The beautiful look of Granite – Only BETTER! Granite Transformations offers new and exciting alternatives to traditional countertops, backsplashes, floors and more. The world’s best granite countertop Trend Stone gives you the gorgeous look you deserve without the demolition and installation headaches associated with traditional slab granite. The unique product lines of beautiful Trend Stone, Trend Glass and Trend Mosaics are manufactured from the finest natural materials taken from the best granite quarries throughout the world. With new products and ideas being introduced throughout the year, Granite Transformations is used by homeowners, commercial and domestic interior designers, architects, builders and developers worldwide. Granite Transformations provides an innovative product for home owners wanting granite without the demolition that a typical kitchen renovation requires. Our ¼ inch slabs of engineered granite fit right over top of existing countertops and are 95% granite mixed with a specially formulated (Forever Seal) that increases the strength and durability. The result is an engineered surface designed to outperform natural slab granite that is heat, scratch and stain resistant – essentially maintenance free – and backed with the company’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. Additionally, the surface is permanently sealed and is therefore non-porous so you never have to worry about germs and bacteria hiding out in the stone surface. The business philosophy of Granite Transformations of Southern Alberta is to provide superior customer service and a quality finished product every time. Granite Transformations is manufacturer-owned; they sell what they manufacture and stand behind the product that they install in your home. All installers work exclusively for
Granite Transformations and are Granite Transformations accredited so the customer doesn’t have to worry about the often unreliable schedule of a contracted middle man. With friendly knowledgeable staff and a fantastic product the customer is sure to be satisfied with their new countertops! Even more impressive still, the company is involved in a worldwide effort to produce more materials with recycled content and to reduce their impact on the environment. The Trend Glass product is produced with up to 72% post-consumer recycled glass and a low carbon emission production process. By re-surfacing existing surfaces Granite Transformations can divert over 18 million lbs of waste from the landfill worldwide per year. Additionally, Granite Transformations is recognised by numerous associations and certifications such as The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, NAF International, and the U.S Green Building Council, just to name a few. Granite Transformations truly is a product that you can feel good about having in your home. Granite Transformations of Southern Alberta has a showroom located in Airdrie, AB and services all of Southern Alberta (excluding the city of Calgary.) In addition, they offer free in-home consultations with a design consultant so customers can see the colors in their homes and feel comfortable with the design choices they make. The Haircut
One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you, I’m doing community service this week.’ The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door. Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you , I’m doing community service this week.’ The cop was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door. Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.’ The Congressman was very happy and left the shop. The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

Jock Talk with Jock Wilson
Do the Calgary Flames have a plan?
He preaches “intellectual honesty” and claims he is not auditioning for the job, however let’s face the facts! Jay Feaster is not the General Manager of the Calgary Flames, he is the acting General Manager. Feaster maintains this is not an issue and he has full powers to do his job but it does leave a reasonable doubt that he may not be the man moving this organization forward in the off-season. Why the uncertainly? In my opinion, the Calgary Flames ownership group is currently evaluating the future of President Ken King. If ownership decides a change of culture is needed at the top then it’s unlikely Feaster will become the full time guy. A new president would be hired and that individual would be responsible for hiring a new general manager. It’s interesting that Darryl Sutter has become the fall guy for the state of the Flames. In reality, Darryl Sutter and Ken King were a package deal. It was clear during the news conference in December that King didn’t want to fire Darryl. He was given no choice. What is the role of the president? Run the business side of the game and please stay out of the hockey decisions. The Calgary Stampeders have it right. Lyle Bauer is a former CFL player and a good football man but John Hufnagel has complete control of the football operations. While Ken King is a smart man and smooth talker it has become very clear over the years that his fingers are all over the hockey department. This is a major red flag! The Calgary Flames ownership group has a great relationship with Hockey Canada. Hockey Canada is the most successful National Sport Organization in this country and a lot of the credit goes to their President and Chief Executive Officer
Bob Nicholson. After 13 years with Hockey Canada and two Olympic Gold medals, the Calgary resident would be a perfect fit for the Flames. Nicholson’s name has been linked to NHL jobs in the past and it’s only a matter of time before the 58 year old makes the jump. “It would have to be for the right opportunity,” Nicholson told Mark Stephen and myself on Sportstalk earlier this year. “Hockey Canada is a great organization and I still have lots of work to do but I am always willing to listen.” When Harley Hotchkiss sold his shares in the Calgary Flames last year, it changed the dynamics and the structure of the ownership group. Murray Edwards is the Chairman of the Board and carries a lot of the power. Ultimately, the fate of Ken King may rest on his shoulders. There has been lots of speculation that this ownership group is divided and clearly they are not happy with the current state of the team. I do have confidence however that common sense will prevail and this ownership group will make the right call. Stay tuned as it may be a very interesting off season. Abbout Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for close to 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on QR77 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
From the Publishers Well, we are full swing into the New Year, with January behind us already! The time sure does fly by quickly. February can be a very humdrum month. We’re unquestionably right in the middle of winter, and I guess on the 2nd we will know what that cute little groundhog has to say about that! We have had more snow this year than in the past few, which gives me that old-fashioned feeling of the way winters use to be. The La Nina is holding true to form and this weather pattern may stay with us awhile as she is capable of staying for up to 5 years – which would be unusual – but it could happen. Our themes for this issue are “Get that Valentine’s feeling” and “Dinosaurs.” They don’t really go together but that is the fun of it – mix it up a bit! For Valentines - on Page 2829 you will find gift ideas for your sweetie, and for Dinosaur lovers, a quiz on the Family Page plus some fun items and activities. And, as we always love to share recipes, you will find lots of yummy new and marvelous creations throughout the magazine. Make sure you pick one of the three charities for the “Pennies from Heaven” as we will be presenting the cheque for $500.00 in March to the charity of your choice. Next months themes are “St. Patrick’s Day”, “Stuff for Kids” and “The World of Art”, so if you have any articles or creative ideas with these themes in mind, by all means share them with us and be included in the March Issue! So don’t forget your sweetie on the 14th and this month! You get two chances to be nice as the 17th is “Random Acts of Kindness Day” – do something nice for someone you know or even better, for a stranger – it’s good for your Karma!

Math Test
A man wants a job, but the foreman won’t hire him until he passes a little math test. Here is your first question, the foreman said. “Without using numbers, represent the number 9.” “Without numbers?” The man says? “That is easy.” And proceeds to draw three trees. “What’s this?” the boss asks. “Are you kidding? Tree and tree plus tree makes 9” says the man. “Fair enough,” says the boss. “Here’s your second question. Use the same rules, but this time the number is 99.” The man stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture that he has just drawn and makes a smudge on each tree... “Here you go.” The boss scratches his head and says, “How on earth do you get that to represent 99?” “Each of the trees are dirty now. So, it’s dirty tree, and dirty tree, plus dirty tree. That makes 99.” The boss is getting worried that he’s not going to be able to out smart this man, so he says, “All right, last question. Same rules again, but represent the number 100.” The man stares into space some more, then he picks up the picture again and makes a little mark at the base of each tree and says, “Here you go. One hundred.” The boss looks at the attempt. “You must be nuts if you think that represents a hundred!” The man leans forward and points to the marks at the base of each tree and whispers, “A little dog came along and pooped by each tree. So now you got dirty tree and a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree and a turd, which makes ONE HUNDRED!” The man is the new supervisor.

Dear Newsy Neighbour, As a new mom - and an old business owner - I was a little daunted by trying to build up my clientelle again after a 2 year hiatus. I worked for a year with the “usual” advertising options but found business quite slow. After advertising with The Newsy Neighbour for just 3 months I am now busy enough to open up 2 more days a week! Amanda Musselman - Natural Rhythmz Hello Kathryn: We were happy to see the Chestermere Art Guild ad in the last 2 issues of the Newsy Neighbour. It has generated more interest and we have had new people join the group. Thank you so much for including the ads and we hope you can continue to include these when space permits in future issues. Best wishes for a successful New Year. Regards: Elaine Palamar (On behalf of The Chestermere Fine Art Guild)

