Sarkozy vows to 'eradicate' ETA in France The French president spoke out strongly against terrorists and assassins at the funeral of a murdered policeman and pledged that France would not offer a hiding place. The French policeman was killed last week in an exchange of fire near Paris with members of the Basque terrorist group ETA, and President Nicolas Sarkozy vowed to eradicate all the bases of ETA one by one: “We won't let France become the support base of

terrorists and assassins.” Mr Sarkozy was speaking alongside Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the first Spanish PM to attend the funeral of an ETA victim outside of Spain. [...] Continued on Page 2

My dog, Bundle Bear, seems to be much better than he was before his op. He is a big dog and almost 13 years old so, I suppose we're very lucky to still have him and it's great to see him 'getting a spurt on' to catch up with the other two again. Friends have been house or apartment hunting and you'd think with all the property on the market and as they are cash buyers, ideal properties would be coming out of the woodworkt. Maybe we're expecting too much for the money but then, who doesn't want the bargain of the century? We also had some friends out on a golfing holiday and spent a very pleasant evening in Nueva Andalucia at a quiz evening with them all and, by the way, Happy Birthday David! I actually managed to get on the land last Saturday and pulled out a few weeds. Sunday, I moving the stuff around in my kitchens so I shouldn't have to keep running from one to the other to get stuff any more. There's only a couple more weeks to go until Easter and therefore the end of lent and I can have loads of chokkie eggs! I haven't exactly adhered to my no-chocolate lent and have failed miserably on a few occasions – what can I do when half a Twix is offered! Needless to say thatI get nil points for weight loss during that time. Hopeless or what?!

Sarkozy vows to 'eradicate' ETA bases in France [...] Zapatero was accompanied by Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalacaba. Brigade leader Jean-Serge Nérin, 52, was killed during an exchange of fire late on Tuesday last week as police checked the identities of a group suspected of stealing cars in Dammarie-les-Lys, a a south-eastern suburb of Paris. As officers were checking their papers, a second car drove up and opened fire. A man arrested after the shooting turned out to be Joseba

Fernandez Aspurz, aka El Guindi, a known ETA terrorist who is wanted on several charges in Spain. The French police mounted a hunt for four or five men who they believed were with El Guindi and ended up mistaking five men caught on the security cameras in a nearby supermarket as his accomplices. When shown the clip, El Guindi identified them, apparently with the intention of giving his own men more time to escape.

After the clip was shown widely on French and Spanish TV, the men were identified by their relatives as five Catalan firemen who were on a hiking holiday in the region. The Catalan regional government immediately contacted the French authorities, and the men arrived home a little earlier than planned. On arrival at Barcelona's El Prat airport, they said: “We would not be here if it weren't for the Generalitat (Catalonia's regional government).” Posthumous decoration

During the funeral, Jean-Serge Nérin was made a Gentleman of the Legion of Honour. The body of the father of four, who served 20 years as a gendarme, will be buried on Saturday in the former French Guiana where he was born.

ETA on the run The French authorities have been very successful at rooting out members of ETA in recent years, usually in the south of the country,

which ETA used as a bolt hole when things got too hot for them here in Spain. They are gradually being driven further north and are also trying to get a toe hold in Portugal. However, after recent arrests there the group now have to contend with the farreaching arms of three police forces. In the 50 years since it was founded, ETA has killed more than 850 people in its campaign for an independent Basque state.

Red Arrows collide over Crete Teo Red Arrows collided over Crete Tuesday afternoon during the first stage of the Exercise Springhawk. One pilot managed to eject before his aircraft crashed onto the Greek island and was taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder. The second plane landed safely along with the rest of the RAF squadron at Iraklion Airport. The Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed an incident had

occurred during the aerobatic team's preseason training at the Kastelli airforce base and said a service inquiry would be convened to identify the cause of the crash. Photos taken after the accident showed one Red Arrow's tail tip snapped off and damage to the back right of the plane.

Austerity cuts proposed for regions

Zapatero and Obama at their last meeting.

Obama issues summit invite

The government has managed to get the regions to accept spending cuts of €10,000 million over the next four years in an attempt to refill depleted public coffers. At a meeting of the Council for Fiscal and Financial Policy, all the regions except those where the Partido Popular is in power approved the cuts. Measures to be taken include freezing the salaries of public officials and restrictions on regional government contracting. Finance Minister Elena Salgado said on Monday that she

US President Barack Obama has formally invited Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to attend the summit on nuclear security to be held in Washington on April 12th and 13th. Some 40 heads of state and government will attend the summit which will seek effective measures to protect “vulnerable” nuclear material during the next four years to frustrate its use by terrorists. In a speech in Prague in April last year, President

was satisfied with the vote in favour of austerity. Nine regions have already presented their planned austerity measures to the the central government involving cuts of €2,000 million this year. Sra Salgado said she hoped this figure would rise to €3,000 million when the other regions presented their plans.

Obama launched and initiative to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear arsenals, stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons and to present terrorists from acquiring nuclear materials or weapons. During his term as president of the EU, Sr Zapatero has promised to work to guarantee the success of the Conference to Review the Nuclear Weapons Nonproliferation Treaty to be held at UN headquarters in New York in May.

Victims consider request an insult A request by Arnaldo Otegi, the jailed leader of the banned Batasuna party, to be allowed to go home provisionally while his daughter receives psychiatric treatment, has been described as an insult by the deputy president of the Association of Victims of Terrorism (AVT). Batasuna, considered the political wing of the Basque terrorist group ETA, was banned in 2003 for refusing to condemn politically-motivated violence. Otegi, its former spokesman, is serving a

sentence for “exalting” the terrorist group at a public meeting. Angeles Pedraza said on Monday that she wondered if Otegi had ever tried to imagine the sufferings of the relatives of those killed by ETA

terrorists. She pointed out that last year alone the AVT paid more than €500,000 for psychiatric treatment for 2,745 people who had either survived a terrorist attack or were a close relation – often the

children – of the person killed. She said that because of people like Otegi “there are many orphans, because if he didn't pull the trigger he supported the person who did.”

Spanish frigate Compensation on way for Spanish Thalidomide victims rescues pirate According to El Mundo newspaper, the government is about to sign a decree to compensate the Spanish victims of thalidomide, which was prescribed for pregnant women from 1957 to 1963, resulting in the birth of an estimated 20,000 deformed babies in some 50 countries. José Marques, the deputy president of Spanish

victims

Association of Thalidomide Victims (AVITE), told the newspaper that he did not know when the decree would be made public but said the compensation contemplated in it would be between €30,000 and €100,000. He said only 100 people belonged to AVITE but he suspected that some 3,000 people were suffering the effects of thalidomide.

Spaniard 'Torture instruments' Jobless wins BBC prize exported from Spain Amnesty International told the European Parliament's Sub-Committee on Human Rights last week that several EU member states – including Spain - had authorised the export of weapons and restraints to countries where it had documented the use of such equipment in torture. An AI spokesman said at least two companies in Spain - NIDEC and Grupo TDS – are selling US-made handcuffs which deliver electric shocks of up to 50,000 volts. The spokesman said companies were using legal loopholes to evade restrictions introduced by a 2006 law. Only seven of 27 EU member states – Spain, Britain, Bulgaria, the Czech

Republic, Germany, Lithuania and Slovenia had publicly reported such exports. The spokesman said some of the items in question are designed for torture or other forms of illtreatment, and are banned by the legislation. Others, which are designed or marketed for use by medical or security officials, are considered "dual use",

and their trade is meant to be monitored. He said: "Pepper spray is a legitimate security device, however if a company or country is exporting pepper spray to a country where there is evidence of it being used for torture in the past, that should ring alarm bells." He said countries to which the equipment had

been exported included Pakistan, Senegal, Georgia, Mongolia, and China.

Bardem’s adhesion to the campaign is as surprising as that of Pedro Almodavar, as both have been staunch supporters of Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution in the past. The campaign was launched in memory of Cuban dissident Orlando Zapata Tamayo who died on February 23rd after an 86-day hunger strike. More than 23,000 have signed the petition so far, including novelist Mario Vargas Llosa and the Cuban-Venezuelan actress María Conchita Alonso. Cuban journalist Guillermo Fariñas, who went on hunger strike on February 24th, was warned by doctors on Monday that if he did not start eating soon he would die. He vowed he would continue “to the end” in an attempt to get the Cuban government to release 26 jailed dissidents who are in poor health. And last week, images of the peaceful march in Havana by the Ladies in White - as the female relatives of political prisoners are known being violently broken up by the police while progovernment civilians insulted and spat on them flashed across the world's TV screens.

Bush and Clinton fund-raiser visit Former US Presidents George W Bush and Bill Clinton were in Haiti on Monday as part of their fund-raising efforts to aid the earthquake-stricken nation. They visited camps for some of the 1.3 million homeless survivors and met President Rene Preval. President Barack Obama asked the two men to lead US fundraising after the devastating January 12th earthquake. At least 220,000 people were killed and large parts of the

capital, Port-au-Prince and other towns were levelled in the magnitude 7.0 quake. Mr Bush said: "Hopefully, our visit will remind people that Haiti needs help." Mr Clinton said the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund was working to provide money for seed and fertiliser for

farmers, and he pledged to pressure the US Congress to adopt trade legislation to help Haiti's textile industry. The fund has raised $37m from 200,000 donors, including President Obama, who donated $200,000 from his Nobel Peace Prize award. Officials have said $11.5bn will be needed to rebuild the

country and are expected to appeal for that much at a donors' conference in New York on March 31st. The Inter-American Development Bank said it would relinquish $479m in loans to Haiti and the EU said it would pledge $1.35bn in development aid.

Britain to expel Israeli diplomat

Poker heist key suspect arrested

Foreign Secretary David Miliband told Parliament on Tuesday that Britain is to expel an Israeli diplomat over the cloning of 12 British passports linked to the hit-squad killing of a Hamas commander.

German police have arrested a 28-year-old Lebanese man they suspect of being the mastermind of an armed raid on a poker tournament at the Hyatt hotel in Berlin's Potsdamer Platz on March 6th. A heavily-armed gang of four made off with the jackpot

When Mr Miliband demanded that Israel cooperate fully with the investigation into how the passports were obtained, it denied allegations that its agents were behind the killing of Mahmoud alMabhouh, in a Dubai hotel room in January. However, Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency found proof of the cloned passports.

Diplomatic sources stressed the British government was not accusing Israel of involvement in the killing, but the expulsion sends a very strong message of Britain's displeasure at the cloning of UK passports.

Berlin police said in a statement after the arrest on Sunday: "According to the current state of our investigation, the suspect

Two other suspects were arrested earlier last week and a third on Saturday morning at Berlin's Tegel airport.

Last month Mr Miliband described the use of fake UK passports as an "outrage" and vowed that the inquiry would "get to the bottom" of the affair.

Huge hailstones, torrential rains, flooding, landslides and wind gusts of more than 120km/hour hit the western Australian city of Perth on Monday, leaving tens of thousands of homes without power. reporters: "From my memory this would be the most severe weather conditions we've had since the famous May storm in 1994, where we had very, very strong winds and a massive loss of power supply." First Queen of Scots stamp issued

EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News

editorial@thenewsonline.es

The Royal Mail has brought out a stamp featuring Mary Queen of Scots, one of a series showing the seven Stewart kings and queens who ruled Scotland from 1406 until the Union of the Crowns with England in 1603. The stamp series was launched at Stirling Castle, the historical home of the Stewarts, by TV historian Neil Oliver. He said the Stewart monarchy was a fascinating period of

Scottish history, with "many dramatic characters and events". He added: "Mary Queen of Scots is obviously the most famous and colourful of the Stewart monarchs and it is wonderful to see her

represented on a stamp.” It is the first time Mary, who was executed in 1587 at the age of 44, has appeared on a Royal Mail stamp. Stamps marking significant events and figures during the age of the Stewarts are also being

Philip Rule, acting for Jack Richard Foster, said this amounted to a violation of his rights under the 1998 Human Rights Act and a "cruel and unusual punishment" in breach of a statutory duty imposed by the 1688 Bill of Rights. He said Foster should have been given nicotine

patches or gum to satisfy his cravings during the ban. The court was told Foster intended to claim damages under the European Convention on Human Rights if his case succeeds. Mr Justice Collins adjourned the case so more information could be gathered.

No tax rises in Fuengirola Malaga to get Mayor Esperanza Oña said that she will not be raising taxes or other charges made by the Town Hall to fight the economic crisis, even though central government is doing just the opposite. The Mayor said unemployment in Spain is three times higher than in the rest of Europe but the Spanish government was the only one to adopt tax hikes as a way out of the crisis. Sra Oña said she and her team did not agree with that decision and as a result would not raise any local tax or charges such as those for use of the sports or cultural activities or for any other concept.

Community work instead of fines Another innovation in Fuengirola is that young people between the ages of 14 and 29 will soon be able to choose to do community work instead of paying traffic fines, as long as they are not for serious infractions. A working day of between four to six hours will be the equivalent of €30 worth of fine, so a fine of €150 for not wearing a crash

helmet would translate into five days cleaning public gardens or streets, sorting out books at the local library or working on road repairs. To take advantage of the initiative, the person fined should apply to the Fines Department (Departamento de Sanciones) within ten working days of being fined. The ordinance will become law as soon as it is published in the Official Provincial Gazette.

While most of the rights are enshrined in the 2002 Patients' Autonomy Law, it is the first law that sets out clearly in which situations

a person has the right to insist on a dignified death and the procedures doctors and nurses should follow in such a situation.

“We're looking for something comfortable, roomy and user-friendly which will guarantee privacy and be easily accessible for people in wheelchairs.” The historical centre will get the first public loos, which will gradually be extended to busy areas with wide pavements. Darwin expo in Granada An exhibition called La evolucion de Darwin (The evolution of Darwin) has opened at the Parque de las Ciencias in Granada. It occupies more than 1,500 m2 of space and has been co-produced with New York's Museum of Natural History. Park director Ernesto Páramo told reporters that the exhibition would be an excellent learning experience for people who had little knowledge of Darwin's life and work, adding that its rigorous presentation would also satisfy researchers and other professionals. It can be viewed until October this year.

New housing law

MALAGA. The Local Police seized 70 bales of hashish weighing two tons in the ruins of the Baños del Carmen spa early Saturday and arrested 18 men, all from Malaga, as they were loading them from a boat to a vehicle. The Guardia Civil had been monitoring the boat’s passage on a surveillance system and warned the police of its arrival.

SEVILLE. A new law approved by the Junta de Andalucia in February giving people with low incomes the constitutional right to decent housing, came into effect last Saturday. To be eligible, a person must be registered on his/her local council’s list for protected housing (VPO) and be able to prove that he/she does not own or have rights to any property.

HUELVA. The Junta de Andalucia has taken charge of a 17-year-old Senegalese youth who was incorrectly registered as being 65 after a medical examination when he arrived illegally on a boat two years ago. Since then, he has been living in a hostel paid for by a compatriot and is selling pirate CDs in the streets. He is now in a centre for minors.

MALAGA. The arrest of nine Mafia capos on the Costa del Sol last year has convinced other capos that it is no longer a haven for them. The Spanish police have a 100% success record for arrests under international warrants and the local authorities say the capos are now opting to hide out in North Africa where vigilance is laxer.

Peace of mind with Avalon

ESPAÑA

What do I need to consider when buying a funeral plan here in Spain? When people consider buying a funeral plan the main reason they do so is to protect their family and loved ones from the potential problems death in Spain can bring. 2009 has been a challenging year for many, with very difficult, unprecedented economic circumstances affecting so many people; here at Avalon you can be reassured your financial wishes are in good hands. Another year of record sales reported and continued expansion within the company, Avalon is well positioned to continue with its solid progression in 2010 and beyond. The team here in Spain and the UK extend a special thanks to our customers who have recommended our services and all those who assisted Avalon in 2009.

Avalon funeral Plans · Three Plans

· flexible Payment

We offer three different plans: The Balmoral, Windsor Way and Britannia. Avalon´s three services are inclusive of the disbursement expenses relating to the doctor, minister and crematorium fee.

We don´t carry out credit searches as this is not a credit agreement. The client agrees to a payment plan to suit their own needs. So if you want to put half down as deposit, or part, or a minimum then this can be done. Plans can be taken over any term up to 10 years but if you decide to pay off the plan earlier, this can be done. The plan is not like taking out a loan where you are bound by constraints. It´s completely flexible provided it is paid up before the client passes away.

The first, The Balmoral, is a simple no-frills cremation for members who require the minimum of fuss and ceremony. This plan may be appropriate for single people.

Avalon S.L. Avalon is the market leader in this service we do tick all those boxes. Local staff & registered office in Spain cif B54004809 - Avalon S.L., calle Albatera 1-68, La finca, 03169 Algorfa, Alicante, Spain

Our most popular plan is The Windsor Way, specially designed for couples, and among other additional services, gives more time.

· Service

The third plan, The Britannia, is essentially a repatriation package - it is more expensive than the other plans, but it works out a lot cheaper and less hassle to do a plan via us rather than trying to arrange it yourself.

The reason Avalon do so well in Spain is because of the service we offer to expatriates. Nothing is worse than when somebody you love passes away, and it´s even worse if you don´t speak Spanish, have no understanding of the systems, and you have no idea where to start with the arrangements.

A plan-holder recently stated: "Having taken out a Britannia Plan, I know that all is taken care of for my next of kin. I will be returning to Scotland to be buried in the churchyard I have chosen and my children won´t have to worry about who to contact to arrange this. The plan provides all the cover I need. Memo from Madrid

Martin Delfín

Writes for the English language version of El Pais

Dangerous friends

Keystone cops

Dear Mr Prime Minister:

I

A

friend rang me from Caracas on Sunday and after listening to her for ten minutes going on about what Hugo Chavez had been up to since she last rang, I said: “We’re well up here with what’s happening there because of the ETA thing.” She said: “What ETA thing?

I

then had to fill her in on developments since Judge Eloy Velasco said on March 1st that an investigation launched in 2008 had turned up evidence demonstrating the Venezuelan government’s co-operation in the illicit collaboration between the Colombian FARC – a former guerrilla group which now lives off kidnapping and protecting drug lords – and ETA, the Basque terrorist group. Her ignorance confirmed that the Chavez government is keeping a lot of things from the Venezuelan people.

E

ven so, my friend said she was not surprised - Chavez’s links with the FARC have been an open secret for years – in Venezuela, Colombia and the US. And allegedly repentant former members of ETA have been living in Venezuela since the then Socialist PM Felipe Gonzalez asked the Venezuela government to take them off his hands back in 1986.

N

ow, I know any criticism of your relations with both Cuba and Venezuela irritate you enormously. But perhaps you should start listening – for a change - to what others are saying about Chavez and Castro. Just this Monday, Felipe Gonzalez told the US-EU Forum being held at New York University that what Venezuela has is a “military-rural caudillismo (leadership) with an oil hose”. He described the country as a “regressive Utopia” which has little to do with the revolution proposed by the Soviet Union in its day- a direct reference to Chavez’s claim to represent 21st century socialism.

I

n defence of your relations with Chavez, you keep pointing out that he was elected democratically. However during his 11 years in power he has nibbled away at all the democratic freedoms that Venezuela enjoyed – and which its people had cultivated zealously since they forced out the last dictator – Marco Perez Jimenez – in January 1958.

C

havez’s steady destruction of democracy should not come as a surprise if we remember that he tried to overthrow the legitimately elected – but very corrupt - government of Carlos Andres Perez on February 4th, 1992. As a result, when he decided to pursue through the ballot box what he failed to obtain by force, many middle and even some upper class Venezuelans voted for him, believing his promise that he would rid the country of corruption. However, his father and mother – former schoolteachers – and his brothers – who never seem to have done a day’s work in their lives – now own most of Barinas State where he was born.

To: Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero La Moncloa Palace, Madrid From: A well wisher

H

e has passed a series of laws to take back the powers and independence from central government enjoyed by the country’s States – the equivalent of the so-called autonomous regions here which have a high level of decentralization, as set out in the Constitution.

H

e has closed down Venezuela’s oldest TV and radio station – Radio Caracas Television – which was also one of the most popular. It’s crime? Refusing to toe the government line. The same fate awaited over 20 radio stations around the country and another 36 are about to be chopped. And he is currently using every trick in the legal and non-legal book to force the only surviving independent TV station – Globovision – to throw in the towel.

H

e recently declared war on the Internet because, as he says: “The internet cannot be a free thing where people can say what they want – each country has to impose its own rules and norms.”

T

rying to curb websites that allow the downloading of copyrighted material – as your government is doing – is one thing. Muzzling the most efficient communications tool of all times is quite another.

A

s for Cuba, you must have noticed that two of your staunchest supporters – Spain’s most famous film director, Pedro Almodovar, and Pilar Bardem, a well known actress in her own right who just happens to be the mother of one of the country’s few internationally known stars, Javier – have joined a campaign aimed at getting the Cuban government to release some 200 political prisoners. If I were you, I’d tell Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos to give up his quixotic notion that being nice to the Castro brothers will somehow lead to the more open society that the Cuban dissidents want.

C

havez and the Castro brothers are the antithesis of everything the Spanish Socialist Party is supposed to stand for. You should be defending your people’s beliefs in democracy and human rights and not worrying about investments made by Repsol, the Spanish banks and hotel chains, who knew what they were letting themselves in for when they went into Venezuela.

t seems inconceivable that in this day and age, when law enforcement authorities have the best technology at their disposal, simple mistakes in identifying suspects which cause more harm and embarrassment for everyone involved still happen. The error in mislabelling five Catalan fire fighters as ETA terrorists last week was an inexcusable incident that could have been avoided. The five mates had been captured on a closed-circuit camera shopping at a Carrefour store in Dammarie-les-Lys, a small town some 60 kilometres outside Paris on March 16th. A retired police officer heard them speaking Catalan – he thought it was Spanish – and told his colleagues they must be the guys who are wanted for taking part in a stolen-vehicle spree, which resulted in the murder of a French police officer, Jean-Serge Nérin, just hours later.

to the Soviets, actor Timothy Hutton tells FBI agents that they are nothing but “Keystone cops” for not detecting his espionage activities earlier. The unflattering term has since been used by the media to described the US investigative force when something goes awfully wrong in their investigations. No doubt that it is a description that can aptly apply here.

Rich man, poor man... thief

F

rench police then showed the video to one of the ETA suspects who was arrested during the shoot-out, who identified them as his fellow terrorists, apparently to give the real ones time to get away. Without any further tests, the video was circulated on Friday in the Spanish and French media with a request asking the public for its help in identifying the five. You can imagine the reactions of the fire fighters’ families when they saw the video appear on their television and computer screens. And what was supposed to be a relaxing long holiday weekend of mountain-scaling and other outdoor activities turned into a frightening ordeal with the fire fighters looking over their shoulders waiting to be arrested or worse, gunned down by hot-headed French police who had vowed to seek out their colleague’s killers at all costs.

T

he five kept to themselves in their hotel room that night and called their supervisors in Catalonia to inform them what was happening. It wasn’t until Catalan government representatives contacted French authorities to tell them about their egg-inface incident that the matter began to clear up. “Without looking for it, we were branded as ETA terrorists,” Óscar González, one of the fire fighters, told RNE. The video was immediately pulled by all the media and replaced with an updated story about the faux pax created by Spanish and French police.

W

hy were Spanish authorities caught off guard? Holidays, it seems. According to law enforcement sources, there was no terrorism expert on duty on Friday March 19th, the feast of St. Joseph, when the French sent over the video. Interior ministry officials trusted their French counterparts who in turned trusted the two versions of the same story offered by a captured terrorist and a retired policeman who believed he saw and heard something that proved to be inaccurate. In the 1985 movie “The Falcon and the Snowman,” which is based on the true story of two young friends who sell government secrets

A

fter serving 15 years behind bars, Luis Roldán, Spain’s first civilian head of the Civil Guard, walked out of Zaragoza prison on Friday after serving time for embezzling some €10 million. Once called the most hated man in Spain, Roldán’s corrupt antics and subsequent escape to Laos where he hid out for 10 months in the early 1990s, helped bring down the Socialist government of Prime Minister Felipe González. The 66-year-old Roldán said he had no money or any place of his own to go as he hopped on a bus in front of a throng of reporters who were waiting for him outside the prison. However, an investigation by El País last month found that Roldán has at least two luxury homes – an apartment in Paris and a vacation villa on the Caribbean island of St. Bart’s – that are registered under third parties so that authorities have been unable to confiscate them. At the height of his power, Roldán squirrelled away a fortune in public funds, with the help of Spanish spy Francisco Paesa, in offshore bank accounts. Authorities don’t know the whereabouts of Paesa who was last seen in Paris a decade ago and have been unable to track down the stolen money. Roldán told reporters that he had to pay for Paesa’s sins because the spy duped him and took off with the loot. Again, here we have another episode of Spanish law enforcement coming up way too short in closing the case of what has become the biggest embezzlement investigation in all of Spain ’s history. Maybe 15 years isn’t too long to wait to bask safely under the rich sun of the French Caribbean.

A. Abell

J E Swenson Torremolinos I thought it important to point out another serious problem that seems to be totally ignored by the media - wood smoke. The WHO estimates that worldwide there are 1.6 million deaths worldwide each year from wood smoke from fireplaces, stoves and cooking fires. Wood smoke is full of toxic chemicals that cause cancer and other diseases. It is the leading cause of lung cancer in developing countries and the tiny particulates it spews into the air are especially dangerous. These particulates cannot be expelled from the lungs and can enter the blood stream and travel to any part of the body and cause cancer. It is time for health officials and governments, if they really care about health, to ban the burning of wood

and require all fireplaces etc. to burn only natural gas, which is far less polluting and dangerous. we are surrounded by chimneys belching out stinking carcinogenic smoke causing us to limit our time outside and to reduce the number of walks we like to take, not to mention making our clothing stink. One can choose not to go into a smoky bar, but no one can avoid breathing the air that surrounds us. I urge all those who burn wood to think of the damage they are doing to their neighbours' health and the environment. If you want a fire, be responsible and considerate and install a simple gas log, which is probably cheaper too.

By email I am prompted to write in response to the e-mail sent to you by L. Cassidy. I, like the majority of our friends thoroughly appreciate the “Local Voice” political update written by Muriel Pilkington which gives an insight into Spanish current affairs and their background. I hope and expect that many others have sprung to her defence.

Saturn, the return of the Lord of The Rings

As for L. Cassidy, he is undoubtedly an ardent socialist and most of his ilk always accuse anyone who does not agree with their political views of being a “Fascist” or on this occasion a potential B.N.P. supporter. Such reaction is both intolerant and childlike.

Of all the objects in the night sky, the most beautiful has got to be the planet Saturn. Saturn was the first thing I ever saw through a neighbour’s telescope when I was a little boy and I became interested in astronomy from that day. And this month Saturn reaches its closest to Earth when it will be directly on the opposite side to us from the Sun. It rises at sunset, is due south at midnight and sets at sunrise, making it perfect for observing. Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and is the second largest planet in the solar system after Jupiter, and like Jupiter it is not made from rock like the Earth but instead is nothing more than a giant ball of hydrogen gas. It takes Saturn about 29 ½ years to orbit the Sun and until 1781 when Uranus was discovered it was believed that Saturn was the last planet in our Solar system. It was Galileo who first looked at Saturn through a telescope and he described it as a planet with ‘ears’ because of its strange appearance to him. What he was seeing was Saturn’s

famous ring system but he couldn’t comprehend a planet with rings. It is Saturn’s rings that make it such a spectacular sight through even a small telescope or binoculars, once you have seen them it is something that you’ll never forget. The rings are not solid but are made from billions of tiny pieces of rock and water ice that are orbiting around Saturn’s equator. They stretch out to over 120,000km but are no more than 10 metres in thickness. They are also divided into many separate rings with gaps between them, one of the gaps, the Cassini division, is wide enough to be seen from Earth. The rings are not at their best at the moment, because as Saturn orbits the Sun it is on a slight tilt so sometimes the rings are ‘fully open’ and at the end of last year the rings were seen edge on that made them disappear as seen from Earth. They are beginning to open up again but it will take another 8 years before we see them in all their glory.

Nobody is really sure where the rings came from but they are probably the remains of one of Saturn’s 61 moons that broke up into a billion pieces. Saturn is not the only planet to have a ring system, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune all have rings but none are as spectacular as Saturn’s.

Fuengirola Astronomy Society. If you would like to know more about the planets and especially Saturn I will be giving an illustrated talk at the Fuengirola Astronomy Society tomorrow evening (Thursday March 25th) 8.00pm at the El Coto bar and restaurant along the Avenida de Mijas near Fuengirola and weather permitting we will be able to go outside and look at Saturn through one of the many telescopes there. So often in my classes I emphasis the importance of walking and talking to a dog. Dogs love it when you speak to them, you will find if you continually talk softly to your pet this will make your pet pay more attention to you and not stray far from you off the leash. You will also be surprised that if you talk just above a whisper how much your dog can hear. You can experiment by softly calling the dog back, you will find that you will get an immediate response. Of course do not forget to tell your pet how pleased you are that he came back. Dogs love rewards and we have many ways of

rewarding a dog, but in my opinion the best way is with the voice and of course a few strokes. Those that have a problem can write to me at david@thedogman.net and those that might want a one to one consultation call me on 610 868 748.

And if the rain falls, then the processions are cancelled. For the man granted the honour it is an opportunity to play a significant part in one of the most important and moving commemorations in the Spanish calendar. But it is his only chance. And if it should be rained off, then next year it will be an opportunity for someone else from the town. emana Santa dates back to the 16th Century when the Catholic Church decided it needed to educate its congregations about the events surrounding Christ s crucifixion. The Church believed it needed to present the story of the Passion of Christ in a way

that ordinary men and women could understand, and that the best way was through a series of processions through the streets of each city, town and pueblo which would depict scenes from the fall, and the rise again, of Jesus Christ. he style and the mood may vary, but the component parts are the same in this most passionate and unforgettable experience. Religious fervour and centuries old tradition are linked to a sense of celebration. In the world renowned processsions in Seville, visitors come from around the globe to watch as the magnificent and enormously valuable "tronos", the huge floats bearing the images of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, are borne through the streets by the cofrades, members of the Cofriados or Brotherhoods who care for and maintain them.

T

T

hese magnificently decorated ornate thrones, which are incredibly heavy and are shouldered by dozens of "penitents" - depict religious scenes and figurines and they too have to be protected from the elements. Heavy rain will drive them back into their secure holding place, where they will stay safe until the next year. alaga too has processions that take the breath away - and it really is not necessary to be religious to find the spectacle deeply moving. But the thrones, and the Brotherhoods, with their famous robes and cone shaped head gear, are not just a sight to be seen in the big towns and cities. Look in any shop window in the smaller towns and villages throughout Andalucia and you will find the posters proclaiming the event. All are welcome -

M

tourists and townspeople will rub shoulders. And although the Passion Play inspires real depths of emotion, it is typical of Spain that the rest of the week is infused with a real sense of celebration. So look for the posters and enter into the spirit of your home town, and if you should have visitors this Easter, then introduce them to one of the most significant parts of Spanish cultural history.

ABOUT

Pógs- the place to party Heart fm has a new address The big St Patrick’s Day party at Pógs last Wednesday certainly lived up to all expectations with three live bands liberally laced with Irish good will and more than a drop of the “Black Stuff” it went well. Everybody is Irish on March 17th - that’s the beauty of the event - it is a global celebration that transcends all borders and Pógs does the day proud. First band on stage were local favourites Shack– Attack, always up for a laugh Steve Nelson sported an outrageous bright green beard and a wacky pseudo Druid Celtic outfit, but it didn’t affect his voice or the show, a deadly first set with a guest appearance from an up and coming North Manchester rocker guitarist Matthew Goodwin and a lovely Irish

Local radio station 95.7 Heartfmspain held a very successful official opening of their new home at the Communications Centre at Poligono La Rosa in Alhaurin el Grande. Pat and Lee Jay and the 95.7 Heartfm team (pictured right) were on hand to welcome over 200 guests to their new centre.

ballad or two from Danny Brown. Monkey Tennis were one man short and in a bit less costume than Shack-Attack, undaunted they performed really well with a fair old selection of Irish rock and other foot tapping classics. And finally that excellent band Traffic Jam, (pictured above) in their usual fine form provided the finale with the Spanish lads

laying on plenty of U2 tributes in honour of the day. The all day event started at 3.00 pm and by 11.00 pm Póg's was absolutely bursting at the seams, the dance floor was full and a great atmosphere abounded which went on to the early hours. Hell of a Craic with more of the same to follow in the coming weeks.

The cutting of the tape was performed by the Mayor of Alhaurin el Grande D. Juan Martin Seron together with a number of civic dignitaries from the Ayuntamiento, including Micaela Naranjos, the newly appointed head of the Foreign Residents Department. Also taking part was a number of small businesses under the

banner of “What Women Want”. Organised by Sue Hart, there was hand made jewellery, soaps and perfume, cakes and pastries, fashion, and plenty of drinks and nibbles on hand to keep the party flowing. Overall the opening was a roaring success with people from local businesses attending plus local musicians and friends. Heartfmspain

would

like to thank all the people who attended the opening and also to all their listeners around the world who sent their messages of congratulations... it means a lot to them. 95.7 Heartfmspain is an inland radio station covering the area from Alhaurin el Grande in the South to Alora in the North, from Monda in the West and to Malaga in the East.

They will put themselves to the test, and push themselves to the limits of endurance by riding two quad bikes from Alhaurin to Timbuktu in Africa. The trip has never been done before on quad bikes or by women and they are raising money for Macmillan nurses, the CUDECA hospice, and the medical centre in Alhaurin, plus they want to make donations to schools they pass en route. The journey will last more than 5000 kilometres and they will be leaving Alhaurin on October 9th 2010. The trip is in memory of Katrina's grandmother, Lillian Skinner, and Margo's mother Joan Porett, both of whom died from cancer. They will be doing this

Katrina says: “I was driven by love, following the loss of my grandmother Lillian Skinner, as well as a sense of adventure and achievement. I could not achieve what the Macmillan nurses do every day - caring, supporting, and befriending people dying of cancer and their families, neither can I help my grandmother now, but I can do something to help someone else and so can you!” Margo added: “I echo Kate’s sentiments and just want to say that we will be organising fund raising events until we leave and look forward to receiving support in these and in any way people feel they can help, so please visit our web page www.two2timbuktu.com and help us to help others. The Blind Side W

BY JOHN LEE HANCOCK Starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Kathy Bates Sandra Bullock picked up the best actress Oscar for her role as Leigh Ann Tuohy, matriarch of a wellto-do white family, who takes pity on Michael Oher, a shambling black homeless teenager, in this remarkable true story. The drama tugs at the heart strings as the rags to riches, inspirational story

unfolds and the Oscar was a reward for what can be justifiably described as one of Sandra Bullock's best performances. Leigh Ann has faith that Michael will respond to nurturing, and after she enrols him into the local school he turns out to be a great American football player. The film follows his

progress as he adapts to his new surroundings - the boy has a proper bed for the first time in his life. The support given by the family paid off Michael continued to thrive in the Tuohy household and is now studying at college - a feel good story which has done great business at the box office.

LATEST DVD RELEASES

The Twilight Saga:

New Moon BY CHRIS WEITZ Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson The second part of the vampire saga smashed the box office and the juggernaut is set to continue on its allconquering way with part 3 in the pipeline. Eager fans desperate to

buy the DVD for part 2 did not have to wait until the shops opened normally - a number of UK outlets opened at midnight on Sunday so fans could get their fix early.

The Princess and The Frog BY JOHN MUSKER, RON CLEMENTS Voices by Anika Noni Rose, John Goodman The perfect Easter treat for youngsters - and adults too will warm to this traditional Disney animation. It gives a

modern twist to a classic tale and features a great score from Randy Newman.

e have just watched Clint Eastwood’s latest cinema release Invictus at the cinema in Coin. It’s a film about rugby, which doesn’t interest me much. It’s about South Africa, which is somewhere that I have never been or wanted to go to. It’s also about prejudice and forgiveness, hope and triumph against the odds.

A

s a film it was well put together, the acting was fine although some of the accents were a little off-key at times and the ending was something you could have guessed at even if you didn’t already know your Rugby World Cup history, which of course, I didn’t. But a strange thing happened in the cinema that made you realise that the film had left its mark. As the credits started rolling, no-one left their seats! In the last year and a bit we have had over 20 films in English at La Trocha and I can’t think of another one where people were so moved to stay put at the end.

I

nvictus has Morgan Freeman playing Nelson Mandela and it has some scenes where the rugby players visit the prison where Mandela was held for 27 years. There are references to the changes brought about by the abolition of Apartheid and the fears that both black and white South Africa had for the future but actually the film is really just about inspiration, not so much about the history of the regime change that took place.

H

ow much is actually true and how much is down to Hollywood and author John Carlin who wrote the book ‘Playing the Enemy’, on which the film was based, I’m not sure. Either way it was a good film and an even better cinema experience. Freeman is totally believable, helped along the way with an amazing wardrobe of highly patterned shirts that just scream MANDELA!

T

he worst atrocities always seem to kick up the most inspirational characters. Steven Spielberg’s telling of the story of Oskar Schindler is one of those films that heralds the bravery and humanity of people who do good things despite the prevailing conditions.

S

chindler’s List became one of Spielberg’s best films ever and won seven Oscars (should that be Oskars?). It led to the formation of a project to record the memories of holocaust survivors and the money that the film generated funded several other related projects in both film and humanitarian works.

O

n the face of things an ex-beauty queen should be far removed from the likes of Mandela and Schindler but nevertheless we are talking movies here and the feel good factor of Stephen Soderbergh’s film Erin Brockovich, about an untrained file clerk who brings down corporate America, is pure magic. Broke, struggling as a single mum and angry at the legal system that let her down when she tried to claim following a car accident, Brockovich gets a job with her lawyer and stumbles across a cover-up that proves the link between the ill health of a local community and the pollution of its water supply.

gain it is a true story and that’s what makes it inspirational, helped along by a brilliant Julia Roberts as lead character and Albert Finney as her long suffering lawyer/boss/partner. Roberts won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her part in the film and deservedly so. The real Erin Brockovich on the other hand went on to champion environmental causes across the States as well as doing consultancy work for court cases involving asbestos poisoning in America and Australia. Erin Brockovich even had a cameo role in the film about her own story. She played a waitress called ‘Julia R’ – a nod to Julia Roberts who was playing Erin Brockovich at the time. Only in Hollywood eh?

So many desires and passions but where do you start? Start with the one that is shouting the loudest, put in the effort and watch it take form. The heavens are urging you to concentrate and dedicate yourself to one thing at a time and you will be presented with one opportunity after another. This week you could be questioning someone’s rules - you are likely to become rebellious if the rules do not fit your reasoning, but sometimes we have to work within a system, in order to change it. The link between the past and the present is becoming stronger right now and this will help you weigh things up and get you moving. There are other signs that move faster than yourself – do you really want them to steal your thunder, when you have steadily put so much in? The answers to your questions will be found in opening up a channel of communication and really listening to what is being said. You wish a drama to be over with but there are a few scenes to play out yet. There is an urgency about you that wants to get things done, anything that has been playing on your mind you will want to sort out and clear the decks. The spring bug has definitely affected you, Gemini! Changes are happening fast in your life, so fast you may feel frustrated with yourself as you struggle to keep up with it all. You don’t have to sail this ship all alone though - there is someone prominent in your life that is willing and able to man the deck. A turn of events may require you to spend some time and money on helping another out, the only word of caution here is to make sure that your needs are sorted first, then with what is left be generous and go ahead and help someone that needs your support. Your kindness will be repaid tenfold in the weeks to come and will not be forgotten. There are some shifts occurring that are effecting you emotionally right now, don’t doubt – trust – it is the only way forward. With Mars moving direct in your sign it will be igniting the spark that feeds your determination to change anything that is causing you discomfort. Choose your words with care this week and make sure you come across with complete sincerity; a forceful verbal approach may not get the same results. In some area of your life you have waited long enough, you have given circumstances plenty of time to sort themselves out. Maintain your commitment and push forward with tact. There is one relationship in your life that constantly comes up for reassessment and this week an age-old quarrel may raise its head again. You have to ask yourself if the relationship is worth the effort and fuel it takes to calm the turbulence down again. Other relationships flourish and there is a natural flow of give and take. You have confidence, skill, diplomacy and talent that will work in your favour - providing you have enough self-esteem to know that you deserve all the success coming your way.

LIBRA

There is a vital part that you have to play that only you can. Although you may feel like a small cog in a giant machine, if you were taken out of your place, the machine would cease to function. The choices you are making are having a huge impact on your surroundings and essentially you hold the key to the outcome of a situation. Be strong in your communications with others this rd September 23 - week so they understand where you are coming from. nd October 22

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

Let us start at the beginning – your situation is more secure than you think, your relationships are more steady than they feel. The problem is your senses are heightened right now and this is making you feel more sensitive than usual, it probably feels as though everything is precariously and delicately balanced and could fall at any moment. Take a step back, take a deep breath and continue onward with steady certainty on where you are going and what you want.

SAGITTARIUS This is a process of transition for you as you are rapidly accelerating with your personal growth and development. As the changes have been occurring you may have felt as though your finger has not totally been on the pulse, sometimes, events occurring behind the scenes can turn out to be a nice surprise. This week it will be more important for you to show empathy and nd November 22 - understanding towards another rather than to push your point across to get st December 21 a premature outcome.

CAPRICORN A contract could be on the cards - something you have been working steadily towards for a while may begin to bear fruit. Follow your instincts this week even if others are opposing you, stand your ground, dig your heels in, you know that you are right on this one. Fear of the future is your only enemy, so do not dwell on what may be, but concentrate on what is. Inwardly you know December 22nd how to proceed, be brave do things differently, do them your way. Money can’t buy you the thing that you dearly need right now but patience and trust can get you there in the end. You may have felt as though you were winning a long-fought battle and that sense of edge and excitement kept you going, but lately it may seem as though you are lagging behind and filled with a sense of depletion. This week it may not feel as though things are going your way but by being patient you are setting yourself up to gain ground tomorrow. All you need is a little bit of good fortune to go with your determination, ingenuity and intelligence then all will be well. Someone close to you has some luck coming their way too and by working closely with this person the luck doubles. It is time to let go of the past for good and break ground into new territory. Life is about to become richer, deeper and more meaningful in every way. Then you can promote the fact that miracles really can happen.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Last week I said that we were going to look at growing some of our own herbs but, as the weather is still 'iffy' to say the least, we're going to have a recipe that has been sent to us from the lady who has the Lujos company advertised on the health and beauty pages. She produces and sells pure olive oil from her finca that she sells and here's a recipe that she gleaned from one of her Spanish neighbours. This is a one-pot recipe that they make for the men that have been working on the land all day.

Cazuela - Yunquera style

(Serves 6)

Ingredients: ● 2 heads garlic ● 2 onions ● 4 green peppers ● 2 fresh tomatoes ● Several broad bean pods ● 1 piece dried salt cod, about 5 inches ● 2 pounds pork short ribs ● 4-5 large potatoes, cut rough into pieces ● 1 dried hot red pepper ● 1 chicken stock cube ● Rice (risotto or cazuela rice) ● Coloring powder (i.e. saffron, optional) ● Olive oil

Method ● On an open fire or gas burner, slightly char the garlic and cod direct on the fire. (or on the burner if cooking indoors) When cool, split the garlic into cloves and the cod into pieces.Add the short ribs to a large pan with the oil, and turn a few times until the meat is brown, then add the potatoes and other vegetables and turn a few times. Cover with water. Add

enough colouring powder to slightly tint the mix. ● Add the garlic and cod, stock cube, and the hot pepper then cook until the potatoes are nearly tender. Add a handful of rice for each person, then add the tomato; cook for about another 15 minutes or until the rice is cooked.

Health&Beauty RESEARCH

Does wine really help digestion? The right wine with a meal can enhance flavours and stimulate conversation, but can it really help digest the meal, as suggested by authorities through the ages, even the Bible? (“Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake.”) Scientists are still working on it, with mixed results. Some have found that alcoholic beverages speed up the passage of food through the stomach and stimulate gastric juice while others maintain there is little effect. Now a German study seems to explain the discrepancy: it found that fermented drinks (wine, sherry and beer) had an effect, unlike not fermented and distilled ones, like rum, cognac and whiskey. Other studies explain why red wine and red meat pair so well – protein softens the wine’s

tannins, while red wine helps counteract potentially harmful substances such as oxidized fats called malonaldehydes, or MDA, released when meat is digested.

