From the Publishers It is very fortuitous that one of our themes this month is horses, as I am writing this Editor’s note from Wyoming! We have traveled through Montana and are heading to North Dakota. Now, let’s talk HORSES. These states are truly cattle, horse and antelope havens. I guess that’s because there really isn’t much of anything else here. Hundreds of miles of sage bush, plateaus and pine. Well, that’s not altogether fair - we did drive through a couple mountain ranges and I was surprised to find out that a few of the mountains were 2000 feet higher than the Rockies! If you have never been to Cody, Wyoming it is worth the drive. Starting in June, they have a rodeo every single night and an incredible museum all about Buffalo Bill, the Plains Indians, Western art and the History of Guns - that’s the place you want to be if a war breaks out! We saw Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park which is as faithful as The Newsy Neighbour, but it happens every hour. Well, our new distribution system seems to be a huge hit as we have had a lot of positive feedback! As you know, in Chestermere the delivery is now door to door as well as in Strathmore and Langdon. We are delivered with The Strathmore Standard everywhere now except Chestermere. Getting back to rodeos, absolutely make sure you attend The Strathmore Heritage Days and Rodeo from July 29th thru August 3rd. Did you know it is the 3rd largest Rodeo in Canada - WOW!! Also, make sure you check out The Unique Boutique, it has become very popular - so don’t forget if you have a unique item you want to advertise, get a hold of us.

If you would like to be involved in any of our distribution areas please give us a call! With everybody working together as a team we will get the job done in no time. Let us know what you think about this idea – it would be another way of The Newsy Neighbour giving back to the communities - a responsibility we feel very strongly about! Special Feature CAMPING CAMPING Special Feature Special Feature Special Feature Camping Basics - Leave No Trace Nobody likes a dirty campground. Whether you are primitive camping or RVing at a campground resort, a little effort is all that need be expended in order to ensure that the next camper arriving at the campsite after you will enjoy it just as much. • Leave No Trace It’s all about respect for nature. If campers would just leave their campsites the way they found them (assuming it was clean to begin with), then we will all be doing our share to promote camping as it should be. • Pack It In, Pack It Out • Another way of saying “leave no trace,” a concept which I cannot emphasize enough. If you are a backcountry camper, this is particularly important because there are no dumpsters in the backcountry. • Gray Water This is old dishwater, which should not be dumped just anywhere. In the backcountry be sure to dump gray water away from any fresh water sources and use biodegradable soap. Campgrounds usually have designated areas for dumping gray water. • Ashes from the Grill Don’t dump your ashes on the ground. Either dump them in the campfire ring, or dump them in a bag and put the bag in the campground dumpster. • Laundries, Restrooms and Showers Simply clean up after yourself. If you’re ingenious and the campground has no laundry, you might consider a shower with your clothes on. In the backwoods, take appropriate measures to cover human waste. • Fish Cleaning Stations Use them! Don’t clean your catch at the campground. • Dumpsters Be sure to take along some plastic garbage bags to collect trash. The last thing you should do before leaving the campground is to make one more round and pick up any trash and put it in the dumpster.
Above all, remember the basic rule: Leave No Trace!
Camping Games A game of tag where players tie balloons around their ankles and try to stomp others’ balloons. Materials: Balloons (one for each person) and string/ dental floss How To Play: Each player gets a balloon and a piece of string. Before starting players must blow up their balloon and tie one end of the string (string is no longer than 1 ft) to their ankle and the other end to the balloon. The facilitator makes sure that players know the confined area they have to stay in. When the facilitator says go, players must try to pop other player’s balloons by only using their feet. When a player has his or her balloon popped, he or she must exit the playing field. The last one remaining with their balloon is the winner. Something that can be helpful is to decrease the playing field size as more players are eliminated.
Musical Paper Plates Musical Chairs with paper plates instead of chairs Materials: Paper Plates How To Play: Spread paper plates out around the room. Have the players form a big circle around them and begin walking in a circle. When the music stops, players must run and sit on a paper plate. Have one less plate than players. Whichever player fails to sit on a paper plate is eliminated. Take a paper plate out and restart the next round. Play until there is only one player left.

