What a change in the weather! last week it absolutely tipped down here in coin and people were running for cover. At least it gets better at night so we can all get some sleep. The weeds in the garden have shot up what seems like overnight. We used to spray them first to kill them, then rotovate them in but we're not allowed to do that anymore without first having done a course, in Spanish, to make sure you know what you're doing. I fully understand that people have to be kept safe and there has been an awful lot of spraying willy nilly – not least from my Spanish neighbour who mixes his own concoction with who knows what. However, due to the work I did in the uK I had certificates for handling far more dangerous chemicals but they don't recognise them here – typical. On Saturday evening we went to a great 50th birthday party at a friend of our’s house so, congratulations to Elaine on her 50th and well done Sue for organising a fabulous party for your sister. It must have been a lot of hard work and she had a great time.....wanna be my sis too?! Then disaster struck on Sunday. I had a favourite pair of bright pink reading specs which I tend to keep hooked over the front of whatever I'm wearing when I don't need them on my face. Anyway, I bent down to open my gates, got the car out and then realised I hadn't got them anymore. Yep, I'd run them over. Back to Specsavers then! luckily I have spares.

Guardia Civil protest goes ahead Thousands of Guardia Civil marched through the streets of the capital on Saturday after Madrid's High Court of Justice overturned the government's attempt to ban the march. Members of the National Police and the Army were there to support them. One of their main demands is for the same pay and working hours as the National Police. The country's 84,438 Guardia Civil agents work 13 hours more per month

than the National Police and earn €200 less. The Guardia who rise up through the ranks also want to be on an equal footing with those who come as officers from the Zaragoza Military Academy. Another main worry is a shortage of

EU money supports Spain's 'blood fiestas'

The Toro de la Vega event, considered one of the worst fiestas by Spain's own animal protection groups, involves hundreds of men chasing the bull through the streets, ,beating it with sticks and pelting it with stones. When the bull reaches the meadows (La Vega) outside town, men on horseback skewer it with eight-foot long spears, until the bull is finally put out of its misery. It’s one of hundreds of blood fiestas which are far more

common than the regular bull fights, and kill thousands more animals than bullfighting, said Penman. The event is now on YouTube and has drawn critical comments from as far afield as Australia. The town s mayor defended the fiesta but 300 members of the El Refugio animal defence group witnessed it and have asked the government to legislate to end “such cruel spectacles”. The Mail article said that the European Union spends £37 million a year directly subsidising blood fiestas like the Toro de la Vega and other blood sports. Some MEPs are campaigning to have

bullfighting and blood fiestas officially recognised as part of Europe’s cultural heritage, but Jaqueline Foster, Conservative MEP and vice-president of the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals said EU money should not be used to subsidise bullfights and blood fiestas across Spain. Penman’s article cites Finca Valdeolivas, where the bull killed in Tordesillas was bred. The owner refused to talk to him, but Penman examined EU’s accounts and discovered that it received at least £139,000 in subsidies last year. He said it was impossible to say what proportion directly supported the rearing of bulls but the

Spain's so-called “blood fiestas” came under the world-wide media spotlight this week as Spanish animal defence protesters called on Prime Minister Jose Luiz Zapatero to ban cruel practices. Daily Mail reporter Danny Penman wrote a horrified eye-witness account of the Toro de la Vega ‘blood fiesta’ in Tordesillas last week and looked at the link to EU money.

Six die during bull runs The death of a 56-year-old man in the bull run during the town’s annual feria brought the total of people killed by bulls this summer to six – five of them in September. A 19-year-old man was gored fatally in Fuentesauco, Zamora province on July 3rd; while four men and one woman have died after being gored so far this month. The 44-year-old woman was gored through the barrier at the bull run in Arganda del Rey, Madrid. MADRID

Spaniards becoming less tolerant This year’s SOS Racism in Spain annual report shows that 44% of Spaniards believe that the presence of so many immigrants is harmful for the country. Just over a quarter believe gypsies should be expelled while a similar number would send all Moroccans home. Despite the fact that unemployment among immigrants is twice the national average, many Spaniards continue to feel they are taking jobs away from the local people. The report indicates tolerance of illegal immigrants is almost zero.

