The dental assistant had borrowed our teeth, And from them she'd crafted a holiday wreath. The bed pans, so shiny, all stood in a row, Reflecting our candle's magnificent glow. Our supper, so festive (the joy wouldn't stop), Was creamy warm oatmeal with sprinkles on top. Our salad was Jell-O, so jiggly and great; Then puree of fruitcake was spooned on each plate. The social director then had us play games, Like "Where Are You Living?" and "What Are Your Names?" Old Grandfather Looper was feeling his oats, Proclaiming that reindeer were nothing but goats. Our resident wanderer was tied to her chair, In hopes that at bedtime she still would be there.
Twas the Night Before (Senior) Christmas 'Twas the night before Christmas at Rock-Away Rest, And all of us seniors were looking our best. Our glasses, how sparkly, our wrinkles, how merry; Our punch bowl held prune juice plus three drops of sherry.
And soon we were snuggling deep in our beds While nurses distributed nocturnal meds. And so ends our Christmas at Rock-Away Rest. 'Fore long you'll be with us. We wish you the best!
Our grandkids had sent us some Christmassy crafts, Like angels in snowsuits and penguins on rafts. thenewsyneighbour.com
A strange little fellow flew in through the door, Then tripped on the sill and fell flat on the floor. 'Twas just our director, all togged out in red. He jiggled and chuckled and patted each head. We knew from the way that he strutted and jived Our Social Security checks had arrived. We sang -- how we sang -- in our monotone croak, Till the clock tinkled out its soft eight-p.m. stroke.
A bed sock was taped to each walker in hope, That Santa would bring us soft candy and soap. We surely were lucky to be there with friends, Secure in this residence and in our Depends.

After receiving The Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Award for Best Bakery in 2016, I spoke with The Newsy Neighbour staff to thank them for what they did for my small business – creating local awareness and increased traffic. It still sounds rehearsed, and I wish people could hear what I say about it – the emotion [ just] comes out. [It] was a heartfelt thank you because you had no idea what you did for me as a small business. It meant so much to me that so many people came in to check out My Bakery Shop and then vote for us! ~ My Bakery Shop, Langdon

DIY HOMEMADE LIQUEURS FOR CHRISTMAS Now is the time to start thinking about making your perfect Christmas liqueurs to serve at your special Christmas parties. You can pur-
chase unique and pretty bottles at the dollar store or the farmers market or wherever you can find them – and what a great gift for family and friends. I have made the Kahlua in the past and it was wonderfully delicious. I’m thinking this year I just might make them all!!
A maretto Thanks to Diane Peacock
5 cups sugar 4 cups water 4 teaspoons instant coffee crystals 4 teaspoons vanilla extract 1-ounce almond extract 4 ounces crème de cacao 2 cups 190 proof pure grain alcohol (such as Everclear) Combine sugar and water. Then add vanilla extract, almond extract, crème de cacao and alcohol. Pour into decanters. Makes 2 - 3 fifths.
Irish Cream 1 can (15 ounces) sweetened condensed milk [such as Eagle Brand] 1 milk can of half-and-half 2 cups Irish whiskey 1 egg 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup [such as Hershey's] 3 teaspoons almond extract In blender, combine condensed milk, half-and-half, Irish whiskey, egg, chocolate syrup and almond extract. The Christmas season is upon us – lights are twinkling, carols are sounding and snowflakes are falling! It really is a wonderful time of year full of winter fun, cozy warmth and family gatherings. But of course, during the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s important to re-
member a few safety points this holiday season, specifically pertaining to our furry friends! Strings of lights, garland and tinsel all adorn our Christmas trees, and they are especially enticing for puppies and kitties in the household. Cats particularly love to play with all of these – you can imagine a Christmas tree is the ultimate toy! Keep in mind that if pets chew on strands of lights, electricity can cause severe burns of the mouth. Tinsel and garland can potentially become ingested, causing blockages in the GI tract. Due to these risks, it’s important to keep decorations up and away from playful pets. As we sit down to Christmas dinner, it might mean that in some families our pets join us too, even if it’s just sneaking a crumb or two from under the table. To keep Fido happy and healthy, consider an alternative to the foods that we eat at the table, and avoid supper scraps and plate licking altogether. Unbeknownst to many, fatty foods like ham, gravy and turkey skins can cause extreme intestinal upset in animals, potentially resulting in a life-threatening condition called pancreatitis. Not only that, but some foods are actually considered toxic to pets such as grapes, raisins, chocolate, macadamia nuts, onions and garlic. By keeping human foods away and offering pet friendly treats instead, you may just avoid a visit to the Animal ER.
All Natural Hand-crafted Non Toxic
So get out there and enjoy the holiday season, and know that we are here to answer any questions or concerns. Have a safe, happy and healthy Christmas! ~From the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore Team

EXTREME COLD WEATHER DANGERS FOR ANIMALS The Humane Society recognizes that most pet owners are responsible during extreme cold weather; however, sometimes a person does not realize just how dangerous it can be for an animal left outside in the winter without proper shelter. The EHS has produced this reminder notice for the public to download from the Society’s website and use to anonymously leave on a property where a person feels that an animal MAY be in danger of suffering this season.
COLD WEATHER GUIDELINES DOGS:
• If you have an outdoor dog, provide it with an insulated doghouse with straw bedding; NOT a blanket. Blankets absorb moisture that will cause the blanket to freeze. • Elderly animals, young puppies, small-breed dogs, and dogs with short hair should never be left outside for extended periods of time during cold or wet weather. It may be necessary to paper-train pup-
pies inside during cold temperatures. • Dogs should never be allowed off-leash on snow or ice, as this can increase their chance of becoming lost and suffering from hypothermia or frostbite. • Outdoor dogs require energy for warmth and should be fed an increased supply of food with plenty of protein. Provide fresh water in a non-metal dish, as a dog’s tongue can easily freeze to the metal. Snow is not a satisfactory substitute for water.
CATS:
• Cats’ bodies are not designed for low temperatures - keep your cat inside.
BOTH DOGS & CATS:
• Never leave pets alone in a vehicle during cold weather. A vehicle can act as a refrigerator in the winter by holding in the cold. The companion animal can then freeze to death. If the car is left running, pets could die from breathing in carbon monoxide. Also, pets can be stolen from unattended vehicles. If our Animal Protection Officers are called to investigate and find that an animal is in distress without proper shelter, food, or water – an animal can be seized and charges laid against the owner under the Animal Protection Act of Alberta. CHRISTMAS AND CRANBERRIES Well, you just never know what you’re going to find by accident when you are looking for interesting articles to write about. I was looking for Christmas stuff for our December Issue and also looking for wonderful Christmas Recipes because we get the greatest number of comments about our jokes (good and bad) and our recipes! I did cover Cranberries in my book (Fruits & Vegetables, which would make a VERY WONDERFUL Christmas! Hint hint!) but I just could not help writing another article on this incredible little berry. So, here are some interesting facts and some super delectable recipes just in time for Christmas! Cranberries are a native North American fruit. Aboriginals, who had been consuming cranberries for hundreds, or perhaps thousands of years, introduced cranberries to the early settlers. I wonder if they knew that cranberries have five times the antioxidant content of broccoli, which means they may protect against cancer, stroke and heart disease. Cranberries have a special combination of phenolic antioxidants, proanthocyanidin antioxidants, anthocyanin antioxidants, flavonoid antioxidants, and triterpenoid antioxidants. Also unique is the particular combination of three antioxidant nutrients—resveratrol, piceatannol, and pterostilbene. Dietary consumption of cranberries have also been shown to reduce the risk of chronic, unwanted inflammation in the stomach, large intestine (colon) and cardiovascular system (especially blood vessel linings). This “superberry” should most definitely have a place on your Christmas table this year. And, now the good part! Christmas cranberry recipes!
Wishing Everyone A Wonderful Holiday Season.

One of my most favourite Christmas treats in the world would have to be “Toffee,” although I never eat it anymore because it could pull out the fillings in my teeth! But, the most glorious thing happened: I actually found a recipe that will not cause that problem and it is just so wonderfully fabulous you have to hide it from yourself because you cannot stop eating it. It is unbelievably easy, no-fuss, homemade toffee recipe.
All you need is: 1 cup raw almonds 1 cup unsalted butter, cubed 1 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup pecans

I used a knife to cut the toffee into uniform shapes and immediately bagged it for my Christmas gift giving. I knew if I did not bag and freeze, there would be none left to share (trust me). It is sweet but also healthy at the same time (with all those almonds and pecans how can it not be healthy??!!)
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Spread almonds in an even layer on the prepared baking sheet. Place into oven and bake until toasted, about 10 minutes; set aside. I used almonds and pecans because I love them both. In a medium saucepan, combine butter, sugar vanilla and salt over medium heat. Cook, whisking constantly, until butter has melted and mixture is almond brown in colour, about 10-15 minutes, or until your arm feels like they are going to fall off! Immediately spread the hot caramel mixture evenly over the almonds. Sprinkle with chocolate chips. After 1-2 minutes, spread the chocolate chips in an even layer until smooth. Let cool completely, about 2 hours then break into pieces.
Did you know that in addition to healthy fats and vitamin E, a quarter-cup of almonds contains 62 mg of magnesium plus 162 mg of potassium? When there is enough magnesium around, veins and arteries breathe a sigh of relief and relax, which lessens resistance and improves the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Studies show that a deficiency of magnesium is not only associated with heart attack but that immediately following a heart attack, lack of sufficient magnesium promotes free radical injury to the heart and potassium, an important electrolyte involved in nerve transmission and the contraction of all muscles including the heart, is another mineral that is essential for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. Almonds promote your cardiovascular health by providing 162 mg of potassium and only 0.2 mg of sodium, making almonds an especially good choice to in protecting against high blood pressure and atherosclerosis.
So, there you have it! Toffee that is actually healthy for you; isn’t life wonderful! Merry Christmas Kathryn Hartwell

Going With The Flow Last month, after a hot summer and lovely fall, we woke up to find winter had arrived. I love the first snow fall. The quiet and beauty of the snow falling, creating soft pillows on the sharp edges of the world. Such a visual delight to mark so profoundly the shifting of the seasons. Winter feels like a slowing down of the pace of life. An opportunity to enjoy the warmth and comfort of our homes, and to take a rest along with the garden. To bundle up warm and breathe in the cold winter air, to play in the snow and enjoy our winter activities. My husband, however, dislikes winter. A lot. And I know that at some point I, too, will tire of our long cold night. Whence came the inspiration for these thoughts: Because of the summer and fall, we can appreciate winter's energy. Because of winter, we delight in the green blush of spring. Each season brings its own blessings. If we wallow in grief for the season that has passed, we will surely miss the beauty within the one we are in.

With the changing of the seasons, we are constantly reminded that nothing stays the same. I find great comfort in knowing that spring is bound to return. That comfort lets me weather the challenges of winter: We may rail against the onset of winter. We may be beyond tired of scraping our windshields every morning, or the sun setting before we are home from work. But we know that a green spring is inevitable, and knowing that helps. “This too shall pass”, right?

There are seasons in human life too. Times of growth or change, times that are joyful, times of sadness, or creativity, or rest. There are days when we love our life, and days when we wish we could change it all. Think of this: We do not try to change or delay the onset of winter, because we know that this is just what happens – seasons change. Maybe we can go with the flow of our life better, by knowing that life is a series of changing energy, just like winter, spring, summer and fall.
Namaste, Becky
Enjoy your winter, your holiday season, for it is here only for a short time. This time will surely pass, and come around again. I will watch for you and we can count our blessings together.
Just like nature's shifting is inevitable, life will never stay static. We cannot cling to our favourite season and keep it forever, no matter how much we may want to. We cannot change that change will come. Life's seasons. Let us count our blessings right now, and choose to be present in each moment. We can choose to not worry about what we can’t get to (so many things, not enough time, you know), because it is simply not the season for it. We need not grieve for seasons past. And when the energy of life shifts and it is time for a new season, we can go with the flow. Because a flow is what it is. These days, in addition to having much more family time, I am setting up a new schedule and teaching much yoga. I have

Happy December! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Hello to all, Larry here… the countdown is now on. Another year comes to a close and the treat at the end of the year is almost here. CHRISTMAS!!! A time of loving and giving and spending time with those that mean the most to you. A time of thinking about what the new year will bring. A time of making resolutions, which usually include living a healthier and happier life. A wonderful time for most of us. Roger and I have decided to just keep plugging along, what we are doing seems to be working. We will continue to find ways to be better, healthier diabetics. Moving forward, we will keep our eyes open for great diabetic-friendly recipes for you. Christmas is a hard time for diabetics, because the festivities always seems to revolve around food and beverage. GIFT BASKET IDEAS FOR DIABETICS Have you ever wanted to send someone with diabetes a gift basket only to feel stumped? Traditional gift baskets are typically chock full of carbohydrate rich foods, such as sweet treats, candies, and cookies—items that aren't always diabetes friendly. And many of the gift baskets on the market that are geared towards people with diabetes are filled with medical items, diabetes-related books or food products that say "diabetes" and "sugar-free." Studies have shown that eating a small amount of cacao found in dark chocolate may have a beneficial effect on blood pressure, insulin resistance, and vascular and platelet function. Choose dark chocolate with a high percentage of cacao. Look for a high percentage (over 75 percent) with no added sugar. Make sure to check the carbohydrate grams per serving. People with diabetes often aim for 15 g of carbohydrate per serving.

bohydrates. Studies have shown that nut consumption can reduce the risk of heart disease and maybe even lower cholesterol. Nuts such as pistachios, also take a long time to eat so they tend to serve as a great snack. Nuts should be unsalted and portion controlled. If possible, portion them out yourself or purchase single-serve baggies. One serving of nuts is about 1/4 of a cup or one small handful.

Give the Gift of Christmas Magic with These Ideas
Christmas is filled with magic from tiny elves with pointy ears to flying reindeer with clever names to a jolly old man who delivers gifts to children all around the world. This day commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and is celebrated each and every year. Whether or not you honor the day with a visit to church, you can still enjoy the holiday magic that it provides. Here are a few ideas to experience the magic of Christmas this year by giving to the people around you.
Hostess Gifts
If you receive invitations to holiday parties, bring the hostess an unusual gift. Rather than opting for the traditional bottle of wine or basket of holiday cookies, why not bring a book of holiday poems or a snow globe filled with holiday cheer?
Elderly Neighbours
While they might have their own families who intend to visit, elderly neighbours may not receive many visitors, regardless of the time of year. Consider organizing a singing group to serenade your elderly neighbours with Christmas carols. Instead of expecting a cup of hot chocolate for your efforts, bring along a picnic basket filled with freshly baked cookies and a thermos of chocolatey goodness.
Food Pantries
Keeping the local food pantry full is a year-long effort. During the holidays,
however, the pantry cupboards begin to empty out quickly. Since you know other people will contribute items from the pantry's request list of turkey, cranberries, and stuffing mix, consider donating unusual items. Things to consider include ready-to-eat puddings, Christmas cookies, chewing gum, candy canes, and treats for the pets.
Local Schools
Whether the school is private or public in nature, funds are often limited. Consider calling up the principal and asking if you can donate money that can be used to purchase candy canes for all of the children. Other items that might be just as appreciated by the kids include holiday pencils or colouring books.
Local Animal Shelters
What could be lonelier for abandoned pups and kittens than to spend a few weeks in the local animal shelter? If you have the room, adopt a new pet. Not only will the staff at the shelter rejoice, but your family will love you for it.
The Homeless
Whether you live in a city or in a rural area, you are likely to kWhether you live in a city or in a rural area, you are likely to know of an area where the homeless spend their time. Gather up unwanted blankets, coats, gloves, hats, boots, and socks and bring them to these individuals to help keep them warm and comfortable throughout the long winter. Alternatively, you might want to consider donating to the local soup kitchen to bring the warmth of the holiday to those who are struggling to survive. Christmas is a time for many things, including reflection, praying, sharing, laughing, singing, loving, eating, and being merry. If you love this magical season, why not make it even more enjoyable by coming up with ways to share the holiday spirit. Share what you have, give what you can, and embrace your ability to do so.

Cookies, Muffins & Hugs Gift: A thing given willingly to someone without expectation of payment It is commonly known that Christmas is the time of year when retail sales are the highest as millions (make that multiple billions) of gifts are purchased and put under the Christmas tree for family, friends and those experiencing challenging times. It is also the time of year when over 5 million litres of eggnog is consumed by Canadians and 7 million poinsettias are produced to give our homes a festive feel. Monthly candy and snack food sales increase by more than $100 million in December, while sales of exercise and fitness equipment are at their highest in December and January. Hmmmm... interesting coincidence. When I think of Christmas, I remember my Grandma busy in the kitchen making sure that she had everyone’s favourite cookies

available when the family was together. She made the traditional desserts too but it is the plate of cookies I remember. It was a plate of love. When I had a family of my own, I baked a lot of muffins, often making several different kinds in one day to be sure everyone had their favourite in the freezer. My muffins were like my grandma’s cookies; they were a way to show my love for family and friends. Perhaps this is why for several years I have offered to pay for a variety of goods and services in cookies and muffins. I say it with a smile and while it often evokes laughter and a jovial acceptance, few have taken me up on this very real (and delicious) offer. I suppose they don’t recognize that those cookies and muffins are not just baked goods, they are full of appreciation and love. One thing I regularly offer that most people do accept are hugs. In addition to family and friends, I have been known to hug people I’ve just met, store clerks who go out of their way to be helpful and firemen who come to the rescue after I’ve called 911. Hugs seem to be a commodity that is widely accepted and I am very grateful that the gift of a hug is in fashion all year round and not just at Christmas. The other day, I told the insurance adjuster for my house fire that she is my early Christmas gift. Not because she did anything extraordinary or super human, but because she is always there to answer my questions and hear my concerns. She is compassionate and real and she cares, and for that she is a true gift. The next time I see her, she is getting cookies and a hug. There are hugs every month at Women Talk too, as new friends and old gather together to share their real stories of courage and inspiration amidst much laughter and light-hearted conversation. Last month, a woman shared her touching story of homelessness and how her biggest supporter said to her, “All you need is a hug and a safe place to fall. I am those things for you.” Another woman told us how she is using her decades of experience with anxiety and pure obsessive disorder to help people manage stress using humour, and to remind them that challenges can be used to grow stronger. We also heard how important it is to find the fun in the moments that seem heavy and that when we are a light that brightens up the world for the people around us, our own light shines brighter. While my house is being rebuilt, I am in a beautiful rental home and today I met one of the neighbours. She remembered me from a recent Women Talk she came to and she said, “There are so many possibilities for women at Women Talk. It’s a great place to share, grow and make new friends.” That sounds like a wonderful gift… and did I mention that hugs are also available? Join us each month in Strathmore and discover the gifts that are waiting for you. Gifts that come from hearts full of love. Letter to Santa from Mom Dear Santa, I've been a good mom all year. I've fed, cleaned and cuddled my two children on demand, visited the doctor's office more than my doctor, sold sixty-two cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground and figured out how to attach nine patches onto my daughter's girl scout sash with staples and a glue gun. I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my son's red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when I'll find any more free time in the next 18 years. Here are my Christmas wishes: I'd like a pair of legs that don't ache after a day of chasing kids (in any colour, except purple, which I already have) and arms that don't flap in the breeze but are strong enough to carry a screaming toddler out of the candy aisle in the grocery store. I'd also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy. If you're hauling big ticket items this year I'd like a car with fingerprint-resistant windows and a radio that only plays adult music, a television that doesn't broadcast any programs containing talking animals, and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone. On the practical side, I could use a talking daughter doll that says, "Yes, Mommy" to boost my parental confidence, along with one potty-trained toddler, two kids who don't fight and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools. I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting, "Don't eat in the living room" and 'Take your hands off your brother,' because my voice seems to be just out of my children's hearing range and can only be heard by the dog. And please don't forget
the Playdoh Travel Pack, the hottest stocking stuffer this year for mothers of preschoolers. It comes in three fluorescent colours and is guaranteed to crumble on any carpet, making the in-laws' house seem just like mine. If it's too late to find any of these products, I'd settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning, or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container. If you don't mind, I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season. Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely. It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family, or if my toddler didn't look so cute sneaking downstairs to eat contraband ice cream in his pyjamas at midnight. Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think he wants his crayon back. Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the chimney and come in and dry off by the fire so you don't catch a cold. Help yourself to cookies on the table but don't eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet.
Yours Always... Mom

5 Things You Should Know Before Attempting To Drive Drunk Millions of people annually find themselves in a situation where they have had too much to drink. The majority of them will at least contemplate whether or not it would be safe for them to drive home, but the fact is that it is never safe to drive when you are intoxicated. Even if you are only slightly buzzed, your reflexes will be stunted and you will present a danger to other motorists and yourself. It is never worth the risk to drive while you are drunk, but if you still feel tempted to, then you should closely consider the following five points before you get behind the wheel:

Drunk Drivers Kill People – Thousands of people die each year in Canada as a result of a drunk driver. If you choose to drive while you are intoxicated, you are literally taking the lives of everyone else on the road into your own hands. Not only is everyone else around you at risk, but you also run the risk of killing yourself. If you do not want to spend the rest of your life in jail or end up at the county morgue, then you should put your keys away when you are drunk.

You Could Lose Your Job - A DUI conviction can cause
you to lose your job, especially if you are required to drive as a condition of your employment. Not only will you be dealing with exorbitant legal fees, but you might have to do so without being employed. This scenario could ruin your financial life and cause you to file for bankruptcy.
Your Insurance Rates Will Go Up - Most insurance companies have a clause that allows them to either raise your rates or cancel your policy if you are convicted of a DUI. If you lose your policy, then it will be extremely difficult to find a new insurance company that is willing to sign you to a new one. Your Personal Relationships will Suffer - The strain
of dealing with the financial and social implications of a DUI is often too much for a couple to deal with. If you have children, you will also have to deal with both their disappointment and the issue of setting a bad example.

A DUI is Expensive - Even if you have never been convicted
of a DUI before, you can expect to pay at the very least $1000.00 up to $5000.00 - plus, a criminal conviction, a criminal record, a three (3) month pre-trial driving suspension; a Federal one (1) year driving prohibition; a Provincial one (1) year driving suspension to run concurrently (at the same time) as the Federal driving prohibition; Skyrocketing of Insurance; Loss of Job? Travel problems? Many people will say that it is too expensive to take a taxi home, especially if they will have to take another taxi ride in the morning to pick up their vehicle, but at least you will not have a criminal record!
From oil changes, tires, and maintenance to engine performance, chips & lift kits. We take care of your ride to make sure you stay on the road!

Santa’s Wish A man was walking along one day and found a Jack-in-the-Box lying in the street. He looked around and didn't see anyone who might have dropped it, so he decided to turn the handle and open the Jack-in-the-Box. All of a sudden, Santa appeared and thanked the man for letting him out of the box. Santa said, "I am so grateful to get out of that crazy Jack-in-the-Box, that I will grant you a wish. BUT, I can only grant one at this time of year. I have SO many wishes to grant." The man thought for a while and finally said, "I have always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I've never been able to go because I cannot stand flying in an airplane, and boats tend to make me claustrophobic. So for my wish, I want a road to be built to Hawaii." Santa thought about the road for a few minutes and finally said, "No, I don't think I can do that. Just think of all the work involved. Consider all the piling needed to hold up a highway and how deep they would have to go to reach the bottom of the ocean. Just imagine all of the pavement needed. No, I'm sorry, but that is just too much to ask." The man thought for a few minutes and then decided on his second choice. The man said, "There IS one other thing I have always wanted. I would like to be able to understand women. What makes them laugh and cry, why they are temperamental, and why they can be so difficult to get along with. Basically, I'd like to know what makes them tick." Santa pondered the request for a moment, and finally said, "So, do you want two lanes or four?" facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Your Own Christmas Traditions
always the same — pajamas. The kids always know what it is, but it’s still fun to see what kind of jammies they’ll don on Christmas morning. - The day before Christmas, deliver cookies to those who have to work, like firefighters, policemen or nurses at the hospital. It’s a small, simple way to cheer up their day when they would probably rather be with family than at work.
It seems that somewhere along the way, the holiday message has been lost and replaced by materialistic attitudes that are of more concern than the joy surrounding the Christmas holiday.
- Choose an ornament for each child, each year until they leave the home. See if you can have the ornament reflect something about the child’s personality, an accomplishment they achieved that year, or something else unique. Then, when they leave your home and start their own, let them take their box of ornaments with them.
Christmas has now become a massive marketing event where companies can advertise their products as a must-have Christmas gift. Isn’t it funny how all the newest and biggest stuff comes out at Christmas time so that the masses of children will demand it from their parents? It would be good to see the old traditions return and for Christmas to be celebrated for the right reasons; not as a commercial opportunity.
The most important part of family traditions are to keep them simple, keep them lighthearted, and keep them fun. Their purpose is family unity. Often these are the things children remember most; not the gifts. Children enjoy and value time with their family a lot more than materialistic presents. These can become traditions for all the family, and children will often carry these with them when they in turn have their own families in years to come.
Christmas Traditions are so important; we have many family traditions. Some of them have fallen aside over the years as the kids have grown up, but I hope they will continue with their own children. We used to always read “The Night Before Christmas” on Christmas Eve. We always decorated the tree together. We always watch the “Grinch” (I still do every year, even if I’m alone!). We always have grandma’s best-in-the-universe butter tarts, and we still buy the chocolate Advent calendars. I still try to drag my children to the mall to have a picture with Santa… maybe this year I will try to drag them all there together – wouldn’t that be fun?! We always have the stockings stuffed with little funny things, chocolates and just ‘stuff’, and it’s just not Christmas if we don’t have Christmas crackers! And everyone has to wear the funny hats at the dinner table. Having family traditions are so much fun! Here are some ideas to start your own, and I think I’m going to add these to my family traditions! - Pajama Time on Christmas Eve. Many families have a fun tradition of opening one present on Christmas Eve, and that present is
- Bake cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve. What a wonderful family tradition! And besides, Santa needs milk and cookies – that’s a known fact.

Sudoku The Rules of Sudoku might help your brain stay The classic Sudoku game involves a grid of 81 squares. The grid is healthy. divided into nine blocks, each containing nine squares. The rules of the game are simple: each of the nine blocks has to contain all the numbers 1-9 within its squares. Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box. The difficulty lies in that each vertical nine-square column, or horizontal nine-square line across, within the larger square, must also contain the numbers 1-9, without repetition or omission. Christmas Table Games If you're getting everyone together for Christmas dinner, you may want to provide some fun activities and games in addition to just the meal. Here are some good ideas to keep the crowd in the Christmas mood and keep them busy and diverted until the meal is ready. Guess the Dinner Have everyone who is not working in the kitchen do a smell test and try to figure out what's on the menu for dinner. Sure, turkey or ham or roast beef might be an obvious choice and an easy one if they are traditional in your family, but what's the potato smell? Is it a hashed brown casserole, or baked potatoes? Are they mashed with sour cream or garlic? Are there Brussel sprouts for dinner or squash, or both? The winner, or the person who most closely guesses the items on the menu, gets a taste test. Board Game Fun Bring out the most kid-like board game you have. This might be
one that was just opened that morning or something you already have. Get the men in the house (not the boys, but grown men) to sit down on the floor and play the game. A great picture can be had when the fathers and grandfathers are on the living room rug playing Candyland or Chutes and Ladders. Better yet, bring out a princess game and enjoy watching the men get dressed up like princesses as the game goes on. As a secondary activity, pit the kids and dads against each other in a game of monopoly or cards. The kids can play with their dads on a team or the dads can play against the kids. Either way, it's sure to be fun. Tablecloth If the children are getting restless waiting for the meal, have them decorate the tablecloth. This isn't the time, then, to put great Aunt Martha's tablecloth on the table, but something inexpensive and yet not disposable. You can keep the tablecloth from year to year and enjoy watching the progression of the children's art through the tablecloth. Be sure to have them use permanent markers and have them date and sign it, if they are old enough. If they're not, date and sign it for them. You'll want that bit of information later. Outdoor Fun Have a fun game of "toss the hat". Fill Santa's hat with some candy or other small items and try to toss the hat around without the items falling out. You can have a relay with Santa's hat where everyone wears Santa's hat, then hands it to the next person, who has to put it on and then take if off and then hand it to the next person. How about a rousing game of football, where the goal line is made of discarded Christmas ribbon? Or a game of soccer where the soccer ball is a rolled up ball of discarded Christmas paper? Worst Presents Who has the best story about the worst present they ever got? Before dessert have everyone share their best of the worst stories. Be sure that you don't tell the story in front of the person who gave you the worst present! What was the most interesting present you ever got? Or the best handmade present? What was the best present that came this Christmas? Dessert isn't handed out until everyone shares a story, good or bad. Where's Santa? While eating dinner, have a fun activity going on that's sure to delight the children. Using a Santa hat, play a game of "Where's Santa?" Surely he's back at the North Pole by now, right? Have someone start with the Santa hat and under the table, that person passes it to someone else. Everyone tries to decide where the hat is. Whoever has the hat (they can keep it in their lap while they eat) winks at someone else when they catch their eye. If someone gets winked at, they say, "Santa's lost!" and this continues, with the passing of the hat and the winking, until someone figures out where Santa is.

225C Wheatland Trail, Strathmore Steven currently lives in Strathmore, but is originally from Newfoundland. At 25-years old, his passions in life are playing guitar, writing motivational stories and just writing in general. He’s a very positive and outgoing person who loves to watch football. Steven has Spina Bifida and is confined to a wheelchair, but his ultimate goal in life is to inspire people to be more positive, as positivity is one of my philosophies in life. Overall, Steven is just an average guy looking to make a difference in the world!
Giving Thanks for Christmas Christmas. The time of year where friends and families get together, open up gifts, have turkey dinner and enjoy each other’s company. Now, with my family being from Newfoundland, it’s pretty much go big or go home when it comes to Christmas dinner, and we like our dinner BIG! Aside from the turkey, our dinner usually consists of your basic veggies (carrots, potatoes, turnip etc.) alongside bread pudding and pea pudding, which are traditional Newfoundland side dishes. When it comes to the holiday season, I sometimes feel that people often forget that not everybody has it as good as we do. There are so many families in the world that are either living on the streets or going back and forth to hospitals. Sometimes it’s easy to forget what we have around us. I’m not in any way saying that I don’t enjoy Christmas; it’s one of my favourite holidays! My favourite part of the day usually involves the big feast of turkey dinner along with the fixings that come along with it. I guess what I’m trying to say is, this Christmas, be thankful that you’re alive. Be thankful that you’re with your loved ones. Be thankful that you have a roof over your head, because the things that many of us take for granted in life - well, they’re the things that millions of people only WISH they had. We should all be thankful for what we have today because nobody is ever guaranteed tomorrow. This Christmas, I encourage everyone to think that while you’re spending your holidays with your loved ones, I would also like you to think about the families that aren’t as fortunate as many of us are because nobody knows what tomorrow will bring us. I guess that’s why they say to live today for tomorrow. From my family to yours, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a joyous new year!! Steven Greene facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

MAGICAL CHRISTMAS FOR KIDS Who doesn't believe that Christmas is magical? It is very magical! The entire holiday season can be such a magical time, especially for children. We only have a few short years where kids “really” believe. We always had Christmas traditions in our family and I truly hope my children remember these traditions and memories the whole year through. I wanted to share these few simple ideas that will help your children feel that sense of wonder and amazement of the holiday season. I love to feel the magic of Christmas and remember the wonderment I saw in my own children’s eyes. My own magical moment. Imagine your child's surprise when they receive a letter from Santa! Write it yourself and mail to your child or there are some sites on the internet that can help you with this idea. Starting December 1st, you can visit the noradsanta.org site each day to see Santa's progress as he prepares to visit all the children in the world. This is a beautiful site and it is so fun to have a peek everyday with your children. Go to portablenorthpole.com where your child can receive FREE video messages from Santa that you can personalize with your children's names! Check out icaughtsanta.com to make your own personalized athome Santa pictures. You can take pictures of different areas of your house and get Santa posed in them. Decorating your Christmas tree, cooking Christmas dinner or having a cocktail with friends and family. How about a personal phone call from Santa at Christmasdialer. com? You can type in what you'd like Santa to say and his voice sounds very authentic. Watch magical Christmas movies together! I especially love movies that really emphasize the spirit of Christmas, such as the Polar Express and Miracle on 34th Street. At reindeercam.com, you can watch Santa feed his reindeer! You can even download the app on your phone so that you don't miss a feeding. There is nothing better than Christmas books. Wrap your books and let the kids open one each day in December as a type of advent calendar. If you don't have many Christmas books, you may be able to check some out at the library. There are so many great Christmas stories that are both entertaining and meaningful. Spend some time reading with your children. Make some hot cocoa and sit under the tree each night reading a Christmas story!

HOW TO INCREASE YOUR CAPACITY FOR HAPPINESS “Dive happily into life!” This caption appears in the centre of the vision board hanging beside my desk. My primary reasons for the reminder - me, myself & I, as it is too easy to let the stories we tell ourselves hinder our walk in happiness. Fear can be one of those stories. Due to fear, I was not a great fan of rollercoasters. I avoided them most of my life until I recognized this wasn't something I wanted to pass on to my children. It took me decades to find the courage to get on one and then I finally chose to ride Space Mountain at Disney World in 1992. Why I believed a rollercoaster ride in the dark, preventing me from seeing upcoming plunges and sharp turns, thus decreasing my anxiety, is beyond me. To this day I can remember getting into the car, speeding off into the dark, the unexpected twists, dips and sharp curves. Gratitude filled my entire being as I exited. One benefit of beginning to face my fears is seeing my children increase their capacity to dive into new experiences. Similarly, life's rollercoaster provides plenty of ups downs and curves. Furthermore, there are times we feel we're in the dark and possibly out of control, a place no one likes. In addition, denying their existence doesn't prevent them from occurring. I view happiness as a basic human right. Subsequently, it is one of my great desires to find ways to increase everyone’s capacity to create happy moments.

As the holiday season approaches, words related to happiness appear more frequently - merry, cheer, joy, joyful, jolly. etc. It can be difficult when everyone around us appears bright and buoyant and we aren't. So it is important to know we possess the ability to control our happiness level. We choose how we react to external circumstances. For instance, how to respond when a restaurant takes too long to deliver a meal or the kids are loud and disruptive or which political party is currently in power. Do we want to permit these transitory moments to control our emotions? Consider the power you are giving them when you allow them to dictate whether or not to be happy. Choose wisely.
AN IMPORTANT HAPPINESS HACK

THANK YOU
When you boost your attitude of gratitude, everything changes. To begin, mindfulness increases as thanks is expressed more frequently.
Further benefits:
• The door opens for stronger, deeper relationships. • Self-esteem improves. A shift in focus makes it easier to recognize our strengths. • Both physical and psychological health improve. • Better moods emerge. • Coping skills are acquired. • Empathy is enhanced and aggressive behaviour reduced. • Finally, you sleep better. Simple things make a difference and put you on the path to more happiness. 1.Start your day with gratitude, perhaps even before you get out of bed. 2. Keep a gratitude journal - record 3 things you are grateful for each day before going to sleep. 3. Thank a friend for their support by going out for a happy meal (not the one with the free toy gift). 4. Send a thank you note or letter. 5. Express thanks when you see someone making a difference. Following a recent National Geographic Live event, I had the privilege of speaking with Mireya Mayor, a respected primatologist, and Emmy Award-nominated wildlife correspondent. I was inspired by her fascinating story, as she is truly being the change she wants to see. I thanked her for that. Then she expressed her thanks for my words indicating how rare it is to hear thanks and how much it meant to her. This brief exchange continues to resonate with me. So I close with a heartfelt thank you to all for your kind, generous support and feedback on my columns. I'm always open to a conversation and interested in your take of the issues.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous 2018.

Twas the night before Christmas Clement Clarke Moore (1799 - 1863) came from a prominent family and his father Benjamin Moore was the Bishop of New York who was famous for officiating at the inauguration of George Washington. The tradition of reading Twas the Night Before Christmas poem on Christmas Eve is now a Worldwide institution and tradition. It is also a tradition for us to put it in the Christmas Issue of The Newsy Neighbour each year! Enjoy! Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! "Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!" thenewsyneighbour.com
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.
His eyes-how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
46 •
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Christmas Jokes Alex was five. All of his Christmas presents were always signed, 'from Father Christmas.' A little while after Alex had opened all his presents on Christmas morning, we became aware that he was looking quite sad for no obvious reason. 'What's the matter, Alex?' I asked. 'Ummmm,’ replied Alex slowly. 'I really hoped that you and mommy would give me something for Christmas.' My friend reviewed her young son’s fill-in-the-blank homework. One line: “At Christmas, we exchange gifts with ____.” His response: “Receipts.” Try Before You Buy! Myra was going to the Christmas office party but needed a new party dress. In the clothing store she asked, 'May I try on that dress in the window, please?' 'Certainly not, madam,' responded the salesgirl, 'You'll have to use the fitting room like everyone else.' I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph. ~ Shirley Temple

Decorating your Home for Christmas Christmas is an extremely busy time of year. By the time you get you shopping done, gifts wrapped and your cookies and cakes baked, it’s likely you don’t have the energy left to put into extravagant decorating. Although less
than energetic, you still want your home decorated for Christmas. After all, Christmas is just not the same without lights and decorations. Decorating your home for Christmas doesn’t have to be stressful. There are many things you can do and items you can use to dress up your home for this wonderful season. One suggestion when decorating your home for Christmas is using ribbon. If you have a decorating theme for Christmas, regarding colour, choose ribbon to correspond with your theme. You can tie ribbons to all sorts of items in your home such as chair backs, wreathes, basket handles, stair railings and even doorknobs. Ribbons and bows are very festive. A good idea is to choose ribbon which can be easily untied and retied. This way you can reuse the ribbon another Christmas season. Using holiday tableware is nice when decorating your home for Christmas. Search your home for anything Christmas; plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, any piece of tableware that has a Christmas theme. Make sure to use these items each and every meal, every day throughout the Christmas season. Another good idea is to buy a few pieces each year. In time you’ll have enough tableware

to serve the entire community. Lighting is important when decorating your home for Christmas. During the month of December turn off your lights. Make use of your candles in every room of your home. Place candles on the dining table, on the coffee and end tables in the living room and perhaps place a nice scented pillar candle in the bathroom. Don’t just put them there for decorations but also make sure to light them each night. If you have a fireplace, make sure to light it and enjoy it. A fireplace creates a cozy atmosphere, which is nice when guests are visiting. Decorating your home for Christmas should always include a Christmas tree. After decorating the tree with your homemade ornaments and strung popcorn, use the leftover branches to make arrangements for your home. Put the greens in a basket or bowl, add pinecones, bows and ornaments. Use the branches to make swags to hang over doors throughout your home. Take the evergreen sprigs and place them around your home, on windows, on a bookcase shelf or on a ledge. Evergreen branches and sprigs certainly reflect Christmas. Not only do they look nice but they spread a lovely aroma throughout the home. Christmas is a time for celebrating. It’s a time to pull out all the stops. Snow is always nice for Christmas. When decorating your home for Christmas, why not use artificial snow to add a sparkle to your home? Sprinkle it on the dining table, the hutch or the fireplace. Use ornaments that reflect light and hang them around your home, from doors or even indoor trees and plants. This will definitely look dazzling at night as the candle light flickers off the ornaments. Decorating your home for Christmas shouldn’t be a dreadful task but a delightful experience. One thing to remember when decorating your home for Christmas is not to over-think your plan. Keep it simple because simplicity is elegant and beautiful. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Assemble A Pamper Basket Assemble a pamper basket for houseguests – a courtesy doubly appreciated in this day of air travel restrictions. Throughout the year, collect sample sizes of toiletries and personal care supplies. Clearance sales and dollar stores are a great source for bath puffs and loofahs, scented soaps and bath oil, toothbrushes and travel kits. Returning from a trip? Unopened travel bottles of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel find a good home in the pamper basket. Stored in a basket, box or drawer in the guest room, the "pamper basket" supplies houseguests with any personal care item they may have forgotten or been forced to relinquish at security checkpoints.

One fun game is ideally suited for anxious children, but could also be for adults, if you want to add some fun for gift giving. For children, this is a way to make that "open one gift on Christmas Eve" rule a little more exciting and make it last a little longer. You create a hunt with clues, so the children have to follow the clues to find their gift. Instead of the gift being under the tree, for example, you might put it somewhere else, but the children will follow clues to find it. For this game, you can use anything to write your clues on. You could use Christmas cards in their envelopes that you had extras of, you might cut out Christmas tree shapes for this, or you might want to use ornaments. Whichever method you choose, write a clue on each of your items and leave those around the house. You start by handing each child the first clue. It might say, "you sleep here every night" and the children will run to their beds. On their pillow you have placed another clue that might say, "mom's eggs taste better with this" and the children head to the spice cabinet, where they find another clue on the salt. The final clue (and depending on the ages of your children and their tolerance, you might have only 5 clues for this game, or many more) will be the gift itself. To make it extra fun, have the gift be under the tree. Your children won't see that coming! If you have a large gathering on Christmas Eve, try a circle game. Have everyone get in a circle and the first person will start with, "in my Christmas stocking there is an apple" and the next person will add, "in my Christmas stocking there is an apple and a boot". Each person will continue on, remembering the previous items and the adding one of their own, and all in alphabetical order. If you miss an item, you're out of the game and the winner is the person who successfully remembers all the stocking items over and over again each time they have to recite the items and add to the list.

Looking for a little physical activity on Christmas Eve? How about a rousing game of musical chairs using Christmas music? This one can be particularly fun if you use upbeat and well-known Christmas music. Use songs everyone knows and require they sing along and dance while they run around the chairs. This adds a fun element because you are likely to have at least one person who gets so caught up in the music and dancing they don't realize the music has stopped. This game is played like any traditional game of musical chairs with the loser being the one who doesn't get a chair when the music stops. Since the big event on Christmas Eve is Santa's arrival, play a game of "Where's Santa"? In this game, everyone sits in a circle and one person is chosen to be Rudolph. That person leaves the room for a minute. A Santa is chosen among those left in the room. Rudolph returns and begins hunting for Santa. Rudolph should stand in the center of the circle and try to figure out which person is Santa. Santa, meanwhile, winks at other people in the circle. If someone gets winked at, they yell, "Ho! Ho! Ho!". The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Once Rudolph figures out where Santa is, another Rudolph and another Santa are chosen and the game continues. By Christmas Eve, your Christmas cards have been on display for a few weeks, so maybe it's time to play a game with them. Have someone set up a laundry basket, or a gift box a few feet away (the distance depends on the age of your players and ability). Have them try to toss the cards into the box or basket. This sounds easy, but different cards of different weights and styles will react differently and can be harder than expected to get into the box or basket.

home can reduce the cost to heat your home, while also making it more comfortable. Use the following tips to prepare your home or business for the coldest months of the year. Schedule your annual inspection for your HVAC system to make sure that it is in proper working order. If possible, try and schedule your appointment well before the winter months so that you can avoid the rush of customers doing the same thing. Change the filter on your heating system unless you intend to ask the service technician to do so for you. Having a clean filter allows your heater to fun more efficiently. If you haven't had the ductwork checked in years, make an effort to do so now. Leaky ducts can increase your heating bills while diminishing the comfort of your home. Test your carbon monoxide detector to make sure that it is working. If you don't have one installed, you should buy one. Carbon monoxide has no odor, taste, or color, so it is impossible to notice without the assistance of a specialized detector. Carbon monoxide is a noxious gas that can make you sick or even lead to your death. If you use a chimney, hire a chimney service to clean and inspect it. You'll want to make sure that all of the bricks are secure, while also ensuring that the chimney does not have any blockages. If you haven't upgraded your insulation, there's no time like the present. In particular, the attic and crawlspace should be evaluated for their ability to prevent heated air from escaping your home.

Turn off the water supply to your outside faucets from the inside of the house, while also turning off the faucet from the exterior of the home. Check for cracks or holes around the fittings that enter your home and use caulk to seal any that you find. Seal windows and doors using weather stripping and caulk. If you have thermal-lined curtains, now is the time to hang them up for even greater savings on your heating costs. You might also want to dig out any door draft-blockers you own to put at the base of doors that seem drafty. Hire someone to clean out your gutters and downspouts or do it yourself. Clogged gutters can cause problems with the roof or walls during heavy rainstorms or after a snowstorm when everything begins to melt. Trim any trees with branches that hang close to your home. If the trees are reaching up into your electrical wires, you'll need to hire The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Santa Answers for your Kids a professional to take care of this chore for you. Check the settings on your hot water heater. Now that the cold weather is here, you might want to turn the temperature up. If you haven't already insulated your hot water heater with a specially designed insulating blanket, do so now to save on the cost to heat your water. If your AC units are removable, take them out of the windows now. Otherwise, use a specialized air-conditioning cover to protect them against the elements of winter, while also preventing drafts. If you have a programmable thermostat, switch it to the proper setting and adjust the schedule and temperature as needed. The comfort of your home is important, so you might want to consider buying a programmable thermostat if you don't already have one.
What does Santa do when a house does not have a chimney or there is a fire burning in the fire place? Santa likes to keep a few things secret so he can always surprise the kids he is visiting -- all he will say to this question is that he uses a little magic but he *always* finds a way! How do the reindeer fly? A long time ago Santa and his helpers discovered magical oats and corn-- when the reindeer eat the oats and corn the deer become able to fly and leap high into the air.

Take the time to move furniture and household items away from your furnace and heating vents. Doing so allows the heat to circulate more efficiently while also minimizing the risk of creating a fire hazard. Winterizing your home can lower the cost to heat your home. While you can achieve the best results by following every possible tip, completing at least some of them will make a difference to the size of your bills. If you begin preparing at least a few weeks before you intend to turn on your heat, you should have plenty of time to get everything accomplished.

Talk about a recipe for stress... But only IF you let it. Talking from experience, we Poirier’s were new to Strathmore during the holidays years ago now. There were soooo many things to consider, but we wanted our kids’ experience to be THE priority, because, let’s face it – Christmas is for family and especially the kids. We had no other family here when we moved and we were in a new province. But a white Christmas was going to be a first for us! So, we all sat down and made a list of NEW traditions... It was a perfect time to create new memories with new traditions. We each got to pick one new tradition and, 17 years later, each tradition is honoured – from "More Than Ice Cream" for Christmas Eve Dinner (they were the only restaurant open that first year, and our waitress still remembers us each year!) to skating outdoors on Christmas Day (only 2 Christmas' we've had no ice to skate on but hiking in +15°C sunny weather is a great substitute). Another important item that first year was an early letter to Santa, letting him know that we had moved, complete with directions on how to get to our new house. It was all good – Santa found us and we started our traditions. Strathmore was our NEW HOME!

Notes for the Division 4 Rocky View County Councilor The first month as councilor has been busy, as expected. I would like to thank all that have been emailing me with your concerns. I am also available on phone or meet in person. Emails do a couple things: 1) paper trail, and 2) show county common concerns. There are many items on my bucket list when we had our first day of budget deliberation on Nov 23. A few items that have been discussed and are not necessary in priority listed, are: - Main street pathways are in discussion and on a budget line item. - Fire services (firehall). - Snow clearing and removal. I have had a few meetings with Langdon joint-use facility board. This group has done a tremendous amount of work; I cannot thank this group enough. The second group is our firefighters; they are first class people that voluntary many hours. I will continue to work on getting a fire hall that we all can be proud off.

Santa Answers for your Kids Why can't I ever see Santa or his elves? Santa and the elves are magical and move very quickly. Sometimes, if you are very good, you *might* catch a glimpse of an elf! How does Santa's sleigh make it around the world in one day? Through a combination of lots of practice and hard work, judicious use of time zones, and a little magic, Santa and the reindeer always make it in time. How does Santa know whether I have been naughty or nice? Santa maintains his naughty and nice list (now computerized, by the way), with the help of all the elves who keep track of each person -- you probably aren't even aware they are around you, but elves have a special way of keeping an eye on you. Sometimes if you look quickly enough you *might* catch one peering in a window or around a corner, but you would have to be very fast and very good! What kind of snack does Santa like left out for him? Santa loves cookies, of course, but he is always happy to try anything you think he might like -- pick your favorite kind of cookie or snack and Santa and the reindeer will be happy! The reindeer love carrots and lettuce best, of course! Why doesn't Santa always bring me what I asked for? Thanks to the elves and your gift lists, Santa usually knows what presents you would like to receive. However, sometimes Santa also knows that your parents, family, or guardians have other special things in mind. Also, Santa does not like to bring gifts that he knows your parents etc. would prefer you not to have -- such as a horse, or a space shuttle, or other gifts that would not be appropriate. Has Santa ever missed a year? No, Santa Claus has not missed a Christmas yet. At the North Pole we take many precautions so that nothing can go wrong on Christmas Eve. After so many years of practice we have plans for everything. There have been some close calls as you may see on television, but everyone here loves Christmas so much that we all work extra hard to make sure that Christmas is as fun as it is supposed to be.

Talk. Ask. Listen. Encourage Action. Check in. Hello Newsy Neighbour readers! We have had a busy start to the 3rd session of the 29th Legislature. The government is ramming through a ton of legislation, and as we head towards the Christmas season, we will try and keep you updated as to what that looks like and the impact it will have on the citizens of our province. On a positive note, I was hon-
oured to see my Bill 206 the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Amendment Act pass this last month. This is the legislation that will make it easier for expectant parents thinking about adoption to connect with prospective adoptive parents who can post their profiles on line. I was so happy that it received unanimous support, as it will help build families, reduce the stigma around adoption, the stress and the anxiety, and hopefully increase the adoption rates in Alberta. Thank you to MLA Nathan Cooper for your inspiration for this bill, and for your dedication to parents wanting to complete their families through adoption. We are very excited about the upcoming Newsy Neighbour Best in Business awards. Please make sure you support your local businesses, vote for your favourites, and come out and acknowledge them with us in January. Thanks to the Newsy Neighbour team for inventing this great event and for their amazing contributions to our local job creators. When we buy local, we invest in our communities and our local economies.

I would like to speak about pipelines. I am very grateful, actually extremely grateful to see our Premier finally working to actually support pipelines. Every Albertan should be patting themselves on the back because it is your voices of reason and common sense that has pushed this government to do the right thing and stand up for our industry and Canada’s prosperity. The Premier has been touring across the country trying to drum up support for Trans Mountain. We hope that she has reached the Federal Government, and is holding them to their approvals, and to fight against the nonsense peddled by the B.C government and their supposed concerns over the pipeline. This is tens of thousands of jobs, and this is not a game. The momentum over Keystone XL being approved across the boarder needs to continue with pushing for our own access to tidewater. Our economy is losing 25 - 50 million dollars EVERY DAY because of lack of access to foreign markets. Oil prices are higher than they have been in 2 years and we are missing out. Finally, I would like to speak about mental health. This week my friend took his own life. He was successful, he had a beautiful family, he was loved by all who knew him. He was a beautiful light in the world, and gave and gave. He spent years building his businesses to heights most of us will never experience. He was kind, and generous and so intelligent. He was also suffering from depression, border-line personality disorder and substance abuse. He was caught in a downward spiral that took him into the shadows, and the shadows won over the light of this wonderful human being. The stigma around mental health, asking for help, medications, and therapy have just got to stop! Sunday November 19th was International Men’s Day. To all the amazing men in my life, I am so happy to honour who you are and what you contribute to my life. We have to be able to have these difficult discussions, and we have to be willing to understand that these demons cross socio-economic lines, gender, age and any other so-called demographic. We need to be able to acknowledge when someone is hurting, and help them, not judge them. As we leave another “Movember” behind us, and the beard growth gets shaved off, please remember that 1 in 10 Canadian men will experience major depression in their lives. So please, as the Movember foundation says:
Talk. Ask. Listen. Encourage action. Check in. As we head towards Christmas, and we bake cookies, sit by warm fires, and enjoy the season, there are many who need our help, our love and our compassion. There are many that are suffering this year, and please give as much as you can to help out those who are less fortunate. I wish you all the very merriest of Christmases in the company of friends and family and a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year! facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour
