WORLD What a scorcher...!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

Last week I was wrong – it indeed did get even hotter and more humid. We have a thermometer in the garden that goes up to 50ºC and it had gone through the 50 and had even broken up the mercury in it so, who knows how hot it was in my garden this time last week. still, as one of our readers said – we're half way through august so it won't be long before we get the cold and the rain back again! however, at least some good has come from the searing heat. I have spent so much time in my pool that, along with my rabbit food diet, I've lost a few inches which, as I seriously needed to, can't be bad. the weekend took its toll on the diet however and I have to confess to a lapse in the chocky doghnut and hot chocolate fudge cake department – both on saturday – and I'd been doing so well too! On saturday morning we went to the Medieval Fayre at sohail Castle in Fuengirola via Marbella as the road's still closed. We parked the car at the bottom of the hill leading to the castle at about 11am then trudged all the way up to the top in the heat only to find that the fayre didn't start until 6pm. Needless to say, when I suggested to a small rotund man who was in charge that it might be a good idea to put a notice at the bottom of the hill giving the time, I got the ever present spanish shrug – GRRRRR!

Storm clouds gather over La Linea The forces building up against the mayor were joined by the Spanish ferry line Transcoma, which has launched a promotion offering an alternative to La Linea’s controversial congestion charge. While the charge is nowhere near becoming a reality yet, the company is wasting no time. On Saturday it started distributing a new leaflet advertising a £5 return ticket, giving Gib visitors the option to go via hassle-free Algeciras.

Spanish name and blue eyes from a Scottish grandfather. He was an aerobatics champion of Spain, an experienced aerial photographer and author of several books.

Tourism laps up water resources

Kashmir avalanche victim identified A body found in the tourist enclave of Leh in the Kashmir has been identified as Lourdes Morro ( above) by a friend, according to the El Mundo newspaper. The body was found shortly after an avalanche swept down the mountains behind the Leh valley on August 6th after heavy rains flooded the area, cutting off hundreds

of trekkers and climbers, including 140 Spaniards. Most of them were located and flown to New Delhi where they caught planes home. The friend who identified Sra Morro is a member of the FrancoSpanish rescue mission that was searching for her and two French skiers who disappeared in the avalanche.

Meanwhile on the Rock itself, the government has adopted a “wait-and-see” attitude. In a statement, it said on Saturday that the La Linea mayor was "clearly engaged in a political manoeuvre with his central government, which is unlikely to allow the proposal to go ahead. In the meantime, Gibraltarians should not allow themselves to be wound up by him."

In just the first two weeks of August, the number of visitors to the Costa del Sol has used the amount of water in the reservoirs by the equivalent of a three month's supply. However, the Junta de Andalucia's environment councillor, Remedios Martel, said this was not a cause for alarm because last winter's rains had raised water levels to levels not seen for at least five years. She added that during that drier period, residents had learned to use the water supply more rationally and appeared to be continuing this good habit.

Back in the UK, Ashley Fox, MEP for South West of England & Gibraltar, has written to the press about the developments in La Linea, drawing attention to the harassment threatened against the residents of the Rock.

WEEKLY WEATHER FORECAST FOR COSTA DEL SOL

In her letter, she said: “The cash strapped Mayor of La Linea, the Spanish town immediately across the border, has come up with a new scheme targeting the people of Gibraltar. He is proposing to levy a charge on all people entering and leaving the former colony, with the exception of Spanish workers.” “This is a clear breach of EU law which enshrines the concept of the Freedom of Movement of Labour throughout the EU. This is obviously yet another attempt to distract local attention from the financial problems of La Linea by blaming all troubles on Gibraltar. The Mayor of La Linea needs to focus on fixing his own problems rather than looking for a scapegoat that doesn’t exist.” “The people of Gibraltar need our support to face this latest threat to their economic and political independence. Gibraltar may be separated by geography but its people are British, and as such, deserve the same rights that we all enjoy including the ability to cross a border without harassment.”

Spain’s tax rates are too low warns Minister Development minister José Blanco said during an interview with the Europa Press news agency at the weekend that taxes in Spain are very low and should be raised to the same level as the rest of the EU. Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero spoke several weeks ago about the possibility of raising taxes for the highest paid, and Sr Blanco said that full details of the rise would be

given during the parliamentary debate on the 2011 Budget next month. Only the Portuguese and the Greeks pay lower taxes than the Spanish.

Strike threat called off

The air controllers' union and the Spanish Airports Authority have reached an agreement late last week on salaries and working hours. The controllers started calling in sick after they

were told several weeks ago that they would no longer be paid triple pay for overtime. One newspaper reported that some were earning as much as €400,000 a year under that

First ever study into fire setting Sixty percent of the 20,000 forest fires that devastate huge areas of the country every year are set deliberately but only 1% of the pyromaniacs are identified. According to a study by the Guardia Civil, the typical pyromaniac is a male aged between 30 and 58, an unskilled worker who earns less that €600 a month. He either lives alone or with his parents in a rural area, is a

substance abuser – especially of alcohol, although he doesn’t usually set the fires while drunk. He has no clear motive for setting fires, has no accomplices and often has a police record. He usually has a low IQ or suffers from mental problems. It is the first study of its kind in Spain and is based on information obtained from the 35 pyromaniacs who are currently serving time.

August” which caused many holidaymakers to think twice before booking flights. They will now earn €200,000 a year working an average of 1,670 hours a year.

interior Minister to visit Morocco After a week of rising tensions on the border between Melilla and Morocco, the Interior Ministry announced on Saturday that Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba will visit Rabat on August 23rd to meet his Moroccan counterpart in a bid to end the crisis. By Monday, the situation at the border had quietened down because no women police officers were on duty that day. There have been several complaints in the past few days of police brutality at the border, with the women police attracting the most fire. Some observers believe the root of the problem is cultural - Moroccan men resent being ordered about by women police.

Tokyo jewel heist suspect extradited The Spanish authorities have extradited an alleged member of a gang of international jewel thieves known as the Pink Panther gang to Japan in connection with the 2007 theft of a tiara and other jewels from a jewellery shop in Tokyo. Queen Sophia takes the wheel.

Electric car sales off target Queen Sophia showed off her green credentials and was snapped at the wheel of her new electric car in Palma de Mallorca on the same day it became known that only 16 have been sold in Spain. This was way short of the 2,000 electric cars that the government announced would be on the road by the end of this year. The government-backed REVE electric car and wind power project said 15 cars had been sold so far this year, in addition to one last

year. In April, the government said it would invest €590 million in the production of electric cars, with the aim of putting 250,000 electric and hybrid vehicles on the roads by 2014. A REVE spokesman played down the poor sales: "The figures are

Rifat Hadziahmetovic, 42, from Montenegro, was being held in Spain in connection with other charges. The Pink Panther gang is said to have up to 200 members, many from former Yugoslavia. It has been blamed for raids on some 120 luxury

shops in more than 20 countries - as far afield as the US, Japan, Switzerland and the UAE - over the past few years. Interpol has been co-ordinating the work of several police forces to try to catch the gang's members. Police say the Pink Panthers have a less formal structure

than most gangs, but can be ruthless, with links to murders and drug trafficking. They are known for the creativity of their heists, using bicycles to escape through the heavy Tokyo traffic in the 2007 robbery, and a speedboat for a robbery in southern France.

French town offers to save corridas Raymond Couderc, the mayor of Béziers, in the south of France, has offered the town’s bullring to stage the bullfights that will not be held in Catalonia, once the

corrida ban comes into effect on January 1st, 2012. In a statement last week, he said: “Beziers has a bullfighting tradition, it is geographically close to Catalonia and our bullring

is big enough to stage the important bullfights normally held in the Barcelona ring.” He said he hoped to discuss the proposal with Barcelona’s bullfighting clubs “soon”.

Vandals attack statue

EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News

editorial@thenewsonline.es

The Mexican embassy has condemned the “act of intolerable and unjustifiable vandalism” against the statue of Conquistador Hernan Cortes in Medellin, Badajoz province, which had red paint thrown at it last week. A group calling itself Anonymous Citizens claimed responsibility. The group said the statue represented “the cruel glorification and arrogance of the genocide” perpetrated by the Spaniards against the indigenous Indians of Latin America, and called it “an insult to the people of Mexico”. What particularly enraged the group was that Cortes has a foot on top of the head of an Aztec. A spokesman for Medellin town council said the head came from one of the many statues the Spaniards found in the temples where human sacrifices were routinely carried out. The cultural chargé d’affaires at the Mexican embassy, Jaime Manuel del Arenal, said the statue was not an

insult and anyone who saw it as such “was denying history”, adding that “Mexico is proud of its double indigence and Spanish legacies”. Hernan Cortes was born in Medellin in 1485. At age 19, he went to Santo Domingo in 1505, where he lived for seven years; in 1511 he took part in the conquest of Cuba, becoming mayor of Santiago de Cuba. In 1519, he persuaded the Spanish governor of Cuba into letting him lead an expedition to Mexico, which had been discovered by the Spanish explorer de Córdoba a year before. At that time, Montezuma II ruled the Aztec empire from his base in Tenochtitlán, today’s Mexico City. Cortés arrived

in Mexico in March 1519 with a group of about 600 men and a few horses. On his way to Tenochtitlán, he made friends with the Tlaxcalans, enemies of the Aztecs, who helped him conquer them. The Aztecs, believing Cortés was a god-king, treated him and his soldiers well, but drove him away in June 1520. Cortés returned

a year later, captured Tenochtitlán and began to build Mexico City on the Aztec ruins. He encouraged people to emigrate there from Spain and it soon became the most important Spanish city in North America. Cortes was made governor and captain general of New Spain in 1523. He returned to Spain in 1539, and died near Seville in 1547.

Dam will flood pilgrims' road

GIRONA. A 60-year-old French tourist was seriously injured last week when he was hit by lightning on a beach before he could reach his car to shelter from the storm. People nearby alerted the Red Cross lifeguard and the man was taken to the nearest hospital. A Spanish holidaymaker suffered minor burns when he was hit by lightning at a Valencia beach.

NAVARRA. The raising of the level of the Yesa dam near the border with Aragon, which has been given the go-ahead, will flood the 4.2 kilometres of the pilgrim's road to Santiago de Compostela. The project was first proposed in 1992 but was met with opposition from people living in the area and environmentalists. The dam has been in service since 1959.

Firemen die in blaze

More banned from casinos

GALICIA. Two firemen from Pontevedra died last week in one of several fires which have been ravaging the region since the beginning of August.

MADRID. The 2009 Annual Gambling Report shows that the number of people banned from casinos or bingo halls rose to 48,905 last year, a 38% increase over the 35,300 who were barred in 2008. Judges issue the bans at the request of gamblers' families or the gamblers themselves. Andalucia has the most banned gamblers (17,099) while Castilla-La Mancha has the fewest (87).

Given the high risk of more forest fires in the area, the Defence Ministry sent 170 soldiers from the fifth battalion of the Emergency Military Unit (UME) to the area over the weekend to reinforce local resources.

be balloted on the new offer, with the result likely to be announced in about three weeks. Transport Secretary Philip Hammond welcomed the settlement and said a strike over the August Bank Holiday period "would have been hugely damaging to the country".

The wild elephant population has dropped to about 4,000 as people take over land used by the animals as corridors. Last year the conflict between humans and nondomesticated elephants saw the deaths of 50 people and 228 elephants. The secretary of the vets' union, Vijitha Perera, told reporters they were not satisfied with the government's attempts to address the issue. He said cattle were encroaching on elephant ranges, eating their food sources and using their water. Nonnative trees, useless for

food, were being introduced and some of the animals were going deaf as people let off firecrackers to scare them. He said about four elephants were being killed every week. Government directorgeneral of wildlife Ananda Wijesooriya said some remedial measures had been taken, such as moving orphaned elephants from sanctuaries to bigger parks and monitoring to see if they integrate with the wild herds. He said the vets had refused to hold discussions with him, saying they wanted to speak to the minister.

World Bank to lend Pakistan $900m The World Bank is to loan $900 million to Pakistan to help it recover from its worst ever flooding. A World Bank spokesman said the funds will be channelled through the reprogramming of planned projects and the reallocation of money. He told a press conference: "We are reprioritising to make the funds immediately available." But the UN said international aid has been slow and that it has raised only a third of the $460m needed for emergency relief. A spokeswoman for Care International said the UN had to do more to convince donors that the money was "not going to go to the hands of the Taliban". Pakistan's High Commissioner to Britain, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, said it could take five years and $15bn for the country to recover. He warned that a failure to provide sufficient relief and rebuilding assistance could lead to an increase in extremism and

Pakistan’s devastating floods have affected up to 20 million people

instability in the wider region. He called for a new Marshall Plan, referring to the extensive US development programme in Europe after World War II. The devastating floods have affected up to 20 million people and left some 2,000 dead. Health officials have warned that disease could spread quickly among the millions

of displaced people and that 3.5m children are at risk. Maurizio Giuliano, of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), warned that Pakistan would face "a second wave of deaths" from water-borne diseases and food shortages unless more aid arrived soon. He estimated the number of people at risk from such diseases was six million.

Public spending to be 'refocused' Chancellor George Osborne has said public spending will be refocused on areas that will boost the UK's long-term economic success. He told City analysts that Britain can put its economy back on the road to recovery without sacrificing growth or becoming an unfair society: "We are shaping the economy of the future by promoting a progrowth agenda. We are shaping the big society of the future by decentralising power and empowering people. We are shaping the public services of the future by reforming the public sector so it delivers value for money.” The chancellor added that the government intended to be ruthless with waste, inefficiency and bureaucracy. What was important was how money was spent, rather than how much, he said. His comments came as new figures showed inflation is rising much faster than most people's pay.

TOKYO. Japanese authorities have been unable to find more than 281 people who had been listed in records as 100 years old or older – a blow for a country that boasts of having many of the world’s oldest people. The search began after police found the 111-year-old body of a man mummified in his bed, dead for more than three decades.

VENICE. Giorgia Boscolo, 24, whose father was also a gondolier, has become the first female gondolier after passing a year-long series of practical and written tests. She can now guide tourists through the canals – but only when a male colleague wants to take a day off from the lucrative job of rowing tourists. Fares start from €40 for a 20-minute ride.

Although Cheuk Woon-yee was not seriously hurt, Hong Kong pulled out of the competition. The remaining games were played in the city of Maracay, west of Caracas.

BRASILIA. The United States and Brazil have signed an agreement converting $21m of Brazilian debt into a fund to protect tropical ecosystems. Instead of paying back the debt, Brazil will use the money to conserve its Atlantic coastal rainforest, as well as the Cerrado and Caatinga ecosystems. All three are under threat from severe deforestation, but receive much less attention than the Amazon.

Some 50 policemen moved in as silently as possible at 8.30 in the morning to avoid giving the owners time to remove the birds. They had received anonymous calls from residents tired of the noise and the dirt. After the raids, teams of council

The birds were taken away in individual sacks and taken on trucks belonging to the Parque Zoosanitario (Animal health park) to several animal protection centres. Cock fighting, which is illegal, is a very lucrative business with some birds worth as much as €2,000.