Live cricket work closes art show An art gallery in Caceres was forced to close down a show just a day after it opened because of an installation by artist Ismael Alabado featuring 400 crickets stuck to a canvas. On opening day a woman sprayed them with insecticide “to put them out of their misery” before reporting the gallery to the Guardia Civil animal protection unit Seprona. Seprona agents visited the gallery and seized a box full of live crickets which were presumably to be used to replace any crickets that died. Later that day, Extremadura

‘Tea Party’ star in witchcraft row Controversial Republican candidate for the US Senate, Christine O’Donnell is trying to play down revelations that she dabbled with witchcraft in high school. She asked “How many of you didn't hang out with questionable folks?” a day after a clip of her discussing the occult was rebroadcast. Ms O'Donnell admitted dabbling in witchcraft during a 1999 taping of comedian Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect" show. She also said: "One of my first dates with a witch was

on a satanic altar, and I didn't know it. I mean, there's little blood there and stuff like that." In clips previously released by Mr Maher in the wake of Ms O'Donnell's victory last week, Ms O'Donnell's views on sexuality have already been scrutinised. Mr Maher says he has more embarrassing

According to UNAids, 22 countries in the world's worst aﬀected region had seen a drop in new cases of more than 25%. However, UNAids noted that cases of HIV are on the increase in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and among gay men in developed countries. UNAids also said there are now 5.2 million people worldwide receiving treatment for HIV/Aids,

which has helped to ensure that 200,000 fewer people died from the virus in 2008 than in 2004. Michel Sidibe, UNAids executive director, said the world was making "real progress" towards achieving the sixth

Millennium Development Goal (MDG6) of halting and reversing the spread of HIV/Aids by 2015. He said the fall was because of greater awareness and better use of preventative measures. The UN has called for greater investment in HIV/Aids

Former Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt has written about her six-year ordeal of being held hostage by FARC rebels in her book Meme le silence a une fin (Even Silence Has An End), due to be released later this week. Ms Betancourt recounts how she was repeatedly beaten, humiliated and threatened with death while being kept prisoner in Colombia's jungle. She reveals that it was at times very difficult to keep hopes alive. "We were handed the heaviest sentence a human being can be given, that of not knowing when it would

end." Ms Betancourt was seized by Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) gunmen in southern Colombia as she campaigned for the presidency in February 2002. She was released in July 2008, when the rebels were tricked into handing her and 14 other hostages over to soldiers who were masquerading as members of a humanitarian group volunteering to fly them by helicopter to a new location. The book is due to be released later this week in Colombia, France and the United States.

Newspaper seeks drug gang guidance El Diario de Juarez, which is published in the heartland of the Mexico’s drug war has asked cartels for guidance on whether it should publish stories on the conflict. The paper has become known for its strong reporting from the deadly streets of Ciudad Juarez but the killing of a 21-yearold photographer last week prompted the newspaper to run a frontpage editorial asking: "What do you want from us?" Journalists are regularly being targeted by

drug gangs and the USbased Committee to Protect Journalists has said than 30 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2006. Editor Herardo Rodriguez said the newspaper had not decided to stop publishing stories on the drug war,

but would consider doing so if the answer that came from the cartels indicated that was their wish. Describing El Diario as a "very aggressive" organisation that "searches for the truth", he conceded that the paper might have to scale back its work if the violence did not stop: "We may

Far-right election gains protested Thousands of people staged a protest in Stockholm on Monday, against the election to parliament of 20 members of the Sweden Democrats far-right party, which opposes immigration and has been accused of racism and intolerance. Its 5.7% of the vote came at the expense of the centreright Alliance of Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt who has said he will seek the support of the Green Party for his new government, which is currently allied with the centre-left Social Democrats. A town of 108 nationalities Immigrants from 108 different countries currently reside in Roquetas del Mar, Almeria province, making it the most multicultural town in Andalucia. The foreign community makes up 40% of the town’s population of 90,000. Of these just over 10,000 are from Romania, the

most numerous, followed by 2,960 Moroccans. The least numerous are one person each from Kazajstan, Tanzania, Somalia, Croatia and the Lebanon. Nearly all the South American countries are represented as well as every EU country and several African countries.

Gibraltar apology for police incident Family steps up

Chief Minister Peter Caruana apologised to the Spanish government after it was reported in the Spanish press that two Royal Gibraltar Police had entered a house in San Roque and seized evidence in connection with a robbery at a jewellery shop in Gibraltar.

