A young girl, wanting to earn some extra money for the summer, so she decided to hire herself out as a ‘handywoman’ and started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighbourhood. She went to the door of the first house, and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do. ‘Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my porch,’ he said. ‘How much will you charge me?’ A YOUNG GIRL Delighted, the girl quickly responded, ‘How about $50?’ The man agreed and told her that the paint brushes and everything she would need was in the garage. The man’s wife, hearing the conversation said to her husband, ‘Does she realize that our porch goes ALL the way around the house?’ He responded, ‘That’s a bit cynical, isn’t it?’ The wife agreed. Later that day, the girl came to the door to collect her money. ‘You’re finished already?’ they asked, surprised. ‘Yes,’ the girl replied. ‘And I even had paint left over, so I gave it two coats.’ Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50.00 and handed it to her along with a ten dollar tip. ‘And by the way,’ the girl added. ‘It’s not a Porch, it’s a Lexus.’

It’s all about giving and Shaylin (Age 13) and Elora (Age 6) of Langdon, Alberta are two incredible girls. On APRIL 13th at 4:00pm at X-HALE HAIR SALON in Langdon, they are cutting their waist-length hair for Angel Hair for Kids, “A Child’s Voice Foundation.” Their donation will help make hair wigs for underprivileged children suffering from hair loss due to cancer treatment. These two brave girls have lost 3 family members in the last 6 years to cancer, including a cousin who just passed away last summer. They are also doing a fundraiser with the Canadian Cancer Society in the “Reach for a Cure” event. You may visit their web-site to make a donation or just see how they are doing with their goal. When I checked last, they had raised $530.00 – good going girls! – we are all very proud of your accomplishments. Keep up the good work. VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE NEWSY NEIGHBOR With the New Year have come new challenges for us at The Newsy Neighbor. Canada Post has increased our mailing costs dramatically – we have always worked really hard to be able to send out our publication free of charge to everyone in our distribution area. We are really sad and upset that due to the increase in postal rates, we have no choice but to change a few locations. We don’t want to leave anyone out and we really want you to continue to enjoy our publication, so we came up with the idea to offer subscriptions. This was not a easy decision to make but we must stop distribution to: Balzac, Irricana & Cluny Please subscribe by filling out the form below and we will make sure you receive your very own self-addressed copy of The Newsy Neighbor each and every month. Sorry for the change – but only those in the areas listed above will be affected – all others will still receive The Newsy Neighbor every month Free of charge. If you have problems receiving your magazine each month and you are in our free mailing distribution, please email us with your full address. Email: newsyneighbor@gmail.com If you are outside of our mailing distribution and would like to start receiving The Newsy Neighbor, please fill out a subscriptions form. This is a wonderful gift for a friend or relative who you think would enjoy our magazine.
Thank-you to all of you who have already subscribed to The Newsy Neighbor. We will be sending you our magazine in a clear plastic bag and we are calling this our Goodie Bag, because, not only will you be receiving the magazine but other goodies from advertisers and gifts from us. Coupons - samples and other fun and interesting items. It will be like having a Birthday each and every month. What could be better than that. We’re excited. In a Painting, What is a Focal Point or Area ~ What Does It Mean?
According to the dictionary, the word ‘focus’ means a converg. ing of rays or beams to a particular point as in eyesight or vision. The ‘focus’ becomes any central point that is of interest or importance. As the lens of the human eye adjusts to a clear image, it will focus on a particular point based on the distance from that point. To relate this more to what we do without even thinking about it, let’s look at something we do naturally. When we go site seeing in the countryside to take in the ‘views’ we do not have panoramic vision like some modern cameras. We look at a particular object or element, and then turn our head slightly to move our line of vision to another area. Our brain observes this action so quickly and interprets the entire process as a whole picture. As an artist, we want the viewer to observe our painting as a ‘whole’ picture, however there is a big difference between a ‘view’ and an artistic painting. First, paintings tell us stories. A photograph is a photograph. But an award winning photograph is the same as a painting, it tells a story, the photographer has an artist’s eye. As a painter, we usually have an idea or thought that comes across in our painting. This idea is expanded on to tell the ‘story’ that makes the viewer appreciate the painting. This is the essence of the painting that appeals to the viewer in the first place. It is what captures our heart or gets our attention. Like any good story, it will have many players in it and there will be one who stands out from the rest. This person or thing is the one that the story is really about, and will get top billing - this is our Focal Point. Within our paintings, we need to prioritize our players. We need to have them add to the whole story, each in their own way, not out doing each other or over shadowing each other. No one player stands alone; their characters are all interwoven and play off each other to make the story believable and successful. Each player will have a role to play, will have to support and enhance the other, yet still suggest contrast, and variety, and just like the players in a movie, they will add texture and interest. All the elements within a painting do the very same thing; they add interest and texture, all the while making the story very clear and easy to follow. I invite you to explore this further with me. Subject: Grandparents. The things kids say. After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the threeyear-old say with a trembling voice, “Who was THAT?” A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. “We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods.” The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!”

I didn’t know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, “Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!

LOST TREASURES – CHANGED to BODY PARTS
For a while we have being talking about changing Lost Treasures, because we include lots of tips and interesting reading throughout the magazine. We have decided to use the Lost Treasures space, and change the column to a new monthly column called “BODY PARTS.” We could spend a lifetime learning about our bodies and still be a universe away from knowing the true potential of our organs and systems. We will try to expand your mind about your body and perhaps we will all take better care of this truly exceptional gift. For our first column we have chosen to write about your Lungs and Respiratory System.
LUNGS AND RESPIRATORY SYSTEM What is one of the things you do all day, every day, without even thinking about it? You breathe. Breathing air keeps you alive. Your lungs are the largest organ in your body, and they work with your respiratory system to allow you to take in fresh air, get rid of stale air, and even talk. You have two lungs in your chest. The lung on the left hand side of your body is a bit smaller than the lung on the right, because your heart takes up the rest of the room. Your lungs are protected by your rib cage, which is made up of 12 sets of ribs. Beneath your lungs is the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle that works with your lungs to allow you to inhale and exhale. The way the air gets in and out of your lungs is the main stem Bronchi – one to your left lung and one to the right. They then branch off into tubes that get smaller and smaller, like the branches on a tree. The tiniest tubes are called bronchioles, and there are about 30,000 of them in each lung. Each bronchiole is about the same thickness as a hair. At the end of each bronchiole is a special area that leads into clumps of teeny tiny air sacs called alveoli. There are about 600 million of these in your lungs. Each alveolus has a mesh-like covering of very small blood vessels called capillaries – they are so tiny that the cells in your blood need to line up single file just to get through. Wow, all this is going on and we don’t even think about it. The alveoli allow oxygen to pass into your blood, which is super important as all the cells in the body need oxygen every minute of the day. The oxygen enters the body catching a ride on the red blood cells and travels to the heart. The heart then sends the oxygenated blood out to all the cells in the body.

