Raldex Hospitality joins Project Search program

Just as the fourth class of Florence 1’s Project Search program is set to graduate, a second partner site is being added. Raldex Hospitality will join McLeod Regional Medical Center as a host site for this award-winning transition-to-work program for Exceptional Education students.

School districts across the country participate with local partners to offer Project Search. Florence 1 is the first district in South Carolina to have two partner sites.

Florence 1’s Project Search

program began in 2019, as an expansion of the employability program already in place in the district. Non-diploma track students learn job skills in areas such as housekeeping, food service and surgery prep that will help them gain employment after high school. With the addition of Raldex Hospitality, more students will be able to take advantage of the program.

Brian Denny, assistant superintendent of Exceptional Children, said that he was so pleased to add another partner for the

Wilson alumni present $50,000 donation

A rainy Monday morning turned out to be a very bright day for Wilson High School students, faculty and staff. On their behalf, Dr. Eric Robinson, Principal of Wilson High, accepted $50,000 donated by the Wilson High School Alumni Association on Jan. 30.

“I am ecstatic about the donation from the Wilson High School Alumni Association,” said Robinson. “It is the largest donation received from the group since I have been principal. “

Robinson, who has served as principal of Wilson High School for the past 12 years, has annually accepted a gift from each alumni association president. Last year Wilson High received a gift amount of $10,000 from the WHSAA.

“Our students have had so much success with Project Search with one site,” Denny said. “When Raldex agreed to join us as a second partner site, we were thrilled. This will open up even more opportunities for our students to learn the valuable skills they will need for employment in the future as well as increase the number of students we can accept for the program.”

“As always, we use the donations to help students of Wilson High School obtain resources they may need to be successful in and out of the classroom,” added Robinson.

Mark Bailey, president of the WHSAA said, “The WHSAA raises money through various events throughout the year with the Wilson High homecoming festivities serving as the largest fundraiser. In addition, personal donations are provided by alumni members and alumni

Black History Month

Jazz musician Houston Person

To celebrate, Black History Month The News Journal is recognizing noteworthy African Americans with ties to Florence and the Pee Dee Region.

Rich in soul and harmony, the Pee Dee has produced many talented artists, not the least of which is Houston Person.

Born on Nov. 10, 1934, into a music loving family, Person fondly remembers his parents playing jazz music on warm Florence nights.

After completing high school, Person went on to graduate from South Carolina State College. Not willing to forget their storied graduate, in 1999 the college inducted Person into its Hall of Fame.

An accomplished piano player, at 17 he turned his sights to learn-

ing the tenor saxophone. After this instrumental turning point, Person found himself a member of a U.S. Air Force Service Band stationed in West Germany. A few of his band mates were none other than Jazz pioneers Eddie Harris, Laney Morgan, Cedar Walton and Leo Wright. From the Air Force, Person enrolled at Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Conn. to continue his education.

Person began finding notoriety in the 1960’s under the Prestige Records recording label. Success came with his debut album as a bandleader with Underground Soul for Prestige Records in 1966. The album featured organist Charles Boston.

With the triumph of his debut album, this brightly burning star went on to produce more than 75 albums during his long career. He has been associated with several recording labels throughout the years - Prestige, Mercury, Muse, and HighNote just to name a few. Person is best known for his musical collaborations with famed vocalist and Aiken native Etta Jones. Their musical

Belle Baruch celebrates retirement of co-director

Housed within FMU’s McNair Institute for Research and Service, The Belle Baruch Institute for South Carolina Studies was established in 2017 by a unique partnership between Francis Marion University, Coastal Carolina University, and the Belle W. Baruch Foundation at Hobcaw Barony in Georgetown. Professor Emeritus Dr. Lynn Hanson was named the first co-director of the institute.

Hanson and her students have spent the last six years entrenched in research projects that unearthed more of who the late Belle Baruch was and the impact that she has had on South Carolina’s history.

