When I look back over the year, and think about all the plans we have for the future year, I think about the Forrest Gump quote: “I don’t know if we each have a destiny, or if we’re all just floating around accidental… like on a breeze. What A Boy Wants For Christmas
Darren remembers accompanying his father out shopping in the toy department of Sears one Christmas Eve. Dad said, ‘What a marvellous train set. I’ll buy it.’ The girl behind the counter looked pleased and murmured, ‘Great, I’m sure your son will really love it.’ Dad replied with a glint in his eye, ‘Maybe you’re right. In that case I’ll take two.’
Reindeer’s Story at Christmas
According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers until after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl. We should have known... ONLY women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.
Father Christmas Calls
Alex was five. All of his Christmas presents were always signed, ‘from Father Christmas.’ A little while after Alex had opened all his presents on Christmas morning, we became aware that he was looking quite sad for no obvious reason. ‘What’s the matter, Alex?’ I asked. ‘Ummmm,’ replied Alex slowly. ‘I really hoped that you and mommy would give me something for Christmas.’

Short Funny Christmas Story
Just before Christmas, an honest politician, a generous lawyer and Santa Claus all got into an elevator. No, I’m not biased – she is really that cute. My new article, RAK It (Random Acts of Kindness) is a challenge. Not a challenge to write, but a challenge for YOU – the readers. Whenever I watch the news, or read the paper, I leave the stories with thoughts of “what is happening to humanity?” What IS happening to humanity? Enter, RAK It! Every month, I want you to email me at denise.newsyneighbour@gmail.com and tell me what Random Acts of Kindness you did! I will list them here every month (anonymously) and every month we’ll be reminded that there is so much GOOD out there!! Here are some suggestions to get you started: 1. It snows. Shovel your neighbour’s sidewalk. 2. While walking your dog, pick up some of the … ahem… “droppings” you see along the canal and walkways. 3. Pay for the order for the person behind you at the Tim Horton’s drive-thru. 4. After a snow fall, brush off someone’s car. 5. Park farther away at the grocery store so that someone else can have the stall closest to the main doors. 6. SMILE. 7. While in line at any store, if someone behind you has only a couple of items and you have a lot, let them go first. 8. Bake some gifts for our local law enforcement and firefighters. They have the hardest jobs, and deserve kindness. 9. Leave hot chocolate packets with “RAK It” notes on people’s vehicles in parking lots. Mmm what a nice gift to find! 10. Too many clothes? Bring them to a shelter or to those bins at the recycling depot instead of selling them. Some people truly need clothes and can’t afford them. These are just ideas! The Future looks bright for the Stampeders!
For the second straight December, I am writing my post-mortem on the Calgary Stampeders for the Newsy Neighbour. The main difference this year is I am very excited about this team’s future! Why am I so excited? It’s not just because of the emergence of quarterback Drew Tate, running back Jon Cornish and receiver Landon Talley. The reason I am so excited about the future of this organization is the flexibility John Hufnagel is going to have in the off-season. Last year at this time, the Stamps were in salary cap jail with too many high profile free agents going on the market. At the time, you knew it was going to be impossible to keep the team together and I believe I was only person in the city who suggested it was time for the Stamps to part ways with running back Joffrey Reynolds and his big ticket contract. So here we are one year later and not only will Reynolds’ contract come off the books this winter, quarterback Henry Burris will also be moved or released. The Stamps will also have to make a decision on one of their high priced receivers in Ken Yon Rambo or Romby Bryant, and all of a sudden the Stamps will have 2 or 3 of their biggest contracts off the books. The Stamps will now have the ability to explore the free agent market and spend money to improve their offensive and defensive lines. The Stampeders are a very young team with a promising future. Only five players are going to be free agents in February and I would only consider one of those players to be a key to the future. Linebacker Brandon Isaac certainly is the number one priority for the Stamps in the off-season. I would be stunned if he was not re-signed. Punter Burke Dales may have been a 2011 CFL all-star, but I firmly believe his days are numbered with this organization. Dales may have the strongest leg in the CFL, but Hufnagel was not impressed with his performance in the playoffs. He refused to coffin corner his kicks (or maybe he just doesn’t have the ability to do it) and the team gave up valuable field position settling for three punt singles. The Stamps do have a replacement waiting in the wings in Rob Maver. Maver was a good punter in University and the Stamps did make him a first round pick for a reason. Center Tim O’Neill will likely be resigned but his job as starter is anything but safe. The other two free agents are Arjei Franklin and Marc Calixte, and neither are huge difference-makers in the big picture! There are three clear areas where the Stamps will have to improve in the off-season. The offensive line, the defensive line and special team’s coverage. Because of the cap flexibility, the organization should be able to make huge upgrades in all three areas. If this happens on the free agent market, the Stamps will return as strong team in 2012! A return to playoff glory for Kelly Kisio, Mike Williamson and the Calgary Hitmen. Jon Cornish a CFL rushing title, Drew Tate an injury free CFL season as a starter and for John Hufnagel and the Calgary Stampeders a berth in the 100th Grey Cup Championship in Toronto (versus Henry Burris and the Argos). An NLL championship for Kaleb Toth and the Calgary Roughnecks. An indoor field house for the City of Calgary and the athletes who so desperately need it! Another World Title for Christine Nesbitt as she defends the World Sprint Championships at the Olympic Oval in January. A world record for Alex Halat and the amazing group of volunteers who will be playing a historic 10 day hockey game at the Chestemere Recreational Center in May. Not only will they attempt to break the Guinness world record, but they will be raising money for the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Christmas & Appliances They’re waiting… waiting for the day before Christmas to break down. Not really, but sometimes it seems that way. With all the activity leading up to Christmas, we forget about the extra load on our appliances. Here is some helpful, preventative first aid! Refrigerators - Many modern refrigerators have a fan that forces air over the condenser (thin black tubes) to remove heat. The condenser can be under the fridge (behind the front toeplate) or at the back bottom behind a very important panel (cardboard or metal) that controls air flow. If the condenser becomes blocked by lint, pet hair, etc., the fridge can’t cool. Simply unplugging the fridge, checking and gently cleaning the condenser with a thin brush and vacuum cleaner could save a service call. While doing this simple maintenance, it is a good idea to clean out your fridge. There is always something that is due for the garbage can. Don’t overload; allow air flow. A too-crammed freezer and/or fridge can result in restricted air flow. A simple fix can be storing unopened pop, juice, or pickles in the basement before you need them. Hint: A couple of plastic 2 litre pop/water bottles about two thirds full can be stored in your freezer! Ranges - Your range is going to work hard at Christmas. Big Hint: If you are going to self-clean your oven, don’t wait until just before Christmas – do it now. Generally speaking, lining the bottom of the oven with aluminum foil can be a factor in bake element failure – usually on December 24. If there seems to be something not right with your oven temperatures or range operation, get it checked now rather than trying to book a service call hours before Christmas dinner. Clothes dryers - One of the largest causes of dryer failure and a notable cause of house fires is lint build-up in a dryer. Dryers require a proper air flow; without it, overheating can quickly occur. Usually, this means that the lint screen and venting should be cleaned. Is there good air flow at the outside dryer vent? In freezing weather, the humidity vented out of a partially blocked vent can condense, or even freeze in the vent, causing further air flow blockage. Manufacturers make appliances as low maintenance as possible, but there are some things you can still do. The most important part is to read the use & care guide. Information can also be obtained from manufacturers and independent appliance dealer’s websites. An informed consumer is the only way to be. Do not rely on advertising or spectacular claims. Remember - there are 4 sides to every story; one side, the other side, political/media side and the truth. Christmas Family Page Your own Christmas Traditions
It seems that somewhere along the way, the holiday message has been lost and replaced by materialistic attitudes that are of more concern than the joy surrounding the Christmas holiday. Christmas has now become a massive marketing event where companies can advertise their products as a must-have Christmas gift. Isn’t it funny how all the newest and biggest stuff comes out at Christmas time so that the masses of children will demand it from their parents? It would be good to see the old traditions return and for Christmas to be celebrated for the right reasons; not as a commercial opportunity. Christmas Traditions are so important; we have many family traditions. Some of them have fallen aside over the years as the kids have grown up, but I hope they will continue with their own children. We used to always read “The Night Before Christmas” on Christmas Eve. We always decorated the tree together. We always watch the “Grinch” (I still do every year, even if I’m alone!). We always have grandma’s best-in-the-universe butter tarts, and we still buy the chocolate Advent calendars. I still try to drag my children to the mall to have a picture with Santa… maybe this year I will try to drag them all there together – wouldn’t that be fun?! We always have the stockings stuffed with little funny things, chocolates and just ‘stuff’, and it’s just not Christmas if we don’t have Christmas crackers! And everyone has to wear the funny hats at the dinner table. Having family traditions are so much fun! Here are some ideas to start your own, and I think I’m going to add these to my family traditions!