Beauty Tip

Love those dimples In the past thousands of people have let their dimples get to them and have paid millions to get them removed. Now the tables have turned, as others are actually paying to have them put on their faces. They are now available through cosmetic surgery and it is quite a fad that has hit the States. Dr Gal Aharonov, a certified facial plastic surgeon with a practice in Beverley Hills, has had people flying in from all over the world asking for this operation. There are no statistics on how many dimple-plastics are performed each year in total but the dimple fabrication procedure has recently popped up on beauty forums, consumer sites and on an episode of a television show. When people know someone who has had it done and they look attractive, it has a knock-on snowball effect, as the public try to look like some celebrity or model they think is gorgeous. Dimples through the decades are commonly inherited and are caused by a defect in the cheek muscle, a small adhesion where the skin is attached to the muscle and in some cultures they believe that a dimple signifies luck or fertility.

A 2008 study found that a serving of dark meat from turkey elevated levels of the MDA in subjects’ blood, but when they combined it with a glass of cabernet sauvignon or shiraz, the increase in MDA was “completely prevented.” So it seems that a glass of wine does in fact aid digestion.

Their study of 68 people with generalised anxiety disorder, a condition involving excessive worry that makes normal life difficult, showed anxiety symptoms were halved for those given 10 massage sessions over three months. But those given relaxation therapy, which is much cheaper, improved by the same amount.

two therapies. However, a spokesman for the General Council for Massage Therapies, said massage was not just about dealing with emotional issues and relaxation: "Massage therapists do corrective work with soft tissue such as muscles and tendons. They try to make these tissues work as well as possible." She pointed out that because it releases tension - in a shoulder for example - massage may also reduce pain and so make the person feel more relaxed: "This can give the person being treated a powerful psychological boost."

Today, the procedure which can cost up to £5000, depending on the number of dimples requested and where the patient wants them, is done under a local anaesthetic and takes about ten minutes, there is no outside incision as everything is done on the muscle on the inside of the cheek. Healing can take anywhere from a week to a month, although the dimple itself takes about three weeks to fall out. It appears at all times until it is fully healed and then it will only appear when a person smiles.

You should always see the doctor for serious ailments, but you can soothe minor complaints with these inexpensive products already in your pantry: Olive oil for eczema: Packed with inflammationreducing antioxidants, olive oil is the basis of many moisturisers; used alone, it's free of chemical irritants you may find in store-bought creams. Salt for athlete's foot: A saline solution provides a hostile environment for fungus, decreases excess perspiration, and softens skin so antifungal meds can penetrate deeper. Tonic water for restless legs: A 6-ounce glass of tonic water before bed might calm symptoms of restless legs syndrome; the quinine it contains helps stop muscle contractions.

Bunny hops into kids' hearts Easter - a time of chocolate eggs, yellow chicks and, of course, that long-time favourite, the Easter bunny. This year retailers are hoping for a repeat of the hit Christmas toy the Go Go Hamster, when the Zhu Zhu fluffy bunny hits the shelves on Saturday. He is similar to the hamster - he has a sensor on his nose to stop him banging into obstacles, and he looks set to be the latest in

must-have gifts. The hamster was a huge hit and had to be rationed in stores - he sold on eBay for many times his shop value. The bunny makes up to 40 sounds, from squeals and squeaks when he is in "adventure" mode to coos and

purrs in "nurturing" mode. And of course he does not need feeding, cleaning or an expensive hutch to live in. Tesco say that more people are opting to give children non-food gifts, and at just £9.97 with no food or vet bills, the bunny could be a bumper bargain.

The Fisherman s Friends is a ten strong group which has netted a whopping £1 million recording contract with Sony and will next month release a CD of traditional songs and sea shanties. So they will be vying for a place in the album charts with The Fron Male Voice Choir, The Coldstream Guards, and Lady Gaga - but not Jedward. The quiffed twosome from X-Factor were last week dropped by Sony. The fishermen come from Port Isaac and did not have to enter Britain s Got Talent to be spotted. A Sony producer fell across them while they were performing in a local pub,

and the rest is history. Now they have been offered a spot at the prestigious Glastonbury Festival. Meanwhile, Michael Jackson s estate has agreed a $250 million deal with Sony to use his music on video games, amusement park rides and TV adverts, plus a CD of previously unreleased material is in the pipeline.

In the meantime, Peter has started laser treatment to remove the tattoo "Katie" from his wedding ring finger. It s costing £240 and the work should be done by May. No doubt Cheryl Cole will have to pay rather more when and if she has the rather large "Mrs C" removed from the back of her neck, following the split with Ashley Cole, although divorce talk is now on the back burner.

Google stops censoring search results in China China has said Google's move to stop censoring search results is "totally wrong" and accused it of breaking a promise made when it launched in China. It is the latest step in a deepening row between the internet giant and Beijing over censorship and hacking. Speculation had been mounting that Google was preparing to announce a decision to pull out of China, which is the world’s largest internet market by users, or at least shut down its Chinese search engine.

But instead it has decided to redirect users of its China search engine Google.cn to the Hong Kong-based Google.com.hk. China has repeatedly warned Google that it will face consequences if it does not comply with censorship rules.

“We want as many people in the world as possible to have access to our services, including users in mainland China, yet the Chinese government has been crystal clear throughout our discussions that selfcensorship is a non-negotiable legal requirement.

Google’s chief legal officer David Drummond said:

“We believe this new approach of providing

uncensored search in simplified Chinese from Google.com.hk is a sensible solution to the challenges we’ve faced. It’s entirely legal and will meaningfully increase access to information for people in China. A senior US official said the State Department had been given a “heads up” about Google’s latest move.

YOUTUBE

Youtube accuse Viacom of 'secret uploads' YouTube has accused media conglomerate Viacom of secretly uploading content to the video-sharing site whilst publicly complaining about its presence. YouTube said it deliberately "roughed up" any uploaded videos to make them look stolen or leaked. The accusation was made as a court prepares to rule in a $1bn suit brought by Viacom against Youtube for "massive intentional copyright infringement". Viacom said it had identified 150,000 such infringements on the site.

"YouTube was intentionally built on infringement and there are countless internal YouTube communications demonstrating that YouTube's founders and its employees intended to profit from that infringement," Viacom said in a statement."By their own admission, the site contained 'truckloads' of infringing content."

But Zahavah Levine, YouTube's chief counsel, accused Viacom of covert operations to add copyright infringing content. "For years, Viacom continuously and secretly uploaded its content to YouTube, even while publicly complaining about its presence there," she wrote in a blog post.

"It hired no fewer than 18 different marketing agencies to upload its content to the site. It deliberately 'roughed up' the videos to make them look stolen or leaked. "It opened YouTube accounts using phony email addresses. It even sent employees to Kinko's to upload clips from computers that couldn't be traced to Viacom."

German govt warns against Firefox The German government has warned its citizenry against the use of the Firefox browser due to security issues. The warning from

the Federal Office for Information Security is an echo of a similar pronouncement it made against Internet Explorer in

January. The office warned that the Firefox vulnerability, confirmed by Firefox makers, could allow hackers to run malicious

programs on users' computers. A version of Firefox to be released at the end of the month will fix the bug.

Button tries out a V8 Supercar in Oz Jenson Button got a taste of V8 Supercar racing when he swapped his McLaren for a Holden Commodore of the Australian touring car series. In a Vodafone sponsored event, the 30-year-old did a few laps of the Albert Park circuit in fellow reigning champion Jamie Whincup’s car.

Nissan to build the Leaf, its electric car, in Sunderland Sunderland was tipped as European favourite to build the Leaf since the announcement that Nissan's electric car battery production plant would be sited next to the present factory Production will begin in Britain in early 2013, It will start being produced this year in Japan and in 2012 in America. Nissan estimate that the Sunderland plant will initially produce 50,000 cars

a year, and it means that 2,250 jobs at Nissan and its suppliers will be protected by the announcement. Lord Mandelson has said that Nissan's investment "is a fantastic vote of confidence in the Sunderland plant and

its excellent workforce". ''Today's news from Nissan, with support from Government, shows that by working together we can achieve our aim of making the UK a world-leader in ultra-low carbon vehicles.'' Andy Palmer, senior vice president at Nissan, added: ''The world is at the dawn of a new era in automotive transport. ''Thanks to the UK's firm commitment to a low carbon future in terms of infrastructure, customer incentives and educational programmes, the Nissan Leaf will be built at Sunderland, making the UK the third country in the

world to produce this revolutionary car.'' The new investment for a new dedicated electric vehicle platform will be £420m; £20.7m of the investment will come from the British Government as a grant, The European Investment Bank is also providing finance of £197.3m. The Sunderland plant opened in 1984 and has so far built 5.6 million cars. It produced a third of all cars built in Britain in 2009. The plant currently makes the Qashqai, Quashqai+2, Note and Micra cars. The One North East regional development agency is going

all the way with the scheme and will install 1,300 charging points in the northeast in the next three years. There will also be preferential lanes and parking spaces for electric vehicles in the region. The company has not specified how much the car will cost,

saying only that it will be competitive with similarsized cars with conventional engines. The Leaf is a five-seater hatchback that offers the same space, practicality and performance of a similar car in its class - minus the tailpipe emissions.

New UK motor show at Goodwood Festival of Speed An all-new 1 day motor show will open ahead of the Goodwood Festival of Speed The Sussex-based Festival of Speed is a huge motoring event and the organisers have added an extra day for new cars ahead of the racing extravaganza. Called a 'moving motor show', the Goodwood event will give visitors the chance to try out the cars on the famous hillclimb course on Thursday July 1st before the racing cars take over on July 2-4th for the Festival of Speed. Twenty car companies have signed up to the Goodwood moving motor show. The list includes Audi and Mercedes-Benz, who were conspicuous by their absence from the last

The organisers at Goodwood have looked at other shows, such as Geneva, Los Angeles and Paris to work out what they should offer. British Motor Show held in London in 2008. It's thought that Audi will show off its amazing new R8 Spyder for the first time in the UK. Lord March, who owns the Goodwood estate and is the force behind this new motor show, said: “It's a day where car manufacturers can show off their latest and

most exceptional products. We will be putting guests into these cars to experience the hill course for themselves. It's a dynamic experience and we are keen to be the British Motor Show: we believe the Festival of Speed can take that position.” Since

Goodwood has yet to announce how many tickets will be available for the moving motor show, but it's thought around 30,000 people will be there for the one-day event. The Earl of March has also announced the introduction of a dedicated ‘Aviation Show’ zone as an

Harry Carpenter has died aged 84 The sport of boxing is mourning the loss of popular television commentator Harry Carpenter, who died in hospital aged 84. He will be remembered for his distinctive commentating voice, and his banter with Frank Bruno. Frank was too upset to make a statement but will issue one soon. Mr Carpenter leaves a wife and son.

Furyk wins first PGA Baha inspires Malaga Tour title since 2007 to a great win

The victory moves Malaga up to sixth from bottom of La Liga 7 points clear of the relegation zone Report: Scott Forbes

The experienced American carded a 69 during a final round affected by thunderstorms to finish just ahead of Korean KJ Choi on 13 under par. He had been three ahead with just four to play but grew nervous as the finishing line approached, starting with a bogey at the 15th. Scrambled back-to-back pars followed before a much-relieved Furyk escaped with just a bogey at the last after a near-shank from the trees. Furyk did win at the Chevron World Challenge in California last year, but that did not count as his 14th title. His last success on the PGA Tour came in the 2007 Canadian Open. The 39-year-old, who had held a three-shot lead after the third round, was made

MĂĄlaga 2 - 0 Villareal

to wait on Sunday as a thunderstorm delayed play by almost four hours. Bubba Watson finished in third place on 11 under, with fellow American Nick Watney alone in fourth a further two shots adrift, South African Retief Goosen took fifth spot on eight under ahead of Stephen Ames of Canada and Englishman Luke Donald, who started the week as he finished it - with a round of

71. Padraig Harrington, who had led at the halfway stage, ended up in a fiveway tie for eighth having started his day with an opening birdie that moved him briefly into a tie for second, but a 71 meant Justin Rose had to settle for a share of 13th, meaning he is still outside the world's top 50 a week before the invitations are sent out for The Masters.

Malaga began well with good possession. At 16 minutes Caicedo had the first chance with Lopez saving for Villareal. With Malaga pressing, a Duda freekick at 20 minutes sailed over the bar. The best chance of the first half fell to Malaga but with no one connecting to a cross in the 45th minute another chance went begging . Baha leaps above the defenders to score

After half time MuĂąiz made two inspired substitutions. Valdo came on for Fernando and Baha came on for Ben Achour. Baha met a Duda corner at the near post to score in the 64th minute. That was only Baha's third league goal of the season but it was just the boost Malaga would

have been hoping for after successive defeats to Barcelona, Xerez and Almeria had left them just four points above the bottom three. Baha netted his second goal at 83 minutes putting the finishing touch to a

great move. Malaga were running riot at the end with Obinna and Valdo both going close. A great 3 points, they now need the same on Wednesday against Valencia.

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again A couple of friends and I decided to try a course a little further afield than we normally play. As we had to drop our wives at the airport we carried on along the A-7 east of Malaga to Añoreta Golf Club which took us only 25 minutes to drive to from the airport. The course sits on either side of the main road in two valleys and is in a very attractive setting with imaginative use of the surrounding areas. However it appears that the greenkeepers, in common with all their counterparts here in southern Spain, have had some serious problems with the amount of rainfall and sadly the course was not in the greatest condition. But on the positive side there were a lot of green staff working on the course trying to improve things. Overall I think that Añoreta is well worth another visit, although possibly towards the end of the summer. The European tour is, at last, getting closer to us with the latest event just across the water in Morocco. As the tournament reached its climax on Sunday, the very talented South African Loius Oosthuizen led, followed by the comparative rookie Rhys Davies from Wales. After a tentative start by both players, the young Welshman exerted tremendous pressure and eventually wore down Oosthuizen to win by two shots. The Tour comes to Malaga starting on Thursday March 25th at the Parador Golf Club and, I understand, has a very generous offer of free entry for the first two days. Plenty of reason then to go along and see the best that European golf has to offer. Till the next time keep your head down. Dave

Woods incurs Tour sponsor’s wrath A leading golf sponsor has criticised the timing of Sunday night’s TV interviews with Tiger Woods. Tiger news has now disrupted three tournaments in five weeks and has done nothing to get rid of the “selfish” tag attached to him by Ernie Els.

Thierry Henry: I don't want to Clancy: GB for pursuit play against Arsenal Thierry Henry admitted he shuddered when Arsenal were drawn against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals. And the former hero of Highbury claimed he did not really want to play against the club where he made his name and would not celebrate if he scored. Henry, Arsenal's all-time record scorer with 226 goals in 380 games before he left for Barcelona in the summer of 2007, said: "Whenever there is a draw for the Champions League I am in pain. "I'm not saying I won't try to fight or whatever because that's the way the game is. But I don't want to play against Arsenal. "It will be weird for me to step on the pitch, even if it's at the Emirates and not Highbury, with another shirt on." When asked if he would celebrate a goal against his former team, he added: "Forget about it. No. I do not want to play
