Life is short, and we only live once. Learning to live life to the fullest is an important step in making the most of every day.

We all have good days and bad days. The most important is to make the best out of each day, regardless of the good or bad. Ultimately, we only have one life to live. We can’t control all the bad things that happen, but we can change our attitude toward them — and in the process, shape our future and create our most amazing life experience.
Whether it’s taking care of your children, working hard, writing in your journal, baking fabulous creations, relaxing on the beach, hiking, or sightseeing - you get to decide how you enjoy spending your time. Your parents, friends, community, and society in general all have their opinions, but at the end of the day, you’re the only person who will be around for every moment of your life. An appreciative round of applause rang out inside the marquee on the sidelines of the finish line at the University of Cape Town during the post-race media conference when Steyn, her trademark smile lighting up the room, made the announcement. “I will donate some bonus money towards the development of young athletes in Maritzburg. I want to inspire the young athletes, to show them that we as South Africans can achieve great things.” Gratitude Gerda Steyn set a new record in the 56 km Two Oceans Marathon as she went on to claim a third consecutive title in Cape Town recently. She beat Frith van der Merwe’s previous course record of 3:30:36, by becoming the first woman to break the 3.5 hour barrier in the race with a time of 3:29:42. The 32-year-old becomes the first athlete in 22 years to claim a hat-trick of victories in the ultra marathon. “The record stays home. I’m really proud and humbled by that. I love this race, and I will carry the record with the upmost humbleness and pure gratefulness because I know that I was carried today by the support I receive in such abundance,” she said afterwards. Steyn now holds the national marathon, the Two Oceans, as well as the Comrades Up Run records – confirmation she’s South Africa’s best female roadrunner of all time.

One of our favourite Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon heroes, Frank Steyn, the Runner in School Shoes, achieved a PB of 06:43:39, up from 07:13 in 2019, huge blisters and bloodied toes. “It was an emotional journey once again,” says Frank Paco Steyn. Seeing my kids as I came out of Chapman’s Peak into Constantia Nek at the water station gave me the extra boost I needed. I had adopted 'Conquer the current' as my own internal personal motto when I felt the pain, in order to #KeepPushing.” Frank’s mission is to raise enough funds and awareness to eradicate barefoot learning in the Cape Flats in his lifetime, as part of a major initiative for the Run for Schools Foundation, who work closely on many levels to improve holistic learning conditions in Cape Flats schools.

When we heard his story, I was so excited that he was joining our club.” “He is so driven by making a difference and being as supportive as he possibly can be. It was amazing to run with him as an athlete, but also just sharing the road with him and seeing the positive impact he’s had on so many of the people watching and supporting, was really special.” “He has always said that he runs to make a difference, and I’m grateful that he was willing and able to join our team and help us to qualify for Comrades 2022! | Observe, conserve, preserve at the Plett Ocean Festival Plett Tourism is proud to introduce the inaugural Plett Ocean Festival, inviting all interested parties to save the dates of 1 – 10 July 2022 to celebrate Plettenberg Bay’s most beloved treasures: the ocean, marine life, and beaches. The festival will be anchored by a three-day marine science symposium and a variety of ocean-themed events with a strong conservation theme. Plettenberg Bay has much to offer during winter including mild weather and abundant marine life. Attention during this time of the year is largely focused on the wonders of the ocean as the whales are in the bay, scuba diving and snorkelling conditions are often idyllic, and the resident seals, dolphins, sharks, and marine birds are attracted to plentiful food sources. Among many highlights of the upcoming festival, the Marine Science Symposium, from 1-3 July 2022 will be held at the oceanside Beacon Isle Resort over three days and presentations will cover topics ranging from marine life, ecological impact presentations and conservation projects by a selection of top scientists and biologists in their fields. The Plett Ocean Festival will also offer a variety of fun and family-friendly activities including rocky shore excursions, guided hikes, scuba diving and snorkelling, trail runs, surf lessons, angling competitions, a team surfing competition, and an oceanic art exhibition. Collaborations at the festival are many as Nature’s Valley Trust has partnered with Open Plan Pictures to screen the animated movie, Seal Team alongside an educational talk on pollution and marine debris; Adopt-A-Swimmer and the Black Mermaid Foundation have partnered to introduce youngsters to the wonders

As a town with six international Blue Flag Beaches and two Blue Flag Boats, a Mission Blue Hope Spot, and surrounded by both national parks and marine protected areas, the Plett Ocean Festival aims to be an all-inclusive, one-of-a-kind event that celebrates conserving and sustainably enjoying our marine resources: beaches, shoreline and the deep blue sea.
| Cape Town to gain unique boutique retreat The Apostle Battery, a World War II defence station which falls within the SANParks managed Table Mountain National Park, is set to be revitalised and reimagined in a joint collaboration between NEWMARK Hotels & Reserves and ILIOS Travel.
