Imagine that you had won the following *PRIZE* in a contest: Each morning your bank would deposit $86,400 in your private account for your use. However, this prize has rules: The set of rules:

BANK ACCOUNT

1. Everything that you didn’t spend during each day would be taken away from you. 2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account. 3. You may only spend it. 4. Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400 for that day. 5. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, “Game Over!”. It can close the account and you will not receive a new one.

Brulotte Bookkeeping & Tax Services

What would you personally do?

pbrulotte@telus.net

You would buy anything and everything you wanted right? Not only for yourself, but for all the people you love and care for. Even for people you don’t know, because you couldn’t possibly spend it all on yourself, right?

brulottebookkeeping.com

With 29 years of experience, we look forward to working with you for your accounting needs.

You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, because you knew it would be replenished in the morning, right?

What we haven’t used up that day is forever lost. 4. Yesterday is forever gone. 5. Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time WITHOUT WARNING.

FARM SUCCESSION

SO, what will YOU do with your 86,400 seconds?

Farm succession is a process not a single event. With planning you will save taxes and provide all of your children with an equal share value of the farm, thus creating a legacy of harmony and goodwill for your family.

What makes our Publication different? You will most definitely be able to answer that question after reading this amazing August Issue. My husband thought I was losing it when he heard me laughing while I was editing yesterday. You know how some things just strike you funny, and then every time you think about it you just can’t control yourself? If you can read through this Issue and not have a giggle like that, I will be shocked. That is only ONE of the things that makes The Newsy Neighbour different. Make sure you take the time to read pages 14-15. Especially if you are an advertiser, thinking about spending your hard earned dollars with us!

Marcy is back this month, and we could not be happier! Her column will shake things up a bit. Did you know that our wonderful province has an “Alberta Open Farm Days” how FUN! You can visit these incredible farms, learn new things, and even eat yummy food – what a wonderful way to spend the day with your kids! I could write a whole magazine on this August Issue but I don’t want to ruin it for you. Just make sure you have tons of time to sit, relax and enjoy. Kathryn, Aleesha and Denise

Cover Feature

What makes our publication

The Newsy Neighbour Magazine is an altogether different magazine! Founded in September 2008, our aim is to offer an attractive, unique, interesting and humorous magazine that promotes and supports the businesses and community groups that define the cities, towns and villages east of Calgary, focusing mainly on Strathmore, Langdon and Chestermere. We try to persuade you with the quality of the ads and reading content, and by showing our presence in these towns. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine is, and always has been, LOCAL and independent.

We are running an unorthodox magazine that managed to win Small Business of the Year in 2013. We did this by making customer service a TOP priority, and secondly by SUPPORTING the businesses, non-profit groups and readers of this magazine by shopping LOCAL, sponsoring, volunteering and donating in any way we could in these communities.

Many of the topics we covered are being presented in a way that keeps the interest of the readers at a high level. We have many high profile columnists such as Jock Wilson, who has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for over 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on News Talk 770 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. Jock has a huge fan base and following. We have many more incredible columnists and contributors; to learn about each and every one of them, please visit our website www. thenewsyneighbour.com.

Our promise to our readers:

The Newsy Neighbour magazine is full of unique, interesting and humorous reading. We will continue to deliver the best of the best we can get our hands on, and to keep you engaged and loving our magazine. “The Newsy Neighbour is the only magazine that both my husband and I read cover to cover!” ~ Tina (Strathmore, AB)

The magazine helps people to connect in a unique and effective way. Not only do we print 70+ pages in full colour with a beautiful gloss finish and deliver it to the homes and businesses in Strathmore, Chestermere, Langdon, Carseland, Delacour, Shepard, Lyalta, Dalemead, Standard, Conrich, Rockyford, Cheadle, Nightingale, Namaka & Speargrass, but we also publish every issue of the magazine on the world’s fastest growing digital publishing platform that has over 70 million readers each month: issuu.com. Most recent stats on issuu.com

are: 7,560 online reads since May 30th and 152,895

reads since we started publishing on issuu.com almost 4 years ago. We have over 8,500 followers on our Twitter account, over 1,200 likes on our Facebook page, 261 direct email subscribers and we have paid subscribers from all over Canada and the United States. Since we launched our new website over 5 years ago, we have had over 500,000 hits to it just from search engines alone, and people from all over the world read our magazine. See the map below. To see all these statistics yourself, please visit our website at: www.thenewsyneighbour. com and click on the statistics page.

Our estimated readership is over 46,000 each ISSUE.

Our promise to our advertisers: The Newsy Neighbour does whatever we can to make your advertising experience pleasurable. We create ads free of charge, we make as many changes as you want until you are completely happy with your ad, and if you are unhappy with the look for your ad for whatever reason, we will go above and beyond the call of duty to make you happy. We take pride in our customer service, and it sets us apart. We have so many clients that have been advertising in every single issue for 5+ years because of the incredible response they get. If you are NOT getting a response, you need to

spend some one on one time with us and re-vamp your advertising campaign. We strive to make sure all our advertisers get results!

Not only that, but compare us to the other local publications!

Our prices are lower for most of our ad sizes and our distribution is more than any of the local publications. We highly recommend you comparing us!

“I just want to take this moment to thank you and the Newsy Neighbour. I have been advertising with you for quite awhile now and I just want to say that your publication has improved my client base tremendously. I am getting clients from all over and it is great. Again a BIG thank you.” ~ Patricia Brulotte, Brulotte Bookkeeping & Tax Services We print this magazine twelve times a year and distribute free of charge, unless you are out of our mailing range. THANK YOU AGAIN!!! We attended Strathmore Town Council recently, to give everyone an update on The ‪Get To Know Your Neighbour Festival on June 20th. It was a huge success, and the feedback we got from Council members (namely Sobol and Peterson) were not only encouraging, but extremely gratifying. It seems it’s unanimous that our festival was a huge success and we can’t WAIT to do this again next year!! Keep an eye

open for the big announcement on the date for the 2016!! ‪

You can find out more info on the results of the Festival on pages 4849 in the July Issue 93! www.thenewsyneighbour.com The sole purpose of the festival was to “introduce” customers to businesses in downtown Strathmore. The Newsy Neighbour made no profits on this festival, but a lot of money was raised! • $760 from renting out tables to local businesses all along the downtown area, donated to the Strathmore Library. • 95 lbs and $20 for Wheatland Food Bank • $1,150 from BDS Properties’ BBQ for Step One Housing • $335 from King Eddy Pub’s beef on a bun for the Women’s Emergency Shelter • $934.25 from Strathmore Pawn and the poker run for Miranda Lambert tickets for Kids Cancer Foundation of Alberta • $254 from Value Drug Mart’s bucket toss for the Loftus Hope Fund Grant total: $2933.25

When Sending The Kids Back to School…don’t Forget to Pack Their Health!

Although it seems difficult to accept, the summer holiday has come and gone, and the reality of the school year begins again! For many of us, we have already taken our kids to get all of the regular supplies they will need to have a fun and productive school year. Although we have taken all the steps to ensure they are fully prepared to learn, we often forget that another important component to ensure they have a rewarding and productive year, is to provide their mind and bodies with all the nutrients they will need as well!

*Multi-Vitamin and Minerals. For kids and adults alike, a good quality multi-vitamin and mineral complex is one of the essential building blocks of our overall health. Even for children who make the healthiest of choices in their diet, a good multi-vitamin and mineral on a daily basis will help to ensure that our bodies have at least the minimum needed to function, since many of our foods lack the nutrients they did years ago. *Omega 3-6-9 or EFA’s (Essential Fatty Acids). Over the past decade or so, this group of nutrients may be the most scientifically researched, and some results from these clinical studies have been truly remarkable! EFA’s, or the “healthy fats” sourced from fish or plants such as Chia, Hemp, or Flax have been shown to help provide energy, boost our immune system, aid in tissue repair, and help support brain function overall including memory, motor function, and mood. *Probiotics. These are the “healthy bacteria” that are found in our intestinal tract. Many of today’s leading nutritional experts agree that the majority of all illness, begins in the gut. When taken on a daily basis, probiotics will support healthy digestion, support all the organs of elimination to

Today’s modern school life is quite different than it was years ago. Today’s classes offered through our education system are more demanding than ever before, even at the youngest of ages. While at school, many of our children will be exposed to illnesses and various strings of bacteria that are not normally found at home. And, for many parents who have demanding lifestyles, the time needed to ensure our children have a healthy and nutrient-filled lunch has been replaced by processed, quick, convenient, and expensive, foods that have very little nutritional value. Combined, these challenges may result that our children will not be able to learn as effectively as we would like, or they may get sick more often. Following is a list of natural supplements that you may wish to include on your child’s back to school list:

assist in the removable of toxins, and overall build a stronger immune system. *Herbal immunity formula. When considering supplementation this school year, it may be a good idea to consider a natural immunity formula. Many of the top selling formulas from the most trusted of manufacturers may contain natural ingredients such as Elderberry, Blueberry, and Reishi or Shitake mushrooms. These components have all been shown to help support a healthy immune system, and give our bodies the best chance to defend against illness and infection. Traditionally these supplements were found in capsule form, but now many of the most trusted brands have brought out liquid forms that are easily absorbable, and convenient for family members of all ages to take! As well, keep in mind these simple lifestyle tips that will help to ensure your child gets the most out of their school year: *Drink 8 glasses of water each day to keep the body hydrated. All of our internal organs, including the brain, need water to function properly. *When selecting foods, try and make choices for your children that are high in fibre and protein, and low in fat and carbohydrates. The greater the contrast, the healthier the food choice is!

