Work commenced on Tuesday morning of this week demolishing the building owned by Third Bros. which was practically destroyed by fire early in May. The old building will be completely erased from the scene to be succeeded by a new and larger one of standard fireproof construction. Elmer Wilson has the contract for removing the old building and constructing the new one.
Crops and gardens, around Shandro, look exceptionally cheerful after the drenching rainfall last week.
Mr. Hoadley has relinquished the portfolio of agriculture in the provincial cabinet and taken over that of the telephone department. He is still the minister of health, also.

Seeding is pretty well done in the Vegreville – Two Hills area and recent rain has improved the outlook for this year’s crops. “We’re definitely in better shape, moisture-wise, than last year,” said Kent MacDonald with Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development’s Vegreville office.
About 110 Grade 3 to 6 students at St. Martin’s School raised over $9,100, said Vice Principal Harold Mori. They gathered pledges and participated in the annual Jump Rope for Heart event for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta and NWT.
Summer of Discontent
Arthur Beaudette
News Advertiser – Opinion
Ahhh… Summer. While it’s starting to feel like it, we are not officially there yet. However, all signs are pointing to our very short, and for some, favourite season. Even hockey fans could be enjoying and possibly celebrating in summer if the NHL playoffs go at least 6 more games. We’ve already had storms and I swatted my first mosquito of the season just before typing this. Quite often we see rising fuel prices, but this year we may have a reprieve from that and of course there are also air conditioner sales. If you haven’t seen the news, it’s hot (as hell?) in New Delhi which recently reached a record of 52.9 C. Yes, Five Two point Nine Celsius. That’s not a typo.
Another sign of summer is also starting. No… not picnics at the egg park, fencing with angry geese or farmer’s markets. Unfortunately, it’s something else and not something you will ever see in January when it’s -40 C. Unions all over are in the midst of grumbling, negotiating or actively striking. After all, who doesn’t like some time off in the summer? You can enjoy the park in the middle of the week, go to your favourite hot spot without fighting the working stiffs who only have time on the weekend, and… no snow!!
A few weeks ago due to the fact that many of our readers rely on Canada Post to get the News Advertiser (that means we are a big customer), we were given notice that negotiations were under way with the Union representing Canada Post workers. They stated things were going well, BUT… if that changed, we would have three months’ notice before there were any disruptions.
Just weeks ago, more than 9,000 Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) union members voted in favour of a strike mandate, with possible strike action starting as early as June. It is estimated that $2.5 billion of goods cross the boarder daily and any disruptions would impact the economy significantly. Of course those in southern Ontario, Quebec and BC will be crying the loudest should a strike take place. After all, this would impact cross border day and weekend trips. Mediation started June 3.
Out in Toronto, the union representing thousands of Toronto Transit Commission (TCC) workers announce Friday that people should prepare for a “total disruption of transit service across the City of Toronto.” Workers have even conducted “practice pickets” in advance of the June 7th deadline.
Head out west and you will find Vancouver-based Taseko Mines Limited shutting down its Gibraltar copper mine in central British Columbia. The company issued a press release Saturday stating negotiations ended Friday with no deal. The Union represents 550 workers at the second largest open-pit copper mine in Canada. As of this writing, the mine is shut down with only essential staff remaining to maintain critical operations.
Finally, the union representing federal workers has vowed a “summer of discontent” over a new mandate to keep them in the office three days a week. It was announced in May that public servants in the core public administration would be required to spend at least THREE days in the office starting in September.
The Vegreville Composite Cougars Bantam Volleyball Team captured Gold in an invitational volleyball tournament held in Vermilion. The Cougars went through the tournament losing only one game. They defeated a Grand Prairie team in the finals to take first place. Team members were Amber Tuck, Ashley Melnyk, Karla Dobush, Mary-Ann Dunbar, Jennifer Byers, Kelly Ziegler, Holly Hudema, and Cheryl Tillapaugh. Coaching the team is Alex Melnyk.
Thirty-two members of the Vegreville 4-H Beef Club showed 28 market steers, 14 heifers, and 5 cow-calf pairs during their Achievement Day.
Vegreville Co-op director Bonnie Litwin presented a $100 cheque last week to Carolyn Mulholland and her son Brett for the Toy Lending Library. The money was donated by Federated Co-operatives to each director who attended their annual meeting, to be given to the charity of the director’s choice in the local community.

The union has said it would launch legal challenges and encouraged public sector workers to file “tens of thousands” of grievances over the new mandate. Just what we need. More paperwork to add to the pile. Just imagine what would happen in farmers and ranchers around the world took a few summers off. I suspect there would be a lot of hungry federal workers on the picket lines. Tell me what you think. Email me at abletters@newsadvertiser.com

Olga Osinchuk’s Sense of Humour Shines for 100 Years
Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent
Onine Retirement Auction for Linda’s
Olga is Vegreville’s new Centenarian as she reached this rank on May 14. “I grew up on a farm eight miles south of Mundare where I was the oldest kid of four. Our parents were good to us. There was a 15-year difference between me and my youngest sister. I was like a young mother to her.
My earliest memory is when my parents gave me a birthday party when I was eight when all the neighbours’ children came. We were poor as it was 1932. I have no idea where my father got the money to do this, he must have saved a lot. I think we had a beautiful cake and a case of pop. This was the first time I drank pop.”
When asked how school was, Olga admitted that she liked school and her favorite subject was Math. School was three miles away, and she could ride a horse there, as long as, her father didn’t need to use it in the field. “I had quite a few friends at school but left after I fin-
ished Grade Eight.
After she finished school, she helped her father on the farm. “I walked behind the harrow with four horses most of the day. I was expected to assist with some of the chores on the farm. But was still allowed to go and have fun.”
When questioned about how she met her husband. “My parents took me on a holiday to the Hot Springs in Radium, British Columbia. My husband worked for his sister and brother-in-law North of Mundare, and some locals had hired him to drive them to the Hot Springs in Radium. I was from South of Mundare, but we met for the first time that day when he bought me an ice cream cone. After this holiday, we met up in town and he took me on a date. We started seeing each other more often.
After we were married, my husband and I owned this café with his brother-inlaw and sister. But times were still tough

then and so many things were rationed. It wasn’t a great time to own a café for this reason, we couldn’t even buy sweets or candies to sell there. If someone gave you a package of gum, you wanted to save it. After one year, we sold the farm and started farming. My husband was good to me. We had a mixed farm and both worked hard. We had six children. Parenting was good for us.
I lived long because I worked hard and found humour in every situation. Then I made time for fun. I belonged to Vegreville Garden Club for 35 years
and I bowled. I traveled to Northwest Territories, Kelowna BC, Vancouver BC, Australia, and Fiji. I even put my foot in the water in Newfoundland. From all this traveling, I discovered that every place was educational but I wouldn’t want to live at any of these places. I was born on the farm. I am a country girl and a gardener at heart. My advice is to enjoy life; take care of yourself and don’t work too hard. I love my family and they all turned out well.
Today, I feel well except for some pain from having arthritis.”

Senior Citizens Week
Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent
Homestead Senior Citizen’s Lodge makes sure to keep their residents entertained.
Activity Coordinators are Carmen Bruce and Harmony Myshak. Bruce said, “We both find that the residents enjoy being active and socializing.
Some popular games are Bocce Ball, and card games like Russian Rummy, Uno, or Higher or Lower. They even enjoy the 9 am morning exercises. The residents understand that to keep moving, keeps you healthier.
We offer four different activities every day Monday to Friday. These activities include card games, questionand-answer games like “Name That Tune”, trivia or guessing games, word games like Hangman or Brainteasers, and more physical games like bean bag toss,
ladder ball, or bowling! We have card-making, painting, and colouring for the more creative residents. Residents love to come and help to arrange and decorate our dining room table centerpieces which rotate with the seasons. Some musicians come to entertain which is also a popular activity.”
When asked how this helps the people live a full life. “Our residents are happier and healthier when socializing and connecting with others so these activities offer them a chance to do that which is why we have such a variety of activities to suit all levels of interests and abilities. Some residents have smaller families or not much outside support, these activities offer that sense of family and bonding that they may otherwise not be able to have. We love our residents and wish them to be with us for as long as possible!”
Fun Times for Seniors
Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent
After people retire, they have plenty of time to participate in recreational activities.
When asked, Recreation Aide for Heritage House Kristen Gusnowski said, “A favourite activity of the residents at Heritage House would be the music entertainment. They love music and we get to enjoy different groups performing for us throughout the month. Our community is lucky to have many groups volunteer to share their talents with us. Music is such a special thing for people- it can calm
someone’s mind if they are anxious, remind them of wonderful memories from their past, as well as improve concentration. Another favourite of the residents are having children visit them. We have different times throughout the year when we have
students from one of the schools visit or have the dance groups come to perform for the residents. This interaction allows them to avoid social isolation. The residents get so much joy seeing the children. And of course, the residents love their Bingo!”

