Spier Supports The Launch of The Wine Industry's First Black-Owned, Independent Wine Lab Former Spier employee, Merecia Smith, has launched WAS Laboratory, the Western Cape’s first black-owned wine analysis laboratory. Merecia joined Spier in 1998 as a general worker and first started working in the wine analysis laboratory four years later. Her hard work and accuracy saw her rise through the ranks, from being an assistant to ultimately becoming the lab’s manager in 2018. With Spier’s support, Merecia launched her business, Wine Analytical Services (WASLab) in July 2019. Through financial support, mentoring and purchasing guarantees, Spier has long assisted former employees to develop their own thriving, independent micro-enterprises. Other examples include Lingomso Caterers who runs the staff canteen, Mountainview Tank Services, a bulk wine transport service and Primo Vino Packaging and Reworks, which customises and repackages wine bottles. Developing entrepreneurs forms part of Spier’s Growing for Good initiatives that empower communities to create positive social and environmental change.

WORLD’S LONGEST OVER-OCEAN ZIPLINE OPENS IN MOSSEL BAY

“I really enjoy doing analysis – it’s satisfying knowing that I’m helping to make good wine even better,” says Merecia. “The winemakers trust us – they know they can sleep soundly because the analysis is in good hands.”

If being strapped in a harness, hooked up to a long pulley, and flying through the air at up to 80km an hour sounds like your idea of a good time - then you are going to love the Mossel Bay Zipline. The moment many adrenaline junkies have been waiting for finally arrived on 25 January 2020, when Mossel Bay officially launched the world’s longest over-ocean zipline. The Garden Route, already known for its adventure activities such as the Bloukrans Bungy and the Otter Trail will attract tourists and locals to experience the Mossel Bay Zipline as they glide over the beautiful ocean in the Southern Cape harbour town of Mossel Bay. The Mossel Bay Zipline is 1,1km long, making it the longest over-ocean zipline on earth. If you can bring yourself to keeping your eyes open as you fly over the sea, the scenes you’ll experience are unparalleled with unspoilt views of the

cliffs, ocean and sea life - all from the comfort of a harness, high up in the air. The zipline, has been described as 1,1km of screaming fun and runs from the cliffs below Point High School to the deck of the current (Shark Lab) aquarium. But it’s not just the length that the Mossel Bay’s zipline is setting the bar on, the line can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h! The zipline was approved for construction by the Mossel Bay Municipality in 2017. SA Forest Adventures, the company behind some of the most adrenaline-inducing activities in the country, partnered with Mossel Bay Zipline to bring the longest over-ocean zipline in the world to the Western Cape. According to Mossel Bay Zipline, “To built one of the world’s top ziplines took years and months of meticulous planning, not to mention the amount of funds needed for such a venture.”

Merecia’s laboratory plays a crucial role in the winemaking process. Through the nearly 20 tests performed routinely on wine samples, the lab results provide vital scientific information (such as levels of acidity, alcohol and sugar) that enables the winemakers to make informed decisions on whether they should make adjustments to the wine. For example, the test results will help them decide whether they should add more sulphur or whether the wine needs more filtration to achieve greater clarity. “Tests of sugar, pH and total acidity on grapes also help our winemakers figure out when vineyards are ready for harvest.”

