n 02 - General News ICKHAM’S

WORLD It makes me mad!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

I bang on in this column about the dangers and illegality of having fires at this time of year in the campo and, guess what?, this morning as I was walking my dogs past an area where a couple of builders were building a wall around the plot of an unfinished house I saw flames over a metre high. twice I asked nicely for them to put it out. they told me that they were “only burning the paper sacks that the cement comes in.” Well, doh, put the paper sacks in your pick-up truck and take them up to the bins that you have to go past on the way out. they would not put the fire out, even when I threatened to phone the police. I went and spoke to the Policia Local. twenty minutes later they had told me that, “well, it's only a couple of paper bags” and they were not prepared to even go and have a word with them. Of course, neither the builders nor the guys in the Policia Local have to live in the area where the fire was and therefore are not in imminent danger like myself and my vecinos. Next time, I'm taking a photograph of the fire and the builders and will go straight up to the Guardia Civil and do a proper denuncia. I cannot believe the attitude of these men and it was obvious they had no intention of doing anything for 2 reasons. Firstly, I'm a woman so what would I know about anything and, secondly, I'm a guiri.

World media focuses on bullfighting ban The BBC, Reuters, The Times, France Presse, Le Figaro and CNN are among the international media which have sent camera teams and reporters to Barcelona to cover a possible ban on bullfighting, due to be debated in the Catalan Parliament today (Wednesday). The World Society for the Protection of Animals delivered a petition to the Catalan Parliament on Monday, signed by 140,000 people in 120 countries, supporting the initiative to ban bullfighting. The Platform for the Defence of the Fiesta has published a report showing that the ban will cost the regional government some €300

million in compensations to be paid to bull breeders, ring owners and related activities and put hundreds of people out of work. But it looks as if the ban will go ahead. At the last parliamentary debate on the matter in December, 67 Catalan MPs voted for the ban and 59 against.

800,000 minors at risk Equality Minister Bibana Aido estimates that at least 800,000 minors live in an atmosphere of domestic violence and require special protection. Addressing one of the Summer Courses organised by Madrid's Complutense University, Sra Aido announced the creation of a joint protocol with regional governments to include minors in the social policies set up to combat domestic violence. She also expressed the hope that the country's judges would make greater use of the 3,000 GPS devices the government has made available for controlling abusers. Only 352 are currently in use.

Top marks for anti-human Guardia protest trafficking efforts at points system Spain was given the top mark of five in a report on international humantrafficking issued by the US State Department's Office To Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. The Office, headed by Ambassador-at-Large Luis CdeBaca, provides the tools to combat trafficking in persons and assists in the coordination of anti-

trafficking efforts both worldwide and domestically. Ambassador CdeBaca handed over a copy of the Office's 2010 report to Equality Minister Bibiana Aido at a meeting in Madrid on Monday. The report evaluates the “efforts and commitments” made by the governments of more than 180 countries to eradicate human trafficking. The office and

King asks politicians to work for unity King Juan Carlos set out his thoughts for the country and its politicians as he and Queen Sofia greeted pilgrims in Santiago de Compestela During his traditional petition to the Apostle St James on his day, celebrated on Sunday in the Santiago de Compostela cathedral, King Juan Carlos asked the country's patron saint to “enlighten our authorities and those responsible for economic and social policies, to serve the general interest generously, to work for unity and understanding, and to deal efficiently with our citizens' problems”. He also asked the Apostle “to foment all that unites us and makes us stronger, to make Spain one big united family which at the same

Zapatero celebrates 10 years as party leader At a ceremony to celebrate his ten years as leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said “we should not let ourselves be dragged down by desperation even though things look pretty bad”. He went on: “Things are better than they look and we're going to live”. Sr Zapatero was elected as general secretary by just nine votes on July 22nd, 2000 at the Socialists' 35th Congress. José Bono, who was premier of the Castilla-La Mancha regional the time, had been the favourite. Sr Zapatero made him Defence Minister in 2004 and he is currently Speaker of the House. Bono told reporters after the ceremony that he had expected to be party leader when he went to bed that night, but shrugged off his defeat saying, “well, that's life”.

He said the Spanish people had overcome all difficulties in the past and solved all their problems within the framework of the Constitution. After the ceremony, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia greeted pilgrims from more than 50 countries from the balcony of the Town Hall. They were accompanied by the premier of Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, Development Minister José Blanco, and former Galician premier Manuel Fraga.

Imanol Arias, the star of one of the most popular TV series ever, Cuentame como pasó (Tell me how it happened) said at the launch of the next series that he was not a Socialist, even though most people seemed to think he was. The popular actor said that today's politicians are too media-conscious and worse than the politicians who took the reins after the Constitution was approved in 1978. He said power was no longer vested in the people and democracy was almost a farce. For the past 11 years, Cuentame como pasó has traced the ups and downs of a Spanish family under the Franco dictatorship starting in the mid1960s. It is now in the 70s and Arias said it would continue until it reached the present day.

Spanish girls in German tragedy Two Spanish students – Clara Zapater, 22, and 21-year-old Marta Acosta - were among the 20 people who died in the Love Parade stampede in Duisburg on Saturday. Eleven of the victims were German and the other eight came from Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, China, Bosnia and Spain. They ranged in age from 20 to 40. The number injured in the disaster was put at 511 on Monday. None of the injuries were lifethreatening. It is still not clear how many people were at the scene when the crush happened, outside a tunnel at the entrance to the techno music festival.

German media said the festival had drawn about 1.4 million people but a local official in charge of the emergency response said the site "can hold 300,000 people and it was at no time full". Critics argued that the organisers and police were not prepared for such huge numbers of visitors and the site itself - an old railway yard - was too small and completely unsuitable.

Spain maintains Kosovo stance

Police focus on aggressive drivers

Despite the UN Security Council’s decision last week to recognise Kosovo as an independent state, Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos confirmed the Spanish government’s stance of not recognising the Balkan country’s unilateral declaration of independence in February 2008. Spain’s attitude is based on its own problems with independence movements in the Basque Country and Catalonia. Catalan and Basque separatists welcomed the Security Council’s recognition, seeing it as a glimmer of hope for the eventual recognition of their independent states.

Highway security coordinator Bartolomé Vargas has said that the Judicial Police will be given instructions to pursue aggressive drivers under the section of the Traffic Law that deals with reckless driving. He said the psychological effects of being harassed by such drivers could make motorists lose control of their vehicles. He cited being tail gated by a driver in the fast lane as an

Spain one of EU’s ‘least satisfied’ Spain is one of the unhappiest countries in the EU, according to a Gallup poll published in Forbes magazine. example. Sr Vargas said such behaviour was the result of a “misunderstood masculinity” by a driver who tries to “prove with a vehicle what he cannot prove in other spheres”. He said this behaviour becomes criminal when “the car is used as an instrument to affirm power, status and unfriendly competitiveness, as well as being a manifestation of violence”.

satisfaction. Spain ranked 43 on the world scale and 16 of the 21 EU countries. Only Greece and France from the old 15-country EU ranked lower. Spaniards’ main worries were the economic crisis and unemployment. The happiest countries were Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Holland, in that order.

Some councils pass transparency test Transparency International’s 2010 evaluation of 110 local councils in Spain shows that 21 obtained distinctions while the rest averaged a mark of 7 out of 10. According to the Ayuntamientos Transparency Index, Bilbao is the most corruption-free council, with Murcia the least. The evaluation uses 80 indicators in five areas: information about the local council, relations with residents and society, economic-financial

transparency, and transparency in services contracts and in town planning and public works. The sample is small - there are more than 13,000 municipalities in Spain, 100 of them in Malaga province alone. A spokesman for the Ortegas-Marañon Foundation – a private foundation involved in social research – welcomed the assessment but said corruption is getting worse in Spain, especially in urban planning-related areas.

Lowest number of migrants

Imams 'should fight extremists'

CANARY ISLAND. So far this year, only 21 illegal migrants in six boats have reached the islands, the lowest number in ten years, thanks to increased collaboration between Spain and the West African countries. The number has dropped steadily since 2007, when more than 8,500 migrants arrived in 93 boats. Last year, this was down to 2,570 migrants in 22 boats.

MADRID. The moderate imam of the Leganés mosque, Moneir el Messery, said on Saturday that any extremist imam “who fills his followers with hatred against a country or a people” should be expelled. He said it was a “very serious problem” and that he and other moderate imams should help the Interior Ministry to root out the extremists.