The Importance of Doing Homework Mr. Perkins, the biology instructor at a posh suburban girl’s junior college, said during class, “Miss Smythe, would you please name the organ of the human body which, under the appropriate conditions, expands to six times its normal size and define the conditions?” Miss Smythe gasped, and then said freezingly, “Mr. Perkins, I don’t think that is a proper question to ask me. I assure you my parents will hear of this.” With that she sat down red-faced. Unperturbed, Mr. Perkins called on Miss Johnson and asked the same question. Miss Johnson, with composure, replied, “The pupil of the eye, in dim light.” “Correct,” said Mr. Perkins. “And now, Miss Smythe, I have three things to say to you. One, you have not studied your lesson. Two, you have a dirty mind. And three, you will someday be faced with a dreadful disappointment.”

what Plan B was. I was in a panic. How could I not have a plan B? I’m good at plans! I planned to be a vet my whole life. How could I be 19 and not know? Well, here’s the reality - I’m wayyyyy past 19 now and I’m still not sure what I want to be when I grow up. My son, who is going into 5th grade, was recently asked what he wants to be when he grows up. The answer hasn’t changed since he was three. He wants to be a veterinarian. Yep, that nut didn’t fall far from the momma tree. And here I am, remembering how lost and overwhelmed I felt when my plan A failed. I asked my son what he wanted to be if he couldn’t be a vet. “Mom,” he said, “I’m going to be a vet.” So what do I, a career coach, say to my son? “Well if you work hard enough, and study hard enough, you can do it.” Sigh! I think parents in Japan might have the right idea. In the Japanese culture, it is most often the parents, not the 17 year old high-school graduate, that pick what post-secondary institute the child will go to and they choose their child’s career path. Why leave such an all-important decision to someone that just started shaving a few years ago and still can’t work the laundry machine? I don’t think my boys, who I am trying to raise to be strong, independent, laundry washing men, would buy into that. So what can I and other parents do to help their kids come up with a plan A, plan B and even maybe plan G? Well, encourage their dreams, but help them think outside the small box they have drawn for themselves. Have them explore alternative options. In high school, they should do some activates that will help direct them along the way but it usually isn’t enough. At home, explore sites such as www.alis.ab.ca (Alberta Learning Information Services) or www.careercruising.com together. Even taking personality test such as Myers-Briggs or Humanmetrics will provide insight and create an opportunity to start talking about possible career options. Research things such as average income, working conditions, and the job market for each possible career. Consider things like length of time in school/training and the cost together. (Just think if I did get into vet school, I’d still be paying off student loans.) For individuals still in school, speak with a guidance counselor. They are a great source of information. For those of us out of school but still not sure what we want to be when we grow up, consider booking an appointment with a career coach. In Strathmore and area, McBride Career Group provides these services at no cost to any resident of Alberta; it doesn’t matter if you are in school, out of school or too cool for school.

As for me I just recently went through the entire process of temperament and personality testing and consistently came out with 4 careers to consider; plans A through D, if you will. Plan A a corporate trainer; plan B - a communications professional; plan C a writer and Plan D – a funeral director. 3 out of 4 were dead on, the last one… well, maybe it would be dead-on too (in more ways than one). If I ever grow up, maybe I will give the funeral director career some thought.

Can you believe it? The summer is halfway over. What?? Where did it go?? And what does this mean?

I’ve heard the stories; people getting into fights, tugging back and forth on the last Elmo or Furby or stupid video game, people getting trampled and things broken and lives threatened. I’m also aware that these crazy things don’t happen everywhere, and some of the stories are nothing but Urban Legend – but honestly, I’m content just avoiding that day and vegging on the couch on leftovers while crazies run amok in public. Even if it sliiiiiightly pains me that I’m missing out on a good sale – Black Friday terrifies me, and it just isn’t worth it. Believe it or not, there is actually a day worse than Black Friday. A time, a season more terrifying and shockingly full of rage than those rushed days after Thanksgiving/Boxing Day, but before Christmas – which is sad, because it is a time to shop, and shopping should ALWAYS be fun. A time where you will learn the truth of who people really are by how they act, and that time is called “Back to School Shopping”. Dun dun DUNNNNNN! Why didn’t anyone warn me?? Is this some kind of schoolaged kid initiation? My first year was easy. Kindergarten. Crayons and construction paper aren’t exactly hard to come by and don’t warrant the foaming at the mouth I bore witness to during this terrible time last year. I’m not sure if this is everywhere – but one weekend out of every year before the school year begins is what they call “Tax Free Weekend” – the weekend that any school supplies (including clothes under a certain amount) you can buy tax free. JOY! SALES! NO TAX! BUY ALL THE PAPER!!! It seemed like a pretty sweet deal to me. One we didn’t capitalize on the first year – and being the sale queen I consider myself, I was going to own it like I own the clearance racks! Oh, silly naive me. Little did I know the horror I was to behold. We’d been out of town on the first tax-free weekend day (Saturday, duh) so naturally I expected a lot of the racks to be messy and certain things to be sold out or only have some hideous snot colour left as a choice. I did not expect there to be so many people that you couldn’t even push a cart into that area. I didn’t

It means that soon, our kids will be going back to school. I should be rejoicing, but instead, I am dreading. And not because the kids will be away from me. Allow me to explain. Begrudgingly, right now I am going to perpetuate the “typical woman” stereotype and say: I love to shop. I LOVE IT! Even more than shopping, I love a good sale. I’m no crazy couponer, but I hate having to pay full price on ANYTHING, and I can own the crap out of a clearance rack. I even have an entire basket full of free samples I am constantly scoring; I will never have to worry about dirty hair or dry skin ever again and I haven’t had to buy razors in over a year. YES- I shave! I know where your mind went. Tsk. I shave with FREE razors. I love that word. FREE. It just feels right. When there are a bunch of sales going on at the same time, you’d think I’d be like a kid in a candy store when the parents aren’t watching, stuffing their little face full of as much sugar and chocolate as their chipmunk cheeks can hold. You might think that if I love sales and free and buy one get one that much, that my favourite day of the year would be Black Friday – but you’d be wrong. My love for stuff does not overpower my hatred of people. And crowds. And crowds of people. I don’t consider myself claustrophobic, but when a mass of people start closing in on me, the only reaction my body tells me to have is to start throwing elbows. I’m at a sale because I’m cheap and don’t have much money – no way could I afford bail – so I’d rather just avoid it. I’ve seen the photos; those butt-crazy mile-long lines to get into Wal-Mart, Best Buy, or wherever else proclaiming huge price slashes. I’m sorry, but I’m not waiting out in the elements to get a TV for a hundred bucks off when I don’t really need a new TV, or some stupid toy my kid is going to play with for a week and then forget about it.

CONGRATULATIONS STRATHMORE FROM BELTONE HEARING CENTRES A PROUD VENDOR OF THE ALBERTA 55 PLUS SUMMER GAMES It was very exciting to see Strathmore participate with such enthusiasm. Congratulations to all the volunteers, vendors, attendees & athletes. Strathmore is strong & vibrant.

WELL DONE EVERYONE!!

expect to see so many angry, frustrated, and panic stricken faces. This is BTS, people! BACK TO SCHOOL! FREE FROM THE CHILDREN! PEACE AND QUIET! This should be a joyous occasion! There were things flying… or maybe being thrown in anger because it isn’t the right colour or size or have enough in the pack. The organizer that was supposed to have each schools shopping list for each grade in the area was a mess of disorganization, and as far as I could tell, didn’t have any of the school lists left that were within a 20 mile radius. There was fighting and bickering and whining and complaining – and not from the kids. The kids were too entranced by the brightly coloured memo books and nifty erasers while their moms were screeching about how nothing was left. I was very wary about dipping my toe into the deep end; the two aisles that contained the bulk of the most-needed school supplies. Wide and college ruled paper, markers, scissors, pencil cases, the works. I tiptoed toward what I found at the top of Holden’s school list (the one we had to look up online because it did not exist in that store): Ticonderoga pencils. Why so specific? I don’t know. There are a billion different kinds of pencils. Different colours, sizes, varieties – but this list gave no specifics. Why??? Why do bad things happen to good people?? That meant I was going to have to search. To forage for scraps with the mouth-foamers and seethers. At that exact moment, something took hold of my kids. Something evil and I’m sure otherworldly. They both started losing their minds over absolutely nothing, which shot my stress level of entering into the school supply underworld even more nerve-wracking. I was desperate to get in and out in one piece, but also desperate for my kids to shut up so I could concentrate and up my chances of getting in and out in one piece. This is what Back to School shopping does to you. It messes with your brain. It’s a conspiracy. That was when I heard it… the familiar sound of mouth-breathing panic caused by chaos, kids, and the sweet smell of sale in the afternoon. She was hovering over my shoulder, muttering “pencils…. pencils….pencils…” and I snapped out of the trance that was holding me hostage. I didn’t even realize I was holding a pack of pencils in my hand. I’d been staring at it for so long trying to decide if it was the right one since SOMEONE didn’t specify that I got lost in my own mind. I was her. She was me. This crap was making us both crazy. At that point, I did the only thing I could think left to do – I gave her my pack of pencils, grabbed another (because they were literally right in front of us) and told Thomas we could just get the rest of this crap once the madness died down. The decision really came down to what a lot of decisions in parenthood do: Is it really worth waiting in an hour long checkout line while the kids cry and possibly FINALLY push me over the

Dog Days of Summer, Here We Come!! I always have mixed feelings about August.

Carol Warawa, C.C.S, SRES

On one hand, it’s still summer and what could be better than that?! But on the other hand, you can see the wind down of summer slowly starting – the days are starting to get shorter, by the end of August the mornings aren’t as warm as July, some leaves are starting to turn colour, and we’re inundated with Staples “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” ads. There’s just a feeling of “fallness” in the air. So usually I prefer July, with its hotness, longer days and Stampede silliness over the touch of melancholy that August brings.

9:26 – “we got some rain this morning. I’m going to try to move your car out front because the parking lot is flooding.” Okay, that sounds like more than “some rain” but since our parking lot is a bit prone to overflowing at the best of times, no big deal… right?

July 12 found me in Coeur d’Alene, where some unexpected mechanical issues had laid one bike low on Friday and caused an unexpected delay in the final leg home, so it was going to be a fairly long stretch of riding that day. I happened to look at Facebook on my phone before leaving the hotel and noted that various friends in Langdon were posting pictures of what appeared to be a whopper of a storm. Other than thinking it was odd to have a big storm so early in the day, I didn’t give it much thought beyond hoping it was done before I got there on the bike. I didn’t check my phone again until Kalispell, so sometime shortly after noon, where I found at least 6 text notifications from my son from a couple of hours earlier. That in itself was odd as he’s not known for being a prolific texter, or much else for that matter, early in the morning. With a small amount of dread, I popped open my phone, expecting to hear of a lack of food in the house or, god forbid, an accident of some type.

own, I think we did good. Again. ‘Cause apparently that’s the way we roll out here. And I’m sorry July, but August is now my favourite. Don’t let me down, August, we’ve had enough “weather” for a while.

That’s starting to sound like a bit of an understatement…

Chestermere Floods

10:01 – “there’s a small amount of water seeping in the basement along the back wall closest to the parking lot. I’ve started moving everything away from it but the mattress and some boxes got a little wet” WHAT???!!!! Bearing in mind it is now 12:45 and I’m about 6 hours from home… WHAT???!!! 10:02 – “you can kind of see in the picture the puddles forming” WHAT???!!!! What pictures??!!! Oh… turn cell data back on, right. Damn, I’m over on my US data plan. Pictures can wait.

West Creek Pond After

11:32 – “The basement looks to be drying up but the water in the back is getting higher so it looks like it’s starting to come over the sidewalk. I have tickets to the rodeo so I have to leave soon. Call or text when you can” Okay, what, wait!!! You’re leaving?? And the water outside is still rising??!!! Dammit, that was almost an hour and half ago… son of a … ACK!!! In the end, the “small amount of water seeping in” was about all the flood amounted to in my house, so other than the loss of some books and a mattress that was destined for the dump anyhow, we got off lightly. Very, very lightly as it turns out. Over the next week, I helped a couple of random people remove carpet or get some clean laundry happening and listened to their stories. It seems the damage came from either sump pumps that were off because the power was out, sewage backup (you have my deepest sympathies if that was you), window wells that turned into mini swimming pools or seepage like my house had. Some of you had coverage and insurance companies that rock, some of you less so, unfortunately. I think we all learned that we need to do reviews of our policies in light of this disaster. The next week brought us mass hail on Tuesday, resulting in white caps on the bike park in Chestermere, and a day long downpour on Friday. By the weekend it was sunny and, after a herculean effort by some dedicated volunteers, the annual Langdon Days ball tournament was good to go albeit on a slightly modified schedule due to the loss of Friday’s games. It seemed we were out of the woods… until a tornado came to visit on the 22nd. Fortunately it caused minimal damage, but still… ENOUGH!!! Last month I wrote about community and compared living in places like Strathmore, Langdon and Chestermere to living in the “big” city. While I know the city (Calgary, not Chesty… sorry Chesty, you’ll always be the “Town of Chestermere” to me) pulled together in ways rarely seen. After the 2013 floods, I think Langdon and Chestermere can hold their heads high when it comes to disaster support. From the CUI employees in Chestermere that worked endless hours draining flooded areas or full ponds to make way for more water, to the grassroots support as neighbours helped each other get rid of waterlogged possessions in the town-provided bins, or volunteered to help make meals and do laundry for those dealing with situations far worse than their

Seeking Leadership, Eh! Where Are You?

With an election looming this fall, questions abound regarding Canada’s political leadership. side from party loyalists, political pundits are recommending constituents consider voting for the least worst candidate. This is similar to the choices facing Iranians, when Hassan Rohani was elected President in 2013. Interesting to note: Iran now has a nuclear deal with the United States that is eliciting varied emotional responses globally. Meanwhile, back in Canada, becoming Prime Minister is part and parcel of leading a political party that wins a federal election; therefore, if anyone is truly interested in selecting the country’s leader, a party membership is required. Disenchantment with politics and politicians leads to the majority of Canadians not choosing that path. The failure of elected representatives to pay heed to Canadians’ concerns (i.e. Bill C-51, missing Aboriginal women to name a couple) accompanied by corruption playing out before the Courts regarding the misuse of public funds is creating a chilly atmosphere for those currently in power. A recent EKOS poll reports that Prime Minister Harper has an approval rating of 32% versus a 62% disapproval rating. NDP’s Thomas Mulcair ratings are almost exactly the reverse, 60-30, while the Liberals’ Justin Trudeau rates roughly equal levels of approval and disapproval. People want authentic leaders, not crafted ones. Why is this important? Michael Hyatt, chairman of Thomas Nelson Publishers and a leadership expert states, “Without leaders, things drift along. They go where they want to go, following the path of least resistance… The leader’s job is to overcome resistance and make things flow in a different direction. His or her job is to create a different reality.” A shift is occurring in these challenging times, changing what we know and how we know it. Many view Canada with great favour; however, with individuals in power that fail to connect with the populace and the world, that can disappear in a moment.

A leader provides vision and direction. Great ones possess integrity, garner trust, and communicate both by listening and speaking. They know and demonstrate service to others in word and deed. The race is on and at this point the focus is on leadership. Where are the ads to engage the electorate - ads that provide a vision for a strong Canadian future and how that will be accomplished? Instead of listening to what Canadians are saying, party policy is trumping innovative responsiveness. Television and radio are infested with attack ads, further breeding disgust and disenchantment. As awareness grows, tolerance for this type of bullying behaviour and constant criticism evaporates. Disengagement leads to lost details impacting the bottom line both individually and collectively. Instead of isolated, cold elitism, a growing number of Canadians desire vision, a solution-oriented mindset and a collaborative attitude to demonstrate Canadian spirit. This kind of leadership aligned with healthy values is sure to advance us globally. Instead of choosing from the best for the best, it appears that the choice may be the least worst candidate. How sad.

What screws us up the most in life is the picture in our head of how life is suppose to be. A Short Quiz 1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator? The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way. 2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator? Wrong Answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant and close the refrigerator. Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your actions. 3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference, all the animals attend except one. Which animal doesn’t attend? Correct Answer: The elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. This tests your memory. OK, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your abilities. 4. There is a river you must cross. But it is inhabited by crocodiles. How do you manage it? Correct Answer: You swim across. All the crocodiles are attending the Animal Meeting! This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

Vehicles

Matching a vehicle with a trailer can be simple, but you have to take a number of factors into account. Safe trailering requires a properly equipped vehicle, so it is important to ensure that the vehicle you want is built to handle your specific trailering needs. There are regional legal requirements pertaining to proper vehicle and trailer loading guidelines and safety - be sure to verify regional road rules.

Caution: If you don’t use the correct equipment and/or drive properly, you can lose control of your vehicle. You could also jack-knife your truck and trailer, or overload your vehicle brakes. All of this puts you and your passengers at risk of serious injury. Attaching a trailer to your vehicle will also change the handling, fuel efficiency and performance. You’ve already calculated the Payload Weight you need to carry, and you’ve chosen the body type, drive type and series of pickup you want. Now there are two more things you need to decide: Can the vehicle handle the trailer load? Can the rear axle handle the trailer load? Just because a vehicles GVWR can handle the trailering load, keep in mind one very important thing: GVWR assumes your truck is sharing the load between two axles. When you’re trailering, weight is almost never distributed equally between both axles. Usually, the rear axle takes the majority of the load. It’s important not to exceed your rear axle’s capacity. This is why you need to calculate how much weight will be on the back axle (Rear Gross Axle Weight). To calculate the Rear Gross Axle Weight, you must add the cargo with half of the people load (the half being carried by the rear axle), the Rear Curb Weight of the truck and the Tongue Weight. Also, because of a “teeter-totter” effect when you tow a trailer, approximately 40% of the tongue load

30 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

will come off of the front axle and be carried on the rear axle. This is called the Weight Distribution Factor. Rear Gross Axle Weight = Cargo (to be carried in the tow vehicle) + People Load (approximately 50% of total passenger weight) + Rear Curb Weight (of the tow vehicle)* + Tongue Weight (approximately 10% of the trailer’s GVWR) + Weight Distribution Factor*

Take Note: Your sales consultant will need to confirm the Rear Gross Axle Weight, and Weight Distribution Factor to verify that the chosen truck’s Rear Gross Axle Weight Rating (RGAWR) won’t be exceeded. Caution: It’s important to make these calculations to avoid an overload situation. Overloading may cause premature brake failure, which can jeopardize the safety of both you and your passengers. Make A Wish

Two guys were on lake, fishing and using worms as bait. One of the guys gets a nibble and reels in his line. He caught a bottle. He uncorks the bottle and out comes a genie. The genie grants him one wish. Finaly, he says, “I wish this whole lake were beer!” Poof!!! The lake turns to beer. The other guy looks at him and says, “You idiot! Now we have to pee in the boat!”

Choose The Right Tire There are a lot of things on your car that need to be regularly checked and replaced, but none may be more important than your tires. As your anchor to the road, your tires need to be in top condition for whatever driving situation you find yourself in. Before you walk into a tire store, here are a few things you need to keep in mind. When purchasing tires, it is important to make sure that all the tires on your car are the same. This is most easily done when buying all four tires at once. But let’s say you need to change just one or two tires because they were damaged. You just have to make sure that you buy the same brand, size, type, and speed rating. The next thing you need to know when buying tires is what kind of conditions you will be driving your car in. In Alberta, there is a lot of snow in the winter and rain throughout the spring and summer. Because of this, you are going to need to have the best tire for the worst driving conditions you will face. This might mean buying two sets of tires; one for the summer and one for the winter. This way, you will always have the right tire for your situation. In some cases, you may be able to get away with all-season tires. But you have to consider your normal driving habits as well. If your furthest driving distance is to the local shopping centre, you can choose just about any tire. If you spend a lot of time in rush hour traffic, you’ll be better off getting more responsive tires. For regular long highway trips, you’ll need some smooth, quiet, long lasting tires. And it comes to no surprise that you’ll want tires with great handling if you frequently find yourself on a winding mountain road. One of the last things you need to think about is your tire’s speed rating. This is an important number to pay attention to because it can save you money if you know what to look for. Most high performance tires come with a higher speed rating, even though you’ll never use it, know what you’re actually paying for. And be cautious. Most tires with a high speed rating have softer rubber and don’t last as long. Common tire speed ratings: Q= 99 mph S= 112 mph T= 118 mph U= 124 mph H= 130 mph V= up to 149 mph Z= 149 mph and above W= 168 mph Y= 186 mph by: Ronald Baker

The Hiker

A farmer in an old truck was driving to town when he spotted a hitchhiker carrying a heavy backpack and a big suitcase. Being a caring man, the farmer pulled over and asked the young man if he wanted a ride. Even though the truck looked like it was about to fall apart, the young man put his suitcase in the cab and climbed aboard. But the farmer was confused when he noticed that the man was still wearing the backpack. “Why don’t you take a load off, sonny, and put that pack in the back with your suitcase?” asked the farmer. The hiker responded, “That’s very kind of you sir, but I wasn’t sure if the truck could carry the extra weight, so I thought I’d carry it myself.”

The Govornator

Jean Claude Van Dam, Steven Segal, and Arnold Schwarzenegger all decide to go out trick-or-treating as musical composers for Halloween. They go into a costume store and look for masks. Jean Claude sees a costume that he likes and says, “I think I’ll go as Beethoven.” Steven Segal sees a costume that grabs his attention and says, “I’ll be Mozart.” Arnold had a tough time finding a costume that he liked, but he eventually found one that appeased his interest. He picks up a costume and said, “I’ll be Bach.”

Not everyone enjoys being the centre of attention or the class clown. And thank goodness for that or our teachers would be challenged even more than they already are! Life Lines This monthly column by Joanne (Jody) Brown, MSW, RSW, is designed to help you make better connections, and live happier lives. Sometimes we just need to ask the question. You can learn more about her practice at www. Authenticbeing.ca or contact her at 403-983-2230 or NLP4you@ shaw. ca to book a free 30 minute consultation today.

Dear Lifelines; I’m a quiet person but I think that things would be easier in life if I was more outgoing. In school, I was told not to be so quiet so maybe I should change and try to be louder and more extroverted so I fit in better. What is best for me? Signed, Quiet Guy Dear Quiet Guy; Not everyone enjoys being the centre of attention or the class clown. And thank goodness for that or our teachers would be challenged even more than they already are! When you say that you were quiet in school, there is nothing wrong with that! Quiet and introverted people are just as valuable as those that are more outgoing and gregarious. You have many things to offer the classroom and the trick is for you to feel safe and comfortable enough in the classroom environment in order to participate in some way. Sometimes you have to advocate for yourself (I recall asking a Grade 9 teacher if we could recite our poems into a tape recorder to share with the class instead of a live presentation) or sometimes you will get a gifted teacher who is compassionate and understands the benefit of diversity in the classroom and who will tease out your talent and encourage growth in creative, non-threatening ways. As we grow and mature, life throws us many situations that challenge us in various ways. When dealing with these challenges, there are different perspectives that we can think about as we muddle our way through doing the best we can to honour our own unique selves. We can think about moving towards what

34 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

brings us joy or - less desirably - we can think about moving away from things that make us uncomfortable. When we find ourselves moving away and avoiding things, we see that it’s quite a fearful existence and one that puts us on the defensive all the time. However, move towards experiences that bring us joy that puts you in the driver’s seat allowing you to choose or shape the experiences that you have so that they will be more enjoyable for you. For instance, when I received that public speaking assignment in grade 9, I did it and failed miserably! My mind went blank and I froze - being the centre of attention was definitely not within my comfort zone! So it was after this experience that I approached the teacher and asked if we might use a slightly different presentation style by pre-recording the poem and presenting it in that format. My teacher was kind enough to allow us the opportunity to choose and the outcome goal for him was still attained – we all learned the poems and participated in a way that was comfortable and safe for each of us. By slightly altering the situation, I was able to move towards something that I enjoyed participating in. To further illustrate the need to honour your solitude-loving personality, I would invite you to check out a TED TALK by Susan Cain that discusses the benefits of introverts and the challenges that they face in our seemingly extrovert-biased society http:// www.ted.com/talks/susan_cain_the_power_of_introverts?language=en To sum it all up, experiment and see what is right for you! Taking risks and chances are necessary to grow and you can still do this by honouring your needs. Try and move towards the things that excite and interest you in a way that seems a good fit with who you are. Exposure to new experiences, people and situations will help you find out more about your authentic self so you don’t have to pretend to be someone you are not. Sincerely, Lifelines “Isn’t it refreshing to know that what comes perfectly natural for you is your greatest strength? Your power is in your nature.” Laurie

Is All This Health Talk Bringing You Down?

Langdon

From what to eat, when to eat, when to sleep and which side of the bed to sleep on (yes there’s a study!), to drink coffee or not drink coffee, to working out but not too much, to good fats, bad fats and no fats!! No wonder you’re exhausted – it’s literally become a full-time job keeping track of what’s good for you and what’s not. We all know that our grandmothers had some great advice on how to live – get plenty of sleep, eat a healthy balanced diet, walk lots and try not to worry. The key word is balance – too much of anything is just crazy and not enough of the good stuff (sleep and nutrition) will obviously deplete our body of strength and vitality How Does The Mouth Show Signs of Health? Just like our hair, skin and nails, the mouth also provides a window to systemic health by revealing signs of inflammation, infection, growths and other tissue changes. Seeing your dentist on a regular basis does not replace going to your medical doctor to report health concerns – but maintaining routine exams and cleanings does enable the dental team to ask questions and share noticeable changes to your oral health. Nutrients for the Mouth and Body Eating a healthy balanced diet is the foundation for a healthy body and a healthy mouth. Poor nutrition doesn’t cause oral issues like periodontal disease – but the lack of nutrition does enable the disease to progress at a faster rate and cause more extensive damage. A diet high in sugar (especially sugary drinks) has never gained approval as not only is it linked to rampant dental decay, it also induces systemic inflammation and contributes to weight gain and the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Fatty Liver Disease. A diet low in sugar not only keeps your smile bright but greatly increases your overall health. Eating a diet high in fibre, lean protein, good fats from avocado and coconut sources and complex carbohydrates like brown rice and quinoa will keep you satisfied throughout the day without ruining your smile. Including good dairy is also important for strong teeth and bones and can be the perfect snack option. Drinking Lots of Water Enjoy your morning coffee but don’t forget to drink lots of fresh water. Drinking water acts as a mouth cleanser, helping to rinse away food debris and keep breath fresh. And drinking water is important for maintaining hydration – so the brain and organs function optimally. Langdon Dental See ad on page 35

STRATHMORE SHINES Take a bow, Strathmore! The 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games were a huge success. The theme of the Games was “Our Time to Shine” and that is exactly what happened last month as more than 1200 participants from across the province competed in 17 events. “The displays of athleticism, sportsmanship and camaraderie that we saw at the Games was absolutely wonderful,” said David Eggen, Minister of Culture and Tourism. “Exactly what these Games are all about.” It’s no surprise Zone 2 (Big Country, which Strathmore is a part of) was awarded the President’s Spirit of Participation Award. Zone 2 athletes also captured the Lieutenant Governor’s Cup, awarded to the zone showing the greatest improvement from the previous Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games. While the economic impact was huge for the community, the real legacy belongs to the host volunteer organization and the town of Strathmore. I believe it also opens the door to host an Alberta Youth Summer Games down the road.

WINNING UGLY!

It has been a tough start to the season for the defending Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders, although you wouldn’t know it by their record. “We’re not the prettiest girl at the dance, but our dance card is full.” says Stamps head coach and GM John Hufnagel. “We have to improve as a football team, especially on offense. I like where we are at (heading into the bye week), I like the character of this football team, and I like our ability to win close games. We just have to get better as the season progresses.” Despite the massive injuries on the offensive line, the Stampeders have shown good teams find a way to win. The Stamps may not match their 15 regular season wins from last year, but they will only continue to improve.

in 2013 and he followed that up by being named the most outstanding lineman in the league in 2014. Stampeder assistant General Manager John Murphy says he has made a real impression with the Giants organization. He might be a little undersized but he makes up for that in the classroom as he has a very high IQ. If he doesn’t make the Giants opening day roster, the chances are very high he will be offered a practice roster spot. Even if he does get cut, there are no guarantees he will re-sign with the Stampeders. He will be an unrestricted free agent and there would be a huge bidding war for this talented player.

The one question I get all the time from fans? “When is Brett Jones going to return from his NFL tryout with the New York Giants?” You may not like the answer, as I don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon. Jones was the rookie of the year in the CFL

EDMONTON OILER LOVE IN!

SHAW CHARITY CLASSIC!

I am a big fan of Ron MacLean but I did get a kick of out of his prediction last month on Sportsnet that the Oilers will win a Stanley Cup in the next 2 to 4 years.

The field is set and the PGA’s Champions Tour is back at the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary, August 5 - 9.

As I stated in this article a few months ago, the Oilers are certainly heading in the right direction. They have changed the culture. They have a good head coach and they have a generational superstar in Connor McDavid. What they don’t have is a top 10 goalie or a true shut down defenseman. The Oilers overpaid free agent defenseman Andrej Sekera and Darnell Nurse should not be rushed to the NHL. The Oilers will not be an easy out in the league this season, but I will be surprised if they make the playoffs. The real question is, which Alberta team will win the Cup first? As much as I love the direction the Flames are heading, I do admit, I think it will be the Oilers. But not in the next 2 to 4 years.

It’s the strongest field in the three year history of the event featuring Hall of Famers and multiple major winners, like Bernard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Mark O’Meara, Iam Woosnam and Lee Janzen, some of the biggest names in the game. This year’s event is not on a long weekend, so there is no excuse not to take in the action. About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for over 30 years. start, stop and reset. In our lives we are going to continuously go through this cycle of start - stop - reset. So we might as well own and empower the process instead of denying it. The secret is when you slow down, your vibration speeds up! When you slow down, you make room for more. How do we shift and empower the cycle? Start with these simple strategies for the start - stop - reset cycle.

The Start. Many have said start with the end in mind. I’m going

to share with you one very powerful way to do that. This refers to your vision or your dream. Let’s take for example, wellness and what that means for you. Everyone will have their own personal version of it. What is it to be well? What is it to feel well? What is it to live well? What is your ultimate vision of living well? Sit with that question for a moment. Get a crystal clear picture of the things you would be doing if you were living that ultimate vision. Now let’s add to that. How will you be? How will you show up? What will you emanate? Let that in and add that to your vision. You can visualize this, draw it out, write it down or make a voice recording. This does not have to take a long time and it will really enhance your actions.

be doing if you were living that ultimate dream. Choose just one. Then let your inner guide choose another.