With multi-disciplinary, collaborative projects like archiving more than 6,100 check stubs, authentically recreating clothing, and 3-D printing replicas of world-class equestrian medals, it is easy to see why. After officially retiring from FMU in 2020, Hanson stayed on as an associate co-director through last December. Even now that her time directing BISCS is ending, Hanson is excited to continue her research and hopes to see more FMU faculty “bitten by the same bug” to create student/faculty research opportunities at Hobcaw Barony.

While she considers every project her favorite, she was most moved by the unique environment and possibilities of Hobcaw Barony.

She feels that the new co-director, Dr. Rick Almeida is well suited for the job.

“He is infinitely curious, that will serve him well,” said Hanson.

Almeida is an associate professor of political science. He has been with FMU for fifteen years. Almeida said he hopes to create new connections with FMU disciplines and departments that have not previously worked with BISCS. He also looks forward to continuing to grow relationships with Coastal Carolina, as well as with University of South Carolina and Clemson, who have conducted research at Hobcaw Barony since the 1960s.

The McNair Institute and BISCS will continue to grow opportunities for FMU faculty to pursue research opportunities that positively impact South Carolina at Hobcaw Barony and beyond.

sion of the Wilson High Alumni Association is continuing the legacy of excellence in education, building character, promoting community involvement, and supporting Wilson High School both financially and physically.

“The WHSAA is committed to making a difference in the lives of both current Wilson High School students and alumni,” said Bailey.

“The Wilson Alumni Association is a model for

other institutions nationally, given the reach, depth, and longevity of their organization in support of their alma mater,” said Porter Stewart, Chairman of the Florence 1 Schools Board of Trustees.

“What is so striking about the association is the evident community among its members that is so telling on every occasion they gather. The Wilson alums truly enjoy each other while also working together to support future alums – the current students at Wilson High School. Well done, Wilson

Alumni Association and thank you.”

Robinson explained that typically, funds donated by the association are used to purchase items that the school does not already have, or to provide items to enhance specific programs.

Christ and the Holy Spirit

Q: I became a Christian a couple years ago but am troubled that I’m still drawn by the things I used to love doing. I know now that these things are bad because they lead me to act sinfully. Isn’t Christ supposed to change people like me? – O.L.

A: The moment we receive Christ, we receive the Holy Spirit and are given a new nature that contends with our old nature. By the old birth we are children of the flesh; by the new birth we are children of God.

This is why Jesus told Nicodemus that he must be “born again” (John 3:3). After we receive Christ as Savior, we may be confused sometimes because many old temptations have not disappeared. We still sin. Sometimes we lose our tempers. Pride and jealousy may still crop up from time to time. This is not only confusing, it is discouraging and sometimes leads to spiritual depression. We may even have some particular “besetting sin” that plagues us that we do not seem to be able to conquer. Whenever the old nature asserts itself, we may begin to doubt whether or not we are really saved.

Satan wants us to doubt our salvation to make us ineffective. We must grow in Christ by studying the Word of God. The more we commune with God by reading His Word and spending time in prayer, the less we want of our old ways. The new nature begins to take over by the power of God’s Word that speaks into our hearts and puts our minds on Him and sets our feet on the right path. We must let the Bible become central to life and set our minds on the things of God (see Galatians 6:8); for we cannot grow spiritually strong without His truth.

GOD’S WORD

“Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin!

— Proverbs 21:6

First Amendment to The Constitution

ANOTHER VIEW

OPINION

How many times have we listened as the highly popular clinical psychologist with the shiny dome and the wooly upper lipholstery posed that question to one of his patients and/or guests over the last quarter century?

Santos has admitted to “embellishments” (hardly the full story) but has denied breaking any laws. Yet Politico reported earlier this month that Santos’ campaign had filed numerous expenses all with the improbably precise amount of $199.99, just one cent below the threshold that would have triggered a requirement to preserve invoices or receipts.

