Sun’s immense gravitational field along with the intense heating may be just too much for the comet and it will be torn apart and fizzle out to nothing. Everyone is rooting for the little guy. Come on Ison, you can make it! rom around 3rd December the comet should be visible in the eastern dawn sky just before sunrise. Throughout December it will rise higher in the sky and move further away from the Sun. And by Christmas it should be a magnificent sight in the evening skies as it heads toward the North Star. r then again it might go the way of Comet Kahoutek back in 1973 that turned out to be the anticlimax of the century. All fingers are crossed for the safe journey around the Sun and hopefully this could be something you might want to tell your grandchildren about – that you saw The Comet Of The Century!

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel brought the F1 season to a close with victory in an action-packed Brazilian Grand Prix. He controlled the race, despite a scare caused by a pit-stop mix-up, to equal the record of nine

Vettel sets another record as Webber bows out of F1 at least some consolation for Mark Webber as he clinched third place in his final world championship season, and a great drive to second place in the Brazilian Grand Prix – enough to vault him past both Lewis Hamilton and the absent Kimi Raikkonen.

Webber's second place at Interlagos was the 42nd podium finish of a career that has spanned 215 races. He has taken nine victories and narrowly missed out on

the world championship in 2010. His final race was marked by a close battle with Alonso, whose career has spanned exactly the same number of races. Webber twice had to pass the Spaniard to move into second place before edging clear in the closing laps.

Fernando Alonso drove a great race to close out the podium and admitted "A podium is the best way to end this long season.

Finishing behind two Red Bulls almost tastes like a victory, as well as being the maximum we could have done today."

Webber had been in fifth coming into the weekend, but with Hamilton dropping to ninth after a drive through penalty for causing a collision, the Australian was able to advance into third place in the final standings, ten points clear of Hamilton. The top two

spots in the drivers’ championship had already been clinched by Sebastian Vettel (back in India) and Fernando Alonso (last week in Austin.) McLaren had their best finish of the season with Jenson Button arguably the drive of the day to finish 4th, and in his last race for the team Sergio Perez finishing in 6th after starting from 19th on the grid.

Classics in the Serrania de Ronda

SOL Classic Car Club members enjoyed a spectacular run this month, organised by new members Brooke and Camille Harris – the first (but hopefully not the last) time either had attempted to put together a driving route. Starting out from Venta Gallardo on the edge of the Sierras de la Nieves the drive took in the challenging mountain route up into El Burgo and on to Ronda, unforgettable for the changing scenery and majestic rock formations. After a short break outside Ronda the drivers then took to the small roads heading round Montejaque (where the reservoir was empty after the incredibly dry autumn we are having), Benaojan and up towards the Cueva de la Pileta where the cars parked up and a welcome drink and tapas were served. The air was cool in the mountains but so clear that cameras could not stop clicking. And several local Spanish families actually visiting the caves stopped for a chat, joined the club members for tapas and also took photographs – but not of the views since they were all fascinated by the classic cars!

Then it was on through Jimera de Libar and round to Gaucin. This part of the route was quite beautiful with the turning leaves on the chestnut trees forming a patchwork of gold, rust and brown amongst the evergreen pine trees. The sun worked its magic too,

although drivers kept glancing nervously at threatening black clouds which seemed to move in every direction while not actually dropping their contents on lovingly polished paintwork.

Finally descending from

the mountains it was time for lunch at a venta just inland from Estepona followed by a drive home on the adjacent motorway.

A great day out was had by everyone, and amazingly the hailstones and rain experienced by stay-at-

From tragedy to triumph for Jason Day A tearful Jason Day hugged his mother, Dening, and his sisters, Kim and Yanna, on the 18th green after an emotional victory at the World Cup at Royal Melbourne. The family lost eight relatives in the Philippines typhoon disaster, including Day’s maternal grandmother. Dening, who migrated to Australia from the Philippines 30 years ago, officially discovered her mother had perished last Saturday morning, but insisted that her son play alongside Adam Scott for Australia.

Australia won the 2013 World Cup of Golf with Jason Day crowning the achievement by taking out the individual title.

at the start of the day but those two eagles soon put them comfortably in front and the Aussies ended on 17 under par 10 in front of the Americans, with Denmark a stroke further back.

