! Phew t! o It’s h

It’s still boiling up here inland - no cooling sea breezes for us - but we should spare a thought for our animals and make sure they’ve got enough shade and water etc., it’s bad enough being hot ourselves but, think what it must be like having to go round in a fur coat! One of our readers, Mike, who pops into our office in Coin each week to pick up his copy of the News, came in with a fantastic bag full of veggies for us all last Wednesday. all gifts are, of course, greatly appreciated by us all and, as I have just got a new Magimix food processor, I shall be looking for new recipes to try out in it and will be making some Gazpacho from the tomatoes from Mike. We were bobbing around in our pool the other night when it started to rain. My first reaction was to go indoors to dodge the drips but then it occured to me that I was already wet all over so, what was I worried about. tempers got frayed when a friend waited two hours to get into Gib last week. What was the hold-up? Nobody knew as there was no-one in Morrisons when they evetually got there!

Al Qaeda frees Spanish hostages after 9 months Mr Chafi said: “We gave them up for dead, we believed it was a lost cause. It was the most difficult time during the negotiations for me.” News of their release was floated on Sunday but the government refused to confirm it until the pair were definitely out of the hands of their kidnappers. The two men were seized by militants from al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in Mauritania last November. A female colleague seized

their release "puts an end to a terrorist action which should never have happened." He said their families were travelling with the Secretary of State for Cooperation, Soraya Rodriguez, to meet them. The release came just days after Omar Ould Sid Ahmed Ould Hama, a Malian militant who was sentenced in Mauritania for kidnapping the Spaniards, was extradited back to his home country something that AQIM had

reportedly demanded. On arival, Sr Vilalta was walking with the help of a crutch, after sustaining bullet wounds in one leg when he tried to escape on the day of their capture. Speaking of their kidnappers, he said: "They have treated us well - we have lived like they have, we've eaten like they have, we've slept like they have. But it was very hard in the middle of the desert, they are used to it, but we're not. They took away nine months of out lives."

Holiday shock for Camerons Prime Minister David Cameron’s wife Samantha yesterday (Tuesday) gave birth to a baby girl - only the second baby born to a serving British PM in 160 years. The baby arrived early while the family were on their summer holiday in Cornwall and came as “a bit of a shock”, Mr Cameron told reporters

Cameron had been expected to return to work next week but its now likely to take paternity leave, leaving deputy Nick Clegg in charge for an extended period. Bookies William Hill said Marnie was the 2/1 favourite for the baby’s name, followed by Enid at 3/1 and Annabel at 4/1.

The leaders of the CCOO and UGT said on Tuesday that the draft labour reform law, which is currently being debated in the Upper House, gives “more reasons for the general strike”, called for September 29th.

They also criticised Labour Minister Celestino Corbacho for proposing that people on the dole should be given only 30 days, instead of the current

Both men thanked the Spanish government for its diplomatic efforts to secure their release. Spain and Morocco settle border crisis Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said after meeting his Moroccan counterpart, Taieb Cherkaoui, on Monday that relations between the two countries were as “deep” and “fraternal” as the one between their respective monarchs. He said cooperation between the two countries was of an “exceptional quality” and that Morocco is a “strategic, credible and responsible ally”. However, Sr Rubalcaba was not given any explanations about the five notes sent by Morocco to Spain about the alleged brutality of the Spanish border police in Melilla, the trade blockade that Moroccan activists tried to impose or the posters insulting the Spanish police which were pasted up on the Moroccan side of the border. At a press

conference at the Spanish embassy in Rabat on Monday afternoon, Sr Rubalcaba refused to talk about the “incidents” that the two governments “had put behind them”. The peace was sealed by an unexpected meeting with King Mohamed VI on Monday evening. Melilla regional premier Juan José Imbroda said “Morocco won this battle”. He said the only messages the Spanish government had sent was that Morocco must not be offended at

any price and that anyone who visited the enclave to give a show of support – as former PM José María Aznar did last week - was a traitor. Sr Imbroda, who belongs to the Partido Popular, said the government had not contacted him for at least a year. “They only ring me to tell me not to defend what I should defend,” he said, referring to his recent visit to the border accompanying PP spokesman Esteban Gonzalez Pons last week.

Guardia Civil union leader targeted The Association representing the Guardia Civil, AUGC, demanded on Monday that the proceedings initiated against its general secretary in Madrid, Joaquin Cánovas, for “making use of his freedom of expression”, should be dropped. In an article in the ABC daily newspaper, Sr Cánovas had written about the “pressures” brought to bear on the Guardia Civil to increase the number of fines they hand

Cuban dissident contingent grows Twenty six Cuban dissidents have arrived in Spain since the Castro regime agreed to release 52 political prisoners, but they are just the tip of the iceberg. They have all brought a number of relatives with them, adding up to 154 at the last count, who are all guaranteed bed and board and a small amount of “pocket money” – some €50 per person per month. Most of them have decided to stay in Spain but some want to go on to the US and Chile where they have family.

The AUGC also called for the resignation of the general director of the Police and Guardia Civil Javier Velazquez, because of his “·inability to solve the conflict”. Record tourism in Basque Country

Woody Allen goes home via Oviedo

More than 257,000 tourists registered in hotels and rural inns in the Basque country last month – the highest number ever recorded for the month of July. Tourism figures have been rising steadily so far this year, after dropping considerably in the previous two years. If the trend continues, Basque tourism organisations have said the area may regain

the two million tourists who visited the area between January 1st, 2007, and December 31st, 2007. The Basque authorities believe that the absence of attacks by the terrorist group is encouraging more

people to visit a region generally ignored by foreign visitors, who tend to head south. Those in the know say the region’s traditional ferias, culture and natural beauty is well worth knowing.

Allen knows the city well, having spent time there when he received the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 2002. He returned to film scenes for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” in Oviedo and Aviles and tries to visit the area when he is in Spain.

First married gay soldier gets the boot Alberto Linero Marchena, who claims to be the world’s first married gay soldier, told reporters on Monday that he has been expelled from the Army “after two years of threats, abuses and propositions”. His expulsion will be

published in the Ministry of Defence’s Official Gazette on September 1st, giving as the reason the fact that he has been receiving psychiatric treatment since November 2009. A source in the Ministry denied that Linero had been

threatened or abused and said an internal investigation had shown that the soldiers he had denounced were innocent. In September 2006, Linero and Alberto Sánchez Fernández, a soldier based in Morón de la Frontera

He is especially enchanted by Oviedo, which he has described on more than one occasion as “a delicious city, exotic, beautiful, clean, pleasant, tranquil and pedestrianfriendly. It’s as if it did not belong to this world, as if it didn’t exist. Oviedo is like a fairy tale.” After resting over the weekend with two of his daughters, Allen began to promote his latest film – You will meet a tall dark stranger – which will open throughout the country on Friday.

Mayor fired for naughty phone calls The Partido Popular’s provincial delegation in Segovia has suspended the membership of the mayor of Vallelado (pop. 800), who ran up a bill of €5,700 on his official mobile phone, calling the 803 telephone sex number. The local council’s treasurer, Luis Miguel Aranda, began to suspect something was amiss when Mayor Jose Luis Garrido started to claim travelling expenses for journeys of up to 80 km, when he never travelled further than 10 km on official business. Sr Aranda resigned after refusing to sign the claims and reported the matter to party headquarters in Segovia. A closer look at his expenses showed that the mayor was using them to pay his whopping phone bills.

World News Trapped miners receive food and water months. Rescuers made contact with the miners on Sunday after lowering a probe some 700m beneath the surface. They have been trapped since August 5th, when the main access tunnel collapsed. They are thought to be located 4.5 miles (7km) inside the mine, in a 50 sq m shelter that contains two long wooden benches. Tanks of water inside, along with water from drilling machines and ventilation

Parties report record donations

The first supplies of water and food to 33 Chilean miners who have been trapped underground for 17 days were sent in capsules down a tube - the miners' only lifeline - on Monday. They have not yet been told it may take up to four months to get them out, the head of the rescue operation said. He said it could take that long to drill a new shaft wide enough to pull the men to safety. A specialised drill is on its way to the San Jose copper and gold mine, but even if more specialised equipment was sent from outside Chile, Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said the operation would still take at least two

shafts helped the men to survive, but they had very limited food supplies. President Sebastian Pinera announced they were all still alive on Sunday. Surrounded by relatives of the miners at the pithead, Mr Pinera held up a note from the miners saying: "All 33 of us are fine in the shelter." People across the country celebrated the news on Sunday night, waving flags and sounding the horns of their cars.

