pointed but we knew we had provincials in Sylvan Lake and we definitely bounced back for those.” Sweeting and her team would then head to the Scotties in Montreal, which is, according to Sweeting, the goal of every curler in the country. “Every girl on the team growing up wanted to be there and it was an amazing experience. There was an army of volunteers, our own personal driver, and even now, hearing stories from people about where they were when they were watching the games you get a real feeling of support. It’s incredible,” she said. Sweeting and her team fought their way to the gold medal match at the Scotties, but unfortunately came up with the silver with Rachel Homan, whom Sweeting had bested in Winnipeg earlier in the season, taking the win. And Vegreville cheered loudly and proudly, happy for Sweeting no matter the result, and happy to adopt her as their own – never mind this born-inSaskatchewan business. Looking forward, Sweeting will head with her team to

Alice Fedoruk revels in life’s lessons Michael Simpson Editor It’s no surprise that Vegreville loves Val Sweeting – we’ve even posted it on a bulletin board. The Saskatchewan-born turned Vegreville resident curled her way into the hearts of many when she took the province by storm at the

the Roar, Canada’s Olympic curling trials where, despite pulling off an early upset start where she beat defending Scotties Champion Rachel Homan of Ottawa. “We had a good start there,” Sweeting said. “But unfortunately we didn’t make the playoffs. I’m not going to lie, we were a little disap-

General Tax Tips - Make sure you file your tax return on time if you have a balance due, even if you cannot pay them right away. By doing so, you will at least avoid the late filing penalty. This is currently calculated as five percent of your balance due, plus one percent per month for a maximum of 12 months. - If you turn 19 before April 1, 2015, make sure you file a 2013 income tax return and apply for the GST/HST credit. You will then receive at least one GST/HST Credit cheque for the payment dates following your birthday. For example, if you turn 19 in March 2015, you will receive the last quarterly payment for the July 14 to June 2015 benefit period, which is paid in April 2015. - If you have not claimed the charitable donations tax credit after 2007, any cash donations you make after March 20, 2013 will be eligible for the first-time donor super credit. This will provide you with an additional 25% credit on your first $1,000 of donations. - Old charitable donation receipts that you forgot to claim in previous years should not be thrown away. Charitable donation receipts are good for five years after the year in which the donation was made. - If you use public transit you may claim the cost of your monthly passes. You may also claim weekly passes if they are purchased over a period of four consecutive weeks and the cost of an electronic payment card if it is used to make at least 32 one-way trips during an uninterrupted period not exceeding 31 days. Seniors vulnerable to fee increases In January 2013 residents who used eight cubic meters of water paid $34.76 for their utility bill; that included a charge of $6.00 for the solid waste fee. In January 2014 the cost increased to $42.20 for the same usage. This includes the solid waste fee that was $6.00 last year and has increased to $12.00. This calculates to be a utility bill increase of 21.4% This does not factor in the water rate increase effective February 1st. According to the Bank of Canada the consumer price

index rose by 1.24% during year 2013. Ask any senior living in Vegreville how much their Old Age Pension has increased. According to my calculation their OAS increase of 1% works out to be $5.47 per month to cover all expense increases. Seniors may earn 0.25% when their bank balance is $3,000 or more in a savings account. It is most evident that many people will “run out of money if they live to be 100. William R. Hamm

Snow cover has farmers optimistic about spring growth AFSC Submitted As the February 28 dead-

line approaches for Vegreville-area farmers to insure their pasture and hay

John Kresowaty with AFSC reminds area producers of the upcoming February 28 deadline to insure hay and pasture in Alberta. He says above average to normal snowfall across most of the province has many livestock producers feeling hopeful about the growth they’ll get on their hay and pasture this year. (AFSC/Photo)

land this year, above-average to normal snow cover across most of the province has many livestock producers feeling hopeful about the potential growth they’ll get on their hay and pasture once the snow melts this spring. “We had a dry fall in many parts of the province with very limited moisture in September and October, but the producers I talk to are feeling encouraged by the amount of snow we’ve gotten so far this winter,” says Barry Yaremcio, a provincial beef and forage specialist with the Alberta Ag-Info Centre. Dry Soil Conditions Beneath the Snow While the deep snow has been challenging for some producers – preventing cattle from swath grazing or winter grazing earlier in the season than usual – it should help offset dry soil conditions that lie beneath the snow in many regions – depending on how it melts, says Yaremcio. “If we get a slow melt and the ground takes up most of the moisture, it should help See Story......................... Alice Fedoruk revels in life’s lessons

Alice Fedoruk taught school for 40 years. She is a lady who receives life in whatever fashion it appears in. Her wisdom, experience, sense of humor and optimistic attitude enlightens a person as they further their acquaintance with her. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)

