The video of the prolific winger taking on the world’s largest passenger aircraft was one of South Africa’s top ten last year and British Airways’ most popular to date.
The V&A Waterfront's cutting-edge No. 1 Silo development was the clear winner at the 2014 South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) awards held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, walking off with three awards and the coveted crown of Overall Winner.

No. 1 Silo also won the Overall Green Award and was the winner of the Corporate Office Development category. The neighbouring No. 2 Silo was the winner in the Residential Development category.
Its success gave rise to a competition to emulate the feat, which South African Rudolph Raath won against three other international competitors. It also prompted British Airways to offer FoodBank South Africa two Club World (business class tickets) worth some R60 000 if the clip reached 2 million views.

SU Choir world champions in three categories When the Stellenbosch University (SU) Choir won the category for Spiritual music with the highest score ever to be awarded to a choir at the World Choir Games (98,38%) they were over the moon. Little did they know that they would soon improve their own record by dominating the category for mixed choirs with a score of 99%. The SU Choir left for Riga, the capital of Latvia, on 6 July to participate in the World Choir Games organised by Interkultur. They also won the third category they participated in, Musica Sacra, with a score of 95,63%. This means they are the world champions in three categories.
According to Wilmie Kritzinger, choir manager, the composer of the last work happened to be one of the judges and he gave the choir 10/10. The SU Choir, with conducter André van der Merwe, dedicated all their performances to the late Prof Russel Botman, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of SU who passed away on 28 June. At the World Choir Games held in Cincinnati in the USA in 2012, the choir was placed in the first position on the Interkultur world rankings. They were also the winners in two categories: the best mixed choir (male and female voices) and Musica Sacra (sacred music) and won second place in the category popular music.

Our aim from the start has been to support the communities that are situated along the FNB W2W MTB routes. The Sunflower Fund is a non-profit organisation whose sole purpose is to raise money to pay for the tissue typing of potential bone marrow stem cell donors in turn building the Bone Marrow Registry of South Africa and giving patients suffering with leukaemia and other life threatening blood disorders the hope of finding their 1:100 000 donor match. It is possible for a sibling to be a donor match (25% chance) but most patients are not so lucky so the search for a matching unrelated donor must begin. It is very unlikely that this life saving donor match will be found outside a patient’s ethnic group which means in South Africa 100 000 of the four prominent ethnic groups (black, coloured, Indian and white) need to be educated and recruited. Although it only takes two test tubes of blood to become a donor it costs R2000 to tissue type this blood sample before it can be included on the registry. In order to create an effective and representative registry for all South African patients, The Sunflower Fund has to raise much needed funds. If ever you were called up as a match for a patient the procedure only entails donating blood. There is no surgery involved.

The third development project in the district is the repurposed historical Grain Silo Complex that will ultimately form the permanent home of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). The V&A Waterfront has committed R500-million to the redevelopment project of this not for profit enterprise.

FoodBank South Africa plans to auction the tickets at its annual banquet later this year. “We initially thought that 2 million views was a big target but interest in the video kept climbing, and it then received a further boost when British Airways started flying the A380 to South Africa in February,” said Andy du Plessis, FoodBank South Africa, managing director. According to Vicky Hinrichsen, Bizweni Centre Project Manager, the Bizweni Centre currently cares for 51 children. “The Rotary Club of Helderberg has been involved with Bizweni Centre for many years and was instrumental in the building of the new Centre. Each year the Rotary Club has been able to organize wheelchairs for children in need; while being fully involved in the fundraising for our new school bus. We’re grateful for the money raised for our charities, especially for our latest major Bizweni Project which entails the extension of the existing facility into a Skills Development Centre. Chief Scout praises Scout after Winning Survive-It 2014
Fifteen year old Claude Schippers, from 1st Bellville South Scouts Group was announced the winner of Hectic Nine’s Survive It 2014! Chief Scout Sibusiso Vilane praised the youngster for his tenacity and adventurous spirit, while attending a youth fun day in the Western Cape! This year, the reality survival competition was set in the Matroosberg and was one of the toughest seasons yet. Viewers of TV’s popular kid’s show Hectic Nine-9 were able to see their favourite presenters rough it out against 10 Scouts from the Western Cape. Contestants were put to task in tough outdoor situations and voted each other out one by one as the show progressed. The ultimate “Survive-It” survivor was voted for by the viewers of the show and announced and Claude was the last Scout remaining. For the third year running the Scout took the title of Survive it winner! When asked how he pulled it off, Claude smiled and simply replied: “I just did my best. It was very hard. It was very cold and I especially struggled with the food. Having to eat dry rice and beans was not nice. But I thought I am a Scout and I can do this. Chané de Kock Celebrates Life The Celebrate Life Ball (CLB) took place on 28 June at the glamorous Val de Vie Estate in Paarl and was attended by 185 guests. The Celebrate Life Ball was birthed out of a desire by Mrs. South Africa 2014, Chané de Kock, to use a celebration as a vehicle for doing well, and giving back to the people who blessed her in life. Chané wanted to celebrate 4 main events in her life: her year as Mrs SA, her 30th birthday, 10 year wedding anniversary and the launch of her new brand, “Happy and Healthy Co.” Chané also presented her Mrs Universe dresses designed by Anel Botha and Jose de Canha.

