WORLD What a scorcher...!

Last week I was wrong – it indeed did get even hotter and more humid. We have a thermometer in the garden that goes up to 50ºC and it had gone through the 50 and had even broken up the mercury in it so, who knows how hot it was in my garden this time last week. still, as one of our readers said – we're half way through august so it won't be long before we get the cold and the rain back again! however, at least some good has come from the searing heat. I have spent so much time in my pool that, along with my rabbit food diet, I've lost a few inches which, as I seriously needed to, can't be bad. the weekend took its toll on the diet however and I have to confess to a lapse in the chocky doghnut and hot chocolate fudge cake department – both on saturday – and I'd been doing so well too! On saturday morning we went to the Medieval Fayre at sohail Castle in Fuengirola via Marbella as the road's still closed. We parked the car at the bottom of the hill leading to the castle at about 11am then trudged all the way up to the top in the heat only to find that the fayre didn't start until 6pm. Needless to say, when I suggested to a small rotund man who was in charge that it might be a good idea to put a notice at the bottom of the hill giving the time, I got the ever present spanish shrug – GRRRRR!

Tourism laps up water resources

Kashmir avalanche victim identified A body found in the tourist enclave of Leh in the Kashmir has been identified as Lourdes Morro ( above) by a friend, according to the El Mundo newspaper. The body was found shortly after an avalanche swept down the mountains behind the Leh valley on August 6th after heavy rains flooded the area, cutting off hundreds

of trekkers and climbers, including 140 Spaniards. Most of them were located and flown to New Delhi where they caught planes home. The friend who identified Sra Morro is a member of the FrancoSpanish rescue mission that was searching for her and two French skiers who disappeared in the avalanche.

Meanwhile on the Rock itself, the government has adopted a “wait-and-see” attitude. In a statement, it said on Saturday that the La Linea mayor was "clearly engaged in a political manoeuvre with his central government, which is unlikely to allow the proposal to go ahead. In the meantime, Gibraltarians should not allow themselves to be wound up by him."

In just the first two weeks of August, the number of visitors to the Costa del Sol has used the amount of water in the reservoirs by the equivalent of a three month's supply. However, the Junta de Andalucia's environment councillor, Remedios Martel, said this was not a cause for alarm because last winter's rains had raised water levels to levels not seen for at least five years. She added that during that drier period, residents had learned to use the water supply more rationally and appeared to be continuing this good habit.

Back in the UK, Ashley Fox, MEP for South West of England & Gibraltar, has written to the press about the developments in La Linea, drawing attention to the harassment threatened against the residents of the Rock.

Spain’s tax rates are too low warns Minister Development minister José Blanco said during an interview with the Europa Press news agency at the weekend that taxes in Spain are very low and should be raised to the same level as the rest of the EU. Tokyo jewel heist suspect extradited The Spanish authorities have extradited an alleged member of a gang of international jewel thieves known as the Pink Panther gang to Japan in connection with the 2007 theft of a tiara and other jewels from a jewellery shop in Tokyo. Electric car sales oﬀ target Queen Sophia showed oﬀ her green credentials and was snapped at the wheel of her new electric car in Palma de Mallorca on the same day it became known that only 16 have been sold in Spain. This was way short of the 2,000 electric cars that the government announced would be on the road by the end of this year. The government-backed REVE electric car and wind power project said 15 cars had been sold so far this year, in addition to one last

year. In April, the government said it would invest €590 million in the production of electric cars, with the aim of putting 250,000 electric and hybrid vehicles on the roads by 2014. A REVE spokesman played down the poor sales: "The figures are

French town oﬀers to save corridas Raymond Couderc, the mayor of Béziers, in the south of France, has offered the town’s bullring to stage the bullfights that will not be held in Catalonia, once the

corrida ban comes into effect on January 1st, 2012. In a statement last week, he said: “Beziers has a bullfighting tradition, it is geographically close to Catalonia and our bullring

is big enough to stage the important bullfights normally held in the Barcelona ring.” He said he hoped to discuss the proposal with Barcelona’s bullfighting clubs “soon”.

