Wild horses could not drag Mark Trabysh away from the rodeo sport he’s come to love.
The Hairy Hill cowboy has not only grown to love competing in wild horse races, he’s taken on the leadership role as President of the Canadian Wild Horse Racing Association.
He’s come a long way since he first began wild horse racing in 2000. His long-time friend Mark Sawchuk first introduced him to the sport. Sawchuk went pro and competed at the elite level for six years. The duo met up again in 2007.
Even though Sawchuk retired, Trabysh has continued to compete on the circuit. “I really enjoy competing.” He said it’s one sport where he can use the full extent of his muscles and loves the physical and mental challenges of the sport.
You have to be able to think on your feet in the fast-paced environment as the strategy continues to change as the seconds tick by in the timed event. Trabysh said the key to success is having a team that’s in sync and teammates you can trust and rely on.
Winning the Bruce Stampede in 2006 and 2009 were highlights for Trabysh. With his teammates Jason Moore, (earman) and Austin Henderson, (racer) he was hoping to earn another championship in Sunday’s performance at this year’s Stampede. Even though they didn’t take the tile, they enjoyed competing in the event, and will be back on the road again very soon as they travel from rodeo to rodeo this summer.