Rosanne Fortier Alice Fedoruk is a former teacher who taught school for 30 years. She is a well centered lady who receives life in whatever fashion it turns to. Her wisdom, experience, sense of humor and optimistic attitude enlighten a person as they further their acquaintance with her. Alice grew up on a farm north of Vegreville in the Warwick area. “I had a typical childhood for my generation. We were poor but so was everyone else. We had shelter, clothing and food. Some of our clothing was hand me downs and nothing was wasted but our expectations were minimal. There were four children in my family, one boy and three girls. I am the third child. For toys, we invented our own games. “We had very good parents who were fair to us. At seven years old, we helped out on the farm but we weren’t expected to do anymore than we were able to. “We walked two miles each way to school. In winter time, we rode in a cutter (sleigh),” Alice chuckled while she explained what a cutter was. “When the younger sister started school, we went by horse and buggy,” Alice added. Alice’s eyes shone as she described the highlights in her young life. “For us, a trip to Vegreville was very significant, a major event. I remember the Agricultural Fair in late July. I enjoyed the lights, music, activities, rides and See Story.......................... Page 18

kick-start growth on our hay and pastures this spring. But if we get a quick melt,

most of that moisture will likely run off and collect in the sloughs and creeks with minimal benefit to the dry soil,” he explains, adding 10 inches of snow is equal to about one inch of water. $4.4 Million Paid on Hay and Pasture Insurance Claims Last year, dry conditions in early spring and late summer triggered more than $4.4 million in hay and pasture insurance claims in some areas across the province, including the County of Minburn, says John Kresowaty, with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). AFSC is the Crown corporation that provides crop insurance to Alberta farmers on behalf of the provincial and federal governments. “When the rain finally came in late May and June, we ended up with strong growth on hay and pasture in most regions,” says Kresowaty. He notes last year’s total payout is among the lowest in more than a decade due to favourable precipitation and good growing conditions in June and July. The highest payout years for hay and pasture insurance were during the droughts of 2009 when $56 million was paid in claims, and 2002 when $89 million was paid out. In the County of Minburn, provincial moisture maps show that soil moisture beneath the snow as of late January generally ranges from low in the East to extremely low in the West. Snow cover is generally near normal. Perennial hay and pasture crops depend on plenty of moisture early in the spring for healthy growth, says Grant Lastiwka, a provincial livestock forage busi-

ness specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD). “As a general rule, 70 to 90 per cent of the yield potential of pasture and rangeland is determined by early June across southern Alberta, and by early July across the rest of the province,” he explains. So while snow melt can help, getting adequate spring moisture and rainfall during April, May, and June ultimately determines whether producers will get good production on their hay and pasture each year, says Lastiwka. Of course, nobody can predict what will happen this spring, says ARD provincial soil moisture specialist, Ralph Wright. “It could be wet or the snow could melt quickly and things could turn hot and dry. If it’s a cold spring, the snow could linger, delaying hay and pasture growth. There are still two months of winter left. Anything’s possible. It’s really a waitand-see game because weather is so random,” says Wright. Unpredictable weather is the biggest reason Alberta producers insure about 7.5 million acres of hay and pasture across the province every year through AFSC Perennial Insurance programs, says Kresowaty. Spring Rain Needed Cattle producer Sheldon Hauca says a heavy blanket of snow on his cow-calf operation north of Vegreville near Willingdon has him feeling fairly positive about his hay and pasture this year. “We were dry in the fall so I’m hoping the moisture from this snow carries on into the spring. I badly need my hay and pasture and if we get a really dry spring like we did a few years ago, it stunts plant

growth for the whole season,” he says, referring to the 2009 drought that hit his farm. Hauca didn’t insure his pasture that year, but has taken insurance every year since then. “It provides some money to buy replacement feed if we have a catastrophe. Otherwise the cows would have to go,” he explains. 12 New Weather Stations Added New to Perennial Insurance this year is the addition of 12 new weather stations to the provincial network AFSC uses to determine payouts on Perennial Insurance programs for hay and pasture. “We now have 238 weather stations across Alberta that measure precipitation and other weather data,” says Kresowaty, noting one of the new stations is near Ranfurly, southeast of Vegreville. “It’s important to have as many stations as possible so clients can select stations in close proximity to their land base that best represent weather conditions on their farm,” he says. Farmers who take Moisture Deficiency Insurance on their pasture or include it as a rider on hay insurance select up to three weather stations, he explains. If accumulated moisture at these stations falls below normal over the growing season, a claim is triggered. Kresowaty says hay insurance also insures against yield losses caused by perils such as hail, flood, insects, disease, lightning, winterkill, and wildlife damage. For more information about Perennial Insurance, farmers can contact their local AFSC Branch or the AFSC Call Centre at 1877-899-AFSC (2372) before the February 28 deadline.

