The other common thread is that it actually is August already!! Don’t make that face, be optimistic. And don’t be sad that summer is half over--there is still a month left to enjoy every moment of every day of August because, remember, this day will never return. If you follow numerology at all you will be well aware that August is the month for inspiration and personal growth, creating perspective, art, intuition, music, new adventures, overall finding flow and change in your life. And that brings me to one of my favorite articles on page 48, “How to Perk up your Homes Exterior” in just one weekend. I love every single idea in this article and I can see my home will be getting a little face-lift.

Think of water as the “grease” in your body that helps every simple function work effectively, from your heart to your bowel movements. Without proper hydration, these things can slow down and grind to an uncomfortable stop. It is also important to remember that dehydration can influence your cognitive abilities, and even mild levels can disrupt mood, concentration, alertness, and short term memory. Nothing makes you feel old like arthritic joints and a failing memory, so you can begin to appreciate the importance of proper hydration.

Now, the simplest way to fix this is not necessarily to drink more water, but rather, drink BETTER water. If you consume tap water, poorly filtered water, or water from plastic bottles, you are not being properly hydrated. It was addressed, 'Dad.' With the worst premonition and trembling hands, he opened the envelope and read the letter. ‘Dear, Dad. It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend, because I wanted to avoid a scene with Mom and you. ‘I've been finding real passion with Stacy; she is so nice, but I knew you would not approve of her, because of all her piercings, tattoos, her tight motorcycle clothes, and because she is so much older than I am. ‘But it's not only the passion, Dad. She's pregnant. Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods, and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children. ‘Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone. We'll be growing it for ourselves, and trading it with the other people in the commune, for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. ‘In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS, so Stacy can get better. I remember the good old days when I had to pack lunches every day for my kids. It’s hard to be

I know the prospect of another year of packing hundreds of lunch bags can make you crazy? Make these the night before for supper and kill two birds with one stone! Bring on the new school year!
Pizza Muffins
These calcium-rich muffins freeze well, can be packed in a lunch box straight from the freezer and will thaw by recess 2 cups (500 mL) all-purpose flour ¼ cup (50 mL) granulated sugar 1 tbsp (15 mL) baking powder 1 tsp (5 mL) each salt and dried basil ½ tsp (2 mL) baking soda 1 cup (250 mL) tiny cubes old orange cheddar 1 cup (250 mL) plain yogurt 2 eggs ¼ cup (50 mL) butter, melted ½ cup (125 mL) finely chopped red or green sweet pepper (optional) ¼ cup (50 mL) pizza sauce ½ cup (125 mL) shredded mozzarella Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line 12 muffin cups with paper liners. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, basil and baking soda until combined. Stir in cheddar cubes. In a medium bowl, whisk together yogurt, eggs and butter until smooth. Stir into flour mixture just until well combined and no dry spots remain; stir in sweet pepper (batter will be very thick). Spoon batter into muffin cups, dividing evenly. Spoon 1 tsp (5 mL) pizza sauce on top of each muffin; sprinkle each with shredded mozzarella. Bake about 20 minutes, until golden and a toothpick inserted in centre of one of middle muffins comes out clean. Let muffins cool in pan at least 5 minutes before removing, and then let cool completely on a wire rack. (Freeze muffins in an airtight container for up to 1 month; defrost at room temperature.)

Scrambled Egg “Cupcakes”
You can vary these wholesome, bite-size snacks by adding your child's favourite veggies to the mix. 1/4 cup (50 mL) frozen corn 3 eggs 1/3 cup (75 mL) grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup (50 mL) milk 1/4 cup (50 mL) diced cooked ham 1 tbsp (15 mL) very thinly sliced green onion (optional) Paprika Spread corn out on paper towels to thaw and dry completely. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Spray a 12-cup mini muffin pan with non-stick cooking spray or brush well with oil. In a 2-cup (500-mL) glass measure, whisk together eggs, cheese and milk. Pour egg mixture into muffin cups, dividing evenly. Sprinkle corn and ham into each cup, dividing evenly; sprinkle each with green onion and very lightly with paprika. Bake about 13 minutes until set. Remove from oven and let stand 5 minutes. Run a knife around edges of muffin cups; using a small spoon, carefully scoop out each cupcake. And Here Are 24 Really Great Lunch Ideas. 1. An “I love you” note from Mom or Dad or both. Oh, yes, they do want one. 2. Turkey wrap with mayo, dried cranberries, grated swiss or gouda. 3. Cheese and crackers – in the same shape to make mini sandwiches, plus strawberries. 4. Tomato soup with grated cheese for sprinkling, plus goldfish crackers for swimming. 5. Cream cheese and jam sandwich – a school-friendly twist on the classic PB&J. Add an apple for crunch. 6. Red and orange peppers, crackers and string cheese. 7. A silly joke to share. 8. Pita bread with their favourite filling… meat, grated veggies, grated cheese, etc. 9. Homemade fruit salad, with buttered buns and rolls of turkey on the side. 10. Leftover homemade soup, meatballs, lasagne - anything they eat well for supper often can be taken in a thermos. 11. Bright stickers, especially ones with cheery or silly messages on them. 12. Waffles cut into fingers, with yogurt for dipping. 13. Mini pizzas, especially if made by kids with toppings they like or let them top their own. 14. Leftover steamed veggies tossed with pasta. 15. A sparkly new pencil, already sharpened and ready to use. 16. Buy partially baked bread sticks, sprinkle with olive oil and parmesan, and finish baking. Save any leftovers and send them with pizza sauce. Add grapes. 17. Bagel with cream cheese, send with apple slices. 18. Crunchy salad – any combo of raw veggies they’ll eat, skip lettuce if they prefer others. Add a buttered bun and a few slices of good cheese. 19. Carrots and hummus, with good bread for dipping. 20. Leftover grilled chicken breast – cut it up and let them add to a wrap or salad, or make a chicken salad to add to a sandwich or pita. 21. Cut up a bagel into chunks; send with a container of stirred cream cheese for dipping. 22. Homemade muffins: try raisin, carrot, cheese, anything with whole wheat flour so it can act as part of lunch instead of dessert. Add a tin of canned fruit (look for selections packed in water). 23. Anything your child has mentioned that their friends had that looked appealing. Never underestimate the power of peer encouragement! 24. Add a way to clean hands! Sometimes kids don’t like sticky hands, and that orange just looks like too much work. Slice it up, add napkins or wipes. References:

Fidgeting can make you smarter, too. In 2013, researchers published findings in "Frontiers of Psychology" that students who fidgeted more during lectures actually retained more information than their stoic peers. The team suggested that the reason for this was related to stress. The more time students spent in lecture, the higher their stress levels. Earlier studies indicated that some people relieve stress through fidgeting. While not universally the case, stress-induced fidgeting appeared to varying degrees across the board.
Are Figet Spinners Healthy? Fidget spinners are having a moment. You may have seen them at toy stores or on YouTube--they are those handheld gizmos that look like something from an 80s sci-fi series. They are usually designed to spin (hence the name), pop, buzz, and have a variety of textures on their different sides. Producers and retailers claim that the futuristic gadgets can help relieve symptoms of cognitive conditions from ADHD to post-traumatic stress disorder. Given their complicated tactile nature, fidget spinners are clearly designed to appeal to kids. That has led to them being banned in schools. The question remains, however: are fidget spinners good for you?
Don't rush out and pick up a box of spinning doodads just yet, though. Other research has shown a mixed relationship between health and fidgeting. A survey out of Hong Kong, for instance, showed that those with the healthiest diet and exercise habits were the least likely to fidget. Bodyweight was associated with fidgeting on both the low and high ends of the survey. That could mean people who are suffering from other health problems that cause them to become underweight or overweight also tended to fidget as a result of their troubles.
There is no science to back up the assertions made by manufacturers. While fidgeting as a topic has received some attention from psychologists and fitness experts, the toys themselves haven't been around long enough for peer-reviewed, controlled studies. That said, there is a fair amount of evidence that people who can't sit still may actually be better off. A 2008 review of literature related to so-called "spontaneous physical activity" found that fidgeting was inversely correlated with bodyweight. In other words, the more you wiggle, the less you jiggle.

