The Paper That ’s Going Places!
MONDAY, APRIL 15, 2013
Mystery man revealed in Epic Life Challenge 2.0 My name is Adam Kozakiewicz and I’m losing weight for St. Joseph’s Genera l Hospita l Foundation. I have decided to embark on this endeavor not only to lose weight and get into shape, but I hope to help our community. It is not only possible to lose the excess pounds but also to keep it off. With the help of our community’s health care professionals and you, I know I can do it. Our doctors along with you will be able to see my progress. At this point the doctors have created the first part of the plan, and the
formula is simple. Calories consumed, minus calories lost from exercise, equals weight gain or loss. Therefore, I will limit myself to about 2500 calories per day and start with at least two community walks every week. I have decided that I will limit the amount of sugar and bread I will consume to a minimum (I found that it helps with my mood and cravings). I will weigh myself every Monday morning at the hospital and report this to the paper and our doctors. In addition I want the community not only to donate per pound of
lost weight to the Hospital Foundation but also take active part by way of community walks and exercise. I will start by walking for about an hour twice a week on Monday and Thursday starting at 6pm by the Rotary clock downtown 50 Street and 50 Avenue. Please come out and join

Anne Kerychuk embraces 95 years of living her smile, you feel an embrace. She’s a delightful person and I cherish her. Actually, I think everyone feels this way that knows Anne.” Elizabeth Giebelhaus added, “Many years ago, Leola Nawrot used to take children to sing at Viking Lodge. There were always
beautiful flowers and years later, I found out that Anne planted them. She was a friend to our children and grandchildren. They loved her and her garden.” United Church Women (UCW) organized this birthday party to honour Anne Kerychuk.

Rosanne Fortier Family, friends and acquaintances poured into the Homestead Lodge in Vegreville on March 28 to celebrate Anne Kerychuk’s 95th birthday. During this time, Happy Birthday was sung. After well wishers ate strawberry shortcake and drank tea, they gathered around Anne to embrace and present her with a card. Anne’s eyes glowed when anyone came near her. “I love my friends and anyone who wants to be my friend, I love them,” Anne said in a warm tone. “Anne is a wonderful person that I always enjoyed having in the congregation. She loved to teach and even helped me to speak Ukrainian. For seven years, I considered her to be my adopted mother. She’s really bright too because she learned to speak and write English on her own,” Rev. Ken Flanagan said about Anne. Rev. Carolyn Woodall continued with positive comments about Anne. “I’ve known Anne for 15 years because she used to work in the hospital in Viking. Her husband John

Anne is special because she is such a hopeful, giving person that radiates love. This draws people to her. Just by BEGINNING MAY 1, ALBERTANS WILL PAY THE LOWEST PRICE FOR GENERIC DRUGS IN CANADA.

Smile of the
WEEK
KLEIN
N O T F O N D LY R E M E M BERED BY ALL
It was quite interesting to read your article on the late Ralph Klein, less for what was said but for what was omitted in the description of his premiership and his legacy. For instance, the comment about “not... assuming taxpayers can be increasingly gouged to pay for political vote buying” laughably included no mention of the “Ralph Bucks” cheques that were sent out to voters. Nor does the paragraph on the description of the “Klein government exit(ing) the business of being in business” make any mention of the privatization of electricity and natural gas. With regards to the latter, I for one recall the Klein government’s promise that privatization would lead to lower utility costs, and promise that was shown have no basis in reality from the first utility bills that arrived after power and gas were handed over to private hands. How many hundreds and thousands have families paid in the years since that decision was made? Have the heightened utility rates that we were promised wouldn’t happen truly been a policy to “benefit families most of all”? I do not believe Klein lacked the foresight to know the inevitable
results, but even if he was not lying to Albertans, we should not celebrate the legacy of a man so willing to gamble with our money on a hunch that utility costs would be reduced. I for one will not pretend that Klein was a great leader of the province. Only in Alberta could a man like Klein have continued to be elected based on the strength of having a PC attached to his name. Klein will always be to me the premier of the Multi-Corp scandal, his drunken rage in a homeless shelter, trying to bring about twotiered health care and too many other examples to name. Some may criticize me for speaking ill of the dead, but I had nothing good to say about the man in life and see no reason to pretend I do now. Ian Stewart BENOIT