Hottest night of the year The highest minimum night temperatures since 1942 were registered in Malaga province last Thursday, with the mercury hovering from between 31º to 38º in Malaga city itself and several towns around the province. The culprit was the hot terral wind from North Africa but the cooler levante wind moved in by Friday and brought temperatures down by 5º. The rains forecast for the Mediterranean seaboard from Tuesday on were brought in by a cold front sweeping down from the north of Europe which reduced maximum and minimum temperatures across the country by up to 10º.

The first bullfight of this year's feria was cancelled when veterinarians at La Malagueta bullring rejected 14 of the bulls from the Ribera de Campocerrado breeder, who in turn refused to replace them to avoid having to return the entrance tickets. This had never happened in Malaga before, although a similar incident happened in Seville in 1969. An inside source at the bullring said the bulls were not good enough for a first class fight, although the bullfighters contracted

for that day – Manolo Sanchez, Cesar Jimenenz and Oliva Soto – do not figure among the country's best bullfighters. Meanwhile, during the first weekend of the feria police arrested 11 youths

involved in street fighting in which seven people were injured, none of them seriously. By midweek, rain was expected but not enough to dampen the spirits of the revellers.

Best climate in Europe? During the recent hot spell, the temperature at Torrox has been 10 degrees below the provincial average which, according to the local council, merely confirms the town's slogan for tourists - “the best climate in Europe”. Two years ago, the council compared the town's climate with that of cities in Andalucia, Portugal, Greece and Turkey and reached the conclusion that because its average

temperatures were generally lower than elsewhere, it did have the best climate in Europe. Tourism councillor José Perez pointed out that the average summer temperature is rarely above 28ºC while the winter one hardly ever falls below 18ºC. He said: “This proves that our slogan is not just a slogan but a reality, as people living in Torrox well know, because they live it.”

The device consists of a tube fitted with an Archimedes screw that traps solid and viscous material while letting the water through. It is small enough to be taken on board any boat and can work for 24 hours powered by a simple hydraulic engine. While the device is aimed principally at lumps of tar from oil spills, Sr Barranco said it could also be used against jellyfish, an increasing menace along the Mediterranean coastline. He said he was looking for a company to manufacture the device because he did not have the financial resources to do it himself.

Election nightmare ahead

A mouse who wants to roar

I

C

It looks as if elections of one kind or another are going to be dominating the headlines for months to come. The Socialists will be holding primaries in September to decide who will run against Madrid premier Esperanza Aguirre and Madrid mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon. The Catalan regional elections are slated for November while the local and most regional elections will be held next May.

M

eanwhile, the long-suffering general public will be bombarded with the results of opinion polls – which the political parties play down when they're not favourable, but take notice of them when they are.

F

or example, Sr Zapatero has always said that it's elections that put a government in power, not polls. That has been his stock reply when the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, has pointed out how well it's doing in the polls. However, he now seems to believe the results of an internal party poll which shows that his candidate for the Madrid regional election – Health minister Trinidad Jimenez – is well ahead of her rival Tomas Gomez. Of course, Gomez's backers have called that poll a “dirty manoeuvre”.

J

imenez herself also seems to believe the poll results, but she may be treading on dangerous ground. The polls that Zapatero pooh-poohed in the past all showed that an increasing number of Spaniards don't trust Zapatero and don't want him to run in the next election. It's also common knowledge that Jimenez was the one who pulled Zapatero out of the hat in 2000 and helped him become the party's general secretary. The polls also show that a fair percentage of the people who voted Socialist the last time around say they won't next time, if Zapatero is the candidate. So Jimenez's close link with Zapatero could prove to be her downfall. We'll soon find out.

J

ust a few weeks back, Junta de Andalucia premier José Antonio Griñán also dismissed polls that showed the Partido Popular winning the next regional election for the first time since Andalucia

became autonomous 29 years ago. But as these polls show the gap between himself and the PP's Javier Arenas growing almost on a daily basis – in favour of the latter – he's started to sit up and take notice. That is, he no longer complacently believes that the Socialist Party is a shoo in and will actually have to fight if it wants to win next May's election. However, Griñan is viewed by many as the hand picked man of former premier Manuel Chaves who had to be whisked off to Madrid early last year in an effort to save the party in Andalucia. Griñán has done little to develop his own political personality and Arenas continues merrily on his seemingly unstoppable way. He even sounds more like a premier than Griñán and is definitely better looking – something that played in his favour with the Andalucian ladies in the last election.

B

ut the biggest nightmare of all is undoubtedly the Catalan regional election. It looks as if the moderate Catalan nationalist party, Convergencia y Union, (CiU), is ready to take back the power it held until the Socialist Party did a deal with two extreme Catalan nationalist parties to end its 23 year rule after the 2003 election. CiU candidate Artur Mas has learned his lesson from the last time around in 2007 when he swore he would not make an alliance with the PP. Although he won more votes and more seats than the Socialists, they returned to power with the help of their old allies. This time around, Mas has said CiU and PP have more in common, especially on economic policy, but the polls have given him a comfortable lead. He will also be helped by the fact that many Catalans feel the Socialist government in Madrid let them down over the the reforms to the Catalan Statute. A CiU win in Catalonia and a PP win in Andalucia would almost wipe the Socialist Party off the map – it only has a majority in two regions and has to rely on local parties in the other regions where it is in power. Given his pathetic record so far, Zapatero could go down in history as the man who helped Spain's oldest political party go down the drain. What can you expect from the man whom football fans begged not to attend the World Cup final between Spain and Germany in case he put a hex on the national team.

ongestion tax, toll fare, road maintenance fee. Call it what you like but the purpose of La Línea de Concepcion Mayor Alejandro Sánchez’s plan to start charging drivers passing through his town on their way to Gibraltar is far from helping to improve Spanish-British relations. This Popular Party mayor says his depressed municipality needs money and this is the one bright way to rake in cash if he charges €5 each way starting in October. Sánchez’s bright idea has put Madrid on alert. The government, through its Public Works Ministry, has already told Sánchez that he cannot divert traffic from roadway N-351 so that he can charge a toll to the Rock. But Sánchez told Public Works that the detour was needed as his municipality planned on doing some roadworks as well as upgrading the sewer system and rain drains along the distance.

N

ice plan if he can get way with it. According to Public Works, about 27,000 vehicles pass to and from Gibraltar each day, 95 percent of them passenger cars. With a €5 charge, Sánchez says that he can pull in at least some €50 million annually – a conservative figure if you only count a vehicle going through once. Of course, he says, heavy trucks with cargo would be charged a higher fee. By the way, he is not calling it a toll fare but instead “a congestion fee” – he is already daydreaming of a gargantuan traffic jam backed up throughout his small municipality, which would do wonders for the town’s local commerce not to mention the street hawkers.

O

ver at the Rock, they are not happy with this stalwart. The Gibraltarian government said “a litany of illegalities” prevents Sánchez from carrying out his toll scheme and accused the mayor of playing politics at a foreign government’s expense. In Madrid, government lawyers are reportedly preparing a legal opinion that would pretty much shoot down Mayor Sánchez’s plans. One of the arguments they are studying is whether one European Union member state can legally charge a local road fee to enter another EU country. Gibraltar is not an EU member but technicality it is part of the union. Attached to the UK’s southwest constituency, it has representation in the EU parliament.

