CREATIVE BLOCK - NEW LOOK The new, refreshed Creative Block packaging is inspired by the age-old craft of letterpress. The simple, modern and bold design is true to the craft and passion that goes into each of these award-winning blends. Named and inspired by the Spier Arts Academy project, our winemakers combine grapes from different vineyard blocks to curate unique tastes – always so much more than the sum of their parts.

PEOPLE
AGENTS OF CHANGE AT SPIER WE’RE COMMITTED TO NURTURING A POSITIVE, ETHICAL AND EMPOWERING WORKPLACE FOR OUR TEAM.
“Our various team initiatives go to the very core of the way we do business: they’re manifestations of Spier’s commitment to having a positive social and environmental impact,” says Heidi Newton-King, Spier’s Director of Sustainability and Huma Resources.
LESLEY JOERMAT TREE-PRENEURS MANAGER
The Tree-preneurs Project Leader at the farm, Lesley Joemat, works hard to save fuel and electricity as she actively recycles and conserves the environment. She felt motivated to use her ILS to buy a bicycle. “I felt it was important for my health and fitness to use the bike when collecting seeds for our nursery on the farm. Reducing my own carbon footprint, mixing exercise, the outdoors and work was perfect for me.”
“WE RECOGNISE THAT EACH EMPLOYEE IS UNIQUE WHICH IS WHY WE WANT TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMPLOYEES BEYOND THE NORMAL SCOPE OF EMPLOYMENT,” says Heidi.
BEN MAY MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT
Maintenance Assistant Ben May says: “I feel privileged that the ILS meant I could complete a welding course and then buy welding equipment which I use on home improvements and my work benefits from my improved skills.”
One leading initiative was the introduction of an Individual Learning Spend (ILS) for each employee’s personal and career development. Implemented in 2010, this unique initiative allocates training funds to employees to be used towards developing intellectual, emotional, physical or spiritual skills and knowledge.
THE SPIER HOTEL WAS ONE OF THE FIRST IN THE COUNTRY TO BE AWARDED FAIR TRADE IN TOURISM ACCREDITATION IN 2003.
JOYLENE CORNELIUS WELLNESS CO-COORDINATOR
FOLLOWING ITS 2013 AUDIT, SPIER RECEIVED A 10-YEAR CERTIFICATION AWARD, AN EXCELLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE AWARD AND AN EXCELLENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AWARD.
What initially started out as a wellness challenge at work has spurred Joylene Cornelius to take up walking and running. “By being more active, I feel I can be more creative in my role as Wellness CoCoordinator if I lead by example and take my health more seriously. I have decided to use my ILS to invest in a TomTom fitness tracker watch. It’s a motivation tool for me to earn Discovery Vitality points and also keep track of how I am doing – whether I am running, swimming, walking, or working out.”

WINE
A NEW LOOK FOR ONE OF OUR FAVOURITES ENJOY OUR AWARD-WINNING CREATIVE BLOCK BLENDS
“That’s just a guide,” says Spier Cellar Master Frans Smit. ‘There are no strict rules, and wine doesn’t always have to be had with food. I like to keep a bottle of Creative Block red for after the last guest has left. Savouring a glass all on its own, in my study when all is quiet, and without any food at all, is a more contemplative taste experience for me.’
A NEW CAPE WINE MASTER! Anton Swarts, a member of our winemaking team, is now a Cape Wine Master – one of only 100 in the country to receive this prestigious qualification – the wine industry’s highest.
Rich, juicy, meaty stews and casseroles are on the cards for long lazy winter lunches and dinners with friends. So what wines do you have up your sleeve, to match your cooking? To partner with meaty winter stews, casseroles and pies, the sommeliers and winemakers of Spier agreed wholeheartedly: Creative Block 3 or Creative Block 5. These two award-winning red blends from Spier has recently been repackaged and brings a retro-modern design feel to the table. The boldly classic letterpress-style numbers on the labels represent how many varietals have gone into the blend. This, along with the textured off-white paper and a Spier crest in gold foil, emphasises Spier’s history of producing handcrafted, high-quality wines.
Congratulations, MECHE! Wine Shop wine educator Meche Cupido obtained high marks upon completing the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits with high marks Congratulations Meche!.
Creative Block is a range inspired by a Spier art project that combines different artworks by different artists, to come up with something altogether different. And that’s exactly how blends are made. By combining different varietals to come up with completely new and unusual tastes. As a rule of thumb, you’d pair a rich, complex blend – like Creative Block 3 or 5 - with similarly rich, complex food. So the wine doesn’t overpower the food, and vice versa.

ART
SPIER’S TOP 10 ARTWORKS SPIER HAS A LONG HISTORY OF SUPPORTING AND SHOWCASING THE ARTS. The farm is home to one of the largest collections of contemporary South African art in the country. Many of these are displayed in public areas such as the Manor House and Wine Tasting venue where they can be enjoyed by our visitors. Here are 5 of our favourites.
1.
1. The Dying Slave by Marco Cianfanelli
Location: On the walkway between the hotel and conference venue Mosaic – 9 columns of 4,2 x 0,6 x 0,3m each When seen from a specific vantage point, the nine columns line up to reveal the complete image of The Dying Slave. Designed by Cianfanelli, the image was inspired by Michelangelo’s well-known artwork featuring a male slave in the throes of dying. The artwork consists of 225 000 handcut tesserae (mosaic pieces), created by the Spier Arts Academy.
2.
3.
2. Recycled chandelier by Heath Nash
Location: Tasting Room Glass bottles The chandelier above the Tasting Room’s counter was created by artist Heath Nash from 334 recycled wine bottles, and weighs about 370kg. The visually striking work embodies Spier’s commitment to a sustainable future. 3. Altered Yarns by Tamlin Blake
Location: Eight Restaurant Newspaper This collection of tapestry artworks was created by Tamlin Blake, a participant of the Spier Arts Patronage Programme. Using a homemade spindle, she spun dyed sheets of newspaper cut into thin strips to create a textured yarn. Mirroring this intricate process, Blake’s works explore the many ways in which our lives are shaped by the stories of others. 4. Vortex I by Richard Forbes
Location: On the lawns near the wine collection point Painted steel – 4100 x 4500 mm This installation is a physical expression of energy, unseen force and the wind that makes a storm to create a vortex. It symbolises the twist of the fabric of life which could be a portal to an alternate dimension, a wormhole through time and a fresh perspective. 5. Creative Block artworks

