UNIVERSAL LAWS
1. Law of Mechanical Repair - After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will begin to itch and you’ll have to pee. 2. Law of Gravity - Any tool, nut, bolt, screw, when dropped, will roll to the least accessible corner. 3. Law of Probability -The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act. 4. Law of Random Numbers - If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal and someone always answers. 5. Law of the Alibi - If you tell the boss you were late for work because you had a flat tire, the very next morning you will have a flat tire. 6. Variation Law - If you change grocery lines or traffic lanes, the one you were in will always move faster than the one you are in now (works every time). Continued on page 13

FROM THE PUBLISHERS By the time you are reading our July issue, my first little baby Aleesha will be married. Congratulations Aleesha and Todd! The wedding is next weekend so I cannot give you any details yet; those will be in the August issue. I just love this July issue - there are really some great stories and really funny jokes. Our first July issue in the summer of 2008 was a whopping 24 pages and the majority of the advertisers were Realtors – has that ever changed! We didn’t have all the interesting articles and columns we have now and as I sit and look through it, I find it incredible to see how far we have come, how we have grown and changed - this little magazine has taken on a life of its own! One small idea has now become a way of life for us and we hope we have in some small way helped not just our advertisers but brought a smile to the face of our loyal readers. We are truly grateful to all that have believed and supported us. As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Have the most amazing July and we will see you in August! By: Kathryn Hartwell

Because it is fun! Haven’t we all sat around the campfire and wished we could play the guitar or at least play it better than we do? Enrolling in weekly music lessons helps both children and adults alike achieve the necessary knowledge and skill needed to play a musical instrument. There are numerous benefits - besides being enjoyable! A sense of discipline, achievement, self confidence is built through reaching weekly goals and learning how to play a simple song. Many studies have found that learning how to play an instrument can improve a child’s spatial-temporal reasoning and contribute to better academic achievement. Music, Math and Language are connected! And, did we mention fun? Being able to play a favourite song be it on piano, voice, guitar, bass, drums or banjo and share it with family and friends is one of life’s most rewarding and simple joys. BODY PARTS – YOUR STOMACH
The stomach is a marvelous piece of biological engineering – exactly what is needed by the body to break down food with powerful acids while protecting the body. Within the narrow VIETNAMESE NOODLE HOUSE confines of the digestive system food is broken down and utiNOODLE - VERMICELLI - RICE lized in a very short time. The stomach secretes gastric acid, which contains hydrochloric acid, which dissolves any sort of VIETNAMESE SUBMARINE edible food. The lining of the stomach is quite an amazing thing. BUBBLE TEA The stomach protects itself with a vital layer of mucus, which is secreted by goblet cells in the outer layer of the stomach linDine In - Take Out ing – the mucosa – the outer layer of which is called the epithelium, and contains all the necessary glands of the stomach. The human stomach is a muscular, elastic, pear-shaped bag, lying crosswise in the abdominal cavity beneath the diaphragm. The Business Hours stomach is normally about 12” long and 6” wide (depending on Mon, Tues, Wed: 11AM - 8PM how much you ate). Food enters the stomach from the esophagus; the connection between the stomach and the esophagus is Thurs, Fri, Sat: 11AM - 9PM called the cardiac sphincter, which prevents food from passing Sunday : Closed back to the esophagus. HEART BURN is the sensation when 402 Merganser stomach juices seep through into the esophagus. Heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. Factors that contribute to heartburn Drive. W are pregnancy, smoking, eating large meals, being overweight CHESTERMERE, and wearing tight clothing around the waist. In Canada, about Alberta T1X 1K5 50% of the population experiences heartburn at least once a (Next to Gas Plus month. Some substances are absorbed through the lining of the Gas Station) stomach and one of these is Alcohol. About 20% of alcohol absorbs into the blood stream, through small blood vessels and the remaining 80% continues to the small intestine and is absorbed there into the blood stream and is metabolized by the liver. The liver can on an average metabolize about one standard drink in one hour. The liver cannot process alcohol, consumed in larger amounts and your blood becomes saturated until your liver can process the excess alcohol. Alcohol can damage the cells in the lining of the stomach and intestines, which can block the absorption and breakdown of nutrients in those organs, erode the stomach lining, ulcers and acid reflux. So when you are out camping, visiting or just partying – remember your marvelous piece of biological engineering and be nice to your stomach. By: Kathryn Hartwell – Remember: everything in moderation! INTERESTING STOMACH FACTS Once you are an adult, your stomach pretty much remains the same size -- unless you have surgery to intentionally make it smaller. Eating less won’t shrink your stomach, but it can help to reset your “appetite thermostat” so you won’t feel as hungry, and it may be easier to stick with your eating plan. No exercise can change the size of an organ, but it can help burn the layers of fat that can accumulate on the outside of your body. Plus it can help tighten the muscles in the abdomen, the area of the body lying just south of the diaphragm, that houses the stomach