The Electoral Commission has reported that the political parties raised a record £26.3m in donations in the run-up to May's general election - the Conservatives attracted the most during the four months from March 1st to June 30th, taking in £12.3m. This was followed by Labour on £10.9m and the Liberal Democrats, who received £2m in donations. The overall figure beats the £20.6m given in the first quarter of 2005, just prior to the previous election. During the same period, the Scottish National Party received £277,000, the UK Independence Party £256,000, the Green Party

got £54,000 and Plaid Cymru £35,000. There were no donations registered for the British National Party. Under Electoral Commission rules, only gifts totalling £7,500 or more for a central party, or £1,500 for a constituency association, have to be declared. The thresholds increased earlier this year from £5,000 and £1,000 respectively. In its report, the commission reveals that, during the second quarter of this year, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats reported receiving a total of four donations amounting to £25,806 from impermissible sources. These were returned within the 30 days allowed.

A US district court has issued a temporary injunction blocking plans by the Obama administration to increase funding for stem cell research, ruling in favour of researchers who say human embryonic stem cell research involved the destruction of human embryos. Judge Royce Lamberth said lawsuits brought against the new guidelines could now go ahead. President Obama lifted a ban on funding for stem cell research in March. Critics say the ban, which was kept in place by Mr Obama's predecessor, George W Bush, impeded the fight to find treatments for diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and diabetes. But Judge Lamberth said an injunction would not "seriously harm" embryonic studies.

Warning against Philippines travel Hong Kong authorities expressed anger and shock at the Philippines after the deaths of eight of its tourists in a bus hijack.

A "black" travel warning has been issued, which urges all travel to the Philippines to be cancelled and calls on Hong Kong people in the Philippines to leave as soon as possible. Flags are hanging at half-mast around Hong Kong and the stock market held a minute's silence for the hijack victims on Tuesday. Two planes, carrying doctors and counsellors, were chartered to bring back the survivors of the incident. The Chinese government has also demanded a thorough

investigation of how the tragedy was handled. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi telephoned his Philippine counterpart Alberto Romulo to say China "was appalled" by the murders. Questions have been raised over how police failed to enter the bus before eight tourists were shot by a rogue policeman. President Benigno Aquino said a "thorough investigation" into the incident will be held. Survivors and experts have criticised the police for being indecisive and slow in their handling of

the crisis. In the last hour of the siege, police failed in an attempt to board the bus, being forced back by gunfire from the inside of the vehicle. By the time they managed to get on board the bus an hour later, the gunman, a disgruntled former policeman, had been killed along with eight of the 15 passengers remaining on board. Mr Aquino defended the actions of the police at the scene, saying the gunman had not shown any sign of wanting to kill the hostages.

The police woman suffered head injuries after a concrete block was thrown from the roof of Ardoyne shops. Mr Jorro Costa is originally from Barcelona but has an address at Ulsterville Avenue in Belfast. He was remanded in custody. A detective sergeant told Belfast Magistrates Court he believed he could connect the accused - who also faces a charge of riotous assembly - to the charges. Bail will be set at a later date. An Orange Order march through Ardoyne on July 12th was followed by three nights of rioting.

More egg recalls ahead

China may limit death penalty

WASHINGTON. The US food safety agency has predicted more egg recalls as it investigates the source of salmonella-tainted eggs that have made ill as many as 2,000 people. Since May, the US has seen a fourfold increase in salmonella infections.

BEIJING. The government is considering dropping the use of the death penalty to punish several economic crimes, according to China's state news agency, Xinhua. A draft amendment to the country's criminal code suggests that 13 "economyrelated, non-violent offences" be dropped from the death penalty list. The death sentence is currently handed down to people found guilty of 68 specified crimes.

In the last 10 days roughly 500 million eggs traced to two Iowa companies have been recalled across the country.

Brits launch plan to save their homes The British residents in Almeria whose properties are considered to be outside the local urban plans are setting up committees in each municipality affected which will then sit down with the local councils in September in an effort to seek a way to regularise their homes. Some 5,000 properties are under threat of demolition, mainly in the Almanzora Valley. It will be the first time the local councils allow those affected to participate in a process which threatens to be a long one, and which came

to a head two years ago when the home of John and Helen Prior in La Loma de Vera was demolished, making headlines around the world. The couple lived in a garage until a few months ago when the local council rented a house for

them. The couple are waiting for a court ruling about their demand for €600,000 in compensation. The British community has set up an association to fight urban abuses, AUAN, and the EU has taken an interest in the matter.

Man goes on crime spree The Guardia Civil arrested a 39-year-old man after he committed 11 crimes in four towns – three in Granada and one in Jaen – in less than six hours on Friday. During that time, the man – a known delinquent with 59 arrests on

his record – stole three cars, tried to steal another three, made a failed attempt to rob a supermarket, stole from a bakery, drove recklessly and failed to stop when flagged down by a Guardia. His crime spree started at 11 pm

on the Thursday in Baeza, where he stole a van, and ended at just before 5 am when the Guardia finally caught up with him after he robbed the bakery in Pozo Alcón in Jaén province. He is currently in jail awaiting trial.

Father and son die in horror crash A 41-year-old and and his 13-year-old son were killed in the early hours of Sunday morning when their motobike ran into a horse on the A-355 Coín-Marbella road. A 54-year-old man died when he fell from Los Gaitanes pass in El Chorro last week. He was guiding a group of 20 people who were practising canyoning when the rope the man was using snapped and he fell 10 metres to his death. after attending the III Chess Evening in Ojén. The Pizarra town council declared two days of mourning. Mayor Francisco Vargas said the the townspeople were “destroyed” by the news – the man's family was much loved locally.

Animals don't vote, people do In an interview with a local newspaper, the president of Triple A (Association of Abandoned Animals), Javier Peromingo said he had asked the Marbella town council for a subsidy to provide food and water for the 450 animals in the refuge since “we are doing the work of a municipal pound without any help from the council”. He said the sum of €3,500 was an insignificant amount for

the council. Mr Peromingo stressed that he had no political affiliation, but pointed out that while animal's can't vote, animal lovers can. The issue of abandoned cats and dogs is becoming a big issue – Mijas council is now threatening huge fines for feeding stray animals in the street is just one example – and could play an important role in next year's local elections.

Four Britons were injured, one of them seriously, when a hot water pipe exploded in the Cortijo Blanco Hotel in San Pedro Alcántara on Monday morning. Carol Gardener, 53, had been passing the hotel when the blast happened. She was taken to Costa del Sol Hospital before being transferred to Carlos Haya Regional University Hospital in Malaga, where she was put on artificial

respiration. A hospital spokesman said she had a head injury and burns and her condition was serious. Friend Julie Loud suffered a leg injury and the two husbands of the women were treated for minor injuries. A hotel worker

said the pipe was on the outside of the building but the explosion had only caused limited damage. Hundreds of Britons were staying at the hotel. The Foreign Office has been providing consular assistance.

Body found in ravine The body of a middle-aged man has been found in a ravine near Ojen, wrapped in towels, with a plastic bag over the head and a recent surgical scar running down the abdomen. The results of the autopsy indicate that the man died from an overdose of cocaine. Police are working with the hypothesis that the man was a “mule” and that a cocaine wrap burst in his abdomen. They believe the people accompanying him slit him open to save the rest of the drug. The Guardia Civil are trying to identify the man, who they believe was a South American aged between 45 and 50.

Province’s youngest town

British marijuana grower arrested

ALHAurIN dE LA tOrrE. The town’s population is the youngest in the province – 20% aged under 20 - and the lowest percentage of people aged 65 and over, less than 10%, according to Andalucia’s Institute of Statistics. It also has the fifth highest average annual income - €18,704 – after Benahavis (€24,000), Rincon de la Victoria (€21,000), Marbella (€19,145) and Benalmadena (€18,904).

COIN. The Guardia Civil have arrested a Briton identified only as Tom N.B., after they found 337 marijuana plants on his property, and charged him with offences against the public health. The arrest forms part of a campaign to eradicate the individual consumption and distribution of the drug. A Guardia spokesman said the plants, weighing 1,160 kilos, had been destroyed.

SEVILLE. The fine of €120,202 imposed against Endesa by Andalucia’s High Court (TSJA) in 2007 for several cuts in the electricity supply in Malaga and Seville in 2003 and 2004 has been increased to €901,518 by the High Court in Madrid - the amount of the original fine imposed by the Junta de Andalucia which the TSJA later reduced, considering it excessive.

