In a large saucepan - Heat Stock Add margarine, carrots, celery, and onion. bring to a boil or until vegetables are softened. Stir in flour 1 - 2 minutes. Add remaining ingredients, except black pepper and ground ginger. After bringing to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove Bay Leaf. Puree through Food Processor. Add pepper and ginger. Reheat and serve. (Optional - garnish with swirl of Sour Cream or Chopped Chives). Submitted by thegodsmans

The 84 year old Bride
The local news station was interviewing an 84 year old lady because she had just gotten married – for the 4th time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 84, and then about her new husband’s occupation. “He’s a funeral director,” she answered. “Interesting,” the newsman thought. He then asked her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little about her first 3 husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she first married a banker when she was in her early 20’s, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40’s, later on a preacher when in her 60’s, and now, in her 80’s a funeral director. The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers. “Easy, son,” she smiled. “I married one for the money,.. two for the show.. three to get ready... and four to go!

FROM THE PUBLISHERS February 14th is Valentine’s Day (don’t forget your sweetie!) and we at The Newsy Neighbor have decided to make our theme for this Issue “The Month of Love”. We Love all the support and the wonderful notes and comments from you all. We really want all of you to be a part of our success and growth, so we have come up with a couple of really exciting projects we are working on. The first one is “The 1st Newsy Neighbor Cook Book” and we would Love for you to send in your best and favourite recipes to be included – make sure you include your name and where you live (town or hamlet) as they will be published in the Cookbook! It will be so fun, and a lot like “The Newsy Neighbor magazine” with funny stories, jokes and interesting reading. We really want it to be very unique and different – not like a traditional Cookbook – so we would Love to have your help in putting this together. Canadian Jobs A high school physics teacher once told the students that while one grasshopper on the railroad tracks wouldn’t slow a train, a billion of them would. With that thought in mind, read the following: Good idea . . . one light bulb at a time . . . . I can verify this because I was in an American home improvement the other day and I was looking at the hose attachments . They were all made in China . The next day I was in Home Hardware and just for the fun of it I checked the hose attachments there. They were made in Canada. Start looking. In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - even their job. So, after reading this email, I think this lady is on the right track . Let’s get behind her! She said: My grandson likes chocolate candy . I noticed, though, that most brands are marked “Made in Mexico” now. I do not buy these brands anymore . I then found out my favourite toothpaste is made in Mexico as well. I have since switched to Crest... You have to read the labels on everything. This past weekend I was at Wal-mart . I needed 60W light bulbs . I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled, “Everyday Value. “ I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The name-brand bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in Mexico and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - Canada at a company in Ontario.

When I was a kid, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my mom and ask me how my day was at school. I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that biscuit and eat every bite! When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I’ll never forget what he said: “Honey, I love burned biscuits.” Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, “Your Momma put in a hard day at work today and she’s real tired. And besides - a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!” You know, life is full of imperfect things... and imperfect people. I’m not the best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just like everyone else. What I’ve learned over the years is that learning to accept each other’s faults - and choosing to celebrate each other’s differences is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship. And that’s my prayer for you today: that you will learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God. Because in the end, He’s the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn’t a deal-breaker! We could extend this to any relationship. In fact, understanding is the base of any relationship; be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship! “Don’t put the key to your happiness in someone else’s pocket. LOST TREASURES – FEBRUARY