SPORT & WELLNESS Page 12

During harvest, she will analyse up to 500 samples a month; in a quieter one, she sees about 250. All of this is done by hand using a range of high-tech equipment, such as the Mettler Toledo Autotitrator DL22, the spectrophotometer and the refractometer. Merecia uses her newly acquired density meter to test alcohol levels (as well as the wine’s specific gravity). Previously, alcohol testing was a laborious process that took her about two hours. The new equipment can give results in as fast as five minutes. Merecia says the key qualities to ensure a high-performing lab is to be accurate, reliable, trustworthy and honest. Speed is valued too – at the busiest times of year, she’s often expected to return results within a single day. Her lab participates in monthly analyses organised by the SA Wine Lab Association where she is required to evaluate two unknown samples and submit the results for checking by industry peers. She is proud that her most recent results all scored As and Bs for accuracy. “Having this external evaluation of the quality of our services is important – it gives us credibility and shows that we are doing a good job,” she says. “Initially I found the idea of leaving full-time employment to launch my own business rather intimidating. But I felt reassured by the support Spier was willing to offer me to help get my business off the ground,” Merecia says. Spier provides WAS Laboratory with accounting and administrative services, allowing Merecia to focus on her lab work. Over the next few years, mentoring from Spier staff will help her to gain the business know-how she needs to operate independently. Now that she’s hit her stride with Spier as her main client, Merecia is already looking to grow her business by bringing on new customers. With the help of a consultant, she’s approaching small cellars nearby; she hopes that other businesses will begin using her services. With more work, she would be able to expand her team and continue to grow her business. Spier Growing For Good invests in projects that empowers our communities to make a positive social and environmental change.

Walking The Talk To Grow The Clothing And Fashion Industry The clothing and textile industry is currently experiencing an emerging global trend known as ‘fast fashion’ that favours the speed at which goods can be brought to market, which is preferred over cheap goods. This trend coupled with the rise of the ethically-minded consumer has created new opportunities in the clothing and textiles industry in South Africa. Cape Town, with its strong retailer presence, is perhaps the best placed domestic city to adapt to these trends and to lead the revival of this important industry.” “I welcomed the opportunity to attend the Fashion Graduate Recruitment Showcase (FGRS) hosted by the Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC). The programme is designed to create a platform for young up and coming talent in the Clothing and Textile industry. “The showcase provides a platform to connect prospective employers with young fashion graduates. As part of the showcase, South Africa’s top graduates are curated by an expert industry panel, based on a set of criteria. The City supports this programme that is designed to create a platform for young up and coming talent in the industry. It has previously seen participating candidates being employed into entry-level positions,” said Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management. The clothing and textile industry continues to be a major employer in the Cape Town economy, employing 24 330 individuals – the second largest employer within the manufacturing sector.

“As a City, we are committed to supporting the Clothing and Textile Sector by providing grant funding to strategic business partners dedicated to the growth of the industry. Cape Town’s clothing and textile industry is also well served by organisations such as the Cape Clothing and Textile Cluster, Clotex, and the Cape Town Fashion Council.” The funding of these organisations goes towards programmes that cater for training, upskilling and cross-skilling, internships and placement as well as the sector promotion and development, among a host of other initiatives.

“We do this because the Clothing and Fashion Design sector is a major employer and contributor to the Cape Town economy. The main aim is to eventually make Cape Town the go-to city for fashion and design on the continent and beyond because we have what it takes as a City to be the best in the world,” added Alderman Vos.

Virgin Atlantic Returns to Cape Town “Once again Air Access has proved that expanding air connectivity can expand opportunity for people, and expanding opportunity for people, can give hope to people by creating jobs in the Western Cape.” Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management within the City of Cape Town, added: “The aviation economy is a key driver of growth through tourism and trade. I therefore welcome any increase in connections between South Africa and other destinations. What is really exciting is the opportunity to attract more business and leisure travellers to our beautiful city. To grow the aviation economy, the City provides funding to the Air Access initiative which is mandated to expand current flight routes and to secure new routes to boost tourism and trade. We will continue to build on these successes by working with industries and strategic partners to invest in projects and programmes that will drive demand and make business sense.”

Cape Town Air Access is proud to announce the direct route from London Heathrow to Cape Town with Virgin Atlantic. The seasonal service will commence from October 2020 onwards. Liezl Gericke, Head of Africa, Middle East and India, at Virgin Atlantic commented: “I am thrilled of the reintroduction of this popular route; it will make it even easier for our customers to travel for business and leisure between South Africa and the United Kingdom – as well as creating additional cargo capacity for the route. The daily service will not only enhance a vital link between Cape Town and the UK’s capital, but it also provides seamless connections via Heathrow to Europe and North America.” Cape Town Air Access is a partnership between Wesgro, the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Government, Airports Company of South Africa, Cape Town Tourism and South African Tourism, and is the focal point for international air route development in the Western Cape. “A warm welcome back to Virgin Atlantic and its connection to London Heathrow. The UK is the top market for Cape Town and the Western Cape, in terms of both trade and travel, so this addition to the Cape Town air route network will only serve to strengthen business and tourism between the regions”, said Tim Harris, CEO of Wesgro. David Maynier, Western Cape Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, said: “We welcome the announcement of the new route between London Heathrow to Cape Town so that more people can experience the best that Cape Town and the Western Cape have to offer.”

Deon Cloete, General Manager of Cape Town International Airport, said: “This is a prime route and will no doubt be very popular, especially given the frequency of the connection. This connection will help to create a more competitive environment which will improve the value proposition for passengers from a pricing and product perspective - having choice is always good news! We will look forward to welcoming Virgin Atlantic to Cape Town and will play our part in ensuring a smooth start up at the airport. Well done to the Air Access team on these excellent results - we remain proud of this dynamic partnership!” This increased air access will also make a significant impact on jobs and growth as 3 000 jobs are supported by each regularly scheduled long-haul flight, and for every 10% increase in passenger numbers the regional economy grows by 2%.

FIND THE SPARK… FEED THE FIRE. AT KAMERS/MAKERS As SA’s original artisan ‘up’-market, KAMERS/Makers showcases all things local, proudly handmade and creative. “2020 is our Year of The Maker – we’re celebrating the magical spark of creativity that drives certain people to do things differently. And in particular, how that ‘spark’ finds its physical expression through the hands of the Maker in objects that surprise, delight and enrich us.” This is the core of what has made the KAMERS/Makers shows so very popular in South Africa - bringing that spark of Maker creativity onto a stage where everyone can share, celebrate and ultimately, take home their own spark of proudly local inspiration. “Indeed many of our current Makers started their own artisan journeys as visitors to our shows… Inspired or challenged by a product they saw, they found their own spark and nurtured it to the point where they’re now successful creative entrepreneurs. So 2020, for us, is the year of MAKE… a choice, a plan, a difference. MAKE your mark, MAKE it happen, MAKE it count… but make something!” “And speaking of making a difference – our great partnership with Consol Glass continues in 2020 where we will be launching further initiatives pushing our sustainability even further. We have to date given away 75,000 Curvy glass water bottles, and filled those with almost 60,000L of BlueWater purified drinking water. This means a staggering 160,000+ plastic bottles have been saved from ending up in SA landfills.” “This year we will be launching yet more brand new artisans onto the SA stage - with dozens of inspiring new Makers at every show – ensuring that KAMERS/ Makers remains… The coolest stuff you’ve never seen.” “Our 5 shows for 2020 begin, as always in the heart of Cape Town where we return to Jan Van Riebeeck High School, under the cloth of Table Mountain on uber cool Kloof Street from 26-29 March 2020.” “Then it’s on to Sandton for the first 2020 Gauteng show at St David’s Marist College Inanda – where last year we broke all records for our Jozi shows. Show dates 23-27 April.”

Photo: Kamers/Makers - Photo Credit: Charl Du Preez

Each show features 100 - 200 Maker-entrepreneurs, handpicked for their unique creative flair. The shows boast a wide selection of beautiful objects, stylish fashion, decor, gifts, foodie delights, treats, drinks and so much more. “We will be back in Joburg for a Spring show in late August, following the success of our first Spring show last year… and then it’s on to beautiful Blaauwklippen in Stellenbosch end October, before we close the year, as always, in Irene, Pretoria early December.” For more information visit www.kamers.co.za