MALAGA. The province has a shortage of some 800, according to nurses’ union, Satse. The union said the average number of nurses per 100,000 in the EU is 843 – in Malaga the average of 387 nurses per 100,000 inhabitants is well below that. The average for Andalucia is 410 per 100,000 inhabitants while the average for the rest of Spain is 531.

n 10 - Political Update

The Local Voice

Muriel Pilkington

Red herrings

A

lthough Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba returned from Morocco on Monday evening assuring everyone that the border crisis at Melilla was settled, the actual crisis itself is largely unexplained.

M

orocco has sent at least five diplomatic notes in as many weeks complaining about Spanish police brutality at the border crossing, which culminated in an economic blockade ten days ago, that ended almost as soon as it began – for no apparent reason. Activists on the Moroccan side were leaving nasty posters at the crossing portraying the border police, especially the women, as little more than Nazi concentration camp guards. Then that stopped.

A

ll this was going on on the Moroccan side of the border and it could be nothing more than King Mohamed IV (above) stirring up trouble to divert attention from the Western Sahara – formerly the Spanish Sahara – which has been a thorn in the side of both countries for decades. The Polisario independence fighters did their best to get rid of Spain in the 1960s and early 70s, while Morocco claimed the territory for itself. Matters were brought to a head in October 1975, when the International Court of Justice decided that neither Spain nor Morocco had any rights to the territory. Franco, who had fought so hard to hold on to Spanish Morocco in his younger days, was just about to sink into his final coma, when Morocco decided to settle the matter once and for all. It launched the so-called Green March on November 6th, when some 350,000 unarmed Moroccans converged on Tarfaya in southern Morocco waiting for a signal from King Hassan II to cross into Spanish Sahara – just two weeks before Franco's death. With the old warrior out of the way, Spain gave in and signed the Madrid Agreement, which divided the territory between Morocco and Mauritania, in return for phosphate and fishing concessions. Spain and Morocco did not consult the Sahrawi population, who have been demanding independence ever since. Spain finds itself in the untenable position of trying not to offend the Sahrawis or the Moroccans.

O

n the Spanish side, some people suspect the Socialists have allowed the Melilla border problem to get out of hand to divert attention from more pressing matters – such as the internecine fight between the Socialist Party's organiser in Madrid, Tomas Gomez, and

Memo from Madrid

Martin Delfín

Writes for the English language version of El Pais

The fight against terrorism Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez, who has the support of Sr Zapatero, to run against Madrid premier Esperanza Aguirre in the next regional election. Few observers are willing to bet on this one because Gomez has a lot of support in Madrid – he achieved the impossible and put the party back together after Esperanza Aguirre smashed it to smithereens six years ago. However, Jimenez has the government's support, and it looks as if the primary could be a litmus test for the Socialists chances of winning the March 2012 general election. If Gomez wins, the pundits say, Zapatero will lose the general election. A Jimenez victory would mean a Zapatero victory in 2012.

H

owever, anything could happen between now and then. Zapatero has to push the 2011 Budget through parliament in October, and the Socialist Party has to win the Catalan regional election in November, something that's beginning to look far from likely. A failure in either case could lead to the general election being brought forward. And even if the government survives, it still has to worry about the regional and local elections next May. There is every indication that the Socialists will take a beating in many areas – especially here in Andalucia.

S

o it will come as no surprise if Zapatero and his ministers suddenly find religion in the next few weeks, after years of trying to remove all vestiges of Christianity from public view. This is another part of the problem. Zapatero's the one who re-discovered the so-called Alliance of Civilizations - between the West and the Moslem countries - which he has been pushing ever since he took power. In fact, the idea has been floating around for decades, even in the Arab world.

F

or Zapatero this alliance means forbidding all Christian religious symbols in public places, while bending over backwards to avoid upsetting the Moslem community, who have no intention of giving up their “religious” symbols, which are not really religious but cultural expressions. Nowhere in the Koran does it say that women have to cover themselves up from head to toe – simply that they should dress modestly. More ominously, garments like the burka are increasingly being used to express a more radical Moslem stance.

T

he problem here is that Western countries are trying to be fair, rational, tolerant, etc. while the Moslem communities in those countries seem intent on not giving an inch. The Koran might not cover up women but it does say good Moslems should spread the word, by the sword if necessary. And that hasn't changed at all. Bin Laden said not too long ago that if we all convert to Islam there would be no problem. Let's hope that one sailed over Zapatero's head, or we'll all be off to the mosque before long.

F

or a long time, Spain has led the fight against terrorism across the continent. So it is always satisfying to see that the government of Madrid gets high praises from other countries such as the United States for its contribution in the global battle against criminal elements. Earlier this month, the US State Department released its annual Country Reports on Terrorism, which highlighted some of Spain’s major challenges and victories in dealing with such groups. The United States says that it is “seriously” concerned by the amount of terrorist activities and financial support for certain groups across Europe. While the survey surmised that progress has been made in cracking down on illegal and violent groups, it said that efforts to combat the threat in Europe “were sometimes slowed by legal protections that made it difficult to take firm judicial action against suspected terrorists.” Among the reasons are the asylum laws that afford loopholes, lack of adequate legislation or standards that limit the use of classified information in holding terrorist suspects.

S

pain, says the US government, is “an important transit, fundraising, and logistical base for terrorist organizations operating in Western Europe.” Nevertheless, terrorism laws are tough and crackdowns against ETA were more than successful last year when French authorities helped Spanish police deal some strong blows to the Basque terrorist organisation. “Joint operations with France resulted in, among other successes, the detention of ETA’s suspected military leader and its alleged political chief, who also reportedly served as the group’s communications chief. Each of these arrests – as well as numerous others – occurred in France with the participation of Spanish security forces,” the survey said. Last year, as of mid-December, security services had arrested 124 alleged ETA members and their associates, including 31 in France.

B

ut one of the biggest issues for the US government has been the proliferation of Islamic fundamentalist groups in north Africa. Last year, the Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) group kidnapped three Barcelona aid workers in Mauritania and took them to Mali where two, that had been held since November 29th, were finally released on Monday. In March, AQIM had released the female captive. Until this week, there seemed not to have been any solution in sight. But the quiet negotations between the Spanish government and the captors through the mediation of a high government official from Guinea-Bissau proved successful.

E

ven though the US government recognises that many European nations are lacking in stronger prosecution laws, it says that Spain has begun to adopt the Council of Europe’s Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism. The Cabinet has approved a

series of legislative reforms in the nation’s counter-terrorism laws. “These reforms criminalized such offenses as inciting terrorism as well as recruiting, training, indoctrinating, or financing terrorists,” says the document. The proposal is still waiting parliamentary approval to become a binding law.

W

hile the US government also recognised that Spain’s geographical location and large immigrant population from North Africa and South Asia has made it “ a strategic crossroads” for international terrorist organisations, it highlighted Madrid’s success in signing bilateral agreements with the United States to strengthen the fight against terrorism. One of these efforts came when Interior Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba travelled to Washington last year to signed an accord to exchange fingerprints and other data on known terrorists and criminals while protecting individual privacy. “The Spanish government maintained a robust law enforcement and intelligence posture against terrorist financing,” the report states.

Autumn preview

S

ummer is almost over and the government will be getting back to work on trying to put the Spanish house in order. Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has two high-profile fronts he will have to face. First, he must drum up support for his 2011 budget, which is due to be discussed in October. The Socialist’s main parliamentary partners, the Catalan nationalist CiU bloc, have threatened to vote against the budget if Zapatero does not take stronger actions to cure the economy. The prime minister could see his support dwindle in parliament if the budget isn’t passed. Another battle ground he will have to face, and one that seems to be more challenging to the prime minister, will be the internal primary set for October in the Madrid regional race. Zapatero is supporting his Health Minister Trinidad Jiménez while the secretary general of the Madrid Socialist Party Tomás Gómez has vowed to beat her. While the Socialists should be neutral in this internal primary, they are not. Two fronts, with the future of the Socialist government at stake, make the political offerings this autumn the most interesting.

A.R.C.H. A.R.C.H. the Andalucian Horse Rescue Centre was called to advise and assist in the case of a badly injured mare in Cartama. When our volunteers met up with Jane, our informant, the horse was in a pitiful condition - emaciated and with an appalling wound to its foot. The owners said they’d been away and it must have

tangled itself in some wire. Their vet had assured them the horse would recover and that its foot would grow back. We persuaded them to allow us to take the horse to Jane's stables nearby (it would never have survived the journey to the rescue centre) accompanied by the ARCH vet, she was transferred and the wound cleaned properly.

It was immediately obvious that the hoof had shattered with no hope for her. It was essential to put her out of her pain as soon as possible. Thanks above all to Jane, for caring enough to take action, and persisting in the face of official apathy and to all the ARCH volunteers and vet whose prompt response saved the mare endless suffering.