Renowned hospitality designers, Fox Browne Creative, have been tasked with reinterpreting and reinventing the site by creating a series of welcoming, cool, contemporary, high-end, authentic, inclusive and reflective experiences that remain true to the original history and spirit of the military site.
The historic military battery on the mountains above the seaside enclave of Llandudno, is to become a unique retreat hotel following the announcement by SANparks and NEWMARK Hotels & Reserves that the site will be re-developed into a premier hospitality destination consisting of luxury accommodation, eateries, a spa, retail offerings, a museum and interactive experiences.
Designed in partnership with Jack Alexander, the two intimate mountain lodges will be built from light gauge steel and canvas. The design of the lodges and suites is contemporary and luxurious, while complementing the original style of the military structures on the site. The interior style will feature understated luxurious elements made up of the finest local South African furniture and crafts. The Mountain Lodge is centred around the three original gun sites known as the Apostle Battery, originally constructed in 1940 as an important part of South Africa’s naval defence system. In addition to the three-gun batteries, the existing buildings at the Apostle Battery, all constructed between 1939 and 1945, include a guardroom, workshop, quartermaster sergeant’s room, mess halls, soldiers’ dormitories, a radio room, generator room, storeroom and ammunition room. The Rejuvenation Destination Spa will feature private treatment rooms, salt and steam chambers, an eco-friendly plunge pool with sundeck and a state-of-the-art gym. These facilities will be available to be enjoyed by lodge guests, as well as day-spa visitors. The historic battery guns on site will form an integral part of the development, and that the heritage of the site remains key to the entire project. The sensitive development and renovation of the Apostle Battery military site will take approximately three years to complete, with 2025 pinned for the opening of the still to be named small luxury retreat hotel.

| NSRI deliver first survival
| Another top honour
Swimming Centre to Meiring Primary School
for Matie choir
NSRI Drowning Prevention Manager, Andrew Ingram, says their dream has finally come to fruition, with the delivery of the first NSRI Survival Swimming Centre to Meiring Primary School in Riebeek Kasteel. “Children often don’t get to have swimming lessons because of financial barriers,” Andrew explains. “The other thing that prevents children from learning to swim is having a safe piece of water to do it in. And lastly, the absolute nightmare is a child drowning in a swimming pool. These problems all mean that what is needed is a safe indoor swimming pool that can be moved anywhere.”
The University Choir Stellenbosch has once again taken first place on the prestigious Interkultur World Rankings. The SU Choir has been in first place on this ranking for amateur choirs since 2012. “I am so proud of my choir members. This recognition celebrates the exceptional dedication, enthusiasm and talent of our choir over the past 20 years,” says Mr André van der Merwe, Conductor of the SU Choir. The mission of Interkultur, an international cultural organisation renowned for being the world’s leading organiser of international choirs and festival and organiser of the bi-annual World Choir Games, is to unite people of all countries, cultures and world views through song.
The Drowning Prevention team came up with an ingenious solution to these problems. They decided to build an NSRI Survival Swimming Centre inside a twelve-metre-long shipping container. The centre features a sixmetre-long swimming pool, an office space for the instructor, and a change room for the students. The pool is one metre deep, so small children can stand in it, and it can be locked up to prevent anyone from accessing the pool. The 6-metre length of the pool comes from the World Health Organization’s directive, which states that you need to teach children to move through water for at least 5 metres. The ambitious project came with a number of challenges, which the team overcame through partnerships with various companies. One of these challenges was how to ensure that the water is kept clean. It required an excellent filtration and circulation system, as it would be used many times in one day.
With a new repertoire of iconic local and international works, the choir will soon be hosting a gala concert in the NG “Moederkerk” in Stellenbosch (7 May - 8 May) and at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Center in Parow (15 May). The University Choir Stellenbosch is the oldest and most celebrated university choir in South Africa. It was founded in 1936 by William Morris. Tickets available via Quicket

Walking into Henri’s, you’ll be greeted by the owner, Pierre and his staff, who will treat you like guests in our own home. Henri’s combines an inspired menu with a casually sophisticated setting in a heritage house conveniently situated on Somerset West Main Road. We also welcome larger groups, our top floor has been renovated and can be used for private functions. Our inviting, comfortable dining room is the perfect place to enjoy a great meal.
“A company called Fluidra came to the party with an absolutely top-of-the-line system, which is automated, so the survival swimming teacher just needs to focus on teaching swimming. I can look at my cellphone at any time of the day and I can see the water temperature, and the pH and acidity levels. And we can monitor everything that happens in the container from our Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). We have a camera in the container, and the EOC and I get an alert when someone enters. We can then access the camera and see who is entering.” The first phase of the project is being trialled and tested at Meiring Primary School.

Mountain bikers & leading insurers unite to protect nature
Veld fires have been stopped in their tracks in the Western Cape, thanks to caring mountain bikers and leading insurance companies. These public-spirited companies include Santam, Old Mutual, Hollard Insurance, Lombard Insurance, Mutual & Federal, and Bryte. Wild fires are known to scorch the province’s nature areas annually, often destroying precious natural wilderness areas, which makes the province a global tourist destination. Members of the fast-growing mega-sport of mountain biking (MTB) have now stepped up to the plate, to add more fire-power to the Western Cape Government and municipalities’ desperate efforts to quell the flames. Helderberg Cycle World has led the charge, as a leading MTB retailer and club in the Helderberg. Petie Viljoen, of Helderberg Cycle World, agents of Specialized, explained: “We mountain bikers are nature-lovers at heart. We have been distraught to see vast areas burn – such as Jonkershoek last year, February. This has damaged our fauna and flora, our healthy networks of MTB trails, and our reputation as a global tourism attraction. We cannot afford for these fires to run wild.” “We could not stand by and watch helplessly. We had to act fast,” Viljoen said. The MTB leader made contact with leading members of RSA insurance companies, who were equally concerned about runaway veld fires annually. Together, the MTB team and insurers devised a bold plan: To attack fires with maximum resources, as soon as possible after they started. Thus, the “Rapid Attack Team” was born. Leading Edge Aviation was contracted, and rapidly scrambled into place a fleet of three helicopters, pilots and support crew. Stellenbosch Air Field was strategically selected as their home base, to allow the fastest-possible aerial reach to the bulk of greater Cape Town and the Cape Winelands. The fire-fighting choppers included 2 Huey’s (1000 litre carrying capacity each) and a Blackhawk with an optimal payload of 2500 litres. Since the pioneering partnership began, the Rapid Attack Team has hit fires with maximum speed – thus dramatically slowing the spread of fires. The courageous airmen have flown on 19 occasions, for over 34 full hours, dropping 451 cargoes of water – amounting to more than 420 tonnes of water, stopping flames in their tracks. “We believe our unique partnership with these leading insurance companies has saved at least R50-million in potential damage to property,” said Helderberg Cycle World’s Viljoen. “But, as importantly, we have been able to protect rich areas of nature, which are so precious to our economy, our heritage and our healthy lives. Our partners, these leading insurance companies, have been able to demonstrate how we as civil society and the private sector can unite to support our government agencies, together.” The partners intend to continue their efforts to tackle Cape veld fires proactively, in the proven proactive manner, in future.
"Thank you for protecting our rich areas of nature"

Delheim Estate’s
For shawarma In the Mother City
Wild Mushroom Forage returns
Originating in the Middle East, shawarma is a crowd-favourite known for its aromatic, tangy and warm flavours. Traditionally, shawarma is filled with pieces of lamb, chicken or beef, or a mix of these meats, and flavoured with garlic, lime and a range of spices, wrapped together in a large flatbread. The filling dish is often topped with tahini or hummus. When the hunger pangs strike, sometimes the only dish that will fix it is a delicious and flavour-packed shawarma. Cape Town is home to a few restaurants, delis, food stalls and the like offering shawarma. Nish Nush (City Bowl) is a casual dining spot in Bree Street that offers curbside outdoor seating from its “hummus hatch” and specialises in authentic Middle Eastern street food. Johnny Shawarma (Sea Point) - Located in the heart of bustling Sea Point, Johnny Shwarma is a vibrant dining spot offering shawarma in a pita and a deconstructed shawarma version in fresh salad bowls. The Falafel Guy (Sea Point) - Arguably one of Cape Town’s most-talked-about falafel spots, the Falafel Guy, located on the sunny and picturesque Sea Point Promenade, is a food stall that aims to offer authentic Middle Eastern dishes and flavours. Shawarma Express (Sea Point, Table View and Rondebosch) Shawarma Express is known for offering traditional Middle Eastern cuisine with both shawarma and falafel available.
From blushers to dyeballs and laughing gyms to deceivers – that’s the fungus in store, and more, now that the splendid hunt for wild mushrooms at Delheim Estate in Stellenbosch is back. Re-emerging from the dark like the delicious forest treats, the renowned, family-owned winery once again presents its expert tutored excursions during the season’s annual short window. So, if you’re keen to participate, you’ll have to jump. But not only because mushrooms only appear for a short time after the winter’s first rains, when conditions are just right. In fact, it’s because the Delheim Wild Mushroom Forage will take place for members of the public on one day only – the public holiday of 16 June (Youth Day). The great news for this year is that signed-up foragers will again learn at hand of the host duo that has made this a highlight of the Cape winelands for 15 years. Delheim’s Nora Thiel was raised in a home that regularly foraged for mushrooms, and she’ll be joined by author and specialist Gary Goldman. Both master mycophiles, adept in the art of finding the fungi!
While the restaurant is well-known for its traditional shawarma and falafel offering, the menu also has a range of other options such as burgers and pizzas.
Apart from the quality of tuition and fun experience overall, the Delheim Wild Mushroom Forage is supremely popular for the forest where the toadstools sprout. It is here that the fungus thrives undisturbed, weaving its threads beneath the forest floor, transforming organic matter into healthy soil.
Shawarma House (City Bowl) - Located along Long Street, Shawarma House offers a range of shawarma menu options with a twist – unlike traditional shawarmas, the ones on offer are available wrapped up in a roti, naan, the traditional pita or a wrap.
In fact, edible mushrooms themselves are often linked with health benefits and some cultures even claim they possess a supernatural aura. Whatever their magic, many specimens are sumptuous as a dish, with some of the finest examples located at Delheim.
Greek Cypriot Restaurant
Sea Point
Ouzeri to open in Cape Town
Now home to Kanela Café Sea Point’s bustling Regent Road is now home to a new local favourite, Kanela Café. The look and feel of the café is rooted within an earthy feel, something that is accented by the indoor seating décor. Offering ample seating outdoors in a dreamy courtyard setting centred around a large stone water fountain, the outdoor ambience puts one in a holiday mood instantly, and it is hard to imagine this spot is on a busy main road as the noise does not filter into the seating area. With a long list of plant-based offerings, the menu sticks to wholesome basics such as smoothie bowls, hot breakfast options, light lunches and decadent (but healthy) sweet treats. A variety of light and filling dishes are available, and the quality of food paired with its affordable pricing offer real value to customers.
Chef Nic Charalambous has been operating his pop-up food brand, Ouzeri, in Cape Town since late 2020. His offering at the time (“A Greek Feast at Home”) included honest, flavour-packed Greek-style dishes like roasted olives with citrus, garlic and chilli; halloumi with apricot dressing; and lamb yiouvetsi, a stew made with orzo, cooked in a tasty tomato-based sauce. Nic’s food is influenced by the culture with which he grew up and the regional cooking of Cyprus and Greece. The great news is that his food will be available at his soon-to-be-opened restaurant in Cape Town’s CBD. Over the years, Nic run various pop-ups at different locations in Cape Town, including The Athletic Club and Social and Leo’s Wine Bar, where diners were able to get a taste of the chef’s story on a plate together with the relaxed, intimate and hospitable ambience he created. The name “Ouzeri” is the term for a traditional Greek blue-collar hangout. A place to catch up and unwind with a glass of ouzo or wine and some local mezze after work, often with a band playing rebetiko (Greek blues) in the background. Over time, the ouzeri evolved. The food became more substantial, there were waiters working tables, and the drinks list grew. But the food and the wine remained local and regional. The menu, while being based on regional Greek cooking, will also bring in elements from Nic’s travels through other parts of the Mediterranean.
With a strong focus on offering plant-based and meat-free dishes, the café continues its theme of sustainable offerings even with its coffee. A fresh cuppa from Kanela Café is made from coffee grown in the Democratic Republic of Congo, processed and roasted in Uganda.
Ouzeri will be located at 58 Wale Street in Cape Town and will be open for lunch and dinner. Bookings will open in mid-May.
Tea-lovers will be overjoyed to know that the café offers an extensive list of teas, from the regular rooibos to the speciality ginseng oolong tea.

South African Roelof Botha to head US venture capital giant which backed Apple
South African Roelof Botha has been named the head of the storied US venture firm Sequoia Capital. Sequoia has backed many of the world’s leading companies, ranging from Apple to Airbnb to Zoom. Botha is the grandson of the late politician Pik Botha. Born in Pretoria, he was raised in Hout Bay and attended Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck in Cape Town. In 1996, he graduated from the University of Cape Town with an actuarial science degree. He worked at US consulting firm McKinsey & Co in Johannesburg in the late 90s, before moving to the US to do an MBA at Stanford. Botha later became chief financial officer of PayPal, and worked there alongside fellow South African Elon Musk. Botha’s “keen instinct for innovation has made its mark on our partnership and on our industry,” Sequoia’s current chief Doug Leone wrote in a Twitter message. He also said that Botha will “set the overall tone and oversee the global centralised functions” of the firm, including its finance and culture, and that Botha will continue to lead Sequoia’s US and Europe business as managing partner. Sequoia has backed many of the world’s leading companies, ranging from Apple to Airbnb to Zoom. Founded by one-time semiconductor executive Don Valentine, it is one of the few venture firms to consistently out-perform the broader stock market decade after decade.
Workcation and luxury trends will lead tourism recovery The much-anticipated WTM Africa event in South Africa’s Mother City, Cape Town has officially come to an end, and it has been absolutely electric. How wonderful it was to see old friends face-to-face once again, celebrating the resilience of our industry and looking forward to the revival that’s clearly on the horizon. Cape Town’s CTICC was buzzing with travel professionals looking to unlock the ideas set to shape the world’s dreams and plans for the future of travel. Here’s a recap of the show highlights: The long-stay business traveller and the luxury traveller will lead the recovery for tourism to Africa in 2022. This is according to a travel review presented by ForwardKeys at WTM Africa. Luis Millan, Head of Research at ForwardKeys, explained that long-stay travellers have shown the most resilience over the past months. Next in line has been the luxury, high-end market, with travellers willing to spend more on premium services to Africa. Millan said that whereas global markets have relied heavily on inter-regional travel, the situation for Africa is very different. He explained that African tourism is driven mainly by long-haul travel, with the top three source markets currently leading the recovery for Africa being France, the US and the UK. Interestingly, African tourism performed above the global benchmark in 2021. In 2021, arrivals to Africa were down 64% compared to 2019 as opposed to 74% internationally. Global recovery picked up pace in 2022, and arrivals for Africa are currently only 33% down compared to 2019.
South African National Figure Skating Championships to take place at GrandWest
Visitors are welcome to come and watch the South African National Figure Skating competition taking place on Monday, 9 May and Tuesday, 10 May at the Ice Station at GrandWest. All eligible skaters were invited to take part in the South African National Figure Skating Championships 2022 by the Western Province Figure Skating Association and the South African Figure Skating Association (SAFSA). Figure Skating in the Western Province: “As the largest skating community in the country, we are fortunate to be able to offer Free Skating (solo), Pairs Skating, Ice-Dance and Synchronised Skating as well as a robust “Learn to Skate” program. Full-time coaches as well as dedicated ice time help our skaters achieve high levels of competitiveness, with many of our skaters representing Western Province at a National level, and some of these representing South Africa on the international circuit.” Figure skating is a complex sport, both technically (on the ice) and understanding how a skater progresses through the ranks. SAFSA (WP) has recently introduced an induction program for new members, giving skaters and parents vital information and points of reference to help smooth this process. Spectators can look forward to seeing incredibly talented skaters competing across a number of categories such as singles, pairs and synchronised skating teams. Tickets are R90 per person and payable at the door. Tickets are R50 each for pensioners and children under 10 years of age. For more information visit www.wpfigureskating.co.za

Benguela Cove
Developer reports on prospects for 2022 - 2023 Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate has seen a resurgence of interest in residential plot purchases, with a number of sales in the last 12 months, as well as the completion of three new houses, says the developer Penny Streeter OBE:
The estate also won gold in the international TITAN Property Awards for residential and hospitality development - for architectural design, interior design, property development, real estate, and marketing.
“The woes of the past few years thankfully seem to be behind us; many people appear to have re-evaluated their lives and are keen to make a permanent home on this beautiful vineyard estate at what was previously considered to be purely a holiday home location. It is good news for Hermanus, helping to boost the local economy. We intend to continue building new homes as we believe there is still unmet demand for finished luxury homes.”
March 2022 saw the launch of an extensive art exhibition, which features works by over 30 of South Africa’s top artists, including the acclaimed 7-metre bronze sculpture ‘Faith’ by Anton Smit. This is an international art galleries series that includes events at venues in the UK, owned by the Streeter family. Entry to the Benguela Cove estate and exhibition is free of charge, and it is open every day, from 10:00 until 18:00. The winery team, under the guidance of Cellar Master Johann Fourie, has continued to win awards for its cool-climate wines. The unique climatic conditions create a special terroir to produce wines that impress the judges at international competitions, as the lowest-lying vineyard, with the longest seaboard in the world. The southeasterly sea breeze is chilled by the Benguela Current flowing up from Antarctica, to cool the grapes at night after warm summer days, for slow ripening and perfect viniculture. During the year, the homeowners received a wine allocation of 72 bottles of Benguela Cove wines. The estate’s wine club expanded over the last 12 months, with new members joining to enjoy the discounts and range of special offers. Johann Fourie said: “We had concerns about the harvest this year, but it all came good. The longer hanging time has made for slow, even and optimum ripening at lower sugar levels, creating intense wines packed with aromatic, opulent fruit flavours, soft and juicy tannins balanced with fresh acidities and a level of brightness and purity to the wines.”
The Moody Lagoon restaurant offers a large open space that has attracted business groups and private parties for anniversary and birthday celebrations, and the developer’s future plans under consideration include the addition of a hotel and a second restaurant on the site, to create a smaller, more intimate dining space, as well as a delicatessen. The private estate has 124 residential erven, with 5 km of lagoon frontage and access restricted to residents and their guests. There is a clubhouse, tennis court, swimming pool, jetty, boat storage and a launch area giving access to the lagoon, which is protected by a sandbar. The separate commercial area features 70 hectares of vines and a winery, with wine tasting and sales, a restaurant, a children’s play area, and a popular programme of music and arts events. Highlights in the last 12 months, says the developer, included the installation of solar energy in the winery and the award of World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) Champion status for ‘exceptional commitment to the collective conservation of threatened habitat in South Africa’s Succulent Karoo and the Cape Floral Kingdom, as well as for outstanding dedication to environmentally responsible farming practices.’
“Look out for our first releases from vintage 2022 in early May as we launch our newly estate produced and bottled Lighthouse Collection Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc wines. Those who joined us for our harvest celebration event were lucky enough to have had a sneak preview and will know they’re wines worth waiting for!” For more information visit www.benguelacove.co.za
Tack Shack
Grand Opening starts with a ‘POP’ A thirty-year journey took a huge step forward with the grand opening of the new market leading Tack Shack retail location. From small beginnings, the mother and daughter team of Eve and Tanja have grown Tack Shack into the premier Equestrian store in the Western Cape. Having outgrown the longstanding shop in Durbanville, it was time for the next step with a bespoke building to perfectly match the needs of the business for the next exiting chapter. After more than a year of planning, building, and moving three different locations to the new premisses, it was time to share the new retail experience with the Equestrian folk of the Western Cape. The long wait was finally over on the 1st of April, and this was no April fools. From early morning the eager Equestrians thronged at the gate chomping at the bit to savour the new experience, great specials, and leading new product additions to the Tack Shack offering. And the day did not disappoint, “The opening was a huge success! I would like to thank all our customers for their continued support! We are looking forward to continuing this exiting journey, and we will be focusing on providing even more exiting local and international premium products at affordable prices for our customer to enjoy in our world-class store,” beamed Tanja “Furthermore”, she continued, “with the newly extended trading through to 2pm on a Saturdays, we are excited to welcome all Equestrians that have not had a chance to visit to come and enjoy the new retails experience.” Tack Shack now manufactures all leather equestrian products as well as repairing saddles under the same roof as the retail space, allowing for an optimised customer experience. It’s time to visit and enjoy this new experience of a premium one-stop shop for all your equestrian needs, your steed will thank you for it! TRAVEL
PAGE 11
E-visa & other travel changes coming for SA The Department of Home Affairs says it is in the process of simplifying South Africa’s visa regime through visa waiver agreements with identified countries and issuing long-term multiple entry visas to promote migration and tourism into South Africa and movement within the continent. In the department’s latest annual performance plan for 2022/2023, it noted that technology will be placed at the heart of operations through the implementation of the e-Visa system by making it easy and secure to enter and depart South Africa. The tourist module of the e-Visa has been activated in 14 countries thus far, including China, India, Kenya and Nigeria. The e-Visa system allows tourists and visitors to South Africa to apply for their visas online. The applications are sent to a central adjudication hub for approval while applicants sit in the comfort of their homes. This will result in the issuing of virtual visas. The department is also in the process of developing a Biometric Movement Control System (BMCS) which will enable the capturing of fingerprint and facial biometric data of all travellers who enter or exit South Africa. This will be built onto the existing live capture platform and be rolled out at 34 ports of entry across the country. The department is currently piloting e-gates at Cape Town International Airport aimed at improving passenger processing times and experience while maintaining the security and integrity of the country’s borders. The goal is to expand these e-gates to the country’s other major international airports alongside the introduction of a new passenger name record system.
The passenger’s name record system will be used to identify unknown threats based on passenger profiles, and the advanced passenger processing system is used to identify known suspects – for example, those on stop and watch lists.
Why travel is on most people’s bucket list Our first lockdown, almost two years ago to the day, turned our world upside down. And whilst we adapted and survived, studies show that we are now more exhausted, stressed and anxious than ever before.