Day and teammate Adam Scott took the prestigious title for Australia for the first time in 24 years in front of a rapt local crowd at Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

It was Day’s first win since his one and only title at the 2010 Byron Nelson on the US PGA Tour and thanks to Scott continues what has been a triumphant year Australian golf.

Asked about whether he was going to support the relief efforts in the Philippines, Day said: "Definitely, we'll probably most likely set something up and definitely be giving some money or raising money and trying to raise awareness to what has really happened over there.

"The devastation and the tragedy that's gone on over in the Philippines is very difficult for us to see because we're living in such a great country.

Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner Bowls: 2013 Miraflores Open arrested and cautioned Premier League footballer Nicklas Bendtner has apologised after being cautioned for criminal damage at his apartment block in Hertfordshire. The Arsenal striker, 25, was arrested by police on Monday over damage to the building in the Bushey area where he lives.

On his Instagram account he said he had accidentally damaged a stuck door when he tried to force it.

Mr Bendtner was given a caution by Hertfordshire Police.

Night swim

"On Saturday night after our win against Southampton I went out with my family and friends

for dinner," he wrote. "After our dinner we all wanted a night swim in my gym so we changed to shorts and brought towels down. As we arrived at the gym my key fob changed the colour from red (locked) to green (open) but the door remained closed. We thought the door was stuck so we tried to open it and it caused some damage. I apologise for any inconvenience for my neighbours and I have paid in full. We had no part in damaging anything else in the building. The matter is closed with the police, and my focus is on tonight's match."

The caution Mr Bendtner received means he will not have to go to court.

Lowering shorts

A spokesman for Arsenal said the club did not comment on players' private matters. "However, we do expect the highest standards to be maintained on and off the pitch and will be reminding Nicklas of this," he added.

The Denmark international has scored 45 goals since making his debut for Arsenal in the 2005-06 season. In June 2012, Bendtner was handed a one-match ban and fined 100,000 euros by Uefa for lowering his shorts after scoring twice in his country's European Championship defeat to Portugal.

He was found guilty of improper conduct for his reaction to his second goal in the 3-2 Group B defeat, when he exposed underwear bearing a bookmaker's logo – with the company paying the fine.

This year’s Miraflores Open was held from Monday 11th November until Tuesday 19th November. The bumper entry for the tournament was only a few short of last year’s record with over 330 entries for the different categories, which was another excellent achievement for this perennially popular competition. The weather was exceptional throughout the tournament with the sun shining and no time lost. This was especially true on finals day which was blessed with blue skies and glorious sunshine which ensured a large audience of spectators who turned out to see the day’s play. The Mixed Triples final was between Alan Turner, Susan Walker & Mike Glithero (Santa

Maria) against Robert & Carol Wright & Chris Ryecroft (Mijas). Both teams had played extremely well to win their semi-finals, but Robert’s team never got going and Alan’s team dominated the final with some excellent bowling to win comfortably 25-7. The Mixed Pairs final was between Malcolm Greenwood & Diane Johnson and John & Eleanor Morgan (all from Benavista). John & Eleanor winning their first championship. Finally, we reached the climax of the competition, the Men’s & Ladies’ singles finals. The Ladies’ singles final saw Barbara Land of Mijas (defending champion and winner in 2009) against Margaret Kain of Santa

Maria (runner-up in 2010 and 2011). Barbara Land won her third championship in a fascinating tussle. The Men’s singles final had Brian Todd of Belplaya (winner for the last three years) against Andy Salmon of Superbowl. After a match of high quality Brian won his fourth consecutive title. Finally, during the last few days of the competition a collection bucket was placed by the green to collect money for the victims of the Phillipines typhoon which resulted in €180 being raised.

Rugby League World Cup 2013: England 'distraught' after defeat Coach Steve McNamara said England were "distraught" after the World Cup semi-final defeat by New Zealand.

Shaun Johnson scored a try with seconds remaining before kicking the decisive conversion as the world champion Kiwis won 20-18 at Wembley Stadium.

"We are bitterly, bitterly disappointed," said McNamara, who is now out of contract. "The team showed great

determination but sport at the very elite level can be cruel."

The host nation built an 8-0 lead but conceded 14 straight points, then battled back to 18-14 up, before Johnson struck with the last play of an absorbing contest. England skipper Kevin Sinfield missed a relatively straightforward conversion attempt that would have put his team 20-14 in front and later failed to tackle Johnson after rushing off the line. Ryan Hall could

not quite hold on with an attempted intercept, while George Burgess conceded a penalty in the final minute to hand the Kiwis the set from which Johnson scored.