How about Pajamas on Christmas Eve
Many families have a fun tradition of opening one present on Christmas Eve, and that present is always the same — pajamas. The kids always know what it is, but it’s still fun to see what kind of jammies they’ll don on Christmas morning.
The day before Christmas, deliver cookies to those who have to work
Like firefighters, policemen or nurses at the hospital. It’s a small, simple way to cheer up their day when they would probably rather be with family than at work.
An Annual Ornament
Choose an ornament for each child, each year until they leave the home. See if you can have the ornament reflect something about the child’s personality, an accomplishment they achieved that year, or something else unique. Then, when they leave your home and start their own, let them take their box of ornaments with them.
Bake Cookies For Santa On Christmas Eve
What a wonderful family tradition and besides Santa needs milk and cookies – that’s a known fact. Basic Christmas Cookie Dough ½ Cup (or 1 stick) butter (or margarine) at room temperature ½ Cup brown sugar, lightly packed 2 Tbsp. sugar ½ tsp. baking powder 1 large egg 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 1/2 Cups all-purpose flour In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients except the flour. Beat with an electric mixer, scraping the sides of the bowl several times, until the mixture is light and fluffy. With mixer at a low speed, add the flour gradually, beating just until everything is well blended. Place the mixture on a baking sheet using a tablespoon measure and press down with a spoon to flatten a bit. Or roll our and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter. Bake at 350ºF for about 12 to 15 minutes, until golden.
Fresh Cinnamon Rolls For Christmas Morning
Easy to make overnight so you are not fussing in the morning with all the other excitement going on. 20 unbaked frozen dinner rolls 2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 Cup brown sugar ¾ Cup raisins ¼ Cup instant vanilla pudding mix 1/3 Cup butter, melted Lightly grease a 10-inch Bundt cake pan. Place frozen rolls into pan and sprinkle with brown sugar, pudding mix, ground cinnamon and raisins. Pour melted butter over rolls and cover with a clean, damp cloth and leave overnight at room temperature. In the morning, preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake rolls for 25 minutes, until golden brown. Turn rolls out onto a serving plate and serve warm. The most important part of family traditions are to keep them simple, keep them lighthearted, and keep them fun. Their purpose is family unity. Often these are the things children remember most; not the gifts. Children enjoy and value time with their family a lot more than materialistic presents. These can become traditions for all the family, and children will often carry these with them when they in turn have their own families in years to come.

There is truly something magical about Christmas – the most amazing events can happen. I would call this one a MIRACLE, or… a Christmas Miracle. You are standing up to your knees in the slime of a waterlogged trench. It is the evening of 24 December 1914 and you are on the dreaded Western Front. Stooped over, you wade across to the firing step and take over the watch. Having exchanged pleasantries, your bleary-eyed and mud-spattered colleague shuffles off towards his dug out. Despite the horrors and the hardships, your morale is high and you believe that in the New Year the nation’s army will march towards a glorious victory. But for now you stamp your feet in a vain attempt to keep warm. All is quiet when jovial voices call out from both friendly and enemy trenches. Then the men from both sides start singing carols and songs. Next come requests not to fire, and soon the unthinkable happens: you start to see the shadowy shapes of soldiers gathering together in no-man’s land laughing, joking and sharing gifts. Many have exchanged cigarettes, the lit ends of which burn brightly in the inky darkness. Plucking up your courage, you haul yourself up and out of the trench and walk towards the foe... The meeting of enemies as friends in no-man’s land was experienced by hundreds, if not thousands, of men on the Western Front during Christmas 1914. Today, 90 years after it occurred, the event is seen as a shining episode of sanity from among the bloody chapters of World War One - a spontaneous effort by the lower ranks to create a peace that could have blossomed were it not for the interference of generals and politicians. Christmas day began quietly but once the sun was up the fraternisation began. Again songs were sung and rations thrown to one another. It was not long before troops and officers started to take matters into their own hands and ventured forth. No-man’s land became something of a playground. Men exchanged gifts and buttons. In one or two places soldiers who had been barbers in civilian times gave free haircuts. One German, a juggler and a showman, gave an impromptu, and given the circumstances, somewhat surreal performance of his routine in the centre of no-man’s land. Captain Sir Edward Hulse of the Scots Guards, in his famous Kurt Zehmisch of the 134th Saxons recorded in his diary: ‘The English brought a soccer ball from the trenches, and pretty soon a lively game ensued. How marvellously wonderful, yet how strange it was. The English officers felt the same way about it. Thus Christmas, the celebration of Love, managed to bring mortal enemies together as friends for a time.’ The Truce lasted all day; in places it ended that night, but on other sections of the line it held over Boxing Day and in some areas, a few days more. In fact, there parts on the front where the absence of aggressive behaviour was conspicuous well into 1915. Captain J C Dunn, the Medical Officer in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, whose unit had fraternised and received two barrels of beer from the Saxon troops opposite, recorded how hostilities re-started on his section of the front. Dunn wrote: ‘At 8.30 I fired three shots in the air and put up a flag with “Merry Christmas” on it, and I climbed on the parapet. He [the Germans] put up a sheet with “Thank you” on it, and the German Captain appeared on the parapet. We both bowed and saluted and got down into our respective trenches, and he fired two shots in the air, and the War was on again.’ In the public’s mind the facts have become irrevocably mythologized, and perhaps this is the most important legacy of the Christmas Truce today. In our age of uncertainty, it comforting to believe, regardless of the real reasoning and motives, that soldiers and officers told to hate, loathe and kill, could still lower their guns and extend the hand of goodwill, peace, love and Christmas cheer. Santa’s Wish
A man was walking along one day and found a Jack-in-the-Box lying in the street. He looked around and didn’t see anyone who might have dropped it, so he decided to turn the handle and open the Jack-in-the-Box. All of a sudden, Santa appeared and thanked the man for letting him out of the box. Santa said, “I am so grateful to get out of that crazy Jack-in-the-Box, that I will grant you a wish. BUT, I can only grant one at this time of year. I have SO many wishes to grant.� The man thought for a while and finally said, “I have always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I’ve never been able to go because I cannot stand flying in an airplane, and boats tend to make me claustrophobic. So for my wish, I want a road to be built to Hawaii.� Santa thought about the road for a few minutes and finally said, “No, I don’t think I can do that. Just think of all the work involved. Consider all the piling needed to hold up a highway and how deep they would have to go to reach the bottom of the ocean. Just imagine all of the pavement needed. No, I’m sorry, but that is just too much to ask.� The man thought for a few minutes and then decided on his second choice. The man said, “There IS one other thing I have always wanted. I would like to be able to understand women. What makes them laugh and cry, why they are temperamental, and why they can be so difficult to get along with. Basically, I’d like to know what makes them tick.� Santa pondered the request for a moment, and finally said, “So, do you want two lanes or four?�

MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF I love the Christmas Season! All the pretty lights on the eaves of my neighbour’s homes, and that safe warm feeling you get when it is cold and dark outside and you are all snuggled on the couch, sipping a sifter of Grand Marnier and enjoying the glow of the Christmas Tree. Now, if I was not enjoying my favourite Christmas treat of Grand Marnier I would be sipping on a mug of Mulled wine. The aroma is half the pleasure, like a fresh-cut spruce or mom’s holiday baking. Making mulled wine is something of an art in Europe during the holidays. Each culture has its own variant, though the basic principle is the same and the most common ingredients include cloves, cinnamon, star anise and citrus (though berries are often used as a garnish). Spicy-sweet mulled wine, or gluhwein, is a staple at German Christmas markets. Translating literally to “glow wine,” it’ll warm you right down to the tips of your toes. Mulled wine is reasonably easy to make and with the weather turning colder, a toasty cup of mulled wine can be perfect to take the edge off a cool winter’s evening or to offer guests throughout the holidays - and what a great alternative to traditional coffees, ciders and teas! To make mulled wine, select a dry red wine, such as a Burgundy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel or Merlot. Because you’ll be adding spices, fruit and sweetener, as well as other ingredients, there’s really no need to choose an expensive wine. For each bottle of red wine, gather 3 to 4 cinnamon sticks, 30 cloves, 20 allspice berries, 3 cardamom pods and 1 tsp of orange peel or mixed peel (which can often be found in the baking section of your local supermarket). Combine these ingredients into a sachet. Use a 6-inch square of cheesecloth or muslin, or try an empty teabag. Tie the sachet with plain cotton thread. To prepare the mulled wine, combine the spice sachet, 3 tbsp of sugar and the 750 ml bottle of red wine in a saucepan. You can also slice an orange into the saucepan as well. Do not boil, but warm slowly and let it steam for about 25 – 45 minutes. Ladle into mugs and serve hot. You can also garnish it with an orange slice if you’d like. To give it a bit of kick, add some brandy. For an extra special touch, rim the glass or mug with raw sugar. If you’re serving mulled wine to guests, why not send them home with a treat? Make extra spice sachets, and tie them with a festive ribbon. You truly can use your imagination and create your own mulled wine and if you’re not a red wine lover, you can use white. Open your cupboard and get creative - vanilla beans, star anise, ginger, lemongrass, brandy, Grand Marnier (or any liqueur for that matter), raisins, oranges, lemons, cardamom and nuts. Pets and Christmas With the holiday season fast approaching, there are many potential hazards associated with Christmas time for your pets! Food items that can be hazardous to your pet’s health include: o Mouldy foods cause muscle tremors or convulsions o Onions cause anemia o Macadamia nuts cause weakness, depression, vomiting and a drunken gait o Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure o Xylitol, a sugar substitute, causes dangerously low blood sugar and higher doses cause sudden liver failure with an inability to clot blood o Rising bread dough cause drunken behaviour (the yeast produce ethanol) and foreign body obstruction (the dough continues to rise because of the animal’s body temperature) o Chocolate causes hyperactivity, increased heart rate, tremors and death (the darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is to dogs) Other holiday-related items which can be dangerous: o Tinsel, ribbons and string are fun for cats to play with but if they are eaten, they can cause the intestine to bunch up like an accordion, necessitating surgery to remove the offending foreign body o Electric cords for cats, dogs or puppies who like to chew, can receive nasty electric burns to their mouths and electric shock can cause the lungs to fill with fluid, which requires emergency attention from a veterinarian o Poinsettias are not poisonous but contain salts which cause irritation to the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, which can result in vomiting o Mistletoe – several varieties cause a range of symptoms from stomach upset to liver failure, so keep your mistletoe hanging well away from pets (and children!) Make sure you keep your pets out of the kitchen as accidental spills can result in nasty burns! And remember, new and rich foods given as treats over Christmas can cause stomach upsets in pets, the most severe of which can result in pancreatitis, which requires hospitalization and intensive treatment. EXTREME COLD WEATHER DANGERS FOR ANIMALS: Most pet owners are responsible during extreme cold weather; however, sometimes a person does not realize just how dangerous it can be for an animal left outside in the winter without proper shelter. COLD WEATHER GUIDELINES DOGS: 1) If you have an outdoor dog, provide it with an insulated doghouse with straw bedding; NOT a blanket. Blankets absorb moisture that will cause the blanket to freeze. 2) Elderly animals, young puppies, small-breed dogs, and dogs with short hair should never be left outside for extended periods of time during cold or wet weather. It may be necessary to paper-train puppies inside during cold temperatures. 3) Dogs should never be allowed off-leash on snow or ice, as this can increase their chance of becoming lost and suffering from hypothermia or frostbite. 4) Outdoor dogs require energy for warmth and should be fed an increased supply of food with plenty of protein. Provide fresh water in a non-metal dish, as a dog’s tongue can easily freeze to the metal. Snow is not a satisfactory substitute for water. CATS: Cats’ bodies are not designed for low temperatures - keep your cat inside. BOTH DOGS & CATS: 1) Never leave pets alone in a vehicle during cold weather. A vehicle can act as a refrigerator in the winter by holding in the cold. The companion animal can then freeze to death. If the car is left running, pets could die from breathing in carbon monoxide. Also, pets can be stolen from unattended vehicles. If our Animal Protection Officers are called to investigate and find that an animal is in distress without proper shelter, food, or water – an animal can be seized and charges laid against the owner under the Animal Protection Act of Alberta. Parent Link Centres are Provincially funded to support parents and caregivers by providing early childhood development programs and services that are uniquely designed to meet the unique needs of children and families in Alberta communities. Each centre offers parent education programs, programs for young children to learn and play, information and referrals, family support services (such as lending libraries, resource exchanges, family counseling, etc.) and developmental screening to support optimal child development. As their children’s first teachers, care-giving parents and families play a key role in providing children with the skills, tools and confidence they need to fulfill their potential, succeed at learning and grow into healthy, productive adults. This is the first in a series of articles for parents of pre-school children. Future articles will provide specific information on parenting matters such as what to expect from children at different ages. Initially, though, we are providing background information about Parent Link services available to pre-school children and their families. Kidz 1st Network Parent Link Centre is a provincially funded service developed to serve families in South East Rocky View and Wheatland County including Carseland, Chestermere, Cheadle, Cluny, Delacour, Dalum, Gleichen, Hussar, Indus, Langdon, Lyalta, Nightingale, Rockyford, Rosebud, Standard, Strathmore and surrounding rural areas. THE CHALLENGE - Research over the past decade has shown that parenting has a powerful impact on children’s learning and behaviour. It has also shown that parents need support and comprehensive, community-based parent resource programs can have positive, longterm effects on child development. Alberta Children’s Services conducted a province-wide survey of community programs, collecting data about the structure of Alberta’s family resource centres, the range and availability of the services they offer, and the demographic profile of users of these services. Survey results identified three key issues facing parent resource centres in the province: • Fewer than 10% of respondents were providing comprehensive services for children and parents. • Services were not always available to parents at convenient times. • Centres operated in relative isolation and with different standards of excellence. RESPONSE - Alberta Children’s Services responded to this challenge by establishing the Parent Link program. Parent Link Centres are community planned and community based. They are centres of excellence that provide parents, caregivers and families with comprehensive support in five core services: • Parent education. • Early childhood development and care. • Family support. • Information and referrals. • Developmental screening PURPOSE - The purpose of the Parent Link program is to: • Support Alberta’s parents in their role as their children’s first and most influential teachers. • Link Alberta’s parenting programs and services through a province-wide network that. • Promotes excellence. • Facilitates the sharing of resources, knowledge and best practices. • Fosters the creation of partnerships. • Encourages cooperation on projects of value to the network as a whole, as well as to individual members EXPECTED RESULTS • Parents are connected with programs, tools and resources that can help them raise strong, healthy, well adjusted children. • Parents have improved parenting skills and confidence in providing a nurturing environment for child development. • Quality parent-child relationships develop through the parents’ ability to read developmental cues and their understanding of children’s behaviour. • Children with special needs are identified and referred to appropriate services at an early age. • Children develop a readiness to learn. MANDATE - Parent Link centres provide high-quality, comprehensive, accessible, community-based programs that comply with provincewide standards of excellence and respond to the changing needs of parents and families. In fulfilling this mandate, the centres • Promote family wellness. • Promote positive parent-child relationships • Improve parenting knowledge and skills. • Foster optimal child development. • Ensure that children get a healthy start in life. FUNDING - Funded by Alberta Children’s Services, a network of 56 Parent Link centres with well over 200 satellite or outreach locations have been established in the province. Letter to Santa from Mom