We do apologize for not mentioning The Pennies From Heaven Project for a couple of months – we have not forgotten! We were hoping to hear from more of you to let us know where to donate the $500.00, so consequently from the people we did hear from we have chosen the following charities. BODY PARTS – THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
All around us lurk millions of different types of dangerous germs. They are found on money, desks, food, and floating in the air. Our daily survival is possible with the work of our immune system; it is responsible for our health. It consists of both internal and external barriers that fight the daily battle against various microbes - small organisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. The first barrier is the skin. There are millions of microbes living on us. In fact, the human hand has over several million microbes! The skin secretes an antibacterial substance that kills most bacteria and spores that land on our bodies. In addition, the eyes and nose contain an enzyme that breaks down the bacteria cell wall, and acids in the stomach are quick to destroy any bacteria that enter. Internally, tiny hairs in our lungs called cilia help keep bacteria and dust away. When germs do make it past our first line of defence, illness can occur and then the most important part of the immune system, the white blood cells, begin to fight back. White blood cells, such as leukocytes and phagocytes, fight off the harmful microbes. Sometimes the body needs assistance in fighting against certain diseases. This is accomplished with vaccinations, which were discovered during the time of the smallpox epidemic. They consist of weakened doses of a virus that trigger white blood cells to create antibodies as a defense against the virus. Bacterial infections are different from viral infections in that they are living cells and can reproduce on their own. Not all bacteria are harmful. The bacteria that cause disease are called pathogens. In 1928, a form of bacteria was discovered that actually kills bacteria. Today, this antibiotic is known as penicillin. There are various organs which form the Immune System: Bone Marrow (every cell involved in your immune system is initially derived from bone marrow), the Thymus produces “T” cells beneficial to your immune system, your Spleen filters your blood, and the Lymph Nodes drain fluid from the majority of the tissues. All together, these organs form your Immune www.thenewsyneighbor.com
System. To understand the power of the immune system, all that you have to do is look at what happens to anything once it dies. That sounds gross, but it does show you something very important about your immune system. When something dies, its immune system (along with everything else) shuts down. In a matter of hours, the body is invaded by all sorts of bacteria, microbes, and parasites. None of these things are able to get in when your immune system is working, but the moment your immune system stop, the door is wide open. Once you die, it only takes a few weeks for these organisms to completely dismantle your body and carry it away, until all that’s left is a skeleton. Obviously, your immune system is doing something amazing to keep all of that dismantling from happening when you are alive. There are also all kinds of human ailments that are caused by the immune system working in incorrect ways that cause problems. For example, some people have allergies. Allergies are really just the immune system overreacting to certain stimuli that other people don’t react to at all. Some people have diabetes, which is caused by the immune system inappropriately attacking cells in the pancreas and destroying them. Some people have rheumatoid arthritis, which is caused by the immune system acting inappropriately in the joints. Eating properly as with any part of your precious body will help keep your Immune system healthy. Eat lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and foods rich in healthy fatty acids.

FAMILY PAGE FEBRUARY 2011 I love February! Not only is it the month of Love, but it is also the Family Month. February 14th is Valentines Day and February 21st is Family Day. Family Day was first observed in Alberta in 1990 to recognize the values held by the pioneers who built Alberta and to emphasize the importance of home and family values. It is a statutory holiday so you can spend the whole day with your family doing fun and cool stuff. With all the snow we have, you could go skiing, ice skating or tobogganing. Pack a lunch with hot chocolate or “special coffee” and have a memory-making afternoon. Make sure to take the camera and take some wild and wacky family photos! Colour Me
Since February 14th is Valentines Day I have included some Valentine Day recipes and crafts you and your kids can make together. Have Fun and share the Love on Valentines Day! I absolutely love this idea for a Valentines Day Scroll – a keepsake you will keep forever. Make one for Mom, Dad, Grandpa or Grandma or even a friend.
VALENTINES DAY SCROLL
All you need is three different colours of acrylic paint – gold, red and green, a make-up sponge, red or gold marker, your children’s hands and any colour construction paper you choose. The packages of 8 ½” by 11” have lots of different colours. You change your child’s handprint into pretty flowers
Craft Instructions:
Brush red craft paint on your child's hands, one at a time, and press on the paper. Repeat with the other hand. Paint on simple leaves and stems - you don't have to be picture perfect! With the makeup sponge and gold paint, sponge gold highlights around the edge of the picture. Write a personal message in red or gold marker, like "I love you Mom" or you can write whatever you like, wherever there is space. Let the picture dry, then roll up and tie the red ribbon around it like a scroll. Hand-deliver your Valentine scroll to the special person and later, you (or Mom) can place it in a glass frame to save forever! Here are some other really cute and different ideas for homemade crafts the whole family can have a great time sitting around the table and being creative. There is a real sense of accomplishment when children create their own special gift.
Valentines Jar – Take any size jar and fill it with layers of different candies and chocolates then cut a round top out of material and put over the lid with an elastic. EASY Painted Stones – I think you get the picture. EASY Rose Bowl Candle – We all have those old Rose Bowls laying around the house – just put beads, marbles or colored glass pebbles in the bowl and set in any type candle – use your imagination. EASY Book Marks – Make them out of construction paper and use your imagination. EASY Rhinestone Studded Candle – Go to the dollar store and buy a good-sized candle – they also have all sorts of studs and stuff you could press into the candle to make it your own special creation. EASY See there are all sorts of fun and inexpensive, cool things your whole family can make together on Valentines Day and just change the theme and do these on Family Day as well. And as you are all have a fun filled day making crafts enjoy these scrumptious... Valentine Oreo Truffles - 1 package of Oreo cookies or enough to make 3 cups of Oreo cookie crumbs 2 packages of cream cheese, softened, 2-1/4 cups of good quality semi-sweet chocolate chips, heart shaped sprinkles. Use a food processor or blender to reduce enough Oreo cookies to make three cups of fine crumbs. Set aside. Melt chocolate in a double boiler OR empty chocolate chips into a large microwaveable mixing bowl and microwave on high, stirring at 45 second increments, until the chips are melted. It shouldn’t take more than two or three minutes - but watch carefully, as chocolate goes from melted to burnt very quickly in the microwave. Add softened cream cheese and mix thoroughly with chocolate, until all white streaks are gone. Add three cups of the Oreo crumbs. The mixture will be stiff, but continue stirring until it is thoroughly combined and fairly smooth. Set out a shallow bowl of heart shaped candy sprinkles or another choice of coating (more Oreo crumbs, ground nuts, coloured sugar or other sprinkles) Form dough into small balls and roll in the sprinkles to coat. Place each Oreo truffle into a paper candy cup. Store in the fridge and serve slightly chilled for the best texture and taste. See why I love February?! There are so many ways to spend time with your family! Have the most wonderful and special time together! By: Kathryn Hartwell

About 70 million years ago, a large portion of North America’s midwest was a lush tropical habitat complete with a vast inland sea. This was home to dinosaurs large and small. The portion in Alberta now known as the Canadian Badlands, has some of the world’s richest deposits of prehistoric fossils and dinosaur finds.
Some Dino names you probably don’t know:
It is impossible to tell how many species of dinosaurs there were roaming the earth. Approximately 700 species have been found and named, but new species are found each year so that number is always changing.

Dinosaur Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See their ad on the next page. The park is well known for being one of the richest dinosaur fossil locales in the world. Forty dinosaur species have been discovered at the park and more than 500 specimens have been removed and exhibited in museums across the globe.

One of the largest dinosaurs that ever lived, Tyrannosaurus rex was a fierce carnivore. Scientists believe this powerful predator could eat up to 500 pounds (230 kilograms) of meat in one bite.
Everything about this ferocious predator, from its thick, heavy skull to its 4-foot-long (1.2-meterlong) jaw, was designed for maximum bone-crushing action. It became extinct about 65 million years ago

February is Responsible Pet Owner’s Month. I cannot believe that a person would purchase a pet just to neglect it – the thought of it just makes me sick inside. Please make sure if you have a pet, you love it and never neglect it. If you know of a pet being neglected, you can contact the SPCA in Calgary at 403-205-4455; they have a direct line just for neglected and abused animals. Did you know there is an organization based in Strathmore called the Happy Cat Sanctuary, which is run by a small group of volunteers dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating stray and abandoned cats? You can reach them at 403-804-8571. They are in need of donations and their wish list includes: dry or canned food, litter of any kind, cat beds and clean blankets, towels, cat toys and treats and any donation of money is greatly appreciated. 100% goes to the cats and they issue tax receipts for donations over $10. Their email is happycatsanctuary@gmail. com. Help them out if you can! Well, we have 4 animals – 2 dogs and 2 cats, and “spoiled” is the word that comes to mind with my pets. As a matter of fact, we call our smallest dachshund Kayla “the little princess” – she has her own pillow on our bed! Well, recently we have started clipping our dogs nails ourselves, since My Best Friends Pet Store has closed in Chestermere. If you have not tried to cut your dogs nails before, let me tell you – it truly is a traumatic experience for all involved. The dogs are small so we figured out if we wrap them in a blanket before the operation, we can hold on to them a little better – one person holds and one-person clips. It seems to be getting a little better each time and we give them lots of snuggles and treats after, but the whole process is not for the frail of heart and not one little bit fun – at all. I was so nervous the first time because I have heard all sorts of nightmarish stories about people cutting the nails too short and hitting nerves and veins and the dogs bleed a lot! I hope that never happens to me – I would feel guilty forever for hurting one of my precious friends, so I did a bit of research to help just in case the traumatic event ever occurred.
What to do If You Accidentally Clip a Pet’s Nail Too Short
Clipping a dogs nail too short can cause pain and bleeding. The nail quick is also prone to infection if a dogs nail is broken or trimmed too short. Clipping a dogs nails on a regular basis is an important part of home dog grooming. But many dog owners get nervous when it comes to clipping a dogs nails, and even the most careful and cautious pet owner may accidentally cut a dogs nail too short, causing pain, bleeding and even a nail infection that can spread up into the toe and paw. 1. Before starting a dogs nail trimming, get some styptic powder - a powder that promotes blood clotting, thereby stopping the flow of blood from a dogs broken nail or a nail that’s been trimmed too short. Keep the styptic powder nearby, just in case of a nail trimming mishap. 2. If a dogs nail breaks or if the dogs nail is trimmed too close to the quick, bleeding will occur almost instantaneously. Dip the dogs bleeding nail into the styptic powder. In the absence of styptic powder, use cornstarch. If cornstarch is not available, try flour. 3. Once the styptic powder (or styptic powder substitute, like corn starch) is applied to the dog’ broken nail, keep the dog quiet and do not allow him to walk. Distract the dog and do not let him lick the injured paw. 4. If the bleeding from the dogs nail is heavy, apply additional styptic powder. 5. After the bleeding slows (it usually takes a couple of minutes), get a clean paper towel and apply pressure to the dogs injured nail. Be aware that nail injuries in dogs can be very painful and the dog may cry out, snap or bite. Use of a muzzle is strongly recommended to avoid injury to the dogs caretaker. Now that I have shared this most important information about clipping your dogs nails perhaps you may feel a little bit relieved to know they will not die if you clip their nails too short. Personally, I’m not feeling relieved at all, but I have lived through the clipping experience a few times now with no complications other than personal heart palpitations and the dogs seem just as happy as ever when it is over – that could change some day if there ever is a mishap! So for those brave and adventurous nail clippers out there I raise my glass and cheer, “I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it”. ~Pablo Picasso If you are still too scared to clip your own dogs nails, you can always send them to a professional dog groomer, like the ones who advertise in the Newsy Neighbour! They are professional, experienced, and definitely affordable!! Page 20

Dwarf Hamsters
Did you know Hamsters can remember their relatives? They can also be taught to come by name! When dwarf hamsters are pregnant, you can determine the sex of their babies by controlling the temperature in the room the mother is kept, you can manipulate whether she will have more boys or girls. For real!! If you keep her in warmer temperatures, she will have more boys. If you keep her in cooler temperatures, she will have more girls. Make sure not to make the room too warm or too cold though, this could be unhealthy for the hamster. Dwarf hamsters only live about 1.5 to 2 years but can live to be 4. Very rarely do they live longer than that though. Your female dwarf hamster can give birth as young as five weeks. This is not recommended though. You should wait until she is at least 3 months old. (5 weeks is a little young. Although so is 3 months) haha. Does your hamster chew on his cage bars? Try giving him dog biscuits. They’re hard, tasty, and wear down his teeth. He will want to chew on the biscuit rather than the cage.

I AM A BROCCOLI Hello my name is Buraccus Broccoli and I come from Italy. My name – Broccoli means “the flowering top of a cabbage” and in ancient Roman times more than 2,000 years ago on the far away continent of Europe the ancient Etruscans, who were considered to be horticultural geniuses engineered us from wild cabbage and we were cultivated to form my flower heads which people really loved to eat. When we came to England by our good friend and sculptor Peter Scheemakers we were called “Italian asparagus,” and even though commercial cultivation of my relatives dates back to the 1500s, we did not become familiar in North America until the colonial times when Italian immigrants made us popular in the 1920s. Like the artichoke, we are like large edible flowers. You can eat us both raw and cooked. We are related to cabbage, kale, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. We are rich in calcium and have anti-oxidant properties, which help prevent some forms of cancer. We provide special cholesterol-lowering benefits when you steam us and contain Glucoraphanin, gluconasturtiian and glucobrassicin, which are three glucosinolate phytonutrients in a special combination in our bodies for your body. We are the dynamic trio, able to support all steps in your body’s detox process, including activation, neutralization and elimination of unwanted contaminants. Wow , we are super Broccoli, and that’s nothing! We have an unusually strong combination of both vitamin A and vitamin K as well! For people faced with the need to rebuild vitamin D stores through vitamin D supplements, we are the ideal food. We also are a rich source of a flavonoid called kaempferol, which lessen the impact of allergy-related substances on your body. Now this is really important: do not boil me in water, but steam me for no longer than 5 minutes if you want to keep all my nutrients and flavour. Did you know more than 300 studies have been done on me all about the three metabolic problems in your body? They are chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and inadequate detoxification. These are all really bad things for your body! Well, I’ll have you know that we are unique among foods to change this set of connections between inflammation, oxidative stress, detox and cancer. In fact, it would be fair to describe broccoli as containing antiinflammatory nutrients, antioxidant nutrients, detox-support nutrients and anti-cancer nutrients as well!! I’m not kidding when I say I could go on and on about how extremely well I am for you and your body; but I hate to brag, so instead I have included a few really good ways you can eat me. You are going to make me your new best friend and you will really love these yummy recipes. Take care!

Drain. In large bowl stir together oil, vinegar, garlic, basil, salt and pepper. Toss with warm macaroni, Parmesan, broccoli, pepperoni and tomatoes. Cover and refrigerate 2 – 3 hours. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and serve. This salad is awesome because you can leave it in your refrigerator and snack on it for days. I love cream soups and this cream of Broccoli is one of my favourites and it is sooo good for you. Best Cream of Broccoli Soup 2 Tbsp. Butter 3 Tbsp. Butter 1 Onion, chopped 3 Tbsp. Season with pepper and serve. • Broccoli nutrition facts are astounding. • Broccoli helps fight cancer, especially breast, colon and lung. Pound cake refers to a type of cake traditionally made with a pound of each of four ingredients: flour, butter, eggs, and sugar. The traditional recipe makes a cake much larger than most families can consume, and so the quantity is often changed to suit the size of the cake that is desired. BASICALLY, any cake made with a 1:1:1:1 ratio of flour, butter, eggs, and sugar is also called a pound cake. YUM Lets all pack on some pounds and enjoy a pound cake!

Butter, also makes G EVERYTHIN better!!! 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, softened, plus additional for buttering pan 3 cups sifted cake flour (not self-rising; sift before measuring) plus additional for dusting 3/4-teaspoon salt 3 cups sugar 7 large eggs, at room temperature 30 minutes 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 cup heavy cream Put oven rack in middle position, but do not preheat oven. Generously butter pan and dust with flour, knocking out excess flour. Sift together sifted flour (3 cups) and salt into a bowl. Repeat sifting into another bowl. Beat together butter (2 sticks) and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer at medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 6 to 8 minutes with a handheld mixer. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition, then beat in vanilla. Reduce speed to low and add half of flour, then all of cream, then remaining flour, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down side of bowl, and beat at medium-high speed 5 minutes. Batter will become creamier and satiny. Spoon batter into pan and rap pan against work surface once or twice to eliminate air bubbles. Place pan in (cold) oven and turn oven temperature to 350°F. Bake until golden and a wooden pick or skewer inserted in middle of cake comes out with a few crumbs adhering, 1 to 1 1/4 hours. Cool cake in pan on a rack 30 minutes. Run a thin knife around inner and outer edges of cake, then invert rack over pan and invert cake onto rack to cool completely. Sent in by Beth in Beaumont, Alberta

Are you thinking of landscaping you acreage or yard with shrubs, trees or fruit bearing plants?
Now is the time to order from J&J Gardens near Lyalta. J&J Gardens is a small nursery operating from their 100 year old farm. They have been growing trees and shrubs for 30 years and selling bare root plants in the area for 14 years. Shipping bare root plants is common with wholesalers and mail order companies. Customer savings are significant, compared to purchasing potted or burlap plants. This business is similar to a mail order catalogue nursery, except the customers pick up their plants at the farm. J&J dig the presold plants in early April, as soon as the ground is thawed and while the plants are still dormant. They bundle the bare roots (soil-less) with moist shavings, newspaper and plastic to hold the plants over several days until the customer picks up the order and transplants them. The shorter the time that elapses between digging and replanting, the better the plants do. Plant survival is dependent on consistent watering the first spring/summer, with quality water. Most of the growth during the first year of transplant will be in the roots as they are re-established; therefore, tall transplants require staking on the side where the winds are dominant. Most of J&J Garden’s sales are to local repeat customers and their friends, who have had good success with their transplants. This year the nursery is offering $5 off any $50+ new customer order. Orders and payments are taken in early February only. Pickups are arranged for early April or as soon as the ground is thawed. As a service to our customers, we are also selling bird netting, deer and rabbit repellant and spring loaded cherry pitters. Interested customers may request a 2011 flyer through email, fax or post. An Old German Shepherd
One day an old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he’s lost. Wandering about, he notices a panther heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch. The old German Shepherd thinks, “Oh, oh! I’m in deep doo-doo now!” Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the panther is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly,“Boy, that was one delicious panther! I wonder, if there are any more around here?” Hearing this, the young panther halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. “Whew!,” says the panther, “That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!” Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the panther. So, off he goes. The squirrel soon catches up with the panther, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the panther. The young panther is furious at being made a fool of and says, “Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what’s going to happen to that conniving canine!” Now, the old German Shepherd sees the panther coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks, “What am I going to do now?,” but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old German Shepherd says... “Where’s that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another panther!” Moral of this story... Don’t mess with the old dogs... Age and skill will always overcome youth and treachery, and brilliance only comes with age and experience. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Your Attention Hogging Friend Everyone has that friend who has the desire to be the center of attention all the time. It’s okay to have his or her company for a few minutes, but he or she just becomes an insecure, self-centered attention seeker whom you cannot stand hanging out with for too long. Here are some ways to get rid of an attention hog.
Zone Out
Attention-seekers tend to exploit your graciousness and your willingness to listen. Once they start talking about themselves or their opinions on things, they can’t seem to stop. They have the tendency to become emotional vampires because they are too preoccupied with making themselves the center of everyone’s attention. The more you entertain an attention-hog, he or she will find ways to completely space you out of the conversation, and attempt to divert your attention to his or her stories and antics. While you can accommodate the irritation that comes with having an attention hog for a friend, you can instead zone out. Let the conversation get in one ear, but you can always let it out the other. While you can give your friend the impression that you’re listening, you can think about other things other than the one-way conversation taking place.
Change the Topic
Some people are smooth talkers, but not even the most conversational people can talk about everything. A quick topic change can help a lot to send a message to your friend that he or she does not need to involve himself or herself with every conversation. Attention-hogs butt in on every interesting conversation. If you want to get rid of an attention hog and you want to space him or her out of the conversation, you may want to sustain a conversation that’s not interesting at all.
Assert Yourself
Attention-seekers are “bullies,” in the sense that they invade your personal space by robbing you of your undivided attention and monopolizing conversations. Sometimes you have to stand up for yourself and your right to space: • Stand your ground. Sometimes it’s best to politely but sternly tell your friend that he or she is becoming quite disruptive and annoying, and that it may be more respectful for him or her to listen to conversations more than just trying to interject or interrupt. • Leave the conversation. If your patience is sorely tested by an attention-hog, it may do you good to just excuse yourself from the conversation, and leave. Your friend may take that as a sign that you’re irritated, and that he or she can take a hint from your actions.

