Two sisters Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit the family ranch. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble. In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull so that they can breed their own stock. The brunette balances their chequebook, and then takes their last $600 out west to where a man has a prized bull for sale. Upon leaving, she tells her sister, “When I get there, if I decide buy the bull, I’ll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home.” The brunette arrives at the man’s ranch, inspects the bull and decides she does want to buy it. The man tells her that he can sell it for $599, no less. After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news. She walks into the telegraph office, and says, “I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I’ve bought a bull for our ranch. I need her to hitch the trailer to our pick-up truck and drive out here so we can haul it home.” The telegraph operator explains that he’ll be glad to help then adds, “It’s just 99 cents a word”. Well, after paying for the bull, the brunette only has $1 left. She realizes that he’ll only be able to send her sister one word. After thinking for a few minutes, she nods, and says, “I want you to send her the word, ‘comfortable’. The telegraph operator shakes his head. “How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pick-up and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her the word, ‘comfortable’?” The brunette explains, “My sister is blonde. She’ll read it slowly.”

From the Publishers: Oh, dear; it can’t be August already! Only 31 more days until the official end of Summer Holidays for the kids! I know, this can also be a very happy time for parents – kind of a double edged sword situation!!! We have enjoyed the BEST July I can remember, the type of weather we use to have in the ‘old days’!! Long, hot days and spectacular lightning storms in the evening; I absolutely LOVE thunder and lightning storms! The absolute power and magnificence of nature – it is aweinspiring and impressive. This month’s Family Page is full of really fun ideas to help with the heat and keep your kids busy; summer is the perfect recipe for all to have a great time together outside in the sun. Luscious Joys will give you a few pickling ideas and My FFFF is all about pickles – we are just picklishious this month! Please read Morse Code on Page 32, as Randy has shared the most beautiful song in memory of those lost in the Mud Slide by Kaslo – life is most fleeting; please enjoy every moment. The most significant question we can ask ourselves is what the most important thing in life is – we tend to ask this question after a tragedy. Jody has been thinking about the importance of values and has some questions we should all ponder, and Jock’s column will bring back a few memories for all of you. If you haven’t taken advantage of all the free concert tickets we have been giving away on our Facebook page, don’t fret! We have many more concerts to share with you; but you must visit our website and leave us a really good joke – funny and clean, and something we can share in the magazine – we are getting tired eyes scouring the net for funny stuff for you!! We could use some help!! Anyhow, please remember to hug everyone you love and tell them every single day you love them; you never want to have regrets and heartbreak in your life. We are thinking of you, Randy – you are amazing in our eyes! Kathryn, Aleesha and Denise

Has it really been 25 years?

As we watch and cheer our amazing summer athletes at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, I can’t help but think how time flies! The Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary is celebrating its 25th Anniversary season. February 13, 2013 will mark the 25th birthday of the opening ceremonies of our “best ever” Winter Games. Do you remember Michael “Eddie the Eagle” Edwards and his coke bottled glasses? How about the Italian Stallion, flamboyant skier Alberto Tomba? He was so high on himself that he showed up at the Olympic Saddledome and asked German figure skater Katerina Witt for a date. Katerina also shot down Gord Gillies (Global TV), who proposed marriage at a news conference. The Jamaican bobsleigh team was a huge hit, and then there was the sad story of American speed skater Dan Jansen. A favourite to win gold in the 500m and 1000m events, Janzen learned just before competition that is older sister had died of cancer. In spite of his grief, Janzen decided to race but fell in both competitions. Calgary was a much different city back in 1988. We still had a small town feel as our population was under a half million. Ralph Klein was the mayor, former football player Don Getty was the premier, acid wash jeans were all the rage, The Crosby show was the number one hit on television, and the Flames were a powerhouse!

and United Communities and will be hosted by Doan and Steve Armitage from CBC. Short Track Speed Skating was a demonstration sport in 1988. The Samsung Short Track World Cup will highlight the competition schedule at the Olympic Oval, as the best skaters on the planet will compete on the fastest ice in the world in October. It’s the first world cup of the short track season and it’s the first Short Track World Cup in Calgary since 2003. The Oval will also host a Long Track World Cup in January. To mark the 25th Anniversary of the Calgary Winter Olympics, the Oval is also planning a huge public skating party on February 13, 2013. The Olympic Caldron at the University of Calgary will be lit. LED candles replicating the hand held Olympic torches will be handed out and I am sure David Foster’s 1988 Olympic theme will be playing on the speakers during the free skate. Who knows, after reading this article, maybe Calgary’s politicians will want to get involved? Canadian Water Ski Championships A must-see event is hitting Southern Alberta this month. The 61st annual Canadian Water Ski Championships will take place at the Predator Bay Water Ski Club just outside of Calgary August 13 – 16, 2012. Over 125 athletes will compete for national titles in slalom, tricks, jump and overall. Predator Bay is a beautiful man made water ski facility located on the Bow River near De Winton.

So what is our current Mayor, Naheed Nenshi doing to honour the anniversary of the 1988 Winter Olympics? At this point, absolutely nothing! Unlike the city, the Olympic Oval has big plans to celebrate this season. On September 27, 2012 (the day the Oval first opened to the public in 1987), the Oval will host a Gala in support of the high performance sport programs and athlete bursary fund. The Olympic Oval Bursary Fund was founded in 2004 by Catriona Le May Doan to assist athletes fund competition travel fees, new training equipment, athletic clothing, rent and food. The Olympic Oval Gala is presented by Morrison Homes Page 12

A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. The next week the man realized that he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 am for a flight to Europe. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence, he finally wrote on a piece of paper, “Please wake me tomorrow morning at 5:00 am”. The next morning the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00am, and that he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn’t woke him when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. It said, “It’s 5:00am, wake up.”

Lessons I have learned I’ve learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in. I’ve learned that no matter how much I care, some people are just jerks. I’ve learned that it takes years to build up trust, and only suspicion, not proof, to destroy it.

I’ve learned that you can keep puking long after you think you’re finished. I’ve learned that we are responsible for what we do, unless we are celebrities.

I’ve learned that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades, and there had better be a lot of money to take its place.

I’ve learned that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you’re down will be the ones who do.

Before you speak... THINK

I’ve learned that we don’t have to ditch bad friends because their dysfunction makes us feel better about ourselves.

T – Is it True? H – Is it Helpful? I – Is it Inspiring? N – Is it Necessary? K – Is it Kind?

I’ve learned that no matter how you try to protect your children, they will eventually get arrested and end up in the local paper. I’ve learned that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon and all the less important ones just never go away.

Reduce the risk – Protect yourself FROM West Nile virus Protecting yourself from West Nile virus doesn’t have to be this complicated... You don’t have to go overboard to protect yourself from West Nile virus. Just follow a few simple steps to avoid mosquito bites. West Nile virus (WNv) is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause mild symptoms or, in rare cases, a more serious West Nile neurological syndrome. Mosquitoes become infected with WNv when they feed on infected birds. Only three of the 43 species of mosquitoes present in Alberta are likely to carry the virus. WNv is not known to be spread by birds or other animals to people, or by direct person-to-person contact. The risk of getting WNv in Alberta remains low. Even in other provinces where the virus is present, only a small percentage of mosquitoes will carry the virus, and only a small number of people bitten by an infected mosquito will develop serious illness. Around the house: Keep mosquitoes out of the house by following these simple steps: • Check all window and door screens; repair any holes. • Keep outside doors closed. Consider installing an automatic door closer if your family forgets to shut the door. • Use mosquito netting or screened enclosures to let your family enjoy protected outdoor living during periods of high mosquito activity. The symptoms: Most people who become infected with West Nile virus will experience no symptoms, or a mild fever. • Very few individuals will experience the more severe symptoms of West Nile neurological syndrome. • The Provincial Laboratory of Public Health will provide results on tests of human samples within one week. West Nile fever: West Nile fever is a mild illness. Symptoms occur three to 15 days following the bite of an infected mosquito, and can include: • Fever; • Headache; • Body aches; • Skin rash; and • Swollen glands. Here is the scene: The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a church elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun wrote a note, ‘Take only ONE. God is watching’ and put it on the apple tray. Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written another note, ‘Take all you want. God is watching the apples.’

History Answers

Ancient Egypt was inhabited by mummies and they all wrote in hydraulics. They lived in the Sarah Dessert and travelled by Camelot. The climate of the Sarah is such that the inhabitants have to live elsewhere. The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we wouldn’t have history. The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a female moth. Socrates was a famous Greek teacher who went around giving people advice. They killed him. Socrates died from an overdose of wedlock. After his death, his career suffered a dramatic decline. It was an age of great inventions and discoveries. Gutenberg invented removable type and the Bible. Another important invention was the circulation of blood. Sir Walter Raleigh is a historical figure because he invented cigarettes and started smoking. And Sir Francis Drake circumcised the world with a 100 foot clipper. Joan of Arc was burnt to a steak and was canonized by Bernard Shaw for reasons I don’t really understand. The English and French still have problems. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Geography Answers

Q: Name the four seasons. A: Salt, pepper, mustard and vinegar.

Q: Explain one of the processes by which water can be made safe to drink. A: Flirtation makes water safe to drink because it removes large pollutants like grit, sand, dead sheep and canoeists. Q: How is dew formed? A: Certain areas of the dessert are cultivated by irritation. Then the sun shines down on the leaves and makes them perspire. Q: What is a planet? A: A body of earth surrounded by sky. Q: What causes the tides in the oceans? A: The tides are a fight between the Earth and the Moon. All water tends to flow towards the moon, because there is no water on the moon, and nature abhors a vacuum. I forget where the sun joins in the fight.

Back to School, Beware of Headache or Migraine; Try Self-Massage! By Cynthia Barnesky

There are many adults, teenagers, and even kids who are now experiencing headaches and migraines caused from too much stress when it comes to going back to school. Any headache and migraine sufferer can tell you first hand it is not something they would want anyone to go through. The pain can take over your life! Those who suffer from headaches and migraines are the only ones who really understand the pain and how much they want it to leave. Research has proven that most headaches come from tension, stress, dehydration and weather change. They have found self-massage and self-trigger point massage help out a lot. At the first signs of a headache or migraine, make sure you have had enough water. Then you can try self-massage or selftrigger point massage to your neck, head, shoulders and upper back muscles. Also, try some pressure point massage to some areas of the face, head, around the ears, and on both sides of the neck; this helps release the tense muscles, relaxing your body and your headache will start going away! Please be aware of your sense of knowing if something is working or not. Your body speaks to you; you just need to listen. Try some self-help methods like; ice, heat, Lavender, crystals and never give up! You need to find out why the headaches and migraines are showing up. Try your best and if you are just not certain, go see a professional for help! Page 18

What Is Acne? Acne is a disease that affects the skin’s oil glands. The small holes in your skin (pores) connect to oil glands under the skin. These glands make an oily substance called sebum. The pores connect to the glands by a canal called a follicle. Inside the follicles, oil carries dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. A thin hair also grows through the follicle and out to the skin. When the follicle of a skin gland clogs up, a pimple grows. Most pimples are found on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Acne is not a serious health threat. How Does Acne Develop? Sometimes, the hair, sebum, and skin cells clump together into a plug. The bacteria in the plug cause swelling. Then when the plug starts to break down, a pimple grows. What Causes Acne? The cause of acne is unknown. Doctors think certain factors might cause it: • The hormone increase in teenage years (this can cause the oil glands to plug up more often) • Hormone changes during pregnancy • Starting or stopping birth control pills • Heredity (if your parents had acne, you might get it, too) • Some types of medicine • Greasy makeup. How Should People With Acne Care for Their Skin? • Clean skin gently. Use a mild cleanser in the morning, evening, and after heavy workouts. Scrubbing the skin does not stop acne. It can even make the problem worse. • Try not to touch your skin. People who squeeze, pinch, or pick their pimples can get scars or dark spots on their skin. • Shave carefully. If you shave, you can try both electric and safety razors to see which works best. With safety razors, use a sharp blade. Also, it helps to soften your beard with soap and water before putting on shaving cream. Shave lightly and only when you have to. • Choose makeup carefully. All makeup should be oil free. Look for the word “noncomedogenic” on the label. This means that the makeup will not clog up your pores. But some people still get acne even if they use these products. • Shampoo your hair regularly. If your hair is oily, you may want to shampoo daily. What Things Can Make Acne Worse? • Changing hormone levels in teenage girls and adult women 2 to 7 days before their period starts • Pollution and high humidity • Squeezing or picking at pimples • Hard scrubbing of the skin. What Are Some Myths About the Causes of Acne? There are many myths about what causes acne. Dirty skin and stress do not cause acne. Also, chocolate and greasy foods do not cause acne in most people. Drawing God

A nursery school teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child’s work. As she got to little Sarah, who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. Sarah replied, ‘I’m drawing God.’ The teacher paused and said, ‘But no one knows what God looks like.’ Sarah replied, ‘They will in a minute.’

Marlon asked the teacher to help him get his shoes on at the end of a busy day. After quite a struggle with the shoes, which were a little tight, Tessa finally got them on. ‘They’re on the wrong way round, miss,’ mumbled Marlon. She realises that he is right; they are on the wrong feet. Staying calm, she and swaps them over for him. ‘They’re not my shoes, miss,’ Marlon murmurs again. Tessa fights hard to keep her cool and asks Marlon why he hadn’t told her before. She then kneels down again and helps him pull the shoes off. ‘These aren’t my shoes, they’re my brother’s and Mum told me not to tell anyone.’ At this point Tessa can feel tears coming. She helps him back into his shoes. She gets him into his coat and wraps his scarf round his neck. ‘Where are your gloves, Marlon?’ asks Tessa quietly. ‘Oh, miss, I always put them in my shoes!’

Birds are intelligent animals. In the animal kingdom, birds rank near the top when it comes to smarts. Their inquisitive nature makes them facsinating, captivating pets. Birds bond with their owners, constantly learning from them, and often delight them with surprisingly human-like antics. When is the last time a dog looked up at you and said “Hello? They are relatively easy to care for. As opposed to four-legged pets that typically roam free within their owners homes, birds are much easier to care for. They can be placed inside their cages when you are at work or busy. Many people prefer the convenience of cleaning a cage once daily to scooping a litter box or having to go for walks outside every few hours. Birds are fairly simple to train. Because of their above average intelligence, birds can be a joy to train and are typically eager to learn new things from their Page 22

The Newsy Neighbour

Pets

owners. Since birds are relatively small, training them can be less physically demanding than working with larger creatures, making them a good choice for the young, elderly, or disabled. They require minimal grooming. Birds are naturally very hygienic animals, and they preen their feathers daily to keep them shiny and clean. Bird owners can usually maintain their pet’s health and good looks with a quick nail trim now and then and a shower of plain water once or twice each week. Birds are extremely social creatures. If you want a pet that will bond strongly with you, a bird is a wonderful choice. Given proper training and socialization, birds can be every bit as loving and affectionate as a cat or dog. Many pet birds are inseparable from their owners. Birds are fairly inexpensive to feed. It’s important to provide pet birds with a high quality pelleted diet, but they can also benefit greatly from foods that their owners share with them. When you serve fresh fruits or vegetables in your home, you can set a portion aside for your bird’s meal. This provides the pet with additional nutrients and variety, and allows owners to “stretch out the commercial diets they buy. Just make sure that the foods you share with your pet aren’t toxic to birds!! Pet birds are attractive to look at. Obvious as it may seem, the aesthetic value of owning a bird should not be underestimated. It was, after all, a bird’s beauty that attracted mankind to them in the first place. Birds display beautiful colours and comical behaviour patterns that are interesting to watch and have even proven to lower stress levels in individuals! They are long-lived companions. Those who have experienced the heartbreak of losing a long time pet are often not eager to repeat the process any time soon. Many bird species live extraordinarily long lives, some living more than 100 years! This often eases the concerns of people who want to make sure they adopt a pet that they can love and enjoy for a very long time.

The Pouty Puppy -Bauer My life gets worse and worse every day. Today, she kept putting delicious cheese in my face and when I went to eat it, she took it away and ate it herself. She finds this funny; I do not. This morning they left the house without me. They were gone a long time. I had two naps in this time so it had to be at least 2 hours. 2 hours alone. Do you see the awful way I am treated? When they got home, I couldn’t help myself – I was so excited. I jumped and cried and fell onto my back to get much-deserved belly rubs. I was beside myself with excitement. Then… just as quickly as they got home, I remembered that they left me. Alone!! The audacity! I quickly sulked to my perch on the couch and I glared at them. How dare you leave me? I will glare at them until they feel bad and offer me a treat. It’s the least they can do. Hmm… no treat… what is that about? I shall turn my back to them and they can look at my bum instead of my beautiful face. That’ll teach them to mess with me. … it’s silent… where are they? What’s going on? I look up and Mommy is smiling at me. I love her. WAIT! I do not love her – she brought her into this house. This is a trick. Something is happening… but I can’t help it; I’m so curious. So I jump down from my perch on the couch and I trot over to Mommy. I look up at her… she is still smiling. She bends down so that her face is so close to mine and she whispers, “Do you want to go for a walk?” I CANNOT CONTAIN MY EXCITEMENT!! I spin in circles, I jump, I bark, I spin in more circles. I am SO EXCITED!! I will be pouty when we get back home, but for now… I will enjoy the fresh air. … and now to attack that leash… Til next month, Bauer

Bull A farmer goes in half with a friend to buy a bull so he can increase his stock. A couple of weeks later, the friend comes by to see how his investment is doing. The farmer complains that the bull just eats grass and won’t look at the cows. His friend suggests that a veterinarian have a look at the bull. The following week, his friend returns to see if the vet helped. The farmer looks delighted: “The bull has taken care of all my cows, broke through the fence, and has even serviced all my neighbour’s cows!” “Wow,” says his friend, “What did the vet do to that bull?” “Just gave him some pills’” said the farmer. “What kind of pills?” asked his friend. “I don’t know, but they sort of taste like peppermint.”

CAT GOES TO HEAVEN

One day a cat dies of natural causes and goes to heaven. Greeting him the Lord says, “You’ve lived a good life. If there is any way I can make your stay in Heaven more comfortable, please let Me know.” The cat thinks for a minute and says “Well, all my life I lived with a poor family and had to sleep on a hard wooden floor...” The Lord stops the cat and says “Say no more!” Just then a wonderful fluffy pillow appears and the cat contentedly wanders off to find a good place to nap. A few days later six mice killed in a tragic farming accident go to heaven. The Lord is there to greet them with the same offer. The mice answer: “All of our lives we’ve been chased. We’ve had to run from cats, from tractors, even from that farmer’s wife with her broom. We’re tired of running...” “Say no more!” The Lord replies. In a flash, each mouse is fitted with a beautiful new pair of roller skates, and they skate happily off to explore the Heavenly landscape. About a week later The Lord stops by to see the cat and finds him snoozing away. He gently wakes the cat and asks, “How are things since you got here?” The cat stretches, yawns, and replies “Oh, it is wonderful here. I get a lot of great sleep on this pillow, and those Meals On Wheels you’ve been sending are the BEST!!!”

FAMILY PAGE AUGUST 2012 Holy heat wave!! Instead of sitting in the house complaining about the high temperatures outside, have some fun! There is always a way to turn a bad thing into a good thing, especially when our summers are soooo short. Outdoor water games are a great way for kids to cool off during hot summer days, but water games can also promote balance, problem solving, coordination and teamwork. Just make sure everyone is supervised; it’s all fun AND GAMES until someone gets hurt! WATER BALLOON CATCH This wet and wacky game is as refreshing as a dip in the pool on a hot day. Even if you drop the ball, you're still cool. What you'll need: Gallon-size milk jugs (one for each player) Tape Water balloons How to play: Create the catchers by cutting the bottom off a gallon-size milk jug (one for each player), taping the cut edges. Fill a bunch of water balloons to the size of a grapefruit. See how many times you can toss the balloons back and forth without breaking them or how far you can throw and catch them.

COFFEE CAN RELAY You need two coffee cans with small holes drilled in the bottom of each one and four 5-gallon buckets to play this relay. Place two empty buckets at one end of the relay area and two water-filled buckets at the other end. Divide the children into two teams and line one team up beside each of the two full buckets. Instruct the front team member to fill his coffee can with water from the team bucket and run, holding the can over his head to pour the water into the team's empty bucket, before returning the empty can to the next runner. Either set a number of turns for each team member or continue the relay until the first bucket is empty. The object of the coffee can relay is to end up with more water in your team's second bucket than your opponents. The game is more fun if the kids don't know about the holes in the coffee cans.

WATER LIMBO Set up a water hose in a grassy area. Line kids up as in traditional limbo. An adult is in charge of the water hose, shooting a powerful stream of water for kids to limbo under. Adult starts with the hose high, and then lowers the stream of water after each round. Losers, of course, get soaked! Don’t forget the Limbo music on your iPhone!

TOY WASH What you’ll need: Children in swim suits Washable toys, water Small buckets Sponge and bubbles Instead of a car wash, have a toy wash! On a hot day, take all washable toys outside and let children have fun washing them. Children cool off... and YOU get clean toys!!!

GET COOL WITH A PINAQUA! What you’ll need: 10 gallon-trash bag Water Rope A tree limb or play structure A bandana and a broom. When temperatures soar and the afternoon gets hot and sticky, beat the heat with the fun of a pinaqua. Have children dress in swimsuits so they are ready to get wet. Fill the trash bag with one or two gallons of water and then knot the bag. Tie one end of the rope beneath the knot, toss the free end over a tree branch or structure and then tie it securely.

TO PLAY, each child takes a turn being blindfolded, gently spun a few times and then getting three whacks at the pinaqua with the broom. The winner is the one who manages to break the bag and unleash the tidal wave.

Happy August – the last month of summer vacation! Take the time to enjoy every single moment and have some FUN! Kathryn Hartwell

Luscious Joys By: Kathryn Hartwell My garden is starting to explode and in my excitement I have been dreaming of all the creative ways I can prepare my beautiful vegetables to preserve them so that I can enjoy them all winter long. I’m really on the bandwagon and motivated about this idea, so I have also written my Fabulous–Fantastic–Favourite– Funny–Frivolous – oh, what the heck; whatever-it’s-called column (*hick-up*! Ha-ha! We’re feeling a little pickled this month!) all about pickles! So, in keeping with the theme, Luscious Joys is filled with a bounty of Luscious Pickling recipes (hick-up! Ha-ha!). Don’t let pickling frighten you; people have been doing it for hundreds of years, and I will never forget sneaking into my grandmother’s cold room in the basement of the old farm house to gaze upon all those incredibly beautiful jars filled with mouth-watering pickled beets, cucumbers, carrots, beans and peppers. I can still see the dirt floor and the potatoes and other assorted vegetables stored safely in their bins. The thing is, you don’t have to pickle just vegetables (if you’re not a pickle fan… which is hard to believe! But there are people out there who do not like them!), you can pickle fruit too! Just think about sweet savory chutney, absolutely fabulous with a slab of pork, leg of lamb or chicken. And think about the last time you had a Pickled Crab Apple (wow, way too long ago to remember!) and I know my children are now thinking – way too much pickling, mom! Hick-up! Ha-ha! Well, to let you know I am not just dreaming this stuff up, I have included some of those long-lost pickling recipes. Make a family day out of it – make the kids do all the peeling, stuffing, etc. and you can sit back and supervise (like that would happen) and teach them something they were too afraid to tackle or not motivated to try on their own. It is a lot of work, but also very rewarding and fun when the troops are all helping.

Pickled Crab Apples 8 lbs. crab apples, 6 cups vinegar, 8 cups brown sugar, 2 teaspoon cloves, 1 stick of cinnamon. Boil together vinegar, brown sugar, cloves and cinnamon. Leave the stems on crab apples. Add to syrup and boil until fruit is tender. Remove the fruit and pack into jars. Pour in syrup. Seal. Note: not recommended for use with typical garden varieties of ornamental crab apples, which are not really suitable for consumption.

Pickled Pears 4 quarts fresh pears, 2 pounds white sugar, 2 cups vinegar, 1/2-ounce cinnamon, whole, 1/4-ounce whole cloves Dip the pears into hot water and remove the skins. Remove the calyx end and leave the stems intact. Boil sugar, vinegar, and cinnamon for 20 minutes. Add fruit carePage 30

However the Virgo needs balance in their lives otherwise they may become short-tempered, impatient and selfserving. Virgo’s are excellent teammates in work and social activities. Every now and then we get a wakeup call. EEvery now and then we get a wakeup call; a reminder of how fragile our hold on this life truly is, of how quickly all those small, daily things we fool ourselves into believing are important are suddenly revealed for the utter trivia they actually are. The recent epic mudslide that suddenly, violently, took four lives in remote Johnsons Landing, near the village of Kaslo, where I live, was precisely such a wakeup call. Rather than writing a column for this month’s Newsy Neighbour, here are the lyrics from a song I wrote last year after hiking from Johnsons Landing to (spectacular) Frye Creek Canyon. I sang it last night at a benefit concert for the survivors and families of those killed – the mother of the two girls was sitting right in front of me as I sang; a moment I will never forget. Wherever you are as you read this, stop for a moment and think: are you living the life you want to live, right now? Have you made it clear to those nearest and dearest to you how much they mean to you, right now? Are you happy, right now? If your answers to any of those questions is “no,” then my gentle advice to you is “do something about it” – right now!