Dear Santa, I’ve been a good mom all year. I’ve fed, cleaned and cuddled my two children on demand, visited the doctor’s office more than my doctor, sold sixty-two cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground and figured out how to attach nine patches onto my daughter’s girl scout sash with staples and a glue gun. I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my son’s red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when I’ll find any more free time in the next 18 years. Here are my Christmas wishes: I’d like a pair of legs that don’t ache after a day of chasing kids (in any colour, except purple, which I already have) and arms that don’t flap in the breeze but are strong enough to carry a screaming toddler out of the candy aisle in the grocery store. I’d also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy. If you’re hauling big ticket items this year I’d like a car with fingerprint-resistant windows and a radio that only plays adult music, a television that doesn’t broadcast any programs containing talking animals, and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone. On the practical side, I could use a talking daughter doll that says, “Yes, Mommy” to boost my parental confidence, along with one potty-trained toddler, two kids who don’t fight and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools. I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting, “Don’t eat in the living room” and ‘Take your hands off your brother,’ because my voice seems to be just out of my children’s hearing range and can only be heard by the dog. And please don’t forget the Playdoh Travel Pack, the hottest stocking stuffer this year for mothers of preschoolers. It comes in three fluorescent colours and is guaranteed to crumble on any carpet, making the in-laws’ house seem just like mine. If it’s too late to find any of these products, I’d settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning, or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container. If you don’t mind, I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season. Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely. It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family, or if my toddler didn’t look so cute sneaking downstairs to eat contraband ice cream in his pyjamas at midnight. Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think he wants his crayon back. Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the chimney and come in and dry off by the fire so you don’t catch a cold. Help yourself to cookies on the table but don’t eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet. Yours Always... Mom.

The Christmas Trousers Roy Collette and his brother-in-law have been exchanging the same pair of pants as a Christmas present for 11 years, and each time the package gets harder to open. This year, the pants came wrapped in a car mashed into a 3-foot cube. The trousers are in the glove compartment of a 1974 Gremlin. Now Collette’s plotting his revenge - if he can get them out. It all started when Collette received a pair of moleskin trousers from his brother-in-law, Larry Kunkel of Bensenville, Ill. Kunkel’s mother had given her son the britches when he was a college student. He wore them a few times, but they froze stiff in cold weather and he didn’t like them. So he gave them to Collette. Collette, who called the moleskins “miserable”, wore them three times, then wrapped them up and gave them back to Kunkel for Christmas the next year. The friendly exchange continued routinely until Collette twisted the pants tightly, stuffed them into a 3-foot-long, 1-inch wide tube and gave them back to Kunkel. The next Christmas, Kunkel compressed the pants into a 7-inch square, wrapped them with wire and gave the “bale” to Collette. Not to be outdone, the next year Collette put the pants into a 2-foot-square crate filled with stones, nailed it shut, banded it with steel and gave the trusty trousers back to Kunkel. The inlaws agreed to end the caper if the trousers were damaged. But they were as careful as they were clever. Kunkel had the pants mounted inside an insulated window that had a 20-year guarantee and shipped them off to Collette. Collette broke the glass, recovered the trousers, stuffed them into a 5-inch coffee can and soldered it shut. The can was put in a 5-gallon container filled with concrete and reinforcing rods and given to Kunkel the following Christmas. Two years ago, Kunkel installed the pants in a 225-pound homemade steel ashtray made from 8-inch steel casings and etched Collette’s name on the side. Collette had trouble retrieving the treasured trousers, but succeeded without burning them with a cutting torch. Last Christmas, Collette found a 600-pound safe and hauled it to Viracon Inc. in Owatonna, where the shipping department decorated it with red and green stripes, put the pants inside and welded the safe shut. The safe was then shipped to Kunkel, who is the plant manager for Viracon’s outlet in Bensenville. A few weeks ago, the pants were trucked to Owatonna, 55 miles south of Minneapolis, in a drab green, 3-foot cube that once was a car with 95,000 miles on it. A note attached to the 2,000-pound scrunched car advised Collette that the pants were inside the glove compartment. “This will take some planning,” Collette said. “I will definitely get them out. I’m confident.” But he’s waiting until January to think about how to recover the bothersome britches. Page 32

Havin a party! A man named Sam had been in the newspaper business for 25 years when he finally became sick of the stress. So he quits his job and bought 50 acres of land in Vermont, as far from humanity as possible. Sam sees the postman once a week and gets groceries once a month. Otherwise it’s total peace and quiet. After six months or so of almost total isolation, he’s finishing dinner when someone knocks on his door. He opens it and there is a big, bearded Vermonter standing there. “Name’s Enoch. Your neighbour from four miles over the ridge. Having a party Saturday. Thought you’d like to come.” “Great,” says Sam, “after six months of this I’m ready to meet some local folks. Thanks for inviting me!” As Enoch is leaving, he stops, “Gotta warn you though, there’s gonna be some drinkin’.” “Not a problem. After 25 years in the newspaper business, I can drink with the best of ‘em.” Again, as he starts to leave, Enoch stops. “More ‘n’ likely gonna be some fightin’ too.” Tough crowd, Sam thinks to himself. “Well, I get along with people. Don’t worry, I’ll be there. Thanks again!” Once again Enoch turns from the door. “I’ve seen some strange things happen at these parties, too.” “Now that’s not a problem,” says Sam. “Remember, I’ve been alone for six months, I’m ready for something new! I’ll definitely be there. By the way, what should I wear?” Enoch stops in the door one last time and says, “Whatever you want, just gonna be the two of us.” Page 34

BODY PARTS & DISEASE - Your Lungs & Cancer This is a very scary place for me to go as I have been a smoker for a number of years and have always known I should not be. It’s funny because I was talking to my neighbour the other day who is also a smoker; we were talking about why, after seeing friends and relatives (my cousin just died of lung cancer), why on earth can’t we quit?! Lung cancer is the deadliest type of cancer for both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. Lung cancer is more common in older adults. It is rare in people under age 45. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. The more cigarettes you smoke per day and the earlier you started smoking, the greater your risk for lung cancer. However, lung cancer has occurred in people who have never smoked. Second-hand smoke (breathing the smoke of others) increases your risk for lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 3,000 non-smoking adults will die each year from lung cancer related to breathing second-hand smoke. Smoking is not the only cause. Asbestos, exposure to cancer-causing chemicals such as uranium, beryllium, vinyl chloride, nickel chromates, coal products, mustard gas, chloromethyl ethers, gasoline, diesel exhaust, a family history of lung cancer, high levels of air pollution, high levels of arsenic in drinking water, radiation therapy to the lungs and Radon gas are other causes. The thing is, early lung cancer may not cause any symptoms and the symptoms depend on the type of cancer you have, but may include: chest pain, a cough that does not go away, coughing up blood, fatigue, losing weight without trying, loss of appetite, shortness of breath and wheezing. Now this is getting scary! Other symptoms that may also occur with lung cancer, often in the late stages are bone pain or tenderness, eyelid drooping, facial paralysis, hoarseness or changing voice, joint pain, nail problems, shoulder pain, swallowing difficulty, swelling of face or arms and weakness. This information comes from The Canadian Lung Association. Most people find it hard to quit smoking. Quitting can be hard, but it’s not impossible. You can do it! Counselling, medications, and other supports can help you quit. If you’ve tried quitting smoking before but couldn’t do it, try again. Each time you try, it will get easier. You will be one step closer to quitting for good. Now is the best time to quit. It’s never too late. How should I quit smoking? 1. Pick a quit day. Choose a date within the next two weeks to quit. Don’t wait for the “perfect” day – just pick a date and work with it. Put it in your calendar. If you’d like: List your reasons for quitting - health, family, money. Write down some new hobbies you can do instead of smoking – exercise, knitting, making model airplanes; something to keep your hands and mind busy. Speak with friends, family, and colleagues and ask for support. Tell them about your plan to quit, so it feels more real to you. Start making the changes to push smoking out of your everyday life stop smoking in the house and in the car. Make your house and car smoke-free, so no one is allowed to smoke inside. 2. Choose two or more proven quit-smoking methods. There are many proven ways to quit smoking. To boost your chances of quitting, choose more than one method. Pick what seems right for you. Each person is different. You’ll know what will work best for you. Proven quit-smoking methods: Join a support group for people trying to quit. ing support groups are more likely to quit for good. Get individual counselling in person or by phone. You can get counselling in person or over the phone, through a free smoker’s quit line. Both are proven to help people quit. There are free quit lines across Canada – find out about one in your area. If you prefer to see someone in person, ask your doctor or quit line staff to recommend a counsellor. The cost of counselling may be covered by your workplace or extended health plan, if you have one. Take nicotine replacement therapy. The nicotine patch, gum, lozenge or inhaler replaces some of the nicotine you usually get from cigarettes. This can make nicotine withdrawal easier to manage. Ask your doctor about a prescription medicine called bupropion. It’s an antidepressant that can make it easier to quit. Ask your doctor about a prescription medicine called varenicline tartrate. It can take away some of your craving to smoke, and make smoking less enjoyable. If you slip up, don’t give up. Try, try, again... keep trying until you’ve quit for good! Ask for support from your family and friends. Going “cold turkey” – quitting spontaneously, on your own – also works well for some people. Some people just decide to quit smoking one day - maybe it’s the day they find out they have a lung disease, or the day their grandchild is born. Maybe there is something else that motivates them. Many people who have quit smoking for good say they quit “cold turkey”. If you think going cold turkey could work for you, try it. 3. On your quit date, butt out completely. Don’t smoke, not even a little. Toss out your cigarettes, other tobacco, and ashtrays. Avoid people and situations where you will be tempted to smoke. If you usually smoke in a certain chair, don’t sit in that chair. If you usually smoke at a nightclub, avoid that nightclub for a while. Change your usual routine, so your new routine doesn’t include smoking. Go for a walk instead of a smoke. Be positive. Believe in yourself and your plan. Remember that nicotine withdrawal symptoms only last a short time. Take it one day at a time. Remind yourself that once the withdrawal is over, you’ll feel better than you have in years. You deserve to feel better… you’re almost there! Celebrate your success and give yourself credit! Tell people how long ago you quit. It’s a major achievement and you should be proud. If you’d like, tell us how long you’ve quit. We’d love to hear from you and celebrate your success! Consider exercising more. When you’re quitting smoking, exercise can help. Exercise is a healthy alternative to smoking; it can take your mind off your cravings, it can help your mood and energy level, and it can help keep off extra weight. If you are new to exercising, start slowly. A walk around the block is a good start. 4. If you slip up, don’t give up. Try quitting again. Quitting smoking gets easier with practice. Every time you try to quit, you boost your chances of quitting for good. Most people who’ve quit smoking forever had to try 5 or 6 times before they could quit for good. This is normal. Don’t be discouraged if you slip up. You are not a failure. Try to figure out what the barriers were to your quitting. Were the nicotine cravings too strong? Did you go back to smoking when you were stressed? Talk with your counsellor, doctor or pharmacist about your experience. Ask yourself how you can do it differently next time. If you think quit smoking medicines will make it easier for you to quit next time, ask your doctor or pharmacist for their recommendation. Then try quitting again. I am a Kiwi
Good day to you! My name is Keekee Kiwi and I am from New Zealand, but my great ancestors were from China. We have been called many names over the centuries and way, way back we were called Yang Tao! Then, when we traveled to New Zealand by Chinese missionaries in the early 20th century, they changed our name to Chinese Gooseberries. In 1961, we made our first appearance at a restaurant in the United States and we were “discovered” by an American produce distributor who thought we were truly exotic and she started importing us! We became so popular but she really didn’t like our name so we became known as Kiwifruit, in honour of the native bird of New Zealand, the kiwi, because our skin is kind of like the brown fuzzy coat of the bird. The rest is history, and we have become even more popular because of an appreciation for our taste, nutritional value, unique appearance and, surprisingly, our new name. Now Italy, New Zealand, France, Japan and the United States are the leading commercial producers of all my cousins. Now, we are far more than just an exotic tropical flair in your fruit salad. My pretty emerald insides contain numerous phytonutrients as well as wellknown vitamins and minerals that promote your health. In the world of phytonutrient research, we have fascinated researchers for our ability to protect DNA in the nucleus of human cells from oxygenrelated damage. We have lots of vitamin C and beta-carotene content and a variety of flavonoids and carotenoids that have demonstrated antioxidant activity. We love children and we have been shown to help them with respiratory-related health problems including wheezing, shortness of breath, or night coughing. Vitamin C is the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body, neutralizing free radicals that can cause damage to cells and lead to problems such as inflammation and cancer. In fact, adequate intake of vitamin C has been shown to be helpful in reducing the severity of conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma, and for preventing conditions such as colon cancer, atherosclerosis, and diabetic heart disease. And since vitamin C is necessary for the healthy function of the immune system, it may be useful for preventing recurrent ear infections in people who suffer from them. If you eat us a couple times a week, we can help reduced risk of death from all causes including heart disease, stroke and cancer. We have the important fat-soluble antioxidant, vitamin E, with the combination of both fat- and water-soluble antioxidants that makes us able to provide free radical protection on all fronts. Now, did you know we are a very good source of dietary fibre, which is useful for a number of conditions. Researchers have found that diets that contain plenty of fibre can reduce high cholesterol levels, which may reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attack. Fibre is also good for binding and removing toxins from the colon, which is helpful for preventing colon cancer, and we are good for keeping the blood sugar levels of diabetic patients under control. We also have minerals like potassium, magnesium, copper and phosphorus. We are full of lots of little surprises inside our small, oval-shaped, brown fuzzy skin! For instance, we have a brilliant, semi-translucent emerald green flesh, speckled with a few concentrically-arranged white veins and small black seeds. We are all creamy with an invigorating taste, reminiscent of a mixture of strawberries and bananas, yet we have our own unique sweet flavour. Fresh Fruit Trifle 1, 12 oz. Container of frozen whipped topping, thawed 1, 8 oz. Container of sour cream 3 kiwis, peeled and sliced 1, 9 inch angel food cake 3 bananas, peeled and sliced 1, 3.4 oz. Pkg. Instant vanilla pudding mix 1, 15 oz. Can crushed pineapple 1 pint fresh strawberries, slice 1 sprig fresh mint In a medium bowl, fold sour cream and unprepared pudding mix into the whipped topping. Cut the cake into thirds horizontally. Line a large trifle or other glass-serving bowl with kiwi and strawberry slices, reserving two whole strawberries and two kiwi slices. Place one layer of cake in bottom of bowl, top with 1/3 of bananas and drained pineapple, and 1.3 of whipped topping mixture. Repeat layering until all ingredients are used. Make fan garnishes of whole strawberries by slicing from just below the stem. Garnish with strawberries, kiwi and mint. Refrigerate until served.
Kiwi Fruit Muffins 3/4 Cup white flour 1/2 Cup whole wheat flour 1/2 Cup cornmeal 3 tsp. baking powder 1/2 Cup sugar 1/2 Cup vegetable oil 2 eggs 1/2 Cup milk
1/2 cup kiwifruit, peeled and chopped Preheat oven to 400 F. Line muffin tins with paper liners or grease tins. In a medium bowl, whisk together white flour, whole wheat flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and sugar until combined. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat together oil, eggs, and milk. Stir in kiwifruit by hand. Add dry ingredients to kiwifruit mixture, stirring by hand until just combined. Spoon into muffin tins, filling 3/4 full. Bake 15 to 20 minutes until done
Chicken Breast with Kiwi Fruit 4 Cups chicken broth 1-3/4 pounds whole chicken breasts 1 stalk celery, chopped 1 leek, white part only, chopped 4 kiwifruit, peeled and cut in 1/4-inch slices 1 orange, washed and dried 1 lemon 1 Tbsp butter 1 Tbsp sugar 1/8 tsp salt 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper Bring chicken broth to a boil in large saucepan. Add chicken and simmer 10 minutes, skimming off any scum that rises to the top. Add celery and leek and simmer an additional 10 minutes. Remove chicken from broth and keep warm. (Broth may be strained and reserved for other uses.) Arrange kiwifruit in a fan-shaped pattern on a serving dish. Zest the rind of half of the orange with a microplane. Sprinkle zest over kiwifruit. Juice the orange and lemon into a small bowl. Heat butter in a small saucepan and add sugar. Stir until sugar is melted and begins to carmelize (turns dark), about 5 minutes. Add orange and lemon juices, stirring until incorporated. Boil until the sauce is reduced to about 2 tablespoons. Stir in salt and cayenne pepper. Remove chicken breast from the bones, discarding skin, and slice into thin strips. Place chicken strips on top of kiwifruit and top with sauce to serve.
Kiwi Cheesecake – Yummy Filling: 2 packages (each 8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 2 Cups ricotta cheese, drained 1 Cup sour cream 1-1/2 Cups granulated 5 eggs 3 medium kiwis, peeled and pureed 1/2 Cup all-purpose flour 2 Tbsp.fresh lime juice 1 Tbsp.vanilla . Decoration: 3 medium kiwis, peeled and sliced thin 1/2 Cup apricot preserves
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F./180 degrees C. Prepare pan: 9-inch cheesecake or springform pan with 3-inch sides, lined with parchement paper. Filling: In a large mixer bowl, beat cream cheese, ricotta, sour cream, and sugar on medium-high speed for 3 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Stir in kiwi puree, flour, lime juice, and vanilla. Pour into prepared cheesecake pan. Bake in preheated oven for 55 to 65 minutes or until the top is light brown and the center has a slight jiggle to it. Cool on a rack for 2 hours. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 6 hours before decorating. Decoration: Place sliced kiwis on top of cheesecake. In a small saucepan, bring apricot preserves to medium heat. Press through a sieve. Brush on top of kiwis. This will keep the fruit looking fresh. Tips: To drain ricotta, place a fine mesh strainer over a bowl, place the cheese in the strainer and let stand for at least 1 hour or overnight in the refrigerator. When purchasing fresh kiwis, they should be firm like a ripe tomato. Use fresh lime juice. Bottled lime juice can have a metallic taste.

CHRISTMAS AT THE FARM “Mommy!” his little voice shouts in delight, “I’ve been working so hard from morning till night. Because I’m making something pretty for you, Nana gave me paint and markers, paper and glue. I have glitter and buttons and this colourful feather, I’ll use some red string to tie everything together. We have snowflakes to decorate, Popcorn to eat as we celebrate, Christmas this year will be really great, Oh Mommy, I can hardly wait! Our excitement is growing, The Christmas tree is glowing. Look out the window, Hurray! It’s snowing! Papa, let’s get out the sleigh, And decorate it with lights. Soon the family will arrive, To ride and sing on this Christmas Eve night. LUSCIOUS JOYS Don’t you just love receiving homemade Christmas gifts?! I sure do! They are way, way better than anything else you could receive. It just makes you feel so special that your friends or family have taken the time to make you something really special - to give you a little bit of their heart. Instead of going to the mall to try to find that something special for your family this year, try something new! The gifts can be given individually, or develop a theme and group them in a large basket, wrapped with cellophane and ribbons. If you’re giving cookies, for instance, tie a big bow on a beautiful basket and include several kinds of cookies along with some cookie cutters, a few recipes, and a cookie mix in a jar. Gifts of homemade liqueur would be great in a beautiful wooden box with a few pretty glasses, a shot glass for measuring, and some homemade snack mixes. Wrap up a few quick breads along with some beverage mixes, a few mugs, and a cutting board! How about giving a crock-pot, filled with soup mixes and lots of different recipes? Find decorative jars at the dollar store (make sure they are food-safe!). Purchase some holiday recipe cards for the recipes. There are many recipes available, from salad dressings, puddings, soups, sauces, gravy’s and dips. So grab a pen and some notepaper (or… start a new Word document!) and start making your list of friends and family who would love to receive a gift of mixes from your kitchen and your heart!
White Chocolate Mix This makes a fabulous and inexpensive gift to give, along with some pretty mugs, stirring spoons, and napkins in a pretty gift basket. 2 cups grated white chocolate 1 (3-ounce) package white chocolate pudding mix 2 tsp. vanilla powder 1-2 tsp. dried orange peel, finely ground, if desired In a small bowl, combine all ingredients. Store in an airtight container in a cool dark place.
To make White Hot Chocolate for Two: 1-1/2 cups milk 1/4 cup White Hot Chocolate Mix In a small saucepan, heat the milk until bubbles form around edges. Add the White Hot Chocolate Mix and whisk until the chocolate is melted and beverage is blended.
Thousand Island Salad Dressing 1/2 cup dried parsley flakes 1/4 cup finely crushed saltine crackers 1/4 cup dried minced onion 3 tbsp. garlic salt 3 tbsp. onion salt 1 tbsp. garlic powder 1 tbsp. dried dill weed 1/8 tsp. white pepper In a medium mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well. Store in airtight container in a cool, dry place. Makes enough Thousand Island Salad Dressing Mix to make 12 batches of salad dressing. This recipe is perfect for people who love Thousand Island Dressing, but are allergic to MSG – like me. Most of the salad dressings you buy in the stores have MSG. To make Thousand Island Dressing, combine 1 tablespoon of Thousand Island Salad Dressing Mix with 1 cup mayonnaise, 1 cup buttermilk, 1/2 cup chili sauce and 1/4 cup pickle relish and blend well. Butterscotch Pudding Mix Butterscotch Pudding Mix is a delicious and easy way to make pudding from scratch. 1-1/2 cups brown sugar 1/3 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder 1 cup cornstarch 1/2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. vanilla powder Combine all ingredients and store in container with tight-fitting lid. Makes 3 cups mix, yielding 24 servings of prepared pudding. Stir mix well. For two servings, combine 1/4 cup Butterscotch Pudding Mix, 2 tbsp. butter, and 1 cup milk in a small saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture boils. Boil gently, stirring constantly, for one minute. Pour into serving dishes and chill until thickened.
Surprise Cookie Mix These cookies are really fabulous; and with this mix, they’re super easy to make as well! 2-1/2 cups flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. salt 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 packages chocolate mint wafer candies (Andes candies) In large bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar and mix well. Pour into the bottom of a screw top glass jar. Place brown sugar into a small bag and place on top of the flour mixture. Unwrap the mints and place in another small bag; place on top of the brown sugar. Screw jar closed and include this recipe: 1 cup butter, softened 2 eggs 1 tsp.vanilla 1 jar cookie mix In large bowl, combine butter and brown sugar from cookie mix and beat until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla and mix until blended. Stir in remaining dry ingredients from cookie mix until blended. Cover and chill dough for 2 hours. Preheat oven to 375°F. Shape about two teaspoons of dough around each chocolate mint wafer, making sure to cover the candy completely. Bake on ungreased cookie sheets at 375°F for 9-12 minutes until light golden brown. Let stand for 1 minute, then remove from cookie sheets and let cool on wire racks. Glaze with melted chocolate if desired, or top with nuts before baking. Makes 4 dozen cookies.
Onion Soup Mix Make your own onion soup mix to use for soups or dips. 3/4 cup instant minced onion 1/3 cup beef flavoured instant bouillon 4 tsp. onion powder 1/4 tsp. celery salt 1/4 tsp. sugar 1/8 tsp. white pepper Mix all ingredients together well, and store up to 6 months in cool, dry place. Stir before each use. Five tablespoons of the mix equals 1.25-oz. pkg. of purchased dry onion soup mix.

Sometimes, if you look at life as a series of lessons or mini experiments, it helps you get through those times when nothing seems to go right. Some are big lessons, some smaller. Sometimes we get the largest lessons from seemingly insignificant situations or bumps in the road. When you do something and it doesn’t give you the result that you were expecting, just look at it this way: you just learned how not to do something. You never have to relive that situation because you tried that experiment with those particular variables and it didn’t give you the result you wanted… so, next time you can try a different technique with new variables. If you look at it that way, you are able to de-personalize the situation and not blame yourself or the circumstances or anyone else for that matter, but instead look at the result as feedback. The key is to remember what you did to get that undesirable feedback and then move forward and trying something new so you get a more favourable result. Odds are, if you keep getting the same undesirable result, you are likely using the same technique and need to get creative. Take risks and try something new. An example might be when you constantly seem to be late for work. Not only might it be annoying to others and result in a poor work evaluation, but you also feel rushed and frustrated in the process. So you try getting up earlier, but that doesn’t work (first negative feedback), then you try setting your clock 5 minutes fast and that doesn’t work (second trial), so then you get even more creative and set the oven timer to make sure you can be alerted to get out the door leaving you enough time for a coffee run. If that works, you have just resolved that one issue and can move on to another experiment! So when you are in that space of being disappointed about something that’s happened in your life, look back and analyze what steps you specifically took to get yourself there. Make a mental note of those steps, because now you are going to avoid taking that same pattern of steps or you will find yourself with the same negative results. You can’t expect to get great results by using the same methods that messed things up time and time again in the past. Do you get the picture? It’s time to grab hold of your life and take a new direction by trying different strategies. Life is more in the planning than in relying on good luck to get you by.

I also lean toward local authors, when possible, as I think we have a wealth of artistic talent here in Alberta. What trees there were looked stunted or dead, their branches withered and their greenery gone, bearing silent witness to the cataclysm that had destroyed the old world centuries ago.—
Since I first discovered a copy of The Elfstones of Shannara at a convenience store a little over thirty years ago, Terry Brooks has been one of my go-to authors. His books are more than magic and swords; they are gripping adventures in every sense of the word. His characters are multi-dimensional and make the reader care about their destinies. The fact that Terry has been weaving stories of this calibre since the late 1970’s attests to his true pedigree as a writer. I’m not going to review Elfstones here; instead I’m going to look at one of his newest works. The book is Legends of Shannara: Bearers of the Black Staff, an offering in his Genesis of Shannara series. This set of books forms the connection between Brooks’s many Shannara novels and his Word and Void series. It bridges the gap between the former, a pseudo-medieval era of the four lands—populated by humans, elves, dwarves, trolls and a variety of other species— and the latter, a more contemporary society much like our own, which is on the verge of collapse owing to the machinations of demons who are bent on civilization’s destruction. Bearers of the Black Staff follows the survival of humanity in a world that operates under a mix of scientific technology and old-world magic. Humans, elves and other survivors came together hundreds of years ago, delivered from the wastelands of our world to live in a sheltered valley where magic protected them from both the savage creatures and the elements of the greater desolation. When the magical barrier fails and these surviving peoples are exposed to the blasted remnants of civilization, a quartet of the valley’s inhabitants must warn the people of their vulnerability to the inevitable contact with the outside. They must not only bear the news, but convince the communities’ leaderships to take action against the dire circumstances they face. A descendant of the Knights of the Word, two young human trackers and an elven princess form the group who must undertake this mission. Even though these several varied peoples have shared the valley for five centuries, they do not necessarily cooperate with each other and, over the years, have even developed mutual suspicion and mistrust. Factional infighting, prejudice and other challenges hinder the process of unification that is the only chance the surviving communities have to withstand the coming threat. Brooks has continued to show how the order of the Druids—protectors of the four lands throughout the Shannara stories—developed from the earlier Knights of the Word. In most of his works, these mysterious figures have guarded the knowledge of the past and used it to ward against successive forces of evil that arose to threaten the peoples of the four lands. He has also maintained the practice of using unwitting heroes to complete the quest. Not the strongest, boldest or most influential, Brooks’s heroes have always been more common in their makeup and face the challenge of self-realization and personal growth, whether born into higher status or not. Any fan of a great story, compelling characters and excellent writing should get hold of a Terry Brooks novel. Whether it’s Bearers of the Black Staff, the Elfstones of Shannara or any one of his thirty-odd bestselling books, I am confident you’ll be glad you did. Page 44

Your mascara wand can all too easily scratch your cornea and you run the risk of inattentive driving. (New Distracted Driving Law: if you do this, you could get a huge fine!) You may also want to avoid applying eye makeup on buses or C-trains, as sudden stops can also increase the risk that you will scratch your eye. • Do not use eye cosmetics if you have an irritated or infected eye. If you think that a particular cosmetic is irritating your eyes, stop using it right away. • It is a good idea to keep eye cosmetics outside of your eye. Please do not use eyeliner on the inner eyelids, as this may get makeup inside your eye and cause bacteria. • It is important to always wash your hands before you dig into your makeup bag and start applying eye cosmetics. • Caution: if you use iridescent, glittery, or shiny eye cosmetics, they could scratch or irritate the eye and you just may want to avoid them. • It is a good idea to wash or replace all brushes and sponges frequently and make sure that all eye cosmetic applicators are clean before you use them. Tip: A good rule for this is to wash all your brushes and sponges at least ONCE a week to help avoid the spread of bacteria. SAFETY AT BEDTIME IS IMPORTANT • Makeup can cause a lot of problems for your eyes. This can be especially true if you wear contact lenses. Cosmetics can leave deposits on your lenses, affecting your vision and the comfort of your lenses. It is very important to carefully and gently wash off your eye makeup each night before bed, to make sure that your cosmetics do not work their way into your eyes, build up, and cause potential damage. • You should always follow the instructions on the packaging of each eye cosmetic to find out the best way to remove it. An oilfree eye makeup remover is a good choice to remove mascara. Again, it is important to be gentle when you remove your eye cosmetics, as the eyes and skin surrounding them are very sensitive. Please take the same care using removal products as you do with eye makeup. ‘Tis the season for glitz and glamour! Thus, this year’s holiday makeup trends involve lots of glitter and a lovely sparkly lip! With all those Christmas and New Years Eve parties approaching, we must take this opportunity to look our very best! What is it about the holidays that make us rush to the mall to find that perfect cocktail dress and all the festive accessories and shoes to go with it? Let’s face it ladies; we spend money when it comes to these parties and there’s absolutely no shame in it! It’s that one time of the year and as much as I love the summer, there’s something so warm, rich, and comforting about the glamour of the holidays. Silver and gold, faux fur, sequins, evergreen, frost, and crimsons... all beautiful words that create imagery and inspiration for the season’s fashion and makeup trends. Since these parties are just one time a year, this is when you need to amp up your usual makeup routine. Do something different! Create some glamour and intensity! Have fun with it! The easiest way to do this is by looking at what colour palette you already have and increasing it! For example, if you typically wear a dark brown matte eye shadow, try getting the same shade with illuminating sparkles. If you would normally wear a light purple shadow, try a darker one like a plum! Or if you don’t wear eye shadow at all, try coloured eyeliner or better yet - a glitter liner for your lower lash line to give your eyes a subtle twinkle! This is the time of year where you can wear all those gorgeous deep greens, purples, and holiday colours. If you are not wanting dark colours, try a sweep of luxurious gold or silver across your lids and don’t be afraid to try some artificial lashes - there are many different shapes and sizes and they’re affordable and relatively easy to use, so don’t be intimidated. And don’t forget those lips! Between sipping wine all night, socializing, and your New Year’s Eve kiss, you’re going to want luscious lips that last through the night. First thing’s first: use lip primer. My favourite product is MAC’s Prep + Prime lip primer. Apply and let it set for about thirty seconds. Lip primers are a must-have, especially when you’re using a vibrant or deeper colour. A bold lip does make a statement and you don’t want your ‘statement’ to be smeared or rubbing off. This season’s trend is the sparkly lip, which can be achieved by taking loose glitter and pressing it into a lipstick or gloss; it gives such a beautiful creamy shimmer that looks amazing! Remember, the key to creating the glitzy look without appearing as a disco ball is to choose just one facial feature to add the sparkle to. So be a diva for the evening and rock that holiday glamour like nobody else! After all, you never know who will be waiting under the mistletoe! Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year’s!

Plants are wonderful gifts at Christmas, your friends can enjoy them the whole year and each time they look at it they will remember you. These three are especially great gifts - Poinsettia, Norfolk Island Pine, and Christmas Cactus. Here is a little information and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Poinsettia ~ These plants do not like to be moved. They also do not like cool temperatures. The leaves tend to curl up and fall off when they are unhappy. Poinsettias want a warm, bright place to live. It is difficult to get this plant to flower a second time. They are usually treated as a seasonal plant, discarded after the season. The milky sap can irritate the skin and mucus membranes. Poinsettias are native to Mexico. The large, oval, lanceolate leaves are mid to dark green. In winter tiny, greenish, yellow flowers appear, surrounded by large colorful bracts. These are usually bright red, but can also be creamy white, creamy yellow or a salmon pink. Water generously while flowering, keeping soil very moist. Feed every two weeks while flowering. Norfolk Island Pine ~ These plants can grow to a height of approximately 165 feet in their native land of Australia. Grown in pots, they reach a height of 3 to 6 ½ feet, (1 to 2 meters). This plant has evergreen, needle-like leaves. They are darkish green on a fattened limb. It looks like a small Christmas tree; this makes it perfect for decorating for the holidays. Make sure to give this plant a quarter turn every two weeks so it will grow evenly. The Norfolk Island Pine likes a cool, bright room, temperature 44 to 50 degrees F, (6 to 10 degrees C) and needs good ventilation. Water generously during the growing season, spring and summer. Keep the root ball almost dry in winter. Choose a place with plenty of light and keep out of mid day sun in summer. Feed every two weeks in spring and summer. Repot every two years when it is young. Once it has reached 3 feet, (1 meter) a top dressing will suffice. Use a mixture of topsoil, compost, peat and sand. Keep away from heating vents. Christmas Cactus ~ These plants have trailing stems, sometimes as much as 24 inches long. They are medium green, flat segments with pointed edges. They have tubular flowers, consisting of several layers of star-like petals. They are about 1 inch in diameter. The colors are pink, red, white, and yellow. They bloom in late fall or winter. Christmas Cacti are easy to grow. In spring or summer, take stem cuttings 2 or 3 segments. Allow them to dry for a few hours, then plant them in a mixture of peat and sand. Once it flowers, the plant will likely drop the buds if it is moved or exposed to sudden temperature changes or cold drafts. From spring to fall, water regularly. When flowering, keep soil moist, and do not let the plant sit in water in the saucer. Reduce watering during the 2 to 4 weeks after flowering, and again in the fall before flowering. They like bright light. Keep out of direct light. Feed every two weeks in spring and summer. Repot after flowering. In fall, give your plant cool temperatures of about 15 to 18 degrees C. This will encourage abundant flowering. These three plants are some of my favorites for the Christmas season. Have fun with them, decorate the pine, and give them as gifts. Enjoy your holidays.

While being a landlord has its perks, there is some risk involved. If you’re renting your property, or are thinking about doing so, there are some things you can do to make sure you protect yourself. Rental History Reports provides tenant screening and other resources to small landlords looking for ways to protect their investments. The company offers the following advice on how to avoid five common mistakes landlords make: 1. Not screening your tenants. Failing to run a tenant background check is perhaps the biggest mistake you can make as a small landlord, as it will help you avoid numerous other mistakes. Screening tenants is easy and affordable, and you can choose packages that best suit your situation. When you use a tenant screening service, you should be able to find out if your prospective tenant has a criminal record, previous evictions or any other red flags that might hamper their ability to pay their rent. 2. Eschewing paper work. In the legal world, if it’s not on paper, it might as well have never happened. No matter how much you might trust a potential tenant, making them sign a lease is absolutely necessary. If you’re unsure about the type of language you should include in the lease, you may want to consult with a legal service that can help you. 3. Staying far away from the property. You might think you’re intruding on your renters if you visit often, but good renters will be happy you care about your property. If you’re keeping the place nice, your renters will be happy to see you. And if your renters don’t welcome your visits, you may have reason to be concerned. 4. Unknowingly violating the Fair Housing Act. While it’s important that you protect yourself by learning about prospective tenants’ legal status and rental history, there are certain things that you can’t ask. Familiarize yourself with the Fair Housing Act to learn what types of questions to avoid. For starters, questions about race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and family situation are off limits. Asking such questions could open yourself to legal action if you turn down the person’s request to rent your property. 5. Ignoring important repairs. When you’re renting out your home, it’s tougher to notice things that need to be fixed when you’re not living there. Establish with your prospective tenants that you want to be made aware of any issues so you can fix them promptly. It’s also important to make sure fire alarms, locks and other important items that make a home safe are working properly before you turn the keys over to your tenants - you could be held legally responsible if they aren’t.