Guardia fines drop 70%

Election campaign ads limited

MADRID. The Guardia Civil's Unified Association said last week that 70% fewer fines were issued in June this year – 58,000 – in comparison with the 188,000 fines collected in June last year. This supports an allegation by the Traffic Authority that the Guardia were staging a “pens down” protest against the government's 5% cuts in public sector workers' salaries.

MADRID. The main political parties – the Socialist Party and the Partido Popular – have agreed that the Electoral Council should be able to control the time allotted to election ads by the private television stations. This is nothing more than the enforcement of a law passed in 1988 regulating election ads on private TV stations which has never been implemented.

World News Tory MPs seek date change

Right-winger David Davis

Forty-four Tory MPs are seeking a change to the May 5th 2011 date of the planned voting reform referendum because elections for the Welsh Assembly, the Scottish Parliament, the Northern Ireland Assembly and some English councils are all also due on that date. As a result, the MPs said, the referendum turnout could be made too uneven, because of the different elections across the UK. A Downing Street source called reports of a revolt against electoral reform "a little exaggerated". Former cabinet ministers Peter Lilley, John Redwood and Sir Malcolm Rifkind have signed a Commons motion of complaint about the referendum date. Also

among the signatories to the document, tabled by Tory MP and former defence spokesman Bernard Jenkin, is former shadow home secretary David Davis. He reportedly described the coalition last week as the "Brokeback Coalition", a mocking reference to the film Brokeback Mountain, which deals with the relationship between two gay cowboys. Mr Davis said

media reports were based on a mis-hearing. But there have been rumours that a "Brokeback Club" could be formed among right-wing Tory MPs unhappy at the policies adopted by the coalition. That fuelled talk of coalition tensions after senior Lib Dem MP Tim Farron referred to some of his Tory colleagues on the government backbenches as "toxic".

Cameron backs Turkey's EU bid

BlackBerrys a 'security risk'

David Cameron said he wanted to "pave the road" for Turkey to join the EU when he addressed the Turkish Parliament on Monday.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has said that it could move to restrict or monitor BlackBerry mobile phones, because they pose a "national security risk". The Regulatory Authority said as BlackBerry stores its data offshore, it operates beyond the jurisdiction of national legislation and its misuse may have "serious social, judicial and national security repercussions". But media freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders said that the UAE’s technological leadershop in the Arab world was compromised by repressive filtering laws which blocked sites critical of Government policy, increased surveillance and censorship, and claimed there were plans to step up checks on internet and mobile phone users.

Cameron said the country was "vital for our economy, vital for our security and vital for our diplomacy". On his first visit as prime minister, he said the country could become a "great European power", helping build links with the Middle East. He compared hostility to the membership bid in some parts of the EU with the way the UK's entry was once blocked. "When I think about what Turkey has done to defend Europe as a Nato ally, and what Turkey is doing today in Afghanistan, alongside our European allies, it makes me angry that your progress towards EU membership can be frustrated in the way

it has been. "My view is clear. I believe it is just wrong to say that Turkey can guard the camp but not be allowed to sit in the tent. So I will remain your strongest possible advocate for EU membership and greater influence at the top table of European diplomacy." Observers believe that Turkey is unlikely to join in the next 10 years, partly because of opposition from countries such as France. Its refusal to recognise EU member Cyprus, growing support for pro-Islamic parties on the mainland and treatment of the Kurdish minority all remain potential stumbling blocks.

Delhi clean-up for Games

Tony Hayward is to leave his post in October

BP posts record loss for oil spill BP said on Monday that the $32.2 billion it has already set aside to cover the costs linked to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has given it a loss of $17 billion for the three months between April and June - a UK record. BP admitted the total costs could rise even further. The company also confirmed that chief executive Tony Hayward is to leave his post by mutual agreement in October. Mr Hayward, 53, will receive a year's salary plus benefits worth more than £1m. He will also be entitled to draw an annual pension of £600,000 once he turns 55. Mr Hayward's pension pot is valued at about £11m and he will keep his rights

to shares under a longterm performance scheme which could - depending on BP's stock market recovery - be worth several million pounds eventually. He will be replaced by fellow executive Bob Dudley, who is currently in charge of day-to-day clean-up operations in the Gulf. Mr Hayward is likely to retain a role within the company. BP plans to nominate him as a nonexecutive director of its

Russian joint venture, TNK-BP. BP also announced it would sell off $30bn of assets. Meanwhile on Tuesday, Greenpeace claimed that its activists had closed down BP petrol stations in central London in an effort to persuade the company to adopt greener energy policies. A BP spokesman described the stunt as "an irresponsible and childish act which is interfering with safety systems".

The Indian government plans to clean up Delhi in advance of October’s Commonwealth Games. This involves relocating some 250,000 stray dogs, 800,000 slum dwellers and 120,000 pavement squatters as well as 45,000 sacred cows, plus donkeys, bulls, goats, rats, snakes and even elephants and camels that are hired for general festivities and fairs. The clean-up will cost at least $65 million. The Games, which open on October 3rd, will bring an estimated 10,000 athletes from 71 nations and territories to compete in 17 disciplines over 11 days. In addition, there will be over 150,000 officials and an estimated 50,000 tourists. Estimates for the Games budget range from the official figure of $2 billion to the unofficial estimates of $6 billion, set against the initial projection of $413m. However, thanks to the Games, the city of 16 million inhabitants will get 26 new flyovers, 18 railway bridges and a new airport terminal capable of handling 60 million passengers a year.

Expelled spies had 'tough lives'

Emergency over cold weather

FOROS, UKRAINE. During a visit on Saturday, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told journalists he had met the Russian agents recently deported from the US - and claimed that “every one of them had a tough life” and had been "betrayed". The 10 Russians admitted in a US court earlier this month to being agents for a foreign country.

PERU. The government has declared a state of emergency in more than half the country because of winter temperatures, which regularly drop below 0º C. However, this year they have dropped to as low as -24C. Hundreds of people - nearly half of them very young children - have died of coldrelated diseases, such as pneumonia, in the country's mountainous south.

World rallies for Iranian woman

Khmer Rouge prison chief guilty

WORLDWIDE. Protesters marched in London, Toronto, New York, Paris, Berlin and other cities on Saturday “to make the world stand still” in support of an Iranian woman sentenced to death for adultery. Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was originally sentenced to death by stoning but the sentence was put on hold following an international outcry. However, her death sentence remains in place.

CAMBODIA. Former Khmer Rouge prison chief Duch has been found guilty of crimes against humanity by Cambodia's UN-backed war crimes tribunal and sentenced to 35 years in jail. Duch, 67, whose full name is Kaing Guek Eav, admitted overseeing the torture and execution of thousands of men, women and children at the notorious Tuol Sleng prison, and asked for forgiveness.

Old people's home owner jailed A Malaga court has sentenced the former owner and director of “Nuestra Señora de Gracia” residence for old people in Alhaurin de la Torre to six and a half years in jail on charges of defrauding several of the residents. Her son, who faced similar charges, was absolved. The woman had apparently obtained money from several residents who

Search for Mijas hiker continues

No safe harbour for criminals

Some 125 people in 19 groups are still searching for the Mijas hiker who disappeared early last week, covering several routes between Churriana and Ojén.

International criminals who used to use the Costa del Sol as an operations base have taken some hard knocks in the past 18 months. In 2009, the National Police in Marbella arrested 32 criminals wanted in their countries of origin, and another dozen have been arrested so far this year. Marbella is no longer a safe refuge for the Russian, Italian, Georgian and Irish mafias. Marbella police chief Rafael Madrona said the operations carried out by the town’s Urban Delinquency Group II had contributed enormously to the reduction of organized crime and the prevention of serious crimes by such people. Nevertheless, there where still a number of foreign residents in the town who the police were interested in, said Rafael Nieva, head of the judicial police’s local brigade. He said the Mediterranean coast in general attracted criminals wanted in their own countries because of the quality of life it offers. He said the majority remained inactive, not wanting to call attention themselves in order to avoid discovery. Sr Nieva said that after a few years, some of them even forget they are wanted men. But the local police forces haven’t forgotten and continue their patient search to root them out.

