North America arctic blast moves east
The current brutal cold snap headed east on Tuesday, ushering in dangerous temperatures that have not been seen in two decades. From Montana to Maryland, about half of the US population – some 187 million people – has been placed under a wind chill warning or advisory. In Canada, the province of Ontario is facing temperatures of –40C (–40F) with wind chill.
Thousands of flights have been grounded, and residents were told their skin could freeze if they go outside. People on the US north-east coast were
warned to prepare themselves for the cold front which swept in on Tuesday from the Midwest.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that parts of major highways would be closed in preparation for the extreme weather, which could see the mercury plummet to –26C (–15F) overnight with wind chill. The polar blast was threatening crops and

livestock across the American farm belt, even in the usually temperate Deep South. The sub-zero snap was expected to reach as far south as Texas and central Florida, the National Weather Service said. Tennessee and Kentucky were forecast to receive several inches of snow. The weather has been blamed for at least 16 deaths in recent days. The cold snap has been widely blamed on a shift in the weather

An area for nature
We have had a letter in from someone this week who, although I don’t know her personally, lives in the same area as I do. She is complaining about a hunter and, I have to say, I absolutely agree with her. I think whoever this person is must have received a new gun as a Christmas present as he or she seems to let rip at around 8.30am whenever they get the chance. I think they must have a job as it only takes place at the weekends or a bank holiday. The area is very popular with people walking their dogs down by the river and there are always kids about, not necessarily with their parents so this kind of letting off a gun willy nilly is somewhat disturbing. We used to have “no hunting” and “area de reserva” signs up at all the entrances to the campo but these seem to have mysteriously disappeared over time. The whole point of making the place a reserva is so that those living there, humans and animals alike, can live in peace without wondering if you’re going to get shot while out on a Sunday stroll, so I urge Coin Council and the local Guardia Civil to check this out as a matter of urgency and explain to whoever this person turns out to be that there are plenty of places he can let rip in the area but La Carreta isn’t one of them! Jackson, our now 8-monthold puppy has been wearing his naughty hat recently. As I said, we live in the campo so rarely have to put the dogs on a lead. Hanny, our other dog comes back as good as gold but Jackson seems to have it in his head that when he’s called it’s entirely up to him when he decides he wants to come back. He may be running around like a little lunatic (well he’s got to get rid of that energy somehow!) but if there are other dogs or humans in sight, I want him controlled and on his lead. Looks like he’ll be on it for a while until he learns then!

The automobile market has been in crisis since 2007, with 2010 the only other year to see sales grow – also as the result of a government subsidy scheme. Funding for the current phase of the government PIVE scheme, which provides subsidies of up to €2,000 for turning in vehicles and purchasing
new and more environmentally friendly ones, ran out in the middle of December.
Despite that, sales in the final month of the year climbed by 18.2 per cent from the same month a year earlier to 60,513 units.
King: 'We don't want Gibraltar back' According to a report in The Telegraph on Monday, King Juan Carlos told Britain that Spain "did not really want" Gibraltar back because it would renew Morocco's claims for the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.
Newly declassified documents from the 1980s released by the Foreign Office reveal that the King admitted in a meeting in Madrid in July 1983 with the then British ambassador to Madrid, Sir Richard Parsons, that it was "not in Spain's interest to recover Gibraltar in the near future", because "King Hassan would immediately reactivate the Moroccan claim to Ceuta and Melilla". Details of the meeting released last week by the National Archives in Kew are likely to cause some embarrassment, given last
year's clashes between Spain, the UK and Gibraltar and Spain's renewed call for talks over sovereignty.
King Juan Carlos wanted "confidential talks" over Gibraltar between the two foreign ministries to ensure Spain's application for entry into what was then the European Economic Community was not derailed by the issue. In a confidential dispatch to then Foreign Secretary Geoffrey Howe, Ambassador Parsons wrote: "The King emphasised, as he had done with me before, that that requirement was to take some step over Gibraltar which would keep public opinion quiet for the time being. "It should be clearly understood in private by both governments that in fact Spain did not really

In another note sent the same day, he added: "It is perhaps no bad thing that Spanish public opinion, as well as the Spanish government, have begun to understand that the principal aim of Spanish foreign policy, entry into the community, could be shipwrecked on the Rock of Gibraltar." The UK had warned Spain that it would oppose Spain's membership until all restrictions imposed at the border with Gibraltar were lifted. General Francisco Franco had closed the border in 1969 and it was only partially opened in 1982, seven years after his death.
The border was completely opened in 1985, a year before Spain joined the EEC.

Judge summons King’s daughter Examining Judge José Castro has summoned Princess Cristina to appear in court in Palma de Mallorca on March 8th to explain her involvement in the alleged laundering of public money obtained unlawfully by her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin through a private foundation he set up for that purpose. Judge Castro said the princess should testify for two reasons: to clear up the lingering question marks about her role in the case, and to uphold the axiom that “justice is the same for everyone”.
This is the second time that the judge has summoned Princess Cristina in the so-called Nóos case investigation; his first attempt in April of last year was blocked by the Provincial Court of
Palma de Mallorca, where the inquiry is taking place. There is a possibility that the same court will stop the process once more to prevent the princess from testifying in court.
The anticorruption attorney in the Balearic Islands, Pedro Horrach, has said that he sees no evidence linking her to Urdangarin's shady business activities. Urdangarin and his business partner, Diego Torres, are thought to have siphoned off €5.8 million in public money from the regional governments of Valencia and the Balearics between 2004 and 2006. The partners earned government contracts for sports and tourism events without official bids through their non-profit Nóos Institute, and then
channelled much of the money to privately owned companies and offshore tax havens, after overcharging for services which were sometimes nonexistent, according to the investigation.
Last Saturday, the spokesman for the Royal Household, Rafael Spottorno, said during a TV interview that the Nóos inquiry, which began three years ago, has become “agonizing” for the royal family, and publicly asked the judge to close the investigation soon. “We have to trust in the justice system. We have always respected the judge’s duties. But the only thing we ask is that he finish it soon,” Spottorno said. “We believe that all of the reports that needed to be written have already
'Significant' job creation forecast After Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s year-end speech, in which he said 2014 would be the year of economic recovery, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos predicted in an interview broadcast on New Year's Day that the creation of jobs this year would be “significant.”
De Guindos told the radio station Cadena Ser: “In 2014, the projections we have at the Economy Ministry point to a net creation of jobs, even above what we forecast when we drew up the state budget.” De Guindos said that the labour reforms introduced in February 2012 would invigorate the job market – while they made it cheaper and easier to sack workers they also provided more incentives for companies to take people on part-time. Unemployment currently
stands at 26 per cent. The government has predicted GDP growth of 0.7 per cent for this year, but some members of the government believe that figure is modest and that the pace of growth will pick up considerably in the second half of the year.
As for the overhaul of the tax system the government is preparing, De Guindos said the changes will help offset the impact of the hike in personal income tax introduced in 2012 to rein
in the budget deficit.
However, he said the government has no plans for major changes to value-added tax, which was also raised to reduce the shortfall in the government’s finances.

PP split on abortion Catalan premier writes to EU leaders law reform It has been revealed that Catalan premier Artur Mas sent a letter to the leaders of 27 European Union member states on December 20th, urging them to support a referendum the regional government plans for November to allow Catalans to vote on the issue of secession from Spain.
Party "barons," such as Extremadura premier José Antonio Monago and Galicia's Alberto Núñez Feijóo, have publicly questioned the restrictions to the abortion law proposed by Justice Minister Alberto RuizGallardón, and inside sources have predicted that it will be "the debate of the year".
The same sources said Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is trying to play out the two sides of the controversy, although he himself approves of the reform. The Socialist Party has claimed that Rajoy opted for the hardline course to attract the most conservative sectors of the electorate before the European Parliament election in May. However, many sectors of society were uneasy about the abortion law reform passed by the Socialist government in 2010, considering it to be too lax. The PP members who have expressed concern about abortion

reform fear the law will have a negative impact on the party's mainstream electorate and cannot understand why Rajoy and his Cabinet have brought up the issue at this time.
One PP official said: "No one was asking for it, except for an irrelevant minority. It wasn't necessary, and especially now when Rajoy can sell the improved economic figures. It is a serious mistake. We want to keep the most conservative voters happy but it is at a huge cost because we will lose the centre-right,"
Some of the party's top female leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, who PP moderates hope will convey their concerns about the law, have not said a word since the bill was approved by the Cabinet on December 20th.
PP secretary general María Dolores de Cospedal and former Madrid premier Esperanza Aguirre have also remained silent. But that could change when the PP holds its first executive committee meeting of the year this week.
Wind power top source of electricity New figures have revealed that greenhouse gas emissions from the country's power sector may have fallen 23.1 per cent last year, as power generation from wind farms and hydroelectric plants soared. In its preliminary report on the country's power system just before the New Year, Red Eléctrica de España (REE) revealed that for "the first time ever, [wind power] contributed most to the annual electricity demand coverage".
According to the figures, wind turbines met 21.1 per cent of electricity demand, narrowly beating the region's fleet of nuclear reactors, which provided 21 per cent of power. An increase in wind power

emissions from the power sector. Renewable energy firms see the latest figures, and the news last year that Portugal had successfully generated over 70 per cent of its power from renewables during the first quarter of the year, as proof that the sector can provide a high proportion of power to a modern economy without risk of blackouts.
The letter was made public just days after it emerged that Foreign minister José Manuel García-Margallo had sent a letter to Spanish embassies and consulates abroad detailing the arguments envoys should use to explain why secession is not the answer for Catalonia or Spain.
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has already said that the referendum will not take place, arguing that it is unconstitutional. Growing voices from Brussels have also warned that an independent Catalonia would have to negotiate a separate agreement to get back into the European Union.

Private eyes track down counterfeiters The big fashion firms are hiring private detectives to track down the gangs that are distributing counterfeits of their products, after the practice increased by 28 per cent last year. The firms believe money is no object if they

A spokesman for one company told the online newspaper El Confidencial Digital that hiring detectives was saving it a lot of money, "running into

Spain in talks to resolve Panama Canal row
Public Works minister Ana Pastor flew to Panama on Sunday, following a meeting between diplomats on Friday, to try to resolve a row over the expansion of the Panama Canal.
She met President Richard Martinelli and other members of his government on Monday for preliminary talks before meeting representatives of the Panama Canal Authority (PCA) and the Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC, United Group for the Canal) on Tuesday.
(GUPC), is made up of Spain's Sacyr, Italy's Salini Impreglio, Belgium's Jan De Nul, and Panama's Constructora Urbana. Work began on the construction of a third lock for the Canal in 2009, but it has gone overbudget by $1.6 billion (£1bn). The GUPC has threatened to halt work unless the extra money is paid. Sacyr's chairman Manuel Manrique is also
in Panama to attend the negotiations.
The GUPC gave a 21day deadline on December 30th to the Panama Canal Authority to make the extra $1.6 billion payment. If it doesn't, GUPC has said it will stop work on the expansion plans. A spokesperson for Spain's foreign ministry said: "Panama is a country that is close and friendly towards Spain, and we share the desire and interest to find a solution as soon as possible".
Spain's ambassador to Panama, Jesus Silva, added that everyone stands to lose out if the contract falls through. A head of the PCA, Jorge Quijano, said the total expansion is just over 70

Record drop in unemployment
The number of people registered as out of work fell by 107,000 in december, Labour minister Fátima Báñez confirmed last Friday, a day after the Servimedia news agency released the figure. it is the sharpest drop for the month of december since the ministry’s current statistical series began in 1997. Until now, the best figure for unemployment in the last 15 years for december was 2012, when it dropped by 59,094. Last december's fall followed another record drop in November, bringing the overall drop in the number of jobless for last year to 146,293. The number of registered unemployed now stands at 4,701,338, compared with 4,848,723 at the beginning of 2013. Last year was the first year that the number of unemployed fell since the economic crisis began in 2008.

