FEATURES
November is a great month for a lot of different reasons. It’s the month before Christmas, for example! We have included a bunch of Christmas stuff in this Issue, starting on page 22, just to help you get ready for all the fun and frivolity of December. It is also known for Remembrance Day, a time to remember and thank all those souls who left our communities and served to protect our Canadian freedoms and values. The Strathmore Legion is celebrating the “Field of Crosses” memorial project; find all the details on Page 14 and become involved! On a different note, we are contacted each and every month from community non-profit organization looking for help to make people aware of fundraising events, programs, announcements and such, so in an endeavor to help, we have started a new community website; all the information is one page 27. This is a wonderful opportunity for larger companies looking for a way to help these non-profit organizations by being a sponsor; a way of giving back to the communities they are a part of. Now, with Christmas just around the corner, you better have a look at Page 43, “Body Parts.” Ohh yes, who on Earth would not want their feet massaged?! Besides taking you to that wonderful place, it is sooo good for your body. I’m not going to tell you what is on page 44, but you may find this article interesting and a little disturbing, too! Not for the faint of heart. Derek’s book review is all about Strathmore – don’t miss what he has to say about “100 Years of Memories”! What a great gift for Christmas (along with our “I AM A…Fruits and Vegetables”, another wonderful Christmas gift)! All in all, this is just a great November Issue! Enjoy, and a big ‘thanks’ to all our advertisers and readers who just inspire us to keep making “The Newsy Neighbour” the best it can be.

Time for a new champion!
It’s November! Playoff time in the Canadian Football League. The 100th Grey Cup Championship will be contested for in Toronto on November 25, 2012. While the BC Lions are a clear favourite to defend their title later this month, we should point out; only one team has been able to win back to back championships over the last 14 years. That was the Montreal Alouettes in 2009 and 2010. The only reason that happened was the Riders had too many men on the field in 2009 at McMahon stadium. So if you want to play the odds, there is a good chance we will have a new champion in 2012. I think you see where I am going with this article. We all remember the famous quote at the start of the season from Stampeder head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “We will not be the sexiest team in the league,” said the coach. “But we will fight, claw and scratch or way to victory.” The Calgary Stampeders have been the second best team in the league this season. Which truly is amazing considering this team lost their starting quarterback in week 2 and has had to dress over 70 players on the season. John Hufnagel should win the coach of the year honours. This is the 5th straight year under Hufnagel that this team has racked up 10 plus wins. It’s the 8th straight year the Stamps have qualified for the post season. Running back Jon Cornish will win the outstanding Canadian award and has a shot at the most outstanding player award. Charleston Hughes will be in the running for defensive player of the year honours while kicker Rene Parades has an outside shot at being the western nominee for special team player. Not bad for a team that is not very sexy, and we haven’t even mentioned the outstanding play by receiver Nik Lewis. All season long, the Stampeders have had to deal with injury after injury. It started in training camp and has been the story of the season. While some teams used it as an excuse, the Stamps turned it into an opportunity for veteran players who were cast off by other organizations. Obby Khan, Tad Kornegay, Jason Armstead, Stevie Baggs Jr. and Anwar Stewart have all brought leadership and experience to a young group of players who are now start-
ing to believe in themselves. Three times this season, the Stampeders should have lost a game on a last second field goal. For some strange reason, call it luck or call it karma, the Stamps ended up winning those games. Could this be a sign that greater things are in store for this football team? Is this a team of destiny? Starting quarterback Drew Tate is finally healthy. Could he be the missing piece to take this team past the BC Lions in the west final? The Lions are good but certainly not invincible. In most positions, the Stamps match up very well against the Leos. The biggest difference is at quarterback. Travis Lulay has the ability to extend a play with his running ability. Kevin Glenn does not have that in his arsenal. If Drew Tate can regain his form, that advantage is no longer in play. “This is Kevin’s team right now,” Tate told us on QR 77’s Sportstalk. “Kevin has done an amazing job, and he deserves to be the starter. But I agree, to beat the Lions, the quarterback will have to test their secondary and linebackers with the run.” Let’s hope the Stamps get a chance at the Lions in the West Final and don’t disappoint in the semi-final at home. The worst case scenario for the CFL this November: an all-west matchup in the 100th Grey Cup Championship. It’s a very real possibility. At the start of the season, we all predicted the balance of power switching to the east! How wrong we all were. Even with Ricky Ray, the Toronto Argonauts are an average team at best. The once proud Alouettes are still the class of the east but they are a team in decline. With a western conference cross over in play, how would the league feel about a Battle of Alberta in Toronto? A cross over team has never made to the championship game, but stranger things have happened in the wild world of sports! About Jock Wilson:
Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for close to 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on QR77 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 p.m.

Remembrance Day November 11, 2012
Keeping the Memory Alive – Strathmore #10 Royal Canadian Legion
With over 340,000 members the Legion is one of Canada’s largest community based service organizations contributing millions of dollars and volunteer hours. They are responsible for the perpetuation of “REMEMBRANCE” in Canada through the Annual Poppy Campaign - reminding Canadians of the 117,000 men and women who gave their lives in the wars and military missions around the world. Poppy funds collected are used for assistance to veterans, ex-service members and their families who are in need. The Strathmore #10 Royal Canadian Legion is the second oldest branch in Alberta and celebrated 85 years since receiving their charter on Oct. 8, 1926. Previous to 1926 the Legion was known as the Great War Veterans’ Association. On Remembrance Day, November 11, the Legion holds a memorial service to remember the nation’s losses. The ceremony starts at 10:30 A.M. at the Civic Centre and lasts until 12:30. There are guest speakers and the cadets and R.C.M.P. donate their time to the ceremony, placing the wreaths. What a sight to behold as all the veterans will be in uniform – my chest wells with pride just thinking of it. The moment of remembrance begins with the bugling of “Last Post” “ immediately before 11:00 a.m. with two minutes of silence and ending with the playing of a lament, the bugling of “The Rouse” and the reading of the Act of Remembrance. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. RESPONSE: We will remember them Following the ceremony at the Civic Centre, all are welcome to attend the Field of Honour ceremony at the Strathmore Cemetary and finishing at the Legion with chili and buns. All are compliments of the Strathmore Legion. The afternoon will be spent sharing stories and comradship with all the veterans and friends. There will be music playing wonderful old tunes and a truly fulfilling day will be had by all in attendance. Page 14

Field of Crosses – MEMORIAL PROJECT
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them . . . At sunrise each morning from November 4th to November 11th there is a flag raising ceremony at the Field of Crosses at the Strathmore #10 Royal Canadian Legion. At sunset the flags are lowered. There will be 42 crosses on the lawn and the names on the cenotaph’s are from men who died from the Strathmore area. These were paid for by the Ladies Auxiliary in Strathmore – Thank-you so much Ladies. I bet you did not know that we have two families who are living relatives of soldiers who died in the wars. Gunner James Edward Harwood, who was killed in WW2 and Private Harold Armstrong Wright Killed 1916. Members of the public are welcome at these ceremonies or to visit the site at any time, to walk among the crosses, to lay flowers at a loved one’s memorial or to be reminded that the price of the freedom we enjoy was not free. The memorial project is an initiative of the McCann Family Foundation in association with the Calgary Poppy Fund and numerous volunteers. There is a park reserved along Calgary’s Memorial Drive for 3,000 white crosses, which are displayed each year on November 1st and removed November 11th, after Remembrance Day services. The date coincides with the Calgary Poppy Fund’s annual fundraising campaign. Each cross is inscribed with the name, rank, regiment, date of death and age at death of a Southern Alberta soldier killed in action. It is estimated that more than 3,000 Southern Alberta soldiers have been killed in action. Veterans Affairs Canada keeps records of those who died, but not the hometown of the casualty; we welcome input from friends and relatives who have lost a loved one from Southern Alberta who was killed in action and is not included in our Field of Crosses. The wish is that no Southern Alberta soldier who paid the ultimate price for our freedom is ever forgotten. It’s the Soldier, not the Reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It’s the Soldier, not the Poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It’s the Soldier, not the Politician, that ensures our right to Life, Liberty & the Security of the Person. It’s the Soldier, not the Campus Organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It’s the Soldier, not the Lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It’s the Soldier, not the Preacher, who has given us freedom of religion. It’s the Soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the
flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag and who allows the protestor to burn the flag. And Private Harold Armstrong Wright. Killed 1916, who was Nina Newalls grandfather.