ADAMS, Lucky When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remembered them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind… Loved by John, Stanley & Betty

such a big town then.” When asked what her first

impression of school was, Alice said, “My sister and

brother were in school so I just accepted going to school. I liked learning and didn’t find any subject difficult. “We went to a two-room school which held Grade one to five. “It was neat when you got your work done; you listened to the other classes. “I had plenty of friends and everyone accepted each other. If kids were younger or older, it didn’t matter. “I was very lucky because I had good teachers who I liked a lot. I had the same teacher from Grade one to five. She was caring and fair. An example of what a teacher should be like. “For high school, I went to Vegreville to the old brick school. This was a significant experience because the school was big and I had more teachers and different classes. But I stepped right in and kept up with the pace. It was neat because I had some of the same friends from the other school. Today, I am still friends with some of them.” Alice went on to be a teacher. “During WWII, the

choices and money wasn’t around so one of the fastest ways to get into the workforce was to become a teacher. I went to Edmonton Normal School but that was taken over by the RCAF for training, so we went to Garneau School. “I got a job soon afterwards. Anyone who wanted a job back then, had a job. “I could have become a teacher because I had relatives who were educators and it seemed to be an honorable profession. “The most important thing for a teacher to install is good work habits, self-discipline and literacy. Education is the pathway to what is going to happen later on in a person’s life. It was true then and now. If you apply yourself, there will be choices for you and if not, there won’t be.” “I really enjoyed the parents and students. It was so rewarding to watch the students grow and develop. The last few years I was teaching, a teacher was a student of mine, which was interesting. Alice loves her former students. She demonstrated this as she embraced and spoke to a man who visited Homestead

Lodge while I interviewed her. “Today, I love seeing my former students develop into the wonderful adults who offer me their help. It’s great to see them having success with their career choices too. Alice got married and had two sons. “My husband and I grew up together. He was a teacher too. We had a very good marriage for 56 years. I feel that being married to him and raising my two sons was the best part of my life. I left the classroom temporary to be home with my sons when they were young.” “With the kids, we traveled during summer vacations and went to every province and capital city where we saw all the landmarks. This must have been educational for my boys because it was for me.” Alice spoke about her life now. “I really enjoy life in general, Vegreville and especially, Homestead Lodge. Some people complain but they would probably complain if they were in heaven. “Vegreville just needs more shopping facilities, more variety and choices, so a person doesn’t have to go out of town. It’s hard to go to Edmonton when a person is older.” Alice took me on a tour of Homestead L od ge. “Homestead Lodge is a very good place to be. It’s very friendly, you’re well looked after by the staff who are considerate and accommodating and the care is very good. The meals are excellent, the residents are friendly and they get along fine. We help each other whenever we can. If you want company, you can have it and if you want to be by yourself, you just need to lock your room. There is plenty of entertainment and sitting and recreational rooms. But if you need a lot of care, this might not be the place for you,” Alice concluded.

Pelvic Floor Home of the Week Exercises: Vital for Women’s Health Iwona Gabrys Clinical Exercise Specialist Alberta Health Services Pelvic floor muscles are like any other muscle in your body; exercising these muscles will provide more strength and support in the pelvic floor. Pelvic floor muscles support the organs in the pelvis including the bladder, rectum, vagina, and uterus. When the pelvic floor muscles are weak these organs may not function properly. Weak pelvic floor muscles can lead to stress incontinence or a pelvic organ prolapse. Whether a woman has stress incontinence or a pelvic organ prolapse, exercising the pelvic floor muscles is vital in order to maintain a healthy pelvic floor. Stress incontinence -or the involuntary loss of urine - can be triggered by sudden pressures such as coughing, sneezing, or jumping resulting in leakage of urine. A pelvic organ prolapse, a bulge of either the uterus, vagina, rectum, or bladder through the vaginal opening, is due to weak ligaments and weak muscles of the pelvic f loor. By strengthening the levator ani and perineal muscles, the muscles around the opening of the urethra,

vagina, and rectum, women can regain muscle control of these areas. Women who are at greater risk of developing stress incontinence or a prolapse are those with excess body weight, which puts additional pressure on the organs. Women who have had a natural childbirth, a forceps assisted delivery, or recent pelvic surgery are also susceptible. To properly engage the muscles squeeze the muscles of the pelvic floor as if trying to stop the flow of urine. This muscle contraction should feel like a squeeze and lift internally. The glutes, thighs, and abdomen should not be contracted if doing these properly. Practice engaging these muscles three times a day. Each set should consist of 10 contractions and work towards holding each contraction for 10 seconds. Be sure to take a 10-15 second break between contractions. These exercises can be done while lying down, sitting, or walking. This technique is only used to help identify the proper muscles; do not try to stop the flow of urine on a regular basis because this can lead to urinary retention and dysfunctional urination.