In the end, the current information about fidgeting and wellness is limited. Moving around during the day is undoubtedly a good idea, but it's too early to say for sure that fidget spinners are anything more than a passing fad. That said, they certainly aren't causing any harm other than perhaps being a nuisance in the classroom. So play with that whirring whats it if you're having fun, but don't buy into the hype that it's going to cure what ails you. Author Drmiracle

Just Declutter: Simplify Back-to-School Shopping and Buy on a Budget It’s not very often you hear a professional organizer say, “Buy in Bulk!” but when it comes to buying school supplies, more is less. Find a designated school supply area within your house. A great example is a shoe box (shoe boxes are essentially free!), put up on the shelf in your office closet labeled “school supplies”. Don’t stress out about having to get everything on the supply list for day one, instead send the kids to school with a small note pad and a pencil. A lot of teachers will provide a list of supplies specific to their classroom on the first day. Wait until after school starts to buy supplies.
Most stores will have school supplies on clearance after school starts, which means you can save on great deals! Buy extras of what is on your child’s list and put the extras in your shoe box for items needed throughout the year, as well as next year. This will not only save you money but also save you a lot of time for the following year as well as when your child is doing homework and says he needs those pencil crayons *tonight* for a project due tomorrow. Wouldn’t it be nicer to just go to the supply closet than to have to stop what you are doing to go to the store and pay full price? When my two children were in elementary school, I bought four years worth of supplies (an extra year per child), which ended up costing me only $7 of supplies per child per year. I saved even more by gathering the supplies not used at the end of the school year and putting them in my box for future use. Bought too many school supplies and now your child is out of school? The Beautiful Scars Helping to Build a Community of Music
Music has always been one of the most formative and influential forces in my life. Music has helped me grow into the person I am today, but it’s also played a much larger role in my life. I’ve made the friends I have, done the things I’ve accomplished, and live the life I do largely because of the impact song and rhythm has had on my life. Never has this been clearer to me than during one evening spent this summer with local band The Beautiful Scars.
It was a warm evening in July – warm being an understatement, actually, as this particular night came on the heels of a +30°C day – when I drove out to Strathmore. Arm resting outside the window, dry heat blowing and swirling around inside my car, prairie scenery whipping by, I was heading out to meet up with The Beautiful Scars. A three-piece consisting of Kevin Knopf on guitar, Kurt Rock on drums, and Darren Genoves on bass, The Beautiful Scars haven’t been around for a very long time. However, like myself, each member of the band was drawn together through a mutual love of music and song: Knopf and Genoves met through a mutual friend and started playing music together thanks to some guitars hanging on a wall, while Rock was added to the mix later on through the recommendation of a friend due to his prowess behind the drum kit. Ultimately, then, The Beautiful Scars came to be thanks to the exact same force that has been so influential in my life throughout the years – the power and community of music. This evening was going to be a bit of a special one, however, because I wasn’t headed out to a bar or venue to see The Beautiful Scars perform. Rather, I had been invited to their private gig space, for a front-row view as the band worked out their set for their upcoming Battle of the Bands performance at Legends on August 3. To speak to the power that music has to bring people together, it was actually at an earlier Battle of the Bands showcase that Knopf had invited The Newsy Neighbour to come and check out the practice that night in the infamous Popcorn Studios – so-named for the time it had once served as a private residential screening room, complete with old-school popcorn popper and theatre seating! As I made myself comfortable in one of the plush, multiplex-style chairs, Knopf, Rock, and Genoves got set up and joked back and forth with one another before playing a set so tight and well-rehearsed that it seemed more like an on-stage performance than a casual band practice with an audience of one. It was clear that while The Beautiful Scars have only been together a short time now, each member brought both immeasurable amounts of talent and decades of experience to the table. The bass lines punched and snapped as Genoves walked up

and down the neck of his instrument; Rock’s hooky drum fills burst from the nooks and crannies of every song; and Knopf’s lyricism and guitar work were nothing short of electrifying. No two songs were alike, but each riff and lyric fit within the bigger sound of The Beautiful Scars with unquestionable authenticity – a difficult feat to achieve, that. It was an incredible treat to experience such an up-close and intimate look at the inner workings of a local band, and I humbly thank The Beautiful Scars for the opportunity and invitation to be there that evening. After the rehearsal had wrapped, Genoves, Rock, and Knopf sat down to chat with me. We waxed philosophical about music, recording, and the pains and pleasures of rock n roll. With an EP in the works and a busy schedule of touring ahead of them, The Beautiful Scars have an eventful and exciting year on the horizon. I’ll often dedicate swathes of this column to meaningful quotes from conversations I have with local artists, but I’ll beg the pardon of The Beautiful Scars to instead allow me to focus on something else I took away from that evening. Speaking to the band that night, and being privy to such a unique experience, the topic of a music community kept coming up again and again. It was how the band met, and how I had met them. It seemed that over and over, throughout the course of our conversation, we kept coming back to how incredibly important maintaining a healthy music scene and community really is. The Newsy Neighbour has always been about fostering and growing local community. Whether it be within Langdon, Chestermere, Strathmore, or one of the outlying areas, the mandate of this magazine has ever been to promote local goings-on, and to bring people together. In my opinion – and in my experience – there are few convergences that exemplify the positive elements of supportive community more than a strong and vibrant local music scene. I’ve been dedicated to this monthly music column not just because writing about music is fun (it totally is!), but because in the back of my mind, I hope that it’s working towards building a scene of music where people can come out to shows, meet new people, have a great evening, and rest assured that they’ll run into friends there that they know and love, each and every time. All of the most important people in my life, I’ve met through music – and I want nothing more than to help create and be part of a community of music-lovers where similar bonds and relationships are formed on the regular. There is an astounding wealth of talent and personality within the music scene in our varied towns and hamlets, and it’s exciting to see a real, solid community start to form and coalesce within the midst of it all. Music begets music, and community begets community. I can’t encourage everyone strongly enough to keep making music, to keep playing shows, and to keep coming together for the love of rhythm, lyrics, and musical talent. The music community out here is only just beginning to come into its own – and it’s dedicated bands like The Beautiful Scars (and people like Knopf, Rock and Genoves) that are going to help it grow bigger and more supportive yet. Keep up the good work, everyone – you’re doing your community proud! Kyle Penn

By the time we are old enough to send out a resume and work for a pay cheque, we should have a good idea of who we are and what we like, or - equally as important in my mind – don’t like. For example, I guarantee that if you put me in a job working with toddlers and infants, there will be tantrums. Full blown, kicking and screaming, pounding on the floor, tears streaming down the face – hyperventilating tantrums, and that would be me. Maybe half of us have the horrid luck of working for a micro-managing, nit picking, never pleased, sociopathic, nose picking, corporate crusading supervisor. I know I have, but only once or twice. For the vast majority of my career my supervisors have been pretty great. Sure, they have the odd habit or personality tick that might annoy or rub the wrong way but hate – nope not that common, and definitely not half of them. Maybe it’s the coworkers. Are they the reason half of us hate our jobs? Do we all have someone in our office that seeks pleasure in our pain? Do we all have a co-worker that seems to fundamental disagree with, and protests, personal hygiene? It is well documented that bullying continues beyond the school grounds and into the work force. Is this the cause for such a depressingly high number of unhappy workers? Could it be that as a society our expectations on what our job provides have become unrealistic? We now live in a society where the majority of employees stay in a job for two to three years before moving on. Gone are the days of the company man who starts his career with one company and then 45 years later receives a hand shake, gold watch and retirement accolades from the same company. Did he love his job day in and day out
for 45 years? Most likely not but then, perhaps the expectation to love your job wasn’t there. Perhaps that is why people stayed in the same job for long periods of time. And perhaps that is where the problem lies today. Have jobs become more than a means to provide for yourself and family? Do we need more than a pay cheque big enough to cover our expenses and allow for some fun to make us happy? I would think at least 50% of us would say yes. So how then do we go about ensuring happiness in the workplace? Chocolate! Vast amounts of dark chocolate and perhaps the occasional glass of vino while laughing and bonding with (at) your coworkers. No? Well if I knew the answer to guaranteed happiness in the job then perhaps I’d be rich enough not to have to work– regardless if I love the job or hate it.

