From the Publishers It feels so strange to be saying, “2013” and, “We made it!” Not that I thought the world was going to come to an end on December 21st like all the fanatics out there thought, it’s just that 2012 was such an amazing year that I hate to say good-bye. With 2013 comes the celebration of our 5th year and we have kept growing, keeping in pace with the communities that enjoy and share in our accomplishments. We are proud to support the towns, groups, readers and the businesses within our ever-expanding distribution area. As thanks to all who have supported us, we now offer a “Loyalty Reward Points Program” and we have started a new “Your Community Programs website” to help all non-profit organizations in Rockyview and Wheatland areas, the same groups we supported in 2012 with over $20,000 in free advertising! In fact, we now have over 19,000 online subscribers and we mail our magazine out to readers all over this great country of Canada. See, 2012 was a phenomenal year for us! We absolutely could not have aspired to this kind of growth without the support of our advertisers who know the importance of staying in touch with their communities. Our first Issue for 2013 is dedicated TO all of you, FOR all of you – the “New You” Issue. In fact besides our usual fun, interesting and funny stories throughout the magazine, we dedicated a whole section from pages 14 thru 25 JUST FOR YOU!! There is a little bit of something for everyone including yoga,

New Year Resolutions? Email less. Cancel at least a few of the 9 or 10 e-mail accounts I currently have. Not talk on my cell phone while in the bathroom, doing... Try driving at or under the speed limit... at least when I’m not hungry, tired or late. Watch more television - it is the “window into the world”, right? Stop procrastinating... maybe. Enjoy the sweeter side of life - M&Ms, Hershey kisses, candy corns, and cheesecake

Be more decisive ... I’ll absolutely try to attempt to think about resolving to be more decisive, if I possibly can. I will avoid taking a bath whenever possible and conserve more water. I will give up chocolates totally. 100%. Completely. Honestly… I will stop sending e-mail, SMS, Instant Messages and be on the phone at the same time with the same person. I will spend less than one hour a day on the Internet. This, of course, will be hard to estimate since I’m not a clock watcher. I will not tell the same story at every get together.

YOGA I’m sure you all have been through the exercise cycle. You know, first it’s the treadmill, then aerobics, palates, the gym you join and go to for about a month, the walking, jogging, and weight lifting, but you can never truly commit to stay on track. Finally, I have found the right exercise program for me. I have been practicing yoga for over a year now and I love it. I work at my own pace and it makes me feel great. You can do Yoga with Anndees Fitness for Women in Chestermere and Pravana yoga has just opened their doors in Strathmore. You may say yoga is not for me, but yoga is just not yoga; there are lots of different kinds for lots of different people. Many people think that yoga is just stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. All studios offer a Beginner Basics, which is recommended for those brand new to yoga. You will learn about the philosophy and benefits of yoga, and practice basic breathing techniques and postures. HATHA - Hatha is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. If a class is described as Hatha style, it is probably going to be slow-paced and gentle and provide a good introduction to the basic yoga poses. VINYASA - Like Hatha, Vinyasa is a general term that is used to describe many different types of classes. Vinyasa, which means Page 14

The Newsy Neighbour

breathe-synchronized movement, tends to be a more vigorous style based on the performance of a series of poses called Sun Salutations, in which movement is matched to the breath. A Vinyasa class will typically start with a number of Sun Salutations to warm up the body for more intense stretching that’s done at the end of class. Vinyasa is also called Flow, in reference to the continuous movement from one posture the next. ASHTANGA - Ashtanga, which means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit, is a fast-paced, intense style of yoga. A set series of poses is performed, always in the same order. This practice is very physically demanding because of the constant movement from one pose to the next and the emphasis on daily practice. Ashtanga is also the inspiration for what is often called Power Yoga, which is based on the flowing style of Ashtanga with out keeping strictly to the set series. BIKRAM/HOT YOGA - Pioneered by Bikram Choudhury, this style is more generally referred to as Hot Yoga. It is practiced in a 95 to 100 degree room, which allows for a loosening of tight muscles and profuse sweating, which is thought to be cleansing. The Bikram method is a set series of 26 poses, but not all hot classes make use of this series. RESTORATIVE - Restorative yoga makes use of props to support the body as it relaxes into poses over the course of several minutes. The idea is to stay in each pose long enough to encourage passive stretching. Seated forward bends, gentle supine back-bends, and twists are examples of the type of poses that can be adapted to be restorative with the addition of props like blankets and bolsters. Often the challenge comes in learning to be still and let go. YIN - This style of yoga targets the deeper tissues of the body - bones, joints, connective tissues, and fascia. Postures are practiced mostly upon the floor and are held for longer periods of time than other styles. For those yogis that wonder why sitting in meditation is still difficult even though you practice other forms of yoga (often very muscularly based), this class helps to balance the opposing forces within the body. RAJA - Raja yoga meditation is generally based on directing one’s life force to bring the mind and emotions so into balance that the attention may be easily focused on the object of meditation. It is focused on movement as a form of meditation and linking body, breath, and mind; a flowing series of postures that are

healthier in body, mind and spirit. Yoga lets you tune in, chill out, and shape up -- all at the same time.

CHAIR YOGA - Chair yoga is a general term for practices that modify yoga poses so that they can be done while seated in a chair. These modifications make yoga accessible to people who cannot stand or lack the mobility to move easily from standing to seated to supine positions. Many of the basic body mechanics of the individual postures are retained, no matter the stance of the practitioner. While seated on chairs, students can do versions of twists, hip stretches, forward bends, and mild backbends. In addition to a good stretch, chair yoga participants can also enjoy other health benefits of yoga, including improved muscle tone, better breathing habits, reduction of stress, better sleep and a sense of well-being. It is great for seniors.

For starters, yoga is good for what ails you. Specifically, research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases. What’s more, yoga: Improves muscle tone, flexibility, strength and stamina, Reduces stress and tension, Boosts self esteem Improves concentration and creativity, Lowers fat, Improves circulation, Stimulates the immune system, Creates sense of well-being and calm

There are many other styles of Yoga developed by various Yoga studios. Check out the closest studio near you to find out which styles they offer, either way there is a style suited for just about everyone. WHY DO YOGA? The short answer is that yoga makes you feel better. Practicing the postures, breathing exercises and meditation makes you www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Some people find that the physical practice of yoga becomes a gateway into a spiritual exploration, while others just enjoy a wonderful low-impact workout that makes them feel great. Whatever your tendency, you will be able to find a yoga class that suits your style. Pranava Yoga in Strathmore offers most of these classes. Rome wasn’ t built in a day So it’s a New Year; what are your New Year’s resolutions? Most people decide on making huge changes to their lifestyle. January 1st is the day when these huge changes take place and everyone expects that it will be somewhat easy. Deciding to change your life or life style is probably one of the best decisions you will ever make. Sticking with the changes or goals that you set for yourself can be extremely hard. Most people have already fallen off the “change” wagon before Ground Hog Day.

Swimming tones your arms and shoulders, slims your waistline, strengthens your back and firms your buttocks. Swimming gives you a top to bottom workout! Make sure to keep well hydrated while swimming. You still sweat when you swim. Tips: ~ A swim cap will protect your hair from the chlorine in the water. ~ Showering with your bathing suit on will remove the chlorine from it and make it last longer.

Start small! Your goal may be huge, and that’s ok. The steps needed to achieve that goal need to be small. You must learn to crawl before you walk, right? Change one thing at a time, and make sure that those changes are realistic. Setting small daily goals can make your big resolution seem less overwhelming and more enjoyable in the long run. When we first set a goal, there is a lot of excitement and motivation, but as time passes its appeal wears off.

Located in

Be patient! Rome wasn’t built in a day. The same can be said about the bikini body that you have seen in Oxygen Magazine, or quitting smoking. Changing behaviours or patterns that you have been doing every day for (most likely) years will not be undone in a week, or even a month. It is unrealistic to expect that much change of yourself in such little time, and expect that those changes will stick. Everyone knows someone who lost a bunch of weight really fast and gained it all back just as quickly. Your goals need a realistic time frame in order to be successful.

ANNDEE’S FITNESS FOR WOMEN

So be nice to yourself when you are deciding on this year’s Resolution. If a change is needed, do it! You won’t regret it; but remember to set small achievable goals, and give yourself a realistic time frame.

So how do you stick to your New Year’s resolution?

Tai Chi for the Family Learning the Chinese martial discipline of tai chi is a lifelong study, but you can put a few of its basic steps into practice within 5 minutes. This is a lowimpact exercise suitable for every age group, so you can include the kids too. The goal of tai chi is relaxed yet controlled port achieved through mindful, fluid movements. Tai Chi teaches that by not expending your entire physical capacity you can free your body, mind and spirit to tap into your inner source of life energy – your chi. Here is a basic Tai Chi exercise: 1) Stand with your feet about 2 feet apart, facing forward but not stiffly. Imagine your head is being gently pulled upward from your body. 2) Tuck your chin slightly, and gaze forward with a soft gaze. 3) Relax your shoulders and let your arms hang loosely, with fingers apart in a slight, natural curl. Your palms should be facing towards your body. 4) Keep your knees relaxed, slightly bent, and your rear end tucked in. 5) Bring your hands together with middle fingertips touching at a level about 2 inches below your navel. Your palms should now be facing upwards as if you are making an offering. 6) Raise your hands in a slow, controlled movement to chest level, with fingertips still touching and palms in offering. Breathe in and raise your body as you raise your hands. 7) Breathe out, and lower your body as you return your hand to below your navel again, turning your palms to face the ground. 8) Repeat 6-8 times. New Year - New You!

Personal Growth Journey

For the “New YOU” these tips will help you to become the “New You” for 2013. Remember, change is not always easy! Start with baby steps and you will be running in no time. Good luck with your personal growth journey!!

Read a book everyday. Books are concentrated sources of wis-

dom. The more books you read, the more wisdom you expose yourself to.

Learn a new language. Pick up a new hobby. Take up a new course. Is there any new course you can join? Courses are a great way to gain new knowledge and skills.

Create an inspirational room. Your environment sets the mood

and tone for you. If you are living in an inspirational environment, you are going to be inspired every day. Overcome your fears. All of us have fears. Fear of uncertainty, fear of public speaking, fear of risk… All our fears keep us in the same position and prevent us from growing. Level up your skills. If you have played video games before especially RPGs, you’ll know the concept of leveling up – gaining experience so you can be better and stronger. Wake up early. Waking up early (say, 5-6am) has been acknowledged by many (Anthony Robbins, Robin Sharma, among other self-help gurus) to improve your productivity and your quality of life. Have a weekly exercise routine. A better ‘you’ starts with being in better physical shape. Start your life handbook. A life handbook is an awesome idea. Basically, it’s a book, which contains the essentials on how you can live your life to the fullest, such as your purpose, your values and goals. Sort of like your manual for your life. Write a letter to your future self. What do you see yourself as 5 years from now? Will you be the same? Different? What kind of person will you be? Write a letter to your future self – 1 year from now will be a good start – and seal it. Make a date in your calendar to open it 1 year from now. Then start working to become the person you want to open that letter. Get out of your comfort zone. Real growth comes with hard work and sweat. Being too comfortable doesn’t help us grow – it makes Page 18

The Newsy Neighbour

us stagnate. What is your comfort zone? Do you stay in most of the time? Do you keep to your own space when out with other people? Shake your routine up. Do something different. By exposing yourself to a new context, you’re literally growing as you learn to act in new circumstances. Put someone up to a challenge. Competition is one of the best ways to grow. Set a challenge (weight loss, exercise, financial challenge, etc) and compete with an interested friend to see who achieves the target first. Acknowledge your flaws. Everyone has flaws. What’s most important is to understand them, acknowledge them, and address them. What do you think are your flaws? Get into action. The best way to learn and improve is to take action. What is something you have been meaning to do? How can you take action on it immediately? Waiting doesn’t get anything done. Taking action gives you immediate results to learn from. Learn from people who inspire you. Think about people you admire. People who inspire you. These people reflect certain qualities you want to have for yourself too. What are the qualities in them you want to have for yourself? How can you acquire these qualities? Quit a bad habit. Are there any bad habits you can lose? Oversleeping? Not exercising? Being late? Slouching? Nail biting? Smoking? Cultivate a new habit. Some good new habits to cultivate include reading books, waking up early, exercising, reading a new personal development article a day and meditating. Is there any other new habit you can cultivate to improve yourself?

Avoid negative people. Start a journal. Journaling is a great way to gain better self-aware-

ness. It’s a self-reflection process. As you write, clarify your thought process and read what you wrote from a third person’s perspective, you gain more insights about yourself. Learn chess (or any strategy game). Chess is a terrific game to learn strategy and hone your brainpower. Not only do you have fun, you also get to exercise your analytical skills.

Stop watching TV. Start a 30-day challenge. Set a goal and give yourself 30 days to

achieve this. Your goal can be to stick with a new habit or something you’ve always wanted to do but have not. 30 days is just enough time to strategize, plan, get into action, review and nail the goal. Meditate. Meditation helps to calm you and be more conscious. Let go of the past. Is there any grievance or unhappiness from the past, which you have been holding on? If so, it’s time to let it go. Holding on to them prevents you from moving on and becoming a better person. Break away from the past, forgive yourself, and move on. Show kindness to people around you. You can never be too kind to someone. In fact, most of us don’t show enough kindness to people around us. Being kind helps us to cultivate other qualities such as compassion, patience, and love. Take a break. Have you been working too hard? Self-improvement is also about recognizing our need to take a break to walk the longer mile ahead. You can’t be driving a car if it has no gas. Take some time off for yourself every week. Relax, rejuvenate and charge yourself up for what’s up ahead.

Read at least 1 personal development article a day. Commit to your personal growth.

New Year - New You! The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams, and re-establish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body’s internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy through the meridians.

Body Parts

Acupuncture

Modern Scientific Explanation - Needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.

Does acupuncture really work? I have always been interested in acupuncture and CAM (complementary and alternative medicine). It seems more and more we are hearing about herbal remedies and acupuncture as techniques that are being used alongside conventional Western medicine for all sorts of aliments. The World Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of problems, including: muscular and neurological disorders, such as headaches, facial tics, neck pain, rib neuritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, various forms of tendonitis, low back pain, sciatica, and osteoarthritis; digestive disorders, such as gastritis, hyper-acidity, spastic colon, constipation, and diarrhea; and respiratory disorders, such as sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, and recurrent chest infections; and also urinary, menstrual, and reproductive problems. Acupuncture is among the oldest healing practices in the world. According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, which included questions on the use of various CAM therapies, an estimated 3.1 million adults had used acupuncture in the previous year. In addition, according to this same survey, approximately 17 percent of adults use natural products, including herbs, making it the most commonly used therapy.

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is an alternative medicine methodology originating in ancient China that treats patients by manipulating thin, solid needles that have been inserted into acupuncture points in the skin. According to Traditional Chinese medicine, stimulating these points can correct imbalances in the flow of “Qi” through channels known as meridians. Classical Chinese Explanation - Channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up the flow in one part of the body and restricts it in others. Page 20

The Newsy Neighbour

Yes. In the past 2,000 years, more people have been successfully treated with acupuncture than with all other health modalities combined. Today acupuncture is practiced widely in Asia, the Soviet Union, and in Europe. It is now being used more and more in North America. Acupuncture treatments can be given at the same time other techniques are being used, such as conventional Western medicine, physiotherapy hands-on treatment techniques and herbal medicine. It is important that your acupuncturist know everything that you are doing, so he or she can help you get the most benefit from all your treatments.

Do I have to believe in acupuncture for it to work?

No. Acupuncture is used successfully on cats, dogs, horses and other animals. These animal patients do not understand or believe in the process that helps them get better. A positive attitude toward wellness may reinforce the effects of the treatment received, just as a negative attitude may hinder the effects of acupuncture or any other treatment. A neutral attitude (“I don’t know if I really believe in this.”) will not block the treatment results.

New Year - New You! Can Acupunture help for addictions?

In Western medical terms, the positive effect of acupuncture for treating addiction can be attributed to the fact that research has shown acupuncture to raise endorphin levels in the nervous system. Endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers and are similar in structure and function to drugs and addictions, which also have a strong analgesic effect. Research suggests that combating the strong withdrawal symptoms for people suffering from addictions is to raise endorphin levels in the nervous system. The desire to eat is also mediated by endorphin levels, which would also explain why acupuncture has a beneficial effect on people trying to lose weight by helping to control their appetites. Chinese medicine has its own way of explaining why it is so effective in treating addictions. Chinese medicine is a holistic system where every part of the body works synergistically. It is a unified system. The concept of yin and yang is at the core of Chinese medical theory. Yin and yang are two opposing forces and when a person is in good health, yin and yang are seen to be in relative balance. Yang is the “fire” aspect and yin is the “water.” Yin is substance, yang is function. Yang consumes and yin nourishes. Addicts are very often deficient in yin. Physiologically, an excess of yang causes hyperactivity, restlessness, and an excess of frenetic energy - behaviours that push an addict to constantly seek out their addiction. Psychologically, excess yang causes anxiety, agitation, and anger. All in all my thinking is if the Chinese have been using acupuncture for thousands of years it should be safe and a natural way to increase your well-being. The FDA acknowledges Chinese medicine to belong to the “whole medical system” as an individual scientific system similar to conventional medicine. I’m thinking don’t knock it until you try it! Cereal