I just finished reading the new Dan Brown book – The Lost Symbol, a very interesting and enjoyable book. Part of the book was about Noetic Sciences, which is an exploration into the nature and potentials of consciousness. Noetic sciences explore the “inner cosmos” of the mind and how it relates to the “outer cosmos” of the physical world. I went on my computer to check it out and there is actually a Noetic Sciences Institute. I have always been interested in how the mind works – the brain not only controls what you think and feel, but also how you learn and remember, the way you move and talk, the beating of your heart and the digestion of your food. Actually, the brain controls all of your body functions through your nervous system. When was the last time you even thought about your brain? Who actually stops to think about this incredible little part of your body which weighs 3 pounds? I feel weird just thinking about my brain – because my brain is doing the thinking as I am thinking about it. WEIRD! Now, the reason I am writing about your brain in Lost Treasures is because it could be a Lost Treasure if you don’t look after it properly. The foods you eat directly affect the performance of your brain. The three most important things for your brain are nutritious foods, water and oxygen. Studies have shown that most people are permanently partially dehydrated. This means that their brain is working considerably below its capacity and potential. Water makes up 83% of the blood and acts as a transport system delivering nutrients to the brain and eliminating toxins. Neurotransmitters are found in the food we eat, hence why some foods are called “brain foods”. Protein found in meat, fish, milk and cheese is a brain food. Grains, fruits and vegetables are key sources of carbohydrates, which break down into glucose, which is the brain’s primary source of energy. Oily fish like salmon, sardines, trout, tuna, mackerel and anchovies are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to the optimum performance of your brain. Dear Alcohol, First & foremost, let me tell you that I’m a huge fan of yours. As my friend, you always seem to be there when needed. The perfect post-work cocktail, a beer at the game, and you’re even around in the holidays, hidden inside chocolates as you warm us when we’re stuck in the midst of endless family gatherings. However, lately I’ve been wondering about your intentions. While I want to believe that you have my best interests at heart, I feel that your influence has led to some unwise consequences: 1. Phone calls: While I agree with you that communication is important, I question the suggestion that any conversation of substance or necessity takes place after 2 a.m. Why would you make me call those ex-boyfriends/girlfriends when I know for a fact they do not want to hear from me? 2. Eating: Now, you know I love a good meal, but why do you suggest that I eat a taco with chilli sauce, along with a big Italian meatball and some stale chips (washed down with WINE & topped off with a Kit Kat after a few cheese curls & chilli cheese fries)? I’m an eclectic eater, but I think you went too far this time. 3. Clumsiness: Unless you’re subtly trying to tell me that I need to do more yoga to improve my balance, I see NO need to hammer the issue home by causing me to fall down. It’s completely unnecessary, and the black & blue marks that appear on my body mysteriously the next day are beyond me. Similarly, it should never take me more than 45 seconds to get the front door key into the lock. 4. Furthermore: The hangovers have GOT to stop. This is getting ridiculous. I know a little penance for our previous evening’s debauchery may be in order, but the 3pm hangover immobility is completely unacceptable. My entire day is shot. I ask that, if the proper precautions are taken (water, vitamin B, bread products, aspirin) prior to going to sleep/passing out face down on the kitchen floor with a bag of popcorn, the hangover should be minimal & in no way interfere with my daily activities. Alcohol, I have enjoyed our friendship for some years now & would like to ensure that we remain on good terms. You’ve been the invoker of great stories, the provocation for much laughter, and the needed companion when I just don’t know what to do with the extra money in my pockets. In order to continue this friendship, I ask that you carefully review my grievances above & address them immediately. I will look for an answer no later than Thursday at 3pm (prehappy hour) on your possible solutions, and hopefully we can continue this fruitful partnership. Thank you, One of your many fans P.S. REDNECK ALBERTA FARM KID in the Marine Corps Dear Ma and Pa, I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled. I was restless at first because you get to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. But I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there’s warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food, plus yours, holds you until noon when you get fed again. It’s no wonder these city boys can’t walk much. We go on ‘route marches,’ which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it’s not my place to tell him different. A ‘route march’ is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks.

The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don’t bother you none. This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don’t know why.. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don’t move, and it ain’t shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don’t even load your own cartridges They come in boxes. Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain’t like trying to castrate them young bulls at home. I’m about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lagoon. I only beat him once... He joined up the same time as me, but I’m only 5’6’ and 130 pounds and he’s 6’ 6” and near 300 pounds dry.