S

counting the votes in the ballot box

ánchez has already begun work on his detour despite the Public Work’s prohibition. As part of his reasoning, he has accused the Socialist government of Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero of not doing anything to help his economically challenged municipality. He doesn’t have enough money to pay his 800 town workers, who say they are owed their special biannual pay-out they receive for July. The workers have been holding a series of protests, including setting up barricades on the road leading to Gibraltar. La Línea used

to receive a special economic incentive from Madrid of €30 million annually but that was frozen in 2003 by Sánchez’s own PP government, who were governing under José María Aznar at the time. The Socialists say they are willing to work to get La Línea considered a special border town so it can get more money from the central government, but Sánchez wants his road toll and insists on getting it even if it means turning this into an international incident. The mouse who is willing to roar.

PP pricking away

T

ensions are flaring from another territory, this time Spanish, where political sensitivities are also being pricked by the Popular Party. Several reported incidents of police brutality in Melilla, the autonomous city Spain holds on a tip of northeast Morocco, has Madrid and Rabat at loggerheads which both governments are trying to play down. It all began when Moroccan government officials asked Spain to explain what it calls a rash of Spanish police beatings and unnecessary arrests of its citizens at the Melilla border crossing. The episodes reached a royal highpoint when King Juan Carlos telephoned Morocco’s King Mohammed VI to remind him that relations between their two nations were good. This didn’t set well with the PP, which said it didn’t like the king playing the role of “foreign minister.” The Socialist government has decided to send Interior Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba to Rabat this week in an effort to quell tensions. But on Tuesday, in an act designed to make the Socialists look like fools, the opposition PP sent its communications man Esteban Gonzalez Pons to meet with local officials in Melilla. Gonzalez Pons accused the Moroccan government of trying to take advantage “of a weakened” Zaptero government in order “to get something back.” However, he didn’t say what Morocco’s intentions were. The PP is hoping that the appearance has upstaged Pérez Rubalcaba’s visit later this week, but it only goes to demonstrate how the opposition once again tried to create international incidents in exchange for a couple of cheap political shots.

Alhaurin el Grande

El Palo

I have just visited the new library recently opened in Alhaurin el Grande and would like to share my impressions of it with you. Firstly, what on earth does a place like Alhaurin el Grande need something the size of The British Library? Surely they could make do with something much smaller and less costly to build and, before anyone has a go, yes, I do read a lot and appreciate the written word greatly. Secondly, there are a lot of British people living in the Alhaurin catchment area

who pay their taxes yearon-year with practically no moans. Perhaps the local authority would therefore like to tell me why there isn’t a single book in English in this vast new facility. I have visited the one in Coin and they at least have a few books in English (as well as German I might add) so why do Alhaurin el Grande want to treat us as second class citizens but also want to take our money for living there? I wait to see what response I get from anybody.

I recently went to La Risa at Lauro Golf for a meal after your mention in The News about the good food at their birthday party. My wife and I were out for a drive in the country and realised that we had just passed the entrance so turned round and gave it a try. The meal was excellent as you said it would be and it will certainly be on our list of favourite dining places to go in future. Thanks for the heads up. Love the paper!

Size matters I got a really interesting email last week asking me to explain the size of our solar system, so I thought about putting it all in scale and I came up with some very interesting numbers.

Naomi Watson Fuengirola On my way to work this morning (Monday) I was taking the road from Entrerrios to Fuengirola when, coming round the corner I came face-to-face with about twenty cyclists

that were coming toward me on both sides of the carriageway, apparently having a chat. Luckily, I was not travelling fast so was able to pull onto the hard shoulder to

avoid hitting them. I don’t think they even saw me and all too frequently I have to take evasive actions to avoid killing them. Take care cyclists you are not car-proof!

Because of the huge distances involved it would be better to shrink the solar system down to a more manageable size. So let’s make the Sun a ball 3 metres in diameter and place it in Fuengirola centre on the sea front, directly behind the statue that is there. If you have a free afternoon you may like to try this for yourself. Now if you start to walk in the direction of Los Boliches go 125 metres to just outside the children’s playground area and here would be the first planet Mercury, a ball 10mm across, about the size of a marble. This is almost 60 million km in real life. Carry on walking 233 metres to outside of Bogart’s bar and here is Venus, 26mm or just over 1 inch in diameter. Keep going until you reach the London Bar - directly opposite the taxi rank at 322 metres from the Sun is Earth, about 27mm in size. You would now be 150 million km or 93 million miles from the Sun. It’s been easy up to here but now you need your best hiking boots. Next

stop is Mars, 490 metres from the Sun next to the Carousel. Mars would be only 14.5mm in size.

and there is the last of the true planets, Neptune, a ball just slightly smaller than Uranus.

It’s a bit of a trek now until you come to the Yaramar Hotel 1,677 metres from the Sun and here would be the giant planet Jupiter, 300mm (about 1 foot) in diameter. The distance to each planet from the Sun very nearly doubles as you move further out, each being almost twice as far as the one before. So it wouldn’t surprise you to find that you have to walk 3,075 metres, just over 3km to Saturn at the Ocean View restaurant at the junction to Torreblanca. Although Saturn is slightly smaller than Jupiter, with the rings added it is almost 400mm, about 17inches across.

If you want to keep going then you have to pass Torremolinos, and come to the end of the runway at Malaga airport and here there would be a tiny ball 5mm across and this is Pluto. On this scale, the nearest star to the Sun, Alpha Centauri, would be 87,000 km or 54,000 miles away, that’s twice the distance around the Earth!

Jump in the car and head out towards Benalmadena and when you get to the Elephant roundabout at the Holiday village complex you would find a croquet ball about 100mm in size - this is the planet Uranus. Head on out to Benalmadena harbour 9 ½ km or 6 miles from the Sun

The ISS Watch out next Tuesday August 24th at 22:24 as the giant International Space Station will go directly over head coming from the southwest, you can’t miss it as it will be the brightest object in the night sky. So go outside and give the astronauts a big wave as they go past at 17,000 mph!

Champ is a male, born in the first week April 2010. He is of mixed breed and medium sized. Champ was found in the middle of the Alora by-pass, traumatised, starving, full of ticks - one ear had been cut off with scissors or a knife, and the other ear was full of ticks. He had damage on his side which was probably caused by a kick. He was full of worms and intestinal parasites, which made him very ill. He is now on the road to recovery and is a gentle quiet pup. who gets on well with other dogs and cats. Who is top dog? Question Am I right - is the human the pack leader as far as dogs are concerned? I would appreciate your comments Ronald Hurst , Estepona Reply I am a reponsible dog owner, I do not consider myself the leader of the pack, as indeed I do not consider myself the head of my family, we are a social unit. We have to train our kids and dogs and make the rules like all sensible parents and owners do. Many think that the definition of a leader is an Alpha, the term used for a person who enforces the rules, often this leads to mistreatment of the dog,

inconsistant messages resulting in confusion and stress. Of course most trainers and behaviourists will not accept that one is not a pack leader. The Alpha roll involves rolling the dog on to it’s side or back, pressing the chest to the floor. This is not putting the dog into a submissive position, we are , in fact being confrontational. When dog meets dog, he is not forced into that position. In a fight a dog forced to the ground is not being submissive, he is fighting. Submissive postures are used by dogs voluntarily to difuse a threatening situation. There is nothing hard wired in a dogs brain that tells him to be part of a pack

The President of DEBRA has announced the inauguration in Marbella of the charity’s first Respite Home for people affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (Butterfly skin condition). Funds raised at the recent second golf tournament on the coast will be dedicated to the maintenance and improvement of the services offered at the Respite Home. The new facility will be a place for respite as well as a centre to be assisted by DEBRA nurses, psychologist and social carer. Further events are being held throughout the year to raise more funds to help people suffering from this very painful condition where their skin is as delicate as the wings of a butterfly and, among other problems, it tears and blisters easily.