Please Buy A Poppy Each November, Poppies blossom on the lapels and collars of over half of Canada’s entire population. Since 1921, the Poppy has stood as a symbol of Remembrance, our visual pledge to never forget all those Canadians who have fallen in war and military operations. The Poppy also stands internationally as a “symbol of collective reminiscence, as other countries have also adopted its image to honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The millions of bright red poppies in exchange for contributions are to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans. The program provides multiple benefits to the veterans and to the community. The hospitalized veterans who make the flowers are able to earn a small wage, which helps to supplement their incomes and makes them feel more self-sufficient. The physical and mental activity provides many therapeutic benefits as well. Donations are used exclusively to assist and support veterans and their families. The poppy also reminds the community of the past sacrifices and continuing needs of our veterans. The poppy has become a nationally known and recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn to honour the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars.
Why Wear a Poppy? “Please wear a poppy, the lady said, And held one forth, but I shook my head. Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there, And her face was old and lined with care; But beneath the scars the years had made There remained a smile that refused to fade. A boy came whistling down the street, Bouncing along on carefree feet. His smile was full of joy and fun, “Lady, said he. “May I have one? When she pinned it on, he turned to say: “Why do we wear a poppy today? The lady smiled in her wistful way And answered: “This is Remembrance Day, “And the poppy there is a symbol for The gallant men who died in the war. “And because they did, you and I are free That’s why we wear a poppy, you see. I had a boy about your size, With golden hair and big blue eyes. He loved to play and jump and shout Free as a bird, he would race about. As the years went by, he learned and grew And became a man - as you will, too. He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile, But he’d seemed with us such a little while

When war broke out and he went away. I still remember his face that day. “When he smiled at me and said good-bye. ‘I’ll be back soon, Mom, so please don’t cry.’ But the war went on and he had to stay And all I could do was wait and pray. “His letters told us of the awful fight (I can see it in my dreams at night), With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire, And the mines and the bullets, the bombs and the fire. “That sure did sound like an awful fight, But your son - did he come back alright? A tear rolled down each faded cheek; She shook her head but didn’t speak. I slunk away in a sort of shame, And if you were with me, you’d have done the same; For our thanks, in giving is aft delayed, Though our freedom was bought - thousands paid! And so, when we see a poppy worn, Let us reflect on the burden borne By those who gave very all When asked to answer their country’s call That we at home in peace might live. Then wear a poppy and give! ~ By Don Crawford
Gleichen Gleichen actually has quite a military past. It was a large recruitment center for WWI and II. Over 500 men and even a few women enlisted through this recruitment centre for those wars. In World War I, 51 men lost their lives and in World War II another 13 lost their lives. We even had people from this area go to the Boer War and the Korean War. My husband, George Bishop, was a member of both NATO and the UN Peacekeepers. As a result of his military past, we started Remembrance Day services in Gleichen again in 2005 and had the WWI cenotaph fixed and built a WWII cenotaph. We have also had all the stones in the Field of Honour either replaced or sandblasted to make them look like new. Our Gleichen Development Council approached Wheatland County and they have named a nearby street close to the Field of Honour “Veteran’s Way. Remembrance Services start around 9:45 on November 11th at the Gleichen Community Centre (the former Legion). Doris Lindman, George Bishop ~ Remembrance Day Committee.

Feeding the Birds for the Winter I have been feeding birds since the first day I saw a Blue Jay in my yard. I quickly ran out and bought two bird feeders and, just this week, purchased two suet feeders for my little chickadees and nuthatches. I love feeding my birds and watch them every morning as I have my morning coffee. Feeding my birds has become a very rewarding and enjoyable hobby. Even more important, I’m providing much needed nourishment during the cold winter months when natural food sources can be hard to find. But before you rush out and buy a feeder, here are a few hints and tips to make bird feeding safer for the birds and more fun for you. Be warned, however, bird feeding can become addictive and, before you know it, you’ll find yourself just having to buy “one more feeder.” Please remember, this is a commitment; don’t start if you are not going to keep refilling the feeders. It’s more of a commitment than I thought – I just purchased a 30-pound bag of black-oil sunflower seeds. I have found when it’s really cold out, I will have to fill my feeders just about every day, so if you don’t want to spend the money, don’t even get started. Once you start feeding birds, keep it up until spring comes. Birds will depend on the food you supply and may have a hard time finding other food if you stop feeding them. This is particularly true if yours is the only feeder in the neighbourhood. It’s especially important to keep feeders filled during very cold spells. Equally important — make sure the feeders are full at daybreak (you can fill them the night before) because birds need nourishment after a long cold night. October is the time to start putting feeders out (if you haven’t been feeding birds year-round). Natural food sources are becoming depleted and any nuts or fruit left on shrubs will be used up throughout the winter. Keep your feeders clean. Wet seeds spoil quickly and can become poisonous. Every so often, empty, dry, and air out feeders. Never use commercial cleansers to disinfect feeders; they are very toxic to birds. Use hot water and scrub well. Take time to find the right location for your feeders. Put them near shrubs or trees that will provide protective cover for easy escape from predators. Don’t put feeders on or near windows. The glass reflects the foliage beyond and confuses birds, causing them to fly into windows with often-fatal results. Hawk decals and dangling objects help but don’t entirely prevent such tragedies. Metal can become stuck to birds’ feet during cold weather, causing the flesh to tear. Avoid metal on seed and suet feeders, using plastic-coated products instead. If you make a feeder from a hard plastic container, make sure you bind the edges with tape. Birds don’t have teeth to chew their food; instead their powerful gizzard grinds seeds, nuts, and berries. But they need grit to help them with digestion. You can supply it by putting out packaged canary grit, finely ground eggshells, very fine gravel, or clean sand. Peanut butter warning. Many books list peanut butter as an appropriate food for birds. However, because it is so sticky, they can choke on it. If you use it (and I do not recommend it), mix it half and half with wheat germ or melted beef fat. Too much peanut butter can also cause health problems for birds. Limit the use of bakery products (bread, muffins, etc.). They are low in nutrient value and can cause malnutrition in birds that eat them too often. Seed: There are many types of seed available, and certain birds prefer specific seeds. A list of birds and their seed preferences is provided below. The most popular seed is sunflower, both striped and black-oil type. Mixed seeds are also popular with feeder enthusiasts, but depending on the type of seed mix, much of it may be wasted. It’s best to buy a good quality mix from a
store specializing in bird feeding. Thistle or niger seeds are favourites of finches, especially goldfinches and redpolls, and white proso millet is also highly palatable to many birds. Suet: This attracts many insect-eating birds that are forced to change their diet to fruit and seeds during the winter. Avoid bacon fat, which contains too many harmful chemicals and use beef suet instead. You can buy commercially prepared packages of suet, some with seeds, or you can make your own from suet obtained from a butcher. Melting the suet helps remove impurities. Place the suet in a plastic-coated suet-holder, or smear it into the holes of a suet log. Don’t tie it with string; bird’s feet may become tangled in it.
Types of Feeders
Many different types of feeders are available, but most fall into several basic types. • Hopper feeders are the most common and can store a lot of seed, which is released as it is used. They can be mounted on poles or platforms or hung from branches. • Tube feeders are cylindrical in shape and have several feeding outlets with perches. They can be hung from clotheslines, poles or branches and are best for chickadees, finches, and other small birds. Thistle or niger feeders are similar but the feeder openings are mere slits allowing one tiny seed to be taken at a time. • Platform feeders attract larger birds such as jays, and can also be used to hold fruit and nuts. They can be mounted on poles at varying heights. Their base may be solid wood or, better still, plastic-coated mesh which lets rain fall through keeping seed dryer.

Christmas
His Story of the Night Before Christmas It’s nearly Christmas Eve. That can be one of the most relaxing days of the year. You’ve either finished your shopping or said, “Oh, to heck with it.” You get to push aside your worry if you are going to be fired from your job because of your Christmas party antics and you have until after Christmas day to think about how you are going to pay for all the presents you bought. So, anyway, I talked to my neighbour the other day and he told me about his Christmas Eve last year which was not a very relaxing event at all. It was pretty stressful when you get right down to it. The night started off pretty good. They got the kids to bed and he said it was almost like there were sugar plums dancing in their heads. It was real quiet and he and his wife had just settled down and, according to him, he was hoping for a little action. That’s when the trouble started. He heard this darn mouse start to screech and since his wife hated mice, he had to go hunt it down. While he was looking for the mouse, he heard this clatter arising out in the yard. So, in a flash, he tore open the shutters and threw up the sash (to be clear the sash was not something he had eaten; it was the window.) As soon as he was able to get it open far enough, because
it was stuck from a sloppy paint job last summer, he yelled out, “Hey, what the heck’s going on out there? Shut up or I’m calling the cops. I don’t care if it is Christmas Eve!” Well, this didn’t seem to matter to the guy out on the lawn. He was yelling to somebody, “On Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen, and Donner, and Cupid, hurry up there’s going to be a blizzard!” (or something like that.) This was news to my neighbour because he heard the weather was supposed to be clear. Anyway, from the names, he didn’t know if this was some weird dance troupe, or what, and then he heard them up on his roof and he really started to freak out. But he did figure if it was just a bunch of weird dancers, he could handle it, even if there were a lot of them. Then it got worse. He heard somebody sliding down the chimney. His first thought was he had packed away his shotgun because he didn’t have a permit to have a gun since he just didn’t think that was right to have to get one. But, anyway, he ran to the top of the steps. Then he remembered that while he did have a chimney it just led to his furnace; he had no fireplace. Miraculously, this guy got into his living room. Sure, he was covered with tarnish and soot, but what would you expect since he just came out of the furnace. This guy was a fat little elf with white hair and a beard and he was dressed in an outfit that pretty much confirmed the ‘weird’ theory. But the good part was he had a bag full of toys with him and he was putting them under the tree and into the kid’s stockings. This guy wasn’t robbing him – he was leaving gifts! He didn’t speak a word but went straight to his work, filled all the stocking and turned like a jerk. (I’m not sure how he turned that my neighbour thought he was a jerk, but that’s what he said.) Then, somehow, he flew up the chimney and to the weird dancers he whistled and away they all flew like the down of a thistle. (I have no idea what that means but I’m guessing it’s a ‘weird’ thing since he was whistling at the weird dancers. Hey, I’m not judging, I’m just telling the story.) They all flew away somehow but he shouted as he left, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!” Admittedly, sometimes my neighbour can be full of youknow-what, but it did make for a good story worth repeating. Merry Christmas everybody! Thanks for reading. Steve

Veggie Heads
By: Kathryn Hartwell
I know it is only November (how can I even say that – only November?!), one more month and 2012 will be just a distant memory. I know everyone says it, but where did the year go? But really, where did the year go?! With all the snow on the ground and all the Christmas paraphernalia in the stores already, I’m thinking of putting up my Christmas tree – is it too early? Well, it’s not too early for Veggie Heads to start planning for Christmas. It seems because vegetarians don’t eat turkey or ham at Christmas, they have come up with this very creative recipe called Nut Roast. Now, when I think of roast – well you know what I imagine! This is way different – but I’ve got to say it truly sounds like it could be very tasty. Maybe I might use it as a side dish this Christmas just to try it out!