Feel The Love Yes! She’s back! Kait au Lait has made her return! But it’s with a heavy heart. I’m saddened by the devastation in Haiti – as is my little girl, R-Spot, (she cried seeing the pictures on the internet) so she decided to start a change drive. GOLD HARD CASH Could you use a little extra cash in your pocket these days? Say hello to the “gold party”. With the current high price of gold, women across Canada are participating in this growing trend, cashing in on forgotten trinkets - from school rings, unmatched earrings and broken, tangled chains to tokens of love-gone-bad - and are getting paid on the spot. Parties are organized through companies such as Gold Party Princess, in Toronto, and Gold Party Canada in cities from Vancouver to Montreal. Throwing a gold party is easy. Hosts simply invite friends and family to their homes and provide refreshments, and the experts appraise guests’ unwanted gold and buy it right then and there. Your former jewelry eventually goes to a refinery, where it is melted down and recycled. “We make sure guests understand that they won’t see a piece of theirs sitting in the display case of a store,” says Shawn Zimmerman, co-owner of Gold Party Canada. Payouts vary, depending on the pieces, and some lucky guests take home hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The host gets a cut, too - usually a commission on total sales or a fixed amount per guest, including a reimbursement for food and drink. Josh on a Ledge
~ A Short Story by Aviva Bel’ Harold The first thing that Josh noticed as his consciousness pulled away from one of his more fascinating dreams was that the air around him felt all too open. A light breeze was playing with his cropped hair and tickling his bare arms. The air also carried that feel of moister and the scent of fresh flowing water. Not quite sure if he was fully awake or if these things were still part of his subconscious, Josh took a moment longer to open his eyes. Instead he shifted slightly so that he could roll from his stomach to his side, like he did most morning as he woke up. Only the feel under his arm was a foreign one. Tiny pieces of sand against something smooth and cold like marble. The scratchy sensation was registered just as his arm fell over the side of his bed – only it wasn’t a bed at all. His arm dangled only for a second before Josh’s eyes flew open and he scrambled up into a sitting position with his back to a sheer cliff face and his feet were mere inches from the edge of an unfathomable drop. Many ideas raced through Josh’s head, none of them quite believable. The only logical one didn’t even make sense. He wanted to believe that he was still dreaming, but the scraps on his arm still stung dispelling that hope. So if it was true and he really was here on this two foot by seven foot ledge, what now? He snuck his head over the edge for a fraction of a second before he pulled it back snug against the rough cliff side. In that moment he’d seen enough to know exactly where he was. Almost half way down – he’d recognized the small stream that ribboned past the rather non-substancel mountain; Fuller’s Peak. Non-subsancial unless you found yourself half way down it without a parashoot or climbing equipment. Meaning he was really stuck! He had woken just before the sun’s first rays had hit the cliff where he was. As the sun began to climb it dried the dew that had covered the grass by the river bank far below. Soon Josh found himself surrounded by a thick mist. This was now the time he’d normally be waking to get ready for school. School for Josh had not been an anticipated experience. In his mind there was only one reason to go: a girl. Soopy was her name and thought Josh was aware that many of the other kids made fun of such an oddball name Josh loved the sound of it; Soopy...Soopy...SOOPY! For eight years he had endured the experience of school just to have the opportunity to get a glance of her. But only a glance because as popular as Josh found himself he was rather a shy boy. www.thenewsyneighbor.com
Shy and a lot more odd than anyone seemed to notice. Or perhaps it wasn’t him who was odd but for sure strange things did seem to happen around him. Take this cliff thing for instance, he thought as the misty air gave him a light chill but he dared not shiver because in the mist his situation seemed far more parrioulus. There was the time when he’d had a rough morning making him miss his buss and he ran as fast as he could to school only to find that he was an hour early. It had been easy enough to accept that he’d misjudged the time on the home clock, only when he called home he heard his own voice answer, “This is Josh.” Of course he hung up and as he did he remembered that just that morning he’d received a call from school but when he answered they’d just hung up on him... There was also the time when Jan’s cat had fallen down the laundry shoot and everyone was sure it had broken it’s paw but when Josh picked it up it stopped it’s mournful mewing and jumped down to the floor to shake its self out and go on its merry way. Josh could recount more, so many more, but most were explained way with a trick of the light or a misjudged moment. Even the time when the whole community had a power outage and Jan – who was terrified of the dark, had screamed so loud that just for something to do Josh had flicked the light switch. The lights came back on. He’d been the only one in the house to notice that theirs was the only house with power. Everyone thought he was mistaken when he explained this fact after. He was seven years old that year. In fact that’s the first time something strange happened. And now ten years later he found himself on a cliff wondering how he’d gotten himself here... This makes selecting a dog who will be suitable for your family a decision not to be taken lightly. Because of the ways in which some breeds were mixed, it enabled these dogs to keep their characteristics, but change their sizes. Some were smaller and others larger. Because of the large number of breeds now available, you need to give consideration to each breeds characteristics, from temperament to size. Due to the crossbreeding, each dog will share at least some of the original characteristics before crossbreeding. For example, if the original breed had a hunting nature, this instinct could have been reduced in the crossbreeding to give a more placid temperament more con ducive to the dog fitting in with your family life. Some dog types: Hunting (includes Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels and Retrievers), Pastoral Dogs (Herding dogs, Drovers, Livestock Guardian Dogs) Sled Dogs: (German Spitz, Eurohound).