Talk About Yourself a Lot
Turning the tables on an attention-seeker can make him or her realize how annoying or hurtful it can be to be spaced out of a conversation. You can show him or her an example of his or her own bad behaviour by talking about yourself and what you think of things, events, and issues. By talking about yourself a lot, you can space out the attention-hog from the conversation and make him or her learn a valuable lesson in etiquette. Attention hogs pig out on every conversation, leaving no room for other people to talk and to interact. With these steps, you can get rid of an attention hog and give everyone their space to talk and to participate in events and gatherings. These steps could ultimately save your friendship with your attention hogging friend, and maybe help them change their attitude for the better! www.thenewsyneighbor.com

MY FAVORITE-FABULOUSFANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF
One of my most favourite-fabulous things is money. You can never have too much and there are so many fantastic things that are really fun that you can spend your money on – it’s really never ending. However, with money comes responsibility to look after it and if you don’t, you may not have as much as you would like. Someone once said, “when prosperity comes your way, don’t use it all”, and if you do not look after your money someone else can. The predictions for 2011 are astronomical as to the number of identity thefts there will be. You don’t just have to worry about bad guys stealing your mail or hacking into your bank accounts. Your computer, your phone and even your Facebook account can provide identity thieves all the information they need to mess with your financial life. Organized-crime syndicates, individual hackers and common criminals are all working overtime to exploit our weaknesses. This is how they do it: you, or one of your friends, reveal too much information on Facebook. NEVER use the name of a spouse, child or pet in your passwords; but many people do, and then they or their friends will make reference to the names on Facebook – bad idea! Or, bad guys take over your friends account because they clicked on a malicious link and revealed their password. The bad guys then send a message to you and all his contacts, saying “I can’t believe you did that in this video,” and you click on the link, and you could be tricked into revelling information, or have malware surreptitiously installed on your computer. You can click on a link and expose yourself to fraud. Sites like bit.ly and TinyURL are great for shortening long URL’s, which make them perfect for texting, Twitter and... scammers. You can’t tell where you’re going when you click on one of these shortened links, so you could wind up in trouble. Treat links in texts and Tweets just like you would a link in an e-mail: be extremely suspicious if you don’t recognize the source and very suspicious even when you do (because of account takeover). If you click and are sent to a site that asks for e-mail, password or any other identifying information, or asks you to reset your password – even if it looks exactly like Twitter or whatever other site you were using –bail immediately. Here are some really good tips to help you from getting into trouble. Bulk up your privacy settings. On Facebook, go to www.thenewsyneighbor.com
the Account link, click on Privacy Settings, and set everything to Friends Only. Don’t “give away the store”. Don’t include your phone number, physical address, e-mail address or birth year on your profile, and consider not using your birthday at all, even if it means forgoing birthday wishes. Your full date of birth is one of the keys to your identity, and not including the year is kind of pointless if you then join the “Central High School 1992 Reunion” group. When in doubt, don’t. If you get a message or post directing you to a video or picture, be extremely cautious. Try to contact the friend who sent it via some other medium (like the phone) to make sure it’s legit. If you can’t confirm that it is, don’t click on it. Change your password. Don’t use the same password for social media, e-mail and financial accounts, and if your social-media account is compromised in any way, change your password immediately. Change your passwords regularly anyway -- every few months is good. It’s a little extra work, but it makes your world safer. Now back to the fun part – money, money, and money. This is a wonderful exercise for your Karma. Just for a moment, set aside your workday frustrations and anxieties to dream a little. What if you suddenly had enough money that you never had to work again? How would you change your life? Grab a piece of paper and write everything down. Really dream the biggest dreams; really envision the way it would be. Think about your most heartfelt goals. Have fun, be silly, use your imagination. Then, when you are done dreaming, make a change – what one little thing could you do to save some money that you do not really need to spend? I changed my cell service and saved $50.00 a month – that’s $600.00 a year – that’s a lot of money. I wish I owned a cell company – the billions of dollars they make because people think they MUST talk or text all day long. Remember the good ole days when all we had was a home phone? Oh, the peace and tranquility – people would save up all the things they had to say and talk to you when you were home to answer the phone – and you know what, the world kept on rolling and nothing fell apart. With all the phones in our family including all the kid,s we spend collectively over $800.00 a month – to talk. Can you believe that?! Pretty crazy! Well, have fun with this dream – it could happen – dreams do come true. By: Kathryn Hartwell www.thenewsyneighbor.com

CHIA SEEDS are the new “SUPER FOOD” have you heard? Whole Chia seeds are gluten-free. Seeds can be ground or left whole and mixed into smoothies or added to baked goods. They can be sprinkled on cereal, salads, or yogurt. They can also be sprouted and used in salads or sandwiches. High levels of antioxidants keep Chia seeds naturally fresh, unlike flax seed, which easily becomes rancid. The seeds are easily digested and do not have to be ground to be used. Chia seeds soaked in water (for about 30 minutes) form a gel. These amazing seeds soak approximately 5 times their weight in water. The gel can be added to sauces, dips or anything. In Mexico, the seeds are mixed with water and a little bit of lime or lemon juice to make a drink called “Chia Fresca.” Be creative! How does Chia Seed compare to flax seed? The biggest difference is that chia seed does not need to be ground to get it’s nutritional content. Chia doesn’t go rancid quickly like flax seed because chia seed has high levels of antioxidants. Chia seed also has more fiber, calcium, magnesium & phosphorus than flax seed. 2 tablespoons (1 oz) of chia seeds contains: Calories 138 - Calories from Fat 73 - Total Fat 9g - Saturated Fat 1g Trans Fat 0g - Cholesterol 0mg - Sodium 5mg - Total Carbohydrate 12g - Dietary Fiber 11g Sugars - Protein 4g Facts: - Chia seeds are a high energy endurance food that has been recorded as far back as the ancient Aztecs. - Once valued so much that it was used as currency. - Research believe this same gel-forming phenomenon takes place in the stomach when food containing these gummy fibers, known as mucilages, are eaten. The gel that is formed in the stomach creates a physical barrier between carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down, thus slowing the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar. - Chia Seed protein is gluten-free. - Chia seed has high oil content, and the richest vegetables source for the essential omega-3 fatty acid. It has approximately three to ten times the oil concentrations of most grains and one and a half to two times the protein concentrations of other grains - It was also used by the Indians and missionaries as a poultice for gunshot wounds and other serious injuries. They would pack the wounds with Chia seeds to avoid infections and promote healing! DO YOUR RESEARCH - YOU WILL BE IMPRESSED! The Newsy Neighbour

Any of our readers that enjoy participating in the Running of the Bulls in Strathmore Heritage Days should read this information below.
How to deal with a charging bull
1) Look for an escape route, cover, or high ground. Bulls can easily outrun humans. 2) Remove your shirt or hat. Use this to distract the bull. It does not matter what colour the clothing is - bulls react to movement, not colours. 3) If the bull charges, remain still and then throw your shirt or hat away from you. The bull should head toward the moving object

How to survive an avalanche
1) Struggle to stay on top of the snow by using a freestyle swimming motion. 2) If you are only partially buried, dig your way out as fast as you can 3) If you are completely buried, dig a small home around you and drool. The Saliva will head down; telling you which direction is up. Dig up, and do it quickly.
How to treat frostbite
You can tell if its frostbite if the skin is white and waxy and feels numb and hard. In very severe cases the skin will have a bluish colour. Frostbite should always be treated by a doctor, but in an emergency situation do the following: 1) Remove any cold wet clothing and dress the area with warm, dry clothing. 2) Immerse frozen areas in warm water or apply warm compresses for ten to thirty minutes. 3) If water is not available, wrap gently in warm blankets or clothing. 4) Avoid direct dry heat including electric or gas fires. 5) Never thaw the area if it is at risk of refreezing; this can cause severe tissue damage.
How to deliver a baby in an emergency
1) Time the contractions. When contracts are about 3 to 5 minutes apart and last 40-90 seconds and frequency for at least an hour - the labour is most likely real. 2) As the baby moves out of the womb, its head will open the cervix so the rest of it can pass through. Make sure to guide the head as it comes out. 3) When the baby is completely out of the mother, dry it off with a clean towel or shirt and keep it warm. If necessary, clear any fluids our of the baby’s mouth and nose with your fingers. 4) Tie off the umbilical cord several inches from the baby using a piece of strong or a shoelace. Then leave it alone until you reach a hospital. If you are hours from a hospital, you can safely cut the cord by typing it in another place a few inches closer to the mother and cutting it between the knots. The placenta will follow in three to thirty minutes. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Pain? Self-Massage??Why Not!!! “My back hurts after I shovelled the sidewalk; my body is sore after working out at the gym; my body is stiff and sore after I redid my hardwood floors.” These are just some of the comments that are heard from people in pain. They all ask; “what can I do for the pain? What can I do to reduce or eliminate the stiff sore muscles?” These are questions that are common to people who are in pain. What if you can’t get a massage? Self-massage is the answer. There are so many positive reasons to try self-massage that it just makes perfect sense. Let’s learn some right now: The only real important tools needed are your hands, it is easy and safe to learn; with a little guidance you will find just how effortless it really is! You are the only one that really knows how hard or little pressure should be used. Self-massage can be performed by everyone, even a baby does it because it is just the natural thing to do. Self-massage is not complicated; we make it to be so! We were taught that something that easy should be more difficult to do. So some of us were lead to believe we need permission to do selfmassage! Self-massage can be performed on the body any time and at any pain level you are experiencing. With no side effects, what do you actually have to lose, but your pain?! Written by: Cynthia Barnesky

FIGHT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE WITH NITRIC OXIDE
In 1998, the Nobel Prize went to a team of researchers who discovered NITRIC OXIDE’s (NO) role as a key signaling molecule that keeps our cardiovascular system functioning at top level. NO is now recognized as a vital part of the vascular system and a key to long-term health. Why NO Matters NO is a short-lived gas produced in the endothelium—the innermost cell layer of your arteries. Once created , NO transmits a signal to other cells by penetrating the membranes and regulating the function of the cells. NO rapidly spreads through the cell membranes to the underlying muscle cells and signals a dilation or relaxing of the artery walls, which helps regulate blood pressure and enhance the blood flow to vital organs. These penetrating biological signals and messages influence every body organ, including the lungs, liver, stomach, genitals and kidneys. This signaling process is essential for the cardiovascular system to function properly. When the endothelium is healthy, nitric oxide is produced at optimal levels, and is released into the blood stream and carried on to every organ in the body. The bulk of NO is produced by the endothelium, so when blood vessels become lined with plaque build-up, NO production is significantly reduced. Lower production levels of NO can occur when endothelial tissue is damaged by age, lack of physical activity, illness, or genetics. Our nutrition and food choices also directly affect our bodies’ ability—or inability—to manufacture nitric oxide. L-Arginine and NO How do we battle decreased nitric oxide levels?? The answer is larginine. As a critical amino acid, larginine is converted into nitric oxide in the body and can help relax the blood vessels and their flexibility. The result is reduced stress on the heart, improved circulation, and an increased ability to maintain blood pressure already in the normal range. Dispelling the Myths of Alzheimer’s Disease There are many myths out there about Alzheimer’s disease. Here are some clarifications on a couple: 1) Because a family member has Alzheimer’s, I’m going to get it too. Although genetics play a role in the disease, only 7% of cases are related to genes that cause the early-onset inherited familial form of the disease. 2) Memory loss means Alzheimer’s disease. Many people have trouble with their memory, but that does not mean they have the disease. 3) Aluminum causes Alzheimer’s disease. 3) Aluminum causes Alzheimer’s disease. Although there has been much research into the connection between Alzheimer’s and aluminum, there is no conclusive evidence to show a link.
Some facts about the disease:
• Of the 500,000 Canadians who have Alzheimer’s disease, more than 70,000 are under the age of 65 years. • Three quarters of Canadians with Alzheimer’s disease are women. • 36% of Canadians know someone with Alzheimer’s disease. • Researchers predict that in five to seven years there will be treatments to attack the disease process itself, not just the symptoms. 85% of us have bacteria thriving in our mouths. It sneaks into the spaces between our teeth and gums. There is only so much we can do without help from our dentists. Brushing, flossing, and mouthwash sometimes are just not enough. Left alone, it can cause gum disease that produces all kinds of problems. At this point in time there is no cure for gum disease, but doctors do have options to help you deal with the conditions.
Do you suffer from any of these conditions? Sensitive teeth, persistent bad breath, bleeding while flossing, spaces developing between the teeth, receding gums (teeth appear longer), loose or mobile teeth. Research has proved that relief from inflammatory diseases in the body can be found from better oral health. Inflamed gums provide an easy point of entry for bacteria to enter your body. Once bacteria are in the blood stream, they can multiply and spread throughout the body causing problems that may not seem to be related. Most inflammatory diseases are arthritis, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease, blood clots and strokes. The infected wounds in your mouth should be treated the same as an open wound on your arm or leg would be treated. 80% of adults have some sort of gum disease and most of us don’t deal with it as soon as we should. Get your teeth and gums attended to on a regular basis to prevent bacteria from entering your blood stream.Routine home care and annual hygiene is not always enough to reduce your risk. If you have been putting off going to the dentist, make it a top priority for February.

VITAMINS
Vitamins are a mystery to me. I’m always wondering, should I take them, and do I need them, and there are so many different kinds of vitamins. Every month there seems to be a new one I should be taking! So I did a bit of research on the ones I was wondering if I should take and this is what I found. I hope this information is helpful for those of you going through the same dilemma. Folic Acid, or folate, is good for health, especially when pregnant, but many people do not realize that this substance is in fact a watersoluble version of vitamin B9. A water-soluble vitamin must be consumed everyday as these substances cannot be stored within the body for us when needed. For those who aren’t pregnant, it is still important to ensure folic is taken in the diet as a supplement, as it plays a significant role in cell maintenance and production, especially during cell division and growth. For pregnant women, a daily supplement of folic acid should be taken immediately. It has been found to play a major role in the development of the neural tube in a growing fetus. The baby could develop spina bifida or increased STRATHMORE chance of a cleft palate. Talk to your doctor. Foods that contain folic acid are: spinach, broccoli and sprouts, sunflower seeds, dried beans and many cereal products. Calcium. Most doctors recommend that all women take a daily calWinter Hours Now In Effect To Serve You Better cium supplement. This is especially true for women entering their Monday Thursday 9:30 - 8:30 • Friday 9:30 - 7 • Saturday & Sunday 10 - 3 30s and older, since calcium can help forestall osteoporosis. Specific groups of people benefit from calcium supplements, especially if they cannot get calcium as part of their regular diet. For many, a diet rich in dairy products provides more than enough calcium, and as long as the dairy products contain some fat, as in 1 or 2% milk, the calcium should be readily absorbed. Non-fat milk, also called skim milk, does not contain enough fat to absorb calcium efficiently. Instead, low fat milk is recommended for adults and children over the age of 5. Vitamin E - The term vitamin E describes a family of 8 antioxidants, 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols, alpha-tocopherol (a-tocopherol) is the only form of vitamin E that is actively maintained in the human body and is therefore, the form of vitamin E found in the largest quantities in the blood and tissue. Vitamin E, a fat-soluble vitamin, protects vitamin A and essential fatty acids from oxidation in the body cells and prevents breakdown of body tissues. You can get vitamin E from 4 main groups: (1) oils such as vegetable, corn, canola, sunflower, sesame, cottonseed, peanut, rice bran, and palm oils, (2) nuts like almonds, walnuts, peanuts, pistachios and hazelnuts, (3) legumes and grains like corn, lentils, wheat, rice, chickpeas, barley grass and oats, and (4) wheat germ oil had been used since the 20’s as a vitamin E supplement and offers a good combination of tocopherols plus tocotrienols. Selenium - Selenium is an antioxidant (scavengers of free radicals)) and a component of several essential enzymes. Health benefits of selenium are partly explained by its antioxidant effect. Selenium may delay or prevent the onset of cancer, and also have anti-aging effect. Selenium is also an important mineral needed for proper thyroid function. It also promotes immunity system. Selenium deficiency is associated with reduced immune cell counts and higher risk of death for HIV patients. If selenium is consumed in overdose, it may have toxicity effect. The upper intake level recommended for selenium (by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences) is 45 micrograms for infants and 400 micrograms for adults. Some of the symptoms of selenium toxicity are fatigue, hair loss, and white blotchy nails. Natural food sources high in selenium include cereals (corn, wheat, and rice), nuts (Brazil nuts and walnuts), legumes (soybeans), animal products (beef, chicken, egg, cheese), seafood (tuna). Other selenium rich foods are oats and turkey. Brazil nuts are among the very rich sources of selenium. In fact, it is advised to exercise caution with consumption of Brazil nuts, as the selenium intake could reach a toxic level. Like anything new, consult your doctor first. By: Kathryn Hartwell

You Are What You Absorb By James A. McHale D.C. Over the last twenty years, the concept of disease prevention really grew up. In the late 1970’s people who took vitamins and ate
organically grown foods were often referred to as “health nuts”. But all that is changing. In 1993 a startling fact regarding alternative medicine emerged. For the first time ever, Americans made more visits to alternative health practitioners than to “traditional” physicians (medical doctors and osteopaths). Leading the charge for alternative medicine was the idea of consuming nutritional supplements. The American diet consists of very little fresh fruits and vegetables. We find convenient foods-microwaved, frozen, pasteurized, and canned items don’t contain the necessary nutrients to help us lead vibrant, healthy lives. That is why vitamins and minerals are no longer taboo. In fact, the best selling pill in 1997 was not aspirin, Prozac, or the stimulant Ritalin. Centrum and Theragran M vitamin pills were the LEADERS and have contributed significantly to the multibillion-dollar nutritional supplement industry. Now for the bad news. The problem with these pills is that they are poorly absorbed into the body. Undigested vitamin/mineral pills don’t help us to receive the intended benefit-to fuel the body toward health, and may create other snags. Each month in Tacoma, Washington 165 thousand pounds of undigested vitamin and mineral pills are pulled out of the sewers. The filters in Salt Lake City, Utah are clogged with over 150 gallons of these pills each month. The reason: metal based minerals (like oyster shells), and essentially mini “rocks” are in the pills, and our bodies can’t digest them efficiently. According to the Physician’s Desk Reference, only about 10-20 percent of pills are absorbed. What does that mean to you, the consumer? If you spend $50 dollars a month on vitamin/mineral pills, then $40-$45 of it is may end up in your septic system! So now that we know that the vitamin pills are not well absorbed by the body, what do we do? Our bodies are able to absorb 98 percent of liquid nutritional supplements! Folks with digestive disorders like ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel, diverticulitis, and hernias can tolerate the liquids because they are easily absorbed and don’t irritate the digestive tract. The best sources are derived from sea vegetation that is organic-no pesticides or toxins should be used on them. Our bodies contain water that is very similar to seawater. The sodium, calcium, potassium, and sulfur contents of seawater is very easily recognized and absorbed by our systems. Our money is much better spent on those products that get into our blood streams to help us lead healthy, productive lives. The old saying “you are what you eat” is becoming outmoded. “You are what you absorb” seems to be more accurate. Dr. James McHale is a chiropractic physician, writer, and researcher. He lectures extensively in the United States and Canada about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Osteoporosis, and Alternative Medicine. MORE ABOUT JUICING
Costco has an amazing deal on a heavy-duty juicer right now. For $90.00, you can buy a juicer that will last you for the rest of your life. I have an old Juice Man Juicer, but it is starting to make a funny noise so I bought one of the Costco ones for when mine craps out. Truthfully, I seriously feel better since I have been juicing. I have more energy and just generally feel more healthy. I get all my fruits and vegetables in just one glass of my healthy mixture. I juice 6 carrots, 3 celery sticks, broccoli and either a lemon, lime or orange every morning. I don’t normally eat raw fruits and vegetables so having that one glass of goodness is easy and I don’t have to plan a meal around eating vegetables. Once you get into the routine you will be surprised at how it makes you feel – really! You can juice just about everything, including spinach and Brussels sprouts. You should give it a try – you may be surprised. With all the cancers out there, why not do something to try to fend off this most awe full disease? Plus, juicing is great for weight loss! Did you know juicing can support your fat burning and weight loss goals in a number of ways, including reducing cravings, jump starting your metabolism, saturating your cells with bioavailable nutrients, supporting your body’s natural fat burning processes, flushing toxins stored in your fat cells, and reducing acidity in your body?! Often times, the cause of your cravings for sweets and “super-sized” portions is because your body is starved for the nutrients that are supposed to be in your food in the first place. Unfortunately, because so much of our modern diet is void of the nutrients our bodies desperately need, our cravings increase as our body attempts to fill this nutrient void. Here are some juicing tips. For Weight Loss: 2 grapefruit, 2 celery sticks and 1 lemon. For Immunity: 2 lemons, 1 orange, 2 ounces pineapple and 1 carrot. For Allergies: 4 carrots and 3 celery stalks. Do something good for yourself and pull out the juicer you probably haven’t used in awhile or go buy one. Trust me, you will not be sorry! Grapefruit
Certain drugs can cause serious or occasionally lifethreatening effects if consumed in combination with grapefruit or its juice. Consuming grapefruit or its juice (fresh or frozen) can increase, or less commonly decrease, the effects of some drugs. There are several substances in grapefruit that interfere with the way your body handles certain drugs. Sour oranges, such as Seville, or their juice, may have an effect similar to grapefruit juice. Most other citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, citrons, naturally sweet oranges and tangerines are not thought to have this effect. However, tangellos, a hybrid of grapefruit, may also interfere with drugs. Research this further on the Health Canada website. Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais Join me each month as I review a great read. My passions are fantasy and science-fiction, but I do read other genres. Really, I do. I also lean toward local authors, when possible, as I think we have a wealth of artistic talent here in Alberta. I currently live in Strathmore with my wife, Connie, and my two children, Kieran and Maia-Lynn. I’ve been a teacher for most of the time we’ve lived in the province, which is over a decade now. My debut novel, MetalMagic: Talisman, was released in September, 2010, and I’m diligently working on the sequel—that is, when I’m not reading books or writing for my column. volved, and in doing that I had misled them all. Promising them something I couldn’t give: hope for mercy. I was a monster.” —Teigan Doe
Aviva Bel’Harold’s most recent novel, CHiP, is a young adult offering that takes place in a future dystopia where Advanced Research in Micro Machine Biology—ARM for short—an enigmatic, yet increasingly powerful multinational corporation, is attempting to establish a worldwide presence. The Company, as its employees name it, seeks to induct new recruits from among promising high school students by planting agents among them. These agents are enhanced individuals who have been altered using revolutionary microchip technology that augments their pre-existing skills and even provides them with amazing new abilities. Their goal is to recruit new potential agents who will, in turn, extend the increasing reach of ARM throughout the globe. That is, if they survive the induction process. Against this sinister backdrop play the lives of Tia Dellium, a rare survivor of the 2044 influenza epidemic, and Teigan Doe, a reluctant ARM recruiter. Tia and the youth of her generation are strictly controlled and segregated into schools that match up with their intelligence and career potential—a very Aldous Huxley-esque development. Relationships in Tia’s world are rigidly controlled, even to the extent that physical contact between parents and children of opposite genders is severely restricted. When the mysterious Teigan arrives at their school, Tia and her closest friend, Austin, are led to discover who he is and what his presence means. As an influenza survivor, Tia has developed some amazing gifts of her own, and she must use them to their fullest extent in order to unravel the secret behind Teigan’s sudden appearance. A long-term ARM recruiting agent, Teigan has grown weary of the costs the Company exacts from him and its potential candidates. He longs for an escape, for a respite from his job— and especially from the reality that many do not survive their recruitment. On seeing Tia, Teigan is both smitten and horrified, for even as she becomes indelibly etched upon the fabric of his mind, he’s aware that becoming involved with him is a near-certain death sentence for her. Aviva’s writing reflects a gift for capturing accurately the trials and tribulations of teen relationships through her insightful narration and use of realistic, witty dialogue. She employs a novel technique, often describing scenes alternately from Tia’s, and then Teigan’s, point of view—a process that adds to the reader’s understanding of each character’s unique perspective. As the story unfolds, the reader can’t help but become invested in the lot of the characters and the story’s dramatic conclusion. If you are a fan of young adult fiction—or a fan of science-fiction—you will no doubt find CHiP an intriguing and entertaining read. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

HELPING YOUTH WITH A LITTLE HORSEPOWER There is a new method of healing here in Strathmore! The Spiritual Equine Connection, an equine assisted learning program designed to bring out the best in its participants through horse and teamwork interaction, has set up shop in our town! The Spiritual Equine Connection wants to help participants to feel better about themselves, increase their self confidence and leadership skills and provide them with the inspiration and tools necessary to reach their full potential. Equine Assisted Learning takes place “out of the saddle” and on the ground. Kari Fulmek is a Strathmore local who has started up this exciting new venture, “Equine-Assisted Learning BUILDING BLOCK programs are a powerful journey of learning and understanding.” Says Fulmek, “Horses are used as teaching tools as they immediately respond to what the participant is doing. Facilitators are trained to look for those “teachable moments” that the horses identify through their reactions. Quite simply, the horse does the teaching, facilitators are there to offer the explanation and provide guidance to find a solution.” There are a variety of participants currently enlisted in the program. From the youths at the Siksika Medicine Lodge—a youth centre Page 48

helping teens with solvent abuse issues, to participants from URSA, a rehabilitative program located in Calgary and the elementary schools in Strathmore. The Team Leaders from the Siksika Medicine Lodge have noticed a change in the participants early on in the program. When the youth are “actively engaged with the horses, they become their true self” one leader explained. Discovering one’s self is the true mission of the program. For the corporations who are searching for innovative solutions to enhance your teams effectiveness, we have one day workshop designed to work together and move in the same direction for extraordinary teamwork. Spiritual Equine Connection seeks to assist youth and adults alike with learning about life through horsepower. “Horses are silent communicators; seeking direction on where to go—much like the youth they are helping. Participants get the chance to step up and be a leader, often for the first time in their lives.” said Fulmek. The owner and senior facilitator of Spiritual Equine Connection believes that the program “is a journey that can be so rewarding for these kids. This is an alternative method of learning that thinks outside the class-
room and teaches everyday life skills that are essential in the healing and growth process for participants.” Spiritual Equine Connection is located3 minutes West of Strathmore and has a heated classroom and arena. Experience the benefits with their equine team and "think outside the classroom". There are limited spots available for your youth groups or corporate groups. For more information, please visit

A recent study reported that out of 100 people who set written goals more than 80% of them fail or never accomplish the goal. Why is that? What is the #1 reason why most people fail to get to their goals? Would you believe it that it came down to simply saying one word too often? And that word was ‘YES. We have often heard that the opposite is true. Many current self-help gurus claim, ‘If you want to succeed you must take advantage of opportunities as they come. Say ‘Yes’ when every wonderful opportunity comes your way and you will be blessed with abundance.’The research demonstrates that this is a sure recipe for disaster. Saying ‘Yes’ to too many things divides your focus, your potential and your power until you become a diluted version of yourself. Multitasking with small or big tasks never works. A recent study of office workers found that the average office worker switches tasks on average every three minutes and takes nearly half an hour to get back into the groove with the original task once interrupted.1. The same study found that the tasks that generally interrupted the major and more significant ones were menial and insignificant in nature. The same is true of the larger goals we face in our lives. We sacrifice what we want most for what we want now. Little things distract us from getting the big things done. This is a function of our brain. Our brain is wired to focus more on the things of an emotional or urgent nature rather than the things which we logical know we want and should be doing. John Lennon said it this way, “Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans.Sometimes these distractions are not conscious decisions, they are reactions to what comes up in life. Many times they are conscious decisions where we actually make a commitment to get distracted or overextended. It is this splitting of the focus that I am referring to in the title of this post, ‘Saying YES can ruin your chances of success.’ In order to be successful we must zero-in on the most productive things we can do and say ‘no’ to distractions that keep us from those things. Setting up boundaries and borders can help us keep a clear vision on what we really want. In the film “How Thoughts Become Things we talk about Strategic Cognitive Creation in building our vision of the future.2 The word Strategic is highly important as it is this word that most people are missing in their goal setting and life planning. Strategic suggests that the plan is formulated with a calculated view of the future. Often we do not strategically build our future. We build short term goals or projects to satisfy more immediate needs, but we plan no further. Decisions of this nature do not create a victorious destiny. When we have a strategic game plan of what we want our future to be, we automatically begin to recognize the things that do not fit. People without a plan say Yes to whatever comes along. This matter of boundaries is highly important not only in the achievement of accomplishing our goals of what we want to have in our lives, but it is essential in accomplishing our goals of what we want to be in our lives. Character is formed more by what we choose we will not to do, than the things we will permit. Permitting things to take over our lives is easy, it requires courage to say NO. Too often our character is eroded by the subtle daily distractions that keep us from what we know we should be doing. Or worse, sometimes we permit ourselves to do the things that we know are beneath our best self because for the instant doing the wrong thing gets a quick result. Even the smallest detours can keep us from the traveling the best roads in our lives. When we are careful about what we commit to, what we align ourselves with and what we choose to do we will have the freedom to make better choices in the future. One of the significant challenges for those who say YES too often is that they become so burdened by the trivial that they lose the opportunity to make future choices. Retaining our ability and freedom to choose is at the heart of all successes. When we choose wisely the landscape of our lives we will eventually find ourselves at the destinations which are of highest worth.

SO YOU ARE A VEGETARIAN? Vegetarianism involves the practice of following a diet that includes fruits, vegetables, cereal grains, nuts, and seeds, with or without dairy products or eggs. A vegetarian does not eat meat, including game, poultry, fish, crustacea and shellfish, and may also abstain from byproducts of animal slaughter such as animal-derived rennet and gelatin. Various foods or treats, such as cake, chocolate, chips, gum, marshmallows and gummy candies, often contain unfamiliar animal ingredients, and may especially be a concern for vegetarians due to the likelihood of such additions. While some vegetarians are unaware of animal-derived rennet’s role in the usual production of cheese and may therefore unknowingly consume the ingredient, others of the diet are not bothered by its consumption. Often, however, animal-derived products, such as certain cheeses, gelatin or other animal-derived ingredients, are scrutinized by vegetarians prior to purchase or consumption. Vegetarianism can be adopted for different reasons: in addition to ethical reasons, some reasons for vegetarianism include health, religious, political, cultural, aesthetic or economic. There are also varieties of the diet: an ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs but not dairy products, a lacto-vegetarian diet includes dairy products but not eggs, and an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products. A vegan diet excludes all animal products, such as eggs, dairy, and honey. Semi-vegetarian diets consist largely of vegetarian foods, but may include fish or poultry, or other meats on an infrequent basis. Those with diets containing fish or poultry may define “meat” only as mammalian flesh and may identify with vegetarianism. Admittedly, I could not go without my medium rare yummy scrumptious prime rib roast or steak, but each to their own – so here is the best vegetarian chili recipe for those of you who would rather not eat meat (including our very own Denise!).
VEGETARIAN CHILI

Dear Lifelines: I am happily married, but I just can’t seem to do anything to please my wife right now. I make sure I buy her flowers every week, but it just isn’t enough. What more can I do?! Signed, Desperate to impress “Giving without any thought of receiving is compassion in action, the most powerful and unconditional act of generosity.” Debbie Shapiro
Dear Desperate:
What’s really amazing about people is that everyone is so individual in what they appreciate and need from their mate. While some people need gifts and words of acknowledgement, others appreciate when you do tasks for them or spend quality time with them. When you are able to meet your partner’s needs in those particular departments, the marriage train runs a lot more smoothly. The trick is to find out what her actual needs are. A really wonderful book that would make a great Valentine’s gift this year is the book entitled, The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts by Gary Chapman. In this book there is a short quiz to help determine what your preferred ‘love languages’ are. Perhaps it’s physical touch that your wife is craving and you could send her flowers and gifts until the cows come home and she will not feel satisfied. The belief is that once you discover each other’s ‘love language’ you can anticipate your partner’s needs and create more of a supportive and loving environment for each other. No sense wasting your time and money purchasing things that never come out of the jewellery box if all she really wants is 15 minutes of quality time and your undivided attention at the end of the day. You never know, just throwing a load of laundry into the washer might be just the ticket to make your woman swoon. How challenging is that going to be for you? Play around with your approach and see what happens! Have fun with it. Hopefully it will end up being a win-win situation for both of you. Good luck! Sincerely, Lifelines

A big part of planning for your retirement years, and investing for income in the future, is based on your income-replacement ratio — what you’ll need each year to maintain your desired lifestyle. For years, the rule of thumb has been to plan on needing 70% of your pre-retirement income to live comfortably. But that’s a very general guideline, best used as a starting point only. Depending on your current income and your desired retirement lifestyle, you may need significantly more or significantly less. In addition, your lifestyle — and the income you need to support it — is likely to change over time. Remember, your retirement may easily span 30 years or longer. Assessing your needs To determine your personal income-replacement ratio, you need to consider the following questions. If you’re already retired, answering them will help you see how your needs may change over time. How will you spend your time? If you expect to travel the globe or swing your clubs at every major golf course, you are going to need considerably more than someone who wants a quiet life in the country. In fact, you may need to have an income that’s higher than what you make now. Where will you live? Moving from your current principal residence may have a number of different implications, depending on whether you’re downsizing or moving up. Remember, any capital gain you make on your principal residence is tax-free. If you’re moving up, on the other hand, you may have mortgage payments to factor into your retirement income needs. If you move to a condo, you’ll need to consider the monthly maintenance fees. Are your healthcare costs likely to rise? This is a difficult question to answer with any certainty, but your current health, lifestyle, and family history may help give you an idea. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Will you have any dependants? These days, it’s not unusual for retirees to be providing financial assistance to adult children who have returned home or to aging parents — or to both. Will you or your partner continue to work? Many Canadians choose to work part- or full-time well past the traditional retirement age of 65. Additional income, of course, will have income tax implications and may affect your eligibility for government benefits such as Old Age Security (OAS). Do you want to leave a legacy? Some couples place a high priority on leaving something behind for their children or charity. For others, this may be less of a concern. Your income base Remember, in determining your ratio, some of your income is likely to be supplied by the government, in the form of the Canada or Quebec Pension Plan and OAS. Even if you qualify for the maximum benefits, however, government sources alone may not support you in the lifestyle you want. We can work together to better define your retirement income needs, bridge any gap, and guide your plans to meet your goals. Brought to you by: ATB Investor Services

Five Minute Solutions At Home 1) Post the poison control centre phone number in a prominent place in your bathroom or kitchen, so it’s easy to find in a hurry 2) Shampoo your hairbrush. Use a wide tooth comb to remove any trapped hair. Next soak the brush for a few minutes in a sink with warm water and a few drops of shampoo. Rinse the brush thoroughly, and set it up right to dry. 3) Clean out your medicine cabinet. An overstuff medicine cabinet is a dangerous invitation to take the wrong medicine, or one that has expired. Most important though, don’t dump them down the toilet. Medicines that are dumped in the toilet are one of the reasons our waterways are being polluted by toxic drugs including hormones. Seal the containers tightly, wrap them in duct tape and take them to your county toxic waste disposal or put them into a trash that kids or pets will not be able to get into.

Since the downturn of the economy two years ago, financial institutions and various credit adjudicators have tightened the reins on their lending policies, and in particular, pay much greater attention to an individual’s past credit experience than ever before. Nowhere has this been more evident than in the mortgage industry. With foreclosures at historic levels, most lenders, insurers and their investors have reduced their product offerings, while at the same time, they have placed considerably more emphasis on a client’s credit(beacon) score when making their final decision. With that being said, there are a number of things you should know, not only when it comes to you qualifying for any type of credit request, but also in maintaining a good credit rating in general. Due to the fraudulent activity that is occurring in the world today, it is prudent that you check your credit report on an annual basis to ensure that all account information that is contained in the report is accurate. There are two main credit report providers in Canada; Equifax and Transunion. Each of these providers can be accessed online at www.econsumer.equifax.ca and www.transunion.ca. When applying for credit, it is important that you don’t apply to several different banks or institutions within a short time of each other. Each time you do so, it is referred to as a “hit”, and this may result in your score dropping enough to prevent you from qualifying for that particular credit product. In the case of purchasing a home or refinancing your existing property, it is beneficial to use the services of a mortgage broker as we typically access your credit report once, and supply it to the various financial institutions for review. If you access your own credit report by contacting either Equifax or Transunion directly, this does not represent a “hit” on your file and therefore does not impact your score. In order to get your score as high as possible I would suggest the following. It is best to make at least the minimum payment required for that particular credit card or line of credit each month. If possible, keep your balance(s) at or below 75% of your credit limit(s). In the event that you are either late with a payment or your account has gone to collection, it is vital that you bring the account up to date as soon as possible. You would be amazed how much your score will drop if you are so much as 30 days late on an account regardless of how much or how little that minimum payment required is. The good, the bad and the ugly stay on your credit report for a minimum of six years. In situations where there has either been serious delinquency or a bankruptcy in the past, it can be very difficult to re-establish one’s credit rating. One of the easiest ways to do so however, is to get a cash secured credit card. It is recommended that you get a limit of at least $1500, which means you need to pledge at least that much as security. If you hold the card for a year and continue to make the minimum payment each month, you will find your credit score will go up significantly. This same approach may be used in situations where a client doesn’t have any credit whatsoever. Individuals with no credit history are often viewed in the same light as those clients with bruised or poor credit ratings because there is no previous credit to base their decision upon. CURB APPEAL- The curb ap-
peal of a house could be defined as the magnet which gets your attention when you pass by.
Some people, especially those who contemplate buying or building a home will spend many hours driving through subdivisions hunting for these elusive dwellings with curb appeal. The bolder purveyors of this addiction will take photos of their special finds. Some will even ring the door bell to get a glance at the interior or to get the name of the designer. What gives a house curb appeal? The successful interplay of the landscaping, architectural shapes, textures and colours. Sensitive developers often attempt to create harmonious subdivisions by imposing architectural controls. This rigid imposition of values sometimes backfires and results in a district dulled by monotony. City houses with limited side yards should relate to each other to form a pleasant streetscape, without having the sameness of row housing. Country homes, on the other hand, can be quite unique in their own private setting. They are also more difficult to discover! When it comes to selling your house, curb appeal can be your best marketing tool. Perhaps more artists should be designing houses; after all architecture can and should be three-dimensional art. A Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is by far the most commonly used tax saving strategy for Canadians today. Since Canada employs a system of progressive income taxation, the more we make, the greater a percentage of our income ends up in Ottawa. The federal income tax ranges from 15% for income below $40,970 to a maximum of 29% on income over $127,021. All calculations below include an additional 10% to account for the Provincial flat income tax. It is crucial to understand this progressive system of taxation in order to optimize RRSPs as a tax savings tool. Every dollar you put into your RRSP reduces your income, so just as higher income earners pay a greater rate of tax, their RRSP contributions save them more. As an example, if my income is $37,000 and I buy $1,000 in RRSPs, I will save $250 in tax. But if my income was $137,000, the same $1,000 purchase would get me back $390. As you may know, putting money in an RRSP only defers income tax until your retirement years. Still, since most of us will make less money in retirement than we do in our prime earning years, we can often deduct RRSP contributions at 32% - 39% and pay the tax on it later at 25%. However, the real power of using an RRSP is the compounded growth of the investments without being subject to tax. Suppose you invested $10,000 today at 8% return and let it grow in an RRSP for 30 years. You’d have $100,626.60. Even if you cashed it out that day and paid 39% tax on the whole thing, you’d have $61,382.21 left. Outside the RRSP, the same investment would be worth only $41,761.91 if you were taxed each year in the 39% tax bracket! This suggests some simple strategies to make the most of our RRSP contributions. The higher income spouse should be making the contributions in order to maximize refunds to the family. Folks earning over $40,970 save more for each dollar of RRSPs purchased. Buying RRSPs will even increase your Child Tax Benefits! As with almost all things in tax planning, the short answer to what’s optimal is, “It depends!” You should always seek the advice of a tax professional to make sure a given strategy is best for YOU. Natural mood lifters. 1. Eat smaller portions and more often. When you eat at regular intervals throughout the day you will prevent dips in your blood sugar that can negatively affect your mood. 2. Limit refined carbohydrates such as soda, candy, cookies, and white flour, which are concentrated sources of sugar. These foods give you an immediate rush of energy, but they will cause you to crash and fatigue soon after. 3. Eat foods rich in omega-3 fats. These foods have been shown to lift moods and can possibly alleviate depression. 4. Ramp up your B-12 and folate (folic acid). Scientists believe these nutrients help the body produce a neurotransmitter called serotonin—a known mood stabilizer. 5. Get your daily dose of exercise. Whether it’s a formal session at the gym, a walk with the dog, or just playing with your kids, getting up and moving will boost your mood and energy level. 6. Stick to a regular sleep schedule. Although most adults require between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night, you might need slightly more or less to function optimally. 7. Go outside and breathe in the fresh air. Take a break! 8. Listen to your favourite music.Turn on your favorite tunes and sing . 9. Do something fun. Whether it’s reading a novel or having lunch with your friend, take a well-deserved break and do something you love. 10. Play with your pet. Just petting your dog or cat has been shown to lower blood pressure and evoke a sense of calmness, happiness and well-being. 11. Volunteer. There is nothing like the act of giving to those in need to make you feel appreciative of your life. 12. Fake it till you make it. THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY February is the shortest month of the year, having only 28 days, but it has 29 days in a leap year, which happens only when the year number is divisible by four. It is the only month of the year that can pass without a single full moon. If you were born before February 20th, you are an Aquarius and after the 20th you are a Pisces. The birthstone for the month is an amethyst and the flower is the Primrose. The 2nd day of February is Ground Hog Day and the superstition is that the cute, sleepy little groundhog comes out of his burrow and if he sees his shadow, he will go back to sleep and winter will continue but if he doesn’t see his shadow, spring time will begin! So hope for a cloudy day on February 2nd! February seems to be the natural candidate for the Worst Month of the Year Award. The month makes it feel like winter will go on forever and it only has one holiday, which is Family Day on February 21st. The skies are gray and it’s either slushy or cold and snowing – it is a blessing it is the shortest month! There are some funny holidays in February, though: the 7th is Wave All Your Fingers at Your Neighbour Day, and the 11th is Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day! The 16th is Do a Grouch a Favour Day and the 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day (so do something special like bake some cookies for a friend, take some baking to an old folks home, take a friend out for lunch or just call someone who is lonely). Over the years, some exceptional things have happened in February. France surrendered Canada to Great Britain by the Treaty of Paris on February 10, 1763. Did you know France use to own us?! On February 1st, 1949 RCA released its 1st record ever. Wow, we have certainly come a long way since then; now you can walk around with thousands of songs on one little device that fits into your pocket! In 1957, the first portable typewriter went on sale in New York and now we have computers! On February 5th, 1663, Canada felt its first recorded Earthquake in the Charlevoix, Quebec region near the mouth of the Saguenay River. In the past 350 years, this has been one of Canada’s most active seismic regions, with five earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater. The 1663 earthquake had an estimated magnitude of close to 7, and caused major landslides along the St. Lawrence River and several of its tributaries. Nearly 600 kilometres away in Boston, items were knocked off shelves and chimneys were damaged. Did you know that each year, there are more than 3500 earthquakes in or near Canada, more than half of these occurring in British Columbia and the neighbouring Pacific Ocean? Since most earthquakes are very small and many occur in unpopulated areas, only about 50 earthquakes each year are reported by the Canadian public. Most earthquakes that can be felt are too small or too remote to cause damage. In the entire twentieth century, only about 20 earthquakes have caused significant damage in this country. We all know Canada is the best place to live and we are pretty lucky to live in such a wonderful province. So enjoy the month of February and remember how lucky you are to By: Kathryn Hartwell live in Alberta!

MORE BABY BRAIN GAMES
Why play games with you baby?
Playing games is always enjoyable - for babies and their parents and allows opportunities for shared experiences, bonding, and trust building.
Babies recognize their own names by about six months, and they will notice it being spoken even in an adult-level conversation. Hearing their name encourages your baby to pay attention to what you’re saying, even if you are not speaking directly to them. That’s not Daddy game. This is best for babies 12 months or more. Have Daddy hide for your baby to spot. Bring your baby around the house looking for Daddy. Point to the sofa and say, “That’s not Daddy!” Repeat a few times until you find Daddy, then announce, “There’s Daddy!”
Sing it in Different ways as early as 3 months. Babies respond to singing, babies learn through repetition, and they pay attention to novelty. By singing, you’ll keep your baby’s attention while reinforcing words.
The “What it’s like” game is good for 10 months. Show your baby a favourite object, such as a stuffed animal. Tell your baby about it, using gestures. “This is your stuffed bear. Look at his brown eyes [pointing to the eyes]. See how his legs wiggle? [moving his legs] Feel how soft his fur is [place baby’s hand on the stuffed bear]. What a soft bear.”
Your baby’s expressive language takes longer to develop than their receptive language, and they probably won’t say their first recognizable word until about 12 months, but you can encourage it from the very beginning. The “Blowing” game is good for 6-9 months. Helping your baby learn to manipulate their mouth, lips and tongue makes it easier for them to learn to speak. Demonstrate blowing your breath out and encourage your baby to imitate you. Blow onto their hand or cheek so they can feel the air coming out of your mouth. Blow on a pin wheel to make it spin.
Ask questions about what your baby thinks. When your changing the diaper, ask, “Is Ayrn’s diaper wet?”. Wait for an answer even if they don’t give you one. Then say. “Aryn’s diaper IS wet!” You are modeling responses.
It may seem to take a long time for your baby to say their first word, but soon enough they will be saying plenty of words. Make sure to track their progress. This will help you and them to see the development and growth and how fast it is happening.