Budbreak to bottle – Samarie Smith Let’s talk about fermented grape juice; or fermenting grape juice if you take a snapshot of the wine harvest currently in motion. Because at the end of the day, that is what wine is, right? The aim is to get the best quality grape juice with the right amount of sugar that will convert into the right amount of alcohol during the fermentation process leaving just enough acidity to preserve the wine and to put the fruit on a pedestal. A grape consists out of stems, pips, pulp, the bloom and the skins. The pulp contains the water, sugar and acid; the seeds contain bitter tannins that are best avoided; the skin is the main source of flavour, colour and tannin and the bloom is the waxy outer surface that contains natural yeasts to contribute to the final product. The art is to map out the journey of these components and to manifest the desired style step by step. If you thought this grape juice is magically transformed into wine, you have to keep all those tricksters in mind that is added to transform it into bright and seamless beauties. Here are a few to remember - Sulphur dioxide: Don’t hate sulphur. In measured quantities, this will protect the wine and act as an anti-oxidant. The winemaker will use oxygen as a stylistic parameter but too much exposure to oxygen can spoil the wine and bereft it of intricate fruit flavours. People who have had adverse reactions to sulphites should know that by law these levels are strictly scrutinized and far lower than what is used in dried fruit. Tannin and acid: No-one are perfect and the best wines can do with a swig of acid or a dust of tannin to complete the overall mouthfeel and texture. Albeit grape tannin naturally comes from the skin, stems and seeds, many winemakers will chisel the end result with added tannins or an acid lift to balance the components. Clarifying agents: Everyone (or at least most of us) desire a clear, bright wine in the glass. Like any beauty ritual, there are a whole bunch of agents to choose from to achieve the desired effect. Amongst many, this can include egg white (literally), bentonite (clay), Isinglass (a kind of fish-gelatine) and gelatin. Samarie Smith is a certified winetaster, spreading the wine gospel drop by drop.

GREAT WHITE SHARK FINALLY SPOTTED AT DYER ISLAND Seeing a Great White Shark in the Western Cape is something of a rarity these days and for over the past year, and much has been said about the disappearance of these creatures in our waters. Many have speculated that their scarcity is due to Orcas that are known to hunt the Great Whites, but the reasons remain unknown to us why they are so scarce in Cape waters. On 17 February - “A surprise was lurking in the bay for the Marine Dynamics team and guests in the form of a stunning Great White shark. This happened to be a very well known shark in the Gansbaai area going by the nickname Mini Nemo. This male is one we have documented yearly since 2012. During the time we have seen this shark he has become a favourite for crew, volunteers and guests lucky enough to meet him.” “He is one of the ten Dyer Island Conservation Trusts (DICT) Iconic Great White sharks that has been sponsored by some of our visitors. Welcome back to the bay Mini Nemo.”

INNOVATIVE FINANCING

CITY PREPARING FOR FUTURE

SOLUTIONS IN AN EVER-CHANGING ENERGY LANDSCAPE

ENERGY PURCHASES FROM INDEPENDENT POWER PRODUCERS

The world is rapidly moving towards sustainable sources of energy and renewable energy is at the forefront of this evolution. The demand for renewable energy technologies has skyrocketed globally. Africa’s abundant renewable energy resources including hydro, solar and wind have been adapted to the growing demand with innovative off-grid solutions.

The City of Cape Town’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato, cautiously welcomes the firmest commitment to date given by President Ramaphosa in his State of the Nation speech that would enable municipalities in good standing, such as the City of Cape Town, to buy energy from independent producers in future.

More notably, there has been considerable advancement in new energy storage solutions that integrate storage technologies with renewable sources of energy to power rural areas and industry. Going forward, the continent will move towards innovating new ways to augment renewable energy with gas generation. As these new technologies take over Africa’s energy landscape, innovative financing will play a monumental role in dictating the future of the energy sector to meet the continent’s long-term sustainability objectives.

