Michael Simpson Staff Writer VCHS music teacher Bill Simpson’s pupils were a crowd pleaser at their yearend Christmas concert on December 20 with a combination of performances from regular and jazz band groups. The grade 7 band held their own with traditional numbers such as When the Saints Come Marching in and Jingle

Bells while the grade 8/9 band f leshed things out with catchy tunes such as Secret Agent Man and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Extra talent hiding in the wings came out to shine in the form of a vocal solo from Claudia Lillies and some expert solo work from Jillian Rogers on the flute, Zane Kordich on tenor sax See Story............................ Alysha Melenka and Mikayla Zacharuk presented Joanne Veldkamp, Chair of the Vegreville Christmas Bureau, with a cash donation. (Photo Submitted) On November 30th, the students at A.L. Horton participated in a “Day of Hunger. This project was the initiative of two students, Alysha and Mikayla, who wanted everyone to understand hunger.

Using a virtual backup band for certain arrangements added to the dynamic sound of the performances at times, while with other pieces such as The Tempest, the emotional range was captured entirely by the students.

Smile of the

WEEK

Julian calendar followers preserve Christmas traditions Rosanne Fortier “Christmas is too commercialized,” is a comment that people frequently mutter. The season isn’t always celebrated this way. Ukrainians, who go by the Julian calendar, hold Christmas festivities on January 7th in a profound and religious matter. There are some other Eastern Orthodox national churches which do this too, which include the Greek, Syrian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Byelorussian and several Ukrainian families who follow the Gregorian calendar who also continue to hold the traditions used for Ukrainian Christmas. The primary tradition is the evening meal, which has twelve Lenten dishes that represent the twelve Apostles. These dishes are usually vegetarian in order to honor the animals that were in the stable with Jesus. Kutya is the first food that is prepared, which usually consist of wheat with crushed poppy seeds, honey, or any ingredients that will make it tasty. Other dishes include fish, nuts, and dried fruits. Every family and person celebrates this occasion differently. After the meal, families sing Christmas carols. In the morning, they attend church and in the after-

noon, some participate in Christmas caroling. At this time, they donate to charities or try to help anyone in need. Greg Kurulok, a Councilor for the Town of Vegreville, explained about how his family celebrates Ukrainian Christmas. “Christmas Eve is January 6, when we have a special Christmas meal that we wait till the first star to eat and then we start supper, which consists of meatless dishes. These are kutya (a poppy seed wheat dish served as an appetizer or dessert), kolach (braided bread with three components, where the concept is that each one represents the Holy Trinity) and there is a lit candle in the centre of this bread, meatless borscht, stuffed salmon or fried fillets (in the prairies we usually have white fish or fresh water fish), pickled herrings, meatless hobubtsi, varenyky (boiled potatoes, sauerkraut or prunes), sauerkraut and peas, board beans or mashed beans, pidpenty (mushrooms with gravy), compote (dried fruit that you cook up), pampushky, makiwnyk (buns with poppy seeds or prunes),” Kurulok noted. “There are no presents exchanged at this time because Ukrainian Christmas is more of a religious holiday.”

EMPLOYMENT / UPCOMING

Harper’s highlights for 2012 Government of Canada Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement highlighting some of the government’s significant accomplishments in 2012: “Throughout 2012, our Government continued to generate results for Canadians both at home and abroad. “First and foremost, we continued to successfully navigate the turbulent global economy in 2012, emerging with some of the strongest job growth numbers among G-7 countries. This was accomplished while reducing the country’s deficit and creating a leaner, more efficient public service. “The international community has taken note of our success this year: Forbes magazine has ranked Canada as number one in its annual review of the best countries for business; for the fifth year in a row, the World Economic Forum has rated Canada’s banking system as the world’s soundest; and both the IMF and OECD expect Canada to be among the strongest growing economies in the G-7 next year. “In 2012 we continued to aggressively pursue trade and investment agreements that will benefit Canadian businesses and families. Canada signif icantly increased its engagement in Asia, joining the TransPacific Partnership trade negotiations; becoming an observer to the Pacific Alliance; concluded foreign investment promotion and protection agreements (FIPA) with China, Senegal and Tanzania; concluding negotiations for the Administrative Arrangement between Canada and India that will allow the implementation of the Nuclear Cooperation Agreement (NCA); launching free trade negotiations with Japan; announcing exploratory free trade talks with Thailand; and expanding the Canada-China Air Transport Agreement. “We also made solid progress on modernizing Canada’s immigration system to make it more proactive, targeted, fast and efficient in a way that will sustain Canada’s economic growth and deliver prosperity for the future. “Our Government also began implementing a plan for Responsible Resource Development that will streamline the review process for major economic projects. This is expected to facilitate more than 600 projects worth as much as $650 billion over the next

10 years. “Additionally, we made significant progress on putting in place infrastructure and other measures across the country, laying the foundation for future growth and prosperity. This includes: supporting projects at Lower Churchill Falls that will generate enormous benefits for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia; signing an agreement for the construction of the new Detroit River International Crossing; rolling out the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, which will help improve existing community infrastructure across the country; and making real and substantive progress on the Beyond the Border Action Plan and on Regulatory Cooperation with the United States. “We also continued to strengthen our relationship with First Nations, including through commitments made at the historic CrownFirst Nations Gathering; announcing support for First Nation Education to improve school infrastructure and address literacy; and introducing legislation to protect drinking water in First Nation communities. “On the security front, we have taken numerous steps at home to target crime and terrorism and to provide greater support and protection for victims of crime, including new income support for parents of murdered or missing children. Internationally, we continued to work with the United States to enhance border security, and we established a new initiative to support police training and border security in the Americas. With respect to counterterrorism, we witnessed the adoption of Canada’s first Counter-Terrorism Strategy and committed to renewing Canada’s Global Partnership Program to reduce the threat from weapons of See Story.......................... Rosanne Fortier Why do angel ornaments deck the hall at Alclub Bingo Hall on December 19? Christmas décor tablecloths, napkins and candle-lit tables with red, green and white jellybean centerpieces adorned the hall. Conversations filled the air while sparkling, multi-colored lights flickered, adding to the cheer. In the entrance, a Christmas stocking hung that read “I’ve been very, very good,” which described the participants at this Christmas party and was meant to acknowledge via certificates the valuable contributions from all the volunteers that helped organized fundraisers, etc, throughout the year. What does Vegreville Transportation Services Society do? “We supply affordable transportation for seniors and people with special needs by having a voucher system to help pay for half of the taxi fare or we have a handivan that provides subsidized transportation for people who have to go to Edmonton. The only income we have to do this is through grants and fundraisers, so we’re seeking volunteers,” Dwayne Hlady, President and Chairman for VTSS Board explained. “This party is one good way to let volunteers know they’re appreciated because if I ask any of them for help, they are available and willing to do this service.” There were two long standing volunteers present at the party. mass destruction and to combat nuclear terrorism. “The Government of Canada also promoted Canadian unity, heritage and sovereignty by: supporting our Olympic and Paralympic athletes, who won a total of 49 medals at the London Games; commemorating The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by welcoming The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and awarding deserving Canadians with Diamond Jubilee medals; and honouring the many battalions and First Nations groups who fought in the War of 1812, a pivotal event in Canada’s history. We also made progress on ensuring that the Royal

Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard have the equipment they need to be a capable and flexible force for good with the awarding of shipbuilding contracts to both Vancouver Shipyards Co. and Irving Shipbuilding Inc., which will also generate economic benefits on both coasts. “In the coming year, we will work hard to achieve progress on priority issues for Canadians. needed for emergencies. Not only this she is involved in, her life has been full of service. “I’m an Honoured Royal Lady of the Royal Purple and have been for 50 years. I also volunteered for the Girl Guides of Canada.” When questioned what made her get involved with VTSS, Preuss replied, “I was asked by the person in charge of VTSS at the time, Val Bogen, since I had worked previously with the adult day-support program at the long term care centre and the big handy van bus, which is still ongoing.” “When I retired, I became the alternative driver, Elsie Kisilevich drives one week and I do the other week. We became very compatible because she has been very good at taking over when I go on holidays,” Preuss explained. “Doing this is a busy commitment that fills a void in my life. It’s very rewarding, especially helping citizens in wheelchairs. I jungle appointments and accommodate as many clients as possible.” “I feel appreciated by this organization, clients and the community,” Preuss added. Helen Litwin, Secretary/ Treasurer included her comments also. “I volunteered for VTSS since it started in 2001. VTSS was initiated by Laurie Evans, who worked for FCSS at that time. FCSS recruited me to see if anyone was interested in helping people obtain transportation and to get involved with this organization. Community

members pushed to have this service because they were people who believed this service would help a lot of citizens.” “It was something that was natural for me to do because I worked with adults with developmental delays and I

HNYDYK, Ron In loving memory of Ron Hnydyk Sept. 17, 1938 - Jan. 7, 2011 Missed dearly. Ron will always have a special place in our hearts. Sister in-law Alice Sydora and Family. HNYDUK, Ron In Memory Of Ron Hnydyk Sept. 17, 1938 - January 7, 2011 We think of you often and make no outward show, But what it means to lose you, no one will ever know. You wished no one farewell, not even said good-bye, You were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why. You are not forgotten nor will you ever be, As long as life and memories last, We will remember thee. To some you may be forgotten, to others a part of the past, But to us who loved you dearly, your memories will always last. Nothing can be more beautiful than the memories we have of you. To us, you were someone special, God must have thought so too! If tears could build a staircase and memories a lane, We would walk all the way to Heaven, and bring you back again.
