ETA calls for mediation
The Basque terrorist group ETA appealed on Sunday for international mediation to resolve its And yet more conflict with the French and Spanish governments, accusing them of being stubborn. weeds...! A week earlier it had offered to desist from violent actions in return for talks but Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba dismissed the offer as "inadequate".

What a change in the weather! last week it absolutely tipped down here in coin and people were running for cover. At least it gets better at night so we can all get some sleep. The weeds in the garden have shot up what seems like overnight. We used to spray them first to kill them, then rotovate them in but we're not allowed to do that anymore without first having done a course, in Spanish, to make sure you know what you're doing. I fully understand that people have to be kept safe and there has been an awful lot of spraying willy nilly – not least from my Spanish neighbour who mixes his own concoction with who knows what. However, due to the work I did in the uK I had certificates for handling far more dangerous chemicals but they don't recognise them here – typical. On Saturday evening we went to a great 50th birthday party at a friend of our’s house so, congratulations to Elaine on her 50th and well done Sue for organising a fabulous party for your sister. It must have been a lot of hard work and she had a great time.....wanna be my sis too?! Then disaster struck on Sunday. I had a favourite pair of bright pink reading specs which I tend to keep hooked over the front of whatever I'm wearing when I don't need them on my face. Anyway, I bent down to open my gates, got the car out and then realised I hadn't got them anymore. Yep, I'd run them over. Back to Specsavers then! luckily I have spares.
He said ETA had broken too many ceasefires to be
trusted and that nothing short of "a definitive and unconditional abandonment" would be acceptable. In response to ETA's call, government sources said it “was not the time for communiqués that come
to nothing”. The president of the Partido Popuar in the Basque Country, Antonio Basagoiti said: “We want nothing less than ETA's defeat by legal means or an unconditional laying down of arms by the group.”
Scotland looks to Basque partnership After a meeting with Basque Country Premier Patxi Lopez last week in Bilabo, Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond said the two regions had much to offer each other and are to work more closely together to share their expertise in areas such as renewable energy. He said a formal
partnership agreement between the two administrations is expected to be signed in the near future. The Scottish government said the first minister invited Mr Lopez to visit Scotland and the invitation was accepted. Mr Lopez
Socialist 'fashionistas' Moslem annoyed women Deputy Prime Minister María Teresa Fernández de la Vega and the Socialist Party's organisation secretary Leire Pajín said on Monday that they were offended by an article published in the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine which described Spain's women ministers as “Socialist fashionistas”. She added: “The writer not only belongs to a Conservative party but also to a past epoch that thankfully we have left behind.” Meanwhile, Sra Pajin told reporters said the article represented a “machismo which unfortunately we have to continue fighting”.

Guardia Civil protest goes ahead Thousands of Guardia Civil marched through the streets of the capital on Saturday after Madrid's High Court of Justice overturned the government's attempt to ban the march. Members of the National Police and the Army were there to support them. One of their main demands is for the same pay and working hours as the National Police. The country's 84,438 Guardia Civil agents work 13 hours more per month
than the National Police and earn €200 less. The Guardia who rise up through the ranks also want to be on an equal footing with those who come as officers from the Zaragoza Military Academy. Another main worry is a shortage of
equipment -there is currently only one bulletproof jacket per 15 agents, according to a spokesman for the Unified Association of Guardia Civil, who said that as a result “our colleagues die unnecessarily”.

EU money supports Spain's 'blood fiestas'
N
The Toro de la Vega event, considered one of the worst fiestas by Spain's own animal protection groups, involves hundreds of men chasing the bull through the streets, ,beating it with sticks and pelting it with stones. When the bull reaches the meadows (La Vega) outside town, men on horseback skewer it with eight-foot long spears, until the bull is finally put out of its misery. It’s one of hundreds of blood fiestas which are far more
common than the regular bull fights, and kill thousands more animals than bullfighting, said Penman. The event is now on YouTube and has drawn critical comments from as far afield as Australia. The town s mayor defended the fiesta but 300 members of the El Refugio animal defence group witnessed it and have asked the government to legislate to end “such cruel spectacles”. The Mail article said that the European Union spends £37 million a year directly subsidising blood fiestas like the Toro de la Vega and other blood sports. Some MEPs are campaigning to have
bullfighting and blood fiestas officially recognised as part of Europe’s cultural heritage, but Jaqueline Foster, Conservative MEP and vice-president of the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals said EU money should not be used to subsidise bullfights and blood fiestas across Spain. Penman’s article cites Finca Valdeolivas, where the bull killed in Tordesillas was bred. The owner refused to talk to him, but Penman examined EU’s accounts and discovered that it received at least £139,000 in subsidies last year. He said it was impossible to say what proportion directly supported the rearing of bulls but the

30 kph limit for all city centre
Spain's so-called “blood fiestas” came under the world-wide media spotlight this week as Spanish animal defence protesters called on Prime Minister Jose Luiz Zapatero to ban cruel practices. Daily Mail reporter Danny Penman wrote a horrified eye-witness account of the Toro de la Vega ‘blood fiesta’ in Tordesillas last week and looked at the link to EU money.

farm seemed to specialise in breeding them. Spain receives £4.3 billion in agricultural support every year from the EU, and animal welfare campaigners fear that a significant proportion of this is siphoned off to provide more animals for fiestas across the country. But there is a groundswell of changing Spanish opinion. One recent poll found that 60% of people opposed bullfighting. And protesters demonstrated outside the La Venta bullring in Madrid on Sunday on the “La tortura no es cultura “ (Torture is not culture) platform and criticised the €2.72m of public money given annually to help keep bullfighting alive.
The City Council announced last week that a 30 kph speed limit would be extended to include all the historical city centre today (Wednesday) – the day the city holds a car-free day. Madrid has two areas with 30 kph speed limits while Barcelona more than 200 kilometres of so-called 30-streets. Bilbao and Vitoria have imposed the limit in the areas with most pedestrian traffic while in Malaga has the lowest the speed limit - 20 kph in the city centre. HellIn, CASTIllA-lA MAnCHA
Six die during bull runs The death of a 56-year-old man in the bull run during the town’s annual feria brought the total of people killed by bulls this summer to six – five of them in September. A 19-year-old man was gored fatally in Fuentesauco, Zamora province on July 3rd; while four men and one woman have died after being gored so far this month. The 44-year-old woman was gored through the barrier at the bull run in Arganda del Rey, Madrid. MADRID
Spaniards becoming less tolerant This year’s SOS Racism in Spain annual report shows that 44% of Spaniards believe that the presence of so many immigrants is harmful for the country. Just over a quarter believe gypsies should be expelled while a similar number would send all Moroccans home. Despite the fact that unemployment among immigrants is twice the national average, many Spaniards continue to feel they are taking jobs away from the local people. The report indicates tolerance of illegal immigrants is almost zero.

The work that sparked the protests.
Live cricket work closes art show An art gallery in Caceres was forced to close down a show just a day after it opened because of an installation by artist Ismael Alabado featuring 400 crickets stuck to a canvas. On opening day a woman sprayed them with insecticide “to put them out of their misery” before reporting the gallery to the Guardia Civil animal protection unit Seprona. Seprona agents visited the gallery and seized a box full of live crickets which were presumably to be used to replace any crickets that died. Later that day, Extremadura
regional premier Guillermo Fernandez Vara told reporters the work would be withdrawn from the exhibition.
that the public's reaction was “hypocritical” given that bulls are still “bleeding and dying in rings all over Extremadura”.
The organisers decided to close it down altogether rather than risk a fine of €15,000 as set out in the region's animal protection law.
They said the artist had bought the crickets from a pet shop which was selling them as feed for other species. They also blamed the press for covering the exhibition in a “scandalous” way.
However, they pointed out

‘Tea Party’ star in witchcraft row Controversial Republican candidate for the US Senate, Christine O’Donnell is trying to play down revelations that she dabbled with witchcraft in high school. She asked “How many of you didn't hang out with questionable folks?” a day after a clip of her discussing the occult was rebroadcast. Ms O'Donnell admitted dabbling in witchcraft during a 1999 taping of comedian Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect" show. She also said: "One of my first dates with a witch was
on a satanic altar, and I didn't know it. I mean, there's little blood there and stuff like that." In clips previously released by Mr Maher in the wake of Ms O'Donnell's victory last week, Ms O'Donnell's views on sexuality have already been scrutinised. Mr Maher says he has more embarrassing
clips and will continue to air them until the candidate appears on his show. Ms O'Donnell is backed by the right-wing, grassroots Tea Party and is known for her conservative Christian views. Last week she beat a veteran politician for the Senate nomination in Delaware. However, her eccentricities are causing anxiety within the ranks of the Republican

Countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are leading a global decline in new HIV infections, the UN said last week. According to UNAids, 22 countries in the world's worst affected region had seen a drop in new cases of more than 25%. However, UNAids noted that cases of HIV are on the increase in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and among gay men in developed countries. UNAids also said there are now 5.2 million people worldwide receiving treatment for HIV/Aids,
which has helped to ensure that 200,000 fewer people died from the virus in 2008 than in 2004. Michel Sidibe, UNAids executive director, said the world was making "real progress" towards achieving the sixth
Millennium Development Goal (MDG6) of halting and reversing the spread of HIV/Aids by 2015. He said the fall was because of greater awareness and better use of preventative measures. The UN has called for greater investment in HIV/Aids

prevention, warning that there was a $10 billion shortfall in 2009. It said those countries most severely affected by HIV/Aids could not handle the crisis with their own resources alone.
Former Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt has written about her six-year ordeal of being held hostage by FARC rebels in her book Meme le silence a une fin (Even Silence Has An End), due to be released later this week. Ms Betancourt recounts how she was repeatedly beaten, humiliated and threatened with death while being kept prisoner in Colombia's jungle. She reveals that it was at times very difficult to keep hopes alive. "We were handed the heaviest sentence a human being can be given, that of not knowing when it would
end." Ms Betancourt was seized by Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) gunmen in southern Colombia as she campaigned for the presidency in February 2002. She was released in July 2008, when the rebels were tricked into handing her and 14 other hostages over to soldiers who were masquerading as members of a humanitarian group volunteering to fly them by helicopter to a new location. The book is due to be released later this week in Colombia, France and the United States.
Newspaper seeks drug gang guidance El Diario de Juarez, which is published in the heartland of the Mexico’s drug war has asked cartels for guidance on whether it should publish stories on the conflict. The paper has become known for its strong reporting from the deadly streets of Ciudad Juarez but the killing of a 21-yearold photographer last week prompted the newspaper to run a frontpage editorial asking: "What do you want from us?" Journalists are regularly being targeted by
drug gangs and the USbased Committee to Protect Journalists has said than 30 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2006. Editor Herardo Rodriguez said the newspaper had not decided to stop publishing stories on the drug war,
but would consider doing so if the answer that came from the cartels indicated that was their wish. Describing El Diario as a "very aggressive" organisation that "searches for the truth", he conceded that the paper might have to scale back its work if the violence did not stop: "We may
consider stopping in exchange for the lives of our reporters." A spokesman for the Committee to Protect Journalists, said El Diario's decision was a cause for regret. He said El Diario was doing a lot of good reporting on crime,
describing the paper's move as "an indication that the situation is out of control". More than 28,000 people have died in drugrelated violence since President Felipe Calderon deployed the army against the cartels in 2006.

Far-right Sweden Democrats, flanked by protesters, at an election meeting in Malmö.
Far-right election gains protested Thousands of people staged a protest in Stockholm on Monday, against the election to parliament of 20 members of the Sweden Democrats far-right party, which opposes immigration and has been accused of racism and intolerance. Its 5.7% of the vote came at the expense of the centreright Alliance of Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt who has said he will seek the support of the Green Party for his new government, which is currently allied with the centre-left Social Democrats. Mr Reinfeldt's Alliance won 49.3% of the vote in Sunday's election, the first
non-left-wing government to be re-elected in nearly a century. According to local police, a crowd of 6,000 protesters took part in the demonstration in the capital, shouting "No to racism!", while there was also another, smaller demonstration held in Gothenburg. Demonstrators reporters it was
told very
important to show that the “big majority of the Swedish population is against the right-wing extremists like the Sweden Democrats". The Sweden Democrats appear to have benefited from dissatisfaction over immigration, and the election result undermines the image of Sweden as a tolerant and open-minded country.

Writing on his website on Monday Jamie Oliver said spending cuts could hit the Ministry of Food which he set up as part of his Channel 4 series to teach good cooking on a tight budget. It was backed by central government funding, which Oliver said he had heard could be under threat. Rotherham council has said it wants the Ministry to continue and is looking at other ways of raising revenue. The Ministry of Food is mainly funded by grants of £130,000 a year from the Department of Health and the Department of Communities and Local Government, but the current grants run out next

A Rotherham council spokesman said the project had been a phenomenal success, adding: “It's abundantly clear that this is one of the few strategies that is actually working and helps people overcome their problems with food." Similar schemes already exist in New Zealand, Australia and parts of the US. While road deaths have now fallen to an all-time low, 2,222 people still died on the roads last year.
study was compiled after analysing road accident data from 2000 to 2007. One of its findings is that one in five new drivers crashes within the first six months of being on the road.
Experts at the World Safety Conference, currently being held in London, argue this figure could be lowered still further with more restrictions and greater awareness of risks. The Cardiff University
A spokesman for the AA said that while there would be benefits to graduated driver licensing, it would be difficult for police to enforce. He said it would give the wrong signals to introduce
new laws aimed at young people and then not enforce them:”Many would feel that all motoring laws could be broken." A spokeswoman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents also doubted the scheme could be properly enforced. She said improving education and awareness with further training for new drivers might be more beneficial.

Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of a World War II heroine whose work as a British spy only became known after her death. Eileen Nearne, 89, died in her home in Torquay, Devon, on September 2, after suffering a heart attack. As Miss Nearne did not appear to have any known relatives when she died, the local council entered her flat a few days later so that funeral arrangements could be made.

British couple found dead in Tenerife The bodies of a British couple were found in their apartment in the resort of Playa de las Americas on Tenerife when police were called in by neighbours who reported bad smells coming from the premises. Police said there were no signs of a breakin and no arrests have been made. Initial examinations on Monday suggested that the as yet unnamed man, 57, and woman, 69, could have been dead for at least five days. They were found in the sitting room and in the bedroom respectively. A police spokesman said he believed the couple lived in the resort and were not just there on holiday, adding that "no lines of inquiry are being ruled out for the moment". The Foreign Office said it had been informed of the deaths and was providing consular assistance to next of kin.

Coca growers black out city Coca farmers briefly seized control of a power plant on Monday, taking workers hostage and affecting power supplies to the regional capital, Pucallpa. The angry farmers were protesting against plans for coca eradication in the central region of Ucayali. Police eventually moved in, arresting 120 people and freeing 30 workers who then restored power to the city. Peru now rivals Colombia in levels of coca production, according to the UN, prompting the government to increase crop eradication plans. GAZA
Israel allows car shipment Israel has allowed about 20 cars into Gaza, in the first such shipment since the militant Hamas movement took over the Strip in 2007. No cars have been legally imported since then but vehicles have been smuggled through tunnels from Egypt. There had been "several problems" in coordinating the shipment, an Israeli spokesman said, including near-daily rocket and mortar attacks. In recent months, Israel has eased the blockade of Gaza, although most people are not allowed to leave the territory.

Gibraltar apology for police incident Family steps up
Chief Minister Peter Caruana apologised to the Spanish government after it was reported in the Spanish press that two Royal Gibraltar Police had entered a house in San Roque and seized evidence in connection with a robbery at a jewellery shop in Gibraltar.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry immediately lodged a "strong protest" with the British Embassy in Madrid and with the Gibraltar government, demanding an explanation. In a press release in Spanish, the Gibraltar government conceded that the two officers had acted incorrectly but believed that because they entered the house accompanied by the
owner they were not exercising police powers in Spanish territory. The jewellery shop was broken into on August 4, and two men – a Gibraltarian and a Briton – were arrested but managed to escape and flee across the border to San Roque where the Gibraltarian and his girlfriend lived. The girlfriend refused to allow the RGP officers to enter the house on a first visit and reported the matter to the Guardia Civil. However, they returned with the owner of the house and seized £2,000, another sum of money in euros, three motorcycle helmets, a bunch of keys and a rental contract for the house.
search for hiker On September 24, it will be exactly two months since hiker and speleologist Juan Antonio Gomez Alarcon disappeared on a hike over the the Mijas Sierra between Churriana and Ojen. The family has never given up hope of finding him and has posted photos of him all along the Costa del Sol, as well as profiles on Tuenti and Facebook. Although the Guardia Civil gave up their search after about two weeks, the family have been asking for volunteers to continue the search every weekend. This weekend, they will make a special effort and will start
the search on Friday. The search will continue on Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 9 pm both days. The meeting point for volunteers will be at the Osunillas sports ground on the A-368 one kilometre from Mijas Pueblo. The 32-year-old hiker was last seen at Fuengirola bus station. He was wearing grey trousers and shirt and carrying a small backpack. As far as his family know, he was not carrying his mobile phone, his ID card or money.