Memories Tied into Masterpieces Neckties have been worn for centuries; either for formal wear or to signal an important occasion. It is safe to say that Ties signify a form of respect for self-presentation of a man to look his best. For some reason, it is however difficult to get rid of the old tie, since there is a memory attached to that special event. So where do old ties go? Mrs Cape Town 2013, Chantal Witthuhn found a way to tie all those memories together and to create something new from something old; whilst serving a purpose for charity too. Using her platform as Mrs Cape Town, Chantal set out to identify 3 designers to implement this task. She launched the Save the Tie, Save a Child project and began the collection of ties.
Some of the junior RoleModels SA titleholders also tried their hand at designing tie-garments and strutted their stuff on the catwalk. RoleModels Foundation initiates and supports pre-school facilities in impoverished communities throughout South Africa. It is their belief that a child, who starts school without any formative educational foundation, starts life off at a disadvantage.
Over 4000 ties were donated and the designers, Hein Smit, Marshal Enyioma and Saskia Wicomb got to work. Models were sought and measurements and fittings began. In total 42 garments were created from the old ties.

The evening was lively within a relaxed atmosphere with delicious food. The guests enjoyed dancing the evening away while entertained by Heinz Winckler, The Fire Tribe, and some other amazing entertainers. The main sponsor of this event was Aramex. Capitec Bank and Imperial Logistics also attended the event. The money raised by this event will be donated to the Out of Africa Children’s Foundation to revamp the bathrooms in the cancer ward in Tygerberg Hospital. The ‘Out of Africa Children’s Foundation’ is a non-profit organisation with patrons Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mrs South Africa, Chané de Kock. The ‘Out of Africa Children’s Foundation’ provides accommodation for the direct families of ill children from out of the Cape Town area during the child’s hospitalisation and recovery. It also provides a safe haven for abandoned and abused children. Chané de Kock will take part in the Mrs Universe competition in Kuala Lumpur between 22-29 August where after she will take time off to be with her family. While her husband will be attending a course in California, Chané will be spending time with her children and acquire inspiration for her new brand, Happy and Healthy Co. Chané is a wife, mother of 3 children, health coach, and public speaker. She is ambitious, hard-working, and has a great passion for South Africa and its people. Her down-to-earth personality makes her much loved in the public eye.
Recently a glamorous fashion showcase was hosted at the All Star Theatre, Cape Gate in aid of charity. Marshal Enyioma worked his magic with designs that had a rich ethnic element, whilst Saskia Wicomb’s designs were showcased in a most psychedelic presentation. This was followed by a feminine vintage collection by Hein Smit, ranging from a ‘Lady in red’, fit for a queen to a wedding dress for the prettiest bride. Hein’s first creation raised R5 000.

