From the Publishers June… just the start of summer, the tulips are blooming and we are enjoying the beginning of the long sunny days and pleasant evening hours sitting on our decks. June slips by quickly so take advantage of every single warm day – you never know what July and August will bring! Once again, we have exciting news of change at The Newsy Neighbour! We always have creative and interesting people contacting us with proposals and ideas and May was a particularly busy month for this. Well, the first new project we have untaken is The Newsy Neighbour mobile marketing – now considered the 7th mass media and the newest marketing trend; the other 6 being Print, Recordings, Cinema, Radio, Television and Internet. They are called mass media because they reach out and touch the greater masses. It is experiencing tremendous growth globally. Japan was one of the first countries to embrace mobile marketing; with Europe and others following and now growing like wildfire in Canada. Mobile Marketing is business communications with consumers on their mobile phone with their explicit permission - providing relevant value and perks. And, we now have a mobile friendly website and we have 3 AWESOME text campaigns running. Read on in this issue to learn more. AND, the future will bring a Newsy Neighbour APP for your iPods and iPads! You will be able to read us wherever you are - on your phone! WOW, technology is truly amazing! AND, The Newsy Neighbour will now be delivered in Strathmore and Langdon with The Strathmore Standard! They approached us with this nifty nylon bag idea – you hang it on your door or fence and the newspaper and the magazine will be placed inside! We love this great new delivery system! You just walk out your door and grab The Newsy Neighbour – delivered right to your home. How easy is that?! AND, make sure you check out all the new stuff in our “Unique Boutique.” All you home creators of unique items should really take advantage of this great advertising opportunity – let people know what you have to offer. We are always working hard to stand behind our motto “helping towns and people connect.” The Unique Boutique is just one more way to make this happen. Enjoy the June issue of the magazine! This month has a lot of really good reading and new advertisers for you to support – shop local! Don’t forget – support your communities and their businesses. Happy June! Dear Editor, We would like to take this opportunity to respond to some questions we have had as to why the public was not allowed to bring their pets into the Strathmore Pet Expo. This was really not our decision to make. There are many regulations in place to protect the public and the animals in these situations. We were very fortunate that the Town of Strathmore and the wonderful folks at the Civic Center worked with us to even allow the vendors to bring their animals in. The vendors had a legal waiver which they had to sign as they were responsible for their pets and ensuring their pets were current on all vaccinations, medical checks, etc. Our veterinarian was consulted over any concerns before approval was granted. Health Services was very accommodating in educating us on what we could and could not do and I ensure you all the guidelines given to us were followed. We were fortunate to have Teresa Fuchs, from animal control on hand should we have any situations arise. We know that most pet owners are responsible and are in control of their pets. However, in a different environment with other animals and large crowds of people they could become frightened or stressed. For their protection and the protection of everyone it is necessary to maintain a level of control. We are very thankful that to the Town of Strathmore for allowing us to host and showcase this event. We have done a lot of research in the past few months and were told by other venues and municipalities that they could never allow such an event to be held as various factors including allergies and liability issues forbid them from allowing animals into their facilities under any circumstances. The Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton & Vancouver Pet Expo’s also do not allow the public to bring their pets. Thank you again to everyone for your understanding and most of all for your support. See you next year! Melissa Crispin-Piche and Melissa David www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Are you ready for some football?

As we head into a brand new CFL season, there are questions, lots of questions surrounding the 2011 Calgary Stampeders! Can a team lose the best offensive lineman in the league, two all star corners, a difference making defensive lineman, a couple of team leaders and still be considered a serious threat to win the Western Conference? As much as it pains me to admit it, the answer is no! In my humble opinion, the Stamps will take a small step back this season. As the old saying goes “short term pain for long term gain.” Don’t get me wrong. The Stamps will still be a playoff team but I don’t envision a repeat of last year’s 13 wins and the best record in the regular season. Here are the top five questions to be answered over the next month at McMahon Stadium as training camp and the pre season gets underway. 1) Can the Stamps win with a young and inexperienced offensive line? In 2008, the Stamps won the Grey Cup with two rookies on the offensive line. Jessie Newman is long gone to Vancouver and Dimitri Tsoumpas is now the longest serving veteran on the line. The Stamps have lots of potential with prized Canadian rookies John Bender and J’Michael Deane but this is unproven potential and both rookies admit they have some work to do on their pass protection. The Stamps employed two import tackles on the line last season and you have to wonder if that ratio will change in 2011. Edwin Harrison and Stanley Byrant will battle it out for the key left tackle position vacated by Ben Archibald’s departure to BC. Three new faces to watch are Junius Coston, Tony Washington and Gerald Cadagan. Cadogan is a former Penn State star who has had practice roster stints in the NFL with the Colts, Bengals and Chargers. “Juice” Coston has played in the NFL with the Packers; he also spent time with the Lions and the Raiders. Jock’s prediction: “Deane has a great camp and starts when the season opens.” 2) Will the secondary be exploited due to the loss of Dwight Anderson and Brandon Browner? There are some who will suggest the Stamps are better off without their two all star corners. I am not in that camp! Sure they took the odd bad penalty and D.A. yapped a little too much but to suggest the Stamps are better off without them? That’s a crock! Geoff Tisdale was a nice free agent signing out of Hamilton and likely will take Anderson’s spot. Daren Stone, a former NFL standout with the Atlanta Falcons, Demetrice Morley and Greg Fassitt are the newcomers to watch. Fassit has played for a few NFL teams and was acquired as part of the trade that brought Romby Byrant and Arjei Franklin from Winnipeg. Don’t forget veteran safety Wes Lysack is also gone so there will be three new starters in the defensive backfield. Jock’s prediction: “Stone stands out but Browner is back with the Stamps in September.” 3) The Linebackers are good but what about that defensive line? It didn’t get a lot of press in the off season but I really believe the Stamps are going to miss defensive tackle Tom Johnson. Johnson was a free agent signing by the New Orleans Saints. Big DeVone Claybrooks is on the hot seat while Canadian talent Miguel Robede was shipped to the Argos and Mike Labinjo was cut loose. The Stamps defensive unit was one of the best in the league last season and new faces are going to have to step up to make fans forget about the loss of Johnson. The Stamps have recruited hard over the winter. New faces to watch include Torrey Davis, Page 14

The Newsy Neighbour

Maxwell Onyegbule, Kevin Dixon, Lindsey Witten and Andre Coleman. Only Coleman has CFL experience who made his debut with Edmonton last summer. The Stamps have also loaded up with non imports to compete for backup roles and special teams. Junior Turner, Akwasi Antwi, Ian Shaw and Osie Ukwuoma are all in this category. Ukwuoma is an interesting story as he took last year off to complete his degree at Queens. Jock’s prediction: “There will be some growing pains early in the season but Davis and Coleman will help Chris Jones and the defensive coaches forget about Johnson.” 4) Who will stand out as the top Canadian receiver? It’s quite obvious that this was a position the Stamps needed to upgrade. Ryan Thelwell is retired and Jabari Auther has not lived up to his potential. The Stamps traded up in the draft to acquire Anthony Parker of the U of C Dinos and he will be in a great battle with 22 year old Johnny Forzani. Forzani had an injury plagued rookie season but he does have a slight advantage with the playbook. Both players have potential but both are very raw. American Landon Talley is also going to be on the hot seat at camp as the Stamps have recruited heavily. Dudley Guice, Tyree Burks and Marko Mitchell all come in with great resumes but will be in tough to challenge the big three of Lewis, Rambo and Byrant. Jock’s Prediction: “Parker has a great camp and wins a starting job.” 5) New leadership must emerge? Lazeo, Thelwell, Comisky, Lysack, Browner, Anderson are all gone! This is a great intangible that can’t be overlooked. Nik Lewis stepped up to the plate last season. Who is going to answer the bell this year? Jock’s prediction: “Charleston Hughes, Juwan Simpson and Corey Mace step up their game.” There are a couple of minor battles that will also be worth watching this month. Will rookie Canadian Brad Sinopoli out gun Steve Gachette for the third string quarterback spot? Sinopoli won the Hec Creighton trophy last year while Gachette was a nominee for the Harlon Hill Trophy which is the Division II version of the Heisman. The Stamps also have high hopes for running back LaMarcus Coker. A former sprinter, Coker was a star at Tennessee as a freshman. He will battle Rafael Little for the right to back up Joffrey Reynolds. New faces on the coaching staff and new faces on the field should make for a very interesting month at McMahon stadium. The Stamps first pre season test is on June 15th vs. the BC Lions. The regular season kicks off on July 1st against the Argos. I am looking forward to another great season with Mark Stephen, Greg Peterson and Dave Rowe on the home of the Stamps, QR 77. I hope you listen in?

