Cool It’s cool to sleep. As a matter of fact, it helps to be cool to sleep – physically cool. To achieve and maintain sleep, your body temperature drops. Not quite to zombie level but definitely below your daytime level. At normal nighttime sleep patterns, your core body temperature will be at its lowest around 4 to 5 am. As we wake up in the morning it starts to rise (for most of us – some stay at zombie). Everyone has a slightly different body temperature and feeling ‘cool’ is a relative term. What may be arctic conditions to one person can be pleasantly refreshing to another. This can present some difficulties for couples trying to find a cool room temperature suitable to both of them. Upon setting up your pre-sleep routine, you are telling your brain it’s time to sleep. Your brain will then start to reduce your body temperature as a preparation for sleep. This is where a pleasantly cool bedroom will help. In Southern Alberta (including the Strathmore area), there are two factors that can actually help our sleep patterns. These are altitude and humidity. We have high altitude and low humidity – these help give us our quick cool off at night. Our famous nighttime temperature drops can give us a cooler room towards morning. A potential problem is that we go to bed in a warmer www.thenewsyneighbour.com
In Home or In Shop Service
room and may end up too cool for sleep later at night if we leave windows open. Something to bear in mind and there are solutions to this – noting that air conditioning reduces humidity even further. Another factor in body temperature is our mattress. Manufacturers are aware of certain materials that trap body heat and can make our bed uncomfortably warm. Mattress construction can help reduce excess heat buildup in some ways: - By using ticking (covers) that breathe and help wick way heat and moisture; - By layering support material (foams) that trap heat away from the top cover. Some of the new foams trap much less heat than the older styles. Some manufacturers are also utilizing ‘flow through’ ventilation which allows the mattress to breathe. As always, a mattress must provide a consistent level of support that allows us to achieve deeper and proper sleep cycles. If we cannot achieve a restful, rejuvenating sleep free of the need to toss and turn, the room temperature is not the biggest problem. Talk with your local independent mattress retailer. They know sleep and their product. They can advise on preparing for sleep and the best mattress that supports your sleep requirements. From the Publishers Can you believe it’s July already? We can’t. This is another EXCITING issue. Strathmore Rodeo will be less than a month away by the time this magazine hits houses. Heritage Days Rodeo is sanctioned by the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association and World Professional Chuckwagon Association, and it’s right in our own back yard!! Are you brave enough (or crazy enough) to run with the bulls? If not, you at least have to go watch. Along with the Strathmore Rodeo, the Rockyford Rodeo and Langdon Days make for 3 SUPER EXCITING local summer events, and details on all 3 can be found in this issue. Yee-Haw!! This is also our 5th Annual Pets lssue. We have some friendly reminders, some important information on how to protect your animals, and the usual tips and jokes that we always provide. If you have some family coming in from out of town to any of these events this summer, email them the link to our magazine so they can read it before they come. We have hotels, restaurants, salons, shopping, services and more for all of your out of town guests as well as for you! This issue, along with all our past issues, can be found on our website www.thenewsyneighbour. com. Also, in the aftermath of one of the largest natural disasters to ever hit Alberta, we want to extend our hearts, positive thoughts, and prayers to everyone affected by the floods. There are many Facebook pages and websites up, looking for aide to those who need it. If you want to help in any way, we believe the safest is to donate to the Red Cross at http://www.redcross.ca/ or text ABHELP to 4664 to instantly charge your phone bill. We are so grateful to live in a province and town that stepped up to help everyone who needed it – what a true testament to human nature! Have an amazing July! Summertime Is Sandwich Time. When it’s hot outside and you really don’t feel like cooking, do what my mother always did, make all us kid’s sandwiches. Nice fresh bread and a little sandwich spread (boy, I was easy to please way back then). I used to love that Kraft Sandwich Spread – I’m not even sure if you can buy it anymore and I don’t like eating preservatives. I have found a few really good homemade recipes, good stuff to smear on that nice fresh loaf of bread. Quickie Muffaletta Tapenade Roughly chopping all the components with a knife gives them a wonderful texture, but if you prefer to use a food processor, process ingredients separately until coarsely chopped (do not mash to a paste!) and mix together in a bowl. Easy prep: Chop 1 cup mixed pitted brine-cured olives and transfer to a bowl. Add 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon salt and freshly ground pepper over top of olives and stir to combine. Mix in 1/2 cup drained chopped roasted red peppers and 1/2 Page 12

cup chopped fresh parsley. Stir in a dash of oregano and, if you like your muffaletta pungent, one minced clove garlic. Have leftovers? Serve as an antipasto with toasted whole-wheat pita wedges. White Bean Pesto This gains its body from pureed white beans, not cheese or high-fat pine nuts, but it’s just as flavourful as the original. Try on turkey or chicken sandwiches, or spread on crusty bread to make crostini. It’s a delicious way to eat your healthy oil for the day! Easy prep: Toss into a food processor 1 cup canned drained white beans, 1 garlic clove (cut into a few pieces), 1 cup packed fresh basil leaves, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil and freshly ground black pepper. Process until smooth. Makes about 1 1/4 cups. Have leftovers? Even if you’ve shied away from whole-wheat pasta before, you’ll love how its nutty bite complements this creamy sauce. Toss some pesto with whole-wheat spaghetti cooked to al dente, stirring in some reserved pasta water to thin the sauce a bit. Serve with freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Roasted Garlic Spread Roasting brings out garlic cloves’ natural sweetness, making them an excellent partner for roast beef or cheese sandwiches. Easy prep: Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Remove the papery outer skin of a bulb of garlic, and with a parCUSTOMIZE YOUR WORK ing knife or kitchen scissors, trim the tips of each clove. Place whole bulb on a piece of foil and drizzle

Allow bulb to cool several minutes, then, using an oven mitt to protect your hands, turn bulb over and squeeze the softened cloves from bulb into a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Have leftovers? Stir cloves in with boiled potatoes and mash them together for extra flavour without extra fat, or mash and stir into soup for extra body and flavour. Carrot-Ginger Spread A nod to the classic Japanese salad dressing, this spread is delicious with tuna salad or lean roast beef sandwiches. Easy prep: Toss into the bowl of a food processor 5 medium carrots (cut into large pieces), 1 small shallot, 2 pieces peeled fresh ginger (about 1 by 1 1/2 inches each), 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce, 2 tablespoons water, 1 tablespoon seasoned rice vinegar and 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Pulse to a paste. Have leftovers? It still makes salad greens irresistible. To convert www.thenewsyneighbour.com
to a dressing, whisk in an additional tablespoon oil, 2 tablespoons rice vinegar and 1 tablespoon soy sauce. Horseradish Mustard These two sandwich greats add a serious kick to any combination, and the “recipe” is simple as can be. Easy prep: Stir 1 tablespoon drained horseradish into 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard. Have leftovers? This tangy combo makes a great dressing for warm potato salad. Boil six quartered new potatoes until very tender; drain and place in a large bowl. Add 1 teaspoon white vinegar, 1 teaspoon olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt and freshly ground black pepper and toss to combine. Then stir in 2 teaspoons of horseradish mustard and a handful of chopped, fresh sugar snap peas. Serve warm. ENJOY!

For the first time ever, we will be hosting the Strathmore Stampede Rodeo Finals on Monday, August 5th. The top 10 Cowboys and Cowgirls in each event will return Monday to compete for the Championship title of the Strathmore Stampede. This change in format makes our Monday Rodeo a made for broadcast event and has been chosen by iLink to be filmed for a live webcast and TV. All Rodeo, Running with the Bulls and Chuckwagon performances will be live streamed into our NEW Beer Gardens on site, so you can enjoy a cool drink without missing any exciting action! This year’s General Grounds will house the community for the duration of the Stampede. Our EnCana Entertainment Stage Lineup for this year includes some old favourites and new faces! Sebastian Steel will be back to perform his infamous hypnotist routine, as well as local talent and recent MMVA Canada Top 3 covers contestant Kirstyn Johnson. Our newly reformatted Strathmore Stampede Talent Show will include local talent competing to advance to the live stage show, where one contestant will be eliminated each day by audience votes. With the return of the Midway, families will be buzzing with excitement as they line up to ride the 102 Foot Drop Tower, amongst 15 other great rides. How horses change a light bulb
* Thoroughbred: Who ME?? Do WHAT? I’m scared of light bulbs! I’m outta here! * Arabian: I changed it an hour ago. C’mon you guys - catch up! * Quarter Horse: Put all the bulbs in a pen and tell me which one you want. * Standardbred: Oh for Pete’s Sake, give me the darn bulb and let’s be done with it. * Shetland: Give it to me. I’ll kill it and we won’t have to worry about it anymore. * Friesian: I would, but I can’t see where I’m going from behind all this mane. * Belgian: Put the Shetland on my back, maybe he can reach it then. * Warmblood: Is the 2nd Level Instruction Packet in English? Doesn’t anyone realize that I was sold for $75K as a yearling, but only because my hocks are bad, otherwise I would be worth $100K? I am NOT changing light bulbs. Make the TB get back

We don’t need to change the light bulb; I ain’t scared of the dark. And someone make that darn Morgan stop jumping up and down before I double barrel him. * Haflinger: That thing I ate was a light bulb? * Mustang: Light bulb? Let’s go on a trail ride, instead. And camp. Out in the open like REAL horses. * Lipizzaner: Hah, amateurs. I will change the light bulb. Not only that, but I will do it while standing on my hind legs and balancing it on my nose, after which I will perform seven flying lead changes in a row and a capriole. Can you do that? Huh? Huh? Didn’t think so. * Miniature: I bet you think I can’t do it just cause I’m small. You know what that is? It’s sizeism! * Akhal Teke: I will only change it if it’s my owner’s light bulb and no one else has ever touched it. * Andalusian: I will delegate the changing of the light bulb to my personal groom after he finishes shampooing my mane and cleaning my saddle, but only on the condition that it is changed for a soft blue or green bulb, which reflects better off my coat while I exhibit my astonishing gaits. * Cleveland Bay: I’m busy. Make the whipper-in and the hounds do it. * Saddlebred: My ears are up already, please; please get the light bulb away from me! I’m ready to show, really, I promise I’ll win! * Paint: Put all the light bulbs in a pen, tell me

Fish Tales!
So kids are out of school and summer is finally here! July means the start of the CFL season, the start of free agency in the NHL and most importantly, July means it’s time kick up your boots, throw on your cowboy hat and enjoy the Calgary Stampede! As a 4th generation Calgarian, my 15 year old son is going to get a much different look at the 101st Stampede. Following in the footsteps of his mother and grandmother, my son has landed his very first summer job. As part of the 2013 park facility and service team, my son is proud to be a Stampede sweeper. He will be challenged with those glorious tasks of sweeping, cleaning, emptying garbage cans and occasionally picking up after a nervous animal. Boy, does that ever bring back memories! My worst summer job was given to me by my father when I was 13 years old. I needed some extra money and he needed the barn cleaned on our farm in Pouce Coupe, BC. Cleaning up after 50 head of registered polled Hereford was a smelly and life changing experience. I realized very quickly I wasn’t cut out to be a farmer. Driving the tractor and bailing hay was okay but that smell of manure is still with me 37 years later. The next summer I left the farm and headed to the coast where I landed a job as a dock boy at a salmon fishing resort in Stuart Island, BC. It wasn’t a glamorous job pumping gas and cleaning fish but the air was clean and it opened the door, giving me the experience I needed, for maybe the best summer job ever! At the ripe young age of 15, a kid from the interior of British Columbia had landed a gig as a salmon fishing guide. You should have seen the looks from some high paying business executives when I greeted them at the float plane. The only time it really became an issue was when the fishing was slow. Fortunately, that didn’t happen very often. The pay was great, the tips were awesome and there is something magical about hooking a Tyee (a trophy fish over 30 pounds) and fighting that spring in the tidal waters for almost an hour. It was dangerous as a whirlpool could suck your boat down and I did get a barbed fish hook stuck through my finger. The memories, however, are priceless. One of my favourite stories is when we foul hooked a 22 pound spring and fought this fish for over 2 and a half hours. I was so convinced I was going into the Guinness Book of World Records for catching the biggest salmon ever! Only to be so disappointed when this minnow finally emerged with Page 18
The Newsy Neighbour
the hook lodged just below its gill. The biggest salmon I did land was 43 pounds and it only took 10 minutes to get into the boat. I remember these two young Americans who came to the resort every summer with their parents. They didn’t think they needed a guide anymore so out they went one evening on their own. Just as darkness was falling, they got a strike and apparently they had a fish on. Hours later they are still in a battle of their lives fighting what they think is the biggest salmon ever! I will never forget the story they told us on the dock when they finally got in with no fish in the boat. In pitch darkness and complete silence, after battling this monster for over 2 hours, thinking this fish is finally starting to lose its will for survival. They listen and hear heavy breathing. One brother turns to the other and says “do salmon breathe?” Apparently they had been battling a seal for most of the night. I had the pleasure to guide Ernest and Julio Gallo, the famous wine making brothers from California. At the time, I had no idea who they were, I wasn’t old enough to drink and I didn’t even like wine. I must have done okay because when they returned to the resort the next season, they requested me back as their guide. They brought their wives that second year and the ladies were not impressed with the chef or the rustic resort. They kicked the chef out of the kitchen and treated me and their husbands to a beautiful Italian feast. The wine was fantastic and the Gallo’s never returned. The funniest question I ever received was from a nice American lady. She was so impressed with the scenery, the bald eagles, the tidal rapids and whirlpools that we fished in. “What is the elevation here” she asked me? Trying not to laugh I replied “Miss, this is the Pacific Ocean.” So many great memories from summers gone by. I hope you and your family have a fabulous summer? If you are planning take in the Calgary Stampede, be nice to the sweepers, as that could be my son!

call it a night and just got in his car to go home.
A story with a moral While they were taking up the collection in church one Sunday, John leaned forward and said, “Hey, Marie, how about you and me go to dinner next Friday?” “Why yes, John, that would be nice,” said Marie. Well, John couldn’t believe his luck. All week long he polished up his car, and on Friday he picked up Marie and took her to dinner; the finest restaurant in town. When they sat down, John looked over at Marie said, “Hey, Marie, would you like a cocktail before dinner?” “Oh, no thank you, John. What would I tell my Sunday School class?” said Marie. Well, John was set back a bit, so he didn’t say much until after dinner. After dinner he reached in his pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. “Hey, Marie,” said John, “Would you like a smoke?” “Oh, no, John,” said Marie, “What would I tell my Sunday School class?” Well, John was feeling pretty low after that, so he figured he would
While driving Marie home they passed the Holiday Inn. He’d struck out twice already, so he figured he had nothing to lose. “Hey, Marie,” said John, “how would you like to stop at this motel with me?” “Sure, John, that would be nice,” said Marie. Well, John couldn’t believe his luck. He did a U-turn right then and there, across the median, and drove back to the motel and checked in with Marie. The next morning John got up first. He looked at Marie lying there in the bed. “What have I done? What have I done?” thought John. He shook Marie and she woke up. “Marie, I’ve got to ask you one thing,” said John. “What are you going to tell your Sunday School class?” Marie said, “The same thing I always tell them... you don’t have to smoke and drink to have a good time!”

Blonde on Horseback A blonde from California decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no lessons or prior experience. She mounts the horse unassisted and the horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady and rhythmic pace, but the blonde begins to slip from the saddle. In terror, she grabs for the horse’s mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. She tries to throw her arms around the horse’s neck, but she slides down the side of the horse anyway. The horse gallops along, seemingly oblivious to its slipping rider. Finally, giving up her frail grip, she leaps away from the horse to try and throw herself to safety. Unfortunately, her foot has become entangled in the stirrup; she is now at the mercy of the horse’s pounding hooves as her head is struck against the ground over and over. As her head is battered against the ground, she is mere moments away from unconsciousness when to her great fortune... the Supermarket manager sees her and shuts the merry-go-round off. Page 20

With summer comes the warm weather and the bugs. This time of year, vet clinics have lots of furry patients coming in for “lump removals that are really ticks tightly attached to the pet. Ticks climb long grass and other foliage and wait for animals or people to walk by so they can attach. They can be more than just unpleasant looking – the most common ticks in Western Canada are also potential carriers of the bacteria that cause Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. People, as well as dogs, can become infected if bit by a tick carrying the bacteria. Signs include fever, swelling of arms, legs, and face, and difficulty breathing. Lyme disease is another serious disease transmitted by ticks that can affect both people and dogs. Right now the type of tick that carries the disease mainly lives in Eastern Canada, but it’s starting to move west. Veterinarians can send ticks in to a government surveillance program where the tick species is determined. If the ticks are the type that can carry Lyme disease they are tested for the disease. Lyme disease can cause fever, arthritis, kidney disease, and sometimes even heart problems or neurologic problems in both people and dogs. To help prevent your pet from getting bit treat him with a tick medication, such as Advantix, before going camping or in areas with long grass – and you should wear long sleeves! Another question we commonly get is how to protect pets against mosquitoes. A product called Defend, which is available at most vet clinics, protects pets for 30 days against mosquitoes. An option for short term protection is to wipe Skin-so-soft bug spray on your pet with a cloth.

From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a horse”, or,” that’s a lot of money for just a horse”. They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a horse”. Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a horse”. Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a horse”, but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a horse”, and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a horse” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

Two Horses And A Bell Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each looks like every other horse. But if you stop your car, or are walking by, you will notice something quite amazing. Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him. This alone is amazing. If nearby and listening, you will hear the sound of a bell. Looking around for the source of the sound, you will see that it comes from the smaller horse in the field. Attached to her halter is a small bell. It lets her blind friend know where she is, so he can follow her.
If you, too, think it’s “just a horse”, then you will probably understand phrases like “just a friend”, “just a sunrise”, or “just a promise”. “Just a horse” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust and pure unbridled joy. “Just a horse” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of “just a horse” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly into the future. So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a horse” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dream of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a horse” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a horse” but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a woman”. So the next time you hear the phrase “just a horse”, just smile, because they “just” don’t understand.
As you stand and watch these two friends, you’ll see how she is always checking on him, and that he will listen for her bell and then slowly walk to where she is, trusting that she will not lead him astray. When she returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, she stops occasionally and a look back, making sure her friend isn’t too far behind to hear the bell.
I don’t judge others. I don’t hate. I don’t discriminate. I don’t care about money. I don’t hold grudges. I DO know how to love unconditionally and that’s all I want in return. I wait for you every day. I am your fur-ever friend!
Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need.
Quality Canine Center
Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives. Other times we are the guide horse, helping others see. Good friends are like this; you don’t always see them, but you know they are always there. Please listen for my bell and I’ll listen for yours. “Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle”. Page 22

Colic In Horses Colic can be a very scary condition for horse owners, and much of that fear comes from the unknown. The reason that there is so much unknown about colic in horses is because it encompasses so many different medical conditions in the horse. Colic is a medical term abdominal pain, that discomfort can come from anywhere along the gastro-intestinal tract as well as pain from elsewhere in the horses body that is masquerading as abdominal pain. Therefore, there are literally hundreds of disease conditions in the horse that can result in colic. The signs of colic can be as different as the causes; these signs can include, but are not limited to, depression/lethargy, stretching out, repeated looking at the flank, teeth grinding, repeated pawing at the ground, kicking at the abdomen, repeated and violent rolling, throwing themselves on the ground, or an inability or unwillingness to get up. If you notice any of the above signs of colic in your horse, or if your horse is acting strange in any way, it is important to contact your veterinarian immediately. It is important not to “wait and see” prior to contacting your vet because in many cases of colic as well as other serious medical conditions, the sooner treatment is initiated the better the outcomes will be. When you initially contact your vet, you should tell them exactly what behaviours your horse is exhibiting and, if you can, tell them what your horse’s heart rate, capillary refill time and mucus membranes are like. These are simple parameters that will help to tell your veterinarian determine the level of pain that your horse is in, as well as a basic indication of the cardiovascular status of your horse. The next time your vet is out for a routine visit ask them to show you how to take these measurements as well as what normal looks like. It is also important not to administer any drugs like www.thenewsyneighbour.com
The vast majority of colic cases will get better on their own without any medical treatment. The bulk of cases after those that get better on their own will respond to simple medical therapy, such as intravenous pain medications, and sedatives as well as naso-gastric intubation and administration of mineral oil, electrolytes and anti-gaz. It is the slim minority of colic cases that will require abdominal surgery or unfortunately can be fatal. Colic surgery is not something that can be done in the field; it needs to be performed in the controlled setting of an equine referral hospital. Only your veterinarian will be able to tell you what the best treatment plan for your horse would be, so again, if you notice any of the above signs of colic in your horse the best thing to do is to immediately contact your veterinarian. Ways To Distract A Toddler 1. Rice/bean bins. All you need is a bin, some rice or beans, and some scoops or cups. (I use an underthe-bed storage tub because I actually store mine under a bed, and because that way it’s long enough for multiple children to use at once.) These require close supervision for really young children.

2. Water bins/tables. These require a nice day and a deck... but are great. Fill up a tub with water and provide scoops, bowls, and a few fun trinkets (some that float and some that sink) and let kids play ‘til their heart’s content. 3. Pipe cleaners in containers. Cut several small holes in a yogurt or coffee container and ask the child to stick pipe cleaners into them. For added challenge, colour hole-reinforcers and ask the child to match the pipe cleaner colour to the hole reinforcer colour. 4. Soda bottle filled with glitter, oil, and water. Grab a two-litre and fill it with these ingredients for fun. Roll them, shake them and put them into containers. Remember to glue the cap on before you give this to your child! 5. Bathtub painting. Let a squirmy toddler paint in the bathtub with tempra or other washable paint, or even coloured pudding. Just strip them down and let them KIDS

Give your child a paper bag with a colour scribbled on the front, or a coloured bag, and ask them to run around the house until they find items of that colour to put in the bag. 7. Bottles and cap matching. Take a bunch of used bottles (washed, of course) and let children match the caps to the bottles. Added bonus? This is a selfcorrecting activity, so when they get to the end and all the caps don’t match, they know they’ve made a mistake and can go back to find it.

(Please note: use your best judgement when using balloons around young children as popped balloons pose a serious choking hazard.) 10. Chalk. It’s versatile - if you have a chalkboard, wonderful, but chalk can be used on black construction paper, on driveways and sidewalks if you’re outside, on rocks, on felt, etc.
8. Sorting. Coloured pasta, old keys, nuts and bolts. You name it, kids can sort it.

SUMMERTIME FUN July Family Page Kids love blowing bubbles. There’s something about the pretty rainbow colours and watching in awe as they float away with the anticipation of how long a bubble will last until it bursts. Blowing bubbles can and will keep your kids occupied outside for quite some time; it’s a fun way to spend a blistering hot summer afternoon. There are lots of other fun and easy indoor and outdoor projects you can do yourself to help keep your youngsters busy this summer. Make Your Own Bubbles You need 1 litre of hot water, ½ cup of good quality dishwashing liquid, 2 – 4 tablespoons of glycerin (it makes the bubbles thick and last longer). You can find glycerin in the baking section of your supermarket. Glycerin is also great for adding to play dough. Mix all your ingredients together, trying not to make bubbles as you do – as gently as possible. Leave overnight (actually, the longer you leave it the better; 1 – 2 days is perfect).
Another fun idea… Frozen Paint Art – cool fun on a hot day! This really is a fun and easy project that is suited for many age levels. Pour tempra paint into an ice cube tray (buy this at the dollar store). It comes in lots of different rainbow colours. Put it in the freezer for about 20 minutes and let it begin to harden, and then add the popsicle sticks (so they remain firmly upright) and let the paint freeze overnight. The next day, you have frozen paint. The kids can paint outside on cardboard or poster paper; they will be creating for hours!
As a special treat, after all their hard work, make some Frozen Fruit Pops! In a blender, blend mixed berries and yogurt and freeze in small Dixie cups with popsicle sticks. YUM! These will be a real hit & a fresh, healthy treat for the kids.
Or, try this out… Kool-Aid Playdough 1 cup Flour (up to 2 if you feel it is thin) 1 cup boiling water 3 tbsp corn oil ½ cup salt 1 package Kool-Aid Mix each ingredient in with the flour. Add boiling water and mix thoroughly. Knead until very well mixed. Add more flour if necessary for texture to create a soft dough. Store in a Ziploc bag or Tupperware container.
This is super fun… Microwave Puff Paint 1 tbsp Self -raising flour Food colouring 1 tbsp Salt Cardboard (I used a cereal box) Q-Tips (or paint brushes) Combine the self-raising flour, salt and a few little drops of food colouring in a bowl. Add a little water to make a nice smooth paste. Create your masterpiece on a nice thick sheet of cardboard or poster paper. Microwave the design on high for 10 30 seconds until the paint puffs and it's all nice and dry.
“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” - Albert Einstein
Kids love this – it’s just like magic! Invisible Ink! (From The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions) 1 Tablespoon baking soda Water 4-6 drops of food colouring Paintbrush Paper Hair dryer (optional) First mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of water together. Next, take your paintbrush and start writing a secret message or draw a picture with the baking soda/water mixture. When finished, you'll have to wait until the message is completely dry before continuing to the next step. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the process. Get 1 tablespoon of water and mix it with 4-6 drops of food colouring. To reveal your secret message, paint the food colouring water mixture over your message. Your children will be amazed! This would be a fun activity for older children to write secret messages to each other, or even at a pirate-themed party with invisible treasure maps to decode. Use your imagination!!
We all know how important it is for you to spend quality time with your family. The way you treat your children has got to be the number one most important responsibility in life. Be kind, understanding and love them with every molecule of your being. Kathryn Hartwell
Luscious Joys The best thing about summer is, well, everything! Summer is amazing!! It’s a little short, but perhaps that is the reason we live in the northern hemisphere – so that we can cherish summer. I’m onto a few new beverages you may want to try; I tend to get bored with the same old iced cold beer (which I only drink in the summertime) and I’m sure many of you gasp in horror to hear those words. But, hey, why not add a little spice to your life and your beer?! These drinks will prove that mixing beer is a good idea!
Black Velvet
One part Guinness (or beer of your choice), one part sparkling wine, all parts awesome.
Sidewalker
Whooo, the name says it all! I have to try this once this summer! 1 1/4 cups applejack 1 1/4 cups fresh lemon juice 3/4 cup pure maple syrup 6 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 4 cups chilled preferably german beer 3/4 cup chilled club soda 8 lemon wedges Combine all ingredients in pitcher. Serve in chilled glasses with a wedge of lemon.
Snakebite
1/2 a pint of beer. Brits like to use lager; in Canada we seem to use Guinness more. I guess we think it’s more “authentic.” 1/2 a pint of hard cider, such as Woodchuck or Strongbow. Pour into the same glass. If you want to get really fancy, use the back-ofthe-spoon method. Turn a spoon upside-down over the beer and gently pour the cider over the back of the spoon. This allows the cider to pour down the edge of the glass and rest on top of the beer in a pousse-cafe layering.
Diesel
Same as Snakebite but you add a dash of blackcurrant syrup, which makes this dangerously drinkable and purple in colour. Page 32

Spicy Michelada
2 cups light Mexican beer 2 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp hot sauce (preferably a more vinegar based hot sauce such as Tabasco) 1 tsp low sodium soy sauce 1/2 jalapeno, seeded and diced (optional) freshly cracked black pepper Fill a large shaker partially with ice followed by the ingredients, except for the jalapeno. Close and shake until well mixed. Finish with lime wedges, black pepper and jalapeños (if using). Makes Two.
Lemon Shandie
1/2 cup sugar 3/4 cup fresh lemon juice (from about 4 lemons), plus wedges, for serving (optional) 8 mild pilsner beers (12 ounces each) Place eight 16-ounce glasses or mugs in the freezer. In a small saucepan, combine sugar and 3/4 cup water over medium heat. Cook, stirring, until sugar dissolves, about 1 minute. Refrigerate until cool, at least 10 minutes and up to 1 week. In a 2-cup liquid measure or small pitcher, combine sugar mixture and lemon juice. Pour 1 beer into each chilled glass; add about 1/4 cup lemon mixture and, if desired, a lemon wedge. Serve immediately.

• Think vegetables at breakfast! Make a black bean and scrambled egg wraps and spice it up with fresh tomato salsa. • Toss an avocado in your smoothie. Its mild flavour and creamy texture blend in nicely and it will add a dose of healthy fats. • Add finely grated carrots or zucchini to pasta sauce, meat loaf, chili, or a stew is one way to get an extra serving of vegetables. • If the natural flavour of carrots, celery, broccoli, or other veggies isn’t enough, try dipping them into hummus or another bean spread, some spiced yogurt, or even a bit of ranch dressing. Or slather peanut butter on a banana or slices of apple. • Having a 6-ounce glass of low-sodium vegetable juice gives you a full serving of vegetables. • Roasting vegetables is easy and brings out new flavours. Cut up onions, carrots, zucchini, asparagus, turnips and coat with olive oil, add a dash of balsamic vinegar, and roast at 350° until done. Use roasted or grilled veggies as a side dish, put them on sandwiches, or add them to salads. •Try dipping your fruit in chocolate. In addition to a delectable dessert, you get plenty of heart-healthy antioxidants, some fiber, and a host of vitamins, minerals, and other phytonutrients. Remember, eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables is the cornerstone of good health. It helps control blood pressure and cholesterol, keeps arteries flexible, protects bones, and is good for the eyes, brain, digestive system, and just about every other part of the body. Hiking, biking, swimming, or just throwing a Frisbee with your best friend can be fun and exhilarating; but these activities can also causes your muscles to overwork. Some of the best ways to prevent injuries from any kind of summer workout is though self-massage, massage, and incorporating warm up and cool down stretches into your exercise routine. Fancy Ice Cubes
Did you know UV tanning at a professional salon
Cucumber-Basil
Jazz up club soda or seltzer (or a vodka or gin and tonic) with cucumber/basil ice cubes. This refreshing cube will add a small refreshing hint of cucumber and basil to your drink. Peel and dice one large cucumber. Makes sure the entire peel has been removed so the cucumber’s essence permeates the ice cube. Dice two or three sprigs of fresh basil (never use dried basil) and make sure you finely chop the basil. Combine the cucumber and basil in a bowl. Mix well as you will want to get an equal amount of basil and cucumber in each ice cube. Place ½ teaspoon of the mixture in each ice cube tray. Add water and freeze overnight or under completely frozen.
YEAR ROUND is smart for so many reasons ... Reason # 18: No tan lines ... just natural all-over colour.
Reason # 25: The sun is always shining regardless of what mother nature sends.
Rosemary-Fig
Surprise guests with a fig and rosemary infused ice cube. This type of cube works well with hot apple cider, ginger beer or bourbon. Dice and quarter fresh figs, leaving skin in tact. To fill a full ice cube tray, you’ll need approximately three to four medium sized fresh figs. Remove sprigs of rosemary from its stem until you can fill ¼ of a cup. Make sure you opt for fresh rosemary instead of dried to get the full flavour. Combine figs and rosemary and place ½ teaspoon of the mixture into ice cube tray. Add water and freeze.

Use a sharp paring knife to carefully cut the skin away from the lime. Also remove any remaining seeds. Dice ½ cup of fresh mint. Finely dice mint so that you have small slivers - the smaller the better. Even if your nutrition is perfectly balanced, you will still experience some form of malnourishment in the form of nutrient deficiencies. The soil our food is grown in has been depleted in nutrients due to use of fertilizers. Environmental pollutants affect plants, animal and people. Long story short, if you have been dedicated to your weight loss journey by eating well, exercising, sleeping well and you are still not losing weight, it may be due to a deficiency. When the body is deficient in anything, it can affect its ability to shed excess pounds and function properly. A BioSignature practitioner can tell if you have possible hormone imbalances, food sensitivities or possible nutrient deficiencies. A BioSignature practitioner works with your doctor or functional medical practitioner. If you are ever unsure of your health or nutrient levels, your doctor or functional medical practitioner can discuss this with you and order certain tests to be certain. Your health is in your hands! What people don’t know is that even though obesity is affecting a large percentage of the population, malnutrition is what’s causing most of the western medical problems. If you are obese, you are most likely malnourished. This sounds counterintuitive, but think about it: you don’t ever hear about people going on binges of broccoli or lean chicken and you certainly don’t hear of obese people who have always eaten and only eat clean whole foods.

We would like to apologize for a mistake made in the June issue in the article “What should we eat?” It was brought to our attention that Recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring growth hormone somatotropin. Why is rBST not approved for use in Canada? rBST was reviewed by Health Canada in the 1990’s. Although it was determined that it did not pose a health risk to humans, there were animal health concerns, and therefore it was never approved for sale in Canada. A-Plus Developments comes Highly recommended by Local builders! A bricklayer working on a three-storytall chimney had set up a pulley system so that his helper could raise the bricks up to where he needed them. As he was working, his helper complained about how difficult it would be to get the last of the bricks up to the flat roof of the building. Just then, another contractor had some material delivered and it was placed on the roof by a fork lift brought to unload it. The bricklayer asked if the driver would load the rest of the bricks up there as well and the driver agreed. The bricklayer realized that he would not need his helper anymore and sent him home. When the bricklayer completed the chimney, he noticed that he had quite a few bricks left over and that the fork lift was no longer at the jobsite. Now he had to figure out how to get the leftover bricks back down by himself. If he dropped them, they would surely www.thenewsyneighbour.com

break. So he decided to use the pulley he had set up earlier to lower them down. First he went down to the ground and raised a large metal bucket up to the roof level using the rope and pulley. Next, he tied the rope off onto a railing and climbed back up to the roof and loaded the bricks into the bucket. Then he went back down to the ground. He knew that the bricks would be heavy, so he wrapped the rope around his hand a couple of times and then untied the end of the rope with his other hand. Well, the bricks were heavier than he imagined and with physics being as it is, he was immediately launched upwards at a high rate of speed.
into the empty bucket. He then tilted enough to fall out of the bucket and continued with his gravity experiment. Eventually he landed on top of the pile of bricks, collapsed in pain, and was glad to be alive. He let go off the rope and cried out for help. It was then that the bucket hit him in the head and fractured his skull.
As he was racing up towards the roof, he encountered the bucket full of bricks coming down at an equally fast rate. He collided with the bucket and broke his nose and his shoulder. The bucket passed him by as he sped upwards. He reached the pulley just before the bucket hit the ground and broke a few of his fingers as they were pulled into the pulley. When the bucket hit the ground, its bottom fell out and all of the bricks spilled onto the ground. Now the fun reversed. As the now light bucket sped upwards, the mason took a shot to the groin when one of his legs slipped www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Strathmore Single Family Market MLS Information for May 2013. Strathmore Single Family homes experienced a slight slow down in May sales which is not typical. May is typically one of the highest volume sales months of the year. However the average sale price did increase about 4.5% to $311,050 and the sales to listings ratio did increase to 57.86%. We are experiencing about 30% less inventory than this time last year which will tighten the market and will cause buyers to pay closer to the list price. The days on market have gone up slightly in May which shows a slight decrease in buyers. It will be interesting to see how June ends up as interest rates are predicted to rise and will play a major factor if they increase to much. For more information on the this article and the market please contact Carey Rose RE/MAX Realty Horizon. See back page.

Life Lines This monthly column by Jody Brown, is designed to help you make better connections and live happier lives. Sometimes we just need to ask the question. Joanne (Jody) Brown, BSW is an NLP Master Practitioner and advanced Master Hypnotherapist with a Diploma in corrections and Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. You can learn more about NLP and hypnosis techniques on her website at www. authenticbeing.ca or contact her at 403-983-2230 or authenticbeing@shaw.ca.
Worrying Last month we received a question about worrying, so this month we’ve created a list of some coping strategies and activities in no particular order that might help you cope or avoid those anxious times we all have in our lives. 1. Educate yourself. Just what is the issue you are dealing with? Typically, the imagination can run wild and create a lot more stress than what the real situation calls for. 2. Get the facts. Someone is not talking to you and you think they are avoiding you? Ask them what’s up. You might be surprised to find out that it has absolutely nothing to do with you. Or, this gives you an opportunity to clear up any misunderstanding they might have. 3. Discover all of your options. Test results from the doctor not ideal? Don’t guess about things, seek a second opinion and find knowledgeable people who have been through the situation and find out all of your options. 4. Connect with others. It’s easy to push people away and isolate when we have worries, but that might only make the worry larger. 5. Get active. Have an upcoming job interview? Run, bike, skate, rollerblade, do yoga, walk, do tai chi, do an exercise video, or play a team sport you always dreamed of. The mind will appreciate you getting your body active. 6. Help Others. We tend to think that we are the only ones with problems, but none of us have a corner on the market when it comes to the issue of problems and worry. There are lots of problems floating around. Find people that can use your skills, talent, strength, experience, humour and time and find out the struggles others around you are facing. It might surprise you. 7. Talk talk talk. Can’t believe you lost the job? Vent to others. It might not be a great idea to do this in the grocery store lineup, but you never know what gem of knowledge the person buying the Pepto-Bismol might offer you. 8. Set a Limit. Wondering about that squirrel that ran under your tire? Allow yourself time to dwell on the worry in a big way but set a time limit. Focus your energy and thoughts for a specific period of time, but after that time has passed, allow yourself to get busy with www.thenewsyneighbour.com
other matters in your life that need you in the here and now 9. Question Your Worry Thoughts. I can’t believe this is happening to me! Why not? It has happened to others, why not me? It is not the end of the world. I got through this the last time ok. What did I do to cope last time? Challenge your thoughts instead of acting like they speak the truth – they are impish and like to exaggerate. 10. Forgive Yourself. We all make mistakes - we are imperfect and mistakes are bound to happen. Many times these mistakes lead to the greatest learnings in life. We can’t change the past through worry, but we can make plans for a better future. We would love to hear about how you cope with stress and anxiety. Let us know what you do to help relieve yourself of pesky worry and you might help many others to live a happier life in the process. Enjoy the summer! Lifelines “When negative conditions pop up for whatever reason (as they always will because we require the contrast), instead of talking about how tough things are, dig down and feel your power. You’re not only connected to the force of wellbeing, you are that force. That force is Life. That force is passion. And passion is creation.” Lynn Grabhorn from her New York Times bestseller, Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting.
Q. An emergency vehicle travels 10 miles at a speed of 50 miles per hour. How fast must the vehicle travel on the return trip if the round-trip travel time is to be 20 minutes? Q. Decapitate me and all becomes equal. Then truncate me and I become second. Cut me front and back and I become two less than I started. What word am I? Q. The WWE tournament was about to begin where each participant would compete against every other participant. At the last moment, some new participants appeared and asked that they be allowed to fight in the competition. Because of them 26 more competitors had to be scheduled. How many new participants were there?

A. 75 mph. The emergency vehicle travels 10 miles in 12 minutes (50/60 = 10/12) that leaves 8 minutes for the return trip (20-12=8) Therefore the emergency vehicle must travel 75mph on the return trip (75/60 = 10/8) A. Seven (equal) eve (2nd person according to the bible) v (Roman numeral 5; 2 less than 7) A. Four. The only way you can have exactly 26 new competitions added, is to have 4 new people in a 5 person game (4x5 = 20 competitions for each new person with each old person plus 3+2+1=6 competitions between new people) The Newsy Neighbour

The A to Z Healing Power of Aloe Vera ‘All that mankind needs for health and healing is provided in nature… the challenge of science is to find it!’ - Paracelsus Man has used Aloe Vera for over 5000 years. Egyptians first wrote of the healing powers of the plant on their ancient papyrus texts calling it the plant of immortality. Aloe Vera extracts have antibacterial and anti-fungal activities. It is also effective in the treatment of wounds. It is non-toxic, with no side effects, provided the aloin has been removed by processing. It has even been used as a fish tank water conditioner. Commercially, it is used as an ingredient in lotion, yogurt, beverages and some desserts. It has also been used for such products as makeup, tissues, moisturizers, soaps, sunscreens, incense, razors and even shampoos. Research has revealed the tremendous healing powers of aloe when used both internally and externally. And from A to Z here is an extensive list of the wonderful properties of this amazing plant. It can relieve the following: • abscesses • abrasions • acne • allergies • anemia • arterial insufficiency • arthritis • athlete’s foot • asthma • bad breath • baldness • blisters • bed sores • bladder infections • blood pressure • bruises • bronchitis • burns • bursitis • bunions • bed wetting • boils • bone fractures • candida • canker sores • cancer • carbuncles • cataracts • cramps • chilblains • chemotherapy side effects • chapped skin and lips • coughs • colds and cold sores
• colic • constipation • cystitis • conjunctivitis • colon cleanser • complexion enhancer • chicken pox sores • lowers serum cholesterol • convulsions • chronic fatigue syndrome • diabetes • dandruff • dysentery • depression • dry skin • dermatitis • denture sores • frost bite • fluid retention • gastrointestinal problems • genital herpes • gangrene • gingivitis • glaucoma • gynecological diseases • gall ailments • heat rash • headaches • hemorrhoids • heart burn • high blood pressure • hang-overs • hives • heat exhaustion
• insomnia • ingrown toenails • indigestion • insect bites • inflamed joints • jaundice • kidney infections • laryngitis • liver ailments • leukemia • lacerations • multiple sclerosis • mouth ulcers • moles • migraines • menstrual pain • nausea • nervous stress • nappy rash • obesity • psoriasis • prostatitis • pancreas problems • pimples • problems caused by protozoa(ringworm, fungi) • prickly heat • periodontal disease • radiation burns • rashes • scar tissue
• skin lesions • stings • sties • sprains • sores • scalds • stretch marks • shingles • staph infections • sunburn • sore throat • stomach ulcers • sports injuries • sinus • sun spots • spurs • tonsillitis • tendinitis • trachoma • tuberculosis • tiredness • tropical ear • ulcers • vaginitis • venereal sores • varicose veins • worms • warts • wounds • x-ray burns • yeast infection
External Use: Apply the gel from the leaf immediately for burns and scalds, insect bites, nettle stings, chili burns, pain in general and for quick healing. A fresh leaf can be cut open with a knife and the gel applied to the skin. When wiping the aloe leaf directly on the skin, all the sap can appear to have been used up, but if you take a knife and score the inside surface of the leaf with a few cuts, more juice will be released. Internal Use: If you wish to use Aloe Vera as a tonic, it can be taken regularly. Cut one or two large leaves from the base of the plant, and allow to stand half an hour to allow the sap to drain. To make an infusion from the leaves, cut them into two centimeter chunks and place the pieces into half litre-sized containers and fill them about one third. Top up the containers with cold water and place them in your refrigerator. Leave for eight hours. Pour half into one glass and drink first thing in the morning and also the same before each meal. After draining the infusion, refill the jar with water. By having several jars you will be able to maintain a constant process of filling and refilling. Aloe Vera – certainly an amazing plant with an amazing healing power – both internally and externally. There is GREAT need for a sarcasm font. I totally take back all those times I didn’t nap when I was younger.
There’s no worse feeling than that millisecond you’re sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.
I would rather try to carry 10 overloaded plastic bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring the groceries in.
I went out for a run but came back after two minutes because I forgot something. I forgot I’m out of shape and can’t run more than two minutes.
I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!