TopVendor Wedding Awards TopVendor Wedding Awards presents their first annual gala ceremony on 20 August 2014 at Nooitgedacht Estate in Stellenbosch to create a platform to showcase some of the most creative individuals in the growing wedding industry in South Africa. TopVendor Wedding Awards is an independent organization that recognises the hardworking talented professionals in the wedding industry. Seventy participants from all over the country will compete in the following 10 categories: Best Upcoming Wedding Photography, Best Scenic Wedding Photography, Best Overall Wedding Photography, Best Wine Farm Wedding Venue, Best Guest Farm Wedding Venue, Best Wedding Blog, Best Wedding Make-up Artist, Best Wedding Stationary Designer, Best Wedding Floral Detail and Design and Best Wedding Decor and Styling. A Horse - A Dream and an African Queen Barinda Botha of the Western Cape is a finalist in the “Queen of Africa” competition to be held on 30 August at the City Hall in Paarl. The “Queen of Africa” competition caught Barinda, a Djembe Drumming facilitator’s attention. Barinda was attracted to the completion because drums are related to Africa as well as her passion to help others.

Barinda remembers that she was not permitted to hug Emaleigh, due to the high risk of contracting germs. However, Emaleigh’s desire to own a horse, remained in her mind since they met.
As the Bosch family resides in Port Elizabeth, Barinda contacted Freddie van Rensburg, owner of GEG Adventure Tours in PE for assistance to find a horse for Emaleigh. Freddie put her in contact with Andre Ferreira, owner of Nooitgedacht Horse Trails in PE. Today Emaleigh is the proud owner of JP, a 4year old strawberry blond stallion, sponsored by Nooitgedacht Horse Trails, while GEG Adventure Tours sponsored all the equipment & tack. Emaleigh is entitled to visit JP at Nooitgedacht at anytime. Emaleigh is currently in hospital for treatments and can't wait to meet JP. According to her parents, Emaleigh said that she will only believe it when she is able to touch her own horse. SAWI Wine Awards Results The South African Wine Index (SAWi) acknowledged South African wine excellence at its recent event held at the luxurious Grootbos Private Nature Reserve near Gansbaai. Guests, producers and wine makers were treated to a tasting of the winning wines before the presentation of the awards. The event was a showcase of South African ‘Grand Wines’ – highlighting the value of the SAWi principles and methodology. Constantia Glen took top honors on the night, receiving the SAWi Trophy for Wine Producer of the Year while De Morgenzon received the 2014 SAWi Trophy for White Wine Producer of the Year. The Trophy for the 2014 SAWi Red Wine Producer of the Year went to Kanonkop Estate. The inaugural Trophy for Best South African Brandy Producer was awarded to KWV. Chardonnay dominated, with 17 accolades, followed by Shiraz wines with 12, Sauvignon Blanc Hempies du Toit and Beyers Truter and Bordeaux Blends with 10 each, Pinotage 8, Pinot Noir 6 and Red Blends 5. Hemel and Aarde Valley had 14 wine accolades, followed by Constantia with 10 and Tulbach with 7, whilst Elgin, Franshhoek, Paarl, Stellenbosch Kloof, Blaauwklippen and Idas Valley had 5 each. Wines from Stellenbosch West, Blaauwklippen, Cederberg, Somerset West, Franshhoek and Durbanville made up the rest. Once again, outlying wine pockets like Cederberg, Tulbach, and even Barrydale featured prominently.
Charles Back Receives IWC Lifetime Achievement Award

In its 31st year, the International Wine Challenge is accepted as the world’s finest and most meticulously judged competition. The coveted award is bestowed upon leaders in the global wine industry who deserve special recognition for the work they have done throughout their lives. Charles was nominated by fellow industry leaders Tim Atkin MW, Charles Metcalfe MW, Sam Harrop MW and Oz Clarke.
Since the start of the SAWi Ratings five years ago, only 32 wines out of a total of 914 which were rated have scored 95+ points, with repeated good performances by the majority of these wines. This year another 13 wines were added to this category. Beyers Truter was honored as the SAWi Wine Legend of the Year and joined Hempies du Toit, Jan Boland Coetzee and Peter Finlayson on this honors roll. His contribution to the global profile of South African wines has made Beyers a true pioneer in the South Africa wine industry.
Bollinger Exceptional Wine Service Award 2014 A wide range of enthusiastic applicants entered the First-Round of The Bollinger Exceptional Wine Service Award 2014. All applicants completed an ‘open book’ test, from which the top seven have progressed to the Semi-Finals. First-Round candidates were assessed on the basis of their completed Questionnaire (theoretical component) for which the minimum pass was 65%, as well as on the basis of their experience in wine service in fine dining establishments. As in the previous Semi-Finals, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, the three provinces with the highest concentration of fine dining restaurants, are represented. The two semi-finalist from the Western Cape are Cashias Gumbo from La Colombe Restaurant, Constantia and Rylan Gentles from Delaire Graff Estate, Stellenbosch.

The panel recognised him for his work in introducing Viognier, Tempranillo, Tannat, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah to South Africa; in pioneering the Swartland Revolution; in shaping the future of wine tourism in South Africa through the introduction of artisanal cheese and the establishment of the Spice Route Destination in Paarl; and in being the first to afford land and company ownership to previously disadvantaged wine farm workers; to name but a few of his many seminal achievements. Charles accepted the award with characteristic humility and grace. "I am humbled and honoured by this prestigious award. I accept it on behalf of the 500 people who work with me. It is their collective endeavour that inspires me to do my best for them and the industry at large. South Africa has provided me the opportunity to use my love for vines and wines to add value to the lives of those who tend them,” he shares.
The Semi-Finals will take place on 18th August 2014 at Catharina’s Restaurant at Steenberg Estate in Constantia. In addition to a rigorous test of wine theory, the practical component of the competition will test the Semi-Finalists’ knowledge of wine styles and tasting ability in the form of a blind tasting, assess their competence in making food and wine pairing recommendations as well as their ability to perform tasks of professional wine service.

The 2014 Finalists will compete in Cape Town in October this year, being judged on wine and food service and tested on wine styles and terminology, wine label information, wine regulations, regions of origin, major international wine regions and their wines, identifying wines in a blind tasting, service techniques, food and wine pairing, wine storage and social skills and ability to interact with the patron.
This year’s winner will be announced at an exclusive Champagne event in October 2014, winning the Riedel Glass Trophy and a trip to France including a visit to the prestigious House of Champagne Bollinger. Judges at all rounds of the competition include internationally trained sommeliers, Cape Wine Masters and members of the hospitality trade.