Like so much with Santos, that little scheme boggles the mind.

We add our voice to the massed choir that calls for Santos’ resignation. If a fabulist of this level of invention is fit to serve in Congress, then the message sent to young Americans about what public service represents and demands is utterly compromised. It befuddles us that Santos’ Republican colleagues apparently don’t see this situation through a longer lens than the political expediency of the moment.

But that’s not our main point here. The Santos situation is a reminder that once unsuitable candidates are elected for public office, they are very difficult to remove because colleagues weigh the possibility of other consequences, especially for themselves. Exhibit A here is former President Donald Trump.

There were plenty of early misgivings in the media when it came to Trump. But when it comes to local races, voters cannot always trust the media with the biggest reach to do that job for them.

For example, as The Washington Post eventually noted, a small paper on Long Island cast serious doubts on the veracity of Santos’ back story, as the paper was doing its early due diligence by scrubbing the candidate via publicly available records.

Back in September, Long Island’s The North Shore Leader figured out that Santos had not adequately explained the source of a sudden increase in his net wealth, and that he appeared to own no actual U.S. real estate despite claims of owning mansions. The North Shore Leader is a Republican-leaning newspaper, but Santos was a bridge too far. “He’s most likely just a fabulist,” the paper wrote. “A fake.”

Strong words. Gutsy words. Accurate words, subsequent events have suggested.

That should have been the end of Santos’ candidacy right there, but the problem was that no one appeared to have paid attention in the ensuing weeks. The fine work done by the North Shore Leader did not stop Santos.

Perhaps the paper itself did not do all it could have to get the word out about this “fabulist” and “fake” on the ballot. But this surely was a reminder that even though we hear a lot about the collapse of local news in America, there remains some excellent, on-the-ground journalism. In this case, at least, the issue was not a lack of reporting on the inconsistencies in Santos’ story, because clearly there was such reporting, but on the problem of nobody with a bigger megaphone actually paying timely attention.

It’s one thing to talk about a crisis in local news, but sometimes the crisis is caused by misplaced priorities within the national media.

The result was the election of a man who egregiously deceived his supporters (on any number of important matters) and who thus had no right to be in office as their representative. The facts were in plain sight if anyone had cared to look.

Of course, voters have an obligation here, too. The Santos affair is a reminder that it is imperative to get to know the candidates for whom you are voting, whatever the nature of the election.

Santos is one heck of a reminder of how far one man can get if the usual checks and balances within our democracy do not function as they should. We should have learned that lesson the last time it happened.

Phil McGraw, a.k.a “Dr. Phil,” announced last week that he plans to end his long-running talk show in the coming months. His show, be it real or surreal, has been a fixture on daytime television for more than 20 years.

“With this show, we have helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and raising children,” McGraw said in a released statement. “This has been an incredible chapter of my life and career, but while I’m moving on from daytime, there is so much more I wish to do.”

There are many, I’m sure, who are saddened by this news. I, for one, am not. I’ve never been a big fan of the doctor or his program. It’s just my personal opinion, but I think most of it was contrived for entertainment and ratings. I don’t see it as too much different from The Jerry Springer Show, except for the fact that I think we all knew that its convoluted shenanigans were just that – nonsense. The Dr. Phil Show seemed to lead people to believe that the guests and their stories were 100 percent

Bob

truth. As the not-so-affable doctor was also known to say – “I’m not buying it.”

Consider this: If you were having problems which led you to a see a psychologist, would you be willing to let your personal problems be hung out on television like a load of dirty laundry and then get paid handsomely for it?

While I won’t shed any tears over the good doctor’s departure from daytime TV, I know many will. To all of you “Phil-istines,” don’t fret, because it’s far from the last we have seen of Dr. McGraw. In LeBronspeak, Dr. Phil is merely taking his talent to Prime Time. If anything, he’s planning to up his game so to speak.