THE MEADOW I have walked the forests where the mighty cedars grow, clinging to the feet of mighty peaks; I have strode the beaches where the waves tug to and fro, where Nature from her true heart speaks. I have held a baby while I sang her to sleep, sending her tofream through the night; I have held my true love with passion so deep, that I fear Imay have held her too tight. I found love under every mossy stone, As I strode through a lazy Spring; I lay in the barley, heard the pipes’ distant drone, From the meadow, where the meadowlark sings. I have always wondered what lay ‘round the bend, what treaurePage 32

slay in store for me; I have always wandered toward the rainbow’s end, an endlessquest to see what I might see. I have foundsuch beauty words cannot describe, the joys that those views did hold; I have witnessed grace while all the while I did strive, tofind happiness and then grow old. I found love under every mossy stone, As I strode through a lazy Spring; I lay in the barley, heard the pipes’ distant drone, From the meadow, where the meadowlark sings. There is no start or finish to this journey my friend, noprize at the end of your days; The Universe like love has no beginning or end, count yourblessings let me show you the ways. I found love under every mossy stone, As I strode through a lazy Spring; I lay in the barley, heard the pipes’ distant drone, From the meadow, where the meadowlark sings. www.felker-dunbarlaw.ca “The Crowfoot School celebrated its 100th anniversary on June 30 with over 300 people in attendance. The original ‘Crowfoot School District’ comprised an area of 4 miles by 4 miles; some eight miles east of Strathmore and received its name from the headwaters of the Crowfoot Creek. On May 6, 1912 the doors opened for the first classes and instruction continued for another 33years. The ladies of the district, “The Crowfoot Good Will Club”, organized in 1944, realized that the empty building offered a perfect venue for their meetings and community social activities and purchased it. Due to their foresight, the Little White Schoolhouse on the Hill was rescued, and because the building was there, a strong community developed around it. So it was that in 2012, the Crowfoot Community Association decided to pay tribute to the pioneers who built the school with a series of old fashioned events - supper, races for the children and a ball tournament. At 5pm, the 1912 school teacher Miss Willene Fife, played by Ann Scheer, rang the school bell and called everyone ‘back to class’. When they were all assembled, MC John Sanden asked Barb Praekerto to give thanks to God for our blessings of the past and for the future, and in keeping with the custom of the Ladies’ Club, she led everyone in the reading of “The Optimist Creed”. The Program featured speakers John Scheer, Ralph Tiede and Spencer Hilton, who told stories about the history of the school from 1909- 2012. Ann Scheer recalled the story of the 21 ladies who formed the Good Will Club and spoke of their intuition, dedication and spunk. Dorie Harwood, the only living Charter member of the Crowfoot Good Will Club was thrilled to receive a corsage and take part in the Cake Cutting Ceremony with representatives of several generations of her family. A monument to the early pioneers constructed of a marvelous arrangement of old bricks from the original chimney with a granite inscription and silhouette ironwork was dedicated by Beth Vergouwen and Ken Nelson, who were the committee that had arranged for its design. A delicious steak BBQ dinner was served by Barb Praeker and her family, the proceeds of which was presented by Lynne Hilton on behalf of the Crowfoot Community to the family of Kyle Ruppe, who is fighting ALS. Wheatland County BOOKKEEPING BUSINESS Due to restructuring Part or whole available Please reply stating purchase interest level to bookkeeping4sale@gmail.com Cookbook, containing recipes from Crowfoot families up to 3rd and 4th generations, produced by Ann Scheer, Joan Tiede and AlanWest, went on sale that day and garnered enough sales to start making a profit. Ben Armstrong, a County councillor, presented a plaque and Jason Hale, our local MLA brought congratulations and a scroll from both the Alberta Government and the Canadian Government. Drew Gregory provided great country western music all during supper and right up until about 10:00pm when the ball games finished. A large bonfire in the fire pit was going by then and the evening concluded with fireworks and more visiting until midnight. Visitors came from as far away as Doha, Qatar, Spruce Grove, Swan Hills, Grande Prairie, Hay River NWT and Dawson City, Yukon, as well as Bassano, Beaumont, Red Deer, Rosebud, High River, Rockyford, Carseland and Strathmore. It was especially nice to have in attendance former older members of the Ladies Club, Marie Louise Praeker, Hillevi Ruppe, Nina Newell, Vera Morgan, Dorothy Woldum, Florice Desmet and Eileen Drummond. In this centennial year of 2012, itis a pleasure to commemorate those who built the Crowfoot School and Communityand congratulate those who kept alive the spirit of the Crowfoot Good WillClub- those who were “too large for worry, too noble for anger, toostrong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.”

Things to know for weight loss So you want to lose weight, and you want to lose it now! Did you know that safe weight loss for most people is 1-2 lbs a week? If you are losing much more than 2 lbs a week you could be losing lean muscle mass. Why is lean muscle mass so important? Lean muscle can make your body look more fit or toned, but most importantly it helps increase your metabolism or your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This essentially means the more lean muscle you have, the higher your metabolism, the more food you can eat. Who doesn’t want to be able to eat more food and lose weight? I know you’re probably thinking this can’t be true, I need to eat less food to lose weight. Yes, you can lose “weight” if you cut your calories, but you may be losing precious lean muscle mass and your body fat is probably staying the same, potentially making you “skinny fat.” When you drastically cut calories, your body goes into starvation mode. It starts to use up or get rid of any expensive energy sources, and muscle is a calorie hog. The BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is very basically how many calories your body needs to function properly each day. To find out what your Basal Metabolic Rate is go to AnndeeKing.com In short, there is a huge difference between “weight loss” and “fat loss”. Safe fat loss with healthy eating habits and exercise is 1-2 lbs a week. At the pace of 2 lbs a week, you’re losing 8lbs a month. This pace is perfect for making small life style changes that ultimately stick with you for life. Anndee King

tips to stay cool 75% humidity – are you kidding me?! I turn on my instant genius–knows-everything computer, looking for tips for staying cool other than installing an air conditioner for my home. There has to be easy ways to stay cool! As temperatures soar and we wither away (not always a bad thing – maybe I’ll drop a few pounds!), thousands head off on holidays to make the most of the long, hot summer days. I discovered 11 ways to keep you cool in the heatwave: 1. Eat small meals and eat more often. The larger the meal, the more metabolic heat your body creates to break down the food. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increase metabolic heat. 2. Run your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds, every couple of hours. Because a main vein passes through this area, it helps cool the blood. 3. Eat spicy food. Although this may be the last thing you fancy in hot weather, curries and chillies can stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, which cools the body down. 4. While you’re out, keep the curtains drawn to keep the windows from heating your home up like a greenhouse. 5. Get some Mentholatum Migraine Ice patches. These soft gel patches, designed to soothe headaches, come into their own during heatwaves as they instantly reduce skin temperature when applied. 6. Drink chrysanthemum tea. Practitioners say chrysanthemum is a cooling herb, which clears the head. 7. Sleep on a feather or down pillow with a cotton pillowcase. Synthetic pillows will retain heat. 8. The night before you go out for the day in the sun, roll some damp flannels up and pop them in the freezer. Take them with you in a plastic bag. Then, when you start to feel hot, unwrap them and place them over your face. 9. Buy a Chillow. It’s a thin, soft, thermo-regulating leather device that pops into your pillow to cool it down. In studies, Chillow users fell asleep an average of 68% faster. 10. Try a Native American herbal remedy called Black Cohosh, which has been clinically proven to relieve hot flashes and night sweats in menopausal women. Recent research suggests it works on the hypothalamus, where it may help regulate body temperature. 11. Ditch your duvet and sleep under a sheet instead. Even better, put your sheets in a plastic bag and stick them in the fridge a couple of hours before going to bed. As we fall asleep, our body temperature lowers, which is why it’s difficult to sleep in hot weather. Cold sheets straight from the fridge should help you sleep better. Brrrr – as long as it works!!! www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Breast Pain Is anything scarier for a woman than breast pain? The first thought is the worst thought, as we hear the breast cancer stats every day. But don’t despair; breast pain is one of the most common breast problems. Pain can range from mild to severe, and sometimes requires treatment. It may affect one or both breasts, or can radiate into the armpit. In general, breast pain is not a sign of cancer. Breast pain (mastalgia) is a common complaint among women. You might describe your breast pain as chronic tenderness, sharp burning or tightness in your breast tissue. The pain may be constant or it may occur only occasionally. Some women have severe breast pain, occurring more than five days a month; severe breast pain may even persist

throughout the menstrual cycle. Postmenopausal women sometimes have breast pain, but the symptom is more common in younger, premenopausal women and perimenopausal women. Most times, breast pain signals a noncancerous (benign) breast condition and rarely signifies breast cancer. Still, unexplained breast pain that doesn’t go away after your next menstrual cycle, or persists after menopause needs to be evaluated by your doctor. Most cases of breast pain are classified as either cyclic or noncyclic. Each type of breast pain has distinct characteristics. Cyclic breast pain • Clearly related to the menstrual cycle. • Described as dull, heavy or aching. • Often accompanied by breast swelling or lumpiness. • Usually affects both breast, particularly the upper, outer portions, and can radiate to the underarm. • Intensifies during the two weeks leading up to the start of your period, then eases up afterward. • Usually affects premenopausal women in their 20s and 30s and perimenopausal women in their 40s.

Noncyclic breast pain • Unrelated to the menstrual cycle. • Described as tight, burning or sore. • Constant or intermittent. • Usually affects one breast, in a localized area, but may spread more diffusely across the breast. • Usually affects postmenopausal women. Extramammary breast pain Extramammary breast pain feels like it originates in the breast, but its source is actually somewhere else. Pulling a muscle in your chest, for example, can cause pain in your chest wall or rib cage. When to see a doctor Make an appointment with your doctor if: • You have breast pain that persists daily for more than a couple of weeks. • Your breast pain is localized to one specific area of your breast. • Your breast pain seems to be getting worse over time. • Your breast pain interferes with daily activities. • Although it’s not a common symptom of breast can cer, localized breast pain is associated with breast cancer in a small percentage of women. Water Safety The sound of happy children splashing noisily is one of the summer’s most joyful sounds. Kids (and adults) love water! Keep water play safe with tips from the Canadian Red Cross: •All kids under 5, and any non-expert swimmers, should wear floatation devices. •Firm rule—no head-first diving. Feet first - always! •Pools, ponds, etc. should be fenced and locked to avoid toddler mishaps. •Know the currents and shore drop-offs before you go in. •No running on the pool deck. Studies show that the earlier kids get comfortable in the water, the safer they are. You can take swim classes with your toddler, and solo classes can start at age four. For kids under 7 (or older, uncertain swimmers), consider swim suits with built-in flotation that naturally rolls wearers onto their backs, with faces pointed towards the sky. Kids’ water safety rules are good for adults, too— with the added reminder that swimming and alcohol aren’t the safest combination. The Newsy Neighbour

AGES AND STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT TWENTY-FOUR TO THIRTY MONTHS By Jeanette MacKay, Reprinted This is the seventh in a series of articles on child development written to help parents and caregivers recognize and understand the ages and stages of a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development during the first five years. These are only guidelines, as every child is unique with their own personality, learning style and family background. There are, however, some general similarities that can help you recognize the stages of development and offer a nurturing environment where your child may develop to their full potential. As your toddler starts into her third year, you will notice dramatic achievements. Doing things all by herself is important, so be patient and give her time to do things and figure things out even though it may be frustrating to wait. Use every opportunity you can to talk about your day to day experiences with your toddler. This helps her make sense of the world around her and offers the use of language to express emotions, needs, wants and ideas. Emotionally, your toddler continues to develop traits of resiliency, empathy, sympathy, caring, and assertiveness. He is still moving between wanting independence and needing the security of having a caregiver close by. He can still be very attached to a favourite toy or blanket. Your toddler may demand his own way and may show signs of being bossy or throw temper tantrums. He is also getting better at expressing his feelings through words, as his language develops. He needs an ordered, predictable routine for regular activities like bed time, morning routines and nap time. Physically, your toddler is becoming even more active and her large muscles are becoming stronger. She can walk backwards and sideways and walk up and down stairs with both feet on one step before moving on to the next. She can run without falling and jumps in place with both feet off the floor. She can climb on a Page 38

The Newsy Neighbour

riding toy and make it go using both feet. Your toddler’s hands and eyes work well together and her fine motor control is developing to the point where she is able to string beads using her thumb and forefinger. She scribbles, holding a crayon in her whole hand and will imitate drawing vertical and horizontal lines. She can remove jars from lids and will build towers of five or more blocks. Intellectually, your toddler is using self-centered pronouns like I, me, and you. He puts together simple two or three word sentences and is able to answer simple questions such as, “What is your name?” He performs simple tasks like bringing a cup to you when asked. Language is developing quickly and he enjoys talking about the things he sees and the experiences he is having, so encourage this type of conversation. He is beginning to understand the similarities and differences of shapes and sizes and has an increased attention span. He is able to sing parts of songs and enjoys looking at books and talking about the pictures. Your toddler can match shapes, pictures and colours, and has an understanding of the verbal sequence of numbers. Socially, your toddler is establishing her own identity. “No, me do it” is a favourite phrase. She enjoys being near other children, but still may not be able to play cooperatively very well. She may display shyness around strangers or in unfamiliar places and situations. She may show signs of aggression like pulling hair or biting when she becomes frustrated. Comfort, play with, and teach your toddler by providing the appropriate motor and sensory stimulation. Encourage him to show his emotions and talk about them saying things like “It’s OK to cry, can you tell me why you’re sad.” When he is very upset about somethingm move him to a quieter place and give him some time to settle. Praise his efforts and accomplishments, his drawing skills, his running skills, his dressing skills, etc. He is probably good at undressing so give him opportunities to dress himself as well. Talk about things he’s interested in, ask questions about things when grocery shopping, get him to describe what he sees when on walks. When walking, collect rocks, seeds, and leaves and talk about the similarities and differences. Have him help you sort the laundry, picking out all the socks or his shirts. Join him in pretend play, following his lead and letting him develop the play. Give him a container with different small objects and have him sort them into a tray, picking them up with tongs or a spoon, which will help develop his small motor control. Have him help with preparing dinner by doing things like ripping the lettuce for a salad. Make a picture book by using pictures of familiar faces or cutting out different “feeling faces” and then talk about these pictures with your toddler often. Children this age like to imitate so use new words, animal sounds and noises to give him opportunities to expand his language. Quiet activities such as sharing books and sitting together talking about the day are important. Simple movement games using stop/go, down/up, backward/forward, and over/under encourage development of motor skills and listening skills. Remember, your toddler is learning through play so offer many opportunities to do different things and to be with others. Give him lots of praise and love while you’re having fun!

Evolution of a Mom Yes, parenthood changes everything. But parenthood also changes with each baby. Here are some of the ways having a second and third child differs from having your first: Your Clothes 1st baby: You begin wearing maternity clothes as soon as your OB/GYN confirms your pregnancy. 2nd baby: You wear your regular clothes for as long as possible. 3rd baby: Your maternity clothes are your regular clothes. The Baby’s Name 1st baby: You pore over baby-name books and practice pronouncing and writing combinations of all your favourites. 2nd baby: Someone has to name their kid after your great-aunt Mavis, right? It may as well be you. 3rd baby: You open a name book, close your eyes, and see where your finger falls. Bimaldo? Perfect! Preparing for the Birth 1st baby: You practice your breathing religiously. 2nd baby: You don’t bother practicing because you remember that last time, breathing didn’t do a thing. 3rd baby: You ask for an epidural in your 8th month. The Layette 1st baby: You prewash your newborn’s clothes, colourcoordinate them, and fold them neatly in the baby’s little bureau. 2nd baby: You check to make sure that the clothes are clean and discard only the ones with the darkest stains. 3rd baby: Boys can wear pink, can’t they? Worries 1st baby: At the first sign of distress - a whimper, a frown - you pick up the baby. 2nd baby: You pick the baby up when her wails threaten to wake your firstborn. 3rd baby: You teach your 3-year-old how to rewind the mechanical swing. Activities 1st baby: You take your infant to Baby Gymnastics, Baby Swing, and Baby Story Hour. 2nd baby: You take your infant to Baby Gymnastics. 3rd baby: You take your infant to the supermarket and the dry cleaner. Mr. Perkins, the biology instructor at a posh suburban girl’s junior college, said during class, “Miss Smythe, would you please name the organ of the human body, which under the appropriate conditions, expands to six times its normal size, and define the conditions?” Miss Smythe gasped, and then said freezingly, “Mr. Perkins, I don’t think that is a proper question to ask me. I assure you my parents will hear of this.” With that she sat down red-faced. Unperturbed, Mr. Perkins called on Miss Johnson and asked the same question. Miss Johnson, with composure, replied, “The pupil of the eye, in dim light.” “Correct,” said Mr. Perkins. “And now, Miss Smythe, I have three things to say to you. One, you have not studied your lesson. Two, you have a dirty mind. And three, you will some day be faced with a dreadful disappointment.”

Spotlight on the Public Montessori K-3 Program at Wheatland Elementary School Corri Kennedy is already excited about getting back to school this fall. Mrs. Kennedy is the newest addition to Wheatland Elementary K-3 Montessori-trained teaching staff, which includes Mrs. Leanne Pinel and Mrs. Vicky Smith. Teaching since 1998, Mrs. Kennedy’s experience with the Calgary Board of Education spans grades K-3 and includes five years of teaching special education. She also has a strong background in early literacy. In 2007, Mrs. Kennedy and her family moved to Strathmore from Calgary and have enjoyed becoming active in the local community. This fall will mark the eighth school year for Wheatland’s Montessori program. The grade K/1 and 2/3 classrooms are characterized with specially designed, manipulative materials inviting students to engage in learning activities at their own pace. Under the guidance of a trained teacher, children learn by making discoveries with the Montessori materials, cultivating concentration, motivation, self-discipline and a love of learning. A significant benefit of the Montessori philosophy is the way it allows students to learn at an individualized pace, providing enrichment, which can even challenge students to progress beyond regular grade level. It is important to note that, though the way in which the students learn differs from a mainstream classroom, the curriculum set out by Alberta Education is followed. Supporting the Montessori Program at Wheatland Elementary is the parent-run charitable organization, the Strathmore Montessori Society. As an Alternative Program in Golden Hills School Division, the Montessori program receives funding for teacher salaries, but this financial support covers neither the cost of Montessori materials nor specific Montessori teacher training, required in addition to a degree in Education. Green Sleep

Remember when the term ‘going green’ meant something that had once been another colour, but had changed since living in the back of the fridge? Now, like many other words, common use has resulted in another meaning altogether. Even though ‘green’ seems to be the goal of many marketing initiatives, do you ever suspect that this refers more to image and revenue (as in ‘greenback’ – a term that refers to the U.S. dollar bill) than to the environment? In all fairness, there are some businesses/organizations that are more, (at least equally), concerned about the environment than the financial report. It seems a new study comes out daily that says something in our environment is either the new ‘wonder-cure’ or about to kill us. Before you lose sleep over the latest study results, remember: you can almost always find a study that either has a different result and/or agrees with your point of view. We should pay attention when a large number of credible independent studies agree on a set of results. A consistent result in many studies is the importance of sleep. Marketing knows this and has moved into the sleep support world with green initiatives. When looking for quality mattresses to support your sleep, some of the reasonable environmental (green) concepts to look for can be natural-based foams (like soy-based) may reduce concern about outgassing, and renewable resources. In a similar vein, latex-based foams offer excellent body support, are a renewable resource and have become the foam of choice in many mattresses and pillows. The fibres used in mattress covers (ticking), have also become ‘greener’ with bamboo, hemp and other low impact renewable fibre blends becoming popular. Many of the fibres and foams are also mite/bed bug resistant. The quality of a mattress can be a big ‘green’ factor. A mattress that was a great price but only lasts a couple of years may not be such a deal. Not only do you have to spend more to buy a new one, but now have to add to the landfill. Talk to your independent mattress retailer about your sleep support needs. They have to know their product, and since they live in the same environment you do, they just might have a vested interest in keeping it a healthy one! On the studies and results side, don’t forget that one study doesn’t make it a rule or even correct. In any study, take a critical look at who funded and conducted the study and who benefits from the results. How to do this? Easy – check out www. senseaboutscience.org (publications section) and ‘Is That a Fact’ by Mark Battersby (Canadian). You can take a closer look at some interesting ‘studies’ at www.skepticnorth.com and www.badscience.net . www.thenewsyneighbour.com

I AM A... Pumpkin Hola, me llamo Pedro, Pedro Pumpkin – you can call me Peter if you prefer. Most people think of us as vegetables, but we’re actually a fruit, belonging to the Curcurbita species. We’re closely related to several forms of squash – if you want to be sure you’re staring at a pumpkin, take a close look at the stem: ours tend to be more rigid, prickly, and angular than those of our squash cousins. I know you think of us as the Halloween fruit, that big (we’ve been known to weigh as much as 450 kilograms – that’s 1,000 pounds!), round, orange thing with the goofy/scary faces carved into it in late October every year. But did you know there are also dark and pale green, white, red, even gray pumpkins, too? Now you do.

HISTORY

I’m proud to say I’m a native North American – pumpkin-related seeds dating between 7000 and 5500 BC were found in Mexico, and that, mis amigos, is a long time ago! As Europeans colonized the New World, they noticed that some of the continent’s indigenous peoples used us as a staple of their diet, roasting long strips of pumpkin flesh over an open fire, then popping us into their mouths. They even dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats. Impressed, the European newcomers quickly adopted us into their own cuisine, using us regularly in soups and stews. Legend has it that the first variation on pumpkin pie took place when early colonists sliced the top off a pumpkin, removed the seeds, filled it with milk, honey, and spices, then baked it in the ashes of an open fire. As these European explorers and settlers moved around, they took pumpkin seeds with them on their travels, soon spreading us to every continent on the planet, save Antarctica. Our modern name is derived from the Greek word for “large melon,” pepon. The French changed it to the, well, more French-sounding pompon, then the English to the – you guessed it – more English-sounding pumpion. We starred as pumpions in Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor – I’ll bet no one in your family is featured in a play by the Bard! Eventually, back home in good ol’ North America, our name gradually shifted to the pumpkin we know and love today. Of course it’s impossible to separate us from the celebration of Halloween, so I won’t even try. As you know, Halloween pumpkins are often called are often called “jack-o-lanterns,” a name that stems from an Irish myth. Halloween originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack.” Not the nicest guy in the world, Jack was nonetheless clever – so clever, in fact, that he was able to consistently trick the Devil, never an easy task at the best of times! To cut to the chase, when Jack died, God refused him entry into Heaven (like I said, he hadn’t exactly been a model citizen when he was alive). That’s the bad news. The good news was that Jack had managed to make the Devil promise he, Jack, would not be sent to Hell, either. Instead, he did the next best thing, sending ol’ Jack out into the night with only a burning coal to light his way, doomed to roam the earth forever. The Irish referred to this ghostly nighttime figure as “Jack of the Lantern.” You can guess the rest.

HEALTH

We pumpkins are more than the centerpiece of traditional Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations. We’re also nutritious, containing plenty of lutein as well as vitamin Agenerating alpha and beta-carotene. Our sweet and nutty seeds, when roasted, are delicious, and contain protein (16.9% of the daily requirement), zinc, and as much tryptophan as a full glass of milk. They also boast magnesium (a quarter-cup of roasted pumpkin seeds provides 46.1% of your daily magnesium requirement), iron (28.7% of the daily requirement), manganese (52%), copper (24%), and copper (17.1%). Phosphorus and phytosterols are an added bonus, the latter a compound that when present in sufficient amounts can help reduce bad cholesterol, enhance the immune response, and decrease the risk of certain cancers. The healing properties of our seeds have also been recently investigated with respect to arthritis, maintaining prostate health and osteroporosis. So there you have it. Lots of reasons to feel smug the next time you slice into one of us with the intention of doing more than simply carving a silly face! I’ve shared a few nice recipes – I hope you’ll give them a try. Anyhow, gotta roll! Felices fiestas! Pedro Pumpkin

STUFFED PUMPKIN Citrus, spice, tart cranberries and apples with a touch of super-sweet dates, fresh zest from lemon and orange bring tang to the whole dish. Fill the pumpkin and place on baking sheet. Bake uncovered 45 minutes. Place top back on pumpkin and cook another 30 minutes, until bubbling. Allow to cool 15 minutes and serve.

PUMPKIN CHILI Chili can be made in endless ways, but the best chilies are rich, chunky, spicy, and just a tad sweet. Pumpkin makes an amazing creamy chili base. 4 Cups (960 mL) water 1 (15-ounce) can canned crushed tomatoes 1 (15-ounce) kidney beans, drained 1 (15-ounce) can puréed pumpkin 1 Cup (240 mL) chopped onion 1 Cup (240 mL) chopped red bell pepper 1 Cup (240 mL) uncooked bulgur 1 Cup (240 mL) chopped Serrano chili pepper 1 Tbsp (15 mL) chili powder 1 tsp (5 mL) minced garlic 1 tsp (5 mL) cumin 1 tsp (5 mL) salt Place all ingredients in a large saucepan, stir well to combine, and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to medium-low and simmer, covered, 35 minutes. Serve warm.

ORDER FORM ON PAGE 59 Pumpkins are a tremendous source of vitamin A, a normal serving providing almost two-and-a-half times the recommended daily intake of this powerful natural antioxidant – vitamin A is also crucial for maintaining the integrity of skin and mucus membranes, and an important element in ensuring good vision. Research further suggests natural foods rich in vitamin A help protect against lung and oral cavity cancers. Pumpkin is incredibly rich in antioxidants and vitamins. This humble backyard vegetable is very low in calories, yet a good source of vitamin A, and flavonoid poly-phenolic antioxidants like leutin, xanthins, and carotenes. Pumpkin contains just 26 cal per 100 g. Pumpkin contains no saturated fats or cholesterol, but is a rich source of dietary fiber, antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. Many dieticians recommend pumpkin for those who desire to control cholesterol and reduce weigh. Pumpkin is an excellent source of many natural polyphenolic flavonoid compounds such as alpha- and betacarotenes, cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Carotenes

MY Favourite, FABULOUS, FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF By: Kathryn Hartwell

PICKLES For as long as I can remember, I have put pickles and pickle juice in my beer & Garden Cocktail juice to add a tangy zippy flavour to an otherwise old, boring beer; and when I’m done, I eat the dill pickle at the bottom of the glass. It is one of my all-time favourite cocktails! Think about it; they have been putting tomato and clam juice in beer for years, so pickle juice doesn’t sound that strange… does it? Well, as it turns out, “Ah Pickle Juice” is becoming a favourite among sports players. It has been found to help reduce cramps in athletes from bike racers to football players. Pickle juice is being recognized more and more, as a drink that will give you more electrolytes than the more popular “-ade” drinks. It’s no surprise that increasingly around the country, bartenders are hearing the slightly odd question, “May I have a Pickleback?” The Pickleback is a two shot drink, thought to have originated in hipster bars in Brooklyn, but no one knows the exact origins of this drink. What is known is that the Pickleback has become one of the hottest drinks in the country. Simply one shot of Jameson’s Irish whiskey and a second shot of pickle juice. This drink is both surprising and tasty. Pickle juice has long had a reputation for curing hangovers, easing sunburns or reducing blisters – turns out there are a ton of things you can do with the salty, dilly, vinegary juice. Reuse the brine to make more pickles out of different fruits and veggies. Carrots, mushrooms, beets, radishes, green beans (aka dilly beans), the list goes on. Optional: spice it up with hot peppers. Mix pickle juice into potato salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, or macaroni salad to add moisture and a flavour boost.

Sauces and dressings. Replace some of the vinegar in a salad dressing with pickle juice. Or, dress slaw with it; and tartar sauce could always use some. Brine chicken or pork with pickle juice. Drizzle it on grilled fish. Marinate beef with it. Pickle juice tenderizes meat like crazy. But if you’re using pickles that contain yellow dye, mix the juice with 50-50 water, otherwise it yellows the meat. Boil whole potatoes in it. Not only does it season them nicely, but the acid in the juice keeps the ‘tato surfaces relatively intact over a longer simmer, while the insides get creamy. Alternatively, steam vegetables in it. Pickle pops! Freeze the juice in ice cube trays (which can then go into a Bloody Mary) or popsicle molds. Marinate soft white cheese in it. Have you ever had pickle soup (recipe to follow)? Drink it straight, or on the rocks. Sipping a cold PJ after a long run, on a hot day, or when you’re suffering from a hangover is an effective way to replace lost electrolytes and sodium. Or, add it a Bloody Mary! Make a Pickletini (pickle juice plus vodka or gin)! PICKLE SOUP (zupa ogorkowa) 6 cups stock 1 medium carrot, diced very small 1 big potato, diced smallish 1/2 onion minced 6 big sour pickled cucumbers, grated or finely chopped Pickle juice from jar 1 cup sour cream and more to serve A little flour, dill and butter Heat the stock up and add the potato. Leave it to simmer while you sauté the onion slowly in some butter. Add the carrots to the onion for a minute, then the pickles. When the potatoes are almost tender add the carrots, onion and pickles to the pot. Continue to simmer until the potatoes are nice. Mix two teaspoons of flour with the sour cream, and then slowly stir into the soup to thicken it. The sour cream might break up and look a bit mucky, but that’s ok. Taste the soup and add some of the pickle juice to taste - the sour taste should be distinctive but not out of control. Serve with masses of chopped dill, rye toast and more sour cream. Cheers!

Herbs Using Herbs The good thing about growing herbs is that they are always available for cooking. When picking the herbs, pinch out the uppermost growing tips. Pinching the tops helps to keep the plant bushy. You can use the herbs dried or frozen instead of fresh, or when the fresh herbs are out of season. To dry the herbs, gather them carefully before the plants are in full flower. Place the leaves in a warm, dry, airy place out of the sun. The leaves should be turned every day. They will dry in about a week. Another way is to hang sprigs of leaves in a warm, dry place. When they become brittle, store the leaves in tightly sealed jars. Be careful not to crumble them. When freezing the herbs, wash the leaves and then blanch them by placing them in boiling water for one minute. Put the leaves in the freezer as soon as they are cold. You can use frozen herbs by cutting them and putting them straight into the cooking pot, without thawing. Herbs can be used for more than just cooking. Sprigs of dried herbs, especially rosemary, thyme, and marjoram, produce a light fragrance that sweetens the air. Dried lavender flowers can be tied up in sachets and used as a freshener in your linen drawer. Potpourris are made by mixing dried herbs, flower petPage 48

Growing Herbs Herbs like fertile, well-drained soil. They like equal parts of soil, sand, and organic matter. The herbs should be kept just moist. Most herbs can be grown from seeds. Start them in small pots and transplant them into larger pots as they grow. When starting from seeds, moisten the soil and cover with a plastic dome. Place in a sunny window. Thin out the shoots as they grow. It is best to grow each kind of herb in its own pot. This way you can move them around and use whichever one you want without disturbing the others. My green thumb came only as a result of the mistakes I made while learning to see things from the plant’s point of view.

Veggie Heads

By: Kathryn Hartwell

Last month we added the new Veggie Heads column because, after all, vegetarians need yummy recipes too! In tradition of following our August Harvest Issue, the most lovely fall fruit that comes to mind is – tralaa – the pumpkin! There is something magical about them. It is hard to look at a pumpkin and not smile. They are good for both your body and your spirit. What could be more fun to plant, nurture, harvest, eat and enjoy other than a pumpkin? Pumpkins are brimming with Vitamin A and beta-carotene and are perfect for vegan and vegetarian dishes - delicious and nutritious! When buying canned pumpkin, make sure to buy plain pumpkin; not pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin pie filling is sweetened and has spices added. Pumpkin Soup: Perfect power packed nutrition for chilly fall days. In a large, deep skillet, melt two sticks of butter or margarine (olive oil if you are a vegan). Sauté one medium chopped onion, one small stalk of cleaned, pared and sliced celery, five chopped sage leaves (or 1 teaspoon of ground sage) and one half teaspoon cracked pepper. Pour contents of sauté pan in soup pot. Add one 29 oz. can of pumpkin and a carton of chicken broth (vegans and vegetarians, replace chicken broth with vegetable broth). Fill the pumpkin can with milk (vegans, use water) and add that to the pot. Simmer until blended and heated through. Just before serving, add chopped cucumbers and butter croutons. Send a jar to an elderly neighbour, a family with a new baby or a sick friend. Pumpkin Upside-Down Custard: In a large bowl, blend 1 29oz. can of pumpkin, one teaspoon of cinnamon, one half teaspoon of nutmeg and ginger, one quarter teaspoon of cloves, one teaspoon of salt, four large eggs, one cup of packed brown sugar, and one tablespoon of flour. Refill pumpkin can with milk and add to ingredients. Blend until smooth and fold in one cup of peeled, chopped apples (optional). Placed in 9x13 glass baking dish coated with non-stick pan spray. Bake at 400°F, about 40 minutes www.thenewsyneighbour.com

until set. Serve with vanilla ice cream. For topping: blend 1 cup finely chopped pecans with 1 stick melted butter and one quarter cup brown sugar. Mixture will be crumbly. Sprinkle over surface and bake for five to ten minutes to set. Vegans can replace eggs and milk with two packages of silken soft tofu. Pumpkin Cheesecake Custard: Using the same ingredients as above, cut milk down to 10 oz and add two 8 oz packages of softened cream cheese. You will need to use blender or electric mixer to blend. Using two cartons of whipped cream cheese will be easier to blend.

