Stop Being Fat! Well it’s the beginning of 2016 - a new year - a new opportunity to get pretty and stop being lazy. It’s time to check off that “Honey-Do” list, settle down, get pregnant and start running yourself skinny on that treadmill you bought three years ago. Your hips are obviously too big, you have a muffin top and my sweet child - your rear-end is atrocious! Offended? As you should be. Listen to how ridiculous it sounds when someone else is telling you to be “better” than you were 24 hours before the world-renowned, shimmering ball dropped from the heavens on New Year’s Eve. Yet so many of us say it to ourselves each and every year after the thenewsyneighbour.com

Combine that be that because with the fact that I it’s good for you!! think you deserve so much better and you’ve got yourself a great reason to ignore the added pressures of being skinnier and smarter than you were last year. Don’t get me wrong; being healthy and setting life goals is never a bad thing, but make sure you’re doing them for all the right reasons and always keep in mind that you are absolutely enough just the way you are. free speech. Rather they are simply vile. A monster that justifies bad behaviour is being created by the “noise” in both social and mainstream media. This monster is like so many others of its ilk, intent on creating and generating fear, thus preventing people from joyfully experiencing life.

Silence is golden. Speech is often referred to as silver, thus making silence more valuable. In quiet reflection, the opportunity to find clarity emerges, bringing with it insight and, hopefully, transparent articulation. Sadly, this appears to be missing on all fronts in current provincial politics. Premier Notley, as a leader, isn’t pointing fingers over the furor created recently with the introduction and passing of Bill 6. In a recent interview with the Calgary Herald, she said “We have to take responsibility ourselves for the fact that we created a certain amount of confusion in how we originally communicated and we allowed families to be in a position where they were worrying about what the impact of these changes would be on their family farm.” A strong opposition is important for a vibrant democracy. Governments must work together for the people it represents. It is more important that truthful, reasonable and accurate discourse occurs, instead of conflict and division, if the best solutions are to be found for Alberta. By embracing the institutions of this province and its democratically elected government and not fueling the fires of those who would subvert them, the official Opposition has the opportunity to exhibit leadership rather than reactivism. The ultimate goal is working towards strengthening democracy, not destroying it. Unfortunately, an ugly and potentially violent fringe is trolling social media, attempting to undermine the tenants of Canadian democracy. Disagreements should be able to take place, perhaps even passionately, but not taken to the place where criminal acts are being voiced and allowed to remain visible on public political forums. Some of the things that have been written are not

The opposite of expression is silence. Leonardo da Vinci stated, “Nothing strengthens authority as much as silence.” What occurs in silence that creates strength? How does it occur? I believe it works two ways - both for the governing party and the opposition. Better answers emerge once we learn to be still. Those answers may lead to actions. What kind of a difference we chose to make is up to us. More is accomplished when we are respectful of one another. Social media has the ability to taint reputations quickly with information that may or may not be true. I’ve had to remove posts when I failed to determine their accuracy. I’ve chosen not to post when doing so is based on an emotional reaction. Information spreads like wildfire and before there is an opportunity to address the information, either to confirm, deny, or explain, an opinion is formed based on that information. Criticism before you know the outcome of others actions (read: politicians actions) is often just bias. Choose to begin the year with some silence before springing into action. I hear it is golden.

So this is it our first issue of 2016 and also our 99th fabulous issue! To tell you the truth, I’m having a terrible time writing this Editor’s note, as there are more than a few jokes within these pages that I’m trying not to think about as I keep losing my composure and cannot see the screen of my computer because of the tears running down my cheeks! If you do not feel happy inside after reading this very special 1st issue of 2016, I just would have to call you a Grinch – I’m sorry, but it would be true. And, not only will you feel so happy, your positive-ness and outlook on life should totally be changed because “There are Angels Among Us” and all the other related inspiring articles, including Positive Reinforcement, Journaling, Meditation, “Happilution”, Reflecting Back, Elves on the Shelf (out of work) and don’t forget Dysfunctional Friendships and “Adult Colouring”. Jock will take you back through events you have forgotten over the year, and quite a year it was!! We have worked our fingers to the bone to start your 2016 out right and given you all the ammunition to be better, stronger and more positive, and regardless of all our challenges ahead, we are all in this together. Do not take your life, health or loved ones for granted and don’t forget to start off 2016 with your best foot forward. New Year – New You!

Business Ideas that Made Millionaires The married man who created an affair website for married people
Ashleymadison.com is a dating website with a difference; it only accepts married people, or someone wanting to date a married person. The site’s slogan is “Life is short. Have an affair”. The site founder is a former attorney Noel Biderman, who is interestingly a happily married man. Although his mission can be perceived as very wrong (for the record: cheating is bad!), the fact that the site claims 3.2 million members suggests that it’s also doing something right.

The man who became a millionaire producing plastic wishbones
14 Spruce Park Dr, Strathmore, AB (403) 934-3802 Your customer doesn’t care how much you know until they know how much you care!
Who would ever think that there would be a market for fake plastic wishbones? Well… there is! Ken Ahroni was frustrated that every year only two people got to make a wish around the Thanksgiving table. So he decided to create LuckyBreak, a company that would make synthetic wishbones with the sound and feel of real dried turkey wishbones. Now the company makes 30,000 wishbones a day, selling custom-designed, imprinted units for personal, corporate and promotional use. Their sales are over $2.5 million per year.
The housewife who invented the microwaveable pillow
Kim Levine, invented Wuvit®, little bags that come in various patterns and provide soothing penetrating moist heat. Kim realized that if she put some corn in cloth, sewed it together and then put it in the microwave, a warm relaxing pillow would be created. She rushed to create the simple product idea with her sewing machine and her multi-million dollar empire was born! Initially, Kim thought the Wuvit® concept would just be great gift for her kids and for people in her local area. But soon she realized her idea had huge potential. When local parents started calling her in the middle of the night asking for another soothing pillow because their kids could not sleep without the Wuvit®, she knew she had a fabulous opportunity. She started going to local retailers and craft shows, and then eventually got a major break when Saks Department Store decided to put the Wuvit® products in their stores! Now she’s a millionaire and has even written a book about her retail endeavors!

The guy who sold pixels at a webpage for $1 million
Back in 2005, a 21-year-old student in England named Alex Tew launched The Million Dollar Homepage, through which he sold the pixels of a 1000×1000 grid for $1 each. Although it was an extremely simple idea, the unique project attracted enormous amounts of press coverage, and eventually earned $1,037,100 in a matter of months - the final slot on the page went for $38,100. It also spawned countless copycat websites that virtually all failed, since the idea was no longer novel.

One way to ensure you’re leading the pack is to create and follow a budget. Yes, boring I know. However, without a financial roadmap, you could very well be setting yourself up for the ultimate failure. Without a budget, you run the risk of spending more money than you can afford to spend - or worse - you might not be spending enough to grow and compete in today’s market.

Something else to keep in mind when you’re fiscally estimating is your expenditures. When we think of overhead we often think of employees, health benefits, printing costs, advertising, office supplies and all of those other nickel and dimers (and rightfully so) but one should also keep the costs of other kickbacks in mind as well. Your annual property taxes for example. Or your gas and electric bills, phone bills, credit interest rates and lease and/or rent increases; these costs are forever fluctuating, so it is my opinion that over-estimating the cost of these expenses is a sure way to stay out of the red at the end of the year. One issue that a lot of business owners get hung up on is, well, forgive my bluntness, but… being cheap. “You need to save. Cut costs here, cut costs there - don’t spend on that because you may need this...” and so on. Budgeting should not equate to strapping yourself into a financial straightjacket. Leaving yourself with just the bare minimum is nothing short of torture and we all know that’s not how the big get bigger. Finances should be a large part of your business plan, yes, but instead of using a budget as a restraint, it should be looked at more as a measuring tool to ensure that you are meeting your monetary goals.

that extra money you’ve saved - why not put it towards soliciting future ventures? Another time consuming dilemma that a lot of small business owners run into is the dreaded “books.” Keeping track of your invoices, manually allocating payments, creating invoices and accounting for every dime on an Excel spreadsheet - it’s hard on the mind and the timeline, which is also hard on your bottom line. After all, time is money right? So why not invest in an online tool such as QuickBooks or better yet, hire a bookkeeper to take care of those things for you? These options are available to you - and trust me, they will make your month-end much less stressful, which will leave you with more time to focus your energy on your customers. Having a business budget in place enables you to plan ahead, prioritize your funds and gauge whether your financial predictions are being met. It also enables you to make educated decisions to enhance your business operations with added clarity and efficiency - and what better way to reach business excellence than by being financially prepared? Do you have one food you could eat every single day? There are a couple of foods that come to mind for me, like king claw crab legs, steak with hollandaise sauce, turkey legs, scallops, gouda cheese, chocolate mousse and last but not least, BACON. It’s funny because I’m not keen on pork and normally never eat it at all for the exception of ham. But when it comes to bacon, that’s another story. The sizzling, crunchy salt and sweet of maple bacon are enough to make anyone’s mouth water... and have you ever made Bacon Crack? Also known as Bacon Saltine Cracker Candy, it is absolutely to die for. I’m sorry I have not shared this with you sooner. This is an easy recipe, and well… simply delicious!
BACON CRACK
BEST
1 1/2 sleeves saltine crackers 1 1/4 cups butter 1 1/4 cup light brown sugar 1 lb bacon Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a greased or sprayed rimmed baking sheet (16″ x 11″) and cover with foil or parchment so it also comes up the sides. Chop the bacon into bits and cook in a pan until crispy. Drain on paper towel and pat down to remove as much grease as possible, then set aside. Put down a single layer of crackers to cover the pan. In a saucepan, add the sugar and butter and heat until it has all melted and begins to boil. Be careful because this mixture is HOT. Give it a stir and when the syrup is boiling, continue to boil for 3 full minutes. After 3 minutes, pour the mixture, CAREFULLY (It is hot, remember!) over the crackers and place in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle the bacon all over. Allow to completely cool then break in to pieces. You’re going to love the brown sugar against the saltiness of the bacon, and the combination with the caramel. I’m so glad I have a pound of bacon in the refrigerator!!