We can thank Oprah for introducing us to Phil in 1998. He got his own show in 2002, which went on to dominate the ratings and garnered 31 Emmy nominations and won five PRISM Awards.

In recognition of Phil’s lengthy tenure on the tube, here are some of the more memorable guests that have appeared on the show:

• In 2016 a teenage girl named Haley appeared on the show and was adamant that she was nine months

pregnant, despite pregnancy tests and doctors telling her otherwise. She claimed she was giving birth to baby Jesus. Dr. Phil arranged for Haley to get an ultrasound, which revealed that she was not with child. Of course, that didn't stop Haley from still believing she was pregnant.

Haley also claimed rapper Eminem was her father and that she'd been a contestant on American Idol. Her family, not surprisingly, refuted both statements.

• Marianne was shocked when her husband confessed he'd gone to an adult club on a couple of occasions 15 years earlier. Since the confession, Marianne became obsessed not only with her own looks, but those of her 19-year-old daughter, Miranda, as well. Miranda took her mom on the Dr. Phil show because Marianne started doing everything she could to look like a stripper and encouraged the same from Miranda.

Marianne got breast implants and a large tattoo on her back, and she installed a pole in her house. She also talked Miranda into getting breast implants. The mother explained to her daughter that men are into large breasts and they don't care about a woman’s education.

• Jessica was a guest on Dr. Phil who was desperate to know why her mother Patricia was lying to people about having cancer. While

Patricia did have brain surgery at one time, she'd never had cancer. She made local TV appearances stating she had stage-three brain cancer. She also claimed to have survived at least 17 strokes, which was also untrue. She used her fake illnesses to scam people out of money in fundraisers.

• The guest of all guest, however, has to be the obnoxious teenager Danielle Bregoli. She was rude and argumentative, not only with Dr, Phil, but also with audience members. At one point during a verbal confrontation with an audience member, the 13-yearold shouted, “Catch me outside. How about that?” To the television audience, it sounded more like “Cash Me Ousside. How Bow Dah?” The phrase quickly hit the Internet and went viral.

Bregoli, now 20, would cash in on her Dr. Phil appearance. Using the stage name “Bhad Bhabie,” she became a rapper and had a top 10 hit with the song “These Heaux” in 2017. Her estimated net worth in 2022 was $29 million.

We have so much for which to thank Dr. Phil. If you sense a bit of sarcasm, you are correct. There’s no telling what we’ll see from him in Prime Time.

Classified document stink piles

An Old Testament story records an overwhelming infestation of frogs throughout Egypt. There was no place in Egypt where frogs were not present in large numbers. The plague was sent in response to Pharoah’s attitude toward the Israelite people who lived in slavery under his rule. When God ended the plague there were piles of dead frogs all over Egypt. In the streets, bedrooms, bathrooms, closets, storage facilities, and places we can only imagine. It became a very stinky situation as they raked up the dead frogs and piled them up all over Egypt.

The Classified Document saga seems to be growing in similar fashion to the dead frogs of Egypt. They appear to be everywhere and they stink. The odor has to be particularly bad for Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden as well as Vice President Mike Pence.

First came the big raid of Trump’s home in Florida. Late at night, FBI agents went through his home and personal items and carried out boxes of documents. Next, we hear that Biden has had classified documents in his home for years. They seem to be scattered everywhere

throughout his house. Then, Mike Pence in Indiana has more classified documents. What are these men doing with these documents? They are scattered out like the dead frogs of Egypt.

Again, what are these individuals doing with classified documents? I used to keep a big box of comic books when I was a kid. I would read a comic and then put it in the box. Sometimes I would read them again. I definitely knew that I had them. Why would past administrations hold on to classified documents? How did they get to the locations where they were found?