The Mexican embassy has condemned the “act of intolerable and unjustifiable vandalism” against the statue of Conquistador Hernan Cortes in Medellin, Badajoz province, which had red paint thrown at it last week. A group calling itself Anonymous Citizens claimed responsibility. The group said the statue represented “the cruel glorification and arrogance of the genocide” perpetrated by the Spaniards against the indigenous Indians of Latin America, and called it “an insult to the people of Mexico”. What particularly enraged the group was that Cortes has a foot on top of the head of an Aztec. A spokesman for Medellin town council said the head came from one of the many statues the Spaniards found in the temples where human sacrifices were routinely carried out. The cultural chargé d’affaires at the Mexican embassy, Jaime Manuel del Arenal, said the statue was not an

insult and anyone who saw it as such “was denying history”, adding that “Mexico is proud of its double indigence and Spanish legacies”. Hernan Cortes was born in Medellin in 1485. At age 19, he went to Santo Domingo in 1505, where he lived for seven years; in 1511 he took part in the conquest of Cuba, becoming mayor of Santiago de Cuba. In 1519, he persuaded the Spanish governor of Cuba into letting him lead an expedition to Mexico, which had been discovered by the Spanish explorer de Córdoba a year before. At that time, Montezuma II ruled the Aztec empire from his base in Tenochtitlán, today’s Mexico City. Cortés arrived

in Mexico in March 1519 with a group of about 600 men and a few horses. On his way to Tenochtitlán, he made friends with the Tlaxcalans, enemies of the Aztecs, who helped him conquer them. The Aztecs, believing Cortés was a god-king, treated him and his soldiers well, but drove him away in June 1520. Cortés returned

a year later, captured Tenochtitlán and began to build Mexico City on the Aztec ruins. He encouraged people to emigrate there from Spain and it soon became the most important Spanish city in North America. Cortes was made governor and captain general of New Spain in 1523. He returned to Spain in 1539, and died near Seville in 1547.

Lightning injures two

GIRONA. A 60-year-old French tourist was seriously injured last week when he was hit by lightning on a beach before he could reach his car to shelter from the storm. People nearby alerted the Red Cross lifeguard and the man was taken to the nearest hospital. A Spanish holidaymaker suffered minor burns when he was hit by lightning at a Valencia beach.

NAVARRA. The raising of the level of the Yesa dam near the border with Aragon, which has been given the go-ahead, will flood the 4.2 kilometres of the pilgrim's road to Santiago de Compostela. The project was first proposed in 1992 but was met with opposition from people living in the area and environmentalists. The dam has been in service since 1959.

MADRID. The 2009 Annual Gambling Report shows that the number of people banned from casinos or bingo halls rose to 48,905 last year, a 38% increase over the 35,300 who were barred in 2008. Judges issue the bans at the request of gamblers' families or the gamblers themselves. Andalucia has the most banned gamblers (17,099) while Castilla-La Mancha has the fewest (87).

Given the high risk of more forest fires in the area, the Defence Ministry sent 170 soldiers from the fifth battalion of the Emergency Military Unit (UME) to the area over the weekend to reinforce local resources.

Veteran fury at memorial sex act War veterans are demanding that a woman who urinated and performed a sex act on Blackpool's war monument be jailed. Wendy Lewis, 32, was convicted in her absence of outraging public decency at Blackpool Magistrates' Court on Friday. She was caught on CCTV relieving herself before performing a sex act on a man on May 7th. Ian Coleman, president of the town's British Legion, said: "It's a sacrilege to those who didn't come home." He called for the magistrates to jail her and not just "give her a slap on the wrists". A warrant has been issued for Lewis' arrest.

World Bank to lend Pakistan $900m The World Bank is to loan $900 million to Pakistan to help it recover from its worst ever flooding. A World Bank spokesman said the funds will be channelled through the reprogramming of planned projects and the reallocation of money. He told a press conference: "We are reprioritising to make the funds immediately available." But the UN said international aid has been slow and that it has raised only a third of the $460m needed for emergency relief. A spokeswoman for Care International said the UN had to do more to convince donors that the money was "not going to go to the hands of the Taliban". Pakistan's High Commissioner to Britain, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, said it could take five years and $15bn for the country to recover. We are shaping the big society of the future by decentralising power and empowering people. What was important was how money was spent, rather than how much, he said. His comments came as new figures showed inflation is rising much faster than most people's pay.