The City has been putting pressure on National Government for many years to reshape the energy regime in South Africa to the benefit of our people and businesses. “Now we need urgent clarity from National Government on the roles and responsibilities for municipalities and other stakeholders in terms of the New Generation Capacity Regulations in the Electricity Regulation Act.” What sort of independent sources would the City look at? - The City will first need to complete a City-developed Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to best optimise the supply and demand options. “We are working with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research about the production of such an IRP. We are also working with the Western Cape Government and GreenCape, to look at several game changers that, from an energy perspective.” “On the supply side: We would consider all available and acceptable options at different stages of our future procurement. In principle, we’d look more toward renewable energy technologies that support a transition to a lower carbon future. We will then look at demand side management options such as ripple control, demand response measures such as aggregation of standby gensets (for standby power supply), solar water heating, etc.” What needs to happen for a new energy future to become a reality? - The current Electricity Regulation Act is the contentious act that allows the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy to prescribe the amount and type of new generation.

According to the International Energy Agency, over 600 million people in Africa have no access to electricity and 80% of these people live in rural areas. The World Bank estimates that a USD 43 billion annual investment is required to fund the energy infrastructure in Africa. International initiatives such as Sustainable Energy for All are pushing for innovative financing to meet the rising demands and building a clean energy infrastructure around the world. These innovative techniques can leverage capital for the development of accessible renewable energy in areas where renewable energy is more important than ever before. However, the question remains: How can the African continent find the required finances to meet the rising demand, while achieving sustainable development goals and making energy more accessible for all? African nations can start by adequately defining their energy needs to ultimately meet their long-term energy objectives. To acquire the appropriate funding, countries need to create long-term plans and visions that guide the acquisition of funds. Furthermore, it becomes necessary to create renewable energy projects that are optimized for maximum profit and success. This is essential for attracting both investors and financing entities. Governments need to take the lead with a clear renewable energy agenda that drives suppliers to devise innovative projects and solutions. In addition to outside investment, existing financial resources are required to be effectually utilized in order to eliminate inefficiencies in power generation. An important component of this premise is employing the private sector for creating investment opportunities. Key players from private and public sectors can partner up to generate new opportunities for channelling investment through the private sector. Nations across the continent are expected to meet internationally recognised standards with adequate environment safeguards to qualify for international funding opportunities. Development of innovative renewable solutions will allow Africa to meet sustainable development goals and to honor the 2015 Paris Agreement of climate change. As traditional power generation becomes more expensive by the day and resources deplete, renewable energy represents the ideal alternative to fulfill the growing energy needs of the continent. As the demand rises for making renewable energy more accessible, the Africa Energy Indaba conference discussions are set to underscore various new avenues for innovative financing to steer Africa’s ever-changing energy landscape towards sustainability.

We have contended that it is the City’s constitutional mandate to provide power to its customers, allowing those customers to choose the type of power they receive. The current National Integrated Resource Plan and the issuing of a Ministerial Determination in favour of the municipalities will assist.

Clarity is now required in terms of roles and responsibilities. The court case, set to be heard in May 2020, will ask the Court for a declaratory order that sets aside the status quo and clarifies the legal responsibilities and parameters required for the power, so to speak, to be put back in the hands of municipalities. What could the energy mix be in future? - The City-developed IRP will define this and will be in line with the City’s Integrated Development Plan and international commitments such as carbon neutrality of buildings by 2050. When could we start actually seeing procurement happening? - It depends on the legal clarification and also the lead time to construction varies by technology type. At a minimum, if the decision is favourable, it will bring new power plants on line in three years’ time. What are we working on in terms of energy equality for lower income households in terms of renewables? - We are undertaking a study to determine how best to overcome energy poverty, through various projects such as installing solar kits, solar home systems, increasing free basic electricity, improving access to gas, among others. What other work has the City done while awaiting a National Government decision on diversification of energy supply? - “We are developing a City IRP. We are in discussions with National Treasury on, among others, how to set up a future City Independent Power Purchase office, and We are preparing for our court case to get legal clarity so that we can all move forward.”

BRITISH AIRWAYS BOOSTS CAPE TOWN TOURIST SEASON FREQUENCIES British Airways is increasing its services between London and Cape Town by two flights a week from January next year. The additional services will operate from Gatwick using Boeing 777-200 aircraft in a three-cabin configuration with 32 seats in Club World, 52 in World Traveller Plus and 252 in World Traveller.

This will bring to five the number of flights British Airways operates from Gatwick to Cape Town and increases its total number of flights between London and the Mother City to 19 a week. Over the peak South African summer (IATA winter) British Airways also doubles its schedule between Heathrow to Cape Town, offering two daily Boeing 747 services, with four cabins, including First. “In total we’ll be offering 36 flights a week between the UK and South Africa. In addition to the 19 Cape Town services, we also fly double-daily to Johannesburg using our largest aircraft, the A380. We also fly directly between London and Durban three times a week,” says Cristina Graham, British Airways corporate commercial manager for Southern Africa. British Airways is the only airline to offer year-round direct services between London and the Mother City. The schedule increase comes as British Airways rolls out a £6.5 billion, five-year customer investment plan. As well as taking delivery of 73 new aircraft, it is also refurbishing its long-haul cabins, so they look and feel new. This includes the Boeing 777 fleet at London Gatwick, which has the new-generation World Traveller and World Traveller Plus seats. It has also significantly refurbished its lounge at OR Tambo, redesigning it so it can comfortably host 247 customers and with a dedicated boutique dining space for First customers.

The additional flights between Gatwick and Cape Town will operate from 10 January 2021 until 24 March 2021. As always, members of the British Airways Executive Club can earn Avios on their British Airways booking.

SA’s first, fully integrated, mixed-income housing development launches South Africa’s first, fully integrated, mixed-income, mixed-use development, aimed at reversing apartheid spatial planning and located near Cape Town’s CBD, has been launched for sale to the public. The revolutionary 22ha community comprises over 3 500 homes – some subsidised or grant funded, the remainder for sale on the open market from about R950 000 including transfer costs. Phase one, comprising 99 units and called Kirstenbosch, has been launched with the public keen to be part of a “connected, multi-cultural community, marked by affordability, sustainability and security,” says founder of Realtor of Excellence, Toni Enderli. Occupation is set for early 2021 while phase two will launch soon. Conradie’s head of sales, Wayne Lawson, says the development is an incubator for growth and evolution: “It’s aspirational – by connecting various groups, those renting subsidised housing will be inspired to buy subsidised properties. Subsidised home owners will in turn strive to buy their first house on the open market. The model provides social and financial support for this.” The historic project is a partnership between developers, Concor, and the Western Cape Government which describes it as one of seven provincial “game changers” aimed at providing affordable housing close to jobs while redressing apartheid-era spatial challenges. Concor project leader, Mark Schonrock, said the model showed how state-owned land could be unlocked to boost economic growth while providing mixed-income housing in one neighbourhood. Located near main arterial routes and the Mutual and Thornton railway stations, the project includes a long-term transport master plan, potential new MyCity routes and significant road upgrades. Schonrock said the R3-bn project will stimulate small business growth by providing 10 000m² of retail and, initially, 14 500m² of commercial space – all designed by architects dhk and Jakupa. Over 2 000 jobs will be created during the construction phase, added Schonrock. The campus includes two schools, various creches, a business hotel, an urban gym and extensive pet-friendly parks. Foot and cycling paths are part of an integrated non-motorised transport plan while green technology has been applied to energy, water and waste management.

Get all the tools you need to reach your property goals, from top industry professionals! The Property Show, organised by Private Property, is the ideal platform for anyone looking to further their property journey whether it’s buying, selling, renting or investing. Taking place from 21 - 22 March at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), the show brings together the biggest real estate brands under one roof including financial service providers, estate agents, developers, conveyancers and additional services.

“We’re essentially building a new, affordable, sustainable, self-contained town for the future characterised by integration, connection and inspiration. It’s a first, and the public is embracing the vision and its potential to help address the country’s housing challenges,” added Schonrock.

Financially savvy millennials favouring the savings of mixed-use lifestyles

The mixed-use precinct boom is being experienced in economic hubs and principal cities around the world, with much growth in this sector being attributed to shifts in buyer sentiment towards value and affordability. With further tepid growth forecast for 2020, personal and household finances for the majority of South Africans are likely to remain under pressure for a considerable time yet. According to the 2019 Deloitte Global Millennial Survey, 67% of millennials in South Africa have an ambition to buy a home of their own. Figures released by property information providers, Lightstone Property, indicate that millennials face paying up to three times more on their first home than those of Generation X, owing to significant increases in living costs and inflation over the past two decades. This, coupled with unpredictable global and local economics, as well as rising unemployment figures have made it difficult for millennials to get a foot on the property ladder. However, those who take a holistic approach to their finances when hunting for property are gravitating towards homes in mixed-use precincts, particularly in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Affordability, value and cost-saving measures in terms of utilities, maintenance and transport are proving to be top of mind for most buyers, particularly those within the millennial generation. The Amdec Group’s Harbour Arch development, currently under construction in Cape Town, has seen 90% of its 432 residential units sold already, equating to R1.3 billion in sales. Nicholas Stopforth, Director of Amdec Property Developments, believes that cost-conscious millennials are becoming more discerning about where they choose to invest, in terms of location, overheads, amenities and lifestyle offerings. “The millennial generation is renowned for being risk averse, so they’re more likely to steer clear of pre-owned properties that typically carry the 'Voetstoots' clause.”

What to expect at the show? The Property Show is aimed at anyone looking to buy their first home, sell a property, interested in renting or looking to expand their property investment portfolio. The show brings together all the industry role players under one roof – including you on your property journey. Are you a first-time buyer? Buying your first home can be an overwhelming experience, and putting all your hard earned money into something that you are uncertain about is a daunting thought. Listen to the best advice from industry experts, ask questions, and shop for the best deals. Are you looking to sell your lot? Speak to the agents about your property and the process of putting it on the market. Are you looking for a place to rent? The rental theatre will also cover topics such as avoiding eviction and your rights as a tenant to provide you with all the knowledge you need when signing a lease agreement. Are you looking to expand your property investment portfolio? Meet, compare and consider multiple options under one roof at the show. Browsing the exhibition will present opportunities to chat directly with the developers and the leading Estate Agents. A 2 day program packed with 50+ talks by 24 property experts, across our 4 theatres. Educational talks by industry experts providing you with the property knowledge you need to take your first/next step on the property ladder. The theatre content is geared towards buyers, sellers, tenants & investors.. For more information visit www.thepropertyshow.co.za

“Millennials recognise the false economy of buying homes in affordable suburbs away from the city, as their personal budgets are consumed by additional travel, maintenance and security costs,” says Stopforth. “Savvy buyers and investors are increasingly aware that a higher initial outlay is quickly offset against savings in fuel and utility costs over time. New urban precincts are not only appealing to millennials, whose sensibilities tend to lean towards ‘sharing’ economies, but also to more affluent homeowners looking to downsize to smaller shared environments with superior amenities within walking distances of their homes.” “Living within a pedestrianized live-work-play precinct, where all your needs are met within walking distance of your home, along with the benefits of a safe and secure, connected and sociable, lock up and go lifestyle presents a compelling value proposition that more and more South Africans are waking up to,” he said. Despite concerns among analysts that 2020 is set to be a challenging year for the property sector, owing to a sluggish economy, load shedding and muted foreign investment, most agree that the 2019 trend of investing in smaller homes in secure, walkable, convenient mixed-use precincts is set to continue into the foreseeable future.