tage of them.
The con to being a senior is I have less energy now.”
There are pros and cons to being older in the world today. Seniors in Vegreville and Area expressed the good and bad parts.
Helen Christensen mentioned, “The best part about being my age is I have all the time to plan things for myself as I don’t have work commitments. I can choose to volunteer. I can make choices about what I do. I also have time to look after my health; time to exercise and eat well.
The things I don’t like are people have more health issues and have to spend more time going to doctor’s appointments.”
When asked how the world could improve the quality of life for seniors. “I think we need to have better senior care. Some senior facilities are privatized and people could be taken advantage of. I prefer that nursing homes are not privatized.”
Maurice Dubuc said, “It is good for me as a senior today. I see life in a new way as I am out of the hustle and bustle of the working rush world. I have more time for reflection, and to notice more things about the world and what is happening in it. There is more time to read, travel, and do things I never had time to do before.
My advice for other seniors is there are so many programs for older adults; people should take advan-
Janet Pritchard commented that she doesn’t like being unable to do things she used to and all the aches and pains, as well as, reading about friends that have passed away.
Jo Topechka expressed that seniors are happy they lived in the sixties and seventies because of the way the world is now.
Judy Shelley replied, “My pension is way less per month, and with higher prices, I have only a couple of dollars left at the end of the month even though my husband is still working. I am 67 and disabled so I can’t even do small jobs.
The thing I like most is that even though I am disabled, I am still alive.”
Karen LeMottee stated, “What I like is being a grandma! What I don’t like is the medical system and the government making us feel like we don’t matter because we are old.”
Donna Lecht admitted that she doesn’t like anything about old age. “Careful, it sneaks up before you know it.”
Brad Pichota answered, “The amount of money they expect us to live on compared to the amount we have paid in our lives are not comparable. They took our money. They used our money and now they expect us to starve after promising us that our money would be there when we needed it.”

ing us the skills we will need to do so. You taught us more than logarithms or mitosis or Shakespearean tragedy or supply side economics, you taught us how to observe the world critically, solve problems, be leaders, and work as a team, whether we realized it at the time or not. You have also been an incredible inspiration outside of the classroom, volunteering your lunch breaks, evenings and weekends to make sure we have access to extracurricular activities.
Your unwavering belief in us, even during our most questionable moments, has been nothing short of miraculous. Thanks to your relentless determination and seemingly infinite patience, we’ve learned that facing challenges head on is much more interesting than pretending they aren’t there at all.
Your dedication to this community and its youth have not gone unnoticed. You have been a model of kindness, empathy and endless patience. Characteristics that doubtlessly contributed to my (Florence) own aspirations to be a teacher. I(Florence) hope to one day be able to inspire and motivate my students in the same way.”
Teachers Anthony Bienvenue and Kendall Warawa responded, “Just as atoms bond to create molecules, your friendships