60 years since we’d last met, but she still looked the same.

a short story by P. Tate Maybe a little old fashioned and not as sleek looking when compared to the younger “Jet set” sitting around her. My eyes ran over her features as I approached …I wondered if she would remember me. ‘Hello old girl,’ I whispered, and I must admit that my eyes were a bit misty as I reached out to touch her. She felt the same… her smell was familiar, but she seemed a little cold in some way. The telephone call to arrange the meeting had been quite unexpected. When we had parted all those years ago, we had both gone our different ways without regret. I’d thought of her every now and then of course, like old lovers do. ’What’s she doing now?’ I’d muse.

I climbed into the cockpit, though not as nimbly as before. The glass eyes of her dials reflected mine as I scanned their familiar faces. I grasped the stick lightly… the wind was in my ears on take-off - we “Hurri” pilots liked the canopy back. My heart beat matched the throb of her Merlin as we soared into the sky. We wheeled and banked; cutting cloud with wing tip, we climbed; we dived, and wondered at our invincibility. However, that invincibility could be abruptly cut by 20 millimetre canon shell. ‘How does she feel?’ said the young man standing on the wing beside me. I turned my head and looked into

eyes that reminded me of his Grandmother. ’She’s the same,’ I smiled, ’I remember her well.’ ‘Yes Sir,’ he chuckled, respectfully caressing the canopy with his hand, ’and I’ll bet she remembers you as well.’

‘Thank you Adam.’ I said watching his cheeky smile. ‘You’re welcome Granddad,’ he replied, ‘she’s on loan to the Museum and I knew that you’d flown her… do you need some more time?’ ‘Yes please, it’s been a long time… and we need to say goodbye.’

I saw his smile fade momentarily then return, ‘OK Sir, call me when you’re ready.’ I watched as he scrambled down and stepped off the wing. I turned my head and gazed through the thick bullet-proof screen. The wind whistled in my ears again.

Comares – high point on the “Route of the Raisin”* WRITTEN BY Jean Joss

P

erched some 739 metres above sea level, though only 25 km away from the coast at Torre del Mar, Comares is one of the highest pueblo blancos in Andalucia and on clear days is visible for miles around in the surrounding countryside. At night the twinkling lights merge into the sky and could almost be mistaken for a scattering of stars.

L

ittle wonder, then, that historically it grew up because of its defensive position, with origins dating back to the third century BC. Here the Romans had an outpost and the Moors built one of their principal forts in the Axarquia (two of the towers in the wall are still standing). Rebellions against Muslim and Christian rulers are depicted in a series of colourful ceramic plaques set at intervals into the town walls, which also house beautifullycared-for little shrines to various saints.

T

o reach Comares you follow a series of winding roads up from Velez Malaga, passing through the villages of Triana and Benamargosa and then turn left after the mysteriously named hamlet of Salto del Negro with its ancient flour mill. The climb then becomes steeper with dips, curves and hair-pin bends until eventually you arrive at the top and enter the pueblo itself. (You may be lucky and find one of the few parking spaces on the square but it is usually wiser to stop further down and walk.)

T

ABOUT

Photo competition in Ronda will be put on display from now until December 15th. Built for the specific purpose of housing bullfights and equestrian events, the bullring in Ronda is a unique listed monument.

The Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda (Royal School of Cavalry in Ronda RMR) celebrates its 225th anniversary with the launch of a photography competition on Flickr with awards going to the best images taken by visitors to the bullring, manège and exhibition rooms, and the photos

To take part visitors should upload their images to the RMR Flickr group (http://www.flickr.com/g roups/plazainfocus/) before December 15th. The best images each month will win €200. The overall best image will be awarded €400. The RMR hopes to get visitors to share their unique way of seeing and experiencing the RMR during the anniversary celebrations.

The idea is to get their creative juices roused by the architecture, history, arts and culture of a monument that has been the inspiration for creative artists such as Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway. For terms and conditions: www.flickr.com/groups/ plazainfocus/discuss/72 157624495456320/ The artist Din Matamoro has designed the poster for this year's Pedro Romero Fair. A past poster was designed by Pablo Picasso, whose painting Torero (1973) was reproduced on the 2006 poster. Din Matamoro has highlighted the solemnity and light of the bullring

in Ronda: "It's magnificent, like looking at a great Velázquez painting. “ The colours of the bullfighter’s capote (cape) feature in the work: "I incorporated the colours of a bullfighting cape and various colours of light as I always do in my work. I also got inspiration from the short amount of time the fight lasts and I visualized the foam that glistens as it often does on the bullfighters costume," explains the artist. The poster was designed using historical images of the bullring that was the birthplace of great bullfighters from the Romero and Ordóñez families.

Want something Embarrassed? Don’t Market to do? Can you be this weekend is open sew? The Salon needs you now! Lazing around in the sun all day and watching the telly or partying in the evening is all very well for a while but, after not very long that little bit of boredom starts edging in and you need, or just plain want, something to do - so this could be your golden opportunity! You don't want to act but there are many other things to do at The Salon Varietes in Fuengirola and, right now, they have avacancies for people to assist in the running of the wardrobe department and they need a wardrobe master/mistress to be in charge of the department. Duties include dressing the performers for each of the shows and maintaining the costumes. You will need to be able to make alterations to clothes and preferably also to make costumes, although this is not essential and you will be assisted by a team of helpers. Hours of work will be flexible although some early evening work will be necessary on occasions but not every night. The theatre is also looking for wardrobe assistants to work alongside the wardrobe master/mistress.

It must be stressed that, as The Salon is a wholly voluntary organisation these posts are unpaid. But, just think of the pleasure when you can see your creations up there under the lights - no more boredom for you! So if you have a flair for creativity and are handy with a needle and cotton The Salon can fit the hours around your needs. The theatre season runs from September until June. If you are interseted or would like more information please contact Lizz Freeman on 952 930 039.

e Last Airbender BY M.NIGHT SHYAMALAN Starring Dev Patel, Noah Ringer Oh dear - where and when did it all go wrong. M Night Shyamalan hit the big time with The Sixth Sense - a fantastic story with a fabulous twist, beautifully filmed, and with glowing performances by Bruce Willis and the extraordinary young talent Haley Joel Osment. Since then it's been pretty much a downward slope leading to his latest release, The Last Airbender. Critics have had a field day reproducing the clunky dialogue that litters this big-budget kids fantasy epic. It's set in a world where some people have the

power to control or "bend" fire, water earth or air - every generation a powerful being called the Avatar is born and he can control all four. This time he is Ang,(Ringer) a 13year-old who sadly in no way resembles Hayley Joel Osment in acting skills. Of course he is a prime target for the baddies - in this case, the evil Fire Nation led by Prince Zuko (Patel). Unfortunately for Patel this is no Slumdog Millionaire although he does his best with what he has to work with. Anyway, Ang, once he is discovered, is whipped away to safety in a place

where the walls are made of ice - perfect to repel an assault by the masters of Fire, not. It's full of fantastical special effects and amazing creatures so no problem in taking the kids to while away a couple of hours in the cinema but there's not much for the grown-ups except giggling a bit at the dialogue before dozing off. Don’t bother if you cannot see it in 3D - it was retro-fitted - and badly. The director has said that this is the first in a proposed trilogy - hmm. Maybe the box office will prove the critics wrong.