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY

For mother’s Day in the May Issue, we did a whole special breakfast for MOM. So, for Father’s Day, which is June 19th – DON’T FORGET! – we are doing a whole special Dinner for DAD, as promised.

First: Begin with a very special and refreshing punch drink for dear ol’ dad. All you need is 2 bottles of white grape juice, 1 bottle of Club Soda and 2 bottles of 7-Up (56oz). Mix all of the ingredients together, serve well chilled, and it tastes just like champagne! Dad will feel so special! Then: Something for Dad to munch on while he is waiting for his special dinner! Make some super yummy and healthy carrot chips. Why munch on boring carrot sticks when you can turn raw carrots into crispy, delicate chips instead? A vegetable peeler is the only tool you’ll need to make these sweet, paper-thin crisps that are perfect for healthy snacking. The carrot slices shrink considerably when baked; so buy the thickest carrots you can find. Use a Y-shaped vegetable peeler to shave the carrots into thin, even slices. These types of peelers have a thin, flexible blade that takes off less flesh, and they easily manoeuvre around odd-shaped vegetables. They’re also great for turning vegetables, cheese, or chocolate into thin shavings. They can be found in most kitchen stores. You need - 2 large carrots (at least 1 inch in diameter), peeled; 1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil, 1/4 plus 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Heat the oven to 350°F and arrange the racks to divide the oven into thirds. Holding the stem end, shave the carrots lengthwise into thin strips using a Y-shaped vegetable peeler. Place the carrot strips in a medium bowl, add the oil, salt, and pepper to taste and toss with your hands until thoroughly coated. Place the strips in a single layer on 2 baking sheets (the strips can be touching, but should not overlap). Bake for 6 minutes, and then rotate the pans between the racks. Bake until the edges of the chips are just starting to turn golden brown, about 6 to 8 minutes more. Place the baking sheets on wire racks and let cool – serve with your favourite dip. Next: Surprise Dinner Packets! Seal meat and vegetables in a sheet of heavy-duty foil. Easy to make and no clean up! Yahoo! The best part! The flavours mingle and marinate and you can make them in the morning and refrigerate until it is time to cook them.

CHEDDAR BURGER VEGGIE PACKETS 1 ½ Cups Baby Carrots – 1 Lb. Extra-lean beef – 1 Cup shredded Cheddar cheese - 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce - 1/4 cup minced onion - 1/2 tsp. seasoned salt - 1/8 tsp. pepper - 2 medium potatoes, thinly sliced - 2 yellow summer squash, sliced - 1 pint cherry tomatoes - 1 green bell pepper, - chopped - 1/4 tsp. seasoned salt - 1/8 tsp. pepper - 1/4 cup steak sauce - Prepare and heat grill. Spray non-stick cooking spray on half of one side of four 18x12" sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil. Bring a small pot of water to a boil, and cook carrots for 3 minutes. Mix beef, cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, minced onion, steak sauce, 1/2 tsp. seasoned salt and 1/8 tsp. pepper in medium bowl. Form into 4 patties, each about 1" thick. Place potatoes on prepared side of foil sheets. Top with beef patty, drained carrots, summer squash slices, tomatoes, and green bell pepper. Sprinkle with 1/4 tsp. seasoned salt and 1/8 tsp. pepper and top each with a tablespoon of steak sauce. Fold foil over food so edges meet and fold to seal, making a 1/2" fold; fold again. Make sure to allow space on sides for expansion; don't fold the foil tightly around the food. Grill packets 6" from medium heat for about 20-25 minutes, rearranging and turning often, or until potatoes are tender and beef is thoroughly cooked. You can also bake the packets in a preheated 450°F oven for 20-30 minutes. The Last and Most Important Part: Your special Father’s Day present of homemade chocolate cake. This is positively THE BEST never fail chocolate cake recipe, ever! What you'll need: 2 Mixing bowls - 1 small, 1 medium Electric mixer or whisk, cake pan (rounds, oblong, square) greased & dusted with flour, 3 C. all-purpose flour, 2 C. granulated sugar, 2 Tsp. baking soda, 2 Tsp. vinegar, 1/2 Tsp. salt, 1/3 C. light vegetable oil, 2 C. cold water, 6 Tbsp. cocoa, 2 Tsp. vanilla, 1/2 Tsp. ground cloves (optional) Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease & flour your baking pan. This recipe fills two 9" layer cake pans or one 9x13" oblong pan, or approximately 2 dozen cupcakes. Cut recipe in half to make an 8-9" square pan for snack cake. Sift dry ingredients into a deep mixing bowl (flour, sugar, soda, salt, cocoa & cloves). Mix with a fork or wire whisk. In a separate small bowl combine liquid ingredients (vinegar, oil, cold water, & vanilla). Slowly blend the liquid into the dry ingredients using a hand mixer or wire whisk. When well blended, beat vigorously for 2 minutes with your whisk or with portable mixer on medium speed.

Dad’s carry a lot of responsibility in their lives and sometimes forget to look after themselves. Here are a few ideas just to make you even better than you already are and something to do just for you. Memorize something every day. Not only will this leave your brain sharp and your memory functioning, you will also have a huge library of quotes to bust out at any moment. Poetry, sayings and philosophies are your best options. Smile often. Whenever you get a grin on your face, your brain is releasing serotonin, the happy hormone. Smiling is the natural way to force yourself to be happy. Many people even smile for five minutes straight in the morning to get themselves in a great mood for the day. It is a very powerful tool that is utilized less and less as we grow older and need happiness more than ever. Just remember that while happiness leads to smiles, smiles also lead to happiness. Start your day off right. Wake up and set aside an hour for personal development activities (meditation, selfintrospection, observing nature, etc.). Do the things that make you feel blissful, optimistic and empowered so that you can set a positive tone for your day. I guarantee that once you start doing this, your days will be more enjoyable and fulfilling. Today is going to be the best day of your life!

Stressed , Wedding Plans; Self-Massage Can Help!

Do you what to look and feel wonderful for your perfect day? That includes both the bride and groom! You are running around getting the final touches ready for the big day, and every detail is very important - but the most important detail should be you! Both the bride and groom need to look after themselves in order for it to be the perfect day. Here are some tips to reduce stress in the days ahead before your wedding day. Being organized and having a plan is essential. Second, both the bride and groom should try to have several massages with a Massage Practitioner. They can also help themselves with self-massage, thus relaxing and increase the closeness of their relationship. Self-Massage can be fun, easy and an inexpensive way to help each other relax and get to know one another on a whole new level. Giving one another a massage increases endorphins that will help the body stay in a relaxed state while you are planning and organizing for your big day. All it would take is a simple massage on the feet, shoulders and neck. When one’s body is totally relaxed, even under pleasure, it can help promote a healthy immune system, thus making you and your partner look and feel your best. So why not give each other a massage to help relax for The Big Day?! By Cynthia Barnesky

Being A Wedding MC - Top Tips For Introducing The Speakers A wedding mc is the Master of Ceremonies at the wedding reception. Think of him, or her, as the puppeteer who pulls the strings, the one who makes things happen. The main duty of the wedding emcee is ensuring the wedding reception flows. As the wedding mc you will be responsible for introducing the speakers, leading the applause for each speaker and providing the transition to the next speaker. And throughout the wedding reception you will, as wedding mc, provide the link from one event to the next. To be a success as a wedding mc, here are some top tips to remember when introducing speakers. Tip #1: a good introduction is always brief; Tip #2: make sure you can correctly pronounce the name of each speaker you have to introduce; Tip #3: know a little about each speaker; Tip #4: never upstage a speaker; and Tip #5: remember you are not a stand-up comic. Never tell risque jokes, or mother-in-law jokes or tales about a previous relationship the bride or groom may have had. It’s always advisable to ask the bride and groom what type of humour they want. Generally, a speaker at an event is never sure of the reaction they’ll get from their audience. Will it be friendly or hostile? As a wedding mc you have one big advantage. The bridal party and all the guest are all on your side. They are friendly and want, just like you, the wedding reception to be a great party enjoyed by everyone. Prepare properly for your role as a wedding mc and you’ll be fine. And remember, this is a live event and things can and do go wrong. So be prepared for the unexpected to happen too. Planning a Destination or a Destination Theme Wedding

Planning a destination wedding can be a daunting prospect before you start, but if you have a theme or overall idea in mind, are flexible, and enlist the help of the right professionals you can soon realize the wedding of your dreams. There are different things that motivate couples to choose a destination wedding over a traditional wedding at home. It may sound like getting married in a foreign country is going to be more expensive but when you take into account that your guest list is likely to be 30 instead of 300 the cost is not too much different. For some they want to return to a place that has history for them but others (like myself) can use a destination wedding as a way to have the more intimate wedding they desire without the pressure from family to invite every cousin, aunt and family friend you’ve ever met (even though you haven’t seen them for years!). Furthermore, you will notice that only those family members who really wish to share your day with you will attend, due to the personal cost commitment to the guests. It’s quite easy to get carried away when trying to choose a theme so it’s best for the two of you to brainstorm together to ensure that the celebration reflects both of you. Things you can draw on are favourite pastimes, family history, occupations, music tastes, common culture, shared interests, and anything else that makes the two of you, as a couple, unique. The internet is an invaluable tool to gain inspiration. Make a paper file or one on your computer where you save images and ideas relating to your ceremony, reception, favours, food, attendant’s clothing etc. Go through it together and discard anything that doesn’t fit with the theme. Destinations such as the Dominican, Las Vegas, Mexico and Jamaica all offer inspiration for theme weddings that can leave you and your guests with lasting memories. Don’t feel like you have to go with common themes either just because it’s easier to find décor and invitations to match it. The right team can help you bring together whatever is needed to really personalize your day. Choose a destination that either suits your theme or is

PASSION PARTIES by RONNA Book your Bachelorette or Girls Night In Party SOON!

somewhere that you want to experience with your closest family and friends. Doing research, before putting down a deposit on anything, is crucial. Compare ceremony sites, reception venues, florists, bakers etc. online. There are lots of wedding websites that will allow you to connect with other couples that have used the same vendors you will need and they can give you advice on who in the area worked hard for them and who they suggest to pass on. You’ll also need to make sure that the time of year you want to get married is suitable for the destination you have chosen. You don’t want a beach wedding with a hurricane in the background! Try not to rely solely on wedding advice sites and company websites though. It is best to speak with the professionals you will be working with. Talking with the actual people you will be working with before booking allows you to determine if you will be able to work with them in the months leading up to your wedding. If they haven’t given you one, request a timeline so that you know when to have deposits, paperwork etc. into them by to avoid any disappointment. Choosing an event coordinator to help you with planning from home will help ease some of the stress but will still allow you to keep on top of everything. Even if you are a very talented linguist the person you are speaking with may be developing a very different picture in their head when you are describing the mind blowing centrepieces you saw on that wedding show you were watching the night before. The planning you did when choosing your theme and the pictures you saved that give a visual of what it should look like will really come in handy when the only way to communicate visually with your professionals is via email. Keep everything in one place and keep it organized. A box will help keep everything together and an accordion file works great for contracts, pictures and any other paperwork you receive while planning.

How to plan a cheap wedding

There’s no doubt about it, weddings can be expensive. The average cost of a wedding today is $20,000 - $25,000, and weddings are estimated to be a $25.3 billion industry. But don’t worry if your budget cannot stretch for the most expensive custom-made gown, elegant invitation cards, or the top photographer, it doesn’t mean that your wedding will be any less unique or special than anyone else’s. You just need a bit of guidance and a few tips to help you achieve the dream of your big day. Here are a few suggestions with tips on how to save on some of the more expensive aspects of a wedding. Wedding Gowns ~ Do you really need a hand-made wedding dress with beads and diamantes? This is where the big cost is and there are several options in cutting the cost. Why not opt for a second-hand wedding dress? It’s probably only been worn once anyway and you can get a once expensive dress for half the price. Consider buying an evening gown/cocktail dress from a department store or look into renting your wedding dress for the day. The Reception ~ This is where the cost of a wedding can get out of hand. The wedding reception is normally the biggest expense, but one of the easiest to cut down on costs. Statistics show that an average of 189 guests attend a wedding; this is a lot. Try to keep your guest list to a minimum; do you really need to invite family members who you have never seen for years? Instead of a three-course meal why not opt for a hot and cold buffet (even cater for yourself)? Instead of holding the reception in an expensive hotel suite or wedding reception, why not consider having it at someone’s home or a club, or even book a restaurant? Keep an open bar to a minimal and only serve beer, wine and soft drinks. Invitations / Stationery ~ If you’re on a budget and looking for cheaper wedding stationery items, then you might like to consider print-athome stationery. There are many online stationer’s that will offer this service free of charge. You pay for the paper and envelopes, then use their software to print directly from your own PC. With sophisticated customizing tools you’ll be able to enter your own text and preview it before you print so as not to make any mistakes. Alternatively, you can buy software and do-it-yourself from your PC. Miscellaneous ~ Flowers can be another great expense, but also an unnecessary one. Why not buy wholesale flowers, or pick flowers from your garden (or a friends or relatives). Buy plain gold or white gold wedding bands as these are the cheapest. Get a friend to make your wedding cake for you and opt for a smaller tier cake and it doesn’t have to be a fruit cake - try a sponge, chocolate or carrot cake! Make your favours and center-pieces yourself. Accessories for these can be found at little outlet stores or online. Lastly, instead of a limousine why not rent a car or borrow a luxury car from a friend or relative? Summary ~ Weddings are expensive if you want them to be. But if you want to keep money aside for a deposit on a house or a honeymoon to remember, then there are many cost cutting ideas. All you need is a little imagination, and some help from friends and family and you too can have a luxury wedding with all the trimmings.

12 Creative Photography Ideas by John Huegel

Here are 12 ideas to get your creative juices flowing and increase your skills and value as a photographer. TIP 1 - Time Lapse photos. I showed my niece how to do this with clay figures and stitch the resulting frames together into a video file, and she was busy for days. If you control the exposure consistently to keep the images consistent with one another, you can do some really fun stop-motion animation. Or, you can set up your camera to capture other slow motion effects such as flowers opening and seedlings growing. TIP 2 - Night Lights. Things look very different at night. Shooting city scenes with available light creates some interesting images. And shooting outdoor images under moonlight or with “light painting”, where you open up the camera shutter for an extended exposure, and “paint” your targets with coloured or plain light, can create some truly bizarre images. TIP 3 - Astrophotography. Hook that SLR up to a telescope, and you are ready to peer into the depths of space and time. You’ll need some adapters, and ability to compensate for the earth’s rotation for really long shots. Start with the moon and move on from there. TIP 4 - Macro photography. From flowers to coins to stamps, you can polish your skills at close-up photography and capture some really detailed images. Often a macro lens or close-up attachment will help. See my tips on Flower Photography to get more information. TIP 5 - Micro photography. If you can interface that camera with a microscope, you can get some really crazy images. Or, stack up a bunch of close-up magnification and try your hand at turning salt crystals into surreal imagery. TIP 6 - Insurance Photos. OK, maybe a bit boring, but you and your friends and relatives will thank you. Take a couple hours and touch and photograph everything of value, with a full shot or two if each item of value, accompanied by a shot of the identifying marks manufacturer model or serial number. Then burn a CD or DVD and store it off site. If you have a fire or other loss, this could save the owner thousands of dollars. TIP 7 - Family Recipe book. Anytime those family favourites are prepared, copy down the recipe and take some photos of the food. You can produce a printed or electronic cookbook of family favourites that everyone will love. TIP 8 - Stock Photography. This is a very busy market niche, but the cost of entry is low. Specialize in things you love, and you may be able to generate some income from your stock images. Search for stock photography sites, and make sure you understand your rights before you post images. TIP 9 - Special Effects. Maybe you want to specialize in high-speed images of athletes, or surrealistic collages. Try your hand at using your editing skills to put someone in a soda bottle or floating on a candy lifesaver. Often more artistic than photographic, it will test your composition, lighting and editing skills to come up with believable artificial realities. TIP 10 - Still Life. Ahh, the bowl of fruit. Sometimes a simple object or collection, properly lit, shot and edited, is a thing of beauty. It’s a great way to study light. Start with an egg on a light background, a lamp and a window and see how you can learn about lighting and composition. TIP 11 - Computer Control. Many cameras have a USB interface and remote control software. You can actually control the camera from the computer. See if you can get it to work to your liking, and maybe even program some time lapse or exposure bracketing experiments. TIP 12 - Be Like Andy. Take some images of everyday items and try to create those neat coloured backgrounds like Andy Warhol used to make. Create a 4-up print of the same image and change the colours of each quadrant to make an interesting square print. Have fun with these ideas, and let me know when you become famous! Page 22