Have These Memories - CONTINUED from PAGE 13
watching us take our first steps, to watching us walk down this stage today, loved ones have been there. Today is one of the biggest milestones in our lives and to have the people who love and support us here to celebrate makes it so much more valuable.
Words cannot describe how grateful we are to have reached this point with constant support. This day marks more than the end of high school, but also the beginning of the rest of our lives. All those hours spent studying and stressing, will finally pay off when we turn our tassel.
We are so proud to be sharing this moment with all of you. We could not think of a better class to be graduating with. Each and every one of us is opening a new chapter in our lives today and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for all of you. We will see you on Monday and hopefully at the ten year reunion.”
Parent Michelle Gladys replied “It’s been an incredible journey to get here today, from the first days when you were a baby, to a tenacious toddler, to a carefree, curious child, to the transformative teenage years… and now onto an independent young adult. As a parent standing before you, I feel a mix of emotions – pride, joy, nostalgia, and excitement for what lies ahead.
Life will present you with challenges, but it’s important to remember that you are never alone. Your family, friends, & teachers believe in you and will be there to support you every step of the way. Don’t be afraid to lean on them, to seek advice, and to ask for help when you need it.
A few final words of advice cited by Brian Feroldi… invest early, network with successful people, never stop learning and think like an entrepreneur.”
Elk Island Public Schools Trustee Randy Footz, Deputy Mayor David Berry, and Associate Superintendent Ryan Marshall brought words of congratulations to the Grad class of 2024.

Good afternoon, guests, staff, and fellow graduates,
Standing here, in front of my peers, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and pride, not only for myself but also for my fellow classmates. Graduation marks an end and a beginning—a threshold between the familiar comforts of the past and the uncharted territories of the future.
As we begin writing a new chapter of our lives, it’s essential to acknowledge that nothing in life lasts forever. We must recognize that our time here is ending, but the memories we have created will remain for a lifetime. Our stay at Vegreville

Class Valedictorian - CONTINUED from PAGE 15 together, and created memories that will remain with us. The memory that impacted not just me but all of us as a whole was online school during the 8th and 9th grade. Although this was a time of great uncertainty and loneliness, I feel like I can speak on all the student’s behalf and say that we have all grown and developed from this experience.
Another fond memory of mine is my high school basketball career. I began playing in grade 8 and soon fell in love with the sport. Some of my fondest memories are going to tournaments and playing with my teammates and friends, whether we won or not. Playing as a team has taught me hard work, perseverance, and teamwork, some of the most valuable life skills, and I will always be grateful for this opportunity.
But today is not just about looking back but also about looking forward with hope, ambition, and determination. Some of us will pursue higher education through attending post-secondary or may find a career in their desired field, and others may choose to travel the world and experience what life has to offer. We are entering a world full of possibilities, challenges, and opportunities. It is up to us to seize them with courage and conviction, pursue our dreams relentlessly, and make a positive impact on the world around us.
As we move on with our lives, let us use these memories as a tool to shape the path of our future, guiding us to our dreams. Let us honor the friendships we have developed and strengthened through shared activities such as team sports and countless gatherings, the lessons we have learned, and the experiences that have molded us into the exceptional individuals we are today.

I want to thank my family for everything they have done to allow me to be here today. From day one, my parents instilled in me the values of reaching personal goals and finding self-fulfillment, allowing me to succeed in my school career. Their unwavering support and guidance has allowed me to achieve my full potential and fulfill my dreams of becoming an engineer. They have been a guiding force in my life and have helped me every step of the way in achieving my dreams from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
In closing, I would like to express my gratitude to each and every one of you, especially the teachers who have guided us through this experience, for your sacrifices, support, and unwavering belief in our potential. Though our time together may be fleeting, the memories we have created will last a lifetime.

Dolls for Everyone
Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent
People experience joy when they relive a pleasant childhood memory. This opportunity was presented when attendees shared their love of dolls while finding a unique childhood treasure at Doll Quest and Toy Treasures Doll and Toy Show and Sale at Vegreville Inn and Suites on May 25.
Vendors for Nana’s Reborn Nursery Catharine Braun and Leona Wolfe were from High Level. When asked what got them into collecting and creating reborn dolls. Catharine answered, “I’ve loved dolls since I was a little girl. I found that I like to make reborn dolls because I received a doll from my dad when I was four years old and I needed to get it fixed. I found a reborn artist and wanted her to fix it but she wouldn’t because it was an old doll.” It can take up to 40 hours to bring a doll back its original state or better. Leona said she got into creating these dolls because she also always loved dolls.
“I liked reborns so my husband told me that I should make one.”
Marilyn labrecque was selling dolls with her granddaughters Cadence Prima and Violet Ransom. “The dolls came from my mom who had a toy museum in Hanna. Then she retired to a lodge and I got the dolls. We used to play with them but my mother had over 5,000 dolls so we had to sell some of them. We enjoyed