The Newsy Neighbor

Breathing out is just as important because once your cells have all the oxygen they need the blood takes the carbon dioxide and other wastes that must leave the body back through the capillaries and enter the alveoli and leave the same way the fresh air came in, through your mouth and nose via the bronchioles. Your lungs are amazing, keeping your lungs healthy is a very smart idea and yes, you guessed it – do not smoke. Smoking isn’t good for any part of your body, and your lungs especially hate it. Your alveoli get hurt by the chemicals and break down, making it much harder to breathe. Lungs are normally tough and strong, but when it comes to cigarettes, they can be hurt easily. Also, always wear a protective mask to keep chemical fumes from entering your lungs. Now that you know the worst thing for your lungs, the best thing is exercise. Exercise is good for every part of your body, and especially your lungs and heart. When you exercise your lungs breathe more deeply and take in more air, your lungs become stronger and better at supplying your body with the air it needs to succeed. So the next time you feel the urge for that cigarette – think about your beautiful pink lungs and maybe wait a few minutes and go for a walk, even if it’s a short walk around the block, your lungs will thank-you. By: Kathryn Hartwell
Smoking is difficult to quit, but will improve your lung capacity by 20%. Male lungs average 1060 grams, while female lungs average 930 grams.

FAMILY PAGE – APRIL April is The Newsy Neighbor’s 2nd Birthday – HAPPY BIRTHDAY! This month’s Family Page is all about Birthdays – what a happy time. Birthday Parties can be tons of fun especially when you plan them around a theme. I have included two party themes - one for the little boys and one for the little girls in your family. Happy Birthday to all the April babies!
BATMAN BIRTHDAY PARTY
– Party games, activities and decorating ideas. Send out the invitations 2 – 3 weeks before the party. Cut a bat symbol from black card stock paper and write the invitation with a silver gel pen. You could use:“Gotham city needs you!” Create a mood for your party with streamers, Batman balloons and a well-decorated table. Cut Batman symbols from card stock in a variety of sizes, use ribbon to hang from the ceiling, on the walls etc. BATMAN PARTY GAMES AND ACTIVITIES When the children arrive, give every child a cape and mask. Cut large rectangles (about 45” x 35”) from black non-fraying fabric and simply tie two corners together. FOLLOW-THE-JOKER Have the children take turns wearing a Court Jesters hat and leading the other children for a game of follow the leader. BAT PLANES Provide black paper, batman stickers and gel pens for making Bat Planes. Later the children will use these for a game. BATMAN TO THE RESCUE Make a Bat Signal on a large piece of butcher paper, white sheet or cardboard. Have the children take the Bat Planes and form a circle around the signal. When you say “POW” have the children throw their planes towards the bat signal trying to land on it. Play this several times, giving everyone a prize when the game is over. For goodie bags, use batman stickers, comic or colouring books, Batman fruit snacks or other Batman things you can find. POISON IVY FLOATS Make Ice cream floats with green Italian soda, club soda and vanilla Ice cream. Serve in clear glasses, top with whipped cream and drizzle with green syrup. BAT SANDWICHES Make sandwiches with kid’s favourite fillings – PBJ, Ham, Turkey – use a bat-shaped cookie cutter to cut sandwiches. Serve with fruit or veggies and dip.
LET THE BATMAN PARTY BEGIN !!!!
What do you give a 900lb gorilla for his birthday? I don’t know, but you better hope he likes it!

THE PRINCESS AND FROG PARTY Send the invitations 2 – 3 weeks in advance. Use green card stock paper to create lily pads. You could use: ”Hop on down to the Bayou and join our Princess Tiana on her Birthday Adventure!” Green and Pink is the best match for this party theme. Create leaves out of green paper to suggest the swampy bayou. Hang silver streamers from the coiling to add a mystical element. You could make firefly-shaped cookies and decorate them with yellow icing. Cover your table with matching party items and a stuffed frog as a centerpiece wearing a little crown. PRINCESS COLOURING CASTLE Create a castle for the children to decorate, using a large appliance box. You could spray paint it or cover it with butcher paper, before the party. Provide markers and crayons for the children to use for decorating – this is very entertaining for your little princesses. They can colour and play in the castle throughout the party! A SPECIAL WELCOME Announce the guests upon arrival and present them with their very own Royal Princess of Prince Crown. STICK A KISS ON THE FROG Just like pin the tail on the donkey – but draw a frog on a piece of poster paper and cut several lips from card stock and add double sided tape – use the traditional blindfold and watch the fun. MUSICAL LILY PADS Using music from the soundtrack of jazz music and have the children hop around the lily pads sitting when the music stops. Removing a lily pad each time until only one child is left. Children love this game! MAKE A WAND Using piece of Doweling, the children can make their own wand with ribbon and sequins. You could paint the dowels with silver spray paint before the party – let them use their imaginations, that’s what magic wands are for. ROYAL PLAY DOUGH Before the party, make a batch of Play Dough. Provide each child with a ball of dough and some fine glitter and children can work the glitter into the dough and take it home in a Zip-loc bag as a party favour. FROG AND CROWN COOKIES Take your child's favourite cookie recipe and cut into crown or frog shapes (cookie cutters can be found at Toys R Us). Your little guests can decorate his or her own cookies with coloured icing sugar icing before taking them home. CROWN BIRTHDAY CAKE Bake and frost a round cake. Add inverted sugar ice cream cones around the edge to form a crown. Use frosting to attach pink and white gumballs on the tip of each cone. You could also add coloured sprinkles or other pretty edible candy.
MAY ALL YOUR LITTLE PRINCESS DREAMS COME TRUE! PLAY DOUGH RECIPE: 3 Cups of Flour, 2 TBSP. Vegetable Oil, 1 ½ Cups of Salt 1 TBSP. Cream of tartar, 3 Cups of Water, Food colouring – just a few drops for colour. Mix all the ingredients in a large saucepan and cook over low-heat until the dough comes away from the edges of the pan and it becomes difficult to move the spoon. Remove from heat and cool until it can be handled. Place on counter or wax paper, knead 3 – 4 times and store in an airtight container. Nothing better to keep those little hands and minds busy. An imagination is a wonderful thing! www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Children’s Logic: “Give me a sentence about a public servant,” said teacher. The small boy wrote: “The fireman came down the ladder pregnant.” The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. “Don’t you know what pregnant means?” she asked.“Sure,” said the young boy confidently. ‘It means carrying a child.” A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog’s duties.”They use him to keep crowds back,” said one child. “No,” said another. “He’s just for good luck.” A third child brought the argument to a close. “They use the dogs,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrants.”