Another one of my all-time favourite BACON recipes would have to be...
MILLION DOLLAR BACON
BEST
1 lb thick cut bacon 6 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or tin foil. Lay the bacon on the parchment paper and sprinkle with about half of the brown sugar. Sprinkle on the red pepper flakes, cayenne and cracked black pepper. Sprinkle the rest of the brown sugar on the top and then give it a good pat all over. Think of it as a rub that’s going to coat your bacon in candy-like goodness. You don’t really have to worry about coating the reverse side because as the bacon cooks, the sugary coating will run under it and coat the other side of the bacon, too. Then just pop it in the oven and bake for 20 – 30 minutes, until it reaches your desired crispiness. Done and done! The heat of all the peppers tempers out the brown sugar and makes for a really yummy brunch treat.

MARINATED SCALLOPS WRAPPED IN BACON
3/4 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 12 large sea scallops, halved 12 slices smoked bacon, halved 24 toothpicks 2 tablespoons brown sugar Stir together maple syrup, soy sauce, and Dijon mustard in a bowl until smooth. Add the scallops, and toss to coat. Cover bowl with plastic wrap, and marinate at least one hour or overnight. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with a sheet of aluminum foil or parchment paper. Arrange bacon pieces on baking sheet (You can put all the bacon on a cookie sheet. It really isn’t a problem to pull it apart.) Bake in preheated oven until some of the grease has rendered out of the bacon; it should still be very soft and pliable, about 8 minutes. Remove from baking sheet and pat with paper towels to remove excess grease. Drain or wipe grease from the baking sheet. Wrap each scallop piece with a piece of bacon, and secure with a toothpick and place onto baking sheet. Sprinkle the scallops with brown sugar. Bake in preheated oven until the scallops are opaque and the bacon is crisp (unless most of the grease has been drained from bacon, it will not be crisp but still very good), 10 to 15 minutes, turning once.

January Again
New year’s resolution season again. What can Ibreak this year? Truthfully, I’m not really much of a New Year’s Resolution maker. Last year I aimed low by resolving to “stick with the status quo” which, I’m happy to report, I achieved admirably, improving virtually nothing. Actually this really isn’t a horrible resolution for most people unless the status quo involves being a crack addict or something; in that case you might want to rethink more than just resolutions in your life - but that’s a whole other article written by someone much smarter than I. All of that aside, I figured I might want to aim for a slightly higher target this year and actually go for a little self-improvement. With that lofty-ish goal in mind, I took to the google and had a look for what the interweb considers great resolutions. My minutes of research led me to two “Top 10” type lists – one was the Top Ten Resolutions for 2015, the other the Top 10 Most Commonly Broken Resolutions from who knows when. Some year lacking basic willpower, I suppose. In the interest in not setting myself up for failure, I decided to look at the Top 10 good ones and compared them to the Top 10 broken ones, reasonably assuming a really good one would be one that didn’t appear on the broken list. Logical, right? A Top 10 choice that doesn’t routinely get broken before the hangover subsides - nothing but the best research methodology for my life changing decisions! With a process in place, I hit the two lists, in a quest for my 2016 strategy. None of this continued status quo stuff for me, change is in the air!
Top Ten New Year’s Resolutions for 2015
1. BECOME STRESS FREE – on the surface this seems like a good

thenewsyneighbour.com
plan, but it’s a bit vague. Become stress free, how? Should I start meditating? Take up some stress reducing hobby? What IS a stress reducing hobby? Maybe wear an elastic band on my wrist that I snap when I engage in stressful thinking? That sounds both stressful and hurtful. And, big surprise, this one is number 8 on the Broken List. I guess Stress Free isn’t for me. 2. LOSE WEIGHT – definitely a good resolution, but also the number 1 most broken one. That doesn’t bode well, so obviously best just skipped. Bullet dodged… 3. QUIT SMOKING – as a non-smoker, I’d have an edge on this one, but that’s probably cheating, soooo…. next… 4. INCREASE YOUR EDUCATION – this has some possibility. I do have to take some professional development each year for work that could count. Although that’s a requirement, not really a volunteer self-improvement thing, so there might be some cheating on this one, too. And it’s probably the same concept as number 3 on the Broken List, “Learn Something New”. Never mind, I shall remain clueless. 5. SAVE MONEY – nope, number 5 on the Broken List. Too bad, I should probably do more of this. Oh well, it’s on the Broken list, next! 6. EAT HEALTHIER – this just seems like a variation of “lose weight” but even the Broken List repeats it in position number 4. Clearly eating, diet and weight loss just aren’t meant to happen; can’t argue with the Broken List. 7. TO NOT HAVE A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION – resolving not to resolve? That seems like something that comes from the department of redundancy. Actually, it seems to edge close to “status quo”, although there’s probably a lofty explanation behind it that I’m missing. Pass. 8. GET GOOD GRADES – and if I was going to school, I’d be all over this! Next! 9. LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE – I learned how to count to 10 in Korean in 2015. That’s enough new language for me, thanks. Off my list you go! 10. STOP WATCHING SO MUCH PORN – really? THIS made it to the Top 10 Resolution list? People admitted they have enough of a porn problem that they have to resolve to stop it? Although, surprisingly, it’s not on the Top 10 Broken List, so maybe people are successful at it? Although for it to appear on the Broken List, I guess you’d be admitting you spend a lot of time…. well, anyhow, probably time to move on to… oh looky! The end of the list! Well. This quest for self-improvement isn’t as easy as one would think. To review, everything on the Top 10 Resolution list either appears on the Top 10 Broken Resolution list, or isn’t an issue that needs fixing in my world (sorry, no porn problem here…). So. Status quo for 2016, then? The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

It should be no surprise to most of you that there are little gems hidden throughout our communities that often come out to shine when they don’t think anyone is looking. In honour of these magnificent beings, we are proud to recognize one of Langdon’s own little jewels, Launa Austin. Launa was nominated by a fellow Langdonite in the community for going far above and miles beyond anyone’s call of duty - and this is why we love her: I have only known Launa for about two years, but in such a short time, I have found in her not only a wonderful neighbour, but an amazing friend. Launa is, without exaggeration, one of Langdon’s best kept secret little angels. She is the woman who is always balancing her time and compassion between her friends and family, her son’s classroom, the Langdon schoolboard, the town and the town’s people - and although she never asks for it, I would like to take this opportunity to give her the recognition she truly deserves. This past year has been a very hard one on us. Our beautiful daughter was diagnosed with a terminal illness and, unfortunately since then, we have run into a lot of different setbacks. Launa has become one of our family’s rocks. Whether she’s dropping off meals, house/dog-sitting during extended hospital stays or putting away our garbage bins, she always seems to keep our family in the forefront of her mind; words cannot express how grateful we are to have her in our lives. In fact, last Christmas Launa helped to fundraise for us, which really supported us over the holidays. And during the summer, when it was too smokey for my daughter to play outside, Launa left a little care package on our deck filled with Wii games and activity books to help keep us from going stir-crazy. She even delivered a pizza one night after seeing us, and our apparent exhaustion, at the store earlier in the day. And she does all of this without ever asking for anything in return. Launa is our amazing guardian angel and Langdon is so lucky to have her! Nicole MH

1) Read together every day, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Set up a time that works with your schedule: nap time, bath time, before bed. By doing this, you help to deepen the bond between you and your child.
4) Use books as a way of helping your child learn about the world around him. Read books about feelings, eating, dressing, toilet training etc. This will give the child more background knowledge of different situations he may encounter throughout his day.
IS IT IMPORTANT? Reading. When do we teach our children to read? Oftentimes parents/caregivers will wait until the child has reached school age to begin the reading process. It has been documented however, that the earlier a child is exposed to books the better they will do in school and it also encourages a child to become a lifelong learner. For some parents/caregivers, “teaching” their child to read seems like a daunting task given all the things that happen in a day. Our lives are full of work, school, extra curricular activities as well as chores and other household requirements. Reading is not something that can be taught all at once. It is a process. The earlier you can expose children to books and the written word, the more successful your child will be in the future. Preschool aged children as young as 9 months old can begin the lifelong process of reading. Preschoolers are very curious about the world around them and reading can be a great way to expand that world. The following is a comprehensive, but not exhaustive, list of simple activities that do not require a lot of time but can have a long lasting benefit for your child. thenewsyneighbour.com

2) Constantly talk to your children about the world around them. Use the proper names for everyday objects and ask the child lots of questions as well. 3) Show your enthusiasm for reading. If a child sees that you are excited about reading books, they will likely have a more positive response to story time with you.

5) Develop an awareness of the interests of your child. Gather books from the local library, or garage sales that support these interests. These can be fiction (story books) or non- fiction (factual books). Using a variety of books will enhance your child’s interest, as well as reading skills. Before a child reaches kindergarten, there are some emergent literacy skills that he should be able to demonstrate on a fairly consistent basis. • Books are read front to back. • Pictures should be right side up. • Reading is done from left to right. • The language of books is different from the spoken word. • Words have different sounds. • There are familiar and unfamiliar sounds. • Stories have a beginning, middle and end. Other basic concepts include: text is words written down, letters in a specific order form a word and there are spaces between words. There is so much information on the internet that addresses the topic of literacy, in this case, reading, specifically. Several websites to gather more information from are abcliteracy.ca, readingrockets.org, getreadytoread.org and kidshealth.org. These websites contain many more activities and articles focussed on reading and how to begin the process with your child. In conclusion, January 27th, 2016 is Family Literacy Day. think to acknowledge or praise their behaviour. Overlooking positive behaviours in your child can leave them feeling like failures, especially when you spend more time disciplining negative behaviours than noticing all of the positives. Look for opportunities to praise your child, and you will notice an increase in positive behaviours.
2
2. It boosts your child’s self-esteem.
A young child that expects their positive attributes to be overlooked can become an incredibly insecure young adult. Someone that does not receive positive reinforcement may eventually feel that what they do does not matter and that they are worthless. Everyone needs to know that their contributions matter. Regularly providing your child with positive reinforcement helps them to become more secure in their role within your family.
The Impact of
POSITIVE
REINFORCEMENT in Children
When raising children, there are typically two different methods used to help them mature. The first is discipline, which helps children recognize their limits and is used to correct negative behaviours. The second method, positive reinforcement, is often overlooked, but when it is practiced with consistency, many parents notice they do not need to discipline their child’s negative behaviour as often. Here are three reasons positive reinforcement is the unsung hero of raising happy children.
1
1. Everyone needs verbal affirmation.
Everyone loves the feeling of being told they did a good job. Oftentimes, your child may be modeling certain positive behaviours so regularly that it seems commonplace, and you simply don’t

your child make positive choices. 33. It helps
When children do not receive positive reinforcement, they are likely to become unmotivated. Positive affirmation of your child inspires them to try their hardest all the time. It is important to recognize that you only have your child for a small percentage of their life; if you do not offer praises when they deserve it now, they may eventually believe that the choices they make do not impact others. Help your child see the value in making the right choice early on, so when they are an adult and there is no one around to praise them, they still make the right choices instead of the easy choices. There are countless ways you can provide your child with affirmation for the positive choices they make. If you grew up with a family that was critical, it may feel unnatural for you to freely offer accolades to your young child at first. However, letting your child know that you value their positive actions now will go a long way in helping them to become happy and fulfilled adults later. Katelyn Campbell

The man who created a million dollar business of dog poop-scooping
The most noted pioneer in the poop-scooping business is Matthew Osborn, who runs Pooper-Scooper.com. He never knew that this business would one day make him a millionaire. Osborn got started back in 1987 when he opened Pet Butler in Columbus, Ohio. At the time, Osborn was working two full-time jobs and making less than $6 per hour at each. He had a wife, a daughter and a son on the way, and was desperate to make some extra money. He learned that there were about 100,000 dogs within 15 miles of his home. The business slowly took off, and despite the dirty work, Osborn says he enjoyed satisfying the customers and working outdoors in some of the nicest backyards in Ohio. Eventually, Osborn employed seven people and owned a fleet of six trucks serving about 700 regular customers. While Osborn may have put poop scooping on the map, Matt “Red” Boswell is taking it into the future. Boswell owns the Texas-based Pet Butler. Today, Pet Butler is the largest pet waste removal service in the country, and serves about 3,000 clients.

It’s Time To Start A Journal
how people express themselves, shop, socialize, conduct politics, study, entertain themselves and create. The Web now links hundreds of millions of people— billions?—producing the first inklings of a true global culture. The Web’s power as a communication device cannot be overstated; it’s hard to believe we didn’t always have it and this magazine would not even be possible without it.
I so wish I would have started a journal years ago and as every year goes by I think, why on earth have I not started my journal yet? There are so many, many changes, events, vacations and people who have passed through my life I now wish I had kept track of important dates and times of inspiration or even tiny things that seem unimportant at the time, but could have quite possibly changed the whole direction of my life. I was born in 1957 and when I think about all the huge events, inventions and changes that have happened over the last 50 years, it is staggering! The microwave oven in 1955, birth control was available the year I was born (one year earlier and I might not be here!)! 1958 was the 1st time you could fly on a commercial jet airliner; that has certainly changed the world! And what about video games in 1962? Can you believe the computer was developed in 1959 and in 1969, a whole 4 computers were linked! And then the World Wide Web was invented in 1989 as an Internet service available to the public, and it forever changed
What I’m getting at is if I had been journaling all these years, I would have all these events timestamped and a daily or even weekly journal of all the personal changes in my own life and the life of my family. But, as they say, it is never too late or too early. Now that I have my first grandchild I was thinking how cool it would be if he started journaling… and it is so easy! Choose a journal; you can even start with a spiral-bound notebook. But choosing a special book is more fun. Many bookstores carry very nice journals, or check out your favourite gift store! Splurge for some pencils with fun designs, coloured pencils, and art supplies. Journals don’t have to be strictly for writing; they can be used for art… a combination of both and more. They are a place to keep your ideas, to experiment, to collect, to share and to be inspired.
There are lots of ways to get your children started writing in their journals! Here are some ideas I found:
many different areas of learning, including math, science and social studies. For children who have a hard time expressing their needs verbally or making decisions about things, keeping a journal of their thoughts is a great way to help learn emotional organization. Even if all your child does is write about an interaction they had during the day, it’s worth it. It’s a storytelling tool; a place to learn how much information completes a story, what words work well to paint the picture of a story. It’s also a way to practice the mechanics of grammar and spelling. This type of journaling can: - Improve written communication. The more your child writes to prompts, the more your child’s writing skills will improve. Improve spelling and grammar. Though it’s not necessary to hold your child to a perfect spelling standard, expecting him to always spell his sight words correctly is one way to help him to spell them correctly all the time. - Improve reading skills. Kids imitate what they know. When you first start prompted journal writing with your child, you may find that his writing is structured a lot like his favourite books. He may even use some of the same catch phrases. The more he writes, the more likely he is to read in order to discover different voices and styles. The whole family could even create a Vacation Journal and have those memories for years to come.
For Younger Children
• Letters – sneak in and borrow your child’s journal. Write them a letter, and leave the journal on their pillow. They can write back and leave it on your pillow. • First Liners – write a crazy first line to a story in their journals and they have to finish the story. • Lists – Write headings like “Things I love to eat”, “things I love to do” and they do the rest. • Questions – What super power would you like to have? What would happen if horses could fly? • Beginnings of a Drawing – Draw one small item then write a question, like a hat – who wears this hat? They draw the rest of the picture and write about it. • Or, journaling can happen quietly on their own. Sometimes it can be a major creative event with the table piled high with supplies using letter stickers, letter stamps, water colour paints, markers, old photos, magazines, glue sticks – use your imagination! They can even use their journals for collections like a feather, an interesting leaf, flowers to press, a stamp, and postcards…almost anything. Just imagine looking through the journals at the end of the year to see and remember all the special things that happened that year; my goodness, I wish I had done this with my kids!
For Adults
For Older Children
There is no one “right” way to journal. Some people faithfully write accounts of daily life. Others keep nature journals with sketches of plants, animals, and landscapes accompanied by written description. Some keep creative journals in which they write down ideas. Others keep art journals, where text is accompanied by drawings and paintings. Getting started is the hardest part and I think that is why I’ve never been able to get started and stick with it. Here are some ideas I found just to get you started.
It is much easier for them to pour their creativity into a journal when they know no one is looking over their shoulder. Give your children opportunities to share their work if they wish, but don’t force them. Journaling is often a good activity for kids who are reluctant to write or, in some cases, reluctant to speak. The versatility of journaling means it can be incorporated into

NEW CRCA INITIATIVE! On Nov 17th, the City of Chestermere Human Services Advisory Board approved the funding for an “After School Adventures Program for Youth ages 12—15”! If you have a child age 12—15 who is not quite ready to stay home alone after school, then this supervised after school program is for you! With the help of this grant, we will be able to make this an affordable and fun program. We will be working on this program over the Christmas break and hope to have it up and running in January 2016.
My favourite way to spend the day is… If I could talk to my teenage self, the one thing I would say is… Make a list of 30 things that make you smile. The words I’d like to live by are… I couldn’t imagine living without… If my body could talk, it would say… What do you love about life? Using 10 words, describe yourself. Make a list of everything you’d like to SAY NO to. Make a list of everything you’d like to SAY YES to. Journaling helps us figure out who we are, what we need and what we want. It can help us make better decisions, and focus on the very things that support us in taking compassionate care of ourselves and others. They say life is a journey, not a destination and time stops for no one. A journey is filled with lessons, hardships, heartaches, joys, celebrations and special moments that will ultimately lead us to our destination, our purpose in life… wouldn’t it be cool if you had it all written down to remember? I’m sad I don’t! So get your kids journaling NOW and, like I said, it is never too late for you to get started, too!! A great way to start your New Year!!
Happy New Year!

Every once in a while, someone comes along and changes your whole perspective of humanity. In a world that we often see as cold and uncaring, we sometimes find secret little angels that help to heal the hearts of those around them.

Nancy Stairs-Farran is one of those angels. For those of you who don’t know her, Nancy has become a great pillar in the Strathmore community. Over the past 30 years, she and her husband have served as local real estate agents who have helped families of every generation find their perfect homes, all-the-while, anonymously supporting local families and children’s sports teams.

jobs in an effort to support the family but was struggling to earn enough to provide their children with the Christmas they’d hoped for. In the email, Peter asked Nancy if she might consider contributing to the family of seven over the holidays and, Nancy being Nancy, whole-heartedly agreed. Over the next few weeks, Nancy and numerous other sponsors spent their time and money shopping for several of the items on the girls’ Christmas wish lists to Santa. Choosing to remain anonymous, the Stairs-Farran family wrapped each gift they purchased in crisp, Christmas wrapping and sent them to the children, courtesy of great Saint Nick. “This family is dear to my heart,” says Nancy. “To wake up with these five beautiful daughters and not be able to see them... to be the loving wife, mother, caregiver and provider all at once - it can’t be easy. They may not have asked for our help, but they deserved it and we were happy to be a part of their Christmas - which is why this year, my family and I have decided to lend our help to them again.” In 2014, over 30 Strathmore families received support from amazing angels like Nancy and her family. This small group of kind souls assisted locals from all walks of life. Single mothers, to the ill and the underemployed; families in the area received everything from a complete Christmas dinner, with turkey and all of the fixings, to school supplies and clothing (as well as toys, of course). “Helping these families over the holidays is incredibly gratifying,” explains Nancy. “I don’t need recognition, the only thing I hope for is that, should there come a time that these individuals are able to, they pay it forward to another family who may be in need of a hand up.”

I have got to think that I am not the only person in this world that has a fear of travel. Lots of people are afraid to leave the comfort of their home, or get on an airplane. We all need to get away, leave the cell phone at home, have a few cocktails, and not think about work, obligations, or responsibility. What about the cost of travel? But still we need a break! We need some stress relief; we need a getaway, without the pressure of spending a lot of money. I am here to share a secret: instead to flying to a foreign destination, why not Travel Alberta? I truly believe we have the most beautiful province in Canada (I know a lot of Easterner’s would never agree!), but if you are looking for beauty – true summer or winter beauty, Alberta is the place to be. Just let me mention one spot in particular that still holds a special place in my memory. This place of beauty is JASPER, ALBERTA. I had the experience of a life time visiting Jasper for Christmas last year – they do it up right and “The Jasper Park Lodge” is a place of strength and warmth. The 20 foot Christmas tree in the Emerald Lounge pulls you to it and you just stand in awe of its beauty. You find yourself seated beside the massive wood burning fireplace where you want to curl up in the big cozy chairs with dreams of sugar plums dancing in your head. It is a place of warmth, and wonder. We stayed in a cottage on the edge of Lac Beauvert, with the view of the Lodge, with the steaming hot pool just outside and all the incredible lights glistening off the trees and the shimmer of the crystal snow accompanied by the breathtaking view of the guardians covered, including Whistler Mountain, covered in snow, surrounding the whole expanse of the experience… and, of course, a glass of champagne in hand. Not to mention the food… which is beyond description and your palette will never again have the experience of this exceptional fine dining; the cordon blue of dining delight and words as culminating, incomparable and “sans pareil” are used to explain the pleasure you will find dining. And I’m not exaggerating!! We spent the day skiing Whistler Blackcomb Mountain and the evening enjoying the lights, comfort, cocktails and, of course, the food. Trust me “Jasper Park Lodge” is a vacation you will remember forever. If you are thinking about traveling to Jasper, make sure to check out www.jasper.travel/things-to-do Kathryn Hartwell

Hard of Hearing?
Bert feared his wife Peg wasn’t hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem. The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. ‘Here’s what you do,’ said the Doctor, ‘stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.’ That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was In the den. He says to himself, ‘I’m about 40 feet away, let’s see what happens.’ Then in a normal tone he asks, ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?’ No response. So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, ‘Peg, what’s for dinner?’ Still no response. Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his Wife and asks, ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?’ Again he gets no response. So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?’ Again there is no response. So he walks right up behind her. ‘Peg, what’s for dinner?’ ‘For crying out loud, Bert, for the FIFTH time, CHICKEN!’