Juan Antonio Gomez Alarcon, 32, an experienced speleologist and mountaineer, disappeared on July 20th after telling his family he was going on a hike. The family were not unduly worried because they said he often went on for a few days but when he had not returned by the weekend they reported the matter to the police. Known as an intrepid explorer of caves that other people are wary of entering, his family fear that he has become

Police arrest mother after finding body The Guardia Civil have arrested the mother of the five-year-old German boy who was found dead in the Sierra del Castillo, Cordoba, last Saturday, five days after he disappeared. She faces a charge of negligent homicide. The mother and child had arrived in the area from their home in North Westphalia in Germany a week earlier for a camping holiday and were seen fishing in the Puente Nuevo

reservoir on the Monday. The following day the mother was found in a bruised and dehydrated state near her car which had broken down, and taken to hospital in Cordoba. There was no sign of the boy. An empty water bottle and two backpacks were found near the boy's body. Police said it looked as if the woman had been trying to get help when she collapsed near the car but had been unable to tell rescuers where she had left her son.

Unpaid crew stranded on ship A labour dispute has left the 20-man crew of the cargo ship, Easter Planet, anchored in Algeciras port, without food and electricity. The men, mainly Ukranians, have not been paid for six months and decided to go on strike when the ship put in at

Algeciras several days ago. The Port Authority and the local Red Cross are supplying the crew with food and water until the ship's Panamanian owners can be contacted in an effort to find a solution acceptable to both parties.

A 48'year-old British woman was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning after neighbours rang the National Police to report an incident at a house in the Torremuelle urbanisation in Benalmadena. There they found the body of her 57year-old husband, also British, who had apparently been stabbed. The police said they had no record of domestic violence involving the couple. The woman is currently awaiting a court hearing in Torremolinos.

Summer gives villages new life Some 30 small villages in the Ronda area and the Axarquia in danger of disappearing because of their low birth rate and people leaving to seek work elsewhere, spring back to life in the summer as villagers return to spend some time with their families. The towns, most of which have less than 500 inhabitants, also benefit from the drift of tourists away from the coast, seeking the tranquillity and beauty of the inland villages or the movement and colour of their annual ferias.

Marbella abuzz over Obama visit

EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? send your stories and pictures to The News

editorial@thenewsonline.es

Families evacuated Rock divers to be fined because of fire

The news that Michele Obama and her youngest daughter are to spend five days in Marbella – from August 4th to 8th – has set the local and national press speculating as to whether the President will accompany them. And repeated denials by the White House have not stilled the rumours, fueled by the fact that President Obama celebrates his 49th birthday on August 4th. But with him or without him, the visit will do more to restore Marbella – and the Costa del Sol – as a desirable destination for US travellers than all the advertising campaigns in the world. Some 40 rooms have been booked at the luxurious Villa Padierna hotel for Mrs Obama, her daughter and an entourage of some 60 bodyguards and other White House staff. Any empty rooms at the hotel were filled within hours of the news about the Obama

visit hitting the headlines. The president of the Costa del Sol's Hoteliers Association (Aehcos), José Carlos Escribano, said the visit was of “incalculable value”. He added: “It will give a tremendous boost to the brand image of the Costa del Sol with Marbella at the head of it.” The Junta de Andalucia's tourism councillor, Luciano Alonso, could not contain his satisfaction when he heard the news in Shanghai where he is visiting the Universal Expo. He described it as the best promotion the Costa del Sol could have, but asked people to respect Mrs Obama's privacy. “We want to make

her visit as pleasant as possible,” he said. From Marbella, Mrs Obama and her daughter will go on to Mallorca, where they are expected

to have lunch with the Royal family. King Juan Carlos did not meet Mrs Obama when he lunched with President Obama during a visit to Washington in February.

estePONA. Six families were evacuated from a block of flats in the Solis district of the town after a fire broke out on the second floor on Saturday. The only casualty was a pet dog in the flat that caught fire. However, the six families could not return to their homes until Monday, when local council technicians assessed the damage.

Rental bike service Biomedical centre planned inaugurated RONDA. The town now has a fleet of 70 bicycles distributed among seven racks, provided by Energy Agency of Andalucia and the local council at a cost of €110,000.

MAtALAscAñAs beAch, hueLVA. The Ayuntamiento intends to fine beachgoers who dive from a 7 metre high rock known as El Tapon (bottle cap) from €3,000 to €6,000 in an effort to avoid serious accidents. A spokesman said in the past medics have had to deal with too many head injuries. The rock will be surrounded by buoys to thwart divers.

The scheme – which can be signed up for at the Municipal Swimming Pool or the Tourism Office – will save the equivalent of 39,000 litres of petrol a year.

MALAGA. The Junta de Andalucia and the University of Malaga have signed an agreement to build the region's third biomedical research centre with up to 24 laboratories, which should be finished by 2012 and will form the basis of the province's future regional hospital. Most of the investment – an estimated €13.5 million – will come from the pharmaceutical industry.

The Local Voice

Muriel Pilkington

Memo from Madrid

Martin Delfín

Writes for the English language version of El Pais

A strange obsession

Pipedreams from Pristina

F

T

or the life of me I can’t understand the Foreign Minister’s obsession with Cuba, when everything in his professional career as a diplomat points entirely in the opposite direction. Before Zapatero gave him the top slot in foreign affairs in 2004, Miguel Angel Moratinos’s first posting abroad was as First Secretary at the Spanish Embassy in Yugoslavia (1979-80), then he took over as Chargé d'affaires from 1980 to 1984. He picked up his working knowledge of Russian and Serbo-Croatian here – he’s fluent in English and French, having married a Frenchwoman. In 1984 he moved on to Morocco, where he was the political adviser at the Spanish Embassy in Rabat until 1987 when he was posted back to the ministry in Madrid. He was Deputy Director General for Northern Africa (1991-93), then Director General of the Institute for Cooperation with the Arab World (1991-93) and ended up as Director General of Foreign Policy for Africa and the Middle East (1993-96). In 1996 he was appointed Spain’s ambassador to Israel. At the end of his stint there, the EU appointed him as its special representative for the Middle East Peace process.

A

nd not a whiff of Cuba or other lands West in all this. Perhaps, like so many of us in those heady days of the 1960s, he was an ardent admirer of Che Guevara. (In the summer of 1967, my then Spanish fiancé and I were figuring out how to raise the money to join Che’s guerrilla force in Bolivia. Thank God we couldn’t, or I probably wouldn’t be sitting here writing this.)

O

f course, Fidel was our revolutionary God in those days, an illusion finally shattered in the late 1970s when Venezuelan guerrilla leader Douglas Bravo swore to me that it was Fidel who ordered the Bolivian Communist Party to betray Che’s whereabouts – on orders from Moscow. The Russians hated Che with a passion because he made no secret of the fact that he despised them for betraying the original ideals of the Russian revolution.

F

idel is still around making mischief for the Americans and his most ardent admirer outside of Latin America seems to be Moratinos. He has spent the past six years trying to convince the EU to soften its stance on Cuba – only limited emergency aid until Cuba improves its human rights record – and Cuba’s release of 20 political prisoners in the past two weeks has encouraged him to renew his mission with a vengeance. In front of the cameras, Moratinos is usually pretty non-committal, making his statements in a calm, diplomatic way. But the other day, when announcing the imminent arrival of the first batch of freed Cuban dissidents, he got carried away – predicting that Cuba's promise to release dozens of political prisoners over the next four months would improve its relations not only with the European Union but with the United States as well. In the latter case, he said Cuba’s move could eventually

lead to the lifting of the long-standing US embargo against the island.

I

hadn’t seen him so excited since he accused former PM Jose Maria Aznar and George W Bush of being behind the April 2001 coup attempt against Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez. I was living in Caracas at the time, and what really happened was that a march by protesting national oil company workers was fired on by soldiers as they approached the presidential palace. The march was being filmed live and it was quite obvious that the marchers were not armed. Nineteen were killed and at this point, the military high command abandoned Chavez and arrested him. They let him go less than 48 hours later when the interim government consisting of businessmen suspended the Constitution. Admittedly Aznar and Bush would have welcomed Chavez’s removal from the scene, as would 70% of the Venezuelan people at the time.