Terroir Restaurant - A Gourmet Destination The second course on the Menu was the delicious cured Lamb Belly with juniper and rosemary, braising juices, Duka and potato gnocchi paired with Kleine Zalze Cabernet Sauvignon, with its well integrated ripe prune, plum and cherry fruit providing an alluring combination of blackberries and cedar wood flavours delivering a lingering after taste perfectly complementing the meaty flavours of this dish.
Since opening its doors 10 years ago, Terroir Restaurant in Stellenbosch became one of the most sought-after gourmet destinations in the Western Cape. The restaurant consistently ranks within South Africa’s top 10 restaurants, and its ongoing success brought with it various prestigious awards. Kleine Zalze Estate created the perfect setting for the Terroir Restaurant under the historic oak trees with views over the De Zalze Golf course, surrounding gardens and vineyards - the perfect place to relax and enjoy a fine meal paired with excellent Estate wines. The Newspaper paid Terroir Restaurant one cold and rainy winters evening a visit. We were welcomed into the relaxing ambience where excellent food and friendly service was awaiting us. In the back a fireplace was adding to the pleasant atmosphere.
The Chef
Michael Broughton, the Executive Chef believes in "Classic pairings, intense depth of flavour and the characterization of the “perfect sauce” toward creating the “terroir–driven food” perfected for the futuristic guest. Added to his passion is the creation of flavours in line with wines of the region against locally sourced organic ingredients. “The proof lies in the pudding,” reflects precisely what Michael accomplishes. The many accolades is proof of the success he has achieved in balancing food with wine and giving the guests the benefit of a gastronomic experience of world standard. Grounded on classic French cooking techniques, Michael is undoubtedly a “Master” at the art of developing healthier dishes. As a Chef Michael said, "To show restraint, precision and simplicity on the plate is at the core of our food philosophy," and, "If you can’t make magic with sauce, then what’s the point? For a saucier to make the perfectly balanced sauce takes time, skill and patience.”
The Gastronomic Experience
In a relaxed atmosphere the gastronomic journey at Terroir began with a display on the “Bistro-styled chalkboard Menu” reflecting descriptive dishes paired mainly with wines from Kleine Zalze Estate. A bread plate of appetizing Tomato and Smoked olive Focaccia and sourdough rolls with salted butter was on offer while awaiting our first course. We were served a tasty Amusebouche of Gougiers cheese, pork spring rolls with sweet sauce, fish croquettes with basil crème which was paired with Kleine Zalze MCC. This full-body classical style Method Cap Classic (MCC) crafted from the finest selected parcels of the traditional grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir superbly blends with this appetiser giving great character to the flavours. We were presented with appetizing Prawn Risotto consisting of Tiger prawns with garlic lemon and chilli with sauce Americaine paired with the Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. The wine complemented the quality of the dish with its ripe fig, pea and full floral herbaceous flavours on the nose and intense complexed lime, ripe asparagus and peppery notes on the palate.
The presentation of the succulent 6 week well matured Sirloin of Angus Beef looked and tasted amazing. It was accompanied by root vegetable pate, white Bordelaise and truffle vinaigrette excellently paired with Kevin Arnold Shiraz with its multi-layered berry spice aromas and savoury, and the wild berry flavours on the nose is a splendid selection complementing the dish. The evening ended with the perfect choice of Dessert. The first selection Lemon Cheese cake with redcurrant, vanilla, almond crunch, elder flower and apple ice cream, was followed by the Citrus Tart with blood orange puree, pistachio macaroon, popcorn powder and lime with yoghurt ice cream. Both these dishes were paired with Kanu Kia-Ora. A Noble Late Harvest, with its melange of citrus, apricots, fynbos honey and toasted almond infused nougat ready on the nose to enhance that explosion onto the palate with a full, and rich mouth feel that embodies the flavours in both the Lemon Cheese cake as well as the Citrus Tart. All dishes were prepared with great detail, and was deliciously plated, reflecting outstanding quality. The Newspaper can highly recommend Terroir Restaurant for an incredible dining experience. It may be said, Terroir’s wine list offers a selection of wines, specifically selected to live up to the quality and style of its food.

Herbalicious! South African consumers are eating more fresh food every day. “Fresh raw herbs are some of the most delicious and nutrient-dense plants you can eat yet they are under-appreciated as food.” says Sue Standfield owner of gojigo in the Somerset Décor Centre, opposite the Helderberg Centre in Somerset West. “They are the easiest and most flavourful plants to eat. Toss in a bowl with the stalks, add oil, salt and pepper – and you have a delicious snack or side dish.” Standfield encourages people to buy and eat herbs like you would other veggies – in volume. “People find herbs intimidating. Once you get the hang of it, 80 grams each of 3-4 different herbs is an easy amount for an adult to consume weekly. They’re not just there to flavour the other food – they are the food.” The herbs on gojigo’s menu come from The Fresh Herb Company which sells a wide variety including rocket, basil, mint, thyme, chives, coriander, spinach, parsley, rosemary and many more. At their stop-over in Zimbabwe at the Hwange Lodge, Reuben treated the team to steak with a Sedgwick’s cream and mushroom sauce, complemented with side dishes of roasted butternut and fresh salad.