Last year's figure also continues a ten-year decline in road accident fatalities. There were 994 fatal accidents on interurban roads last year, the first time ever the figure was below 1,000. Last year there were also 29 days in which there were no fatalities recorded. in 2012 there were 19 days with no fatalities, 15 in 2011 and 4 in 2010.By gender, the majority of fatalities on the roads are men, accounting for 77% of the overall death toll.

World News US ice-breaker to help stuck ships A US ice-breaker is to help two ships that are trapped in thick ice in Antarctica following a rescue mission.
The Polar Star is 399ft long with a maximum speed of 18 knots, the US Coast Guard said. It can continuously break 6ft of ice at three knots, and can break 21ft of ice by backing and ramming.
The vessel has been diverted from its mission to break a channel through the ice to resupply the US Antarctic research station
on Ross Island – but will return to that task once it has freed the trapped ships. The US ice-breaker is responding to requests for assistance from the Australian authorities as well as from the Russian and Chinese governments, the US Coast Guard said in a statement, and has been asked to cut a path through the ice in order to free the Xue Long and the
Akademik Shokalskiy.
The Chinese boat, Xue Long, became ice-bound after helping to rescue 52 passengers stranded on Akademik Shokalskiy on January 2nd.
The Russian research vessel has been trapped since Christmas Eve. "Our
highest priority is safety of life at sea, which is why we are assisting in breaking a navigational path for both of these vessels," said Vice Admiral Paul Zukunft, commander of Coast Guard Pacific Area. The Polar Star left Sydney, Australia, on Sunday and is expected to take seven days to reach the stranded ships.
Prices of foreign cars shock Cubans Cubans were shocked by what they called the "crazy" prices of foreignmade cars which have gone on sale for the first time since the 1959 revolution. The state has a monopoly on new cars and is marking up prices 400% or more. A Peugeot 508
costing £32,000 in the UK is listed at $262,000 (£159,000). State salaries average about $20 a month.
One disappointed buyer told reporters: "The prices are crazy. No Cuban who works for the state can buy at that price. They have zero chance of getting a
car." The government argues profits will be placed in a special fund to develop public transport.
The money is desperately needed, as there is a dire shortage of transport and what there is is often in a decrepit state. Until new regulations in 2011, people
could only sell cars built before the 1959 revolution.
For new cars, people needed a much-sought government permit – a privilege mainly bestowed on senior officials, top athletes and artists. The permits were often traded on the black market for large sums of cash.

NY to relax marijuana laws
Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo plans to relax new York State's marijuana laws to allow limited use by seriously ill patients – joining 20 other US states which have already gone down the same road. On January 1st, Colorado became the first US state to allow shops to sell cannabis for recreational purposes and Washington state is expected to allow the sale of marijuana later this year. The drug is still illegal under federal law. new York's new policy is expected to be far stricter than in California or Colorado, which had already loosened rules around the use of medical marijuana. But in new York, the drug will be made available in only 20 hospitals across the state for people with cancer, glaucoma or other serious diseases that meet standards to be set by the state department of health. Mr Cuomo is expected to make the change through administrative rather than legislative action.

Protests against plan to kill sharks in Perth
Thousands of people took part in protests around the country last weekend over a plan to kill large sharks by installing baited 72 hooks on drum lines one mile off Perth's popular beaches where there have been seven fatal shark attacks in three years.
The lines will be installed by January 10th, and commercial fishermen will be awarded contracts to maintain and patrol the lines. Any shark more than three metres long – which could include Great White, Tiger and Bull sharks – will be shot and disposed of. But protesters say a cull is not the answer, and will only damage the sea's delicate ecosystem. The policy was settled upon following the death of a surfer and father-of-two in november. Acting Premier Kim Hames insisted the plan would go ahead despite the protests, but protesters have vowed not to let up in their opposition to the plans and the Green Party says it is consulting its lawyers over the legality of the move.

'Whale' spotted on motorway
A giant sperm whale strapped to the back of a Dutch lorry in Lorraine, eastern France, has bemused motorists and prompted Twitter users to post pictures of the 55ft sea creature being towed along the motorway on new Year's eve. Twitter users claimed that moving whales on dry land is strictly regulated, and that the whale would be unlikely to survive such a journey, the Republicain Lorrain newspaper reported. However, the whale turned out to be a life-size fibreglass dummy built by a group of Belgian artists, who told the paper that the model was on its way to the netherlands from an exhibition in Spain. It had been touring europe as a way of raising awareness about the plight of sperm whales. "We're sorry it surprised people on the road. Usually we completely cover it over," they said.

Pope nearly tripled crowds in 2013
Pope Francis drew more than 6.6 million people to his audiences, Masses and other events in Vatican City during his first year in office, statistics covering the period from the Argentinean's election in March to the end of 2013 have shown. His predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, attracted just 2.3 million people for the whole of 2012.
Pope Francis, named Person of the Year by Time magazine, is the Roman Catholic Church's first Latin American leader. He is also the first Jesuit at the helm of the Church and has eschewed some of the more regal trappings of high office, made headlines by washing the feet of prisoners, and called for power to be devolved away from the Vatican. He has also adopted a markedly less formal tone than previous popes, underlining his reputation for simplicity and humility. He is expected to announce some major reforms in Church organisation for 2014.

Sochi security clampdown launched Russia has launched one of the biggest security operations in Olympic history a month before the start of the Winter Games in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. More than 30,000 police and interior ministry troops have been deployed and access to the area is limited to prevent an attack by Islamist militants from the restive North Caucasus region.
"Starting January 7th, all divisions responsible for ensuring the guests' security at the Games are being put on combat alert," Emergency Situations Minister Vladimir Puchkov said. "Every facility will be put under protection and a space-based monitoring system will be launched." Two security zones have also been established.
A "controlled zone" near Olympic venues will limit access to people with tickets and proof of identity while another "forbidden zone" will be in place in large areas around Sochi. Vehicles not registered locally and which do not have special accreditation will be banned from the city. The sale of firearms, explosives and ammunition will also be prohibited. Security fears have been heightened after two suicide bomb attacks killed 34 people in the southern city of Volgograd on December 29th and 30th.
As a result of the bombings, President
Vladimir Putin ordered further security measures and personally inspected Olympic sites.
Attacks by Islamists on Russian forces in Chechnya have spread violence across the North Caucasus, killing hundreds of people, among them members of the government and security services.
A new Russian law banning "homosexual propaganda" aimed at people under 18 had led some to call for the Games to be boycotted. However, President Putin has insisted gay and lesbian athletes will feel at ease.
350 Turkish police officers 'sacked' The Turkish government has sacked 350 police officers in the capital Ankara, following a corruption probe targeting people close to the government. Officials, mostly from outside the city, have been named to replace them. The latest round of police sackings and reassignments were carried out under a government decree published at midnight on
Monday. Those removed from their posts include chiefs of the financial crimes, anti-smuggling and organised crime units. Hundreds of police have been dismissed or reassigned across the country since last month's corruption investigation into alleged bribery involving public tenders. The Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the police and judiciary of a "dirty plot"
and has said he will not allow "political plotting".
Many believe the arrests and firings reflect a feud within Turkey's ruling AK Party between Mr Erdogan's backers, and supporters of Fethullah Gulen, an influential Islamic scholar living in self-imposed exile in the US. Members of his Hizmet movement hold influential positions in the police, the judiciary and the AK Party itself.

Britain endures worst Pensions will series of Atlantic rise, Cameron storms since 1991 tells elderly transport has been hit as people return home and to work after the holidays.
The people of Britain are looking forward to a break this week from the stormy weather that has battered the country over the festive period.
The storms that have blown in from the Atlantic have caused chaos with heavy rain falling on already saturated and sometimes flooded ground, high winds and high tides making the problems worse.
Weather forecasters say Britain has endured the worst series of winter
storms in more than 20 years and more could be on the way.
There have been many incidents but thankfully few lives have been lost, although a 47-year-old man did die in Oxford when his mobility scooter slipped from a footpath into a swollen river. The Thames barrier has been in operation to protect people along the river. Flood warnings remain with hundreds of properties and businesses affected by flooding, and

The good news is that flood defences appear to have worked well and it is clear that without the efforts of the Environment Agency the situation in Britain could have been far worse. Weather forecasters now predict a spell of calmer weather, although it is not known how long it will last.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has said a Conservative Government would continue to guarantee rises in Britain’s state pension for the elderly to match inflation – wage rises or 2.5 per cent, whichever is higher. He pledged to continue the arrangement for the life of the next Parliament, to 2020. The downside is that millions of people in their
30s and 40s will have to wait until they are 68 or 69 before they receive a state pension. Mr Cameron, who said the pledge was the first plank of the 2015 election manifesto, defended the long-term rise in the pension age. “People aren’t stupid – they know you can only pay a decent state pension if you take tough, difficult, long-term decisions,” he told the Sunday Times newspaper.
Looking good The economic good news continues in Britain with construction industry figures for the end of the year showing faster growth than for six years
previously. There has now been eight months of continuous growth and the sector is on course for further solid recovery this year.

The sales on the high street have produced winners and losers in the tradition of the Christmas pantomime with fashion chain Next eclipsing Marks and Spencer for the first time.
Next expects pre-tax profits for the year to be up 12.6 per cent. The store has been helped by its strong catalogue and on-line division.

Arsenal cling on to top position Arsenal clung precariously to top spot in English soccer’s Premier League over the festive period, but manager Arsene Wenger feels the club needs another striker to continue to challenge for the title – particularly now Theo Walcott has been ruled out for six months with a knee injury and requires surgery. With Manchester City and Chelsea both theoretically one game away from the top spot the Gunners cannot afford to slip and there are fears that Nicklas Bendtner’s ankle injury could keep him out for some time. First choice striker Olivier Giroud missed the 2-0 win over Cardiff on New Year’s Day with an ankle problem and Yaya Sanogo is recovering from a back injury. Arsenal remain in the FA Cup competition following a 2-0 home win over Tottenham on Saturday.