Coordinator Virginia Workman explained, “It was the best show ever! We had some new vendors, Catharine Tina Braun, reborn artist and the Miniature Enthusiasts of Edmonton, and Charlea McLean with Barbie’s and doll clothing. There were toys, hot wheels, Marvel super characters and dolls! There were 16 vendors, many dedicated and new. There were four sellers/representatives from Miniature Enthusiasts of Edmonton. They shared informally how miniature venues, rooms and items were made and
where their inspirations came from.
A person is never too old to like, enjoy, collect, play with, or do whatever they want to do with toys and dolls. We collect for so many reasons - toys and dolls are nostalgic and as we get older we not only have more disposable income but can appreciate the skill and detail that was used to create them. We work out unresolved issues from childhood; we take comfort in cuddling and playing with teddy bears, dolls, hot wheels; toys - they don’t judge us and we can just enjoy them for what they are and the memories they provide.”

Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather & Great-Grandfather
I Am With You Still
I give you this one thought to keep
I am with you still - do not weep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not think of me as gone-
I am with you still - in each new dawn

Food gardening is getting hot as people are concerned about food security, what is in their food and food prices.
We can grow berries that are better for you than mangos because berries are a little bit lower in sugar.
Raised bed gardening is super popular as the advantage to being in a raised bed is that the soil gets nice and warm. Also, depending on your mobility level, you can build them higher so you don’t have to bend over in the garden, just add extra compost and mulch.
Another tip is to get your cool crops in first: Swiss chard, radishes, and head lettuce like it cool. Then when it gets warmer, plant the leaf lettuces that are way more heat tolerant later. Tomatoes also like heat. There are vegetables you can grow in containers. When you are growing vegetables, they need six to eight hours of sunshine. No vegetable likes to grow in the shade.
Containers need fresh soil each year; unless you have a bigger planter, if you refresh the top 10 inches; that would be good. Also, make sure you have good drainage holes. I use mulch in all my containers as this helps to hold moisture in.
When you have a small garden it is important to have this in the right location and know where the sun and wind exposure are. With compatible food gardening; tomatoes and basil are good together in the same spot. For more ideas, look this up online.”

Vegreville Garden Club presented Sharon Wallish Murphy as their guest speaker on April 29 at Vegreville Agricultural Society.
Murphy welcomed everyone while she walked attendees through gardening trends for 2024 and ways to have the best food and flower gardens.
“The colour of the year is peach fuzz. If you want to know what colours are in, visit a shopping mall, whatever colours are in fashion will
be in homewares and will be in, in the garden.
Perennials are great for sustainability as they decrease your footprint and many have deep tap roots. Those tap roots make them heat tolerant. They also have bulky roots. It is the bulk and sugar that is stored in those roots through the winter, which is what keeps them from freezing. The way they store sugars for the next year will make them zone-hardy.
When you grow perennials, I always say the first year treat them like an annual. Be nice to

This amount was generated from (VCU) Silent Auction from March 4 to March 22. Senior Member Service Representative Jennifer Young said that the Vegreville Branch of (VCU) has been hosting this event annually and for the past six years, they have supported
Vegreville
KidSport Vegreville.
“We have raised a grand total of $28,961.00 for Kidsport Vegreville since 2019. (VCU) wanted to raise these funds because Kidsport Vegreville provides kids in our community the opportunity to participate in organized sports programs. There are a lot of families in our community that struggle to pay bills and put food on the table. They wouldn’t be able to put their children into sports activities without support from KidSport.” Chair for KidSport Vegreville Roy Mills mentioned, “This is a great help to us because we rely on fundraisers to generate revenue to help kids in our community. One hundred percent of the money we get and raise goes for kids’ registration fees to participate in sports.”