Veggie Christmas: Nut Loaf
Great Stocking Stuffers
The contributor says this nut loaf is always a hit, even with her nonvegetarian friends. It is moist, nutty and deliciously filling. If you have a food processor then whip it out to help with the chopping and you can get this recipe made up in a matter of minutes! She prefers to leave some of the nuts quite roughly chopped for a nice crunchy texture but if you prefer a smoother texture then simply chop then more finely. Serve with a mushroom sauce – recipe below. If you like mushrooms, give it a try; if not then don’t worry - the nut loaf is lovely and moist and flavoursome all by itself!

and cook for a minute or two. Add wine/sherry and cook until the liquid is reduced by about fifty percent. Add sour cream or cream or cheese and cook until the sauce is combined and thickened. “And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ‘till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?” ~ Dr Seuss
Roasted Carrots
12 wholesome carrots 3 tablespoons good olive oil 1 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper 2 Tbsp minced fresh dill or parsley Preheat the oven to 400°F. If the carrots are thick, cut them in half lengthwise; if not, leave whole. Slice the carrots diagonally in 1 1/2-inch-thick slices (the carrots will shrink while cooking so make the slices big). Toss them in a bowl with the olive oil, salt, and pepper. Transfer to a sheet pan in 1 layer and roast in the oven for 20 minutes, until browned and tender. Toss with minced dill or parsley, season to taste, and serve.

Background Fabrics Felt, burlap, or velvet are all good choices for your background. Felt is available in many colours and sizes at most craft supply stores. It is often cheaper than burlap, or velvet. Burlap is also relatively inexpensive and comes in a variety of colours. The dyes used with burlap tend to be less intense over time, especially if exposed to direct sunlight or rough weather when hung outdoors or in a window. Velvet is the most expensive fabric you can use for your background. It provides depth to a piece, and is the most touchable of all the choices. Velvet takes fabric paint well. Like burlap, however, it fades when exposed to sunlight. Themes Christmas wall hangings can be religious, nostalgic, or seasonal. Religious themes include manger scenes, shepherds guarding their flocks, silhouettes of Mary and Joseph, kitetailed stars, or a silhouette of the night sky over Bethlehem. Nostalgic themes include fireplace scenes, decorated Christmas trees, snow-covered nighttime cityscapes, and Edwardian or Victorian Christmas scenes. Seasonal scenes include birds and animals in snowscapes, winter outerwear, sleds, sleighs, jingle bells, and candles. Samples of other themes are available at Christmas Craft Freebies: Wall Hanging Patterns. Tools Scissors, pinking shears, and cutting wheels are essential when making Christmas wall hangings. Scrapbooking shears come in a variety of edge shapes, giving you even more choices. Scissors provide a smooth edge, while pinking shears create a zigzag. Scrapbooking shears include large and small-scallop edges, mountains, doily, and other interesting shapes. Straight and t-pins help hold fabric pieces together until you glue or stitch them in place. Straight pins with colouredbead heads allow you to colour code background, foreground, and midground pieces, to ensure that you secure each in the correct order. Sequins, bead strings, rickrack, lace, metallic cord, and other trims provide luxurious accents and allow you to create eye-catching wall hangings that can be seen from a distance. These trims also provide dimensionality if you are www.thenewsyneighbour.com

AGES AND STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT Four to Five Years By Jeanette MacKay, Reprinted This is the tenth and final article in a series of articles on child development from birth to five years. These articles are written to help parents and caregivers recognize and understand the ages and stages of a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development during the first five years of his or her life. These are only meant to be guidelines as every child is unique with their own personality, learning style and family background. There are, however, some general similarities that can help you recognize the stages of development and offer a nurturing environment where your child may develop to their full potential. Your preschooler is becoming very independent and likes to make her own choices about what to wear, which foods to eat and which activities to take part in. It is important at this time to allow her to make decisions and you can reduce conflict by offering choices. For example saying, “Would you like to wear your red pants or your green pants?” allows her to make a decision but you have comfort in knowing she is wearing something you approve of. It’s also important to set limits and have consistent expectations for behaviour. Offer praise and positive reinforcement for desirable behaviours and she will respond by repeating those behaviours. Emotionally, your preschooler feels good about himself and is able to identify or name his feelings or frustrations. He uses pretend play to act out and gain control of frustrating or frightening experiences. He may display signs of jealousy, particularly if there is a younger sibling in the family who is getting attention when he is not. Your child is able to concentrate and work alone for up to twenty to thirty minutes and so is more able to listen to direction, keep at difficult tasks for longer periods of time, and engage in longer stories. He complies with your requests more often and adult approval is very important to him. Physically, your preschooler is gaining more control of her fine motor skills. She can hold a pencil with the correct grasp, draw lines, shapes Page 24
The Newsy Neighbour
Intellectually, your child may have developed to the point where he has a vocabulary of about 1500 words and he is able to use those words in sentences to describe objects and events that are occurring in his life. He can tell long stories about his own past experiences and talks about and understands imaginary situations. He will experiment using new and unfamiliar words and he likes to play with words in silly rhymes. He recognizes the difference between bigger and biggest, and smaller and smallest. Your preschooler is able to sort and classify objects by their characteristics and enjoys games that require matching items. He understands the order of numbers, can identify and name colours, and is able to replicate patterns, sequences and order. Socially, your preschooler is usually able to play well in groups but may show a special attachment to one playmate. She understands taking turns and sharing but may not always want to. She is also beginning to understand the meaning of right and wrong but doesn’t always want to do what is right. Your preschooler is beginning to show the ability to self-regulate her emotions and looks to you for recognition and acknowledgement of her accomplishments. Comfort, play with and teach your child by providing the appropriate motor and sensory stimulation. Encourage pretend play including props for things such as a restaurant, grocery store or doctor’s office. These don’t have to be expensive items. A big box can become a store, a house, a puppet theatre or a fire truck. Save empty food boxes, cans and bottles to provide grocery items and save a box of your old clothes for dress up. Play board games like ‘Snakes and Ladders’ and ‘Candyland’ which have simple rules and involve identifying colours, counting and moving player pieces. He will learn that rules, counting, taking turns, winning and losing are all part of the game. Encourage him not to give up on games when he plays with others and help him understand that it’s all right for him to lose sometimes. Provide many opportunities for drawing, writing, cutting, pasting and offer a variety of materials for crafts. He will be able to think of all sorts of things to make if he is given the materials to do so. Craft materials do not have to be expensive. You have a lot of materials readily available in your home like milk cartons, macaroni, a button jar, magazines, straws, cotton balls, small boxes, yarn, tape, wood, homemade play dough, small stones, and paper – foil, waxed, plastic, or old wrapping paper. It is important to support your child in his curiosity and exploration of his environment but it is also important that he is closely supervised during play and is given definite boundaries. Teach your child safety rules and talk about what he would do if he became separated from you in a store or some other public place. It is important that he knows his first and last name and telephone number and is able to give someone this information if needed so practice this with him. Keep enjoying a quiet time each day with your child reading, telling stories and talking about his day. Notice your child doing something good and tell him how proud you are of him. Make him feel good about himself and he will want to do something good again.

My toes are cold, my toes are numb,
“I cannot go to school today” Said little Peggy Ann McKay. “I have the measles and the mumps, A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
I have a sliver in my thumb. My neck is stiff, my voice is weak, I hardly whisper when I speak. My tongue is filling up my mouth,
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry. I’m going blind in my right eye. My tonsils are as big as rocks, I’ve counted sixteen chicken pox.
I think my hair is falling out. My elbow’s bent, my spine ain’t straight, My temperature is one-o-eight. My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
And there’s one more - that’s seventeen, And don’t you think my face looks green? My leg is cut, my eyes are blue, It might be the instamatic flu.
There’s a hole inside my ear. I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke, I’m sure that my left leg is broke. My hip hurts when I move my chin, My belly button’s caving in.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is ... What? What’s that? What’s that you say? You say today is .............. Saturday?
My back is wrenched, my ankle’s sprained, My ‘pendix pains each time it rains.
G’bye, I’m going out to play!” ~ Shel Silverstein

We want to see more of our youth through our doors, giving them a safe place to get together. We aim to provide children and youth with barrier free and affordable opportunities and activities to build positive relationships, strengthen and develop self-esteem and confidence, promote personal skill development and volunteer within the community. We are a non-profit, volunteer built organization, successfully operating for three years. The possibilities are endless as to where we can go in future with the funding provided by Aviva Community Fund. If you live in Strathmore or the surrounding areas, the status of our youth affects you! Boredom breeds mischief and we aim to keep our children and youth interested and active within the community. With the Aviva Community Funding, the Youth Club would do some much needed upgrades to the kitchen area to make it safer, more functional and more environmentally friendly. The doors would be open to all youth to drop in and utilize club services, which could include a canteen, internet café, programs, and outreach support. The goal is always to provide a safe place where our youth (many whose parents work and are left at home) want to come.

Do you know where the wicked go after death?” “They go to hell,” was my ready and orthodox answer. “And what is hell? Can you tell me that?” “A pit full of fire.” “And should you like to fall into that pit, and to be burning there for ever?”