CONGRATULATES TO SPRINGBOKS ON PRESTIGIOUS LAUREUS AWARD The Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok team of 2019 added another fantastic award to their impressive list of recent accolades when they scooped the prestigious Laureus Team of the Year Award in Berlin recently. The South African national rugby team pipped an illustrious list of top international sporting teams to lift the award in the German capital. It’s the second time the Springboks have won the Laureus accolade – the team that lifted the 2007 Rugby World Cup were awarded the prize in early 2008. English football giants Liverpool were also in the running after clinching the Champions League crown, as well as the US Women’s Football Team (Women’s World Cup winners), Mercedes-AMG Petronas (for winning the Formula One constructors’ title), the Toronto Raptors (first Canadian team to claim the NBA Championship) and the Spanish Men’s Basketball team (World Cup winners). The memory of Siya Kolisi lifting the Webb Ellis Cup in Yokohama last November was an iconic moment in sport and the audience in the Verti Halle in Berlin applauded the emotional moment when Kolisi led six of the team members on stage to receive the Laureus Statuette. The team’s victory united communities in South Africa and was proof of sport’s ability to change the world. With Rassie Erasmus at the coaching helm and Kolisi’s inspirational captaincy, the Springboks won the 2019 RWC title convincingly and also cleaned up at the World Rugby Awards in Japan shortly thereafter. “We are absolutely bursting with pride and would like to congratulate Rassie, Siya and the Springbok team, as well as the management for receiving this fantastic award,” said SA Rugby President Mr Mark Alexander. “They were so heroic on the field and through their excellent off-field conduct, they were true examples of excellent South African ambassadors. Our country can be very proud of this team and what they have accomplished in such a short space of time. They made an amazing turn-around to establish the Springboks once more as a major force in world sport. On behalf of SA Rugby, I would like to congratulate the entire Springbok team and management on this fantastic accomplishment. We saw how powerful a successful Springbok team can be, uniting South Africans from all walks of life, and we are immensely proud of their achievements.”

EDITION #75

stories that are life changing

The mother of all decor shows comes to Cape Town!

Following hotly on the heels of Decorex Durban, the Cape Town leg of Decorex Africa is set to captivate the Mother City from 30 April to 3 May 2020 when it takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). Decorex Africa, the continent’s biggest décor, design and lifestyle exhibition, is always highly anticipated – and we can’t wait for the second instalment of this prestigious event in 2020, which showcases the latest products and trends from top designers, décor professionals and industry experts. The theme for Decorex Africa 2020 is ‘Lifestyle by Design’, an embracive approach that allows you to design your life the way you want it to be. Lifestyle by Design is about freedom, reclaiming your time and doing things you like. According to Decorex Africa’s Creative Director Anita Bloom, who fastened on this year’s theme: “Design is the essence of life and speaks to our collective search for the things that bring us essential happiness. Through our constantly changing lifestyles and the urge to create sanctuaries in our home spaces, we find those moments of calm and empowerment, as well as optimism and luxury. Beauty needs space to flourish, and Decorex presents a canvas onto which exquisite design is curated, celebrated and experienced.” Visitors to Decorex Cape Town will find this year’s theme amply illustrated by a wide range of fabulous all-new feature installations that talk to the latest trends and are set to inject the show with a crisp sense of newness. Decorex Cape Town is placing a single creative in the Designer Spotlight for 2020 – Ernst H Interiors. This furniture and interior design studio will showcase sophisticated designer-maker solutions. Other featured designers will showcase their talents in the Designer Pavilion, a dynamic installation featuring the work of local Capetonian designers and their interpretation of the show’s theme ‘Lifestyle by Design’. “The Decorex Cape Town programme presents a range of new, exciting installations that engage with global trends within an African context,” explains Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Reed Exhibitions. “Top designers, manufacturers and suppliers will share their take on current trends, interpreting what Lifestyle by Design is all about.” After this stimulating array of #inspo and solutions that will allow you to design your home the way you want it to be, you can recharge at the many cafés, bars and restaurants on site.

Expect locally sourced ingredients, internationally acclaimed wines, local craft beers and so much more! There’ll also be a market at the event for the duration of the show. As ever, Decorex Cape Town will provide a powerhouse of inspiration for the interior design, décor and architectural industries and is hosting a special trade-focused day on 30 April 2020. Members of the profession will receive complimentary trade access to the show if they register online ahead of the event. Trade professionals who do not pre-register online will be able to purchase trade access tickets at the gate at a reduced rate. Don’t miss out on the ultimate Lifestyle by Design experience – book your tickets for Decorex Cape Town 2020 now!
