The romance of the written word Rosanne Fortier Did you ever want to have a chance to meet a romance writer, listen to readings by them and have their view on life inspire you? Adventure Romance writer, Sarah Kades will give you that opportunity, as well as, a chance to treat the love of your life to a Valentine’s Wine and Cheese at Vegreville Centennial Library. Sarah Kades’ biography notes that she loves writing stories that inspire, entertain, and give people hope in the
magic and power of love, each one of us and the natural world. Every person has a beginning and Sarah shared hers. “I was born and raised in the United States and grew up in a large family of modest means, and none fancied new landscapes and horizons like I did. That was okay. Looking back, it was amazing how everything fell into place. I’m floored what an incredible journey life is and how opportunities present themselves to us. Never underestimate the power of your dreams and goals,” Sarah explained. Her residences included many places, and she was always willing to take on a new adventure. “When I went to university, I had the opportunity to study in Scotland and I jumped at the chance. I had already had a couple of trips within the U.S. with friends, and Europe sounded like another fantas-
tic experience. A whole other continent to make friends on, smell air I’d never smelled before, hike trails I had never stepped foot on, and witness art and culture I had only seen in books and on television.” Sarah described how she met her husband. “After I returned from my semester abroad, I found myself at an archaeological field school in Manitoba and that is where I met my husband. We married nearly a year and a half later and I immigrated to Canada. My husband is from Ontario and we just kept moving west every year with each new archaeology and university adventure. We now call Calgary home,” she went on to say. She knew she wanted to be a writer and what she believed influenced this decision and prompted her to write romance books, Sarah replied, “Writing was never consciously on my to-do list,
but I have looked back in old journals and noticed I’ve been mentioning it for years. It’s crazy how we ignore ourselves for so long. I was prompted to give it a try when a writer friend shared a series idea she had for a collaboration and encouraged me to make a submission. It was accepted in the series and published with Amira Press in 2009.” “I write romance for a few reasons: I enjoy them, they are incredibly fun to write, and no one can explain why we fall for who we do. The chemistry is either there or it is not. Other types of love are quite reasonable and explainable - the plutonic love of family, good friends, that sort of thing. Romantic love is different. It is powerful, inexplicable, and real. And it is so much fun writing characters going through it. There is also the added bonus of happy endings in romance novels. That works for me.”
Writing has made her life meaningful also. Sarah described this, “I write because it makes me happy. It is such a neat experience to have a story pop into your head and develop. The craft of writing is fascinating, too. It is like brush strokes, or chords, but with words. Not only do you put the words in the pattern to tell the story, but you choose the perfect words to tell that story. Good stories have depth, layers to enjoy, like a harmony. It is a fun thing to create.” Sarah also enjoys reading and her taste is varied. “I love both fiction and nonfiction, and have quite a few favorites. The written word, like all forms of art, has the ability to move people, take them to a place they couldn’t or wouldn’t get on their own. Good books take our hand and lead us on an incredible journey. When we are lucky, they help us on our journey.” She makes sure to find time
to write. “My scheduling changed when I made writing a priority. Suddenly I found pockets of time to utilize for writing or plotting or character building. Five minutes here, fifteen minutes there, these snippets of time add up so when you sit down for an hour (or more), your mind is already wrapped around the story and characters.” Sarah explained. Sarah chose her settings for her romance novels according to her passion in life. “I love the natural world and spend a lot of time outside. There are so many amazing horizons to share with people. Writing is a way I can do that,” Sarah said. Sarah was generous with her advice for people with families wanting to find time to write; “Alberta has a strong writing community. Get active. Hang out with people on the same journey, learning See Story............................ Page 3

the same ropes, or those who are already there and can teach you. It is fun. I joined the Alberta Romance Writers Association (ARWA) critique group, the Calgary chapter of the Romance Writers of America (CaRWA) and am active with the When Words Collide conference. All of these are extraordinary resources and you don’t have to live in Calgary to participate. Also, keep reading, read some more, then read even more. Excellent writers are excellent readers,” Sarah stated. “As far as finding time to write, it is sometimes a challenge. I have a day job, a second business, a writing career, a family, and a strong desire to stay sane, happy and healthy. However, it is amazing where we can carve out time when we set our mind to it. There is a learning curve to organizing a writing career. Give yourself the time

Sarah explained if she selfpublished her work. “I do now. It is a viable, respected option. And there is freedom with indie publishing that resonates strongly with me. There is a lot to learn, but it is possible, exciting and incredibly satisfying. The publishing world is a huge transition and indie publishing is part of it,” she said. Her final comment was she

Vegreville 4H Multi Club update Dylan Vadnais Submitted We have had an exciting year so far in our 4H club. We’ve learned how to make motions, elect an executive, and how to form committees. We chose many different projects from small animals, to crafts, horses and small engines that we will work on throughout the year until achievement day when we will present what we have done. The club went glow bowling for Halloween and had a great time. We enjoyed snacks, costumes and some crazy bowling techniques! November was 4H month and it was a busy one as we saw some members travel to Bonnyville and participate in Fall Fling with over 100 other 4H-ers!
We also played volleyball in Vermillion against other 4H clubs, and travelled to Edmonton to attend the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR)! There we watched lots of exciting Rodeo events. My favourite was the miniature pony catching! In December, we enjoyed a public speaking workshop then shortly after we had a wonderful gift exchange and Christmas party with lots of goodies! In the New Year we have tons more exciting things planned. We chose dates for our club Public Speaking event (Feb. 10th at the Ag. Society Bldg.), Achievement Day (May 26th ) and movie night! We’ll also carry on working on our projects and having fun because 4H is a great place to be!
Willingdon 4-H multi club update Colten Lutzak Submitted New Years greetings to all, from the Willingdon 4-H multi club! We had a very busy month in December, and the New Year has begun with lots on the agenda too! The club helped out
with the Willingdon Ag Society’s annual Santa Days in early December. There were crafts to make, cookies to decorate, rides were given on the local fire truck, and of course no Santa Days See Story.........................................Page 12

Al Thomas The Alchemist This is not a happy column. It is one that I hope I am completely wrong, but the facts are screaming. The public will not hear them from the major media. The media including radio, TV and newspapers is afraid to
speak. The owners of these journals realize they will be subject to the wrath of Washington if they do. Anyone that can do 2 + 2 = 4 should be able to see the consequences of the central government actions. Don’t listen to their words. See what they do.

and call it money. The more they print the less purchasing power it has. Here is the kicker. When the Fed doesn’t have enough assets to back the paper dollars they issue Treasury Bills (government bonds) and sell them to foreign countries like China and others. It is getting to the point where foreigners don’t want to buy them. BUT, big BUT, we still have to pay the interest on all those bonds that have been issued. It is very obvious that unless the central government stops spending more than they take in the Fed is not going to be able to pay its obligations. And who is the one responsible for those bonds – right! The taxpayers. Us. You and me. That, in simple terms, is the FISCAL CLIFF. Al Thomas’ new book, “If It Doesn’t Go Up, Don’t Buy It!”, 3rd edition, has helped thousands of people make money and keep their profits with his simple 2-stepmethod. The method made 10% during2008. Carol Rudyk demonstrates the positive power of faith Rosanne Fortier Carol Rudyk’s eyes radiate warmth and joy. While in her presence, a person can’t help but discover peace and fellowship. This is all despite
the fact that her path in life had roadblocks and obstacles. Carol was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. “My family and community were tight
knit. My mom and dad were good people that raised us to know the Lord and be part of a church family. My father was a milkman that was well known in the community. I remember my sister and I enjoyed each other’s company and we always liked to laugh. Even today, when we get together we find things to laugh about. Laughter is the best medicine. All and all, I had a really good childhood with good friends who lived down the street. We were
close to school and there was a baseball field nearby. On top of this, we had horses, a trapeze and used to climb ladders. We didn’t have a television so we learned to keep active and use our imaginations. Everyone knew and cared about each other. My family was poor, so we enjoyed parcels of secondhand clothing from church friends, while they gave us this; we had no feeling of embarrassment. Despite our low income, there was plenty of
food in the house too.” Her childhood without great material means taught Carol about what is really important in life. “From being poor, I understood what ‘need’ was and went on to work with the less fortunate. Compassion is a gift from God that we learn as we grow up,” Carol noted. Her adolescence and teenage years were pleasant also. “I liked sports and played basketball and badminton. At school, I was a cheerleader and had a lot of friends, which I still cherish. We get together on a yearly basis at least or more if we can. Our friendship is composed of supporting each other and just having a great time together. Even now, it seems when we laugh that it’s just like our problems aren’t there anymore,” Carol said. When asked about her marriage and family, Carol went on to say, “My husband and I have been married for 44 years on June 28th of this year. I credit our long relationship to taking the time to work at it, trusting and forgiving each other. Love is a gift that a person needs to give and receive. From this
union, we had five children, the oldest four are boys and the youngest was a girl. We’re very proud of all of our children because they turned out well and represent who we are by modeling our integrity.” There were hard times with Carol’s family life also. “I had a very difficult pregnancy with our fifth child. We had four boys and when I became pregnant again, I had a kidney disease. Hence, the medical staff told me that an abnormal mother produces an abnormal baby. So, they gave me a decision if I should carry the baby and I just told them that I wouldn’t hear of an abortion. God gave us this baby and he is bigger than you think. At this time, I had to pray and really believe in a miracle. The Baptist church I was attending prayed too.” Carol explained. “I was in bed for a lot of the pregnancy and in the hospital for three months. There were four other children who needed care. My youngest was only two years old and at the time, I was a very busy Mom. But we had the See Story.......................... Page 18