From our Readers... A funny story that makes me feel good. My husband and I just bought some land. With it came a 100 year old house that is in pretty rough shape, and some old buildings. The gentleman that lived there was an old bachelor, never married, with no children. This gentleman is still very much alive and still very fond of this property (at the beginning of the sale, we had heard that the previous owner would have a hard time walking away from the property, so we mentioned it would be a while before we could build and he was welcome to come out any time). Since we purchased the property, the gentleman still comes out to it almost every day. We stop in at the property often to daydream and do some clean-up in hopes that one day we can start building our dream home. On one of our visits, the elderly gentleman was there sitting in the old house. Apprehensively, my husband and kids and I walked up to the house. It’s funny how even though the property is ours we still feel like we’re intruding. The old man is sitting in his old chair in his old house reading his mail. I’m glad that he still likes to be there. It makes me feel like we made a good purchase; like we will feel this way about the place for years to come. We chatted with him for a while and as we said our goodbyes, he says, “Thank you for stopping by.” It was at that moment that I realized, we www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Chestermere Community Christmas Party - December 8th
not only purchased our future homestead but also adopted new friend. ;) ~ Shanna There was an elderly couple named George and Irene. They each had been married to their spouses for a long time. However, their spouses had both been deceased for a while, so George and Irene took comfort in each other’s company. They became good friends. One day, George asked Irene to marry him, and she said yes! When they went their separate ways that evening, George tried to remember if Irene had said yes or no. So, in the morning, he got up the nerve to call Irene and double check with her if she said yes or not. As it turns out, she was pleased that he called, because she knew she said yes, but wasn’t sure who she had said yes to. ~ Patricia Try Before You Buy! Myra was going to the Christmas office party but needed a new party dress. In the clothing store she asked, ‘May I try on that dress in the window, please?’ ‘Certainly not, madam,’ responded the salesgirl. ‘You’ll have to use the fitting room like everyone else.’ - Michelle The Newsy Neighbour

Remember to Teach Your Kids Peace Remembrance Day,
for many, is a day of reflection and a day of thanks for all those that gave their lives in the name of their countries. Remembrance Day; it’s not just about war, but about peace. If we teach our children about peace, they could be the generation that won’t start the wars, but practice that ultimate unreachable possibility - peace. Imagine,
("Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one." ~ John Lennon)
could there really be such a world? Teach your children kindness, consideration, giving and peace.
With all the attention that bullying is getting, now is the time to teach
your children to be kind to each other and Remembrance Day is just the right opportunity to begin this journey with your family. I truly believe that kindness matters and if we can strengthen the trait of compassion that humans show to one another, animals, and their environment, it would rule out many of the problems and challenges we face in the world today and for our children's future.
We cannot teach peace through words alone. We must teach by example, by the way we interact with others, by the way we treat our animals, by the way we respect our environment. Our children observe our actions and follow our lead. We are responsible for the future generation who will inherit our planet.
We can teach love, peace, empathy, and compassion to our children, empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to make a difference in their own world.
Simple kindness may be the most vital key to the riddle of how human beings can live with each other in peace, and care properly for this planet we all share." Quote by Bo Lozoff
"Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal."- Martin Luther King Jr.
"Peace is not something you wish for; It's something you make, Something you do, Something you are, And something you give away."- Robert Fulghum
Steps to teach your Children Peace There is no such thing as stress-free parenting.
There is no such thing as stress-free parenting. Peace isn’t a place with no stress, but a place where you take the stress as it comes, in stride, and don’t let it rule you. You let it flow through you and then smile, and breathe, and give your child a hug. • Greet your child each morning with a smile, a hug, and a loving ‘good morning!’ This is how we would all like to be greeted each day. • Read to them often. It’s a wonderful way to bond, to educate, to explore imaginary worlds. • Build forts with them. Play hide and seek. Shoot each other with Nerf dart guns. Have tea together. Squeeze lemons and make lemonade. Play, often, as play is the essence of childhood. Don’t try to force them to stop playing. • When your child asks for your attention, grant it. • Parents need alone time, though. Set certain traditions so that you’ll have time to work on your own, or have mommy and daddy time in the evening, when your child can do things on her own. • When your child is upset, put yourself in his shoes. Don’t just judge the behaviour (yes, crying and screaming isn’t ideal), but the needs behind the behaviour. Does he need a hug, or attention, or maybe he’s just tired? • Model the behavior you want your child to learn. Don’t yell at the child because he is screaming. Don’t get angry at a child for losing his temper. Don’t get mad at a kid who wants to play video games all the time if you’re always on your laptop. Be calm, smile, be kind, go outdoors and be active. • When a stressful time arises (and it will), learn to deal with it with a smile. Make a joke, turn it into a game, laugh… you’ll teach your child not to take things so seriously, and that life is to be enjoyed. Breathe, walk away if you’ve lost your temper, and come back when you can smile. • Remember that your child is a gift. She won’t be a child for long, and so your time with her is fleeting. Every moment you can spend with her is a miracle, and you should savor it. Enjoy it to the fullest, and be grateful for that moment. • Let your child share your interests. Bake cookies together. Sew together. Exercise together. Read together. Work on a website together. Write a blog together. • Know that when you screw up as a parent, everything will be fine. Forgive yourself. Apologize. Forgive yourself. Apologize. Learn from that screw up. In other words, model the behaviour you’d like your child to learn whenever he screws up. • Give your child some space. Parents too often overschedule their child’s life, with classes and sports and play dates and music and clubs and the like, but it’s a constant source of stress for both child and parent to keep this schedule going. Let the child go outside and play. Free time is necessary. You don’t always have to be by her side either — she needs alone time just as much as you do. • Exercise to cope with stress. A run in solitude is a lovely thing. Get a massage every now and then. • It helps tremendously to be a parenting team — one parent can take over when the other gets stressed. When one parent starts to lose his temper, the other should be a calming force. • Mom and dad need a date night every week or so. Get a babysitter, or better yet, teach the older kids to babysit. • Take every opportunity to teach kindness and love. It’s the best lesson. • Kiss your child goodnight. And give thanks for another amazing day with your beautiful, unique, crazy child.

Adam and Eve After spending time with Eve, Adam was walking in the Garden with God. Adam told God how much the woman meant to him and how blessed he felt to have her. Adam began to ask questions about her. Adam: Lord, Eve is beautiful. Why did you make her so beautiful? God: So you would always want to look at her. Adam: Lord, her skin is so soft. Why did you make her skin so soft? God: So you would always want to touch her. Adam: She always smells so good. Lord, why did you make her smell so good? God: So you would always want to be near her. Adam: That’s wonderful Lord, and I don’t want to seem ungrateful, but why did you make her so stupid? God: So she would love you.
What is the one thing you’d most like to change about the world? Are you more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things? You’re having lunch with three people you respect and admire. They all start criticizing a close friend of yours, not knowing she is your friend. The criticism is distasteful and unjustified. What do you do? If you could offer a newborn child only one piece of advice, what would it be? If you had to move to a state or country besides the one you currently live in, where would you move and why? Which is worse, when a good friend moves away, or losing touch with a good friend who lives right near you? Would you rather lose all of your old memories, or never be able to make new ones? Do you remember that time 5 years ago when you were extremely upset? Does it really matter now? If you just won a million dollars, would you quit your job? Do you feel like you’ve lived this day a hundred times before? Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by 10 years to become extremely attractive or famous? What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?

The Truth About Credit Cards Christmas is 50 days away and we have all started thinking about all those special gifts for our families. Perhaps you have not budgeted for Christmas, but that’s alright; you have your credit card (or two, three, four or more!). The truth is, that is the very last thing you should be using; not just for Christmas but ever! Your credit card is evil, and I’ll tell you why. Did you know that if you only make the minimum payment on your credit card, it could take years to pay off the balance? Not only that, but you could end up spending hundreds, possibly even thousands, in interest by the time the balance is repaid! Consider having a balance of $5,000, at 14%, and minimum payment of 2% of your credit card balance. Making minimum payments only, it would take you 22 years and $5,887 in interest payments to pay off this debt! Increasing your payments to $125 a month would allow you to pay off the same debt in less than 6 years and spend only $1,775 in interest. Not only does increasing your payments allow you to pay off the balance sooner, you also save money in interest. OTHER SMART FINANCIAL DECISIONS TO MAKE The small choices you make with your money. Don’t live in town? We turn on the washing machine, start the dishwasher, run the sink and flush freely – all without being too concerned about where the water goes. It just goes away. This does not apply to all of us; in fact, for a large number of people in rural areas, the water does not go away. It goes into a septic system on their property. Many are the (horror) stories of septic field problems and the expenses they entail. Septic fields operate on a quality/quantity type of concept. They have a definite limit on how much and what kind of waste they will accept. As that note, a cynic/skeptic might observe it is unfortunate this limitation does not apply in more areas. Water-based appliances have a big influence in how well our septic systems operate. The washing machine and dishwasher are two important factors in septic life. A traditional washing machine can pump up to 40 gallons of water plus detergents and clothing fibres (some of which can’t be broken down), per wash cycle into a septic system. Doing many loads of wash in one day can potentially overload a system. It is better to spread the loads out through the week and use as little detergents, bleach, etc. as possible. High efficiency (top or front load) washers use much less water and detergents than traditional top loaders. Energy savings aside, they are far more septic friendly and can reduce fraying (fibre loss) in clothing. Newer energy efficient dishwashers use less water and detergent. There are still food particles going into the system; however, these are easily handled on a regular pump-out schedule. Garburators are not the best for a septic system. As a rule of thumb, they increase the food particle load and result in increased solids. Beyond the solids and increased pump-out requirements, overloading your septic can result in damage to the drain field. This can be an expensive repair. It is definitely worthwhile looking at high efficiency water-based appliances for septic field living. Your independent appliance dealer will have knowledge of septic operations and what appliances are optimal for your requirements. A note on many of the additives for enhancing septic operation: check them out carefully and review what they claim. Some can even be bad for your septic drain field. A smart, savvy and informed consumer is the only way to be. Remember – there are 4 sides to every story; one side, the other side, the political/media side and the truth. This Kind of Stuff Has Got To Stop In Our Country We Must Stop This Immediately! Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper, groceries are heavier, and, everything is farther away? Yarn of the Seat in Stand Freddie and John were fortunate enough to have a season ticket to watch the Calgary Flames. They could not help noticing that there was always a spare seat (B14) next to them and they had a friend who would love to buy a season ticket, especially if all three could have seats together.
...because we live here.
One half-time, Freddie went to the ticket office and asked if they could by buy the season ticket for B14. The official said that unfortunately the ticket had been sold. Nevertheless, week after week the seat was still empty. Then, on Boxing day, much to Freddie and Eddie’s amazement, the seat was taken for the first time that season. John could not resist asking the newcomer, ‘Where have you been all season?’ ‘Don’t ask,’ he replied. ‘The wife bought the season ticket back last summer, and kept it for a surprise Christmas present.’

Gasket: Gaskets are literally everywhere in your vehicle. Your vehicle is composed of thousands of parts, many of which are joined together. Sometimes the seal between these parts--between the cylinder head and the engine block for example, is crucial. In these cases, a gasket is used to help provide a proper seal. These gaskets can be made of paper, cork, rubber, or metal plates, and can often fail, requiring replacement to keep more expensive parts from failing.

community, there are children who need safe, loving homes when they cannot be with their families. In Alberta, foster parents care for approximately 4,600 children and youth. Alberta Human Services, through the Calgary and Area Child and Family Service Authority (CFSA) is always looking to recruit new foster parents and other caregivers. By increasing the number of foster homes, more children can be matched with families in their home communities where siblings can stay together and maintain important cultural ties. Every child’s situation is unique, which is why it is important to have a variety of placement options. This helps ensure each child is placed in a foster home that best meets their individual needs and cultural backgrounds. Foster parents are key members of a team dedicated to helping children, youth and families. They receive training, financial compensation and support to mentor and support birth parents, help children achieve success in school and work with youth as they transition to independence. We can all play a role in the lives of these vulnerable children. Whole Body Vibration (WBV) Ten minutes a day for a healthier you Whole Body Vibration training ranks as one of the most effective and easiest exercise systems presently available. Improved bone health, increased strength and coordination, greater mobility, less body fat and more lean muscle mass are some of the many reasons to use WBV and make a positive change in your fitness. Vibration training was first developed over 50 years ago by Russian scientists for use in their space program as a way to limit muscle atrophy and bone density loss experienced by cosmonauts, allowing them to stay in space for longer times. Standing on the WBV platform forces your body to have involuntary muscle contractions in response to the oscillating movement. The movement mimics a human walk, so it is safe for just about everyone, however, as with any other new fitness regimen, it is recommended that you consult your medical practitioner. WBV machines are more efficient than traditional forms of exercise, because they can engage more than 80% of your muscles depending on the stances or exercises you perform while on the machine. When used regularly, the benefits of ten minutes a day include an increase in circulation and lymphatic drainage to detoxify and reduce cellulite; tighten and tone skin and muscle; strengthen core muscles; increase your sense of balance and flexibility; burn calories and lose inches; decrease muscle and joint pain; tan more efficiently and reduce stress hormones. Compared to conventional training, the WBV machine stimulates superior muscle activation so less time is required to work muscle groups completely and the benefits are wider ranging than those achieved by ordinary exercise. Take ten minutes out of your busy schedule to commit to a healthier you. Whole Body Vibration is available now at Studio 86 Tanning in Strathmore.
Oatmeal For Your Health Oatmeal has been called a lot of things, but fabulous, fantastic and fun are none of them. But wait! Maybe they should be the words to describe this healthy grain! I know it screams boring but it truly is one of the best things to eat in the A.M. It contains a special strand of fibre called betaglucan that studies have shown reduces levels of bad cholesterol—and as high cholesterol is a major risk factor associated with heart disease and strokes, a daily bowl of oatmeal could be a lifesaver! Beta-gluten can also amp up your immune systems and help fight bacterial infections by helping non-specific immune cells called neutrophils (our body’s first line of defense against pathogens) quickly locate and heal infected tissues. It not only lowers bad cholesterol but protects good cholesterol! Oatmeal contains special antioxidants called avenanthramides that prevent free radicals from attacking good cholesterol, which also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Eating oatmeal can also help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Oatmeal contains high www.thenewsyneighbour.com

It looks like dessert oozing with blueberries. There’s no way this is oatmeal; there’s no way this good for you. Oh, yes it is!
1 Cup old-fashioned rolled oats 1/4 cup chopped walnuts, divided 1/2 tsp baking powder 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon Pinch of salt 1/4 cup maple syrup 1 Cup milk 1 large egg, lightly beaten 2 Tbsp butter, melted and cooled slightly 1 tsp vanilla extract 2-3 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced 1 Cup blueberries or raspberries, fresh or frozen, divided Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 2-quart baking dish. In a medium bowl, mix the oats, half of the walnuts, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Stir to combine. In a liquid measuring cup, combine the syrup, milk, egg, butter, and vanilla. Spread the sliced bananas in a single layer over the bottom of the baking dish. Top with half of the berries. Sprinkle the dry oat mixture over the fruit in an even layer. Pour the liquid ingredients evenly over the oats. Sprinkle the remaining nuts and berries over the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the top is browned and the oats have set. Let cool 10 minutes before serving.
Breakfast Oatmeal Bars 1 1/4 cups rolled oats 1/2 cup chopped nuts (e.g. almonds, walnuts, pistachios, pecans, peanuts) 3/4 cup dried fruit (e.g. dates, apricots, raisins, prunes, cranberries) 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp salt 1 1/4 Cups milk 1 tsp vanilla extract Preheat oven to 180°C/375°F. Line 25x25cm baking sheet with parchment paper. Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl and set aside. Mix wet ingredients. Pour wet into dry ingredients and stir to combine. Let the mixture soak for 10 minutes, then pour into prepared dish and press down evenly. Bake for 35-40 minutes. Cut into squares while still hot. Let cool completely before storing in airtight container. Makes about 16 bars.
OATMEAL FOR YOUR SKIN Now, you know that oatmeal is a fibre-rich super food that does an all-star job of sopping up cholesterol and speeding it out of the body. But did you also know that its grainy little flakes perform mini miracles when applied to skin? Oatmeal whisks away dead cells, irritation, and redness, leaving a soft, moist glow behind. Four reasons why your skin adores oatmeal 1. Dryness fighting: Oats contain polysaccharides, which become gelatinous in water and leave a fine protective film on the skin, preventing dull, flaky dryness. 2. Moisturizing: Oats are full of healthy, lubricating fats. 3. Defence building: The proteins in oatmeal help maintain the skin’s natural barrier function, which ensures that the world outside the skin stays out, and what’s inside the skin stays in. 4. Pore cleansing: Oats are filled with natural cleansers (called saponins) that gently remove dirt and oil from the pores. To reap all of these benefits, treat your skin to a colloidal oatmeal mask every week or two. Here’s a super simple recipe.
Soothing Oatmeal Mask 2 tbsp old-fashioned oats, 2 tbsp hot water, 1/2 tbsp honey Put the oats into a clean herb or coffee grinder on the finest setting, and process into powder. Pour into a small bowl and stir in hot water and honey. Let stand for 5 minutes. Wash your face with warm water and while it is still damp, massage paste onto face circling around eyes and mouth. Leave on for 10 minutes. Remove with tepid water and a washcloth. Apply your favourite moisturizer to seal the deal and set the glow. Don’t stop eating oats just because you’ve transformed them into a beauty treatment! By: Kathryn Hartwell

REFLEXOLOGY I have read articles in the past regarding reflexology and never gave it a second thought, but lately when I wake up in the morning, the bottom of my right foot is sore. I thought this may be the time to do some research on the subject to see if I could figure out what is going on with this new affliction I am experiencing and what part of my body may have a problem. It may be time to have a foot massage! Reflexology is an applied pressure therapy. This holistic healing therapy works on the principle, that each body part is represented on the feet and hands of an individual. The foot acts as a map of the entire body. By pressing specific areas, called reflexes, on the feet and hands, one can produce therapeutic effects in other parts of the body. When these areas are pressed, they stimulate the flow of energy and release blockages. Traditional Chinese medicine teaches that “vital energy” or “life force” flows and permeates the entire organs of the body, including every living cell and tissue. Subsequently, if this flow becomes impeded in the human body, it is reflected on the hands and feet of the individual. Through the correct application of pressure, the stagnated energy or “Chi” gets unblocked. It is believed that without the proper flow of energy, the body slowly starts to manifest disease. By stimulating the Reflex Areas and Reflex Zones (nerve endings) of the feet, the blockages are detected through the experience of pain. This is found to occur in parts of the foot and hands that relates to the corresponding body part that is imbalanced. The reflex channels are a system of tiny tubes or energy channels run vertically down the front of the body and up the back of the body along the entire length of the body. They are connected to all the organs, glands and tissues of the human body. They turn around at the feet and the hands. This is why rubbing in these locations is especially helpful. When one does this, it stimulates the entire channel to empty or open, and this action moves the energy along the channel. Interestingly, each part of your foot and hand – top, bottom and sides – corresponds or connects to a particular organ, gland or area of the body. For example, the large toe, and all of the toes to some degree, correspond or reflex to the head. The arch of the foot reflexes or corresponds to the spine. The middle of the foot corresponds to the trunk and internal organs. As you rub various areas of the feet or hands, sometimes you can feel bits of hard sand-like crystals. This is a kind of sediment that builds up in the channels. When it is removed by rubbing properly, the channel opens www.thenewsyneighbour.com
or empties and energy flows to the organ or gland that the channel is connected to. It is a very complex system, but simple to work with. You can massage your own feet, or better yet, get your husband to do it for you (what a wonderful dream!). If you are sitting in front of the T.V. at night, why not treat yourself to a little massage; sounds like a plan to me!!! A GENERAL SESSION FOR RELAXATION This is used to help relax the body, for toning the body, or relieving pain. In a general reflexology session, you do not focus on any particular area of the foot or hand. Instead, just rub firmly both feet or both hands and move along the entire hand or foot. If a spot appears tense or is tender and painful, you can spend a little more time working on it. Often the tension or pain will diminish after a minute or two. However, continue on to complete the entire treatment of both feet or both hands. A general session usually lasts between 10 and 20 minutes per foot or hand. Begin with the left foot or the left hand, move to the right foot or hand. Begin on the top of each foot or back of the hand, rub from the ankle or wrist toward the toes or fingers. Then rub the bottom of the foot or palm of the hand moving from the tips of the toes or fingers toward the heel of the foot or wrist. Move in straight lines, not in circles. Rub quite firmly, enough to cause some pain, but not too much. QUICKY FOOT MASSAGE This consists of basically pushing on the feet with your fingers. It can feel very good, something like a deep massage. You can do this for 5 minutes on each foot, pushing fairly hard on the top of the foot, the bottom of the foot, the toes, the heel area, and the anklebone area on both sides. Health food stores or online natural healing stores sell various kinds of foot rollers, hand rollers, and perhaps rubber, wooden or metal balls, blocks, and other devices to help with your reflexology treatments. Some people rub their feet with a tennis ball. A foot roller can be wonderful to use when just sitting and watching television or using your computer. It is placed under your foot and you just roll your foot over it. Tools are also good for people whose hands and fingers may not be strong enough to do a thorough job. Be nice to your feet and give them a wonderful massage tonight sounds like this could be one of the best ways to take care of yourself today. Give it a try; what do you have to lose? You’re going to love this one! When was the last time you were de-wormed? No, not your dog or cat but you personally? And how about your kids? Have you ever been dewormed? My mother used to de-worm us twice a year and I did the same for my children, although I must say I kinda fell down on the job in the last few years they were all at home. The thing is, people need
will get carried somewhere else in your body by your bloodstream. Note that if you have parasites in the lymph system, it’ll make every disease much worse because now you cannot defend yourself properly and it will also cause inflammation as the antibodies are constantly trying to kill off a bacteria or virus that is actually living on something much bigger - a worm. Additionally, for someone with cancer or a dysfunctional immune system, you especially want to keep the lymph system clear, or else you will be prone to infection. In the case of a parasite infection, the worms can go to the lungs causing problems, the heart and cause distress, endocrine organs and make them malfunction, and even the brain, causing mental symptoms. At any rate, since worms live in just about all of us, why not purge the little boogers?
to be de-wormed just as often as their pets. The world is full of parasites and the chances of acquiring them, however clean you are, are high. For instance, a simple lick from your pet, a barefoot walk on your lawn, a swim in a reservoir or a pool with untreated water or negligence on your part to wash hands thoroughly before eating/preparing food after gardening or unwashed salad or untreated drinking water/milk/fluids or under cooked meat can bring about worms. Not to mention your children going to school!
Most doctors, and most parents for that matter, are not trained on how to properly treat worms, and many wrongly assume that it’s only something to be concerned with in other countries, or in children. Remember, we were all children at one time. If you picked up worms as a child and were never treated, the chances are extremely high that they are still in you. Many infections are picked up while we were children, only to give us major problems later when we become adults.
Now the pertinent question arises; how often should I deworm my family and myself? A quick or thorough search on the Internet may not bring you the answer to your question. There are thousands of sites to guide you through deworming schedules of horses and pets, but you won’t be able to find a definite answer for the deworming interval or schedule to be adopted for the human being. Now, the answer to the question is that in most cases, deworming once every six months is sufficient.
TAKE YOUR CASTOR OIL Herbs can be used to treat worms; black walnut, wormwood (the prima donna of worm killers), garlic, sage (yes, the same herb used in your Thanksgiving dressing), ginger, castor oil, pau d’ arco, thyme (another herb found in your cabinet), bitter lemon (actually, this is a vegetable found in Indian markets that looks like an ugly cucumber), milk thistle herb to support the liver (but doesn’t kill anything but can protect the liver during a killoff), ginger, peppermint, and the list goes on. Some people simply take a tablespoon of castor oil each month and don’t bother to go beyond. There should be no harm, however, in occasionally including some herbs like thyme, garlic, ginger, or peppermint, pau d’ arco, or taking a tablespoon of castor oil, etc. in your diet.
Worms Anyone?
Mebendazole/albendazole in suspension or chewable tablet form is the conventional drug of choice and the side effects are few and those side effects that there are, are usually caused by dead worms being expelled from the body, rather than by the drug itself. (OMG!) For more accurate information, consult with your primary physician to know the prevalence of the parasites in your area, the deworming interval that should be adopted, the deworming medicine that should be taken and its dosage needed to keep the parasites at bay. Inform the physician about the allergies and existing diseases/pregnancy that you have, before your physician charts down the prescription. If you are wondering about the possiblity of whether or not you have worms, ask yourself these questions: Have you ever eaten undercooked meat? Dairy? Beef from a fast food restaurant? How about raw food such as a salad that you did not clean yourself? Have you ever had sushi without the wasabi? Ever had raw eggs? Ever had cooked eggs (even though the eggs are cooked, there is still egg on the utensil you used that is undercooked)? Do you eat pork, which, like chicken and their eggs, are a huge parasite carrier? The same can be said for ground beef. Have you ever eaten at a buffet? Have you ever eaten dirt? Does your child, or have you, ever attended daycare? Did you suck your thumb as a child? Do you own a dog or a cat? Have you ever played with a kitten or puppy that hadn’t been ‘wormed’? Changed diapers, or washed someone else’s rear end without washing your hands? Do you have a ferocious appetite, or always just never seem to get enough to eat? Have you ever had digestion problems? Circulation problems? How many times have you eaten a meal without properly washing your hands? Did you even wash your hands? Do you eat while driving at the same time? The more “yesses” you answer to these questions, the higher the probably that you have some breadsnatchers living within you. Where do worms live in humans? If we are lucky, they live in the intestines in small numbers and stay there without causing much harm. However, in a good number of us, for whatever reason, the worms will leave the intestines and begin to crawl around in the body, get into the lymph system, or their eggs
What are the symptoms of a worm or parasite infection? People with a persistent parasite/worm infestation tend to have blood problems, especially anemia, muscle and joint complaints, mood problems, bloating, itchy anus at times, digestive complaints, heart and lung problems if it has spread, discomfort in the stomach or liver area, or they may not have any symptoms at all. They strongly resemble the symptoms of allergies. Stomach acid, which is suppose to kill worm eggs, will set you up for it if it is low, and can also give you asthma symptoms. Know that the symptoms of having too much stomach acid are exactly the same as not having enough. When it comes to a major worm problem, I suggest to really paying attention to the symptoms at night, which can include tooth grinding and clenching, and lots of drooling. The latter are also symptoms of being under stress while sleeping, but if they coincide with digestive complaints, beware. I’m suddenly feeling itchy all over and a bit nervous; or is that nauseous?! I promise I will never ever – ever – eat anything again before washing my hands. Teach your children well; there are all sorts of little creatures and bugs in the world and it seems they like to live inside all of us, and hey, a spoonfull of castor oil never killed anyone (except worms).

Luscious Joys By: Kathryn Hartwell I’m sure you have all noticed the yogurt craze going on; remember the old days when there were just two or three different types of yogurt? Now there are so many different yogurts and so many different prices; what the heck do you pick? And talking about prices – what are they thinking? We are buying yogurt – not gold!!! Anyhow, I like the original stuff; these new thick and creamy ones remind me of cream cheese, and I’m just not a fan of the new thick (Greek) yogurts – but each to their own. There seems to be a plethora of different things you can do with the thick creamy Greek yogurt and I’m here to share. So, here’s the scoop. Who knows, these sound like great ideas! Maybe I will learn to enjoy Greek yogurt! • Add chopped cucumbers, dill and a pinch of salt for a quick Greek tsatziki. • Instead of milk or sweetened yogurts, toss some Greek yogurt in your smoothie for a thicker texture. • Try it as an alternative to heavy cream when making Alfredo sauce for pasta. • Mix with chocolate syrup for an easy fruit dip for a party platter. • Add a pinch of salt for a rich substitute for sour cream. • Stir in to a puréed vegetable soup to add thickness and protein. • For a simple frozen yogurt, add chopped fruit and sweetener and put it in the freezer. • Use it instead of mayo in chicken, tuna and egg salad. • For a quick dessert, stir in light jam, raspberries, raisins, cinnamon or shredded coconut. • Use it as a frosting for cake or cupcakes. Just add vanilla or almond extract and a bit of sweetener. • Add spices and a bit of milk for a quick, guilt-free, creamy salad dressing. • Try as a pre-grill marinade for chicken or lamb: a bit of yogurt, za’atar, lemon zest, pepper flakes and a pinch of salt. • Add horseradish to make a fish or shrimp dip. • Mix it with skim milk and use instead of buttermilk for pancakes.
Tandoori-Style Marinade Recipe The acidity in yogurt acts as a tenderizer, making it a perfect ingredient in marinades for grilled foods. For chicken or lamb, season with salt and pepper, coat evenly in the marinade, and place in a nonreactive container. Cover and refrigerate at least 8 hours or overnight. For fish, do not marinate more than 30 minutes. 1 cup plain whole-milk yogurt 4 tsp curry powder 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 tsp minced ginger 1 Tbsp coarsely chopped cilantro 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt Pinch cayenne pepper 2 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. Zucchini–Pine Nut Muffins Recipe These muffins are great for breakfast or a late-afternoon snack. 2 cups grated zucchini 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup pine nuts 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp ground ginger 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup plain whole-milk yogurt 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 large eggs 1/2 tsp vanilla extract Heat the oven to 350°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Butter and flour a 12-well muffin pan; set aside. Toss zucchini and salt together in a small bowl. Place zucchini in a strainer, weigh it down with a small bowl, and set it over a small mixing bowl to drain. Heat a medium frying pan over medium heat, add pine nuts, and toast until golden brown all over, about 5 minutes. Remove to a small bowl and reserve. Whisk together measured flour, baking powder, and ginger in a medium bowl to aerate and remove any lumps; set aside. In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, yogurt, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until evenly combined. Add dry ingredients and stir briefly until just combined. Squeeze zucchini by the handful to release excess water, then add to the batter, add the toasted pine nuts, and stir until just combined (be sure not to over mix). Fill each well of the muffin pan halfway with batter and bake until a toothpick inserted into a muffin comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Set the pan on a wire rack and let the muffins cool for 5 minutes. Remove the muffins from the pan and serve. Yogurt’s health benefits have long been touted; not only is it full of calcium and protein, but also the active cultures are said to protect the gastrointestinal tract from infection.

me quite a few times after that until the day they got to take me home. I was the king of a new home. No brothers or sisters to bug me, or annoy me. I was the centre of the universe. Mommy took me to work, played with me, loved me, bought me presents, and I was treated like the king I knew I was. My life was perfect. Then, one day, they were super mean to me. When I woke up from the worst attack of my life, I was no longer a man; I didn’t know what I was. Was I a boy? A girl? Life only got worse from there. After I was “neutered,” mommy got a new job and I was left either at home ALL DAY by MYSELF (the nerve) or I was sent to Grandpa’s house. Grandpa days were the BEST. We’d play, go for walks, snuggle, and sleep in the big bed. It was glorious. But the days I was home all alone by myself were awful. I once pooped on the floor I was so mad. Then, mommy couldn’t handle not seeing my beautiful face all day every day that she quit that job and started working at home. We went for walks, we played, and it was just us – me and mommy. Life was fantastic. We were so in love. She looked at me with eyes that only saw me. Shove over, daddy – you are second in mommy’s life. Mommy and I were two peas in a pod. Life.Was.Perfect.
"You can check out my other blog entries at www.prairiepaws.ca... if you want."
Then, that awful day happened. Mommy and daddy brought her home. I don’t know where they got her because she didn’t look like any of my brothers or sisters. She was pink, and didn’t have beautiful black hair all over her body. She looked kind of like mommy and daddy. I hated her instantly.
MOMMY forgot to send in my complaints last week. She muttered something about not appreciating my negativity. I reminded her of all the ways she has ruined my life, and she quickly apologised and agreed to send in this week’s article. She will never do it again, I promise. She learned her lesson – I pooped on a thistle. Yeah, she had fun cleaning that one up.
Once she came into our lives, things changed drastically. She kept mommy out of the bed all night, which meant that I didn’t get my nightly snuggles. I was not impressed. She cried, which kept mommy from rubbing my belly. She needed to eat, which kept from my amazing walks.
-Bauer
My loyal fans have been sending me letters and emails. Everyone wants to know more about ME, and my life. I don’t blame anyone because I am awesome. You are all lucky to read my articles and very few of you are even luckier to have ever met me. My life began like any other. I was born one November morning, bright and early. I was one of 8 pups. Every one of them tried to get milk before me but I knew even that young that I was meant for greatness and made sure I got food first. Suckers.
Life sucked. And life still sucks. She doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. In fact, she just keeps getting bigger, with stickier hands and tighter hugs. I want her to go away. Mommy said it’s time for a walk. I had better go – this could be my ONLY walk of the day! The nerve!

Velociraptor Attacks News The American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention, along with the North American Velociraptor Defense Association and the United Velociraptor Widows Fund, will be providing free velociraptor safety seminars at local Red Cross centers across the nation. Contact your local center for more information. Velociraptor attack is the 3rd leading cause of death for men age 27-29. However, everyone must think about the implications of velociraptors: young and old, men, women and transgendered persons. The American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention is a bi-partisan group of professionals, dedicated to the diffusion of knowledge concerning velociraptor attack prevention. Know the Enemy The velociraptor is a bipedal carnivore with a long, stiffened tail and can be distinguished from other dromaeosaurids by its long and low skull, with an upturned snout. It bores a relatively large, sickle-shaped claw, typical of dromaeosaurid and troodontid dinosaurs. This enlarged claw, up to 67 millimeters (2.6 in) long around its outer edge, is a predatory device, used to tear into the prey, delivering a fatal blow. Velociraptors are often found on tropical islands, converted to millionarie amusement parks, but are commonly being sighted in the Pacific Northwest. Of the essential facts you should know about velociraptors: • Velociraptors hunt in packs, and are known to form an equilateral triangle around their prey. • Velociraptors can accelerate 4 m/s2, with a top speed of 25 m/s on open terrain, 10 m/s while wounded, and 10 m/s in indoor laboratories. • Velociraptors can open doors, but are slowed by them. They can open an initial door in approximately 5 minutes, and will take half that time for each subsequent door. • Velociraptors do not know fear. New Home Buyer Tips When buying a new home, there are a few things to look out for when assessing potential velociraptor attacks: 1. Check all doors and windows. Doors should be made of solid oak or steel. Windows should have steel bars with spacing smaller than the average raptor. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Plants at Christmas These are some of my favourites. Christmas is better with plants. Dress them up, even if you just dress up the pot they’re in. Enjoy the holidays!
a short-lived plant. It has a bushy form and produces slender, dark green stems. They have pointed, lanceolate leaves. Small, white, insignificant flowers that become colourful fruit in the fall. The fruit is interesting in their shape and colour they come in. They can be cylindrical, pointed, square, green, yellow, orange, red, or violet. The fruits can last two to three months before they shrivel and drop off. Usually the plant is discarded after they lose their blooms. Keep the soil slightly moist; never let it stand in water. They like a bright, sunny location. These don’t need fertilizer since they are an annual. They like as much sunlight as possible when the fruit is growing. Ornamental peppers like cool temperatures.
Poinsettia
Amaryllis These are wonderful plants. They require six hours of sunlight. Keep the soil moderately moist. The flowers will appear approximately six weeks after you start to see growth. As the flowers fade, cut them off below the swelling. You don’t want the plant wasting energy forming seeds. Let the stems die down naturally. They will put the energy into the bulbs. These plants like to be pot bound. The pot should be no more than an inch or two larger than the diameter of the bulb. Use well-drained potting soil, in a container with a drainage hole. Plant the bulb so the top two-thirds is above the soil. Water when the soil is dry to the touch. If the soil is too wet, the bulb will rot. Amaryllis like cool temperatures. They need a sunny location so the stalks and flowers grow straight.
Ornamental Pepper These plants look really neat. They look like a bouquet of small peppers. These peppers are decorative only, not for eating. This is Page 48
The Newsy Neighbour
These plants do not like to be moved. They also do not like cool temperatures. The leaves tend to curl up and fall off when they are unhappy. Poinsettias want a warm, bright place to live. It is difficult to get this plant to flower a second time. They are usually treated as a seasonal plant, discarded after the season. The milky sap can irritate the skin and mucus membranes. Poinsettias are native to Mexico. The large, oval, lanceolate leaves are mid to dark green. In winter tiny, greenish, yellow flowers appear, surrounded by large colourful bracts. These are usually bright red, but can also be creamy white, creamy yellow or a salmon pink. Water generously while flowering, keeping soil very moist. Feed every two weeks while flowering.

Old Time Cooking Tips and Hints These old fashioned cooking tips and hints are taken from a number of vintage publications, including “Buckeye Cookery and Practical Housekeeping,” “The Perry Home Cook Book,” “The White House Cook Book,” and “Young’s Demonstrative Translation of Scientific Secrets.” Slicing Pineapples- The knife used for peeling a pineapple should not be used for slicing it, as the rind contains an acid that is apt to cause a swollen mouth and sore lips. The Cubans use salt as an antidote for the ill effects of the peel. To Scald Milk- Put in top of double boiler, having water boiling in under part. Cover, and let stand on top of range until milk around edge of double boiler has a bead-like appearance. To Prevent Milk Curdling - A pinch of soda stirred into milk that is to be boiled will prevent curdling. Using Bread Crumbs for Pastry - This old cooking tip makes a tasty dessert. Many puddings that are commonly baked in a crust, such as coconut, potato, apple, and lemon, are equally as good and more wholesome, made by strewing grated bread crumbs over a buttered pie plate or pudding dish to the usual depth of crust; pour in the pudding filling, strew another layer of bread crumbs over the top, and bake. When Baking Pies, Cakes, Cookies, Etc. - A bowl containing two quarts of water, set in an oven when baking, will prevent pies, cakes, cookies, etc., from being scorched. Cake Icing Tip - A pinch of soda in your icing will keep it moist and prevent its cracking on the cake. To Prevent Pots from Boiling Over - Rub butter or lard on the rim of a pot, and it won’t boil over readily.
To Cure Salty Soup - A raw potato added to the soup will absorb the extra salt. To Cut Hard-Boiled Eggs - To cut hard-boiled eggs in smooth slices, dip the knife first in water. To Make Fowl Tender - A little vinegar in the water will help make tender an old fowl when cooking. To Beat White of Egg Quicker - A pinch of salt will make the white of an egg beaten quicker. To Remove Cake from Pan - If cake sticks to the pan, set it on a wet cloth 5 minutes and cake can be removed. To Remove Odour from Oven - If juice from pies runs out in oven, salt sprinkled on juice will remove the odour and smoke. To Peel Oranges - This old-time cooking tip can be used with a microwave oven, but only heat for a few seconds. Heat oranges a few minutes in oven before peeling, then the white inner skin will come off with the rind. To Make Tough Meat Tender - For a few minutes, lay it in a strong vinegar water. When Squeezing Lemons - Heat lemons well before squeezing and there will be double the quantity of juice. When Baking Fruit Pies - To keep juice from running out of fruit pies, insert a small cornucopia of white note paper into the center of the pie so that it is about twice the height of the pie. To Separate Eggs - When separating eggs, if you drop a portion of egg yolk into the whites, moisten a cloth with cold water, touch to the yolk, and it will adhere to it Testing Eggs for Freshness - If an egg is strictly fresh it will, when placed in a pan of water, lie on its side at the bottom of the pan. If stale, it will stand on end, and if very old, it will rise to the surface. To Remove Cooking Odours from Hands - Wash hands and before drying them, rub on about 1 teaspoon of dry mustard powder.