Jonathan Trott leaves Ashes tour Australia batsman David Warner has admitted he "went a little bit too far" when he described Jonathan Trott as "poor and weak" during the first Test. Warner was speaking before it was announced Trott had left England's Ashes tour with a long-standing stressrelated condition. "I made those comments for a reason," Warner said. "[On Sunday] the bounce and pace got to them again. "It is Ashes cricket – probably went a little bit too far with the comments." England captain Alastair Cook accused Warner, 27, of being "disrespectful" when he made the comments during a news conference at the end of the third day.

Trott scored only 19 runs in the match as England crumbled to a 381-run defeat inside four days at the Gabba in Brisbane. Following Trott's second-innings dismissal, when he struggled against the pace of Mitchell Johnson, former England captain Michael Vaughan was also critical of the England number three's performances. However, Vaughan admits he now regrets making those comments in light of what the player has been dealing with off the pitch. Australia captain Michael Clarke describes his side's conduct in the first Ashes Test as "banter" after he was heard telling England tailender Jimmy Anderson to expect a broken arm while batting. Clarke said there was "mutual respect" between the two sides off the field and that sledging was "part and parcel of the game". The Australian skipper was speaking before the Trott issue came to light.

The president of the Gibraltar FA wants to host Spain one day, even though UEFA have kept the two countries apart in the next qualifying session. Following the shock goalless draw with Slovakia, the tiny British territory’s first official match since being accepted as a UEFA member, Gibraltar FA chief Dennis Beiso told Eurosport, a match with Spain would have a wider resonance, as the Federation of the world and European champions has repeatedly blocked Gibraltar’s membership of sporting federations, including a UEFA application in 2007.

Malaga beaten again Monday night at La Rosaleda: Malaga 1 - 2 Athletic Bilbao Malaga started brightly, and the pressure nearly paid off after a bad pass back to the keeper from Mikel San Jose but the keeper did well to clear. Athletic soon began to find their feet and were pulling Malaga’s defense apart with some accurate long passes. Though the Basques were able to keep possession early on, they weren't able to convert it into goals. Malaga put a few crosses into Athletic’s box, but to no avail. The visitors enjoyed most of the possession and build up play, but it was Malaga that were having the best chances in front of goal. The Malaga players were getting frustrated with the ref and his constant whistling up of fouls, in what was becoming a very physical encounter. After several warnings Samuel was handed a yellow card and Athletic began to go on the offensive even more. Some good passages of play nearly led to a great goal for Los Leones but Willy Caballero continued to read the game well and clean up any chances that materialised. After 37 mins Malaga went in front, Juanmi was

found inside the box and the striker expertly placed his header into the top corner to beat Gorka Iraizoz. Tempers were rising between the two sets of players with Weligton getting a yellow card, and the two sides went into the break at halftime with Malaga ahead 1-0. Valverde brought on Markel Susaeta for Ibai Gomez and the change was seen immediately. Athletic began to dominate and string together a few promising chances. In the 69th minute the visitors won a corner and all their hard work finally paid off. Susaeta whipped in a corner which bounced and found the back of the net. Replays showed that San Jose could have touched the ball and he was eventually named the goal-scorer. Malaga then made several

changes, but it would be too late as Los Leones never broke stride. In the 85th minute Ander Herrera sent a nice ball across the face of the goal and Iker Muniain was there to meet it. His first shot was saved but the rebound was put past the keeper to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Malaga pushed forward in the final moments and had their chance to equalise. After the ball struck the arm of Balenziaga on the edge of the box, Malaga were awarded a free kick in the dying moments of extra time. The resulting shot went high over the bar and the final whistle blew. Athletic completed their comeback to take all three points on the road and remain within one point of the fourth place spot in the table. Report by Scott Forbes

Bill Foulkes – Man United legend dies aged 81

Sir Bobby Charlton has led the tributes to Bill Foulkes, his fellow Munich air disaster survivor and Busby Babe, who has died aged 81, saying he had helped change the course of Manchester United's history. Foulkes, who died in the early hours of Monday morning, became captain following the plane crash in Munich in 1958 which claimed the lives of 23 people. He played a key role in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, the first by an English club, including scoring the winning goal in the semifinal against Real Madrid.