The Stop. This is sure to happen, so simply let it. The Reset. With the vision you created in ‘The Start’ it will be

easy for you to step in and start again, so start. It really is that simple. It will always be different than the time when you first created your vision, so create your ‘start’ – don’t re-create what you had before. Start from where you are now. Always. Accept the truth. Own the truth. Live in the truth. Celebrate the truth. Carla

Broccoli Cheese Bites This may sound a little strange, but I love vegetables. Though it hasn’t always been that way, they are now probably my favourite and fantastic food group. I guess favourite because they are what I juice every morning and fantastic because all the research I have done has shown me how healthy they are for my body. The more research I do, the more excited I get, knowing the wonderful things I am doing for my body. Now having said all that, I know it is not easy for most people to eat vegetables every single day and trust me, I was that person until I started juicing; but that is not what this article is about. It’s about this crazy easy and fabulously delicious broccoli recipe I found and I guarantee, even if you do not like broccoli, you are going to love these “Broccoli Cheese Bites”!! I have made them three days in a row now. They take 10 minutes to throw together and 15 minutes to bake and they are gone by noon. I’ve done a tutorial for you so you can see how easy they are and your kids are going to devour them and not even know they are eating broccoli and you are going to feel all good inside that you are feeding healthy goodness to your family.

Staggered entry August 4th to September 23. Then put your steamed broccoli, shredded cheese, crumbled Ritz Crackers and one egg into your food processor and blend until well blended. You will need to scrape the sides only once – this blending takes about one minute altogether.

Then, using two tablespoons, scrape the mixture off one spoon into the other, putting the broccoli mixture into the tins (about a tablespoon for each muffin). Crunch up about 10 Ritz crackers and sprinkle on top of each. Pop into the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Let muffins cool for a bit, then run a butter knife around the edges and pop out. Start to eat immediately because you don’t have the willpower to wait.

Immediately start on your next batch because they will disappear before your eyes. DID YOU KNOW: Broccoli has a strong, positive impact on our body’s detoxification system, and researchers have recently identified one of the key reasons for this detox benefit. Glucoraphanin, gluconasturtiian, and glucobrassicin are 3 glucosinolate phytonutrients found in a special combination in broccoli. This dynamic trio is able to support all steps in body’s detox process, including activation, neutralization, and elimination of unwanted contaminants. Isothiocyanates (ITCs) are the detox-regulating molecules made from broccoli’s glucosinolates, and they help control the detox process at a genetic level. I will be running three 90 Day trial groups starting after the August long weekend (August 4). All participants get free weekly body fat composition along with their weekly weight and measurements. Group 1) Ketogenic: Our ketosis program is recommended for individuals with over 50 lbs to lose in this 90 day period. Regular Phase 1 protocol plus a daily 30 minute walk or yoga. My expectations are that these folks will rip through their fat, as ketosis is the fastest way, muscle mass will be maintained but likely no gains in muscle here. Group 2) Alternative: formally coined ‘Athletic’. If you are looking at 20-40lbs over the 90 days. Regular Phase 1 protocol plus one fruit, one starch and one dairy. I recommend a formal workout program here that focuses on weights, cardio and flexibility. Some suggestions for at home are P90x, JNL or Rush Fit. I see the best of both worlds for this group, fat loss, leaning out, toning and possible muscle gains. Group 3) Maintenance with an edge: This is the last 10 lbs group or my clients on Maintenance that want a more structured routine and want to use IP Product as a supplement for building muscle and leaning out. I recommend switching out 8 0z of your meat on maintenance for two IP packs, or 4 oz for one pack and usual night time snack for IP treat. Maintenance clients are not as interested in weight loss but usually don't mind replacing 10 20 lbs of fat with muscle to produce a leaning physique. This group will still have the indulgence day or two with correction. All three groups will get the anti-inflammatory benefits of being on a program. Maintenance dieters that miss the high energy, beautiful skin and great sleep from Phase 1 will enjoy getting some of those old benefits back. The winner of each group will receive a gift certificate for the Keg and also be able to donate one month of IP protocol to a friend that needs it. We are looking at BFA changes only for this one. Good luck everyone! I will also be doing one, I can’t decide between 2 and 3, so I will keep you posted. Once you decide on one, you are in for the full 90 days!! Each group will receive three cheat cards to use over the course of the program. Good luck everyone!

This year, while Pranava Yoga is hosting summer camps for kids, I am doing yoga with kids EVERY day!

Health & Beauty

These kids are teaching me the how and why it is great to be a kid. As an adult. Every day.

As I write this we are halfway through our second week of camps in July. These camps have been organized by the lovely Danielle Harris, who is not only an amazing mom and yoga instructor, she is a fun, talented and inspired summer camp coordinator. Her brilliant inspiration of teaching the children a new yoga philosophy each day through activities, games and time in nature makes finding the inspiration for my one-hour yoga class with kids a breeze. What always blows my mind is how much I learn from my students – whether they are kids or adults, every one I have ever taught has taught me something. I am sure every teacher of any subject will attest to this. These kids are teaching me the how and why it is great to be a kid. As an adult. Every day. I remember when I first starting teaching kids yoga. Forgive me if I have told you this story before. I had a big group of 6-8 year olds booked in for my first class and this is how I saw it going... We would come into the studio and enjoy the quiet, sweet smelling calmness of the space, I would teach a breathing exercise, enjoy some fun yoga poses and games, and by the end we would be happily exhausted and enjoy a lovely quiet relaxation at the end. Perfect, right? Here is how it actually went... In comes 10 kids into our lovely studio and by the time I made it from the lobby to the studio space, almost every one was running as fast as they could in a circle while yelling at the top of their lungs, while the remaining ones were smooshing their faces on the mirror or jumping on the bolsters. So ok... I call out “Who wants to do yoga?!” and at least half yelled back “No!”.... Oh boy.

What I Am Learning From The Masters

Two years later, one amazing Rainbow Kids Yoga weekend (attention all teachers/OT’s and support workers), and dozens of kids and classes later I have a few more tools in this belt. Classes certainly don’t look like the blissful space of a thoughtfully craft-

½ price ed adult class, but I can now successfully use the elements that kids naturally relate to, and share the wisdom of yoga through stories, games, and imagination.

I think I may have stumbled upon the fountain of youth.

But tools to relate to kids is not the same as feeling like a kid.

I am finding so much blessing in learning how to play again. In turning my imagination into a place that is even more real than the real world, even if for a few minutes at a time. In learning to make a friend by saying “Hello, my name is Becky”. In remembering how to experience something like it is new to me, even if I have seen it/done it a dozen times before. Finding bravery to try something new. To run after one another until my breath and body give out. Learning how to be silly again.

Unlearning how to be an adult, just a little bit. I think I may have stumbled upon the fountain of youth. It is the youth. If only we could remember more often how GOOD it is to have our imagination take us on a journey, or how much FUN it is to make up riddles and jokes that make no sense, and how EMPOWERING it is to feel our body get strong, our heart grow more courage... we can keep the best parts of being a kid, even as we are in our adulthood. I intend to keep studying with the masters!

When we hear or see the word hygiene, we automatically think of cleanliness of the body; but did you know that there is sleep hygiene too? What it really means is: “Healthy and common sense habits that help improve our sleep patterns.” Things that you can do to make sure you have the best chance at a refreshing sleep and not just for you, but your children too.

Health & Beauty

Here are 6 simple ways to improve your family’s sleep. 1. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning. This helps the body’s natural clock to stay the same and should not be ignored. Going to sleep late on weekends and sleeping in can throw off this natural schedule. 2. Avoid caffeine (sodas, chocolate, tea or coffee) in the late afternoon or evening. A glass of warm milk before bed is one of the oldies, if you can have milk! If you find either you or your children are going too often to the bathroom at night, it might be a good habit not to have anything to drink before going to sleep. 3. Don’t spend a lot of non-sleep time in bed. Many of us use the bed for lounging around, studying, knitting, watching TV, calling a friend, playing with toys, and/or reading a book. These situations should be avoided as much as possible because the brain makes connections between places (the bedroom) and events (sleeping) and the bedroom should be associated with sleeping and/or for adults (fun time)!

Sleep Hygiene is a Family Affair Natural Choices By Cynthia Barnesky – Holistic Practitioner/Certified Professional Spiritual Life Coach and owner of SunRise Healing Center: Specializes in helping you with the natural ways of healing through her services of Inner Clarity Spiritual Life Coaching, Intuitive Massage, Reflexology, IonCleanse Detox Foot Bath, Intuitive Readings, Reconnective Healing, and many natural healing products. For more information visit her website: www.sunrisehealingcenter.com or give her a call: 403-934-6416.

4. Exercise is an important part of healthy life, but not just before bedtime. It stimulates the body and mind and the brain will be confused if you want to go to sleep right afterwards. Exercise should be a part of your daily routine as a healthy lifestyle that will lead to feeling naturally tired by bedtime. 5. Make sure your bedroom and bed is comfortable and relaxing. Keep electronic devices out of the bedroom; this includes disconnecting the kids. A good mattress that suits each family members sleeping position is a must too. Making sure that the temperature in the room is not too hot or not too cold and that goes along with the body temperature too!

6. It is bedtime but you are just not tired. Try a warm bath with lavender essential oil about an hour before bedtime. This causes the body temperature to rise and then fall which helps promote relaxation and then sleep. These are a few sleep hygiene steps you and your family can try to help promote a healthy, relaxing and rejuvenating sleep habits. Everyone is different and needs to respond accordingly. Sleep is one of the most important steps to ensure you and your family are happy and healthy, so ‘good night’! BACK TO GOOD

WHOLE FOODS MARKET & DELI

OPENING THIS FALL 232 – 3RD AVE, STRATHMORE

YOUR NEW DOWNTOWN MARKET There are so many different types of teas to choose from that I find myself standing and reading labels for quite a while when it comes to choosing a tasty, refreshing tea to make my summer iced tea with. Remember when all there was was good old Red Rose tea? And then there was green tea and now there has been a tea explosion and even specialty shops that just sell TEA! It has been regarded for thousands of years in the east as a key to good health, happiness, and wisdom, and now tea has caught the attention of researchers in the west, who are discovering the many health benefits of different types of teas. Studies have found that some teas may help with cancer, heart disease and diabetes, encourage weight loss, lower cholesterol, and bring about mental alertness. Tea also appears to have antimicrobial qualities. So let’s get started. First, I would like to give you health help when it comes to choosing your tea and then I’m going to share some very delightful iced tea recipes that you are going to LOVE. Here’s what some studies have found about the potential health benefits of tea: Green tea: Made with steamed tea leaves, it has a high concentration of EGCG and has been widely studied. Green tea’s antioxidants may interfere with the growth of bladder, breast, lung, stomach, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers, prevent clogging of the arteries, burn fat, counteract oxidative stress on the brain, reduce risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, reduce risk of stroke, and improve cholesterol levels. Black tea: Made with fermented tea leaves, black tea has the highest caffeine content and forms the basis for flavoured teas like chai, along with some instant teas. Studies have shown that black tea may protect lungs from damage caused by exposure to cigarette smoke. It also may reduce the risk of stroke. White tea: Uncured and unfermented. One study showed that white tea has the most potent anticancer properties compared to more processed teas. Oolong tea: In an animal study, those given antioxidants from oolong tea were found to have lower bad cholesterol levels. One variety of oolong, Wuyi, is heavily marketed as a weight loss supplement, but science hasn’t backed the claims.

Luscious Joys And what about all those herbal teas out there made from herbs, fruits, seeds, or roots steeped in hot water? Herbal teas have lower concentrations of antioxidants than green, white, black, and oolong teas. Their chemical compositions vary widely depending on the plant used. Varieties include ginger, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, hibiscus, jasmine, rosehip, mint, rooibos (red tea), chamomile, and Echinacea. Here are some findings: Chamomile tea: Its antioxidants may help prevent complications from diabetes, like loss of vision and nerve and kidney damage, and stunt the growth of cancer cells. Echinacea: Often touted as a way to fight the common cold, the research on Echinacea has been inconclusive. Hibiscus: A small study found that drinking three cups of hibiscus tea daily lowered blood pressure in people with modestly elevated levels. Rooibos (red tea): A South African herb that is fermented. Although it has flavonoids with cancer-fighting properties, medical studies have been limited. Here is a sweet tea recipe. It comes from Dana Clover @ cravingcomfort.blogspot and she swears it is the best sweet tea recipe (of all time). I would use an oolong or Rooibos black tea for this recipe, which I’m going to make after I finish this article.

Perfect Sweet Tea

(Makes 1 gallon) (Adapted from the Lone Star Steak House) 12 regular tea bags 1 Quart (4 Cups) - Boiling Water 3 Quarts (12 cups) - Cool Water 1 1/2 Cups Sugar. 1/4 teaspoon - Baking Soda (this is the SECRET ingredient!!) Sprinkle baking soda into a pitcher (I use a gallon-size Mason Jar but many people have voiced concerns about pouring boiling water into a glass container, so use whatever container you’d like). Add tea bags to the pitcher/baking soda, pour boiling water over tea bags, cover and allow to steep for 15 minutes. Remove and toss out tea bags, add sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Add cool water. Refrigerate until cold and ready to drink. Serve over ice, take a nice long sip. Swoon. Repeat. Kathryn Hartwell

THE SEMICOLON PROJECT

Today I went to a tattoo artist, and for $60 I let a man with a giant Jesus tattoo on his head ink a semi-colon onto my wrist where it will stay until the day I die. By now, enough people have started asking questions that it made sense for me to start talking, and talking about things that aren’t particularly easy. 48 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

We’ll start here: a semi-colon is a place in a sentence where the author has the decision to stop with a period, but chooses not to. A semi-colon is a reminder to pause and then keep going. In April I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. By the beginning of May I was popping anti-depressants every morning with a breakfast I could barely stomach. In June, I had to leave a job I’d wanted since I first set foot on this campus as an incoming freshmen because of my mental health. Depression took a lot from me, but one of the most difficult things that my mental illness snatched from me was the title of Summer Welcome Leader. I got this tattoo as a promise to myself that I would never willingly end my sentence. I got it as a reminder to take this summer as a pause, and then to keep going strong next year. I also got this tattoo to open up conversations between myself and other humans about mental illness, because as difficult as The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Altogether Different

mental illness is, what’s more difficult is feeling stigmatized. Or like you failed. Or like people are feeling sorry for you. There’s no question that the stigma surrounding mental illness inhibits struggling humans from finding the help that they need, and I find this absolutely heartbreaking because I know I am not alone when I say that depression destroyed my GPA, my relationships with my friends, my involvement on campus, and much, much more. So if one out of every four people struggle with mental illness, then why did I feel like I was the only person who had ever experienced this before? If 25 of every hundred people I pass on the street have a clinical need for psychiatric care, then why did I feel like I had to hide my shaky hands every time the panic hit me harder than a train or feel like I had to shove every suicidal thought on a shelf behind old dictionaries and behind classic novels where no one could find them? 30,000 people die from suicide every year and that’s more than twice that of HIV and AIDS, but still I am embarrassed to tell you that I can’t get out of bed in the mornings. Let me make this clear for those who don’t know me well: I am not who you would expect to be depressed. Let me say this louder for those in the back: you cannot put me in a box decorated with black nail polish and frequent trips to Hot Topic because you don’t wear depression like a necklace or put on anxiety like a hat. You cannot spot depression because you become depression. I am depression and I am not the silent girl dressed in all black hiding in the back row of your lecture hall. I am depression and I am the perfect picture of a 20 year old sorority girl at an SEC school. I am depression and I am oversized fraternity formal t-shirts and Nike shorts that hang off my frail, starved hips that the Greek town girls envy so much. I am depression and I am the shining face on my sorority’s executive board and the bright smile touring high school seniors around my beautiful, botanical garden of a college campus. I am depression and behind stylish sunglasses too big for my face and a resume too long for a college sophomore, no one ever knew that my illness had crippled me so severely that I spent 20 hours a day wrapped in blankets in my bed, trying desperately to fight away the bitter cold that had taken residence in my heart and mind. I hid myself away in my 7 million dollar sorority house, tucked somewhere between “you bought your friends” and “can’t daddy’s credit card fix your problems?” I called 250 women on my campus by the name of sister but I was still lying at the bottom of a lake, unable to breathe while, effortlessly, everyone around me grew gills. Because no one tells you what to do when your life becomes a ten-car pileup during rush hour traffic. Because no one tells you how to tell the very people who framed your life and hung it up on the wall for everyone to admire the girl who has it all together that nothing is going right anymore. No one tells you what to do when the good days dwindle so severely that you can’t remember the last time you woke up and didn’t want to die. I was 13-year old the first time someone told me that suicide was a selfish act. I was 15 the first time someone I knew killed themselves. I was 20 years old when suicide started to make sense. Every 16.2 minutes, someone takes their life. In the time you’ve been reading about the crippling disease that made me want to take my own life, someone just took theirs. And still, we shame and stereotype and stigmatize the people who need the most help and teach our children that having to ask for help is something we should feel bad about, when in fact sometimes strength is admitting that you don’t have any left. Oftentimes I feel like depression ruined my life. It took so much that it’s become a desperate desire for something good to

come from this horrible experience. My hope is that, because of my experience, I can be an advocate and champion for mental health awareness. That I can start conversations with girls in my chapter and students on this campus and hopefully influence someone’s life for the better. I am lucky. I am lucky because I live on a campus where my therapy visits are free and my antidepressants only cost $10 and there’s a disability center that will help me get through my classes. I am lucky because I have a mother who believed me and supported me when I said I was depressed and never made it sound like my fault. I am lucky because I have a sister who drives all the way to Columbia to see me when I need it. I am lucky because I have a job with Mizzou Tour Team and bosses that aren’t afraid to sit me down and make sure I’m eating and sleeping and doing okay. I am lucky because I have Carter and Jackson and Esther and Jordan and Kenzie and Erin and Brittany and Jim and Grace and so many others who, in their own individual way, have weaved a support network so caring and strong that there was no chance of me ever falling through the cracks. The problem is that people struggling far worse than me don’t have half the support I do. Mizzou saved my life. Not everyone has a “Mizzou”. So I will show my tattoo proudly and champion for the people who cannot champion for themselves. Every day that I say no to the dark thoughts depression tries to tangle my mind with, I am winning a battle that society has not made easy to win. I’ve learned a lot from my struggle with depression. Every day is another day of riotous and endless waves of transformation and as much as I wish it didn’t hurt so bad when it hit me, I can’t say that I’d change who I am or the struggles I went through. Another thing: my tattoo is just slightly crooked when I look at it. It’s parallel with my arm, but crooked when I look down at it. At first that bothered me. And then I remembered that life’s a little crooked, too. And now I love it even more. It’s hard to find a place to end this think piece, but I’ll end it with the quote that I keep on my computer screen at all times, so I never forget. I hope anyone that’s ever struggled with their mental health never forgets, either:

“You are worthy of breathing. Someday you will learn that. So don’t ask yourself why you can’t be Smarter Stronger Cuter Because depression took a lot from you and you are still fighting to take it back.” For more information on the tattoo I got, please visit http://www.projectsemicolon.com. If you need help, please check out online resources or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. And as always, ask for help. Never fear admitting you need more than you can give yourself. Heather Parrie facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

SUMMERTIME FUN

Frozen Paint Art

COOL fun on a hot day! This really is a fun & easy project that is suited to y age level. Pour tempra paint into an ice cube tray (buy this at the dollar store). It comes in lots of different rainbow colours. Put it in the freezer for about 20 minutes and let it begin to harden, and then add the Popsicle sticks (so they remain firmly upright) and let the paint freeze overnight. The next day, you have frozen paint! The kids can paint outside on cardboard or poster paper; they will be creating for hours!

Kids love blowing bubbles. There’s something about the pretty rainbow colours and watching in awe as they float away with the anticipation of how long a bubble will last until it bursts. Blowing bubbles can and will keep your kids occupied outside for quite some time. It’s a fun way to spend a blistering hot summer afternoon. There are lots of fun and easy indoor and outdoor projects you can do yourself to help keep your youngster’s busy this summer.

As a special treat after all their hard work, make some Frozen Fruit Pops Blend some mixed berries & yogurt and freeze in small Dixie cups with Popsicle sticks. YUM! These will be a real hit & a fresh, healthy treat for the kids.

“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” ― Albert Einstein

Make Your Own Bubbles You need 1 litre of hot water, ½ cup of good quality dishwashing liquid (like Sunlight or Dawn), 2–4 tablespoons of glycerin (it makes the bubbles thick and last longer). You can find glycerin in the baking section of your supermarket. Glycerin is also great for adding to play dough. Mix all your ingredients together, trying not to make bubbles as you do – as gently as possible. Leave overnight (the longer you leave it, the better. 1–2 days is perfect!)

Or, try this out!

Kool-Aid Playdough 1 cup flour (up to 2 if you feel it is thin) 1 cup boiling water 3 tbsp corn oil ½ cup salt 1 package Kool-Aid Mix each ingredient in with the flour. Add the boiling water and mix thoroughly. Knead until very well mixed. Add more flour if necessary for texture to create soft dough. Store in a Ziploc bag or Tupperware container. This is super fun!

Microwave Puff Paint 1 tbsp self -raising flour Food colouring 1 tbsp salt Cardboard (I used a cereal box) Q-Tips (for paint brushes) Combine the self-raising flour, salt and a few little drops of food colouring in a bowl. Add a little water to make a nice smooth paste. Create your masterpiece on a nice thick sheet of cardboard or poster paper. Microwave the design on high for 10 - 30 seconds until the paint puffs and it's all nice and dry.

Invisible Ink From: The ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions. Water 4-6 drops of food colouring Paintbrush Paper Hair dryer (optional) First, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of water together. Next, take your paintbrush and start writing a secret message or draw a picture with the baking soda/water mixture. When finished, you'll have to wait until the message is completely dry before continuing to the next step. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the process. Next, get 1 tablespoon of water and mix it with 4-6 drops of food colouring. To reveal your secret message, paint the food colouring water mixture over your message. Your children will be amazed! This would be a fun activity for older children to write secret messages to each other... or even at a pirate themed party with invisible treasure maps to decode. Use your imagination!! We all know how important it is for you to spend quality time with your family. The way you treat your children has got to be the number one most important responsibility in life. Be kind, understanding and love them with every molecule of your being. Kathryn Hartwell

A lesson learned the hard way When I was a boy, I remember a day I went fishing and I got lost in deep thought. My dog was with me and I had wished that I were a fish. I imagined that they had a trouble-free life. I wished harder for what seemed like hours. Suddenly I was struggling to breathe and I was flopping around like a fish out of water. I soon realized that I WAS a fish - and out of water! My dream had come true and I was dying from oxygen intoxication. It didn’t take long before I no longer wanted to be a fish. It took a great effort to flip myself into the water just to survive. As I dodged the bigger fishes and snapping turtles I screamed, “NEVER blub blub MIND! I blub blub DON’T WANT TO BE A FISH!” I sped away and crashed into a wall – I said, “oh, dam…” I wished again that I would not be a fish anymore. Then my second wish came true and I was transformed back into a human again -- I was immensely relieved. Relieved, and drowning! I wildly swam toward shore and pulled myself out of the water relatively death-free. My dear old dog was there to greet me and he licked my face. Never again did I wish to be anything but myself. Farmer John Farmer John lived on a quiet rural highway. But, as time went by, the traffic built up at an alarming rate. The traffic was so heavy and so fast that his chickens were being run over at a rate of three to six a day.

So one day, Farmer John called the sheriff’s office and said, “You’ve got to do something about all of these people driving so fast and killing all of my chickens.” What do you want me to do?” asked the sheriff. “I don’t care, just do something about those crazy drivers!” So the next day he had the county workers go out and erected a sign that said: SLOW: SCHOOL CROSSING.

Three days later, Farmer John called the sheriff and said, “You’ve got to do something about these drivers. The ‘school crossing’ sign seems to make them go even faster.” So, again, the sheriff sends out the county workers and they put up a new sign: SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY. That really sped them up. So Farmer John called and called and called every day for three weeks. Finally, he asked the sheriff, “Your signs are doing no good. Can I put up my own sign?” The sheriff told him to go for it. He was going to let the Farmer John do just about anything in order to get him to stop calling everyday to complain. The sheriff got no more calls from Farmer John. Three weeks later, curiosity got the best of the sheriff and he decided to give Farmer John a call. “How’s the problem with those drivers? Did you put up your sign?” “Oh, I sure did. And not one chicken has been killed since then. I’ve got to go. I’m very busy.” He hung up the phone. The sheriff was really curious now and he thought to himself, “I’d better go out there and take a look at that sign... it might be something that WE could use to slow down drivers...” So the sheriff drove out to Farmer John’s house, and his jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign. It was spray-painted on a sheet of wood: NUDIST COLONY! GO SLOW AND WATCH OUT FOR THE CHICKS!

Travel

TOKELAU IS FOR SERIOUS TRAVELERS ONLY!

Well, if you’re looking to run away from it all, Tokelau is the place. Tokelau’s name is Polynesian for “north wind”, and it’s one of the most isolated places on earth. It takes 20 hours to sail there from its nearest neighbour, Samoa, and you can forget about flying - there’s no airstrip. It’s largely due to this remote factor that indigenous culture has been preserved on Tokelau to a far greater degree than elsewhere in the Pacific. Each of Tokelau’s three atolls - Atafu, Fakaofo and Nukunonu - is a ribbon of tiny motu (islands) surrounding a lagoon. If you’re into counting off countries, don’t leave tiny Tokelau for last. This dot in the Pacific may well be gone, swallowed up by rising seas due to global warming; it has no significant land that is more two metres above high water of ordinary tides. There is little tourism on the atolls of Tokelau. Thus, there are few tourist attractions... which mean that a visit to Tokelau affords a quiet getaway, far off the beaten path. The main recreational activities are swimming and snorkeling in the lagoons and coral reefs. During a special event, such as a holiday or pageant, tourists may be treated to performances such as traditional singing and dancing. There is one hotel in Tokelau, the Luana Liki. This hotel is located on Nukunonu. There is one resort, Fale Fa, also on Nukunonu. There is also a guest house on Atafu, the Feliti Lopa. The best way for tourists and travelers to get to Tokelau is from Apia, Samoa, by ship or the government-run MV Tokelau provides passenger and cargo services to and from Apia every two weeks. The trip takes about 24-36 hours each way, and the ship makes the round trip in five days. Passengers must bring their own mattresses to sleep on. Food is provided, and there is

one bathroom. Since there is no harbour in Tokelau, launches are used to embark and disembark. I guess if you’re rich, you can also get there by private boat or private helicopter. The few roads on the islands are almost entirely within the four main villages. Most people get around by walking or bicycle. Travel between islands is by small boat or traditional outrigger canoe. The Luana Liki Hotel in Nukunonu is the only public eating place, which is in the only hotel. If you are staying at the Luana Liki, you will get three meals per day included in the price. Samoan beer is available in shops and at the Luana Liki Hotel, but sale is strictly rationed in Nukunonu. The Luana Liki Hotel in Nukunonu is Tokelau’s only commercial accommodation. Most food and drink is shipped to the islands, as little can be grown on these coral atolls. Each atoll consists of one village. The villages have a small-town, rural character, although, as a result of the small amount of inhabitable land, they are densely populated. All the villages hold regular inter-island sports, dancing, and fishing competitions. There, alcohol is rationed. Satellite TV and internet are recent arrivals. This would not be your conventional holiday. If you are looking for peace and a completely different experience, I’m thinking Tokelau is for you. Caldera with domes in Santorini Greece

I dream of the day I arrive in Athens. Truthfully, ask my husband and he will tell you this is the place where my heart dreams of going. In my mind, it is the most beautiful place on earth, cruising on the incredibly beautiful Aegean and Ionian seas. Oh my, I may never come home.

many kilometers, sheltered bays and coves, sandy beaches with sand-dunes, pebble beaches, coastal caves with steep rocks and dark coloured sand typical of volcanic soil and coastal wetlands? Don’t forget the candy-coloured houses carved into cliffs, sapphire waters, gleaming white buildings topped with half-spheres the colour of a stormy sky. Here, you’ll find peace and world-famous sunsets, which seem tinted with every shade of an artist’s palette. This is top on my bucket list; my heart longs for Greece!! Kathryn Hartwell

Sources: www.visitgreece.gr, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greece

The Greek sovereign land includes 6,000 islands and islets of which only 227 islands are inhabited. This is a truly unique phenomenon for the European continent. Many of these Greek beaches have been awarded the blue flag under the Blue Flags of Europe Program, providing not only swimming, but also scuba diving, snorkeling, water skiing, sailing and windsurfing. Seriously have you ever seen pictures of Santorini, Mykonos or Crete? The best part is, to get to Greece, you must first land in Rome or Athens and I’m sure I do not even need to elaborate on that!! Where else in the world will you find 16,000 km of coastline, offering highly diversified landscapes like beaches stretching over

Male or Female? You might not have known this, but a lot of non-living objects are actually either male or female. Here are some examples:

Save your time on landscaping and spend your time at the lake instead.

FREEZER BAGS: They are male, because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them.

Get a Grasshopper!

PHOTOCOPIERS: These are female, because once turned off, it takes a while to warm them up again. They are an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can also wreak havoc if you push the wrong buttons.

PowerFold® Deck Lift

TIRES: Tires are male, because they go bald easily and are often over inflated.

Rentals Available

Lift with your finger. Not your back. With our PowerFold® option, our FrontMount™ DuraMax® decks can be lifted at the touch of a switch to an upright position to make maintenance easy and storage a breeze.

HOT AIR BALLOONS: Also a male object, because to get them to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under their butt. SPONGES: These are female, because they are soft, squeezable and retain lots of water.