If you have been looking for an excuse to step out of the rat race for a week or two, Shaun offers 4 compelling reasons why you should stop what you’re doing and start planning your next trip:
One of the solutions, according to Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts, is travel. “Packing your bags and going on holiday to a place you’ve never visited is bound to result in new experiences, magical, lasting memories and even, new friends. Science says that travel can even improve your overall health,” says Shaun.
Decreases stress and anxiety: Taking a break from the daily grind is essential to prevent burnout, and allow your mental, physical and emotional health to rejuvenate. It’s good for your heart: Other studies found that women who go on holiday at least twice a year are not only much less likely to suffer from chronic stress and depression, they also show a lower risk of heart attack, than those who holiday less frequently. Men showed a similar trend, with a 20% higher risk of death and a 30% higher risk of heart disease when holidaying less than once a year. Increases happiness: A Cornell University Study found that while people are generally always much happier while they’re travelling for leisure and are away from the office; people even experienced a surge in happy hormones before the trip, in the planning phase. Increases sleep: Travelling offers the perfect excuse to be a rebel by not setting an alarm, sleeping late, and having countless afternoon siestas. And, having more sleep means that you will reap the benefits which includes improved brain function and keeping your emotions in check. “Travel is on most people’s bucket list, and it’s easy to see why. It’s not just about the break in routine and day-to-day stressors, it’s also about the excitement of experiencing some place new and the joy that comes with spending quality time with those you love. Travel also offers the opportunity to expand your worldview, increase your knowledge and as stated above, improve your health. So, find a brand-new holiday spot to explore, and remember that the fun will already be ignited in the planning thereof, as you eagerly anticipate making brand-new memories!” Shaun concludes.
Approval for US’s Delta Air Lines flight Cape Town’s economy has been given a big boost with the news of the US’s Delta Air Lines finally getting the go-ahead from the South African government to fly a triangular route between Atlanta, Johannesburg and Cape Town. This approval is a long time coming. I have written several bespoke submissions on behalf of the City to Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula and Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu on this matter over the past few months. As the world continues its efforts to recover from the pandemic, more and more international airlines have announced flights to and from Cape Town International Airport. Most recently, Air Belgium said it will start a seasonal route from September 2022, while Air Botswana, Emirates and KLM will all increase the frequency of their flights in the coming months. The Delta route comes on top of the United Airlines announcement that it will be resuming direct flights between Cape Town and Newark/New York in June 2022, ahead of their initial schedule. Over the past decade, the US has been the largest source of Foreign Direct Investment by value into the Western Cape - R19,68 billion and last year, the US was the number one country to export from the province.

Be grateful for all the good things in life
“I had the blues because I had no shoes, until upon the street, I met a man who had no feet.” - From Dale Carnegie's book, How to Stop Worrying and start living I have known Harold Abbott for years. He lives at 820 South Madison Avenue, Webb City, Missouri. He used to be my lecture manager. One day, he and I met in Kansas City, and he drove me down to my farm at Belton, Missouri. During that drive, I asked him how he kept from worrying; and he told me an inspiring story that I shall never forget. “I used to worry a lot,” he said, “but one spring day in 1934, I was walking down West Dougherty Street in Webb City when I saw a sight that banished all my worries. It all happened in ten seconds, but during those ten seconds I learned more about how to live than I had learned in the previous ten years. For two years I had been running a grocery store in Webb City,” Harold Abbott said, as he told me the story. “I had not only lost all my savings, but I had incurred debts that took me seven years to pay back. My grocery store had been closed the previous Saturday; and now I was going to the Merchants and Miners Bank to borrow money, so I could go to Kansas City to look for a job. I walked like a beaten man. I had lost all my fight and faith. Then suddenly I saw coming down the street a man who had no legs. He was sitting on a little wooden platform equipped with wheels from roller skates. He propelled himself along the street with a block of wood in each hand. I met him just after he had crossed the street and was starting to lift himself up a few inches over the kerb to the sidewalk. As he tilted his little wooden platform to an angle, his eyes met mine. He greeted me with a grand smile. ‘Good morning, sir. It is a fine morning, isn’t it?’ he said with spirit. As I stood looking at him, I realised how rich I was. I had two legs. I could walk. I felt ashamed of my self-pity. I said to myself if he can be happy, cheerful, and confident without legs, I certainly can with legs.
I could already feel my chest lifting. I had intended to ask the Merchants and Miners Bank for only one hundred dollars. But now I had courage to ask for two hundred. I had intended to say that I wanted to go to Kansas City to try to get a job. But now I announced confidently that I wanted to go to Kansas City to get a job. I got the loan; and I got the job. “I now have the following words pasted on my bathroom mirror, and I read them every morning as I shave: I had the blues because I had no shoes, until upon the street, I met a man who had no feet.” Count your blessings – not your troubles Do you count your blessings, or are you always pondering about your problems? When life gets chaotic and stressful, sometimes it can be really hard to find the light at the end of the tunnel. About 90% of the things in our lives are right and about 10% are wrong. If we want to be happy, all we got to do is concentrate on the 90% that are right. If we intend to be worried and bitter and have stomach ulcers, just concentrate on the 10%. We seldom think of what we have, but always of what we lack. Count your blessings is a phrase which means to be grateful for all the good things in life. Life is a blessing in many ways. Gratitude is something that you have to practice regularly, and the more you work at it, the better you’ll get at showing it and reaping its many benefits. Just the fact that you woke up this morning is plenty to be grateful for because it’s another chance at life. Having a place you can call home and food to eat, that’s another source of gratitude right there. Consider yourself fortunate if you can experience the beautiful sunshine. Counting your blessings and not your problems is more powerful than you know.
It’s Never Too Late At the age of 40, he was cooking for travelers out of his service station. His cooking fame spread, and soon there were huge lines for his food. Sanders then moved across the street to a motel/restaurant to service the high demand. During this time, Sanders had also been tinkering with his special herbs and spices to make the perfect fried chicken. Sanders also ended up reaching his trademark 11 herbs and spices. In 1935, he was made into an honorary Colonel by the governor of Kentucky for his cooking skills. At the age of 60, Colonel Sanders had to shut down his restaurant business because a new highway was being built where his restaurant was located. At the age of 65 he was living from $99 social security checks in a small house, driving a beat-up car. He decided it was time to make a change, so he thought about what he had to offer that other people may benefit from. His mind went to his fried chicken recipe, which his friends and family loved. Persistence He left his home state of Kentucky and travelled throughout the country, trying to sell his recipe to restaurants. He even offered the recipe for free, asking for only a small chunk of the money that was earned. The story of Colonel Harland Sanders is truly remarkable. This story is inspirational because it’s an example of how perseverance, dedication, and ambition along with hard work can create success; regardless of your age. Colonel Sanders was rejected 1009 times before successfully selling his Kentucky Fried Chicken recipe! He had failed at every job he’d tried earlier on in his life, lawyer, salesman, you name it. Humble Beginnings His father died when he was just 6 years old, leaving him the man of the house with a mother and two younger siblings. He picked up the art of cooking quickly and mastered many dishes by the age of 7. During his early years, Harland worked different odd jobs such as a farm-hand, streetcar conductor, soldier, fireman, selftaught lawyer, insurance salesman, and steamboat operator.
However, most of the restaurants declined his offer. In fact, 1,009 restaurants said no. But even after all the rejections, he persisted. He believed in himself and his chicken recipe. By 1964, Colonel Sanders had 600 franchises selling his trademark chicken. At this time, he sold his company for $2 million dollars but remained as a spokesperson. In 1976, the Colonel was ranked as the world’s second most recognizable celebrity. Today, KFC is one of the largest fast-food franchises in the world and over the years, the company has been owned by RJ Reynolds, Pepsico and is currently under Yum Brands. It’s remarkable how the man started at the age of 65, when most retire, and built a global empire out of fried chicken. The Colonel’s success story is inspiring, and filled with hope for others who think it’s too late.

Slapstick CIRCUS Back in the 1930s, the world descended into The Great Depression. It was a time of great hardship, doom, and gloom, and it was the ‘Big Top’ travelling circus that buoyed people’s spirits. The circus was a source of escapism, affordable family entertainment, and brought much-needed joy. Fast-forward to 2021 and history repeats, as the world recovers from another pandemic and subsequent global depression. Reflective of the 30s, may the magic of the circus yet again provide the antidote for gloomy times. Slapstick is a traditional circus show with an invigorating 1930s twist, peppered with side-splitting comedy. This fun-filled, family show will transport audiences back to the era of Swing, Gypsy Jazz, The Three Stooges, Buster Keaton, and Charlie Chaplin. A celebration of the origination of Slapstick comedy, when ‘a pie in the face’ was popularized and exuberant colours were high fashion. Slapstick will take you on a nostalgic trip down memory lane, leave you in awe with breathtaking aerial displays, roaring with laughter at the comedic acrobatics and allow you to pack up your troubles. Slapstick will be performed by the supertalented youth from the Zapper’s Programme. The Dome will be transformed into a theatrical circus picnic site. Just bring your picnic blankets and cushions. Picnic spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, you can buy your yummy savoury picnic feast from Dish Food & Social. For more information visit www.zip-zap.co.za