De Nieuwe Rodenburg's Butchery & Deli Today, Rodenburg’s Butchery & Deli is most definitely the oldest existing butchery still operative in the same building in the Strand. A window pane in the gable reveals that the building was built in 1927.
Their business expanded and the Rodenburgs purchased land in Gordon’s Bay for an abattoir, to provide forage to live-stock they purchased at stock-fairs in Kuilsriver and Bellville. The live-stock arrived at Strand Station by cattle-truck and two herd-boys would walk the animals to their property in Gordon’s Bay. Can you in your wildest dreams imagine a cattle-truck arriving at Strand Station today delivering cattle? They set up their own abattoir in Gordon’s Bay and employed more staff to accommodate deliveries. Three delivery men with bicycles were appointed, each to cover his own area. The business had its funny moments. It was two days before Christmas when a client called in at about 11h00 saying she had not received her Christmas meat. Another client called shortly there after with the same dilemma. To Louisa this seemed strange, what could have gone wrong? She took to the road and found the three delivery men seated under a tree drunk as skunks with all the meat deliveries still neatly packed ready for delivery. She took on the responsibility and personally delivered all the Christmas meat on time. The business also claimed its toll. In 1990 Pieter suddenly died undergoing a pacemaker implant at Groote Schuur Hospital.
During The Newspaper’s visit to Louisa Rodenburg, co-founder of Rodeburg’s Butchery & Deli with her late husband Pieter back in 1951, she takes us back to the good old days of genuine “Butchery” business. Louisa’s life changing story reflects many challenges. It was shortly after the Second World War that her brother-in-law, Jaap Rodenburg came to Cape Town on an extended holiday. He discovered a butchery in the Strand, and purchase it. At the same time, the newlyweds, Louisa and Pieter immigrated to South Africa and arrived in Cape Town on 13th March 1951. They joined up with Jaap, and took control of the business after he left for Holland to finalize his immigration documents. Jaap’s immigration application did not run the normal time, and for over a year-and-a-half he struggled to obtain the required documentation. On his return Louisa and Pieter had set up a second butchery in Fish Hoek, and Jaap took on the management thereof for only a few years before immigrating to America. Both businesses thrived. As a young man Pieter qualified as a butcher in Rotterdam, and trained in Germany in manufacturing processed meats. He brought his skills to the Strand and produced quality meat which attracted many Europeans to Rodenburg’s Butchery & Deli. Louisa says,“From all over the peninsula clients came to purchase our amazing quality products. Some even arrived from as far as Ballito in Natal, and Johannesburg, bringing along their own mobile cold storage, to purchase meat products on a regular basis.”

Pieter decided to purchase the adjacent building, but, the eighty eight year old neighbour was not keen on selling. Later she agreed to the sale provided she retains occupation at no costs for a further eight years, stating that after eight years she should no longer be around. She also insisted that the agreement be signed before a Lawyer confirming her occupation for a further eight years. Eight years passed and she was still around.
Pieter never spoke a word regarding the neighbour’s extended eleven years occupation by the neighbour. The seller passed on at the age of 99 years.

A few years later her son Dirk collapsed in the butchery office, and died instantaneously of a heart attack. The shock to Louisa was so great that she took ill and slipped into a coma for 21 days. Her daughter Diana was the only person left to run the family business. It was decided, due to her weakened condition to remove the life support, but miraculously she came out of the coma. After some time she recovered and return to the butchery. If this was not enough, she suffered the loss of her daughter Diana a few years later to cancer. Left with Mornét, her son-in-law, and two beautiful grandchildren she looks back over the many years in Rodenburg’s Butchery & Deli, and as difficult as it has been over the last years, she embraces the good times.

Today, De Nieuwe Rodenburg’s Butchery & Deli is under new management with two very skilled remaining employees left, both trained by Louisa. This time the heartbeat of the new owners is to resume the manufacturing of the brands so perfectly developed by Pieter and Louisa. These include the likes of Fleiswurst, Hollandse Rookwors, Bokwurst, Jagtwurst, Bierwurst, and Parma Ham, to mention a few popular European meats, as well as Salami’s, Ham & Tongue, Polonies, Gammon rolls, Roast Beef, and many more. The butchery now also specializes in a wide range of smoked products and fresh meat. The new owners of Rodenburg’s Butchery & Deli’s have made many changes to date. Notwithstanding, their aim is not only to upgrade the Butchery and Deli, but also, to bring back the yesteryear’s love for the processing of meat products so neatly secured by Pieter and Louisa. The challenges are great, yet, they are set in their goal to cater for every client’s need. Do yourself a favour and visit the butchery on Saturdays were yesterday’s traditional butchery feeling meet today’s modern times.