Hottest night of the year The highest minimum night temperatures since 1942 were registered in Malaga province last Thursday, with the mercury hovering from between 31º to 38º in Malaga city itself and several towns around the province. The culprit was the hot terral wind from North Africa but the cooler levante wind moved in by Friday and brought temperatures down by 5º. The rains forecast for the Mediterranean seaboard from Tuesday on were brought in by a cold front sweeping down from the north of Europe which reduced maximum and minimum temperatures across the country by up to 10º.

First gay trade fair

The first bullfight of this year's feria was cancelled when veterinarians at La Malagueta bullring rejected 14 of the bulls from the Ribera de Campocerrado breeder, who in turn refused to replace them to avoid having to return the entrance tickets. This had never happened in Malaga before, although a similar incident happened in Seville in 1969. An inside source at the bullring said the bulls were not good enough for a first class fight, although the bullfighters contracted

for that day – Manolo Sanchez, Cesar Jimenenz and Oliva Soto – do not figure among the country's best bullfighters. Meanwhile, during the first weekend of the feria police arrested 11 youths

involved in street fighting in which seven people were injured, none of them seriously. By midweek, rain was expected but not enough to dampen the spirits of the revellers.

Best climate in Europe? During the recent hot spell, the temperature at Torrox has been 10 degrees below the provincial average which, according to the local council, merely confirms the town's slogan for tourists - “the best climate in Europe”. Two years ago, the council compared the town's climate with that of cities in Andalucia, Portugal, Greece and Turkey and reached the conclusion that because its average

temperatures were generally lower than elsewhere, it did have the best climate in Europe. Tourism councillor José Perez pointed out that the average summer temperature is rarely above 28ºC while the winter one hardly ever falls below 18ºC. He said: “This proves that our slogan is not just a slogan but a reality, as people living in Torrox well know, because they live it.”

The device consists of a tube fitted with an Archimedes screw that traps solid and viscous material while letting the water through. It is small enough to be taken on board any boat and can work for 24 hours powered by a simple hydraulic engine. While the device is aimed principally at lumps of tar from oil spills, Sr Barranco said it could also be used against jellyfish, an increasing menace along the Mediterranean coastline. He said he was looking for a company to manufacture the device because he did not have the financial resources to do it himself.

Election nightmare ahead

A mouse who wants to roar

It looks as if elections of one kind or another are going to be dominating the headlines for months to come. The Socialists will be holding primaries in September to decide who will run against Madrid premier Esperanza Aguirre and Madrid mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon. The Catalan regional elections are slated for November while the local and most regional elections will be held next May.

eanwhile, the long-suffering general public will be bombarded with the results of opinion polls – which the political parties play down when they're not favourable, but take notice of them when they are.

or example, Sr Zapatero has always said that it's elections that put a government in power, not polls. That has been his stock reply when the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, has pointed out how well it's doing in the polls. However, he now seems to believe the results of an internal party poll which shows that his candidate for the Madrid regional election – Health minister Trinidad Jimenez – is well ahead of her rival Tomas Gomez. Of course, Gomez's backers have called that poll a “dirty manoeuvre”.

The polls that Zapatero pooh-poohed in the past all showed that an increasing number of Spaniards don't trust Zapatero and don't want him to run in the next election. It's also common knowledge that Jimenez was the one who pulled Zapatero out of the hat in 2000 and helped him become the party's general secretary. The polls also show that a fair percentage of the people who voted Socialist the last time around say they won't next time, if Zapatero is the candidate. So Jimenez's close link with Zapatero could prove to be her downfall. We'll soon find out.

became autonomous 29 years ago. But as these polls show the gap between himself and the PP's Javier Arenas growing almost on a daily basis – in favour of the latter – he's started to sit up and take notice. That is, he no longer complacently believes that the Socialist Party is a shoo in and will actually have to fight if it wants to win next May's election. However, Griñan is viewed by many as the hand picked man of former premier Manuel Chaves who had to be whisked off to Madrid early last year in an effort to save the party in Andalucia. Griñán has done little to develop his own political personality and Arenas continues merrily on his seemingly unstoppable way. He even sounds more like a premier than Griñán and is definitely better looking – something that played in his favour with the Andalucian ladies in the last election.

