confetti falls, the Lombardi Trophy is presented, and the NFL season officially comes to an end. Now we can now get on to far more important things . . . like baseball!

Yes, that’s right, baseball - America’s true pas-

time. Don’t believe me? Well, just ask Terrance Mann, played by James Earl Jones in the classic movie Field of Dreams: “The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It’s been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game — it’s a part of our past. It reminds us of all

that once was good, and it could be again.”

I get goose bumps every time I read those words, especially when spring is right around the corner and the pop of the mitt and the crack of the bat are just a few weeks away. While the Chiefs and Eagles lined up against one another at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Az. on Sunday afternoon, my mind was really about 44 miles to the west in Mesa where at Sloan Park they are getting everything ready for the arrival of the Chicago Cubs. Today and tomorrow are the first days pitchers and catchers can report to Spring Training – the Cactus League in Arizona and the Grapefruit League in south Florida. Opening Day is - thank you, Lord - on March 30, just six short weeks away. The Boys of Summer are back, folks,

and I for one can’t wait for the season to begin.

In so many ways, the game of baseball is a metaphor for life. Whether you’ve played (or still play) baseball, watch it as a fan, or even if you don’t particularly like it, understand it, care about it, or think it’s boring (which I know some people do), the game of baseball can teach us so many important things about life.

Here is a collection of valuable life lessons we can learn from baseball:

• Baseball has no clock. Neither does life, in the grand scheme of things. There is no time limit or “sudden death” overtime. You know there is an end to the game, but never exactly when… just like life.

• In life, like baseball, what happens at the beginning might have no relevance at the end. Baseball season is 162 games. Mangers often remind their players that the season is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be winning streaks and there will be losing streaks. It’s not about where you start, but where you finish. And remember, as Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra once said, “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.”

• Life, like baseball, is not easy and failure is a big part of the game. Even the best achievers fail–a lot. Hitting a baseball is hard. The best hitters are the ones who hit for a .300 average, which means they succeed at their goal only three out of every 10 times. These players know that in order to be the best at what they do, they will have to be prepared to failbut they don’t get discour-

aged. Just like in life, they are willing to take a swing at whatever opportunity comes their way, knowing that, when they do succeed, that’s all people will remember.

• Life, like baseball, is a team sport with people of multiple specialties coming together. What they all do together is figure out what their roles are, how to do their roles well, and how to support each other in their roles.

• In life, like baseball, we are sometimes asked to make sacrifices for the good of the team.

• In life, like baseball, fundamentals are everything.

The metaphors between baseball and life are endless. It’s just one of the many things that make the game so special. I have a favorite movie clip that I post on social media this time every year. It’s from the Disney film, “The Rookie.” The movie tells the true story of Jim Morris, who goes from being an aging Texas High School baseball coach to relief pitcher with the Tampa Bay Rays.

At one point in the film, Morris steals up from behind his teammate Brooks in the clubhouse. With an ear-to-ear grin plastered on his face, he rhetorically asks, “You know what we get to do today, Brooks? We get to play baseball!”

That moment encapsulates the joy I feel when I think about the game I love so much.

District accepting School Choice applications through February

In an effort to give parents more flexibility and control in the educational process for their children, Darlington County School District is again offering district-wide Expanded School Choice requests. The online application period for the 2023-24 school year will continue through Feb. 28.

Under the Expanded School Choice program, students who reside in Darlington County may request to attend any school in the county, except for the Darlington County Virtual Academy and Mayo High School for Math, Science, and Technology. Mayo High School already offers choice as part of its magnet program and is, therefore, not included in the Expanded School Choice program. Darlington County Virtual Academy serves students districtwide, regardless of where they are zoned, but has a separate application process through the Office of Innovative Programs.

Any student in Darlington County may apply for the Expanded School Choice program, regardless of whether that student is currently enrolled in a public school, a private school, or a home school. Through Feb. 28, parents

can submit Expanded School Choice applications through the district’s website, www.dcsdschools. org.

Parents will be notified of their child’s lottery number by email on June 9 after a random selection lottery drawing. Notification emails of the students selected for the available slots will be sent on June 9, giving the selected students the opportunity to transfer to their choice school. The deadline for parents to request the change and confirm the transfer will be June 30. After the deadline passes, any available slots will be filled by the next available lottery number. Please note, the “Stay Put” deadline for Expanded School Choice is July 1. After this date, the student will remain at the school chosen through the end of the semester.

Please be aware that normal school registration will be held before the Expanded Choice notification date of June 9. Parents should go ahead register their child for their zoned school during normal registration. If the student is accepted in Expanded Choice, the registration will be transferred to the new school automatically.

• Choice selections will be based on space availability at the selected school.

• Student athletic eligibility remains under S.C. High School League rules.

• Transportation will not be provided for Expanded School Choice. Parents and guardians are responsible for providing transportation.

• Once a child is selected to participate, Expanded School Choice will remain in effect until the student completes the choice grade level.

• If a child moves into the county after the request period ends, the child must attend the school to which they are zoned. A parent can apply during the next choice cycle.

• It is not necessary for parents to complete an application for their child to attend the school for which they are already zoned and attending.

• The online application for the Expanded School Choice Program will be available on the district’s website through the deadline of Feb. 28. To celebrate Black History Month, the Hartsville News Journal will recognize noteworthy African American individuals, families, and locations with ties to Hartsville, Darlington County, and the Pee Dee Region.

Most stories about the Civil War describe a misguided nation, large egos, and a bitter divide among the citizenship for the ownership of the nation’s collective soul.

America allowed the pursuit of money to cloud obvious truths, societal norms to excuse the degradation of half its citizens. Not all our countrymen failed to see this bigger picture, the melting pot that would become the United States of America. Henry “Uncle Dad” Brown of Darlington was one of these pioneers.

An African American man, Brown voluntarily signed up to serve the Confederacy. In the present day, we might be quite mystified to understand why an African American would serve the very government that wished to keep him in shackles. Brown answered this rather weighty question by telling his critics that he did not wish to preserve slavery or endorse succession. Brown wished, as so many did, to have a part in protecting his homeland, neighbors, and friends.

When Brown joined the war effort he served in the capacity of drummer for the 8th S.C. Infantry under the command of Captain W. H. Evans, later serving with Captain S. H. Wild in the S.C. 21st Regiment.

The Confederate Congress ordered that all African American musicians be paid the same as white musicians. Under this law, Brown was paid $12 a month for his service to the South. To be a drummer during the Civil War era was to truly take your life in your hands. As a musician you were unarmed, but could see just as much action as your armed counterparts. While dangerous, a drummer performed the

necessary function of providing orders to the troops. The instruments booming cadence could be heard more easily than the human voice over cannon blasts.

Brown had many notable experiences during his military service. One such experience was being present in the thick of the fighting at the Battle of Bull Run. Another was when “Uncle Daddy” made off with a pair of Yankee drumsticks. These pilfered drumsticks represented the war to Brown and he was photographed with them as they often accompanied him. This photograph is proudly on display at the Darlington County Historical Society.

After retiring from service, Brown became a wealthy landowner and brick mason. He took many under his wing, offering several apprenticeships. He was even elected to serve as Darlington County’s coroner.

Believing in giving back to his community, Brown did not hoard his success. He often pro-

vided financial assistance to any neighbors in need, regardless of their race. To Brown, you were American before anything else. Brown’s belief was never more clearly on display than at his funeral. When death came for Henry Brown on Nov. 2, 1907, the whole of Darlington society came out to honor this exceptional human being. At his passing, the Darlington Guards, an all white military unit, marched to Brown’s home and kept vigil with his family. Black and white ministers, J.J. Jefferson and D.M. Fulton, presided over his funeral. All white pallbearers brought his casket to its final resting place. He was laid to rest beside his beloved bride, Laura.

A 15- foot monument stands in remembrance of this American titan in Darlington. Through his life and death Henry “Uncle Dad” Brown, embodied the very meaning of America.

DCSD announces Teacher Feature winners

The Darlington County School District’s Teacher Forum has announced the Teacher Feature winners for February. The program recognizes one teacher from each school to honor excellence in education.

Teacher Feature is coordinated by the district’s Teacher Forum, which is composed of each school’s Teacher of the Year. The purpose of the Teacher Forum is to foster professional growth and teacher leadership.

Mackenzie McElveen of Hartsville was recently named to the Dean’s List at Georgia Southern University

Watford named Softball Player of the Week

Taylor Watford, senior designated hitter for Francis Marion University, has been named the Conference Carolinas Softball Player of the Week for the opening week of the 2023 season.

Watford, a native of Lamar and a graduate of Hartsville High School, batted .600 in four games – all Patriot wins – with four runs scored, a double, two homers, and seven runs batted in. She also recorded a .667 on-base percentage and a 1.300 slugging percentage.

She went 4-for-4 with a pair of two-run homers in a 9-0 win at USC Aiken, and then in a doubleheader sweep of Augusta University, she combined to go 2for-3 with three walks and three RBIs.

Watford played two sea-

sons at Ole Miss before transferring to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where she played one season.

The next home games for FMU will be the Patriot Invitational Tournament on Feb. 18-19.

Watford is majoring in psychology.

Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center will host an in-person hiring event that will include open interviews for a range of clinical and nonclinical positions from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the hospital campus in the Main Lobby.