S

ince then, through trickery, bribery and downright election fraud, Chavez and his minions have managed to destroy the Venezuelan economy, driving hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans into exile. He is now beating the drums of war against Colombia which claims to have evidence that he is harbouring Colombian guerrillas on the Venezuela side of the border – but he’s been doing that since he took power in 1999. Moratinos is keeping quiet this time around, having finally learned that Chavez will twist the truth every which way to back his claim that the US is trying to overthrow him. Now he’s threatening to cut off oil supplies to the US, boasting that his army is ready take on – and beat - the Colombian and US armies.

O

f course it’s all a load of hot air. Unlike the Colombian military, the Venezuelan military have no experience in the field, and if all Chavez’s soldiers are like the ones shown in the photo, Colombia and the US have very little to fear from his “People’s Army”.

he recognition by the International Court of Justice that Kosovo didn’t break any laws when it unilaterally declared independence in 2008 has given false hopes to an array of separatist supporters across Spain. Soon after the July 22nd ruling was handed down by the judges in The Hague, hosts of Catalans, Basques and even Galicians celebrated what they believe is a new road, if not vindication, for their struggle for secession. These days the biggest calls for independence are coming from Catalonia where the nationalist parties are still shell-shocked over the Constitutional Court ’s rejection recently of 14 clauses in the region’s statute. Joan Puigcercós, president of the left-wing Catalan party, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), said: “The highest UN court has recognised that democracy is above the principle of territorial integrity.”

T

his has made Madrid a bit nervous. But there can be no comparison between the UN court’s reasoning and the secessionists’ hallucinations about the Balkanisation of Spain. .Kosovo’s recent history does not nearly mimic any event that has taken place in any of the Spanish autonomous regions. The Kosovans were subjected to a vicious campaign of ethnic cleansing of Albanians waged by Serbian warlords during 1990s, which has been followed by hostile tensions between Belgrade and Pristina that continue today. Kosovo argued that the UN resolution 1244, passed in 1999 and which called for all forces of the former Yugoslavia to withdraw from the region and hand over the disputed area to the United Nations, did not specify a preferred political status for Kosovo. For that reason, the doors for the Kosovan people to decide their own political future had been opened. No such proposal is being discussed at the UN level on Catalonia or the Basque Country.

D

eputy Prime Minister María Teresa Fernández de la Vega was adamant when she said it was “unrealistic” to compare Kosovo with Catalonia , and Catalan Socialist regional premier José Montilla also said there are no correlations. But voices outside of Spain are unsettling the continent’s political waters. Before the ruling was handed down, Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic warned that it was unclear whether UN member states are going to be safe from secessionist ambitions. “In other words we are going to know if the unilateral declaration of secession is a legal norm,” he said.

O

n the other hand, Kosovo and Serbia, are both lobbying to become part of the EU but Brussels frowns on any type of separatist movements among its members. But because Kosovo broke from Serbia before either nation has been formally asked to join the EU (Serbia formally applied for membership last December, Kosovo has yet to file its petition), it may be a long

time before the 27-member community will welcome either of them. Five EU members – Spain, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Cyprus, all with restless regions – do not recognise Kosovo, and the EU is still discussing a common position in the wake of the ICJ ruling. On Monday during a meeting of his EU colleagues, Foreign Minister Miguel Ángel Moratinos reiterated Madrid’s position, confirming that Spain would stick to its non-recognition policy.

W

ith so much noise against the ICJ’s opinion, do the Catalans and the Basque really believe that Kosovo is a landmark decision that will lead to the long fulfilled dream of a Spanish breakup? Their pipe dreams are far from even reaching the pipeline.

Unruly air controllers

I

n 1981, just several months after he came to office, US President Ronald Reagan fired 11,345 striking air traffic controllers who refused to return to the airport towers. They were arguing for a wage increase and threatened to cripple the nation’s air traffic if their demands weren’t met. Reagan had said that the strike was illegal and jeopardized national security. It was a bold move on the Republican president’s part.

N

ow Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is facing a similar situation with air controller’s unions complaining of the wage cuts the government has imposed. The Spanish air controllers are the highest paid in comparison with their European counterparts. There hasn’t been a called strike, but the government is under the sneaky suspicion that there is a covert strike underway after dozens of air controllers called in sick last week at Barcelona ’s El Prat airport, slowing traffic and causing delays.

K

eeping the air space safe and clear is a top national security priority for any country. Should the unions decide to call a strike at the height of the summer season, the government says it will call in soldiers to work the towers. At the same time, privatization of the air traffic positions at some of the smaller airports will begin in September. It is not as drastic as Reagan’s decision but it is a smart move by the Socialist government to deal with unruly employees.

by email Just thought readers would like to know that the Albeniz cinema in Malaga has been all refurbished and is beautiful now, and open with all their films shown in VO! They show a lot of independent and art films so it is a great addition to our choices of films. Below is the website where you can see what's playing, and though the times aren't listed there is a number to call. When we

Coin passed by there the other day all the films seemed to be at 16:00, 18:00, 20:00, and 22:00 which may be the regular times now. We're sure others would like to know what’s on and when. Go to http://www.cinealbeniz.co m/index.php?seccion=cart elera for more information. Thanks for your great paper!

Name & address supplied by email After reading in last week's The News about the Coín mayor asking the foreign community for suggestions as to how to make their life more agreeable, I wrote to ask him to look into my case. For health reasons, I need to sell my house and have just lost a buyer – who are

very thin on the ground these days – because the Ayuntamiento refuses to give me a Certificado de Obra and a certificado de primera ocupacion, heaven knows why, and without which the banks will not give prospective buyers a mortgage. I will keep you informed.

I was utterly astounded last Sunday to hear a big going on on Sky News due to the fact that Marks and Spencer are launching a range of clothing for bigger children. One person (skinny) was saying that it was disgusting and that the parents should make their children thin and healthy and the other ( a larger lady herself ) was saying that everyone is different and that, of course we should strive to be healthy but there will always be people who are a little on the large side. Also, Miss Skinny was being amazingly rude and condescending even though she had a supercilious smile on her face while doing it. What I would really like to know is, if companies didn’t cater for overweight kids, what are they supposed to do? Go around in the nude?! Well done M&S for adressing the problem and letting these children feel normal amongst their peers.

Planets Galore! If you have a clear view of the western horizon this week then you should be able to spot no less than four planets all nicely grouped together.

Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn are all on view and should be quite easy to spot just after sunset. Because Mercury is so close to the Sun then it can only be seen when it is either to the far right of the Sun and is seen in the morning before sunrise or, as it is now, to the far left of the Sun and appears after sunset. But Mercury is a tiny little world and even at its best it is always very difficult to find unless you know exactly where and when to look for it. Venus is also closer to the Sun than we are but as it is the closest planet to Earth it always shines more brightly than any of the other planets in the sky, so you really can’t mistake Venus. At the moment it is at its most extreme to the left of the Sun but over the next few weeks it will gradually move closer and closer towards the Sun as it goes around in its orbit. By the beginning of October Venus will have moved to the right of the Sun and will begin to rise in the early morning before sunrise.

Mars and Earth are now moving away from each other so it is fading fast. I’m still receiving emails from people asking me if it’s true that Mars will appear as big as the Moon during August - this is definitely not true! Mars is not much bigger than the Moon anyway but is over 140 times farther away, so think of it this way, if the Moon was 1 mile away then Mars would be 140 miles away, a slight problem with scale is apparent. Saturn is by far the most fascinating planet because of its famous rings system. The rings are made from billions of small pieces of rock and ice that circle the planet around its equator. Although the rings stretch for thousands of kilometres away from the planet they are only a few metres in thickness, and as Saturn orbits the Sun (it takes about 33 years to orbit once) then the rings are sometimes seen ‘wide open’ or, as they are now, almost edge on to us and through a small telescope they appear as ‘spikes’ sticking out from the sides of Saturn.

Don’t forget, you can still join me at the top of the mountain in Benalmadena every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout July and August at our open air planetarium. Take the cable car from Tivoli World to the top of the mountain and beginning at 10.00pm until 11.30 we use giant telescopes and high powered laser beams to show you the night sky. Remember to bring a light jacket with you as it can sometimes get a little cold at 2500ft after the sun has gone down.

Zoe

The animal rescue charities always find it difficult to find a loving home for older dogs - and this pretty little girl Zoe is no exception. She was dumped just two weeks ago at the gates of SOS in a box with two other members of her family, aged 14 months and four months. The two younger dogs are likely to be lucky and to find a home. But Zoe, who weighs around 4 kilos, is eight years old. She would

make the perfect pet for people happy to give a home to an older dog who does not need much exercise. What Zoe is most looking for is a lap to snuggle onto. If SOS cannot find a home for her she will have to spend the rest of her days in the refuge - a very different life to the one she was used to. If you can help by offering to give her a home please telephone 626 351 881.