DysFUNctional
Friendships
So I have this friend (who doesn’t have that friend?) who has dated every kind of socially, economically and intelligently challenged man that our greater being could have possibly created. From cheaters and drug dealers to fugitive harborers and the unemployed. She has the absolute worst taste in men - and that’s what makes her fun.

Anyways, she and one of her bad boyfriends split up a few weeks ago (and then she lost her job), so we decided to have a nice girls night out, but we were broke (just as we have always been - and that’s what makes us fun). Regardless, I picked her up and we headed to the Tim Horton’s drive-thru. We ordered our teas and sat in the parking lot and laughed about how life had crapped on us once again, just as we always do (and that’s why no one else thinks we’re fun) - but something was missing this time; Christmas, the festivities and lights, carolers and smiling faces - we were missing that. So, we did what anyone else would do. We drove to Ikea.

Yes, this is what the fun people, who are in the mood for the holidays, do. Trust me. I’m one of them. Anyways, we sat in the parking lot gossiping for an hour or so (next to what looked like a 12’ unicorn sitting outside the front entrance) until once again, we felt like we were missing something. We went into Ikea, where we looked admiringly upon the stressed out mothers with their angered children, the elderly trying to climb the 2 flights of stairs and under-enthusiastic husbands being towed along by their wives. The sound of holiday cheer played overhead as the Christmas lights shimmered on all of the artificial trees. We looked at each other and within an instant, we both knew what the other was thinking: bed time! The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Come And Check Out Our Great Winter Clothing!
Nope, get your minds out of the gutter. We both pushed through the swinging gates at the bottom of the stairs and raced to the top (I won - that’s what makes her think I’m not so fun) and bolted to the first cozy bedroom display with a fireplace. We hopped on either side of the bed, fluffed our pillows, laid back and started talking in our infamous British accents. We contemplated world affairs, like starving children and Bruce Jenner (err… Caitlyn), then we giggled a while about how one of her exes was hiding a criminal in her house for a week and, unbeknownst to her, the police were staking out her place the entire time, and how her last boyfriend said he was going on vacation and never came back. Then it got deep. We started to wonder: has anyone else ever looked at those people on the side of the highway and thought, “how did you get here?” Like seriously - of all the places they could be, they’re right there - in the middle of nowhere. Where are you going? Where did you come from? What is your plan? And just when I thought the night couldn’t get any better, she sneezed - and crapped herself. Now she swears it was just a minor “fart” (and I wasn’t inclined to look) but all I know for sure is: we ran out of that Ikea store faster than what could have quite possibly been running down her leg. My beautiful, funny and most sincere friend in the world had just lost total control of her bowels - and I loved it. The moral of the story is: if you don’t have a dysFUNctional friend like I do, then you need to run out and get one, because without ever experiencing a story similar to that of an Ikea bed shart, you haven’t truly lived. THE CHRONICLES of Larry and Roger
www.jenericay.com /jenericay
A Pair of Diabetic Feet Hi! I’m Larry. I am, undoubtedly (wink wink), the better half of a great, great set of Twins. A PAIR OF DIABETIC FEET. We are very different, my brother, Roger and I, much like the left and right sides of the brain. I am the left side of the equation, the left foot! I am funny, yet logical. I am analytical and mathematical, I enjoy the facts and I tend to like to control the conversation (toothy grin). My brother Roger, well, he completes me. He is the right side and right foot in our relationship. Unlike me, Roger is very emotional. He tends to be imaginative, creative and a holistic type thinker. The really great thing about Roger is that he tends to look at the whole picture first, and then breaks it all down to details. We do, however, complement each other very well, and make a terrific partnership, through good and bad.

Roger and I were talking the other day. We decided that we were going to put together a New Year’s Resolution… how much fun is that? Everyone does it, don’t they? Well, we will too. It sounds like the rage in New Year’s Resolutions is to make a commitment towards better health and then try to work oneself towards that goal. Some humans succeed, we hear, and some…well they just go on to try again next year. In preparation for the discussion on how to proceed, I did some research, of course. Here is what I know: • Your feet are not replaceable; they must last a lifetime. • Foot or Leg Amputation could happen to you. • Diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputations. • Every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world, a limb is lost as a consequence of diabetes. • Toe and partial foot amputations are common. • Amputation rates are greater with increasing age, in males compared with females, and among African and Hispanic Americans. • More than half of those could have been prevented by good blood sugar control, better preventative foot care and better care of foot ulcers. I went on to my favourite website of all time. It is called the Canadian Diabetes Association Website. If you are diabetic, you should really check it out!! It has so much information. The address is www. diabetes.ca.

THAT IS ME!! ME!! ME!! And so much more, but it is all about ME!! and Roger!! Daily foot care (Reference: Canadian Diabetes Association) As always, prevention is the best medicine. A good daily foot care routine will help keep your feet healthy. Start by assembling a foot care kit containing nail clippers, nail file, lotion, and a non-breakable hand mirror. Having everything you need in one place makes it easier to follow this foot care routine every day: 1. Wash your feet in warm (not hot) water, using a mild soap. Don’t soak your feet, as this can dry your skin. 2. Dry your feet carefully, especially between your toes. 3. Thoroughly check your feet and between your toes to make sure there are no cuts, cracks, ingrown toenails, blisters, etc. Use a hand mirror to see the bottom of your feet, or ask someone else to check them for you. 4. Clean cuts or scratches with mild soap and water, and cover with a dry dressing suitable for sensitive skin. 5. Trim your toenails straight across and file any sharp edges. Don’t cut the nails too short. 6. Apply a good lotion to your heels and soles. Wipe off excess lotion that is not absorbed. Don’t put lotion between your toes, as the excessive moisture can promote infection. 7. Wear fresh clean socks and well-fitting shoes every day. Whenever possible, wear white socks – if you have a cut or sore, the drainage will be easy to see.

foods and avoiding toxins. We have to come to the sobering conclusion that decades of mistreatment, known or not, has created a body debt that cannot be reversed by a simple change of ones habits. It needs to incorporate very specific actions and protocols to pay off the body debt, and from that point forward, your new healthy lifestyle will serve you well.
Natural Options
Derek Henry, B.Kin, is a highly revered holistic health coach and world renowned natural health blogger from Kelowna, BC who created Healing the Body to help people understand the fundamental principles and intimate details to exceptional health. His popular wellness guides, coaching programs, and educational courses gives people step by step solutions to achieve a healthier body and mind, while empowering them to maintain that lifestyle on their own accord. If you would like to learn more about what he can do holistically to improve your health, check out his website, www.healingthebody.ca
Body Debt
You see, you can’t just paint over a wall that is rotten and full of termites and expect it to be structurally sound. In the same vein, you can’t just decide to eat healthier and ignore your body debt and expect for things to be strong foundationally. It’s just not how it works. So in order to live a healthy life, you do need to address your eating habits and other factors, BUT you also need to tackle your body debt and knock down the principal in order to avoid paying interest on it for the rest of your life.
Toxic Load
Things will NEVER be close to normal in your body until you can grasp this very simple principle, and address it systematically.
Malnourishment
Living in a world of continually tilled soils that are treated with various chemicals, our food supply has become degraded to the point that a lot of our food has up to 50% less nutrients than it did 50 years ago.
Malnourishment Malabsorption
This compromised soil, which has been largely stripped of crucial vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and beneficial bacteria, can no longer supply us with the nutrients our body requires in order to function properly and be free of disease.
Stress
When the body becomes nutrient deficient, simple processes become difficult and some shut down altogether, creating glitches and stagnancy that has a direct effect on how you feel and operate on a daily basis. Many of people’s health problems originate in a simple nutrient deficiency, and if they understood which ones they were missing, they could undertake therapeutic dosages through specific foods and supplementation in order to bring it relatively quickly up to speed.
5 Lifestyle Factors You Can’t Ignore If You Want To Be Healthy There are many processes your body undertakes on a daily basis in order to keep you functioning normally. Unfortunately, these processes have been hampered, which has resulted in a lot of pain, suffering, and mental anguish. In order to live a healthy life, we need to come to grips that we don’t live in the same world that people did 50 years ago. Things have changed dramatically, and we need to be much more proactive in order to avoid untimely pain, disease, and even death. In order to even begin the healing process, we have to have a basic understanding of the factors our body has been forced to deal with and how that affects our ability to live a healthy life.
Body Debt
Body debt is quite simply the damage incurred internally that has not been rectified and has you paying interest on it every day through compromised function of key systems like your immune, hormonal, skeletal, mental, and nervous systems. As a result, your body becomes easily contaminated and is continually dealing with the residual effects through common annoyances like food allergies, headaches, poor sleep, muscle and joint pain, anxiety, depression, blood sugar imbalances, digestive problems, constipation, skin issues, and much more. What most people don’t realize is that in their noble goal to get healthy, it isn’t as simple as turning to cleaner and more nourishing