Advice for claiming the disability tax credit Many qualifying taxpayers miss claiming the Disability Tax Credit because they don’t think it applies to their situation. Here is some advice for Canadians who may qualify for the Disability Tax Credit: - Review your situation: The Disability Tax Credit has criteria you must meet in order for you to qualify. In particular, your disability must make it extremely difficult or time-consuming to carry out basic activities of daily living even if you are undergoing therapy and using appropriate devices and medications. - Duration of disability: The impairment must last or be expected to last 12 months and severely restrict your ability to see, walk, speak, hear or perform personal care activi-
ties or seriously affect your mental capacity to manage your personal affairs. - Multiple impairments: The disability definition has been expanded to allow for the cumulative effect of multiple impairments that individually would not be severe enough to qualify. For example, a taxpayer with multiple sclerosis who constantly experiences fatigue, depression and balance problems may qualify. - Complete paperwork before you file: You need to be approved by the Canada Revenue Agency before you can claim the Disability Tax Credit on your tax return. Your doctor needs to complete a T2201 (Disability Tax Credit certificate) and mail it to the CRA. Once
you are approved by the CRA, you can claim the non-refundable amount on your tax return. You cannot claim the credit without CRA approval. - Non-refundable credit: The Disability Tax Credit cannot generate a refund on its own. It can only be used to reduce your tax payable. - Transfer to spouse: If you cannot use all of your Disability Tax Credit on your return, you may be able to transfer the unused amount to a spouse or adult child. - Retroactive claims: If you did not realize you were eligible for the credit when you filed your return, you can request adjustments for up to 10 years under the CRA’s Ta x payer Rel ief Provisions. You will need
to file a T1 Adjustment form for each year you need to amend. - Paying a percentage of your refund: Claiming the Disability Tax Credit is a straightforward process and all the paperwork is available online or through the Canada
Revenue Agency. You should have your own physician complete the T2201 since they know your condition best. You do not need to pay a percentage of your refund to take advantage of this program. A tax professional at

Is this the top of the market? I won’t keep you in sus- when the client is in cash, pense. I don’t know, but we Yes, it will also indicate are getting close and if you when to get back in when apply what is laid out here the market turns bullish you will not lose your money again. Brokerage comas you did in 2008. panies really don’t If you own mutual care if you lose funds, ETFs or money. During stocks you will 2000 break and know more than the 2008 crash 90% of the brokers and fund mangers. they all made THE ALCHEMIST money. As long as The few who know Al Thomas the investor has on what is shown here will not apply it for their a position they make about clients. Why? Because it 1%. Not much, but one will show the investor how heck of a lot better than the to be out of the market 40% loss for the client. That during major down moves. is why they preach They don’t make money BuyNhold.
Up and down cycles are normal. When an investor learns how to take advantage of them he makes money. Otherwise, he is a loser. One of my subscribers called me about a week ago. He was getting nervous because the market was approaching the two previous highs where his account had taken a dive. His account was $107,000 in 2000. It declined and came back up to about $107,000 in 2007 and dumped again. Today it has come back up again. Now what? For the past 12 years he
has not made any money. He is NOT “even”. The purchasing power of the 2000 dollar is much less today than it was due to inf lation. He has lost money. Most people have. Here is the very simple method that works extremely well for all major indexes, mutual funds and ETFs. In every country. On your computer put up a 5-year weekly chart of your fund. Most folks haven’t seen their portfolio come back to “even”. Add a 40-week Simple Moving Average. You must learn to “time
the market”. Of course, your broker will tell you it can’t be done. He is either lying or stupid. It is easily seen the DIRECTION of the line. When the line is going down the investor is in cash. When the line turns up the investor is long (owns) equities. Do not pay attention to the price penetration of the line by the fund. Only when the line turns down the investor sells at whatever price the equity happens to be. Period. End of story, This works well for mutual funds and ETFs, but not as well for individual stocks.