Money Saving Tip of the Week Does your dog cost you a fortune in Scalibor (sandfly) Collars by losing them? If the answer if yes then here is a solution that will keep your costs down. Buy an inexpensive webbing collar, take the scalibor collar and cut off the buckle and then with a

David

few small stitches, attach the Scalibor collar to the inside of the webbing collar. Now you have protection for your dog even when it is playing rough and protection for your pocket as you will only need to buy the standard 2 a year.

If you want someone who will eat whatever you put in front of him and never say it's not quite as good as his mother's - adopt a dog. If you want someone always willing to go out, at any hour, for as long and wherever you want - adopt a dog. If you want someone who will never touch the remote, doesn't care about football, and can sit next to you as you watch romantic movies - adopt a dog. If you want someone who is content to get on your bed just to warm your feet and whom you can push off if he snores - then adopt a dog ! If you want someone who never criticizes what you do, doesn't care if you are

pretty or ugly, fat or thin, young or old, who acts as if every word you say is especially worthy of listening to, and loves you unconditionally, perpetually - then adopt a dog. BUT, on the other hand, if you want someone who will never come when you call, ignores you totally when you come home, leaves hair all over the place, walks all over you, runs around all night and only comes home to eat and sleep, and acts as if your entire existence is solely to ensure his happiness - then adopt a cat! Now be honest, you thought I was gonna say ....marry a man, didn't you?

See the sights on a motorised magic carpet Former US President George W Bush famously fell off one. And a whole episode of "Frasier" revolved around Niles Crane hilariously scooting around on one while he patronised the "foot people", before Daphne tricked him off it and raced away on board. WRITTEN BY Andrea MacLean

T

he odd-looking Segway is a British invention - the stand-on scooter was designed to make motorised travel user friendly and it's mostly seen in shopping centres and airports as it helps security guards and policemen get around vast areas with ease and speed.

N

ow the stand-on scooter is making its mark on the streets of Malaga as it lets visitors to the city centre take in the sights while saving on shoe leather. Horse drawn carriages and tourist buses are familiar sights - now the Segway is set to rival them all as it provides a fun way of taking you into the heart of the city, to the botanical gardens, the Roman remains, the beach and to the heights beyond the Moorish Alcazaba fortress, up to the viewing terrace at the splendid Parador.

I

t's a clever, easy to use and environmentally friendly transport system which is clean, quiet and fun and

offers a great solution for sightseeing without limits as the battery lasts for hours and you travel safely through pedestrianised areas.

reckoned there was nothing to stop anyone with a bit of nouse. You need the smallest of body twists to manoevere and the machine stops on a sixpence so a bit of balance plus a sensible approach is the key. And then you are off - because so little effort is involved it feels eerily like floating along on a magic carpet - well, how one imagines a magic carpet might be.

S

egways may only have two wheels but they are perfectly balanced thanks to an ingenious system of electronic gyroscopes which keep the rider in an upright position. So, simply step on with both feet, lean forward to go forwards and backwards to reverse. Steering is simple too - move the central handle from one side to the other. Before setting off you are kitted out with a visibility vest and helmet and put in some practise in a quiet square - after just a few minutes you will be raring to go.

I

I

t was a bit nerve wracking at first - after all, we are used to two wheels being one in front of the other and not side by side. And the practise is really important so you can get your balance sorted out. But quite honestly, if wussy Niles could do it, I

n groups of two to six, plus a guide, tours of up to two hours take place each day throughout the city taking in the secret streets, the sights associated with Picasso, and the Cathedral and Botanical Gardens. Cruise along the promenade past the port and down to the Malagueta beach before heading uphill to the Gibralfaro and beyond. For those more interested in food there's a Gastronomic Tapas Tour as well. Kids over nine can go to but you will need to make sure that they follow the rules and don´t decide to add in some cool skateboarding moves.

S

o, for those of us wondering just what to do with those summer visitors why not add a Segway tour to the list - hop on board and soak in the atmosphere in the city without having to break into a sweat. To find out more visit www.Segwaymalagatours.com

ABOUT

National Showjumping Competition Horse show lovers are expected to flock to Estepona this weekend as top professional show jumpers from Spain and other countries are put through their paces in a fiercely fought competition. The three day spectacular starts on Friday and finishes on Sunday during which time the skill, accuracy and athleticism of both horse and rider will be put to the test. But the show is not just about leading professionals, who will be in competition each evening. During the day, from 9am until 2pm, local riders will get the chance to pit themselves against the course, with the chance of winning trophies. One of the most breathtaking highlights comes on Saturday July 31st

AUDITION NOTICE

- the Six Bars Competition. This is a knock out jumping contest, in which both horse and rider must overcome these bars in successive rounds, reaching heights of up to 2 metres. This competition will last until the early hours of the morning with cash prizes of up to 6,000 euros. The Escuela de Arte Ecuestre, Costa del Sol is the venue for the show. It is one of the most renowned equestrian centres in Spain, offering the most modern facilities in Europe. Complying with the latest Health and Safety Legislations the Escuela de Arte Ecuestre Costa del Sol is a British Horse Society (BHS) approved riding establishment as well as officially recognized by the Andalucian Federation of Horse Riding (FAH) and

awarded with the highest ranking, 4 stirrups. Its outstanding facilities include a spacious restaurant, El Abrevadero, where the spectators can enjoy the competition taking place in the arena, whilst treating their taste buds to some of the mouth watering dishes in the menu. It is free admission for all those spectators who do not want to miss this magnificent and spectacular display of

Equestrian Art, and there is plenty of parking. The competition starts at 9 am until 2 pm; the afternoon programme will be from 7 pm until midnight. You can find the venue by taking the La Laguna turning off the N340 and following the signposts. There will be plenty of other attractions, with a good selection of stalls, and pick up your copy of The News on the Dodson & Horrell stand, situated near the bar.

Ever wanted to “tread the boards"? The Salon Varietes in Fuengirola is presenting a Musical Revue from October 1st to 5th. The Salon needs singers of rock, pop, classical, and standards, plus dancers of all styles. Are you a group that could perform flamenco, or are you hot at line dancing? Anything up beat and happy - then come to the Audition

which is being held on Saturday July 31st at The Salon (stage door entrance) at 12 noon . The Salon must stress that this is unpaid, and people who would like to take part need total dedication and commitment to rehearsal time. Please bring a CD or backing track with you for the audition. Call the Director, Lizz Freeman, for more information on 952 930 039 or 606 611 228.

Eddie Barnett and Football TONIGHT the birthday bash Miel” (Arroyo de la Miel’s municipal sports centre), located on Avenida Salvador Vicente in Arroyo de la Miel tonight, Wednesday July 28th, at 9 pm.Tickets are available for 5€ per person, and all the proceeds made on the night will benefit the Cudeca Hospice.

Happy Birthday La Risa Eddie Barnett’s swing rock dance night at El Potro Restaurant went down well last Saturday. Eddie, all the better for the flying weekend visit from fellow entertainer Lawrie Hart, was in fine form. The evening was enhanced by three birthday celebrations; Lizz Freeman and a large group from the Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola were there to celebrate two birthdays, John Wootton and Gina Foster. Ditte from El Potro and her Danish family were celebrating her birthday and Hayley (also from El Potro)

got a mention as it was her birthday on Monday. Happy Birthday to you all. Eddie’s and Lawrie’s show and the dining were as good as promised, and a fine night out was had by one and all. Hopefully we will see Lawrie - who is now resident in the UK - back on the coast and performing with Eddie once again sooner rather than later. For downloadable photos of a great night go to www.picasaweb.google. com/woodysfotos and open up the El Potro, Eddie Barnett and Lawrie Hart photo album.

La Risa at Lauro Golf on the road between Alhaurin el Grande and Alhaurin de la Torre will be celebrating their second birthday on Saturday July 31st. The friendly restaurant and bar will be celebrating in style with a fabulous Hog Roast plus all kinds of salads and baked potatoes. La Risa stands within the grounds of Lauro Golf and is in a lovely setting with big umbrellas to

shade you from the sun. Starting at 7.30 pm there will be live entertainment with all the songs you know and love from the 50s and 60s. Tickets cost €15 per person. Please call La Risa on 660 350 896 to book your table. Jan Byron would like to thank all customers old and new who have supported La Risa over the past two years.

As the end of summer approaches a one-day Ska and Reggae Festival will be held on the outskirts of Coin to mark the occasion with a musical big band bang. Headlined by the Costa del Sol’s Looney Toonz it will be supported by Absalut Pantz from Orgiva and Polish group Skadictator plus others. The event will begin at 2pm on Saturday August 28th with stalls, bouncy castle, artisan goods and food, with music kicking off around 5pm until 2am. DJs will support the day in between live music sets with a mixture of Northern Soul, Ska and Reggae music. Meanwhile Flavours of

Jamaica will be providing traditional food whilst Los Arcos will also be hosting their BBQ platters. Tickets are €5 in advance or €7.50 on the door (children under 12 free) and proceeds will go to charity Have a Heart which works with needy people within the Heartfm 95.7 broadcast area. Tickets are available from: Pogs Irish Bar, Heartfm studios in Alhaurin el Grande or from the venue, Los Arcos, on the A355 Coin/Cartama road. e Rebound BY BART FREUNDLICH Starring Catherine Zeta Jones, Justin Bartha Sandy (Zeta Jones) is a newly divorced superattractive "mom" who leaves the 'Burbs after the breakdown of her marriage to her cheating husband, and moves to Manhattan to make a new start with the kids. She starts a new job on a sports magazine, begins to rebuild her social life, and needs to find a

babysitter to take care of the children. And that's where young, and himself newly divorced, Aram (Bartha) comes into the picture. He has a youthful charm, and a gentle smile, and is definitely more interesting than the jaded, selfabsorbed middle-aged men Sandy is meeting as part of her re-entry to the world of

dating. So, the inevitable happens and they embark on a May to September romance. It's not Richard Curtis, and don't expect any riveting insights on life and the meaning of. It may be a formulaic rom-com littered with clichés but it is amiable, and a perfect way to pass an hour and a half of your time.

MOVIE SPOTLIGHT

Here's Johnny

Something scary, closer to home

Johnny Depp says zombies, mermaids and the "vicious and vivacious" Penelope Cruz will all feature in Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Depp, dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow, appeared in a pre-recorded filmed message at last week's annual Comic-Con convention in the States, to whet movie goers appetites for "On Stranger Tides". The movie is due for release in the States next May and will - of course - appear in 3D. It will be the first of the films not to feature Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.

couple of years ago, BBC Four ran a series of Spanish language films under the title of “Six Films to Keep You Awake”. Two of the films became instant firm favourites of mine and I have a feeling that they will haunt me (if you’ll pardon the pun) for years to come. I have probably watched them three or four times now and they both still scare the living daylights out of me. In fact, I even saw a block of flats that looked like the one featured in one of the films and it instantly brought me out in a cold sweat.

HOROSCOPE S

CULT UR E & LEISUR E

Para entrar a vivir”, or “To let” in English, is a 2006 film about a young couple looking for an apartment to rent to start a family of their own. The film is directed by Jaume Balagueró and stars Macarena Gómez and Adrià Collado as Clara and Mario, an unsuspecting couple of flat-hunters who head out to the suburbs in their search for a spacious and affordable apartment. The agent’s description of the property turns out to be somewhat lacking (aren’t they always?) and as the couple are shown around, their sense of unease becomes heightened. After realizing that they have been lured to the property by the mad woman that runs the block of flats, Mario gets a stunning bop on the head from the crazy landlady and Clara escapes from the third floor window, landing on washing lines that are just about fixed to the wall of the flat below. Breaking through the window, Clara discovers another family of would–be tenants, gagged and tied up in various tableaux around the dilapidated apartment. The twisted woman that lured them in the first place is trying to fill the flats with young families, convinced that this will restore life to

the shabby and almost derelict building. As Clara tries to escape, she discovers that not all of those tied up are hapless victims…

La habitación del niño” will do for baby monitors, what Psycho did for shower curtains. Called “The baby’s room” in English, this tense thriller starts with a young couple moving into an old house that is in need of restoration. Making use of an old baby listening monitor that they have been given, Sonia and Juan are horrified to hear adult voices in their son’s room in the middle of the night. Convinced by the police that there have been no intruders, the next morning they decide that the old monitor must be picking up local radio broadcasts and so they invest in a state of the art video version, complete with bedside screen for the parents. Their peace of mind is however shattered when the monitor apparently shows someone in the bedroom with their newborn child. Juan runs in to his son’s room brandishing a knife, just in time to be caught on the monitor by his wife, as he looks menacingly at his son’s bed. As the parents struggle to fight real and imagined demons, Juan loses his grip on reality and finds himself swapping places with the spectre, crossing boundaries into an alternative reality and leaving Sonia with the real demon disguised as Juan.

I

’m not the bravest of souls when it comes to watching horror films. I do tend to stick my fingers in my ears to block out ‘tension building music’ and I have been known to scream at all the appropriate places in your average horror but there is definitely something uber-creepy about both of these films.

When you come from the heart it sends out ripples of love, there is so much that you want to do, even if it is just reading a book, you will be cramming as much in as possible in one day. There is a drive in you to accomplish, be productive and make things happen. Perhaps there are things in the home that need looking at, anything from decorating to deciding about a move could be on the cards. Just remember that being daring at the moment will allow you to feel free enough to take risks without conflict. There are great opportunities to start anew, even though you prefer building on what you already have. Circumstances have not made that possible in one area of your life but there is a new playing field being presented. Financial concerns may hold you back from being creatively forthcoming along with fears of survival. However, there are pleasant surprises ahead and unusual interactions lead to romance - by the weekend you will be swimming in a sea of love. A week when working for what you want gets you what you want. Even when there are walls of resistance put in front of you, this only makes you more determined and stronger in your plight to knock them down, to get to the other side. This is all about putting your money where your mouth is and this simple act of motion will free any fear and generate fast results. As you approach the weekend make sure that the details are sorted out. There is a lot to worry about but there is even more to celebrate. This is a new beginning for you and life is taken to a brand new level allowing you to shine. It is a time to put yourself out there in the world in a way you haven’t for many years. If you have an idea and it seems crazy, share it – it is your craziness that gets you on in life. By the weekend clear communication coupled with an unerring command of the details leaves you in little doubt about where your life is heading. Your past is staring you straight in the face this week and you will decide that there will be no going back down that road again. Time spent dancing in the same old way is time spent lost as far as you are concerned. It is time to face the music, rewrite the future, one that is free from the old stories and rich with a welcome heartfelt change. Move into unknown territory and your instincts will guide you through the rest. Don’t put limitations on the way you think - if you think small that is what you get, if you think big then you get big. It is hard at the moment not to think about all that is breaking down or wearing out. While many things are breaking down there is a lot that is working. A friend is going to make all the difference in the world to your current state of affairs, like an angel sent to sort it all out and bring a little happiness to your life.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Swedish Style Hash (Pytt i panna) Ingredients:

(serves 6)

● 600gr potatoes peeled ● 25gr butter ● Sunflower oil ● 2 medium onions finely, chopped ● 2 tbsp flat leaf parsley, chopped ● 250gr pack unsmoked back bacon, roughly chopped ● 3 cooked sausages, sliced ● 4 eggs ● Sweet pickled beetroot to serve – optional

Method ● Cut the potatoes into neat cubes, about 1cm square. Heat half the butter and 1tbsp sunflower oil in a large frying pan and fry the potatoes for 10 minutes until golden. Cover the pan and continue cooking until the potatoes are soft, shaking them occasionally to stop them sticking.

● Meanwhile, heat the remaining butter and 1tbsp oil in another pan and fry the onions for 5-8 minutes until soft and golden. Add the onions to the potatoes, then add the parsley. Set aside and keep warm. ● Heat 1tbsp in the onion pan and quickly fry the bacon until crisp, toss in the

sausages and heat through, then stir into the potato. ● Season with salt and pepper if needed. Fry the eggs in a little oil then serve immediately with the eggs on top of the potato mixture. Serve with some pickled beetroot on the side if you fancy it.

