To find out, try our two-point determination experiment. All over your body you have tiny pressure sensors in your skin. Some areas have many pressure sensors and other areas have relatively few. Areas where the pressure sensors are packed in are very sensitive to touch. This two-point determination experiment lets you discover what parts of your skin have many pressure sensors, and where they are relatively sparse. The experiment involves gently pressing two sharp points (use a paper clip!) onto a friend’s skin and asking them whether they can feel one or two pressure points.

In sensitive areas, the pressure sensors are closer together, so the two tips of the paper clip will activate two separate pressure points. Messages from both sensors are sent to your brain and you feel both tips.

In less sensitive areas, the pressure sensors are further apart, so both tips activate only a single pressure sensor. A message from this sensor is sent to your brain, and you only feel one tip on your skin. For this experiment, you will need: A paper clip, a pen and paper, a ruler, and a friend. Lighten their load Sometimes life is overwhelming. Whether it's one bag of groceries too many or a to-do list that's longer than the day, everyone could do with a hand, literal or metaphorical, at some point. Look for the next person in need and step in. Scrape your neighbor's car, get the door for an overloaded shopper, or engage with the children of an exhausted mom. A few minutes of your time could turn someone's tribulation to triumph.
Offer up an authentic compliment A simple but heartfelt compliment can go a long way to boosting the receiver's confidence. Admire a stranger's outfit, commend a co-worker's innovative idea, or congratulate a family member on their delicious cooking. Acknowledging others' successes and virtues is a powerful antidote to gossip and negativity.
Take the time to listen How often have you suffered some affliction in silence when simply saying it aloud would have brought perspective and relief? Next time someone responds unconvincingly when you ask how they are, offer them the time and space to share their problem. A listening ear might be all they need to overcome their troubles. Setting a Marketing Budget for Your Small Business Don’t Be Afraid of Getting Your Name Out There!
One thing I’ve learned during my time as an entrepreneur is that we small business owners are always looking to take things to the next level. There’s a constant desire to kick things up a notch, to hunt for the next big thing, to look for more. I’ve worked with companies both large and small, and a great way to move the meter on your business is to consider doing a bit of marketing. Unfortunately, that can sometimes be where things get a bit tricky. The world of marketing is, to many, a scary, daunting place, full of “creatives” and “buzz words,” and people looking to part your business from its hard-earned money. Now, there are plenty of irrational fears about the industry that can be explained away, but nearly any effective form of marketing is going to necessitate an investment of capital – and therefore, will require a budget. There’s that terrifying, six-letter word! It can always be a little distressing setting a budget for anything, especially as a small business owner. I think that a lot of this fear comes from the fact that people often view funds earmarked for a budget as money that’s been thrown into the wind. It used to be theirs, but now it’s gone – sacrificed to the gods of marketing! Further, the proposition of setting a budget for something as nebulous and conceptual as “marketing” can be an odd experience as well. In most cases, when you spend money on something, you receive something tangible in return: if you spend X amount of money, you get Y product in return. For individuals new to the world of marketing, it can be tough parting with that income, especially when the return doesn’t necessarily appear to be a quantifiable thing. With all that being said, I would encourage anybody who owns a small business to approach marketing from a wholly fresh per-

spective. Spending money to make money is never an easy ask, but it is oftentimes an entirely necessary part of being a business owner. Further, investing in marketing can be the best thing you do for your company – if you’re smart about it. It’s all about knowing your business, making intelligent decisions, and working with a team or individual that has your best interests at heart. So, where to begin in determining a marketing budget? Well, let’s start with what’s most important – your company. The current state of your business and the stage of life that it’s at will help you decide some of the overarching characteristics of your marketing budget. Has your business been around for a few years, and does it already enjoy an appreciable amount of brand recognition within its target market? You can probably get away with spending anywhere between 6-10% of your projected revenue on marketing. If you’re a brand-new business and are just working on getting your name out there, you’ll probably want to bump that number up to be closer to 10-15% of your revenue; this might seem like a hefty chunk of change, but keep in mind that if your business is newer, 15% of your earnings will generally amount to a much smaller total than the same percentage of an established business’s revenue. You can play around with these numbers a bit – and of course, at the end of the day, it all comes down to doing what’s best for your business – but these are some decent figures to start out with. Numbers like these can be a little unnerving, but keep in mind that if you’re starting a new business, you’ll be looking to carve out a market space and develop brand recognition with an audience group that has literally never heard of you before – not exactly an easy task. As businesses establish themselves and develop that brand awareness, the cost of doing marketing drops significantly, as they’ve already got that name-recognition going for them. From there, it’s a matter of deciding how to best allocate those funds. That in and of itself is a topic complex enough for an entirely separate article, but to give you a quick overview, there are a number of marketing venues that you’re now empowered to pursue after setting your budget, including branding, social media, websites, advertising (both digital and traditional), content, and even special events. Once you’ve nailed down your marketing budget, a whole plethora of options to set your business ahead become available. It can be a little intimidating setting that budget in the first place, but once you do, the opportunities that begin to present themselves are nearly limitless. To avoid turning your recovery shake into a gut-busting milk shake, labels that say “low-carb,” “low-sugar” or “sugar-free” sound like a good idea. The problem? Makes 10 servings 3 cups (240 gm) instant nonfat dry milk, divided 1 cup (80 gm) old fashioned or instant dry oats 1 cup (142 gm) almonds Sweetener of your choice Place 1 cup instant dry milk, 1 cup oats, 1 cup almonds in blender. Pulse until smooth. Place remaining instant dry milk in blender and pulse just a few times until blended. Place in container and cover tightly. Keep at room temperature if you use within 2 weeks - if storing longer, store in the refrigerator so the nuts don't go rancid. Life Lessons
Life. Full of lessons, right? Lessons that can hurt, sometimes a lot. Despite all our shoulda/coulda/ woulda's, most of us understand or have experienced this: If we had never had that difficult time in our life, neither would we have the blessings that somehow are linked to its happening. Think of a ship at sea, tossed by a sudden storm. The captain of the ship sets sail on a course. Now, some captains know exactly where they plan to steer their ship. They have the plans in place and have the necessary crew and equipment to get to where they are going. There are also, however, those captains that hope they know where they are heading: they may keep their eye on the horizon but are not fully equipped for the arduous journey yet to come. And, of course, there are captains that have no idea their ship has left the harbour, let alone how to steer it. No matter what type of captain we are when we set out - life happens, right? For better or worse, destination in mind or floating aimlessly, we are all on this journey called life. Life, of course, never goes quite as planned or without any difficulties. No matter how prepared we are, there will always be lessons waiting for us on our journey. In the midst of a storm, every captain will do their very best to stay (1st) alive and (2nd) in control of the
direction of their ship. We are not necessarily aware of what we are learning as we navigate, at least maybe not right away. We have no idea whether any good will come from this difficulty. We are forced to grow, learn, hurt, change, heal, close a door, take a new path... Everyone has weathered a storm. They are hard. They often hurt. They often change our perspective. But hear me when I say this: EVERY storm has blessings woven within it, like gold thread in a common fabric. What we learn and gain from life’s lessons can, and often do, outweigh the pain that we had to go through to learn. In truth, it can take years of distance between the lesson and our ability to see the full expression of the blessings that have arisen. Blessings that could only enter our lives through the lessons we have learned, and the course we were set upon. I believe every one of us can see beauty that we now have in our life that directly correlates to the lessons and direction our storms have given us. Faith in that, as a Divine principle, is one that has given me comfort when I have felt frightened and hopelessly at the mercy of life. If you are currently in the midst of a storm, please let these words give you hope: No matter how much it hurts right now, it will be ok. Your ship is one that can withstand the tempest. What you are currently experiencing will pass. And at the other end of the bad weather, the sun is still shining. Your rainbow can only be seen once you get out from under the clouds. Have faith that because of toughest parts of life there are golden threads being woven in the cloth, waiting to catch the sun and enrich the tapestry of the ongoing creation that is your life. A question I get asked all the time as a Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach is, what should I eat? This question doesn't have a one-size-fits-all answer. The answer differs based on lifestyle, fitness and health goals, the individual’s nutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities, sleep, stress levels, and on and on. You get the picture! We also don't need to make it overly complicated, stressing out about food and nutrition is counterproductive to overall health and most fat loss goals. Very basically, when you stress or get anxious, your body releases cortisol and other stress hormones; these hormones can disrupt sleep and make it easier to store fat.

I'm going to give you some food tips that everyone can follow that will improve health and aide in fat loss. - Drink more water. - Stop drinking pop or sugary drinks. - Avoid artificially flavoured and coloured ingredients. - If you can't pronounce the ingredients, don't eat it. - Don't be afraid of healthy fats. - Eat for fuel, not comfort. - Eat brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. Here is a recipe that is a favourite of mine for breakfast, lunch or supper (I don't typically eat traditional breakfast foods). I borrowed this recipe from budgetbytes.com and I've made many variations of it. Like I mentioned before, food shouldn't stress you out! Change the recipe to your tastes. Switch to ground beef, lamb, or chicken (my preference with this recipe); just make it delicious.
Greek Turkey Burgers 1-1.5 lbs of ground turkey 6 halves of sun dried tomatoes, chopped 1 medium red onion, diced 2 oz. frozen spinach (I use small handful), chopped and drained 1/4 crumbled feta 1 tsp oregano 1/2 tsp minced garlic (to your taste) 1/3 cup of bread crumbs (use gluten free of needed) 1 egg

I AM AN... APPLE
You’ve heard the story of Adam and Eve and how they were kicked out of the Garden of Eden for swiping an apple. Well, I
know why they did it; apples are good for you! Those crazy kids just wanted a little bite of the bountiful, a jolt of the juicy, and frankly I don’t blame them one little bit. Before I go any further, I guess introductions are in order. My name is Adam—haha! An apple named Adam, it’s kind of like a cat named Tom, or a dog named Chili. You just can’t make stuff like this up. Anyway, I’m Adam, and it’s nice to make your acquaintance.
While my most famous ancestor was a product of the spectacular one-tree orchard at Eden, most of my relatives originated in Western Asia. I don’t mean to sound immodest, but we apples really are the rock stars of fruit. Back in the day, Gaia (aka Mother Earth) presented a golden apple tree to Zeus and his blushing bride, Hera, on their wedding day. The ancient Persians, followed by the Greeks, then the Romans, considered apples the very personification of pleasure. (That has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? You won’t hear anything like that said of, say, grapefruit). Wealthy Persians created walled apple gardens, and called them pairidaeza. The Greeks and Romans followed suit in Latin they were called pardisus. Sounds like paradise to me. It was the Romans who, in the process of conquering most of Europe, brought apples along with their legions and flush toilets. The Roman poet Horace noted in 100 B.C. that the perfect meal starts with eggs, and ends with us. While we’ve inspired lots of love and gastronomic delight over the centuries, we’ve also stimulated the odd brain cell. For example, it took one of my relatives

Remember the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”? Well, like many sayings, this one happens to be mostly true. We are, in fact, very, very good for you. Researchers have said we may reduce the risk of colon, prostate, and lung cancer. We’re a rich source of antioxidant compounds. We may also help combat heart disease, promote weight loss, and our fibre can assist in controlling cholesterol. My green cousins can act as a liver and gall bladder cleanser, and even aid in softening gallstones. Because of our high-water content, we’re cooling and moistening, and can aide in reducing fever; just grate us and serve to the patient, et voila. Steamed apples sweetened with honey are beneficial for a dry cough and may help remove mucous from the lungs, plus, prepared that way, we’re just plain delicious. Our flavour is a magical blend of tartness, sweetness, and bitterness, capped by a heady aroma, a mysterious blend of 250 trace chemicals that awakens the senses (remember, we’re a highly romantic fruit). But wait, there's more! Eating us raw gives the gums a healthy massage and cleans the teeth. And as if all that wasn’t enough, we’re a good source of potassium, folic acid, and vitamin C. We also have trace amounts of B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and zinc for good measure. I could go on, but I don’t want you to think I’m bragging. So, I’ll stop with the back-slapping and pass on a few ideas for ways you can eat me. When you toss me into a salad, my little bursts of sweetness will make said salad special. Slice me on top of your peanut butter sandwich to give it some sweet crunch, and pleasantly contrasting flavour. Make a vegan Waldorf salad with diced apples, diced celery, raisins, and vegan mayonnaise. If you’re fortunate enough to have a juicer in your kitchen, you can enjoy fresh apple juice throughout the year (yum). And in case you’re felling a little frisky, try some of these easy recipes featuring yours truly. Enjoy me for your health. Enjoy me for the sheer fun of it!

Most of you eat us raw; watch out for our seeds, though, they’re slightly poisonous. For those of you who are a little more industrious, we can be canned or juiced, we can be milled to produce apple cider, and our juice can be fermented to make vinegar and distilled to make all sorts of alcoholic beverages. Apple butter (my personal favourite) and apple jelly are both popular, and we can even be made into oil.

2-3 cooking apples, peeled and sliced. Add a squeeze of lemon juice or orange juice to prevent apples from turning brown. Topping 1/3 cup brown sugar ½ tsp cinnamon Place flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Cut in or rub butter into flour mixture until it is crumbly. Make a well in the center. In another bowl, beat eggs until frothy. Add milk and vanilla. Pour into well. Stir just enough to moisten. Place into a greased 8x8 inch cake pan. Arrange sliced apples on top of batter, slightly pushing them into the batter. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon mix over top of the apples. Bake in a 350°F oven for 35-45 min. BAKED APPLE SALMON STEAKS
2 salmon steaks 1 large apple, chopped 1 onion, chopped 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp lemon juice Place salmon separately on 2 tinfoil sheets large enough to fold and seal salmon. Add chopped apple and onion divided evenly between salmon steaks. Pour balsamic vinegar and lemon juice
over salmon, apple, and lemon mixture. Wrap tightly in foil so juice and steam do not escape. Place on baking pan and bake in 350°F oven for about 20 minutes. Susan Kane – Strathmore, Alberta

5 medium apples 1 can whole cranberry sauce ¾ cup sugar 2 tbsp all purpose flour Topping: ½ cup grated nuts of your choice 1 cup rolled oats 5 tbsp packed brown sugar 1 tsp cinnamon ¼ cup melted butter Preheat oven to 375°F. For filling, peel and core apples then slice. Combine cranberry sauce, sugar and flour in bowl. Mix well. Pour cranberry mixture over apples in baking pan. Combine nuts, oats, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and melted but ter. Mix well. Sprinkle over mixture. Bake 35-40 minutes or until fruit is tender. Serve over your favourite ice cream. the same experience. The real problem is this… we got off track, and now we are having a hard time trying to get the habit back in place… It is never easy, is it? The Fit Bit is back on, we’re walking 5000 steps a day (baby steps); that is what makes it work. We know that if we can do this, you can do it, too. Some people need to lose weight, while others need a combination of lifestyle changes. This may seem like a lot to take on. But with a little bit of work, you can manage your diabetes and take control of your health. Here are some tips to help you get started, no matter where you are on your type 2 diabetes journey.
Losing Weight
Many people with type 2 diabetes are also overweight. If you need to lose weight, you’re not alone. Controlling your weight can help you regulate your blood sugar levels. A major part of managing your weight is making healthy food choices. Strive for a diet that contains a variety of nutrients, such as: • vitamins, found in fruits and fortified cereals • minerals, found in vegetables and dairy • protein, found in meat, nuts, and seeds • healthy carbohydrates, found in vegetables, legumes, and whole grains • healthy fats, found in olive oil, nuts, and dairy It can be difficult to reach your desired body weight. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases says that losing just 10 to 15 pounds can make a difference. Cut back your total calories each day by eating smaller portions, and you may have more success with weight control. Of course, talk to your primary care doctor, diabetes health team, or a dietitian before starting a weight loss program.