There is so much more you can do with cereal than just eat it out of a bowl. Making tasty and healthy treats with cereal is really quick and easy! These days, quick and easy are the type of recipes I’m looking for! I have included some healthy, some notso-healthy and one of my all-time favourite “Chocolate Puffed Wheat Squares”. Now you can start off your “NEW YOU” year by making your own homemade healthy granola bars – no chemicals and no preservatives, that’s the way to go; we don’t need all that unhealthy stuff in our bodies. Happy 2013! Let’s be healthier together this year. Healthy Granola Bar Granola Bar Candy is an easy microwave candy recipe that tastes like a granola bar. Wholesome oats combine with sweet brown sugar, honey, nuts, and dried fruit to produce a delicious chewy treat that is healthier than typical candies. Try substituting other fruits, like dried apricots, raisins, and cherries, for the cranberries in this recipe. 1/2 stick (2 ounces) butter 1/4 cup plus 2 tbps dark brown sugar, packed 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 cup chopped toasted nuts, like walnuts or pecans 1/4 cup dried cranberries 3/4 cup instant (quick-cooking) oatmeal 1/4 cup wheat germ 1/6 cup honey or corn syrup Prepare an 8x8 pan by lining it with aluminum foil and spraying the foil with nonstick cooking spray. Place the butter and the brown sugar in a large microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 1 minute, or until melted. Stir until thoroughly combined. Add the remaining ingredients to the melted butter/sugar mixture and stir until thoroughly coated and mixed. Microwave for two minutes, and then stir well. Microwave for an additional two minutes. If the mixture is fragrant and bubbling by this point, remove it from the microwave. If it is not bubbling, continue to microwave in one-minute increments until it bubbles. Scrape the candy into the prepared pan and smooth it into an even layer. While still warm, score into small squares with a sharp knife. Allow to cool completely at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Once cool, remove it from the pan using the foil as handles. Cut it into squares using the scored lines as guidelines, and serve at room temperature.

Prepare two baking sheets by lining them with aluminum foil. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine the finely sliced almonds and the corn syrup. Stir to coat the almonds with the syrup, then add the powdered sugar and stir until the mixture is well-mixed. Spread the almonds in a thin layer on one of the baking sheet, and bake them for 5-6 minutes, or until golden and fragrant. Allow the almonds to cool for a few minutes, until crisp. While they are still slightly warm, loosen them from the baking sheet and allow them to cool completely. While the almonds are cooling, place the chocolate chips in a large microwave-safe bowl and microwave them for one minute. Stir until the chocolate is smooth and homogenous. Chop the almonds into small pieces. Add the almond pieces to the chocolate, reserving ¼ cup of the almonds to use as decoration, if desired. Add the crisped rice cereal, and stir until the mixture is well-combined. Using a small cookie scoop or teaspoon, drop small spoonful’s of candy onto the second prepared baking sheet. If you reserved some chopped almonds, sprinkle them on top of the clusters while the chocolate is still wet. Place the candy in the refrigerator to set the chocolate for about 30 minutes. Crispy Almond Clusters can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Caramel Chex Mix This recipe for Caramel Chex Mix features cereal, nuts, and pretzels covered with a sweet and crunchy baked caramel coating. 3.5 cups Corn or Rice Chex cereal, or similar cereal 1/2 cup nuts 1/2 cup pretzel rods 2 tbsp butter 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/4 cup light corn syrup 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk 1/2 tsp vanilla extract Pour the cereal, nuts, and pretzels into a 9x13 pan. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Place the butter, sugar, and corn syrup in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar melts, and continue to cook, stirring, until the butter is melted and the candy begins to boil. Stir in the condensed milk, and insert a candy thermometer. Continue to cook the mixture, stirring occasionally, until the candy reaches 238 degrees. Remove it from the heat, and stir in the vanilla. Pour the caramel over the cereal mixture, stirring it so that the pieces are evenly coated. Return the candy to the oven, and bake it for about 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. It is done when the caramel mixture darkens and bubbles all over the pan. Remove the candy from the oven and scrape it onto a baking sheet covered with aluminum foil. Allow it cool completely at room temperature before breaking it into pieces by hand. Store Caramel Chex mix in an airtight container or bag in a cool, dry place.

Crispy Almond Clusters Toasted glazed almonds combines with crispy cereal and decadent chocolate in these easy, delicious candies. The caramelized almonds elevate the taste of these clusters, and give them a deep, rich flavour that pairs well with semi-sweet chocolate. 1 cup sliced almonds 2 tbsp light corn syrup 1/3 cup powdered sugar 1 cup crisped rice cereal 1.5 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips Page 22

New Year - New You! 6.5 cups cornflakes cereal 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup peanut butter 1 cup light corn syrup 1 tbsp butter 1 tsp salt 1 cup chocolate chips Prepare a 9x13 pan by lining it with aluminum foil and spraying the foil with non-stick cooking spray. Place the cornflakes in a large bowl and lightly crush them with your hands for a minute, until they are small to medium-sized flakes. Place the brown sugar, peanut butter, salt, and corn syrup in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly, and heat the syrup until the sugar is melted and all of the ingredients are well-combined. Remove the pan from the heat, and immediately pour the hot syrup over the cornflakes. Stir until the cereal is well-coated. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan, and spread it evenly in the pan with a greased spoon or spatula, pressing down gently. Allow the bars to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Once they are mostly cool, microwave the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring after every minute to prevent overheating. Once the chocolate is melted, spread it over the top of the bars in a thin, even layer. Refrigerate the bars to set the chocolate, and then cut them into small squares to serve. Bars can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for a week and for several weeks in the refrigerator. Special K Bars 1 cup dark corn syrup 1 cup sugar 1 cup chunky peanut butter 6 cups Special K cereal 1 cup butterscotch chips 1 cup chocolate chips Bring syrup and sugar to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in peanut butter. Mix in Special K. Spread into buttered 9x13-inch pan. Melt butterscotch chips and chocolate chips. Stir and spread on top. Cut into bars.

The more a man knows, the more he forgives. ~ Catherine the Great A loving heart is the truest wisdom. ~ Charles Dickens When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us. ~ Helen Keller

The Newsy Neighbour

Forgiveness. It is a powerful concept. It becomes an even more challenging endeavor when it comes to forgiving ourselves. Sometimes the burden of remembering your past behaviours or decisions can result in the creation of shame and guilt. Potentially, this release of guilt, shame and even selfhatred can be achieved through personal reflection and through the deliberate act of intentionally healing your hurt and pain. It’s doubtful that it will just go away on its own over time. Instead, it might grow and fester like a wound that hasn’t healed properly. However, healing requires patience and sensitivity. It’s not a process you can rush through and expect an immediate result. Although a personal choice, this might be a process that is best supported through a trusted counselor, friend or through therapy groups or friendship circles.

Certainly there are steps you can take right away and the first is being aware of the areas that you would like to focus your energy and forgiveness on. Creating a list of areas and triggers that make you feel uncomfortable will help you become more www.thenewsyneighbour.com New Year - New You

New Year - New You!

aware of your areas of concern around forgiveness. Being open, gentle and accepting of these areas about yourself is key as well. If these areas you want to forgive yourself for have involved actions that have been harmful to yourself or others, you can take steps to address these issues in order to prevent them from recurring. You might want to acknowledge that the investment of time and effort will be worth it in the long run as you aim to have a lighter, more joyful existence. You can consider that those people around you will eventually benefit in this positive change as well. Even imagining what it would feel like to be free from guilt or anger would be a worthwhile exercise. How would you benefit in experiencing a greater sense of freeness and aliveness aside from the guilt or shame? What would you imagine yourself to look like? Feel like? Act like? As you envision this scenario, it opens your mind up to the possibility of future healing and the re-defining and restructuring of your life and purpose. You can start imagining how you might make amends through letter-writing, phone calls or journaling – all the while considering the potential impact of your current and future actions on yourself and others. January has historically been the time of renewal, planning and a time for resolutions. If we believe that people have the capacity to change, we might take time now to choose a couple of ways to lighten our spirit and to effect positive change in the lives of ourselves and those around us. Forgiveness in some capacity might be one option. All change - however bold and life-altering - begins with just one little thought. Happy New Year!

Overmedicating due to measuring errors

Kids

When administering medicine, caregivers should always use the dosing device provided by the pharmacist or manufacturer, and never attempt to “eyeball” the proper amount. That household teaspoon your mom used? According to a study in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, household spoons or similar objects can hold two to three times more liquid than standardized materials. Most pediatricians recommend using a syringe over any other dispensing device for the most accuracy.