Tips to photograph an intimate wedding

Tread Lightly ~ Don’t impose your personality on the day everything even your opinions should always be in deference to the bride and groom. Expectations ~ Find out from the bride and groom what is expected of you and if necessary get them to tear out pages from magazines showing you the pictures that they like. Preparation ~ This is a once in a lifetime event and can’t be repeated so challenge yourself with your photography PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! Back Up ~ Yes literally! Please take a spare camera with you! Should yours fail then you need have one waiting in the wings! Familiarize ~ Yourself with the inner circle you should have the advantage here but if you don’t find out who the chief bridesmaid and best man are, try and be on first name terms with both should you need anything you need to be able to ask them. Timings ~ What time is the bride getting ready would she like some prep shots, how long does it take to get to the venue, you need to allow yourself plenty of time, what time is the groom getting ready and do you need to take photographs of that, etc.

Purified Wastewater Safely Returned to the Environment

We Design Septic Fields Here are a few advantages with our system over septic and other alternate type systems: • Surpasses European CE Standards; typical testing shows 97% BOD (total solids) removal; 87% phosphorus removal; 69% nitrogen removal. Resulting discharge was pH 7 (many field operations regularly exceed these numbers). • Treated water can be used in agriculture, irrigation, industrial processes, groundwater replenishment, or based on local regulations reused (grey water for watering plants or recycled for flushing toilets). • Nutrient retrieval rich phosphorous and nitrogen is returned for cultivation, thereby reducing the need for high cost mineral phosphorous for fertilization. • Units can be upgraded to remove pharmaceuticals, bacteria and even household grease. • Lower capital, operating, and maintenance costs versus membrane based reverse osmosis and desalinization plants. • Lower footprint requirements are particularly critical for installation in densely populated housing communities (new installation and/or retrofits and/or when more units are required to justify development). • Odourless and nearly noiseless, making it ideal for locating near or in the middle of a residential complex. • Low energy consumption – solar energy where desired/required. There is no by-pass flow of untreated wastewater. • There is minimal maintenance, and any required can be done above ground. • All units come with 2 years maintenance included. During this time the unit will be inspected every 6 months to ensure proper operation. • A warning system alerts the customer if anything needs attention. • Systems are available for single unit, multiple unit, and for entire communities. • Over 2500 household size units and over 500 large units have been installed worldwide.

ATTENTION ALL GROWN-UPS.

Your “inner child” has long been waiting for a chance to usurp control of your body and force it to perform certain actions. The time is now at hand. Read and follow the instructions below. Do this now. Pulsing Bloodbags - Shake your hand really hard, for a fairly long time, until your fingertips feel like they’re turning into rubber. Stop for a moment. Now do it again. It takes less time the second time for “rubberization” to commence, eh? Gleeking/Gleeting - Yawn. (No, REALLY yawn), then immediately curl your tongue backwards and force it against the roof of your mouth. The saliva glands under your tongue will squirt like a squirt gun! You can only squirt once or twice before another yawn is required. Also works while eating (or sucking on hard candy.) Practice this in front of a mirror until you can slightly part your lips and silently hit a target with deadly accuracy. Hey! Is it raining in here? Waskilly Wabbit - Say “aah-eeee-ahh-eee” with a deep voice, but relax your face and shake your head back and forth hard and fast so that your cheeks flap. Sounds like Elmer Fudd when he’s trying to shake off the dizzyness that comes from being hit on the head. Try this next time you get flattened by a falling anvil, see if it helps. A Feynman trick - Before you eat that apple, sniff it well. Smelling can be better than eating. Smell the table. Smell the floor. Smell the computer screen. Why should dogs have all the fun? Greenblatt’s Legacy - Rub your palms together hard, so you make those little black rolls of dead skin. Those are called “Blatties.” They’re named after an early computer hacker at MIT. Zen Fluid Dynamics - Sit in a sunbeam in a dimly-lit room. Light a stick of incense, hold it vertically, then move it upwards and stop suddenly, with a jerk. A perfect smoke-ring will be launched from the burning tip. Move the incense upwards, then suddenly jerk downwards, then repeat. You can launch fast smoke-rings through the center of slow ones, create side-by side rows, etc. In a draft-free room they persist for ages, and soon the air will be full of huge grey thin circles. Contemplate the silent Chaos. Page 24

MY FAVOURITE - FABULOUS - FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF Wine, I love wine! By far one of my favourite, fabulous and fantastic things! There is nothing better than a nice glass of wine with your dinner or your favourite book. There is even a winery right here – Field Stone Fruit Wines just outside of Strathmore. Did you know there are about 400 species of oak, though only about 20 are used in making oak barrels? Of the trees that are used, only 5% is suitable for making high-grade wine barrels. The average age of a French oak tree harvested for use in wine barrels is 170 years! Poor oak trees! Foot treading of grapes is still used in producing a small quantity of the best port wines. In ancient Babylon, the bride’s father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead (fermented honey beverage) he could drink for a month after the wedding. Haha! Are you thinking what I am?! Because their calendar was lunar or moon-based, this period of free mead was called the “honey month,” or what we now call the “honeymoon.” By swirling your wine, oxygen is invited into the glass, which allows the aromas to escape. For those of you who are unsure about all the different wines out there here is a quick guide to figure them all out. Sauvignon Blanc - Sauvignon Blanc is a white wine best known for its grassy, herbal flavours. Sauvignon Blanc is also called Fume Blanc, and is a popular choice for fish and shellfish dishes. Pinot Gris (Pinot Grigio) - The low acidity of this white varietal helps produce rich, lightly perfumed wines that are often more colourful than other whites. The best ones have pear and spice-cake flavours. Chardonnay - Chardonnay is a white wine, which can range from clean and crisp with a hint of varietal flavour to rich and complex oak-aged wines. Chardonnay typically balances fruit, acidity and texture. This varietal goes well with everything from fish and poultry to cheeses, spicy foods and nut sauces. Gewurztraminer - Gewurztraminer is a white wine that produces distinctive wines rich in spicy aromas and full flavours, ranging from dry to sweet. Smells and flavours of litchi nuts, gingerbread, vanilla, grapefruit, and honeysuckle come out of this varietal. It is often a popular choice for Asian cuisines and pork-based sausages. Riesling - Rieslings are white wines known for their floral perfume. Depending on where they’re made, they can be crisp and bone-dry, full-bodied and spicy or luscious and sweet. The flavour is often of peaches, apricots, honey, and apples and pairs well with duck, pork, and roast vegetables. Champagne/Sparkling Wine - These wines are made effervescent in the wine making process. Champagnes and sparkling wines range in style from very dry (Natural), dry (brut) and slightly sweet (extra Dry) to sweet (sec and Demi-Sec). Many sparkling wines are also identified as Blanc de Blancs (wines made from white grapes) or Blanc de Noirs (wines produced from red grapes). Pinot Noir - Pinot Noir is a red wine of light to medium body and delicate, smooth, rich complexity with earthy aromas. They are less tannic than a cabernet sauvignon or a merlot. Pinot Noirs exude the flavour of baked cherries, plums, mushrooms, cedar, cigars, and chocolate. Zinfandel – Primarily thought of as a Californian varietal (though recently proven to have originated from vineyards in Croatia), Zinfandel is a red wine with light to full body and berry-like or spicy flavours. The Zinfandel grape is also widely used in the popular off-dry blush wine known as White Zinfandel. The Red Zinfandel pairs well with moderately spicy meat dishes and casseroles. Merlot - Merlot is a red wine with medium to full body and herbaceous flavours. Merlot is typically softer in taste than Cabernet Sauvignon. Its flavours and aromas include blackberry, baked cherries, plums, chocolate, and mocha. Cabernet Sauvignon - Cabernet Sauvignon is a red wine known for its depth of flavour, aroma and ability to age. It is full-bodied and intense, with cherry- currant and sometimes-herbal flavours. Happy June and happy wine sipping. By: Kathryn Hartwell www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Red wine should be served at room temperature. Uncork red wines an hour before drinking them; this is called allowing the wine to ‘breathe’. This will develop the flavour. White and Rose wines should be served chilled for about 1-2 hours in a refrigerator, the better the wine, the shorter the time, but don’t uncork them until you are ready to serve. If time is short, wine chills quicker with the cork out. Don’t over chill though as this starts to dull the flavour.

I am an Almond

My name is Antonio and I am an Almond.

My ancestors lived in China many thousands of years ago until the traders carried us down the ancient Silk Road to Greece, Turkey and the Middle East. You would not think it, but we are part of the plum family and our name comes from the old Latin word “amygdalus” which means tonsil plum. We are so very special that people would grind us up and make bread to serve to Egypt’s pharaohs, and the Romans showered newlyweds with us as a fertility charm. Today, people give us as gifts at weddings; a bag of sugared almonds represents children, happiness, romance, good health and fortune. In Sweden, cinnamon-flavoured rice pudding with an almond hidden inside is a Christmas custom. Find me, and good fortune is yours for a year. Botanically speaking, we are a fruit. On the tree, our fruit looks like a small, elongated peach with a hard greenish-gray husk. When we are mature, our husk splits open to reveal the shell where I grow. Spanish missionaries are credited for bringing my cousins to California, now the world's largest producer of over 100 varieties of us. We are now grown in many of the countries that border the Mediterranean Sea including Spain, Italy, Portugal and Morocco, as well as in California. My mother, the almond tree, is a very glorious medium-size tree that bears fragrant pink and white flowers and, like the peach, cherry and apricot trees, the almond tree bears fruits with stone-like seeds (or pits) within. The seed of the almond fruit is what we are - the almond nut. We are concentrated in protein. A quarter-cup contains 7.62 grams-more protein than is provided by the typical egg, which contains 5.54 grams. We are high in monounsaturated fats, the same type of health-promoting fats as are found in olive oil, which have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease. In addition to our cholesterol-lowering effects, we have the ability to reduce heart disease risk because of the antioxidant action of the vitamin E we have, as well as to the LDLlowering effect of our monounsaturated fats. In addition to healthy fats and vitamin E, a quarter-cup of us contains almost 99 mg of magnesium (that's 24.7% of the daily value for this important mineral), plus 257 mg of potassium. Magnesium is nature's own calcium channel blocker. When there is enough magnesium around, veins and arteries breathe a sigh of relief and relax, which lessens resistance and improves the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Studies show that a deficiency of magnesium is not only associated with heart attack but that immediately following a heart attack, lack of sufficient magnesium promotes free radical injury to the heart. Potassium, an important electrolyte involved in nerve transmission and the contraction of all muscles including the heart, is another mineral that is essential for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. We promote your cardiovascular health by providing 257 mg of potassium and only 0.3 mg of sodium, making us an especially good choice in protecting against high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. We also have manganese and copper; two trace minerals that are essential cofactors of a key oxidative enzyme called superoxide dismutase. Just one-quarter cup of us supplies 45.0% of the daily value for manganese, and 20.0% of the daily value for copper. Riboflavin (vitamin B2) also plays at least two important roles in the body's energy production. When active in energy production pathways, riboflavin takes the form of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) or flavin mononucleotide (FMN). In these forms, riboflavin attaches to protein enzymes called flavoproteins that allow oxygen-based energy production to occur. Like many "antioxidant" molecules, glutathione must be constantly recycled, and it is vitamin B2 that allows this recycling to take place. That same one-quarter cup of eating us will supply your cells with 17.6% of the daily value for riboflavin. Now you’re not going to believe this: twenty potent antioxidant flavonoids were identified in my skin. Further blood tests demonstrated that eating me with my skin significantly increases both flavonoids and vitamin E in your body. This could have significant health implications, especially as you age. My friends who eat me at least 4 times a week showed a 37% reduced risk of coronary heart disease compared to those who never or seldom eat us. Just a little tip, to lower your risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart disease, enjoy a handful of me or tablespoon of almond butter at least 4 times a week. You won’t be sorry. I’m here to look after you! So, to make sure you try me out I have included a few recipes for you to try. Enjoy! Antonio Almond

MAD LIBS

Mad Libs are games in which players supply the words for stories without knowing how the words will be used. The words are then inserted in the story, and the completed story is read aloud. The results can be hysterically funny! You can play with as little as 2 people. Only one person sees a copy of the story to begin with. That person will ask for random words to place into the Mad Libs. To pick words properly you will need a refresher in your English lesson. Adjective - a word that describes or clarifies a noun. Adjectives describe nouns by giving some information about an object’s size, shape, age, colour, origin or material. Example – It’s a BIG table Noun - a word used to name a person, animal, place or thing. Example – Did you see that Bird? Verb - A verb is a word that expresses action or a state of being. APRICOT NUT BREAD ½ cup coarsely chopped hazelnuts or walnuts 1 tbsp. baking powder 1 ½ cups coarsely chopped dried apricots 1 tsp. baking soda ¼ cup apple juice ½ tsp. salt 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour 1 large egg 2 large egg whites ½ cup sugar 2/3 cup non-fat plain yogurt 3 tbsp. canola oil 1 tbsp. grated lemon zest 1 tsp. vanilla extract ¾ cup golden raisins Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly oil a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan or coat it with non-stick cooking spray; set aside. In a shallow pan, toast hazelnuts or walnuts in the oven for 3 to 5 minutes, or until golden brown and fragrant. Set aside to cool. In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup of the apricots and nectar or juice. Bring to a simmer, remove from heat and let stand for 10 minutes. Transfer the apricots and their liquid to a food processor and process until a chunky puree forms; set aside. (You should have about 1/2 cup puree.) In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another large bowl, whisk egg, egg whites, sugar, yogurt, oil, lemon zest, vanilla, and the apricot puree. Stir the apricot mixture into the dry ingredients just until combined. Fold in raisins, hazelnuts, and the remaining 1 cup chopped apricots. (The batter will be thick.) Turn the batter out into the prepared pan, smoothing the top. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Let bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Loosen the edges and invert the loaf onto a wire rack to cool. Submitted By: Peggy Robinson

Either butter or line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats, nuts, seeds, wheat germ, ground cinnamon and salt. What is NuVet and is it Right for Your Dog or Cat?

Have you heard of NuVet? If you have not yet tried it, you and your pet are missing out on the newest and most incredible supplement for pets that has ever come into Canada. We all know that we don’t always eat the right food, but even when we try to, our fruits and vegetables no longer contain all the necessary elements that these same sources may have once contained; so we are more and more dependent on food supplements. What about your dog or cat? Would they still need one especially if they are on a premium dog or cat food? Well 23 years ago a team of three veterinarians, a nutritional scientist, a pharmacist, and a physician who were all fed up with sub-standard nutrition and nutritional supplements in the pet industry, started to develop a holistic, all natural supplement that would work at the source of the problem — not just treat the symptom. After 8 years of diligent trials they finally perfected an incredible product which has become known as NuVet. If you are old enough, you may remember a time when dogs were able to eat almost anything and live to at least fifteen years or beyond. Today, it’s all too common that we hear about dogs or cats having a cancerous growth or experiencing kidney failure because of diabetes or the like — something almost unheard of a few decades ago. We also have come to believe that once diagnosed with some of these horrible diseases that life of our beloved pet is over as we know it. All NuVet® products have been on the forefront of pet health for over 14 years. They are more than mere vitamins, NuVet® goes beyond industry standards by using only 100% all natural, human grade ingredients that are microscopically tested for purity and potency and are all formulated in an FDA approved laboratory. It was because most pets lack proper nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in their diet, even when they are getting the top of the line food, that NuVet® scientists realized the necessity of filling this dangerous gap. Commercial pet foods can contain harmful “by-products” and useless fillers that can be toxic to pets, causing allergies and serious diseases. This kind of atypical diet creates a scenario whereby their food may actually be creating unstable oxygen molecules known as Free Radicals. These free radicals have been shown to be a cause for a wide range of health problems including heart disease, arthritis, cataracts, premature aging and many different forms of cancer. Even though NuVet Plus is a revolutionary pet supplement, this supplement is not costly. For example, one major trip to the vet could pay for a lifetime supply of NuVet. The following are just a few of the health issues that NuVet can alleviate: Allergies of all kinds, Skin and Coat problems including Scratching, Biting and Hot spots. Arthritis and joint problems, Premature aging, Low energy levels, Cushing’s and Addison’s Disease, Cataracts and Tear stains, Digestive problems and Heart disease, Incontinence, Ear infections, as well as Reducing some Cancers and eliminating others. NuVet Labs are very particular, and screen each individual before they purchase this product in order that it does not get purchased by breeders of puppy mills. It is for reasons like this that you will not find it in any pet store. Therefore, there are very few places you will be able to purchase NuVet in Canada. IniPage 32

tially NuVet has only been available from us; k9trainingandsupplies. com, but we have opened up to include two groomers in our area. After using this product on their own dogs and noticing remarkable results, they too thought that it would be in their clients’ best interest to have it available to them. So now you can also find NuVet at; Designer Mutts, in Langdon, AB and Quality Dog Grooming in Strathmore, AB. To read more on each ingredient that is used in this product and the reasons why, as well as to see some truthful testimonials, please go to k9trainingandsupplies.com. If you have found yourself to be one of the unfortunate ones who are watching your animal suffer with an illness or any allergies, do both of you a huge favor and start them on a path to health and wellness before it gets any worse. On the other hand, it is not necessary to wait until you see a problem. In fact it has been proven that it is definitely better to be proactive and boost their immune system so that they are able to combat disease and premature aging. It truly will be the best thing you can do for yourself and Sandy Cormier ~ K9 Training and Supplies all your family members.

We believe it’s time to find AARCS a home!

We are looking to open a multi-functional facility to serve as a head quarters for AARCS. This would encompass an emergency, temporary and quarantine facility, provide additional storage, as well as an operations centre/administration office. www.whisperingspiritstables.com Currently, we are only able to take as many animals as we have space for in our foster care network and we have been operating at capacity consistently for the past year. Too often, we are faced with leaving animals behind to return for them when space becomes available. In addition, we have seen an increase in parasites and disease; including distemper, parvo, fleas, ticks, worms, gardia and, coccidia. For the safety of our foster homes and resident pets, whenever possible, we would bring the animals through the temporary shelter for a 10-14 day quarantine period for animals we suspect may be sick or have been in contact with other sick animals. Other animals may only stay a day or two, still allowing us to treat for parasites prior to animals entering our foster home network. Another major benefit we see is during their short stay at the facility we can better understand the needs/temperament of the dog allowing us to place them in the right foster home equipped to deal with their on-going needs. How YOU Can Help: 1) Please consider donating to our cause. You can do this online or by simply writing a cheque. All donations over $20 are eligible for a tax receipt. Gifts $500 and over will receive a special 2 line posting on the AARCS website page dedicated to the shelter, and A commemorative plaque will be mounted in AARCS headquarters for donations of $1,000 and greater. Invite your friends and family to support this awesome cause and your passion. Just ask Brittany, one of our Volunteers. She asked the CEO of her company if he would support our cause and he wrote a personal cheque to AARCS for $10,000! All you have to do is ask. Many employers today have matching programs, be sure to ask your employer what they offer when you donate to a non-profit. You can easily turn $100, into $200! In addition, many employers are rewarding employees for their volunteer hours by donating to the organization. Jen, our website updater, received $1000 donation from Encana by simply submitting her hours! Our admin team, which includes grant writers are always looking for opportunities to submit our programs and projects for consideration. If you know of a corporate sponsorship program or an institution that we can apply to for funding, please let us know by emailing admin@albertaanimalrescuecrew.com We are an organization run by volunteers, so if you have the time, please consider volunteering at one of our many fundraising events. And if you can, please foster!

It’s All About the Point of View

HER DIARY: Tonight I thought he was acting weird. We’d made plans to meet at a bar and have a drink. I was shopping with my friends all day long, and I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment. Our conversation wasn’t flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed but he remained quiet and absent. I asked him what was wrong; he said nothing was wrong. I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said it had nothing to do with me and not to worry. On the way home I told him that I loved him, he simply smiled and kept driving. I can’t explain his behaviour. I don’t know why he didn’t say “I love you too.” When we got home I felt as if I had lost him, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there and watched TV. He seemed distant and absent. Finally, I decided to go to bed. About ten minutes later he came to bed and to my surprise he responded to my caress and we made love, but I still felt that he was distracted and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep—I cried. I don’t know what to do. I’m almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster. HIS DIARY: I shot the worst round of golf in my life today, but at least it ended lucky.

BODY PARTS – TEETH

There is nothing like a beautiful smile with a beautiful set of teeth. They really are the first things people look at when you are talking, laughing or smiling. Looking after your beautiful teeth is very important. You know what they say, “a first impression is a lasting impression”. Teeth are small, calcified, whitish structures found in your jaw that are used to break down food. The roots of teeth are embedded in the Mandible bone or the Maxillary bone and are covered by gums. Teeth are made of multiple tissues of varying density and hardness. They are among the most distinctive (and long-lasting) features of mammal species. Palaeontologists use teeth to identify fossil species and determine their relationships. In humans, the first set, called the “baby” teeth, normally start to appear at about six months of age. Normal tooth eruption at about six months, known as “teething,” can be painful. Humans usually have 20 primary teeth and 32 permanent teeth. Among primary teeth, ten are found in the maxilla and the rest in the mandible. Teeth are classified as incisors, canines, premolars and molars. In the primary set of teeth, there are two types of incisors - centrals and laterals - and two types of molars - first and second. All primary teeth are replaced with permanent counterparts. Among permanent teeth, 16 are found in the maxilla & the other 16 are in the mandible. The maxillary teeth are the maxillary central incisor, maxillary lateral incisor, maxillary canine, maxillary first premolar, maxillary second premolar, maxillary first molar, maxillary second molar, and maxillary third molar. The mandibular teeth are the mandibular central incisor, mandibular lateral incisor, mandibular canine, mandibular first premolar, mandibular second premolar, mandibular first molar, mandibular second molar, and mandibular third molar. Third molars are commonly called “wisdom teeth” and may never erupt into the mouth or form at all. The bottom teeth are used more for the grinding of food and the top front teeth are mainly used for biting. Enamel is the hardest and most highly mineralized substance of the body. It is one of the four major tissues that make up the tooth, along with dentin, cementum, and dental pulp. Ninety-six percent of enamel consists of mineral, with water and organic material comprising the rest. Since enamel is semi translucent, the colour of dentin and any restorative dental material underneath the enamel strongly affects the appearance of a tooth. Dentin, which is less mineralized and less brittle, compensates for enamel and is necessary as a support. Unlike dentin and bone, enamel does not contain collagen. Instead, it has two unique classes of proteins called amelogenins and enamelins. Dentin is

the substance between enamel or cementum and the pulp chamber. It is secreted by the odontoblasts of the dental pulp. The formation of dentin is known as dentinogenesis. The porous, yellow-hued material is made up of 70% inorganic materials, 20% organic materials, and 10% water by weight. Because it is softer than enamel, it decays more rapidly and is subject to severe cavities if not properly treated, but dentin still acts as a protective layer and supports the crown of the tooth. Cementum is a specialized bone like substance covering the root of a tooth. It is approximately 45% inorganic material (mainly hydroxyapatite), 33% organic material (mainly collagen) and 22% water. Its colouration is yellowish and it is softer than either dentin or enamel. The principal role of cementum is to serve as a medium by which the periodontal ligaments can attach to the tooth for stability. The dental pulp is the central part of the tooth filled with soft connective tissue. This tissue contains blood vessels and nerves that enter the tooth from a hole at the apex of the root. The pulp is commonly called “the nerve” of the tooth. There it is in a nut shell teeth are more complex then you think. So remember to brush and floss and take care of your beautiful smile – it is the only one you have! By: Kathryn Hartwell

ATTENTION ALL GROWN-UPS CONTINUED

Where’d I leave it? - Teach yourself to talk understandably while your mouth is wide open. If you ever accidentally cut your lips off or misplace your lower jaw, this will come in quite handy. “Tleese take ne tll a hos-thitle innnediatly!” Use both hands to stretch your lips wide, then talk to friends with your jaw clamped shut. They will become VERY aware of your skill, and it won’t wear off very quickly either. Maybe never. Gravity warped - Another childhood trick: when riding in the car, and approaching some railroad tracks (or other large hump), hold your arms upwards! The sudden drop in g-forces makes your stomach feel VERY weird, and holding your arms over your head seems to amplify the effect. Two-inch sparks - Create REALLY BIG “static” sparks: on a winter’s day, scuff your feet on the rug so that your body becomes electrified. Now stand near a victim. Wiggle your shoes while pressing on the rug, so that you build up some charged footprints. Now suddenly LEAP INTO THE AIR and touch your victim with your finger at the same time, while you’re still in flight. The spark will be much stronger than normal. (It’s called “capacitive voltage multiplication.” and VandeGraaff generators employ this effect.) Burst of flavour - While reading, eat something. Notice that the flavour vanishes as soon as you get involved with the story you’re reading? Now concentrate on your mouth, and the flavour explodes into reality. By concentrating on the text or on your mouth, you can make the flavour flash on and off. WEIRD! Balloon gyroscope - Put a coin inside a balloon, then blow it up and tie it off. Shake it and then swirl the balloon around, and the penny will start rolling around in a circle! It makes a whirring noise and smoothly circulates. Get it going fast, then let it go, and the balloon whirrs and wobbles maniacally. Psych Experiment - Get some epoxy or crazy-glue and attach a quarter to the ground. Who can resist stopping to grab it? Arrrg! Put it in a spot that you pass by every day and see how long it survives. Foam blast - Mix a bit of whipped cream with a little water, stir well, then pour in a large amount of warm cola. FOOSH! Giant explosion of foam all over. If you do the same with milk and cola, very little happens. The microscopic bubbles in the whipped cream are the cause.

Dr. Elizabeth Robinson ~ Dr. Leanne Lesniak NEW PATIENTS WELCOME www.crystalridgedental.com #11 - 55 Wheatland Trail, Strathmore A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his badly behaved 3 year-old grandson. It’s obvious to her that he has his hands full with the child screaming for sweets in the sweet aisle, biscuits in the biscuit aisle, and for fruit, cereal and pop in the other aisles. Meanwhile, Granddad is working his way around, saying in a controlled voice, “Easy, William, we won’t be long, easy, boy.” Another outburst, and she hears the granddad calmly say, “It’s okay, William, just a couple more minutes and we’ll be out of here. Hang in there, boy.” At the checkout, the little terror is throwing items out of the cart, and Granddad says again in a controlled voice, “William, William, relax buddy, don’t get upset. We’ll be home in five minutes; stay cool, William.” Very impressed, the woman goes outside where the grandfather is loading his groceries and the boy into the car. She said to the elderly gentleman, “It’s none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don’t know how you did it. That whole time, you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying things would be okay. William is very lucky to have you as his grandpa.” “Thanks,” said the grandfather, “but I’m William .......the little brat’s name is Kevin.”

Dear Lifelines, Lately I have been feeling down and despite having the doctor say I’m in excellent health, I can’t seem to shake the blues. Signed, Feeling Low Dear Low, Sounds like you made a great choice in heading to the doctor to check out your physical health. There are so many factors that can impact our health and mood that it really is a wonder that any of us can feel upbeat on a regular basis. Recently I spoke with a friend who ended up having very low vitamin D levels that showed up in some blood work tests. The result of the low vitamin D was in some changes in mood and feeling very low and depressed. As well, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can be common during the winter months and special lights can be purchased that offer users full spectrum light that can help improve mood. It’s necessary to check with your doctor on possible causes of your mood changes as there are many possibilities. In addition, it’s important to stay on top of your health with a health care practitioner and keep up on your vitamins and minerals and in eating well-balanced meals. Naturopaths many times offer excellent advice and health options that might not otherwise be considered in mainstream health practices like trying out various elimination diets or addressing hormone level fluctuations. It’s incredible how what you eat, how you move, and who you spend time around can impact the way you feel. Switch things up a bit and turn off the tv, try a new radio station, join a social network, try some local community activities, volunteer with youngsters, try a dance class, visit an old friend, or try attending a church service other than your own faith for a change. You can even make a calendar with local activities and events that you want to try and get one week as jam-packed as you can bear and then assess your week and find out Page 44

One way to really critically examine your life and make changes toward living more positively is in interviewing the elders in your community. Our senior citizens are a huge resource and they have so much to offer in the way of wisdom and experience. Many have had very challenging lives that put our life challenges to a more balanced perspective. Why not take time this month to visit the seniors centre, hang out with some older citizens and get curious about some of the great adventures and inspiring lives that our local seniors have lived. It might be interesting to find out from them how much attitude has played in their experiences in overcoming adversity. In engaging in a discussion with a senior, not only will you likely be much better off for it, but you will also be sharing time with someone who might not be feeling too terribly appreciated at this time in their life. It could be just the activity that you both might benefit from. Let us know how it turns out! Sincerely, Lifelines “Your brain is the hardware of your soul. It is the hardware of your very essence as a human being. You cannot be who you really want to be unless your brain works right. Most nuts and seeds are high in fat, but that isn’t necessarily bad, as long as you stay in control. Eating portion-controlled amounts of the good kind of fat can placate your cravings and keep you from over-indulging in something far more unhealthy. Because almost all nuts and seeds are super high in fat, it may surprise you that we are calling them fat-fighting foods. However, the fat is unsaturated and may actually aid weight loss and does have disease-fighting properties. As long as you can restrain yourself, nuts and seeds can indeed be fat-fighters and help with weight loss. By taking the place of more traditional protein sources, nuts and seeds can actually reduce the saturated fat and calories in your overall diet. Nuts and grains are high in protein and nutrients, though their fat content (75 to 95 percent of total calories) means you shouldn’t eat too many at a time. Macadamia, the gourmet of nuts, is the highest in fat. Walnuts and Brazil nuts are your best bet because they’re rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Of all the nuts, peanuts provide the most complete protein. As an alternative protein source, they also provide a good dose of healthy fats, including oleic acid, the healthy fat found in olive oil. Peanuts are rich in antioxidant polyphenols like those found in berries. Studies indicate that roasting actually increases the amount of polyphenol called p-coumaric, making roasted peanuts a true protector of cells. Studies at Loma Linda University in California found that eating nuts five times a week (about two ounces a day) lowered participants’ blood cholesterol levels by 12 percent. Walnuts were used, but similar results have been reported with almonds and peanuts. It appears that replacing saturated fat in the diet with the monounsaturated fat in nuts may be the key. It makes sense, then, to eat nuts instead of other fatty foods. Some nuts, notably walnuts and Brazil nuts, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which may contribute further to the fight against heart disease and possibly even arthritis. These healthful nuts also may play a role in weight loss and help you manage your weight better. In addition, seeds and some nuts contain significant amounts of vitamin E. As an antioxidant, vitamin E can help prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which can damage arteries. More heartening news: Seeds are a good source of folic acid. Researchers have found that folic acid helps prevent the build-up of homocysteine. High levels of this amino acid have been linked to heart disease, dementia, and broken bones in people with osteoporosis. Eat plenty of foliate to keep your homocysteine levels in check. Seeds, peanuts, and peanut butter are super sources of niacin. Nuts are chock-full of hard-to-get minerals, such as copper, iron, and zinc. Seeds are among the better plant sources of iron and zinc. Iron helps your blood deliver oxygen to your muscles and brain, while zinc helps boost your immune system. Moreover, nuts do their part to keep bones strong by providing magnesium, manganese, and boron. One caution: Toxicity problems do not usually occur from eating foods, only from taking too much of a vitamin or mineral in supplement form. However, Brazil nuts contain an astonishingly high amount of selenium: about 70 to 90 micrograms per nut. In 2000, the National Academy of Sciences set the tolerable upper limit (UL) for selenium at 400 micrograms per day for adults. So, go easy on Brazil nuts, eating maybe one or two per day. So eat your nuts and check out Luscious Joys in the magazine where I have included a few nut recipes and this month’s “I AM A” is all about almonds. By: Kathryn Hartwell

How old is too old? Blog written by Fairfax Cryobank Family Forum Moderator Desiree

Is 40 really the new 30? Members of the Fairfax Cryobank Family Forum say so with a resounding yes! There are many reasons people are waiting longer to have children nowadays. Sometimes it is because Mr. Right hasn’t shown up yet. Sometimes couples struggle with fertility issues for years. Sometimes women are career focused and just not ready to make that commitment. Whatever the reason, more and more women are choosing to become pregnant and are having healthy babies well into their 40’s.

Board Break-athon for Relay for Life fundraiser

As we all know, the Relay for Life in Chestermere is on June 24 – 25 and there is a lot of fundraising going on around town right now to raise money for cancer research. The owners of the Canadian Tae Kwon Do College here in Chestermere have been personally touched in their families with cancer and have entered a team in the Relay. The school is performing a unique fundraiser at the Relay – a Board Break-athon! They are selling boards which are generously being donated by The Motor Company, and those who purchase these boards can write the name of a friend or family member who has been affected by cancer on the board. At the Relay, the students of Canadian Tae Kwon Do College will be performing a mass breaking of these boards as a symbolization of breaking through to the cure for cancer. These boards are available for $5.00 per board and all money raised will be donated to cancer research! The goal is to break 400 boards at the Relay! Please give Danny or Shelley a call at the Canadian Tae Kwon Do College (403) 277-3420 to purchase your boards. Page 48

Finally, the agent: “Are you sure that’s the name of the town?” “Yes, what flights do you have?” replied the customer. After some searching, the agent came back with, “I’m sorry, ma’am, I’ve looked up every airport code in the country and can’t find ‘Hippopotamus’ anywhere.” The customer retorted, “Oh don’t be silly. Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!” The agent scoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, “You don’t mean Buffalo, do you?” “That’s it! I knew it was a big animal!”

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais Join me each month as I review a great read. My passions are fantasy and science-fiction, but I do read other genres. Really, I do. I also lean toward local authors, when possible, as I think we have a wealth of artistic talent here in Alberta. I currently live in Strathmore with my wife, Connie, and my two children, Kieran and Maia-Lynn. I’ve been a teacher for most of the time we’ve lived in the province, which is over a decade now. My debut novel, MetalMagic: Talisman, was released in September, 2010, and I’m diligently working on the sequel—that is, when I’m not reading books or writing for my column. Yours in Truth, Derek Donais

Nytstars

Jo-Anne Sieppert Rosedog Books, 2009 ISBN: 9781434993892 “... Your brother doesn’t trust you, does he? He is jealous, I assume; he is the oldest, after all. He doubts your intentions, perhaps? Maybe he believes you are not good enough to be King. Candor seems to think so. He is not the only one, is he? You see it, too.” — Candor Tyler Leeds has always suffered from horrible nightmares. Things have gotten so bad, in fact, that Tyler has become a pariah in school. He’s teased mercilessly by the ‘in crowd’ for his differences. He’s also targeted by nasty teachers because he often succumbs to the exhaustion of sleep deprivation and nods off during class. His brother, Michael, is his only real friend, but he can’t protect Tyler from everything. Lately, Tyler’s dreams have become so vivid he is certain they must be real. When he finds a mysterious, star-shaped talisman in a local curio shop called The Mysterious Blue, little does Tyler know that he’s stumbled upon the link between himself and the world of his dreams. This is the premise of Nytstars, by Jo-Anne Sieppert. It’s a middle grade to young adult urban fantasy that’s sure to have appeal for young readers, especially those who’ve ever felt like they don’t belong or are struggling to find a purpose. The main character, Tyler, is capable enough but isn’t very outgoing, a behaviour developed to cope with his nightmare-related problems. Michael is more popular and successful at school, something that Tyler secretly holds against him even as his brother helps to shield Tyler from the worst of his troubles with others, including their parents. When Tyler’s life becomes more and more difficult because of the bullying of his peers and the intrusion of his nightmares, Tyler runs. For some unknown reason, The Mysterious Blue becomes the place he always ends up. It seems to hold the answers to all of his questions, and possibly the key to realize his wildest dreams. Lodiss, an old woman who cares for the shop, reveals to the boys that they are more than just normal kids. They are Nytstars, beings who wield great power in another world, the world of Nyt. Lodiss gives them a volume of ancient wisdom and each receives a magical necklace. The former will allow them to learn about their new discovery and the latter gives them the ability to focus their powers when travelling there. The most important thing the brothers receive, however, is the knowledge that not only are they important people in the Nyt world—the connection to which has given Tyler his nightmares—but that Tyler is a king of this realm. The revelations bring both opportunities and challenges. Tyler has found a world in which he’s very much needed and popular. This newfound status, however, begins to drive a wedge between the Leeds siblings as Michael must face the fact that, in the land of Nyt, Tyler’s word is law. Michael begins to see changes in his brother, changes that are not all pleasant. Tyler, for his part, starts to believe Michael is jealous of him and his newly assumed role. This draws Tyler closer to Candor, a mysterious figure from the Nyt world; one who they’ve been told is evil and serves the King of Darkness. But, the man seems to understand Tyler and has explanations for many of his questions. In the end, the survival of Tyler’s kingdom and its defenders comes down to the relationship between Tyler and Michael. Can they continue to trust and believe in one another? Or, will Tyler become the dark king of a mysterious land, giving in to the frustration and anger that years of bullying have created and his new power has unleashed? If you have a youngster at home who loves books about mysterious places and fantastic events, or who just loves books, then expect some loss of sleep on his or her own part while staying up to finish Nytstars. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Pizza Fun

Ways to order a pizza the fun way... 1. If using a touch-tone, press random numbers while ordering. Ask person taking the order to stop doing that. 2. Make up a charge-card name. Ask if they accept it. 3. Order a Big Mac Extra Value Meal. 4. Terminate the call with, “Remember, we never had this conversation.” 5. Tell them to put the crust on top this time. 6. Do not name the toppings you want. Rather, spell them out. 7. Put an extra edge in your voice when you say “crazy bread.” 8. Stutter on the letter “p.” 9. Ask what the order taker is wearing. 10. Crack your knuckles into the receiver. 11. Say hello, act stunned for five seconds, then behave as if they called you. 12. Change your accent every three seconds. 13. If they repeat the order to make sure they have it right, say “OK. That’ll be $10.99; please pull up to the first window.” 14. Rent a pizza. 15. Ask if you get to keep the pizza box. When they say yes, heave a sigh of relief. 16. Move the mouthpiece farther and farther from your lips as you speak. When the call ends, jerk the mouthpiece back into place and scream goodbye at the top of your lungs. 17. Order a slice, not a whole pizza. 18. Ask for the guy who took your order last time.

WHEN A real-estate agency hadn’t sold our house, we decided to do it ourselves. I placed ads in the local papers, spray painted a “For Sale” message on a sign board and posted it outside. When my husband came home that evening, he told me, laughing, that my sign was the most truthful one he had ever seen. Confused, I rushed outside to take a look. In my haste I had printed - “For Sale by Ower.” FIRST National Bank ., tried to encourage business through billboard advertising, but conveyed quite a different message when the following ad was displayed: “Loans make life easier, at FIRST.” “Yes, the kitchen is a bit small, but with a mortgage like this you won’t do much cooking anyway.” If you owe the bank $100, that’s your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that’s the bank’s problem.

AFTER moving to a small town, I found that I really enjoyed the easy going ways of the local merchants. I was concerned, however, when I took my husband’s new suit to the cleaners. “Sorry, ma’am,” said the clerk, “my wife’s not here now, but we could have it ready for you by seven.” “That’s fine,” I said, thinking of times I had waited for days for this service in the city. “Just knock on the back door when you get here,” he added, walking away with the suit. “Fine,” I said hesitantly. “But don’t I need a ticket?” “Nope,” he said and started to leave again. “But wait a minute,” I persisted. “How will you know which suit is mine?” He gave me a baffled look. “Well,” he replied, “you’re gonna tell us, aren’t you?” www.thenewsyneighbor.com

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand - “Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

Old World Style Long Haired Shepherd’s.

Going to B.C. this summer? How would you like to come home with one of these beautiful Old World Style Long Haired Shepherd’s. Now your dream can come true. These dogs have an easygoing attitude and are home raised on the farm – no kennels or cages. Vet checked with complete health records, boosters and wormed. A quality breeder for over 18 years. Lots of references. Not only can you visit and see all the little cuties at the farm but now you can view them at the North Okanogan’s only outdoor flee market in beautiful Enderby B.C. The people’s choice flea market is located right on the highway at the south end of Enderby. And who doesn’t love a flea market. Lorilee will have a couple of her amazing Shepherd puppies there for you to look at and a binder of the others available at the farm – just up the hill. Sample gourmet homemade dog food and pick up some dog bone treats for your favourite furry friend too. A portion of all proceeds from the booth goes to helping out rescue dogs in need.