SPANISH POCO A POCO By Valerie Mitchell

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

by Cathy Stronach

Thanks to a recent visit from friends I realised it might be a good idea to look at the various ways of ordering coffee, tea and so on. It is a bit more complex than one might imagine. First - coffee. If you drink black coffee, you have two options : Café solo which is a small very strong black coffee Café americano which is a shot of coffee topped up with boiling water. For white coffee one can order a café con leche - coffee with milk and you will get about half and half coffee and milk. However, the Spanish have many variations on the proportion of coffee to milk. The most common are : Un café cortado is coffee with just a smidge of milk Un mitad is about half and half - similar to café con leche Una sombra is about a quarter coffee and three quarters hot milk Una nube is about 10 per cent coffee topped up with hot milk Then if you want to have a shot of brandy in the coffee you ask for Un carajillo de cognac. And if, like many Spanish men, you like anis in coffee that is un carajillo de anis. Simple so far? Tea is sometimes made here by putting a tea bag in a cup of hot milk. Not my idea of a nice cuppa but then each to their own. A cup of tea which involves boiling water and a tea bag is Un té de agua and you may need to say Con un poquito de leche - with a little milk. Herbal tea is Una infusion Una infusion de manzanilla is a camomile tea Una infusion de menta is Mint tea. In two weeks time we'll have a look at ordering alcoholic drinks.

Health&Beauty RESEARCH

Regular use of a mobile phone could increase the risk of tinnitus, which involves constant ringing or buzzing in the ear, according to a small Austrian study. unknown. The researchers said the evidence so far linking mobiles with tinnitus was anecdotal, but that their small study suggested at the very least it warranted further investigation. Because of the widespread use of the devices, even a slightly increased risk would be of "public health importance", they said, particularly given that the condition can in some

cases profoundly interfere with daily life. It is thought about 10% of the population have some form of tinnitus, but it is unclear whether the condition is becoming more prevalent. A spokesman for the British Tinnitus Association said the association between tinnitus and electromagnetic fields is not a new idea with electromagnetic fields

Sunscreen myths

Some researchers blame sunscreens for encouraging people to believe that it's safe to stay in the sun for prolonged periods, as long as you're slathered in SPF. They also point to steadily rising skin-cancer rates as proof of sunscreen's relatively poor performance. But dermatologists say it's people's behaviour, not their sun protection, that is to blame. They say sunscreens can prevent skin cancer, but need to be part of an overall protection programme – like staying out of the sun from 10 am to 4 pm, wearing protective clothing, and seeking shade whenever possible.

“There may be dangerous nanoparticles lurking in your sun protection.” In order to turn the normally opaque natural sunscreen ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide into sheer coverage for your skin, they are sometimes engineered into tiny, nano-size particles so minuscule that some scientists fear they can penetrate skin, get into the bloodstream, and potentially damage your organs. But the experts say it has never been proven that they do any actual harm to your body, but some dermatologists advise caution. They say it is best to avoid them by sticking to well-known sunscreen brands, which generally don't contain

being put forward both as a cause and treatment for tinnitus. He said it was an interesting study but pointed out that there were a number of complex factors underlying tinnitus which had not been addressed in the study. He stressed that the link between mobile phone use remains unproven with further work still needed.

A European study of almost 400,000 adults found that eating meat was linked with weight gain, even in people taking in the same number of calories. The strongest association was found with processed meat, such as sausages and ham, the Imperial College London team reported. The study counters the theory that diets with high amounts of protein and low amounts of carbohydrate promote weight loss. The researchers said their findings also support public health messages advocating cutting down on the amount of meat we eat. The study looked at data from adults taking part in a large project looking at the link between diet and cancer. Participants from 10

European countries, including the UK, were weighed and measured at the start and then asked to report their weight five years later. They also filled in a detailed food questionnaire. Overall, the researchers found that meat consumption was associated with weight gain in both men and women. Although it is not clear why meat would lead to weight gain in people eating the same number of calories, one theory is that energydense foods like meat alter how the body regulates appetite control. There could also be another lifestyle or dietary explanation for the link that was not accounted for by the study.

Mobiles linked to tinnitus risk Researchers from the Medical University of Vienna recruited 100 people with the condition and 100 without, and compared mobile phone use. They found tinnitus was over 70% more likely in those averaging 10 minutes' daily phone use. Intense noise, head trauma and certain drugs are all known to increase the risk of the ear condition, but in many cases the reasons are

them.

“You shouldn't wear sunscreen because it filters out good-for-you vitamin D.” Many dermatologists believe this is a notion perpetuated primarily by the indoor-tanning industry, which stands to profit from people using tanning machines to boost their vitamin D. The fact is that sunscreens can lower vitamin D production, but you can easily make up for this loss with food sources (salmon, fortified milk, etc.), vitamins, or even the most trivial amounts of sunlight, the dermatologists say, adding that it's still much safer to get your vitamin D from a pill than to stay in the sun without protection.

“Antioxidants make better sun protection.” Antioxidants such as green tea and darkred fruits may be able to mitigate only a little of the damage that sunscreens miss. For example, green tea offers some UV protection, but studies have mostly looked at 100 percent green tea applied topically, not how well it works incorporated into a cream. The experts say antioxidants make great supplements to sunscreen but they are not officially recognised as sunscreen actives and should not replace broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreens.

Vaccine patch developed US researchers have developed a vaccine patch that could cut out the need for needles. Tests in mice show that the patch – which has hundreds of microscopic needles that dissolve into the skin - may even produce a better immune response than a conventional jab. If proven to be effective in further trials, the patch would mean an end to the need for medical training to deliver

vaccines and turn vaccination into a painless procedure that people could do themselves. The researchers said it could also simplify large-scale vaccination during a pandemic. They said they hoped to test the patch in human trials within the next couple of years.

People&Fashion Sales soar after Becks confesses all

CELEBRITY SPOT

Brit stars shine in the US A star studded collection of British acting talent is making a big showing in this year's Emmy Awards - US television's answer to the Oscars. Popular BBC 1 period drama Cranford has been nominated in seven categories - including best actress for Dame Judi Dench, best supporting actor for Jonathan Pryce and out standing mini-series. The show has already been an Emmy hit - it picked up three awards in 2008. Michael Sheen has earned a best actor nomination for his portrayal of Tony Blair in The Special Relationship - a US-

BBC co-production which looks at the Blair friendship with former president Bill Clinton. It will be broadcast on BBC 2 in the autumn and it's the third time that Sheen has played Blair. Other British talent in the running are Sir Ian McKellen for his role in the remake of The Prisoner, Dame Maggie Smith for the drama Capturing Mary, Sir Michael Gambon for the BBC adaptation of Jane Austen's

Emma and Sir Patrick Stewart for the televised Hamlet, in which former Dr Who David Tennant played the Prince of Denmark. Hugh Laurie has picked up his fifth nomination for House and even celebrity chef Jamie Oliver gets in on the act- his Food Revolution, in which he looked at obesity in the US, has been nominated for best reality show. The awards ceremony will take place on August 29th.

When David Beckham was living in Madrid he was often spotted at the capital's leading nightclubs. But the father of three has put those days behind him now and his chosen entertainment is to spend hours poring over his Lego blocks. His revelation on the last ever Friday Night with Jonathan Ross last week has sent internet sales soaring for the Taj Mahal kit, and the company has now given him and the family carte blanche to visit the Lego HQ in Denmark. David admitted that while he was in Italy playing for AC Milan he spent hours off the pitch constructing the Lego model . The 5,922 piece kit, costing $300

dollars, is only available online on the company's internet site. And after Becks - who also confessed that wife Victoria is listed on his mobile phone under P for Posh - revealed his passion for putting it together sales rocketed by 663 per cent in just one day. He said too that he would love to design Lego kits and the company has asked him to send in any proposals he has for new models. The footballer still has designs on pulling on an England shirt once more - but maybe there is a new post-football career beckoning.

Land Rover most unreliable car They are designed to overcome the worst off-road conditions nature can throw at them. But it seems Land Rovers are struggling to cope with the more everyday hazards of the school run and commuting. The models are today named by consumer group Which? as the nation's most unreliable cars. The Land Rover Discovery 3, which costs up to £46,000, is named the most unreliable car on the road.