RV Batteries, Solar Panels and Inverters What You Need to Know By Vicky Weisenburger
The sole purpose of RV Solar Panels is to keep the RV batteries charged. A common misconception is by adding Solar Panels alone the RV is equipped to run 110 volt appliances. It’s the Inverter in the Solar Power System that converts RV battery DC power to AC power; allowing the ability to run 110 volt appliances. The Inverter converts the DC power to AC power at a ratio of 10 - 1. This means for every 1 amp needed to run the appliance 10 amps is drawn from the battery. To find amperage of an appliance it is Watt/Volt=Amp. For example a 1500 watt 4 slice toaster draws 12.5 amps (1500/120=12.5). What does 12.5 amps mean in terms of battery life? In terms of battery life, it all depends on the capacity of the battery. To find battery capacity it is Volts x Amp hours=Watts. For example 2 deep cycle 6 volt batteries, connected in series, rated 232 amp hours results in a capacity of 2,784 watts (12 x 232=2784). A 1500 Watt 4 slice toaster, using batteries in the example, could run steadily for 1.856 hours. Caution: if the RV battery falls below 11.2 Volts, appliances needing 12 Volt power will not operate; this includes refrigerator, furnace and hot water tank. DC capacity and cycle life of battery varies depending on the type www.thenewsyneighbor.com
and make of battery; deep cycle RV battery vs shallow cycle vehicle battery. Shallow cycle is when the top 20% or less of the battery is discharged and recharged. A Shallow cycle battery has thinner plates with a large surface area. Shallow cycle batteries are like an Olympic Sprinter, giving up a lot of power over a relatively short period of time needed for starting a vehicle. Deep cycle is when up to 80% of the battery capacity is discharged and recharged. Deep cycle batteries have thicker plates and smaller surface area. Deep cycle batteries are like a long distance runner, giving up power over much longer periods of time. A battery left sitting discharged or below 80% charge will begin to sulfate resulting in compromised battery plates. Important to remember a weakened battery leaches power from a good battery and you are only as strong as the weakest battery. It can soon become overwhelming figuring out which Solar Power System is the right one for you. The internet is great source of information; unfortunately sorting through all the information can quickly become a mountainous challenge. When it comes to Solar Power System the old saying “you get what you pay for” rings true. Consulting an Expert alleviates the pain of finding you made the wrong choice using the “trial and error” method. Strathmore RV knows you work hard and deserve to play hard the 21st Century way in a fully functional RV. Let us help you make the right choice for your RV http://strathmorerv.com. We have more information on camping, camping tips & tricks and on maintaining your RV our sister website http://extremervguy.com.

Get well soon Wilf!
It’s the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth! The Calgary Stampede takes the spotlight this month and if you have been around the World Professional Chuckwagon circuit, or the Stampede, you know the name Wilf Kaiser. Kaiser has worn many hats in the world of chuckwagon racing from a fan, a sponsor and a long time WPCA board member. He is a past president of the World Professional Chuckwagon Association. In 2004 as he was presented with the George Norman Lifetime Builder’s Award and in 2009, he was the Calgary Booster Club Sportsman of the year. In a world where there are too many “takers”, Kaiser is a “giver”! In addition to his work with the WPCA, the Calgary landman has been an active volunteer for minor football for close to 40 years and is an active member of the volunteer Calgary Grey Cup Committee. This is where the story takes a sad and strange twist. In April, Kaiser went to El Salvador with a group from his church to build houses for the less fortunate. I told you he was a giver! On his mission he picked up a nasty parasite and had to be treated in hospital in San Salvador. He was not feeling well when he returned home and on May 8th he had to have emergency surgery to remove 95 percent of his bowel. The surgeon could not believe he was still alive and even talking prior to the surgery. For the past two months, with his wife Marilyn at his side and at least two more surgeries, Wilf has been battling like a champion in ICU. While he may not be able to make an appearance at this year’s Calgary Stampede, our thoughts and prayers are certainly with you Wilf as you deal with the healing process. Wilf has lots of friends, family and fans and the family has set up a website to keep everyone informed. If you are interested go to wilkaiser.webs.ca The CFL season begins! As I mentioned last month in this article, there are questions, lots of questions surrounding the 2011 Calgary Stampeders. It’s pretty clear to me the Stamps Page 16
The Newsy Neighbour
are going to stumble a little bit in the early going. As much as it pains me to say, the Saskatchewan Rough Riders will be the class of the Western conference. Darian Durant is the key and the feeling is says here he will have an MOP season and lead the Riders to first place. I really like what Wally Bouno has done with the BC Lions. The Lions will be the most improved team in the Canadian Football League this season and if Travis Lulay stays healthy could challenge the Riders for first place. After a shaky start, the Stampeders will get their act together but I don’t see them hosting a home playoff game this season. The Stamps will finish third. The Edmonton Eskimos are completely rebuilt. They have a new head coach, a crazy amount of new players and I just can’t see them challenging for a playoff spot. Maybe next year Eskimos fans! Olympic Oval update! It’s an exciting time for the Olympic Oval. The best training center in the world at the University of Calgary is finally getting a new roof. The 9.7 million dollar project started last March and later this month, the world famous ice techs will begin to make ice. Construction on the outside of the Oval will continue into October, but with the ice being prepped, the National team should be ready to go by August 1st. The Olympic Oval is planning to hold their summer camps in August. The Grand re-opening will take place on October 15th.
About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for close to 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on QR77 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

Smart Alick Answer #1: The cop got out of his car and the kid who was stopped for speeding rolled down his window. “I’ve been waiting for you all day,” the cop said. The kid replied, “Yeah, well I got here as fast as I could.” When the cop finally stopped laughing, he sent the kid on his way without a ticket.
Smart Alick Answer #2:
A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but she couldn’t find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, “Do these turkeys get any bigger?” The stock boy replied, “No ma’am, they’re dead.”

HORSE HEALTH – THE SIMPLE BASICS
Horse Allergies: A horse can exhibit many different symptoms when suffering from an equine allergy. Some of the most common symptoms of horse allergies are tearing eyes, coughing, or raised lumps on the horse’s shoulders. Other horses may simply act as if they aren’t feeling well. Attentive horse owners can usually tell when a horse is not feeling well and acting unusual. If your horse has had a change in behaviour, you should have the horse evaluated by your local vet. Your vet can tell you more accurately if your horse is suffering from allergies or some other equine illness. Colic Basics: Colic is the most common medical ailment in the horse. Over the past 25 years there have been great strides in both the prevention and treatment of equine colic. Improvements in deworming products and schedules, equine dentistry, and management practices have helped to reduce the number of cases. Advances in veterinary knowledge and the development of new drugs and surgical techniques have helped to improve the survival rate for horses suffering with colic. Still today, each year 10-11% of the horse population suffers from this disease. One of the causes of this illness, sand ingestion, can be a substantial risk to certain horses.
The Horse Seller
The seller said, “There’s something you should know about the horse. He stops running when you say, ‘Amen,’ and he starts running when you say, ‘Praise the Lord.’” “No problem,” the other man said. “I’ll take it.” The man began to ride away on the horse. He decided to test the horse. “Amen,” he said, and the horse stopped on the road just as he was told. “Praise the Lord!” The horse took off running like mad. The rider held on as tight as he could. As he noticed they were racing towards a cliff, he begin screaming, “Stop!!! Stop, you stupid horse!! Whoah!!” Nothing worked. So he began praying, “Dear God, PLEASE let the horse stop! PLEASE!!! AMEN!” The horse stopped right at the edge of the cliff. With great enthusiasm and joy the man screamed, “PRAISE THE LORD!!”
Two Cowboys from Texas
Two Cowboys from Texas were sitting at a bar, when a young lady nearby began to choke on a hamburger. She gasped and gagged, and one Texan turned to the other and said, That little gal is havin’ a bad time. I’m agonna go over there and help.” He ran over to the young lady, held both sides of her head in his big, Texan hands, and asked, “Kin ya swaller?” Gasping, she shook her head no. He asked, “Kin ya breathe?” Still gasping, she again shook her head no. With that, he yanked up her skirt, pulled down her panties and licked her butt. The young woman was so shocked that she coughed up the piece of hamburger and began to breathe on her own. The Texan sat back down with his friend and said, “Ya know, it’s sure amazin’ how that hind-lick maneuver always works.”
Softening Old Age in Horses with Proper Care: As a result of better nutrition and health care, horses can enjoy productive lives in their twenties while continuing to live a long life into their thirties. A common ailment that affects older equines is Cushing’s disease and unfortunately it is incurable. Another term for Cushing’s disease is hyperadrenalcorticism, which is a result of a slow growing, benign tumour on the pituitary gland that does not spread to other areas of the body and does not metastasize. Horses and the Drinking Issue: In addition to being large animals horses will often drink a lot. Depending on the weather and their activity horses can drink between six and ten gallons of water a day. However, horses can also drink and urinate excessively from several diseases both common and uncommon. A condition known as polydipsia is one common condition that has several causes. Horse Saliva Syndrome: A Common Fungal Disease: Saliva syndrome is actually a fungal disease. Doubtlessly, you have encountered a horse that looks perfectly healthy with no problems walking, a shiny coat, and a good disposition only to notice an excessive flow of saliva from the mouth that seems to be almost endless. Controlling Horse Ringworm and Rain Rot Skin Diseases: One good indicator of a horse’s general physical condition is the state of its coat. A horse with a smooth, shiny coat is usually in good health, while a rough, dull, or patchy coat is a sign of underlying health problems. A horse’s skin is constantly under attack by a wide variety of viruses, bacteria, and biting insects. Symptoms of skin diseases can range from a simple, isolated skin lesion to generalized itching and hair loss over the entire body. Two of the most common varieties of skin diseases are ringworm, also called dermatophytosis, and rain rot, which is also known as dermatophilosis.

Size: 7.31 x 4.82" Jun.11 A cowboy rode into town and stoppedInsertion at date: a saAccount Ex: B.Edwards Designer: J.Halliday loon for a drink. Unfortunately, the locals had a habit of picking on strangers. When he finished his drink, he found his horse had been stolen. He went back into the bar and with a quick move of his hands, he flipped his guns into the air, caught them above his head without even looking and fired at the ceiling. Which one of you sidewinders stole my hoss!?” he yelled. No one answered.
“Alright, I’m gonna have anotha beer, and if my hoss ain’t back outside by the time I finnish, I’m gonna do what I dun in Texas! And I don’t like to have to do what I dun in Texas! Some of the locals shifted restlessly. He had another beer, walked outside, and his horse was back! As he swung up into the saddle and started to ride out of town, the bartender ran out of the saloon and asked, “Say partner, before you go... what happened in Texas?” The cowboy turned back and said, “I walked home.”

Publication: Neighbour Colour:facebook, CMYK (yellow and black) I posted a Newsy simple question on “What is something Production: T.Sarantis you’ve found yourself saying to a child that you never thought you would? The answers that came in have had me rolling on the floor ever since. Here are a few of them for your uninhibited laughing pleasure. We don’t stick things in people’s butts, honey. When we poo in the toilet it stays there! Emma, do NOT feed your boogers to your sister. We do not put peeps in the microwave. We do not put mommy’s lipstick in our bellybutton. We do NOT put our naked butts on the dining room table. No, zebras do not have boobs! Don’t suck my toe! Stop licking the shopping cart. No! Don’t put the kitty in the potty! Try not to get poop all over your hands. If you got it off of the bottom of your shoe, it’s not a num-num! You blow on the dandelion, you don’t lick it! Why did you wipe your poop all over the wall? How many times have we talked about not trusting a fart? WHY are you licking peanut butter off the bottom of your foot? Spit that rock out, right now. No light sabers at the table. Do NOT let the dog lick the inside of your mouth! Please don’t sit on your brother’s head without underwear on.

LUSCIOUS JOYS - CAMPING One of our themes for the July Issue is Camping and we love to hit the road with our trusty trailer every chance we get. Well, no camping adventure would be the same without camping desserts – a must after a long day on the road or just an enjoyable day of snooping, hiking or sunning and reading. Camping desserts are soooo easy to make – you already have your fire blazing or your BBQ wafting those unbelievably incredible mouth watering smells. Now just grab some heavy-duty tinfoil and prepare your camping desserts. Everything always taste’s better in the fresh outdoor camping air – Enjoy your summer!
APPLE DELIGHT
You can make this recipe for as many people as you like – just use more of everything. 3 – 4 Apples Shelled walnuts Butter or maple syrup Cut apples into slices and take out the core. Place on heavyduty aluminum foil – add walnuts and butter or maple syrup, wrap up leaving a little opening in the top for ventilation. Place on campfire or BBQ and cook at least 45 minutes or until apples are soft but not mushy. ~ A camping recipe by Debby

PEACH SURPRIZE
From my old Girl Scout Days. Peach halves Mini marshmallows Brown sugar Pecans You can either make individual packets or a family pack. Take a can of peach halves and put into a foil packet. Add brown sugar and mini marshmallows. Pecans are optional. Wrap up your foil packet and place in hot coals until marshmallows are melted. You’ll have a delicious syrup and melted marshmallows around your warm peach. Mmmm good! ~ A camping recipe by Paije And now the best for last – these would be good with a special coffee of Grand Marnier, kahlua or bailey’s – don’t worry about the calories from the special coffee – it won’t matter after you eat one of these little beauties.
PINEAPPLE UP-SIDE-DOWN CAKE
Another old Girl Scout recipe – those girls really know how to have fun on their camping trips. 12 Cake donuts 1 ¼ cups brown sugar 1 ¼ sticks butter, softened 12 pineapple rings Slather butter on donuts – pack on brown sugar – top with pineapple. Seal tightly in foil packet, and cook on coals for 5 minutes. ~ A camping recipe by Cheryl Enjoy the best summer ever! ~ Kathryn Hartwell

You’ve always been there for me. Sometimes it even feels like you can read my mind. If I want to play, you call in a Rottweiler with a tongue so long it nearly trips on it or at least one dog who looks exactly like me. And on our best days, you’ll even send a bouncy little puppy over for me to chase. It’s on these days that I know you love me too. I know that we’re soul mates. Your daily life is rife with power struggles, vicious fights, flirtation and heart break. You always know who’s humping who and who’s hoarding the soggy tennis balls. But despite the drama, every day you welcome me into your grounds — to chew your sticks and dig up your dirt. You create a bubble where Chihuahuas and Great Danes can wrestle while their hipster parents watch on. Then everybody puts on their leashes and goes home. You’re an escape from the constant crush of people and concrete — one of the many things that make you so beautiful.

BODY PARTS – SKIN
Be your favorite pop star. A combination of Glee and High School Musical. Create, choreograph and perform in your own music video just like MTV.
Skin is a miracle garment. It’s soft, pliable, strong, waterproof, and self-repairing. Without your skin you would be nothing but a big squishy mess! Your skin is like a very large container. It’s the largest organ of your body, and without it, all your delicate insides would spill right out. Your skin doesn’t just cover you. It functions as protective wrapping. Along with a layer of fat underneath, it insulates you against all kinds of bumps, bangs and wear and tear. It keeps germs and water OUT and keeps your body’s fluids and salts IN.
Create Your Own Music Video Teddy Bear Tea Party
With your favorite Teddy Bear enjoy fun and creative ways pretending to have a picnic, dance in the park and a playful dance.

Your skin also contains glands, which manufacture sweat. With sweat, not only does its evaporation cool your body, but also it has a convenient way to get rid of chemicals it doesn’t need. Skin is alive. It’s made of many thin sheets of layers of flat, stacked cells in which you’ll find nerves, blood vessels, hair follicles, glands, and sensory receptors. . Look down at your hands for a minute. Even though you can’t see anything happening, your epidermis is hard at work. At the bottom of the epidermis, new skin cells are forming. When the cells are ready, they start moving toward the top of your epidermis. This trip takes about 2 weeks to a month. As newer cells continue to move up, older cells near the top die and rise to the surface of your skin. What you see on your hands (and everywhere else on your body) are really dead skin cells. In fact, every minute 30,000-40,000 dead skin cells fall from your body! In approximately a month’s time, your body has made a whole new layer of skin cells! The nerve endings in your dermis tell you how things feel when you touch them. They work with your brain and nervous system, so that your brain gets the message about what you’re touching. Is it the soft fur of a cat or the rough surface of your skateboard? Sometimes what you feel is dangerous, so the nerve endings work with your muscles to keep you from getting hurt. If you touch something hot, the nerve endings in your dermis respond right away: “Ouch! That’s hot!” The nerves quickly send this message to the brain or spinal cord, which then immediately commands the muscles to take your hand away. This all happens in a split second, without you ever thinking about it.

A pigment called melanin in your skin cells makes your skin darker, less makes it lighter. Sitting in the sun can also cause more melanin to be manufactured in your skin cells, which result in a suntan. Skin has mesodermal cells, pigmentation, or melanin provided by melanocytes, which absorb some of the potentially dangerous ultraviolet radiation (UV) in sunlight. It also contains DNA-repair enzymes that help reverse UV damage, and people who lack the genes for these enzymes suffer high rates of skin cancer. One form predominantly produced by UV light, malignant melanoma, is particularly invasive, causing it to spread quickly, and can often be deadly. So, be kind to the skin and look after it – although some believe that sunblock and sunscreen are both the same, they are not, although they have similar properties and are both important in caring of the skin. Sunblock is opaque and is stronger than sunscreen since it is able to block majority of the UVA/UVB rays and radiation from the sun, thus not having to be reapplied several times a day. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are two of the important ingredients in sunblock. Sunscreen is more transparent once applied to the skin and also has the ability to protect against UVA/UVB rays as well, although the sunscreen’s ingredients have the ability to break down at a faster rate once exposed to sunlight, and some of the radiation is able to penetrate to the skin. In order for sunscreen to be more effective it is necessary to consistently reapply and use a higher spf. If you really want that tan consider a controlled environment like a tanning bed, and don’t over do it! Hopefully, we will have a long hot beautiful summer – but don’t forget to protect your skin – you are just a big squishy mess of mush without it. Remember everything in moderation. By: Kathryn Hartwell
Vitamins for your beautiful skin:
Vitamin A, also known as retinoids, benefits the skin by normalizing keratinization, downregulating sebum production which contributes to acne, and reversing and treating photodamage, striae, and cellulite. Vitamin D and analogs are used to downregulate the cutaneous immune system and epithelial proliferation while promoting differentiation.Vitamin C is an antioxidant that regulates collagen synthesis, forms barrier lipids, regenerates vitamin E, and provides photoprotection. Vitamin E is a membrane antioxidant that protects against oxidative damage and also provides protection against harmful UV rays. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

What does your car mean to you? How you view your car may determine how well you tend to treat it. If you see it as a mere conveyance, you may give it little thought. If you consider it a proud possession, you probably will be more attentive. But no matter how you relate to your vehicle, it is important to care for it in specific ways that will maintain its reliability, preserve its drivability and protect its resale value. “I want to keep my car for as long as possible with minimum cost.” Well, if that is the case here is some information for you: Under hood checks - once a week or when refueling.
Oil change - Every 3000 miles with oil filter Washing - Every 2 to 4 weeks depending on conditions in your area. Garaged cars can go longer. Bird droppings should be removed as soon as possible as they can damage the finish. Waxing - Every 6 months to 1 year, or follow recommendations on the product you are using. Align & Balance - Check the tires for unusual wear or drifting right or left when on a straight road. Tire rotation Every 6 months to 1 year or follow manufacturer’s recommendations Tune up - Follow manufacturer’s recommendation. Winterizing - Every two years.

Importance of Oil Change in Vehicles! Changing vehicle oil on a regular basis is an extremely important task which offers a number of benefits to vehicle owners. Oil plays an extremely important role of providing lubrication in the engine. Apart from lubricating engine parts, the oil also performs other important roles like cleaning of engine, reducing pollutants, stopping the formation of sludge and cooling the vehicle. But, if it is not changed on a regular basis, it can result in engine failure and engine wear and tear thus causing huge loss in terms of vehicle performance. Some of the major benefits offered by oil change include improved gas mileage, improved engine stability and life, increased performance etc. All the benefits have been discussed below in detail. Improvement in gas mileage - This is one of the major benefits offered by routine oil change. If the engine oil is not changed from a long time, it becomes less viscous and starts losing its ability to lubricate and protect elements of engine. As a result, friction occurs between moving parts of the engine thus causing wear and tear. The more will be the friction, the more the engine needs to work in order to overcome that friction. On the other hand, new oil is extremely viscous, smooth and allows engine to move smoothly with smallest friction. Improves engine stability and life - This is another important benefit offered by regular oil change to vehicle owners. It improves the life of the engine thus making it functional for years to come. Oil change on a regular basis keeps engine clean. Clean engine shows less signs of ageing and offers an excellent performance for a longer time period. Increased performance - We all know that performance of a vehicle majorly depends on the condition of the engine. If it is good, www.thenewsyneighbor.com
performance increases. Stops noise produced by vehicle - egular changes of engine oil also prevent the parts of an engine from coming into contact with each other. This helps in reducing the noise made by the vehicle. Moreover, it also reduces the temperature of the engine. Thus, it becomes clear that regular oil change offers a number of advantages to vehicle owners. Getting oil change performed by an auto service centre is a good decision. There are many auto service centers offering such services to vehicle owners. One needs to do a deep research in order to find a reliable service center which uses quality products and motor oil. Individuals can take help from internet in this regard.

Get Ready For A Road Trip Here are some tips to make sure your summer road trip is the best it can be: Schedule a Full Service Check-up! Avoid the disappointment of spending your vacation at a roadside repair shop by taking the necessary precautions beforehand. A vehicle tune-up and fluid top-up two weeks prior should leave enough time if there are any necessary repairs. Choose The Right Fuel. Protect your engine by filling your tank with a high-quality gasoline. “Gasoline primarily contains carbon and hydrogen molecules, and combustion can create a residue, called “gunk”, which is a build-up of carbon particles on critical engine parts,” explains an engineer from Shell Canada.

MY FAVORITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF Piña colada, anyone? The piña colada is a sweet, rum -based cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut, and pineapple juice, either blended or shaken with ice. The piña colada has been the official beverage of Puerto Rico since 1978. My favourite thing about the piña colada is the coconut; well, unless I’m sitting on a lawn chair on some tropical beach and then that would be my most favourite thing. But here at home on my deck, the coconut is my favourite part. I love coconut and that could be why the Piña Colada is one of my favourite drinks. But coconut is really good for you, too, so I don’t feel so bad about all the calories I’m drinking because they are healthy calories - that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! But really, coconut or coconut oil is good for you; there is no mistaking the wonderful benefits of coconut oil for softening and healing dry and damaged skin and hair. Coconut oil works wonders for burns, cuts, and bruises and speeds the healing process while fighting infection. In East Africa, palm kernel oil is considered a health tonic and is the first medicine of choice among the native population, regardless of the illness. Traditional healers hold the coconut in such high regard that the coconut is commonly given the title “Tree of Life” in the Philippines. To get the best benefits of coconut oil, look for unrefined, virgin oils (Virgin Coconut Oil VCO) made from fresh coconuts that are the best cosmetic and food grade. Now, coconut is fabulous in drinks, but coconut oil is also fantastic for lots of other uses: As a conditioner – apply warm coconut oil to damp hair and keep covered for 15 minutes. Shampoo and enjoy luxuriant shiny hair. For fatigue – Adding coconut oil to your diet has been reported to increase energy, balance hormones and stimulate the thyroid gland. For Cholesterol – The cholesterol-lowering properties of coconut oil are a direct result of its ability to stimulate thyroid function. For a Metabolism Booster – It raises your metabolic rate, helping to release energy and promote weight loss. For Frying Oil – can be used to fry foods just like any other oil. For Skin Care – It forms a protective barrier to hold in mois-

ture but also penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin to help to keep connective tissues strong and supple. It is readily absorbed into the skin, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and will aid in exfoliating the outer layer of dead skin cells, making the skin smoother. Wow! I’m off to the store to buy some coconut oil! And if you are a do-it-yourselfer, you can easily make an anti-aging moisturizer with ½ tsp. coconut oil and 1 capsule vitamin E. The coconut oil combats inflammation and the vitamin is a potent anti-oxidant. Vitamin E helps the skin to repair and fights free-radical damage. Remove the coconut oil from your fridge (it will be solid) and put it in your palm. Break open the capsule of vitamin E and squeeze the contents into your palm. Rub your hands together until the oil liquefies and blends with the vitamin E. Gently apply it to your face just before you go to bed at night. Do this for a week and you will be astonished at the transformation of your skin. I knew I loved coconut for a reason – it surely is and always will be one of my favourite, fabulous and fantastic things! By: Kathryn Hartwell

FACE FASHION
About Amanda: Amanda has always had a passion for the health and beauty industry, which started at a very young age. She pursued these passions by completing the Makeup Artistry certification at Calgary’s Marvel College, and also is a Registered Massage Therapist working out of Calgary. She provides on-site makeup services for weddings, special events, and fashion shows.
Whenever I read magazine articles on makeup, I find that there are never really many tips or information when it comes to our cheks. It seems the focus is mostly on the eyes. Although we all know the eyes are the focal point of the face, at the same time that shouldn’t suggest that we should pay less attention to other important facial features. To me, cheekbones are to the face, as what a car body shape is to the car itself. What I mean by this, is that for example, when it comes to nice cars, people notice or pay immediate attention to the standout accessories such as wheels, headlights, or paint color. We notice these things firsthand, yet really, if the car’s bodywork, and shape were imperfect or not crafted in an eye-appealing way, it wouldn’t look as good all put together. This is the exact same concept as the face. We focus entirely on eyes, and lips, not even realizing just how important it is to accentuate, and highlight our cheeks. All you’re going to need for this, are two brushes, bronzer, and blush. For your brushes, you’ll need a medium angled contour brush, and a blush brush. Before any blush applications, use your bronzer. Take this time to contour or recede any areas of your facem including your cheekbones. Whether you have prominent cheekbones or not, accentuating them is always a great way to flatter your face. First, take your blush brush and dip it into your blush. Shake or tap off any excess. You can always start small, and work your way up, applying more if need be. Now there are a few techniques when applying blush, and some people swear by the ol’ ‘apple-of-the-cheeks’ application. But in my opinion, the most flattering application of blush is rather just beneath the apples of the cheeks. Start out by placing your brush in the hollow of your cheek, just underneath your apple. Then lightly drag it up diagonally, following under your natural cheekbone. You want to make sure you sweep it diagonally up towards your temple, or parallel to where your eye is. Gently continue this sweping motion until you have achieved a slight, pink flush over your cheeks. The trick to making your blush look really proportional and complementary, is to make it look even and well blended, not stripey or streaky looking. So lastly, take your angled brush, or even just a rounded fluff brush, and blend it really well by lightly sweeping over top of yout cheeks. Always remember that your blush and bronzer should never over power your face. Instead, it should subtley highlight the shape of your face, and give you a warm glow. If blush/bronzer are applied the right way, then you’ll find that the most minimal of makeup will actually be needed. The summertime look is all about healthy looking, sunkissed skin, so if you can master the blush and bronzer, the rest comes easy...just a few coats of mascara, and some lip gloss and you’re set for the summer! Men Need Care Too!
Gear up for Stampede at Noosa Beach Clothing
When we talk about Relaxation Massage or Reflexology Treatments, we automatically think that we are talking about women; but men need just as much care as women do. Men work hard at whatever they do, from working in the oil fields, to the corporate life or just being a Dad. They all need that extra care looking after themselves too! There are more and more men having massage, reflexology and natural holistic treatments these days, but there are still a lot of men that are not! Here are just some quick, simple and easy ways they can do this for themselves or with some help from a family member and/or partner. Self-Massage and selfreflexology are just two great ways to help care and relax after a busy day. Just by massaging their feet, hands or shoulders before or after a bath or shower, you can help the body unwind and let go of the stress that it has built up all day. Relaxing the body, mind and soul creates a peaceful sleep, making a better morning and a healthier you! This would be a great way to help Dad or your man to unwind, so go ahead and take his feet while watching TV and just start rubbing them; he will love you for it! It does not have to be on his birthday or Father’s Day, you can do this anytime, assisting him to become a healthier and happier man! By Cynthia Barnesky

GOOD HEALTH BEGINS WITH YOUR HEART DO YOU KNOW-------We are in the SICKEST time in history??????? DO YOU KNOW-------50% of the people you know will die of heart disease???????? DO YOU KNOW-------7 out of 10 people have high blood pressure and/ or diabetes and DON’T KNOW IT The heart anchors the cardiovascular system, which is composed of more than 100,000 miles of arteries, veins and capillaries running throughout every organ and area of your body. The Cardio network benefits: EVERY system in your body. NERVES: The nervous system--comprised of the brain, spinal cord, sensory neurons and nerves--conducts a myriad of sophisticated processes like vision, hearing, speech, touch, taste and smell. It also carries out the unconscious activities of the body, such as BREATHING, blinking, sweating to cool off, shivering to stay warm and KEEPING YOUR HEART BEATING. Oxygen is critical to brain health and proper functioning. Obstructions or clots within the arteries can cut off the oxygen supply and shut down critical brain functions. MAINTAINING a healthy cardiovascular system keeps your brain healthy and your nervous system performing at its peak. MUSCLES: You want a healthy nervous system to be signaling healthy muscles so you can stay strong and active. The muscular system is comprised of three distinct types of muscles--skeletal, cardiac and smooth.. These muscles provide balance, posture, movement and heat. Because
your muscle cells can’t store large amounts of energy, they rely on your circulatory system to deliver nutrients and carry away waste. Muscles ALSO depend on oxygen. The more work you require from your muscles, the more oxygen they need to function so, the more healthy your heart , arteries and veins are--the better your muscles will function. BONES: Your skeletal system is made up of 206 bones working together to protect vital organs, provide shape and form to your body, store key minerals and produce blood cells. Within our bones lie highly vascular tissues composed of living cells embedded in a fibrous organic matrix. To maintain healthy bone tissue, a constant supply of blood is needed to provide oxygen and nutrition to bone cells. Also, when a bone is broken, circulation is essential for its repair.

DIGESTION: Each time you eat, your digestive system breaks down the food into its essential elements and, in conjunction with your circulatory system, distributes those elements throughout your body. The entire system relies heavily on the cooperation of organs, nerves, hormones and the bloodstream to carry out its life-sustaining purpose. Maintaining a strong cardiovascular system and eating a balanced diet keeps your blood pumping and your digestive system running efficiently. EVERY structure in your body, right down to each individual cell, relies on a healthy cardiovascular system for proper health and function so----bless your heart and give it the care it deserves!!! Join me each month as I review a great read. My passions are fantasy and science-fiction, but I do read other genres. Really, I do. I also lean toward local authors, when possible, as I think we have a wealth of artistic talent here in Alberta. I currently live in Strathmore with my wife, Connie, and my two children, Kieran and Maia-Lynn. I’ve been a teacher for most of the time we’ve lived in the province, which is over a decade now. My debut novel, MetalMagic: Talisman, was released in September, 2010, and I’m diligently working on the sequel—that is, when I’m not reading books or writing for my column. Snowflake Obsidian: Memoir of a Cutter Kirsten Sage Steadman iUniverse, Inc. 2010 ISBN: 9781450265546
“I repeated the words and felt a sense of immediate relief. It was strange in some sort of Jeffrey Dahmer meets Ghandi way, I was able to love myself for hating myself. It seemed like a warped sense of love. But it was love without conditions.”
Every now and then, a book comes along that really grabs you and refuses to let go until you’ve turned the last page. It is the type of book that leaves an indelible mark; in some meaningful way, deep within, you feel that you’ve been given something special. Whether it’s immediately apparent or occurs to you at a later time—like a welcome sense of déjà vu—you know that touch has added to your essential self. About two years ago, I read the first few chapters of Snowflake Obsidian, by Kirsten Sage Steadman. After those few pages, I knew this work was an outlier, meaning that it stood apart from others of its kind, both in style and substance. Even though I’d only taken in a small part of the story, I believed it was penned by a very talented young writer. The story is one of self-discovery or, to be more precise, self-revelation. It deals with maturing into adulthood while being forced to revisit one’s identity. The main character, Willow, is a nineteen-year-old teenager on the verge of this momentous and difficult transition. She is initially quite carefree and happy, has many friends and seems well adjusted enough, but a series of events ensue that gradually erode the foundations of these illusions. She is set adrift in depression, betrayed by her supposed best friend and abandoned by the boy she believes to be her soul mate. Her support network of peers dissolves, leaving her to face the blackness without them. Willow’s life spirals downward until she spends her days in seclusion, gripped by fear and hopelessness, giving in to impulses of self-mutilation—cutting—to hide from herself and the rest of the outside world. If Willow is to come out of her self-imposed banishment, she must discover the truth about herself—about her attitudes and beliefs and how they have led her to this dark limbo. It could be that personal experiences with depression impacted my perception of the book’s message, that of truth and self-awakening. Nevertheless, the story is told in such a way as to be especially amusing, an added bonus to its honest insight and relevance. I commented those many months ago, with only several chapters read, that Snowflake Obsidian was, “[a]n absolutely entertaining read, and one I am confident will be going places.” Now, after reading the entire book, I believe in that statement all the more. There is no bigger statement for any space then color. Color shows personality, can enhance any decor scheme and complete the room. Pop’s of colors work well for feature walls but also can be used all over in large scale applications as long as its balanced and grounded with your accescories, fabrics etc... Color influences your homes appeal as well as your mood. Neutrals: Everyone has this in their house as there “ main “ color, however standard builders beige can be quite monetenus and drain your space of any interest. The trendiest neutral are those that are in the grey family. There are many different undertones in grey , blue grey, purple grey, brown grey so take this into consideration when choosing as you will see these tones more defined on a larger scale and can prohibit coordination when choosing an accent color. Natural light is always the best light to be choosing any color. Neutral colors are a great way of defining architecual features against wood finishes and dark color selections for your walls. Warm Tones: These are your reds, oranges, yellows. They can inflence feelings of: excitement, love, and also spur your appetite. Perfect for a busy kitchen with lots of conversation. Most definetly a high energy color. Does this mean that if you are wanting to create a relaxing environment to stay away from red? Absolutly not you may just want to have some hints of these colors. Cool Tones: These are your greens and blues. These influence feelings of relaxation, meditation and peace. If you want to turn your space into a calm retreat this is the way to go, however to avoid your room feeling cold adding hints of the warm colors will balance the effect. Jewel Tones: These are your Purples, Royal blues, Emerald Greens. Rich saturated colors that create a lux feeling especially when mixed with other jewel tones. These colors add definition to any room, loads of personality, prefect for any feature wall and distintive decor scheme. Last but not least, because everything does come back into style eventually is wallpaper!! Like fabrics there are some amazing new patterns, textures and color, not to be disregarded for previous - outdated- applications, this is a perfect way to add visual interest in your room. Enlarged traditional prints, bold geometrics, faux finishes, tone on tone for something more subtle. Wallpaper works to create a more transitional space ( mixing contemporary with traditional ) , as is also quite cost effect. Installation and take down has come leaps and bounds from the wallpapers of previous generations that take days to remove and sand. Mix colors, create features, show your personality. Everyone has a favorite color, express it in your home. Color is the number one element in decor, and is the first and foremost representation of your personal style and tastes.

Splitting pension income can save you thousands Spouses who receive certain types of retirement income can significantly increase their after-tax dollars by using Ottawa’s income-splitting rules. Under these rules, up to half of one spouse’s pension income can be reported on the other spouse’s tax return. Why would you want to shift half your taxable income to your spouse? Because two smaller incomes attract less tax than a single large income. Here’s an example.

Potential tax savings. Fred and Wilma each receive $6,203 of Old Age Security and $8,776 of Canada Pension Plan income. Fred also has a $50,000 pension from a former employer. If they each report their own income, Fred would pay tax of $14,686 on his income of $64,979. Wilma would pay tax of just $690 on her income of $14,979. Total tax paid by the family: $15,376.* By shifting $25,000 of Fred’s pension income to Wilma, they each report taxable income of $39,979, which incurs a tax bill of $6,755 for a total family tax bill of $13,510. Total savings: $1,866. What to split. Not all types of income qualify. Retirees under 65 can only split payments from a superannuation or pension plan. Those 65 or older can also split payments from Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIFs), annuities from RRSPs, and Deferred Profit Sharing Plan (DPSP) payments. We can help you with the calculations to determine what pension income splitting can do for you. It could make thousands of dollars of difference in your golden years. *Based on an Alberta taxpayer in 2010. Figures are for illustration only. Actual tax rates will vary. THE MUD PUDDLE
Mud puddles are so much fun to play in. But be careful you don’t get stuck. You can sit yourself down and wiggle around, Soon you’ll be covered in muck. You can squish it and gish it Through your fingers and your toes. You can throw it at each other, And stick it on your nose. You can roll in it like piggy’s do, Step in it and lose your shoe. Mud! Mud! Everywhere! It’s down my clothes and in my hair. There’s a lot more dirt on us than Nana’s ever seen. How, oh how will we ever get clean? I didn’t know mud puddles, Could be so much fun to play in. I want to come back to the farm next week, And do it all over again! TO: EMMETT, LIAM, SOPHEY & KIERA. YOU INSPIRE ME! BY: PATRICIA MULLIN

If you are male, tree branches will also grow at groin height. • You will lose the little toothpick in your Swiss Army knife as soon as you open the box. • Rain. • Enough dirt will get tracked into the tent on the first day out, that you can grow the food you need for the rest of the trip in rows between sleeping bags. • The sun sets three-and-a-half times faster than normal when you’re trying to set up camp. • Tents never come apart as easily when you’re leaving a site as when you’re trying to get them set up in the first place. • When planning to take time off of work/school for your camping trip, always add an extra week, because when you get home from your “vacation” you’ll be too tired to go back for a week after. • Your side of the tent is the side that leaks.
