Based on the 2021 federal government census results, Smoky Lake is the fifth fastest growing town in Alberta.
According to the data, population in the Town of Smoky Lake increased by 163 residents since the last Census that was conducted in 2016. The current population is 1,127 compared to 964 in 2016. An increase of 16.9 percent.
Mayor Amy Cherniwchan pointed out that private dwelling have increased by four percent from 499 to 518. “There definitely have been quite a few new businesses in the community that provide our residents with well needed local services.
As far as the census results, Cherniwchan said, “When I think of the new faces I’ve seen in town, and the houses that have been selling, I would say that I was not surprised.” She said there is a mixture of demographics, and she has seen an increases in new families, young couples and retirees. “Smoky Lake is attractive because of its affordable living and small town feel that I believe has become more important in the last couple of years.” She noted that, “Affordable taxes, many family based programs that creates a sense of community and gives people the opportunity to get to know their neighbours.
The growth has made our town more vibrant and exciting as we see great turn outs to family activities and programs. Keeping up to the growing demand for arts, recreation and culture programming can be a challenge, but our administration has been doing well at adapting, and I am confident that this trend will continue.”
Cherniwchan has called the Town of Smoky Lake home for 19 years. I am married and we have 4 beautiful children, 3 girls and a son. The eldest is currently attending the University of Saskatoon, the second eldest is attending Grant MacEwan, and the younger two are proudly enrolled at H.A. Kostash School.
I love the small town feel with its big heart as I always feel safe and supported. The community is welcoming and inclusive of all backgrounds which is something I feel is very important. I also love the options for physical activity such as the walking trail, ice area for various activities, multiple dance instruction options, curling club, golf club, Tae Kwon Do & soccer.”
