REFER 3 NEW CLIENTS OR MORE & ENTER YOUR NAME AGAIN

A six-year-old boy told his father he wanted to marry the little girl across the street. The father, being modern and well-schooled in handling children, hid his smile behind his hand. “That’s a serious step,” he said. “Have you thought it out completely?” “Sure,” his young son answered. “We can spend one week in my room and the next in hers. It’s right across the street, so I can run home if I get lonely in the night.” “How about transportation?” the father asked. “I have my wagon, and we both have our tricycles,” the little boy answered. The boy had an answer to every question the father raised. Finally, in exasperation, the man asked, “What about babies? When you’re married, you’re liable to have babies, you know.” “We’ve thought about that, too,” the little boy replied. “We’re not going to have babies. Every time she lays an egg, I’m going to step on it!”

A man was in his front yard mowing grass when his attractive blonde female neighbour came out of the house and went straight to the mailbox. She opened it then slammed it shut and stormed back in the house. A little later she came out of her house again went to the mail box and again, opened it, slammed it shut again. Angrily, back into the house she went.. As the man was getting ready to edge the lawn, here she came out again, marched to the mail box, opened it and then slammed it closed harder than ever. Puzzled by her actions the man asked her, ‘Is something wrong’ To which she replied, ‘There certainly is!’ ‘ My stupid computer keeps saying, ‘YOU’VE GOT MAIL!’ www.thenewsyneighbor.com

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN

Well, we have almost reached $500.00 in pennies! We now need to choose a society or nonprofit organization who you think most deserves the money. We will decide by the response we receive from our readers. To nominate a charity that you think deserves this money please email: kathryn.newsyneighbor@gmail.com. We sure appreciate all the people who have taken the time to drop off the pennies to Saks Music in Chestermere and Ribbitz in Strathmore. We’re not there yet, so if you have pennies we will still take them. Every little penny counts! Happy Spring!

Avoidable Exposure

A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing her shower, when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbour. Before she says a word, Bob says, ‘I’ll give you $800 to drop that towel.’ After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob. After a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves. The woman puts her town on and goes back upstairs. When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, ‘Who was that?’ ‘It was Bob the next door neighbour,’ she replies. ‘Great,’ the husband says, ‘did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?’ Moral of the story: If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.

VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE NEWSY NEIGHBOR With the New Year have come new challenges for us at The Newsy Neighbor. Canada Post has increased our mailing costs dramatically – we have always worked really hard to be able to send out our publication free of charge to everyone in our distribution area. We are really sad and upset that due to the increase in postal rates, we have no choice but to change a few locations. We don’t want to leave anyone out and we really want you to continue to enjoy our publication, so we came up with the idea to offer subscriptions. This was not a easy decision to make but we must stop distribution to: Balzac, Irricana & Cluny Please subscribe by filling out the form below and we will make sure you receive your very own self-addressed copy of The Newsy Neighbor each and every month. Sorry for the change – but only those in the areas listed above will be affected – all others will still receive The Newsy Neighbor every month Free of charge. If you have problems receiving your magazine each month and your are in our free mailing distribution, please email us with your full address. Email: newsyneighbor@gmail.com If you are outside of our mailing distribution and would like to start receiving The Newsy Neighbor, please fill out a subscriptions form. Perception. Something to think about...

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes, a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace, stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried to meet his schedule. 4 minutes later: The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk. 6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again. 10 minutes: A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly. 45 minutes: The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32. 1 hour: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each. This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities. The questions rose: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context? One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made... How many other things are we missing?

We are Listening We would like to thank all of those who came out on January 16th for swimming lesson registration day. It was a successful morning, as well as the busiest registration day we have ever had! So we thank all of you for your patience and happy spirits. You helped make this day that much more successful! We received a lot of positive feedback about having registration day on a Saturday morning instead of a weekday morning. We will continue having swimming lesson registration days on Saturday mornings. We also had two computers and two debit machines this time around, which helped speed up registration. We were able to accommodate ninety in-person registrations and forty-five over-the-phone registrations in two and a half hours! We are very pleased with this outcome and will continue using the tools we have to make registration day run as smoothly as it can. The swimming lesson registration date for our spring sessions has been set for Saturday March 20th, 2010 at 9:00am. Doors will open at 8:45am.We are hosting a Bronze Cross Course in March and a National Lifeguard Society Course in April. Please call the front desk at 403-934-3325 if you are interested. Boys and Girls Club Initiative

Objective: To establish and maintain a viable program which will provide a variety of programs, services and other initiatives for children, youth and families in Strathmore and the surrounding area. Through focus groups, discussions, observations and personal experiences a lengthy list of needs/concerns were identified within our community. The following has been identified as some of the more crucial issues impacting our community today. ~ Affordable after school and summer programming. ~ Inactivity amongst our children. ~ A high number of children with low Self Esteem. ~ Violence and criminal activity amongst our young people. ~ Hungry Children. Our goal is to bring a program to our community that may in time be able to address some or all of the concerns identified. The Boys and Girls Club of Canada has been in existence for over 100 years and services over 200,000 children and youth across Canada. Their mission as outline in their brochure indicates that they are committed to‌ “providing a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, over come barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.â€? This is the vision we have for our community; to be able to provide positive programming based on the identified needs. In recognition of this need, conversations have been initiated with the Boys and Girls Club of Canada with respect to the possibility of developing a club that would support Strathmore and the surrounding areas. In an attempt to determine the level of interest and gain support, we are holding an Information Night that will be open to all interested parties; potential users, funders, service providers and possible partners. It is hoped that through this process we will gather the necessary support to move our initiative to the next stage of development.