The Spanish Foreign Ministry immediately lodged a "strong protest" with the British Embassy in Madrid and with the Gibraltar government, demanding an explanation. In a press release in Spanish, the Gibraltar government conceded that the two officers had acted incorrectly but believed that because they entered the house accompanied by the

owner they were not exercising police powers in Spanish territory. The jewellery shop was broken into on August 4, and two men – a Gibraltarian and a Briton – were arrested but managed to escape and flee across the border to San Roque where the Gibraltarian and his girlfriend lived. The girlfriend refused to allow the RGP officers to enter the house on a first visit and reported the matter to the Guardia Civil. However, they returned with the owner of the house and seized £2,000, another sum of money in euros, three motorcycle helmets, a bunch of keys and a rental contract for the house.

search for hiker On September 24, it will be exactly two months since hiker and speleologist Juan Antonio Gomez Alarcon disappeared on a hike over the the Mijas Sierra between Churriana and Ojen. The family has never given up hope of finding him and has posted photos of him all along the Costa del Sol, as well as profiles on Tuenti and Facebook. Although the Guardia Civil gave up their search after about two weeks, the family have been asking for volunteers to continue the search every weekend. This weekend, they will make a special effort and will start

the search on Friday. The search will continue on Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 9 pm both days. The meeting point for volunteers will be at the Osunillas sports ground on the A-368 one kilometre from Mijas Pueblo. The 32-year-old hiker was last seen at Fuengirola bus station. He was wearing grey trousers and shirt and carrying a small backpack. As far as his family know, he was not carrying his mobile phone, his ID card or money.

Huge fine for splashing pedestrians The town council at Carboneras has introduced new regulations which will force motorists to slow down when driving through puddles to avoid splashing passers-by or face a fine of at least €600. People who hang washing on their balconies will also face a similar fine. Critics say the council should examine its own behaviour – this council issued the permit for the construction of the huge Algarrobico hotel on one of the few unspoilt beaches in the Cabo de Gato-Nijar natural park, protected by the national environment law.

Town honours victims of both Civil War sides Archaeologists have found the remains of the five people they were searching for in a mass grave in Alfarnatejo, a village of 538 inhabitants 60 kilometres north of Malaga city. Two of the men were local farmers who were assassinated by Republican militiamen at the start of the Civil War and the other three – two local policemen and a young man – were executed by Franco's forces after they took the village early in 1937. The town's Socialist mayor, Antonio Benitez, has asked towns in the rest of the country where mass graves are being opened to do the same. He said: “We must contribute to putting an end to all this so that the families can close their wounds”. The great nephew of one of the policemen agreed. Chiringuitos to open all year round Mijas Council has decided to break with the seasonal opening of the town's chiringuitos in an effort to attract visitors to eat at them in winter as well as during the summer. The councillor in charge of tourism, Salvador Gallardo, said the decision had been reached together with the Association of Mijas Beach Businessmen. The idea had originally been put forward by the Mijas Tourism promotion Group which consists of representatives of both the public and private sectors. Sr Gallardo told reporters: “Visitors and local people can enjoy Mijas' beaches all year round, thanks to the good weather we enjoy practically the whole year round.” He said the chiringuito owners would draw up a work plan so that not all of them would be open at the same time, because “they'll be catering to a lower number of visitors”.

Black, white and shades of grey What strike?

ince the Law of Historical Memory came into force in December 2007, not a week goes by without a mass grave being dug up or another statue of Franco being removed from a pedestal in some town or other. Street names are being officially changed all over Spain, although the local people continue to use the old names glorifying El Caudillo or one of his generals or ministers. The latest “outrage” to get the politically correct up in arms is that a plaque honouring Franco still adorns a façade at Seville University, No doubt it will be torn down soon, leaving a gaping hole that will never be repaired, more likely than not.

ut all things pass, like the whitewash that hides the housing ministry plaques bearing the Falangist symbol over the doorways of many houses here in Coín which were built in the 1950s. Those houses were very solidly built and will be around long after the modern blocks flung up on the edge of town start falling apart. And the council still hasn't made a move to change the name of a street called after the Blue Division which Franco sent to fight for Hitler on the Russian front, or the one called Quiepo de Llano, the bloodthirsty general who frightened Andalucians to death with his threats on radio during the Civil War. But perhaps he's tolerated because he despised Franco, who got rid of him on a flimsy pretext not long after the war ended.