The National Archives has asked all the former Presidents to check for classified documents. Jimmy Carter? Where would he have them? In his family Bible? Mixed in with old Sunday school lessons that he has taught at the local Baptist Church? I don’t think so but you never know who might have picked them up, packed them in a

box, and placed them on a shelf in his garage. What about George W. Bush? Could documents be under the seat of his old truck? Bill Clinton has emphatically stated he does not have any classified documents but he has made emphatic statements before. These former Presidents have said they do not have such documents.

Did Trump carry these documents out of the White House when he and his family climbed aboard the Presidential helicopter? I’ve never seen Trump or Biden carry anything. Which aid picked up some boxes and tossed them into the moving van? Where is White House security when it comes to classified documents?

Only time will tell and we may never know for sure about the plethora of classified documents. We hope they aren’t reading some of them in China or Russia. Who can say for sure where they are not being read? We do not know for sure whether or not someone else has them. Could another family member have a box or two somewhere? How much money would China, Russia or others pay for classified documents?

Democrats and Republicans will point fingers and scream about all this in the next election. Both sides will try to make the other side look worse but it appears there is plenty of stink everywhere

McLeod Regional unveils new Electrophysiology Device Lab

The McLeod Heart and Vascular Institute has opened a new dedicated Electrophysiology Device Lab at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

With the opening of the new lab, McLeod Health now has four dedicated Electrophysiology Labs: one at McLeod Health Seacoast and three at the Florence campus. Pacemakers, defibrillators, and internal loop recorders are some of the services that are offered in this new space.

With this three physician team, volume demands and case complexity have increased and an additional Electrophysiology Lab was warranted. The new lab had been designed to accommodate physician workspace from both sides of the operating table, ease of access for stretchers, upgraded imaging equipment, and a cohesive monitoring room.

Radiation exposure is always a concern in electrophysiology. Excellent image quality and the lowest possible radiation dose are both requirements for patient and staff. Additionally, the new system at McLeod is a truly integrated solution for enhanced patient care. It is

The opening of the new Electrophysiology Lab has also paved the way for increased availability for cases performed by the McLeod Structural Heart

Team. Many of these procedures need the advanced technological equipment available in a specialized lab.

The McLeod Structural Heart Program specializes in minimally invasive and surgical treatment of patients with a variety of structural heart diseases, including patients who do not qualify for conventional open-heart proce-

dures. Examples of minimally invasive treatments include Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) for the treatment of aortic stenosis, MitraClip for the treatment of mitral regurgitation, and ASD/PFO closure.

A city-block’s worth of delicious bites and sips, with winemakers, craft-brewers and distillers, pouring and pairing alongside the region’s best restaurants, farmers, and specialty-food vendors, the Grand Tasting will offer ticket-holders an all-you-can-sample taste of the Pee Dee’s tantalizing food culture, with a performance stage sponsored by Certified S.C. offering chef demonstrations, competitions, and live music!

Born in Conway, Button was bound for a doctorate degree in biomedical engineering when she took a job at José Andres’s groundbreaking Café Atlantico in Washington, D.C. There, she fell in love with both the food business and her colleague Félix Meana, a Roses, Spain native who would become her husband and partner on a journey first to Spain, where they worked at Ferran Adrià’s legendary El Bulli, and upon returning to the U.S., in opening Cúrate Bar de Tapas in Asheville in 2011.

Button soon earned a

brush fire acclaim for her authentic Spanish cuisine, including being named a Best New Chef by Food & Wine Magazine. Esquire Magazine called Cúrate one of the “Most Important Restaurants of the Decade.”

Button is a four-time nominee for the James Beard Award for Best Chef Southeast and in 2022, Cúrate won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Hospitality. In addition to being CEO/Executive and Chief Experience Officer, respectively, Button and Meana are parents to Gisela and Lalo.

The 2023 Florence Wine & Food Festival benefits Help4Kids Florence, a 100% volunteer-led organization that helps feed food-insecure families in the region by providing food packs to elementary schools in Florence County to send home with children every Friday, so that kids return to school on Monday fed, rested, and ready to learn.