Fats digest much slower than carbohydrates, and they remain in the stomach longer, which means we naturally feel full longer after eating a snack that contains at least some fat. When we are fatigued or stressed, eating right before bedtime can make digestion more difficult and may cause more gas, bloating, and heartburn. There is a ‘brain’ in the gut that helps to make sure that food is moved through the digestive system at the right pace, in the right amount. When we are fatigued -- like most of us are at the end of a busy day -- that ‘gut brain’ is fatigued as well.
PINEAPPLE FOR YOUR STOMACH – JULY 2010 The chosen body part this month is the stomach, so in conjunction with this body part I have included and article on the pineapple. Pineapple is very good for your stomach and contains Bromelin, which is a protein-digesting enzyme capable of breaking down proteins and releasing the amino acids that form them – facilitating digestion the same way as the stomach’s own pepsin. Pineapple can be eaten before your meal, particularly when the stomach is somehow weakened by the following conditions: Hypochlorhydria - is slow digestion and a sense of heaviness in the stomach. Gastric ptosis - is the stomach’s inability to empty itself. The pineapple must be eaten fresh – not canned. Obesity – Pineapple consumed before meals, reduces appetite and constitutes a good complement to weight-loss. It is also slightly diuretic. Sterility – Pineapple is one of the richest foods in manganese, a trace element involved in the formation of reproductive cells, both male and female. It is recommended for those suffering from sterility due to insufficient production of germinal cells (sperm in men and ova in women). Stomach Cancer – It has been shown that pineapple is a powerful inhibitor of the formation of nitrosamines. These carcinogenic substances form in the stomach as a chemical reaction between nitrites and certain proteins contained in foods. Nitrosamines are known to be one the leading causes of stomach cancer. Pineapple is ripe when the pulp yields to finger pressure. Its aroma is intense and the leaves are easily removed. The pineapple only ripens on the plant. Prematurely harvested fruit is acid tasting and lacks nutrition. By: Kathryn Hartwell www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Old fashioned Values, Ideas and Games
JULY FAMILY PAGE
I spent my younger years growing up in Pincher Creek and Stettler, two small towns in Alberta. I remember spending the warm summer evenings playing kick the can, hide and go seek, anti-anti-I-over and tag. During the day we would go on hikes, catch frogs, salamanders and other curious creatures at the pond, play dress-up and build forts wherever possible. We would spend a whole day dragging pieces of old wood and trees to construct the most amazing structures, considering what we had to work with. We would insist our parents allow us to sleep at the fort, then pack as much junk food into our packs as possible, with sleeping bags and pillows and trudge down the road to our evening adventure. I don’t think we ever slept an entire night in the fort, after the ghost stories and getting settled we would start to hear all the night noises and come up with all sorts of different excuses to go home. The outside lights were always on, and the front door, always open, and thinking we were clever would sneak down the hall to our nice warm beds. So for this months Family Page I thought I would give you ideas of how to spend those warm summer evenings (if we get any) and those lazy, boring days with some Old Fashioned Ideas.
What could be better than Old Fashioned Ice Cream? It is easier than you'd think to make and no preservatives - you can add any kind fruit to this recipe and make it your own. My grandmother had an old tattered black book where she would keep all her recipes; this is one of them. But, that just reminded me of the Dough Stretchers we would make in her garage in Beiseker. I’ve got to find that recipe too! By Kathryn Hartwell Page 16

OLD FASHIONED ICE CREAM DESSERT:
NO BAKE HONEYPEANUT-CHEERIOS SQUARES
6 cups of milk; 4 eggs, whites 1 cup sugar and yolks separated; 3/4 cup of sugar, 2 small teaspoons vanilla, 1 cup peanut butter 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, 6 cup regular Cheerios a little salt. 1 cup honey Heat milk. Mix egg yolks and 1 cup peanuts add sugar, mix cornstarch to sugar and egg, then add to hot Butter a 9 x 13-inch pan milk, then add salt and and set aside. flavouring, add beat egg whites last. In a large saucepan bring the Freeze. This makes sugar and honey to a boil but a freezer full
do not boil. Remove from heat. Stir in the peanut butter, peanuts and cereal. Press mixture into the prepared pan. Cut into squares. www.thenewsyneighbor.com
Here are a couple of fun games for kids, for those rainy days. MARBLE FUN Place two plastic cups (glass is too loud and may break) on a table exactly 6 inches apart. Put 10 marbles into one glass. Take 2 unsharpened pencils and hold them in your hand like chop sticks. Try to lift the marbles out of one cup and place them into the other by using just the pencil chopsticks! See how many you can move before dropping one. TIN FOIL BALL AND CUP Crumble up a piece of aluminum foil into a ball. Tie one end of a 30 inch long piece of string around the ball. Tie the other end of the string to a cup handle. You can use any cup that has a handle---don't use a nice one in case it breaks! A plastic cup with a handle works best. Hold the cup by the handle and swing it so that the ball goes into the air. Try to catch the ball in the cup. This isn't as easy as it may seem!
I hope I have given you and your family some great ideas as to how not only spend some special quality time together but also create valued treasures to keep forever. Have the most wonderful July – remember summer is short so enjoy each and every moment of it. www.thenewsyneighbor.com
If you use your imagination, you can create some incredible crafts with your children, old and young – crafts you will cherish for years to come. Here are just a few ideas.
LIGHT SWITCH COVERS The wooden switch covers work best for this. You can pick up all sorts of craft paint at the dollar store and just spray them with a protective coating when you are done. TILE PAINTING Use them in your garden, kitchen for hotplates or just as pretty decorations. There are all sorts of different tile shapes and colours at your local home building store. It certainly has me thinking; this is a really fun and creative way to spend some time with your kids, friends and relatives. Just make sure to spray them once you have finished your creation to save it forever! MAKE A WALKING STICK OR TOTEMPOLE Jump in your car and take a drive to a place where you might find a great piece of old tree to transform into a very special gift. The river valley in Carseland has lots of huge trees – I’m sure you would find your Lost Treasure there. Make sure you don’t cut a new tree – the wood must be old and sacred to make it very special. Then use your imagination – you can stain the wood or paint it. You can enjoy the outdoors for the day and spend the evening planning your creation. The Newsy Neighbor