Exercise
Regular exercise can help to control your weight. It can also decrease your risk of other health complications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you should try to get 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, five days a week. Moderate-intensity exercise includes activities like fast walking, biking, jogging, aerobics, and swimming. Be creative and find other activities, like skiing or surfing, that raise your heart rate and cause you to sweat. Check with your doctor before starting a program to be sure that it’s safe, especially for your heart and your joints. If you’re not used to exercising regularly, start off slowly and then work your way up to doing more each time.
Medications
You may be able to manage type 2 diabetes through diet and exercise, but you may also need the aid of prescription medications. Diabetes Medications are typically oral pills that help control blood sugar levels. Often, the medicine will lower your blood sugar, and you’ll notice that your levels are better controlled. There are many different medications used for type 2 diabetes. You may need only one kind or a combination of several. Take each medication as it is prescribed, and let your doctor know if you experience any side effects.
Oral Health
Having type 2 diabetes puts you at risk for dental problems such as gum disease. When your blood sugar levels are too high, you may have trouble fighting off bacteria that cause oral infections. You may also have a higher risk of dry mouth, which can cause sores that make it hard to chew food. Regular brushing and flossing is particularly important. To avoid problems, brush your teeth after eating and use a soft toothbrush. Floss your teeth at least once a day, but be gentle when working the floss between your teeth. See your dentist regularly and be sure to tell them that you have type 2 diabetes. Your dentist may also recommend other resources for keeping your teeth healthy.
Watching for Complications
Complications from type 2 diabetes can develop in almost any area of your body. So, it’s important to be aware of certain signs. Type 2 diabetes can increase your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, or stroke. See your doctor for help with testing to check your blood cholesterol and your blood pressure. Uncontrolled blood sugar levels can also cause poor circulation that affects your feet. Take good care of your feet by wearing socks at all times, even around the house. Check your feet for sores and keep your toenails short. Make sure that your shoes fit well and aren’t causing blisters. Poor circulation can also damage blood vessels in other areas, such as your kidneys or the retina of your eyes. Look for signs of problems, and tell your doctor if you’re not feeling well. Day-to-day management of type 2 diabetes is ongoing. It may be overwhelming at first, but establishing a regular schedule can help you stay on top of your disease. Well, there you have it! THE IMPORTANCE OF DAILY FLOSSING

We all know that it’s important for you to see your local dentist and hygienist regularly to maintain your oral health. Although your hygienist may
go over brushing and flossing technique during a dental cleaning, she/he may not share with you all the advantages that come with embracing some waxed floss. Did you know that flossing can extend your life? Really – we’re not making this stuff up in an attempt to get you running to the bathroom to floss like a crazy person!! Daily flossing can really extend your life due to keeping bacterial levels, and therefore associated inflammation, to a normal level. Floss is considered an inter-dental cleaner – meaning it cleans in-between teeth – removing food debris, plaque, and bacteria. If not removed, plaque levels increase along with bacteria, which results in increased acid formation and irritation to gum and bone tissue. The inflammation that occurs in the mouth is displayed as puffy gums that bleed easily and pull-away from teeth in an attempt to avoid the irritation. Gums that are inflamed, puffy, and have pulled away from the neck of a tooth, create the perfect environment for more trapped food debris, plaque formation, and further inflammation. It’s a vicious cycle – no flossing, plaque development – plaque development creates swollen gums – swollen gums provide an area for food particles to become trapped – more plaque forms, and on and on. But, just a few minutes spent every day flossing teeth can stop the cycle and control the level of plaque and bacteria in the mouth. A few minutes a day is all it takes – but the rewards are huge as the consistent removal of food debris and plaque contributes greatly to maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums – and helps reduce the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and other physical diseases. We would encourage all patients to invest a few minutes each day brushing and flossing. This easy but effective method of keeping teeth clean helps prevent tooth decay, bad breath, gum and bone loss and premature loss of teeth. What have you got to lose by not flossing? How Do You Feel?
When you hear or see these words ‘Health and Wellness’ (two simple words, right?), what comes to your mind? Your physical body, nutrition, weight loss or
gain, exercise, doctors, sleep (too much or not enough), stress, mental health, emotional health, spiritual health or just overall well-being? Yes, exploring and answering this question can be complicated and sometimes overwhelming to say the least. Where does one start and when do you even start thinking about health and wellness? These are all very important questions and my hope is that it began as an infant and/or child, and that your parents were consciously aware of your health and wellness; mental, physical, emotional and even spiritual health. Here are some simple tips to help you maintain your health and wellness:
1. You should always be aware of what you put into your body as fuel to help you move, sleep, manage
stress, and to help you stay active and vibrate. These should include the right vitamins and minerals for your body, along with a well-balanced diet. 3. For mental and emotional health, this can be a little trickier! Everyone has their own points of view and
feelings get tossed into the mix regarding this aspect of health and wellness. Staying positive helps a lot to help maintain better overall health, but it can be very hard to do when your subconscious mind plays tricks on you and you hear and/or feel very negative thoughts and feeling about yourself or others. Sometimes when this occurs, we do not even realize that this is really happening unless we are fully aware of it or someone else points it out to us. Being with family, friends and/or partners can have a very strong influence on the state of your mental and emotional health. We should be getting love, support, encouragement, and even healthy criticism for us to learn and grow. There are so many components to mental and emotional health that it is not really that simple; it is, in fact, very complicated! All we can really do is to try our best, never give up, ask a lot of questions, be willing to listen or speak our minds and try new things to open our minds. Sometimes all it takes is to just ask for help!
4. Spiritual health is also very complex. There are
so many different layers and beliefs and no one has the right to tell you what you should believe in or not. Respecting others on all levels of life helps you to stay healthy with your body, mind and spirit. Trust in yourself, love yourself completely, and take care of all of you and all the layers of your being: mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Yes, health and wellness is complicated and it will take time for you to learn what your body, mind and soul need to stray strong, healthy and happy. Just knowing that it can be done makes it all worthwhile. So, go out and start your health and wellness journey one experience at a time!

Ok, I admit it. I may be a wee bit of a quote junkie. They are in every room of my house, on walls and table tops. Some are short, only a few words, while others fill a 16” x 20” frame. My computer monitor has a rotating slideshow of the most inspiring quotes I’ve come across and every notebook I have ever written in contains dozens of quotes from the speakers I’ve heard. I have quotes taped to my desk and monitor such as one by Albert Einstein that says, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” And if you’ve read my previous articles in the Newsy Neighbour, you may have noticed that they all start with… yes, you guessed it… a quote! For me, quotes are like having wise, supportive friends around you all the time. I believe quotes can motivate you into action or cause you to pause and reflect. They can bring comfort during times of challenge and clarity during times of confusion. They can be frivolous and fun or they can have a deep personal meaning. Yes, quotes are an excellent part of any wellness program as they certainly do feed the mind and soul. My best friend is a good example of this. When his father passed away, they found a typewritten quote (prayer) in his wallet that he had been carrying around for many years. Les was so moved by how important the message was to his dad that he tattooed it onto his forearms exactly as it was written and in the same typewriter font as his dad’s note. This is what his dad’s favourite football coach, Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant, read to his players before every game and it reads, “This is the beginning of a new day, which God has given me to use as I will – I can create or destroy – but I should choose wisely, so as not to forget the price I paid for it. What I do today is very important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes this day will be gone forever, leaving something in its place, which I have traded for it.” As a result of the deep impact this has had on his life, Les is in the midst of creating a daily inspiration email program that will send subscribers a quote, thought to ponder and a short activity to help them experience the message of the quote. He knows, as do many of my other quote-loving friends, just how quotes can positively impact people’s lives. Last week, quotes were the source of inspiration at the Toastmasters meeting in Strathmore as each person was given a random quote and asked to speak on it for two minutes. The quote I received was, “Until you value yourself, you won’t value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it,” by M. Scott Peck. My interpretation of this quote is to appreciate who you are and to gift yourself time to do things that matter to you, to spend quality time with those whose company you enjoy. We can get so caught up in the ‘doing-ness’ of life that we forget to stop, breathe and enjoy the moment we are

Bathing Suit Shopping I have just been through the annual pilgrimage of torture and humiliation known as buying a bathing suit.
Back in the 1940's and 1950's, the bathing suits for women with a mature figure were designed for women with a mature figure boned, trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold back and uplift and they did a good job. Today's stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure carved from a potato chip. The mature woman has a choice - she can either front up at the maternity department and try on a floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus who escaped from Disney's Fantasia - or she can wander

around every run-of-the-mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of fluorescent rubber bands. What choice did I have? I wandered around, made my sensible choice and entered the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room. The first thing I noticed was the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material. The Lycra used in bathing costumes was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch small rockets from a slingshot, which give the added bonus that if you manage to actually lever yourself into one, you are protected from shark attacks. The reason for this is that any shark taking a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer whiplash. I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap in place, I gasped in horror - my bosom had disappeared! Eventually, I found one bosom cowering under my left armpit. It took a while to find the other. At last I located it flattened beside my seventh rib. The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups. The mature woman is meant to wear her bosom spread across her chest like a speed bump. I realigned my speed bump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full view assessment. The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately, it only fit those bits of me willing to stay inside it. The rest of me oozed out rebelliously from top, bottom, and sides. I looked like a lump of play dough wearing undersized cling wrap. As I tried to work out where all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent sales girl popped her head through the curtains. "Oh, there you are!" she said, admiring the bathing suit...I replied that I wasn't so sure and asked what else she had to show me. I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking tape, and a floral two-piece that gave the appearance of an oversized napkin in a serviette ring. I struggled into a pair of leopard skin bathers with ragged frill and came out looking like Tarzan's Jane pregnant with triplets and having a rough day. I tried on a black number with a midriff and looked like a jellyfish in mourning. I tried on a bright pink pair with such a high cut leg I thought I would have to wax my eyebrows to wear them. Finally, I found a suit that fit...a two-piece affair with shorts style bottom and a loose blouse-type top. It was cheap, comfortable, and bulge friendly, so I bought it. When I got home, I read the label which said "Material may become transparent in water." I'm determined to wear it anyway.... I'll just have to learn to do the breaststroke in the sand. Budget 2017 Misses The Mark For Constituents In Bow River Budget 2017 was presented to the House of Commons on March 22nd. The Liberal government and their Finance Minister, Bill Morneau, have again presented a budget that will leave billions of dollars of debt for children and grandchildren to pay.
The Liberals have decided that they want to continue nickel and dime Canadians so that they can further add to the taxpayers already maxed out credit card. There are tax hikes that will hurt working families and affect our most vulnerable citizens like our seniors, who have been completely ignored. These tax hikes will negatively impact people with young children. Prime Minister Trudeau’s government has indebted future generations to pay for their expensive schemes. Our Conservative Party will continue to be the voice of taxpayers. While this Prime Minister is off vacationing and taking selfies, Bow River constituents need leadership and relief now. For the

natural resource sector, this budget is like kicking Alberta when it is down, since the Liberals are changing the way deductions for newly found oil and gas wells are calculated. These are tough times for people across Alberta. We need a budget that creates jobs, and incentivizes innovation and growth in our small businesses. Unfortunately, this Liberal budget did nothing to address those issues. The only growth we have seen since 2015 is that the federal government has grown by 12%! Raising taxes on alcohol and tobacco, hiking EI premiums, slashing tax credits brought in by the previous Conservative government, and growing the size of government are not ways to jumpstart a stale economy. The Liberals have allocated money to prosecute small businesses like professional services, agriculture producers, etc., because they believe they are tax cheats. Nothing could be further from the truth. Small businesses value their money, and invest it in hiring local people and supporting our rural economy. Companies across Canada are ready to pack up and leave for the United States. Their current government understands that business taxes must be low, and you cannot have a regressive carbon tax if you hope to be competitive on the world stage. I think this is why so many people today are really struggling with the realities of a weak economy. If people measure their worth based on a job, what happens when they no longer have that job? Right now, so many people are struggling with job-loss-related depression. They see job loss, even through no fault of their own, as a huge sign of failure. Answer this question right now: “So what do you do?”

5 TIPS FOR SPECTACULAR SPRING GARDENING
Why do we as a society tend to define a person’s worth by a few words on a business card? Why does it seem a person’s value is directly tied to what they do for a living? Why do reality TV shows, and I use that word very lightly, always show the person’s occupation alongside their name? The Bachelor’s Ryan – Firefighter, Big Brother’s Jackie – Professional Pizza Maker.
After a long winter, spring can feel like it’s a long time coming. We’re all anxious for the sight of crocuses and tulips, and the gardeners among us are desperate to get our fingers in the soil.
It starts when we are in grade school with our kindergarten teachers asking us what we want to be when we grow up. By the time we graduate high school, the pressure to have an answer is insane. Why can’t we answer happy - or healthy, or inspiring, or content, or naked on a beach? Why can’t my life goal be to make people smile? What is wrong with choosing a future not based on a pay cheque or corporate ladder? Why can’t I work in a fast food restaurant asking, “Do you want fries with that?” if it provides me with the funds to live a happy life? Why do we assume success in life equals success in career? Why do some people still, in this day and age, think stay-at-home parents are somehow not of as much value as the suits and ties of the corporate world? Why do most stay-at-home parents devalue themselves to the point that when they are asked what do you do that they answer “Oh, I’m just a Mom.”?
Starting a few seeds in a sunny window is a very easy way to get a jump on the season, and it’s easier than you might expect: • Seeding trays with clear, plastic domes will help your seeds germinate better, and there are even inexpensive versions with supplemental lights. • Resist the temptation to plant a whole packet of seeds if you don’t want that many plants. You can always save some for next year. • Check the seed packet to see how long your selected plants will take to reach maturity, or when they should bloom. Then calculate back so that you seed indoors at the correct time.
But before you dash outside, take a few moments to plan, and your garden will look all the better for it. Here are five tips for an awesome gardening season:

Build the soil
Healthy plants start with healthy soil. Use plenty of organic matter to create ‘living’ soil: • Compost, humus and well-composted manure will improve the texture and drainage of your soil, and add essential nutrients for your plants. • Be wary of mixing materials like bark chips, sawdust and other ‘semi-composted’ matter into your soil. Although they might help improve the texture or drainage, it’s important to remember that, as these materials break down and decompose, they will actually draw nitrogen away from the soil. • Consider setting aside a small area for a compost bin. Instead of heading to the landfill, your waste veg can become a free supply of beautiful, nutritious soil.
Keep it natural
When you build rich, healthy soil, it’s much easier to avoid using chemicals: • Healthy plants are less attractive to bugs. • Healthy soil watered with compost tea will be packed with every nutrient your growing plants could desire. • Companion planting is a great way to discourage bugs. That’s a topic for an entire article on its own, but if you’re interested in learning more, there’s plenty of information online.

Grilled Peach and Mozzarella Salad
Do I have your attention?
I know many of you would never consider even the slightest sip of this type of alcohol, but I am here to tell you, believe it or not, it is good for you. If you are going to partake in having a little sip of an alcoholic beverage now and again (besides red wine, of course) you might want to consider TEQUILA. It is brewed from blue agave, which when its leaves are sheared, leave a massive pit referred to in Spanish as the “piña,” or pineapple. The agave juice that will be fermented and distilled into tequila comes from heating and crushing the piña. According to the American Chemical Society, the agave that tequila is made from helps promote calcium absorption, the regulation of lipid absorption and facilitates the growth of intestinal flora. Almost all tequila is produced in the Mexican state of Jalisco. But Mexican law also allows tequila to be produced in certain limited municipalities in the states of Tamaulipas, Nayarit, Michoacán, and Guanajuato. (And yes, there is a town called Tequila.) Agave isn’t easy to grow. You must have the right desert conditions, and even then, most blue agave takes about eight years to mature. And that just gets you to harvest. If you have any desire to age your tequila, tack on some more time!

A cumin-lime vinaigrette spiked with a tiny amount of tequila adds a little something extra to this gorgeous grilled salad of peaches and fresh mozzarella cheese. As the seasons change, consider substituting heirloom tomatoes, plums, and other soft fruits for the peaches. We found traditional peaches work better in this dish than white peaches, which have more sugar and water and don't hold up as well on the grill.

chili powder 1 1/2 tablespoons tequila 1/3 cup olive oil Vegetable cooking spray 1 (6-oz.) package watercress or baby arugula, thoroughly washed 3/4-pound fresh mozzarella, cut into 16 (1/4inch) slices Garnish: fresh cilantro sprigs Peel and chop 1 peach. Cut remaining 4 peaches into 28 (1/4-inch-thick) rounds, cutting through stem and bottom ends. (Cut peaches inward from sides, cutting each side just until you reach the pit. Discard pits.) Process chopped peach, green onions, next 7 ingredients, and tequila in a food processor 10 to 15 seconds or until smooth. Add oil, and pulse 3 to 4 times or until thoroughly combined. Coat cold cooking grate of grill with cooking spray, and place on grill. Preheat grill to 350°F to 400°F (medium-high). Brush both sides of peach rounds with 1/3 cup peach dressing. Grill peach rounds, covered with grill lid, 3 to 5 minutes on each side or until grill marks appear. Arrange watercress evenly on 4 plates. Alternately layer 4 grilled peach rounds and 4 cheese slices over watercress on each plate. Top each with 3 more peach rounds. Drizzle with remaining peach dressing. Garnish, if desired.
Margarita Marinade Just like the cocktail it's named for, this easy marinade is a four-ingredient flavour explosion of tart, sweet, and salty all rolled up into one. Here it's used to jazz up chicken wings, but it works wonders for flank steak, grilled pork, and chicken thighs too.
3/4 cup tequila 3/4 cup triple sec 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt In a bowl, whisk together tequila and triple sec. Stir in lime juice and salt. Stir until salt dissolves.
Tequila Mexican Cheese Dip In this cheese dip, better known as queso fundido in Spanish, the tequila not only shines through but gives the melted cheese a luscious texture. Typical salsa ingredients (tomato, onion, chili, cilantro) mingle with the cheese, to make an unforgettable Mexican dip. This dip needs to be eaten as soon as it's made or kept warm (for a relatively short time) in a chafing dish. Don't worry, before you know it, it will be all gone! I like to accompany with homemade tortilla chips. 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large ripe tomato, cored, seeded (if you wish) and cut into 1/4-inch pieces 1 medium white onion, cut into 1/4-inch pieces Hot green chili(s) to taste, (roughly 1 large jalapeño or 2 large serrano’s), stemmed, seeded and finely chopped 3 tbsp tequila, preferably a silver tequila 8 oz Mexican melting cheese (such as Chihuahua or quesadilla) or Monterey Jack, mild cheddar or brick, shredded (you'll have about 2 cups) 1/2 cup (loosely packed) chopped cilantro (thick bottom stems cut off) Heat the oil in a large (10-inch) skillet over medium-high. Add the tomato, onion and chili(s), and cook, stirring constantly, until the onion begins to soften and brown, about 7 minutes. Add the tequila and cook, stirring, for a minute or so, until reduced to a glaze. With the skillet of tequila-infused vegetables over medium-low, sprinkle in the cheese. Stir slowly and constantly until just melted-too long over the heat and the cheese will become tough, oily and stringy. Scoop into a warm dish, sprinkle with the cilantro and serve right away with chips to dip. February Backyard Jam Local Music Showcase A Staggering Display of Local Talent One of the things I love most about live, local music is the potential for incredibly talented artists to pop up when you’re least expecting it.
You might be out for a drink one night, maybe celebrating a friend-of-a-friend’s birthday, in a bar or pub you’ve never really visited before, and suddenly, it hits you. You put down your beer and peer over a sea of heads at the band performing onstage. You’ve never seen them before – never even heard of them, if we’re being honest – but there’s something about those guitar licks, that drum fill, the bark of the singer’s vocals that has you hooked. It’s this feeling of excitement and discovery that we were hoping to capture during the first Backyard Jam Local Music Showcase, and I’d like to think that we succeeded! The evening was jam-packed with incredible homegrown talent of all different styles and stripes: from the energetic rock n’ roll of Marwood Way, to the country twang of Miles Tornberg and Sarah Beth Keeley, to the bluesy rasp of Hurricane Lisa, there was definitely something for everyone to enjoy. From the beginning of the evening to the end of it, Legends was alive with all the local musical ability that Strathmore could muster – and that turns out to be no small amount. Marwood Way led off the evening, bringing their trademark energy and youthful dynamism to the stage to start things off in the right direction. “We’ve only been together since last August, but we’ve already got 16, 17 original songs,” lead guitarist Brian Guizzo told me. “That’s a full album’s-worth of music. My group is really dedicated, and I owe them plenty for it.” Listening to Guiz-
zo talk about his band is an experience all on its own – there’s a sense of pride in his voice as he discusses all they’ve

Miles Tornberg was next up onstage, and he brought with him that signature rootsy style that should be familiar to anybody who frequents the open jam nights he hosts out at the Strathmore Green Bar under the moniker of Rodeo Miles. The polar opposite of Marwood Way on the experience spectrum, Tornberg has been playing music for decades. “It’s been awhile since I’ve played regularly,” he let me know, although you wouldn’t know it if you were judging by his skill with a six-string. “I did a little bit of playing back in the late 70’s, early 80’s, and then rodeo kind of took over my life. So, I put the guitar away for a few years, and started picking it up again about five years ago, got playing with some people here, and we’re just having fun, trying to make music.” It really was quite a singular experience, seeing the excited, unbridled energy of a group like Marwood Way juxtaposed against the sagacious experience and technique of Miles Tornberg – neither is better or preferential to the other, but there was something special about seeing such distinct, disparate genres of music being played on the same stage, one after the other. While there was plenty of other excitement that took place throughout the evening, the night was closed out by a fantastically energetic performance from Hurricane Lisa who was accompanied onstage at various points by Sarah Beth Keeley (featured in this issue’s Monthly Music Column!) and Pam Donovan. These veterans of the local music scene really brought the evening home, and capped off a phenomenal night of local talent and musical expertise. This Backyard Jam was the first concert of its kind that Legends and The Newsy Neighbour have organized and presented, but it certainly won’t be the last. Join us for the second Backyard Jam Local Music Showcase coming up on April 14 at Legends, which will be headlined by Sarah Beth Keeley just weeks before she makes her way across the Atlantic this spring for her UK tour. In a recent, national consumer survey by FindLaw.com, the topic of money came in second, tied with having and raising children, as the topic that most led to a fight among married 18- to 34-year-olds. THE POUTY PUPPY Hello Newsy Neighbour readers! I have been MIA for a couple of years. Why, you may ask? Because my life is awful. I am too depressed to write to you. I am too sad to sneak downstairs and write my story. You see, there are now TWO KIDS in my house. TWO!! Can you believe it? The little one, the boy with the high-pitched voice, is so mean to me. He gives the impression he’s giving me hugs but they are not hugs. They are death grips with choking fingers. He smiles sweetly for the camera, but he’s whispering, “Sit still, or else” in my ear. He’s terrifying. I have stopped sleeping in my parents’ room. I have slept on their bed since the day they brought me into this hell hole, then they moved me to – you’re not going to believe this – the couch. I slept fine, but I was angry so I would always sleep with my butt facing them. They said I was moved because I snored and kicked mom, but I don’t believe them. It’s a conspiracy. So eventually, I got sick of them ignoring my angering body composure and just stopped coming upstairs. They seem to be happy about it, but I know they miss me.

Probably not often enough! They are two very simple words sometimes forgotten in the rush and bustle of life, but words that should not be taken for granted! You always hear (or should hear!) people say to their children, “What do you say?” to prompt them to say “thank you” - words your children should learn to automatically say without the prompt. It should just come naturally, but that is up to the parents to teach their children gratitude. Words of appreciation will take them a long way in life. More and more these days I hear people talking about how our younger generation feel entitled and don’t seem to appreciate all the wonderful things they have in life. Specialists say it is important to make children do their chores and express thanks for their meals and other gestures, that it will teach them gratitude. I remember growing up, we gave thanks before our meal and again after to our mother for making it just for us; we even washed the dishes and put them away before we were allowed to leave the kitchen. I believe this taught me gratitude and I know I always say “thank you” to people I don’t even know for even a small gesture. As adults, whenever you enjoy a small pleasure, contemplate what life would be without it. As you go through your day, mentally label as a gift anything you might ordinarily take for granted. Don’t think of it as your morning cup of coffee or evening glass of wine – it’s a gift of coffee, the gift of wine. Download a Gratitude Journal App so you can record your thoughts anytime, anywhere. Every day, list 5 things you’re grateful for. You can set up regular reminders and a daily inspirational quote to keep you bright and sunny all day long. Teaching children to be grateful may a bit of a bigger challenge, but the sooner you start the sooner you have the ability to change your child’s life. Kids do not know how big or little your paycheque is. Kids do not understand what income tax or mortgages and credit card debit is. However, depending on their age, they do know how much a Nintendo DS game cartridge costs. They know how much a Wii costs. Or, a slice of pizza or a bottle of Gatorade. This is their vocabulary—their understanding of values in our material world. We can work with that. And to get our kids to understand the meaning of gratitude, we must. The two areas that probably are the most important are food and play: With food, kids nowadays tend to be horribly picky and wasteful (when I was a kid, we ate what was put in front of us and we liked it). Among them, as Roberts terms them, “multi-causal factors that have contributed to the decline in children being involved in meal preparation and clean up” are: changes in agriculture making it easier for restaurants to sell food cheaply, the increase in convenience stores, and more women at work. “People eat out much more often,” she said, so kids are not eating what’s available, they are ordering what they want. Roberts actually tells families that even if they go out to restaurants, the parents should still order the food for the child. “We have to put the parents back in charge of food. Right now, it’s the children who are in charge so, of course, they’re going to eat gummy bears and goldfish crackers.” Long ago, Roberts reminds, children even caught their family’s food. (theeatlantic.com) Teaching children to be grateful for their toys may even be a bigger challenge because they just have so many. I remember getting mittens, a jewelry box (which I still have) and a sewing kit for Christmas and I was thrilled! Oh yes and a mouse trap game. I must confess, I was as guilty as most with my own children, giving them way too much growing up and I have a picture of our front room practically filled to the hall with toys, so I really don’t have room to talk, but I’m thinking I would have done it differently if given the chance again. As parents, despite wanting to give our kids everything, one of the greatest gifts we can give is to literally give less, to force decision-making and awareness among all their choices. It’s not easy to watch your kids struggle—but in the end, it does breed gratitude. And there is no question that these lessons are most effective if you start early and consistently through every child’s primary stage. I’m extremely glad my days of raising a family are behind me;

It was a good six months until I was able to perform it without breaking down.” Keeley also performed a handful of additional songs that night, and they were barn-burners to be sure – full of astonishing energy, extraordinary musicianship, and burgeoning talent just aching to be let loose. To provide a bit of background, Keeley is no stranger to the music business. With two full-length albums under her belt, SBK has also opened for and played alongside acts such as Rascal Flatts, Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, and more. Following one particularly fantastic set, country music legend Neal McCoy took some time before starting his show to give a shout-out to Keeley, letting everyone know how impressed he was with her performance, and that she was definitely an artist worth paying attention to. “It was pretty much the highlight of my career up to that point!” Keeley enthused, while telling me about the moment. As she was poised on the cusp of stardom, however, life got the in the way, as it often does. “I played all these shows, and I was getting watched by labels, but my life was in a bit of chaos.” Keeley reflected. “I parted ways in my marriage, I parted ways with my management, I was in a bad contract. But that was all years ago. Now, I’m releasing a new single, getting ready to head out on tour…it’s all pretty exciting. SBK is back!” The tour that Keeley mentioned there isn’t just a quick jaunt around southern Alberta, either. This May, she’s heading all the way across the Atlantic to play the Vamos Music Festival in Perth, Scotland, where she’ll be sharing her brand of country music on the main stage, during the show’s primetime slot on Saturday evening. She’ll also be playing another half-dozen concerts across the pond, all in support of a new single that should help to build excitement for her upcoming album to a fever-pitch, both in Europe and back here in Canada. It goes without saying that this tour is a big deal, and really, truly marks the return of SBK to the country music scene she loves so much. “Everybody’s got a story,” she told me. “Mine might be a bit different. I’m a bit of a more seasoned artist. I play high-energy shows with incredibly talented musicians, and I can’t imagine devoting my time or energy towards anything else. I’d love to show women that you don’t have to stop following your dreams – I started at 28! I want my story to be inspiring to women of all ages, that you can really do it, if you want to.” I don’t think many would argue that Keeley’s story is anything short of inspirational – and she’s clearly only just getting started! blast, and I think it’s safe to say that everyone had a great time – both bands and audience members alike. I thoroughly enjoyed taking in all of the acts that made their way across the stage that night, but there was one artist that really struck a chord with me (see what I did there?) amongst an evening full of truly stand-out musicians. It was during a performance near the end of the night, when Sarah Beth Keeley (or SBK, as she’s known by her fans) was invited onstage to perform a song or two. The ballad that Keeley delivered when she stepped up to the mic left me with chills: a song about heartache and loss, grief and remembrance, accompanied beautifully by Keeley’s mournful guitar and longing timbre. I hadn’t expected to hear anything quite like it in such an incidental fashion as the evening closed out, and I let her know as much when I had the opportunity to chat with her later on. “It’s called How Much Time – that’s the ballad that I sang that night. It’s about my personal life, and some things that I’d been going through for the last couple of years,” she confided to me. “I went to Nashville, I was doing a showcase there. I also did some writing with a friend, Ron McNeill. He was sort of my chauffer while I was there for the week. We broke out into this writing session, and it was probably the most emotional writing session I’ve ever been a part of. He pushed a lot of emotion out of me, and it was very therapeutic, and I ended up writing what I think is one of the best

Should Calgary Bid?
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman strutted through Southern Alberta last month and insulted Calgarians saying the Saddledome is an "antiquated, inefficient building" that "doesn't hold a candle to new arena's like Edmonton's Rogers Place." The New York lawyer proclaimed Calgary needs a new arena "yesterday." Comments like this is why I try to avoid the commissioner like the plague. Bettman doesn't speak for Calgarians or Albertans, he speaks for 31 wealthy NHL owners and Calgary owner (Murray Edwards) who doesn't even live in the city anymore. Is the NHL going to pay for the new building, Gary? How about you, Mr. Edwards? It was very clear from callers to my radio show that a new downtown Entertainment Center would be a welcome addition, however the majority do not want tax dollars to pay it. Calgary Mayor Naheed Neshi took it one step further. “It’s both vital and important according to Mr. Bettman,” Nenshi said. “You know, we have many things that are vitally important. We are in an economic downturn; a lot of people don’t know where their next meal is coming from. I’ve got a lot of priorities to work with. Public money must be spent for public benefit.” The arena debate highlights even a bigger issue that could soon be facing Calgary and Southern Alberta. Should Calgary bid on the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games? The Calgary Bid Exploration Committee is currently working on a master plan that

it will present to the city in July. The mandate of the committee is to evaluate whether an Olympic bid is feasible, prudent or even realistic. The 2026 Calgary Olympic Master Plan must have transparency and detail a lasting legacy for our venues, economic opportunity, sport development, social development and cultural enrichment. Obviously, this will come with a huge price tag! VANOC president John Furlong tried to spin a balanced budget for the 2010 Games in Vancouver and Whistler. Maybe this was the case if you don't include the 2.1 billion dollars spent on the sky train from the airport to downtown, 2 billion on the sea to sky highway to Whistler, 883 million on the convention center, 663 million on the False Creek athletes’ village and almost 1 billion on security. In most cases (everything except security) this was money well spent with a lasting legacy for Vancouver and Whistler. If Calgary does move forward with a 2026 bid, do we do it on the cheap? Or do we do it with a vision for a lasting legacy? This comes with a cost! Who wouldn't want to see a train from the airport to downtown? You know our mayor would love to speed up construction of the green line LRT and a new athletes’ village would double down as affordable low cost housing after the games. Sooner or later, there will be a new arena project on the table, we may as well do this in conjunction with an Olympic bid. We also have aging Olympic facilities and if we want our legacy to continue as a leader in winter sport development, these facilities are going to need major upgrades. Either that or we are going to have to shut them down. In my opinion, there are three key threats when it comes to hosting the 2026 games. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

1. Will our National Park be receptive to hosting the Alpine events at the Lake Louise Ski Resort? While Nakiska can be used for ski cross, boarder cross events and maybe slalom events, Mount Allen was a terrible choice and a huge waste of money for the alpine events in 1988. If the Park says no, then we may as well stop discussion right now. 2. Are we really going to spend millions on a temporary Ski Jump facility? The Canmore Nordic Center is still a world class facility for Biathlon and Cross Country events but the jumps at Winsport are obsolete. There are lots of rumours on where this temporary facility would be built including the hill on the SAIT campus. 3. Security Costs. While former police chief Rick Hanson may have a few ideas on how to save in this department, this will be a huge number that will be tough to stomach. Speculation says the cost could close in on 1 billion dollars. Costs like this are why most democratic countries are steering clear of the Games. Countries like Russia, Korea and China don't have to be accountable to their tax payers. I did have a great suggestion from one of my listeners on Sportstalk on Newstalk 770. Why not pass some the security costs on to all competing nations? The host nation would pay the biggest tab but some costs could be shared by competing countries.
Could a 5-billion-dollar price tag be just the starting point? Will all 3 levels of government be on side? There is a reason why countries like Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, France and Poland have all backed away from potential bids. Russia in 2014, Korea in 2018, Beijing in 2022. Does the IOC really want to go to Kazakhstan for 2026? I think not, but there may not be any other options. The costs of hosting an Olympics is getting out of hand.

In the last few years, our online lives have become so overly crowded with weight loss plans, diets, fitness regimes and the next best thing for “lifestyle changes”. I am unable to open my Facebook without reading a “join today” welcome into the latest program to look my best. I am all for home based businesses, as I own two of them myself, but there are ways to ensure that your home-based weight loss or fitness business like: Xyngular, Beach Body or Isagenix are able to secure a higher rate of engagement outside of your friends circle.
Here is my lean recipe to starting a home-based business in the health sector through Facebook (without irritating your dear friends): Create a Facebook page with the page type: brand or product and the category: health and beauty. I suggest creating a page separate from your profile on Facebook. This gives your friends the opportunity to opt in or opt out of receiving your business posts. Unfortunately, there is a disturbance in the force, and it is not with me right now. I never go anywhere without the force. Skywalker strongly advises against it. 5. Harper is coming over tonight for some tea and crumpets. At least that is what his text stated. And like they say, never ditch the Prime Minister; he likes his tea time! 6. My hamster needs a good washing! He was playing with the pigs in the mud today. Silly hamster! 7. I need to double check all of the expiration dates on my milk. You can never be too sure. And I love my Cheerios in the morning! 8. Sorry, but I can't do anything for the next few hours. I am allowing my food to digest. You can never play it too safe! 9. Did you know that at any given time at any moment in your life you are been sent EMR’s? Sorry to say they are not some magical pow-
ers from above; no, they are electromagnetic waves. If you are sitting in front of your computer screen, talking on you cell phone, using your microwave, using your blender or toaster, pretty much everything we do every single day produces EMR’s. The vibration of an electric charge creates electromagnetic waves. This is where it gets interesting and perhaps a bit confusing, with the exception of you geniuses out there. In the quantum theory of electromagnetism, EMR’s consists of photons, the elementary particles responsible for all electromagnetic interactions. Quantum effects provide additional sources of EMR, such as the transition of electrons to lower energy levels in an atom and black-body radiation. These radiations have the ability to cause chemical reactions and damage living cells beyond that resulting from simple heating, and can be a health hazard.
When you listen to the radio, watch TV, or cook dinner in a microwave oven, you are using electromagnetic waves. Radio waves, television waves, and microwaves are all types of electromagnetic waves. The electromagnetic spectrum describes a wide range of different electromagnetic waves. Also, called EM waves, these are a special type of wave that can travel without a medium. Many studies have revealed a link between the use of these types of technological devices and various forms of illness, including tumors and infertility. The evidence is simply too prevalent to deny. The bad news is that this is pretty much a fact of life for all of us and I am starting to feel like a bit of a fanatic even writing this article but Wi-Fi is convenient but many have raised doubts concerning the safety of unseen forces that permeate everything around us. Since the introduction of Wi-Fi in 1997, researchers have performed dozens of studies to explore the subject. The results are clear and shocking, Wi-fi can negatively affect overall health and brain health, especially in children. Perhaps most shocking is that this information is not new or even that controversial. In fact, in 2008 the well-renowned publication Scientific American ran a piece called “Mind Control by Cell Phone” which explained the danger Wi-Fi has on the human brain. The good news is that you can protect yourself from Electromagnetic Radiation. First, try to limit direct contact with electronics whenever possible; if you can take a break from them, you should do so. You should shut off as many electronic devices as you can at night (not just put them into sleep or hibernate mode), such as your laptop, your tablet, your phone, and any other wireless transmitting/emitting device. Don’t forget to unplug your wireless router. If you have all your electronics off but still have your wireless router on, you can still experience the negative effects of Electromagnetic Radiation. Second, be aware of sources of Electromagnetic Radiation in your environment. Try heading to a coffee shop that doesn’t have a Wi-Fi signal. Talk to your Internet provider about using Ethernet cords to connect laptops to the Internet instead of using a Wi-Fi
wireless router. Limit cell phone conversations to decrease how often you have your cell phone within close proximity to you. Know that you likely won’t be able to get completely away from Electromagnetic Radiation, but the less exposure you have to it the better. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. "Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello." I never forgot that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

2. Second Important Lesson - "Pickup in the Rain."

One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but asked him to write down his address on a piece of paper. She thanked him, and several days later came a knock on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console colour TV was delivered to his home. A note was attached. It read: "Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away. 3. Third Important Lesson - "Remember Those Who Serve." In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-yearold boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked. "50¢," replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. "Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. "35¢!" she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left.

When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.
4. Fourth Important Lesson - "The Obstacles in Our Path." In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand - "Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition."
5. Fifth Important Lesson - "Giving When It Counts." Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year-old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the colour returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?". Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Hello Newsy Neighbour Readers! This month’s issue on health and fitness is such an excellent idea as we head into spring. We will take off the hockey skates, skis and snowshoes, put away the parkas (and hopefully the snow shovels!) and pull out our sweats and runners and spend a few more hours outside enjoying slightly warmer days. Wellness and health are terms that are used in combination quite often, and we all know we need it, we crave good heath, we aim for wellness, and we try to exercise in a busy world that does not always accommodate these very important things. Being healthy does not only mean not being sick. I know for me, sleep is a major problem, and for those of you who know me, I have a lot of energy and really fail at shutting things down. That is a huge part of wellness and personally where I need the most work. I used to wear the fact that I didn’t sleep as a badge of honour, but as I age, and wisdom prevails, I know not sleeping enough is a real problem, and will require a little work on my part. Good sleep, eating well, and some good old fashioned exercise is not only the mantra we should aim for, but all of these things in some combination promote good relationships, emotional stability, spirituality, strong intuition, the ability to adapt on the fly, to love, and to think with more clarity. These things, in my opinion, lead to a beautiful existence even in the most trying of times. Pain, whether physical or mental, is a constant challenge so we need to use these tools to change our lifestyles. Sounds easy huh? Nope! It takes practice, patience, and prioritizing. This is way easier said than done, but I try not to beat myself up when I am unable to fulfill my own goals in this respect.
My number 1 priority is my family. I am completely in love with my husband and my kids, and that love empowers every decision I make, and especially my reasons for staying healthy in both mind and body. Our health is not just a way of life, in my opinion it is an attitude. One that seeks joy even in the most mundane things, and even through the tears of pain and devastation, we know that we will come through because we are worthy of happiness and health. Our intellectual brains are telling us this, but our emotional brains do not always make the connection and that is ok. Or it will be. In my life, like many of you, I have experienced extreme joy, and huge loss. Both extremes have always brought me to a place where I may not be able to ever truly recover from the losses, but I can allow myself to feel it, acknowledge it and move through the pain. Some pain will never completely heal, but we have to find reasons to take good care of ourselves. I do this by walking, by eating beautiful fresh vegetables, and my chocolate: Kraft dinner! I write songs and play music, hug everyone I meet, and kiss my nieces and nephews until they beg me to stop. Life is precious and goes by in the blink of an eye! I absolutely love to walk. It is easy, and goal oriented. In Edmonton during a session, I walk everywhere. It clears my head, and provides me with perspective and a few moments away from the rigors of session. I look for any reason to walk, and I breathe deep, I take in my surroundings, and then I jump back into life. It is part of my way of thanking my body and mind for another day of over use. Be kind to yourself, and know that you are worth the time and commitment to yourself to do these things. As always we love to hear from you.

BROCCOLI SALAD This may be the easiest and most delicious salad I make. All my children love it and when I take it anywhere, it is an instant hit. And, talk about GOOD for you. In fact, the odds of you being born are incredibly small - basically zero, according to calculations offered by Dr. Ali Benazir. Knowing an original is worth far more than a copy, it is important to be our authentic self wherever we are. Authenticity is not something we have or don't have. It is a conscious choice made regarding how we want to show up in life. Doing so consistently takes practice and commitment.
Choosing How You Show Up Do you want to live inside a box or get out to dance on the lid or perhaps a bit farther afield? The choice is yours. We get to choose how we show up or if we show up at all. Committing to authenticity enables others to know you - what excites you, makes you happy or makes you sad. It provides an avenue to build bridges and make real connections. This is important for establishing long-term relationships and creating win-win-win scenarios for yourself, your business and your community. An opinion circulating for years portrays civil servants as bureaucrats offering technical objectivity, while failing to connect on a human level. For many in the public, they often exist behind faceless anonymity. Individual expectations of the service(s) provided differ greatly depending on the hat worn (citizen, business owner, entrepreneur, councillor, administrator). Perception paints them lacking authentic understanding of the needs and issues facing the public. Policy and guidelines lead to differing interpretations of their roles and ensuing interactions with the public. I experienced marginal exchanges with elected officials and civil

servants until approximately 10 years ago when I began doing public consultation. This provided me an opportunity to connect and recognize a commitment by some individuals to build a stronger, better community. My experience is that not all elected officials or bureaucrats show as their authentic selves. At times, party politics or policy hinders this. Other times, individuals lack the people skills (soft skills) enabling them to be real during exchanges. This leads to failure in establishing good working relationships with the public and/or their associates. Many remain unaware of their own ability to create success not only for themselves but also for others.
"Whether you think you can or you can't - you're right." - Henry Ford Self-reflection increases awareness. This allows us to understand the choices we are making about who and what we are and who or what we want to be in the future. It creates an opportunity to change them. Why do we fail to change if we recognize it as beneficial to our success, both personally and professionally? Perhaps because of the stories we are telling ourselves. We remain the single greatest influence for our own success. Being authentic, not thinking about what or how to be, increases your ability to hear and identify underlying issues and address "real" concerns. It is the beginning of building trust, which is needed globally in public interactions with elected officials and bureaucrats. Repeatedly saying, "Trust me" does not establish trust. Neither does the phrase, "Believe me." Trust is belief without religion. Trust is looking at someone and knowing and then feeling they have your best interests at heart. Imagine the difference moving forward if elected officials and bureaucrats connected authentically without agendas aligning integrity and actions.
Actions Speak Louder than Words Increasingly, companies express points of view on current cultural or political issues. According to a 2014 study, around 75% of millennials believe businesses should share a point of view about issues and influence others to get involved in an issue. But people, especially younger people, can smell fakeness a mile away – and they aren’t afraid to call anyone out on it. If a business The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

develops and expresses such views, it must follow through on that point of view in a real, authentic way. Audi highlighted gender equality in a 2016 commercial. To build trusting relationships with their audience, they need to commit to demonstrating how it works within their organization. Being authentic is also important for politicians and political parties. Providing critical commentary but failing to demonstrate the ability to provide a viable alternative does not establish relationships or trust in a system increasingly under attack. Instead of creating news, it is important they begin to understand the "real" concerns of the public, which are as unique and diverse one as each of us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly to him. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? That guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!” This is when my Taxi driver taught me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck.” He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of Garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment, they are playing the victim and letting it get the best of them. As their Garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. He said, “Don’t take it personally.” Just smile, wave, wish them well and move on!! Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that stress free people do not let garbage trucks take over their day! Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, life is too short to be stressed all the time, find a way to find your peace, love the people who treat your right, pray for the ones that don’t. The compilation of longer days, shorter nights, more rays of sunshine and an increasing list of to-dos as you plan for home, yard and garden projects— not to mention the thoughts of summer loving plans of backyard fires and BBQs with friends and family— I am sure you are like me and can’t help but be excited for the season change!

Spring brings all kinds of changes everywhere you look, even in things we don’t have to touch - from the budding trees, the greening grass and the tulips that start to peak through the dirt and the sounds of the birds. Everything naturally feels freshened up! Often providing motivation to modify and adjust, make changes in your home, garage and yard and maybe even make some changes to yourself as well! Whatever spring brings your way, make sure you are looking within — ask yourself what held you back through the winter? Was it a closet full of too many unworn clothes? Was it a dingy dated bathroom? Was it an unused treadmill that serves as a coat rack for most of the winter months? Was it too small of a space – is it time to move up? Were there rooms you did not even go in during the winter months – is time for a downsize? Don’t fret and feel overwhelmed by these questions. Just remember, it is never too late to start a new project either for your home or for yourself. A great philosophy to stay on track is to "write it down and make it happen". It is so rewarding to look back at the list as the days, weeks and months go on to see all the things that you have checked off your list! Celebrate each accomplishment. Spring is a fabulous time to set new goals, start a journal, clean closet, wash walls, as well as tackle outdoor projects, move things around or repurpose furniture, get a gym membership or simply go for a walk. The more you love what you are surrounded by, the more motivated you will be to try a new recipe, walk a different route, try a different golf course, a whole new sport, or project. Season changes always fills the local groceries store with new variations of fruits and vegetables, inspiration can be anywhere you look— don’t be afraid to try something simple as a new salad mix! I am sure it will be something that would pair perfectly with anything fresh off the grill. And with all that being said, maybe there’s not a darn thing bugging you… you are just simply thankful it is not -30°C anymore! But at any rate, get out, get active and love where you live! BANKS COME UNDER FIRE For years, the Banks have always been the institution that consumers have gone to for financial products and services. It used
to be, back in the day, that everyone from the tellers to the loans officer and even the branch manager knew many of their customers by name. Those days may be long behind us for the foreseeable future. The banks are feeling intense pressure from investors and stock holders to continue increasing the bottom line…but at what cost? In light of the recent allegations by employees working for five of the major Banks, I feel it is important to bring attention to what I do for my clients as a mortgage broker, and dispel any possible negative thoughts, misconceptions or assumptions about the sales process in this industry. Starting in April, Canada’s financial consumer watchdog will be implementing a review of the banks’ business practices. According to a report by CBC, employees from five of Canada’s biggest Banks allege that they have felt pressured to upsell, trick and even lie to customers to meet sales targets. They go on to admit to signing up existing and new clients for products and services without their knowledge and consent. Perhaps this may be part of the reason why it appears that there is so much staff turnover within the banks these days. As a mortgage professional in good standing with RECA (Real Estate Council of Alberta), AMBA (Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association) and MPC (Mortgage Professionals Canada), I am mandated to present my clients and have them authorize a consent form that outlines what my role and responsibilities are, how I am compensated, as well as privacy and disclosure practices. As a dedicated mortgage specialist, with a financial planning designation, my mission statement is simple…finding my clients the mortgage financing option that best suites them and their situation, and doing so in a clear, convenient and professional manner. While my clients always have the choice of which chartered bank or financial institution they want me to work with on their behalf, more often than not, they choose a “mono-line” lender for various reasons. For those not familiar with this term, a mono-line lender only offers one financial product…mortgages. THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR THYROID Even though it only weighs an ounce, your thyroid is a powerful little gland. It sits in the front portion of your lower neck and releases hormones like triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) into your bloodstream. These hormones then travel to your cells to give them energy, and the energy is used to support several of your body's regular functions. 1. It regulates your metabolism

Hashimoto's Disease, an auto immune disorder, can attack thyroid cells and lead to hypothyroidism, as can certain medications like amiodarone, interferon alpha, lithium and interleukin-2. In other cases, hypothyroidism might just be something you were born with. It can be caused by thyroid surgery or radiation treatments. Thyroid inflammation is another credited source of hypothyroidism, developing from an infection or after giving birth.
3. It can be treated if irregular
The most important thyroid takeaway point is that you can be treated if you do develop hypothyroidism. Synthetic thyroxine imitates the T4 that your thyroid makes and can be used to treat hypothyroidism. Experts cite this as a successful drug in treating the condition when the correct dosage is taken (as determined by your age, weight, level of hypothyroidism and other factors). If prescribed the treatment, you will go through TSH levels testing about two months after you start taking the hormone. Any adjustments to your dosage will be made by your doctor at this time, and subsequent tests will occur until the dose is just right. As a result, your hypothyroidism will be controlled and the negative symptoms will decrease.

Many myths get passed from person to person and stick around long after they've been proven false. These are 10 myths that are still regularly repeated that have no basis in fact.
1. Dogs see in black and white.

This popular myth has some basis in fact, as dogs can't see the full spectrum of colors which humans perceive. However, they can see colors, just not as many as their owners do.
2. Eating rice kills birds.

Throwing rice at weddings is an old tradition that is now out of fashion, and many people suppose the reason is that rice swells in birds' stomachs and can lead to their death. The truth behind the decline in marital rice-throwing is just the opposite; throwing rice at weddings attracts birds, who make a mess in the churchyard or outside the wedding hall. Hungry birds are a major problem for rice farmers.

Eating chewing isn't generally a good idea, but it's complete nonsense that it stays in your stomach for any longer than anything else you might eat. The human stomach isn't able to digest chewing gum, but just like seeds, chewing gum passes quickly through the body if swallowed.
4. Blood is blue inside the body.

5. Leaving a fan on overnight can kill you. This myth isn't commonly believed outside Korea, but many people there have believed for years that living a fan on at night can result in sudden death. A possible origin of this myth may be electrical fires caused by fans in the past. A darker suggestion is that the myth started as an alternative explanation for suicides. Wherever it comes from, it simply isn't true that leaving a fan on overnight can kill you.

6. Lightning never strikes the same place twice.

This is an odd old believe that can be instantly disproved by looking at the top of any really tall building. Why would people bother putting lightning rods at the top of skyscrapers if they were only ever going to be used once?
7. Bees break the laws of physics. In the 1930s, French scientists found that typical models for explaining animal flight couldn't explain how bumblebees fly. However, since at least the 1990s, scientists have been able to explain how the rapid movement of bumblebees' wings create vortices which allow them to fly. This hasn't stopped some people believing this myth until the present day.
8. Left-brained people are logical and right-brained people are creative. This sounds like it might be scientific, but it really isn't. Different areas of the brain are associated with different types of brain functioning, but there is no truth at all to the idea that some people have greater activity in one-half of the brain than the other, and that this is correlated with how logical or creative that person is.
9. Bats can't see. Bats famously navigate using echolocation, making sounds to find their way in the dark. This unique ability has led to the popular myth that bats are completely blind. That isn't true; they don't have very strong eyesight, but they definitely aren't blind.
10. The Great Wall of China is the only man-made object visible from space.