Royal Purple and Kinsmen encourage residents to roll up sleeves to save lives Canadian Blood Services Canadian Blood Services relies on the support of community volunteers to host mobile blood donor clinics throughout Alberta. For over 50 years, the dedicated members of the Royal Purple and Kinsmen have been lending their valuable time to help promote blood donor clinics in Vegreville. These generous community members also fill the vital role of volunteer at each clinic, providing excellent customer service to donors. The Royal Purple and Kinsmen will be hosting a blood clinic in Vegreville on Tuesday, April 23 from 4-8 pm. Every minute of every day, someone in Canada needs blood. In most cases, blood from more than just one generous donor is needed. We need communities to rally together because it takes many donors to help save a life of a hospital patient. On average, up to five donors are needed to help someone undergoing heart surgery. Despite our growing population, the number of active donors has increased by only one per cent over the last ten years. Almost 1500 new donors are required in Alberta alone to meet anticipated need this year. As the average age of donors in Alberta is 39, we are calling on young donors to book an appointment to donate blood today. Healthy people can donate blood every 56 days at the age of 17. First time donors
after the age of 61, or regular donors who want to continue donating after their 71st birthday will need to consult their doctor for medical permission to donate.

After days of sunshine and puddles, it seemed that the wintery weather was over. Unfortunately, hopes were shattered as wind and snow
made for a very blistery Friday. People were forced to bring out their snow clearing tools, just as these workers did in the Social Center parking lot, and venture outside in the hopes that Mother Nature would be kind and make this the final snow fall of the season. (Courtney King/ Photo)

Willy Wonka figure skaters whirl at candy coated carnival Rosanne Fortier Gum drops, candy tops and more sweets blazed as candycoated figure skaters bobbed; danced, twirled in spins and axels, all the while using grace and control to create artistic perception in various genres of music during the Vegreville Figure Skating Club’s presentation of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory Carnival on March 17 at Vegreville Arena.
Around 150 attendees were at this event. While there, the audience ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ at the time they issued a ready applause. During each set of skaters, the performers continued to show pizzazz. A 50/50 raffle, door prizes and a silent auction was available and for hungry souls the regular concession was provided by Vegreville Arena. Tracey Giffin is the
Fundraising Chairperson for this Carnival. “Our skaters are 3 to 18 years old. This event is organized by the skating executives who feel it’s beneficial for children to engage in a healthy lifestyle, while learning both the artistic and technical techniques that help them enjoy the sport while they grow and develop at the same time as skaters,” Giffin stated. “Our coaches chose the
theme which is provided by Skate Canada.” Everyone has a chance to get involved with figure skating. “We’re always seeking more volunteers, coaches, and figure skaters. They are definitely welcome to participate with the figure skating club. New registrations will be taken in September since the season is wrapping up now.” Giffin added.

Puppeteers deliver vigorous puppet show Rosanne Fortier Wide eyed wonder amid bursts of laughter floated through the ECS classroom while puppets came to be alive during the interactive, hands-on presentation of Puppet Tree House with Cindy House at St. Martin’s School on March 11. From this play, the children learned about 423 finger, mouth, hand and glove - stuffed special pup-
pets through storytelling and singalongs. During this time, students re-acted familiar and their own puppet voices while everyone was given a chance to be puppeteers. When done, Cindy House told them that they did very well in this role. Later, the little old lady who swallowed a fly waited and watched and finally found out why she might
have died. Students fed her a bird, goat, etc. while a young lad commented, “She’ll need an x-ray after swallowing all those animals.” As well, all students had a chance to participate as puppeteers and when they were asked what their favorite part of the show was they replied that they liked all of it, the three little pigs, big bad wolf, and when
the goat was eating the grass. From the experience of having the children take part in the show, they observed that puppets can play an essential role in the creative expression of the students, while leading them to explore their abilities and learn new skills, all in a fun environment.

Renovations at Beaver County office on schedule Beaver County Submitted “The contractors have completed some of the more time-consuming projects, including interior demolition, asbestos abatement and framing, but now expect to make significant progress on
the finer details,” said Margaret Jones, Assistant CAO, Beaver County. Here is a summary of the work currently being done: -Drywall installation has begun. -The elevator lift will be framed in the next couple of
weeks. -Mechanical rough-in continues. The architects, contractor and safety codes inspector continue to work together to -address the challenges that have resulted from the low ceilings in the basement.
-Furniture needs are being assessed and an order will be placed soon. -The design for the rear parking lot is currently being developed. County staff will be doing some of the landscaping. The complete renovation project includes lowering the public reception area, adding wheelchair accessible washrooms and refurbishing the entire space. No additions have been made as the current building offers adequate space for County staff. The construction project is being completed by Reed Atwood Builders; the tendered cost was $1,739,000. Additional costs have been incurred for unexpected asbestos abatement. The
renovation is primarily being funded by the province’s Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) program, as well as County reserves. Staff have been working out of the Ag Shop (5223 - 46 Street, Ryley) since August 2012, and will continue to do so until the renovation project is complete. “With renovations expected to be complete in June, we encourage residents to visit us at our temporary location until further notice,” added Jones. When you visit the County Office, please adhere to the signed access and parking locations. The area is an active worksite with graders, gravel trucks and other equipment moving around.

We have to hide our heartache When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you. Silent are the tears that fall. Living our lives without you Is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us. Your heart was kind and true. And when we needed someone most We could always count on you. The special years will not return When we were all together. Vegreville-Wainwright, admits to sending a letter to the RCMP, asking that late abortions be investigated as homicides. Later in the article, Mr. Benoit says his letter has generated very productive discussion and debate. In my view, it is one thing to generate debate; it is quite something different to ask the RCMP to open a criminal investigation. Mr. Benoit says he is not being judgmental but it sure seems to me that asking the RCMP to consider murder charges is being very judgmental. In Mr. Benoit’s letter to the RCMP, did he file a complaint, including the names of the women who he wanted them to investigate? If so, where did he get the names? I thought personal health records are private and confidential. Did he really expect that the RCMP would launch an investigation just because a MP asks them to? Mr. Benoit has been our elected representative for quite some time now and has he not learned the accepted procedures to ask federal officials to conduct investigations? Did he access research through the federal Departments of Health, Justice or Public Safety? Did he consult with the ministers of these departments or did he just act on his own whim? I wonder if Mr. Benoit has written other letters to the RCMP, asking them to investigate other serious matters such as Employment Insurance fraud, questionable Senator living allowances, extravagant MP expense accounts, fraudulent GST claims, guaranteed income supplement payments to seniors and
other important federal matters, or is he just concerned about abortions? Mr. Benoit claims to have seen the issues that have arisen. I really doubt that; I suspect he only wants to see one side of things. I, too, have seen some of the issues. Many years ago, as a probation officer in Edmonton, I supervised two women who were placed on probation for attempting to procure an abortion, contrary to the Criminal Code. At the time, abortion was dealt with mainly as a criminal matter, not a health issue. When I asked them to tell me about the offence, they replied matter-of-factly: “We couldn’t manage being pregnant so we used bleach and coat hangers”. That explanation changed my previous simplistic views on the issue dramatically! I quickly realized that factors such as poverty, coping with unplanned pregnancies, lack of access to safe health services, single parenting, support of social services, and family dynamics are a few of the factors that make this a very complicated issue. And Mr. Benoit thought a police investigation was the answer? What is he thinking? On Sunday, March 10, 2013, I had the honor to attend the International Women’s Day Awards Ceremony in Sherwood Park where terrific women from Strathcona County were honored for their achievements. Mr. Benoit was listed on the official program to bring greetings, along with the Strathcona Mayor and the local Member of the Legislative Assembly. He failed to attend and no

explanations were offered as to his non-appearance. It seemed unusual to me that a politician would not take part as planned in such a prestigious event. I overheard someone say about his absence: “There’s been a change of plans.” I wonder if his efforts to criminalize women led to him being “uninvited” to the celebrations? Some of Mr. Benoit’s colleagues in the House of Commons have recently resigned or been replaced for doing really stupid things. Doesn’t his behavior on this issue – asking police to investigate personal health matters - merit the same consideration? Doug Heckbert Fort Saskatchewan, AB H AT S

I would like to extend a bouquet to the investigative reporters at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) for exposing the extent of tax avoidance and evasion in Canada. It is my hope that the CBC exposure will result in a public clamor that spurs the Harper government into action. The very rich should not be allowed to have their way with politicians, and, by extension, the general public. If that lost revenue were to be recovered, it would go a long way toward paying for social services and infrastructure renewal, and reducing or eliminat-