In the past it was uncommon for dogs to be house pets and for that reason, you need to ensure that you obtain a dog with the right temperament for you and your family. Dogs were mainly working dogs as described in the previous paragraph. It is essential that you ascertain what is known as the genetic code the dog carries in which you are interested in taking home to your family, or whatever your specific requirement of the dog is. The code refers to the breeds type of work. If your requirement is a pet dog who will play with your children, it is essential that it has the right temperament. In the small dog category the Beagle is considered to be a great family dog and will show affection to the whole fam ily. They can be playful and mischievous in a mild way and are considered to be a great dog for children. Other dogs include king Charles Spaniel and Pug Dogs. Both of these breeds are considered to be gentle and affectionate. If you are seeking a medium size dog the Labrador Retriever, which are extremely popular in the US, make very good family pets and respond well to training. You will also find that the small-to-medium-size Cocker Spaniel gets on very well with children. Another retriever dog to consider is the Golden Retriever, which is reliable and very responsive to training. If you are seeking a smaller pet just for company, you could look in toy dog species which include American Cocker Spaniel, Australian Terrier, Chinese Crester (Powder Puff), English Toy Spaniel, Japanese Chin, Yorkshire Terrier, Poodle (Miniature). If your needs are for having a good faithful dog these dogs should be considered: Airdale Terrier (also likes to take part in the family fun), Basset Hound (also loves kids), Beagle (suitable for active families), Irish Setter (Good family dog. Is eager to please you). If you consider the points raised in this article, you should be able to choose the right type of pet dog for your particular needs and acquire a great friend for yourself and your family throughout the dogs life.You will also not be adding to the unwanted dogs discarded because their owners did not research their requirements properly when purchasing the dog as a puppy. Mental Influence That Pet Grooming May Have on Your Pet by Damian Cross Have you ever wondered how grooming your pet may affect him mentally and emotionally? In most cases, regardless of what species your pet is, his emotional and mental health will be directly represented by his physical appearance. A clean pet that is well taken care of and maintains a certain level of hygiene will not only look good, but will reflect a healthier and emotionally stable state of mind. A dog with infected ears and long nails, or a cat with a dirty coat full of hair knots and mats are in desperate need of grooming. These creatures will probably not be too happy about their appearance. They do not only reflect a physical condition of neglect, but also a detoriated emotional state which is closely related to the relationship they have with their owner. A special bond is developed every time a pet owner takes the time to care for their pet through grooming, or playing pet games. During the grooming process you are constantly stroking your pet, brushing him, cleaning his ears and trimming long nails. If you were to pay close attention to his reaction, you can tell he is more at ease with the activity. This may or may not mean that he is aware of the grooming process and that he agrees to it, or it may just mean he is pleased you are spending the time with him. Try to go along with the moment. If you are about to use some kind of tools for the job, let your pet smell it first and become familiar with it. This way there won’t be any interruptions due to unpleasant surprises. If you will be using clippers that make noise, don’t turn them on close to your pet at first, and certainly not close to his ears. Cats and dogs have a very acute sense of hearing, and may get startled by what we may consider insignificant sounds. Turn on any motorized item such as blowers and clippers away from the animal for the first time, and let it run for a couple of minutes while you stroke and appease him. Then begin to slowly bring it closer and begin to work. In order to maintain a peaceful and supportive atmosphere, the grooming process should always start with a few gentle words and a few pet games. Remember that the success of your first grooming experience will determine the ease and success of others to come. A bad first impression of what grooming is will seal the experience in your pets mind and will remain on the lookout next time you approach him for such an ordeal, which he certainly won’t want to participate. On the other hand, a pleasant and soothing experience will put a positive signature on the experience, to the extent your pet might even look forward participating again! Accidents do happen, such as clipping the nails a bit too close to the cuticle and letting some blood come out. In this type of situation, stop what you’re doing and provide first aid immediately. Make sure your pet is alright and show lots of af fection as to make him understand that you did not mean to hurt him. After a while, everything should be back to normal, and you would have kept the confidence the animal has in you. If necessary, postpone the grooming activity and turn to a pet game of some sort in order to forget the situation. The grooming process is very important for your pet, but as you can see, there are mental issues to consider as well as the physical. If you are not confident in your abilities to make this the most pleasant experience as possible for your pet, you should take him to a professional groomer. Groomers are professionals in these situations and are most likely to do it in a more timely fashion than you. Interview your local groomers and take your pet to the same groomer time after time.

Toilet Cleaning Instructions
1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl. 2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom. 3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. You may need to stand on the lid. 4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this. 5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a power-wash and rinse. 6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door. 7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids. 8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off. 9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean. Sincerely, The Dog

Project H.O.P.E – Fostering Happiness and Growth in Every Child. Project H.O.P.E is a very special program operating in our community which provides group music therapy and recreation therapy to promote the development of communication and life skills. We provide these therapies to children 3-18 years of age with severe learning needs including communication, cognitive, self-help, socialemotional and /or behavioral difficulties. The children receive these therapies at school as studies show that children are most alert and able to effectively learn during the hours of 8am-4pm. Project H.O.P.E operates in partnership with the Golden Hills School Division by providing therapeutic interventions in selected Golden Hills Schools. GHSD provides services such as helping Project H.O.P.E with administrative functions and other managerial tasks. The project however, is not necessarily funded by the school division. 100% of Project H.O.P.E’s operational funds come from fund raising and donations! Money is raised through: - Local funding efforts. Such as the yearly gala and through casino proceeds. - Grants from organizations like the Wheatland Family and Community Support Services and the Alberta Wild Rose Foundation - The generous support of service groups such as the lions club - Donations from parents, community members and local businesses Project H.O.P.E will be hosting its annual Gala fund raiser on March 13 of this year at the Strathmore Travelodge. This Gala is our major fund raiser of the year. There will be live jazz music with the ‘Colin Haydu Trio’. A silent and live auction with auctioneer Grant Klaiber. Cocktails at 5pm and a wonderful supper at 6pm. Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased by contacting Westmount School @ 403-934-3401. I AM A GARLIC BULB I know, I know, not everyone likes garlic, but I am very tasty and aromatic. There is no other flavour so unique and pungent with a touch of sweetness as me. My name is Georgio Garlic. There are whole books written about me and I am a member of the Allium family - onions are my cousins. Although garlic, may not always bring good luck, protect against evil or ward off vampires, it is guaranteed to transform any meal into a bold, aromatic and healthy culinary experience. This GARLIC SAUCE is extremely versatile. You can use this GARLIC WHITE SAUCE for steak or burgers or for dipping at your next BBQ and it couldn’t be much easier. 6 cloves garlic, crushed 1 ½ C. water ½ C. broth ½ C. sugar ¼ C. soy sauce 3 Tbsp. cornstarch Salt and Pepper to taste Mix the cornstarch and sugar together. Add the broth, soy sauce and water to make gravy. Stir well, add the garlic. Heat on low until the mixture thickens. TOO EASY !!!! O.K who doesn’t like BAKED GARLIC CROUTONS? In your soup on your salad or just for munching. 2 garlic cloves, minced, ¼ C. butter, melted and 3 slices of bread Cut into half-inch cubes. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a large bowl, mix the garlic and melted butter. Add the cubes of bread and stir gently to coat. Place on a baking sheet in one layer – bake turning once until golden (takes about 15 minutes). and if you have any croutons left add them on top when you serve. (if you don’t use the French Bread) 10 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced 5 cups of beef broth 1 C. of dry sherry ¼ C. olive oil French Bread, sliced and toasted Grated Parmesan cheese Salt and Pepper Saute the garlic in the olive oil until golden. Heat the beef broth with sherry until boiling and add the garlic and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and simmer for about 30 minutes. Strain out the garlic and reheat. Sprinkle toasted French bread generously with Parmesan cheese, then place in a 425 degree oven for 3 – 4 minutes. Put the hot toast in the bottom of soup dishes then pour the soup over the top. – My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Because of its pungent odor, garlic is sometimes called the ‘stinking rose’. One of my most favorite foods in the world is GARLIC PRIME RIB ROAST – you are going to love this recipe. 1 (10 pound) prime rib roast 10 cloves garlic, minced 2 Tbsp. olive oil 2 Tsp. Salt 2 Tsp. Ground black pepper 2 Tsp. Dried thyme Place the roast in a roasting pan with the fatty side up. In a small bowl, mix together the garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper and thyme. Spread the mixture over the fatty layer of the roast, let the roast sit out until it is at room temperature, no longer than 1 hour. Place the roast in a preheated 450 degree oven for 20 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 325 degrees – continue to bake for 60 to 75 minutes. The internal temperature of the roast should be 145 degrees (for medium rare). Allow the roast to rest for 10 or 15 minutes before carving so the meat can retain its juices. The Newsy Neighbor

Consider another opinion: “The truth is, this pervasive and persistent anti-tanning campaign has not done you any favors. Daily sunscreen usage is unnatural when the real value of the product is preventing sunburn on days when sunburn is a possibility. You would not wear a life jacket or PFD everyday, everywhere; so appreciate it is unhealthy and unnecessary to use sunscreen year-round. The first visible signs of aging are generally more likely to be noticed first on the skin, as the skin is an external organ. One day, a person may wake up, look in the mirror, see wrinkles and lines and feel “old”. Please remember - there is nobody more critical of yourself than you! Most people probably don’t see every tiny line and crease that you do. Lack of vitality and a dull appearance are characteristics which may visibly show aging skin. Slow turnover of epidermal cells as well as micro-circulation deficiency, causes thickening of the skin. Dry patches on the skin are common because of this. Free radicals (the main cause of aging) thrive in this environment, due to the reduced quantity of oxygen reaching the dermal cells. Wrinkles result when the increased activity of free radicals cause deterioration, and eventually the collapse of the fibro-blast (collagen and elastine fiber network). Superficial lines can be caused by dehydration. Wrinkles are permanent depressions at the dermal level. A greater loss of collagen protein is indicated by horizontal wrinkles. Vertical wrinkles are the result of the lost resiliency of elastine fiber. Diminished production of hormones, especially estrogen and testosterone (accounts for skin’s firmness and resiliency) is a major cause of wrinkle formation. A combined effect of damaged connective tissue and increased mass loss (fat depletion and muscle volume reduction) causes sagging. Gravity exercises a greater negative influence on the progressive thinning of the skin’s support structure, at the epidermis and dermis level. With age, the malleability of blood vessels diminish, and blood pressure may become increasingly higher, which causes widening and narrowing of capillary walls that tear and blood will seep to the skin’s surface. This is known as broken capillaries. They are more visible due to the thinning of the skin especially on the cheeks and nose area. Dark spots characteristic for older people (known as brown spots), is the consequence of increased lack of co-ordination between the production of melanin, which is the brown pigment, and the speed of cell division. The cell’s ability to absorb the pigment in an even manner diminishes, and dark brown spots (improperly called liver spots) are formed. These spots can appear on the face, arms, hands and legs first, but other parts of the skin will eventually be affected as well. Brown spots are darker in color and smaller in size, in contrast to hyper-pigmentation that may occur at any age due to unprotected sun exposure. Regular use of foods containing Omega 3 (salmon, sardines, walnuts and seeds), and a diet rich in anti-oxidants (all berries, fresh fruit, raw vegetables, and vitamin supplements) are remedies for delaying skin aging. As always, sun protection is a must at any age no matter the weather conditions. Better skin and delaying premature aging can be the benefits from drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep. Exfoliation on a regular base will also help to delay the signs of aging. The aging process cannot be stopped, but it is possible to slow it down a certain degree without much effort. The best way to prevent aging skin is prevention and to take very good care of your skin to prevent unnecessary damage. You do not have to be old before you start protecting your skin. Use and follow a good skin care regimen every day which includes a gentle cleanser, a purifying toner and a rich moisturizer. Do not forget to add exfoliation at least once a week. Remember - beauty is not necessarily the monopoly of the young and a good attitude will help us through the inevitable process! How To Spa Safe ~ By Country Escape & Spa A trip to the spa should be a place to Escape, Refresh and Relax. However, it is very important to make sure that your spa treatments are not only relaxing and fun, but also SAFE. The steps to follow to ensure your safety are similar to those of selecting a Dentist or Doctor. Staff should be trained and educated. They should be certified or registered in your province. They should also be trained in infection control. Infection control is: SANITIZATION – Removing debris (dirt). DISINFECTION – Destroying bacteria and wide spectrum of viruses, effective against HIV, Hepatitis and Tuberculosis. STERILIZATION – Kills all small organisms and bacterial spores. Cleanliness – When you first walk into a spa everything from the receptionist’s desk, to the massage table should appear spotless. Ask to take a tour of the spa. A clean appearance doesn’t necessarily guarantee a safe spa trip but it’s an essential starting point. See if the equipment, files, tools etc. are open in front of you in sterile bags, ensuring they have been processed in an Autoclave (heat sterilization) and are sterile. Staff should be washing their hands and using hand sanitizer during and in-between clients. Hand sanitizer should be visible at each station to prevent infection and spread of bacteria. Ask (or watch the staff) how the foot baths are maintained and how often they are cleaned. They should be disinfected. Disinfectant needs to be ran in whirlpool foot bath for 10 min. Staff should be educated in recognizing foot infections, fungus, warts, etc. And use their discretion on whether they will treat you or refer you to a doctor. Look for “double-dipping” (i.e., make sure wax pots are clean and a new stick should be used each time more wax is taken out of the pot to ensure they are not using them on the next client). Good spas will ask your medical history. This is to ensure anyone working on you will be aware of allergies, medications or supplements you’re taking as well as conditions or surgery you have had (i.e., someone with high blood pressure has to be careful with certain wraps). Ask someone you trust, a friend or family member who has been to the spa what their experience was like. Make sure your spa is not cutting corners. Beware of “No-frills Spas” that charge rock bottom prices. If they are moving clients out as quickly as possible they may be cutting corners due to uneducated staff and lack of sanitization, disinfection and sterilization. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

sit a lot and I eat. My health is good at this point, but I know, as a health consultant, this cannot go on. I weigh more now than I have in any point of my life. The reason I am telling you this, is because that if you are overweight, you too, have some reason why you are heavy. Stress of any kind, can make you turn to food. The time is now to lose some weight. Don’t make yourself an unreasonable goal, be practicable. 10 lbs. can be one dress size less than you are now, for the average woman. So think of sizes and use that as your goal, as to what size pants you want to wear. (For goodness sakes, don’t choose a size 6, 4 or 2) .... be practical! Start off by losing 10 lbs, then 20 if you so choose. Take your weight off in baby steps. If you go on a full diet, you can lose lots of weight, but, guaranteed, you will put it on again, and maybe even more than when you started. Do you want to lose, then gain, then lose, then gain, all the rest of your life? NO, don’t do that! That is not good for your health. Here are a few suggestions for you to get started. This is what I am going to do. 1. Cut out all processed food. No more “store bought” cookies, muffins, cakes, and sugary foods. 2. I will watch my portions. I am going to buy one medium sized dish. The ones I have now, are either large dinner plates, or one too small, that a nice supper cannot fit on. 3. I can’t go for long walks. You too, may not have the time, or may have a disability similar to mine. I can still movebusines my arms, wiggle my bum, and turn my waist from side to side. I like music, and I know I won’t do this without music. If it seems like fun, I may do it. 4. I will drink healthy teas with no caffeine, as I have a hard time drinking 8 glasses of water a day. By varying my flavours of tea, I can drink it hot or cold, with or without lemon, because I know, it is healthy for me. 5. I will not snack while watching T.V., I will enjoy my tea instead. Different Types Of Rugs To Accentuate Your Home Where you presently live, do you have a porch? If so, it is good idea to have a rug that leads from your exterior to your interior. Then any visitors should choose to get rid of any traces of dirt from the soles of their footwear before stepping in to your abode. Be sure to make a point of having one on your outside patio as well, because it is every bit as important. You do not want people inadvertently get ting your floor dirty! Refinishing Hardwood Floor The Easy Way Refinishing hardwood floors takes time, effort, patience, and the right tools and techniques, but if you want to have really good hardwood floor finishes, then you’ve got to give all what this task requires. If your floor is starting to look dull and worn, then you may need to refinish it to get that shinier look again. This can be a messy project but it is well worth your time, effort, and investment. Especially for exotic hardwood floors, the result may not be what you are expecting if you refinish it without sanding. Thus, before any other steps, you need to sand the floor first. Remove all furniture and rugs from the room before sanding. Check if there are any nails on the floor. If there are, then pound those nails down the surface and pull all tracks and carpet staples because these could rip the sand paper and ruin the sheet. You could either buy or rent a floor sander from the local equipment shop. Consider newer orbital sanders for floor refinishing but make sure that the equipment is easy to control. You should also get different grits of sand paper. It is better if you can have 36, 60, 80, and 100 grits. Clip the heaviest grit into the sander and run the equipment over the floor following the wood grain’s direction. Pull or push the sander in even and straight strokes. Do not sand across the wood grain. Keep the machine moving while it is turned on because if you gouge even for a little time, you may need to use the sander again with longer strokes to even out the gouged part. Take off the heaviest grit of sand paper from the sander when you’ve completely sanded the whole floor. Clip a lighter grit of sand paper and start sanding lines and scratches in the floor as many times as possible to remove those flaws. Do this until all the grits of sand paper have been used. continued on page 54.. Page 52

Refinishing Hardwood Floor The Easy Way Continued.. When you see that the old finish is completely sanded, you may now proceed to staining the floor. Make sure that the floor is already free from all sawdust. Before staining, do not forget to open the windows of the room you are working in for proper ventilation. Use a rag to apply some stain to the floor’s corner to check if that is really the stain color that you want. Wait for the stain to dry up. If it is really the color that you want, then you may continue. Apply the first stain coating to the rest of the flooring. You can use a brush for darker and heavier coats but if you want lighter coats, you can just use a rag. Apply the stain with even and long strokes, going with the wood grain. Wait until the first coating dries up. If needed, apply a second coating or just touch up those light spots. Make sure the floor is already dry before applying the finish. After staining the floor, it’s time to apply the finish. Stir the polyurethane finish and shake the mixture until air bubbles are created. Use a roller or a brush to apply the polyurethane, using even and smooth strokes with the wood grain to avoid marks. Allow the wood flooring finish to dry up. It may take 3 hours or more depending on the wood floor finish brand you used. Add the second coating and wait until it completely dries up and your task of refinishing hardwood floor is complete! Refinishing hardwood floor can really be hard but there are a lot of tips to make the task easier. Just do a search for them on the Internet, and before you know it you will be getting something shiny and beautiful down on the floor! Page 54

Housing performance expected to accelerate in 2010, as economic stability returns to Canadian markets, says RE/MAX. Fifteen markets to set new records for average price in 2009. The RE/MAX Housing Market Outlook for 2010 examined residential real estate trends in 23 markets. The report found that sales are forecast to recover in almost all major centers by year-end 2009. Average price should post new records in 65 per cent of markets surveyed this year. Approximately 465,000 homes are expected to change hands nationally in 2009, a seven per cent increase over one year ago. Canadian housing values are forecast to close the year at $318,000, up five per cent from $303,594 in 2008. By year-end 2010, the number of homes sold is predicted to climb another two per cent to 475,000 units. The average price of a home is also expected to experience an uptick, rising two per cent to $325,000 – the highest level in Canadian history. The major frontrunners in terms of unit sales appreciation in 2010, are all located in Western Canada, including Calgary with an expected increase of eight per cent. A number of factors will help prop up activity going forward, including improved economic conditions, continued low interest rates, rising consumer confidence and solid capital spending which will buoy employment. For a couple years I’ve been blaming it on lack of sleep, not enough sunshine, too much pressure from my job, ear wax build-up, poor blood circulation or anything else I could think of. Now I’ve found out the real reason I’m tired – because I’m overworked. Here’s why: The population of Canada is 30 million. 11 million are retired; that leaves 19 million to do the work. There are 5.5 million in school, which leaves 13.5 million to do the work. Of this there are 3 million employed by the federal government, leaving 10.5 million to do the work. 1 million are in the armed forces, preoccupied with killing Terrorists, which leaves 9.5 million to do the work. Take from that total the 7 million people who work for Provincial and city Governments, and that leaves 2.5 million to do the work. At any given time, there are 476,000 people in hospitals, leaving 2,024,000 to do the work. Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons and 812,000 on Employment Insurance and Welfare. 2010 TORCH RELAY IN CHESTERMERE
On January 19th, 2010 the Town of Chestermere was lucky enough to be a part of the longest relay in history. The torch was lit on October 22nd in Greece and after 82 days, it arrived here in Chestermere. The 106 days of the torch relay are to inspire peace, goodwill and friendship, and to inspire Canadians to be a part of the 2010 Olympic games in Vancouver. Our very own Marla Forth was one of the 12,000 very special torchbearers and she did a very fine job. Marla, you looked great and made everyone in Chestermere very proud. Hundreds of people came out to John Peake Park and enjoyed all the entertainment and celebration.