MARCH – LOST TREASURES

Since March is our spring issue, I thought I would write about flowers. Flowers are so happy and pretty and I plant as many as I can in my garden every year. I love walking through the greenhouses looking and deciding which to choose. There is something about walking through one, which makes you feel really good. It’s like walking through the great cedar groves – something in the air and the smell awakens some deep emotion within you. Flowers just make you feel good inside - but have you ever thought about eating flowers? Well, you can. Restaurants have started putting flowers in their salads and sandwiches and adding them to the vegetables. You can add rose petals to your jams, vinegars, syrups, jellies and teas. I did a bit of research and below you will find a list of edible flowers and how you can use them! What a wonderful idea – enjoy the beauty of these flowers and now enjoy the flavour!

Edible Flowers

Arugula flowers: mild in taste, good in sandwiches or salads. Carnations: Pink, yellow, white or red flowers. Bland and sometimes bitter flavour Chamomile: delicate white flowers with yellow centers; mild and sweet for tea, salads, and as garnishes. Chives: Lavender flowers. Mild onion flavour. Chrysanthemums: White, yellow, orange, red, pink and purple flowers. Each colour has a different flavour, some strong and bitter. ** Remember to be careful if you have allergies. It’s always smart to talk to your doctor before making changes to your diet**

Daisies: White with yellow centres. Mild flavour. Day lilies: Many shades of orange and yellow. Slightly sweet, nut-like flavour. A cross between asparagus and zucchini. Interesting with pasta and mushrooms. Geraniums (scented): Pink, red, white or purple flowers. Flavoured leaves (rose, lemon, mint, apple and nutmeg). May be slightly sour or bitter. A nice addition to cake batter. Herb flowers: Most popular are chives, rosemary, thyme, oregano, marjoram, basil, onion, garlic, cilantro and sage. Recommended for salads, atop vegetables, and as a pizza topping. Honeysuckle: pale red or yellow in colour; tastes just like it smells. Lavender: purplish flowers. Lemon flavour. Excellent in cream for desserts. Lilacs: white, violet, blue, pink, white, yellow and magenta flowers. Light floral flavour. Can be slightly bitter. Marigolds: yellow, orange and gold flowers. Mild peppery taste. Some varieties less intense and bitter. Others citrusy and milder. Goes well with mushroom salad. Mustards: bright yellow flowers. Hot, pungent mustard flavour. Great in salads. Pansies: blue, orange and purple flowers. Mild flavour. Great as a garnish, in salads and for candying. Rose petals: white, yellow, orange, pink and red flowers. Sweet to bitter. Red flowers have a mineral flavour. Lighter coloured varieties are more delicate in taste. Great in jams, sugars, vinegars, syrups, jellies and teas. Safflower: orange flowers. Slightly bitter in taste. Good in salads, cooked in rice or added to pasta as a garnish. Squash: orange and yellow flowers. Vegetable flavour with the mild taste of raw squash. Great for stuffing, frying or sautÊing when whole. Cut into julienne for pancakes, omelettes, soups and salad. Tulips: wide variety of colours. Little flavour, slightly sweet or bitter. Violets: purple flowers. Mild taste (except viola odorata, which is sweet). Excellent for candying and as garnishes for desserts and tea sandwiches. FAMILY PAGE March The Universe

NASA stands for: National Aeronautics and Space Administration

I remember as a small child growing up in Stettler, Alberta, at night we would take a blanket and go and lay out on the lawn at night and look at the stars. We would find the Big Dipper and gaze upon the Milky Way. We would try to figure out the different constellations of the Aquarius and wish upon the brightest star in the sky. I was told the universe goes to infinity and I always got a funny feeling inside when I tried to figure that out – how could something go on forever without an ending? The universe is an incredible awe-inspiring thing. Something we don’t spend a lot of our time thinking about. This month’s Family Page is about our universe. We have included a Crossword puzzle and a Word find all designed by The Newsy Neighbor. We have purchased new software so we may include these two puzzles on the Family Page every month! The universe is so cool and you should really checkout the NASA web site at www.nasa.gov/. They have some really incredible pictures of the universe and other interesting information about our world and other planets. We bought one of our sons a telescope a few Christmas’s ago and it is an incredible way to spend an evening, looking at the moon and the stars. A wonderful family event, once you figure out how the telescope works and how to focus the thing! Take some time, once the warm weather returns and look at the stars. It truly can be a spiritual event to think about the possibilities. by Kathryn Hartwell

Jupiter is larger than 1,000 Earths. As you read this, the Moon is moving away from us. Each year, the Moon steals some of Earth's rotational energy, and uses it to propel itself about 3.8 centimeters higher in its orbit. I was shopping at the local supermarket where I selected: - A half-gallon of 2% milk, Just a joke.. - A carton of eggs, - A quart of orange juice, hahaha - A head of romaine lettuce, - A 2 lb. Can of coffee, and - A 1 lb. Package of bacon. As I was unloading my items on the conveyor belt to check out, an old man standing behind me watched as I placed the items in front of the cashier. While the cashier was ringing up the purchases, the old man calmly stated, ‘You must be single.’ I was a bit startled by this proclamation, but I was intrigued by his intuition, since I was indeed single. I looked at the six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about my selections that could have tipped off the old man to my marital status. Curiosity getting the better of me, I said: ‘Well, you know what, you’re absolutely right. But how on earth did you know that?’ The old man replied, ‘Cause you’re ugly.’

Gleichen is home of the Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park which opened in July 2007, this museum is on top of a hill overlooking the 6,000 acre historical park where Chief Crowfoot, one of the signers of historic Treaty 7 is buried. There is so much more to say about this great town – but only so much room. This article would not have been possible without Doris Lindman who supplied pretty much all the interesting information – thank-you Doris for all your hard work. This year is Gleichen's 100th Birthday. The Celebration will be in August 2010. l Watch for more information in future issues of The Newsy Neighbor Thanks for featuring our Town in your Spring Month issue. I moved here in 2006 and have seen the community become awaken with many new activities. This little bedroom hamlet is coming alive with welcoming community spirit. We have many fun and interesting things to do here in Gleichen. This year will be more exciting with our 100 year celebration. One of the most memorable activity for me was last year’s Bed Race. I was inspired by the racers. I will have a Bed for this year’s Race and hope to see many more participants. ~ Creative Art Perceptions

DRYER LINT The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes). He then took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material... I’m sure you know what your dryer’s lint filter looks like. Well, the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn’t go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh that’s what burns out the heating unit. You can’t SEE the film, but it’s there. It’s what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free.

You know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box...

well, this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that?! Learn something new every day! I certainly didn’t know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I’d share! NOTE: I washed it with warm soapy water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it ... the water ran right thru the screen!

Gold rush hits home

In this economic climate, everybody’s looking for innovative ways to earn extra money. But if you’re searching for hidden treasure between your sofa cushions, you’re probably looking in the wrong spot. Indeed, you’d be better served to rummage through your dresser drawers for the gold jewellery you no longer want – or, given its 1980s vintage, can no longer stand. And not so you can mail it to some far-away PO Box as advertised on American TV (there’s little guarantee of a transparent transaction) or take it to a pawnshop (that would just be seedy). It’s so you can host a gold party - the modern-day equivalent of the Tupperware soiree. Gold Party Canada pioneered the gold party in the summer of 2008 and now, finally, the ultimate girl’s night in has arrived in our community. Here’s how it works: You invite your friends, family or co-workers to a party at your home or office where all of their unwanted gold jewellery – tangled chains, broken bracelets, orphan earrings, you name it – is expertly appraised and purchased on the spot. Guests go home with an average of $250 and some go home with literally thousands. For throwing the bash, Gold Party Canada gives you, dear hostess, $25 for every guest who sells $200 or more worth of gold and $100 for hors d’oeuvres so you can entertain in style. It’s like being paid to party. Rhonda Stockwell, our local gold diva, brought Gold Party Canada to town after reading about the company in Reader’s Digest. “It is extremely exciting to provide women with a fun, safe and totally transparent environment for them to turn their unwanted gold into cash”, explains Stockwell. “In fact, with gold trading at an all-time high there has never been a better time to get your girlfriends, family, co-workers and neighbors together for a gold party”. In the end, everybody leaves a little happier and a little richer. And these days, you can’t put a price on that. www.goldpartycanada.com rhonda@goldpartycanada.com 1.403.880.7446 Page 28

READING IS A RIGHT, NOT A PRIVILEGE.

What would you do if the benefits of reading were missing from your life… how would you learn, work, or just get lost in a great story? The right to read of blind and partially sighted Canadians is in jeopardy. Without immediate government funding for accessible library services, books and essential information in accessible formats will be missing from their lives. We need your help now to urge Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial governments to partner with CNIB to support and sustain the CNIB Library and its vital services. Why do I have to swear on the Bible in court when the Ten Commandments cannot be displayed in a federal building? Yesterday, scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer. Men should take a concerned look at their beer consumption. The theory is that beer contains female hormones (contains phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women. To test the theory, 100 men were fed 8 pints of beer each within a 1-hour period. It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects: 1) Gained weight. 2) Talked excessively without making sense. 3) Became overly emotional. 4) Couldn’t drive. 5) Failed to think rationally. 6) Argued over nothing. 7) Had to sit down while urinating. 8) Refused to apologize when obviously wrong. House Training your Dog by: Douglas Bailey

House training your puppy (or grown dog) can be both frustrating and rewarding. The purpose of this article is to attempt to maximize the rewarding portion of the experience. There are several methods to accomplish this goal and I want to take a few minutes outlining the process and benefits of each. Litter Box Training Litter Box training your puppy is similar to litter training a kitten. Unfortunately, the kitten is much more “naturally inclined towards this method. This method is not really practical for a grown dog or a large breed of puppy. Remember that you must have constant contact with your puppy to use this method of training. The litter box will replace the need to take the puppy outside, making it an ideal method to use if you have no yard. A puppy litter box needs to be large and you might want to line the floor underneath in case of an accident. Keep the box on a hard-floor surface, preferably vinyl or ceramic if possible. You can fill the box with cat litter and clean it the same way you would a cat litter box. Be sure to clean regularly as puppies typically generate a lot of waste. Puppies will usually return to a place they have used before, so keeping a little bit of urine in the box will increase the likelihood of its use.

Paper Training Paper training is similar to litter box training, but leaves you with a new consideration. Somehow, you must teach the puppy to eventually go outside. The ideal way to accomplish this is to be sure to set the paper near the door. This way your puppy will become accustomed to going to the door when he needs to potty. With this method, you will need to take the puppy to the paper spot whenever you think it is time to potty. Be sure to praise your puppy when he uses the paper to potty. “Good Boy” and a pat on the head will reinforce your positive method. As the puppy learns to use the paper, move it closer and closer to the door. Eventually you will move the paper outside. Once your puppy learns to go to the door to use the paper outside, you can remove the paper and have him just use the yard. Older Dogs We’ve all heard the old adage “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Of course this is simply not true. I have house trained many older dogs that were once outside dogs. My daughter is an avid animal lover and seems to regularly volunteer my household as a dog rescue, so we have had our share of experience in this problem. It’s important to initially determine your dogs frequency of need to go outside. Most dogs will need to relieve themselves soon after eating, so be sure to take them out within a few minutes of finishing a meal. An older dog can be crate trained or command trained. If no one is with the dog for a good share of the day, the crate method is really the only option. Your dog will not soil the crate unless he absolutely cannot hold it. Please do everything possible to avoid putting him in this situation. Be sure he is taken out the crate regularly. He will soon learn the schedule and will not soil his crate. With the command method, speak the same command each time you take your dog outside. I am a believer in single word commands. Say “Potty” each time you go in the yard and praise your dog when he goes. He will soon learn why he is outside. It is best not to play with your dog outside until he learns why he is out. If your dog has an accident, tell him “no” in a stern voice and take him immediately to the yard. Be sure to praise him each time he goes outside. He will soon learn where to go.

www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Regardless of the type or age of your dog and regardless of the method you use, always remember these general rules: All dogs learn best by positive reinforcement. Your dog WANTS to please you. Be sure to praise him when he does and he will learn quickly. Your Pet will learn quickly with a routine of consistency and positive reinforcement. If you follow these general guidelines, your pet will learn quickly, and it will be a positive and rewarding experience for both of you. GOOD LUCK!

587-777-PAWS (7297) 4 Steps To Win The War Against Fleas by: Joseph Wharton Step One: Know your enemy

Fleas are the most common external parasite found on dogs and cats. A single flea can bite your pet over 400 times a day, leading to itching and painful scratching, which can in turn lead to reddening, irritated skin and hair loss in the area, or cause more serious (and costly) skin conditions like dermatitis (rashes or tiny crusts) caused by an allergic reaction to the flea´s saliva. They can also transmit the serious tapeworm parasite if your pet swallows an infested flea while self-grooming. In a single day, a flea can consume more than it´s body weight worth of blood, which can provoke serious anemia to your dog or cat. In some cases such as extreme infestations or in the case of young, ill or old pets, this can lead to death.

Step Two: Find the Flea

It is important to detect the presence of fleas on your pet before they can reach the harmful levels described above, where your pets suffering becomes evident. When the fleas first make their appearance on your pet, you might be deceived into thinking that their scratching, nibbling or licking their hair coat and skin is part of their normal grooming routine. Therefore you must check your pet periodically, especially during warm seasons or indoor conditions (heater or fireplace in use inside the house). Carefully look for fleas around the head, neck and ears of your pet, and inspect the armpits and legpits. You might see small dark fleas moving around, but don´t be misled if you don´t see them as they are very good at hiding between skin folds and fur. The best way to determine the flea´s presence in your pet is to search their coat for flea feces. To do this, rub or comb (you can use a special flea comb) your pet´s coat and dump the collected hair or litter into a damp white paper towel. If your pet has fleas, black flecks will fall onto the paper and turn red or rust color when wet. The reddish color comes from the blood sucked by the flea and transferred to the feces. If the black flecks don’t become red then it´s just regular dirt. You can also test your pets resting place with this method. If you do find fleas, you must act fast against them, as they can rapidly invade your home. Fortunately, fleas are getting easier to control as there is a wide range of safe and effective products available in the market to fight them.

Step three: Attack and Destroy the Flea

Most flea problems can be eliminated by treating the fleas directly on your pet. You can take your pet to a vet so he can determine if a prescription medication is necessary, or you can use over the counter products, such as flea collars, sprays, shampoo, liquid, topical products and powders that can be applied directly on your pet´s body. Some products kill only adult fleas, while others prevent the eggs from developing. Deciding which method is best for your case may require consultation with a veterinarian. If your pet is seriously infested, you will need to treat their resting spot and possibly your home. It is also very important that you treat any other pets in your home, as fleas can jump from one to another.

Step 4: Prevention

Due to the flea´s rapid expansion rate, they can be hard to eliminate completely, therefore prevention is essential. So whether you find fleas on your pet or not, many veterinarians recommend treating pets monthly as part of their health care routine. It is especially recommended to treat your pet at the beginning of the warm seasons, as fleas thrive in warm environments. Vacuuming your pet´s favorite spots frequently will also prevent the fleas from reproducing and invading your house. Taking these simple steps, you and your pet can enjoy a flea free environment year round. Page 36

Now THAT’s a GOOD idea!! Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster. Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mould! Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking. Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking. To really make scrambled eggs or omelettes rich, add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up. For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.

Now THAT’s a GOOD idea!! To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn’t hurt the plant and the squirrels won’t come near it. To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift-wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings. Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and – ta da! – static is gone. Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don’t dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out. Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!

O T A O T M A O II AM A TOMATO T M II A AM A Spring is coming and you all should start thinking about your garden. Tomatoes are a great addition to any garden and really easy to grow. My name is Tommy Tomato and I come from South America and originated in Peru. We took a trip to Mexico many – many thousands of years ago and helped feed the prehistoric man. The Aztecs of Central Mexico domesticated us and the word tomato comes from the Aztec tomatl. It is believed the Spanish explorer Cortez was the first to take the tomato to Europe after he captured the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City, in 1521. After the Spanish colonization of the Americas, the Spanish distributed the tomato throughout their colonies in the Caribbean. They also took it to the Philippines, from where it spread to southeast Asia and then the entire Asian continent. Tomatoes were not grown in England until the 1590s. The earliest reference to tomatoes being grown in North America is from 1710 and by the mid 18th century, they were cultivated on some Carolina plantations. Several states in the US Sun Belt became major tomato-producers, particularly Florida and California. The tomato is now grown worldwide. We are very popular and we are loaded with vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K. We have tons of lycopene, which has been extensively studied for its antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties. We help to prevent cells from heart disease, prostate, breast, lung and pancreatic cancers. Organic ketchup delivers three times as much of the cancer-fighting carotenoid and lycopene as non-organic brands. It seems highly likely the same rational will apply to all tomato products, so, for the most lycopene, choose the deepest red organic ketchup, tomato sauce, juice and other tomato products. A meta-analysis of 21 studies published in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention confirms that eating tomatoes, especially cooked tomatoes, provides protection against prostate cancer. Another study, in Europe, also suggests that enjoying tomatoes raw or in the form of tomato sauce or paste several times each week is a delicious way to protect your cardiovascular system. Another study has shown women with the highest intake of lycopene-rich tomato based foods had a significantly reduced risk of heart disease. There are so many studies about us I could go on and on, but bottom line is – eat me. Have a big glass of tomato juice every morning to keep healthy – plus I taste really good. What a great way to start your day. We are here to help keep you healthy. Have a great day!

By Kathryn Hartwell Canadians obtain more of their vitamins from tomatoes than from any other vegetable. One ounce of tomato puree has twice the vitamin C and 20 percent more beta carotene than one ounce of fresh tomato. To peel tomatoes easily, place them in boiling water and remove from heat, allow to stand for one minute then plunge them into cold water. Page 44

Combine mayonnaise, Parmesan cheese and minced garlic and spread over the layer of tomatoes. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 – 45 minutes or until tomatoes are cooked. Doesn’t get easier than that!

Tomatoes will keep longer if you store them stem down. Tomatoes should ever be left to ripen in direct sunlight, as they will lose most of their vitamin C.

QUICK BROILED TOMATOES.

2 Medium tomatoes Dijon mustard Salt to taste Fresh ground pepper to taste Cayenne pepper – to taste 3 tablespoons melted butter ¼ Cups seasoned fine dry bread crumbs ¼ Cup grated Parmesan cheese Cut tomatoes in half; spread cut side with mustard and sprinkle with a little salt, pepper and cayenne pepper to taste. Combine melted butter, bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese. Spoon crumb mixture over the top of tomato halves. Place under the broiler and broil until crumbs are browned and tomatoes are tender. Doesn’t get any easier than that!

Canadians eat approximately 24 pounds of tomatoes per person, per year. If you are expecting a frost and have tomatoes on the vine, pull them up by the roots and hang them upside down in a cool basement until the fruit ripens.

SAUERKRAUT This winter as I sat in the house thinking about the cold weather and grandparents, I started thinking about how they always made sauerkraut. Then I ran across a study showing infectious gastrointestinal disorder are amongst the biggest risks to our military troops who are overseas. Every month, about 30% get infectious diarrhea. Those who experience just one incident, had six times the risk of subsequent functional diarrhea, and four times the risk of irritiable bowel syndrome. As many as 20% of these patients have conditions that persisted for 5 years or longer after returning home. It is not hard to understand the high incidents of this problem, considering the stress these soldiers are under and “less than sanitary” conditions they are exposed to. What is hard to understand is the way these men and women are being treated. Typical treatment focuses on the use of antibiotics to wipe out the infected bacteria, then patients are switched to overthe-counter diarrhea medicine and bulking agents, when the problem persists. I don’t have cost figures, but I am certain that adding a daily probiotic supplement to their regimen, would be an extremely cost-effective method to prevent any problems. The fact that probiotics aren’t used following every round of antibiotics, is absurd! Slippery elm, is a herb that can help heal a damaged bowel wall, or drink several ounces of aloe vera gel on an empty stomach, three or four times a day. One of the best healers for ulcerations is cabbage juice. It takes about two pounds of cabbage to roughly get 1 quart of fresh juice, which should be consumed each day. After 11 days, most gastric and peptic ulcers should be cured. Do not heat the juice, as it destroys the anti-ulcer factor. I think cabbage is an overlooked gem. Both the juice and fermented cabbage (sauerkraut), are loaded with beneficial bacteria. It can be made very easily for just pennies a serving. You may not have the time to make the sauerkraut, so therefore, take a probiotic supplement every single day. Whey is an effective prebiotic, because of the sugar that it contains (that is one more reason to take a whey protein shake). Another thing that is receiving attention is kiwi fruit. Studies from Hong Kong show that eating kiwi fruit decrease constipation by improving bowel transit time. This fruit contains enzymes that aid indigestion, and improve bowel mobility. Kiwi fruit maintains the enzyme activity, while packing the prebiotics into a much more convenient form. At this rate, we are looking at a huge problem for the pharmaceutical point of view, so get started on something natural. Don’t forget the sauerkraut! This information comes from a health newsletter called Alternatives by Dr. David G. Williams. Contact Marg (403) 901-0160 for further information. Page 46

How Your Skin Tans . . .

Skin is the largest organ in the human body. It protects the body from harmful pollutants found in air, water and other things people come in contact with every day. The top layer, or epidermis, is the one that produces a tan. About 5 percent of the skin cells in the epidermis are special cells called melanocytes, which lie on the bottom of the epidermis. Melanocytes are pigment cells that produce melanin, the protein that turns brown and gives your skin its tan. Every person has roughly the same number of melanocytes, but your melanocytes will produce only a certain amount of melanin based on your heredity, which is why people have different skin colors. You need three things to produce a tan: UVA, UVB and oxygen. The process starts when UVB shines on the skin, which stimulates the melanocytes to produce melanin. UVA shines on the skin, meets the melanin that has been produced and causes it to expand and create an umbrellalike shield of protection around your skin cells. This shield of melanin provides a natural SPF to your skin cells and protection from overexposure. Melanin is naturally pink, but oxygen combined with UVA causes the melanin to oxidize which turns it brown. Your skin gets oxygen from the blood stream which is why good circulation is important to your tan. Skin cells in the epidermis are constantly reproducing and pushing older cells upward to the surface of your skin, where they are sloughed away. Your tan will fade over time if you stop tanning as the new cells will not be shielded by oxidized melanin. Sunlight and indoor tanning equipment both emit UVA and UVB light. Tanning salon sunbeds are designed to replicate the UVA and UVB, produced by the sun, in carefully controlled combinations. This allows trained tanning professionals to control your exposure time to minimize the risk of sunburn. Your first visit to a professional tanning salon should include a series of questions that will assist in determining an appropriate schedule to achieve that tan you desire. This should include: a skin type analysis to assess your sensitivity to sunlight; a discussion of previous sun experience; any history of sunburn; and a determination that you are not taking any medications or supplements or using any cosmetics or perfumes that may increase your sensitivity to UV light. Developing a good, long-lasting tan can take time. Don’t be impatient and try to rush the process. Remember the “golden rule of smart tanning” is - Don’t Ever Sunburn. When your skin burns, blood vessels swell or burst, which means your skin has to work to repair this damage. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Vitamin D included FREE with every tan session When this happens the tanning process stops until your skin has repaired itself and the result will actually slow down the tanning process. It is important to have good communication with your tanning professional at each visit, so the exposure schedule can be adjusted, if necessary, to give you the best tan possible while minimizing your risk of sunburn. The sum of research conducted to date indicates that repeated overexposure and sunburning are the primary sun-related factors responsible for an increased risk of permanent skin damage. This is why the prevention of sunburn and overexposure is so important. Moderate tanning, for individuals who can develop a tan, is the smartest way to maximize the potential benefits of sun exposure while minimizing the potential risks associated with either too much or too little sunlight. Sunburn prevention - not sun avoidance - is the best and most natural approach for everyone, whether you are 17 or seventy. Indoor tanning provides a responsible and controlled alternative to sunlight.

Beauty - in projection and perceiving - is 99.9% attitude. ~Grey Livingston

Unfortunately, women tend to skip putting on foundation, yet it is truly the key to looking flawless. Foundation is the “base layer” and it helps makeup last longer and colours such as blush, look truer. To find your right colour, you should swipe a small sample of the foundation onto your skin, usually onto the lower cheek area of the skin and continue on to your throat. If it blends in and the colour does not stand out, you have the correct foundation colour to use on your skin colour to use on your skin. When applying foundation, put small dabs of it onto your forehead, nose, chin and cheekbones. Now blend outward to help it disappear into your skin.

FOR THE BEST COVERAGE

Women love to be able to hide under-eye circles or blemishes and they should use a concealer. When using concealers, use SMALL amounts, as it is extremely concentrated. Apply it over your foundation to maintain a natural look. To get even better results, try two concealers. One should be a shade lighter than your foundation to downplay dark, bluetoned, under-eye circles, which will make the skin appear brighter. The other concealer should match your foundation colour, to help hide reddish blemishes or broken capillaries. Apply concealer to the inner-eye corners first, by the tear ducts, where circles appear to be darker, and “feather” it outward.

TO BRIGHTEN

Use a luminizer, which comes in a liquid or powder form. Luminizers are made with opalescent, pearl-like particles that give skin a sheer finish with a subtle, sexy sheen. You should always choose a shade closest to your skin tone. White and pink luminizers complement women with fair skin, while bronze or gold luminizers suit women with medium to deep coloured skin. As always, remember, a “little” goes a long way. To apply luminizers, use your fingertip, dab a pea-size drop onto your brow bones, then along the tops of your cheekbones, and then at the innermost corners of your eyes. To get a “barely-there” radiance, make sure you blend well!