Barristers walk out Three quarters of England’s barristers walked out on Monday for the first time ever, warning that legal aid cuts of £220 million threatened criminal justice.
One barrister who was interviewed said that he would expect to get around £50 to interview someone who had been arrested and was claiming legal aid. Others have said that fees are often much higher for a whole host of services given by barristers under the legal aid scheme which was set up to ensure the same level of justice for all no matter what their income.
The Criminal Bar Association said the action would see their fees cut by up to 30% and reduce the representation available to defendants.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Justice said the measures were necessary to ensure legal aid remained sustainable. They added that they were responsible to the tax payer and had to make sure that they got value for money. There has been controversy surrounding the scheme for some time as several high earning celebrities have claimed their lawyers’ fees from it.
Speed limit to help air quality

Variable speed limits to aid traffic flow are widely used but the RAC said this was the first being used specifically to improve air quality.

Osbourne: More budget cuts needed George Osborne says there are £25 billion more cuts needed to balance the UK’s books and he indicated that much of the sum will come from the welfare budget. He said that more austerity lay ahead as “the job is not even half done “ yet and that a year of hard choices are ahead in order to ensure that the next generation does not have to foot the bill for spending now.
A couple of the savings he hinted at were stopping housing benefits for under 25s and restricting access to council housing to those earning over £65 thousand a year.
Ed Balls said that the winter allowance should be taken away from well off pensioners and that Labour’s answer to getting the country back on course is to get young people back in jobs. Pope stuns nuns Jihadist terrorist with surprise call arrested at airport Police said on Sunday that they had arrested a member of a jihadist group who had been wanted for months for participating in the “holy war” in Syria.
No-one answered the phone when Pope Francis made a surprise call to a convent of Carmelite nuns in Lucena, Córdoba, on New Year's Eve. “What can the nuns be doing that’s stopping them from answering?” the Pope said jokingly in the message he left on the answering machine – they were in fact praying. “This is Pope Francis, I wish to greet you this year end, I will see if I can call you later. May God bless you!” Sister Adriana, the prioress at the convent, told the radio network COPE: “When I finally got to the answering machine that morning, I literally wanted to die,” she said. “Our friendship goes back 15 years but I never thought the pope
would remember us.”
At around 7.15pm, Pope Francis called back. She asked for permission to put him on the speakerphone, "so we could all hear his voice”. “He told us never to lose hope because sadness leads to a lack of spirituality,” she explained. “He also
reminded us of the papal encyclical that states that the demon’s most sustainable food is man’s sadness.”
There are five nuns in the convent in Lucena; three of them are from Argentina and knew the Pope Bergoglio when he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
Judge is woman of the year In a survey, 46 per cent of the readers of the El Mundo newspaper voted for Judge Mercedes Ayala as the most important news item of last year.

The opposition is not just coming from
environmentalists, but from other sectors of society as well. Rafael de la Fuente, a retired former PP local councillor and manager of two of Marbella's best hotels, said. "Skyscrapers are dangerous. When I was younger I saw the way they ruined Torremolinos. It used to be the number one tourist destination in Spain: it took just six
years to destroy the place. People coming from northern Europe do not want that. Marbella is unique, and we cannot destroy it." Mayor Angeles Muñoz said recently the plans would not go ahead if there was a lot opposition. So for now, the Marbella skyline will remain unchanged.

The suspect was arrested at Málaga’s international airport after he disembarked from a plane arriving from Istanbul. Police said they believe Sadik was coming from Syria, where he travelled in May 2013 to join the training camps belonging to the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and

Interior Ministry sources said that Sadik formed part of several factions that fought in Syria and Iraq over the past months. They believe he was planning on recruiting new members.

A clean sweep!
Allan Davies in the guise of ‘Safe as Houses’, has brought a new service to his home and property business, though not a new skill. ‘I was out with friends last Christmas when one of them asked if I knew someone who could clean their chimney. It was something I hadn’t thought about even though back in Dorset I had trained to be a sweep as one of my more diverse occupations and had enjoyed it’. So after investing in modern traditional equipment, Allan decided to offer the service locally which most people thought lost or unnecessary. ‘Unfortunately most people don’t realise that keeping a chimney and flue clean reduces the obvious fire hazards associated with burning combustibles, or the problems of blockages caused by birds, soot, debris or Creosote. All these can increase the risk of carbon monoxide build up and can seriously reduce your fire’s efficiency.’
‘I’m amazed so many people do not know about damper and flue control settings which can decrease or be detrimental to things like fuel burn
rate, smoke blowback and heat. Some have never used their system to its full capacity.’
Cleaning a typical chimney or flue is done relatively quickly, cleanly and with no fuss, including checking the fire and outlet. ‘Modern day polypropylene brushes of different sizes and carbon fibre brass connection rods have replaced the wood and wires of old and are more effective and easier to use, this coupled with the use of a good vacuum and traditional drop cloths makes cleaning virtually dirt and dust free for the surrounding room’.
Allan has been amazed at the response from his adverts in ‘The News’. ‘It’s gone really well with calls from the campo to the coast, and being in Coin, I’m pretty central to everywhere, and prices are more reasonable than you think.’
Additionally Allan supplies a number of other services including tree surgery and other tasks associated with holiday /permanent home or property maintenance. Contact Allan on 672 137 547 or ‘e’ mail safeashouses2527@hotmail. com for a quote and further information on all his services.

Last year, there were a record number of illegal incursions into Gibraltar's waters – capping a 12 month period in which relations between The Rock and Spain reached FuengirolA Elderly enjoy Three Kings breakfast their lowest ebb since the times of General Francisco Franco. There were 466 incidents, almost double the number for 2012 and the worst year on record. This deliberate provocation has heightened fears of a serious accident, aggravating an alreadyrocky relationship between Gibraltar, the UK and Spain. An FCO spokesman said the incursions were "a misguided attempt to maintain and assert Spanish claims that the waters are Spanish", adding that "although unlawful Spanish incursions are a violation of sovereignty, they are not an armed attack and are not a threat to UK sovereignty. They do not weaken or undermine the legal basis for British sovereignty. Nor do they change the fact of UK and Gibraltar jurisdiction". Last November the Spanish Ambassador to London, Federico Trillo, was summoned to the Foreign Office to be told
“in no uncertain terms" that the British government would not stand for such "unlawful incursions". It was the third time that the ambassador had been summoned since the current government took over in December 2011.
Spanish foreign minister José Manuel García-Margallo said that the summoning of the ambassador had surprised him because Spain "scrupulously complies with EU law". David Lidington, minister for Europe, said Spain's unlawful incursions into UK territorial waters had increased from about five per month to about 40. Under the previous Socialist government, there were 23 incursions in 2011 and 67 in 2010. Foreign Secretary William Hague said last year that the incursions had been stepped up after Gibraltar
Some 350 pensioners enjoyed a Three Kings breakfast at the las Palmeras hotel, organised by the local council to show to show its appreciation of their "spirit of collaboration" in all the municipality's social projects.

created an artificial reef to encourage fish stocks, but the Spanish claimed it impinges on their fishing rights. The worst month was August when there were 68 illegal incursions, coinciding with a period of up to five-hour long delays at the border.
Both the UK and Gibraltar governments said the delays were orchestrated by Spain, to punish The Rock for the artificial reef. Hague said the measures were "disproportionate and obviously politically motivated, having been introduced immediately after the lawful creation
by the government of Gibraltar of an artificial reef in Gibraltar's waters", adding that "they are also unlawful under EU law." Tensions lulled over Christmas and the New Year, but it remains to be seen what the Spanish have in store for Gibraltar this year.

The year's top stories
U
nfortunately, I'm afraid Catalonia will have to head the list, unless regional premier Artur Mas (above) disappears off the scene. This man has a talent for grabbing headlines that no pop star or footballer can match. His latest trick was to write to all the heads of the EU countries asking for their support for the referendum he's called for November this year. Very tellingly, Angela Merkel, Francoise Hollande and David Cameron haven't deigned to reply, probably because they all have secession problems themselves – Bavaria, the French Basque Country and Scotland. I don't think Mas is stupid enough to expect a reply from them, but it was the gesture that counted because it made the headlines. I dread to think what he's going to do next. However, I'm seriously thinking of starting a campaign aimed at getting the national and international media to ignore him completely so that the Spanish government can get on with governing Spain. I shall consult my friend Martin Delfin about the best way of going about this. He's up there in Madrid playing with the big boys at El Pais newspaper, so I'm sure he'll come up with some good ideas.
E
ven more unfortunately, I think the monarchy is going to get even more of a battering this year. The judge investigating the king's son-in-law has summoned Princess Cristina to appear before him in March. I know the king didn't help his popularity ratings when it was discovered that he'd been shooting elephants in Uganda. However, I don't think it was the elephants that upset people so much as the fact that he was with a German woman who married a German count and wriggled her way into the aristocratic jet set. We all know that the
www.thenewsonline.es
king was a bit of a lad when he was young, but to find out that he was still at it at this late date came as a great disappointment to many of us. But the damage done by that revelation is nothing compared to the harm done by his son-in-law.
A
s a result, his popularity is at its lowest ever – around 48 per cent according to one recent poll – and the number of people who think he should abdicate is growing. On the other hand, an increasing number of people believe that Crown Prince Felipe can save the monarchy, which a majority in another poll see as a stabilising influence. Until recently nobody believed the king would opt for abdication but he just might do so, if that's the only way to save the monarchy. As a child, his father used him as a pawn to get Franco to reintroduce the monarchy. For many years, Juan Carlos himself had to endure being seen as nothing more than Franco's puppet, but he went on to play a crucial role in the transition from dictatorship to democracy, which would have been impossible without his active participation. He was possibly the most admired and loved king in the whole world – until the truth about his son-inlaw's shady dealings started surfacing. At this point one almost wishes Franco was still around – he would have put the knave up against a wall and shot him. As it is, we can only hope the judge sends him to jail because that would go a long way to restoring people's faith in the legal system and the monarchy.
T
he Barcenas case isn't going to go away in a hurry either. The Partido Popular's former treasurer will continue to dominate the headlines until he either dies of a heart attack – he was rushed to hospital over Christmas with what turned out to be indigestion or something like that – or is sentenced to a long term in jail. Either way, it would let the PP off the hook. Meanwhile, the corruption scandals in Andalusia will also divert attention and this, with the improving economic indicators, may make it a less stressful year for Mariano Rajoy. What I want to know is how does his hair stay so black while his beard keeps getting whiter (see below)? Perhaps he should stop dyeing his hair – or shave off his beard.

W
hile Princess Cristina may never see the inside of a courtroom, the entire scandal involving the Nóos Institute and her alleged role in helping her husband commit financial irregularities has no doubt permanently tarnished the royal household. Palma de Mallorca Judge José Castro has found substantial evidence to suspect the 48-year-old princess committed tax fraud and violated anti-money-laundering laws along with her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin. The entire case has been building for the past three years after anti-corruption prosecutors began looking into Urdangarin’s non-profit Nóos Institute, which he and his partner Diego Torres set up to organise special events and conferences for different regional governments.
S
ome of the government money they got may have gone to the royal son-in-law’s private businesses, including a real estate agency that Urdangarin and his wife owned. With his probable cause findings issued on Tuesday, Judge Castro has subpoenaed Princess Cristina to testify on March 8th. This is the second time the judge has tried to call in the king’s daughter. Last May, a higher judges panel ruled against him after anti-corruption prosecutors also advised Castro that there was not enough evidence to charge her. But Castro was allowed to continue to look into the princess’s tax records.
C
ristina Bourbon has two options: she can fight to quash the subpoena and raise the spectre of suspicion now surrounding the royal household or insist on appearing before the judge – if she has nothing to hide, as she and her husband insist – in a bold effort to try to contain the public sullying that has eroded the Spanish monarchy’s image. King Juan Carlos has done enough for his children and now it is time for at least one of them to step in and try to undo the dishonour.
I
Aborting the measure
t is difficult to believe that most women in the Partido Popular (PP) agree with what has to be the most backward reform that Spain has seen since democracy was restored. The dissidents are coming out in full force against the Justice minister’s abortion legislation, one that takes away the rights of women to decide when and under what circumstances they can acquire the procedure.
Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón wants to reintroduce many of the requisites of the 1985 law which legalised abortion for the first time in Spain but also one that placed many restrictions. He wants to abolish the reforms taken in 2010 by the Socialists, which allowed women to undergo the procedure on demand and without having to give health professionals any reason why they want an abortion up to the 14th week of pregnancy.
A
ccording to the reform that will go to Congress this month, the bill reinstates two compelling situations in which women can abort: if there is a health or psychological risk to the mother and in cases of rape. Women will no longer have the choice to decide if they want to keep their child if the foetus is damaged or if it is discovered that the child will be born with a serious birth defect. Gallardón said in an interview last month that he and wife would have a child even if they knew there was a chance that the infant would be malformed at birth.
I
n any case, it should be up to the woman and husband to decide whether they want to bring an infant into this world if they believe the child will later suffer physically and psychologically. And in the case of rape, there would have to be a police report and an okay by the doctor before the mother can have the abortion. But as the justice minister knows, there are many women who for numerous reasons never report rape to the authorities, not only in Spain but in many other countries.
J
osé Antonio Monago, the PP regional premier in Extremadura, has come out publicly against the reform and announced that he will voice his opposition during today’s national committee meeting of his party. His counterpart in Galicia has also called for a softening of the proposed law while the delegate in Madrid Cristina Cifuentes said she does not agree with many of its components. But there are others, such as Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, a young professional mother known to be a party moderate, who have not taken a position. The abortion reform has become a fiasco for the Rajoy government and looks like it is on the road to becoming a major flop. We can only hope.

It’s already that time of year to think about holidays
And over the next few weeks we’ll be giving you some ideas of where to go and what to visit while you’re there. As money is tight for a lot of us at the moment, we’re going to start with the UK and work our way around the world – as a lot of us have friends and relatives we can stay with, thereby saving money on hotel accommodation. If you travel from Malaga into Gatwick, you can hire a car from Victoria Car Hire there at very reasonable costs too, so London is going to be our destination – at least for the next few issues as there is so much to be seen there. As I am a Londoner myself, I know the city and surrounding areas very well. Transport links are excellent with a huge network of buses and of course “the Tube”, or underground trains, plus good overground rail and coach services to other parts of the country.
Greenwich
Let’s start in Greenwich. London, it is said by some, is at the heart of the world given that it lies on 0º longitude and Greenwich is the place where you can stand astride the meridian in the Old Royal Observatory courtyard, while the Airy Transit Instrument which defines it can be seen in the Meridian Building. Greenwich has long been associated with all things Naval for Britain – the National Maritime Museum was first formed in the 18th Century. The collections held in the two main buildings are of the finest in the world and include contemporary ship models, ships plans, oil paintings, prints and drawings, navigational and astronomical instruments, uniforms, weapons and relics, printed books, atlases and manuscripts. These two buildings stand at the bottom of the hill very near to the Thames while the Old Observatory stands proudly on the crest of the hill where you can enjoy a panoramic view over London. At sunset you will be able to watch as the newer glass clad buildings of London
appear to be on fire, such is the colour of the setting sun on them. The main East Wing building is devoted to the 19th and 20th centuries with displays on emigration, British Merchant shipping, Arctic exploration and the Royal Navy 1814 to 1914 plus some small displays covering the 1914 to 1918 and the 1939 to 1945 World Wars. The West Wing has galleries on both Cook and Nelson, as well as on 18th century maritime history and the Navigation room outlines the development of this science. New Neptune Hall, ,dominated by the paddle tug Reliant, contains displays on the development of the boat and steamship and leads onto the lower floor of technical galleries covering the building of wooden ships, the archaeology of water transport, yachting and “the way of the ship” – an audio-visual display on navigation, communications, anchors, rigging and masts, and ship handling relating to an early 19th century sailing warship. The Queen’s House, designed by Inigo Jones in 1616 and completed in 1635 forms the centrepiece of the main buildings. It is linked by colonnades to the East and West Wings and is devoted to the 16th and 17th centuries. Exhibits here include ship models, engraved glass and a fine selection of largely 17th century pictures. In the Old Royal Observatory, which includes the Museum’s Planetarium, are many displays illustrating – its history with special emphasis on nautical astronomy, timekeeping and Greenwich Mean Time. The Greenwich Planetarium seats 48 people and is used mainly for educational purposes but is open to the public on certain days throughout the school holidays with some demonstrations being given on Saturdays. For further information on this area call +44 208 858 4422.
To get there, I’ve always thought it best to catch a water taxi at Westminster, Tower or Charing Cross Piers. It takes about an hour to reach Greenwich but make sure you check before leaving the boat what time the last one back sails! You can also go one way by water taxi and the other by bus or train. The choice is entirely yours. The journey along the river is quite often accompanied by extremely interesting commentaries made by the boats’ captains who have travelled the river for years. You will also learn about many of the buildings and wharfs along the way. However, if you don’t fancy this mode of transport there is a half hourly train service from Charing Cross and Cannon Street to Maze Hill station which takes about 20 minutes. Bus numbers 177, 180, 185 and 188 all pass the main buildings of the museum and numbers 53, 54 and 75 cross Blackheath that is close to the Old Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park. Journey times by bus depend on traffic and where you get on, of course! If you have seen all you wanted to see at the museum and still have time on your hands, there is a great local food market just across the road where you can get very good coffee (or tea if you’re a true old school Londoner) plus lots of British and ethnic foods to try out at prices that won’t break the bank. We have always had lunch or a mid-morning snack here so I have no idea what time they close – check before you enter the museum. You can also wander under the Thames at this point via the tunnel.
The Cutty Sark
The other main attraction at Greenwich is the Cutty Sark. Probably the most famous clipper ship in the world, she was launched on the Clyde in 1869 with the intention of being the
fastest ship in the China tea trade where there was much rivalry to bring home from China the first of the new season’s tea – a bit like today’s annual Beaujolais Nouveau wine race. The Suez Canal was opened the same year the Cutty Sark was built and steamers soon captured the tea trade. The Cutty Sark then moved on to the Australian wool trade where she carried bales of wool round Cape Horn and back to Britain. The sailors slept on bare wooden bunks with straw mattresses known as “donkeys’ breakfasts”. The crew – around 28 and mostly young men – handled the 10 miles of hemp and manila ropes and the 32,000 square feet of canvas sails it took to sail her. Imagine doing that in the teeth of a gale as she rounded the infamous Cape Horn where many ships came to grief! When weather was good, crews and officers worked a 12 hour shift, seven days a week. In bad weather there would be many more hours worked by everyone on board in highly dangerous conditions, and all for a few pounds a month, if they were lucky. Meals for officers and crew were cooked on the coal-fired range in the galley with crew eating their meals in the living quarters and officers in the saloon at the aft of the ship. In the lower hold you can see figureheads from the Long John Silver collection – the only remaining relics of many
fine sailing ships. The construction of the Cutty Sark is of iron beams and frames bolted to the wooden decks and sides. Called ‘composite construction’ this method of ship building was used for a short time in the midnineteenth century before ships’ hulls were built entirely of iron and later of steel. Below the water line the planking is of rock-elm and above it of teak from five to six inches thick. Outside the planking is sheathed in yellow metal to prevent fouling and attack by wood borers such as the ship worm. You can also note the Star of India badge on her stern and the motto: “Where there’s a will there’s a way” – a play on the name of the ship’s first owner, “White Hat Willis”. The word “Cutty Sark” meant a short chemise (or slip) and you can see the figurehead dressed in one. The Cutty Sark is one of very few survivors of the thousands of sailing ships of her time which carried the trade of Britain worldwide and is a memorial to them all. Brought to Greenwich in 1954 and restored by the Cutty Sark Society, she attracts around half a million visitors a year. A short history of the Cutty Sark: Built at Dumbarton in 1869 at a cost of 16,150 pounds her overall length is 280ft (85.4 metres). Her length between perpendiculars is 212.5ft (64.8 metres) with a beam of 36ft (11 metres) and her
depth (moulded) is 22.5 ft (6.7 metres). Her gross tonnage is 963 tons (978.5 tonnes), her net tonnage is 921 tons (937 tonnes) and her displacement at 20ft draught is 2,100 tons (2133.7 tonnes). The Cutty Sark’s sail area is 32,000 square feet (2976 sq m). Her loaded draught is 21ft (6.4 metres). She sailed in the China tea trade from 1870 to 1877 and her fastest journey to England was 107 days in 1871.She sailed in the Australia wool trade from 1883 until 1895 with the fastest voyage to England taking her 72 days in 1885. In 1895 she was sold to Portuguese owners who re-named her Ferreira. She was re-rigged as a barquentine in 1917 and in 1922 was bought by Captain and Mrs. Dowman who re-rigged her once again as a ship. She was given to HMS Worcester in 1938 as a training ship and in 1953 was given to the Cutty Sark Society. She was opened to the public by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1957. In 1975 The Maritime trust that was founded in 1970 by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh to ‘restore and put on display ships and equipment of interest and importance in the technical, commercial and military history of this country’ merged with the Cutty Sark Society. by Kym Wickham

Swim success RAFA Spain Branches - Think Friendship Weekend - freely February 14th to 16th Friday What a fantastic afternoon everyone had on New Year’s day at Carvajal for the sponsored swim, which is now into year 8 and what a whopper it turned out to be … Over 320 people turned out for this traditional afternoon and I would like to thank each and every one of those who took part and also Global Radio for their live broadcast, the team from In the Doghouse, the safety divers, raffle ticket sellers and Mick Cruise ticket seller. The afternoon brought 19 swimmers with over €3,500 in sponsorship, the raffle as always was well supported to the tune of over €1.300, the auction, BBQ and Hilary’s cakes and preserves all raised
much needed funds. Many thanks must go to all who supplied raffle and auction prizes –to make 66 raffle prizes offered on the day and 21 auction prizes which, in the present economic climate, was absolutely fantastic. The grand total raised from the afternoon was €7,044. So for a small animal charity, I can’t thank everyone enough for their support. Written by Stacey for 4 Paws Adoptions,

The Royal Air Forces Association, RAFA, is represented in Spain by three branches. These are Costa del Sol (formerly Benalmádena Branch and now incorporating Gibraltar), Costa Blanca, and North Costa Blanca.
Between them, these branches provide welfare assistance to a considerable number of clients – far more than most other military-based charities. They provide assistance and help in areas where others cannot. All in all, RAFA provide a valuable service to many of the ex-RAF members, their families and dependents. The combined financial assistance given is considerable. The Costa del Sol Branch alone disperses over 40,000€ each year and has reached over 60,000€ at its peak.
However, welfare is not all they provide. The motto is "Friendship – Help – Support". In order to be able to provide the help and support under the welfare banner, it is essential that the branches maintain the "friendship" element. This is done by each branch having a programme of social events and formal gatherings.
With this in mind, the Costa del Sol Branch decided to arrange a weekend event and invite the other two branches to join them. This has now been done and the weekend the 14th to 16th February 2014 has been booked at Hotel Tamisa Golf.
The other branches have responded well and the hotel is now fully booked. Bookings are being accepted for overflow accommodation. The hotel has given RAFA a very competitive rate for accommodation, and also for the evening functions.
The weekend will start with arrivals on Friday, an
informal reception for the guests, followed by a Valentine’s Ball on Friday and a Grand Gala Celebration on Saturday. The Saturday function will also include the 10th Anniversary of the formation of the Costa Blanca Branch.
Both evening events are open to everyone and each will cost just €30 per person including a reception, dinner with wine etc, and full entertainment.
This is the first time, outside European Area and Annual Conferences, that the Spain branches have got together for purely social reasons and
every effort is being made to make it a success.
This is also an opportunity for the general public to join in the fun and possibly get an understanding of RAFA. The main thing though is "friendship", so they would be delighted to see a "sold out" notice for the evening events, and ask everyone to help the weekend go with a swing. Full details and tickets can be obtained from the Hon. Secretary, Ron Sibbett, on 607 586 894. Please visit the website, www.rafacostadelsol.co.uk
The next meeting of the Costa del Sol Freethinkers will be this Friday, 10th January 2014 at 6.30 pm in the Manila Bar, Los Boliches. Although it has not yet been decided, the subject to be discussed is likely to be on the subjects of either "What it is to be a Freethinkers" or "Decriminalisation of Drugs". The group is made up of “A group for freethinkers, humanists, rationalists, secularists, atheists, agnostic, skeptics, and the like in the Costa del Sol, Spain,” and you can find out more about them by visiting their Facebook Group at www.facebook.com/groups/ costadelsolfreethinkers/

Contact with asbestos causing problems now? - It may not too late to claim My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor based in Chester, UK, specialising in claims for asbestos-related diseases. I have been dealing with these claims for over 25 years and I aim to provide a professional but personal service.
As people get older, it is not unusual for breathing problems to start, or to become worse. With investigations problems with shortness of breath are sometimes attributed to exposure to asbestos. An X-ray can show whether lung damage is the result of smoking or asbestos: asbestosis, diffuse pleural thickening and mesothelioma – a cancer that attacks the protective lining of the lungs – are very serious illnesses that can be caused by contact with
asbestos.
Unfortunately, it is not only workmen who have used asbestos directly who develop these diseases but also people working in their vicinity or even laundering their work clothes.
If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with an asbestos-related condition or has breathing problems and has come into contact with asbestos in the UK please get in touch. You may be entitled to claim damages or benefits in the UK and I can help on a nowin-no-fee basis. I am happy to talk to
anyone free of charge about their individual situation to see if a claim for damages is possible. I often visit clients in Spain.

PAD’s cold swim to lots of money
On a beautifully sunny New Year’s Day, a number of total lunatics braved a just-off-freezing cold sea to raise money for the animal charity PAD.
Meeting at the Gun Pub on the Paseo Maritimo, Fuengirola at 1pm, and after a cup of tea and a bacon sarnie from the BBQ, off into the waves they went. Some necks disappeared into shoulders as the cold hit them, others took a running jump and dive!
There were people in pyjamas, Speedos, swimsuits, bikinis and long shorts – regular
holidaymaker Ross Skea from Aberdeen even came dressed as Rod Stewart and later won a bottle of champagne for raising the most sponsorship money at €371. Every single one of them was a lot braver than I was – I stood safely on the shore taking photos of this now annual event. Lisa from PAD had her son Jay go in with her this year. Lisa was the one wearing her jim-jams (pictured above, centre with Jay) and, as she found it a bit difficult getting out of the sea because of the wet weight of them last year, poor Jay
was roped in to help her reach dry land this year. Others taking part included Ross Skea’s son Keir, Anthony, Jurgen, Natalie and Rebecca, Tony, Cristian, Rita Welling and Gaby Wheeler, Derek Robinson, Marie and Yanek Thompson and, last but not least, Burk, Pat and Bronwyn Lehman. All these people, and any that I didn’t manage to get the names of (some made a hasty retreat for a toddy afterwards), deserve not just a mention but a medal for braving the briney! The auction with 11 lots including a bottle of

champagne that went for €20, a hamper of wine and chocs, an antique print of Norfolk roadways, an embroidered shawl and various meals for two all raised a grand total of €239.
This was followed by the raffle, again with many good prizes, that raised another €300+.
At time of going to press Lisa has informed us that the event has so far, including auction, raffle and sponsorship, raised a kmuch needed €1,700. by Kym Wickham

No room at the Inn
'Twas the week before Christmas and the inn (aka the SOS animal refuge) was full.
So it was a shock to arrive at the La Trocha Sunday market in Coin to discover a plastic box of five babies (commonly referred to as puppies ) on our market stall site. They didn't have a blanket never mind swaddling clothes! Thankfully Jan from AID called on her foster network to get the pups into a warm home. The day was completed by the discovery later of a cat travel box, dropped off without a word, containing more puppies (pictured).
We don't have a stable but our young volunteers created a puppy corner in their living quarters and

Ever wanted to sing but not known where to start? Did you sing at school and have now lost confidence? Or do you want a change from Karaoke but are not sure how to go about it? Well, help is at hand, because The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) is offering two ‘SING HARMONY IN A DAY’ courses on the Costa del Sol and the Costa Tropical. The first of these will be at Lux Mundi, Fuengirola on Saturday, 22nd February and the second will be at the Hotel Arrayanes, Paseo Cotobro 5, Almuñecar on Sunday, 23rd February.
You will benefit from the invaluable experience of Musical Director and SABS President, Gail Grainger, backed up by members of an a cappella harmony quartet: Chardonnay. You will learn various techniques during the day which will help you to improve your singing. "This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to improve the quality of their singing voice and to learn about singing four part harmony", comments Gail. “Those with lower voices are particularly welcome as, in our experience, they have often been told in the past that they can't sing, which is usually far from the truth.”
“Throughout the day we will learn a new song together and in the evening we will perform live in front of friends and family. This method of learning has proved to be very popular in the UK and we are expecting an enthusiastic response.”
There are only 50 places available on each course, so make sure that you contact SABS soon to secure your place:

On the first and third Saturday of every month there is a new “rastro” being held at Casa de Pepe Bravo in the whitewashed village of Alozaina, about 40 minutes from Marbella. Casa Pepe Bravo takes in the socially unfortunate, helps them, and teaches them the crafts and skills needed to work productively. The centre is a huge old, restored Andalucian home with facilities such as : an arts and crafts workshop; a carpentry workshop; a pottery shop; an industrial kitchen, where artesanal olive oil, honey and jams are made; and an artesanal museum. The shop, called Arte de Mis Manos (“My Handmade Art”), sells basically all of the products produced in the centre. www.dafacto.com/2012/ 01/08/visit-casa-de-pepebravo-in-alozaina-spain/

video games. His comic irreverence gave Punch magazine its title and the term ‘pleased as Punch’ is derived from this gleeful character. Bertie Pearce presents his lecture on Punch and Judy from its earliest origins. The lectures are free to DFAS members. Visitors are welcome and pay 10€ at the door.
An extra lecture has been arranged for Tuesday 14th January 2014 at 10.30, The Danish Club, Urb. Haza del Algorrobo, Ctra. de Mijas km 2.2. Entitled “Now you see it, now you don’t – the Art of Deception: Optical Illusion, Camouflage and Trompe d’Oeil.” This is an in-depth look at the profound mystery of perception. There is an eternal fascination with the unfathomable, the weird ambiguous state of seeing things which are not there – yet are there. In the same way as a magic trick surprises and delights us there is a primal enjoyment in being deceived by optical illusions, used in art since Roman times. The lecture includes Trompe L’Oeil and the closely related Anamorphic art. From the 16th to the 19th century anamorphosis became extremely popular and supplied an ideal means of camouflaging dangerous political statements, heretical ideas and even erotic pictures. It was later revitalised by Salvador
Dali who was always fascinated by optical tricks and hidden imagery. The lecture also covers Ambiguous Imagery as used by the Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte and in the 1960s Op Art, the movement of abstract painters led by Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley. Cost to members of NADFAS/DFAS €8, visitors and guests €10. Contact Maureen Davies 952 590 550 www.costadelsoldfas.com

The SecreT Life of WaLTer MiTTy Directed by Ben Stiller Starring: Ben Stiller, Sean Pean, Kirsten Wiig
In the radical reworking Stiller works in the film negative archive of Life magazine, where he toils away as a glorified filing clerk. With not much to occupy his mind he dreams of a better life – one in which he can rescue the woman of his dreams from a burning building and stand up to his boss.
It turns out that the magazine is about to close – and the editor wants to
Director: Stuart Blumberg Starring: Mark Ruffalo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins
A trio of would-be friends meet and compare notes after attending a 12-step programme for sex addiction. Mike, Phoebe, and Adam are addicts struggling with their promiscuity and desire for all-things sexual. These three also befriend a doctor suffering from the same problems that are ruining his medical career. Adam begins a hopeful relationship with Phoebe;
This is the first time Stiller has taken up the director’s role since Tropic Thunder five years ago, and as the key character in a James Thurber story first brought to the big screen more than 65 years ago with Danny Kaye in the lead role, he has set himself the task of bringing something fresh to this remake of a tale about an idle daydream played out for real. Kaye played Mitty as a proof reader of pulp fiction novels.

Directors: Jacob Kornbluth Starring: Robert Reich use an iconic photograph taken by the famous photographer Sean O’Connell (Sean Penn) for the last ever cover. But the negative has gone missing, and it’s Walter’s job to find it.
Cue a roller-coaster road-trip search for the elusive O’Connell in which Walter discovers himself ... can he become the man he dreamed of?
And will the lovely Cheryl (Wiig) become a part of his life.
The critics reckon that Stiller has taken on some of director Wes Anderson’s style of low-key comic quirkiness a la The Royal Tenenbaums (Stiller was one of the stars) so don’t expect lots of laugh-outloud gags – more a wryly amusing tale with some big laughs along the way.

Tasks and chores will seem easier this week so make the most of this energy to get tedious tasks done. Allow relationships to take their natural course and go with the flow, however unusual it all may seem. Your romantic life can be electrifying and you will find collaboration with a loved one effortless. A commitment from you may be forthcoming as you will be looking at making long-term plans. If you have feelings of doubt building up then you need to ask yourself why? There is a fabulous opportunity for you to empower yourself and to deepen and heal your relationships; however, you may sabotage this influence through feelings of uncertainty. With a carefree attitude you can handle most things that come your way and there is an indicator that happiness, pleasure and joy are just around the corner. Many things have fallen by the wayside for you lately but now is the moment when you can show that you are serious about your ultimate place on the path. Spending time on the things that matter to you will allow others to see where your real passions lie. It may mean that you will be moving in a different direction from others, so the key is not to turn a blind eye to the struggles they face and not to lose sight of your own needs and desires. There is growth to be found this week within all of your committed relationships and unresolved pieces of the past will give you clues on how to progress. Make sure you are direct and to the point and do not side step issues as you will feel stronger and free for doing so. Inner talents are waking up and your awareness and observations are spot on.
This is a time to review what it is you really want and need. All that was broken in the past can be mended and you are able to gain more balance and meaning in your life. Emotionally this can feel like an upheaval as your thoughts align with your feelings. You may want to hibernate for a while until the stormy weather has passed; however, the universe is asking you to take a long hard look as you reach a turning point in your life.
You do not want to have to rely on others like you have in the past and one focus of the moment is to put in place schemes that will enable you to be independent. The more you get done this week the more rewards you will find. You could find yourself becoming quite an organiser and being the one that comes up with the positive ideas for change.
It takes a lot for you to reach the end of your tether but this week you have arrived at the limit of your tolerance levels with one particular person or situation. At the moment with the help of Mars you have immense courage and spirit to make your point heard and others will know that you mean business; it is through this new approach that many opportunities can come September 23rd - your way. Putting into place routine and incorporating activities that you enjoy, so that you are able to strike a better balance, is a focus for you right now. Your creativity and ideas are ready to be set into motion and you will find yourself being swept along so speedily that little things can turn into major accomplishments.
There may be something that you do not really want to do and this is making you hesitate in an area in which you are normally enthusiastic; in reality you are aware that you have to go through this in order to receive your remuneration. The key is to relax and keep a cool head – no-one expects you to know all the answers all of the time.
You have the motivation and inherent strength and determination to rise above your current conditions and limitations. This is an empowering week for you where new beginnings are ready to emerge as you release an emotional restriction that has held you back. Some relationships may still have a hold over you but it is easier to climb above the chaos.
Any possibility is within your grasp, all that went unrewarded in the past is now coming your way. If you felt like you had been forgotten, now you know that you are remembered and feel appreciated. There has been a lot that you have felt has been out of your control and any feelings of regret are asking to be laid to rest. Your passions are high and you may feel unusually spontaneous.
It is up to you to initiate the new action that you know needs to take place, perhaps you have resisted something for a while and now it is likely that you will be pushed into making a change. If you trust in taking action on the things that you are clear about then leave the outcome to reveal itself. Intense passion is welling up from within as your fire is being fuelled, it is going to get hot.
1. For the marinade: Rinse and drain the prawns. Pat them dry and put into a nonreactive bowl. Add the yogurt, chillies and ½ teaspoon of salt. Mix well, cover and marinate overnight in the fridge. 2. For the curry: Pour the oil into a karhai, wok or heavy-based pan about 23cm in diameter and set it over a medium heat. 3. Spoon in the cumin seeds, swirl and brown for 10 seconds. Add the onions and sauté for about 10 minutes, or until brown all over. 4. Add the garlic, reduce the heat to low and stir and fry for 2 minutes. Mix in the turmeric and stir for 1 minute.
5. Add the green chillies, increase the heat to medium and stir for 1 minute. Mix in 1½ teaspoons of the garam masala and stir for 1 minute. 6. Add ¼ teaspoon of salt, all of the tomatoes and chilli flakes. Cook for 2 minutes, then add 120ml boiling water. Combine to make a thick sauce. 7. Simmer for 3 minutes, then add another ¼ teaspoon of salt. Stir in the prawns and their marinade and cook over a medium heat until they are just opaque and cooked through. 8. Sprinkle the remaining garam masala over the top and stir. Fold in the chopped coriander and serve with rice and naan.
ink Skype Hacked by Geek Syrian Electronic Army (SEA).
The social media platforms of Skype have been hacked by a group claiming to be the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA). The group posted antisurveillance messages, including a message telling people not to use email services of Microsoft, the owner of Skype. It claimed "they are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments". The hack comes after recent revelations about surveillance programmes being run by US intelligence agencies. "Don't use Microsoft emails (Hotmail, Outlook). They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments," the hackers posted on Skype's Twitter account and its blog. The post has since been removed. Skype acknowledged that it had been hacked but said that "no user information was compromised". The Syrian Electronic Army (SEA), which says it supports President Bashar al-Assad, has been behind recent hack attacks
on the New York Times and Twitter. The SEA has also targeted various other media companies, including the BBC, CNN and the Guardian.
Surveillance concerns Last year, whistle-blower Edward Snowden leaked documents which detailed the extent of surveillance programmes carried out by the US National Security Agency (NSA). According to the documents, the agencies had "backdoor" access to the servers of nine major technology companies including Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube and Apple. All the companies named have denied their involvement. In Microsoft's case, the Guardian newspaper claimed the documents showed that the NSA had access to most of Microsoft's flagship products including Hotmail, Outlook.com, Skydrive and Skype. The NSA reportedly said in the documents that it had improved its oversight of Skype so much
that it could now collect three times as many calls from the service than before. Even before Skype was bought by Microsoft it was providing information on some of its users through the surveillance programme known as Prism, the report had claimed. Since the revelations, Microsoft has teamed up with seven other leading technology firms to form an alliance called Reform Government Surveillance group. The group which includes Google, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, AOL, LinkedIn, and Yahoo, has called for "wide-scale changes" to US government surveillance. It has written a letter to the US President and Congress arguing that current surveillance practice "undermines the freedom" of people.

Dear Annie,
No matter how oily and hot skin feels, it needs a balanced, vitamin A-based moisturiser to prevent dehydration and poor skin nutrition in the long run. There's also no leaving home without sun block, even at this time of year.
Whenever you are outside, UV rays destroy the vitamins and antioxidants in your skin, resulting in visible ageing and skin degeneration. Pollution, emotional stress, social and work stress, poor diet, smoking and drinking alcohol all add to the problem.

Altering diet may ease asthma symptoms A high-fibre diet of fruits, vegetables and wholegrains might be an unlikely treatment for asthma, researchers at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland have said, after their tests on mice showed that a high-fibre diet could reduce inflammation in the lungs.
The extra fibre changed the nutrients being absorbed from the gut, which in turn altered the immune system. The researchers said the shift to processed foods may explain why more people
are developing asthma.
They said: "In recent decades, there has been a well-documented increase in the incidence of allergic asthma in developed countries and coincident with this increase have been changes in diet, including reduced consumption of fibre."
They noted that some of the differences caused by high-fibre diets have already been observed in people by comparing diets in Europe and Burkina Faso.
Reasons for keeping New Year resolutions Alcohol, junk food, smoking and caffeine are high on people's New Year resolutions lists. Alcohol is the best thing to give up, according to the experts.
The liver, responsible for detoxifying alcohol, is about the only organ capable of regenerating itself in weeks. A regular social drinker who goes on the wagon will lose a significant proportion of the fat that has built up on their liver within a month. But for a heavy drinker with more serious liver damage, such as fibrosis – where the liver is scarred – a month will not see the liver go back to normal. The pancreas, brain and heart are all negatively affected by heavy drinking. But none
has the regenerative powers of the liver. To complicate things, there is evidence suggesting that low alcohol consumption is better than no alcohol to avoid heart disease.
As for smoking, as soon as you stop you cut the risk of a heart attack by about a quarter. The halflife of nicotine is two hours – within 24 hours you can no longer detect it in the body. Within a few days, hands and feet warm up because nicotine constricts capillaries in the extremities, the smoker's tremor goes, the sense of smell returns and breathing improves.
By the end of the month you will be less stressed and more stable – there are no more highs and
lows based on nicotine withdrawal symptoms. And your skin will look five to 10 years younger. As for dieting, you've either got to do it longterm or not at all, the experts say – a more balanced diet is better than "all or nothing". Between 7% and 9% of all mortality is to do with not eating enough fruit and vegetables. Giving up white bread, white rice and non-wholemeal pasta – as well as the biscuits and cakes – makes sense, but leave in the porridge, cereals and wholemeal bread –- otherwise you'll miss out on B vitamins, zinc and iron.
As for caffeine, giving up tea and coffee for a
month will show you how dependent you are, the experts say. Regular tea and coffee-drinkers are dependent with no net benefits.
Most experts agree that a month is long enough to overcome caffeine withdrawal symptoms. But in the first few days, you may have a headaches and feel drowsy at times, but by the end of the month you will probably feel more balanced, sleep better and feel less jittery. But this is a lifestyle choice not a health decision because there's no evidence to show that caffeine is bad for you. Some research even suggests it may guard against Alzheimer’s disease.

No-one yet knows if the people the event is honouring will even be there
But at least two icons of the 80s will be... … coming together for the first time in seven years, plus a host of other stars Eurythmics stars Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart are confirmed as performing as a duo at a special Beatles tribute event, The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute To The Beatles, being organised by The Recording Academy to be aired on February 9th.
The event marks exactly 50 years since The Beatles’ debut appearance in America on the Ed Sullivan Show when an estimated 73 million people tuned in. The
couple
have
not
performed as a duo for seven years, but will come together with a host of other stars including Alicia Keys and John Legend (performing a duet of Let It Be) and John Mayer and Keith Urban who will perform Don’t Let Me Down, plus Maroon 5 with more artistes expected to be confirmed nearer the time of the event. It has not yet been confirmed whether or not Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr will make an appearance. Eurythmics, famous for Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This, sold millions of albums but have not
performed together since 2006.
In 2005 they got together to release a single, I’ve Got A Life, that was part of a compilation album and in the late 1990s recorded their ninth album.
"They really did change people's lives, so what I'm hoping this show ... gets across is the message that occasionally in history we are touched by certain artists who have a profound effect on us beyond just the music that they make," Grammy’s producer Ken Ehrlich said of The Beatles.

brother Don, who survives him, had a string of hits including “Bye Bye Love”, “Wake Up Little Suzie,” “All I Have To Do Is Dream”, “Cathy’s Clown” and “Let It Be Me”. The boys were the children of Midwestern country singers Ike and Margaret Everly and performed on family radio shows but, in their teenage years, they moved to Nashville, Tennessee where they signed their first record deal in 1957. Onstage they were in perfect harmony but the toll of stardom soon put cracks in their off-stage relationship and in 1973 they broke up very publicly in the middle of a performance in southern California. They did not perform again together until 1983, when they played at London's Royal Albert Hall. In November 2013, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and jazz singer Norah Jones released an Everly Brothers tribute album, titled "Foreverly." The Times said the funeral service would be private.

The return of the singing contest in which the emphasis is on vocals rather than looks. Pop princess Kylie Minogue and Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson are the new coaches, alongside old hands Tom Jones and Will.i.am, while Big Brother's Emma Willis and JLS's Marvin Humes (pictured) take over as hosts, who in the early rounds are on hand to console and congratulate the hopefuls backstage. It would appear that someone received a new toy for Christmas. La Carreta in Coin is mainly classed as a “Reserva” which means, in effect, that the birds and animals as well as people should be free to live in the area in peace. However, since Christmas on weekends and the Three Kings’ bank holiday, someone has been near the river shooting at anything and everything that moves from around 8:30am. The shooting also takes place very near to people’s houses and in the past when I have challenged various huntsmen I have been met with a sneer and backs turned until I have threatened to call the Guardia Civil at which point they generally leg it to pastures new. This new shooter hides in the canes if he sees someone coming so obviously knows that he’s not supposed to be there
Coin
I was told that it is illegal to shoot within 100 metres of residential dwellings and this person is well within that range. There used to be signs up saying that they couldn’t hunt there but they seem to have been taken down. Many people go walking in this area with children and/or dogs – indeed Coin council have just put up new signs indicating walking routes, so the whole idea of someone being down there with a gun is worrying. A small child or dog rustling around could easily be shot. What can we do about this situation as nobody seems to be complaining to the authorities?
Editor says: See if you can find the vehicle this person is travelling to the area in and take a photo, then contact the Guardia Civil . Try calling them from your mobile, tell them where you

It was too late to write to you last week to tell you what a fabulous New Year’s afternoon I had. I saw your article in The News about the people from one of the animal charities, PAD, who were going to brave the cold water to have a New Year’s swim to raise money so I thought I’d pop along and have a look. I am so glad I did. I

are, and make sure they can hear the shots down the phone! That might do it. I actually live in this area and it’s been driving me bonkers when I’m out with my dogs wondering if some idiot actually knows what he’s doing and not just taking pot shots at anything that moves, as has happened in the past. A few years ago I was trimming the trees down my driveway when there was an enormous bang and I got a load of shot raining down on my head, luckily not doing any damage. I chased the B along the lane where he jumped in his car and sped off so, maybe that’s the answer – but I suspect you’d probably get done for assault or something. A friend of mine in Scotland goes in for whacking dustbin lids together to make sure all their local animals go to ground but I’m not sure the racket makes her popular with her neighbours!
Las Chapas
thought there’d maybe be one or two of them brave enough to go in but there were lots of people, male and female, young and old who took part. Some ran in while others walked in and there was every garment from Speedos to swimsuits and from bikinis to long shorts and even one lady in her pyjamas. What a mad lot, but what
fun they all seemed to have and those who had done it last year told me that the sea wasn’t as cold! I certainly wasn’t brave enough but, who knows... maybe next year! Editor says: They made quite an amount in sponsorship too. Have a look at our report on the event on the Community News pages.
Jack Griggs It's hard to believe what people will do isn't it? You might like to quote me in the next issue saying that we travel a fair distance to provide the English Speaking community with copies of TheNews, and this week some inconsiderate and lazy idiot has deprived Pizarra and Alora of their copies by stealing five packs from the pick up point in Cartama Estacion. The garage staff said that an "Englishman" had taken them all, including the opened pack always left for the local people of Cartama Estacion. If someone wants a pack or so of papers then they only need to ring up and arrangements will be made....don't just nick them!
Pizarra
Editor says: Quite so Jack! I left the bundles quite early in the morning and Jack picks them up within about half an hour so someone must have watched them being delivered. Jack delivers them for us to Pizarra and Alora out of the kindness of his heart – and it costs him money for petrol so this is really inconsiderate. This happens from time to time unfortunately and I managed to get at least some more to Jack that same day but, what a pain it is when this takes place. As he says, if you want them, ask for them, and we’ll see what we can do – there’s no need to nick them!

Binocular Astronomy U
I’m always being asked by enthusiastic astronomers, ‘What sort of telescope should I get?’ nless you’re serious about taking up the hobby then my advice would be to get a pair of binoculars instead. Telescopes are difficult to use, take a long time to set up and the views are almost always disappointing. Apart from the Moon, the planets and a few star clusters people are always deflated when they look through a telescope. The beautiful full-colour pictures that you see in books and on TV are usually taken with the Hubble Space Telescope and have been photographically enhanced. What you will see through an amateur telescope is usually little more than a fuzzy blob. telescope costing €100 will be a ‘toy’ telescope but for €100 you could buy a really good pair of binoculars. Binoculars are easier to use, are portable and can be used for looking at other things as well as the night sky. And what you can see through them is almost as rewarding. ike a telescope, binoculars are able to gather more light and so make faint objects appear brighter. They won’t have the same magnifying power as a telescope but they can give quite satisfactory views of certain objects. hen buying binoculars you’ll see two sets of numbers 10X50 for example. This means that they have 10 times magnification with a 50mm diameter lens. This size is ideal for astronomy. The small ‘pocket size’ binoculars usually 8X21 are not really suitable as they only magnify eight times and the main objective lens is only 21mm in diameter and so won’t collect enough light to be of much benefit. Larger binoculars e.g. 15X70 magnify 15 times and have a 70mm main objective lens but these will usually require some sort of support or tripod to hold them steady as they are too heavy to hold comfortably. rmed with your 10X50 binoculars, there are several objects in the sky at the moment that will give rewarding views. ook toward the east shortly after sunset and you will spot a very bright yellow coloured ‘star’, it is so bright you can hardly miss it. This is the planet Jupiter and this week Jupiter comes its closest to the Earth for the year. Hold your binoculars very steady and make sure they are focused correctly giving a pinpoint sharp image and Jupiter will appear as a small

round disc. Try to spot the four largest moons Callisto, Io, Ganymede and Europa appearing as four tiny points of light in line with Jupiter’s equator. Make a note of their position and then have another look the next night and be amazed at how they have moved! If you follow them over a period of time then you’ll see them literally whizzing around the huge planet. ook to the right and down a bit from Jupiter and find Orion. Orion is one of the most easily recognisable constellations. The four bright stars at each corner of Orion and the three slightly fainter stars bisect across his middle to form his belt. Using your binoculars, look just below his belt to where his sword would hang and you’ll find a gaseous area, this is the famous Orion nebula; an area where new stars are being formed. The Orion Nebula is 1,300 light years from the Earth. ollow the three stars in Orion’s belt in a straight line up to the right and if you have good eyesight and your area is dark enough you should be able to see a very tight group of seven stars known as the Pleiades or seven sisters (pictured above). Look at them with your binoculars and you will discover a jewellery box containing hundreds of stars. The Pleiades is a group of very young stars and if you look carefully you should be able to see the gas cloud that still surrounds them. ow look directly overhead and find five stars that form the W shape of Cassiopeia. Use the right hand V of the W to form an arrow head and scan around this area slowly with your binoculars. Stop when you come to a sausage-shaped ‘fuzzy blob’. This is the Andromeda Galaxy. A separate galaxy outside of our own Milky Way about 2.5 million light years away, the most distant object visible to the naked eye.

Ford unveils plans for a prototype solar-powered hybrid car. With a full charge, Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept is estimated to have the same total range as a conventional C-MAX Energi of up to 620 miles, including up to 21 electric-only miles. The Ford C-Max Solar 'Charging socket' Energi Concept has a solar panel system on the roof which tracks the position of the sun. The company said it can draw power equal to a four-hour battery charge. Fully charged, the car could travel for up to 21 miles powered just on electricity.
The concept car will be on display at CES in Las Vegas before testing begins to see if production is feasible. The solar panel roof will use a separate offvehicle solar concentrator lens, similar to a magnifying glass, to ensure it absorbs enough energy. The Fresnal lens will follow the movement of the sun from east to west and direct sunlight to the solar cells which project researchers say boosts the impact of sunlight by a factor of eight.
Ford claim that a day's worth of sunlight will produce the same performance from the Solar Energi Concept as is given by their conventional plug-in hybrid car. Both vehicles would have the same range of 620 miles.
The concept car – which was developed from a collaboration between Ford, the Georgia Institute of Technology and SunPower Corp, a solar power company – will still have a conventional electrical charging socket so its charge can be topped up from the power grid. But Ford claim that by using the solar power system drivers will not be dependent on the grid to use the car. Research from the company suggests that in future the sun could power
up to 75% of all trips made by an average user in a solar hybrid vehicle.
However, it may be a while before solar panel cars are a common sight on the road, said Damion Smy from Car Magazine.
"What Ford has done here is clever use of solar technology, as it assists battery charging. "Solar power could be used to run ancillaries, such as air-conditioning, but the limited capability

Schumacher Simply repairs & servicing to stable but all makes and models at still critical unbeatable prices The hospital treating Michael Schumacher for head injuries says his condition remains stable but critical. Doctors in Grenoble say he is being continually monitored but they will not be releasing more health details. The former racing champion has been in a medically induced coma for the past eight days following a skiing accident in the French Alps.
Meanwhile prosecutors investigating the accident plan to give details of their probe on Wednesday. Monday's hospital statement said that the medical team will not be giving details of Schumacher's treatment for reasons of privacy, and no further press conferences were planned "for the time being".
The statement also asked journalists to refrain from reporting claims about the driver's health not originating from the medical team or his management.