Emergency Ser vices Manager and Fire Chief Jerrold Lemko was grateful for the gift, saying it would
assist the department in raising awareness of emer-

Coordinator Captain Phil Rowe and Emergency Services Assistant Manager Chris Jardine accepted the banner from News Advertiser Genera l Manager Arthur Beaudette. (Michael Simpson/Photo)

would have been complete without a visit from Santa! Next was the club Christmas party, held at the Vegreville bowling alley. Everyone who attended had a blast... and not hard to see why! The afternoon was spent glow bowling, playing bowling Christmas bingo, and it all was topped off with a pizza supper and gift exchange. Right after Christmas the club gathered together at the Willingdon Lodge to sing carols to the residents there. The afternoon event finished off with a short time to have snacks and a visit with the seniors! The New Year began for the 4-H members having a full day of curling in Two Hills, with many of the districts’ 4-H clubs in attendance. We finished the day off with curling prizes/ awards being presented and a hot dog supper provided by our multi-club and parent volunteers. Coming up for our club are some MORE exciting events! We are all getting excited about and looking forward to our annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper on February 12th from 5-7 pm in the Willingdon Rec Center. This

The Family of Betty Jean McPherson Submitted The family of the late Betty Jean McPherson would like to sincerely thank the community of Vegreville for supporting the Betty Jean Children’s Playground situated near the ball park. The location is particularly important to commemorate the joy Betty experienced while watching her son Jon play ball. It has been over five years since Betty died and we continue to learn about the positive impact Betty had on the lives of others. A very special thank you is extended to Dwayne Gawryliuk, whose tremendous efforts transformed his idea into a meaningful memorial and attraction
for the community. Even the huge stone at the playground held special significance to Betty. The fundraising efforts to complete his project are greatly appreciated. Thank you to Betty’s numerous friends who continue to share their special memories with us. We appreciate the tremendous support the Vegreville community provided when Betty experienced health issues and following her death when her children, Jaclyn and Jonathan, needed support. A sincere thank you is extended to all. We feel blessed to know that other people enjoyed Betty and continue to remember her. Extraordinary people created a wonderful legacy and for that we are truly grateful and deeply honoured.

MEMORIAM
DANYLUK, Mary and Metro S. In loving memories of our Dear Mother, Baba, & Baba Baba (Great grandmother), who passed away January 24th, 2003 and our Dear Father, Moshul, (great-grandfather) Moshul Moshul, who passed away August 15th, 1997. In a quiet graveyard Where the gentle breezes blow Lies our special ones we love so dearly. Flowers we place with care. But no one knows the heartaches As we turn and leave you both there. May the winds of love blow gently And whispers so you both can hear That we all love and miss you. It broke our hearts to lose you both But you never went alone. That day “God” called you home. “God’s” garden must be beautiful and all the rest. “He” only takes the very best. Our precious Parents, Grandparents & Great-grandparents your great & wonderful caring, loving smiles, with that kind & gentle twinkles in your eyes is sadly missed, Forever remembered by your loving daughters, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

EVANS, John A. Feb 5, 1946 – Jan 23, 2013 This year we have lost a great friend, John A. Evans. John passed away at the age of 66 years at Lamont Health Care Center from a lengthy battle with cancer. He will be sadly missed by those who knew him. God looked around His garden And He found an empty place. He looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you, And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb. So He closed your weary eyelids, And whispered “ Please be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. John you will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Love, Gynelle, Nick, Kash, Syris and many friends. HILL, Lily Lily Hill of Willingdon, Alberta peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013. Take time to remember things that Lily forgot so many years ago, her bountiful gardens, her flowers, cooking for friends and family, and her various other labors of love. Carol Rudyk demonstrates the positive power of faith continued CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8
support of our family to help us along. My husband’s parents lived in the same community, so they would take care of the children who weren’t in school until my husband came home from work. Then my Mom who lived 70 miles away came over on her days off and she baked and looked after the household.” She learned from this experience that God is famous for seeing us through. “Later, my daughter was born and she was perfect. I was able to also go on with my routine after she was born. But I’ll never forget that God performs miracles in our life. We would have loved her no matter what because every child is a gift from God. But still
today, I remember that if I had agreed to do what the medical staff suggested, I wouldn’t be blessed with such a wonderful daughter today. She graduated as a teacher with high distinction. God was showing me that he could do a lot more than I expected him to,” Carol stressed. Carol is a registered nurse and worked at this for 20 years. When asked why she pursued this career, she explained, “When I was nine years old, my grandmother used to live with us. She influenced this choice because one day I was washing her feet. At this time, she said that I would be a good nurse and I always had that in my heart. As well, my older sister was a nurse. So, I wanted

to help people. It was the compassion that was given to me that assisted me with this decision.” She has fond memories of the time she spent in training. “In those days, it was a profession that you didn’t have to have money to take the course. The years I spent in nursing residence are probably the best years of my life. After 45 years, I still am good friends and communicate with these people.” Carol chuckled while she added, “When you live with 21 people in a nursing residence, you receive good preparation for living with someone in marriage.” After spending years in the profession, Carol was forced to choose whether to continue work. “On Christmas Eve on 1989, I fell on the doorstep in the hospital, broke my leg in two places, tore a ligament and dislocated it. Still, I went back to work on and off until I finally realized that I couldn’t be on my feet eight hours a day. Hence, I gave up a profession that I really loved.” “After retiring from nursing, I worked for Lifeline, putting in lifeline units for seniors. I did this for ten years and enjoyed it because it gave me a chance to communicate with the people in their homes while I was setting up the equipment,” Carol said. “Later, I took on the role of Crisis Intervention Coordinator and did this for six years where I was a Helpline Coordinator. This is a phone line where people
who are experiencing too much stress or were in emergencies could call and obtain help.” When asked how she did this she told me, “At this time, I carried a phone 24/7 on me. It wasn’t hard for me because I had the gift of showing compassion and comfort to others. The most rewarding part was I knew that what I did mattered. It was fulfilling for my inner woman. In the process, I learned a lot about people and that most just need to be encouraged and listened to.” A serious illness fell on her at this time also. “I was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 and I continued to work with the Crisis Association until November 2011 because I believed it is good to continue doing what you do. Then I left because I was starting radiation therapy and had to go in everyday for this treatment,” Carol said. During this time, she took up Clinical Pastoral Education also. “I did this course because the hospital didn’t have a pastoral care person. I felt that was a missing link in hospital care because people who are sick who receive prayer recover a lot better. This has been proven medically also. But part of the communication is not to put what you believe unto others. Sometimes, it is just being there and having someone to talk to that helps a person,” Carol said. This led to another setback for Carol. “Two weeks before I graduated from the course, I was diagnosed

with Lymphoma – a cancer of the immune system. Yes, I was disappointed to not be able to continue this type of work. The reason is I had to be careful because when you’re on chemo treatment, radiation and I had surgery twice in my throat, a person can’t expose themselves to infections.” Carol is honest about her feelings when she first learned about her cancer. “When people get diagnosed with cancer, there is a time when a person feels it is a death sentence. But the fear of the disease is one of the biggest killers. Once you get past this, you are able to fight it. This didn’t take me long to get over because I already felt that with people in the hospital by learning how to support people in the
medical ward. Also, when I did pastoral care, I worked with people who had terminal illnesses.” Carol’s voice was laced with laughter when she added, “This experience was hope served on a tray.” Her faith pulled her through too. “I studied healing all my life in the bible and I learned that God still heals today. There was just a hunger in me to see healing. It’s part of who I am. I believe that we’ll see healing in the future. I’m seeing it in myself. What better place to discover it than over there?” “I went to California to a conference on healing and while over there, I learned that God is alive, well and always in a good mood. All we need to do is to pray, ask
News Advertiser Page 19
others to pray for us, and God will do the rest. That’s my hope and faith,” Carol said. “Cancer changed my character in the sense that I have so much more faith in miracles. At the conference, people had back injuries and were able to bend after being healed over there. Others experienced traumas. God did healing that no one could deny.” “Difficult times are when our character is built. We learn how people feel when they’re sick, how they react to bad news. I discovered that compassion isn’t taught, but a part of a person’s character instead,” Carol noted. “My family and friends are very supportive.” BCuz, is a group composed of her four granddaughters and Carol said that hearing them sing heals her better than any chemo treatment could. She uses natural methods to fight cancer also. “I contacted an herbalist and he’s given me natural remedies to use. There are other ones I discovered such as not dying my hair and cutting out chemicals in my home,” she explained. In her free time, she relaxes and has fun by reading, studying healing, being involved in
her church, scrap booking and venturing out on the occasional vacation. Carol believes in volunteer work. “I volunteered with the Sisters of Charity where I’m an associate member with them. It was through them that I did a cookbook called, Healing Touch, in the honor of their 100th anniversary of the hospital and we sold 1,100 copies. This brought in $13,000, which was donated to the sisters and the proceeds went toward a water well in Africa. There was $5,000 left over to do another one. So, it was a worthwhile venture. As well, some of the work I did for the Crisis Association was volunteer work.” Carol admitted that having cancer was a disappointment but she doesn’t believe her life is over. “I still have nursing, crisis intervention, clinical pastoral education in my blood. There is a time when I will be able to work again.” Her final advice is “don’t dwell on negativity. This is toxic to your system, especially when you have cancer.”