FOR TOUCH-UPS

To keep foundation in place longer, use face powder, which blots away excess oil. Use a loose powder, which offers an airy, light finish, or use your favourite compact powder and use a brush to sweep it on. Apply face powders along your T-zone, under your eyes, and across your lids (which will help give eyeshadow colours to stay on longer). Always choose a shade of face powder that will match your skin. If you are in doubt, go a touch darker. If you have any questions or wish to have a “free 1 hour skin care/color consultation”, please feel free to call me at (403) 934-9638. As always, I am open to ideas as to what you would like to see in my articles on skin care or color, so send me an email and I will be happy to look at that .... shirra.mkcanada@gmail.com. March! March is a long snowy month here in Alberta. Fortunately we are home to Balzac Billy, the only groundhog in North America to predict an early spring. Lucky us. Calculating 6 weeks from the beginning of February means we do not have long to wait. If you are anything like me, this is a tremendous relief. I find winter in general difficult to get through. Though I supplement with Vitamin D it only marginally alleviates my desire to crawl into a cave like our native wildlife, and awaken in April when it is time to eat. I know I am not alone. I hear an echo of this sentiment from our bootcamp participants nearly every day. What I know and what they now know is that while we are waiting for the warmth to join our sunny days, Exercise cures the blues and that cure is at our feet... literally. I started writing this article about March. If you look in the dictionary March is a verb (not a long cold month). It means to “walk with deliberation”. Further, the thesaurus elaborates that March is also synonymous with “advance, boot, forge ahead, go on, hoof it, journey, pound the pavement, step out” and a host of others. So I take that as a sign to dust off the with Armand Pinel, RMT runners and get moving. Studies have shown that the best natural cure for stress and bad moods is exercise. HEALTHY SOLUTIONS When our vision begins to go…what do we do? It is inevitable for all of us that as we age, our ability to see the world will ultimately diminish over time. When we feel weak, we exercise and ensure our body has enough protein to build and repair muscle. When we lack energy, we ensure that we get lots of rest, and fill our body with healthy vitamins and minerals. Many factors contribute to failing eye sight like the aging process, diabetes, high blood pressure, and poor nutrition. But many do not realize that with just a few modest lifestyle changes, many of the most common eye ailments can be almost totally avoidable like night blindness, cataracts, and glaucoma. There are a few key nutrients which will help keep our eyes strong and young for many years to come: Lutien will strengthen the core of the eye, the macula, and help prevent degeneration from the inside, out. Antioxidants like Billberry and Grapeseed help protect the optic nerves, improve night vision, strengthen the capillaries which bring nutrients to the eye, and prevent cataracts and Glaucoma. Other key supplements which can benefit the overall health of the eye are Selenium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. Many of today’s well known “super-berries” like Acai, and Goji, are rich in many of these nutrients as well, and have been found to be some of the most antioxidant rich foods on the planet. A strong and healthy set of eyes will improve the quality of life for many years to come! Courtesy of Sangster's Health Centres in Marlborough Mall, Calgary. Prequalifying for a Mortgage by: Spencer Mason

This is one of the most important and time saving steps in the entire process for you and your buyers agent. Here is a hypothetical example of why: I had a client named Jane. Jane and I met to discuss her search criteria and one of the questions that I asked her when setting up her search is, “what is your price range.” Jane told me that $250,000 was her max. I set her up on an automated search, we identified some homes that she was interested in and went out looking at them. It took a few weeks, but eventually Jane and I found her Dream Home and we put in an offer. The listing agent asked me for a prequalification letter and I asked Jane if she had spoken to a lender yet. She told me no, but soon went into her bank to get prequalified. Shortly after that I received a phone call from a very distraught Jane who informed me that she only qualified for a $150,000 loan. Let me stop the example here and explain what you have most likely figured out by now. First, Jane could not afford her Dream Home. Second as her agent, I should have covered this up front and have now wasted a month of my time, but most importantly, I’ve wasted a month of her time. To make matters worse, after adjusting her search and looking at properties $100,000 less, what do you think Jane’s reactions to those properties will be? You guessed it, none of them compare to her Dream Home in a much Strathmore higher price range; all this because a simple step was missed in the beginning. Thankfully this scenario is made up but it could be very real. This situation can work in reverse as well. Jane Across from High School on Brent Blvd. could have been looking at $150,000 homes because it sound1100 sq ft. 2 Bedrooms. ed like a good number. When going out to look she was not 1 bath. Changes Are Looming ~ Jason Eldridge of Unisource Mortgage. On February 16, federal Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, announced there will be changes forthcoming to the mortgage industry primarily to deter Canadians from speculating in the housing market and overextending themselves financially given the amount of consumer debt that already exists. While these changes won’t take effect until April 19 of this year, the federal government feels taking this proactive approach will assist Canadians in avoiding the same fate as those involved in the Sub Prime disaster south of the border. With that being said, the finance minister announced three major changes to our industry rules to help reduce this possibility. For all Canadians wishing to purchase a house either as their principal residence or as a revenue property, the applicants will have to qualify based on a 5 year fixed rate, regardless if they are wishing to take a shorter term or not. While that could make qualifying for a mortgage more challenging for those clients that have lower incomes, the banks and financial institutions are still able to offer amortizations of up to 35 years to help keep the payments as low as possible. For current homeowners wishing to use their existing equity for such things as consolidating debt, making a major purpose, or perhaps using the money for some kind of an investment, they will only be allowed to borrow up to 90 percent of the value of their home(currently 95%). Given the recent drop in home values, this rule has been put in place to try and ensure that Canadian homeowners maintain a positive equity position even during economic down turns. Finally, for those clients wishing to either get into the rental property market or expand their investment property portfolio, you will now require a minimum down payment of 20% of the purchase price of the home. Until the 19th of April, you may still purchase a revenue property with as little as 5% down. This rule has been put into place to help reduce real estate speculation and flipping properties given the historically low interest rates that are currently being offered. With the mortgage industry continuously evolving, contacting a mortgage broker for the latest rules and regulations, will allow them to properly assist you in arranging a mortgage based your personal situation and goals. Thinking about selling? call for a FREE in-home evaluation. No obligation. Viewing Possible Dream Homes by: Spencer Mason