suppose the next step will be to rewrite history. The Ronda town council has already made a half-hearted effort to do this “by omission” on a website giving the history of the town. There are pages and pages describing the coming of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Moors but only a couple of paragraphs are devoted to the civil war years. Perhaps that's an attempt to skirt round the memory of the 514 people who were thrown into the gorge by Republican militiamen in the first two months of the war. I read somewhere recently that in fact it wasn't the local people who committed that atrocity by militiamen sent out from Malaga to clear the province of Franco sympathisers.

n fact there's plenty of evidence that Malaga was in the vanguard when it came to atrocities committed by the Republicans which is quite understandable – but not justifiable when you remember the huge gap between the few rich and the masses of poor people in Andalucia in those days.

ut all things will pass – and if the Partido Popular wins the next general election, no doubt the Historical Memory Law will be left to quietly moulder. The Left likes to give the impression that the Partido Popular Franco's rightful heir, as they call it – has always refused to do anything for Franco's victims. In fact, it voted for

compensating them with pensions before it came to power in 1996 and approved the opening of the mass graves in 2000 – without making too much of a fuss about it.

nd there's the crux of the matter. For the Left, it's all black and white, whereas the Partido Popular realises there are too many shades of grey. I don't quite know how to go about it, but I intend to try to trace the political affiliations of the parents and grandparents of today's Socialists. We know Zapatero's grandfather was shot for his Republican sympathies by his fellow military who sympathised with Franco. But no-one else in the government says anything about what happened to their parents and grandparents during the Civil War which makes me suspect they have something to keep quiet about.

ivil wars are very messy – they divide families, towns and regions into “goodies” and “baddies”, with the “goodies” being the “baddies” and vice versa, depending on which way an individual looks at it.

ranco was definitely a baddie by anybody's yardstick but he certainly wasn't the baddest of them all, as today's Left tries to make out. He always claimed that one million people died to save Spain from Communism but unbiased historians agree with Hugh Thomas who says in his book, The Spanish Civil War, that the loss of lives from all causes, including the deaths from malnutrition on the Republican side was about 500,00 of whom some 200,000 or 10% of the total combatants were killed in action or died of wounds – 90,000 on Franco's side and 110,000 Republicans. Murders or executions behind the lines accounted for another 130,000, some 10,000 died during bombardments and another 100,000 were executed or died in jail after the end of the war – some 800,000 in all. How paltry - Hitler, Stalin and Mao must be laughing in their graves. More on that next week.

hat if they held a strike and nobody came? That’s what the leaders of the nation’s two biggest trade unions fear will happen during next Wednesday’s general strike which has been losing impetus from the first day it was called. The CCOO and UGT want to ensure nobody goes to work that day so they have devised a plan to seek the closure of nearly all rail services and to prevent all international flights from leaving Spanish airports. Their proposals form part of a list presented to the Public Works Ministry on Monday of the minimum services the unions pledge to provide during the strike as part of their good faith gestures with the government. Rubbish. It is a scheme to ensure that more than half of Spanish workers won’t be able to show up at their jobs. But the serious aspect of this blueprint is their petition to ground most passenger jets which only serves to compromise national security. The CCOO and UGT want to create chaos and seek international headlines. The ministry was to answer their demands at press time yesterday but officials were proposing 20-percent to 25-percent service for rail and air transport that day.

he union’s have called this strike to protest the government’s austerity measures, especially the 5% public servants’ wage cuts that took effect in July. The CCOO and the UGT – once in a cosy relationship with the Socialists – are demanding that Prime Minister Zapatero cancel his labour reform package, and take back his plans to freeze pensions next year and raise the retirement age. They can strike all they want, says the prime minister, but the austerity programme stays. His tough stance has put him in direct confrontation with labour – a sector that delivers so much of the Socialist votes – and will no doubt result with biting consequences for the ruling party in the upcoming regional elections in Catalonia and next year in Madrid and Valencia .

et it was the unions who had been telling Zapatero not to budge when this nation found itself quickly sinking in financial quicksand without offering the government something to grab on – not even an alternative solution or suggestion so that the Socialists could keep the pinch from becoming the punch that many Spaniards have suffered. Fernando Toxo of CCOO and the UGT’s Cándido Méndez said earlier this month that the prime minister should take no notice of the strikes and protests occurring in neighbouring France. By criticising every step the government takes but without throwing out any concrete ideas of their own, the CCOO and UGT have pretty much took the same policy strategies of the opposition Popular Party. Recently, Mariano Rajoy, the PP leader, admitted: “I know about economics. I’m not an economist but I know about economics

and I have aides whom I consult.” That’s pretty scary coming from a man who wants to be prime minister at all costs even though he lost the last two elections to Zapatero.

ow the unions want to strike. When the national work stoppage was first announced in May, more than 20% of Spaniards polled thought it would be a good idea and said they would be taking part. Earlier this month, that same poll showed less than 10 percent said they will participate. I don’t think that this loss in support has anything to do with demonstrating things are improving – far from it. At 20%, unemployment is through the roof but public spending has stopped and the government had to throw out its own rope – in the form of an austerity package – to keep this country from being swallowed by that rising quicksand. On September 29th, I plan to be at my work station like many of my other colleagues, not because we are content with this country’s current financial status but because we have no faith in Toxo and Méndez.

Tough primary

espite what the polls in Madrid say, the upcoming Socialist primary is going to be a tough one to call. The leader of the Madrid Socialist Party (PSM), Tomás Gómez, and Health Minister Trinidad Jiménez have both presented the 6,000 signatures they each need from their supporters to make their candidacies officials. The October 3rd primary will decide who will run next year against incumbent regional premier Esperanza Aguirre of the Popular Party. Early polls had shown that Jiménez had more support among Socialists for the nomination but lately Gómez has been closing the gap. The PSM leader had been given a raw deal by the Socialist leadership, especially by Zapatero, who insisted that Jiménez was the preferred choice among the party’s hierarchy.

ince 2007, Gómez has been saying that he wants to be the Socialist contender in Madrid and nobody questioned his ambitions until this summer when he was asked to step aside and let Trini run. He refused and, rightly so, forced the party to put the question to the voters in Madrid as should be the case in any democratic party.

Wow! What a week This week there is an incredible number of events coincidentally happening at the same time. I’m sure that the astrology community will have something to say about it - perhaps we’re all doomed or something! Tomorrow, Thursday 23rd, is the autumn equinox; that is the day half way between the longest day in summer and the shortest day in winter. No matter where you stand on the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole you will get 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. From now on the days will become longer than the nights, as winter draws in. The reason that we have seasons is because the Earth is not standing straight up but instead is tilted over by about 23 ½ °. When the Northern half of the Earth is pointed towards the sun we get summer, but when it is pointed away from the sun then we get winter - tomorrow is exactly half way between these two dates. We get the same thing happening in March, which is the spring or Vernal equinox. As a side note, Easter is calculated from the spring equinox and falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon that occurs after the spring equinox. That is why Easter moves around so much! Talking about the Moon, from ancient times each full moon throughout the year has been given a special name: the Hunter’s Moon, the Wolf Moon and the Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox and is usually the largest moon. It isn’t actually any bigger than the other full moons, it is just an optical illusion that makes it appear bigger than all the others. Well this year the Harvest Moon occurs on the same day as the equinox and so should appear

absolutely huge tomorrow, try it out for yourself. Now as if that isn’t enough then the very bright star that you can see in the sky at the moment is the planet Jupiter, and this week Jupiter will be at its closest to the Earth in over 200 years. If you have binoculars or a telescope try having a look at Jupiter and you should be able to see the stripes crossing its face, these are the tops of the clouds that essentially make Jupiter. Look out also and you will see up to four tiny ‘stars’ either side of Jupiter, these are its four largest moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. To complete the line up, the planet Uranus also comes its closest to the earth and should be visible just slightly above Jupiter. If you focus your binoculars onto Jupiter then Uranus should be visible in the same field of view, appearing as a bluish green disc. If you would like to see all these amazing events then join us tomorrow (Thursday 23rd) at the Fuengirola astronomy society which is at the El Coto bar and restaurant along the Avenida de Mijas coming out of Fuengirola. I will be giving an illustrated talk about the seasons, the Moon and Jupiter at 8pm, then, weather permitting, we will be going outside and using the many telescopes that are there so we will be able to look at the Moon, Jupiter and Uranus.