Feature Section

Medication safety for children Important advice for caregivers Each year, an estimated 71,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for accidental medication poisonings, many of which are caused by dosing mistakes. Thankfully, while health care professionals or poison control resources resolve most issues, extreme cases that go untreated can result in complications, particularly in very young children. “Many well-intentioned caregivers can get mixed up when it comes to administering medication,” says Dr. Michael App, a pediatrician. “With so many factors playing a role in proper dosage, such as weight and age of the child, it is essential that caregivers closely follow the directions on the label to avoid potentially life-threatening mistakes.” Several manufacturers of children’s medications are also making efforts to improve safety and reduce the likelihood of errors. Perrigo Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of over-the-counter pharmaceutical products for retailers’ store brands, has been investing in equipment to insert “flow restrictors” in the bottles of all of their pediatric acetaminophen products. Flow restrictors reduce the size of the bottle opening and limit access to the medicine inside the bottle. Perrigo has added flow restrictors to all of its infants’ products and began converting the packaging of all of its children’s products with flow restrictors in January 2012. Perrigo is also participating in the Centers for Disease Control and Consumer Healthcare Products Association PROTECT initiative, which is bringing together experts to create strategies to reduce unsupervised medication ingestion in children.

Basing the dose on age instead of weight

“Children grow at different rates, which makes it hard for parents and doctors to base dosage recommendations on age,” says App. “Since children metabolize medicine differently depending on how much they weigh, this is how most manufacturers label their dosage recommendations - not based on age. This is especially important for children who are over- or underweight.”

Forgetting vitamins

As with adults, doctors need to know every medication or vitamin that a child is taking, as certain vitamins can decrease the effectiveness of medicines or cause complications. Caregivers should always have a list of medicines on hand that lists the types and dosage amounts

Experts remind caregivers to be diligent and avoid these common medicine mistakes:

Not paying attention to potential drug interactions

Caregivers should always check medication labels and take care to avoid administering multiple drugs at the same time, unless recommended or prescribed by a pediatrician. Also, before administering medicine, caregivers should always review the enclosed packaging materials and directions. Page 26

of every medication, vitamin and supplement that a child takes, as well as a list of allergies.

Not taking medicine as directed

Most prescriptions, especially antibiotics, are meant to be used in full. Even though a child may feel better, it is important to complete the dosage, or else the illness could recur. Furthermore, this practice can ultimately contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In the same vein, caregivers should avoid giving leftover pills from a previous prescription for something they “self-diagnose” to be the same as a previous illness. It is also important to avoid giving medicine for any purpose other than that specified by the instructions.

Failing to adhere to expiration dates

New programs beginning 2013 for pre-schoolers & Adults!

Manufacturers list expiration dates on packaging for a reason, as these dates are generally based on internal testing that demonstrates the longest period a medicine is known to be effective. Using medicine left in the cabinet after it has expired can result in reduced effectiveness. “Parents should always ask their pharmacist or pediatrician if there are any special precautions or directions with any drug - over-the-counter or prescription - their child is taking,” says App.

Silly Things Do you wear your shoes on the top of your head? Do you sleep on the blanket At the bottom of your bed? And do you spread the jam under your bread? “That would be very silly,” the children all said. Do you put your clothes on inside out? Do you run all around the house and shout? Do you chew gum, then blow big bubbles That get stuck all over your mouth? That sure would be silly, without a doubt. Do you put your socks on your ears And then make funny faces? Do you go outside in the rain And run in muddy races? Now that would be especially silly, Can you imagine the look on your mommies’ faces? Do you pour in too much bubble bath When it’s time to get in the tub? You wouldn’t be able to find yourself Or see just where you had to scrub. Would you put shampoo on your nose, Or use it on your ten tiny toes? I think you’d be kind of slippery When you tried to put on your clothes! It’s fun to think of silly things That you wouldn’t ordinarily do. I could think of a hundred more; How about you? www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Here is some good stuff to read to your kids...

Pouty Puppy Written by Denise Geremia

I always know when they are leaving. Nothing can get past The Delta Ninja. When mommy showers and puts on makeup in the morning, it’s almost guaranteed not to end well for me. Either I’m left at home alone, or I’m sent away.

They treat me so badly. It all started Saturday morning. Mommy was getting ready. They fed HER before they fed me (which is a whole other story all in itself. How can they favour HER to ME?). Daddy was putting stuff in the big silver thing on wheels. They call it a “vehicle.” I call it “fun to stick my head out the window thing”. I saw them pack up my blanket and some food. Oh man… what’s happening? Are they going to leave me here forever? I sense whatever is happening is going to be exciting, and I don’t want them to forget me. So, I made sure they wouldn’t. I walked in Mommy’s feet. It’s hard to do when she’s walking down the stairs – especially while carrying her, but I managed. I stayed right in there. Mommy even tripped once and got mad at me, but hey – her yelling my name reminds her that I’m here! DON’T FORGET ME! They went into the kitchen and started making breakfast. I stayed very close. Mommy even accidentally dropped the dishwasher door on me. She got mad at me for that! Hello!! SHE dropped the door – NOT me! I was just staying close so that they don’t forget me! But man… I had to pee. I hadn’t peed since last night. But I didn’t want to go outside in case they accidentally left without me! So at first, I refused to pee. But then I got the scrap food that she dropped on the floor and then I couldn’t take it – I had to pee!! So I bolted outside as quick as I could. Normally, I search and search and search for the BEST place to pee, but this time, I just did it quickly – I peed on her swing set. Mommy hates when I do that, but hey – desperate times comes for desperate measures. Then I ran back inside so fast. I was like lightning, I was so fast! They were still there – phewf! I watched them pack their bags, and I got more and more excited. I started spinning in circles in their walk-in closet. Mommy did NOT like that because it’s so small in there, but I didn’t care. I was too excited to care! They brought the bags downstairs and I made sure to be right there when they put the bags on the ground. Daddy even put the bag on me, and then yelled at me to move out of the way. Just another way to remind them that I’m there – they’ll thank me later! I stood by the front door – they won’t forget me here! But mommy went back upstairs with her. I had better make sure they remember I’m still here, so I ran upstairs while mommy changed my enemy. Then I ran back downstairs as fast as any ninja could and stayed by the front door. All the bags were gone, but I got here in time! They can’t forget me! Then it happened. All 3 of them went outside, and closed the door behind them. I can’t believe they forgot that I was here. I did everything I could to make sure they’d remember me. What more could I have done? Maybe walk through their feet more? Maybe sit ON their lap while they ate? Page 28

Bark? I do have a ferocious bark… Then the door opened, and mommy’s smiling face welcomed me and I bolted outside as fast as I could – just in case she closed the door with me still inside. By accident, of course. I jumped in the car so fast that I’m pretty sure it almost tipped over. They’re lucky to have me here, so I don’t think they minded. Then we drove. And drove. And drove. It seemed like forever. Mommy let me hang my head out of the window even. For those few minutes, life was good. Then, I recognized the area. Could it be? Oh my goodness! I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!! I started whining and scraping my paws on mommy’s leg. She hates it when I do that, but I can’t help it! I am so excited!! The car stops. The door opens. And I see him… GRANDPA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I turn around, and mommy and daddy are gone. I didn’t even notice them leave. I don’t even care. I am so happy to be at Grammy and Grampy’s house, that I don’t care they left me.

Here is a reply to “Pouty Puppy” from one of our wonderful readers...

Hey, Bauer, listen up! You cannot be a “pouty dog” you are a Schnauzer. In fact, you look just like me, but I’m a lot older and far wiser. Now you must get with the program if you expect to be king forever. That little thing you talk about, and get all so indignant about, is part of the family, so -- join the family. My mom is a great-gramma, and we often have this tiny visitor, who is now old enough to play on the floor. I’ve learned that if I’m nice to him, he lets me have his toys. Of course, he takes some of mine too, but who cares, I’m tired of them anyway. As well, since my mom gets on the floor too, I get far more pats, and attention, sometimes even a tug of war. That makes baby laugh, and that makes my mom laugh. Everybody loves me! You cannot simply pout, run away, and be mean in bed. I mean, I sleep crosswise most of the time, and my mom just manages around me. Sometimes I can even pin her in bed by lying on top of a leg. I do stay up at the top of the bed sometimes, but only until the stroking and petting quits. Then I move, but not in disgust; I do it to be comfortable. I mean, she has to sleep sometime. So wise up and claim that little one as your own. You can you know. Your friend, Chloe

Same nights – New Year… It’s January – welcome in the New Year or just look outside? Is it -30 and blowing? This is a good chance to give the gift of letting someone else bound about in the snow and welcome in the year. You have the joy of giving and can get back into a warm comfy bed for a richly deserved sleep. We really don’t know what sleep is. We do know we need it to survive. Sleep restores us. Sleep deprivation has a similar impact on the body as ageing and may increase the severity of age-related chronic disorders such as heart disease and diabetes. Test question: In descending order, which can you live the longest without: Water, sleep, sunlight or food? As your January research project – the answer may surprise you. A major issue seems to be the quality of sleep we get. There appears to be some evidence that frequent medication-assisted sleep may not provide the proper rest and recovery our bodies need. Did you know that alcohol only appears to give you a better sleep initially? What happens is that a couple drinks before bed (other than alcohol-related health issues) actually causes a withdrawal reaction when the effects of the drinks wear off in a couple of hours. Result? You generally wake up or go to a very light - non restful sleep stage. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Very few go mountain climbing without proper preparation and equipment, even fewer do it twice. While maybe not as immediately threatening as being on the side of a cliff with too short a rope, proper preparation for sleep and a supportive sleep environment are mission critical to the sleep effort. Your mattress and pillow form critical parts of your sleep system and are worth looking at for a New Year’s checkup. A few pointers to put on the list: 1) More than 8 years old? At this age, some mattresses are almost at their lifespan. 2) Sagging or bulging in the center? That ‘lumpy’ look or feel? Frayed or sagging at the edges? 3) Do you seem to feel better after a nap on the couch before bedtime than after a nights sleep? Tired during the day? Stiff/ sore in the morning? A third of your life is spent trying to get a good night’s sleep. More important than just tired, your health can be a factor of sleep. Talk to your independent mattress retailer – they have to know their business and can help on your mattress / pillow sleep system. A little research can yield a ton of valuable information but as always: Know the real agendas and be an aware and alert consumer. THE “NEW YOU” AND YOUR FAMILY Life has changed for children over the years. I remember growing up I was never in the house – we had no computers and only watch TV on Sunday nights with the family. It was a much healthier lifestyle for children. I know it’s like pulling teeth to get you child to go “outside” and play as they don’t know what to do with themselves; they just don’t have the imagination or the willingness to just run, play, jump rope or go to the park and why would they? They can be entertained for hours on their computer – it’s becoming a problem and why obesity in Canada is a growing health concern, which is "expected to surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality. Almost a third of Canadians aged five to 17 are overweight or obese! This January theme of the “NEW YOU” means you and your family. Just one small change can lead to a cascade of changes. Start with baby steps a few little changes every week and before you know it, you will be enjoying a new and healthier lifestyle. Your children will have a healthier positive attitude just by making a few simple changes and remember, children learn by example! If you are sitting in front of the TV or computer for hours they will think it is just fine and dandy to do the same. Start now and don’t put it off; your health and your children’s health is a risk. Remember, it is only through action that you can change your life. No one can do it for you.

POSITIVE AND HEALTHY IDEAS FOR YOUR KIDS Go to bed early • Read a book Brush your teeth • Wash your face Eat an Apple • Drink a glass of milk Don’t drink Pop • Get involved in sports Take your dog for a walk Go for a bike ride • Clean your room Bake cookies with mom or dad Play a board game with family or friends Do a painting (there is a large variety of paint by number painting according to age) Go swimming • Do a puzzle Play a game of catch, hopscotch or hide and go seek Go rock picking and then paint them Be creative • Have a bath Give your mom and dad a hug

LIMITATIONS

What kind of limitations have you imposed on yourself? What are some of the excuses you make? Write them down, and then destroy one of them today by taking action. If you think you’re not good enough to do something, do it anyway. Who cares what you think if it’s holding you back?

START A BLOG

But don’t start just any blog. Start a blog on a specific topic you enjoy. If you do this, you can become the expert in that area, and make connections you didn’t think possible. Start a blog, and your life will improve. But remember, it does take hard work.

Orchids These are very interesting plants with a finicky reputation. If you know what to do they can be easy to grow. I’ll help you. Orchids do not begin to bloom until they are about five to six years old. Most orchids grow best in bright, indirect light from a south facing window. Lady’s slippers and moth orchids need less. They often thrive in an east or west window, or even under florescent lights. All orchids need a 15 – 20 degree Fahrenheit or 8 – 10 degree Celsius difference between day and night temperatures. Potting soil for orchids is a little different. It is a mixture of coarsely chopped Fir Bark or Redwood Bark, with small amounts of peat moss, perlite or vermiculite mixed in. The mixture needs to drain quickly and have room between the particles for air to reach the orchids roots. Orchids are slow growers and need consistent feeding. Their potting mixture offers almost no nutrients. They need a high–nitrogen houseplant fertilizer. The same food you would use for foliage plants, at about one-fourth the strength; once a week is good. When you see the plant is starting to develop flowers then it is time to start feeding the plant a diluted high-phosphorous fertilizer for a few weeks. Do not feed resting plants. The type of orchid will dictate the amount of watering it needs. The plants that naturally grow in tree crotches or on rocks need to dry out between waterings. The ground–dwelling species, like Lady’s Slippers, need a steady supply of moisture. Too much water will easily damage the orchids. Thoroughly water plants, allow the excess water to drain away. Orchids should be flushed monthly. Using distilled water helps. Orchids are sensitive to the salts and fluoride in the tap water. Flush plants in the summer months. Mist plants often, using distilled water. Mist lightly and often. Set plants on a tray of pebbles. This will increase humidity. Page 32

The Newsy Neighbour

Most orchids need repotting every two years. They need to be slightly root bound to be at their best for flowering. You need to repot to refresh the potting medium. The orchid potting mix loses its nutrients over time. Repot when the plant appears to be in an active growth period. There are two main types of orchids that describe their growing habits. Monopodial – upright orchids, develop stems that emerge from the crown. Flower spikes grow along the stem when the plant is mature. Sympodial, or creeping orchids is the second type. This kind develops a shallow creeping Rhizome. They flower by sending a shoot out from the tip of the Rhizome. When it comes time to repot your orchid you should thoroughly soak the roots first. This will help make them more pliable and less brittle. It will lessen the chance of breakage. Make sure you sterilize your scissors or pruning shears in boiling water before and after cutting away any black and/or mushy roots. Loosen any bits of potting mix and rinse the roots with lukewarm water to remove the last of the old potting mix. Make sure you use a clean pot. Do not throw out your broken pots; instead use some of the broken pieces in the bottom of the pot. Coarse gravel is also good to use, this will help the drainage. Fill the pot twothirds full with damp orchid potting mix. With sympodial orchids, set the plant in the pot a little off centre. You want the oldest pseudo bulb close to the edge, approximately one inch of space between the newest growing tip and the edge of the pot. Add more potting mix patting it in lightly. The rhizome should be about half an inch below the edge of the pot. If needed, stake the plant to keep it upright. Monopodial orchids are placed in the center of a clean, prepared pot. Use broken pottery and coarse gravel, fill two– thirds full with potting mix. Replant at the same depth as it was growing. With all orchids it is important to tamp down the potting mix. You want it to be firmly settled around the roots of the plant. Be careful not to over water a recently repotted plant. Let it dry for a few days. It needs to rest and let the roots seal off any damaged areas. Wait a month before starting a feeding program again. If your orchid does not start to bloom again it could be caused by too much fertilizer or the temperature is not right. It may be because the light is not right. There should be a 6 – 9 degree Celsius difference between day and night. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Top 10 winter plants 10) Camellias - If you want to give some cold weather varieties a try, Ashton’s Pride, Frost Prince, Snow Flurry, Elaine Lee or Ashton’s Snow should get you started. Depending on the specific variety, they can be hardy. 9) Japanese Maple - Start new plants in spring after the last frost. They do best in dappled light with some protection from the wind. 8) Evergreen Holly - Hardy and adaptable, there’s probably a holly that can thrive in your garden no matter where you live. Be careful if you want it to sprout berries, though. You’ll need both male and female plants for that. 7) Winter Vegetables - The following vegetables make good autumn and winter crops: Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Kohlrabi, Leaf Lettuce, Leek, Mustard, Onions, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Turnip. 6) Snowdrops - Snowdrops do best in a sheltered spots. bulbs or divide offsets in spring after the last frost. 5) Berry Bushes - f you’re not a bird-watcher yet, consider this: Flowers aren’t the only potentially colorful additions to your backyard. If you include winter plants that attract birds to your landscape, the birds themselves can be decorative, either perched on your fence, or providing some ornamental interest to your bare trees. 4) Crape Myrtle - A favorite in the South, crape myrtle has distinctive gray-brown bark that peels in patches along the branches and trunk, giving it an interesting multi-hued appearance in winter. 3) Bergenia - Plant in spring or fall. Bergenias also profit from mulching twice a year. They will tolerate quite a bit of abuse as long as they are kept moist. 2) Witch Hazel - Witch hazel likes partial shade and can be planted in spring or fall. 1) Hellebores - Hellebores do best in sheltered spots under trees and make great groundcovers for shady areas. In winter, full sun won’t hurt them, but during the summer months, make sure they get some afternoon shade or dappled light.

Men, Vehicles & Sports Remembering 2012!

What a year for Southern Alberta and the local sports scene! As we look ahead to 2013, I bring you my top 10 stories from 2012. This list truly is a reflection of the good, the bad and the ugly. 10. – Calgary Roughnecks The Roughnecks rolled through the 2012 NLL season with 12 wins clinching top spot in the Western Division and securing home field advantage through the playoffs. The team was favoured to win their 3rd league title but stumbled in a semifinal playoff loss at home to the Edmonton Rush. Rookie GM Mike Board used Head Coach Dave Pym as the scapegoat as Pym was fired and replaced by Curt Malawsky. 9. – World Cup Mania On February 13, 2013 we will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the 1988 Winter Olympics. The lasting legacy was alive and well in 2012 as Southern Alberta hosted a record number of World Cup and World Championship events. The inaugural FIS Ski Cross World Cup was held at Nakiska. A Cross Country World Cup (with a 2.2 million dollar budget) returned to the Canmore Nordic Center. The Olympic Oval hosted a Short Track World Cup for the first time in 9 years. Include the Olympic Track and Field Championships at Foothills stadium and the number of major events hosted in this area was close to 15. The economic impact was huge! 8. – Kaillie Humphries No other Calgary-trained athlete is more dominate in their sport than Humphries. The 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist in Bobsleigh did not lose in 2012. She has won 8 consecutive World Cup events and she will be the driver to beat in the 2014 Sochi Olympics. 7. – Troy Dorchester July 15, 2012 and it was a race for the centennial! It was the 100th Anniversary of the Calgary Stampede and it was a controversial ending to the Rangeland Derby as the Westerose, Alberta native needed a photo finish to beat Doug Irvine by .01 seconds. However, most of us went to bed thinking Jason Glass had won the race. The final was stained by a big penalty as Glass was called for wagon interference. 6. – Nik Lewis Through the first half of the 2012 season, Nik Lewis was the Stampeders Most Outstanding Player! Unfortunately, he makes this list for all the wrong reasons. An ill-advised O.J. Simpson tweet prior to the Western Final against the BC LiPage 34

ons had the organization in full damage control. When Lewis failed to apologize for his actions, he was forced to apologize and had to donate his playoff cheque to the women’s shelter. Lewis crossed the line and put the organization in a very difficult situation. He will be on a very short leash in 2013. 5. – 2012 World Junior Championships As we cheer on Team Canada at the 2013 Championships in Ufa, Russia who will forget the 2012 Championships hosted by Edmonton and Calgary? With an economic impact of over $42 million to the province of Alberta and a huge profit and legacy for Hockey Canada, these championships boasted a record attendance. It also marked the first time in 11 years that Canada did not reach the final as they were stunned 6 – 5 by the Russians in a memorable semi-final. Trailing 6 – 1 midway through the third period, Canada’s rally fell just short! 4. – Jim Henderson This was arguably the feel-good story of 2012. A career minor leaguer, the former Calgary Dawg and graduate of Central Memorial High School made his major league debut with the Milwaukee Brewers on July 26th at the age of 29. Henderson made his MLB debut against the Washington Nationals (he was originally drafted by Montreal in 2003) and he struck out the first batter he faced, Roger Bernadina. With Henderson in the lineup, the Brewers went on a roll and almost made the playoffs. Henderson is the first alumnus of the Dawgs organization to play in the major leagues and despite his success, he still returned home to Calgary in the off season and coaches the Dawgs youth programs. 3. – Calgary Flames Where do we start? In January, Jarome Iginla scored his 500th career goal (yes it was an ugly one) against the Minnesota Wild at the Scotiabank Saddledome. At the end of March, the Flames lost to the Canacks in overtime and were officially eliminated from the playoffs for the third consecutive year. Head Coach Brent Sutter did not have his contract renewed and the General Manager Jay Feaster was able to hire his own coach Bob Hartley. The Flames were active on the free agent market making a trade and signing defenseman Dennis Wideman. They also inked a couple of forwards in Jiri Hudler and Roman Cervenka. Of course thanks to Gary Bettman and the NHL owners, the players are locked for the third time in 18 years leaving us all to wonder if we have seen Iginla in a Flames jersey for a last time. 2. – UFC 149 Even if you are not a fan of Ultimate Fighting, you have to be amazed at what happened on July 21, 2012. For the first time ever, the UFC announced it was going to hold an event in Calgary. The card was jinxed from the start, plagued with changes. It didn’t seem to bother the fans as it was the hottest

The event did not live up to the hype. Fans were booing, chanting for a “refund!” UFC president Dana White said he was “embarrassed” yet it didn’t stop him from pocketing a huge profit thanks to a record gate. He promised Calgarians he would be back to make it up to them but the UFC has been on the decline ever since. UFC 151 was cancelled and UFC 154 did not sell out in Toronto despite the return to GSP! 1. – Calgary Stampeders What a year it was for the Calgary Stampeders! This organization made headlines on and off the field in 2012. It started in January when Henry Burris was traded to the Hamilton Tiger Cats and former all-star running back Joffrey Reynolds was released. In March, the Calgary Flames limited partnership announced they had purchased a majority share of the football team creating a powerful Calgary Flames Sports and Entertainment company. The first move by the Flames was a positive one as Head Coach and GM John Hufnagel was given a new 4 year contract extension. Starting quarterback Drew Tate was injured in the second week of the season and all appeared lost! Thanks to back up quarterback Kevin Glenn and the emergence of Canadian running back Jon Cornish, who broke Normie Kwong’s 56 year old rushing record, the www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Stamps racked up the second best record in the CFL. A quarterbacking controversy developed as Drew Tate returned for the playoffs. Despite a broken wrist, Tate threw a game winning touchdown pass to Romby Byrant to beat the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the semi-final. Kevin Glenn was thrust back into the spotlight against the BC Lions in the West final. Glenn and the underdog Stampeders responded with a huge win at BC Place Stadium and earned the right to play in 100th Grey Cup in Toronto. Despite a disappointing loss to the Toronto Argonauts in the championship game, the Stampeders can hold their heads high thanks to a very memorable 2012 season! Happy New Year everyone!

Downshifting - Shifting to a lower gear, usually so that the engine can operate in its proper rpm range, or in certain circumstances to slow the vehicle. Coolant - The water and antifreeze mix--often a glowing, toxic-avenger green--that helps remove heat from your cooling system. If you ever see any of this under your car, or smell it when you pop your hood, it can be a sign of trouble. Crankshaft Pulley - The visible wheel attached to the front end of the crankshaft. This pulley drives the alternator, as well as other devices, via the drive/fan belt. Alignment - Alignment refers to the angle your tire contact the pavement, and is usually measured in degrees positive or negative. Alignment is surprisingly important, affecting the way your tires wear, the tendency on your car to travel straight (versus pulling to one side or another), and overall steering “feel.” www.thenewsyneighbour.com

1) Understand that we don’t care about clothes. Yours or ours. All we need is one pair of work shoes and one pair of good shoes. 2) Don’t talk to us when the television is on. Very simple. Television off, we talk. Television on, we don’t talk. 3) Ditto that for the computer. 4) Don’t ask us what we’re thinking. Men can think about nothing for hours. 5) Don’t try and be subtle, just say what’s on your mind and be honest. 6) We do stupid things. This will never change, so don’t try to force it, just learn to live with it. 7) There is nothing wrong with your breasts. We love ALL breasts, including yours. 8) Don’t try and find answers to what men want in magazines like Cosmo, just ask us. 9) Don’t be surprised if we don’t know what we want. 10) Don’t try and tell us what we want. 11) If you wouldn’t watch the action movie with us, then don’t ask us to go to the chick flick with you.

NEW YOU – FOR MEN

Now that 2013 has arrived, many of us will indulge in a bit of navel gazing. We will look at our flaws, faults, bad habits, and failed ambitions, and resolve to do better in the future. While we all know New Year’s resolutions are far easier to make than they are to keep, it doesn’t stop us from promising ourselves a more successful, more productive and happier year than the last one. The New Year is a time many men rethink their lives and make plans to get their health back on track. Are you one of them? We all agree, without your health, you have nothing. Here are 5 wonderful “New Year Resolutions Just for Men”.

New Year’s Resolution No. 1: Get Fit

At least 40% of adults make one or more resolutions each year, and at least two-thirds of them vow to change something unhealthy about themselves; the popular resolutions concern weight gain, fitness, and smoking. When men want to get fit, they tend to aim for weight loss in the stomach area and muscular definition in the biceps, chest, and abdominals. But men need to participate in a balanced exercise program where you are involved Page 38

in strength training that is for all the major muscle groups. Participate in some aerobic exercise, because that’s going to help you to expend energy and burn calories; also, good nutrition is crucial to fitness success. You need the whole package if you want to get optimal results. Until you lose body weight and body fat overall, people aren’t going to see the fruits of your labour. There’s no such thing as spot reducing - targeting certain areas of the body for fat and weight loss. When people lose weight, it usually comes off all over the body. The idea is to move the body, doing anything from running, hiking, walking, or martial arts. With any new or renewed activity, it is important to start slowly, gradually raising intensity. Starting out at a level that is too aggressive could cause pain, injury, and a sense of dejection. Get started and good luck!

New Year’s Resolution No. 2: Watch What You Eat

Meat and potatoes have somehow been associated with manly men. For some men, it’s a macho thing to eat a lot of red meat, I guess you think, “we’re supposed to be the hunters, and we bring home the deer and elk.” Diets that promote large amounts of protein and fat, like the low-carb diets, are really not the way to go. To lose weight, you need a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Three servings of lowfat dairy can also be beneficial. Besides improving bone health, some studies show calcium may make it easier to shed pounds. Instead of a beefsteak, try tuna or salmon steaks. A turkey burger could replace a beef burger. There are also vegetarian meat substitutes.

New Year’s Resolution No. 3: Go to the Doctor

Do you have a twisted ankle, back pain, blood in the urine, an enlarged mole, or unexplained sadness lasting more

1010 Westridge Road. Strathmore, AB T1P1H8 than a couple of weeks? These are all good reasons to see a physician. Yet plenty of men simply don’t do it. Men make 130 million fewer visits to the doctor than women do, and that’s not including childbirth visits. Men tend to discount pain and see themselves as indestructible, especially at younger ages. I’m thinking this comes from the idea that big boys need to be tough and they don’t cry. Men think of themselves as providers and protectors. A great percentage of the time men go to the doctor is because their wives send them. By the time they go, however, their condition could have progressed to more troublesome stages. These are the recommended screening tests for men: Cholesterol Checks. Have your cholesterol screened at least every five years, starting at age 35. Have it done at age 20 if you smoke, have diabetes, or have a family history of heart disease. Blood Pressure. Have it checked at least every two years. Colorectal Cancer Tests. Begin testing at age 50. Diabetes. Have a test done if you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Depression. Talk to your doctor if you’ve felt sad for two weeks straight, and have had little interest in normally pleasurable activities. Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Ask your doctor whether you should be screened. Prostate Cancer Screening. Talk to your doctor about the risk and benefits of performing the prostate-specific antigen test, or the digital rectal exam.

New Year’s Resolution No. 4: Quit Smoking

Giving the nicotine habit the boot is one of the most popular resolutions for both men and women. It is a difficult task, and for some people, success does not come until www.thenewsyneighbour.com

after multiple tries. There are a number of resources for support. You may visit your primary care doctor and/or join a smoking cessation program in person, online, or by phone. You may consider medication, or nicotine replacements such as patches, gums, sprays, inhalers, and lozenges. A relapse is a real possibility, but it’s important to look forward and avoid negative thinking. Don’t give up and don’t get yourself in a defeatist attitude that you can’t do it. If one smoking cessation method doesn’t work for you, try another one. You may also consider different support groups as some may work better than others. Don’t forget that you can also enlist the support of family and friends. Many former smokers have found loved ones as a vital source of encouragement.

New Year’s Resolution No. 5: Ease Stress

Got stress? Who doesn’t? Men have their lion’s share, partly because society hasn’t given them the freedom to process pressures that well. A lot of times men will hold things inside ... they won’t talk about them. The pent-up negative feelings can cause feelings of anger and hopelessness, promote destructive behaviour, or manifest themselves in physical ailments. Research shows stress can have adverse effects on the cardiovascular, nervous, immune, and digestive systems. Exercise as a “masculine” way of relieving tension: If you’ve had a stressful day and you work out, you burn off stress hormones. It also helps to identify what is causing the stress, and try to deal with the issue. Sometimes, this may mean talking to your girlfriend, wife, or a minister. If none of these methods work, talk with your doctor. Information for this article and excerpt’s were taken from the WebMD. http://men.webmd.com/features

A Womans Week at the Gym We have had so many people ask us to send them this article, that we decided to publish it again. It really is hilarious!

This is dedicated to anyone attempting to get into a regular workout routine. Dear Diary, For my birthday this year, my husband purchased a special gift, for one week of personal training at the local health club. Although I am still in great shape, I was a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago; I decided it would be fun. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. Friends and family all encouraged me and seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club also encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress. MONDAY: Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Christo waiting for me. He is something of a Greek god - with blond hair, dancing eyes, and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!! Christo gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skilful way in which he conducted his aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring! Christo was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time he was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!! TUESDAY: I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Christo made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then he put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. His rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT! It’s a whole new life for me. WEDNESDAY: The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn’t try to steer or stop. Christo was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. His voice is a little too perky for that early in the morning and when he scolds, he gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying. My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Christo put me on the stair monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Christo told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. He said some other crap too. THURSDAY: Butthole was waiting for me with his vampire-like teeth exposed as his thin, cruel lips were pulled back in afull snarl. I couldn’t help being a half an hour late-- it took me that long to tie my shoes. He took me to work out with dumbbells. When he was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. He sent some skinny witch to find me. Then, as punishment, he put me on the rowing machine - which I sank. FRIDAY: I hate that demon Christo more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anaemic, anorexic, little aerobics instructor. If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat him with it. Christo wanted me to work on my triceps. I don’t have any triceps! And if you don’t want dents in the floor, don’t hand me the darn barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich. The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Health

Why couldn’t it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director? SATURDAY: Satan left a message on my answering machine in his grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing his voice made me want to smash the machine with my planner; however, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel. SUNDAY: I’m having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my husband will choose a gift for me that is fun like a root canal or a hysterectomy. I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!!

We’ll make you smile at

An Atheist and a Bear An atheist was taking a walk through the woods, admiring all that evolution had created. “What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!” he said to himself. As he was walking along the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. When he turned to see what the cause was, he saw a 7-foot grizzly charging right towards him. He ran as fast as he could. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in, so he ran even faster, crying in fear. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. His heart was pounding and he tried to run even faster. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up, but saw the bear right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him. At that moment, the Atheist cried out “Oh my God!” Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. Even the river stopped moving. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky, “You deny my existence for all of these years; teach others I don’t exist, and even credit creation to a cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?” The atheist looked directly into the light “It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as Christian now, but perhaps could you make the bear a Christian?” “Very well,” said the voice. The light went out. The river ran again. And the sounds of the forest resumed. And then the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head and spoke: “Lord, for this food which I am about to receive, I am truly thankful.”

Pet Love Stories They’re true companions

As any pet owner knows, pets don’t have the same type of hang-ups or grudges that humans have. They’re perfectly willing to walk with you through life, comfort you in your troubles and cheer you on when life is grand. Mary McCoy said it well when she summed up her relationship with her dog, “He has been a part of my whole marriage and we have made some wonderful memories with him by our side.” Mary’s not alone. Hear how other pet owners summarize the love and companionship of their pets: “The perfect human would have the attitude of a dog -- loving, loyal, happy, protective, faithful and honest. I wish I could be more like my dogs because every day is the best day of their life. Dogs are amazing.” -- Kate Sokolewicz “There is nothing like the love of a dog. All of mine are rescues; two having been abused, yet the first day they trusted me with all their hearts. Dogs are unique in that they’re nothing like humans; they can go through hell, yet forgive easily and they put their human before themselves. That kind of love is the best feeling in the world. I only hope I can sufficiently repay them.” -- Heather Delmas “Two months after getting married, my husband was deployed to Afghanistan for a year. I was all alone in a new city with no friends or family, but thank God for my dog! She was always there to keep me company and help me meet new friends.” -- Ashley Torresala “I have two dogs and two cats who have gotten me through a divorce, two major career changes, the death of my parents, my new marriage, two rounds of in vitro fertilization, two miscarriages and a year-long depression. My pets have been by my side, crying with me, walking, cuddling and giving complete, unconditional love. I never would have made it through all that without them.” -- Lisa Alexander

They’re incredible business partners

When you go into business with your pet, you know that your partner will never double-cross you, will always pull his weight and will never let you down. It takes guts to turn your love of pets into a business, but for those owners who have done it, they know the experience is worth the struggle. “I love my pug dog, Lola, and after trying to figure out what direction to take with my business -- I realized that I had to follow my doggie bliss and specialize in dog photography. It was the best move I ever made and it probably wouldn’t have happened without Lola in my life.” -- Cheryl Colombo “In a nutshell, my dog, Poncho, has changed my life. After my husband and I adopted him in 2003, we set out to learn as much about dog behaviour as possible. Long story short, I am now a certified professional dog trainer! This is my third career and the one I love!” -- Joan Hunter Mayer

Funny Facebook Statuses I paused Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory to go buy a Snickers. This is why I can’t watch Breaking Bad. Are we getting dumber? People are misspelling everything even with auto-correct. I hate mornings, and Mondays and working, but other than that I am entirely happy! I used to think air was free. Then I bought a bag of potato chips... The Wizard of Oz is the ultimate chick flick. It’s about two women trying to kill each other over shoes. Remember that time we came to work and we were excited? Me neither! There’s a fine line between being tan and looking liked you rolled around in Doritos! Today I sent out a text saying, “Hey, I lost my phone, will you call it?” 12 people called me... I need smarter friends. When I’m on my death bed, I want my final words to be, “I left one million dollars in the...” Thank you Facebook, I can now farm without going outside, cook without being in my kitchen, feed fish I don’t have & waste an entire day without having a life.

That awkward moment when someone “Likes” one of your old pictures and you know they are digging through everything on your page. I just replaced the can of air freshener in the office bathroom with an air horn. And now we wait... If you love someone, set them free. If they don’t come back, call them up later when you’re drunk. My daughter is at the age where she can start doing chores and now suddenly this whole “having kids” thing makes a lot more sense. Our phones fall, we panic and our heart races. Our friends fall, we laugh and point. Common sense is like deodorant; those that need it the most don’t use it. People think I’m too patronizing (that means I treat them as if they’re stupid). I just thought of a brand new social networking tool for the kids. Are you ready for it? It’s called, “outside”. I’m going to change my name to Benefits. Now when you add me on Facebook it will say, “You Are Now Friends with Benefits. Want to embarrass yourself? Go back a couple years on your own Facebook. I was the kid that would restart the video game whenever I knew I was going to lose.

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais

My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. Thanks to all those who’ve supported the Newsy Neighbour and read my reviews over the last little while—and here’s to another year filled with promise! Yours in Truth, www.derekdonais.com Derek Donais

The Instigator: How Gary Bettman Remade the League and Changed the Game Forever Jonathon Gatehouse Penguin Books, Ltd., 2012 ISBN: 9780670065929

It seems people either love him or hate him. And with the NHL lockout heading past the ninety-day mark and into the Christmas holidays, I thought it was time to look at the biography of Gary Bettman, the man who began this latest war between professional hockey players and team owners with the third lockout in league history. The book, entitled The Instigator: How Gary Bettman Remade the League and Changed the Game Forever, is informative and offers a good deal of insight into the figure—hero to some, villain to others—who is firmly in control of the National Hockey League. Author Jonathon Gatehouse begins with a glimpse into Bettman’s life and lifestyle with brief looks at his rather humble beginnings, his introduction to the management side of professional sports within the National Basketball Association, and then his ascension to the number one position in the offices of the NHL. The chapters that follow examine the twenty-year-and-counting Bettman era within the context of several topics, from the state of the game when he first came aboard, to the departure of the Winnipeg Jets and Quebec Nordiques and the league’s expansion to the southern United States, and finally to the analysis of the conditions that have led to the current labour standoff. Not having a deep understanding of the business of hockey, I found this latter part very insightful and also somewhat prophetic—or at least very helpful in explaining why a business that last year made over three billion dollars in revenue seems bent on forgoing all of it because the parties involved can’t come to a sensible financial compromise. The portrait that Gatehouse paints of Bettman is of a man who has an ‘A-type’ personality, is meticulous to the point of obsession, and one who never forgets a slight—characteristics that do not necessarily go hand in hand with compromise. Donald Fehr garners a small section of coverage toward the end of the book as well. From Gatehouse’s descriptions, the leader of the NHLPA is at least as committed and goal-driven as the commissioner, if not even more so, and has a similarly supersized ego. Again, not a good mix for smooth or collegial negotiations. If you’re interested in the more recent history of the NHL, in the politics of sport, or in simply reading about some interesting and influential people, The Instigator will not disappoint. And, if you’re a fan of the NHL, it’s not like you don’t have time now to sit down and read a good book, anyway. “I’m not looking at doing anything stupid, like using an orange puck.” —Gary Bettman, from the Toronto Star, February, 1993 Page 46

If you are ready to start the new year off with home improvements in mind, you are not alone. 1) Asses your home and make a wish list/ necessity list. A wish list item could be upgrading to granite counter tops, while a necessity item could be leaky plumbing pipes that have to be replaced as soon as possible. 2) How long do you plan to be in your home? If you want to get your return on investment, ensure you upgrade the parts of your home that home buyers are interested in. 3) If you want to get your return on investment (ROI), ensure you upgrade the parts

of your home that home buyers are interested in. 4) Know your budget. Use the first few months of the New Year to plan your project and budget without stress. 5) Seek out the proper permits. Hire a professional general contractor or trades person if you are unclear of what permits are required. 6) Be flexible. Even though you would like your new kitchen remodel done in 8 weeks, the reality is it may take 12 weeks 7) Have a good time: Even though there is a serious side to home improvement, it should also be fun and rewarding. If you aren’t going to enjoy your hard work and effort, hire a professional and leave the hard work to them.

How to shower like a woman

How to shower like a man

Take off clothing and place it in sectioned laundry hamper according to lights and darks. Walk to bathroom wearing long robe. If y...ou see husband along the way, cover up any exposed areas. Look at your womanly physique in the mirror -- make mental note to do more sit-ups/leg-lifts, etc. Get ...in the shower. Use wash cloth , long loofah, wide loofah and pumice stone...... Wash your hair once with cucumber and sage shampoo with 43 added vitamins. Wash your hair again to make sure it’s clean. Condition your hair with grapefruit mint conditioner. Wash your face with crushed apricot facial scrub for 10 minutes until red. Wash entire rest of body with ginger nut and jaffa cake body wash. Rinse conditioner off hair. Shave armpits and legs. Rinse off. Turn off shower. Squeegee off all wet surfaces in shower. Spray mold spots with Tilex.. Get out of shower. Dry with towel the size of a small country. Wrap hair in super absorb ent towel. Return to bedroom wearing long robe and towel on head. If you see husband along the way, cover up any exposed areas.

Take off clothes while sitting on the edge of the bed and leave them in a pile. Walk naked to the bathroom. If you see wife along the way, shake wiener at her making the woo-woo sound. Look at your manly physique in the mirror. Admire the size of your wiener and scratch your butt. Get in the shower. Wash your face. Wash your armpits. Blow your nose in your hands and let the water rinse them off. Fart and laugh at how loud it sounds in the shower. Spend majority of time washing privates and surrounding area. Wash your butt, leaving those coarse butt hairs stuck on the soap. Wash your hair. Make a Shampoo Mohawk. Pee. Rinse off and get out of shower. Partially dry off. Fail to notice the water on floor because curtain was hanging out of tub the whole time. Admire wiener size in mirror again. Leave shower curtain open, wet mat on floor, and light and fan on. Return to bedroom with towel around waist. If you pass wife, pull off towel, shake wiener at her and make the woo-woo sound again. Throw wet towel on bed.

Home Made Protein Bars There are plenty of reasons to make your own protein bars. First, it’s economical! You’ll save a lot of money, particularly if you have a habit of buying single bars one a time. Even better, you can customize your bars to your taste preferences, avoid any allergens, and leave out ingredients you don’t want. You can make a bar with high quality protein, whole grains, real nuts or fruit, flaxseeds, whichever sweetener you prefer, and skip all the long-named chemical ingredients (preservatives and fortifications) that you may not need or want in your snack. Plus, they taste awesome if you have a good recipe! You can also cut the bars into different sizes, depending on how substantial a meal/snack you want the bar to be. These bars provide healthy fats from natural peanut butter and flaxseed. Plus, thanks to whole grain oats, they give you 4 grams of fibre. Cooking with whey protein can be tricky – it tends to dry out baked goods – so I keep the cooking time brief and wrap them up soon after baking them. The resulting protein bar recipe below is my personal favourite of all the protein bars I’ve Page 52

The Newsy Neighbour

Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Protein Bars • Cooking oil spray • ½ cup plain oatmeal (quick oats, not instant) • ½ cup unsweetened soymilk • ¼ cup egg whites (2 whites) • ½ tablespoon vanilla extract • 1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder (1/3 cup) • ½ cup Splenda granulated or sugar • ¼ cup milled flaxseed • 2 tablespoons white whole wheat flour or whole wheat pastry flour • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder • ¾ teaspoon baking powder • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 6 tablespoons natural peanut butter 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray an 8×8” pan with cooking oil spray. 2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine oats and milk; cook for 60 seconds. Stir and allow to cool; mix in egg whites and vanilla. 3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whey protein, Splenda, flaxseed, flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. 4. Add oatmeal mixture to dry ingredients; mix just until everything is moist. Spread batter in pan. 5. Place peanut butter in microwave safe bowl and heat for 45 seconds or until melted. Spoon peanut butter over batter in pan and swirl with knife tip. 6. Bake for 10 minutes; allow to cool completely before cutting into 6 bars. Wrap each individually in plastic wrap and store in the freezer or refrigerator. Unwrap and microwave 30 seconds to warm. Makes 6 servings Per serving: 195 calories, 11 g total fat, 2 g saturated fat, 5 mg cholesterol, 14 g total carbohydrate, 4 g dietary fiber, 12 g protein, 218 mg sodium. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
