There was plenty of fast paced action on the hardwood this past weekend as St. Mary’s Catholic School and Vegreville Composite High School (VCHS) hosted their annual senior boys’ and senior girls’ basketball tournaments.
St. Mary’s hosted the senior boys’ teams while VCHS hosted the senior girls’ teams. The opening game at VCHS saw the Cougars tip-off against the St. Mary’s Saints. The Cougars downed the Saints by 25 points.

St. Mary’s Saints senior girls’ head coach Mark Kobelsky said they won their first game of the year by defeating Holy Rosary by a score of 50-11 Friday evening. They lost their semi-final game Saturday to Marwayne by a score of 45-25. The girls finished in fourth place after losing to EH Walter from Paradise Valley 52-32 in the bronze medal game.
VCHS Athletics Director Jeremey LaRose said, “The Lady Cougars battled all weekend and had to overcome losing a teammate to injury early in game two against E.H Walter but still were able to win that game, sending them to the semi-finals. They played a very good Marwayne team in the finals, but were able to hold them off, controlling play most of the game and winning Gold.”

The opening game at St. Mary’s for the senior boys saw the Saints tip-off against Bonnyville Comp. They handily won by a score of 74-38. In their semi-final game Saturday morning, the Saints defeated VCHS by 10 points, (73-63) which propelled them into the championship final.
LaRose said, “The boys squad fought hard, but couldn’t overcome their slow start in their bronze medal game and came up short, finishing in fourth place.”
Kobelsky said, “The Saints senior boys finished second, gaining the silver medal, after a loss to John Mallard High School, a 2A school from Devon.”