Alonso to base ”This is ridiculous. ” Well he certainly got that right, but Alonso made no friends with his outburst over the team radio as once again the Spaniard courted controversy. Ferrari were fined $100,000 for breaching sporting regulations but the result was allowed to stand by the FIA. The pitlane was still alive with suggestions the Italian team breached the ban on team orders long after the chequered flag had dropped at the German grand prix, won by Fernando Alonso ahead of Felipe Massa. But the stewards’ investigation only followed a pitlane and paddock furore, and an FIA press conference described as downright “hostile” by one observer. Alonso was asked by one reporter if his 2010 success would now be a “dirty championship”. But BBC pundits David Coulthard and Martin Brundle said it was Ferrari’s handling of the team order that was the problem, with Lotus’ Mike Gascoyne admitting the team handled it “stupidly”. After a team onetwo, and soaked in

champagne, Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali was hounded in the Hockenheim pitlane by reporters accusing him of illegally ordering Felipe Massa to hand his victory to

that he can get away with it.

Felipe Massa a clear run into turn 1 to take the lead,

How the race should have finished with Massa ahead

Fernando Alonso. “This is not true,” Italian Domenicali told an infuriated Eddie Jordan on the BBC. Jordan has been a real coup for the BBC, as he asks the questions everyone wants to ask and the fact that he knows everyone involved in the sport so well means

Apart from the start and half of the first lap at Hockenheim, Pole sitter Sebastian Vettel - perhaps too intent on pushing Fernando Alonso towards the wall, something he seems intent on doing at every start - got it wrong big time by allowing

Alonso tucked in to second and Vettel third. And that’s how it looked like staying until the lap 47 message to Massa: “OK, so, Fernando is faster than you. Can you confirm that message?” Lap 49 exiting the Turn 6 hairpin Massa exited slower than normal and Alonso got past to take first place - the intentions were blatantly clear to all. What followed was the team

radio comments by Smedley - lap 49 message to Massa: “Alright. Good one. Just stick with him now. Sorry.” Message to Massa on the slow down lap: “Well done mate. Good lad. Felipe Massa is back, back in business. It was a great result and you were very, very, very magnanimous. You will have no idea what that word means, I will explain it to you later.” Red Bull’s Christian Horner, earlier accused by his rivals of running an illegallyflexing front wing on the RB6 in Germany, said the FIA stewards should actually be probing Ferrari’s alleged rules breach. “I have to say that is the clearest team order I’ve ever seen. It will be interesting to see what the stewards make of it because for me it was as clear as 2002, which is why the rule was

brought in. It’s wrong for the sport,” said the Briton, referring to the Austrian grand prix of that year, when then Ferrari team boss Jean Todt ordered Rubens Barrichello aside for Michael Schumacher. Fascinatingly, Todt is now president of the governing FIA. Schumacher, who greatly benefitted from team orders during his tenure at Ferrari, said he is still very close to his former teammate Massa, but admitted he would have done “exactly the same” if he had been sitting on the pitwall on Sunday. “In principle I fully accept it (team orders). There is only one target: winning the title,” said the seven times world champion. Well he would wouldn’t he, given his track record of how he treats other drivers.

“Hurricane”on silver screen? Film makers are hoping to turn snooker player Alex Higgins’ life into a drama, spanning his boyhood to his untimely death at 61. They would draw on the twice World Champion’s autobiography “From The Eye of A Hurricane”. Higgins, a heavy smoker, had been battling throat cancer for a decade and was found dead in his flat in Belfast on Saturday. He had said he wanted to be buried near drinking chum and fellow roisterer Oliver Reed in Co. Cork.

Contador three Cavendish five Langer finally lifts As Alberto Contador crossed the line on the Champs Elysees to seal his third win in four years Mark Cavendish was already celebrating his fifth stage victory in this year’s tour. On his way to the finish line of a long and tiring Tour de France, the Spanish rider Alberto Contador let his success sink in. He cruised along in the usual processional Stage 20 on Sunday, holding up two fingers and a thumb for the cameras, in recognition of his third Tour victory in four years. He sipped Champagne, laughed and even broke out a tiny blue squirt gun to soak the riders and

cameramen around him. The victory came after three weeks and more than 2,200 miles punishing his body: “You cannot imagine how relieved I am because there was so much pressure and so much tension on my shoulders,” Contador said, adding that it has been his dream to win the Tour ever since he started riding a bike. Once again, though, Contador was able to handle that stress and —

once again — he was able to beat Andy Schleck, the rider from Luxembourg. Schleck, the runner-up last year, finished second, 39 seconds back. Denis Menchov, from Russia, was third, 2 minutes 1 second back. Cavendish was equally delighted: “You have got to be happy with just one stage win at the Tour de France," said the 25-yearold from the Isle of Man. "It is the hardest and biggest bike race in the

world and you have to show respect for it. After the first week it was looking further and further away but the team kept going. They didn't change the plan or give up, they put the general classification chances on hold and we finally got the first win. "Today is the pinnacle. For me it is the most beautiful finish in the world, an icon of the sport, and to win it is pretty spectacular.”

Bernhard Langer, twice runner-up in the Open Championship and third on four other occasions, has finally won a major links title. Langer shot a final round of 72 to clinch his first senior major with a one-shot win in the Senior British Open. The 52-year-old German, who had been leading from day one, began the final round with a three-shot advantage, but US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin had cut the gap to just one shot. Langer opted for a cautious approach at the formidable 18th at Carnoustie, scene of Jean van de Velde's disastrous seven at the 1999 Open. His three-wood finished dangerously close to the Barry Burn, but after laying up into the centre of the fairway, he hit a solid shot to the centre of the green and having lagged his first putt he tapped in from 18 inches

with his broomhandle putter as Pavin could only make par. Langer’s win ends a run of eight successive American victories. “This ranks pretty close to my two US Masters and some of the Ryder Cups I've been involved in,"said Langer. "I've always wanted to win the Open Championship, I probably never will now but this is the next best thing.” Ian Woosnam was the best placed Britain, coming in in 8th spot.

Sport SPOTLIGHT Casey Stoner's MotoGP winless streak has grown to ten races after a second FOOTBALL place finish in Sunday's US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca - Pedrosa crashes out Count me out:

Lorenzo builds a massive title lead

DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again The European Tour this week moved on to Stockholm for the Nordea Scandinavian Masters at the impressive new course Bro Hoff Slott.G.C.. Commendably, Open winner Oosthuizen played in the event, having committed to do so before his Open triumph and started the week in the same vein, being only one shot off the lead going into the last day. The scoring was so tight that there were eight or nine players in the frame to win the event and until the turn that remained the case. Belgium’s Nicholas Colsaerts had played the best over the front nine turning in 30 shots but sadly dropped four strokes on the inward nine. Korean K.J.Choi was compiling a very steady round until a disastrous nine at the par – five 15th undid all his good work. Home favourite Richard S. Johnson was leading the way with Rafa Echenique of Argentina and Edoardo Molinari - the Champions from Loch Lomond two weeks ago. Going up the last Johnson needed a birdie to win and made it with a fantastic 35 foot putt. Back over in Scotland the Senior Tour staged the Senior British Open at Carnoustie. This very demanding course, that many consider the most difficult on the Open roster, had been relatively benign all week but the leader by three shots was Bernhard Langer from Corey Pavin, Langer being on minus 6. But the U.S Ryder Cup captain Pavin could not get closer than to within one shot of Langer who although bogeying the last hole held on for a level par 72 to claim his first links title. Till next time Keep your head down Dave.

After Valentino Rossi's legbreaking accident at Mugello, Sunday's US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca might well have produced the second defining moment in the 2010 MotoGP title chase. Jorge Lorenzo arrived in America with a reduced 47 point lead over Dani Pedrosa, who looked to be in with an excellent chance of claiming his third victory of the season as he led the first eleven laps of the race. But Lorenzo was getting closer and closer and was almost within striking distance of Pedrosa by lap 12 of 32, when the Honda rider suddenly lost the front of his RCV and crashed out of the lead. It was a pivotal moment, being the first time either rider had crashed out of a race this season. Rossi returned to the MotoGP podium just seven weeks after breaking his leg, with a hard fought third

New 25-man squad rule will leave players in the cold They will still be collecting pay packets of £50,000, or more every week, but they will spend match day sat in the stands. That's the bizarre effect of the League's new 25-man squad rule as it starts to bite at the clubs who have thrown fortunes at players.Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said on Monday former England defender Jonathan Woodgate won't get a place in his plans for the season, and that illustrated a problem haunting all the major clubs.
