WESTERN CAPE
What's Inside
This Month's Edition?
LEADING THE CHARGE TO ECONOMIC GROWTH
The Western Cape’s hospitality, tourism and events sectors are among the industries leading the charge in the province’s economic recovery.
From our restaurants to our picturesque towns, it is clear that Cape Town and the Western Cape offer both international visitors and residents an array of top-class experiences.
This is shown by recent accolades awarded to Cape Town International Airport, some of the Western Cape’s best restaurants, and the town of Franschhoek recently made it onto Time Magazine’s list of “World’s Greatest Places” for 2022.
The latest accolade was presented to Cape Town’s Fyn Restaurant, which cooked itself to 37th place in the auspicious “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list. The very same list also featured the renowned La Colombe, also in Cape Town, and Paternoster’s Wolfgat restaurants continue to rack up awards, having joined Fyn on the same prestigious list.
These impressive accolades put the spotlight on the Western Cape’s world-class hospitality and tourism sectors, serving as drawcards for international and domestic visitors. Our blues skies, temperate climate, and some of the best restaurants in the world add to the many attractions on offer.
Cape Town International Airport also continues to impress. Last month, it was once again ranked the best in Africa for the 7th consecutive year, in the 2022 Skytrax World Airport Awards. Continue Reading Page 3

The Trial’s End Bike Hotel in Grabouw was established in the year of the 200th anniversary of the invention of the bicycle, and it is therefore appropriate that this picturesque country hotel should host a bicycle museum. A small team comprising the owner of the hotel, Pieter Silberbauer, his daughter Bianca, ex-Springbok cyclist Shaun Forster and museum designer, Mike Bruton, have put the museum together in record time, and it is scheduled to open to the public in early October 2022. A highlight of the development phase of the museum was the visit by the Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities in the Western Cape on Thursday, 21 July 2022 together with an entourage from her department and from WESGRO. When they entered the first gallery, their reaction was “Wow!” as they were confronted by a unique display of a bicycle drawn by one of Leonardo da Vinci’s apprentices in 1534 and a full-size replica of the first bicycle made in 1816.

DIGITAL EDITION There were further exclamations as the visitors viewed the penny-farthings with their absurdly large front wheels and heard from museum curator, Mike Bruton, that there are only three difficulties riding a penny-farthing – getting on, riding, and getting off. They were also stunned by the displays of innovative early safety bikes from the 1890s onwards, which included sleek road racers with wooden handlebars, shaft-driven bikes, high-framed Dursley-Pedersens, and elegant ‘Victor’ and ‘Victoria’ bikes from the USA. The tour of Gallery I ended with a spectacular display on ‘Bikes at War’, Black activist Sol Plaatje’s epic bike ride around South Africa in 1914/15, and the role of the bicycle in the emancipation of women.

Gallery II explores the multiple ways in which the basic design of the bicycle has been modified for recreational, competitive, touring and commuting purposes. This gallery also includes spectacular, one-of-a-kind displays on South Africa-made bikes and the bikes ridden by some of our most famous cyclists around Africa (Riaan Manser) or to win Olympic medals or world championships (Burry Stander, Greg Minnaar, Riaan Nel, Conrad Scholtz and Wimpie van der Merwe). Mireille Wenger, Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities left with a very favourable impression of a highly innovative museum that is likely to become an important hub for cycling and other healthy outdoor pursuits in the Elgin Valley.

Leading the charge to economic growth (continue from Page 1) Events The recent South Africa and Wales rugby Test decider played at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium saw nearly 51 000 people pack the venue to cheer the Springboks to victory – it’s just the beginning. Filling the 62,000-capacity venue will give Cape Town’s events industry that much-needed push to claw back revenue and jobs, while at the same time confirming the city and province’s reputation as important tourist and investment destinations. Officials said that in the past, major sporting events like the rugby sevens tournaments have injected hundreds of millions into the local economy. One such tournament staged at the DHL Stadium several years ago brought in more than R750 million alone. “Sports tourism is an important contributor to our local economy. Through bringing full capacity crowds to our stadia, we support not only our sports federations but also vendors, cleaning staff, security teams, and every other person and business who earn a living through these major events,” said Anroux Marais, Provincial Cultural Affairs and Sport Minister. Cape Town can look forward to a number of big tournaments, including the upcoming Rugby World Cup Sevens in September, and the Hockey Masters World Cup in October. The World Sevens Series also returns to the Mother City in December.
| Have you seen the new landmark in George? Redberry Farm in George on the Garden Route is an ideal destination for berry-lovers, fun-seeking families and outdoor enthusiasts. The farm is now home to a Giant Strawberry, standing tall at an astonishing 14,5 metres. A spiral staircase will take you to the top where you can admire the view of the nearby strawberry fields, Outeniqua mountains and the surrounding farms. You can also conquer the largest permanent hedge maze in the Southern Hemisphere at Redberry Farm. The maze consists of seven strawberry stations, a 25 m underground tunnel and a look-out point – found within 10 km of pathways. The hedges are grown from over 30 000 Syzygium Paniculatum plants. Your goal is not to navigate your way to the exit, like in a traditional maze, but rather to find all seven strawberry stations hidden inside and to stamp your maze card with the unique icon at each station. You can claim a reward at the end only if you present your maze card stamped with the seven unique icons. Experiences on offer also include picking your own strawberries, a Tea Garden and Farm Stall, the Red Shed Coffee & Berry Bar, a miniature train ride on the Redberry Express, a large outdoor playground, pedal go-carts, pony rides and bumper boats and bubble balls on the dam. | Sasol Solar Challenge
The New Ashton Arch recently clinched an award for Best Infrastructure Project greater than R100m at the 2022 Fulton Awards. South Africa’s first transversely launched concrete tied-arch bridge, the project also received a commendation for Innovation & Invention in Concrete.
More than a decade after its debut in South Africa, the Sasol Solar Challenge continues to be the ultimate test of technology and innovation and contributor to the future of mobility globally.
scoops win at 2022 Fulton Awards
ultimate test of technology and innovation
Held every two years by Cement & Concrete South Africa (CCSA), the Fulton Awards recognises excellence in the design, use, and innovation in concrete. Aecom, which entered the project on behalf of its client, the Western Cape Government’s Department of Transport and Public Works, Roads Branch, was responsible for all engineering aspects, from road and bridge design to project and construction management.

“The successful completion of this project clearly shows that innovative design and construction techniques can blend structural concrete and steel, using modern structural methodology, into one unified end product with a distinct purpose and aesthetic appeal,” says Aecom Cape Town bridges team lead Abé Newmark.
The Sasol Solar Challenge, in its fourteenth year, is a biennial competition for talented engineering teams from around the world to challenge each other to cover as much distance as possible as they travel on public roads from Gauteng to the Western Cape. Local and international teams conceptualise, design and build solar-powered vehicles to drive across South Africa in the eight-day-long event while competing against each other, demonstrating and showcasing their design, manufacturing, and strategy skills. The challenge runs on public roads, sharing space with trucks and regular traffic, and passes through multiple small towns. The Sasol Solar Challenge was inspired by the World Solar Challenge which is now known as the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, held in Australia since 1987. The Sasol Solar Challenge provides young people with the opportunity to experience hands-on learning and witness real-life applications of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education from like-minded scholars from around the world. It also helps them to better understand how solar technology works and why electric transportation is important for the future. Some teams go an extra mile to design and incorporate technologies into their solar cars, which enhances the communities’ experience. Teachers and entire communities along the Sasol Solar Challenge route, also have an opportunity to transform their skills and knowledge and impart those to young people - for the progress of the society.
“It has definitely been the most memorable project experience of my 40-year career as a bridge engineer. The other aspect that feeds into the innovation is obviously the transverse launching, a first for Africa,” Newmark notes. To minimise traffic disruption, the new bridge was constructed adjacent to the existing bridge while maintaining traffic over it. Upon completion, the new bridge was then used as a temporary bypass and river crossing while the existing bridge was demolished, and new abutments built. The new tied-arch bridge was launched transversely into its final position in less than 12 hours on 14 August 2021. “A project like this reveals that our South African engineers can compete with the best in the world, which is very encouraging.”

Through 11 projects between 2011 and 2021, this sector attracted R17,99 billion in FDI, coming second to Communications on the same measure. It was ahead of the Business Services sector, which came in third. This data confirms the huge potential of the Western Cape’s Green Economy, and how a continued focus on strengthening our energy resilience will not only relieve the pressure created by load-shedding, but also contribute to more investment and economic growth, while driving a clean energy transition. That is precisely why we need to create an enabling environment for the private sector at every turn so that they can meet the growing demand for renewable energy. Wesgro, Cape Town and the Western Cape’s Official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, is also assisting investors to land their Green Economy projects in the Western Cape.

Old Vine Project | Kanu Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2019 “Our long association with Chenin Blanc takes form in a wine from grapes sourced from our neighbour, more precisely, from beautiful old bush vines planted in 1980. In line with protocols set out by the Old Vine Project, wines made from these grapes are made in a minimalistic way, meaning whole bunch pressing, natural fermentation with no other additives. Sulphur is only added prior to bottling, but kept to a minimum level, just sufficient to protect against oxidation. Should the wine be fermented in oak barrels, no new oak is allowed to mask the character of the grape. Our Old Vine Chenin was fermented in seasoned 400 L French and Hungarian barrels and matured for 10 months with barrels rolled weekly to keep the wine in contact with the lees, for added complexity. A portion of the wine underwent fermentation and maturation in a stainless-steel tank. The wine was bottled unfiltered and spent 6 months composing itself before release. A wonderful, rich nose exuding notes of citrus, peach kernel with the barest trace of spearmint. Opening further in the glass, the wine displays its multi-layered nose, revealing baked quince, spice, and hints of vanillin’s. The palate is complex with a perceptible wet pebble minerality, fatness from partial malolactic fermentation, but all kept in check with a fresh line of acidity.” Best enjoyed with good friends and good food. Diageo World Class | Bartender takes his mixology skills global Young Capetonian bartender Joshua Hendricks will be winging his way to Australia in September to represent South Africa in the global final of the Diageo World-Class competition. In the knock-out challenge, 50 different spirits had to be identified correctly by the contestants until just one person remained.
KWV Brandy | World's Best
South African brandy’s light shines even brighter this month, and not just because of its popularity in chillier months. The reason is South Africa – and KWV, specifically – having just been hailed once again as the world’s best producer of brandy and cognac. The occasion was the awarding last week of trophies at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC), arguably the world’s most comprehensive and authoritative competition of its kind. It was here that KWV Brandy’s Héritage XO received the trophy for Best Cognac, and KWV 15, the trophy for Best Brandy while KWV itself was named Best Producer overall.
The 24-year-old, from Bergvliet, is the youngest person to claim top honours in the local leg of the competition, which has supported, trained and inspired over 400 000 bartenders, across 60 countries, for over 12 years. The national final was held in the Mother City over three days in June, where 10 contestants were put through their paces in front of a judging panel. The competition kicked off with a Mastery challenge, where contestants had to identify 50 cocktail ingredients by smell and taste alone. In the speed round, contestants had to create 10 original cocktails in eight minutes. The Tuesday saw two challenges for the mixologists, a heritage challenge where they had to make a group serve using one of the Johnnie Walker expressions based on their culture. Saving the biggest task for last, the remaining six contestants had to create their own pop-up bar within 24 hours, using a concept of their own choice. Hendricks was one of 100 up-and-coming barmen chosen from around the country to attend Diageo’s The Hand-Up Mentorship Programme last year. “It was a great experience and a useful refresher of knowledge I had forgotten, such as the history of cocktails. I definitely applied what I learnt at World Class, especially the speed round, which mentally prepares you about patterns you need to follow and helps you to fine-tune.” Hendricks will attend the Diageo World Class global final in Sydney in September, where he will take on 49 of the world’s best bartenders in a quest for the title of best in the world. Those wanting to try Hendrick’s cocktails can visit him at Fable in Bree Street for one of his experiential cocktails. The ‘by bartenders for bartenders’ programme upskilled young bartenders over nine months to become competitors in Diageo’s World-Class competition, providing them with stock, equipment as well as theoretical and practical training.
KWV also led in the medal stakes, which were announced in the first instalment of the competition earlier this year. KWV 20 won Double Gold and KWV 10 and 12 each won Gold. Silver medals were awarded to Richelieu 10, Richelieu International, Klipdrift Premium, Van Ryn’s 10, 12, 15 and 20. The most recent accolades follow just weeks after Van Ryn’s 20-year-old potstill brandy was named World’s Best Brandy by the panel at the World Brandy Awards. At the same event, both 20-year-old brandies from Van Ryn’s and KWV took Gold.

“90% of all millionaires become so through owning real estate.” – Andrew Carnegie There is a perception that it is very expensive and onerous to buy property in Europe to realize a Plan B. In Cyprus – an English-speaking, ex-British colony and full member of the EU – this perception couldn’t be more further from the truth. Cyprus is an appealing investment, relocation and holiday destination and year on year has seen an increase in property sales to overseas buyers especially in the Western part of the island. Huge investment is pouring into the economy which has resulted in phenomenal growth and long-term stability. An astute offshore property investment that works for you in the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime. In Cyprus investing in real estate and following a residency programmes will reap financial rewards and lifelong benefits. Can you afford not to take advantage of this while the programmes are still open?
Cyprus has a relaxed, stress-free lifestyle offering an ideal family environment. Because of this, Cyprus is a very attractive relocation destination for expats and their families. Aligning Subject Choices With Career Prospects Is Key Hundreds of thousands of parents today have children who require additional assistance academically, emotionally, or both. For these parents, concerns are never far away that their child will battle in the world of the future, and that they might not ultimately achieve personal and career success. But an educational psychologist says parents need to change the paradigm through which they view success, as many are still focused on ideas about what constituted becoming a successful adult in the past, rather than embracing a world of new opportunities that are constantly emerging. “In the past, and unfortunately among some people until now, there was this perception that if your child is not studying to be a medical doctor or a lawyer, then
they haven’t made it,” says Dr Greg Pienaar, renowned Educational Psychologist and Principal of The Bridge Assisted Learning School, which supports students facing challenges unrelated to cognitive ability. “Everyone has a future in terms of a passion or career, so if your child is not specifically focused on academic matters, then there are literally thousands of other career paths to follow. And these career paths are not inferior, they are just different,” he says. “So, what if your child is interested in something to do with food or cooking or hospitality? What if your child loves everything to do with computers or technology? What if your child is interested in travelling the world and discovering its wonders? What if your child has the skill or ability to run a business or be an entrepreneur? Don’t force children in a career path - “It makes no sense to force them to follow a career path which is not natural for them, while there are avenues available which will support their future career success in a field that interests them or which they are passionate about.” Happiness and fulfilment - “Academic and career success is not merely a case of doing well, but of doing well and being happy and fulfilled while doing so. It is important that our focus fall equally on the other half of the equation, not simply the surface considerations of success.” There are many ways to fulfilment in life, but if we have the opportunity to choose something which may lead to happiness and fulfilment, then we should do so, Dr Pienaar says. “Parents can help their children make a start on this road by allowing them – with the help of education experts at their school – to choose subjects appropriate to their desired careers wisely.”

When Motivated by WHY, Success Just Happens It was a turn-of-the-century version of the dot-com boom. The promise of a revolutionary new technology was changing the way people imagined the future. And there was a race to see who could do it first. It was the end of the nineteenth century, and the new technology was the airplane. One of the best-known men in the field was Samuel Pierpont Langley. Like many other inventors of his day, he was attempting to build the world’s first heavier-than-air flying machine. The goal was to be the first to achieve machine-powered, controlled, manned flight. The good news was Langley had all the right ingredients for the enormous task; he had, what most would define as, the recipe for success. What was Langley’s Motivation? Langley had a bold goal, but he didn’t have a clear sense of WHY. His purpose for wanting to build the plane was defined in terms of WHAT he was doing and WHAT he could get. He had a passion for aeronautics since a very young age, but he did not have a cause to champion. More than anything else, Langley wanted to be first. He wanted to be rich and famous. That was his driving motivation. Although already well regarded in his own field, he craved the kind of fame of a Thomas Edison or Alexander Graham Bell, the kind that comes only with inventing something big. Langley saw the airplane as his ticket to fame and fortune. He was smart and motivated, had plenty of cash, and he had the best people and ideal market conditions. The Wright brothers had a dream A few hundred miles away in Dayton, Ohio, Orville and Wilbur Wright were also building a flying machine. Unlike Langley, the Wright brothers did not have the recipe for success. Worse, they seemed to have the recipe for failure. There was no funding for their venture. No government grants. No high-level connections. The Wright brothers funded their dream with the proceeds from their bicycle shop. Not a single person working on the team, including Orville and Wilbur, had a college education; some did not even finish high school. What the Wright brothers were doing wasn’t any different from Langley. But the Wright brothers did have something very special.
They had a dream. They knew WHY it was important to build this thing. Furthermore, they believed that if they could figure out this flying machine, it would change the world. They imagined the benefits to everyone else if they were successful. Orville and Wilbur preached what they believed and inspired others in the community to join them in their cause. The proof of their commitment was self-evident. With failure after failure, most would have given up, but not the Wright brothers’ team. The team was so inspired that no matter how many setbacks they suffered, they would show up for more. Every time the Wright brothers went out to make a test flight, they would take five sets of parts with them. Then it happened. On December 17, 1903, on a field in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright brothers took to the sky. A fifty-nine-second flight at an altitude of 120 feet at the speed of a jog was all it took to usher in a new technology that would change the world. What Langley and the Wright brothers were trying to create was the same; both were building the same product, were highly motivated, had a strong work ethic and both had keen scientific minds. What the Wright brothers’ team had that Langley didn’t have was inspiration. One was motivated by the prospect of fame and wealth, the other by a belief. Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 line-up confirmed The full 40-team line-up for Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 has been confirmed, following an enthralling weekend of action in Bucharest. The remaining eight tickets to Cape Town – four men’s and four women’s – were decided at the RWC Sevens 2022 Europe Qualifier, which took place at Stadionul National Arcul de Triumf in July. Tygerberg Hospital School accommodates learners Tygerberg Hospital School fills an academic void in the lives of children who are in hospital for extended periods. The school, which has been in existence since 1959, consists of a primary school section and a high school section. It is located on the lower ground floor at Tygerberg Hospital. The school caters for approximately 45-50 learners daily, ranging from Grade R to Grade 12. These children suffer from illnesses such as cancer, heart, lung, kidney, liver and orthopaedic conditions. Educators collect the children from the wards in the morning and accompany them (some in wheelchairs) to the school. They then return them to the wards after school. Children who are unable to leave their wards receive bedside education. Some children attend Tygerberg Hospital School for a few days to several months or even years. The school also caters for learners who are well enough to go home but not to attend mainstream schools. Some children have been out of school for very long periods of time and are too old to join their grades. These children follow an Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) stream at the school. Tygerberg Hospital School provides another important service for a particularly vulnerable and previous neglected group of children – a specialised unit for psychiatric patients called iThuba - established in 2004 to accommodate a maximum of 15 learners (up to Grade 12) with psychiatric illnesses. The ultimate objective is to enable the learners to resume their school careers with ease following discharge from hospital. Furthermore, the Tygerberg Hospital School caters for an additional 20 learners with Specific Barriers to Learning (Apraxia). Apraxia of speech is a specific speech disorder. Volunteers enhance the overall learning experience by presenting a variety of additional activities such as kinetics, karate, art and reading sessions aimed at cultivating a love for reading. The objective is to enable learners to resume their school career with ease following discharge from hospital.

Clanwilliam Wildflower Show The theme of this year’s Clanwilliam Wildflower Show from 25 August until 4 September is, “Let’s walk together”. It will be the first show that was built in three years. The idea is to pay tribute to the Cederberg’s many hiking trails. During lockdown, many hikers once again realized the importance of hiking these trails for their well-being. Footpaths, with cairns showing the way, will lead visitors through this man-made landscape in the Flower Church. The show is created by volunteers who live in Clanwilliam. A visit to Clanwilliam’s Ramskop Nature Garden will definitely also be worthwhile. Volunteers have also been as busy as bees in this garden and the garden is looking great. At least 150 new protea plants have recently been planted in this garden with its beautiful views over the Clanwilliam Dam. “We invite you to don your vellies, so we can walk together through the veld, the flower show and the garden.” For more information contact Ilse Lochner on 083-328-4575

hermanus whale festival Every year, southern right whales migrate from their icy feeding grounds off Antarctica to warmer climates, reaching the South African Whale Coast in June and will stay until early December. These coastal waters will then team with the giant mammals, mating, calving, and rearing their young – and giving whale-watchers spectacular displays of raw power and elegant water acrobatics incredibly close to shore. The annual Hermanus Whale Festival is a celebration of the return of the southern right whales to the coastal waters of Southern Africa. It is a tribute to the legacy left to the town by Wendy the Whale, whose story is about man’s ability to live in harmony with nature as well as people’s ability to come together as communities valuing the environment. All events and activities during the whale festival are focused to create awareness on how to protect the whales and all our marine wildlife who share our coastal waters. The festival takes place from 30 September - 2 October 2022 which is the peak of whale activity in the region. Over a period of 3 days, Hermanus will once again burst into life when thousands of visitors descend upon the town to join in the festivities of this popular event. Now in its 31st year and the 30th festival, the Hermanus Whale Festival is the oldest and largest festival on the South African whale coast calendar and while the whales are predominantly the star performers at the festival, these gentle giants will be joined on land by quality entertainers and musicians, an array of food stalls, kiddies activities, and events suitable for both the young and old. The heartbeat of the whale festival, the Eco-Marine Tent, has become the festival’s biggest attraction. Informative and entertaining, with a focused appeal to children, adults and anyone who cares about preserving our ocean wildlife. The aim of the Eco Marine Tent and the Hermanus Whale Festival is to inspire visitors

Going in Search of Old Hermon Legend has it that in the days of mail trains – long before cell phones, email and social media – Old Hermon pedalled the dusty gravel roads between Wellington and Riebeek West. He alerted the local residents to the weekly mail delivery, with his trusty bugle, at the end of the train track in the hamlet then known as Herman. For years, he fulfilled this role, until one day Old Hermon simply disappeared; riding the Cape’s expanding network of gravel roads into the sunset. Now the legend of Old Hermon has been revived. Celebrating the rural dirt tracks he used to cycle. The inaugural race which takes place on 27 August will start and finish at the historic Welbedacht Wine Estate - the 60-, 40- and 20-kilometre routes take in some of the region’s best gravel roads. Roads once ridden by Old Hermon himself. Maintaining Old Hermon’s inclusive approach to cycling, there is something for everyone at the Old Hermon gravel ride. Racers can test themselves against some top gravel grinders in the Western Cape. While fit, but less competitive, riders can better their Cape Town Cycle Tour seedings in the 60-kilometre distance. The 40-kilometre route is less arduous, taking in 340 metres of climbing rather than the 540 the long distance does. For the social riders and the families, the 20-kilometre is a perfectly relaxed ride, taking in just 200 metres of elevation gain. Photo: The Old Hermon routes Photo Credit: Chris Hitchcock
“The gravel roads of Wellington, Hermon and the Riebeeks are hardly secret gems,” David Bellairs, of the organisers the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, smiled knowingly. “Old Hermon was riding them 120 years ago, on a road bike, after all!” For more information visit www.capetowncycletour.com/old-hermon-gravel-ride