Fire Pit Safety Tips by Marcella Costante
There is certainly nothing better than having an open air barbecue over an open fire at the same time as taking pleasure in a mid summer late afternoon as the warmness of the fire caresses your face. The trick to making this a certainty is to construct a durable and sturdy outside fire pit that will perform a number of tasks in addition to providing a comfortable and warm feeling to your terrace or back garden. The first thing you have to do is to decide on a spot for the pit. The pit is supposed to be within reach for maintenance work but beyond the reach playing kids and sufficiently far from the home in order to prevent any mishap. Best is to place the pit near the far corner of backyard with the intention that it deflects bugs away from food and guests without burning down the home. In addition be conscious of the position of lawn equipments or furniture in addition to trees and other vegetation. The open air fire pit is supposed to be easily evident from most part at any time of the day. Now that you have selected an area for your open air fire pit, you have to plan to construct the pit itself. Begin by taking into consideration the size of the pit. Think about the complete size of the pit together with the fire pit itself in addition to the materials that offer a safety edge. Get rid of any grass or combustible materials in that spot. The edge of the open air fire pit will be made up of four sides, three sides will be fortified with heat tempered stone bricks, and the fourth side will be open. Pile bricks of a reasonable size and breadth all along the three sides of the pit. The open side must face the guest seating area in order that it’ll be easy to maintain and will offer them comfort. The height of the walls is supposed to be at least three feet. This will maintain animals and small kids safe in addition offering a way to maintain the fire under better control. Fill up the empty space of the pit with bark chips. This will turn into the fundamentals of the firing up for the initial flames. The other thing to do is get the entire equipment needed for use with your open air fire pit. These consist of fire tongs with which to keep a check on the firewood and debris, a mode by which to begin the fire, a few burning charcoal or liquid fuel, and a pail for pouring water on the fire to douse it. A fire extinguisher is a must, should there be an emergency. If the fire pit is to be used for cooking, the kind of bricks you use in addition to the size of the pit will decide the size of the grill and how it is supposed to be laid across the pit. The tip here is to be ingenious, just take care that the grill is safe once it is operational. An open air fire pit will make a great addition to your terrace or back garden. Just be conscious of its position, safety measures, and fire regulations in your neighborhood. Whether it’s for barbecue or grilling marshmallows, a fire pit endows with years of pleasure and satisfaction for the entire family. Page 18

FUNNY CAMPING QUOTES The sign says fishing; how come there aren’t any fish here. Of COURSE I packed the tent poles!
It really doesn’t matter if we get there after dark; it’s an easy hike You should have been here last week ... the fish were really biting! That stretch of river isn’t that deep, you should be able to wade in. The black flies won’t be out yet for at least a couple more weeks! The ice sure LOOKS thick enough to skate on... No need for reservations. This place NEVER fills up. The “RUSTIC” cabins along the bay sound nice... I’m sure that’s not poison ivy Just one more hill to climb, it’s all-flat from There. I know the drought has a ban on open fires, but this is a campground, I’m sure we’ll be ok.
Who brought the bug repellent? I thought YOU packed the toilet paper! Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions... Honey, after this trip, you should really think about shaving your legs... you’ll be ok... it doesn’t look that bad... Shhhhh!! Did you all hear THAT?? I’m sure these mushrooms are edible...

What I like about camping is you can get really dirty. Either you’re all by yourself, so no one else sees you, or everyone you’re with is just as dirty as you are, so nobody cares. ~Anonymous Backpacking: An extended form of hiking in which people carry double the amount of gear they need for half the distance they planned to go in twice the time it should take. ~Author Unknown A lot of parents pack up their troubles and send them off to summer camp. ~Raymond Duncan The fire is the main comfort of the camp, whether in summer or winter, and is about as ample at one season as at another. It is as well for cheerfulness as for warmth and dryness. ~Henry David Thoreau

Dear Mom, Our scout master told us all write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and worried. We are OK. Only 1 of our tents and 2 sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Chad when it happened. Oh yes, please call Chad’s mother and tell her he is OK. He can’t write because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search & rescue jeeps. It was neat. We never would have found him in the dark if it hadn’t been for the lightning. Scoutmaster Webb got mad at Chad for going on a hike alone without telling anyone. Chad said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn’t hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas can will blow up? The wet wood still didn’t burn, but one of our tents did. Also some of our clothes. John is going to look weird until his hair grows back. We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Webb gets the car fixed. It wasn’t his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked OK when we left. Scoutmaster Webb said that a car that old you have to expect something to break down; that’s probably why he can’t get insurance on it. We think it’s a neat car. He doesn’t care if we get it dirty, and if it’s hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the tailgate. It gets pretty hot with 10 people in a car. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the highway patrolman stopped and talked to us. Scoutmaster Webb is a neat guy. Don’t worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Terry how to drive. But he only lets him drive on the mountain roads where there isn’t any traffic. All we ever see up there are logging trucks. This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out in the lake. Scoutmaster Webb wouldn’t let me because I can’t swim and Chad was afraid he would sink because of his cast, so he let us take the canoe across the lake. It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood. Scoutmaster Webb isn’t crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn’t even get mad about the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the car so we are trying not to cause him any trouble. Guess what? We’ve all passed our first aid merit badges. When Dave dove in the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works. Also Wade and I threw up. Scoutmaster Webb said it probably was just food poisoning from the leftover chicken. He said they got sick that way with the food they ate in prison. I’m so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster. He said he sure figured out how to get things done better while he was doing his time. I have to go now. We are going into town to mail our letters and buy bullets. Don’t worry about anything. We are fine. Love, Cole

Split dead limb into fragments and shave one fragment into slivers. Bandage left thumb. Chop other fragments into smaller fragments. Bandage left foot. Make a structure of slivers (including those embedded in the hand). Light match. Light match. Apply match to slivers, add wood fragments, and blow gently into base of flames. Apply burn ointment to nose. When fire is burning, collect more wood. When fire is burning well, add all remaining firewood. After thunderstorm has passed, repeat the above steps.
WATCH OUT FOR BEARS
The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter. They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge. Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear’s sensitive nose and it will run away. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.
CAMPING TIPS – JULY 2010
We love to camp and pack up our Trailer whenever possible. Since July is our camping issue I thought I would share a couple of great recipes for your kids to enjoy on your next trip. CALZONE SANDWICHES ~ Kids love this pizza RECIPE because by using just a few simple ingredients that are easy to bring on a camping trip, they can cook one of their favorite foods. If they are old enough to cook over hot coals, each child can make their own pizza. The only cooking tool needed for this recipe is a pie iron. When it’s cooked, it looks just like a calzone and tastes like pizza. White bread, Margarine, Mozzarella cheese, Pizza Sauce, Pepperoni Take one slice of bread and slather on pizza sauce, cheese, and other toppings. put the other slice of bread on top. Butter both sides of the “sandwich.” Place the buttered sandwich inside the pie iron and place it over the coals. Turn the pie iron often. When the pizza is ready, it will be nicely toasted on both sides Kid’s Easy Trail-Mix Balls ~ It’s best to make this recipe at home with your children before the camping trip, because the process of making these trail-mix balls can get very messy! The key to a successful trail-mix ball is choosing the right ingredients. You can pick healthy filler food, but the best tasting ones always come from loading it with lots of chocolate and nuts. Chex cereal, 1/4 cup raisins and dates, 1/4 cup coconut, 1 cup peanuts, 1/4 cup walnuts, 1/4 cup M&M’s, 1/2 cup chocolate chips, 1/4 cup honey, 1/3 cup peanut butter. mIx all of the dry items together in a bowl. Pour the peanut butter and honey on top. Using your hands (freshly washed!), squash together all of the ingredients. Shape the mixture into balls, and place into zip lock bags for your camping trip! www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Who would have thought that we would ever become so attached to technology, that the anxiety of surviving without your PC or Laptop while in for repairs, would be so similar to the feeling of helplessness when the engine on your car gives out and it has to go in to a repair shop for a lengthy overhaul? The parallels that reside between these two industries don’t end there. There are, and always will be, unscrupulous characters who will try to take advantage of your lack of understanding about the repairs that are necessary to get your baby back up and running smoothly (don’t get me wrong), because of the nature of any complex technical repair, there will be costs involved. NASA doesn’t hire a fry cook to repair a shuttle, therefore any reputable repair center will have informative technicians that possess the knowledge to do the required repairs properly, and will be able to provide a secure facility that will give customers the confidence in knowing that their Information is safe. This is a brief, but informative look at the industry and what to watch for when choosing a repair facility. Computer and laptop repairs have become the single most fraudulent service related industry in the world; with an average of up to 70% of technicians misdiagnosing or misleading you into unnecessary repairs or replacing parts that were not defective in the first place. Most often misdiagnosis problems are caused by either a technician with a lack of training and experience, or not having the proper diagnostic tools and equipment available during initial diagnostic procedures. Diagnostics are the single most important part of any repair and the proper procedures take time. Beware Of The Free Diagnostic Trap: Many unqualified on-site technicians and repair shops will use this tactic to lure you into thinking that you will instantly save money by using their service. Don’t be fooled. This just means that they will probably be rushing through the diagnostic procedures, giving you a best guess answer at what might be wrong with your system. I have seen it many times, people have had a so called “service technician” show up at their home or business, charge them hundreds of dollars for an attempted repair, and tell the customer that they will need another service call to replace another part that they don’t have with them at the time to complete the job. The customer then pays them www.thenewsyneighbor.com
for their time and books another appointment for him to come back to finish the repairs. Unfortunately the customer has just been duped by the tech into believing that he will be back to complete the job (thanks for the money), or the tech will return (to charge you again) with the only part that he ever needed to complete the job in the first place (but you did get the free diagnostics). Legitimate Repair Centers: Here are some examples of questions to ask before leaving your system for repair: Does the business carry adequate insurance, in case your system is damaged or stolen during the time it is with them for repair? How many years have they been doing business? Do they have diagnostic fees, and how much are the fees (fees at reputable shops range from $50-$100 on average)? Ask for their hourly rates for repairs (most big box repair centers average $100-$150). Will your information remain private during repairs (your information should not be in public view at any time during the repair)? What is the average turnaround time on general repairs (the average repair time at a reputable repair center is 2-4 days unless parts need to be ordered to complete the repair)?
On-Site Repair Technicians: Letting a stranger into your home can be a very risky move. In doing this you are giving them access to all of your personal and sometimes sensitive business or financial information, creating the perfect opportunity for identity theft or worse. These are some of the questions you need to ask before letting a stranger into your home: Is this person operating a registered business that carries a license? Does this person have a provincial taxation or a GST number? Does this person, or business, carry adequate insurance? Is this person a qualified technician (not just some guy that a friend knows that works on computers)? If the repair is too extensive to complete on-site does he have a secure facility that he can take your system to and complete the repairs (not his mom’s basement)? Is this his full time job, or is he just making extra money because his other job doesn’t pay enough? What is his other job? (A good technician will always make plenty of money working in the IT or PC repair industry).
I hope that this has given you an honest, informed look into my industry and wish you the best in finding a repair center that you can be comfortable with, a repair center that will give you the respect of an honest, informed answer, and who completes the repairs on your PC or Laptop in a timely, professional manner. TALKING FROG A boy was crossing a road one day when a frog called out to him and said, ‘If you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful Princess.’ The boy picked up the frog and put it in his pocket. The frog said, ‘Hey, if you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful Princess, I’ll love you forever.’ The boy took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it, and put it back in his pocket. The frog yelled, ‘If you kiss me and turn me back into a Princess, I’ll clean your house, cook for you, and love you forever.’ The boy took the frog out, smiled at it, and put it back. Finally the frog asked, ‘what is it? I’ve told you I’m a beautiful Princess that I’ll cook and clean for you and love you forever. Why won’t you kiss me?’ The boy said, ‘Look, I’m a cub scout. I don’t have time for girlfriends, but a talking frog is really cool.

Yawning is still somewhat of a mystery.
A yawn is a deep inspiration and expiration through a wide open mouth. There are a number of theories as to why people yawn, and yawns may have several different functions. In fact, nearly all vertebrates -- fish, reptiles, birds, mammals -- yawn. And yawns are contagious, at least among people. The main theories as to why people yawn are: 1.)Yawning is a form of social communication. It signals the state of an individual to the group and, because yawns are contagious, can help coordinate the state of the group. In a sense it strengthens group cohesion and helps synchronize the group. (Laughter, which is also contagious, can do the same thing.) 2.) Yawning can be a sign of tiredness. 3.) Yawning can be a sign of boredom. 4.) Yawning can be a sign of mild stress, anxiety or conflict. For example, atheletes may yawn before an event and participants in a meeting may yawn in response to disagreement or tension. 5.) Yawning may be a form of stretching. Many people yawn when waking up. In these cases, the yawn is associated with generalized stretching of the arms and upper body. ~ Robert Schier, M.D

satisfied when any service or performance in ANY country – from wait staff to housekeeping – don’t tip. Tipping is a reward, not an obligation. That being said, in countries like Japan, it may be considered insulting to tip. You need to do your research before you go anywhere. I Am A Squash My name is Summer, yes - Summer Squash, and I am a member of the Cucurbitaceous family. I have many, many relatives including melons and cucumbers. All of my relatives come in tons of different shapes, colours and sizes and did you know you could eat every little bit of me including my flesh, seeds and skin? I originally came from Mexico and we have fed people for over 10,000 years. We liked living in Mexico, but we decided to explore and now we live all over North America. Our good friend Christopher Columbus took us on a trip to Europe and introduced us to all his Portuguese and Spanish explorer friends and now we live in China, Japan, Romania, Turkey, Italy, Egypt and Argentina. We are real world travelers. Not only are we pretty to look at, but we are really good for you and have been found to have anticancer phytonutrients. Vegetable juice obtained from squash can be parallel to juices made from leeks, pumpkin, and radish to prevent cell mutations (cancer-like changes). We are an excellent source of manganese, vitamin C, vitamin A, fibre, potassium, folate, copper, riboflavin, and phosphorus. Many of these nutrients have been shown in studies to be helpful for the prevention of heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, lower high cholesterol levels and stroke. Wow!! Did you also know that high intakes of fibre-rich foods help to keep cancer-causing toxins away from cells in the colon, while the folate, vitamin C, and betacarotene help to protect these cells from the chemicals that can lead to colon cancer? The copper in summer squash is also helpful for reducing the painful symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. We are really, really easy to grow but we like to have a lot of sun and we need a lot of room because we like to roam all over the place. We like to be grown indoors in a small pot until we have at least 4 leaves and then you can put us outside because we need to be germinated by a bee. Did you know you could attract bees by planting Buckwheat or Phacelia in your garden? There are so many of us to choose from like – Acorn, Banana, Butternut, Carnival, Gold Nugget, Hubbard, Kabocha, Spaghetti, Sweet Dumpling, Turban and Zucchini – just to name a few. So if you have room in your garden this year, give it a whirl and plant some squash – you will love growing and eating us and I have included a few recipes so you have ideas about how to cook us. Bon Voyage for now and have the most wonderful and healthy summer! By Kathryn Hartwell To gain the full nutritional benefits of this vegetable, the skins or rinds must be eaten There are several types of summer squash, but zucchini is the most popular. Grated summer squash makes a good substitute for carrots in a carrot cake. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

You can bake pretty much any Squash this way – the favorite in our family is Spaghetti Squash all the kids love it – except Tifannie.
Baked Squash
1 acorn squash, halved 2 Tbsp. butter 2 Tsp. honey or pure maple syrup 2 Tbsp. firmly packed brown sugar Salt and coarsely-ground black pepper to taste Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Cut squash in half lengthwise (from stem to end). Use a spoon to scoop out the seeds and stringy stuff in the center of each squash half. Score the insides of each half several times with a sharp knife. Add 1 Tbsp. of butter, 1 teaspoon of honey, honey (maple syrup or hickory syrup), 1 Tbsp. of brown sugar, salt and pepper to the hollow scoop of each squash half. Place each half in a large baking pan, cut side up. Add about approximately 1/4-inch of water to the bottom of the baking pan so that the skins don't burn and the squash doesn't get dried out. Bake approximately 1 hour or until tender when flesh is poked with a fork. Remove from oven and let cool a little before serving. Spoon any buttery sugar sauce that has not already been absorbed by the squash over the exposed areas. This recipe is great for a BBQ and you can make it the day before.
How to Select Choose squash that are firm and fairly heavy for their size, otherwise they may be dry and cottony inside. Look for squash that have bright, glossy exteriors. Avoid buying squash that have knicks or bruises on their skins or ones that have soft spots. Storage Place summer squash in plastic bags and store in the refrigerator. Fresh summer squash should keep for up to a week. Thicker-shinned varieties such as chayote will stay fresh for two weeks or longer. Page 33

Two men dressed in pilots uniforms walk up the aisle of the aircraft. Both are wearing dark glasses, one is using a guide dog, and the other is tapping his way along the aisle with a cane. Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin, but the men enter the cockpit, the door closes, and the engines start up. The passengers begin glancing nervously around; searching for some kind of a sign that this is just a little practical joke. None is forthcoming. The plane moves faster and faster down the runway, and the people sitting in the window seats realize they’re headed straight for the water at the edge of the airport property. Just as it begins to look as though the plane will plough straight into the wa ter, panicked screams fill the cabin. At that moment, the plane lifts smoothly into the air. The passengers relax and laugh a little sheepishly, and soon all retreat into their magazines and books, secure in the knowledge that the plane is in good hands. Meanwhile, in the cockpit, one of the blind pilots turns to the other and says, ‘You know, Bob, one of these days, they’re going to scream too late and we’re all going to die!!’

This is a letter that we got from one of our wonderful readers: I enjoy your Newsy Neighbor immensely. It is always a good read and informative. I would like to add to your joke section if you care to use it. A little girl in grade 1 goes to school, hangs up her coat and walks down the hall to the classroom. The teacher is up at the front. So the little girl walks up to the teacher, kneels down and licks the teachers dress. The teacher says, “what are you doing, child?” The little girl looks up and says, “my mom is right - your dress is tasteless!” Enjoy. Dick