Lentils I have always passed lentils by in the grocery store because I thought they didn’t look overly appetizing! And truthfully, I was not really sure how to cook the things. But, little did I know, I was missing a food that is not only healthy but delicious. REALLY, they are luscious if you prepare them properly and there are a TON of recipes in which you can use them. Lentils are small but they pull a big punch; they include beneficial nutrients like fibre, protein, minerals, and vitamins, they are still low in calories and contain virtually no fat. One cup of cooked lentils only contains about 230 calories, but still leaves you feeling full and satisfied. Nutty and earthy in flavour, lentils have a high nutritional value that anyone can benefit from by incorporating this healthy legume into their diet. They help to reduce blood cholesterol since it contains high levels of soluble fieer. Lowering your cholesterol levels reduces your risk of heart disease and stroke by keeping your arteries clean. Lentils are also a great source of folate and magnesium, which are big contributors to heart health. Folate lowers your homocysteine levels, a serious risk factor for heart disease. Magnesium improves blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients throughout the body. Low levels of magnesium have been directly associated with heart disease, so eating lentils will keep your heart happy! Insoluble dietary fibre found in lentils helps prevent constipation and other digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis. Adding to the many benefits of fibre, soluble fibre traps carbohydrates, slowing down digestion and stabilizing blood sugar levels. This can be especially helpful for those with diabetes, insulin resistance or hypoglycemia. Of all legumes and nuts, lentils contain the third-highest levels

of protein. 26 percent of lentils’ calories are attributed to protein, which makes them a wonderful source of protein for vegetarians and vegans. Lentils increase steady, slow-burning energy due its fibre and complex carbohydrates and they are also a good source of iron, which transports oxygen throughout your body and is key to energy production and metabolism. One of the best things when it comes to lentils is that they can be quick and easy to make and they absorb flavours from other foods and seasonings all the time providing fibre and proteins. Add them to your stews, chili, soups, salads, even your smoothies!! Little did I know that cooking lentils is the same as cooking rice, which we all know is the easiest food in the world to cook! All you do is use 3 cups of liquid (water or stock) to 1 cup of dry lentils. Be sure to use a large enough saucepan, as the lentils will double or triple in size. Bring to a boil, cover tightly, reduce heat and simmer until they are tender. For whole lentils, cook time is typically 15-20 minutes. Or, try something new; the next time you’re having a party, try making some exotic lentil dips and spreads. Everyone loves hummus and we know we can make unique types of hummus by substituting other beans and legumes for the beloved chickpea, but have you ever considered making lentil hummus? Cook up a cup of red or green lentils until they are tender. Throw them into the food processor with tahini, chopped garlic cloves, lemon juice and olive oil and puree until smooth. Add some herbs and spices such as cumin, paprika, salt, cilantro or parsley or just use your imagination. For a spicy kick, add red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce. Serve your extra-special hummus with pita chips or raw veggies. Lentils, especially the green and red ones that hold their shape, are wonderful in salads. They can be added to any salad or they can be the main ingredient. My favourite lentil salad is a warm one with vegetables. I cook 1 ½ cups of red lentils until they are tender. bles with the lentils and wilt a big bunch of baby spinach into it. I top this with a vinaigrette of red wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, extra-virgin olive oil, thyme, garlic, salt, and pepper. It’s delicious hot or cold, as a main dish or a side dish.
The Best Marinated Lentils
There seems more and more people turning to a plant-based diet. This recipe is perfect for them, as it is quick, satisfying, versatile, and protein heavy. It can be thrown together in less than a half hour and can be stored in the fridge for the whole work week. It’s delicious on top of salads, or in lettuce or pita wraps, or simply served as the main protein source for any meal. For the best texture, I recommend cooking the lentils from scratch (as opposed to using canned lentils). If you already have cooked lentils on hand, you’ll need about 3 1/2 cups for this recipe. 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 1/2 teaspoons pure maple syrup 1 teaspoon fine sea salt, or to taste 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 to 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced green onions (about 1 medium bunch), dark and light green parts only 1/3 cup fresh parsley leaves, minced 1/2 cup oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained and finely chopped Pick over the lentils, discarding any debris. Rinse and drain the lentils and put them in a medium saucepan along with 4 cups (1 L) of water. Bring to a boil over medium to high heat, then reduce the heat to medium. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes, until tender. In a large bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, maple syrup, salt, and pepper. Stir in the green onions, parsley, and tomatoes. Drain the lentils very well. Spoon them into the bowl with the other ingredients (it’s okay if they are still warm) and stir well. Season with additional salt and pepper. Serve immediately, or let cool slightly and then cover and marinate in the fridge for a couple of hours or overnight. Stir well before serving. This dish will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. Don’t you just love learning about new luscious healthy foods? I will never pass by lentils again. If you, too, thought lentils were old-fashioned and boring, think again. There is a reason these little powerhouses have been around since ancient times. I LOVE cayenne pepper! Cayenne pepper is hot, hot, hot! But it is also magic; a magic powder in which to make a magic potion. Did you know cayenne pepper has numerous and effective benefits? It's used to help digestion, including healing an upset stomach, slow intestinal gas, stop stomach pain, cure diarrhea and as a natural remedy for cramps. Many of us use cayenne pepper
to add a little spice to our life, but did you know that it has the power to change your health? It has been used for both food and medicine for the last 9,000 years! Cayenne pepper can stimulate your body’s circulation and reduce acidity; it’s a powerful, spicy little pepper that offers many health benefits. It has the power to relieve a toothache, seasickness, alcoholism, malaria, and fever; it’s also used to help people who have difficulty swallowing. And there is more, the fruit of the capsicum plant contains a chemical called capsaicin. Capsaicin is being studied to test its ability

to reduce pain sensations when applied to the skin, and research indicates that it would be effective as a remedy for headaches (including migraines), potential cure for osteoarthritis, shingles and fibromyalgia. This little pepper contains vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin E, potassium, manganese and flavonoids – which provides its powerful antioxidant properties. It is stimulating to the circulatory system, which can help keep blood pressure and cholesterol levels low. Cayenne is an overall stimulant. It encourages the cells to work more efficiently. This not only improves blood circulation but also improves lymphatic health as well. Holy cayenne!
A few years ago, I heard about a lemon water, honey, and cayenne diet, it was hugely popular with celebrities at the time as a weight-loss “detox.” The diet consisted of lemon water sweetened with honey (I used maple syrup) and cayenne pepper. To detox, you were to drink this alone for 10 days, I did not last that long (about 2 days). The diet naturally led to rapid weight loss, if you lasted for 10 days! No kidding! I still drink a lot of lemon water and just recently started adding cayenne to it and I feel great. Both lemon and cayenne have powerful active ingredients. Lemon contains around eight percent citric acid, which aids in smooth digestion, helps dissolve kidney stones and helps to alkalize the body. Cayenne’s health punch comes with the aid of capsaicin, which has received considerable attention in the scientific world. Research continues to reveal more wonders of this antioxidant every year. Together they help to stimulate the liver and with the right balance of nutrients to detox from harmful substances, such as sugar and alcohol. It also stimulates the digestive system and intestines. Now, if you’re not the lemon and cayenne pepper kind of person, why not try just adding it to your recipes? Since I have discovered how amazingly healthy it is for you I find myself adding it to a lot of the things I cook. I put it in my gravies, vegetables, soups, chili (of course) and stir-fry’s. I did find some very good recipes so you too can start enjoying the wonderful health benefits of eating cayenne. I tried to find unusual and different types of techniques for using your new-found potion and this is what I found.
WELSH RAREBIT
Cheese on toast (not very original), but my husband made this for me a few years back and I was pleasantly surprized at how delicious it was. 2 tbsp butter 2 tbsp flour ½ Can strong, dark beer 1 cup mature cheddar cheese, grated 1 free-range egg yolk 1 tsp dry mustard 4 tsp Worcestershire sauce ¼ tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste 4 thick slices healthy bread or your choice (I like sprouted bread) Freshly ground black pepper Melt the butter in a non-stick saucepan and stir in the flour. Cook over a low heat for 30 seconds, stirring constantly. Slowly The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