One of the main requirements is for a person with administrative experience, who must be computer literate; also someone with nursing experience to complement the present team. Also required are car drivers willing to take elderly or

sick people to hospital for tests and appointments as well as driving someone to the shops, bank or to the doctors. If you are not a car driver you can help in other ways, including visiting housebound residents as they would be glad of an hour's conversation or similar. CAP are back Club Charity and Pleasure is a social, non-profit making organisation based at El Paraiso Country Club, Estepona. Members meet at 11 am each Wednesday morning for coffee and speaker and their weekly activities include bridge, whist, bowls, art classes and Spanish lessons for beginners. Other events and excursions include visits to the theatre and exhibitions, lunches and dinners at different venues along the coast, mystery trips, etc. Their full programme of events is published in their free quarterly magazine and regularly updated online. Apart from enjoying themselves they raise money for local charities: mainly Aprona, Aspandem, Cudeca and Los Claveles.

A diamond of a night for Cystic Fibrosis funds

Pete (Neil Diamond) Nabarro as usual wowed the audience with his singing at the T.O.P.S. recent fundraising evening in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. The event, held at Restaurant Carolina in Alhaurin el Grande, was a sell-out with over 90 people attending for a super meal and an excellent cabaret. During the interval twentythree year old Becky Spencer (who suffers from

the disease herself) took to the stage and belted out a couple of popular songs, to the delight of everyone there. Pete very generously offered his singing talent (and his sense of humour) free of charge and treated the audience to a night of popular and lively entertainment. The generosity of the guests resulted in almost 500 euros being raised for this worthwhile charity.

CHAIN hike for NUTS Scottish veterinary students who spent part of their summer visiting local animal refuges and helping out with vet work are stepping out on Saturday September 25th to raise awareness and money for local charity CHAIN. Cultural Festival returns to Parque Miramar For the second year running the Parque Miramar Shopping Centre in Fuengirola is putting on a cultural festival that promises a weekend of great music, great food, great prizes and loads of fun for all the family. The British Festival Weekend will take place on Friday and Saturday 24th and 25th September from 4pm and will celebrate British Festival Culture at its best. There will be bands, performers, food and activities, that capture the spirit of a typical British Festival, celebrating the best of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. few kilometres inland from the coastal strip at Estepona you can visit Finca Los Pajaritos where a remarkably dedicated couple, Marlene and Steven Byrd, have established a breeding sanctuary for these rather special animals, supported totally by private funding, public donations and volunteers.

nce as synonymous with Spain as castanets, flamenco dresses and black bulls, the humble donkey has been overtaken by mechanisation and modern developments and is becoming an increasingly rare sight. This is particularly true of the native Andalucian donkeys, often referred to as giants because of their greater size and strength. For centuries they were used to carry water, olives, fruit, cork, building materials,

attraction. They also have a wonderfully gentle nature, are very sociable and extremely intelligent, more so, many would maintain, than horses. They are also, apparently, quieter and more reliable to ride. If you think all donkeys are stubborn come and learn more about these!

The females just can't get enough attention and the foals, naturally, are adorable. The latest arrival, Evita, was enjoying being spoiled - she was only two weeks old.

Allen (Ferrell) is a cop who has never used a gun and is not too keen on front line policing. Terry (Wahlberg) on the other hand is a bit too reckless and as punishment finds himself manning a station desk next to Allen - best friends they are not. Samuel L Jackson and Dwayne Johnson play two heroic action cops hungry for high octane action on the mean streets- but when they hit the sidewalk and

are out for the count station Captain Gene (Michael Keaton) decides it’s time to get Terry and Allen from behind their desks and in the front seats of a patrol car, tasked with bringing down a dodgy financial wizard in the shape of Steve Coogan. So, plenty of decent actors, an "odd couple" plot, some-laugh-out loud lines and some great comic performances - especially from Keaton - make this one of the better comedy offerings of the summer.

pecial edition releases of blockbusters have over the years pandered to the ego of directors, or maybe are just an irresistible opportunity for studios to rake in yet more income as they re-market their hits from yesteryear.

nd it’s possible that both criteria apply to the rerelease of James Cameron’s Avatar. It had only disappeared from our cinema screens for about five minutes when Cameron announced his extended version – an extra eight minutes of footage in a “special edition” which would allow fans to “stay longer”, as Cameron said, in the alien world of Pandora. So, a quick massage to the ego of the director and another opportunity to milk the golden goose – if you will excuse the mixed metaphor. I haven’t seen the new version – it’s only on show in 3D and I suspect I can live without forking out again for the sake of an eight extra minutes.