Dennis Rodman takes team to North Korea Retired US basketball player Dennis Rodman has arrived in North Korea along with a team for a match marking leader Kim Jong-un's birthday.
Rodman last visited North Korea in December, shortly after the execution of Chang Song-thaek.
State Department officials have made it clear Rodman does not represent the US. The sportsman has also been strongly criticised for ignoring North Korea's human rights abuses.
This time, he leads a squad of players on a trip he is describing as "basketball diplomacy". The squad will play a North Korean team in an exhibition match.
Rodman and the team of former US National Basketball Association (NBA) players flew from Beijing on Monday ahead of Wednesday's match. Rodman, who says he is friends with the young North Korean leader, said his aim was to "connect two countries".
The fall of Kim Jong-un's once-powerful uncle was seen as a major shake-up at the very top of Pyongyang's elite. On that visit, Rodman's third, he did not meet Mr Kim, who is reported to be a basketball fan. He has met the young leader on his other two previous visits, however, and is the highest-profile American to have done so.

No Kings’ Joy For Málaga After the Christmas break it was back to La Liga action at La Rosaleda against joint top leaders Atlético Madrid in a mouth-watering clash. Málaga 0 - 1 Atlético Madrid. minute Málaga manager Bernd Schuster opted to make some changes of his own, with Santa Cruz and Duda replacing Juanmi and Eliseu.
Atlético turned up at La Rosaleda knowing that they would almost certainly have to win at Málaga if they were to end the weekend still level on points with Barcelona at the top of the standings.
A near full house saw Bernd Schuster send his Málaga team out with a cautious back five line-up, to counteract the pace of Diego Costa for Atletico. Málaga started slowly with Sergio Sanchez firing over the bar seven minutes in, after the ball had dropped invitingly for him in the area. Atlético created a few half chances, Caballero saving well from Juanfran with 23 minutes on the clock, after the defender had done well to get into the Málaga box. As the first half went on it was Málaga who came

more into the game and they created the better chances. Eliseau forced a save from Cortois and then Samuel shot just wide from a corner when the ball fell to him in the box. Another Málaga attack nearly ended in a goal, when Atlético’s Philipe Luis nearly diverted into his own net. Málaga did not want half time to come as they had Atlético on the
ropes, but the teams went into the break still all square.
Ex Málaga player Adrian came on in the second half as Simeone looked to change things for Atlético. In a rare break for the visitors the ball fell to Adrian who was brilliantly tackled by Weligton whose timely intervention saved Málaga. In the 65th
Wayne’s weekly Poker Tips Playing big flops and draws
There is nothing better than hitting a big hand on the flop, especially a set (3 of a kind) when the board does not show a flush or straight draw. The problem here is: How do we get paid? To this question there are a number of answers depending on how the hand played preflop and your reads on the other player(s) in the hand.
Let me give you an example of a hand I played very recently which will illustrated the value of playing a random hand when you have value, plus the dangers of playing a strong hand out of position very badly.
I was playing a sixhanded cash game online with blinds of 1€/50c on one of the big .es sites. Two of the players I had notes on – which in this case proved very helpful and is why when playing online we need to take notes of players. The one player I had noted was VTA (very tight aggressive) which means the hand selections they play is very limited to premium hands, so we have half a read on them before the flop is even dealt.
I found myself on the button looking down at 67 suited and our VTA player was under the gun which is first to act preflop. From this position they min raised which suggested to me they had a large over pair because they wanted a call. There was a call by the 2nd to act and the action folded round to myself and with 5.50€ in the pot and having position on the table I was getting good odds to call. The SB called and the BB called which meant a pot of 10€, so for a 2€ stake I was getting 5/1 on my money if I took the hand down. The Flop came down 5/K/8 rainbow giving me an open ended straight draw. The blinds checked and our VTA player again bet only 1.50€ into a 10€ pot suggesting either KK giving him trips or AA trying to keep a K/? in the hand. I called with my draw and the rest folded, I hit my dream card on the turn – a 9 which did not improve any possible flush draws giving me a straight. The VTA player now bet half the pot. It was now time to maximise my potential winnings so I hit back with a strong 3
bet with which he responded with a 4 bet all in ... of course I call! He showed AA and were drawing dead and I won a very nice pot!
Where did our friend go wrong? Without a doubt he played his hand very badly allowing a weak hand to out draw his AA. First of all he was easy to read because he only played premium hands, secondly he min raised in early position giving weak hands equity to call whereas with a big over pair you want to be heads up against a big A such as A/K or AQ. When raising in early position it is better to raise X3 but to be honest I like to raise the same whether I am playing AA or 56, as you give less clues away. Lastly he did not bet nearly enough on any street allowing me to call for a gut shot draw. Had he bet more aggressively he might have only won a small pot but would not have lost a large pot.
If you have any questions regarding poker or would like to add to anything in this column please email wayne@bolsa-fiesta.com
On 70 minutes and against the run of play Atlético went in front. A long ball found Diego Costa who squared to Adrian, his shot was well saved but the ball fell to Koke who lashed the ball home from inside the box. Málaga huffed and puffed but never really tested the Atlético keeper in the whole 90 minutes.
A good performance on the whole and a point would have been fair but that’s football. It’s Levante away next weekend as Málaga look for some New Year joy. Report by Scott Forbes
Ref Mark Clattenburg cleared over Southampton Lallana comments
Referee Mark Clattenburg has been cleared by the Football Association after Southampton took their complaint against him to the governing body.
Saints accused Clattenburg of insulting captain Adam Lallana during the 2-1 defeat at Everton last month. The official is believed to have told Lallana: "You're very different now you've played for England. You never used to be like this."
The Premier League dismissed an initial complaint from the club last week. The FA said in a statement it had given the matter its "full consideration" and "the comments, as disclosed in Southampton's letter of complaint, do not constitute misconduct under the FA's rules".
But the Saints are still adamant that they do not want Clattenburg back at St Mary’s – leading to a huge test of the Premier League’s position over the County Durham official.
Heather Knight is delighted to have put her injury woes to one side by striking a fine century in England Women’s sole Ashes warm-up game.
Knight was a key component of the side that overcame the old enemy last summer, striking a century in the Test of what was the maiden series featuring a multipleformat points system.
She suffered a torn hamstring towards the end of the rubber and subsequently missed the tour of the West Indies. However, Knight is back in the fold now and basking in a dream start – her 123 led England to 362 for six on day one against a home A side – ahead of the four-day encounter versus Australia, which begins on Friday. “I love playing Test matches. It is great to get
out there and have a bit of time to bat and see the ball coming on.
“It’s really enjoyable to get out there and back into whites.” Knight added: “Playing at the WACA is going to be great. I played a few ODIs there a few years ago and I enjoyed it.
While the warm-up game is of the utmost importance for now, the real challenge awaits in the coming days.
Skipper Charlotte Edwards, who struck 77 and put on 135 for the first wicket with Knight, was equally delighted. She said: “It is really pleasing to start the tour so well and for the team to be in the position we’re in, is even more pleasing.
Death of former champion jockey Terry Biddlecombe Three-time champion jump jockey Terry Biddlecombe, the husband of former trainer Henrietta Knight, has died aged 72 after a lengthy illness. Biddlecombe helped Knight train triple Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate.
Eighteen-times champion jump jockey AP McCoy paid tribute to him.
"Very sad news that former champion jockey and the legend that was Terry Biddlecombe has passed away. Thoughts with 'Hen' and his family. RIP," said McCoy on Twitter.

Ballesteros' family angry with European Tour A war of words has broken out between family members of the late Seve Ballesteros and the European Tour over a new team competition taking place in Malaysia next March. Vicente Ballesteros, brother of the late Seve, is aghast at the tour giving their backing to the EurAsia Cup, featuring teams representing Europe and Asia.He believes it could damage the Royal Trophy, an event supported by Seve (right) from its inception in 2006 and which also features teams representing Europe and Asia.
Portuguese gather to Zach Johnson wins the Tournament of Champions mourn hero Eusabio He started the New Year the same way he ended the last one. Johnson sank three consecutive birdies on the back nine at Kapalua and closed with 7-under 66 for a one-shot victory over Jordan Spieth in the Tournament of Champions on Monday.
Johnson didn't need any dramatics, like holing out from a drop zone on the last hole when he beat Tiger Woods in the World Challenge last month in California. This was mainly about chipping and putting, and Johnson is one of the best. He hit a wedge to 8 feet for birdie on the 14th to take the outright lead for the first time. Facing a dangerous shot up a steep slope to a green with a false front, he caught it perfectly on the 15th for an easy birdie. He hit wedge to 5 feet for a third straight birdie that gave him control. Spieth, who had a one-shot lead going to the back nine, birdied his last two holes for 69.
"I just picked it apart," said Johnson, who finished at 19-under 273. "I didn't deviate from anything I
typically do on a golf course."
Webb Simpson, tied with Spieth and defending champion Dustin Johnson to start the round, never caught up and closed with 70. He tied for third with Kevin Streelman (67). Jason Dufner was four strokes back in fifth, with Dustin Johnson, who made five bogeys, tied-sixth with Australian Adam Scott, Billy Horschel, Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar.
The only Briton in the 30-man field, Scotland's Martin Laird, finished 10 shots off the lead on 9 under.
Zach Johnson might now finally be acknowledged as one of the elite in golf, even though he doesn't have the raw power of his peers. It was the 11th win of his career. Since his rookie season in 2004, only Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh have won more PGA Tour events.
It also was his third win in his past six starts, dating to the BMW Championship north of Chicago in September that qualified him for the winners-only event in Kapalua.

Thousands of mourners gathered in a Lisbon football stadium to view the coffin of football legend Eusebio, ahead of his funeral on Monday. They clapped, chanted and waved banners as Eusebio's coffin was driven into the Luz stadium. Some lit firecrackers.
Portugal has declared three days of national mourning for the footballer, who died on Sunday from a heart attack, aged 71. He has been described as Portugal's first and greatest football superstar. Born in Mozambique when it was
still a Portuguese colony, Eusebio da Silva Ferreira went on to play 64 times for Portugal, scoring 41 goals.
The Benfica striker was top scorer at the 1966 World Cup in England, with nine goals, including four against North Korea. Widely considered one of the best players of all time, he scored 733 times in 745 professional matches.

Lizzy Yarnold wins skeleton gold at World Cup in Winterberg
Britain's Lizzy Yarnold took her third World Cup win of the season with a gold medal at Winterberg. Yarnold was tied with American Noelle Pikus-Pace after the first run but a clean second run saw her win by more than half a second in Germany. She has finished on the podium in all five World Cup races this season and is a strong medal contender for next month's Winter Olympics in Sochi. There are three more World Cup races left, in St Moritz, Igls and Konigssee before the Winter Games begin in Sochi, Russia, on 7th February.

A minute's silence was held at Real's Bernabeu stadium before kick-off in memory of Eusebio, who died from a heart attack at the weekend. Ronaldo said: "I dedicate these two goals to you Eusebio but in fact you were the one who scored them. You'll always be in my heart. We have lost one of the greatest players of all time."