The Creative Block project gives opportunities to artists of outstanding talent. This is achieved by providing artists with blank blocks, to be transformed in any media they wish. The Creative Block invites artists, both established and emerging, to create work on a 18cm x 18cm blank block. The blocks are submitted for critique, and the best are purchased for resale to corporate patrons and the general public. Collectors then choose a number of blocks and hang them together, building an impactful, collective artwork that has the potential to be greater than the sum of its parts. Because of the synergy between this process and the art of blending wine, Spier named its blended wine range after the project – the award-winning Creative Block 2, 3 and 5 wines.
ART
SPIER’S TOP 10 ARTWORKS SPIER HAS A LONG HISTORY OF SUPPORTING AND SHOWCASING THE ARTS. 6. Wild Dogs I and Wild Dogs II by Liza Grobler in collaboration

7.
with Qubeka Bead Studio
Location: Hotel foyer Beads on board, 1 150 x 1 950 mm Grobler blurs the traditions of craft and fine art, breathing new life into discarded, mass-produced materials through traditional craft techniques like crochet, beading and weaving. The Qubeka Bead Studio is self-sufficient, owned entirely by the bead artists themselves. Currently run by three dynamic artists and businesswomen – Neliswa Skiti, Mandisa Masina and Nolababalo Kanku – it collaborates with professional fine artists to produce signature works. 7. Ouroboros by Bronwyn Lace
8.
9. Untitled
Location: River Walk Rhinoceros skeleton, steel, steel cable Ouroboros is the ancient Egyptian symbol of the serpent eating its own tail. For her artwork, Lace used a donated skeleton of a rhinoceros killed some years ago during a lightning storm in the Cradle of Humankind, Gauteng. Through a process of dismantling the bones and reconfiguring them (using steel and steel cable), she has created a newly articulated skeleton – an artwork that embodies ancient symbolic meaning – eternity, infinity and rebirth which stands in stark contrast to what we are currently witnessing in relation to the rhinoceros, an animal soon to find itself on the extinction list. 8. Night of the Mongrels by David Koloane
Location: Manor House Oil on canvas Koloane often uses a dog as a metaphor in his work, as in the case of this work. The artist was born in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, and was instrumental in the founding of the Bag Factory, a collection of artists’ studios in Fordsburg.
by Kagiso Patrick Mautloa
Location: Hotel Bar/Lounge Mixed media on canvas Mautloa’s creative practice avoids a concise definition as he employs a wide range of media and styles. Born in Ventersdorp, he is essentially an urban artist, drawing his inspiration from the street culture, the dynamics of the changing city and the people he encounters there. He lives and works in Johannesburg. 10. The Mosaic Kraal by Various artists
9.
10.
Location: Near Wine Collection Point Mosaic The Spier Mosaic Kraal features the works of 16 contemporary South African artists including Selvin November, Lindile Magunya and Pierre Fouché. In close consultation with each artist, the images were interpreted as mosaic artworks by apprentices of the Spier Arts Academy (which offers employment-based training in professional mosaic and ceramic in Cape Town).

MOTHER’S DAY
EASTER
HOGHOUSE BEATS & BBQ
Lucky moms were treated to a decadent high tea at Spier Hotel in celebration of Mother’s Day. A glass of Spier Méthode Cap Classique on arrival was followed by a wide range of teas and coffees and a cake-stand crammed with sweet and savoury treats.
Easter was certainly a memorable one to those who visited Spier over the course of the long weekend. Eight hosted a farm-to-table feast on Good Friday and Sunday. Other diners were treated to a spit roast lunch in the Old Wine Cellar while the kids went hunting for Easter eggs on our Werf. In addition to its usual mouthwatering menu, the Hoghouse BBQ and Bakery served up Easter-inspired pastries hot from the oven throughout the weekend – including its legendary Hogcross Bun.
Hoghouse recently hosted an evening of good food and live music on its bakery terrace. Craft beer, Spier wine and G&Ts from the DIY Gin Bar accompanied Hoghouse’s delicious slow-roasted BBQ while patrons were entertained by BRYNN, a poetic folk band and alternative rock group. Spier at the Top 100 SA Wines 2017
Four Spier wines have been included in the seventh edition of the Top 100 SA Wines, which forms part of the 2017 National Wine Challenge. Leading the pack is the Woolworths Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, which was awarded Grand Cru National Champion Best in Class.

“The Woolworths Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 is crafted from a blend of Stellenbosch and Darling grapes. The former provides its restrained structure while the latter’s higher temperatures provide a luxurious richness,” Spier cellar master Frans Smit says. “This intoxicatingly complex combination makes this one of our most frequently awarded wines.” The other three wines to receive Top 100 – or double platinum – status were the Spier 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, the Spier Creative Block 3 2014 and the Woolworths Private Collection Chenin Blanc 2015.
