World’s Longest Ga me a Success on and off the Ice

Mundare resident Jason Kowal was one of many volunteers who participated in the World’s Longest Hockey Game that was held between February 4 and 15.

The game was one of the most challenging to date as temperatures plummeted to minus 35 degrees Celsius and wind chills dipping to minus 50 at times.

Kowal said he had heard about other games over the years at Saikers Acres near Sherwood Park and had taken his family out to support the fundraising event which supports cancer research in Alberta.

He explained, “A couple years ago I helped to umpire a couple shifts in the baseball/summer version of the game. This year I decided to get a bit more involved.

It didn’t take long for Kowal to sign up to referee for a few shifts and he had the pleasure of runninginto other volunteers he knew personally. “Each shift I ran into (at a safe distance of course) people that I know from the Mundare and Vegreville area that have stepped up to help support this great cause.”

He went on to say, “Getting out there for a few hours at a time is nothing compared to what the players are experiencing, or what some cancer survivors have

gone through. I commend everybody that has been involved and thank all those that have been able to donate to the game.
