Our readers are the best – we get lots of feedback, phone calls, emails, everything. We got a call that we cut off the article “4 Bizarre Business Ideas that Made Millionaires” last month. So here you go, the Monks who Sell Over 2.5 Million Print Cartridges:
COLDWELL INSURANCE
The monks who sell over 2.5 million in printer cartridge Father Bernard McCoy is CEO of LaserMonks.com, an Internet retailer that sells discounted printer cartridges and other office supplies. Customers include individuals and churches, along with giants such as Morgan Stanley (Research) and the U.S. Forest Service. It's a lucrative business. Sales have risen from $2,000 in 2002, the company's first full year of operation, to around $2.5 million in 2005. The idea for LaserMonks. com came to Father McCoy one day when his printer ran out of ink. He shopped around for a new ink cartridge but couldn't find one that was reasonably priced. In the beginning, LaserMonks.com consisted of a few monks sitting around with black powder and empty plastic cartridges, filling a few orders a day. Today the monks say they have served more than 50,000 customers, and they process 200 to 300 daily orders for a broad range of school and office supplies.

MOTHER’S ORIGINAL POPCORN BALL RECIPE
In the good old days many, many years ago when we used to go “Trick or Treating”, many of the treats we received were actually homemade – like I said, the “good old days”. We would get homemade popcorn balls and I remember helping mom make them every single year. We would make at least 150 of them – can you believe that? They were the most popular Halloween treat in the whole neighbourhood and all of the kids used to take them to school for the Halloween party. Boy, you will never see those days again! But you can still make homemade Halloween treats just to share with your friends and family. This gives you just another excuse to eat a few yourself since you only make these once a year, right? That’s my way of looking at it, anyhow! So I am going to share, first and foremost, my mother’s original popcorn ball recipe. It really is quite easy, just a little time consuming.
7 quarts popped popcorn 1 cup sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1/4 cup water 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Place popcorn in a large baking pan; mom would use her gigantic roaster. In a thick heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, water and salt. Cook over medium heat until a candy thermometer reads 235° (soft-ball stage). Remove from the heat. Add the butter, vanilla and stir until butter is melted. Immediately pour over popcorn and stir

until evenly coated. When mixture is cool enough to handle, quickly shape into 3-in. balls, dipping hands in cold water to prevent sticking. This will make about 20 balls. Your hands will get red and your arms will get sore but when you take that first bite of your own homemade popcorn balls, you might not want to wait until Halloween every year to make these – they are incredibly delicious. Now our neighbour down the street, not to be outdone, used to make her famous “Caramel Covered Apples,” which were not quite as good for you as the popcorn balls, hehe! But some found them almost as delectable.
CARAMEL COVERED APPLES 12 crisp apples 1⅓ cup dark corn syrup 1⅓ cup granulated sugar 1⅓ cup light brown sugar 1⅓ cup heavy cream ¼ tsp salt 3 tbsp butter ¾ tsp vanilla extract
Line a baking pan with a generously oiled sheet of parchment paper. Push a candy apple stick into the core of each apple. Combine the syrup, sugars, heavy cream, and salt in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Simmer until the mixture reaches 270°F – about 15 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in the butter and vanilla. Let cool for 6 to 8 minutes, until caramel thickens to a toffee-like consistency. Dip and gently swirl the apples into the caramel and place on the prepared baking sheet. Let cool completely.
Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Meyers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask. Shatner initially didn’t know the mask was in his likeness, but when he found out years later, he said he was honoured. The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from turnips. Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” In fact, wiccan were highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats, on Halloween night. It sometimes presents itself with related phobias, such as phasmophobia (the fear of ghosts), wiccaphobia (the fear of witchcraft), and nyctophobia (the fear of darkness) Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

How to have an AWESOME Spooky Halloween-ish party for the un-crafty penny pinchers Not that there are really any secrets in my world of over-sharing and self deprecating nature, but I suppose one could say that there are some things I opt out of talking about in such a public forum. The fact that I cannot, do not, and hate to craft is not one of them. I mean, I REALLY hate it. Martha Stewart would be ashamed, but I’d still laugh in her face if she asked me to make macramé pine cones or some other ridiculous project. It makes my skin crawl. I suppose it also doesn’t help that I am TERRIBLE at every single thing I have tried. Which isn’t much… but still! Terrible! Some people say that I can write, I can play just about any instrument you hand to me, and about a bajillion years ago in a past life, I was once a singer - but when it comes to using my hands for anything other than picking my nose and wielding a pencil, I fail.
our decorations came from one of those, which saves a load of cash, because some party decorations don’t come cheap.
Oh well! We can’t all be good at everything! Thing is, once you have kids, whether you like it or not, the day will come when you HAVE to craft. You have to. There’s no getting around it. Personally, I think I did a pretty good job of avoiding glue, scissors and construction paper - and then along came birthdays. There’s REALLY no getting around that crap! Due to my deep-seeded loathing of booger and poo-filled cesspools that are fast food play places and warehouses full of bouncy castles that DON’T LET PARENTS PARTICIPATE, we have parties at home. This means that all of the work to make the place party-ish is on me. Derp. Dumb move on my part. If people are going to come to my house for a party, I want it to be the BEST PARTY EVER!!! Yes, in all caps and with three exclamation points. I’m that kinda serious about this party business. I go ALL OUT. I have hand-made pirate t-shirts and bandanas. I have made cupcakes that look like Mater. I have made bandanas for every party goer. I have even combined two different themes into one perfectly (cowboys and Mickey Mouse). Everyone always asks how to do the things I do, and for recipes for the things I bake - so this year, the “Ghosts, Ghouls, & Zombies Birthday Bash” I’m telling y’all my secrets!
For the rest? Check your local thrift stores. We scored two motion activated Halloween decorations - a zombie that pops out of a casket and a snack bowl that has a hand that pops out at anyone trying to grab some yummies - for under $10 total! Baking is where I am strongest, though. I like to keep people talking for the entire next year and to look forward to what I’ll be whipping up! This year I made: Chocolate chip bones: They are shaped into bones by a cookie pan I got from Target, and the mix is just my favourite chocolate chip cookie recipe, but I’m sure you could use pre-made and have just as good of a result! The label I drew myself- I cut the cardboard from a brownie mix box!
These things could work for a Halloween party, costume party, any party where you need a delicious baked good. Bake and craft away, peoples - ’cause I’m DONE for the next year! In order to deck out your house in all kinds of creepies, crawlies, and spookies, head to your nearest dollar type store (there are many!). Seriously! You would not BELIEVE the goodies they have there for a buck in the months before during and even a bit after Halloween season. Nearly all of

I can’t forget to mention the Jell-O shaped like brains!
Peanut Butter Oreo Brownie “cupcakes”: A lot of people asked me if I piped the skulls and tombstones myself. PSH, NO! They are actually lollipops! Another dollar store score. All I did was cut the stick short enough to be used as an anchor and stuck them right on top. Super EASY and super cute!
And, of course, the BIG mama jamma! The cake! I went with a white chocolate bundt cake which we made to look like a grave
These were done with molds I snagged from Target - and they were cheap! The wrapped brain is from Dollar General (are we sensing a theme, here?). We also had dips that we dyed to look disgusting - one was zombie snot (spinach and artichoke) and the other was festering puss (French onion) it was fabulously disturbing. One thing we REALLY had fun with was a graveyard backdrop we snagged from a Halloween store for people to pose in front of, especially the zombie children. We weren’t satisfied with a picture of a graveyard, we had to make our own - with super cheapo headstones from the dollar store, and hanging ghosts from Party City (but you can get from any Halloween store, party store, or probably even chain stores like Wal-Mart and Target). And here are some more decorations picked up for a buck, just because!
This could honestly work with any cake mix, and will be delicious! For the topping, it’s just melted semi-sweet morsels, and melted white chocolate morsels dyed with food colouring to look like blood. The grave came from (of course) the dollar store! I couldn’t JUST feed people sweets, so I made some hors d’oeuvres and gave them new spooky names for added effect!
“Severed Arm Rolls” “Fried Fingers”
More seriously - anyone can throw a spooky party for SUPER cheap! We lucked out in that the boys both have September birthdays, right when Halloween stuff is just coming out so nothing is out of stock - so stock up now for the future! Holdin’ Holden Jenny Schoberl is a 30 year old professional musician turned stay-at-home. In order to keep some semblance of her adult-brain working, she began writing the popular Mommy Blog “Holdin’ Holden” in 2008, which receives over 1,000 unique hits per day. Jenny also enjoys entertaining her ever-growing Facebook Fan Page with over 51,000 fans who have dubbed her the “Howard Stern of Mommy Blogging”. Your pet will always be treated like a part of our family at the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore

We have recommendations, training information, and handouts that will help you and your pet. remove the object. Keep your horse calm, quiet, and in a safe environment until your veterinarian can arrive.
The horses’ foot is a complex structure. Under that hard-exterior hoof wall and sole there are many vital anatomical structures that make up the foot. The two important bones in the foot include the coffin bone and the navicular bone. There are three important synovial structures (structures filled with joint fluid) including the coffin joint, navicular bursa, and digital flexor tendon sheath. Structures that contain synovial or joint fluid become easily infected when exposed to bacteria. Finally, there are many important soft tissue structures including the deep digital flexor tendon sheath and the digital cushion. Penetrating injuries to the foot can damage these vital anatomical structures and create a deep-seated infection that can
PETS
ONE WRONG STEP Finding your horse lame can be a scary thing. Finding a nail in your horse’s foot can be even scarier. Read through these helpful tips so you can be prepared if you find that your horse has stepped on a nail.
When should you call the vet? If your horse steps on a nail, wire, scrap of metal, or any other object that has penetrated the bottom of the foot, your horse should be examined by a veterinarian immediately. If possible, DO NOT
be difficult to treat. It is important to have your horse examined to determine what structures may have been injured when the object penetrated the foot.
Why should you leave the object in the foot?
If the object your horse has stepped on is made of metal, your veterinarian will recommend taking radiographs (x-rays) of the hoof to try and determine the trajectory and depth that the object has penetrated the foot. This will help your veterinarian to determine what anatomical structures in the foot may have been injured in the process.
What is going to happen when the veterinarian arrives? The veterinarian will assess your horse and the situation to help you determine the best course of action. As mentioned above, radiographs of the foot may be recommended to help determine where the object has travelled. Your veterinarian may talk to you about other tests such as blood work, ultrasound, joint/tendon sheath tap, or an MRI of the foot to help identify the full extent of the injuries. The veterinarian will then remove

the object, likely with the aid of sedation and a nerve block to ensure your horse remains comfortable through the procedure. Depending on the extent of the injuries, your veterinarian may then discuss with you how to care for your horse at home or they may recommend you transport the horse to a hospital for more intensive care.
Is it really that big of a deal?
TOUCHED BY GRACE EQUINE
Many horses can step on a nail with minimal consequences. Maybe the nail does not even penetrate the sole, or maybe there is minimal damage that is easily managed with some minor veterinary intervention. For one horse and owner, the worst-case scenario unfolded. This owner came out to find her horse lame in the field; her mare could not even put her foot down. A veterinarian was contacted immediately and came out right away. When a nail was identified in the bottom of the foot, radiographs were taken. Unfortunately for this horse and owner, it was determined that the nail penetrated through the deep digital flexor tendon and infected the navicular bursa, a vital synovial structure in the foot. This horse could not be saved despite medical intervention and was humanely euthanized. We encourage you to regularly check your paddocks and pastures and remove any objects that could injure your horse’s feet. Regularly check your horses including picking up and cleaning out their feet. Contact your regular veterinarian or the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore at (403) 901-1800 if you have any questions or concerns regarding the health of your horses’ feet, or to schedule an emergency assessment if you find that your horse has stepped on a nail. Halloween Costumes.
Mom thinks it’s hilaaaarrioussss to buy costumes for me to wear. I have been a spider, a bunny, a hula dancer, a clown, Santa, a pumpkin, I’ve had a weird cat on my back, and, more recently, a teddy bear that was “soooo cute.” IT IS NOT CUTE. This cruelty is fueled by laughing and whatever is in their togo coffee mugs. And then, they make things worse by taking me out into PUBLIC where OTHER PEOPLE point and laugh. Oh, sure, laugh at the poor, humiliated, POORLY TREATED BLACK NINJA!! Laugh!! I dare you! And they do. “Ohh look at the walking spider! Ohhh look at the clown!” I hear it every Halloween night. Oh, and what’s even worse, there’s candy EVERYWHERE on the ground and mom won’t let me eat ANY OF IT!!!!! She pulls everything away from me, and gives me something gross like a treat. Ugh. I don’t want a treat. I want a Mars bar! Oooh or a Mr. Big. Those have peanuts in them. Yum.

About The Country
The summers are warm and the winters are moderate with some snow. May and June are the sunniest months. Weather changes quite frequently from cloudy to sunny and vice versa. If planning the visit during the summer, lightweight woolen or cotton clothes are recommended and jacket for spring and autumn. Always carry raincoat for that untimely showers. Incase of emergency call 999 or 112.
Culture
Most of the locals prefer speaking English here. Handshaking is customary. Irish are social people and are good at having a lively chat even with strangers. People live in great harmony and make great friends. Foreigners are welcomed with warmth and are made to feel at home. Guests are never sent back empty stomach as food is always served at any time of the day, to the guest. Most of the locals come from an agricultural background. Dinner is considered to be a meal of importance as it is the time when the whole family gets together and eat. One can dress casually when out on the streets except women are expected to dress formally at social gatherings and at fine restaurants. Smoking is banned in public places.
Shopping
Many towns organize flee markets at least once a week, which is worth checking out for cheap goods. Belfast is the shopping capital of Ireland; most of the stores open up early and close early too. On Thursdays, shops remain open till 8 in the night. Value Added Tax of almost 17% is charged, which can be reclaimed later. So if the visitors buy anything from the stores remember to check if the store operates the Retail Export Scheme, which would require the passport and filling of the Tax Free Shopping Form by the sales person. If the restaurant bill doesn’t includes any tax, leave behind a 10% tip to appreciate their service. Giving a tip to the porters and hair dressers is customary here.
Getting There
The national airline that operates here is Aer Lingus, which provides service from most of the major cities of the world. . There are many flights from UK to Ireland. The Dublin airport is located at 10 km away from the city. Services like taxis, air coach, buses transport passengers to their destination. The following are actual statements found on insurance forms
22. The telephone pole was approaching. I was attempting to swerve out of its way when it struck the front end. 23. I saw a slow moving, sad faced old gentlemen as he bounced off the hood of my car.
Car drivers attempted to summarize the details of an accident in the fewest words as possible. 1. The guy was all over the road. I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him. 2. I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way. 3. I had been driving for forty years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident. 4. The other car collided with mine without giving warning of its intentions. 5. I thought the window was down, but I found it was up when I put my head through it. 6. The indirect cause of the crash was the little guy in a small car with a big mouth. 7. An invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my car, and vanished. 8. A truck backed through my windshield and into my wife’s face. 9. A pedestrian hit me and went under my car. 10. Coming home, I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don’t have. 11. I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law, and headed over the embankment. 12. In an attempt to kill a fly, I drove into a telephone pole. 13. I had been shopping for plants all day and was on my way home. As I reached the intersection, a hedge sprang up, obscuring my vision and I did not see the other car. 14. As I approached the intersection, a sign suddenly appeared in a place where no stop sign had ever appeared before. I was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident. 15. I was on my way to the doctor with rear-end trouble when my universal joint gave way, causing me to crash. 16. I told the police I was not injured, but on removing my hat, found that I had a fractured skull. 17. To avoid hitting the bumper in front of me, I struck the pedestrian. 18. My car was legally parked as it backed into the other vehicle. 19. The pedestrian had no idea which way to run, so I ran over him. 20. I was thrown from my car as it left the road. I was later found in a ditch by some stray cows. 21. I was sure the old fellow would never make it to the other side of the road when I struck him.

Attention: We are now entering The Fall As one of my professors recently proclaimed – in agony, I might add – “the weather sure is making this September business miserable”. What can I say? I feel his pain. There is this brief window of time, around the time most kids head back to school, when our Pinterest feeds and other social media platforms begin to bombard us with every autumnal novelty imaginable: every twist of pumpkin pie known to man, howto’s on transitioning into sweater-weather, and the not-so-suspicious obsession with dead leaves. All those things that seem to give everyone the warm fuzzies before winter serves us a nice cold cup of reality. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the fall. It marks the end of showering two-to-three times a day from those sweltering hot days, comfort food is finally back in season, and the seasonal guidelines for fashion permit you to get away with not shaving your legs for a few months. Winter is not unlike this, but there is some-

thing really dissatisfying about gazing outside your university dorm – especially in recent weeks – as an impending dump of snow ruins the joy of running through piles of crunchy leaves. Um, excuse me, freak snow storm, but I believe the calendar says the first day of FALL is September 22nd? Can you just let us have our pumpkin spice lattes and mustard coloured cardigans in peace, please? But you see, after 19 years, you would think that I would be used to this utter lack of regard for my fall agenda. I wake up each morning and wonder what unexpected precipitation will befall me that day and attempt to begin my morning routine: scouring my closet for a fashionable ensemble while sending mercy prayers to the weather gods that they may permit me to NOT embody the essence of “snow-besity”. But there is one thing that has me really anticipating the fall: it is the beginning of turkey season. I would like to note that this season has varying significance for people. For gym teachers, it seems, this means it is “Turkey Burn” season: an annual event of extra running, more push-ups, and the evoking of instant regret in people, like myself, who achieved eating their own weight in stuffing in less than two hours. In spite of this, the season also marks a perpetual state of “Turkey Burn” denial when I follow the scent trail of Thanksgiving dinner all the way back to my parents’ house.

the dinner as tradition specific to my family. Things like Brussel sprouts, egg salad, and what we like to call “pink salad”. But that is the key: tradition. Thanksgiving in its physical form can be a very different experience depending on who you ask. I truly believe that Thanksgiving in its symbolic sense is almost a sacred event: the reunion of family and friends all wrapped up in a very nostalgic package. That being said, I am not convinced that the warm-fuzzy feelings and seemingly universal markers of autumn are the essence of fall. It is not the mashed potatoes and gravy at dinner, nor is it from turtlenecks and knitted sweaters. They are the memories and emotions that tear us away from our lives of racing from one place to the next, crossing “t’s” and dotting “i’s”, and fuel us with an inextricable drive “home”. Whether that means being in the company of friends, eating good food, or literally leading you back to your parents’ house, it’s a good thing, and it is worth preserving. While I probably won’t be thankful for the freak blizzard we might get before Halloween or the inevitable weight gain, I know I will be thankful for the blessing of good food, and of course, good company to share it with. Sabrina Kooistra
For as long as I can remember, this one-day event is an occasion for the season’s bounty. We have got the staples (mashed potatoes and gravy, turkey, and stuffing), as well as a few side dishes that really distinguish facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

ange is a symbol of strength and endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest and autumn. Black is typically a symbol of death and darkness and acts as a reminder that Halloween once was a festival that marked the boundaries between life and death. Harry Houdini (1874-1926) was one of the most famous and mysterious magicians who ever lived. Strangely enough, he died in 1926 on Halloween night as a result of appendicitis brought on by three stomach punches. Fifty percent of kids prefer to receive chocolate candy for Halloween, compared with 24% who prefer non-chocolate candy and 10% who preferred gum. The owl is a popular Halloween image. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear an owl's call meant someone was about to die. According to Irish legend, Jack O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who, because he tricked the devil several times, was forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell. He was condemned to wander the Earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths. The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with an 836lb pumpkin. Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year. The first known mention of trick-or-treating in print in North America occurred in 1927 in Blackie, Alberta, Canada. Cats have a prominent place in Halloween folklore and décor. “Halloween” is short for “Hallows’ Eve” or “Hallows’ Evening,” which was the evening before All Hallows’ (sanctified or holy) Day or Hallowmas on November 1. In an effort to convert pagans, the Christian church decided that Hallowmas or All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2) should assimilate sacred pagan holidays that fell on or around October 31. Black and orange are typically associated with Halloween. OrQUALITY WORK, PERFORMED BY CERTIFIED TECHNICIANS.
According to tradition, if a person wears his or her clothes inside out and then walks backwards on Halloween, he or she will see a witch at midnight. During the pre-Halloween celebration of Samhain, bonfires were lit to ensure the sun would return after the long, hard winter. Often Druid priests would throw the bones of cattle into the flames and, hence, “bone fire” became “bonfire.” Dressing up as ghouls and other spooks originated from the ancient Celtic tradition of townspeople disguising themselves as demons and spirits. The Celts believed that disguising themselves this way would allow them to escape the notice of the real spirits wandering the streets during Samhain. Halloween celebrations in Hong Kong are known as Yue Lan or the “Festival of the Hungry Ghosts” during which fires are lit and food and gifts are offered to placate potentially angry ghosts who might be looking for revenge. In many countries, such as France and Australia, Halloween is seen as an unwanted and overly commercial American influence. Children are more than twice as likely to be killed in a pedestrian/car accident on Halloween than on any other night. Both Salem, Massachusetts, and Anoka, Minnesota, are the self-proclaimed Halloween capitals of the world. Boston, Massachusetts, holds the record for the most Jack O’Lanterns lit at once (30,128). “What do you get if you divide the circumference of a jack-o’lantern by its diameter? Pumpkin π.” - Comedian John Evans The Village Halloween parade in New York City is the largest Halloween parade in the United States. The parade includes 50,000 participants and draws over 2 million spectators.

THE HISTORY OF VEHICLES Over the years, I have owned many, many vehicles. My first car was a 1967 Chevy Malibu. I have also owned a 1976 Trans Am, a Camaro Z28 and a 1999 Jaguar XJ8. What can I say, I like fast cars! Now I drive my Big White Hemi Dodge Ram Truck.
Can you believe that the Benz Patent-Motorwagen is believed to be the first modern automobile? It was built in 1886 by German inventor Carl Benz. In August 1888, Carl Benz's wife, Bertha Benz, became the first person to drive a car over a long distance. Without telling her husband, she drove one of their Benz Patent-Motorwagen’s along with her two eldest sons from a town called Mannheim in southern Germany to Pforzheim. Automobile trips before this were usually short drives; she wanted to prove the automobile they had invented was a useful contraption that the general public could use. Bertha Benz's road trip was a pioneering drive and a key event in the technical development of the car. Covering 106 km (66 miles) each way, she did the round trip in two days, solving numerous problems on the way. When the brakes needed repairing, she invented brake lining. She used a hatpin to clean a blocked fuel pipe and insulated a wire with a garter. She located fuel at the city pharmacy in Wiesloch (hailed as the first fuel station in the world) and on her return home made other suggestions, such as the need of another gear for climbing hills. As automobiles became more popular, a need arose to manufacture affordable cars on a large-scale basis. Ransom Olds in
1902 debuted a production-line manufacturing system at his Oldsmobile factory in Michigan, USA. The Henry Ford's Model T car, introduced in 1908, is often regarded as the most famous of all early automobiles. It was the first car to become publically affordable, especially after Ford massively improved the production-line manufacturing system. In 1914, Ford created a production-line system that focused on synchronization, precision, and specialization. Ford's cars came off the line much faster than previous methods (from 12.5 man-hours down to just 1.5), which increased productivity, yet used less manpower. By assigning each worker a specified area rather than allowing them to roam about, injuries were dramatically reduced. Now, have you heard that Google has developed a driverless car? The vehicles look cute but hardly impact-resistant, and they have a top speed of only 25 miles per hour. Google still has significant work to do before its software can handle all the situations a human driver can. “There’s going to be an enormous market for small autonomous vehicles,” says Gary Silberg, an auto industry analyst at the consulting firm KPMG. He cites city centers, airports, campuses, and amusement parks as places where vehicles, much like those Google is just starting to test could fit in. Google said that the new design will be unleashed on the roads of the company’s hometown of Mountain View, California, this summer. Eventually, up to 100 vehicles will roam the town’s suburban streets. These cars are expected to be available commercially around the year 2020. Can you imagine seeing a car driving down the street empty? That would be just too weird and it sounds like it really is going to happen! What is this world coming to? Just give them another 20 years and we will have flying cars – it could happen! Drive safe out there and may something wonderful happen for you today! facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

City of Chestermere News October Mayor's Message: 5 Things about Council’s First Year in Office It's almost been one year since the election, and as your newly elected Council, we knew we had a big job ahead of us. We understood that progress needed to be made on major issues and were eager to tackle the challenge of digging into the details of what that meant.
WELCOME to the Digital Section of the Magazine For the next 5 pages, you can click on the ads and have an interactive experience with the magazine
As I look back at the past 12 months, here are a few things that stand out: 1. New Direction: After we took our oaths of office, we wanted to be clear on exactly what our priorities would be for the next four years, so one of the first things we did was set a Strategic Plan with the priorities you gave us during the election. This plan lays out the detailed goals (and measures of success) for what we plan to pursue and continues to guide our decisions. If you want to know what we plan to do as a Council during this term, we encourage you to find out where we are headed by reading the plan on the City's website at www.chestermere.ca/stratplan. 2. CUI: We knew that you wanted normalcy for our utility rates. In August, after a thorough review, we announced that we are taking action and exploring options for CUI's future. The results of the report we've commissioned through KPMG and McMillan LLP will be presented on October 22, and we invite you to attend. In the meantime, we have directed CUI to continue to deliver regular services without disruption. We have also appointed all members of Council to the CUI Board. We will continue to share news about the future of CUI, but I encourage you to sign up for email or text message news alerts at www.chestermere.ca/news so you can be the first to know. 3. Webster: The Webster property consists of 101 acres the City purchased to develop into a light industrial park. After an indepth review, Council decided that it wasn't in our municipality's best interest to lead this project as the private sector has more expertise and resources in this kind of development. We are currently looking to sell the property and will continue to explore this and additional means of increasing our non-residential tax base.

4. Improved Communication: We know that you want to be heard by your elected officials and we've been trying new ways to connect with you. We've held several 'Coffee with Council' meetings, we’ve made the Mayor's office more accessible (please drop by), hosted more

Results of that engagement will be presented soon, and we value all the comments and suggestions that residents provided. Follow that project at www.chestermere. ca/budget. 5. New CAO: The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) is Council’s only employee and has the job of leading the entire City Administration and staff. We know that leadership is crucial to helping us achieve our goals and this was one of our priorities. Council hired Bernie Morton this summer and he is already working hard to help our organization serve you better. We are confident that he has the right blend of experience to lead Chestermere in the direction we've set out.

All in all, it's been a full year, but we feel that we've now set our foundation on many key items. In the months to come, we're looking forward to making some greater strides to take Chestermere in the direction residents have set out for us, and are highlighted in our Strategic Plan. Personally, I will be representing Chestermere at the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board as we determine how our regional neighbours will be working together in the future in areas such as land use and infrastructure. Finally, we will continue to find ways to improve our services to you whether that is by providing some outdoor rinks or new ways to connect with the community. We are also anxiously awaiting results of the Amazing Chestermere roundtable discussion. Thank you for your confidence in us. We look forward to continuing to serve you. Sincerely, Mayor Marshall Chalmers P.S. One of the projects we just started is a detailed look into the future of seniors’ housing. I invite you to participate in the survey (available online, at City Hall and the Library) and join us at a Seniors Housing Roundtable on October 29. OLD FASHIONED TURKEY BRINE INGREDIENTS: 2 cups Kosher Salt – not table salt – the stuff you use for pickling 3 tbsp Poultry Seasoning 3 tbsp Onion Powder 1 tbsp Black Pepper 4 quarts Vegetable Broth 2 quarts Water 3 cups Cranberry Juice
Chestermere
$20 Off Your Registration Fee. New students only, one coupon per family expires Dec 31/18.
Put everything in a big pot – boil for 20 minutes and cool. Put turkey into cooled brine and store in your refrigerator for 12 – 16 hours. Take out, rinse with cool water, pat dry and prepare as usual. Very Important: do not use salt in your stuffing, seasoning or gravy – the turkey already has enough from the brine.
Me: Go get dressed, sweetheart. It’s almost time to leave! Child: Ok, mommy! Narrator: But, you see, it wasn’t “okay,” for the child actually had no intention of getting ready until his mother finally lost her mind and resembled some type of demented psychopath.
Now here is a recipe in which you can use your cooler instead of your refrigerator – which is very helpful because at Thanksgiving in my house the refrigerator is full of so many other goodies.
APPLE-ISHOUS TURKEY BRINE INGREDIENTS: 2 quarts apple juice 1-gallon cold water 1 cup Kosher salt 6 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 5 pounds ice Line a cooler with a large food safe bag. Combine all the ingredients and stir until the salt is dissolved and add the garlic. Put in the turkey breast-side down and add enough water to submerge. Pour 5 pounds ice over turkey. Seal the bag and close the cooler. Marinate for 12 to 16 hours. Take out, rinse with cool water, pat dry and prepare as usual. Brine turkeys cook 20-30 minutes faster and make sure you take out the giblets from inside the turkey before you Brine. Have the most terrific, pleasurable and relishing Thanksgiving Dinner ever!

I was just reading an article about the different Thanksgiving traditions people have from all around the world and was surprized to read that more than a few people eat pie in the morning for Thanksgiving. Now that is a tradition I could sink my teeth into. Truthfully I cannot even remember the last time I even considered making a pie, it is one of those things I never thought myself capable of making because I have found making that light flaky crust pretty much an impossibility. So I have just never attempted it – cake is way easier. Now I find out that there are many, many people out there who would not even think about thanksgiving without their freshly baked pie!! Seriously the stuffing and the turkey and all the other trimmings is just about enough work for me, but who knows the day may come somewhere down the road when I wake up and think to myself “perhaps I will make a pecan pie this morning” who knows it could happen! So as a good cheer to those of you who want to make a beautiful Thanksgiving breakfast pie I thought I would share a few of the most delicious extra-ordinary pie recipes I could find. This first one almost make the whole idea plausible.

MISO PASTE
One of my favourite parts of going to a Japanese restaurant, besides the sushi, is starting my meal with a nice hot bowl of miso soup. I happened to be in the grocery store the other day and noticed a nice big container of miso paste and was overjoyed, but after buying the largest container available, I soon learned that most recipes call for a couple tablespoons, at most. I had more miso than I knew what to do with, but I refused to let it get lost in the depths of the refrigerator. Instead, I went on a mission to find ways (both obvious and totally unexpected) to incorporate miso paste into everyday meals.
5 Everyday Ways to Use Miso Paste 1. Salad Dressing
Salad has never tasted so good! Add depth of flavor to your dressing or vinaigrette by whisking in a small spoonful of miso paste.
2. Roasted Vegetables
Give roasted vegetables an unexpected, and completely delicious twist by tossing them with some miso paste before putting them in the oven.
3. Marinade
Miso is such a great addition to marinades. You can use it with meat, fish, or vegetables, and this umami-rich paste creates a marinade that's well seasoned, deeply flavorful and totally irresistible.
4. Miso Butter
I don 't know why people say such hurtful things, like, "Hey let' s go for a walk" or, "Here, try this kale. "

A simple pan sauce has a wonderful way of making homecooked meat feel restaurant-worthy, while being amazingly easy to make. Add even richer flavor to your next pan sauce by whisking in a small spoonful of miso paste.

5. Pan Sauce
Miso is actually made from soy beans. Soy miso is a very good source of manganese and copper as well as a good source of zinc (all three are important mineral antioxidants). It is also a very good source of the mineral phosphorus, as well as a good source of protein and dietary fibre. In addition to these conventional nutrients, soy miso is also an important source of phytonutrient antioxidants including phenolic acids like ferulic, coumaric, syringic, vanillic, and kojic acid. EASY FITNESS TIPS
1. Drink it up.
Water is a natural appetite suppressant. It helps to keep you feeling full before and during eating. Water helps to flush the body, whereas a dehydrated system will retain the water it gets through foods, sodas and coffee. Water also hydrates the skin to keep you fresh and glowing. Keep a bottle in your cup holder, at your desk or in your tote.
2. I’ll have it on the side.
When ordering or preparing a salad, get the dressing on the side. As you eat, dip your fork into the dressing before taking a bite. This easy step can cut up to 500 calories while maintaining the taste.
3. 50 paces.
Wear a pedometer. You can use the general rule that 2000 steps is one mile and walking a mile burns 100 calories. Being able to keep an eye on the numbers will motivate you to push yourself a little further each day.
4. Take a stand. Instead of falling onto the couch the
moment you get home, stand at the counter to read the mail. “No matter how still you may think that you are standing, you’re still in some form of motion. You incorporate more balance and engage your core muscles more than when you are sitting.” Standing alone also burns nearly twice as many calories as sitting.
5. Move your feet, Cinderella. Is it a pret-
ty day? Give the car an extra wash. It will shine and you’ll burn calories. Feel better about everyday chores – simple tasks such as vacuuming, mopping the floor and grocery shopping are all burning calories. Keep your abdominals engaged and try to complete the chores together so that your heart rate elevates and stays at a higher level. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

First, pick your perfect bird – there are lots of choices out there. If you prefer a traditional fresh or frozen bird, pick the healthiest-looking one in the weight range you need. And, remember, fresh may not necessarily be better than frozen; frozen turkeys are snap-frozen just after butchering. Figure on 1 to 1 1/2 pounds of turkey per person and add a few pounds for bones. Pre-salting is the key to a juicy bird. Remove the giblets from the turkey and refrigerate them for later use. Pat the turkey dry using paper towels. Sprinkle two tablespoons of kosher salt and one teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper liberally all over the turkey, spreading a little in the cavity and being sure to season the back, the breasts, and the meaty thighs. If you've never pre-salted before, this may look like too much salt, but it's not. As the turkey sits in the refrigerator, the salt will gently permeate the meat, improving the water holding ability of the muscle cells so that, when cooked, the meat stays juicy yet does not become overly salty. Arrange the turkey on a wire rack over a rimmed baking sheet, and refrigerate uncovered (this dries the skin, which helps it turn crisp during roasting) for one to two days.

around the whole bird so that it will get crispy all over. And the vegetables add great flavour to the gravy. Chances are, the Thanksgivings of your childhood featured a stuffing cooked right in the cavity of the turkey. Go ahead and use your family recipe, but we suggest you cook the stuffing in a separate pan. Cooking the stuffing in the turkey can provide fertile ground for the growth of harmful bacteria. In addition, a stuffed turkey will take longer to cook, which could result in drier white meat. Instead, loosely fill the turkey with aromatics such as onions and herbs, and cook the stuffing separately. Remove the turkey from the refrigerator about two hours before roasting to take the chill off; this also helps it cook more evenly. Before putting it in the oven, make sure the skin of the turkey is as dry as possible, then rub it all over with butter or oil. For even moister meat, place pats of butter under the skin. Heat the oven to 450°F. Tuck the wings behind the neck, and tie the tips of the drumsticks together with kitchen string. Arrange the turkey breast-side up on a rack in a sturdy roasting pan. Slide the turkey into the oven, immediately lowering the heat to 350°F. The first hint that the turkey is ready will be the tantalizing aroma that fills the kitchen; you can count on its cooking for about 13 minutes per pound. To be sure, pierce the meaty part of a thigh with a sharp knife, and check that the juices run mostly clear with only a trace of pink—don't wait for them to become completely clear, a sign that the turkey is overdone. To double check, insert an instant-read thermometer into the thigh, careful not to hit bone; it should read 170 degrees. When the turkey is done, grab both sides of the roasting rack with oven mitts to lift and tilt the turkey, and let the juices pour from the cavity into the pan. Set the turkey aside, tenting it very loosely with foil, to rest for at least 30 minutes while you make your gravy and put the finishing touches on all your side dishes. It is at this point in my house when I find my children hovering around the turkey looking for a nibble of crispy skin; can you blame them!? However you cook your turkey, you know it is going to be absolutely perfectly wonderful.

as coming from Turkey, including Turkish rugs (Persian rugs), Turkey flour (Indian flour) and Turkey bags (carpet bags from Hungary). The second theory is that Europeans already enjoyed eating guineafowl, a bird from Africa that looks sorta-kinda like a wild turkey. Guineafowl were also sold by Turkish merchants. So, when Europeans began colonizing America and ran into this native wild turkey, they may have decided to use the name they thought best matched the bird's appearance. Either way, this American bird got its name due to associations with other spots on the globe, and that trend continued with its naming in other countries. In Russia and Poland, the turkey's name translates to "bird of India," while Arabian countries call it "Indian rooster." So, what do they call a turkey in Turkey then? "Hindi," as a shorthand for India.
FACTS ABOUT
TURKEY
1. The turkey is almost certainly named for Turkey. There are at least two potential theories for how the turkey got its name, and both involve the country Turkey and a nasty habit of the British people of that era. The first theory suggests that since the birds were originally sold by merchants by way of Constantinople (now Istanbul), the British referred to it as "Turkey coq" even though the bird is actually native to North America and Mexico. At the time, the British referred to just about anything that originated from the East
2. Turkeys can be pretty aggressive, especially during mating season. Of course, the reason why a turkey wouldn't think twice about attacking a red coat is because male turkeys work very hard to impress females. So, attacking a much bigger animal — say, a human being — would probably woo the hen of their dreams. Turkeys have attacked cars, mail carriers and even their own reflections.
3. Wild and domestic turkeys are the same species. Despite having different names, domestic and wild turkeys are still the species, Meleagris gallopavo. This is because, genetically speaking, the birds are basically the same. The similarities pretty much end there, however. According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Native Americans, the Mayans and the Aztec had more or less domesticated the bird by the time Europeans showed up. One of the key differences between the two turkeys today is that domestic turkeys have been bred to have white feathers whereas wild turkeys need darker feathers Continued on page 33 facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

One Visit: Crowns at the Dentist! What is a crown?
A crown is a restoration that fits over a tooth and is needed in situations when the tooth fractures, cracks or quite extensively decayed. The following picture show cases the procedure. A CEREC machine is a Chair side Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or Ceramic Reconstruction. It is a dental restoration product that allows a dentist to produce an indirect ceramic dental restoration using a variety of computer assisted technologies, including 3D photography and CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/ Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology. With CEREC teeth can be restored in a single sitting with the patient, rather than the multiple sittings required with many other techniques. It uses high-quality ceramic material that matches the natural colour of teeth. Additionally, crowns, veneers, onlays, and inlays can be prepared as well using different types of ceramic materials.
How Does it Work?
Dentists use a special camera called Omnicam to take an accurate image of the damaged tooth. This image is then transferred and displayed on a computer screen which then the dentist uses Computer assisted design (CAD) at this step to design the restoration. Computer assisted mill (CAM) is the next step and automatically creates the patient's restoration while they wait. Once the restoration is complete the dentist bonds it to the surface of the old tooth. This whole process takes between one to two hours.
How can CEREC Help You?
With CEREC, a tooth-coloured restoration means there is no more silver fillings or discolouring, leaking, or even cracked fillings. With the crown, it is completely compatible with the tissue in the mouth, it is natural-looking and made with anti-abrasive and plaque resistant materials. With this machine, it takes one visit to complete this whole restoration process, this is because the dentist no longer needs to take impressions and send them to a lab, or create you a

FACTS ABOUT
TURKEY
for better camouflage in the wild. 4. Only males gobble. The turkey's distinct noise is only produced by males and is basically a way for the male to announce itself to potential mates while also, hopefully, scaring off other males. Birds of both sexes make plenty of other noises, including clucks, purrs and yelps. 5. If you still can't tell the female turkeys from the male turkeys, check their poop. You don't have to get up close and personal with turkeys to figure out their sex. Instead, just wait for the bird to do its business and then inspect the droppings. If the bird left behind straight, long J-shaped stool, it's a male. If the stool is a bit more of a spiral, it's a female. 6. Don't let their size and funny shape fool you: Wild turkeys are fast. On land or in the air, wild turkeys can keep pace with you just fine. These turkeys can reach speeds up to 25 mph on land and 55 mph in the air. They can only fly for about 100 yards, however. And we're only talking wild turkeys here; domesticated turkeys — the ones we raise to eat — are too heavy to fly, but they can still run... a little bit. 7. Flying comes in handy because wild turkeys roost in trees. You're way more likely to see wild turkeys on the ground, but at night these birds head for the branches of trees to roost. They dig their talons deep into a branch, making it difficult for them to be shaken loose by the wind. It's a good survival technique. 8. Never underestimate the snood. Both male and female turkeys have snoods, the red droopy thing on the top of their beaks. For the females, the snood is just a bit of extra flesh, but for males, it's an important part of the hierarchy. A 1997 study found that longer snoods were more attractive to females and that males with shorter snoods were more likely to defer to males with longer snoods. 9. This 'bird of courage' faced extinction. Wild turkeys were so popular that by the 1930s, it's estimated that only 30,000 individuals were living in the continental U.S. thanks to hunting and habitat destruction. The restoration of the wild turkey population took considerable time and resources funneled through the Turkey Federation to state wildlife agencies. Birds would be shipped potentially thousands of miles and released into forest habitats, a method called trap-and-transfer. It took a quarter of a century, but the wild turkey population was roughly 7 million as of 2013. 10. The history of presidential pardons for turkeys is a little muddled. Pardoning a turkey has become White House tradition, but the start of that tradition is surprisingly poorly documented. Abraham Lincoln may have been the first president to spare a turkey due to his son pleading that the bird intended for Christmas dinner had as much a right to live as any other crea-
ture. John F. Kennedy sent back the bird supplied by the National Turkey Federation in 1963, remarking, "We'll just let this one grow." Richard Nixon began sending the turkey to a petting farm at some point during his administration. But it wasn't until George H.W. Bush's administration that the official pardoning ceremony started in 1989. Since then, presidents have pardoned one turkey from the dinner table each year, often with remarks about the spirit of Thanksgiving. (And, if you're Barack Obama pardoning turkeys, a whole lot of dad jokes.)

Hello all! Larry here.
Happy October. October is such a wonderful time.
Fall colours, cold crisp nights, warm sunny days, ducks and geese and swans flying overhead as they continue on their journey south. And of course, October is full of Thanksgiving activities. Did you know that Thanksgiving has been officially celebrated as an annual holiday in Canada since November 6, 1879? While the date varied by year and was not fixed, it was commonly the third Monday in October. In 1957 it was changed to the second Monday in October.
Ingredients
Dressing: • 6 slices bread (180 g), crusts included (See Tip) 6 • 2 tbsp soft margarine or butter 25 mL • 1 cup chopped mushrooms 250 mL • ½ cup each chopped celery and onion 125 mL • ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley 50 mL • 1 tsp dried tarragon 5 mL • ½ tsp paprika 2 mL • Pinch ground nutmeg and freshly ground pepper Pinch
It is a spectacular family holiday that tends to center around food. Roger was surfing the Canadian Diabetes Association Website today and found some great recipes. This Roast Turkey recipe looks absolutely amazing, and the other recipes they combine it with are Whole Wheat Biscuits, Wheat Berry and Apple Salad, and Tangy Green Asparagus. Feel free to visit the website for those recipes. www.diabetes.ca
Instructions
1. Prep: 20 minutes, Cook: 5 minutes for vegetables 2. Prepare bread crumbs in food processor or by hand. Enjoy your fall holiday and all the amazing food and family time that goes along with it. Remember to get your steps in, especially when you are eating more than usual. We look forward to catching up with you next month.
To Stuff and Roast Poultry
I prepared Thanksgiving dinner for guests from out of town. I cooked for many hours using recipes I’d found. But the turkey, I confess, was not a golden brown. I made a huge mistake and cooked it upside down.
1. Rinse and dry the cavity; stuff loosely with prepared dressing. Close opening by trussing with a large needle and string, or insert skewers and criss-cross the string. Cross legs and tie with string so legs are close to body. Turn wings back, tuck under bird and secure with skewers or string. 2. Place on rack in uncovered roasting pan, breast side up; insert

meat thermometer in thigh. Roast in 325º F (160º C) oven until thermometer reaches 185º F (85º C) or juices run clear. If breast starts to brown too much, cover with foil.
Roasting Chart

said the Coroner. "Second body: Scottish. 25. Won one thousand dollars on the slot machines, spent it all on Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Died of acute alcohol poisoning. Hence going out with a smile." The Detective asked, "What about the third body?"
Three male bodies arrive at the morgue with big smiles frozen on their lifeless faces.
"Ah," said the Coroner, "This is the most unusual one: Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, 45. Struck by lightning."
The detective calls the coroner to ask what happened to the men. "First body: French. 60. Died of Congestive Heart Failure while engaged in the act of making love. Hence the enormous smile",
"Why is he smiling then?" asked the Detective. "He thought someone was taking his picture."

Altogether Different
A little bit of everything Gaylene is a Strathmore resident that has trouble taking life seriously and can usually be found making inappropriate or sarcastic remarks around town much to the embarrassment of her family and friends. (of which she has both – honest!)
Under the B – One! As parents we do a lot of things for our children and not all of them enjoyable. For moms, it starts with child birth and just seems to get more painful and disgusting from there. I’m sure that I am not the only parent that has had to improvise a way to remove gold fisher cracker-infused vomit out of a car seat on the side of the road - in the dead of winter - on a dark night – while trying (and perhaps not successfully) to add to the mess due to a keen sympathetic response. Nor am I the only parent to have discovered evidence in a child’s room that the child is aspiring to be a young Alexander Fleming attempting to create penicillin from a kaleidoscope of coloured mold growing on the remains of what may have been a cheese sandwich from a meal long ago. Snotty noses tracking gelatinous goops of germs and dirty diapers – as parents we barely blink after the first hundred or so nose wipes and pampers changes. And let’s not fool ourselves. The tasks may change as the child gets older but there still those unpleasant tasks a parent needs to take on. Chaperoning junior high dances, carpooling a team of perspiration dripping teen aged boys back and forth to practice, helping you child to build a “working model” of the human digestive system or cleaning the car after carpooling your son’s water polo team. (Where ironically, you can find materials for both creating penicillin and the digestive system diorama.) There always seems to be a few unpleasant tasks associated with the job of parenting. My husband and I recently experienced a new one of these parental joys. Yes, my husband of twenty two years and I lost our bingo volunteer virginity and we did it at the Gray Eagle Casino. I love that my son loves water polo and I happily volunteer to ensure he and his buds can keep inflicting pain on each other in the name of sport but oh, by all that I hold dear, bingo volunteering is my idea of hell. Those of you that have done this will get where I am coming from, for the rest of you let me try to put it in words. Our shift started at four in the afternoon and so we left work early to ensure we are promptly on time. As the only newbies volunteering that night, we were the only ones who actually showed up at the appointed time. Everyone else had figured out that arrival around 4:45 was prompt enough. In the meantime, Les and I stood around trying to figure out why a bingo hall had a library and why one person had a life size Alf stuff toy sitting beside them. Once the

Strathmore, AB • Ph: 403-901-6392 rest of the volunteers arrived, Les and I were handed Wal-Mart inspired red vests (fits size small to 20 XL) and told we would be verifiers. This meant that the two of us would spend our entire 8 hour plus shift on opposite sized of the smoke filled auditorium. So much for a cheap date night. Although I must admit, as the night progressed and I increasingly inhaled more and more tobacco fumes (at least I think it was just tobacco) and my eyes turned from white to pink to red streaked to red, the love of my life began to look more and more attractive in his red Walmart vest. Yes, by 10 I was dreaming of him taking me home, by 11 I was plotting ideas on how we could leave together unnoticed, and by the midnight hour I was ready to grab him by the lapels of that red vest, and whisper into his ear, “Get me the hell out of here, I’m tired, my feet hurt, I wanna go home, I’m scared.” You see, the last bingo I attended was at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Castor where my school, Theresetta was putting on a bingo to raise money for the Passion Play production. (My oldest brother was cast as Jesus simply because he had a beard and not because of his Christ-like behaviour!) I think I was in grade three and I remember winning a loaf of zucchini bread. Once again, Catholic School did not prepare me for the reality of life – in this case the reality of bingo. Did you know that there are professional bingo players? They play bingo as a career. This was news to me and I was a career coach for many years. And did you know there are unspoken rules of etiquette for bingo? There are, but you don’t learn them until you’ve broken one – because there are unspoken rules. Apparently, chit-chat is frowned upon because you may not be able to hear Al, the professional bingo caller (another career profession I never thought of) call B–12 over the broadfacebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

cast system. Giggling when he calls Ooooo 69 is also frowned upon. And as for the bingo dabbers – don’t get me started. Let’s just say one woman had 17 different dabbers of differing colours that need to be precisely aligned (to the planets, the corner of the room or to Al the caller, I don’t know) but heaven help the volunteer that accidently bumped her table causing the dabbers to topple. I said I was sorry! Another woman, focused on both her electronic and paper bingo cards, would stroke and shake her dabber in a way that me blush much more than when Al called out Ooooo 69. (Thankfully by this time the smoke was so thick my husband couldn’t make out the blush on my face.) Yes, the bingo players were a diverse and motley crew as were the cast of volunteers to whom I am very thankful for as without them there would be no bingos to provide funding for all the wonderful clubs, teams and organizations that our children participate in, which undoubtedly would result in a fundraising activity even more unpleasant. And to the other parents that volunteer at Bingos “God bless you, each and every one, and can you tell me what to expect when I volunteer at the casino next month? – that wasn’t covered in Catholic school either.”
With all the autumn leaves fluttering to the ground, now is the time to make a great Thanksgiving Turkey Leaf arrangement for your table. This is a very pretty and colourful addition to your Thanksgiving decorations and a craft the whole family can help with.

What You'll Need
• 3 corks • Craft glue • Large pom-pom, any colour • Googly Eyes • Red and yellow felt • Scissors • Feathers • 2 bobby pins • Craft paper • Coloured pencil • Toothpick
What You'll Do
Glue together three corks to form a triangle. Glue large pompom to the top of one cork (for the head). Attach the googly eyes to the pom-pom. Cut a diamond shape from yellow felt (about 1/4"x1/2"), fold in half, and glue to head just under eyes, for beak. Cut three teardrops from red felt, about 1/2" long each, and glue under the head to the top edge of the cork, for wattle and caruncles. Glue feathers to the back of the two rear corks, as shown, and glue bobby pins underneath the front cork for feet. Write your guest's name on a fun craft-paper shape (we used a paper punch) and glue to a toothpick; stick into one of the corks. Originally published in the November 2009 issue of Parents magazine.

What You'll Do
Cut a rectangle of neon bright tissue paper, wide enough to wrap around the mason jar and two or three inches taller than the jar itself. Line the tissue paper up so that half an inch hangs over the bottom of the mason jar and an inch or two hangs over the top. Wrap the tissue paper around and glue it into place. Tuck the

I like the effect of t-shirt yarn because it’s quite thick and raised from the jar, giving a great 3D texture to this Halloween craft. Start by tying the yarn around the neck of your mummy jar, in line with the tissue paper seam (this will become the back of your Halloween jars.) Then simply wrap the yarn around and around the mason jar to create your mummy’s bandages. When you have wrapped all, you want to just snip and tie the t-shirt yarn off and tuck the end in out of sight. Lastly, finish off your spooky mason jar mummies by sticking on some googly eyes and attaching some plastic spiders, if you want to – just hook them around the yarn! These bright, colourful neon mason jar mummies are such a fun and spooky addition to your DIY Halloween decorations. Whether you fill them with Halloween candy or battery tea lights for glowing Mummy Mason Jar Luminaries, this mason jar craft is sure to be a hit!

DIY Project: Renovate Your Life
“Just like a coat of paint can completely change the look & feel of a room, a new perspective can completely change the look & feel of your life.” ~ Darlis Collinge I am pretty sure that a love for home improvement and Do-itYourself projects is genetic. My dad was a contractor and my mom, well she is an unstoppable Jill-of-All-Trades with the power tools (and over 100 screwdrivers!!) to prove it. She turns 70 this year and spent the summer renovating a shed behind our cabin to turn it into a guest house. I have the DIY bug and so does my daughter. While I have three grown sons, it always seems to be her and me working on projects like painting, laying flooring, putting in new vanities and installing shelving. We are always willing to try something new and are open to advice from those who have experience in areas that we do not. Yup, it seems that some people just are naturally drawn to take action and improve their home. It’s the same with life. Some people are just naturally drawn to take action and improve themselves. I happen to be one of those people and I absolutely love courses, classes and stimulating conversation that help me grow as a person. Every time I have a new “A HA”, it’s like a renovation in my life… out with the old and in with a new updated thought, attitude, perspective or piece of knowledge. Home renovation and life renovation are similar in other ways too. Let me use one of my first DIY projects from several years ago to explain. The plan was to simply take a day to remove the carpet in the bathroom and replace it with tile. And so I began and along the way, I discovered:
3. Gaining knowledge is ongoing – at some point in your DIY experience, you will need to learn how to do something new to accomplish your renovation goal (google the task, watch a video and then do it until you get it right) and a life reno project is the same. We read books and attend classes, we seek out mentors and guides, we have meaningful conversations, and we practice until our current reno project is complete. 4. The process is worth it – when you step back and see where you started and what has changed, there is a feeling of accomplishment and joy at the progress made. This is the same whether you just painted and redecorated your living room or realized that you have become a more compassionate and patient person. The end result is new, fresh and an improvement. While my mom has been my biggest inspiration for becoming a DIYer, my biggest inspiration for life renovations are the people who share their wisdom, knowledge and experiences with openness, honesty and vulnerability.
At WomenTalk, I am inspired to consider if there are renovations needed in my life. Do any attitudes need to be removed and replaced? Any behaviours needing repair? Any beliefs needing a new coat of paint? The stories of heroism, despair, joy, sadness, compassion, betrayal and celebration shared by the women every month are tools we can use to spark our own life renovations. What’s your next reno project?
“No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change, become a better version of yourself." ~ Madonna For more information about the monthly WOMEN TALK meeting in Strathmore, including how you may participate by attending or being a Talker, please visit www.WomenTalk.ca/ Strathmore.
1. Surprises are everywhere – you never know what you will uncover once you commit to looking beneath the surface. I found not one or two but THREE layers of carpet!!! In renovating my life, I have discovered old and unnecessary patterns of thinking hidden beneath my point of view. 2. One thing leads to another – once you start, unexpected new actions show up (like having to fix a VERY seriously rotten floor around the toilet that gave a clear view into the basement… yikes!). When we start making changes in our life, we often discover that our view changes and there are more things we need to do than we originally thought.

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family! After a fantastic summer spent in our riding of Bow River, I am back in Ottawa for the House of Commons’ fall sitting. Spending the summer in our riding was an incredible reminder of all we have to be thankful for. We live in a beautiful, dynamic region, with remarkable community spirit. That community spirit was on full display over the summer months, as many locations in Bow River held tremendous events and festivities.

Simple and Effective Ways to Protect Your Home from the Bad Guys
I had the honour of participating in parades, attending fairs and craft shows, enjoying fantastic community BBQ’s, and visiting with great people across the riding. These events were organized and staffed entirely by volunteers, and I am so grateful for their efforts. In the spring, I had the privilege of acknowledging many of the volunteers in our riding with certificates of recognition – and I’m happy to say that I received hundreds of great nominations. It’s hard to get away from busy lives to work for the benefit of our communities, but the results speak for themselves. Our charities benefit enormously from the hard work of volunteers, and they also ensure there is never a shortage of things to do for the whole family in our riding.
Whether you are a homeowner or a renter, securing a single family home can present some unique challenges.
I also got to spend a lot of time with farmers and ranchers in our riding over the summer. I am convinced we have some of the best producers in the world right here in Bow River. I remind Canadians from urban areas every chance I get that it is our hardworking, innovative farmers and ranchers that put the food on our plates. When you see a farmer, remember to thank them for the food we eat. With harvest just about done with, I hope all of you in the agriculture business get some much deserved rest.
The good news is that there are simple things you can do to secure your single family home and make yourself a less tempting target for the bad guys out there. You may not be able to stop the bad guys from being bad, but you can protect your own home and reduce your chances of a break-in or burglary. Here are some simple and inexpensive ways to secure your single family home and keep your family safer.
It really was a pleasure to speak with so many of you at these events over the summer. I greatly appreciated you sharing your thoughts on what’s happening in our riding and in our country. Please know that I will be bringing many of the concerns you raised to Parliament Hill as my opposition colleagues and I hold the government to account over the coming months. I can be reached in Ottawa at martin.shields@parl.gc.ca. If you live in a high-rise or apartment building, you may have a doorman to check visitors and keep your property safe. When you live in a single family home, you have to rely on yourself and your proactive approach to security to prevent burglaries and avoid theft.
Invest in a Quality Security System
Simply having a security system is one of the most effective ways to protect your home and your family. If you own your own home, you can purchase a traditional wired security system, complete with alarms at the doors, windows and other entry points. You can also add hard-wired security cameras that are remotely monitored by the company doing the installation. If your single family home is a rental, you can take advantage of the new style wireless security systems, which use a variety of techniques to keep your home safe and your The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

screen TV boxes and other evidence of a recent buying spree out at the curb. While you do need to dispose of those boxes, you should do so in a less obvious manner.
Burglars are savvy, and they have learned to look for the telltale signs of a security system when casing a neighbourhood. Simply having a security sign in the yard can be a good deterrent, and placing visible security cameras at the doors and windows could help even more.
Take a few minutes to break the TV box down, cutting it up and placing it in the trash or recyclable container instead of simply putting it out by the curb. If you are using a wall mount for your new flat-screen TV, invest in a security cable to keep it in place and make it a less tempting target should a burglar manage to access your home.
Keep Your Garage Door Secure
Your garage door is the largest door in your home, and for many single family homes it is also the least secure. Many homeowners painstakingly lock their front doors when they return home, but they leave their garage doors open to facilitate easy entrances and exits for family members. That same ease of entry can be an open invitation to a burglar, giving them a chance to score some very valuable items without your even knowing it. Just think about the valuables you probably keep in your garage - from your toolbox and power tools to the lawn mower and leaf blower. Then look at the property with the eyes of a burglar and consider how easy it would be to make off with those valuables while you are at home going about your business.
Get to Know Your Neighbours
There is safety in numbers, and getting to know the neighbours is one of the best ways to keep your home and family secure. Take the time to introduce yourself to the neighbour across the street and the family who lives in the home next door. Once you get to know one another, you and your neighbours can keep tabs on one another's homes and report signs of suspicious activity in the area. Whether you organize a formal neighbourhood watch or simply maintain a casual lookout for possible intruders, banding together can keep everyone who lives on your street safer and more secure. Neighbours should watch out for one another, and simply getting to know the people who live in the surrounding houses can keep you, and your single family home, a lot safer.
Keep Your Expensive Purchases to Yourself
If you have just purchased a big-screen TV, you are probably in a hurry to get it mounted and start watching it. Even so, you need to take care and protect that costly purchase from the bad guys.
Sometimes it seems like there is little we can do to protect ourselves from crime, but much of your security is within your control. From assessing the security of your single family home and making yourself a less tempting target to getting together with the neighbours, there are proactive steps you can take to keep your home safer and protect the things you own.
Many homeowners make the mistake of placing their big-

WHY ADVERTISE?
The key to any successful small business is advertising. You need to make your potential clients aware of your business and products. This is the KEY!
1. Advertise to Reach New Customers.
Your market changes constantly. New families in the area means new customers to reach. People earn more money, which changes their lifestyles and buying habits. The shopper who wouldn't consider your business a few years ago may be a prime customer now. Remember, 20% of families will move this year, 5 million people will be married and 4 million babies will be born*. Advertising on Facebook is no longer the “free, easy” way to advertise! Facebook hides your posts so that you have to pay for them to be seen. Not only that, but not everyone has Facebook! Try out different kinds of advertising – print (like in our magazine!), radio (the new Strathmore radio station!) and signage. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket – putting your name out there in more than one way is important!
2. Advertise Continuously.
Shoppers don't have the store loyalty they once did. You must advertise to keep pace with your competition. The National Retail Merchants Association states: “Mobility and non-loyalty are rampant. Stores must promote to get former customers to return and to seek new ones.” Furthermore, if a business only advertises one month, they may not reach every potential customer. Shoppers who don’t need a specific merchant one month may need it the following.
3. Advertise to Remain With Shoppers Through the Buying Process. Many people postpone buying decisions. They often go from store to store comparing prices, quality and service. Advertising must reach them steadily through the entire decision-making process. Your name must be fresh in their minds when they ultimately decide to buy.
4. Advertise Because Your Competition is Advertising.
There are only so many consumers in the market who are ready to buy at any one time. You'll need to advertise to keep regular

customers and to counterbalance the advertising of your competition. You must advertise to keep your share of customers or you will lose them to the more aggressive competitors.
5. Advertise Because it Pays Off Over a Long Period.
Advertising gives you a long-term advantage over competitors who cut back or cancel advertising. A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found advertisers who maintain or expand advertising over a five year period see their sales increase an average of 100%. Companies, which cut advertising, averaged sales decreases of 45%.
6. Advertise to Generate Store Traffic.
Continuous store traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of shoppers. The more people who come into the store, the more possibilities you have to make sales and sell additional merchandise. For every 100 items that shoppers plan to buy, they make 30 unanticipated "in the store" purchases, an NRMA survey shows.
7. Advertise to Make More Sales.
Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You'll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful.
8. Advertise Because There is Always Business to Generate.
Your doors are open. Salespeople are on the payroll. Even the slowest days produce sales. As long as you're in business, you have overhead to meet and new people to reach. Advertising can generate customers now and in the future.
9. Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image.
In a competitive market, rumours and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects misleading gossip, punctures "overstated" bad news. Advertising that is vigorous and positive can bring shoppers into the marketplace, regardless of the economy.
10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale.
When advertising and promotion are suddenly cut or cancelled, salespeople may become alarmed and demoralized. They may start false rumours in an honest belief that your business is in trouble. Positive advertising boosts morale. It gives your staff strong additional support. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Honeycomb shades are available in a single-cell design, as well as multiple cells which features a honeycomb within a honeycomb creating not just one pocket or air, but up to five pockets for maximum energy efficiency. For doors that need extra insulation, a vertical operating system is the ideal option. It is designed for these vertical applications and uses the same fabrics as your horizontal shades. You can use one shade to cover the entire expanse of a sliding door. Or, cover the door with a split stack shade, with each side of the shade operating independently. Custom window coverings are an investment. Ensure the company providing your window coverings also provide a lifetime warranty.

SLEEPING WITH BOB The guys were all at a deer camp. No one wanted to room with Bob because he snored so badly. They decided it wasn't fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they voted to take turns. The first guy slept with Bob and comes to breakfast the next morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? He said, " Bob snored so loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night."
"What this world needs is a few more rednecks Some people who ain't afraid to take a stand What this world needs is a little more respect For the Lord and the law and the working man We could use a little peace and satisfaction Some good people up front to take the lead A little less talk and a little more action And a few more rednecks is what we need." Charlie Daniels
The next night it was a different guy's turn. In the morning, same thing, hair all standing up, eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? You look awful! He said, 'Man, that Bob shakes the roof with his snoring. I watched him all night." The third night was Fred's turn. Fred was a tanned, older cowboy, a man's man. The next morning he came to breakfast bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. "Good morning!" he said. They couldn't believe it. They said, "Man, what happened?" He said, "Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Bob into bed, patted him on the butt, and kissed him good night. Bob sat up and watched me all night." With age comes wisdom. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Fall Selling Time
FOOTLOOSE PET GOOSE PICKED A FIGHT WITH A MOOSE CHEESE STIFF BREEZE WATCH OUT, THERE ARE TEN BEES
Canada has (technically) 4 seasons. We embrace the change of the weather as we gently (or not so gently) move from hot summer weather into the crispness of Fall. We pull on our favourite sweaters, cuddle on the couch with Pumpkin Spice Lattes and start to plan fall activities like kids’ hockey and ringette, Boy Scouts or Guides. All the stuff that Fall is made of... BUT how many of us plan the Fall Home Selling season?
What’s more painful than heartbreak? Losing a fish right by the boat.

As a Realtor®, I have conversations with people all the time asking if FALL is a good time to list their home... and the answer is YES! Many buyers are out looking for homes now before the snow is here to stay, so a savvy seller takes advantage of the potential opportunity.

Yes, selling in the Fall is a little different then in Springtime or summer... but it has its advantages, if you plan ahead. I have gathered some of my favourite Fall Selling Secrets... here are my top 5.

1. Clean up the yard... your whole yard. Get the rake out, prune the trees a bit, cut the grass one last time and put the garden to bed for the winter. In summer, the brightness and fullness of the summer plants really add cheer to a yard. But in Fall, we don’t have that luxury (though the green grass, evergreen trees, and the beautiful changing leaves look so good right now). A yard that is super tidy and trimmed shows your property at its BEST in Fall. And if weather permits, maybe keep your lawn chairs out staged by the firepit, with a bundle of wood. This gives the buyer an idea of coziness. A fire in the evening of a cool fall night is truly relaxing. Small details like water hoses and garden tools stored away neatly for the season give the buyer an impression that you care about your home. 2. Next, pull out your yard broom or power washer and get to work. The littlest of creatures need to be swept away. Have you ever walked around the exterior of your house and noticed all the little spider webs and dirty marks? Sweep or wash them away. And get the exterior windows washed up one last time, too. Dirty windows are a large turn off for buyers. 3. Now that the yard and exterior are organized and neatly trimmed up, add some Fall colour ...just a bit goes a long way. I love to add a large potted Mum or 2 at the front step. Many home owners will put a fall wreath on their door; you can bargain hunt at the dollar store or discount stores if the budget is tight or you are crafty, go for a walk on forest trail, bring your snippers and cut yourself some foliage. Then grab a large pot (discard from summer, possibly) and create a display for the
front door or back deck. As we move into October, I love to see a pile of gourds in a basket or several pumpkins – little sprinkles of fall colour add the brightness that you might be missing. When you are listed for sale, always consider BOTH the front and backyard in your plans. Another little tip – repeating a small display on the back deck reminds the buyer of the fond first impression they had as they walked up your front steps. It’s kind of like the bow on a gift or the “icing on the cake;” finishing details make ALL the difference. 4. The outside is ready, lets move indoors. The furnace and fireplace have probably not been turned on for months, so it’s time to get them cleaned and serviced before you need to turn them on. It’s a good maintenance tip for everyone, but especially for sellers. Be prepared. With an accepted offer, typically there is a home inspection. The inspector will take note of when the furnace was serviced last and a buyer will feel confident in seeing that the seller has maintained key items. If you have Central AC, maybe put the cover on it and tuck it in for winter. 5. Ahhhhhh, the smell of Fall baking - can anything beat it? Apple pie, Banana bread, cinnamon cookies... Fall flavours are so inviting. The comfort of smelling fall baking is simply magic! Having a plate of cookies out on the counter on a fall day makes buyers feel right at home If you need some ideas about what I’ve mentioned here, please reach out to one of the REPs Group. We love to share ideas.

Hello Newsy Neighbour readers! As Thanksgiving approaches, I think we should reflect on the original meaning of Thanksgiving. It was a celebration of the harvest and the culmination of a year’s hard work. This has been a tough year for many in our agricultural community. They faced a severe lack of moisture, extreme heat, and now we have unusually cold and wet conditions as they try to harvest. Those who put food on our tables take a leap of faith every year so please join with me in thanking them for the work they do and let’s wish them well in getting the crop off.

My thoughts about Thanksgiving were inspired by a tour with David McAllister, General Manager of the Western Irrigation District. I was invited out to Marguerite Watson’s farm to check out her low-pressure pivot system. Here is how it works: Low Pressure Pivots save 20 acre-feet of water per year per pivot. One acre-foot of irrigation rights is currently valued at $10,000. Low pressure pivots make more water available to expand irrigation and reduces costs to individual farmers. In dry years like this, irrigation is vital. Dave tells me that last year irrigation had a yield advantage of approximately 15 bushels/acre versus non-irrigated crops. This year, in some cases, it is approaching 40 bushels/acre due to the drought.
I would like to thank Marguerite Watson for letting us wade through her beautiful wheat field to see the low-pressure pivot set up. This remarkable lady just retired from Victim Services in Strathmore after 17 years of service! Thank you again for the invitation onto your beautiful farm and I hope you get some good drying weather so you can get the crop into the bin. I would also like to give a huge shout out to the folks at the Marigold Library System. We spent some time checking out the beautiful new location of the WID and Marigold joint headquarters. Two longtime institutions in Strathmore will save their users a lot of money by sharing space. Thank you to Laura Taylor and Lynne Thorimbert of Marigold and Rachel Dyck-Hughes and Carmen Erison for showing us around the Strathmore Public Library and spending some time with us. We ended up with a beautiful sunny day for our tour, so please check out our pictures on Facebook, care of Peter Tindall. We were also in Strathmore at the Value Drug Mart to meet with local folks. We had a wonderful time chatting with so many of you. Thank you for your time, as I know how precious it is. I was honoured to attend, sing at and speak at Women Talk Strathmore last week. I would like to thank Brigitte Lessard-Deyell for her incredible work advocating to bring women together to “share their inspiring stories, thoughts, experiences, and ideas”, Sheree Agerskov, who is bringing her own chapter to Langdon, Brenda-le Erfle Graff and Darlis-Keily Ireland for their amazing work. I was thrilled and humbled to be able to participate, and thank you also to fellow presenters Kathy Smith, and Rachel Ingram. I spoke about having a thick skin. We as women are 51% of the world’s population. We show up and participate in all sorts of leadership roles because we are cooperative, thoughtful and we are kind. Never let your kindness be equated to weakness. It is so easy to be mean and nasty. It is easy to react and to be offended. It is not easy to increase cooperation and respond with grace and common sense to The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

the subversive and negative and violent language that is hurled on social media (and especially in the political world) no matter what your gender. Society appreciates that women are solution oriented, and we embody democracy as we are able to wear many hats at one time. We are highly responsive, and we are tremendous negotiators looking to establish peace, creating powerful relationships and we will not be excluded. There will be people who will try and use your trials and tribulations against you, but we have to ask ourselves: What is our greater purpose, know it and then fight for it every day. I will always choose to treat people the way I want to be treated, and we as a society can choose to elevate and not destroy, unite and not divide, encourage and not disparage, and embody grace under pressure. I believe that this is what you expect from me as your representative in the Legislature. We as women encourage confidence, and we are perceived as more honest…isn’t that a beautiful thing to be perceived as? Now we have to own that hard-earned respect, and lead by example with a strong work ethic, and we will rise to the occasion as so many of you inspire me to do everyday through your own advocacy and leadership in your communities. Let’s continue as communities to expect responsive and transparent democracy. That takes courage and we must strengthen our resolve to be better and stand up for our communities. I must at this point talk about one woman who exemplifies community advocacy. Thank you to Chrissy Craig of the Langdon Community Association for your advocacy for a high school in Langdon. This community is rallying the forces get funding for their school and Chrissy inspires people because she is an active participant in getting things done. She does this with grace, kindness, common sense, and perseverance just like so many of the great volunteers and committees in Langdon. Entrepreneurs enjoy what they do and, more importantly, have a healthy relationship with the ups and downs that accompany being a business owner. We recognize when it is time to call a friend, colleague or mentor, put a support system in place or just take a break and re-assess. But when the support, coping skills and self-care practices aren’t working, can business owners open up about their spiralling emotions? Are entrepreneurs seeking help when the long hours, no regular pay cheque, trying to do it all, are contributing towards some form of mental illness?

Unfortunately, the answer would seem to be “no” as many struggle behind closed doors. Media coverage around this issue is increasing but more needs to be more done. Well-known entrepreneurs should be honest about their journey or risk becoming part of the problem. The whole “You go, girl (or male equivalent), just follow your passion!” is overly idealistic and risky especially for the uninitiated. We are transcending from a time when most people were employees to the age of self-employment, which of course holds many advantages for the economy. The contributions of small businesses are vast. However, there is no litmus test for who becomes an entrepreneur so many are not properly prepared for the road ahead.

Entrepreneurial success and mental well-being are so much more than just feasibility studies and business plans. Other factors need to be in place to help with the emotional ups and downs. When it comes to your mental health, relationships with friends and family is powerful. Most importantly, don't be afraid to ask for help--see a mental health professional if you are experiencing symptoms of significant anxiety, stress or have been consistently overwhelmed or depressed.
JASON ELDRIDGE Mortgage Specialist PFP, B.Admin Cell:
The root of entrepreneurial worry is usually around money. A clear financial plan is vital. How much do you need to start? How much of your own money can you afford to invest? Don't let friends and family invest as that can weigh heavily on you at 3am or if they do make sure it is not more than they can afford to lose. Are you going to use outside investors, a business bank or your own bank? If you cannot answer any of these questions, you are not ready to go forward on your business path.

A healthy lifestyle is not a cliché when it comes to the mental, spiritual & physical health of the business owner. Exercise, diet, and adequate sleep all help, as does cultivating an identity apart from your company. Volunteering, hobbies, travel – everything that maintains your sense of balance as a well-rounded person are just as important as the hours spent in your home office or brick & mortar business. Train your mental voice to be clear-sighted. Loss and failure will occur; steps taken in the name of business growth are governed by trial and error. You cannot be good at everything; hire, accept or ask for help. (If you cannot afford to pay for a needed service, look into possible ways to exchange services or products).