I’m living hand to mouth on my disability cheques, and I wish I were wealthy beyond comprehension.’ Instantly, her rocking chair turned into solid gold. Cinderella said, ‘Ohh, thank you, Fairy Godmother!’ The fairy godmother replied, ‘It is the least that I can do. What else do you wish for?’ Cinderella looked down at her frail body, and said, ‘I wish I were young and full of the beauty and youth I once had.’ At once, her wish became reality, and her beautiful young body returned. Cinderella felt stirrings inside of her that had been dormant for years. And then the fairy godmother spoke once more, I will offer one last wish; what shall it be?’ Cinderella looked over to the frightened cat in the corner and said, ‘I wish for you to transform Bob, my old cat, into a kind and handsome young man.’ Magically, Bob suddenly underwent so fundamental a change in his biological make-up that, when he stood before her, he was a man so beautiful the likes of him neither she nor the world had ever seen.
The fairy godmother said, ‘Congratulations, Cinderella. Enjoy your new life.’ and with a blazing shock of bright blue electricity, the fairy godmother was gone. For a few eerie moments, Bob and Cinderella looked into each other’s eyes. Cinderella sat, breathless, gazing at the most stunningly perfect man she had ever seen. Then Bob walked over to Cinderella, who sat transfixed in her rocking chair, and held her close in his young muscular arms. He leaned in close, blowing her golden hair with his warm breath as he whispered... ‘Bet you’re sorry you neutered me.’ www.thenewsyneighbor.com

My wife and I were watching “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, “Do you want to make love?” “No,” she answered. So I said, “FINAL ANSWER?” She didn’t even look at me this time, simply saying, “Yes.” So I said, “Then I’d like to use one of my lifelines and phone a friend.”

A HAITI BENEFIT AUCTION SAMARITAN’S PURSE, 20 Hopewell Way, NE MAY 8, 2010 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM (Auction) 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM Emergency Preparedness Activities Bridges of Love Ministry, Samaritan’s Purse (SP) and City Light News are sponsoring a Benefit Auction raising funds for the continuing Haiti relief and recovery efforts. Samaritan’s Purse is a relief organization that supports compassionate endeavors internationally. Bridges of Love facilitates initiatives to care for communities through emergency preparedness. 100% of the funds from the Auction will go directly to Samaritan’s Purse. The vision of Carpe Vita is to facilitate action within the Calgary community to become more informed to the many needs of those countries impacted by major disasters. With emergencies occurring more frequently and with greater severity we will also offer education how each individual, family, business and faith community can be more prepared. May 2 – 8 is Emergency Preparedness Week. We will offer resources and activities from our Public and Private members with information on this important topic. While governments at all levels are working hard to keep Canada safe, everyone has a role to play in being prepared. Natural Disasters may be beyond our control, but there are ways to reduce the risks and possible consequences for whatever emergency we might face – whether natural or human-induced. We are asking for an offering of your “FINEST” for this very worthwhile cause. A special something which perhaps would hurt a little to share. By donating our BEST we are saying we care for those who are suffering and may experience a little of their pain as we part with a ‘Gift of the Heart’. This gift could be a fine piece of china from your Great Grand-mother or a Rolls Royce collecting dust in the garage. Could you imagine the joy which will come from such an offering? We are very fortunate to have ‘BearCat’ Murray as our auctioneer and the Corpus Christi Male Chorale providing entertainment. We anticipate a great time of FUN, FELLOWSHIP (Dessert) and EDUCATION as we join in Carpe Vita to ’seize the life.’ WHAT A PRIVILEGE…WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY Please contact Marg Pollon at 403.263.5683 or email carpevita@bridgesoflove.net to request a Donation Form or see www. bridgesoflove.net. Always Remember Those Who Serve. In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. “How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked the waitress. “Fifty cents,” replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. “Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?” he inquired. By now the waitress was growing impatient. “Thirty-five cents,” she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. “I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left.. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies.. You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

The Price of Children!
The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 years and came up with $160,140.00 for a middle income family. That doesn’t even touch college tuition! But $160,140 isn’t so bad if you break it down. It translates into: $8,896.66 a year, $741.38 a month, or $171.08 a week. That’s a mere $24.24 a day! Just over a dollar an hour! Still, you might think the best financial advice is don’t have children if you want to be “rich.” Actually, it is just the opposite. What do you get for your $160,140? Naming rights. First, middle, and last! Glimpses of God every day. Giggles under the covers every night. More love than your heart can hold. Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs. Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies. A hand to hold usually covered with jelly or chocolate. A partner for blowing bubbles and flying kites. Someone to laugh yourself silly with, no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day. For $160,140, you never have to grow up. You get to: Finger paint, carve pumpkins, play hide-and-seek, never stop believing in Santa Claus. You have an excuse to: Keep reading the Adventures of Piglet and Pooh, watch Saturday morning cartoons, go to Disney movies, and wish on stars. You get to have rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets and collect spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas, hand prints set in clay for Mother’s Day, and cards with backward letters for Father’s Day. For $160,140, there is no greater bang for your buck. You get to be a hero just for: Retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof, taking the training wheels off a bike, removing a splinter, filling a wading pool, coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs, and coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless. You get a front row seat to witness the: First step, First word, First date, and First time behind the wheel. You get to be immortal. You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you’re lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren and great grandchildren. You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match. In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there under God. You have all the power to heal a booboo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits, So . . One day they will like you, love without counting the cost. That is quite a deal for the price!!!!!!! Love & enjoy your children & grandchildren!!!!!!! www.thenewsyneighbor.com

HAIRY SPIDER SEARCHES FOR THE EASTER BUNNY Hairy Spider searched high and low And he thought to himself, ‘If I was the Easter Bunny, where would I go? Would I burrow in the hay field, Or a stall inside the barn? I just can’t seem to find him, I’m so very frustrated, Oh darn. There’s something I need to ask him,’ Hairy said with a heavy sigh. “I wonder if he could make me A special Easter treat, One that is made mostly out of fly. I’m not too fussy about caramel, Ooey gooey fillings or jelly beans. But a big icky sticky fly treat Would be the answer to my spider dreams. I left him a note in all the usual bunny places, Telling him where he could find my webs And all my spider hiding spaces. So, I guess I’ll just have to snuggle down In my cozy warm web bed. With thoughts of the Easter Bunny Hopping through my head. And maybe in the morning when I open all my spider eyes, I will find before me, a wonderful Easter surprise!” WRITTEN BY PATRICIA MULLIN DECEMBER 2007 (EDITED) www.thenewsyneighbor.com

TABLE FOODS THAT HARM DOGS
Good nutrition for us does not always mean good for our dogs. Many foods, including grapes, walnuts and milk can be dangerous for our loving pets. OTHER REALLY BAD STUFF FOR YOUR DOGS: Alcohol can cause breathing difficulties, abnormal blood acidity, coma and death in dogs. Avocadoes contain persin, which can cause digestive upsets and heart problems. Bones may splinter and puncture or obstruct the digestive tract. Broccoli in large amounts can cause illness in dogs. Chocolate, coffee and tea all contain stimulants that cause abnormal heartbeat, seizures and death in dogs. Chocolate is especially dangerous for dogs. Corn on the cob is dangerous. Even though the corn will be digested, chunks of cob may obstruct the digestive tract. Grapes and raisins contain an unknown www.thenewsyneighbor.com
Macadamia nuts contain an unidentified toxin that causes weakness, and swelling in the legs. Walnuts may have a fungus or mold, which causes drooling, jaundice, lack of coordination and vomiting. Milk is difficult for some dogs to digest effectively, which leads to G.I. upsets. Mushrooms and molds can be toxic to dogs. Nutmeg is a seasoning, which causes tremors, seizures and death in dogs. Onions and garlic, both raw and cooked, contain thiosulphate, which can cause digestive upsets, hemolytic anemia and death. Onions contain more of the toxin than garlic does. Raw egg whites contain avidin, which causes B vitamin deficiency, skin problems and skeletal deformities – raw eggs can also harbor salmonella or e.coli. Raw fish especially salmon may contain parasites that are dangerous to dogs. Seeds and fruit pits can cause choking or intestinal blockages and some contain cyanide, which is toxic to dogs. WOMAN’S LOVE POEM
Before I lay me down to sleep, I pray for a man, who’s not a creep. One who’s handsome, smart and strong. One who loves to listen long. One who thinks before he speaks. One who’ll call, not wait for weeks. I pray he’s gainfully employed. When I spend his cash he won’t be annoyed. Pulls out my chair and opens my door. Massages my back and begs to do more. Oh! Send me a man who’ll make love to my mind. Knows what to answer to “how big is my behind?” I pray that this man will love me to no end, And always be my very best friend. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Bottle of Wine A woman and a man are involved in a car accident on a snowy, cold Monday morning; it’s a bad one. Both of their cars are totally demolished, but amazingly neither of them is hurt. God works in mysterious ways. After they crawl out of their cars, the man is yelling about women drivers. The woman says, ‘So, you’re a man. That’s interesting. I’m a woman. Wow, just look at our cars! There’s nothing left, but we’re unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should be friends and live in peace for the rest of our days.’ Flattered, the man replies, ‘Oh yes, I agree completely, this must be a sign from God! But you’re still at fault...women shouldn’t be allowed to drive.’ The woman continues, ‘And look at this, here’s another miracle. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn’t break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune.’ She hands the bottle to the man. The man nods his head in agreement, opens it and drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle, puts the cap back on and hands it back to the man. The man asks, ‘Aren’t you having any?’ The woman replies, ‘No. I think I’ll just wait for the police...’ MORAL OF THE STORY: Women are clever. Don’t mess with them. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Dear Newsy Neighbour; I am a 35-year-old woman and I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s something that’s changed in my relationship with my brother. I’m starting to think that I may have unintentionally hurt his feelings or something. He doesn’t seem depressed or anything, he’s just acting differently around me. I am losing sleep over this. Please help!! - Confused Sister Dear Confused Sister, It sounds like your relationship with your brother is really important to you and that you’d like it to return to the way it was in the past. It’s really important to remember that you are only capable of changing your own behaviors and attitudes – you might influence others, but ultimately the choice for change remains with them. There is any number of possibilities for what might be affecting your brother’s change, and creating the feeling you have that ‘something is wrong’. Trying to guess what the cause might be and hypothesizing about what you might have done is really an effort in frustration and worry. One way that you might gain greater insight into what is going on with your brother is to respectfully and very genuinely approach him in the way he would be most comfortable (in person, by phone or through a letter) and let him know you are concerned about your relationship with him. One benefit to approaching him in person is that you can be present with him as opposed to sending an email whose purpose and tone might be misinterpreted. Remember that it’s entirely up to him whether or not he’s ready to discuss his feelings or the situation with you. You need to respect his need for privacy and not take it personally. You might never know exactly what is going on with him, but if you don’t approach him, you’ll just go on in your current holding and worry pattern – and it sounds like that’s very unproductive for you. A huge percentage of our lives are created through our imagination. We worry, imagine worst-case scenarios and deliberate about what we might have done or what we should have done or how the circumstances of life just didn’t work to our advantage. We blame, speculate and expect others to somehow make things right. We ruminate, fear the worst and wonder why our health is failing; we’re disconnnecting from our family and seem absent-minded and distracted. Chronic worry, jumping to conclusions and mind-reading are a waste of mental space, not to mention the negative time, effort and health affects they have on our bodies. Be direct and respectful. Let him know you are concerned and that you highly value him and your relationship with him. Be prepared to hear anything and don’t judge him for his feelings or be defensive. Just allow his response to sit with you for a while before respectfully responding. And above all else, respect his decision if he doesn’t want to talk about it. Don’t nag or keep bringing up this issue at the next family gathering. Speak your piece and leave the rest up to him. If he doesn’t want to talk, just leave him with the opportunity to approach you in the future whenever he is ready. You might try saying something like, “This is really important to me. When you are ready to talk, I’ll be here to listen.” A great NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) technique is to step into someone else’s existence and relate to the world from their perspective. Perhaps they are a private person. What’s it like to be private? Perhaps they have special needs or are carrying a heavy emotional burden. What would that be like? Close your eyes and experience that unique sensation of ‘being them’ without passing judgement. We all experience the world differently and interpret events differently. This exercise might give you insight into how someone else experiences the world differently from you. If we could all take the time to experience life for just a few moments from another person’s perspective - without judging or criticism - this world might be a kinder place in which to live. Hopefully this helps. Keep us posted on what happens! Take Care, Jody Brown

Question: What is the largest insect? Answer: Acteon Beetle or Longhorn Beetle Useless Fact: There are different ways of measuring the size of an insect, most people would consider the largest insect to be the bulkiest and in that case the largest insect is the Acteaeom Beetle from South America. The male beetles can be 9cms long by 5cms wide by 4cms thick. If you want to measure largest by overall size, check out the South American Longhorn Beetle (Titanus giganteus) these giants can be over 16cms in body length (not including antennae) One other beetle, Dynastes hercules is also well known for reaching 16cms in length though it is not nearly as heavy. The longest insect in the world is the StickInsect (Pharnacia serritypes), the females of which can be over 36cm long. 105 Marina Rd Chestermere, AB Ph: 403-272-9043

Question: Where was the first McDonald’s located?
Answer: Arcada, California Useless Fact: Brothers Dick and Mac McDonald open a hot dog stand called the Airdome in Arcadia, California. In 1940, the brothers move to San Bernardino, California, on Route 66. After noting that almost all of their profits came from hamburgers, the brothers close down the restaurant for several months in 1948 to implement their innovative “Speedee Service System”, a streamlined assembly line for hamburgers.

Question: What is the largest invertebrate? Answer: Colossal Squid Useless Fact: A species of squid reported to be significantly larger than the giant squid, is called the Colossal squid, officially named Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni. In February 2007 a live colossal squid was brought to the surface in Antarctic waters by a New Zealand fishing boat. This enormous squid, which was determined to be a male of the species, was 10 meters (32.8 feet), and weighed 450 kilograms (992 pounds), making it the largest squid (the largest invertebrate) ever captured. What is even more astonishing is that, from what scientists know about squid species in general, there is great sexual dimorphism in squids, with females being significantly larger than the males. If that holds true for the Colossal squid, this male specimen that was captured could very well be dwarfed by a much larger female of the species.

I AM A CABBAGE Hey, happy April! My name is Colin Cabbage.
I’m originally from the Mediterranean region. I grew wild there and was called the 'wild cabbage'. The ancient Greeks and Romans praised me for my medicinal properties, declaring, “It is the cabbage that surpasses all other vegetables." I am often added to soups or stews, and cabbage soup is popular in Central and Eastern Europe - it’s called borscht. I am also used to make cabbage rolls – just stuff me with meat and rice; an East Euro pean and Middle Eastern delicacy. The largest cabbage dish ever made was on December 19th, 2008 in the Macedonian city of Prilep, with 80,191 cabbage rolls weighing 544 kg (1,221 lbs). We had a heck of a good party that day! You can pickle me to make German Sauerkraut, Chinese suan cai and Korean Kim chi. I am an excellent source of vitamin C and also contain significant amounts of glutamine, an amino acid that has antiinflammatory properties. In European folk medicine, cabbage leaves were used to treat acute inflammation. A paste of raw cabbage was placed in a cabbage leaf and wrapped around the affected area to reduce discomfort. Fresh cabbage juice has been shown to promote rapid healing of peptic ulcers. The most cabbage in the world is produced in China, followed by India and then the Russian Federation. During World War II, “kraut” was an ethnic slur for a German soldier or civilian. German cabbage (kohl) made into a salad (salat) became in American English “cole slaw”. In England, cabbage is a slang word for cash. I am generally inexpensive and a longstanding dietary staple throughout the world. I actually increase production of enzymes involved in detoxification, the cleaning process through which your body eliminates harmful compounds. Eat me as often as possible! I have a natural synergy that optimizes your cells ability to disarm and clear free radicals and toxins, including potential carcinogens, which may be why I appear to lower your risk of cancer more effectively than any other vegetable or fruit. In addition to my cancer-preventive phytonutrients, I am an excellent source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps protect cells from harmful free radicals. No kidding - just 3 to 5 serving a week of one cup will lower your risk of cancer. I’m not bragging but there are studies showing I can lower the risk of breast, lung, colon, ovarian and bladder cancers. I am yummy and I am wonderful, I have included a few recipes for you to enjoy. Remember, eat me 3 to 5 times a week and try to look after yourself better. Bye for now. By Kathryn Hartwell Colin cabbage. Selecting your Cabbage
Look for solid, heavy heads of cabbage. Avoid cabbage that has discolored veins or worm damage. Do not buy precut cabbage, the leaves may have already lost their vitamin C. Look for stems that are healthy looking, closely trimmed, and are not dry or split.
Storing your Cabbage
Keep cabbage cold. This helps it retain its vitamin C content. Place the whole head of cabbage in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator. Page 44

APRIL RECIPE PAGE EASY CABBAGE SOUP
Yummy! These flavourful cabbage rolls are delicious with potatoes. YUMMY CABBAGE ROLLS
1 Large head of cabbage 1 to 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef ½ cup instant rice or cooked rice ½ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 egg, lightly beaten ½ teaspoon cinnamon 1 can (10 ½ ounce) tomato soup, undiluted 1 can (14.5 ounces) tomatoes ½ cup finely chopped onion Tear the leaves off the cabbage and cook in boiling water until wilted enough to be flexible. Cool. Mix ground beef, rice, egg, onion and salt, pepper and cinnamon together. Form a few tablespoons of the mixture into a cylinder and roll in a cabbage leaf. Combine the soup and tomatoes in a large baking dish with lid and place cabbage rolls in Dish. Bake for 1 ½ to 2 hours. Who said cabbage rolls were hard – they just take a bit of time to prepare, but in the end they are worth it. My mom use to pour tomato juice over the rolls instead of using the soup and tomatoes. Pick your preference.

DEPRESSION & PAIN & WEIGHT GAIN
My next few articles will stress the importance of weight loss. I myself, have found that over the last five years, I have slowly put on extra pounds. The terrible car truck accident we had, left me unable to walk for some time, and then it left me with pain in my foot, ankle and knee. To move at first was unbearable, but I knew if I gave in to the pain, and just sat and watched TV, this was going to be my future. I love life!!!! My goal was to walk again and get rid of the wheelchair, crutches and walker. It took me months and months doing a little every day, then the next day crying due to the pain I had from exertion. Then, back to walking the next day again, and on and on, until one day, the crying stopped and I could walk without aid of some device. Where I am going with this story is, if you want to do something bad enough, push yourself forward every day, you CAN do it!!! Throughout the five years, I wanted to walk like everyone else, I still could only do a little, and then going back to lying down or sitting and watching TV for the balance of my time. On top of that all, I love the taste of “good” food. I never really overate, but what I would do is “pick and nibble” all day long. Chocolate bars have always been one of my rewards in life and cheesecake, one of my favorite desserts. I never “pigged” out on them, but I would have them when my life wasn’t going the way it should. After five years of taking care of my injured ego, and my depression, I stepped on the scale and saw that I now weighed more than ever before, and I knew it was not good for my legs. DEPRESSION is another cause of weight gain. You do not have to be on depression pills. Nowadays, in our fast moving society, mild-to-serious depression is the main cause of weight gain. You reward yourself, or make yourself feel better with foods and snacks that you like. 35% of weight gain is from this issue alone. On top of that, if someone mentions that you have put on a few extra pounds, it is like getting your face slapped! Then we eat more, then we see ourselves putting on more weight. How can I stop this habit? The reason I say habit, is because we have an “addiction” to food! Addicts need their dope or their alcohol, and the rest of us who are overweight, need our food! It’s not having sufficient money or the stress from mates or children, look at Oprah Winfrey as an example. In my books, she has it all ... but she admits that she is addicted to food. Nobody’s life is perfect and without stress, we just need to get a handle on this. We need to really want to “become slimmer”. Find YOUR reason WHY you need to want this more than anything right now and if you have found your reason, start today! My suggestion to start off with, is .... do a full body cleanse. Nature’s Sunshine has a product called BOD-E-KLENZ, which cleanses the body of fecal matter (in other words “poop”) and prepares your body for general weight loss. The average person carries 25-40 lbs of “poop”. Get rid of that to start off with! It will take you a month to do this, but it will also improve your health immensely. Start cutting your portions and walk more, and then WALK MORE!!! I cannot stress this enough. You can join a gym, but you really do not have to. You don’t have to strengthen your muscles, you need to drop pounds. WALK!!! It’s spring ... enjoy nature! Your depression and attitude changes, just by walking and breathing. We can ALL do this ... RIGHT?? Just walk and breathe ... walk and breathe! If you want to use the body cleanse, I can help you with that. Call Marg at (403) 901-0160. Page 46

A WOMAN’S WEEK AT THE GYM
This is dedicated to anyone attempting to get into a regular workout routine.
Dear Diary, For my birthday this year, my husband purchased a special gift, for one week of personal training at the local health club. Although I am still in great shape, I was a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago; I decided it would be fun. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. Friends and family all encouraged me and seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club also encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress. MONDAY: Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Christo waiting for me. He is something of a Greek god with blond hair, dancing eyes, and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!! Christo gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skilful way in which he conducted his aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring! Christo was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time he was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!! TUESDAY: I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Christo made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then he put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. His rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT! It’s a whole new life for me. WEDNESDAY: The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn’t try to steer or stop. Christo was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. His voice is a little too perky for that early in the morning and when he scolds, he gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying. My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Christo put me on the stair monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Christo told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. He said some other crap too. THURSDAY: Butthole was waiting for me with his vampirewww.thenewsyneighbor.com

like teeth exposed as his thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn’t help being a half an hour late-- it took me that long to tie my shoes. He took me to work out with dumbbells.
When he was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. He sent some skinny witch to find me. Then, as punishment, he put me on the rowing machine - which I sank.
FRIDAY: I hate that demon Christo more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anaemic, anorexic, little aerobics instructor. If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat him with it. Christo wanted me to work on my triceps. I don’t have any triceps! And if you don’t want dents in the floor, don’t hand me the darn barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich. The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn’t it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director? SATURDAY: Satan left a message on my answering machine in his grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing his voice made me want to smash the machine with my planner; however, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel. SUNDAY: I’m having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my husband will choose a gift for me that is fun - like a root canal or a hysterectomy. I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!! The Newsy Neighbor

FACE SHAPES AND MAKEUP
Face shapes do fall into some common categories, although they are all unique. How you apply your makeup, will be dependent on the face shape you are born with. DETERMINING YOUR FACE SHAPE
In order to understand how to best use makeup for your face shape, you first need to determine what shape it is. Start by standing in front of a mirror with your hair pulled back completely from your face. Use a bar of soap, lipstick or dry erase pencil, to draw the outline of your face in the mirror.. You may be surprised at how your face does take on a distinct shape., DEFINING THE SHAPE: How your face actually appears to the outside world will be affected by makeup and your hair style. You can use subtle techniques to enrich your face shape as you cannot change your genetics. To restructure the appearance of your face through makeup, contouring is a common practice. You will need a light and dark skin-color shade of makeup. The best type is a powder formula in two shades or a “bronzer” for the darker shade. The use of blush is also helpful. When contouring, the most important steps are to blend, blend, and blend. I cannot emphasis this enough ... blending is crucial! Otherwise, you will look like you are wearing “face paint” instead of your natural face. Also ... work with your hair dresser! A skilled stylist will know the best ways to cut your hair, based on the shape of your face. THERE ARE FIVE MAIN FACE SHAPES: 1) Oval. The oval face shape is considered to be the ideal. A shape that is perfectly symmetric with broader cheeks that taper in at the forehead and chin.. If you are lucky enough to possess this face, enjoy! Your face can support most makeup trends and needs no contouring. 2) Round. The round face shape is fuller and more youthful. The distance from the forehead to the chin tends to be short, while being wider from cheek to cheek. A round face has full cheeks and a rounded chin. To enhance the appearance of a round face, you can use some basic contouring. Place your highlight color on the forehead, under the eyes, the top of the cheeks and the center of your chin. Then use the darker shade for the temples, cheeks and jaw. Blend. 3) Square. The main difference between a round face and a square face, is usually seen at the jaw line. When looking at the shape on your mirror, see if the corners are sharper rather than round. Also, a square face has the same width from the edges of the forehead, across the cheeks, and from jaw to jaw. To soften the square face, you can highlight the center of the forehead, under the eyes, and the very tip of the chin. Then, darken the hairline by the temples and the chiseled corners of the jaw. Finish the look with blush on the “apples” of the cheeks. (The “apples” of your cheeks are the section of the cheeks, that tend to extend out from the general area of the face, when the individual is smiling or laughing. For many years, the apples of the cheeks have been of special interest to anyone involved with the use or manufacture of facial makeup products, as well as persons involved in theatrical performances. This is because of the impact that the apples of your cheeks can have in displaying emotions.) 4) Heart. The heart shaped face is wide at the forehead, but then curves down to a point at the chin. To soften the lower half of the face, you will highlight the chin, forehead and under the eyes, while also darkening the temples and cheeks. 5) Long. Most women with a long face, know they have it. They learned early on in life, that they could not wear their hair long and straight without looking stretched out. The long face is characterized by high cheek bones, a raised forehead, and a distinct jaw line. In order to shorten this striking face shape, all it takes is a little bronzer on the chin. You can also apply extra blush on the “apples” of the cheeks, to bring out the distinctive cheek bones. Call me for your “free” 1 hour skin care/color consultation at (403) 934-9638. I would love to get together with you! Happy Easter!!! Page 48

Acupuncture to Stop Smoking - Does It Work? by: Peter Gray
For centuries, the Chinese have been using acupuncture to bring the body back into balance. Applying small thin needles of different lengths and inserting them into the skin at various depths and precise pressure points, practitioners claim that paths in the body are opened up to free energy and bring the body back into equilibrium. Traditional Chinese medicine has usually been used to reduce pain and distress but because the practice has become more widespread in the Western world, traditional doctors are using it as a supplement to other techniques in the treatment of various conditions and behavioral modifications such as losing weight and stopping smoking. For as long as there’s been acupuncture, people have been struggling with addictive problems. So can acupuncture be used successfully to treat these harmful habits? Can you quit smoking with acupuncture? The simple answer is yes. The difficult part is actually doing it. Smoking and its related diseases are considered to be responsible for around 400,000 deaths in the United States each year and the estimated cost in health care reaches over $150 billion dollars ($150,000,000,000!) annually. These figures alone should induce people who smoke to plan to finish with it. But tobacco is a powerful habit and not so easy to eliminate. All the same, with the combined use of smoking cessation methods, you can stop smoking with acupuncture. Using acupuncture as a complement to either prescribed or over-the-counter medications or techniques to quit smoking is attacking the issue from every direction. While one approach may be treating the addiction traditionally, acupuncture can reopen the channels and pathways in the body to allow for proper blood flow and energy to work on reducing cravings and decrease the pain related to withdrawal symptoms, thus allowing one to stop smoking with acupuncture. The main thing however, might not be the specific approach used to give up smoking, but the act of giving up itself. It’s long been recognized that cigarette smoking is awful for you. There are an estimated 4800 different chemical substances in cigarettes and - according to the Center for Disease Control - at the least 69 of these are considered as causes of cancer. Aside from these dangers to the smokers themselves, secondhand smoke, according to the EPA, the Environmental Protection Agency, accounts for up to 3000 deaths of non-smokers each year. The method chosen to stop smoking is less important than the quitting itself. Whether one chooses to give up smoking with acupuncture, go “cold turkey” or use prescribed medication and attend support groups, the goal is to get tobacco out of your life.. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

One day I had lunch with some friends. Jim, a short, balding golfer type about 80 years old, came along with us. When the menus were presented, we ordered salads, sandwiches, and soups; except for Jim who said, “Ice Cream, please. Two scoops, chocolate.” I wasn’t sure my ears heard right, and the others were aghast. “Along with heated apple pie,” Jim added, completely unabashed. We tried to act quite nonchalant, as if people did this all the time. But when our orders were brought out, I didn’t enjoy mine. I couldn’t take my eyes off Jim as his pie a-la-mode went down. The other guys couldn’t believe it. They ate their lunches silently. The next time I went out to eat, I called and invited Jim. I lunched on white meat tuna. He ordered a parfait. I smiled and he asked if he amused me. I answered, “Yes, you do, but also you confuse me. How come you order rich desserts, while I feel I must be sensible?`` He laughed and said “I’m tasting all that is possible. This year I realized how old I was. (He grinned) I haven’t been this old before. So, before I die, I’ve got to try those things that for years I had ignored. I haven’t smelled all the flowers yet. There are too many trout streams I haven’t fished. There’s more fudge sundaes to enjoy, there are too many golf courses I haven’t played. I’ve not laughed at all the jokes. I’ve missed a lot of sporting events and potato chips with pop. I want to wade again in water and feel ocean spray on my face. I want to sit in a country church once more and thank God for His grace. I want peanut butter every day spread on my morning toast. I want un-timed long distance calls to the folks I love the most. I haven’t cried at all the movies yet, or walked in the morning rain. I need to feel the wind on my face. I want to be in love again. So, if I choose to have dessert, instead of having dinner, then should I die before night fall, I’d say I died a winner, because I missed out on nothing. I filled my heart’s desire. I had that final chocolate mousse before my life expired.” With that, I called the waitress over. “I’ve changed my mind,” I said. “I want what he is having only add some extra whipped cream!” www.thenewsyneighbor.com

WHY SHOULD I USE A MORTGAGE BROKER??? For years, people wishing to purchase or refinance a home have always gone to the same place…their bank. Is this the best option for everyone? Not necessarily, but it is the only option that most people have been aware of, until now. In the past, mortgage brokers were only called upon in cases where the client(s) did not qualify under traditional criteria, or they needed money quickly, and hence had to borrow from a “loan shark”. While mortgage brokers still assist those clients with bruised credit, the vast majority of our clientele is made up of clients just like yourself, with good job stability, and a solid credit history. But what truly separates a mortgage broker apart from the traditional banks? There are several advantages to using a mortgage broker... Firstly, rate…rate…rate! When you go to your bank, more times than not, you will be put into an uncomfortable situation of negotiating with your banker for a better rate. When you work with a broker, if you qualify for the best rates (based on your credit history), you automatically get the best rates. And the best part…it doesn’t cost you a thing. There is no charge for our service and no negotiation required. Just remember, even a ¼% lower rate can save you thousands of dollars over the course of your term in interest. Secondly, choice. When you go to your bank, you only have their options to choose from. Mortgage brokers have access to over 50 lenders, including many of the chartered banks, so we have access to a vast array of mortgage products to suit your particular needs and goals. There can be subtle differences, but better prepayment privileges can be the reaLocated in Strathmore Lakes. prefer or at the very least offer you the convenience of arranging your financing via phone, fax and/or email. Generally speaking, you can be pre-approved for mortgage financing in the same day you apply. Finally, mortgage brokers are able to offer their clients more relaxed qualifying criteria. Whereas banks tend to turn you away if you don’t fit into their perfect client criteria. As well, we are able to assist clients with less than perfect credit, non-provable income sources and clients who have very little or nothing to put down on the purchase of their new home. As with any product or service, there are always many companies to choose from. Be sure when selecting a mortgage broker, that they have their proper accreditation. Spring has sprung! (Dare I suggest…?!) By Kait au Lait
We’ve lost an hour of sleep every night, and the night seem to go on for hours now. 7:00 seems like 5:00, and I find myself wondering where the evening has gone. I find myself doing my mom-chores into the night. We’ve been spending a large amount of time outside with the children. We’ll do different things; long family walks, playing in the yard, going to the park, tossing the football or kicking the soccer ball around. It’s been very enriching, considering the amount of time we spent hunched around the television not talking to one another for the winter. This leads me to one of our recent indoor activities; R-Spot and I have a yearly spring tradition. It’s something she and I have done since she was 2 years old. We call it the “Easter Baggie” program. When R-Spot was little, we started baking to supplement the needs of a community out reach van. Every Saturday and Sunday, we would bake anywhere from 300 cookies to 150 muffins and 100 scones; packaging them individually and bringing them down to the centre that the van ran out of every Monday morning. My girlfriends often came to help after R-Spot met her 7:00 bedtime, which eventually became a weekly tradition for us to spend some “girl time” together. That year, when spring rolled around; I decided that I didn’t want to bake Easter themed cookies. I went to the store and picked up $150 of candy, baggies, little toys and that gnarly string garbage that embeds itself into your carpet. The kid at the till said, “This is an awful lot of candy for one lady, are you a school teacher or something?” I explained my intentions to him, to which he responded (in a sing-song voice), “Someone’s going to Heaveeeeeen…” I smiled to myself as I walked back to my car. It was nice to see a positive reaction to our little activity. When I got home, I divided the candy and toys up into different bowls and waited for my girlfriends to arrive. That night, with our little girls, we made 40 gift bags for the out reach van; we took it one step further and made 10 additional baggies for the women’s shelter. It was sad to think about small children waking up on Easter morning to find nothing from the Easter Bunny. Easter holds more meaning that chocolate and toys; it speaks to re-birth and hope; with that thought in mind, we ensured to add extra love to each one of those 10 packages. Since that year, even after having left the Yukon, R-Spot and I continue to make our gift baggies for one social service or another. This year was the second year we provided baggies to the Women’s Crisis Shelter in Strathmore, and the first year A-Dawg and C-dot helped us. I’m thankful. I’m a woman who “has”. I have a beautiful home, a working vehicle, a job, beautiful children and a partner who love and respects me. Even on my worst day, I still have the best life. It’s my social responsibility to not only help and care for those in this world who don’t have, but also pass that attribute on to my children; no matter how small or irrelevant the gestures we make may seem to some. http://www.itwillseldommakesense.blogspot.com Page 58

BBQ RULES It is important for you to know the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion: Routine... (1) The woman buys the food. (2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert. (3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - drink in hand. (4) The woman remains outside the compulsory three meter exclusion zone where the exuberance of testosterone and other manly bonding activities can take place without the interference of the woman. Here comes the important part: (5) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL. More routine.... (6) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery. (7) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is looking great. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another drink while he flips the meat Important again: (8) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN. More routine... (9) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table. (10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes. And most important of all: (11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts. (12) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed ‘her night off ‘ and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s just no pleasing some women!

THE JOHN MORRIS WAY On March 13th, 2010 our very own Chestermere hero John Morris was honored at the Chestermere Recreation Centre. John Morris was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 16th, 1978 and it seems - was destined to be a star. On February 27th at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics team Martin won the Gold Metal with a score of 6-3 in the final against Thomas Ulsrud of Norway. I’m sure everyone in Chestermere were glued to their TV watching the final game and I know all our hearts were filled with pride then the crowd sang “Oh, Canada” in honor of this special team. John, we are all so proud you are our very special Chestermere resident, you will always be remembered when we drive down your street. What a special honor to have JOHN MORRIS WAY named for your incredible accomplishment. John is truly committed to the residence of Chestermere by being a part of the fire department – we know we are in good hands with John and all the hard working fire fighters of our department. For being the “Bad Boy of Curling” you look pretty darn good to us. The Town of Chestermere thanks you; the Country of Canada thanks you – Thank-you for letting us all share this great joy with you.