add the beer. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly until the sauce is thick and smooth. Add the cheese, egg yolk, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and cayenne pepper. Cook until the cheese melts, stirring constantly. Season with freshly ground black pepper and set aside to cool. Place the bread on a baking tray lined with aluminium foil and toast on each side until golden-brown. Spread the cheese sauce thickly over the bread, making sure the slices are completely covered so the edges don’t burn. Return to the oven until lightly browned and bubbling.
GAMBERONES FRITTI
A tasty way to make prawns or shrimp. 4 tbsp chickpea or plain flour ½ tsp salt ½ tsp cayenne pepper 4 raw tiger prawns 1 tbsp olive oil 1 lime, cut in half Mix the flour, salt and cayenne pepper in a bowl. Dredge the prawns in the flour mixture to coat. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the prawns for 4-5 minutes, or until they have turned pink. Garnish with the lime halves.
CHEESE STRAWS
Flaky, buttery cheese straws are a party hit with kids and grown-ups. Crank up the mustard and pepper if you want more zing. 1 ¾ cups flour 1/8 tsp salt 1 cup cold butter ½ cup mature cheddar cheese ¼ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese (or a similar vegetarian hard cheese) Pinch English mustard powder ½ tsp cayenne pepper 2 free-range eggs, yolks only Sift the flour and a pinch of salt into a bowl. Using your fingertips, rub in the butter until all the lumps are gone and the texture is like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the cheese, mustard powder, cayenne, and egg yolks. Add 4-5 tablespoons of cold water and mix to a firm dough, add more flour if required. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with baking parchment. Roll out the dough to a square, about the same thickness as a pie crust. Cut into ½ in strips. Transfer carefully onto the lined baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes, until crisp, then leave to cool on the tray.

A little history of this unusual cocktail. It is named after the Mexican Flag, which is green, white and red. And it’s by the colours you line up a Bandera. The green, representing the independence movement, becomes the limes; the white, representing the purity of the catholic faith, becomes the tequila; and the red, representing the blood of the national heroes, becomes the Sangria. First make the sangria: 1 cup tomato juice ¾ cup Orange juice 3 oz fresh lime juice 8 dashes Tabasco sauce 2 level teaspoons of cayenne pepper

The more time I spend with children, the more aware I am of my own two boys evolving into independent young men. I feel impressed upon something that I feel we, as parents/ teachers/mentors, must do for our children. A gift, but also a responsibility. Self-Love. It is more important now, more than any other time in history, to teach our children to love themselves. It is SelfLove that will most influence the type of person our children become. It will be Self-Love that will give our children the confidence that this modern era will demand. Self-Love will empower compassion, fuel passions amidst discouragement, and encourage them to strive for balance and health in body, mind and spirit. The tricky part, however, is that Self-Love is something that we often do not effectively teach our children. It is only effectively communicated in one way. Learning it ourselves, and putting it into practice. The truth is, our kids are looking to us all the time. If we want to see our children become the best they can be, to not only accept themselves but to love themselves wholeheartedly, then it is our responsibility to do for ourselves first. As you learn to turn the tide of thoughts and feelings of negativity, stress and worry to thoughts of self awareness, peace and personal development, so will they. I will continue to improve my love for myself as I am right now – and trust that as I learn to observe and accept myself, make better choices as I learn from mistakes, and love myself more, my Self-Love will in turn teach my own children, and those I am blessed to teach, to love themselves more too.

Back to School HELLO, hello! Larry here. How has your summer been? Ours has been absolutely fantastic. We have had a whole bunch of hot, summery days and a few muchly needed wet and stormy ones.
Our garden is so happy, we hope yours is too. A big wind storm took down our grapes trellis, but it was fixable. Tomatoes and raspberries, currants and grapes, and carrots and beans seem to be giving us a terrific crop. By far, the greatest success has been the weeds, as usual. We know, however, how grounding it is to play in the dirt. There are so many health benefits so we keep playing away. Digging up the weeds, one by one, harvesting our veggies and fruit as they ripen, one by one. The summer and the garden have been so, so good to us. This time of year has us anticipating two very, very important events. EVENT NUMBER 1: That day (usually in the second week of August) that we wake up in the morning and walk outside and say “YUP, fall is in the air.” The Shift has occurred. JUST LIKE THAT!! Every year. Although we love summer, and there is a lot to argue about our summers being way too short, we still anticipate and enjoy that one day, every single year. It is refreshing, it gives us the promise of a beautiful, cool yet warm, colourful Indian Summer. Fall is by far my favourite time of year. Although Roger tends to disagree and say spring is his favourite. EVENT NUMBER 2: It’s the most wonderful time of the year! School starts! Everyone, young and old, gets to have their routine back. I know, I know… summer has come to an end, but let’s look at the positives. Routines, Indian Summer, Thanksgiving, Christmas shopping and the Christmas spirit, and so much more. For those of you that are sending Diabetic Children back to school, I wanted to let you know there are resources to help you wade through the process. The Shaw Charity Classic is not a major on the PGA TOUR Champions, but it should be. In four short years, this world class event at the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary has won four major awards for excellence. It continues to be one of the best attended events on the circuit for players and fans, and year after year it sets a record for charitable giving. Why do PGA TOUR Champions players love to come to Southern Alberta? "It's everything," says 2017 Senior Players Champion Scott McCarron. "It's the mountains, it's the fishing, it's the people, it's the restaurants - players just want to be there!" "The tournament is so well organized and the galleries give us the feel of the PGA Tour." 52-year-old McCarron is one of the many stars who will tee it up at the 5th annual Shaw Charity Classic, August 30 - September 3. Last year, golf fans were entertained by the long hitting John Daly who struggled in his first appearance in Calgary. Daly did pick up

his first PGA TOUR Champions victory earlier this year in Texas. The real highlight came on day one when 67-year-old golfing legend Tom Watson shot his age on his birthday. Fan favourite and 2014 Shaw champion Fred Couples will be back for the 2017 event. A back injury kept him out of last year's championship but this year Freddie is healthy and already a 2-time winner this season. The most interesting man in golf, Miguel Angel Jimenez, will also return after a one-year hiatus. Known for his trademark ponytail and Cuban cigars, Jimenez matched the Canyon Meadows course record in 2015 but had a disappointing final round for a 12th place finish. Fellow Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal will make his first ever appearance at the Shaw Charity Classic. The 51-year-old Olazabal has 30 wins worldwide on his resume but he just joined the tour in February after being sidelined for nearly four years while battling a severe form of arthritis that made it difficult for him to even walk. "I was in such pain I could not even leave my house for nearly two years so I feel fortunate to be back on the tour," he told tournament organizers earlier this year. "My goals have changed, and are now focused on staying healthy and just getting back in touch with competitive golf." I look forward to visiting Calgary for the Shaw Charity Classic. It is an area I have long wanted to visit as I have enjoyed fishing in other parts of Alberta over the past several years,” said Faldo. “The tournament’s focus on youth and children's charities closely aligns with that of my own Faldo Series, which globally provides opportunity through golf. I look forward to supporting the effort and celebrating five years of giving to, and inspiring, Canadian youth through this event.” Singh does play a lot on the PGA TOUR Champions but after teaming up with Shaw defending champion Carlos Franco to win the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf earlier this year, he was talked into coming to Calgary. “Carlos talked to me about all of the successes of the Shaw Charity Classic – the golf course, the hospitality, the crowd support, and the amount of money that is raised for children’s charity in the area. Those are all very important factors for me in choosing where I want to play so I wanted to make sure I was a part of this year’s event,” said Singh. “I have fond memories of playing in Canada. The fans share my passion for the game and have always treated me with great respect. I am excited to have the opportunity to try and win another title in Canada this September.” With 53 wins worldwide, and still a regular on the PGA Tour, Singh will be considered one of the favourites in 2017. The biggest winner of the Shaw Charity Classic is certainly the youth based charities in Alberta. 13.8 million dollars raised so far and with a new three-year commitment for the title sponsorship from Shaw Communications and the commitment from the stars and legends of the game, this legacy will continue to grow. ALBERTA OPEN FARM DAYS It sure has been an eventful summer in Southern Alberta, and there is no sign of it slowing down in August – Alberta Open Farm Days are taking place across our province August 19th20th. This year marks the fifth annual Alberta Open Farm Days. Over one-hundred farms across Alberta are taking part in this year’s festivities, and many are located right here in Bow River riding. Some of the farms hosting fantastic events on August 19th include Grainworks in Vulcan, who are offering tours of their facilities, the Livlifelivery Farm in Mossleigh, where activities will include viewing animals and picking vegetables, Winter’s Turkeys in Dalemead, where you can enjoy a tour of their turkey barns, Rosebud Valley Honey, featuring honey tasting and a tour of their hives, CP Farms in Barnwell, offering tours and other fun and games, Brooks Corn Maze, with children’s activities and animals, and finally Poplar Bluff Organics in Strathmore, with tours and wagon rides available. To top things off, the absolute worst thing that could have ever happened to me happened to me. I am tearing up as I write this. They got… (pause for effect…) Guinea Pigs. You heard that right. Guinea Pigs. I hate them. I want to get to them. And they are evil and trying to take over the world. I mean… guinea pigs, people. Why would anyone do that to themselves? Let’s discuss the guinea pig insanity. There’s a huge cage in my living room. They MOVED MY BED to make room for it. This is just the beginning of the insanity. I keep walking over to where my bed WAS and it’s still not there, and the pigs are still there, working up a scheme of world dominance. I like to sit on one of my other 4 couches and glare at my family to show my disgust. The pigs squeak. They make this little sound that everyone thinks is sooooooo cute. It’s not cute. They are evil and this is part of their huge plot to take over the world. No matter where I am in the house, if I hear those squeaks, I run as fast as I can over to them to thwart their attempts at world dominance. Also, they boop me. They run around in their stupid cage, and I’m standing there glaring at them, making sure they are aware I know of their plans, and instead of being fearful of me, they boop me on the nose. I hate them with everything in me. Don’t worry, my trusted readers. I am on the job and will continue to protect my family despite the animal abuse that is placed on me. I mean,

The Subtle Signs Your Pet Wants You to Know Animals offer so many benefits to a family structure – from encouraging exercise and outdoor activities, to teaching kids responsibility and routine. But what happens when your fuzzy bundle of joy becomes a hassle, tries to bite, or prefers to be alone instead of in the midst of activity?
It’s important when introducing a pet into the family we consider the needs of the family AND of the pet. Is a cat or a dog an ideal companion for your family? Does your space allow for a large dog or small dog? A high energy dog for running outside, or more docile for a relaxed lifestyle? Long haired pet or short haired? What type of disposition? How will they be around kids? These are all great questions, and your veterinary professional can help you in your search for the ideal match. Most children are in LOVE and fascinated with their pets! They often want to interact with them constantly. Their human-animal bond is often unbreakable. It builds trust, reduces stress, and creates loyalty that is without explanation. We must, however, consider, that when creating these bonds, we ensure the needs of the pet are met as well, as they often do not communicate “effectively” with us until it is too late. In other words, animals tend to drop subtle cues when they are uncomfortable, ones that we are not even aware of. You can protect your pet and child by knowing what these signs are and by providing “child free” zones that allow the pet to retreat to a safe space when they need to. So what should we be watching for when a dog or cat is starting to become uncomfortable or feel threatened?

A dog that tries to growl and bite, or a cat that tries to hiss, scratch, or bite means that we have already missed the subtle signs that we should’ve clued in to. Pets and children need supervision when they are together so that we can recognize these signs early and intervene when the animal has had enough. Even the happiest of pets may surprise you with an unexpected hiss or growl. As a rule, always ensure an animal has a safe space to retreat to where they can be alone at any given time. Teach your child the signs to watch for when a cat or dog has had enough. Encourage short periods of interaction instead of long sessions. Ensure the pet’s environment is enriched, and that they get enough mental stimulation and physical activity on a daily basis. 1. How the founder dug deep to find courage and jump from a plane after being inspired to raise money for a home that helps women find their confidence and independence after life experiences have gotten them down. She encouraged us to acknowledge our fears… and do it anyway. 2. The first Talker shared how feeling invisible all her life and never feeling that she was ‘enough’ guided her to a successful career in stand-up comedy where she finds the humour in daily life. She encouraged us to become visible to ourselves… and know that we each have something to offer to the world.

Colourful binders, pencils, erasers, markers and more, all reminding parents that their children will soon be back learning new things in another year of classes. Even though my children have all graduated, at this time of year I look over the supplies excitedly and come home with a bagful. Why? Because I am a grateful student in the School of Life and

To be fair, some experiences were physically, emotionally or psychologically painful. Life is full of these types of experiences and we cannot completely avoid them; however, I believe something positive can come from many (if not all) of our experiences and often it can be used to help others. Consider the experience of Gandhi who was forcibly thrown off a train when he refused to move to the back. He could have chosen to avoid any possible repeat of this experience, but instead it sparked a commitment to fight the ‘deep disease of colour prejudice’, a decision that made him into one of the most influential anti-war activists in history. There is Candice Lightner who started MADD after her 13-year old daughter was killed by a drunk driver and Bill W. who co-founded Alcoholics Anonymous following many painful years as an alcoholic.
3. The second Talker was disconnected from herself and those around her because she didn’t know who she was, and this pain led her to teaching others how to use meditation and mindfulness to build bridges of connection. She encouraged us be present and aware in our lives… and find the wisdom, learnings and insights life offers. As Bob Bitchin said, “The difference between an adventure and an ordeal is attitude,” so the next time you are at the store, pick up some supplies for your next year in the School of Life and join us at Women Talk where you will get plenty of inspiration on how to make your life a meaningful adventure. Protecting Smiles Forever Taking care of a child’s smile is a rewarding aspect of Family Dentistry. A child’s early exposure to dental care can make them a fan – or fearful – of the dentist. Why is Early Childhood Dental Care Important? It’s hard to imagine that childhood dental decay is on the rise. In a time of electric toothbrushes, fluorinated toothpastes and access to nutritious food, why would any young child have to deal with the discomfort of a cavity? Relaxing Self Massage for Kids Massages… for Children? If you have children, don’t forget that massages can also help calm kids down! A small study was conducted by the Touch Institute (University of Miami) on kids ages 7 to 17 who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). He has been part of every substantial thing that exists that volunteers have been involved in. From the outdoor skating rink to the Fieldhouse to the 45-acre jointuse site that will start to become a part of the Langdon Recreation Landscape in the not-too-distant future. Due to Bob’s kind efforts and leadership, Langdon is a better place. He and Shirley are planning on relocating to BC in a while and they will be missed. Thank you very much for all you have done Bob, and Langdon will be enjoying the fruits of your labour for many years to come. Be proud of your efforts and satisfied that you will be leaving Langdon a better place because you were here. Recreation in Rocky View County is done differently than what commonly exists in urban towns and cities. Typically, with large populations, there is a Parks and Recreation department that builds, runs and maintains facilities. There are some exceptions like Community Centres that we see in Calgary, where the Community Association runs a facility. Even Calgary is going more the way Rocky View does; recreation in leasing their Cityowned facilities to different operators. With about a million acres and a multitude of communities, the County strives to support the efforts of the many associations by granting recreation dollars to the hard-working volunteer organizations. In the past, the Ag Societies were the prevalent form of recreation groups. We have a fine example of a successful one in the Bow Valley Ag Society that operates the Indus Rec Centre, where many of our budding future NHL stars are learning their hockey skills. As time goes on, we will be watching many new facilities coming to life here in Langdon. The Quad baseball field is going to be the next large visible facility. The 45-acre site that is jointly owned by the School Board and the County (another Bob Thomson effort) will be housing 4 new fields in the next few years. The High School will

Building Beautiful Spaces – and a Strong Community Here at The Newsy Neighbour, we’ve always been focused on fostering local business and bringing attention to all the growing communities that we serve. As we strive to continuously grow and sup-
port the members of the towns and hamlets we call home, we’re always looking for new and exciting ways to be the best publication that we can be. On that note, during a recent meeting, we realized that one of the most important spaces of the magazine wasn’t being utilized to its full potential: we’re talking, of course, about the cover! Our covers usually serve to shout-out the theme or focus of that month’s issue, but often do very little beyond that. This prime piece of magazine real estate is the first thing readers see when they pick up The Newsy Neighbour, so we decided to make the cover represent the focus of what we do, and who we are: small business, and community! With that, we’re dedicating the cover of each Newsy Neighbour issue to the task of highlighting local small business owners and community members each and every month, in order to shine the spotlight on the people who live, work, and play here in our communities. We’re proud of this new initiative, and hope that it helps to further the sense of camaraderie and connectedness between everyone living in Strathmore, Chestermere, Langdon, and the surrounding areas. We couldn’t be more excited about this new program, and are pleased to be kicking off this monthly showcase by focusing on local community members Brad Blanchette and Brett Presley, and their business, New Space Construction! First, a bit of history: back in 2008, Presley and Blanchette worked construction together, as they had done for most of their lives. They both had years of experience under their belts, and were good at what they did – but they wanted more. It was then that they decided to strike out and start their own company, and New Space Construction was born. “We really just wanted to do our own thing, be our own bosses,” Presley told me when I sat down to chat with him about New Space. “We’d both been doing this type of work forever, and we got along well, so we figured, why not?” It’s been almost ten years since, and New Space Construction has grown by leaps and bounds. Starting a business from the ground up is never an easy undertaking, and in an area as saturated with building and renovation companies as Calgary is, it can be tough to make a go of it. “The first year or two was really a struggle,” Presley reflected. “Getting people to know who we are, it was tough. We didn’t get a lot of phone calls, and there definitely wasn’t a lot of work coming through. We had limited funds, couldn’t really do much advertising…it wasn’t easy.” As the days and weeks went by, though, work finally started to come through. “The biggest struggle was getting the phone to ring,” Presley said. “But once it did, we were in business. You get out there, you get those first few jobs under your belt, you do good work, and people start talking. Before long, if you keep delivering, you build up a good reputation for yourself, and as long as you stay on-point, the work will keep coming in.” Against all odds, Presley and Blanchette persevered, and it paid off: they

now helm a successful business that specializes in roofing, exteriors, and renovations throughout Strathmore, Langdon, Chestermere, and the Calgary areas. When I asked Presley about the transition from labourer to business owner, he had a bit of a chuckle before detailing some of the differences: “First off, if anyone thinks owning their own business will give them more freedom, it doesn’t. I have zero free time. But, there’s a huge amount of satisfaction that comes from running a project, doing everything on your own, and then hearing back from a happy customer. All the training was on-the-job – I didn’t go to school for any of this, and feel that doing something is the best way to learn. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of setting out to do something, and working hard until it happens. That’s what I love about my job, is that feeling of pride and accomplishment.” Beyond providing top-notch, quality home construction work, New Space also goes above and beyond to be actively engaged with and supportive of the communities that it’s a part of. “We just participated in the parade at Langdon Days for our fourth consecutive year, and are about to take part in the parade in Chestermere for our third year in a row,” Presley proudly informed me. “Obviously, we get some advertising out of taking part in things like this, but it goes way beyond that. We’re a part of things out here, and we want to be a business that supports the community, and the people that are members of it. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do if it weren’t for people supporting us, so we want to be able to support them back, whenever we’re able to.” What does the future hold for New Space Construction? Lots of excitement! “We’re proud of our successes over the years, but we’re always looking to grow,” Presley told me. “We started with a big focus on renovations, but now we’re looking to move forward and really spend more time on roofing and exteriors. We’re looking to break into the new home market as well, and ply our trade on roofing and exteriors there, too. That’s the type of work that I like doing, and it’s the type of work my crew likes doing, so we want to put our energy toward doing what everyone enjoys.” Being a small business owner is never a walk in the park, but as Presley and Blanchette will attest to, there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction that comes from building something from the ground up – whether it’s a kitchen, or a company! Before we finished talking, I asked Presley what advice he had for small business owners just getting their start, and he said this: “Stay positive, and don’t give up. It takes a long time, and there’s lots of competition out there. It’s up to you to let people know what you do differently, and why they should hire you. For New Space, we took the time to let people know that we’re about more than just slapping a new roof on your home. We consider the big picture, and make sure the job is done right. That means when we leave, you can rest assured that your home and roof will be set for years to come – shingles, ventilation, the whole system. If you do good work, your business will find its clients.” Wise words! At this point, it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that smoking is a major reason for accelerated ageing and disease. This comes mostly from conventionally made cigarettes, but there is also a negative effect from other smoking mediums. So why is cigarette smoking so harmful to your ageing process and promotes untimely disease? Let me count the ways: Cigarettes are more than just tobacco. In fact, there are a ridiculous amount of other toxic ingredients that are sure to pull the life out of you. Some of these toxic substances include arsenic, methane, butane, cadmium (batteries), toluene, ammonia, and methanol (rocket fuel). Mix this in with a (un)healthy dose of carbon monoxide and nicotine, and there’s no wonder they call them “cancer sticks”. The carbon monoxide in cigarettes displaces oxygen in your body and your skin, and the nicotine reduces blood flow, which leaves your face dry and discoloured. Cigarette smoking depletes essential nutrients that are important for your vitality and your skin, including vitamin C which helps protect and repair skin damage. The cadmium in cigarettes is a well-known toxin that is particularly harmful to the kidneys. This may affect your urinary system, make you retain water, and promote bags and dark spots under your eyes. Smoking is a leading cause of cancer, including lung, throat, mouth, esophageal, and skin cancer. In a 2001 study, smokers are three times as likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma than non-smokers. Cigarette smoking is also extremely taxing to the thyroid, which is partly responsible for your energy, weight, hormonal balance, and metabolism. Smoking cigarettes can increase the risk of cataracts by 22% by putting oxidative stress on the lens of the eye. Cigarette smoke damages the delicate cilia lining the inner walls of your lungs and irritates them to the point that they produce excessive mucous. As this mucous builds, respiration suffers. Alcohol is very prevalent in our society, and is often the go to beverage of choice in a wide variety of situations. In fact it is heavily consumed in any celebration, or set back, and this categorizes the majority of human’s moods on a day to day basis. Although there has been several studies showing the benefits of alcohol, the drawbacks are more pronounced. Alcohol, after all, is a drug and with one too many wobbly pops comes the slurring, irrational behaviour, lack of balance, and headaches. This is certainly not the symptoms of a healthy choice. One of the primary reasons alcohol causes premature ageing, disease, and death is it’s effect on your liver. In order to metabolize alcohol, it has to turn ethanol (alcohol) into acetate, and that doesn’t happen without first converting ethanol into acetaldehyde. This compound is up to 30 times more toxic than ethanol itself, so it has no place being in the body. If your liver is not properly producing glutathione, a compound that transforms acetaldehyde into acetate, the liver’s detoxifying processes are put on hold while glutathione stores are attempted to be built back up. This mean that the noxious acetaldehyde in left circulating in your bloodstream. If your liver is compromised and your glutathione stores start to deteriorate, regular consumption of alcohol (especially more than one drink per hour) leads to more of this poisonous substance circulating in your bloodstream. This not only hurts the liver, but every organ and gland that is fed by your bloodstream. So effectively, this alcohol consumption pollutes your entire body and compromises all your body’s functions. Chronic stress Chronic stress is a common complaint these days, as people attempt to keep up with the pace of life. Unfortunately, this usually results in poor work-life balance, bad eating habits, and an excess of legal drugs like coffee and alcohol. Stress has a number of negative effects on the body, many of them which will create premature ageing, disease, and death. One of the major components that facilitate this process is elevated cortisol. Cortisol is an adrenal hormone (often called the stress hormone) and if it stays abnormally high (such as in chronic stress conditions) it can become dangerous and contribute to long term health problems. It has been linked to adrenal fatigue, hormonal imbalances, heart disease, excessive blood sugar levels, elevated cholesterol, excess body fat (particularly around the midsection), and depressed sex hormone levels in both men and women. Those with rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune conditions have also been found to have high cortisol levels. Nothing makes a person feel old like being tired, moody, and achy, and high cortisol from chronic stress is sure to create many of these symptoms.
Sugar This one should be obvious to most health enthusiasts by now, as sugar has been waging war on people’s health for decades. More specifically, white refined sugar that is found in baked goods, highly processed foods, and even “healthy” snacks. If there was one thing that has had the most detrimental effect on people’s health and has created many chronic and degenerative diseases, it’s sugar. Sugar feeds infections like candida and causes it to proliferate to extremely unhealthy levels, which in turn cascades into multiple disease processes. Sugar is also an excellent food source for cancer, an epidemic that is now being diagnosed in approximately 50% of the population in North America. Refined sugar consumption also suppresses brain derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, a very important growth hormone for the brain. This factor triggers new connections between neurons in the brain that are vital for memory function. Studies have shown
low BDNF levels in patients with depression and schizophrenia, and the consumption of sugar could exacerbate those conditions by further contributing to those low levels. Refined sugar also increases inflammation, which can disrupt the digestive and immune systems. If this inflammation is chronic, it can lead to a higher risk of depression and schizophrenia. Dr. Ilardi, associate professor of psychology at University of Kansas, encourages depressed patients to remove refined sugar from their diets, and those who were willing to comply reported significant improvements in mental clarity and mood. Some of the other common chronic diseases that sugar consumption promotes include diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, obesity, arthritis, high blood pressure, and even dementia. To help keep that ageing and disease process to a minimum, severely restricting ALL added sugar is necessary. For those who are relatively healthy, stick to whole fruits for your sweet cravings, and try to eat them more seasonally. For those with candida overgrowth, cancer, or diabetes, avoiding high sugar fruits would be prudent.
Artificial sweeteners Artificial sweeteners such as Splenda, Equal, Sweet ‘N Low, sucralose, aspartame, and most recently, AminoSweet are found in 6,000 products and consumed by more than 250 million people (Americans consuming about half). Artificial sweeteners can be found in found in sodas, yogurt, chewing gum, cooking sauces, tabletop sweeteners, flavored water, cereal, and sugar free products. Aspartame is a combination of chemicals, namely aspartic acid (an amino acid with excitatory effects on brain cells), methanol, and phenylalanine, and when broken down produces a compound that is a powerful brain-tumor-causing chemical. Aspartame consumption causes a variety of other symptoms including anxiety attacks, slurred speech, depression, and migraines. Stay away from these toxic nightmares at all costs. Not only did we get the chance to host our 3rd Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival, but I was invited out to Lyalta to discover a new community that’s clearly the makings of something special: The Lakes of Muirfield. Of course, I’d heard about The Lakes of Muirfield before – driving to and from Strathmore means passing plenty of road signs pointing out the fledgling neighbourhood and 18-hole golf course. It always sounded like a great place, and I’ve read plenty about what a pleasant little community it is, but actually spending some time out there really impressed upon me that there’s something singular about The Lakes of Muirfield. This isn’t just another development or new build out in rural Alberta – this is