This is one of the most fun steps for many of my clients and for me as an agent as well. I recommend viewing no more than five or six listings at a time. At this point you should have narrowed your search results down to a top ten or fifteen so you will be able to see them all in a few trips out. Often times it can be difficult to keep things straight so here are some pointers I have developed that have great success for my clients: 1.Your agent should provide you with a listing sheet for each property you look at. Organize these listing sheets in the order that you view the homes. 2. Take lots of notes. Do not depend on photos because if you are viewing occupied homes the current residents may not be comfortable with you taking pictures of their belongings (and I believe this could be a liability should that home be robbed etc.). 3. Establish a clear winner for each day out. In other words, when you find a home that you really like a lot make that home your Top Choice of the Day. From then on, you only have to keep two properties in mind, your “Top Choice of the Day” and the one you are currently viewing. If the one you are viewing is not as good as your Top Choice then forget about it and move on to the next one. If the one you are viewing is much nicer than your Top Choice, make it your new top choice and forget about the other one. It is okay to have a Top Choice and a runner-up for the day, but try hard to really decide which one or two homes out of each tour is the best. Do this each time you go out until you have viewed all of the potential candidates. After that, you should ask your agent to do what I refer to as, a Greatest Hits Tour. This is a day that you go out and look at all of the top choices from previous tours and view them for a second time, back-to-back. From there you may need to come back a third time for the top choice or two and then, it’s time to make an offer! www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Finding a Loan Officer by: Spencer Mason

Prequalifying is free and your agent should have a few referrals of loan officers that they have worked well within the past. If you do not already have a loan officer that you are working with, I highly recommend using one of your agent’s referrals. The reason is because your agent does this for a living and the loan officers that she or he recommends most likely people that they have found through, no doubt, countless bad experiences with loan officers that did not get the job done in a satisfactory way. Just like a good buyer’s agent it is very important to find a loan officer that understands the time

time sensitive nature of Real Estate and can deliver on that requirement. By choosing a loan officer randomly you are taking a shot in the dark that this person, who will be integral part in the largest purchase of your life, is in fact someone who will be prompt and accurate. WATCH ME DO IT ~ by Kait au Lait It’s so nice to see the sun. I’m sitting in my kitchen nook, my feet on the window sill, writing with the sun on my face. If I closed my eyes, I’d never know it was still winter. The weather has been cooperating with my plans as of late. I’ve been getting more active; in fact, I’ve gotten back onto the calorie counting and fitness tracking. In total, since I started losing weight, I’ve lost roughly 68 pounds. Since really re-focusing myself since December, I’ve lost 13 pounds and 13 inches of fat – mainly around my stomach and hips (which is the really bad fat). A lot of what I’m doing is at the gym; however, I’ve also incorporated walking into my weekly fitness routine – even if I do make it to the gym. It’s good for my family and our dog, she LOVES “puppywalks”. It’s also really good for loosening up my tight muscles after a heavy weight workout. I’ve enjoyed a couple of bitterly cold walks this past week (with some blowing snow), but for the most part, I’ve enjoyed some sunshine or even mild evening weather – minimal wind! I started participating in an Olympic challenge at my gym. The idea is to eat 8 or more servings of fruit and veggies per day, work out at least 450 minutes within 10 days (of the Olympics), drink 8 glasses of water, get more than 6 hours of rest per night, focus on myself for 15 minutes or more a day and also manage stress. So far, I’ve managed to achieve every single item on the list per day. Each day I bring my tracking sheet to the gym for validation, I receive a “gold star” for each box that’s been filled in. Who doesn’t love a gold star?! I haven’t been given that type of recognition since I was about five! So far, I have a chart LOADED with stickers – this means that at the end of 10 days, I will be entered to win some pretty awesome Olympic stuff. I’m fairly proud in that not many others are focusing on the challenge as much as I have. (One thing people really don’t know about me is that I’m highly competitive. But shhhh. Don’t tell anyone. It’s a secret.) I’m always interested in sharing what worked for me and what didn’t. If you want some tips and cheats, drop me an email: kaitaulait@ gmail.com and I’ll be happy to send you some ideas that could help you achieve your goals. Believe it or not though, everything they say is true. It’s all based on diet and fitness! There’s nothing magical about what I do, and in fact, I’ve had to conform a busy corporate job, a full time family and other extra curricular activities around my fitness and meals. I haven’t had a hamburger in 3 months. (sigh) But it’s worth it …. I promise! So, what’s my goal in all of this? Well, outside of the benefit of being healthy; my goal is pretty much vanity. I don’t much care about the number behind my weight, but rather how it looks, and how I feel. At my largest, I was a 16/18 and my vanity goal is to be a size 9. Is it possible? Entirely. Will I do it? Just watch me…. Page 58

Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity. ~ Bill Gates If you mess up,it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them. ~ Bill Gates Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. ~ Bill Gates

Lessons for High School Students Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time. Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life

Attracting and Retaining Talent in a Multigenerational Workforce Comments on this workshop... “A sense of reasoning behind generational behaviours.” “The relevance, the honesty, the intelligence, the humour. This inside into today’s youth and today’s market. The light bulb went on as I listened.

Nine Words Used by Women (1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up. (2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house. (3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine. (4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don’t Do It! (5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.) (6) That’s Okay This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That’s okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake. (7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you’re welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says ‘Thanks a lot’ - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say ‘you’re welcome’ . that will bring on a ‘whatever’). (8) Whatever: Is a woman’s way of saying..Go to Hell (9) Don’t worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking ‘What’s wrong?’ For the woman’s response refer to # 3. Page 62