Dear Life Lines, My neighbour has a cat that keeps stampeding into my yard and using my flowerbed as a toilet. I have had enough! What do you suggest? Signed, Out of patience in Strathmore Dear Out of Patience, With summer’s arrival and the nicer weather cats are bound to roam around and get into other people’s yards if their owners are not responsible pet owners. It can be frustrating, but I would encourage you to use only humane methods of control for the animal. Remember…the cat is just acting natural; it’s the owner who needs to be aware of the bylaws and respectful to his neighbours. Aside from planting flowers (I’ve read marigolds and zinnias repel cats) or shaking cayenne pepper all over your flower beds, you can rent out humane cat traps that will bring the problem to the owner’s attention when they have to go to animal control to retrieve their cat. You can also get in touch with bylaw officers who might be able to offer suggestions. For information on licensing or bylaws you can visit the Strathmore bylaw webpage at http:// www.strathmore.ca/news.php?viewStory=75 On this site it is mentions that “Cats are required to be kept contained within their owner’s personal property lines at all times.” within Strathmore. If you know who owns the cat, as a more direct route, you can write a respectfully worded note or go over and have a friendly conversation mentioning the situation to the cat owner. You want to focus on being very positive and problem-solving or this could quickly deteriorate into a nasty neighbour dispute. Cats have been known to spread a parasitic condition called Toxoplasmosis, so if you have children or expectant mothers working in the flowerbeds, this would be of special concern. Why not attempt to find something complimentary to say about their cat and then mention the bit about the debilitating parasitic condition being a significant concern for you and perhaps they will be more willing to accept responsibility for reining their cat in. Hope this works for you -there’s still lots of gardening time ahead. In the comfort of Sincerely, Life Lines your home

For men and women alike, we tend to see challenges related to our sexual health occurring more than ever before. And even in the modern era, they remain difficult to discuss- even with the ones we trust and love most. For those of us who experience physical, emotional, hormonal, or psychological barriers, these issues often go unmentioned and we continue to struggle with our intimate selves. For men, our sexual health can be impacted by things as natural as the aging process. As men age, it is a natural process for the testosterone in the body to become bound or dormant. This can negatively affect performance, fertility, and drive, and often begins just into our thirties. Often when our prostate health becomes a concern, circulation is affected and it becomes difficult to function. Natural herbal supplements like Tribulus are excellent for releasing bound testosterone and increasing fertility, Horny Goat Weed and Muira Puama have been used for centuries to increase libido and endurance and promote healthy circulation, and Maca is known to support energy levels and help to balance hormone. For women, our sexual selves tend to be affected most often by hormone. Menstruation and Menopause are the two most common hormonal changes that occur in women. For some women, during their cycle, hormone will affect mood, sleep, energy, and may the affect the severity of physical symptoms such as bloating and cramping. For those going through menopause, as our fertility ceases, quite often, our desire decreases in unison. Erratic hormone levels may also cause fatigue, stress, “hot flashes”, poor digestion, and even mild to severe depression. Natural herbal supplements such as Ashwagandha may help with stress, support energy, and increase endurance and sexual function, Damiana has been used traditionally as a sexual tonic for women, and increasing circulation, and Clove Vine and Catuaba are effective for supporting proper digestion and improving mood. For many of us who are looking to improve our intimate lives, there are many safe and effective natural solutions. If you require more information, stop into the Sangster’s Health Centres in our new location in the Marlborough Mall, right across from Dollarama. Page 38

How Do Indoor Tanning Salons Teach Sunburn Prevention?
The Dog Days of Summer Are Here!!
The indoor tanning industry is at the forefront in educating people how to successfully avoid sunburn Come in and discuss your over the course of one’s life. tanning needs. • Studies of indoor tanners have shown consistently We have a program that indoor tanning customers once they begin tanthat is perfect for you! ning in a professional salon, are less likely to sunburn than they were before they started tanning. • Studies have also shown that indoor tanners are less likely to sunburn outdoors as compared to nontanners. Consider, in recent years sunburn incidence in the general population has been steadily increasing while sunscreen usage has been declining. And according to the American Academy of Dermatology, Air Conditioned For Your Comfort the sub-group most likely to sunburn is older men. In contrast, sunscreen usage outdoors among indoor tanners is increasing. with every tan session Indoor tanning professionals believe that teaching Mon - Thurs: 10 am to 8 pm people strictly to avoid the sun may be making them Fri: 10 am to 7 pm - Sat: 10 am to 2 pm more likely to sunburn when they do go outside for Closed Sunday and holidays summer activities – and everyone does go outdoors 403-983-1803 at some point. Consider: Tanning STRATHMORE 1. Tanning is your body’s natural defense mechanism against sunburn, and indoor tanners have activated this defense against burning – a tan essentially multiplies the ability of sunscreen worn outdoors to do its job. That’s one reason non-tanners are more vulnerable when they inevitably do go outdoors. 2. Indoor tanners are educated at professional tanning facilities how to avoid sunburn outdoors, how to use sunscreens appropriately and how to properly moisturize their skin. When you also consider that the majority of people who sunburn are male, according to the AAD, and that 65-70 percent of indoor tanning customers are female, clearly, it is non-tanners who are doing most of the burning outdoors. In the war against sunburn, tanning salons are part of the solution. Those who abstain from sun exposure completely are more likely to sunburn when they inevitably do go outdoors, even if they attempt to wear sunscreen. The professional indoor tanning industry promotes responsible indoor tanning and sunburn prevention as “smart.” We choose not to use the word “safe.” Does This Describe You? Your family is concerned about … Here is why: your health, your housing needs, The word “safe” implies that one can recklessly abuse and the assistance you need with something without any fear of causing harm. In fact, we are playing a key role in successfully prevent403-934-5294 ing that kind of reckless abuse. TEA
They say you should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day – but I’m not that fond of just plain water. I’m trying to loose weight as Aleesha’s wedding is fast approaching and it would be nice to be a little slimmer for the big event. So, I’ve been drinking a lot of tea. There are so many different kinds of tea I was wondering how many of these teas are good for you. I did a little research and this is what I found. Research indicates that naturally occurring flavonoids found in tea have very effective antioxidant properties. Tea is the world’s most popular prepared drink. Chinese Emperor Shen Nung discovered it in 2737 B.C., when a tealeaf accidentally fell into the bowl of hot water he was drinking. The first tea shipment to arrive in Canada was imported by the Hudson Bay Company in 1716 and took more than a year to arrive - Canadians have been tea lovers ever since. I never really thought about where the tea I was drinking came from – just like a lot of the items we purchase at the local store – you never think about how long it has traveled to reach us, well, most of the worlds tea is grown in the hills of Sri Lanka and India to the mountains of Kenya. Tea is grown in some of the world’s most exotic places. Over the past 15 years, research has found that drinking black, green or oolong tea may offer some protection from cardiovascular disease and cancer, lead to reduce risk of kidney stones, and strengthen bones, teeth and the immune system. So, instead of reaching for a soda or a coffee, maybe think about having a nice cup of tea. I’ve included a couple of tea recipes for you to try – might be your next favourite drink. TOO MUCH SUN
We went camping the weekend of June 19th, the one and only truly beautiful weekend we have had so far (as of June 21st). I could not resist spending as much time in the sun as possible and by Sunday, my skin was showing signs of my over indulgence. My forehead was burned so badly that it actually became swollen, which then spread to my eyes. (This happened to me once before when I was in Mexico). I guess I need to buy a big hat. Now two days later, I’m feeling a cold sore developing on my lower lip. I’m sure it is just another reaction to too much sun. It’s really bad timing as Aleesha’s staggette is this weekend and we all know the reaction people have to cold sores – like you have some disease. So I went on the Internet and looked through some info searching for a quick cure. Well, there really isn’t a quick cure but there are some things you can do to quicken the healing process. I’m sure I cannot be the only person this will happen to this summer so I thought I would share the information I found. There is no cure for cold sores, but there are remedies you can use that will reduce the severity and frequency of them. Cold sores may appear after colds, fevers, exposure to the sun, stress, during menstruation, or for no apparent reason. Generally it is felt that anything that compromises the immune system may trigger the cold sores. Cold sores may also indicate a deficiency in calcium. One sign of a calcium deficiency is biting your nails. Take a calcium supplement and see if the problem improves. If you have a cold sore already, pop the sore so it will drain and be able to dry out and heal faster. Here are some other tips to help you get rid of the nasty things sooner: Vitamin C - Take 200-500 mg. of vitamin C along with 200-500 mg. of citrus bioflavonoid three times a day. This remedy will greatly reduce the duration of the sores. Vitamin E - applied topically, will provide pain relief. Yogurt - Eating plain yogurt (with acidophilus) with live cultures is a good preventive measure. Heat-treated yogurt won’t work. People who have added yogurt to their daily diet have discovered that they don’t get cold sores, or very few. Yogurt seems to stimulate the immune system. Using zinc has been reported to reduce the duration of cold sores. Applied topically, it speeds healing. Aloe - When the tingling starts, try rubbing juice from an aloe plant on the affected area. If you are traveling, take a bottle of aloe gel with you just in case a sore begins. This remedy is especially effective if used at the first sign of a cold sore, but will also stop it later on, too, and will begin the healing process immediately and keep the sore from “blossoming.” Lemon balm - German studies indicated that an extract of lemon balm reduced symptoms and sped up the healing process. Mint - A topical application of mint will speed healing of the sore, often within five days. Sage - Make a tea by adding two or three leaves to a cup of boiling water, steep, add one teaspoon of powdered ginger. Drink several cups a day until the sores are cleared up. Tea Steep an ordinary tea bag in boiling water for a few minutes; cool, then apply to lesions. Within four or five days the lesions should crust over and disappear. Vaseline will help ease cracking and dryness. Have a wonderful summer and try to protect your skin from TOO MUCH SUN! www.thenewsyneighbor.com

LADY’S YEARLY EXAM
I went to the doctor for my yearly physical. The nurse started with certain basics. “How much do you weigh?” she asked. “135,” I said. The nurse put me on the scale. It turns out my weight is 180. The nurse asked, “Your height?” “5 foot 4,” I said. The nurse checked and saw that I only measure 5’ 2”. She then took my blood pressure and told me that it is very high. “Of course it’s high!” I screamed, ‘When I came in here I was tall and slender! Now I’m short and fat!” She put me on Prozac.

A man comes into the ER and yells, “My wife’s going to have her baby in the cab!” I grabbed my stuff, rushed out to the cab, lifted the lady’s dress and began to take off her underwear. Suddenly I noticed that there were several cabs - and I was in the wrong one. ~ Submitted by Dr. MacDonald. San Francisco, CA 2. At the beginning of my shift, I placed a stethoscope on an elderly and slightly deaf female patients anterior chest wall. “Big breaths,” I instructed. “Yes, they used to be!” replied the patient. ~ Submitted by Dr. Byrnes. Seattle, WA 3. One day I had to be the bearer of bad news when I told a wife that her husband had died of a massive myocardial infarct. Not more than five minutes later, I heard her reporting to the rest of the family that he had died of a ‘massive internal fart.’ ~ Submitted by Dr. Steinberg 4. During a patients two week follow-up appointment with his cardiologist, he informed me, his doctor, that he was having trouble with one of his medications. “Which one” I asked. “The patch! The Nurse told me to put on a new one every six hours and now I’m running out of places to put it!” I had him quickly undress and discovered what I hoped I wouldn’t see. Yes, the man had over fifty patches on his body! Now, the instructions include removal of the old patch before applying a new one. ~ Submitted by Dr. St. Clair. Norfol, VA 5. While acquainting myself with a new elderly patient, I asked, “How long have you been bedridden?” After a look of complete confusion she answered, “Why, not for about twenty years - when my husband was alive!” ~ Submitted by Dr. Swanson. Corvallis, OR

EMBARRASSING MEDICAL EXAMS 6. I was performing rounds at the hospital one morning and while checking up on a man I asked, “So how’s your breakfast this morning?” “It’s very good except for the Kentucky Jelly. I can’t seem to get used to the taste,” he replied. I then asked to see the jelly and the man produced a foil packet labeled ‘KY Jelly.’ ~ Submitted by Dr. Kransdorf. Detroit, MI 7. As a new, young MD doing his residency in OB, I was quite embarrassed when performing female pelvic exams. To cover my embarrassment, I had unconsciously formed a habit of whistling softly. The middle-aged lady upon whom I was performing this exam suddenly burst out laughing and further embarrassing me. I looked up from my work and sheepishly said, “I’m sorry. Was I tickling you?” She replied with tears running down her cheeks from laughing so hard, “No doctor, but the song you were whistling was ‘I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Wiener!’” Dr. wouldn’t submit his name...

Mortgages 101 For most of us, buying a home is the single most important investment that we take on in our lives. While this often is and should be an exciting time, it can also be the most terrifying for a number of individuals. The reason being…we are not as prepared as we could be. Unfortunately for most, purchasing a home is only half the battle. Acquiring the necessary mortgage financing is the other half. Hopefully this article will help put your mind at ease when the time comes for you to find that perfect home. In my opinion, there are four major steps in the purchase of a home: (1)arranging mortgage financing, (2)working with a realtor to assist you with the search and negotiation of the purchase, (3)finding a lawyer to handle the legal aspects(registering the mortgage on title, etc), and finally, contacting the utility companies(ie. gas, water, electrical, telephone, cable and internet) to have them provide you with these necessary or optional services. Arranging a mortgage does not have to be difficult at all… The first, and most important step to arranging mortgage financing, is to contact a mortgage broker and get pre-approved. This can be done any number of ways for your convenience. We can meet with you in person(either at your home, office or where ever you prefer) to discuss your application, or we can “Your Friendly Neighborhood Siderman” offer you a number of different channels(ie. phone, fax, email or secure online applications), in order to attain the information we need to send your application to one or more of the 50+ lenders that we work with. This process usually takes no more than 24 hours. The benefit of being pre-approved is your interest rates are guaranteed for 120 days, so there is no rush for you to go out and put an offer on the first home you see. As well, you know up front exactly what the maximum mortgage Email: hwscowboy@shaw.ca amount you are qualified for, as well as know how much your principal and interest payment will be for that size of mortgage. Serving Strathmore & Area Now being pre-approved for mortgage financing is great. However, pre-approvals are only based on the information provided

Thinking about selling? call for a FREE in-home evaluation. No obligation. The first, and most important step to arranging mortgage financing, is to contact a mortgage broker and get pre-approved. This can be done any number of ways for your convenience. This process usually takes no more than 24 hours. The benefit of being pre-approved is your interest rates are guaranteed for 120 days, so there is no rush for you to go out and put an offer on the first home you see. As well, you know up front exactly what the maximum mortgage amount you are qualified for, as well as know how much your principal and interest payment will be for that size of mortgage. Now being pre-approved for mortgage financing is great. However, pre-approvals are only based on the information provided by you to the lender via your mortgage broker, as well as your credit history, which is obtained primarily through a credit reporting agency, such as Equifax or Trans Union, with your authorization. Having said that, once you find a home you wish to buy, and the offer is accepted, you normally have only a few days to arrange “firmâ€? financing and waive that condition. The fastest way to do this is to have these conditions met prior to putting in the offer. So what do you need to do to arrange firm mortgage financing? In most cases, the banks need you to satisfy two main conditions: prove your income, and confirmation of your down payment. Depending on the type of work you do, you will likely need to provide a letter of employment and a most recent paystub. If you are business for self, you will need to provide confirmation that you own the business as well as your last two years worth of personal income tax returns or Notice of Assessments. Now keep in mind, we are unique individuals, and sometimes our income stream(s) can be unique as well. The best thing to do is speak directly with your mortgage broker so that they can advise you on what source documentation will be necessary. As for the down payment, buyers tend to put as little as nothing to as much as twenty-five percent of the purchase price down on the purchase of their new home. This usually comes in the form of accumulated savings, a withdrawal from their Registered Retirement Savings Plan or a gift from an immediate family member. If you are putting less than ten percent down, then you also have to confirm that you have access to an additional 1.5% of the purchase price for closing costs(ie. legal fees, utility hook ups, etc). We recognize that there are a number of different ways to acquire the down payment. Again, if you would like to include a down payment, I urge you to discuss with your mortgage broker how much of a down payment you have and where it is originating in order for them to advise you on what documentation will be required. While there are other conditions that exist with a purchase contract and/or mortgage financing, these are generally not something that you will have a great deal of control over. If you get pre-approved and work with your mortgage broker to eliminate as many of the conditions as possible, you will find that arranging mortgage financing to be an extremely smooth process, and allow you to focus on other aspects of buying your new home. ~ Jason, Axiom Mortgage Solutions. The early Rise in Mortgage Rates has given a Boost to Housing Sales. The Spring Market has come early to Calgary. NOW is a good time to list your home. The housing market enjoyed a healthy boost in March as homebuyers anticipated an earlier than expected rise in interest rates, according to figures released by the Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB®).” “The improved economic conditions, better employment prospects, and an earlier than expected rise in mortgage rates are all contributing to this early boost in sales this year.” 250 Lakeside Greens Crescent.

Here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about Canadians:
If your local Dairy Queen is closed from September through May, you may live in Canada. If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don’t work there, you may live in Canada. If you’ve worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you may live in Canada. If you’ve had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you may live in Canada. If ‘vacation’ means going anywhere south of Detroit for the weekend, you may live in Canada. If you measure distance in hours, you may live in Canada. If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you may live in Canada. If you have switched from ‘heat’ to ‘A/C’ In the same day and back again, you may live in Canada. If you can drive 90 km/hr through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you may live in Canada. If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked, you may live in Canada. If you carry jumper cables in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you may live in Canada. If you design your kid’s Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you may live in Canada. Page 50

EMBARRASSING MEDICAL EXAMS 8. A woman and a baby were in the doctor’s examining room, waiting for the doctor to come in for the baby’s first exam. The doctor arrived and examined the baby, checked his weight, and being a little concerned, asked if the baby was breast-fed or bottle-fed. “Breast-fed,” she replied. “Well, strip down to your waist,” the doctor ordered. She did. He proceeded to give her breasts a very professional and detailed examination. Motioning to her to get dressed, the doctor said, “No wonder this baby is underweight. You don’t have any milk.” “I know,” she said, “I’m his Grandma. But I’m glad I came!” ~Dr. wouldn’t submit his name...