Seven years ago the Serfonteins sold their business and smallholding in Pretoria. Chris, an attorney, and Mariana, a radiographer left their field of expertise and bungee jumped into olive farming and pottery on a small farm in Schoemanshoek, between Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves. Cape Winelands Tourism Expo Update! Marinda Holtzhausen from Socially Unforgettable initiated the Cape Winelands Tourism Expo (CWTE) project as part of the Stellenbosch Chapter of the Cape Town Chamber of Commerce as she felt there was a need within the Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) Tourism market for more tourism information. The purpose of the CWTE is to empower SMME Tourism product owners, to maximize income potential, connect local and global buyers with SMME Tourism product owners, promote cultural and community tourism, interaction between products, communities and destinations and to provide support after the event to implement strategies to ensure sustainability. The the first tourism sessions was held on 26-27 June at Stellenbosch Lodge featuring social media workshops with
one of the highlights being the Million Trees project by the Municipality of Stellenbosch. The initiative of the project is to plant 1 million trees all around the Stellenbosch area with the main focus of this project to make the townships as well as other informal settlements green, promote sustainable living, act against global warming, beautification of the areas around Stellenbosch, care for the environment and create job opportunities. The next workshop sessions on 21-22 July included valuable presentations from Cape Town Tourism, Sure Travel, Chakela, Stellenbosch Heritage Festival, Tri Active Events Management and a Responsible Tourism workshop by Heidi van der Watt. The last tourism workshops will be held on 25-26 August with the conclusion of a two-day Tourism Trade Expo on 2-3

Birkett & Adie steal show at Berg 2014 Going into the final stage with just ten seconds between himself and Solomon, Birkett had to dig deep to hold off the vastly experienced bamboo Warehouse paddler despite hurting tremendously. We’ve spent so much time in the boat and 240km is a long, long way but I am so chuffed to have pulled off the win and I never expected it at all,” the visibly exhausted EuroSteel athlete said. "It feels amazing, it is a really tough four days of racing and I was fortunate enough to find myself in a group of nice paddlers every day and we had some good, clean racing out there.” Birkett’s intentions when he arrived in Paarl was to use the race as base training for his trip to the Canoe Marathon World Championships later in the year and so, with little to no preparation in Paarl, he was happy with his efforts over the past five days. With the intention on bettering his eighth place in the 2013 Berg River Canoe Marathon, 62-year-old grandmaster Lee McGregor had to settle for another eighth place overall at the 2014 event. In what was one of the most exciting men’s races at the Berg River Canoe Marathon in a number of years, novice Andy Birkett managed to hold off Western Cape ace Graeme Solomon to claim his maiden Berg title with Abby Adie storming to a convincing win in the ladies race as she crossed the line in Velddrif on 19 July.
The women’s race was fairly cut-and-dry going into the final 58km’s from Zoutkloof to Velddrif and there were no surprises with best 4 Healthcare/Kayak Centre star Abby Adie cruising to a 50 minute victory over Bianca Beavitt. It was Beavitt and Adie’s twin sister Alex who rounded out the podium in the ladies race as a slender overnight gap grew on the last day with Beavitt taking advantage of some ill-fortune for Adie to take second place comfortably in the end.
Elana Meyer - Ambassador for Cape Town Marathon As an Olympic-medallist and repeat world record-holder, Elana Meyer is one of South Africa’s most outstanding and most celebrated sporting personalities. In the gruelling, highly competitive field of long-distance running, Elana paved a brilliant, enduring, elite athletic career; and she continues today, to make an indelible impact on the sport. South Africa’s sporting isolation ended in the early 1990’s, opening up the world stage of endurance running for Elana. The 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, South Africa’s first Olympic Games since 1960, would yield one of most defining moments of Elana’s early career. She was the country’s best hope for bringing home a medal, and South Africa was not to be disappointed as Elana won a silver Olympic medal. Over the next 13 years, Elana established an astonishing, winning track record. Between 1991 and 1992, she had achieved an unprecedented streak of 51 straight victories, a world-first
in the history of women’s endurance running set 23 South African records, broke five world records, and in her very first race as a veteran, established a world record. After an exemplary career, Elana retired as a global elite athlete in 2005, and embarked on a second vocation that would enable her to give back to her country at the highest level. She cofounded, and served as Chief Executive Officer of non-profit organisation, the JAG Sports and Education Foundation where she provided a positive role model promoting physical health, emotional well-being and personal achievement in high risk communities through sports and education programmes for children and youth. In 2013, Elana co-founded ENDUROCAD, Africa’s first sports academy dedicated to developing young South African talent into elite, global endurance athletes. She has recently teamed up with South African rugby icon,