Working for you 24/7 the start of something grand. I remember being younger, and visiting Langdon to see friends from time to time. There was a distinct point, somewhere in the 90’s, when a tangible change began to sweep through the town. At one moment, it felt like Langdon would continue forevermore just the way it was – as a quiet, sleepy rural hamlet, never really changing or growing that much. Then, it was like somebody flipped a switch, and something changed. An energy developed around the town: new businesses started popping up all over; and exciting, beautiful communities began taking root, enticing people to come out and discover exactly what made it such a brilliant place to build a home in. It’s that energy – that excitement – that
I witnessed out in The Lakes of Muirfield. All the developers and influential community members had come together to share their love for the community and passion for growing it. They talked about the great work that Vanity Homes, Douglas Homes, Gulf Homes, and Indus Homes were doing to provide quality, stylish builds for people to live and raise their families in. There was a sense of comradery between everyone present – people talked of waving to their neighbours in the street, and calling out “Good morning!” to one another as they went about their day, and it was clear that these anecdotes were genuine and true. It’s easy enough to build a brand-new community full of beautiful homes, but you can’t fake the genuine sense of neighbourliness and friendship that was thick in the air that day in Lyalta. The one thorn in the side of everyone who has been working hard to grow The Lakes of Muirfield these past few years has been the lack of a permanent wastewater solution. For ages, this issue has dogged the community and those looking to bring in new residents to this beautiful haven in the prairies. You can imagine how excited everyone present was to share with us, then, that a plan is in the works to have a single utility company come on board – hopefully later this year – to provide the solution to this issue! This means that there are officially 0 reasons left to not consider life in Lyalta. Further, this sets The Lakes of Muirfield on track to move ahead with its growth plan, which should put the community on pace to expand at a rate similar to what’s been The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

seen in Langdon over the past 20 years. With The Lakes of Muirfield playing host to 820 doors, and similar projects in the area contributing another 3000 homes to the mix, Lyalta is poised to make the jump from hamlet to town status, and become the single largest growth node within the Wheatland County, as more and more people discover this prairie gem. Between the beautiful golf course, the friendly and welcoming community members, and the ambitious plan of growth plotted over the coming years, there’s a lot for prospective home buyers to be excited about when it comes to The Lakes of Muirfield. With homes starting in the $450k-$675k range (including lot and GST) – the vast majority of which back onto either green space or the golf course itself – there’s plenty to love about the idea of settling down in Lyalta. As I left The Lakes of Muirfield, I couldn’t help but feel as though I had witnessed the beginnings of something great. There’s a real community being built out there, and I couldn’t have been happier to be a part of its beginnings. Another Langdon Days has come and gone! Another big success, as people have come to expect. We had a great time in the parade before Yours Truly had to go to Red Deer. Why is it successful? Volunteers! We would like to start off this article by saluting our volunteers. Volunteers provide so many things to our communities, and moreover are the lifeblood of the way a community changes and evolves because of the vested interest these folks have in the communities they live in, or the associations they volunteer for. We end up teaching our children to become better citizens, it provides us with purpose, we make some of the best friends of our lives, and it brings us into the centre of our communities. This is an investment into our community. Langdon has a mighty group of volunteers, and it has been our distinct pleasure to work with many of you and to see you grow your community. This was a choice of the grassroots, and you came out with a force. As we are starting to think about going back to school (Yikes!), there are some very important issues on the docket. It’s time to start thinking about the upcoming election in October for your School Trustee. This is so important, and with all the changes in education brought forth by this government, it is imperative that this person represents you well. We have many issues with the lack of clarity in the curriculum redesign, testing, and transportation. Please make sure you check out the Alberta School Boards Association website at asba.ab.ca to understand the role and responsibilities of your trustee.

"In Alberta, citizens elect school boards to act for the legislature in their local schools and communities. School boards exist because of the belief that government – and decisions – made closest to the people being governed are the most effective.” Another interesting facet of what is going on in our education system is that right now we are governed by the School Act. The School Act sets out the goals, roles and responsibilities of Alberta’s Early Childhood Services to Grade 12 (ECS-12) education system. This is supposed to be replaced by the Alberta Education Act, which has been put on hold this last year and may continue to be upheld by this government. The Education Act was passed in 2012 after consulting 20,000 Albertans and has yet to be proclaimed by this government or previous governments. It is supposed to replace the School Act from 1988, which we are still using presently. The most frustrating part of this is that the desire of this government to hold up the enacting of the Education Act may have some merit. It could, but because this government does absolutely nothing to communicate with you or I, which is disrespectful, we have no idea as to why the government is waiting, and believe me I hear from principals and teachers about this all the time. The government is pandering to one or two groups who have issues, and instead of actually speaking with all the school authorities we are, as usual, left in the dark, wondering how the “nanny state” is going to decide what is best for us. This information is critical and I encourage every parent to spend a few moments looking at this and then advocate on behalf of your children. MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT AND PARTISAN POLITICS
The month of August was named for Julius Caeser’s adopted nephew Gaius Julius Caesar Octavius, who held the title “Augustus.” He named the month after himself. In the summer heat, the iron in France’s Eiffel Tower expands, making the tower grow more than 6 inches Popsicles, a popular summer treat, was accidentally invented by an 11-year-old boy in San Francisco in 1905. He left a glass of soda sitting outside and by the next morning the soda had frozen. He began selling them at an amusement park in New Jersey. In the U.S., cherry is the number 1 flavor.
On August 1, 2017 seventy-five days remain until the municipal elections take place in Alberta. One of the unique characteristics of these elections is the absence of partisan politics. It appears this absence contributes to another anomaly, the likelihood of incumbents winning repeated re-elections. A current area councillor recently brought this to my attention. We discussed how few new ideas emerge with the same group of people around the table.