ut the biggest nightmare of all is undoubtedly the Catalan regional election. It looks as if the moderate Catalan nationalist party, Convergencia y Union, (CiU), is ready to take back the power it held until the Socialist Party did a deal with two extreme Catalan nationalist parties to end its 23 year rule after the 2003 election. CiU candidate Artur Mas has learned his lesson from the last time around in 2007 when he swore he would not make an alliance with the PP. Although he won more votes and more seats than the Socialists, they returned to power with the help of their old allies. This time around, Mas has said CiU and PP have more in common, especially on economic policy, but the polls have given him a comfortable lead. He will also be helped by the fact that many Catalans feel the Socialist government in Madrid let them down over the the reforms to the Catalan Statute. A CiU win in Catalonia and a PP win in Andalucia would almost wipe the Socialist Party off the map – it only has a majority in two regions and has to rely on local parties in the other regions where it is in power. Given his pathetic record so far, Zapatero could go down in history as the man who helped Spain's oldest political party go down the drain. What can you expect from the man whom football fans begged not to attend the World Cup final between Spain and Germany in case he put a hex on the national team.

Call it what you like but the purpose of La Línea de Concepcion Mayor Alejandro Sánchez’s plan to start charging drivers passing through his town on their way to Gibraltar is far from helping to improve Spanish-British relations. This Popular Party mayor says his depressed municipality needs money and this is the one bright way to rake in cash if he charges €5 each way starting in October. Sánchez’s bright idea has put Madrid on alert. The government, through its Public Works Ministry, has already told Sánchez that he cannot divert traffic from roadway N-351 so that he can charge a toll to the Rock. But Sánchez told Public Works that the detour was needed as his municipality planned on doing some roadworks as well as upgrading the sewer system and rain drains along the distance.

With a €5 charge, Sánchez says that he can pull in at least some €50 million annually – a conservative figure if you only count a vehicle going through once. By the way, he is not calling it a toll fare but instead “a congestion fee” – he is already daydreaming of a gargantuan traffic jam backed up throughout his small municipality, which would do wonders for the town’s local commerce not to mention the street hawkers.

One of the arguments they are studying is whether one European Union member state can legally charge a local road fee to enter another EU country. Gibraltar is not an EU member but technicality it is part of the union. Attached to the UK’s southwest constituency, it has representation in the EU parliament.

The workers have been holding a series of protests, including setting up barricades on the road leading to Gibraltar. La Línea used

to receive a special economic incentive from Madrid of €30 million annually but that was frozen in 2003 by Sánchez’s own PP government, who were governing under José María Aznar at the time. The Socialists say they are willing to work to get La Línea considered a special border town so it can get more money from the central government, but Sánchez wants his road toll and insists on getting it even if it means turning this into an international incident. Several reported incidents of police brutality in Melilla, the autonomous city Spain holds on a tip of northeast Morocco, has Madrid and Rabat at loggerheads which both governments are trying to play down. It all began when Moroccan government officials asked Spain to explain what it calls a rash of Spanish police beatings and unnecessary arrests of its citizens at the Melilla border crossing. The episodes reached a royal highpoint when King Juan Carlos telephoned Morocco’s King Mohammed VI to remind him that relations between their two nations were good. This didn’t set well with the PP, which said it didn’t like the king playing the role of “foreign minister.” The Socialist government has decided to send Interior Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba to Rabat this week in an effort to quell tensions. But on Tuesday, in an act designed to make the Socialists look like fools, the opposition PP sent its communications man Esteban Gonzalez Pons to meet with local officials in Melilla. Gonzalez Pons accused the Moroccan government of trying to take advantage “of a weakened” Zaptero government in order “to get something back.” However, he didn’t say what Morocco’s intentions were. The PP is hoping that the appearance has upstaged Pérez Rubalcaba’s visit later this week, but it only goes to demonstrate how the opposition once again tried to create international incidents in exchange for a couple of cheap political shots.