Huge fine for splashing pedestrians The town council at Carboneras has introduced new regulations which will force motorists to slow down when driving through puddles to avoid splashing passers-by or face a fine of at least €600. People who hang washing on their balconies will also face a similar fine. Critics say the council should examine its own behaviour – this council issued the permit for the construction of the huge Algarrobico hotel on one of the few unspoilt beaches in the Cabo de Gato-Nijar natural park, protected by the national environment law.

Town honours victims of both Civil War sides Archaeologists have found the remains of the five people they were searching for in a mass grave in Alfarnatejo, a village of 538 inhabitants 60 kilometres north of Malaga city. Two of the men were local farmers who were assassinated by Republican militiamen at the start of the Civil War and the other three – two local policemen and a young man – were executed by Franco's forces after they took the village early in 1937. The town's Socialist mayor, Antonio Benitez, has asked towns in the rest of the country where mass graves are being opened to do the same. He said: “We must contribute to putting an end to all this so that the families can close their wounds”. The great nephew of one of the policemen agreed. Chiringuitos to open all year round Mijas Council has decided to break with the seasonal opening of the town's chiringuitos in an effort to attract visitors to eat at them in winter as well as during the summer. The councillor in charge of tourism, Salvador Gallardo, said the decision had been reached together with the Association of Mijas Beach Businessmen. The idea had originally been put forward by the Mijas Tourism promotion Group which consists of representatives of both the public and private sectors. Sr Gallardo told reporters: “Visitors and local people can enjoy Mijas' beaches all year round, thanks to the good weather we enjoy practically the whole year round.” He said the chiringuito owners would draw up a work plan so that not all of them would be open at the same time, because “they'll be catering to a lower number of visitors”.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
Black, white and shades of grey What strike?
S
W
ince the Law of Historical Memory came into force in December 2007, not a week goes by without a mass grave being dug up or another statue of Franco being removed from a pedestal in some town or other. Street names are being officially changed all over Spain, although the local people continue to use the old names glorifying El Caudillo or one of his generals or ministers. The latest “outrage” to get the politically correct up in arms is that a plaque honouring Franco still adorns a façade at Seville University, No doubt it will be torn down soon, leaving a gaping hole that will never be repaired, more likely than not.
B
ut all things pass, like the whitewash that hides the housing ministry plaques bearing the Falangist symbol over the doorways of many houses here in Coín which were built in the 1950s. Those houses were very solidly built and will be around long after the modern blocks flung up on the edge of town start falling apart. And the council still hasn't made a move to change the name of a street called after the Blue Division which Franco sent to fight for Hitler on the Russian front, or the one called Quiepo de Llano, the bloodthirsty general who frightened Andalucians to death with his threats on radio during the Civil War. But perhaps he's tolerated because he despised Franco, who got rid of him on a flimsy pretext not long after the war ended.
I
suppose the next step will be to rewrite history. The Ronda town council has already made a half-hearted effort to do this “by omission” on a website giving the history of the town. There are pages and pages describing the coming of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Moors but only a couple of paragraphs are devoted to the civil war years. Perhaps that's an attempt to skirt round the memory of the 514 people who were thrown into the gorge by Republican militiamen in the first two months of the war. I read somewhere recently that in fact it wasn't the local people who committed that atrocity by militiamen sent out from Malaga to clear the province of Franco sympathisers.
I
n fact there's plenty of evidence that Malaga was in the vanguard when it came to atrocities committed by the Republicans which is quite understandable – but not justifiable when you remember the huge gap between the few rich and the masses of poor people in Andalucia in those days.
B
ut all things will pass – and if the Partido Popular wins the next general election, no doubt the Historical Memory Law will be left to quietly moulder. The Left likes to give the impression that the Partido Popular Franco's rightful heir, as they call it – has always refused to do anything for Franco's victims. In fact, it voted for
compensating them with pensions before it came to power in 1996 and approved the opening of the mass graves in 2000 – without making too much of a fuss about it.
A
nd there's the crux of the matter. For the Left, it's all black and white, whereas the Partido Popular realises there are too many shades of grey. I don't quite know how to go about it, but I intend to try to trace the political affiliations of the parents and grandparents of today's Socialists. We know Zapatero's grandfather was shot for his Republican sympathies by his fellow military who sympathised with Franco. But no-one else in the government says anything about what happened to their parents and grandparents during the Civil War which makes me suspect they have something to keep quiet about.
C
ivil wars are very messy – they divide families, towns and regions into “goodies” and “baddies”, with the “goodies” being the “baddies” and vice versa, depending on which way an individual looks at it.
F
ranco was definitely a baddie by anybody's yardstick but he certainly wasn't the baddest of them all, as today's Left tries to make out. He always claimed that one million people died to save Spain from Communism but unbiased historians agree with Hugh Thomas who says in his book, The Spanish Civil War, that the loss of lives from all causes, including the deaths from malnutrition on the Republican side was about 500,00 of whom some 200,000 or 10% of the total combatants were killed in action or died of wounds – 90,000 on Franco's side and 110,000 Republicans. Murders or executions behind the lines accounted for another 130,000, some 10,000 died during bombardments and another 100,000 were executed or died in jail after the end of the war – some 800,000 in all. How paltry - Hitler, Stalin and Mao must be laughing in their graves. More on that next week.
hat if they held a strike and nobody came? That’s what the leaders of the nation’s two biggest trade unions fear will happen during next Wednesday’s general strike which has been losing impetus from the first day it was called. The CCOO and UGT want to ensure nobody goes to work that day so they have devised a plan to seek the closure of nearly all rail services and to prevent all international flights from leaving Spanish airports. Their proposals form part of a list presented to the Public Works Ministry on Monday of the minimum services the unions pledge to provide during the strike as part of their good faith gestures with the government. Rubbish. It is a scheme to ensure that more than half of Spanish workers won’t be able to show up at their jobs. But the serious aspect of this blueprint is their petition to ground most passenger jets which only serves to compromise national security. The CCOO and UGT want to create chaos and seek international headlines. The ministry was to answer their demands at press time yesterday but officials were proposing 20-percent to 25-percent service for rail and air transport that day.
T
he union’s have called this strike to protest the government’s austerity measures, especially the 5% public servants’ wage cuts that took effect in July. The CCOO and the UGT – once in a cosy relationship with the Socialists – are demanding that Prime Minister Zapatero cancel his labour reform package, and take back his plans to freeze pensions next year and raise the retirement age. They can strike all they want, says the prime minister, but the austerity programme stays. His tough stance has put him in direct confrontation with labour – a sector that delivers so much of the Socialist votes – and will no doubt result with biting consequences for the ruling party in the upcoming regional elections in Catalonia and next year in Madrid and Valencia .
Y
et it was the unions who had been telling Zapatero not to budge when this nation found itself quickly sinking in financial quicksand without offering the government something to grab on – not even an alternative solution or suggestion so that the Socialists could keep the pinch from becoming the punch that many Spaniards have suffered. Fernando Toxo of CCOO and the UGT’s Cándido Méndez said earlier this month that the prime minister should take no notice of the strikes and protests occurring in neighbouring France. By criticising every step the government takes but without throwing out any concrete ideas of their own, the CCOO and UGT have pretty much took the same policy strategies of the opposition Popular Party. Recently, Mariano Rajoy, the PP leader, admitted: “I know about economics. I’m not an economist but I know about economics
and I have aides whom I consult.” That’s pretty scary coming from a man who wants to be prime minister at all costs even though he lost the last two elections to Zapatero.
N
ow the unions want to strike. When the national work stoppage was first announced in May, more than 20% of Spaniards polled thought it would be a good idea and said they would be taking part. Earlier this month, that same poll showed less than 10 percent said they will participate. I don’t think that this loss in support has anything to do with demonstrating things are improving – far from it. At 20%, unemployment is through the roof but public spending has stopped and the government had to throw out its own rope – in the form of an austerity package – to keep this country from being swallowed by that rising quicksand. On September 29th, I plan to be at my work station like many of my other colleagues, not because we are content with this country’s current financial status but because we have no faith in Toxo and Méndez.
Tough primary
D
espite what the polls in Madrid say, the upcoming Socialist primary is going to be a tough one to call. The leader of the Madrid Socialist Party (PSM), Tomás Gómez, and Health Minister Trinidad Jiménez have both presented the 6,000 signatures they each need from their supporters to make their candidacies officials. The October 3rd primary will decide who will run next year against incumbent regional premier Esperanza Aguirre of the Popular Party. Early polls had shown that Jiménez had more support among Socialists for the nomination but lately Gómez has been closing the gap. The PSM leader had been given a raw deal by the Socialist leadership, especially by Zapatero, who insisted that Jiménez was the preferred choice among the party’s hierarchy.
S
ince 2007, Gómez has been saying that he wants to be the Socialist contender in Madrid and nobody questioned his ambitions until this summer when he was asked to step aside and let Trini run. He refused and, rightly so, forced the party to put the question to the voters in Madrid as should be the case in any democratic party.