LIFE Lines This monthly column by Jody Brown, is designed

to help you make better connections and live happier lives. Sometimes we just need to ask the question. Joanne (Jody) Brown, BSW is an NLP Master Practitioner and advanced Master Hypnotherapist with a Diploma in corrections and Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. You can learn more about NLP and hypnosis techniques on her website at www. authenticbeing.ca or contact her at 403-983-2230 or authenticbeing@shaw.ca.

For the last two months we have been discussing the importance of identifying your values and responding to the need that you innately have to honour and act upon these value ideals. We started by making a list of 5-10 value characteristics (family, spirituality, health, career, etc.) and then moved into the more specific task of actually figuring out some activities to help you foster these values in your life on a regular and predictable basis. The ultimate goal is to become intentional about recognizing, developing and scheduling these aspects into your life to a greater degree in order to feel more balanced, fulfilled and, ultimately, more empowered and joyful. People, businesses and certainly television programming depict values that contradict and challenge us on a daily, if not minute-by-minute basis. Most often we are able to accept the differing values of others and carry on without being intolerant and dismissive, but it’s important to be able to recognize and critically think about what is going on underneath the surface so that we can identify what exactly is making us feel uncomfortable. This allows us to be able to respond calmly and thoughtfully instead of being reactive and defensive. In the same way that we can be comfortable with and attracted to people who have similar values to us, we can also be repelled by those with values that are so different from our beliefs that we have difficulty interacting. This might lead to avoidance of certain individuals or it might lead you to quit a job if you don’t feel that your values are being respected or appropriately represented by the company. For instance, if a company claims to stand behind its motto to support and advocate for individuals, yet you don’t see that evident in their daily operation, this might leave you feeling uncomfortable, misaligned and even confused about your role in the company. If you aren’t able to align your beliefs with the company’s practices, you Page 50

The Newsy Neighbour

might find it necessary to leave and look for a better employment fit elsewhere. Ultimately, it’s most important to recognize and understand our own values. Having this knowledge and being comfortable with our own sense of who we are and what our values are will allow us to be open to others’ beliefs and honest when values differ. When we meet others and certainly prior to marriage - or even looking for a roommate or babysitter, for that matter - it’s important to gain a sense of what their values are. One way is to listen to what they express is important to them, however, you can also ask lots of questions about how they would respond under certain circumstances and what they feel are values that they would like to see in other people. ‘Scruples’ is a great game you can play to gain some insight into what motivates people and what is important to them. It can lead to some great debates too! As we mature and as our life situations change, our values and beliefs shift as well. Take time to update your beliefs and respond to your needs by identifying your most important values. This will help you to gain knowledge and understanding about the most important person you need to align with absolutely - yourself! Good luck and have fun with it. Lifelines “When you know who you truly are, there is an abiding alive sense of peace. You could call it joy because that’s what joy is: vibrantly alive peace. Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. Thanks to all those who’ve supported the Newsy Neighbour and read my reviews over the last little while—and here’s to another year filled with promise! Yours in Truth, Derek Donais

Island in the Clouds Susan M. Toy Island Cat Editions ISBN: 9780987938527

This month’s book is a perfect fit for the lazy days of summer. Island in the Clouds, by Susan M Toy, is a story set in an idyllic island getaway in a quiet little corner of the Caribbean. The problem is that paradise is not always what it’s cracked up to be. Geoff, also known as Bob, was a Calgary businessman who came out on the wrong end of some questionable dealings orchestrated by his partners. These so-called friends left Bob to take the fall when their plans went south. So did Bob—all the way south to Bequia, the Island in the Clouds. Bob, after changing his name to Geoff, has made a life for himself looking after the properties of ex-patriot landowners on the island, tending to their residences while they are away. For some, this means most of the time. Though he became the scapegoat in their business transgressions, Bob was provided accommodation in the guest house of the CEO’s Bequia property. He’s also been promised monetary compensation, but has pretty much given up on trying to collect after years of being brushed off. It is during the course of Geoff’s duties at a particular island retreat known as The Clouds that his life of safe isolation takes a dangerous turn. He finds a dead woman floating in the pool one morning. This discovery sets off a series of events that reveal to the reader the shadier and sometimes treacherous underside of Bequia. Complicating matters is the fact that Geoff and other ex-patriot inhabitants reside in a society where things don’t run according to the schedules and rules that westerners are accustomed to. The local police are more concerned with having a job than doing one, so Geoff is forced to begin investigating matters for himself. He begins a quest to find the murderer—and clear his own name in the process, as the less-than-motivated authorities would find it much more convenient to charge Geoff than to dirty their hands with actual police work. A bit of travel guide mixed with a good dose of murder mystery, Susan M. Toy has penned a highly entertaining and engaging read. Written from Geoff’s point of view as narrator, the tale spins at a good pace and in a style reminiscent of classic, private detective crime novels. Filled with colourful characters and unfolding in a dramatically beautiful setting, it’s a book you should enjoy while swaying in your hammock as the summer sun tracks by overhead.

“Oh, and a warning, my friend—be prepared to become the prime suspect. You were the first to find her, so you’re the easiest person to charge. That would allow for a quick close to this case, making the police look good.”—Dr. David Halliday Page 54

House cleaning tips: Clean a Mirror - You don’t have to buy glass cleaners and paper towels to clean your mirrors. Just some vinegar and an old newspaper is all you need to keep your mirrors shining as new. Your house will look cleaner if the mirrors are clean.

Cleaning the Microwave - Cleaning a microwave is easy. Fill up a cup of water and put it in there on high for a few minutes. The steam from the cup will loosen any stuck-on food, and then you can just wipe it away. It’s that simple. Cleaning the Fridge - A fridge looks big and cleaning it looks even bigger. Follow my steps and the work will be a bit easier. First toss out any bad food. Then start with wiping down the top shelves and work down. Baking soda and water make a great cleaner and won’t leave your fridge smelling like harsh cleanser. After you wipe out the crispers, line them with paper towels for easier cleaning next time.

THE MOVE...and SCHOOL I suspect that most of us can remember changing schools at one time or other. My experience came when my parents announced we were moving; a new town, new house, new friends and new school... yikes! That was scary! I survived it, and I didn’t have anything too traumatic happen; but it was a memory. There is a lot to think about when selling your current home and buying another one, including changing schools. As parents, when it came time to move our family to Strathmore, we planned a bit ahead and tried to make the transition a little less stressful. It was summer and school was out, so we decided to allow the kids to go play at the school playground where they would be attending in the fall. It only took a couple of afternoons, but sure enough, they met some kids! So come the first day of school, they already had friends. It really worked! Here are some tips and ideas to keep in mind when getting ready to buy you new home and change schools: • Research schools in the area you’re moving to. • Talk to the principal and teacher of the school your child is leaving. • Request or take a collection of your child’s work to bring to the new school. • Talk to the principal of the new school. • Ask about strategies the new school has for helping new children adjust to the school – a buddy system, for example. • If your child has special needs, talk to the new school about its facilities. If you’re moving interstate, your child’s abilities and eligibility for assistance might need to be re-assessed. • Make a scrapbook of people, activities and memories from your child’s old school. • Make a contact list of friends from your child’s old school and neighbourhood. • Plan a farewell party. • Buy the new books, if needed. • Walk around the grounds and buildings of the new school with your child. This will help your child get to know where the important things are located. • Talk to your new neighbours. Perhaps your child can meet some classmates for a play date before the first day at school. Hope you’ve had a great summer! And if you’re new to the area... WELCOME! Hayley Poirier Page 64