I have just visited the new library recently opened in Alhaurin el Grande and would like to share my impressions of it with you. Firstly, what on earth does a place like Alhaurin el Grande need something the size of The British Library? Surely they could make do with something much smaller and less costly to build and, before anyone has a go, yes, I do read a lot and appreciate the written word greatly. Secondly, there are a lot of British people living in the Alhaurin catchment area

who pay their taxes yearon-year with practically no moans. Perhaps the local authority would therefore like to tell me why there isn’t a single book in English in this vast new facility. I have visited the one in Coin and they at least have a few books in English (as well as German I might add) so why do Alhaurin el Grande want to treat us as second class citizens but also want to take our money for living there? I wait to see what response I get from anybody.

I recently went to La Risa at Lauro Golf for a meal after your mention in The News about the good food at their birthday party. My wife and I were out for a drive in the country and realised that we had just passed the entrance so turned round and gave it a try. The meal was excellent as you said it would be and it will certainly be on our list of favourite dining places to go in future. Thanks for the heads up. Love the paper!

that were coming toward me on both sides of the carriageway, apparently having a chat. Luckily, I was not travelling fast so was able to pull onto the hard shoulder to

avoid hitting them. I don’t think they even saw me and all too frequently I have to take evasive actions to avoid killing them. Take care cyclists you are not car-proof!

Because of the huge distances involved it would be better to shrink the solar system down to a more manageable size. So let’s make the Sun a ball 3 metres in diameter and place it in Fuengirola centre on the sea front, directly behind the statue that is there. If you have a free afternoon you may like to try this for yourself. Now if you start to walk in the direction of Los Boliches go 125 metres to just outside the children’s playground area and here would be the first planet Mercury, a ball 10mm across, about the size of a marble. This is almost 60 million km in real life. Carry on walking 233 metres to outside of Bogart’s bar and here is Venus, 26mm or just over 1 inch in diameter. Keep going until you reach the London Bar - directly opposite the taxi rank at 322 metres from the Sun is Earth, about 27mm in size. You would now be 150 million km or 93 million miles from the Sun. It’s been easy up to here but now you need your best hiking boots. Next

stop is Mars, 490 metres from the Sun next to the Carousel. Mars would be only 14.5mm in size.

and there is the last of the true planets, Neptune, a ball just slightly smaller than Uranus.

It’s a bit of a trek now until you come to the Yaramar Hotel 1,677 metres from the Sun and here would be the giant planet Jupiter, 300mm (about 1 foot) in diameter. The distance to each planet from the Sun very nearly doubles as you move further out, each being almost twice as far as the one before. So it wouldn’t surprise you to find that you have to walk 3,075 metres, just over 3km to Saturn at the Ocean View restaurant at the junction to Torreblanca. Although Saturn is slightly smaller than Jupiter, with the rings added it is almost 400mm, about 17inches across.

If you want to keep going then you have to pass Torremolinos, and come to the end of the runway at Malaga airport and here there would be a tiny ball 5mm across and this is Pluto. On this scale, the nearest star to the Sun, Alpha Centauri, would be 87,000 km or 54,000 miles away, that’s twice the distance around the Earth!

Jump in the car and head out towards Benalmadena and when you get to the Elephant roundabout at the Holiday village complex you would find a croquet ball about 100mm in size - this is the planet Uranus. Head on out to Benalmadena harbour 9 ½ km or 6 miles from the Sun

The ISS Watch out next Tuesday August 24th at 22:24 as the giant International Space Station will go directly over head coming from the southwest, you can’t miss it as it will be the brightest object in the night sky. So go outside and give the astronauts a big wave as they go past at 17,000 mph!

Who is top dog? Question Am I right - is the human the pack leader as far as dogs are concerned? We have to train our kids and dogs and make the rules like all sensible parents and owners do. Many think that the definition of a leader is an Alpha, the term used for a person who enforces the rules, often this leads to mistreatment of the dog,

inconsistant messages resulting in confusion and stress. Of course most trainers and behaviourists will not accept that one is not a pack leader. The Alpha roll involves rolling the dog on to it’s side or back, pressing the chest to the floor. This is not putting the dog into a submissive position, we are , in fact being confrontational. When dog meets dog, he is not forced into that position. In a fight a dog forced to the ground is not being submissive, he is fighting. Submissive postures are used by dogs voluntarily to difuse a threatening situation. There is nothing hard wired in a dogs brain that tells him to be part of a pack

The President of DEBRA has announced the inauguration in Marbella of the charity’s first Respite Home for people affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (Butterfly skin condition). Funds raised at the recent second golf tournament on the coast will be dedicated to the maintenance and improvement of the services offered at the Respite Home. The new facility will be a place for respite as well as a centre to be assisted by DEBRA nurses, psychologist and social carer. Further events are being held throughout the year to raise more funds to help people suffering from this very painful condition where their skin is as delicate as the wings of a butterfly and, among other problems, it tears and blisters easily.

erched some 739 metres above sea level, though only 25 km away from the coast at Torre del Mar, Comares is one of the highest pueblo blancos in Andalucia and on clear days is visible for miles around in the surrounding countryside. At night the twinkling lights merge into the sky and could almost be mistaken for a scattering of stars.

Here the Romans had an outpost and the Moors built one of their principal forts in the Axarquia (two of the towers in the wall are still standing). Rebellions against Muslim and Christian rulers are depicted in a series of colourful ceramic plaques set at intervals into the town walls, which also house beautifullycared-for little shrines to various saints.

o reach Comares you follow a series of winding roads up from Velez Malaga, passing through the villages of Triana and Benamargosa and then turn left after the mysteriously named hamlet of Salto del Negro with its ancient flour mill. The climb then becomes steeper with dips, curves and hair-pin bends until eventually you arrive at the top and enter the pueblo itself. (You may be lucky and find one of the few parking spaces on the square but it is usually wiser to stop further down and walk.)

Photo competition in Ronda will be put on display from now until December 15th. Built for the specific purpose of housing bullfights and equestrian events, the bullring in Ronda is a unique listed monument.

The Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda (Royal School of Cavalry in Ronda RMR) celebrates its 225th anniversary with the launch of a photography competition on Flickr with awards going to the best images taken by visitors to the bullring, manège and exhibition rooms, and the photos

To take part visitors should upload their images to the RMR Flickr group (http://www.flickr.com/g roups/plazainfocus/) before December 15th. The best images each month will win €200. The overall best image will be awarded €400. The RMR hopes to get visitors to share their unique way of seeing and experiencing the RMR during the anniversary celebrations.

The idea is to get their creative juices roused by the architecture, history, arts and culture of a monument that has been the inspiration for creative artists such as Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway. Lazing around in the sun all day and watching the telly or partying in the evening is all very well for a while but, after not very long that little bit of boredom starts edging in and you need, or just plain want, something to do - so this could be your golden opportunity! You don't want to act but there are many other things to do at The Salon Varietes in Fuengirola and, right now, they have avacancies for people to assist in the running of the wardrobe department and they need a wardrobe master/mistress to be in charge of the department. Duties include dressing the performers for each of the shows and maintaining the costumes. You will need to be able to make alterations to clothes and preferably also to make costumes, although this is not essential and you will be assisted by a team of helpers. Hours of work will be flexible although some early evening work will be necessary on occasions but not every night. The theatre is also looking for wardrobe assistants to work alongside the wardrobe master/mistress.

It must be stressed that, as The Salon is a wholly voluntary organisation these posts are unpaid. But, just think of the pleasure when you can see your creations up there under the lights - no more boredom for you! e Last Airbender BY M.NIGHT SHYAMALAN Starring Dev Patel, Noah Ringer Oh dear - where and when did it all go wrong. M Night Shyamalan hit the big time with The Sixth Sense - a fantastic story with a fabulous twist, beautifully filmed, and with glowing performances by Bruce Willis and the extraordinary young talent Haley Joel Osment. Since then it's been pretty much a downward slope leading to his latest release, The Last Airbender. Critics have had a field day reproducing the clunky dialogue that litters this big-budget kids fantasy epic. It's set in a world where some people have the

power to control or "bend" fire, water earth or air - every generation a powerful being called the Avatar is born and he can control all four. This time he is Ang,(Ringer) a 13year-old who sadly in no way resembles Hayley Joel Osment in acting skills. Of course he is a prime target for the baddies - in this case, the evil Fire Nation led by Prince Zuko (Patel). Unfortunately for Patel this is no Slumdog Millionaire although he does his best with what he has to work with. Anyway, Ang, once he is discovered, is whipped away to safety in a place

where the walls are made of ice - perfect to repel an assault by the masters of Fire, not. It's full of fantastical special effects and amazing creatures so no problem in taking the kids to while away a couple of hours in the cinema but there's not much for the grown-ups except giggling a bit at the dialogue before dozing off. Don’t bother if you cannot see it in 3D - it was retro-fitted - and badly. The director has said that this is the first in a proposed trilogy - hmm. Maybe the box office will prove the critics wrong.

Spanish movies

Toy Story 3 is now the highest grossing animated film of all time. The third in the Pixar series, in which Woody and Buzz and owner Andy have made grown men weep , has sent studio bosses laughing all the way into the record books and the bank. It has grossed more than $920m at box offices worldwide, according to the Disney Corporation, and knocked Shrek 2 off the top spot. It is also Disney's fourth highest grossing film of all time.

Hitch goes high definition Alfred Hitchcock's classy and classic thriller Psycho is now out on on DVD with an HD polish which makes Norman Bates (Tony Perkins) even scarier and Marion Crane's (Janet Leigh) fear even more palpable. This 1960 movie from the master of suspense received poor reviews but was a big hit at the box office, leading to 4 Oscar nominations. It set a benchmark for chills and is firmly in the list of top 10 ever movies and you can expect the new look to be stunning.

hen we think about Spanish movies, the first thing that comes to mind is Almodovar, but just because he’s an Oscar winning director it doesn’t mean that he’s the best. This week’s rant is about my favourite Spanish movies of all time and Almodovar hasn’t made it on my list.

Here are my top five:

t number five we have Alex de la Iglesia’s 2004 comedy “EL Crimen Ferpecto”. It's hilarious. It's poignant. It's artistic. It's even philosophical at times. I can't imagine anyone not liking this film. "El Crimen Ferpecto" is a great surrealistic comedy along the lines of "Being John Malkovich", "One Night at McCools" or even the masterpiece "Brazil". Set in a department store, this film brilliantly weaves the themes of glamorous / plastic life versus the mundane / real. Trapped between worlds and desperately trying to achieve the former is our hero Rafael, a man whose entire life exists within the ladies' clothing department. Somehow he gets wrapped up in murder and blackmail - Guillermo Toledo gives a phenomenal performance, almost perfect!

t number four is the 2002 musical comedy “El Otro Lado de La Cama”, which also stars Guillermo

Toledo along side Paz Vega. This is a good comedy and the musical numbers don’t distract from the movie, the songs actually make it stronger. The story is basically about two couples: Paula and Pedro, and Sonia and Javier. When Paula leaves Pedro, he looks for comfort with his best friends, Javier and Sonia. Paula is having an aﬀair with Javier. Pedro tries to find who Paula’s secret lover is and hires a private eye. Meanwhile, while comforting Pedro, Sonia has a one night stand with him and Javier thinks she is cheating on him with her lesbian friend Lucia. It’s a little confusing, but you laugh and sing along till the end.

lex de la Iglesia makes his second appearance on my list coming in at number three, with his 1999 comedy “Muertos de Risa”. This is not what you would call a good movie, however it is very, very entertaining and this list wouldn’t be complete without a Santiago Segura movie. El Gran Wyoming and Segura are absolutely hysterical together, it’s a great tale of friendship, show business and madness. It’s stupid and simple and I guarantee you’ll love it. This movie tells the story of Nino and Bruno who are two comedians that reach the heights of success with their duo act, turning them into huge TV celebrities. However, the hate between them grows as fast, and as much, as their fame. Check in next week to find out who gained the number one spot. To be continued...

Falafel are a vegetarian version of meatballs – only better! You can generally get them these days anywhere - in Egypt, McDonald's has their version of a falafel sandwich … would you believe a MacFalafel ... and this is absolutely true! But to make them yourself is even better as you can adjust the taste to exactly how you like them.

Falafel Ingredients:

(serves 6)

● 150gr dried chickpeas ● 1/2 large onion, roughly chopped ● 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley ● 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh coriander leaves ● 1 teaspoon salt ● 1/2-1 teaspoon dried hot red pepper

● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

4 cloves of garlic 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon baking powder 4-6 tablespoons flour Soybean or vegetable oil for frying Chopped tomato for garnish Diced onion for garnish Diced green bell pepper for garnish

Method ● Put the chickpeas in a large bowl and add enough cold water to cover them by at least 2 inches. Let soak overnight, then drain. Or use canned/bottled chickpeas, drained. ● Place the drained, uncooked chickpeas and the onions in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Add the parsley, coriander, salt, hot pepper, garlic, and cumin. Process until blended but not pureed.

● Sprinkle in the baking powder and 4 tablespoons of the flour, and pulse. You want to add flour so that the dough forms a small ball and no longer sticks to your hands. Turn into a bowl and refrigerate, covered, for several hours. ● Form the chickpea mixture into balls about the size of walnuts, or use a falafel scoop, available in Middle-Eastern markets. ● Heat 3 inches of oil to

375 degrees in a deep pot or wok and fry 1 ball to test. If it falls apart, add a little flour. Then fry about 6 balls at once for a few minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Stuﬀ half a pita with falafel balls, chopped tomatoes, onion, green pepper, and pickled turnips. Drizzle with tahina thinned with water. NB: In Russia and Egypt they add pickled turnips to the pita mix!

Una cerveza grande is a large beer - Almost a pint. And if you want a shandy you can ask for una clara Most other drinks are recognised in English though pronounced with a Spanish accent For example, gin and tonic would be jeannie tonica. Childhood stress linked to adult ill health Adversity and stress early in life leads to long-term ill health and early death, a group of psychologists at the University of Pittsburgh have warned.

A Dutch study has found that overweight people are more likely to visit their GP than smokers or those who are generally unfit. The researchers from Maastricht University looked at data from almost 4,500 adults, who also filled in a questionnaire about their diet, whether they smoked, how much

they drank and how much exercise they did. They had expected to find that the most unhealthy or unfit people would visit their GP more often but it was the obese who made the most

frequent visits. The finding was true of both men and women and was not accounted for by higher rates of chronic illness. The researchers said further work was needed

A smoking myth debunked The benefits of quitting smoking are known but millions of smokers are afraid to give it up because of the calming eﬀect of a cigarette. But studies have shown that lighting up has the opposite effect, causing long-term stress levels to rise, not fall. For those dependent on smoking, the only stress it relieves is the withdrawal between cigarettes. Researchers at the London School of Medicine and Dentistry looked at 469 people who tried to quit after being hospitalized for heart disease. At the start, the subjects had similar levels of stress and

Opticians in the United states have warned that teenagers are risking their eyesight by wearing a contact lens to make their eyes look bigger – a trend started by Lady Gaga's music video, Bad Romance. In the video, her eyes were digitally altered to make them look bigger and bolder and now several Asian companies are making 'circle lenses', that cover part of the white area in the eyes to make the pupil look larger. They are illegal in the US but they can bought online from foreign websites. They come in a variety of colours including bright pink and red and cost around £13.

In a series of studies they found that childhood stress caused by poverty or abuse can lead to heart disease, inflammation, and speed up cell ageing. In another study, researchers at Ohio State University found that childhood events such as the death of a parent or abuse can make people more vulnerable to the effects of stress in later life and even shorten lifespan. A spokesman for the Institute of Psychiatry in London said such studies had to be interpreted carefully because there is a chance that people do not recall their childhoods accurately and you can only show an association not prove causality. But he added that that didn’t invalidate the studies because the evidence is quite consistent. He said it has already been established that childhood stress has an effect on mental health and it now seems like it has an enduring effect on physical health.