Keith Baker You asked in your latest editorial for readers' feedback... just one question; who decided it was a good idea to print the answers to the crossword puzzles directly underneath the puzzles? This spoils the fun if you must have the answers in the same edition, could you not at least put them on another page?
By email A tip for your readers: those who have wasp traps will have noticed the high price of replacement 'wasp attractant'. I have found a simple sugar solution works just as well, if not better than the commercial product and is practically free. Just dissolve 3-4 tablespoons of sugar in boiling water then dilute with cold and fill your trap. Another bonus is that it
doesn't smell awful like the commercial alternative. Editor says: I will talk to our production department about maybe moving the crossword answers to another page but we also get letters saying thanks for putting them there for when they get stuck! Thanks for the wasp tip - there seems to be loads about right now.

Roland Dvarakowski via Ricky Leach How great to know that others collect movie cliches too. Some of my favourites are: if anybody coughs it means they have TB and will die very soon; if a fortuneteller predicts something then it ALWAYS comes true; killing any number of enemies or baddies is o.k. but any mercy killing will
mean certain death later for the perpetrator (even if they are Gary Cooper); witchdoctors will ALWAYS cure the good guy with their potions; if you are not told the details of a plan to rob, rescue or escape it's ALWAYS a success, if you are told then things invariably go wrong; even humblest Americans stay at 5-star hotels provided it's in Paris;
car drivers can take their eyes off the road for up to a minute to chat; foreigners, especially Germans and Mexicans, talk English among themselves though with funny accents; it's o.k. to steal money from thieves and to keep it for yourself, if not all of it then at least some of it...the list goes on and on.

Put the ‘Wow Factor’ back in your floor The first thing people notice when entering a room is the floor. If your marble floor is greying from wear and ageing, it will create a dull room. Bringing back the beautiful look of your marble’s natural brilliance will always bring a home back to life. Tony’s Marble Restoration Service specializes in marble and terrazzo renovation, bringing out your marble floor’s rich natural grain. Regain the brilliant shine your floors once had and make them dazzle once again. You will be amazed at the transformation from your current dull, dingy marble floors to a beautifully restored, better than new appearance. If your floors were not professionally diamond polished after installation, then you’ve probably never seen them at their best. As time goes by, many fine marble floors become worn, stained and damaged. Tony’s Marble Restoration
uses modern equipment that can undo years of wear and damage. Most stains are removed, even the ones you thought were permanent. It is not generally realized that marble is quite fragile and porous. Left untreated, it can wear quite badly very quickly. Therefore, an equally important reason for having the marble renovated is to seal and protect it, and leave the surface on the marble that is not only a high gloss, nonslip, low maintenance surface, but is considerably harder than the marble itself.

Wow! What a week This week there is an incredible number of events coincidentally happening at the same time. I’m sure that the astrology community will have something to say about it - perhaps we’re all doomed or something! Tomorrow, Thursday 23rd, is the autumn equinox; that is the day half way between the longest day in summer and the shortest day in winter. No matter where you stand on the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole you will get 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. From now on the days will become longer than the nights, as winter draws in. The reason that we have seasons is because the Earth is not standing straight up but instead is tilted over by about 23 ½ °. When the Northern half of the Earth is pointed towards the sun we get summer, but when it is pointed away from the sun then we get winter - tomorrow is exactly half way between these two dates. We get the same thing happening in March, which is the spring or Vernal equinox. As a side note, Easter is calculated from the spring equinox and falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon that occurs after the spring equinox. That is why Easter moves around so much! Talking about the Moon, from ancient times each full moon throughout the year has been given a special name: the Hunter’s Moon, the Wolf Moon and the Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox and is usually the largest moon. It isn’t actually any bigger than the other full moons, it is just an optical illusion that makes it appear bigger than all the others. Well this year the Harvest Moon occurs on the same day as the equinox and so should appear
absolutely huge tomorrow, try it out for yourself. Now as if that isn’t enough then the very bright star that you can see in the sky at the moment is the planet Jupiter, and this week Jupiter will be at its closest to the Earth in over 200 years. If you have binoculars or a telescope try having a look at Jupiter and you should be able to see the stripes crossing its face, these are the tops of the clouds that essentially make Jupiter. Look out also and you will see up to four tiny ‘stars’ either side of Jupiter, these are its four largest moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. To complete the line up, the planet Uranus also comes its closest to the earth and should be visible just slightly above Jupiter. If you focus your binoculars onto Jupiter then Uranus should be visible in the same field of view, appearing as a bluish green disc. If you would like to see all these amazing events then join us tomorrow (Thursday 23rd) at the Fuengirola astronomy society which is at the El Coto bar and restaurant along the Avenida de Mijas coming out of Fuengirola. I will be giving an illustrated talk about the seasons, the Moon and Jupiter at 8pm, then, weather permitting, we will be going outside and using the many telescopes that are there so we will be able to look at the Moon, Jupiter and Uranus.

A diamond of a night for Cystic Fibrosis funds
Pete (Neil Diamond) Nabarro as usual wowed the audience with his singing at the T.O.P.S. recent fundraising evening in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. The event, held at Restaurant Carolina in Alhaurin el Grande, was a sell-out with over 90 people attending for a super meal and an excellent cabaret. During the interval twentythree year old Becky Spencer (who suffers from
the disease herself) took to the stage and belted out a couple of popular songs, to the delight of everyone there. Pete very generously offered his singing talent (and his sense of humour) free of charge and treated the audience to a night of popular and lively entertainment. The generosity of the guests resulted in almost 500 euros being raised for this worthwhile charity.

Assistance dogs for the disabled - how to behave around them The information listed below are suggestions that Assistance Dogs For Living recommends when meeting or interacting with an assistance dog team in public. This same etiquette applies to assistance puppies in training. DO’S and DON’TS DON’T…distract the dog from their working position by calling, clapping, or offering food. DO…allow the assistance dog to serve as a working partner without distraction. DON’T…attempt to pet or touch an assistance dog… this also applies to your children and dogs; DO…speak to the person… not to the dog when greeting an assistance dog team. DON’T…be insulted if your request to pet the assistance
CHAIN President Kelly Thirlwell is on her way to the UK to take part in the hike and has been putting in some training here in Spain.
dog is not granted; DO…understand that releasing the dog to greet you might distract the dog’s attentiveness to his/her partner. DON’T…automatically tell the person that there are no dogs allowed. DO…ask if the dog with them is an assistance dog. If they say yes…no further access questions are necessary. DON’T…assume that the dog is not an assistance dog because the person doesn’t look disabled; DO… observe the conduct and interaction between the person and the dog. If the dog is being attentive to his or her partner and functioning close to them, you are looking at the main characteristics of an assistance dog.