Marjut Arvinen Mijas Guilty as charged! Yes, I have been feeding stray cats in Mijas and while doing that I also sterilize these cats to reduce their numbers in the area. If there is a sick cat, it will get the medicine it needs, "bad cases" unfortunately have to be put to sleep. And I do this with help from an animal charity. Now it seems I have to stop doing all this because of the fine that is to be imposed by Mijas council of

€750. A council spokesman says people should contact the animal charities, but every single charity is full of stray cats and dogs, they just can't take any more animals, and because of this they are all seriously struggling with money problems. The only solution for this stray animal problem is to keep sterilizing them. Mijas town hall should make a programme with a

local vet/animal charity to sterilize these cats. Mijas could be an example for other towns with this kind of sterilizing programme! Fining people will not solve this problem, when we stop feeding/sterilizing these cats Mijas willbe full of stray cats again, looking for food from the bins. Or perhaps the rats and mice will appear with no cats about. People of Mijas, is that really what you want?

The days of the week were originally christened by the Romans who named them after the seven known objects in the sky that were not stars. Here in Spain they still retain some of their Latin names. Sunday is obviously the Sun, Monday, Lunes, the Moon, Tuesday or Martes is Mars, Wednesday or Miercoles is Mercury while Thursday, Jueves, is named after Jupiter, Friday or Viernes is Venus and Saturday is named after the planet Saturn. The reason that there are 12 months in a year is because before calendars were invented the year was divided into the number of full moons that were observed. This eventually turned out to be totally inaccurate because some years can have 13 full moons so again the Romans came to the rescue. Julius Caesar asked an astronomer, Sosigenes of Alexandria, Egypt, to devise a better calendar. What resulted is called the Julian Calendar. He abandoned aligning the months with lunar cycles, and adopted months of 30 or 31 days length, keeping February at 28 days. And because the Earth takes 365 and 1/4 days to go around the Sun an extra day had to be introduced in February every 4 years hence leap years. Because the Earth is not standing straight up on its end but instead is titled over by about 23 ½ °, as it orbits the Sun we get different seasons; winter, spring, summer and

autumn which cause the length of the days and nights to vary. The longest day is called the Summer Solstice and the shortest day the Winter Solstice. Both these days have been celebrated with much grandeur for thousands of years; Stonehenge in Britain was built to celebrate the Summer Solstice while the Winter Solstice was a Pagan festival that eventually grew into Christmas. Even Easter is celebrated as being the first Sunday that follows the first full Moon after the Spring Equinox, the day mid way between the Summer and Winter solstices. So you see, astronomy is more than looking up!

Changing lives A Lucky birthday Los Niños, the charity shop in Sabinillas, between the Repsol service station and the Mercadona supermarket, sells all kinds of stuff to generate funds for poor needy youngsters and children in many parts of the world. The charity has helped educate street children in North Africa, Palestinians living in terrifying conditions, and children caught up in abject poverty in parts of Latin America. One girl spent her life leading her blind mother round town to beg so they would have enough food; Asociacion Niños Necesitados gave her focused private tuition in French, computing and maths and now she is working in the marketing team of a major supermarket. In the Sahara desert the Saharawi people survive as refugees in five camps

where they have been for over 30 years. ANN have sent aid and children s clothing to them. The charity is currently raising funds for a young boy with club feet to have an operation which will enable him to lead a normal life and which will save him from having to have his legs amputated. his legs. Children as young 6 have to work and do business in order to get enough to eat for the day; sometimes they go hungry, and sickness can be a disaster leading to debt and enslavement for life. What’s Boy Boy up to now?

It was Shannon Devoy's 15th birthday recently and a birthday party was held at JK's in Coin. The big surprise was Harold turning up on his lovely Andalucian horse, Lucky, wearing a birthday cake hat complete with candles and Happy Birthday written on Lucky's flank. This caused much amusement to all the customers and many

photos were taken. Pictured is Shannon, an experienced rider, on Lucky with her birthday cake hat!.

Boy Boy is now four and a half, big, powerful and my best friend. Often, due to an ongoing illness, I have to use a wheelchair and he and Sheba are excellent when I take them out, both on and off leash they heel to the chair. Going up or down stairs I hold on to a special large collar and he helps me up and down. If I lose my balance he stands for me to get myself together. Boy Boy follows me everywhere in the house and due to his height I am always touching his head. I would mention that a training dog’s instinct leads them to act differently when an owner who is close has a problem. Of course, being a

Rottweiller, he is an excellent guard dog, but is also a gentleman - when I have visitors they tend to stand back when they see how big he is - like a small pony! Boy Boy likes to walk around with his rope in his mouth looking daft. He also loves tracking, so the party piece is for someone to hide their keys or wallet in the garden, he soons finds the article and drops it in front of them and sits.

A Fête Worse Than Death

Part 1 of a summer story by P. Tate

She was a predator, and like all of her kind she knew the habits of her victims well. This knowledge came from observing her preys’ movements; learning their routines, using this knowledge and her feline cunning to corner her chosen victim and then finally to pounce when least expected! My first indication of her presence came when the man to whom I had been speaking raised his eyebrows in alarm when he noticed her swooping in from behind me. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck rise in dread and I caught a glimpse of her black form from the corner of my eye as she sprang. ‘Hello Tom,’ she purred, ‘I’ve been meaning to speak to you - about the Summer Fete - you are a hard man to track down - you haven’t been avoiding me have you?’ She had an air of dominance as she stood beside me in her black business suit.

‘Oh! Hello Nadia - er - no I’ve not been avoiding you, just a busy man - you know,’ I replied innocently. But as I glanced back to Andy the butcher, he gave another flick of his eyebrows which confirmed that I was truly in the claws of this urban panther.

“…Yes, yes, I know - you’ll have to speak to Allison - I’ve already done that and she’s agreed if you do. So that’s settled it, a dance demonstration by Allison and you for the Summer Fete,” she confirmed, her teeth flashing as she finished me off with her final assault.

‘Hmm - yes,’ she batted away my flimsy excuse and began her attack, ‘I'm organising the Fete activities this year and thought that you’d like to assist.’

“OK.” I whimpered.

“Well - ah - yes of course,’ I said, subdued and now totally in her power, “what did you have in mind?” Visions of the ‘Coconut shy’ and ‘Bat the Rat’ flowed through my mind. “I believe a dance demonstration would be nice - by Allison and you of course …” “Well I …”

“Oh and Tom,” she said with another flash of her teeth as she turned to go, “let’s have something exciting - sexy like a Tango - might get more youngsters to the Church dances - huh?” “A Tango,” I repeated. “Yes, that’s agreed then - see you at the Fete meeting after church on Sunday - bye!” she commanded as she departed the butcher shop with a wave of her hand to Andy and me, searching the street outside for her next victim.

“Mince meat Tom?” chuckled Andy as I turned to pick up my order of sausages from the counter. We both burst out laughing knowing that I’d been well and truly filleted by a professional. I stepped out into the morning sunshine and noticed that Nadia had cornered another victim outside the newsagents. She was the wife of Andrew Curtis, the new vicar who’d replaced Allison’s deceased husband, and a formidable woman. Nadia was an American and bore a startling resemblance to Naomi Campbell, and had even done a bit of modelling to help pay her way through Business College. Her hard work and tenacity resulted in an executive job with a large New York City bank. Andrew had met her there at a charity event sponsored by her bank, they married and she returned to Britain with him, where she shared her

powerful business acumen between a part time consultancy with the London branch of her bank and the running of the church’s extra-curricular activities. She was a strong supporter of the weekly church dances that Allison and I organised. I walked home enjoying the warm weather that for once hadn’t disintegrated into rain during the Wimbledon

fortnight. I thought of what I had just committed myself and Allison - to. A Tango! - it was a dance that required an intimacy between a couple and at the moment our relationship had cooled. We were good dance partners and enjoyed each other’s company, but an unfortunate confrontation with Allison’s daughter Julia had brought a bit of ice into our romance..... A history book in stone - a secret pleasure to be discovered WRITTEN BY Andrea Maclean

rive down to the coast from Benalmadena Pueblo and glance to your left and you could be forgiven for doing a double take - so keep your hands firmly on the steering wheel and don´t gawp until you stop the car.

or appearing magically out of the trees is what appears to be a fantastical fairy palace fit for a princess. But stop to explore and you will discover a magnificent "folly" dedicated to the memory of Christopher Columbus, which was built and designed as a labour of love by a local doctor.