It’s amazing how easily someone can start healing their body through the simple identification of largely absent nutrients and replacing them through specific food and supplementation protocols.
Malabsorption
It is one thing to get the appropriate nutrients into your body, and often quite another to have them properly absorbed in your intestinal system so they can be delivered to various areas of the body where they can do their work. Malabsorption is a serious issue and has become more profound due to the proliferation of over the counter and prescription drugs, antibiotics, mercury poisoning (largely through dental fillings and vaccinations), and stress. In the case of prescription drugs, even taking them for a very short period of time (3 months or longer) can affect your intestinal tract through the development of an unhealthy biofilm (or plaque) that resists the absorption of nutrients. In order to live a healthy life, one must strip that unhealthy biofilm and reseed with beneficial bacteria so the healthy foods you begin eating will deliver the appropriate levels of nutrients to your body through proper absorption.
Toxic Load
Anyone who has decided to become healthier has typically addressed the toxins present in the food, air, and water so the intake The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

is minimized. This is a smart move, as toxins are a major factor in low energy, ageing, and all disease processes. However, stopping the intake of toxins does not relieve you of your toxic burden. Consider the following example. You are sitting in a bathtub that is slowly filling up with toxic water. As time passes, you soak up these various toxins through your skin, and the water level gets higher, and approaches the edge of the tub. For some, it starts to overflow and this triggers signals (symptoms) from your body that something is going horribly wrong and it can’t be dealt with in its current state. You respond to helping the body recover by bailing out water with a shot glass, but the tap is still turned on and the toxins keep flowing in as fast as or faster than you can get rid of them. For others, you recognize some signals early, and you decide to eliminate as many toxins you are aware of and that slows down the tap. Over time you manage to work down the water level in the tub, but the slow flow also works against you enough that you get tired before you can ever make it close to emptying the tub. What do you need to do to stop this toxic bath, and get yourself out of danger? You need to pull the plug! People often forget the years of damage done that can’t be rectified through a simple avoidance of toxins. Although that is a smart move in the right direction, it does nothing to address the toxic load lodged in your body, which needs to be specifically removed in order to be truly healthy.

Stress is a well-known killer, yet many people seem to ignore the fact that they are dealing with it on a daily basis, to a point that it becomes chronic and debilitates your body. Stress creates a state of contraction and an acidic reaction that upsets the normal functioning of the muscles and the body’s delicate pH balance. Not only that, but a body that is in a chronically stressed state has difficulty in absorbing nutrients and also negatively affects the immune system, your main line of defense against pathogenic organisms and disease.
Take Time for You Look good - feel better .. UV or Sunless Tanning will achieve a sun-kissed glow.
Until you fully understand how stress affects you, and how to deal with it efficiently, it will slowly wear you down and ultimately is the trump card that can initiate disease and ultimately take you out. So understand the signs of more serious stress, and negate it appropriately.
If you don't take care of you - who will?
Once you are able to effectively address each of these areas, your body will take the appropriate action to heal itself. Derek Henry

Is There A Point to This Meditation Stuff? There was a time that I had no idea what meditation was. Not too long ago, actually! I had been practising yoga, which I would understand later is a form of moving meditation, for a few years, but had yet to be introduced to any formal form of meditation. In fact, given my personality, I think that if anyone had tried to describe what meditation was and what it took, I most likely would have scoffed at the practice. I could barely sit through dinner, let alone sit still staring at the wall with nothing to do.
tice, I do understand. I understand now that meditation has peeled back the layers of my personality to reveal the deeper truth of who I am – or in the very least, I have begun this process enough to know that I want to keep it up. Meditation is now part of my daily life, allowing for a bit of ebb and flow. Some months and years I am immersed in it, drawing solace every time I enter that space. At other times I don’t practise so much, but before too long I am drawn back.
When my youngest began grade school, I decided to become a yoga teacher and received my teacher training manual. Bookwork – philosophy, history, holy writings, anatomy and physiology – all helped me to realize that this “exercise” that I enjoyed so much had a little more to it. Part of our preparation for the immersion part of our education was training. Every day we were expected to practice asanas (postures), and to meditate.
Breathing deep, practising a state of allowance has taught me that I am not these thoughts in my head. I am the Watcher of the thoughts. In releasing the exhale, I am learning I can let go of the thoughts that do not serve my higher good. By nurturing a breath that flows steady and smooth, no holds or hitches, I am nurturing a state of being that has neither resistance nor grasping at the ever changing variables of life. I am not at the mercy of my wants, I am the Witness of my desiring. By trusting there will be another breath to draw, I am learning to be faithful and courageous on my chosen path. By practising watching my breath quietly every day, I am able to come closer to my own personal truth.
The only instruction we received for this home practice of meditation was a 4 page written article that had enough repetition for me to grasp that my breath was important for the practice. It went on to describe different techniques – none of which made any sense to me... japa mala, tratak, lakhita japa... I bet it makes you do the same thing – my eyes rolled into my head and it all turned to sounds like the Swedish chef makes. But with nothing to lose, I followed the instructions. Place a holy image or candle in front of me to allow my eyes to rest upon, and begin to watch the flow of my breath. Do this for a set amount of time every day. So I did the best I could. By the time we got to the portion of our training with actual instruction, I was desperate to know – WHAT WAS THE POINT? I remember my teacher looking at me gently and saying “There is no point, Becky. Nowhere you are trying to get to. Just watch your breath and soon you will understand.” Not what I was hoping to hear. I had 2 young boys, 2 jobs, and now this teacher training – I just didn’t have time to sit around doing nothing. I mean, who does?? But over these many years now since I have stuck with the prac-

I once heard it said that prayer is talking to God, and meditation is listening to His answers. Regardless of your chosen path of connection to the greater good, that is a beautiful way to look at it. Maybe there is no point to meditation, but I am ok with that now. I understand. Namaste, Becky

What I’m sharing above is those moments of motivation that often get lost a few days or weeks into the New Year. So why bother then, you ask, if my commitment is going to fizzle out anyway? Here is why. Every resolution is tied internally to something that creates happiness within you. Perhaps your resolution is being healthier, increasing your wealth or launching a new direction in your career this year. So, for example, you say, “This year I’m going to be healthier”. This is a pretty broad statement with little connection to what about being healthier would make you happy. When we consciously tie our resolutions to our happiness, it’s like building a bridge and being able to get to the other side. The difference is, instead of being happy once we cross the bridge, our bridge stands for our happiness. The bridge is what gets us there. The bridge is what keeps us connected to our resolution. Without the bridge, we are unhappy. So this year, as you create goals and resolutions, first build your bridge. Build your happiness bridge.
What would bring me the most happiness in 2016?
Your happiness bridge outlives moments of motivation. Your happiness bridge allows you to tap into an internal source of self-fuelling. Motivation can come and go, especially when we are unhappy. If we create resolutions for ourselves from a place of something we don’t like about ourselves, we are likely to fail. Know that failure is not a bad thing. Failure helps you fine tune and get in absolute alignment with what you truly desire.
Happilution It’s a happiness resolution Happiness evolution Happiness solution
To create a resolution that is empowering, start with asking yourself these questions: What about this resolution would make me happy? How is this tied to my happiness? What about this resolution is already happening in my life? The answers to those questions are the elements of your happiness bridge. Journal on these questions. Share your answers with a friend or work with a coach to get crystal clear and a new perspective on your answers. Take your 2016 New Year Resolution to an even higher level by including one of these themes as your happiness bridge: 1. Self-care 2. Self-love 3. Self-talk
As we create our New Year Resolutions, we often think of material things we would like in the New Year or perhaps goals we once wished for last year (or maybe for many years in a row now). A little bit of “why bother trying again” perhaps runs through one’s mind. Maybe for you, it’s more like “ya let’s do this! New Year! New me! Everyone else has resolutions, this is my year!!”
Have fun creating your Happilution a.k.a. Happiness Resolution!

It all started when I purchased a fancy foot spa off my favourite garage sale site in Strathmore. My feet get so darn dry in the winter and there is nothing better than a nice long foot soak while watching your favourite movie – am I right? So to make this time of pleasure even more pleasurable, I thought I should be adding some soothing oils or Epsom salts to the water, so, as usual, onto the internet I go to do my research on the most beneficial products to use and I was astounded on all the information I found on using Epsom Salts – not just for soaking your feet, BUT, holy cow just the 100 other things you can do with this amazing salt! Did you know that Epsom salt was named for a bitter saline spring at Epsom in Surrey, England? It is not actually salt, but a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. Long known as a natural remedy for a number of ailments, Epsom salt has numerous health benefits, as well as many beauty, household and gardening-related uses. Studies have shown that magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin, making Epsom salt baths an easy and ideal way to enjoy its amazing health benefits. Firstly, magnesium plays a number of roles in the body, including regulating the activity of over 325 enzymes, reducing inflammation, helping muscle and nerve function and helping to prevent artery hardening. Sulfates help improve the absorption of nutrients, flush toxins and help ease migraine headaches. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

It seems the wonders of Epsom salt have been well known for hundreds of years and unlike other salts, Epsom salt has beneficial properties that can soothe the body, mind and soul. Some of the countless health benefits include relaxing the nervous system, curing skin problems, soothing back pain and aching limbs, easing muscle strain, healing cuts, treating cold and congestion, and drawing toxins from the body. One of the simplest ways to ease stress and stress-related problems is to soak in a tub full of hot water with a few cups of Epsom salt.
Do not use soap, as it will interfere with the action of the salts. Try to rest for about two hours afterwards. If you have arthritic joints, move them as much as possible after an Epsom salt bath to prevent congestion in the joints. Magnesium ions also relax and reduce irritability by lowering the effects of adrenaline. They create a relaxed feeling, improve sleep and concentration, and help muscles and nerves to function properly. An Epsom salt bath is known to ease pain and relieve inflammation, making it beneficial in the treatment of sore muscles, bronchial asthma and migraine headaches.
EPSOM SALTS
We all know stress it a very bad thing and it drains the body of magnesium and increases levels of adrenaline. When dissolved in warm water, Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin and replenishes the level of magnesium in the body. The magnesium helps to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. Research shows that magnesium also increases energy and stamina by encouraging the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy packets made in the cells. Experts believe that bathing with Epsom salt at least three times a week helps you to look better, feel better and gain more energy. Just add 2 cups to your tub and for the added benefit of moisturizing y o u r s k i n , add 1/2 cup olive oil or baby oil.

DENTAL CLINIC
Your skin is a highly porous membrane and adding the right minerals to your bathwater triggers a process called reverse osmosis, which actually pulls salt out of your body, and harmful toxins along with it. Whether you like a relaxing soak or wish to enhance your beauty effortlessly, making Epsom salt a part of your daily routine can add a whole lot of goodness to your way of life. If you are pregnant or have any health concerns, check with your doctor before using Epsom salts. Here is the part I like; I can soak my tired aching feet in my foot spa with half a cup of Epsom salt to soften my feet and it will even neutralize foot odour. Just add 1/2 cup of Epsom salt to the warm water, relax and soak feet for 20 minutes. If you like, rub away any calluses using a pumice stone. Dry feet, then add two drops of peppermint essential oil to your favourite natural moisturizer, like shea or coconut butter, and rub in thoroughly to lock in the moisture. If that isn’t enough, there are more benefits of Epsom salts: • Athlete’s Foot - soak feet in an Epsom salt bath to help relieve the symptoms of Athlete’s Foot. • Remove splinters - soak affected skin area in an Epsom salt bath to draw out the splinter. • Treat toenail fungus - soak your affected toes in hot water mixed with a handful of Epsom salt three times a day. • Soothe sprains and bruises - add 2 cups Epsom salt to a warm bath and soak to reduce the pain and swelling of sprains and bruises. • Ease discomfort of gout and reduce inflammation by adding 2-3 teaspoons of Epsom salts into a basin and immersing the

Apply this mixture to the blackheads with a cotton ball. • Remove foot odour - mix a half cup of Epsom salt in warm water and soak your feet for 10 minutes to remove bad odour, sooth achy feet, and soften rough skin. • Remove hairspray - combine 1 gallon of water, 1 cup of lemon juice, and 1 cup Epsom salt. You can even use Epson salt in your home: • Clean bathroom tiles - Mix equal parts Epsom salt and liquid dish detergent and use as a scrub on bathroom tile. • Prevent slugs - sprinkle Epsom salt on or near interior entry points to prevent slugs. • As a hand wash - mix Epsom salt with baby oil and keep by the sink for an effective hand wash. • Clean detergent build-up in washing machines; fill the machine tub with hot water, add Epsom salt, and run an agitate/soak/ agitate cycle to dissolve detergent build-up (please consult your machine’s instruction manual for specific instructions). I bought a huge container of Epson salts at my favourite downtown drugs store in Strathmore (Value Drug Mart!) and I now soak my feet at least three times a week and I feel fabulous!! Need To Replace a Missing Tooth? From Dental Implants, Bridges and Partial Dentures, to Full Dentures – there’s definitely more than one option for replacing a missing tooth or teeth. One option that isn’t always talked about is ‘do nothing’. If a missing tooth isn’t negatively impacting your bite or dental health, then you may want to consider not doing treatment, or at least taking your time to explore all your options before selecting a treatment plan. What’s involved with a Dental Bridge? A proven and trusted method for replacing a single or multiple teeth is a dental bridge. The term bridge is used to describe how teeth are fabricated to span an area where teeth are missing. Suitable to be used in the front or back of the mouth – a dental
bridge can be an affordable and efficient option. But like all things that seem too good to be true, there is a downside to bridge placement - and that’s having to incorporate healthy teeth in to the treatment. Natural teeth that are on either side of the missing tooth are prepped for crowns and attached to each crown is a false tooth (pontic) – this creates the bridge. Some may feel that crowning perfectly healthy teeth is a fair trade for an affordable, functional and esthetic solution. Dental Implants Unlike a bridge that incorporates adjacent teeth in to the treatment – the placement of a dental implant does not require the treatment of other teeth. A titanium screw is placed directly in to the jaw bone of the missing tooth and is left to integrate with surrounding bone tissue. Once osseointegration is confirmed, the implant can be restored with a crown – approximately three months after the implant has been placed. Performed by Oral Surgeons, Periodontists and General Dentists Certified in Implant placemen, this option for replacing a tooth provides a fixed and long-term solution that many patients are looking for. Dentists encourage patients to explore all treatment options before deciding how to replace a tooth, as choosing a solution that works well both in the short and long-term is the ultimate goal. On a Natural 2015 & Looking Forward to 2016 As I sit and type the words on the page, I go back to remembering this year that was 2015. We all need to reflect on the past, but at the same time it is important not to dwell on it! Dwelling will lead to nothing good, while taking time to reflect gives us a sense of where we have been and where would be like to be. It provides an opportunity to measure how much we have grown as a person and what we need to let go and release. It also gives us a chance to say, “Thank you” to all the people who have touched us in some way in the past year. All of these things are healthy and healing.

1. This year was by far the fastest year I have experienced in my life thus far! Where has it gone? What have I done? What have I learned? What do I need to change? 2. So much has happened, especially with loved ones leaving us and going to heaven. We must never forget the wonderful memories they leave behind. It is important to remember NOT to take any of your loved ones for granted, so make sure you let them know how much they mean to you and give them a hug from time to time.

3. I have noticed changes within myself and know that I am not that same person I was a year ago. I am grateful for this, but also miss that other person from time to time. My way of looking at life has altered; I look after myself more, which is great, and I view my relationships differently. My daughters are growing up so fast and becoming great women who are strong and can stand on their own. Professionally, I have grown by taking interesting, new courses.

Some were on “Self-Massage”; April was “Wedding Plans Stressing You Out? Self-Massage Can Help!” or in July’s “Self-Massage & Stretching Help Prevent Injures!”. A few covered “Stress” such as September’s “Reduce School Stress” or for November and December’s “Holiday Stress 101 –Part 1 & 2.” Then there where articles about Self Care like August’s “Sleep Hygiene is a Family Affair” or June’s “Attention All Men – How Important Is Your Health?” or March’s “How Healthy Is Your Conscious or Sub-conscious Mind?”

and February’s “Celebrating Self Love” or “Smudging, Clearing & Protecting Your Space”, but my favourite was for May – “Have You Hugged Your Mother Today?” As you start the New Year, take some time to reflect. Looking back at all the experiences and realizing that we are not the same as we were. This a great way to heal most of the hurts of the past year, then you can go forward to what is in store for 2016. We all want to know our futures and some of us even go get our fortune told to us, but does anyone really know the future? Not really. For we are the only ones who can write, create, imagine, act on, project and experience the future and in order for a bright future we must also do some forgiving of one self and then others. Show love to ourselves and those around us; and help out whenever we can and we should remember to not judge one another. I have decided to go into this New Year of 2016 with a warm heart, helping hands, sharing laughter with family and friends, more movement, healthier food choices, and try to do my best in whatever I decide to do at the time. I am also going to allow myself more time to help teach others, help guide them to grow and learn more about themselves. Most importantly is for me to work on balancing my business life with my personal life and family life and giving a little more time for me! What are you going to do to help your future for 2016?

Goodbye 2015 and Hello 2016!
You had your moments 2015, but you also had your share of scandal, disappointment and heartbreak! Christened the “Year of Sport” in Canada, 2015 will be remembered for the successful Pan Am Games in the GTA area. An exciting Women’s FIFA World Cup and Gold for Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships. Unfortunately, we will also remember 2015 for corruption at the highest level in soccer. Deflategate in the NFL and yet another doping scandal for athletics in Russia. We witnessed the thrill of victory as the Chicago Black Hawks established a modern day dynasty with another Stanley Cup championship. We experienced the agony of defeat as the Flames and the Stampeders both lost in playoff action. We saw new stars emerge like 22 year old golfer Jordan Spieth and the kid they call Johnny Hockey. We said goodbye to some of our heroes like Yogi Berra, Frank Gifford, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Kenny Stabler, Steve Mondator and maybe the greatest Stampeder ever Wayne Harris. 2015 really was about the good, the bad and the bizarre! Former Stampeder QB Henry Burris found the fountain of youth leading the Ottawa Redblacks to a surprise appearance in the 103rd Grey Cup Game in Winnipeg. The Toronto Blue Jays captured a nation with an amazing run to the post season for the first time in over 20 years. We got a glimpse of the future as the Calgary Flames unveiled plans for a new field house, football stadium and hockey arena. We saw a horse win the Triple Crown for the first time since 1978. Jon Cornish, the best Canadian running back in CFL history was forced to retire because of concussions. Just days after winning the Grey Cup, head coach Chris Jones bolts from the Edmonton Eskimos to join the Rider Nation. A disgruntled football player (through his agent) calls the Stampeders the “worst” organization in the league and a rabbit steals the show at Labour Day. I think you get the picture. So what will 2016 bring? Hopefully health, happiness and a whole lot of joy but it will also feature “Faster, Higher, and Stronger.”

The biggest sporting event on the planet, Rio 2016. The Summer Olympics as the world comes together in Brazil in August. Canada’s goal in Rio is win more than 18 medals and finish top 12 finish in the overall medal standings. Certainly achievable as 18 was our medal count in the last two Summer Games in Beijing and London. For that to happen, Canada’s divers, swimmers, rowers, wrestlers and paddlers must come through, augmented by some track and field, cycling and trampoline medals. These sports are funded heavily through the Own the Podium program. The athlete every Canadian will be watching and cheering in Brazil is sprinter Andre De Grasse. The 21 year old from Scarborough, Toronto became a house hold name sprinting to gold at the Pan American Games, the he followed that up with an amazing bronze medal performance at the World Championships. He may be a little too young and raw to dethrone the fastest man in the World Usain Bolt, but there is no other athlete in this country who will come into these games with a bigger fanfare. Rugby and Golf will also return to the Olympics in Rio and our men’s basketball team will get one last chance to qualify in the summer. If they get in, they will be a threat for the podium. What other sporting events am I looking forward to in 2016? Super Bowl 50 on February 7th in Santa Clara, California. Forget the Roman numerals as Super Bowl L (Roman numeral for 50) looks plain stupid. Will Tom Brady and the New England Patriots be back to defend? Or will we see a new AFC champion? The Ryder Cup returns to American soil as golf fans will be out in full force at the Hazeltine National Golf Club late September in Minnesota. Team USA captain Davis Love will have to figure out a way to beat the Europeans. The 104th Grey Cup Championship returns to Toronto in November but this time in a much smaller venue, BMO Field. Toronto last hosted the game in 2012 when the Stampeders lost to the Argos in the 100th championship game. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Seasonal Layoffs Impact the
Elf Community A little bit of everything Gaylene Smith is a Career Coach with McBride Career Group in Strathmore and while she isn’t sure if she will end up on the naughty or nice list she does wish you all a very blessed 2016. Gaylene can be reached by phone or email. 403-934-4305 gsmith@ mcbridecareergroup.com
Every New Year, an entire industry of hard working individuals finds themselves unemployed. For the entire month of December, this group of seasonal employees puts in long, hard hours, willingly taking on any task asked of them. However, as soon as the gifts are unwrapped, they are given the pink slip without so much as a thank you. I am, of course, talking about the Elves on the Shelves.
to break down into elves making snow angels out of the coffee whitener. Now as a Career Coach, I have a few words of advice for the Elf community. It’s the same advice I would give anyone who finds themselves on the receiving end of a Letter of Termination. First things first, apply for Employment Insurance. If you qualify, it will give you a bit of breathing room while you seek another source of income. Next, get your paperwork in order. Is your resume up to date? Does it highlight your strengths? Get that cover letter written as well. Skills missing from your resume? Take a class. There are numerous places where you can take basic computer classes to ensure you can excel at Excel. Employers like candidates that show a willingness to learn and an ability to take initiative. Clean up your Internet profile. That photo of you and Barbie chugging rum and eggnog while swinging from the star above the Nativity; it isn’t what employers want to see. Make a LinkedIn profile that is professional and current. And finally, network - talk to the Keebler Elves and the Workshop Elves. Find out if they have any opportunities. Put yourself out there. Ask to meet with Santa to discuss the industry from his perspective. Offer to buy him a glass of milk and some cookies. Santa might have some volunteer opportunities you can take on. Listen, even cleaning the reindeers’ stalls provides you with an opportunity to learn new skills and gives you something to do with your time. Be careful you don’t fall in a depressive rut. Sitting at home in your underwear, eating sugar cookies and watching Charlie Brown’s Christmas over and over isn’t good for your mental health. Come visit the team at McBride. We would be happy to help you come up with a plan to get you through until the next Holiday Season. After all there are only 358 days left until Christmas.
What is an elf to do? They have a very small, but focused skill set – inspiring children to behave while testing the bonds of marriage. Starting with the first day on the job, they willingly place themselves in situations the rest of us just aren’t willing to do. They are the Mike Rowe, of Dirty Jobs fame, of the Christmas Season. Hang from the ceiling fan… no problem. Pretend to poop on shortbread cookies… got that covered. Take a bath with Barbie, willingly. Go for a ride on the family Chihuahua, you bet. It takes dedication and hard work to come up with a new marketing ploy each and every day leading up to the Big Day. Elves on the Shelves do all this and more. They have become so very good at their jobs that there are Blogs and Pinterest pages dedicated to the work they do. I can’t look at Facebook in December, without being bombarded with photos and stories of the work they do. Yet, without fail, Christmas after Christmas, these industrious workers, in their bright red suits, end up unemployed. And it’s hard for them. Their resumes are very industry specific. Few employers are willing to take on someone so short of basic essential skills. And while they excel at hosting marshmallow fights with childhood toys, they suck at Microsoft Excel. Their ability to communicate seems to be limited to notes written in crayon, and just try to have a team meeting with them. It is sure

When I meet my constituents, I get a lot of questions about government finances. Well, I thought, why not ask the expert, Derek Fildebrandt, MLA for Strathmore – Brooks, former Canadian Taxpayers Federation Alberta Director, and the Wildrose Shadow Finance Minister? And what better place than the pages of the Newsy Neighbour, which informs and serves both our constituencies! Here’s the top 5 questions I get and Derek’s answers.

Leela
With interest rates so low, what is wrong with going into debt?
Derek
PROMOTIONAL/EMBROIDERY SCREEN PRINTING
Governments going into debt for brief periods of time during emergencies is a reasonable policy, but permanently funding government programs through debt financing is not. It puts the long-term sustainability of programs Albertans rely on at risk by putting more and more money towards bank debt instead of helping Albertans. Already, our debt servicing costs are approaching $1.3 billion. With credit agencies watching closely, we can expect our interest rates to rise and credit downgrades to come without immediate course correction. While we might enjoy the short term benefit of borrowing money, in the medium and long term we will see our program spending crowded out as debt serving costs rise along with interest rates. You may enjoy the party but you sure won’t enjoy the hangover that follows!

Why is using borrowed money for day to day operations a bad thing?
Derek Borrowing for the government’s day-to-day operations is like a family already not able to afford its mortgage payments using a line of credit to pay for groceries. It means that the government’s basic costs are not sustainable, and will eventually lead to more difficult decisions down the road.
INTERVIEW
Leela
Does Wildrose want to take away public sector pensions as the government is fond of saying?
Provincial Finances and You: Leela Sharon Aheer, MLA interviews Derek Fildebrandt, MLA
Derek We don’t. It’s baseless fear mongering from the government. What we do need to do is find creative solutions to reduce our multi-billion dollar unfunded liabilities for public sector pensions in a way that is fair to both the pensioners and taxpayers.
Leela The government also claims you want to slash front line workers, is this true?
Derek No. More government fear mongering. Without any plan to

control spending, they have little to defend themselves with other than making things up. A Wildrose Government would reduce the cost of government – including how much we spend on the overall payroll – but this will be met through thinning of middle management through attrition and getting a more disciplined grasp on public sector contracts.

We would be proud Albertans, advocate for our industries, strive towards balanced budgets, and keep taxes as low as possible. It is these values that will help shape our platform going into the next election and Albertans will hear more about. Our plan is fair, honest, and realistic. Any budget plan going forward must be based on getting a handle on spending and ensuring our economy can remain competitive on the national stage while taking care of those who need help. That is the foundation for a prosperous Alberta.

One of the Weirdest Cities in the World Kowloon Walled City still holds the record as one of the most densely populated places on Earth Though Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong was demolished in 1994, it is still believed to have contained the highest population density of humans anywhere on the planet. At only 6.5 acres, anywhere from 33,000 to 50,000 people lived within its walls. Founded as a Chinese military fort during the mid-1600s, the fort was ceded to the British in 1898. After WWII, China announced its intent to reclaim the Walled City and refugees poured in. By 1947, there were 2000 squatters. The British failed in their attempts to remove them and generally left the Walled City alone. By the 1950s, with both the Chinese and the British adopting a “hands-off” policy toward Kowloon, it became a haven for crime and drugs and by the end of the decade was virtually ruled by the organized crime syndicate known as Triads. It wasn’t until the early ‘80s that crime in Kowloon was under control. Kowloon saw a rise in construction in the 1960s and ‘70s. Residents were free to build their dwellings as they wished, ignoring safety codes. People lived as they would anywhere else, despite the overcrowding and squalor.

Deep within the buildings, a variety of small businesses even flourished. Despite lower crime rates, British and Chinese officials found the living conditions intolerable and plans were made to demolish the buildings. Many residents protested, but the government spent $2.7 billion (Hong Kong dollars) in compensation and evacuations started in 1991. They were completed in 1992. Construction work on Kowloon Walled City Park started the following month. It was completed in 1995.

The Best in Business nominations have now closed and we are very excited to be nominated. We would love your vote in the Real Estate sector. Please vote at www.readerschoicebestinbusiness. com. Now down to business, Strathmore experienced a slower market in 2015. The start of 2015 was slower than 2014 (record year), but by March it picked up slightly and carried that momentum until August. Then September sales dropped off and slightly only to recover in October, however November sales showed a further slow down to the lowest level of 2015. December, as of the 17th, is similar to 2014, so we’ll have to see how it pans out. 56 •
thenewsyneighbour.com
2015 in Strathmore was more balanced than 2012 and 2013 but did not experience the record number of sales that were seen in 2014. Strathmore sales are down roughly 28% from 2014, but, remember, 2014 was a record year so Strathmore actually faired pretty good considering the poor economy, job losses and drop in oil prices. Strathmore is a community of citizens that truly love and care about living here. There are many reasons we think Strathmore faired ok in 2015 and will continue to in 2016 despite the poor economy and low oil prices. In Strathmore, you have access to full amenities with many job opportunities, top notch schools in the public and private sectors with tons of volunteer opportunity. The abundance of activities and organizations that are always welcoming new members is amazing. There are deep caring roots in Strathmore citizens. It’s a great place to raise your family and a great place to retire. Calgary is a short drive away for a change of scenery from time to time, but the big city does not influence Strathmore. The commercial sector did fantastic producing a brand new Co-Op Grocery, Gas Bar, Liquor Store, and a Peavey Mart. Plus the June downtown festival brought awareness and the majority of vacant spaces downtown and around town were filled with all kinds of unique businesses. The 2016 Real Estate Market will likely be similar to 2015. With brand new housing and subdivisions, along with The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Making Candied Fruit
Instructions
Candying fruit is an old tradition. It can seem like a daunting task, but the process is surprisingly easy. Candied fruit is made by boiling fresh fruit in a mixture of sugar and water. This replaces the water in the fruit with sugar, and works to preserve the fruit. In the past, candying could take over a month but a shorter process is used today. Follow the steps below to make your own batch of candied fruit. Uses for Candied Fruit Chopped candied fruit can be added into cake batter, and whole slices can be used as a beautiful garnish. The fruit is traditionally used in holiday deserts such as fruitcake, fruit bread, and plum pudding. A jar of candied fruit can also be given as an impressive, inexpensive gift.
58 •
Choose your Fruit Most fruit can be candied, so choose your favorite. Try cherries, cranberries, pineapples, mangoes, or apricots. Use fresh, ripe fruit and make sure it is not blemished.
thenewsyneighbour.com
1. Prepare the fruit. Remove any seeds or pits. Slice larger fruit into 1/4 inch slices or half smaller fruit such as plums. Very small fruit such as berries and cherries can be used whole. If you are candying the peel of citrus fruit, first scrape off the bitter white end. 2. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil. Use 1 part sugar to 3 parts water. Sugar easily boils over, so watch the mixture closely and use a saucepan with plenty of extra room. 3. Place the fruit in the boiling mixture and lower the heat. Make sure the fruit is submerged and turn it occasionally. Let it cook for 40 to 50 minutes or until the fruit is translucent. 4. Remove the fruit from the water and let it dry overnight. This is best done on a wire rack to let excess water drip out. 5. The fruit is ready when it is dry but still tacky. Roll it in sugar. 6. Store your candied fruit in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The fruit will keep for up to six months. Next time you head to the market, pick out some fresh, seasonal fruit and candy it with these simple steps.

We also debated and the government rammed through: Bill 1 – An Act to Renew Democracy in Alberta – Banned corporate and union donations with lots of loopholes for the government’s friends. Bill 2 – An Act to Restore Fairness to Public Revenue. Note the cute name. This Bill raised corporate and personal income taxes just as the economic tailspin accelerated. Bill 3 – Interim Supply Act, Bill 4 (Budget), Bill 9 Appropriations. Borrowed tons of money with no oversight, belatedly passed a budget after their federal friends lost, borrowed some more. Nobody believes their fantasy revenue numbers. Not even them, I would wager. Yes, that’s their hand in your pocket. Bill 5 – The so-called “Sunshine List”.
BEST
Other bills: Bill 7 – The Alberta Human Rights Amendment Act. Bill 8 – The Public Education Collective Bargaining Act, takes all authority to bargain on money issues away from local school boards. Passed with some amendments. Local school boards remain concerned. After all, they get to pay for it.

And then there is Bill 6... Rammed through, this ill-conceived and poorly written legislation forces our farming friends into an oppressive and broken WCB system.

They are doing so many things that are going to hurt our way of life and have it cost more just to try to live here in Alberta.” It has been a privilege serving you since May 5th. In spite of our trying circumstances, we have much to be thankful for, not the least the generosity of our fellow Albertans. Please give to those who are in need, whether that is through your local food bank, volunteering, or donations for causes you believe in. We are proud Albertans, and we are resilient. We have so much to be proud of, and so much to fight for. I have never been so proud to be Albertan. Stay strong, and keep optimism in your heart in the New Year.

A bathroom addition offers a return of 80% to 130%, while a bathroom remodel can recoup anywhere from 65% to 120% of your investment. Get more out of your living spaces: With more than 40% of Canadians aged 20 to 29-years old living with their parents, it’s no surprise that homeowners are looking to maximize the purpose of each room in their homes. Here’s how to make the most of your spaces:
Getting the most of Your Home Renovation Fifty-one per cent of Canadians plan to renovate their homes this year. It’s a great time to make improvements, whether you’re remodeling to maintain your home or to increase its value before you put it on the market.

New Look New Year
Emily Hogan is an interior designer from new and local design company Blyss Interiors. Her strong experience in the window covering industry has inspired her to offer those services to Strathmore and area as well as her savvy & stylish design style. Once the Christmas decorations are away and we have rung in the New Year, it is a good time to refresh our space to give us a new feel for the New Year. There are many budget conscious yet high impact ways to do just this and bring new life to any room. First and foremost, the most dramatic application to change up any room is paint, like a bold feature wall to create a focal point or refreshing all walls in a new hue that will immediately give a fresh new take on the space and be the building block for new items and complimentary colours that can be introduced. The kitchen is the heart of the home and often the most expensive space to update. In order to do this on a budget, there are many areas of this space that you could focus on that can add an instant update. Switching out cabinet hardware is an easy and inexpensive way to add character to your kitchen. For a more permanent update, replacing your backsplash with a new tile that modernizes and adds visual interest is key. There are many well priced tiles that can instantly and easily heighten the overall appeal of your kitchen. Furniture layout – You do not have to go and purchase all new furniture to update a space. A couple new accent pieces mixed in with the old will give an eclectic space unique to you and your family. Wander through your home and see what could be illuminated firstly, what items could be used in other areas of the home and come up with a new space plan to refresh any space. Re-inventing existing items is also a great way to do just this; paint that old dresser you have had and use it as a hallway table for an instant conversation piece, or cover that old accent chair and position it in that awkward corner you may have to create a cozy reading nook.

Soft finishes – Adding in soft finishes such as drapes, cushions, throws, and valances instantly heightens the overall space. Soft finishes add that extra luxurious and cozy layer to any space. If you already have drapes, try switching them out for a new hue from room to room and or recover your existing pillows with a new accent colour and or bold pattern. Soft finishings really just add that final touch to a space and provide that show home appeal. New bedding also is a great way to introduce a new pattern or colour, allowing you to echo this new design scheme throughout the rest of the space. The New Year is an exciting time for change so let’s bring this into the home! Refresh your space for 2016!

Have You Done Any Planning For Your
Future? The question isn’t at what age I want to retire, it’s at what income. ~George Foreman
Realistically, how much do you need to retire and how much are you going to receive from the government when you do reach the age of 65? We Canadians are living longer and I can think of a few people I know that have not even thought about putting money away for retirement or are not saving enough. If I would have stashed $50 a month under my mattress for 30 years, I would have ended up with $18,000 but if I invested it and earned just 5 percent, I would have almost $40,000 – at 8 percent, that figure becomes $68,000. It’s never too early to start saving for retirement. Whether its $25 a month when you’re 15 and you just got your first part-time job, or $100 a month when you’re working a fulltime job, establishing a pattern and a habit of saving a portion of your income from every paycheque can be very effective over the long term. Set up an automatic payment so the money comes out once or twice a month and you will not even notice it is gone. START TODAY!! Just do it and quit putting if off! You should put it into something you cannot touch, because after it starts to grow you will be tempted to spend it on something you really don’t need; it is just too tempting. Now let’s say you did not think ahead and you have no or very little money for your retirement; what can you expect from the government to survive on? Well, we have two options: the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) is a contributory, earnings-related social

insurance program. It forms one of the two major components of Canada’s public retirement income system, the other component being Old Age Security (OAS). With Old Age Security, the amount of your Old Age Security (OAS) pension will be determined by how long you have lived in Canada after the age of 18. For the period from April 1 to June 30, 2013, the maximum OAS pension amount was $546.07. OAS benefits are adjusted quarterly (in January, April, July and October) if there are increases in the cost of living as measured by the Consumer Price Index. You may qualify for a full Old Age Security pension in one of two ways: You resided in Canada for at least 40 years after turning age 18, or you were born on or before July 1, 1952. On July 1, 1977, you resided in Canada, or on July 1, 1977, you did not reside in Canada but after turning 18, you resided in Canada for a period of time prior to July 1, 1977, or on July 1, 1977, you possessed a valid Canadian immigration visa. (Sounds like government talk to me). In addition, you

must have resided in Canada continuously for the 10 years immediately before the approval of your OAS pension. If you were absent from Canada during that 10-year period, you may still qualify for a full pension if: you resided in Canada for at least one year immediately before the approval of your OAS pension, and you had periods of prior residence in Canada that were equal to at least three times the period of absence during the 10-year period (i.e., three years of residence for every year of absence). The Canada Pension Plan provides you and your family with partial replacement of earnings in the case of retirement, disability or death. The CPP operates throughout Canada and almost all individuals who work in Canada contribute to the Canada Pension Plan. The CPP provides pensions and benefits when contributors retire, become disabled, or die. You can apply for and receive a full CPP retirement pension at age 65 or receive it as early as age 60 with a reduction, or as late as age 70 with an increase. If you continue to work while receiving your CPP retirement pension, and are under age 70, you can continue to participate in the CPP. Your CPP contributions will go toward post-retirement benefits, which will increase your retirement income. If you become severely disabled to the extent that you cannot work at any job on a regular basis, you and your children may receive a monthly benefit. When you die, CPP survivor benefits may be paid to your estate, surviving spouse or common-law partner and children. Married or common-law couples in an ongoing relationship may voluntarily share their CPP retirement pensions. The CPP contributions you and your spouse or common-law partner made during the time you lived together can be equally divided after a divorce or separation.
Listen to me, this is important! This is your future! Start putting money away for your retirement; if you don’t have a lot, just give a little. Just do it! Kathryn Hartwell
Retirement has been a discovery of beauty for me. I never had the time before to notice the beauty of my grandkids, my wife, the tree outside my very own front door. And, the beauty of time itself. ~Hartman Jule

3 Essential Tips for Buying Your First Investment Property Buying an investment property is a great way to secure your financial future for the long term, but it is not a decision to take lightly. Aside from the price of the property itself, there are many other costs to factor in, and it’s easy to end up going way over budget to the extent you end up losing out. Before making any commitment, you’ll also need to study the local real estate market exhaustively. The following tips will help you get started on the right track:
1. Consider the Type of Investment
For most first-time property investors, a rental property tends to be the obvious option. However, investing in a property that you can profit from by renting it out to long-term tenants also requires a very specific set of market conditions. Most importantly, you’ll need to be sure you can get enough money from rental payments to cover any mortgage, insurance and maintenance costs while also leaving a healthy profit. More experienced investors might look into buying a property for short-term holiday lets. While there is always a degree of uncertainty when it comes to relying on holiday lets as a consistent income, you will always be able to ask for a lot more than you can with a long-term tenancy. Yet another option to consider is buying a dilapidated property
#106, 304 Third Avenue Strathmore, AB
for renovation and resale. Such a project can net you an enormous profit, but it’s not something you want to risk getting into unless you know exactly what you’re doing. If you can organize your own team of tradesmen and carry out a lot of the work yourself, your profits will be much greater.
2. Find the Right Location
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that location is one of the most It shouldn’t come as any surprise that location is one of the most important factors when buying any property, but this is doubly true in the case of investments. You’ll need to find a neighbourhood with a high appeal if you want to have any hope of getting a good resale or rental price. In the case of rental properties, it’s much safer to buy something in a good area where the likelihood of getting bad tenants who disturb the neighbours and default on their payments is less likely. When you’re investing in a property to renovate and resale, you’ll need to be able to see the potential in otherwise unattractive and derelict buildings. The best opportunities often come in the form of the worst-looking house on the street but, after plenty of work, it will look new and inviting to potential buyers. Before parting with any money or even making any offers, be sure to thoroughly examine the area first. If possible, get to know some of the people living in the region, and spend some time there to truly get to know it. Finally, consider buying in a growth area that is under redevelopment and increasing demand.

It’s important to remember that there are many more costs involved when buying an investment property than the actual money you put down initially. REAL ESTATE Back Cover Back Cover
When buying an investment property, particularly one that you plan to rent out, you’ll need to have plenty of additional savings available to pay for unforeseen problems. The last thing you want is to have a tenant calling you because of a major issue that you cannot afford to fix. As such, you should always have enough money saved up to pay for any unforeseen consequences without having to apply for emergency funding.
Final Words
Investing in real estate can be extremely profitable, but taking the wrong steps can lead to financial meltdown. You’ll need to have plenty of funding available as well as a contingency plan in case of things going wrong. As such, it’s always a good idea for first-time property investors to start small by buying a low-value but liveable home that needs only a small amount of work and money spending on it to get a good rental return. Only once you feel comfortable with the marketplace and you have built up a large amount of capital should you consider expanding your property portfolio. Charles Owen-Jackson