Saving the gentle giants The Andalucian Giant Donkey is in danger of extinction Written by Jean Joss
A
few kilometres inland from the coastal strip at Estepona you can visit Finca Los Pajaritos where a remarkably dedicated couple, Marlene and Steven Byrd, have established a breeding sanctuary for these rather special animals, supported totally by private funding, public donations and volunteers.
O
nce as synonymous with Spain as castanets, flamenco dresses and black bulls, the humble donkey has been overtaken by mechanisation and modern developments and is becoming an increasingly rare sight. This is particularly true of the native Andalucian donkeys, often referred to as giants because of their greater size and strength. For centuries they were used to carry water, olives, fruit, cork, building materials,
attraction. They also have a wonderfully gentle nature, are very sociable and extremely intelligent, more so, many would maintain, than horses. They are also, apparently, quieter and more reliable to ride. If you think all donkeys are stubborn come and learn more about these!
and, of course, people from place to place. They worked in the fields all year round and at ferias were ridden decked out in colourful harness. Now, because numbers have dwindled so much, the breed has been officially recognised as “endangered”.
T
he Andalucian donkey is much bigger than the traditional “burro”, often reaching 1.50m at the wither – the size of a small horse. Add to this their enormous ears, their larger bone structure and elegant heads and you have a very impressive creature. But their appearance is by no means their only
T
he finca is not a rescue centre. Marlene (above right) is President of ANCRAA (Asociacion National de Criadores de la Raza Asnal Andaluza – the national association of breeders), concerned with saving the breed as a whole, not just one or two examples. They keep three males and many more
females so the foals are carefully bred to keep track of the bloodlines and preserve the characteristics of the breed. The “boys” are very large and imposing but behave beautifully (Marlene is a follower of Pat Parelli methods of natural horsemanship, equally effective on donkeys). The females just can't get enough attention and the foals, naturally, are adorable. The latest arrival, Evita, was enjoying being spoiled - she was only two weeks old.
T
he sanctuary is open for visits (and cuddles ) every Sunday morning from 11am to 2pm. And the age of the visitors doesn't worry them at all – my 90-year-old mother and a two-year old child were greeted with the same gentle affection. For more information visit the website www.ancraa.org or telephone 626 447 976. (Photos by Tony Smith: for more see his website www.taffysmith.com )

BY ADAM MCKAY Starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg and Samuel L. Jackson
S
Allen (Ferrell) is a cop who has never used a gun and is not too keen on front line policing. Terry (Wahlberg) on the other hand is a bit too reckless and as punishment finds himself manning a station desk next to Allen - best friends they are not. Samuel L Jackson and Dwayne Johnson play two heroic action cops hungry for high octane action on the mean streets- but when they hit the sidewalk and
are out for the count station Captain Gene (Michael Keaton) decides it’s time to get Terry and Allen from behind their desks and in the front seats of a patrol car, tasked with bringing down a dodgy financial wizard in the shape of Steve Coogan. So, plenty of decent actors, an "odd couple" plot, some-laugh-out loud lines and some great comic performances - especially from Keaton - make this one of the better comedy offerings of the summer.

Ali G in da Queen
Gone with the wind... If pressed, we can all name the leading actors in Gone With The Wind - and remember that Hattie McDaniel was the first black actor to win an Oscar, for her role as Mammy in the 1939 epic.
Sacha Baron Cohen will play Freddie Mercury in a film telling the story of rock band Queen. The script will be by Bafta winner Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon and The Damned Utd). GK Films, the company behind the movie, have the rights
to include the band's music and surviving members Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon will have a say in the production. The movie will concentrate on the early years, ending with the band's Live Aid performance in 1985.
But who played Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler's daughter Bonnie Blue? Child actress Cammie King, who has died at the age of 76, starred as the feisty tot who broke Rhett's heart after she fell from her horse and said later that Gable was a father figure to her during filming. She voiced Faline, a character in Disney's Bambi, in 1942 and then
retired from acting - a short career featuring roles in two movies that have stood the test of time.

pecial edition releases of blockbusters have over the years pandered to the ego of directors, or maybe are just an irresistible opportunity for studios to rake in yet more income as they re-market their hits from yesteryear.
A
nd it’s possible that both criteria apply to the rerelease of James Cameron’s Avatar. It had only disappeared from our cinema screens for about five minutes when Cameron announced his extended version – an extra eight minutes of footage in a “special edition” which would allow fans to “stay longer”, as Cameron said, in the alien world of Pandora. So, a quick massage to the ego of the director and another opportunity to milk the golden goose – if you will excuse the mixed metaphor. I haven’t seen the new version – it’s only on show in 3D and I suspect I can live without forking out again for the sake of an eight extra minutes.
B
ut there is one special edition I would love to see and that’s the Fritz Lang classic, Metropolis. This was a ground breaking movie in so many ways. It was released in 1927, and cost 5 million Reichsmark to produce – the most expensive silent film ever made. It had an enormous number of extras. Nowadays the swarming mass of workers in the underworld would be created by CGI. But in Lang’s day he used 750 bit players, and a staggering 26,000 male extras, 11,000 female extras and 750 child extras.
I
t was the Blade Runner of its day – a science fiction extravaganza set in a futuristic urban dystopia. The city of Metropolis – and there are few who love movies who will not be able
to mentally conjure up an image of it in their head – is divided into two classes. The planners and management live above the Earth in luxurious tower blocks, while the workers live and toil in the underground hell. The son of the creator of the city finds his way into this terrible world where peoples’ lives are worth nothing and death is a daily occurence. As a result, the two worlds collide as the workers seek their freedom.
I
t was a staggering achievement and over the years there have been attempts to bring the movie to modern day audiences – but with no real success and with some tacky bolt-on bits like horrendously out of kilter soundtrack music.
B
ut in 2008 the curator of the Buenos Aires Museo del Cine in Argentina discovered a copy of the film 25 minutes longer than any other that had previously existed. It was returned to Germany where dedicated experts spent months restoring it and it was released two weeks ago – 83 years after the film’s debut in Berlin during the Weimar republic. It has to be a must-see for film buffs and sci-fi fans and will definitely be on my DVD wish list.
O
f course Blade Runner, directed in 1982 by, Ridley Scott, has had several incarnations, including Scott’s “Director’s Cut” in 1993. Scott took the chance to release the version he wanted to see, without the happy ending that the studio had originally insisted on. I am quite happy with “special editions” and “directors cuts” – after all, I own a few. All I urge is that “new” editions of old classics don’t appear with crudely grafted on 3D – so please George Lucas, rest on your Star Wars laurels!

Party animal Aries! The energy in your chart signals that it is all about having fun, being wild, enjoying the social scene and living life to the full. You will probably find that you have an increase in your energy levels and are well able to take on physical and mental challenges with ease. If any serious business is being undertaken, make sure that you get all verbal agreements written down. Going on a spending spree or splashing out on something you have had your eye on for ages is likely. There could be some difficult challenges in the usual way of doing things and you may need to come up with some innovative ideas to move ahead. This week you really do need to keep focused and not allow anything to break your faith. You will find yourself becoming the centre of attention and have a powerfully magnetic presence about you, use this to your advantage and ask for exactly what you want. Finances are looking up and travel is likely, trust your instincts to lead the way to success. The universe works in mysterious ways; over a period of time there have been events in your life that have brought about the situation you find yourself in today. You could be offered a job opportunity that will lead to further wealth and abundance but this would also contain within it a higher degree of responsibility. The question is whether you really want to ‘take-on’ such a role. Obstacles that arise in the earlier part of the week will be clear by the weekend. Encounters with others bring you into contact with those that have the power to transform your life, a ball was set in motion a while back and now it becomes clear that what is happening now, is laying the foundations for your future happiness. Take each moment as it comes and do not assume anything, one thing is for sure, there are interesting times ahead. If you are single love and romance are due to come knocking – be prepared to be swept off your feet. Pay attention to detail and the overall look and quality of a creative endeavour as it will make your work stand out and be recognized by those that matter to you. On a personal note times are getting intense, a relationship may be reaching an unexpected peak that you could find quite overwhelming. Take some rest and relaxation, some space and time to contemplate and you will know then how you really feel. It is less of a muddle than you think. Habits are being broken one by one; a corner that you have turned has given you an urge to approach life wearing a ‘new hat’. Networking is the name of the game this week and you forge ‘head-on’ into new social situations with an urge to mingle and integrate. Your financial situation may be giving you cause for concern but it is important to remember that this is a period of flux and transition, when it settles down so will the financial worries.
LIBRA
Take things day by day as you are the key to many others success even if you are aware of this or not, the part you play in other s lives is paramount. You have in a nutshell taken the world by storm of late, you have impressed through your hard work and ideas those that matter – is there any stopping you? There may also be a parting of the ways with a dear friend or loved one, September 23rd - perhaps they are moving away and initially you will miss being a part of their October 22nd daily life.
SCORPIO
October 23rd November 21st
What a high pain threshold you have, you feel determined not to let anything get in the way of you enjoying yourself, even with an underlying wound, you forge ahead regardless. There are others waiting for you to take the lead at the moment to assume that top position, as they know you have the ability to focus on what really matters and have the determination to see something through to the end. Passions and feelings are running hot, intimate times ahead.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
Vegetarian Cupboard Red Kidney Bean Curry Ingredients:
(serves 4-6)
● 1 tbsp sunflower oil ● 1 onion halved then sliced ● 1 jar or can red kidney beans drained and rinsed ● ½ red pepper, sliced – you can use frozen if you want ● ½ green pepper, sliced – again, use frozen if you want ● 200ml vegetable stock made with 1 vegetable stock cube ● Naan or pitta bread to serve.
Directions ● Put long grain rice in a pan with plenty of slightly salted water and start cooking. The total cooking time should be around 20 minutes – any more and it'll turn to the consistency of a rice pudding! ● While the rice is cooking, heat 1 tbsp sunflower oil in a frying pan and add the onion, frying until soft. Add the peppers
and the red kidney beans, then pour over a jar of Jalfrezi cooking sauce and mix well. Make up 200ml vegetable stock and add to the frying pan. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. ● Serve with warmed through Naan or Pitta bread.
Treat your pets As promised, here is a follow-up to the article about dog treats a couple of weeks ago. With us getting recipes for all manner of delicious food, why shouldn’t your dog have a treat too! So this week, we’re looking at further safeguards with the ingredients you can use for you pet plus some icing ideas and in two weeks time we’ll start some recipes.
What you will need... CONTROVERSIAL INGREDIENTS ● There are some ingredients in large amounts that can be deadly to your pet. Sometimes those ingredients may be called for in very small "flavouring" quantities. If you see any of these ingredients in a recipe you'd like to use then you should consult with your veterinarian to see if the recipe is appropriate for your pet otherwise leave the ingredient out or select another recipe. Garlic, onions and raisins are some potentially harmful ingredients.
SAGITTARIUS The limitations that you have been used to lately are due to slip away and the plans that you have been dreaming about will seem nearer. Nobody needs freedom more than a Sagittarian and the more you feel restricted the more trapped you also feel. This week will seem like a ‘breaking free’ is happening. Now that Jupiter your ruler has joined hands with Uranus – the world really is November 22nd - your oyster, any ideas about where you would like to go? December 21st

You know what is right for you, set yourself free and refuse to be a nd December 22 part of something that is not aligning itself properly with your life anymore. January 19th
DOG TREAT ICING AND DECORATING ● Homemade dog treats can be left plain or adorned. If you want to keep the sugar content of your treats to a minimum then your icing options will be limited. While use of chocolate is not safe and should not be used in pet recipes you can use carob or even white chocolate which does not contain the harmful compounds of regular chocolate. White chocolate is a typical ingredient in many treat icing recipes. While chocolate is dangerous for dogs, white chocolate is safe. The reason for this is that most of the caffeine substance in white chocolate has been removed. White chocolate is primarily cocoa fat, sugar, milk solids, lecithin and vanilla with next to no "chocolate liquor", the substance hazardous to dogs. These can be used for doggie cakes or biscuits and should be refrigerated:
Ask and you shall receive. There is an uncanny speed about how things are changing and occurring in your world, miracles can really happen if you have the courage to ask for what you want. Even if it is behind the scenes still, rest assured, there is a project being put into place. Home and family issues need to be addressed and sorted out. You may notice there is a lot of anger around at the moment perhaps someone close to you is in an emotional tizzy.
Banana Carob 2 cup mashed banana, 1 tablespoon butter, 6 tablespoon carob flour, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence, 3 tablespoons unbleached flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Blend thoroughly and spread on cool cake. Sprinkle with chopped pecans. The frosting contains carob, which is a safe chocolate-like flavor substitute for chocolate.

There is a current of total support beneath you now allowing you to glide gracefully wherever you feel the desire to go. So expect the unexpected and you will not go far wrong, keeping the light and easy feelings flowing will allow any underlying emotions to be put to rest. You have just left one phase of your life behind and the new vista is looming, take a deep breath and smile.

Men forget more and sooner
Beauty Tip
Warning over UK cosmetic surgery
A new study suggests that men develop mild cognitive impairment, often a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease, earlier and at higher rates than women. Researchers at the Mayo Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centre in the US said the difference is surprising, since dementia and Alzheimer’s are thought to affect more women than men. People with mild cognitive impairment appear to be functioning
normally, but their forgetfulness is beyond what occurs in normal ageing. To determine the condition’s prevalence, Mayo researchers conducted extensive neurological examinations of 1,969 randomly selected 70-to-89-year-olds in
residents. Nineteen percent of the men had mild cognitive impairment, compared with 14 percent of the women. (The percentages do not include those with full-blown dementia, which afflicts roughly 10 percent in this age group.) Besides men in general, subjects found to be at higher risk for mild
cognitive impairment included those who had never been married, those with less than nine years of schooling and those carrying the ApoE4 gene, which is a risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's.
New warning about low-carb diets Atkins-style low-carbohydrate diets help people lose weight, but people who replace the bread and pasta with calories from animal protein and animal fat may face an increased risk of early death from cancer and heart disease. The study analysed data from more than 85,000 healthy women aged 34 to 59 who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study, and almost 45,000 men aged 40 to 75 who took part in the Health Professionals’
Follow-Up Study. Participants filled out questionnaires every four years. The study found that the death rate among people who adhered most closely %

to a low-carb regimen was 12% higher over about two decades than with those who consumed diets higher in carbohydrates. But death rates varied, depending on the sources of protein and fat used to displace carbohydrates. Low-carb eaters who drew more protein and fat from vegetable sources like beans and nuts were 20% less likely to die over the period than people who ate a highcarbohydrate diet. But low-carb dieters who got most of their protein and fat from animal sources like red and processed meats were 14% more likely to die of heart disease and 28% more likely to die of cancer, the analysis found.

The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death has found fundamental weaknesses in the way cosmetic surgery is carried out in the UK. The review of 361 centres found many were failing to assess and care for patients properly. They also found patients were especially at risk from a culture which saw teams "have a go" at operations they rarely performed. A spokesman for the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons said only about a third of plastic surgeons are members. The National Confidential Enquiry said half of the sites it had contacted had failed to answer its questions despite rules saying they should. The researchers from the government-funded safety watchdog looked at all sites that offered cosmetic surgery privately, including some NHS hospitals that have private wings. There are now about 100,000 cosmetic operations carried out each year - a figure which is rising - with breast enlargements by far the most common. The researchers found that psychological evaluation was carried out only in slightly more than a third of centres they assessed. The two-stage consent process, which is recommended to allow patients time to reflect on the treatment, was not performed at 32% of sites. More than half of the operating theatres were not properly equipped and a fifth had no emergency readmission policy, while monitoring before and after treatment was not sufficient, the researchers said. But the strongest criticisms were for the inexperience of some of the teams. The researchers said with the exception of breast enlargement operations, the majority of sites were not carrying out enough procedures to keep their skills up. The Department of Health said the findings cast a "long shadow" over the industry and it expected tougher regulation in the future. In October, a new system is being introduced in England which will cover the cosmetic surgery industry. It will allow the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to fine and prosecute the worst offenders.

Royal Family join nation in cost-cutting
Ratings -it’s war! The gloves are off in the battle for ratings between Strictly Come Dancing and X Factor. Strictly bosses have secured a huge coup for their first live show on Saturday, October 2nd - a performance featuring Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow.
At a time when everyone in Spain is feeling the recession pinch and waiting for the introduction of the Government's austerity measures, the King and Queen of Spain are also tightening their belts. The Royal Family is going to cut its budget for the first time in history and set an example to other European households by possibly becoming the cheapest in Europe. The Zarzuela Palace has revealed that the household budget for 2011 will be lower than this year's - exact figures will be announced later this month when they will be presented
to parliament for approval. Reports have suggested that the cut could be as much as 9 per cent on this year's budget, which was itself frozen at the 2009 level of €8.9 million. The King and Queen have already taken steps to economise - palace staff have had their salaries cut like other civil servants, and the Royal

Queen Sofia famously shocked royal observers by flying on Ryanair when she visited her brother Constantine, the former King of Greece, while he was recovering from surgery in London. Her flight from Santander cost £13 - mind you, that was before taxes, and extra
The current budget puts the Spanish household at No 7 out of 8 European constitutional monarchies. The Windsors top the list with €48.6m, followed by the Netherlands on €39.6m and Norway on €23.1m. Luxembourg is currently bottom with €8.7m.

Apparently X Factor's Simon Cowell is furious at being pipped to the post by the BBC and has told ITV producers they must do whatever it takes to make sure that X Factor maintains its dominance in the ratings war. Robbie and Gary performed together for the first time in 15 years when they sang their duet "Shame" at the recent Help for Heroes charity concert.

Well, you might be able to pop that new outfit into your handbag in the shape of a spray can from next year. Spanish scientist Dr Manel Torres, and Professor Paul Luckham, who work at Imperial College London, have developed a liquid clothing spray that hardens on the body and then turns into a garment that can be peeled off, washed and reused. together and a solvent that keeps them liquid in the can. As soon as the spray touches the body it hardens on the skin and creates a smooth clothing material. The scientists have spent 10 years working on making it a viable commercial product and Fabrican could be on sale next year at just £8. It could be used to create garments, medical dressings or upholstery for furniture - no word on whether you can spray it on over underclothes or whether its a no visible panty line or bra stap alternative.

Microsoft has launched its latest bid to be computer users' default window on to the web. The firm has released a beta, or test version of its latest web browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), which it hopes will help revive its fortunes
in an increasingly competitive market. Since 2003, the company has seen a 97% lead in market share dwindle to 60%. IE9 will compete with new versions of other popular browsers such as Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome. Google
Chrome now commands more than 7.5% of the market, despite only being first released in December 2008. Mozilla, which has recently launched a test version of Firefox 4, has nearly a quarter of the market and in some countries is the dominant web browser.
Many browsers received a boost when the European Commission forced Microsoft to offer users of its Windows operating system a choice of browser, rather than Internet Explorer as a default.

Their call to arms was reportedly prompted by a statement by Indian software firm Aiplex, which told the Sydney Morning Herald that it used cyber attacks on sites hosting pirated movies on behalf of the film industry.

The move follows a meeting with Google, Apple and other companies to discuss how personal data is accessible on line. It comes as the German newspaper Der Spiegel reports that "several hundred thousand" people have opted out of Google's Street View service. Google has yet to launch its service in Germany, following privacy complaints. The German Interior Minister, Thomas de Maiziere, said that the proposal to establish a code by 7 December "met with approval" and that it will enable users to obtain information on the gathering and intended user of data "in a userfriendly way".

While other countries allow users snapped by Street View cars to have their faces blurred, Google Germany is also allowing people to have their homes removed before the service launches. However, the US firm makes the assumption that people consent to the service and then opt out if they have concerns.

Spectacular crash on motorway A lorry driver survived a spectacular crash on a motorway in China when he hit a bridge at the Toudaogou village section of national highway 302. The driver had a very lucky escape when the container he was pulling rose up and crashed, catapulting the cab into the bridge. The accident happened on the motorway near Changchun city, Jilin Province, China.
Stoner wins at last for Ducati Va Va Voom.... Unlucky for some but not Casey Stoner who, after 13 attempts this season, finally got the victory that has eluded the Ducati team. The Australian's 21st MotoGP victory, all with the Ducati team he will leave at the end of this season, came after overcoming an early challenge from title leader Jorge Lorenzo and then pressure from Dani Pedrosa. Stoner kept his advantage over the Repsol Honda rider at just over one-second for most of the race and the Spaniard finally surrendered in the closing stages, allowing Stoner to claim a fivesecond victory. Hayden, who took third place from Lorenzo on the last lap, handing the team its first double podium since 2007. "I am really happy for Casey, Nicky and all the team because today is payback for all their hard work," said team manager
Vittoriano Guareschi. "They have never backed off, even in the difficult moments. We came to a track that nobody had been to before but our bike worked well from the start. Both Nicky and Casey were fast in all conditions and today they produced a fantastic performance.”
For the first time since Valencia 2007, a MotoGP race ended without a Yamaha rider on the podium at Aragon on Sunday. The result also marked the end of world championship leader Jorge Lorenzo's run of 13 consecutive podiums.
Touring cars in return to Donnington
It is capable of 0-62mph in five seconds and has a top speed of 112mph. The DeZir
Gordon Shedden, Tom Onslow-Cole and Matt Neal were the winners at an improved Donnington Park They have now set up a nailbiting, four-way title-decider with Jason Plato on Finals Day at Brands Hatch, Kent on Sunday October 10th. Silverline Chevrolet driver Plato crashed out of Sunday’s first race but later secured a pair of vital third place finishes in races two and three to maintain his lead in the standings – the first of those achieved with a stunning comeback drive from the rear of the grid. The crash happened in race one and was of Plato’s own making after he just touched the rear of Matt Neal’s car, under braking for the new chicane, and sent him flying into the large polystyrene corner markers, and there was then a massive pile up in which Plato came off worst. Neal though was unscathed, and went on to take 5th place in race one while his team mate
Shedden won, with Tom Chilton 2nd and Mat Jackson 3rd. Onslow Cole won race 2 with Shedden 2nd and Plato, after some fantastic overtaking, 3rd. Matt Neal got his win in the third race ahead of WSR BMW driver Robert Collard, and Plato again took 3rd to keep his Championship hopes well alive. The results mean that an unprecedented number of four drivers – the previous record was three – will fight it out for the BTCC title in the season’s final three races around Brands Hatch’s tight and often controversial Indy circuit in three weeks time. Plato will arrive there with a 17-point advantage over Neal with Shedden a further four points adrift. OnslowCole is three more behind – in total with 24 to make up on Plato with a maximum of 52 to be won on the day.
The Renault DeZir comes fitted with a 110kW electric motor powered by lithiumion batteries. It has a range of 100 miles and the batteries can be recharged either by a conventional household power supply or a 400V fastcharge system that charges 80% of the batteries' capacity in 20 minutes. The entire battery pack can also be swapped over in minutes using Renault's quick drop system.
has an energy recuperation system similar to the KERS seen in Formula One. When the car decelerates, kinetic energy is recovered and stored in the battery. This energy can then be used as a temporary power boost, via a button on the steering wheel. The car's front end previews the new front-end identity of all future Renault cars, however the absence of a rear window (replaced by two cameras) is strictly reserved for concept cars. The interior features a onepiece two-seat front bench design.

“This win is a big relief, to be honest!" smiled Stoner. "We had the first race in Qatar wrapped up until I made a mistake and there have been other opportunities to win this year that I have missed out on through my own errors.” Completing an excellent day for Ducati was Nicky
Stoner, Vittoriao Guareschi and Nicky Hayden on the podium
This is the first car produced under the watch of new design director Laurens van den Acker, who's charged with reinvigorating the Renault range after Patrick le Quement's departure. It is an electrically powered twoseater sports car with gullwing doors that will showcase at the Paris motor show in October.