Toy Story 3 is now the highest grossing animated film of all time. The third in the Pixar series, in which Woody and Buzz and owner Andy have made grown men weep , has sent studio bosses laughing all the way into the record books and the bank. It has grossed more than $920m at box offices worldwide, according to the Disney Corporation, and knocked Shrek 2 off the top spot. It is also Disney's fourth highest grossing film of all time.

Hitch goes high definition Alfred Hitchcock's classy and classic thriller Psycho is now out on on DVD with an HD polish which makes Norman Bates (Tony Perkins) even scarier and Marion Crane's (Janet Leigh) fear even more palpable. This 1960 movie from the master of suspense received poor reviews but was a big hit at the box office, leading to 4 Oscar nominations. It set a benchmark for chills and is firmly in the list of top 10 ever movies and you can expect the new look to be stunning.

hen we think about Spanish movies, the first thing that comes to mind is Almodovar, but just because he’s an Oscar winning director it doesn’t mean that he’s the best. This week’s rant is about my favourite Spanish movies of all time and Almodovar hasn’t made it on my list.

Here are my top five:

A

t number five we have Alex de la Iglesia’s 2004 comedy “EL Crimen Ferpecto”. It's hilarious. It's poignant. It's artistic. It's even philosophical at times. I can't imagine anyone not liking this film. "El Crimen Ferpecto" is a great surrealistic comedy along the lines of "Being John Malkovich", "One Night at McCools" or even the masterpiece "Brazil". Set in a department store, this film brilliantly weaves the themes of glamorous / plastic life versus the mundane / real. Trapped between worlds and desperately trying to achieve the former is our hero Rafael, a man whose entire life exists within the ladies' clothing department. Somehow he gets wrapped up in murder and blackmail - Guillermo Toledo gives a phenomenal performance, almost perfect!

A

t number four is the 2002 musical comedy “El Otro Lado de La Cama”, which also stars Guillermo

Toledo along side Paz Vega. This is a good comedy and the musical numbers don’t distract from the movie, the songs actually make it stronger. The story is basically about two couples: Paula and Pedro, and Sonia and Javier. When Paula leaves Pedro, he looks for comfort with his best friends, Javier and Sonia. Paula is having an affair with Javier. Pedro tries to find who Paula’s secret lover is and hires a private eye. Meanwhile, while comforting Pedro, Sonia has a one night stand with him and Javier thinks she is cheating on him with her lesbian friend Lucia. It’s a little confusing, but you laugh and sing along till the end.

A

lex de la Iglesia makes his second appearance on my list coming in at number three, with his 1999 comedy “Muertos de Risa”. This is not what you would call a good movie, however it is very, very entertaining and this list wouldn’t be complete without a Santiago Segura movie. El Gran Wyoming and Segura are absolutely hysterical together, it’s a great tale of friendship, show business and madness. It’s stupid and simple and I guarantee you’ll love it. This movie tells the story of Nino and Bruno who are two comedians that reach the heights of success with their duo act, turning them into huge TV celebrities. However, the hate between them grows as fast, and as much, as their fame. Check in next week to find out who gained the number one spot. To be continued...

The love waiting game is over, be ready to woo that special person. It has been a long time coming, so make sure you pay attention to the details, but at the same time never forget that spontaneity is the key to fun. This is a good time to take advice now on a legal matter that has been dragging on needlessly for too long. A spirited friend will give you a glimpse of the very thing that is missing from your world at the moment. Do not let fear destroy love this week; this has been a turbulent time for you. There are many changes occurring in the wings. Have the courage to face your fears remembering that the real battles are not within your home but out there in the world at large. Take time to spend with loved ones and keep the home fires burning. A new venture is on the horizon so keep your eyes peeled. A mystery over lost items is cleared up on Saturday. Over-analysing a situation throws you off course, but your ability to be adaptable will enable you to bounce back from the winds of destruction. Apply reason to every scenario and you can’t go wrong. A pathway less trodden will lead to a clearing and space to provide you with the clarity of thought that you are craving. Do not always go for the easiest route this week; remain determined to face the hurdles that are before you as the rewards will be immense. It has been a hard race but now you have completed it, fulfilment, contentment and happiness is yours. Congratulations, a wish has been granted and the wheel of fortune has turned in your favour. All the parts of the puzzle have come together and the picture is finally complete. Destiny is calling Cancer will you answer its call? A casual acquaintance however may prove to be a thorn in your side - so don’t leave home without your shell. Tensions are high you are not sure which way to turn, pulled between your dreams and your realities. Forces are threatening to turn you away from your inner urge for freedom as there are so many duties and people that are relying on you right now. A visitor arrives from out of the blue and you find your past is quickly catching up with you and there may be some confusion as to how to deal with this. Seek advice from a trusted friend. Your compassion for others has allowed you this week to take on board some issues and problems that are not yours to carry. Do not allow this burden to weigh you down needlessly, just be there for them but remain detached enough to keep a sense of objectivity. It is time for this person to take responsibility for themselves and what they may need is guidance from you. Take pleasure in the simple things of life and do not neglect your own needs.

A cross word, an angry exchange could have made you out to be the black sheep of the family this week but don’t punish yourself needlessly for there are those that offer succour and help. Life in the fast lane still beckons, but a period of reflection will enhance your ability to see the larger issues at stake, allowing you to return to the fold, feeling invigorated and rejuvenated. Later in the week celebrations abound - a fanfare plays to your strengths.

SAGITTARIUS Hustle and bustle - there is a lot to do right now as you prepare to get back into a routine. Family demands are high and children will require a lot of your attention. This is a time to clear out the cupboards and get back to basics, get rid of the clutter of your past and you will be able to move forward with ease. A bargain sets in motion a series of events, some which seem fortuitous, but nd November 22 - remember that cheap is not always the best choice. st December 21

CAPRICORN Be aware that others may be out to lure you into making a false move. Do your research and realise that power games are at play as misdirection could ensue. Secrets could be coming to the fore and something that was hidden will be unveiled, this will be enlightening for you. Make sure you have methodologies in place to gain the best advantage, even though this may seem a chore to you, it will have countless advantages in helping you to sort out a game plan. Do not let one day drift into another but rather make use of the time you have now to prepare for the future. Give in to guilty pleasures and treat yourself to something that you have deprived yourself of recently. A little bit of what you fancy does you good. Seconds out - prepare this week for the ‘battle royale’, this is the internal struggle of fears, insecurities and what is possibly a ‘grande passion’. A make over may not be the answer it is the internal not the external that you need to reorganise. Take this time to find that inner peace within. Time is moving on and a decision will need to be made shortly, but don’t forget to sit down with a cool towel between rounds.

...you don’t have to be a chef!

Falafel are a vegetarian version of meatballs – only better! You can generally get them these days anywhere - in Egypt, McDonald's has their version of a falafel sandwich … would you believe a MacFalafel ... and this is absolutely true! But to make them yourself is even better as you can adjust the taste to exactly how you like them.

Falafel Ingredients:

(serves 6)

● 150gr dried chickpeas ● 1/2 large onion, roughly chopped ● 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley ● 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh coriander leaves ● 1 teaspoon salt ● 1/2-1 teaspoon dried hot red pepper

● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

4 cloves of garlic 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon baking powder 4-6 tablespoons flour Soybean or vegetable oil for frying Chopped tomato for garnish Diced onion for garnish Diced green bell pepper for garnish

Method ● Put the chickpeas in a large bowl and add enough cold water to cover them by at least 2 inches. Let soak overnight, then drain. Or use canned/bottled chickpeas, drained. ● Place the drained, uncooked chickpeas and the onions in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Add the parsley, coriander, salt, hot pepper, garlic, and cumin. Process until blended but not pureed.

● Sprinkle in the baking powder and 4 tablespoons of the flour, and pulse. You want to add flour so that the dough forms a small ball and no longer sticks to your hands. Turn into a bowl and refrigerate, covered, for several hours. ● Form the chickpea mixture into balls about the size of walnuts, or use a falafel scoop, available in Middle-Eastern markets. ● Heat 3 inches of oil to

375 degrees in a deep pot or wok and fry 1 ball to test. If it falls apart, add a little flour. Then fry about 6 balls at once for a few minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Stuff half a pita with falafel balls, chopped tomatoes, onion, green pepper, and pickled turnips. Drizzle with tahina thinned with water. NB: In Russia and Egypt they add pickled turnips to the pita mix!

LESSON

Make sure that the roots and foundations that are already laid do not become an ivory tower. Looking at life from a distance may not always give you the inspiration that you will need. This is the time to rethink your plans and set free sealed ambitions. Advance by making sure that the foundation you are now building remains one that also aspires to your aspirations and dreams. rd September 23 - Passion and love find you when you least expect it. nd

Two weeks ago we looked at various ways of ordering tea and coffee. Now, we're going to see how to order alcoholic drinks. White wine is vino blanco Red wine is vino tinto If you want a glass, you ask for una copa Una copa de vino blanco or una copa de vino tinto A bottle is una botella Una botella de vino tinto de la casa - a bottle of house red Un tinto de verano is a long drink of red wine topped up with lemonade. Very refreshing in the heat of summer Beer is cerveza and again there are variations when ordering. Cerveza de barril is draft beer. Or of course you can ask for una botella of your favourite brand Draft beer comes in three sizes. Una caña is a small beer. Un tubo a slightly larger beer. Una cerveza grande is a large beer - Almost a pint. And if you want a shandy you can ask for una clara Most other drinks are recognised in English though pronounced with a Spanish accent For example, gin and tonic would be jeannie tonica. And whiskey is pronounced wikkey. Ya está - That's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time Valerie Valerie runs the Centro Idiomas Language School in Coin. Obese visit GPs more often

Childhood stress linked to adult ill health Adversity and stress early in life leads to long-term ill health and early death, a group of psychologists at the University of Pittsburgh have warned.

A Dutch study has found that overweight people are more likely to visit their GP than smokers or those who are generally unfit. The researchers from Maastricht University looked at data from almost 4,500 adults, who also filled in a questionnaire about their diet, whether they smoked, how much

they drank and how much exercise they did. They had expected to find that the most unhealthy or unfit people would visit their GP more often but it was the obese who made the most

frequent visits. The finding was true of both men and women and was not accounted for by higher rates of chronic illness. The researchers said further work was needed

Warning about ‘Lady Gaga’ eyes

A smoking myth debunked The benefits of quitting smoking are known but millions of smokers are afraid to give it up because of the calming effect of a cigarette. But studies have shown that lighting up has the opposite effect, causing long-term stress levels to rise, not fall. For those dependent on smoking, the only stress it relieves is the withdrawal between cigarettes. Researchers at the London School of Medicine and Dentistry looked at 469 people who tried to quit after being hospitalized for heart disease. At the start, the subjects had similar levels of stress and

to pinpoint the reasons for frequent attendance. A spokesman for the National Obesity Forum said the results reflected what most GPs saw in their practices.

generally believed that smoking helped them to cope. A year later, 41 percent had managed to stay abstinent. After controlling for several factors, the scientists found that the abstainers had “a significantly larger decrease in perceived stress,” roughly a 20 percent drop, compared with the continuing smokers, who showed little change. The researchers concluded that the continuing smokers were dealing with

uncomfortable cravings between cigarettes multiple times a day, while the abstainers, after facing some initial withdrawal, had greater freedom from nicotine cravings and thus had eliminated a frequent and significant source of stress. This is supported by several other studies that also found that smokers experience higher levels of stress and tension between cigarettes and lower levels over all when they quit.

Opticians in the United states have warned that teenagers are risking their eyesight by wearing a contact lens to make their eyes look bigger – a trend started by Lady Gaga's music video, Bad Romance. In the video, her eyes were digitally altered to make them look bigger and bolder and now several Asian companies are making 'circle lenses', that cover part of the white area in the eyes to make the pupil look larger. They are illegal in the US but they can bought online from foreign websites. They come in a variety of colours including bright pink and red and cost around £13.

In a series of studies they found that childhood stress caused by poverty or abuse can lead to heart disease, inflammation, and speed up cell ageing. In another study, researchers at Ohio State University found that childhood events such as the death of a parent or abuse can make people more vulnerable to the effects of stress in later life and even shorten lifespan. A spokesman for the Institute of Psychiatry in London said such studies had to be interpreted carefully because there is a chance that people do not recall their childhoods accurately and you can only show an association not prove causality. But he added that that didn’t invalidate the studies because the evidence is quite consistent. He said it has already been established that childhood stress has an effect on mental health and it now seems like it has an enduring effect on physical health.

Beauty Tip

Reasons to go grey It saves time and money Life is short and grey hair is easy and (mostly) free. You don’t have to spend hours at the hairdressers, and think of the money you save by not dyeing your hair. It's earth-friendly If you watch what you eat, recycle everything and avoid foods with unpronounceable ingredients, why put something called pPhenylenediamine just a few millimetres from your brain several times a year. It's the new black Seen Helen Mirren’s gorgeous silver locks lately? Or Nichelle Nichols’s amazing shining grey? Even singer/songwriter and rebel icon Patti Smith now has a head full of silver — and that really rocks. It's flexible Decided to try it? There are lots of approaches to converting — from stealth to cold turkey — and you can pick the one that fits your comfort level It's surprising Letting your hair go grey is a little like searching for hidden treasure, you can’t be sure at the outset what you’re going to find at the end of the trail. It could be a shiny salt and pepper mix, or a “precious metals” one - a little bit each of silver, gold and copper. It's sexy and sophisticated Just three words: Jamie. Lee. Curtis. It's powerful Think about it. Would Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada be taken so seriously without that mane of snowy hair? It's real For many women, in a society that worships youth and makes us afraid of ageing, going grey is not as much about style as it is about attitude. Going grey lets them celebrate their wisdom and maturity and throw out the script that says older women can’t be sexy and strong and happy It's just hair Going grey doesn't have to be permanent unless you want it to be.

In the meantime Cowell's other big hit Susan Boyle continues to wow America. After an internet competition entered by 1000s, she has picked Amber Stassi to join her in a duet for her next album The Gift - which holds the Amazon record for prerelease orders even though it is not out until just before Christmas. The Scottish star is also going to make an autumn entrance in Madame Tussaud's.

At the time the panel reckoned his version was so good that it could have been a chart success. Cowboys clamping ban

Motors

The Coalition government has decided that enough is enough after 1.5million motorists were snared by ruthless clamping companies last year. They have torn up the last Government's plans to regulate the industry in favour of an outright ban. Towing away will also be outlawed.Only police or councils will be allowed to clamp or tow away a car in exceptional circumstances.

Lorenzo rides better than he putts to win the Czech MotoGP at Brno Jorge Lorenzo has extended his MotoGP title lead to 77 points after claiming his seventh victory from ten starts in Sunday's Czech Republic Grand Prix at Brno The win means Dani Pedrosa could win the next three races and still not overhaul him.

announced that he is joining Ducati next season - was strangely off-form throughout the race. The reigning seven time MotoGP champion dropped from fifth to eighth through the opening turns and simply never made an impression on the race.

Starting third on the grid, the Fiat Yamaha rider took the lead from title rival Pedrosa at turn three of the opening lap, with the Repsol Honda rider also losing second position to Ben Spies. Pedrosa repassed the MotoGP rookie into the same corner next time around, and soon rode up to Lorenzo's rear wheel. Pedrosa then shadowed Lorenzo until just before the halfway stage of the 22 laps, when Lorenzo began to break away. Lorenzo then extended his advantage over Pedrosa during the second half of the race to win by a comfortable 5.494sec. He later celebrated the win on hole seven of the Brno golf course, the latest Lorenzo

Rossi took seventh from Colin Edwards on lap four, which became sixth place when Andrea Dovizioso spun off his Repsol Honda - after running off line, while fourth - later in the same lap.

The Doctor's final pass was on Nicky Hayden, riding with a hand injury, for fifth place on lap six and he crossed the line 17sec from victory and 4sec behind Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Spies, who will replace Rossi at the factory team next season.

The Turismo Sport is the latest car to join the Alfa Romeo MiTo range. Available in Solid Black as pictured here, or optionally in Biancospino White or Alfa Metallic Red, it comes as standard with 16" alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, cruise control, Blue&Me technology, foglights and a leatherrimmed multifunction steering wheel incorporating audio and phone controls.

Suzuki has launched a highspecification version of its SX4 - the SZ5. Available with either the 1.6-litre VVT petrol or a new 2.0-litre DDiS diesel, this top of the range model gets fourwheel drive as standard, is fitted with rear privacy glass and cruise control as well as standard features such as four electric windows, front fog lights, keyless entry and start, 16-inch alloy wheels and automatic air conditioning. For those unfamilier with the Suzuki SX4, it's a fivedoor hatchback that is designed to blend the characteristics of sporty hatchbacks like the Suzuki Swift, with those of

lightweight SUVs such as the Grand Vitara, to create a practical small car alternative. All versions have a bold SUV appearance with wheel arch extensions, side protection mouldings and front and rear skid plates. Both SZ5 models come with four-wheel drive which has an i-AWD switchable three-mode all-wheel drive system. This is a simple to operate electric control coupling device which allows the driver to select 4WD-Auto, 4WD-Lock, and 2WD modes to suit driving conditions, giving excellent traction on low grip surfaces.

Bellamy off on loan to Cardiff The confrontational Welshman was told to stay away from the Man City training ground and was not included in the 25-man squad after falling out with manager Roberto Mancini. City yesterday (Tue) announced his departure to Championship side Cardiff City on a loan to the end of the season. It seems City did not want him to play for a Premiership rival. Cardiff are Bellamy’s home town team.

Australia’s Simon Gerrans ready for the tour

Joining him will be two of his team mates who took part in Le Tour, Spaniard Juan Antonio Flecha, who will be hoping to impress in his home tour, and Australia's Simon Gerrans, who is now back to full fitness after breaking his arm on the eighth stage of the Tour de France. South African John-Lee Augustyn, Finland's Kjell Carlström, Norway's LarsPetter Nordhaug and British trio Peter Kennaugh, Ian Stannard and Ben Swift complete the line-up. Team Principal Dave Brailsford said of the squad: "Following Thomas Löfkvist's performance at the Tour de France he'll go in as our GC rider but we'll also be heading to the Vuelta with a stage-win mentality. Simon Gerrans is a key stage winner - that's his forte and how he made his name, Unfortunately he had to drop out of the Tour because of injury so he wants to get out there in Spain and try and search out some stage wins. "And the team as a whole will be on the front foot, we want to be attacking. It's a good opportunity for all the guys - we'll choose our days and the stages to take the race on. The finish in Malaga will be at the Gibralfaro Castle. Another spectacular finish is the penultimate stage before the Tour finishes in Madrid, on the Bola del Mundo (also known as Alto de las Guarramillas),three kilometres at an average gradient of 12.4% and 21% in some sections with the summit peaking at 2,265 metres above sea level, and this after climbing Navacerrada, twice. Murray beats Federer in Toronto Masters British No1 in fine form ahead of US Open It earned him his first title of the year, and it made him the first man since Andre Agassi 15 years ago to win Toronto Masters titles back to back. Andy Murray also added his name to a notable list of four players to have beaten Federer and Rafael Nadal in the same tournament. A 7-5 7-5 win over Roger Federer in a rain interrupted final was just the lift Murray needed with the US Open just around the corner. "It was obviously very difficult for both of us," said Murray. "Closing a match out against Roger is difficult, but with rain delays you

have more time to think about it." Murray closed out the match with the help of a 139 mph ace, one of his fastest, and allowed himself a rare smile as he lifted the Rogers Cup for the second year in succession, the first man to do so since Agassi in 1995. Asked whether his US Open breakthrough might come a year earlier than John McEnroe's 2011 prediction, Murray appeared to like the question. "I hope so," he purred. "I've been trying for a few years. Rafa and Roger are two of the best ever — and I have to up my game."

British swim girls do us proud in Budapest

DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again This week saw the staging of the final major of the year the U.S. P.G.A. at Whistling Straights G.C. in Wisconsin. On Sunday, overnight leader Nick Watney lost two of his three-shot lead on the first hole with a double-bogey and proceeded to throw away the win over the rest of the front nine with a sevenover-par 43. There were any number of contenders for the title though, among them the prodigiously talented Rory McIlroy and the German Martin Kaymer who completed the front nine in a very steady 2-under 34. Kaymer began the back nine in similar fashion and held a two shot lead until the longhitting Bubba Watson fashioned a birdie at the 16th to draw level. Meanwhile McIlroy was attacking every pin from the 11th but with no luck until the 14th when he finally drew within one with a great birdie. Kaymer at this

Five of France’s players will face a French Football Federation (FFF) disciplinary hearing over the squad's strike at this summer's World Cup. Patrice Evra, Nicolas Anelka, Eric Abidal, Franck Ribery and Jeremy Toulalan are the players in question. Chelsea striker Anelka was dismissed after being accused of an expletive-ridden tirade directed at manager Domenech during their 2-0 Group A loss to Mexico on June 17th.

stage was the only golfer without a bogey but he lost this record with a bogey at the 15th. Rory also dropped a shot at that hole to lose his way but the event was boiling up to an exciting finish. Steve Elkington who won this major in 1995, was also in the frame at the age of 47 but blew his chance when he overshot the 17th. In the last group however, was Dustin Johnson who dramatically birdied the 17th to go 12 under but grounded his club in a bunker at the last to incur a penalty and miss out on the play-off which was between Kaymer and Watson over 3 holes stroke-play. The two players traded birdies on the first two holes but Watson blew his chance on the 18th to leave Kaymer a simple 2 foot putt to win his first major. Till the next time Keep your head down Dave.

Adlington finished seventh in the 800m freestyle - the event in which she is the world record holder - and broke

her blues as the weight visibly lifted off her shoulders. "It's much better to be

smiling rather than crying after the race. The 800m was so tough, it was such a mental race and it just really messed my head up," she said. "But I just got my head down and went for it and managed to get the gold. I sat down after the 800m and I decided that I had to stop thinking about things that I couldn't change. “ Meanwhile, in the women's 4x100m medley final, Great Britain claimed gold as Fran Halsall collected her fifth medal of the championships.Halsall now has two gold medals, two silver and a bronze for her efforts in Budapest. Amy Smith, who swam the freestyle on the final leg, touched home in second place behind Russia but they were disqualified, handing the Brits the gold in 3:59.72.