E

steban Martin Martin - a Spanish doctor who lived and worked in the United States for many years - firmly believed that the great explorer Christopher Columbus, commissioned by the Spanish Monarchy to find the "New World", was not, as many thought, an Italian but a Spaniard.

Martin, aged 29, who shouldered responsibility for the Castillo 11 years ago. Now Carlos is hoping to get local council backing for his private monument to continue to develop the building. Carlos plans to open one of the rooms and fill it with books and manuscripts devoted to Columbus and he is developing the gardens too.

enor Martin felt that more needed to be done to celebrate the explorer's Spanish roots and so began his grand project to do just that. Work on building the Castillo Monumento Colomares began in 1987 with the help of just two stone masons, and was finished in 1994. he doctor was fascinated by medieval architecture and taught himself how to build arches. He and the two masons created a magical building that unifies a number of architectural styles - Byzantine, Romanesque, Arabic and Gothic resulting in a history book of 15th century Spanish culture, art and discovery carved in stone. Each landmark is numbered and at No 16 the stern of Columbus's ship forms a glorious tower.

H

e says that although the exterior only is open to view now, the interior of each room is as exquisitely formed as the outside and the hope one day is to throw them all open it would make a spectacular location for a wedding or grand party. “My father bought the land and invested a lot of love and everything he earned to complete this project and now I want to continue to develop his work," said Carlos. He sits in the ticket booth at the entrance and is delighted to answer questions in perfect English.

T

he doctor died aged 76 - but he passed on his passion for the project to his charming son Carlos

T

he monument is open each day, including Sundays. Summer hours are from 10am to 2pm and 5pm and 9pm and entry is 2 euros for adults and 1.30 euros for pensioners and children. From the coast follow the sign for Benalmadena Pueblo - it’s on the right.

A British family has supported Butterfly Children in Spain and the UK by climbing three peaks in 24hours. Geoff Mason, one of the “challengers”, describes the adventure: “After travelling the 450 miles in a cramped mini-bus from Northampton to Fort William the challenge started at 5pm last Saturday evening at the foot of Ben Nevis in Scotland. The highest of the peaks at 1,344m it took the six of us 3 hours to reach the summit. The views were spectacular and we even had to climb down a snow bank (in July)! Upon our return at 10.50pm it was a quick bite to eat before Mr and Mrs Mason Senior began the journey to Scafell Pike in the Lake District. Without much sleep and with a sat-nav taking us

the 'scenic' route we began the second peak at around 5am. Pete, our guide for this mountain, was particularly keen to return as quickly and safely as possible as his daughter was giving birth that day to his first grandchild. We didn't disappoint and returned within 4 hours. Again time was precious so off we drove to Snowdon. With further sat-nav problems we arrived at Mount Snowdon at 3pm which gave us just two hours to climb to the summit to complete the challenge in 24 hours. Despite a lack of recovery time from the previous climbs all six of us made the summit at 4.58pm - 2 minutes to spare! We celebrated with champagne at 1,085m knowing that we had managed to raise 2,000 GBP to share between DEBRA UK and DEBRA Spain!”

A FAbba night out! by Val Jeffries

Sometimes an evening starts out on such a high note that you wonder where it can go from there. This was the case at the ‘Bjorn Again’ concert in Marbella Bullring last Wednesday night. First on was Becky Tate, a very talented performer who, at just 16, is definitely going to go far. Next up was Ruth Lorenzo, whom many will remember from X Factor. What a voice! Such power, such range. Ruth wowed the audience, speaking to them in both Spanish and English. After saying that she always sings in English she proceeded to sing a haunting Spanish song dedicated to her mother

who was in the audience. A complete contrast to her usual rock style which served to demonstrate the extent of her talent. She had the audience eating out of her hands, her closing rendition of Purple Rain was inspirational. Then, just when you knew it couldn’t get any better – on came Bjorn Again with the obvious opening number Waterloo – and the crowd was on its feet – where it stayed for the rest of the evening. The singing was magical, good familiar songs, very often following familiar Abba routines, the dance routines also mirrored Abba closely. A touch of badinage:“My side sings

louder than your side” from the girls. Lots of humour, lots of fun. In Chiquiquita Ruth Lorenzo came back on stage to sing a verse in Spanish to loud acclaim. Then the girls left to change and the guys treated us to a rollocking rendition of Rocking all over the World. Then back to the old favourites, Money, Money, Money and so on. During Take a Chance on Me “Benny” did a rap version to the delight of all – and then it was time for bed – but not until we’d heard and sung along to my personal favourite ‘Thank you for the Music’. So thank you to all these great talents. Evenings like this seem to make the world a happier place.

Tomorrow Thursday 26th is the debut launch night for a new band Mojo Pin at Pógs in Fuengirola. The original spark for Mojo Pin sprang from a musical friendship between Alice Reay and bass player Luis Rivas, later drawing in two more good friends José Huelga as the lead guitarist and Pedro Valdielso on drums. The up front guitarist and singer Alice’s ongoing joke is that most of the music she loves to play was written before she was born. All four share a loving appreciation for similar music, essentially but not limited to rock based great timeless music, poignant lyrics and deep meanings. Led Zeppelin, Killers, Foo Fighters, The Doors and the Black Crows being just a few of the diverse sets they play and play well.

It’s been on the cards that Alice and friends would be inspired to form their own band for some time now. Pógs has hosted some great bands over the years and “Ali” has played in quite a few - but the new Mojo Pin has the makings of one of the best. Pógs is Fuengirola’s leading live music venue and well worth a look-see. Open Wednesday to Sunday it provides an outlet for a lot of the Málaga province talent. Large and air-conditioned and now with two bars since the introduction of the popular Quijote Cocktail bar last May. Whatever your “personal poison” is, no one cuts the dust just like the Pógs cocktail shaker Amy, she makes all the right moves with all the right ingredients every time.

Salt BY PHILLIP NOYCE Starring Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber Mild mannered Evelyn Salt is actually a CIA operative working with undercover agent Schreiber. So far so not Lara Croft. But then Salt's world is turned upside down. A Russian spy claims that the CIA has a double agent whose task is to kill the US President and points the finger at Evelyn. She reckons that sticking around is not going

to be the best idea and goes on the run, using her skills and her years of experience as a covert agent to escape capture, so she can prove her innocence. But going on the lam only raises questions about her motives - so just who is Evelyn Salt? The movie was written for Tom Cruise who bowed out in favour of Knight and Day, and the

lead role still has a masculine cut to its cloth, giving Jolie plenty of opportunities to kick ass. And it has a contemporary feel to it, given that it comes hard on the heels of the discovery in the US of a real-life ring of Soviet sleepers. A must-see for Jolie fans and a summer slice of spy thriller for the rest of us.

More Hellboy?

Spanish movies (PART 2)

Director Guillermo del Toro walked away from the long awaited adaptation of The Hobbit, and fuelled speculation that he might return to helm the latest in the Hellboy franchise. But he reckons the future of Hellboy 3 could lie in the hands of lead actor Ron Perelman - he apparently hates spending six hours in make-up. But del Toro has said that he is up for it, even though the movie could signal the end for Hellboy and Liz Sherman and the director has said that he would find it hard to deal with the heartbreak.

Wall St 2 no delay

L

ast week I left you guys with my top five Spanish movies of all time, we had “El Crimen Ferpecto” at number five,“El Otro Lado de la Cama” at number four and“Muertos de Risa” at number three. Before I continue the count down, I will warn you that things are going to get quite dark.

J

Studio bosses say that the release of Wall Street 2 will not be delayed, despite the news that star Michael Douglas has a cancerous tumour on the throat that will need treatment. The star is keen to continue with prerelease publicity for the movie, in which he reprises his famous role of Gordon Gekko, and is believed to be ready to take to the red carpet for the US premiere on September 24th. Douglas will need an operation followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. His friend, and co-star in previous movies like Romancing The Stone, Danny de Vito, is apparently slated to go to the Zurich Film Festival to pick up the Golden Icon award on behalf of 65-yearold Douglas on October 3rd and to appear at a tribute to the star.

aume Balaguero is one of my favourite Spanish directors You’ll probably know him better for the 2005 “Fragile” and the original to the 2008 “Quarantine” which is “[Rec]”. However, my favourite Balaguero movie, the 2002 “Darkness”, unfortunately is not on my list. The reason this isn’t on the list is because it’s in English, but it is a brilliant movie. This is an intense horror film about creatures and other unspeakable horrors that dwell within the shadows of a decrepit house. The story is also about a phantasmagorical event that occurred in the same area forty years before. It happened during a solar eclipse, an unusual phenomenon that occurs in the region every forty years. An American family moves into the house full of secrets. This family, like so many others has secrets themselves. What seems like an ordinary unit is fragile within.

T

he problem with American horror movies is the lack of surprise, being too predictable and therefore they don’t scare the viewer. This movie plays with clichés of classic scary movies (isolated house, under the bed, cellar, etc) but the timing is unexpected. It has a perfect balance of horror, mystery and true primal fear. If you pay attention to details, you'll find it even scarier as sometimes there are things happening on the edge of the screen, which just add to a great film.

R

ight, that said. Let’s get back to the count down.

Landing nicely on the number two spot is Guillermo del Toro’s “Laberinto del Fauno”. This 2006 Oscar winning movie is set in the fascist Spain of 1944, where Ofelia, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer, escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world. The film alternates between post-civilñ war Spain and the increasingly bizarre, dark and frightening world of the Pan's Labyrinth. As the twin plots progress, they intertwine, with the tasks of Ofelia becoming the choices faced by a Spain at the crossroads. The poignancy lies partly in the fact that the victories of the child are reflected so starkly by the failures of the adult world. The effects are superb, just the thought of Capitan Vidal (above) stitching his mouth up creeps me out!

D

rum roll please……..at the number one spot it “Tesis”! Alejandro Amenabar’s 1996 thriller/horror is a must in any movie collection. “Tesis”rides along the fine line of taboo and myth regarding violence and snuff movies. This plot will have you on the edge of your seat with your hands over your mouth (and sometimes your eyes). The direction is flawless, it’s chilling and suspenseful and his first feature debut.

A

menabar’s name probably sounds more familiar around such titles as “The Others”, “Mar Adentro” or“Abre los Ojos”, but“Tesis”is definitely worth checking out.

T

esis is about Angela a movie student doing a thesis about on cinematic violence. To research her thesis she seeks out the most extreme violence films she can find and accidentally stumbles upon a snuff film depicting the torture and murder of a fellow student from her university. Her investigation begins.

The horn of plenty is offering its ripe fruits to you; something is blossoming and filling your world with vitality and optimism. Mars is joining with Venus to bring more beauty into your life. There is no stopping you now as you move forward through the gateway to abundance and a cornucopia of events. All this joy coming your way could change your perception and allow you to see things in a completely new light. We all need someone in our life - the match of our dreams, that pair of sparkly eyes you have always longed for, that one true heart that can carry yours through thick and thin, through heartache and bliss. This week the focus is all about relationships, making adjustments so that harmony in the home can resume. It is all about finding your own needs and wants and making compromises that take into account the whole picture. A peace offering may come your way this Thursday. This week you are going to retreat from that tidal wave of angst and pressure as you have finally found that date on the calendar to give yourself a break. It really is time to turn your back on all those troubles and make space for you. Rest, relaxation, recuperation and after a few days flat out on your back on a sun lounger, watch out, because along comes that handsome hunk. If you are too tired to party then take a cold shower because things are about to really heat up. Dive into a week of opulence, heady nights full of razzamatazz, passion and emotion. Take a chance, risk your expression, try wearing different colours to bring out the new you that is emerging from the depths. As the revealing begins, a chapter of glamour and spontaneity commences. Will wonders never cease, the spotlight is suddenly on you, select invitations come your way and opportunities abound to expand your social network. Shrewd bargaining in the previous weeks finally comes to fruition, although it may not turn out quite as you expected, but sweep those guilty feelings away with a gesture of good will to a close friend – there is nothing like cheering yourself up by seeing the happiness in another’s eyes. Expect the unexpected and remain adaptable enough to wrap yourself around events as they happen. Life is about to speed up and change its whole appearance. It is time to put the building blocks down and work at putting plans in place. There is a lot of sorting out to do, cupboards to clear, things to organise and people to see. Your energy moves in fits and starts so make sure you take adequate rest in-between projects. They say there is no manual for parenthood, but with your insights you could write volumes on the subject. A few trusted tips to a close friend could bring them the solace they are looking for.

LIBRA

Matters of the heart need a delicate touch Libra. In love you can find that spontaneous and random events might just build a relationship like a house of cards that needs careful handling. It is time smooth out any disharmony on this level. There could be an agreement in the workplace that you are not happy with and you may push for a new decision to be made. As your theory rd September 23 - is put to the test, the pendulum swings your way. nd October 22

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

As it’s high summer now, I thought that a few dips that can be eaten with last week’s falafel recipe, carrot and cucumber batons etc out on the patio would be pleasant. We had an Armenian neighbour back in the UK who would always prepare these kinds of dishes for us and we all had a great time. So, part one this week. Vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike will appreciate this richly flavoured healthy Greek speciality and children will love dipping the vegetable batons.

Houmous (Hummus) Chick Pea Dip Ingredients:

(serves 6)

● One 450g (16oz) can of chickpeas or 225g (8 oz) dried chickpeas ● 1 clove of garlic ● ½ a small onion ● Juice of half a lemon ● 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil ● 1 tablespoon tahini. This delicious sesame spread is found in gourmet stores, or why not use home made tahini (I’ll give you the recipe next week) to further reduce the cost of this recipe. ● Salt to taste. A natural unrefined sea salt gives the best taste.

- If using canned chickpeas drain the contents and rinse the chickpeas in cold water and drain well. - If using dried chickpeas soak in cold water for at least 6 hours and then boil rapidly

for ten minutes then simmer gently for one to two hours, until tender. If you use dried chickpeas it may be worth making a larger quantity of houmous to justify this long cooking time. Drain and leave to cool.

- Chop the onion finely, and crush or finely chop the garlic. Mix all the ingredients in a food processor and blend to a smooth paste. If the mix is very dry add a little water and process to blend.

Variations on the basic recipe To add a spicier flavour to your houmous, why not try adding half a teaspoon each of ground cumin and ground chilli powder to the ingredients when you add them to the blender? Another tasty variation is to add to the mix some red pepper that has been roasted in olive oil and chopped finely, it’s an option to add the cumin and chilli powder as well if you wish.

How to serve houmous Serve the houmous in small bowls, which you may like to decorate with green or black olives and sprinkle with paprika to complement the Mediterranean flavour of the dish. Houmous is great served with sticks of raw vegetables, with tortilla chips or with freshly toasted thinly sliced brown bread. It is delicious served with salad, and the fried chickpea dish Falafel, in toasted flat pitta breads. Houmous and Falafel served this way is a satisfying vegetarian fast food that you can eat on the go. I’ll give you the recipe for Bourek in a couple of weeks time.

CAPRICORN You have high hopes and great expectations but sometimes you can beat yourself up if you don’t meet your own standards or don’t achieve what you wanted to. Also you can feel disappointed when others don’t behave in the way you feel that they should. You are in the process of defining your relationships and how you set your level of expectation. Perhaps you are too December 22nd hard on yourself and others, so give yourself a break and you could feel a lot January 19th lighter.

PISCES

February 19th March 20th

This is a time for self-healing and to re-evaluate what it is you really want. Take the time and space out for yourself, away from the hubble bubble of life, as much as you need to feel refreshed. In this much needed space you will be able to identify the formula, understand the facts and develop the tools to get you from a to b, creating your own future through ingenuity and self development. Surrounding yourself with nature’s elements in the form of crystals may help in this time of transition. There is something impenetrable about you; even bullets would bounce off that toughened ego. A challenge has brought out in you a side that we don’t normally see. The gauntlet has been laid down but don’t forget a strategy is usually the best way to get through to the end; small victories do not always win a war. A cool spell in love sends you glancing at chocolates and flowers wondering if the traditional routes of showing affection are still valued. Arthritis protein 'guards against Alzheimer's'

Fear of falling boosts fall risk

Fear of falling over is likely to increase an old person's risk of having a fall, Australian and Belgian researchers have found.

Fear of falling is common in older people and is associated with poor balance, anxiety, depression and falls. But the researchers said not enough emphasis had been given to the effect of irrational fears on falls. Five hundred Australians aged 70-90 were asked about exercise levels and incidental activity, as well as taking tests for depression and anxiety. All the participants also underwent extensive

medical and psychological checks before being assessed for their actual risk of falling. During the yearlong study, 43% (214) reported one or more falls. The participants were then split into four groups based on the disparity between their actual and perceived risk. In reality, those in the "anxious" group had a low risk of falls - but perceived their risk as high. This was linked to an increased likelihood of depressive symptoms, neurotic

personality traits and poor physical health. Almost 40% of this group had several falls over the year of the study. In contrast, the "stoic" group had a high physical risk of falling but did not think they did. Only one in three experienced one or more falls. The researchers found this outlook offered some protection against falling and was related to a positive outlook on life, physical activity, and community participation.

Nipple piercings link to abscesses

A protein produced in rheumatoid arthritis sufferers appears to protect against the development of Alzheimer's disease, US scientists have said. In people with rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system goes into "overdrive" and produces attacking proteins including GM-CSF. It had already been recognised that people with rheumatoid arthritis were less likely to develop Alzheimer's, but the protective link had been thought to be due to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) taken by people with the condition. However tests with mice have shown this is not the case. In this study, University of South Florida researchers genetically altered mice to have memory problems similar to those seen in Alzheimer's disease, which is a form of dementia. They then treated them - and some healthy mice - with the protein. Other mice - both healthy ones and those with Alzheimer's symptoms were given a dummy (placebo) treatment. At the end of the 20-day study, the Alzheimer's mice treated with GM-CSF fared substantially better on tests measuring memory and learning, and performed at a similar level to mice of the same age without the condition. An artificial version of GM-CSF, a drug

Nipple piercings may be in fashion, but a new study has shown that women who have them are at much higher risk for developing painful, recurrent breast abscesses. The abscesses - pus-filled infections surrounded by swollen, inflamed tissue under the areola - can develop a month to seven years after a nipple is pierced. They recur frequently, are difficult to treat and often require surgery. The study, by breast surgeons at the University of Iowa, is the first to document the risk associated with

nipple piercings, said the lead author. It was relatively small, comparing a control group of women with 68 University of Iowa hospital patients who had breast abscesses not caused by obvious risk factors like breast cancer and radiation. The surgeons found nipple piercing was associated with a 10-to 20-fold increase in subareolar abscesses over nearly six years, from

January 2004 to November 2009. Another risk factor was smoking, with a six-toeightfold increase. Women considering a nipple piercing should be aware that it not a totally benign procedure, the surgeons said. Even if the piercing is done properly, they added, the presence of foreign material in the body can be a focal point for an infection.

called Leukine, is already being used to treat cancer patients who need to generate more immune cells. A spokesman for the Alzheimer's Society said the study provided a possible answer to the long, unexplained question of why rheumatoid arthritis could reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Given the identified protein is already available as a drug that is proven to be safe in humans, he said the time taken to develop an Alzheimer's disease treatment could be substantially reduced but much more research is needed before it can be said for certain that the findings demonstrated in mice would also occur in humans.

Skin care mistakes to avoid Perfect skin is what every woman wants, but despite all the information available - from friends, media, salespeople and dermatologists, many still lack the flawless complexion they crave. This is because even the most well-informed make the following simple mistakes that can be easily avoided. Cleansers: Women often buy high-end exfoliating products and moisturizers, but don't pay attention to what’s actually in them. The experts advise choosing products with few chemicals. Avoid those containing SD-40, isopropyl alcohol, a common ingredient that can be an irritant for acneprone and sensitive skin types, leading to redness, dryness, and in some cases, brown spots and premature aging. Exfoliating: Don't overdo it. Many products today have alpha hydroxy acids to combat wrinkles and fine lines, but if you mixand-match too often - for example, an acid-based moisturizer in the morning and an exfoliating cream at night - you run the risk of inflaming your skin. Blemishes: Leave them alone, or you'll end up with a bigger problem because you break down the follicle wall, allowing bacteria to spread. Use a sulphur mask to reduce the swelling. Moisturising: Avoid overdoing it because it causes more congestion in the long run. Better to invest in a good humidifier, especially if you live in a dry climate. Don’t rely on just water to moisturise the skin. It does help carry oxygen to the skin, but adding essential fatty acids, like what you'd get from eating an avocado, help skin glow. Always remove make-up before you go to bed: Even if it's only a rare occurrence, the problems can cascade into your complexion for a week.

952 960 372 630 700 201

Don't skimp on sleep: Skin repairs itself at night and if you're routinely sleep-deprived, your complexion will show it. Get the beauty sleep you need and you'll wake up to better skin.

People&Fashion A family affair on the cobbles

Harrod's former boss in memorial plea As the anniversary of the death of Princess Diana approaches, it is rumoured that the new owners of world famous luxury store Harrods will remove the memorials to Diana and Dodi Fayed after Dodi's father Mohammed Fayed steps down as chairman in November. The memorials to the couple mark their deaths in Paris on August 31st, 1997. But it seems the new owners of Harrods, the Qatari Royal Family, believe that their removal could lead to the UK Royal Family once again patronising the store.

A memorial unveiled eight months after the car crash consists of photos of Dodi and Diana, a wine glass smudged with the Princess's lipstick from her last dinner and a ring that Dodi bought for her the day before their deaths, which Mohammed Fayed has said was an engagement ring.

Harrods had enjoyed Royal Warrants from the Queen, the Queen Mother, Prince Philip and the Prince of Wales but these were withdrawn in 2000 in the controversy that surrounded the deaths.

In 2005 a second memorial was unveiled - a bronze statue of the couple dancing on a beach underneath the wings of an albatross.

Mohammed Fayed has always believed that the deaths were not accidental and claimed that Prince Philip "masterminded" the crash - and the Royal Family withdrew their patronage from the store. A spokesman for Harrods said that no decision has been taken about the future of the memorials - which have in the past proved to be good for business. An English Heritage spokesman said that there would be nothing to

prevent the removal of the memorials because they did not figure in the assessment of the Grade II listed building´s architectural and historic merit. On Sunday Mr Fayed said in a letter to the Sunday Telegraph that he had taken down the Royal Warrants and burned them because they were a "curse" on the store, and he called on the new owners to keep the memorials as a fitting memory to the People's Princess and his son.

His halfbrother James Roache is also expected to appear in the soap, making it a family get-together for 78-year-old dad Bill. New 4 seater Morgan EVA GT

Motors

Morgan has unveiled the Eva GT at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. And the good news is that it’s a bit of a looker. the design may not make it through to production, but It has the look of a car that’s close to being the finished article. What sets the Eva GT apart is not only the absence of any running boards, but the four seat layout. This isn’t a first for Morgan of course, but expect limited rear legroom

Team Aon still winning despite the performance of their LPG Turbo engines being reduced. At a sundrenched Silverstone, Team Aon’s Tom Chilton won the first two races and team mate Tom Onslow-Cole won the last race to close in on Jason Plato in the BTCC Championship series with the gap in points down to only 14. Chilton won the first of the three Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship races at Silverstone from Tom Onslow-Cole. OnslowCole had started from pole position and led until half distance when Chilton overtook him along the pits straight and from there he was never headed, their LPG turbo Team Aon Ford Focuses running nose to tail to the chequered flag. Onslow-Cole, who set a new lap record during the race, insisted there had been no team orders, saying: "I had one wrong gearchange and that was enough for Tom to sail by." Championship leader Jason Plato and Alex MacDowall were over two seconds behind in their Silverline Chevrolet

Cruzes, Plato passing his teammate

at the start and holding on for the final podium spot – despite his car carrying the maximum 45kgs of success ballast. The team Aon’s Ford Focuses were some half a second a lap quicker than

the rest of the field as they took the top two spots in qualifying at Silverstone, with Tom Onslow-Cole beating team-mate Tom Chilton to pole position. However, TOCA, the Championship organiser then announced the cars’

turbo boost pressure would be reduced from 0.8 to 0.7 bar as would the size of their engines’ inlet restrictors from 36mm to 35mm ahead of the first Dunlop BTCC race at the Northants track. This didn’t seem to affect the results that much as Tom

Chilton also went on to win the second race with Robert Collard getting between the Fords to finish runner-up. As in race one, Tom Onslow-Cole led initially – this time until lap 16 of the 22 – before relinquishing the lead to Chilton who stayed in front from then on to add to his win from the day’s first race. Onslow-Cole, who set the race's fastest lap, thus finished third ahead of Silverline Chevrolet’s Jason Plato and Honda Team Racing’s Matt Neal. As a result, Plato has extended his championship lead to 29 points – almost the equivalent of two race

wins – over the now-tying Neal and Onslow-Cole in second. Chilton, meanwhile, has gained another place and is up to fifth, just ten points behind Neal’s team-mate Gordon Shedden in fourth. The third race continued in the same vein for team Aon, as after a brief safety car period – caused when Martin Depper’s BMW rammed Alex MacDowall’s stalled Chevrolet at the start – Onslow-Cole squeezed his car past O’Neill’s Sunshine.co.uk/ TechSpeed Honda along the pits straight to take the lead and pull clear to win by nearly three seconds from O’Neill who was an ecstatic second. OnslowCole also set the race's fastest lap.

The Bluebird Collection originated when Vettriano, one of Scotland's best-

England bid unbeatable, says Clegg Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has told Fifa inspectors England's bid for the 2018 World Cup is "unbeatable". The Fifa delegation began its four-day visit with a reception at Downing Street. Clegg said: "I believe this is an exceptionally strong, unbeatable bid. We in this government believe in it, we hope that you will believe in it." The hosts for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups will be revealed on December 2nd.

Malaga ready for kick off But are Malaga ready for the big step forward, as new owner Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nassar, a member of the Qatari royal family, hopes that the team will be top five contenders within 5 years. Malaga had their last preseason friendly on Sunday evening at the La Rosaleda stadium, playing host to Parma. After going 1-0 down Malaga upped their game to run out eventual 2-1 winners. The new season gets under way this coming weekend with Malaga taking on Valencia, again at La Rosaleda on Saturday evening 8.00pm kick off. Thankfully Valencia will be without their World Cup star David Villa, who moved to Barcelona in the close-season.

New head coach Jesualdo Ferriera

Malaga start the new season with a new head coach, Jesualdo Ferriera, whose honours read as 3

Portuguese Leagues with FC Porto (06/07, 07/08 and 08/09), 2 Portugal Cups with FC Porto (08/09 and 09/10), 1 Portugal Supercup with FC Porto (08/09), 3 CNID Manager of the Year (Portuguese League Manager) (2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09) and the first Portuguese Coach to win three consecutive titles in the Portugal League. Malaga have also been busy signing new players notably two new goalkeepers Galatto and Arnau, plus Argentine defender Javier Hernan Malagueño, and Brazilian midfielder Sandro Silva. Malagueño has signed for three seasons, while Silva signed for the next four seasons. They are 27 and 26 years old respectively. Portuguese footballer Eliseu became Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser AlThani's first signing at Malaga, as the powerful winger makes a permanent move to Spain from Lazio. Eliseu, who played at Malaga before being transferred to Lazio last season, but he played

the last six months of last season on loan with La Liga side Zaragoza, and was an important player in the team's success in avoiding relegation.

Tiger Woods and wife divorce Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren have divorced, the couple said in a statement posted on the world number one golfer's website.

New goalie Arnau

The other new goalie Galatto

"We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future," the couple said. They said they planned to "share parenting" of their two children. News of the split comes nine months after a car crash outside Mr Woods' Florida home set off revelations that he had been unfaithful to Ms Nordegren. Soon after, several women came forward and claimed they had had affairs with Mr Woods. Woods, 34 subsequently lost several major sponsors, including

AT&T and Gatorade. In February he publicly apologised and admitted that he had been unfaithful to Ms Nordegren, a former model. Details of the financial settlement have not been disclosed, but US media reports suggest the former Mrs Woods will receive over $100m (£64.4m). The divorce was finalised in Florida by Bay County Circuit Judge Judy Pittman Biebel in what was described as a brief hearing in which both Mr Woods and Ms Nordegren were present. Woods took time off from his sport following the revelations

and on his return his recent results have reevealed the distraction caused by his private life. The couple married in October 2004 in Barbados and have a 3-year-old daughter, Sam, and a 19month-old son, Charlie. In a statement released by their lawyers on Monday, the pair asked for privacy "as we adjust to a new family situation". "While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness will always be, of paramount importance to both of us," the joint statement said.

David Rudisha breaks More Team Sky successes 800m world record "This was my first real attempt to break the world record, I knew I was good, I had trained hard," said Rudisha. Kenya's David Rudisha broke the men's 800m world record in a time of one minute 41.09 seconds at an IAAF World Challenge meeting in Berlin on Sunday.

championships yet.It is time to focus on that now and to win a medal at the 2011 World Championships. And then I want to be the Olympic champion. That is my focus from now on."

With the help of a pacesetter, Rudisha hit the 400m mark in 48.65sec and he maintained his pace to the finish. “I feel great but I am also dreaming of becoming the first to run under 1:41," the 21-year-old told BBC World Service.

Rudisha on his record run

"I have been running fast and I now have the world record but I have not won any major

The previous record of 1:41.11 was set by Denmark's Kenyan-born Wilson Kipketer in Cologne in 1997, when Kipketer first tied with and then twice bettered Briton Sebastian Coe's 1:41.73 world-best time, which had stood since 1981.

Edvald Boasson Hagen claimed the points classification jersey for Team Sky at the Eneco Tour by sprinting to third place on the penultimate stage. The Norwegian who also bagged podium places on stages two and four - was led out brilliantly by Greg Henderson on the long closing straight in Heers but it was André Greipel (HTC-Columbia) who proved the quickest sprinter on the day and wrapped up his second stage win ahead of Jürgen Roelandts (Omega Pharma - Lotto). Boasson Hagen's performance also ensured he stayed in third position overall and closed the gap on GC leader Tony Martin to one minute and 22

seconds, but the German's eighth-placed finish means he is now firmly in the driving seat with just one 16.9km individual time trial stage remaining.

Another success for Team Sky had come on stage four courtesy of Greg Henderson after another outstanding lead-out from the Team Sky train. The New Zealander has looked in good form all week in delivering teammate Boasson Hagen to the finish, but on this occasion it was his turn to go for glory. And the plan worked to perfection; Team Sky were to the fore from nine kilometres out on the run-in to Roermond and held their position perfectly as the roads narrowed towards

the finish. Geraint Thomas and Mathew Hayman both put in big turns on the front and Boasson Hagen led Henderson to around the 250 metres-mark before the Kiwi surged past and lunged for the line to take the win. Henderson, who has also won stages at Paris-Nice and Ster Elektrotoer this season as well as starring in the team's debut at the Tour Down Under, was understandably delighted afterwards, telling www.teamsky.com: "They gave me a good chance today to show how fast I can be and I'm really happy I could finish it off for them.” Quotes and report courtesy of www.teamsky.com

A General Medical Council (GMC) panel has been told how Williams became "extremely panicked" after he bit into a fake blood capsule and was challenged about the authenticity of his "injury". He then asked Dr Wendy Chapman (pictured)to cut him and she agreed, panel was told.

Opening day 61 catapults Arjun Atwal to his first PGA Tour title in N. Carolina

DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again The C.O.G.S were back in action last Saturday at the beautifully prepared Santana course. A total of thirty-five players turned up for the event in sweltering heat but despite the temperatures, the scores were very good. Leading the way with a sparkling 38 points was Chris Spoakes and in second place, just behind, was Gary Roaf with 37 points. Third on 34 points was Joe King on count-back from Dave Haworth, Joe’s back nine of 20 points to Dave’s 18. The longest-drive competition on the fourth, was won by Ian Holden and Mark Edmondson was nearest the pin on the second. I managed to get nearest the pin in two shots on the fourteenth while the team prize went to Chris Spoakes, Daryl Rantzen, Joe King and Nick Carwood with a massive 120 points. Four other teams also scored more than 100 points, which just illustrates how good the golf was on the day. The biggest cheer at Leslies Bar during the presentation was for the “special” wine bottle as Mike Brian scored his best ever total of 21 points and the “prize” went to Albert Speight with 10 points. Winner of the separate par-three competition, unsurprisingly, was Chris Spoakes and the good news is that the rollover prize fund now stands at a fantastic 168 euros. It was a really good day out for us all and thanks to the committee and of course Ian and Russ at GolfbreaksinSpain.com. for organising the day. Till the next time Keep your head down Dave.

Arjun Atwal became the first Indian and just the sixth Asian-born player to win on the PGA Tour when he secured a one-stroke victory at the Wyndham Championship. The 37-year-old from Calcutta parred the final hole for a round of 67 and a 20-under-par total as he avoided a play-off with nearest rival David Toms.

Atwal, who did not even have exempt status on tour, only got into this event via a qualifier for four spots ,and he became the first Monday qualifier to win on tour since 1986 and his rewards also included an invitation to next year's Masters, a tournament he has never played.

"That was huge," said Atwal, whose win owed much to a stunning nineunder 61 in his opening round in Greensboro. "I was really nervous over that last putt. My heart rate was probably 150." Atwal, who lost his Tour card in July, began his final 18 holes with a threeshot lead. His advantage was gradually eroded, and, at one stage, he shared the lead with six other players. Atwal, though, birdied the 16th to regain the lead, and as he teed off at the 18th, Toms, who had birdied three of his last

"That will be awesome," he said. "I was supposed to get in when I won the money list in Asia in 2003, because the No. 1 gets in from there, but they somehow gave it to the No. 2 guy, who was from China that was obviously some diplomatic thing he said”.