Wenger on FA misconduct charge Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been charged by the Football Association with improper conduct at the end of the Gunners' 1-1 draw at Sunderland. Wenger appeared to confront fourth official Martin Atkinson after Darren Bent equalised for the Black Cats in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Atkinson had earlier shown on his board that four minutes would be played. Wenger said after Saturday's draw at the Stadium of Light: "If you have a watch, you can control. It's as simple as that.”
Cavendish ends in green England Manxman cycles into record book as second Briton to take the sprinters’ title and jersey Mark Cavendish rounded off a terrific Vuelta España with a second place finish in Madrid to secure the points jersey to become the first Briton in 21 years to earn the sprinters' title at a Grand Tour. The Manxman, 25, held on to the green jersey despite American rival Tyler Farrar winning the final stage. Cavendish is only the second Briton to secure a sprint title in one of the top three stage races following Malcolm Elliott's 1989 triumph in Spain. The overall victory went to Vincenzo Nibali who became the first Italian in 20 years to win the overall title. He finished in the peloton on Sunday to win by 43 seconds from Ezequiel Mosquera Miguez of Spain, with Slovakia's Peter Velits third. Cavendish, who won three stages in Spain to add to the five he claimed at this year's Tour de France, finished on 156 points, seven clear of Farrar. The American crossed the line in a little over two hours and two minutes after an 85km ride from San Sebastian de los Reyes to Madrid. HTC-Columbia rider Cavendish had looked well placed to seal his title with another stage victory
will play through gritted teeth
Captain Andrew Strauss has dismissed suggestions England deliberately lost last Friday's third one-day match against Pakistan in return for money.
Mark Cavendish winning an earlier stage at the Tour of Spain
but gave himself too much ground to make up as Farrar burst through in the final 500m. Second was more than good enough, however as Farrar needed Cavendish to finish no higher than fifth as well as win himself to deny the Isle of Man rider the green jersey. Cavendish said: "I didn't expect it when I came here, but I really am pleased that I managed to achieve my first green jersey in a major tour. It's something very special. "The Vuelta is different from other races because there are equal points on offer in the mountains and in the flats, but at the end of
the day it's all about being consistent. "I'm very happy for HTCColumbia all round. We took five stages, led overall, and we got on the podium as well as in the points. It has gone perfectly." Cavendish will now head to Australia, hoping to become the first Briton since Tom Simpson in 1965 to win the World Championships. The Grand Tours are cycling's three major stage races, featuring the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and the Tour of Spain, also known as the Vuelta.
Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt told Indian TV he had heard some England players were paid to lose. But he later told BBC Sport the comments had been taken out of context. Strauss said: "We refute these allegations and will explore with the England and Wales Cricket Board all legal options open to us." He added: "We are deeply concerned and disappointed that our integrity has been brought into question." Strauss admitted the England team had mixed feelings over whether to play Monday afternoon's fourth one-day game against the tourists at Lord's, but decided they had a responsibility to themselves and their supporters. "Under the circumstances, we have
Disappointing derby day defeat for Malaga Malaga 1 - 2 Sevilla, at the Rosaleda Expectations were high following last weekend’s goalfest against Real Zaragoza and Malaga did start this Andalucian derby brightly. Eliseu forced Sevilla keeper Andres Palop into a fine save after four minutes. And exactly 10 minutes later, Palop could do nothing to prevent the home team from taking the lead when he was beaten by Rondon after parrying a header from defender Kris. Malaga's joy was shortlived however, as Sevilla hit back just five minutes later. Diego Perotti went past
Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt
Jesus Gamez as if he wasn't there and sent in a deep cross to the far post for Alfaro, who headed in from close range. Both sides missed good chances in the remainder of the half, Juanmi in particular with Palop making a brilliant save. Mtliga gave away a needless free kick a minute before half time and Caceres popped up to head home Tiberio Guarente's free-kick and the Uruguayan's effort proved enough to win all three points. Negredo hit the bar
strong misgivings about continuing to play the last two games of the current series and urge the Pakistani team and management to distance themselves from Mr Butt's allegations," he said in a statement released by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Butt was asked in the NDTV interview whether the PCB had any proof of the allegations regarding English players. He replied: "Did you ask the other people who made allegations against our players whether they had any proof? What did they say? We have thought about this properly and we have positive proofs here before us just like they say they have.” On Monday morning, Butt was reported to have
for Sevilla in the second period and Malaga showed that they are still unable to break down a good side at home. A disappointing
defeat but Malaga have a great chance to redeem themselves away to Getafe on Thursday night. Report by Scott Forbes
However, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Butt later claimed he was only stating what he had heard and that he had no proof that England's players had thrown the game at The Oval. "The bookies have been talking about it and we will investigate the matter and come up with whatever proof we can provide," he said. "The total statement I made [to NDTV] categorically explained that the bookies are saying this. I am not saying this."."
Commonwealth games at risk Scotland and England's Commonwealth Games teams are concerned that the poor quality of the athletes village in Delhi may put the whole event in doubt. Scottish officials found their original accommodation to be "unsafe and unfit for human habitation".
The home side celebrate Rondon’s early strike
told India's NDTV channel: "There is loud and clear talk in bookie circles that some English players were paid enormous amounts of money to lose. No wonder there was total collapse of the English side."
England are "optimistic" they will compete, but have said the village requires urgent work before the Games begin on October 3rd. Games chief Michael Fennell admits the village is "seriously compromised". The English team claim that India's monsoon weather
has revealed new plumbing and electrical problems ahead of the arrival of their first athletes on Thursday. New Zealand, along with Canada and Northern Ireland, have described the conditions in the Village as "unliveable" and found alternative rooms for their 300-strong contingent of athletes and officials. Team manager David Currie believes the whole event may be put in danger. "If the village is not ready and athletes can't come, obviously the implications of that are that it's not going to happen," he told radio network newstalk ZB.

the
Golf tournament news It was a great week for Britain’s Laura Davies after she completed her 76th career victory at Flamingos Golf Club in Benahavis, last Sunday, after Friday’s round was postponed due to thunderstorms. The 350,000 euros tournament was sponsored by the Costa del Sol tourism board and driven by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG).
Laura Davies with the trophy
Davies shot a final round level par 71 to win the open de Espana Femenino. She finished at eleven-under-par for the tournament and secured a 2 stroke win over England’s Rebecca Hudson, Australian Frances Bondad and United States Christina Kim. The four-time major champion said it was one of the best wins of her life. Elsewhere, at the Austrian Open, David Lynn came back in 30 on his way to an eight-under-par 64 to share the third-round lead. Starting three behind the leaders, the Englishman secured four birdies that
took him to 13 under. Unfortunately for Lynn his great golf didn’t get him the win as Manuel Lara triumphed in a play-off with Lynn to win for only the second time on the the European Tour, and in doing so save his European Tour card. So yet another win for Spain in this unforgettable summer of sport. Spaniard Lara, 33, had carded a fourth-round 64 to claim a share of the lead with the 37-year-old Englishman Lynn (68) on 17 under par after 72 holes. And after Lynn made a hash of his tee shot at the first extra hole, Lara made par for his victory. England's Danny Willett bogeyed the last three holes to finish joint third with US Open champion Graeme McDowell. With preparations well on the way for Europe’s Ryder Cup, there’s good news for world number three Lee Westwood as he now feels confident he will be able to play all five rounds of the Ryder Cup in the clash against the United States next month, after recovering from a leg injury. The 37year-old, who hasn’t played since early August, has torn the plantaris muscle in his right calf. "I haven't had any
pain for three weeks," he said in a recent interview. "I've made great progress. I'm pretty strong at the moment. If called upon I'd be fine playing in all five matches." There’s hope too for Tiger Woods after Padraig Harrington has warned Europe to beware of a motivated Tiger at next month's Ryder Cup against the United States. 2010 is the Chinese year of the Tiger but so far it’s not been much of a year for Tiger Woods, who has had a tough time lately, both on and off the course, but Harrington said: "He'll be in fighting mood, in a mood to perform. The Ryder Cup could be the pinnacle of his year, like it could be for me." And when asked whether he felt US captain Corey Pavin had made the right decision in picking Woods, Harrington replied: "Yes, 100%, absolutely - he is the number one golfer in the world and he's been showing good form of late.” It seems the ups and downs of golf are all just par for the course! The Lauro Club won the trophy and became the first team to do so in what club captains Frank Ball and Lennie Dineen hope will become a regular event each summer. Over the 6 matches played Lauro won 4 – 2, and everyone who took part agreed that it was a fantastic event and look forward to next year. Report and photo Amber Dineen

That’s just not cricket old boy England’s broken relationship with Pakistan plumbed new depths as Jonathan Trott grabbed Wahab Riaz by the throat at Lord’s and Andrew Strauss had to be talked out of leading his players in a strike. Tempers reached boiling point ahead of the fourth NatWest one-day international when the two players clashed in an extraordinary scene in the nets and had to be separated by England batting coach Graham Gooch.

Murray: “I need to be fitter and stronger to match Nadal.” British number one Andy Murray says he needs to get physically stronger and improve his game if he is to challenge world number one Rafael Nadal. The Scot, 23, made a disappointing thirdround exit at the US Open,
which Nadal went on to win and so complete the career Grand Slam. "I've got four or five months before the next Slam," Murray told BBC Sport. "I need to get physically stronger, improve my game
and then I'll give myself the chance to beat him." Murray had gone into the US Open with many predicting he could win his first Grand Slam title after a superb run at the Toronto Masters in the build-up, beating Nadal and
Roger Federer on his way to winning the tournament. But a surprise four-set defeat by Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka ended his hopes in the third round. Murray pledged that it would not happen again.

An angry Honduran goalkeeper shot at a journalist with an air gun at the weekend. In an act reminiscent of an incident involving Diego Maradona in 1994, Motagua goalkeeper Donaldo Morales shot at reporter Saul Carranza because of criticism of his performances in the sports daily Diez. Maradona shot at reporters with an air rifle when they were staking him out.

Messi out for at least two matches Barcelona star Lionel Messi will miss at least two matches with an ankle injury picked up in Barcelona's 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in La Liga. The Argentine was carried off in second-half injury time after a tackle by Atletico defender Tomas Ujfalusi. Tests confirmed ligament damage to the Argentina forward's right ankle. Messi, the World Player of the Year, will miss the games against Sporting Gijon and Athletic Bilbao, with further tests to follow at that point.