ut there is one special edition I would love to see and that’s the Fritz Lang classic, Metropolis. This was a ground breaking movie in so many ways. It was released in 1927, and cost 5 million Reichsmark to produce – the most expensive silent film ever made. It had an enormous number of extras. Nowadays the swarming mass of workers in the underworld would be created by CGI. But in Lang’s day he used 750 bit players, and a staggering 26,000 male extras, 11,000 female extras and 750 child extras.

t was the Blade Runner of its day – a science fiction extravaganza set in a futuristic urban dystopia. The city of Metropolis – and there are few who love movies who will not be able

to mentally conjure up an image of it in their head – is divided into two classes. The planners and management live above the Earth in luxurious tower blocks, while the workers live and toil in the underground hell. The son of the creator of the city finds his way into this terrible world where peoples’ lives are worth nothing and death is a daily occurence. As a result, the two worlds collide as the workers seek their freedom.

t was a staggering achievement and over the years there have been attempts to bring the movie to modern day audiences – but with no real success and with some tacky bolt-on bits like horrendously out of kilter soundtrack music.

ut in 2008 the curator of the Buenos Aires Museo del Cine in Argentina discovered a copy of the film 25 minutes longer than any other that had previously existed. It was returned to Germany where dedicated experts spent months restoring it and it was released two weeks ago – 83 years after the film’s debut in Berlin during the Weimar republic. It has to be a must-see for film buﬀs and sci-fi fans and will definitely be on my DVD wish list.

f course Blade Runner, directed in 1982 by, Ridley Scott, has had several incarnations, including Scott’s “Director’s Cut” in 1993. Scott took the chance to release the version he wanted to see, without the happy ending that the studio had originally insisted on. I am quite happy with “special editions” and “directors cuts” – after all, I own a few. All I urge is that “new” editions of old classics don’t appear with crudely grafted on 3D – so please George Lucas, rest on your Star Wars laurels!

Vegetarian Cupboard Red Kidney Bean Curry Ingredients:

(serves 4-6)

● 1 tbsp sunflower oil ● 1 onion halved then sliced ● 1 jar or can red kidney beans drained and rinsed ● ½ red pepper, sliced – you can use frozen if you want ● ½ green pepper, sliced – again, use frozen if you want ● 200ml vegetable stock made with 1 vegetable stock cube ● Naan or pitta bread to serve.

Directions ● Put long grain rice in a pan with plenty of slightly salted water and start cooking. The total cooking time should be around 20 minutes – any more and it'll turn to the consistency of a rice pudding! ● While the rice is cooking, heat 1 tbsp sunflower oil in a frying pan and add the onion, frying until soft. Add the peppers

and the red kidney beans, then pour over a jar of Jalfrezi cooking sauce and mix well. Make up 200ml vegetable stock and add to the frying pan. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. ● Serve with warmed through Naan or Pitta bread.

Treat your pets As promised, here is a follow-up to the article about dog treats a couple of weeks ago. With us getting recipes for all manner of delicious food, why shouldn’t your dog have a treat too! So this week, we’re looking at further safeguards with the ingredients you can use for you pet plus some icing ideas and in two weeks time we’ll start some recipes.

What you will need... CONTROVERSIAL INGREDIENTS ● There are some ingredients in large amounts that can be deadly to your pet. Sometimes those ingredients may be called for in very small "flavouring" quantities. If you see any of these ingredients in a recipe you'd like to use then you should consult with your veterinarian to see if the recipe is appropriate for your pet otherwise leave the ingredient out or select another recipe. Garlic, onions and raisins are some potentially harmful ingredients.

DOG TREAT ICING AND DECORATING ● Homemade dog treats can be left plain or adorned. If you want to keep the sugar content of your treats to a minimum then your icing options will be limited. While use of chocolate is not safe and should not be used in pet recipes you can use carob or even white chocolate which does not contain the harmful compounds of regular chocolate. White chocolate is a typical ingredient in many treat icing recipes. While chocolate is dangerous for dogs, white chocolate is safe. The reason for this is that most of the caﬀeine substance in white chocolate has been removed. White chocolate is primarily cocoa fat, sugar, milk solids, lecithin and vanilla with next to no "chocolate liquor", the substance hazardous to dogs. These can be used for doggie cakes or biscuits and should be refrigerated:

Warning over UK cosmetic surgery

A new study suggests that men develop mild cognitive impairment, often a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease, earlier and at higher rates than women. Researchers at the Mayo Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centre in the US said the difference is surprising, since dementia and Alzheimer’s are thought to affect more women than men. People with mild cognitive impairment appear to be functioning

normally, but their forgetfulness is beyond what occurs in normal ageing. To determine the condition’s prevalence, Mayo researchers conducted extensive neurological examinations of 1,969 randomly selected 70-to-89-year-olds in

residents. Nineteen percent of the men had mild cognitive impairment, compared with 14 percent of the women. (The percentages do not include those with full-blown dementia, which afflicts roughly 10 percent in this age group.) Besides men in general, subjects found to be at higher risk for mild

cognitive impairment included those who had never been married, those with less than nine years of schooling and those carrying the ApoE4 gene, which is a risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's.

New warning about low-carb diets Atkins-style low-carbohydrate diets help people lose weight, but people who replace the bread and pasta with calories from animal protein and animal fat may face an increased risk of early death from cancer and heart disease. The study analysed data from more than 85,000 healthy women aged 34 to 59 who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study, and almost 45,000 men aged 40 to 75 who took part in the Health Professionals’

The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death has found fundamental weaknesses in the way cosmetic surgery is carried out in the UK. The review of 361 centres found many were failing to assess and care for patients properly. They also found patients were especially at risk from a culture which saw teams "have a go" at operations they rarely performed. A spokesman for the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons said only about a third of plastic surgeons are members. The National Confidential Enquiry said half of the sites it had contacted had failed to answer its questions despite rules saying they should. The researchers from the government-funded safety watchdog looked at all sites that offered cosmetic surgery privately, including some NHS hospitals that have private wings. There are now about 100,000 cosmetic operations carried out each year - a figure which is rising - with breast enlargements by far the most common. The researchers found that psychological evaluation was carried out only in slightly more than a third of centres they assessed. The two-stage consent process, which is recommended to allow patients time to reflect on the treatment, was not performed at 32% of sites. More than half of the operating theatres were not properly equipped and a fifth had no emergency readmission policy, while monitoring before and after treatment was not sufficient, the researchers said. But the strongest criticisms were for the inexperience of some of the teams. The researchers said with the exception of breast enlargement operations, the majority of sites were not carrying out enough procedures to keep their skills up. The Department of Health said the findings cast a "long shadow" over the industry and it expected tougher regulation in the future. In October, a new system is being introduced in England which will cover the cosmetic surgery industry. It will allow the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to fine and prosecute the worst offenders.

Microsoft has launched its latest bid to be computer users' default window on to the web. The firm has released a beta, or test version of its latest web browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), which it hopes will help revive its fortunes

in an increasingly competitive market. Since 2003, the company has seen a 97% lead in market share dwindle to 60%. IE9 will compete with new versions of other popular browsers such as Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome. Google

Chrome now commands more than 7.5% of the market, despite only being first released in December 2008. Mozilla, which has recently launched a test version of Firefox 4, has nearly a quarter of the market and in some countries is the dominant web browser.

Spectacular crash on motorway A lorry driver survived a spectacular crash on a motorway in China when he hit a bridge at the Toudaogou village section of national highway 302. The driver had a very lucky escape when the container he was pulling rose up and crashed, catapulting the cab into the bridge. The accident happened on the motorway near Changchun city, Jilin Province, China.

Wenger on FA misconduct charge Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been charged by the Football Association with improper conduct at the end of the Gunners' 1-1 draw at Sunderland. Golf tournament news It was a great week for Britain’s Laura Davies after she completed her 76th career victory at Flamingos Golf Club in Benahavis, last Sunday, after Friday’s round was postponed due to thunderstorms. The 350,000 euros tournament was sponsored by the Costa del Sol tourism board and driven by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG).

Davies shot a final round level par 71 to win the open de Espana Femenino. She finished at eleven-under-par for the tournament and secured a 2 stroke win over England’s Rebecca Hudson, Australian Frances Bondad and United States Christina Kim. The four-time major champion said it was one of the best wins of her life. Elsewhere, at the Austrian Open, David Lynn came back in 30 on his way to an eight-under-par 64 to share the third-round lead. Starting three behind the leaders, the Englishman secured four birdies that

took him to 13 under. Unfortunately for Lynn his great golf didn’t get him the win as Manuel Lara triumphed in a play-off with Lynn to win for only the second time on the the European Tour, and in doing so save his European Tour card.