A recent article by The University of Calgary School of Public Policy (March 2017) provides support regarding re-elections. It states a candidate's character and length of experience take on a larger priority in the voting decision. As long as citizens remain largely unperturbed by the overall actions of council, the risk of replacing them at election time may be seen as unnecessary risk. People chose to maintain the status quo.

Elections provide voters the opportunity to hold governments accountable for policies and actions. Historically, low levels of participation are experienced during municipal elections. Voters receive limited information on candidates' positions or council actions. I believe over the last 30 years, I didn't vote in at least 50% of municipal elections as the district councillor was acclaimed because they were the only person stepping forward. Globally, public dissatisfaction with the status quo has led with evolving technology are changing the political environment. The return of populist philosophy in Europe and the United States is evident. This caustic attitude is creeping into both provincial and federal politics. It is important for all levels of government to work together. They support the same population base at differing levels. The unique non-partisan nature of municipal politics creates an environment for councillors to work collaborate to maintain balance and stability. This serves the population much better than the fiery vitriol rampantly emerging both provincially and federally from partisan platforms. Is government to serve the people or to serve political parties allowing them to continue to form policy and increase the size of their coffers?

But if MLA Fildebrandt’s submission makes sense to the commission, then (Wheatland County) would gladly remain as Strathmore-Brooks in one electoral commission as it does seem to meet the objections of the commission in population and area." Of course, the size of the proposed Drumheller-Strathmore constituency may present a problem for effective engagement with area residents for an MLA. However, this is something already being experienced by residents within the current constituency. Is Fildebrandt's primary focus representing his constituents' concerns or partisan politics?
Speaking for Albertans Finally, I'm tired of politicians claiming to be speaking for Albertans. Please note: I am an Albertan. The majority of things currently bantered about does not represent my opinions and, likely, others. I don't want Trump politics in my province. I'm supportive of candidates who show a genuine interest in their constituents serving their best interests. Elected officials showing genuine interest in those within their electoral districts is a game changer. It is important for them to listen and not assume they are speaking on behalf of everyone. Take note of the silent majority. They're full of surprises.

NUTRITIONAL STRAWBERRY RECIPES Hello! Sherry Strawberry here. I’m happy to introduce you to my family – we’re probably the world’s favourite berry, so we’re worth getting to know! You know us best as “garden” or “common” strawberries, Fragaria x ananassa, in Latin. We’re not actually a berry at all, but what is known as an aggregate accessory fruit (doesn’t sound very appetizing, does it?), a hybrid species widely appreciated for our distinctive aroma, juiciness, sweetness, and bright red colour when fully ripe. We’re enjoyed all over the world, fresh or in prepared foods such as preserves, fruit juice, pies, and ice cream.
HISTORY
In 1714, a French engineer sent to Chile and Peru to monitor Spanish activities in those countries, “discovered" a cousin native to the Andes, known as Fragaria chiloensis – they were much larger than those species native to Europe. Amédée-François Frézier brought some samples from South America back to Paris with him. Quite by accident, these crossbred in the 1750s with Fragaria virginiana, imported from Virginia and growing in a nearby field. Et voila: we were the happy result. Initially, common or garden strawberries were a delicacy reserved for the wealthy. This remained the case until the mid-19th century, when railways allowed for rapid and relatively cheap transportation over great distances. It became economical to cultivate and ship strawberries to growing urban centers around the world. Prices fell, making us affordable for ordinary people. What could be more fitting? “Common” strawberries for “common” people?!
HEALTH
When we’re nicely ripened, we’re bursting with flavour. Turns out we’re also bursting with goodness, including a remarkable combination of phytonutrients, including anthocyanins, ellagitannins, flavonols, terpenoids, and phenolic acids – you’ll have to trust me when I tell you, technical names aside, these are all really, really good for you. How good? Well, research indicates strawberries can be of benefit in three health areas: prevention of cardiovascular diseases, decreasing the risk of type 2 diabetes, and helping prevent certain cancers, including breast, cervical, colon, and oesophageal. Several studies have indicated that when subjects consumed a cup of fresh strawberries a day for one to three months, fat oxidation in their cell membranes decreased, cholesterol was reduced, as was an enzyme that increases the risk of high blood pressure. And since chronic, excessive inflammation and oxidative stress are often factors in the development of cancer, it’s no surprise we’re helpful, given our antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrient content. Strawberries can also be helpful with bowel-related issues, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

STRAWBERRY PINEAPPLE SALSA
This tangy sweet salsa is perfect for grilled meat or chicken. The taste is sweet and sour. 1 cup (240 mL) pineapple 1 /2 cup (120 mL) mango 1 cup (240 mL) strawberries 1 tbsp (15 mL) ginger 2 tbsp (30 mL) lemon juice 2 tsp (10 mL) sugar Finely chop pineapple, mango, and strawberries. Mix together with the ginger and lemon juice. If the mixture is too thick, add a little water. Add sugar to taste.

If you have leftovers, store them in the freezer. For a quick breakfast, simply reheat muffins in the oven at 350°F/175°C for 10 minutes. 2 eggs 2/3 cup (160 mL) sugar 1/2 cup (120 mL) milk 1/4 cup (60 mL) plain yogurt 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla 1/2 stick butter, melted and cooled 2 cups (480 mL) flour 1 tbsp (15 mL) baking powder 1/4 tsp (1.25 mL) salt 1/4 tsp (1.25 mL) cinnamon 1 1/2 cups (360 mL) strawberries, hulled and cut in chunks Preheat oven to 375°F/200°C. Grease muffin tins or line with paper cups. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs and sugar until light. Add milk, yogurt, vanilla, and melted butter. Gently whisk. In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Add to milk mixture and stir just until flour disappears. Gently stir in berries. Spoon thick batter into muffin cups to the top. Bake about 25 minutes, until toothpick comes out clean. Invert and cool on rack.

6 ounces radiatori or rotelli pasta 1 medium apple, cored and cut into thin slices 1 tbsp (15 mL) lime or lemon juice 1/2 pound smoked turkey breast, cut into bite-size pieces 1 cup (240 mL) fresh strawberries, quartered 1/2 cup (120 mL) celery, sliced 1/4 cup (60 mL) fat-free, plain yogurt 2 tbsp (30 mL) mayonnaise or salad dressing 2 tbsp (30 mL) skim milk 4 tsp (20 mL) Dijon-style mustard 1/4 tsp (1.25 mL) celery seed 1 tbsp (15 mL) fresh marjoram leaves Prepare pasta as directed on the package. Rinse with cold water and drain. Toss apple slices with lemon juice to coat. Combine the cooked pasta, apple, turkey, strawberries and celery in a bowl. To make the dressing Mix yogurt, mayonnaise (or salad dressing), milk, mustard, and celery seed in a small bowl. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss gently to coat. Garnish with marjoram. Strawberries contain potassium, manganese, fluorine, copper, iron, and iodine. Potassium helps control heart rate and blood pressure. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase. Copper is required in the production of red blood cells. Strawberries are low in calories and fats, but are a rich source of many health promoting phytonutrients, minerals, and vitamins that are essential for optimum health. Strawberries have significantly high amounts of phenolic flavonoid phytochemicals called anthocyanins and ellagic acid. Scientific studies show that consumption of strawberries may help combat cancer, aging, inflammation, and neurological diseases. Fresh strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin-C, a powerful natural antioxidant. Consumption of fruits rich in vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents, counter inflammation, and scavenge harmful free radicals. Strawberries are rich in B-complex vitamins, including vitamin B-6, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and folic acid. These vi-
tamins help the body metabolize carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Strawberries contain vitamin A, vitamin E, and many health promoting flavonoid poly-phenolic antioxidants, including lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-carotene in small amounts. These compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species that play a role in aging and various disease processes.