TRAINS: Definitely male, because they always use the same old lines for picking up people. HAMMERS: Male, because in the last 5000 years, they’ve hardly changed at all, and are occasionally handy to have around. THE REMOTE CONTROL: Female. Ha! You probably thought it would be male, but consider this: It easily gives a man pleasure, he’d be lost without it, and while he doesn’t always know which buttons to push, he just keeps trying.

THE SOLUTION FOR A DURABLE GARAGE FLOOR with

THE BEST WARRANTY IN THE INDUSTRY! With numerous option for a floor coverings, it is harder than ever to know what products are long lasting, high quality, and still safe. One product that many garage refinishers use is ZGShield® Polyurea, a new product that has come to market in the last few years, revolutionizing the industry for both the residential and commercial sectors. The possibilities are endless with the product, whether you want this in your garage, shop, barn, poolside, or driveway. It leaves a clean, anti-slip, seamless membrane that carries many advantages.

Resistant and Durable

The floor coating creates an extremely resistant and durable surface; 3x more durable than other products on the market, allowing refinishers to guarantee their floors for 20 years in residential use.

Flexible and Very Adherent

The polyurea-based flexible membrane doesn’t crack, which is a fault many epoxy-based products are criticised for. Extremely adherent, the product is totally permeable and can resist contaminants like oil, fuel and antifreeze. The flexible floor surface has excellent impact resistance and doesn’t have a problem with repeated tire movement, making it an exceptional non-skid surface.

Simple and fast installation

Once the cement has been adequately prepared, it’s easy and fast to install a polyurea-based floor covering. It can be done in one day, installed inside and out, with no dust or odour, and won’t yellow from UV ultraviolet rays. Once the final coat is applied, it dries in 3-4 hours, allowing you to move things back into your garage. This is a great advantage over other products that can take several days to install.

Eco-Safe

The polyurea coating is the only eco-safe option, being 100% environmentally friendly (LEED), with no volatile organic compounds. Zone Garage See their ad on this page

• 20 years WITHOUT CONDITION ON ADHESION • Lifetime on hazing and yellowing of the clear coat caused by UV • One days floor coating

Before After

Zone Garage offers patented ZG-SHIELD® POLYUREA and polyaspartic garage floor coatings different and superior to any product on the market. Products for concrete garage floor used by Zone Garage are 3X more resistant to abrasion than 100% solid epoxy and are 100% UV resistant, so they never turn yellow. They can be applied throughout the year regardless of weather and are completely resistant to the movement of hot tires and almost all common chemicals including calcium, salt, oil, gasoline and grease.

Our coatings for garage floor and concrete are available in a variety of solid colors, styles, granite, stains, or as clear sealer to give style to your concrete floor. Our products can also be used as a sealer on acid stained concrete, the polished or colored concrete and even stamped concrete. The most interesting part is that it only takes one day to be installed and be completely dry. The next day, you can park your car on your new garage floor and enjoy.

We moved into our new-old home in Strathmore just over 2 years ago now and have been painting, replacing light fixtures, building new fences and, when that lotto cheque arrives in the mail, putting in beautiful plank wood flooring. The biggest reno you will ever do is “The Kitchen.” Every time I walk into my kitchen, I am reminded of how I will be spending a good part of my winter. Yup, the oak cabinets really, really need to be redone. I don’t have a huge budget and we are kind of do-it-yourselfers, so I have been surfing the net looking for inspiration. WELL, I’m telling you there are a lot of really great ideas for easy low budget do-it-yourselfers to beautify your home, making it comfy and cozy. Personally, I like the old country look with darker colours and lots of wood. I came across the idea of using wood for a backsplash in the kitchen instead of tile. My husband looked at me sideways when I mentioned the idea but after I showed him the pictures, he warmed up to the idea. Talk about adding some character to your kitchen! And there are so many different choices. You can run it vertical or horizontal and finish it off with a good varnish or sealer. For your countertops, why not try stone effects? You can replace your kitchen countertops to get an attractive result that has the beauty and elegance of genuine granite and it can be used on a variety of countertop surfaces – including laminated plastic, stone, concrete, tile or wood. The result is an inexpensive alternative to countertop replacement with a finish that is both durable and beautiful. Now the cabinets… I most certainly do not have the budget to replace them; they are the natural oak colour which is ok, but I have always pre-

ferred the rich dark oak colours. Unfortunately, the important factor involved with a stained and sealed cabinet surface is that it is stained and sealed. There are very few options when attempting to change the appearance of the wood from a light to a dark stained look. You will either have to strip off the finish down to the raw wood or give the impression of that process by way of certain techniques. This is what I learned: Strip off the present finish. This involves using a paint-stripping compound to aid in breaking down the top clear coat. The secret is to let the product do its work (follow the instructions). Next, you will sand off the layer of wood that is stained, exposing the new wood below. Now simply stain and apply two coats of polyurethane over the new raw wood.

Cabinet Transformations. Rust-Oleum has an awesome product that will completely change the appearance of your cabinets. I find that this product works best over oak. The glaze coat becomes captured inside the wood grain and gives the appearance of a stained surface. There are lots of colour options available. Glaze coat. Professionals usually do this because it can be a little tricky. After preparing the surface (cleaning and de-glossing), a solvent-based glaze coat is applied over the surface of the wood. The glaze coat varies with each professional. Some will use a coloured poly/stain mixture found at a flooring supply provider. This technique is usually applied with a super fine spray tip and with several thin coats until the desired effect is reached. After it has had time to dry, you then apply a coat of polyurethane over the top. Kathryn Hartwell

SELECTING THE RIGHT REALTOR® Whether you are buying or selling your home or property, the end goal is for you to make the greatest possible deal that is in your best interest.

REALTOR®. Let’s face it, as much as there is a strong code of ethics that govern how REALTORS® perform, there are those in the business that may not have your best interest at heart. There are those who will price your home at a price that will allow them to sell your home quickly rather than advising you to price your home more to your benefit and being a little more patient given all the current market circumstances.

f you are in the market to sell your home, your goal should be to secure the highest possible price for your home. Conversely, when purchasing you want to be able to obtain the finest quality home you can find that meets your personal family needs at the lowest possible price. The question is, how can you be sure that you will achieve these goals and ensure there are no hidden surprises that will surface that will derail your intended success of buying or selling? There truly is a lot to consider, especially when you are dealing with finances that, under normal circumstances, involve the most significant investments of your lifetime. Let’s explore the world of Real Estate and take some of the mystery out of what can be very confusing and difficult decisions.

of a home is the highest price that the market will bear. A well trained and experienced REALTOR® who is doing their job ethically and correctly will help you determine the right price based on current market trends.

Do you feel they truly have your personal interest at heart rather than simply being anxious to complete another sale? Are they technology savvy? What avenues do they have to advertise your home to the marketplace other than the standard Multiple Listing Service (MLS®)? You can often get an excellent read on the personality of a REALTOR® by visiting their web site. Take the time to explore each potential candidate’s website before contacting them for an interview. Are they willing to come to your home and give you an appraisal and not just ask you questions over the phone? In other words, are you important to them? Will they work hard to help you get the most out of your home to help you prepare for your future goals? Are they the type of person who will constantly keep you updated on the showings of your home and spend the time to conduct open houses to help market your home?

Never make your home in a place. Make a home for yourself inside your own head. You’ll find what you need to furnish it memory, friends you can trust, love of learning, and other such things. That way it will go with you wherever you journey. Tad Williams

A good REALTOR® is not just someone who advertises how many homes they have been able to sell. A good REALTOR® is someone who is willing to spend the time to help you achieve your personal goals. In the end, the most important benefit for your REALTOR® is the referrals they receive from you to help them make their business grow, which brings up one more vital part of interviewing your REALTOR®. Go to their website and check for testimonials. See what other clients say about the agent you are interviewing, and finally, ask your potential candidates for references if you have any doubt. There is no better way to determine the true potential of your REALTOR® than talking directly with someone who has worked with them in the past!

I had to run to PJ’s to pick up payment for their ad and Trudy listened to me cry about my son. She called all of her prayer warriors to pray for my baby, and she continued asking for updates. mega feature in a space, enhance and/or create a focal point and add major personality. Textured – Grass cloth, woven linen, metallic and paintable wallpapers are some options when pattern is just a little too much for you or if you are just wanting to add some depth and dimension to a room. Textured wallpapers catch light differently depending on the time of day; can add a metallic quality to your more contemporary space or an earth natural texture for a more rustic space.

One of my favourite additions to any space is wallpaper. lot of clients shy away from this due to past experiences of wallpaper being old fashioned, hard to install and even harder to take down. Today’s wallpapers have endless patterns, textures and finishes to suit any style and are now strippable, requiring less elbow grease and damage to your walls. Patterned – Geometric, traditional, graphic, and floral are a few of the patterns to choose from, in an array of choices. There is truly something for everyone, every home and every style. Choosing something that is patterned but more tone on tone is a more transitional application that will stand the test of time and be more cohesive over time with your existing items and new items added to your space. A bolder and colourful style can create a

Installation – a lot of wallpapers come pre-pasted for easy installation and the glue also now gives you a lot more time to maneuver the paper to get in perfect place. Larger scale patterned papers are easier to install due to a large pattern repeat which makes it easier to match up side by side. Take down is done with a wallpaper steamer and should roll off in strips rather than in small pieces where you take a ton of time scraping away like with older wallpaper. Depending on the size of the repeat, you should always factor in 15-20% of extra paper to account for mistakes and extra cuts needed for pattern match. There are also so many other uses for wallpaper with both left overs or just to add a touch to your space. Using wall paper behind shelves for a peek-a-boo effect, lining drawers with scraps for inexpensive art work are always great uses for this new and improved design feature for your home. • The dream of the older generation was to pay off a mortgage. The dream of today’s young families is to get one. • If you owe the bank $100, that’s your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that’s the bank’s problem. A client bought a new home and the broker wanted to send flowers for the occasion. They arrived at the home and the owner read the card; it said “Rest in Peace”. The owner was angry and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist said. “Sir, I’m really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry you should imagine this: somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, “Congratulations on your new home”. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour