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. Thanks to all those who’ve supported the Newsy Neighbour and read my reviews over the last little while—and here’s to another year filled with promise! Yours in Truth, Derek Donais
100 Years of Memories: Celebrating Strathmore’s Centennial
Paul Sonsteby Polished Publishing Group, 2012 ISBN: 9780987812605
With 100 Years of Memories, author Paul Sonsteby has written a comprehensive, compelling chronicle of the establishment and growth of the town of Strathmore, from its beginnings in the 1800s to the present day. The attractive and professional design draws the reader’s eye, offering a glimpse of the obvious care and craft with which it was created. The text and photographs within are easy to follow and guide the reader seamlessly through the years as the story of Strathmore unfolds. A further, personal touch is evident on the spine of each hard-cover copy: they are individually numbered. The book’s contents are arranged by decade, with the exception of the pre-1900 era; that section makes up the initial chapter. Within each of these, year-by-year accounts are provided. As the history progresses, these yearly records become expanded and are divided into monthly entries. Important lines or excerpts are formatted in bold print, allowing the reader to locate them—and relocate them—with ease. One of the most impressive features is the occasional, longer passages that run for several pages. They explore such things as significant events, organizations or people that played a crucial role in defining Strathmore’s past and helped to make the municipality the place it has become. Unlike many community histories, 100 Years of Memories is more than simply a listing of dates, times and events that occurred in the years immediately preceding and throughout the century of Strathmore’s existence. This centennial book is a decade-by-decade testimonial to the determination and character that saw the town develop from a simple railroad siding into the vibrant and diverse community that exists today. Whether you’re a resident or merely a student of history, it’s definitely worth picking up a copy—which, by the way, is available at the town office.

This monthly column by Jody Brown, is designed to help you make better connections and live happier lives. Sometimes we just need to ask the question. Dear Lifelines, I used to be such a bitter person because of some things people did to me in the past. Now my life is changing. I feel like now I’m in control of my my anger. I wish more people could choose to use forgiveness to heal. It has made a huge difference in my life and the lives of people I’m around. Previously Unforgiving Dear Presently Forgiving, We are glad you took the time to write in and share your thoughts with us. We can learn a lot from you! Most of us will understand that forgiveness is not always an easy process as many of us struggle with it for long periods of time holding grudges, avoiding people or events, or coping with anger and hurt. Others find the process a natural shift in their thinking and it may just happen for them as they open up to different possibilities and ways of thinking. The first step is awareness that we even have thoughts or emotions about someone, something or some uncontrollable event. Often it takes time to just get to a place where we can consider seeing things from different perspectives. Some of us need time to grieve or allow ourselves to acknowledge the fact that there even is pain in our lives. For every person, there will be a
different reaction. There is no one way to feel or react, so we should avoid judging ourselves for that. Feelings and emotions don’t have to make sense. They don’t have to be logical. They just are what they are. Sometimes it’s hard to tell as we keep busy or create other disruptions in our lives and avoid being still so we don’t have to sit and reflect on those painful feelings. Although we can choose some ways that we respond to bad things that happen in our lives, it’s exhausting to control every aspect of our emotions, physical responses and mental thoughts. This type of emotional exhaustion can lead to destructive outlets like addictions and damaging behaviour creating even more challenges for us. Many have found forgiveness to be one freeing way to escape from the ongoing struggle of anger, resentment and hurt. It’s a way to essentially take control back. However, you are in no way agreeing with what happened or making it acceptable. As people say – you can’t change the past, but you can choose the way you respond to it. You can take control of this concept of forgiveness and think about if, how and when you want to forgive. You can decide what that will look like (will you meet with the person? Write a note and share it? Or will it be more symbolic with you writing down your thoughts and feelings and then burning those notes in the fireplace or tearing them up and putting them in the garbage?) Perhaps as you make these decisions you will even find some power in having choices about the steps you take. It’s all up to you, but talking with trusted friends or support groups can have an enormous impact as well. Next month we will explore more aspects of forgiveness! Feel free to send in any reflections and thoughts to us. Lifelines

Remodel Your Kitchen for a Great Return on Investment Remodeling a current home instead of buying a new one is a popular decision among homeowners in today’s economy and housing market. It’s also a wise choice, for when the time comes to sell, the return on investment for many remodeling projects is significant, especially in the kitchen. According to the 2008-2009 Cost vs. Value Report from Remodeling Magazine, the national average cost recouped from a major, mid-range kitchen remodel is 76 percent. And until you’re ready to resell, you’ll have a beautiful kitchen designed for your lifestyle. For many people, the kitchen is the most important, and busiest room in the house. Whether you’re remodeling to create the kitchen of your dreams, or to simply increase the value of your home, keep in mind that you, or the next family, will spend a lot of time in this room. You’ll want to make it as comfortable, Page 54 The Newsy Neighbour Real
beautiful and functional as possible without breaking the bank. Before you take that first step and begin demolition, here are a few vital tips to help create your dream kitchen, save precious time and increase your home’s value. Plan, Plan, Plan -- Good design begins with a great plan. It takes thoughtful preparation and while a bit complex, it’s also exciting. A kitchen remodel is a big investment, so know how much you are willing to spend and plan ahead on the layout and design features. If you do, it will be easier to manage your budget and completion date. Keep in mind that hardware, paint and wall coverings can easily be updated to reflect the latest trends, but make sure your big purchases like cabinetry, countertops and appliances are something you can live with for years. Think About the Way You Live -- Your new kitchen design should be based on the way your family lives. How many people will be in the kitchen at one time? In addition to cooking, will you use your kitchen for www.thenewsyneighbour.com Estate

Whether building for first time buyers, or in estate communities. Lifestyle believes every homeowner is entitled to a safe, sustainable home. Proud to partner with Mike Holmes, Lifestyle Homes is now offering homebuyers the opportunity to build a Holmes Approved Home. framing products, industry leading foundation protection and spray foam garage ceiling and cantilevers. On the aesthetic side, no two homes are alike. The cul-de-sac was designed so that each home was individual, with premium colors and unique elevations. Home owners will never step out their front door and see their twin house down the road or across the street. Inside the homes, the quality continues with newly designed floor-plans, walk thru pantries, fireplaces, and custom features in each home. Kinniburgh, in Chestermere is Lifestyle Homes’ newest opportunity for estate homes. Each home in Kinniburgh will be a custom design with no two homes alike. With enormous 125’ deep lots and 20 ft wide side-yards, Kinniburgh is a truly exceptional opportunity. Kinniburgh offers easy access to Chestermere Lake for fishing and water sport, championship golf, pathways, acres of stunning recreational green-space and the soon to be constructed 22,000 sq ft Chestermere Health Care Centre right in the heart of the community. Opportunities are now available for homebuyers to purchase lots and work directly with the design team at Lifestyle Homes to create the home of their dreams. Two storey homes start at 2300 sq ft and bungalows at 1600 sq ft. with triple garages. Construction of the new showhome in Kinniburgh is now underway and will be open Spring 2013.

Church Bulletin Bloopers Bertha Belch, a missionary from Africa, will be speaking tonight at Calvary Memorial Church. Come and hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa. Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don’t forget your husbands. The sermon this morning: “Jesus Walks on the Water.” The sermon tonight: “Searching for Jesus.” Barbara remains in the hospital and needs blood donors for more transfusions. Church Bulletin Bloopers During the absence of our pastor, we enjoyed the rare privilege of hearing a good sermon when J.F. Stubbs supplied our pulpit.
REQUIRED IMMEDIATELY COMMISSIONED OUTSIDE SALES
Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.
PART-TIME TO START
Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say “hell” to someone who doesn’t care much about you. Don’t let worry kill you off. Let the Church help. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be “What is Hell?” Come early and listen to our choir practice. Eight new choir robes are currently needed, due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles, and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children. Potluck supper Sunday at 5pm. Prayer and medication to follow. The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.
The Newsy Neighbour is seeking a highly motivated, experienced sales professional for the Chestermere area. Must be outgoing and able to work independently. This individual will be responsible for prospecting new business in the Chestermere area and select areas of Calgary. The individual joining our team will enjoy a professional, entrepreneurial work environment and a competitive compensation package. Must have some computer skills. Please email resume and cover letter to: newsyneighbour@gmail.com
This evening at 7 p.m. there will be a hymn sing in the park across from the church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. Page 58
