CRAZY VOLUNTEER PROJECT OF THE MONTH
The Volunteers Who Endure Mosquito Bites to Help Find a
Malaria Vaccine Jesse Bolton is a pretty buff guy. He’s in the Navy, and a few mosquitoes don’t scare him much. But he has seen what the bite of a malaria-carrying insect can do. Even so, as part of a scientific experiment, Bolton allowed himself to be bitten by a pretty buff mosquito.
For the past 17 years, Walter Reed’s “human challenge model,” in which volunteers get bitten by malaria-carrying mosquitoes, has been a critical tool in the global war against malaria. Some trials have tested medicines to treat patients, while others test vaccines to prevent people from getting the disease. Bolton’s was aimed simply at showing that researchers could infect people with Plasmodium vivax, one of the five strains of the malaria parasite. Malaria, which causes a cycle of severe chills and fever, is a stubborn killer that is responsible for the deaths of nearly one million people each year, most of them babies in sub-Saharan Africa.
“These mosquitoes were huge,” said Bolton, 27, a medical technician at the National NavalMedical Center in Bethesda. Ten days after the bite, he was sweaty, tired, and registering a 102-degree fever; signs that a malaria parasite was doing a number on his bloodstream. Bolton was one of a dozen volunteers being monitored by doctors and nurses from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Each time blood was drawn, the volunteers got a crisp $100 bill; once any of them exhibited symptoms, they were quickly treated with malaria medication. They will be monitored for the next six months to be sure that the disease doesn’t recur.

We are at 80 pages for the second month in a row! The universe it watching over us, or maybe it’s all the incredible supporters we have, which was made VERY evident at the “Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival” that we organized on June 20th in downtown Strathmore. If you were not at this event, you might have missed one of the best Festivals this Summer – not that we can compete with the BIG GUYS like “The Strathmore Heritage Days and Rodeo” and “The Canadian Rockies International Rodeo and Music Festival”, but for our first kick at the cat “The Newsy Neighbour Get To Know Your Neighbour Festival” was epic and yes we are doing it again next year!!

The Newsy Neighbour raised $760 for the Strathmore Municipal Library. We had people vote online the past 3 months for the charity they wanted to see get the money. The Strathmore municipal Library won by a hair with 5 for Life immediately next in line. The Newsy Neighbour also raised 95lbs and $20 cash for the Wheatland Food Bank by asking people to bring a food donation when they came to the festival. $1150 was raised by BDS Properties for Step One Housing by selling burgers and a beverage for $3. The realtors at Aztec Realty volunteered to cook and serve the burgers, and the BBQ was donated free of charge by ATCO gas. $355 was raised by The King Edward Pub for the Women’s Emergency Shelter by selling beef on a bun. $934.25 was raised at the poker run and Strathmore Pawn for Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, for selling ballots to enter to win Miranda Lambert tickets. The winner of the Miranda Lambert tickets is Kristin Harriman $254 was raised by Value Drug Mart for the Loftus Hope Fund with their “Big Splash” event. The grand total of money raised the weekend of June 20th was $2933.25. This is fantastic and the goal will be to double it next year. Back to this issue of the magazine though…There are so many incredible articles within these pages you will be passing this one along to your friends, family and neighbour! The plethora of diversity is almost mind blowing I assure you there is something for everyone!

The move to Langdon wasn’t completely abandoning my roots, as my grandmother taught school in Langdon in about 1928-ish. The “ish” is due to not completely paying attention to her stories as a kid and there’s a moral in that – KIDS!!! Pay attention to your grandparents’ stories!!! They become relevant over time!! In really odd ways sometimes, but still – PAY ATTENTION!!! Eventually you’ll lose the chance.
Stories, Musings, A Little Adventure And Humour
I
Suzanne is a native Calgarian that lived in Langdon for 15 years before transplanting to Chestermere in 2013. By day she is an accountant with a frustrated creative side that occasionally escapes in form of written musings, which is far more interesting than adding stuff up for people.
was born and raised in Calgary, have parents who were also born and raised there (okay, my dad spent a few years in Moose Jaw, as a kid, but we don’t speak of that), plus a maternal grandmother who also grew up in Calgary. My kids were born in Calgary and my dad still lives in Calgary after a ten year hiatus in the US. My mom dared to live in Edmonton for a few years but has since seen the error of her ways and retuned south to almost Calgary (aka Cochrane). In other words – I’m a city girl and that city is Calgary. Love it or hate it – Calgary is home, always has been and, I thought, always will be. Until a fateful day in 1998, when my family migrated to Langdon, followed by a move to Chestermere in 2013. 12 •
thenewsyneighbour.com
But I digress. The point to all of this is, besides the fact that I kick butt in conversations with “remember when” and “Calgary” as the topics, had you suggested to my young adult self that not only would I one day move from the city, but I would LIKE it, I would have laughed at you. I am not a small town kind of person. Not. At. All. I would forever be an urban dweller and it better be an urban place of reasonable size. Yet for the last 17 years I’ve happily found myself to be a non-city dweller; to be a dweller of a hamlet, followed by the dweller of a town. The newfound city dwelling, compliments of Chestermere’s advancement into the land of cityhood, really doesn’t count as a city wants to have a least 100,000 people in it to count as urban. Maybe even 200,000. Sorry Chesty, you’re still just a town to me. One of the things that changed my mind about the concept of “urban” versus “rural” and my living in the latter is the concept of community. Sure the big cities talk about having a “sense of community” and “community spirit” but now having lived in hamlet/ small town/wannabe city, I call BS. There’s a very undefinable, but borderline tangible feeling in a small community that can’t be replicated in a big city. It is things like have a phone number that ends in 3609 and knowing who has 3607, 3608, 3610 and 3611. And being able to direct a caller from Vancouver, who has called your number in error, what number they really want because the person they’re looking for lives across the street. It’s little things like fireworks displays that rival the Stampede but you don’t have to drive 20 minutes to find a decent viewing place and battle traffic to park once you get there. And it’s summer festivals, music festivals and rodeos aplenty. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

June saw the 1st annual “Get to Know Your Neighbour” festival in Strathmore. Do cities close off their downtown to have a wee party so you can wander about? Okay, maybe a couple of streets here and there, but the odds of running into a ton of people you know at the same time aren’t so high. Langdon has Langdon Days, which I’d say more about but… what happens there stays there. Let’s just say the beer gardens are worth the price of admission for more than just the bands. Chestermere takes full advantage of its lake with the Water Festival AND by putting on a crazy number of fireworks displays throughout the year to celebrate just about anything. Chesty loves a good fireworks show!! (Langdon Days gives them a run for the money once a year, though). You just cannot replicate the fun, goofy, crazy times that go with a small town “Anything Days/Festival” celebrations and, unlike the Stampede, you don’t have to be independently wealthy to afford to partake (ignoring the beer gardens, anyhow). The other aspect of community that was once again made evident this June is how we pull together when things go bad. I can’t count the amount of times all of the small communities in our area have pulled together when there’s been a devastating fire, a serious illness, or crazy weather. Whatever the cause – when things go bad, we pull together. Sadly, the most recent illustration was the loss of Jaydon Sommerfeld on June 10, 2015. In the wake of his accident, our community witnessed the mobilization of the Chestermere High School student community, as they came together to grieve and support each other. I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of young adults move so quickly to conjure up so many heartfelt events to support each other, along with Jaydon’s family and close friends, in the immediate aftermath. On top of this, the response from the community at large has been amazing and inspiring to say the least. But it’s what us rural folk do – pull together when things go wrong. All of this, good and bad, reminds me again why the city just doesn’t cut it. Because the city doesn’t do “community”. We do.

Many of these top ranked competitors and rodeo stock will also compete at both the Canadian and National Finals Rodeos as well as the Calgary Stampede.
BAREBACK RIDING
This event is the most physically demanding of all the rodeo events, a cowboy must ride a horse with no saddle for eight seconds. This is a judged event the cowboy with the highest score wins.
July 31, 2015 to August 3, 2015
BULL RIDING
THE HISTORY
Since 1966, Strathmore has conducted an annual fair and “Heritage Days” Rodeo on the long weekend in August. 1985 saw the Heritage Days Rodeo turn professional and become sanctioned by the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association. In conjunction to hosting Pro Rodeo that weekend, 1988 saw the addition of the World Professional Chuckwagon Association to our grounds. The 1990’s focused on a change of image to provide a family weekend by incorporating children’s entertainment, local entertainment stage, craft/bench show, livestock show, outdoor family entertainment show ring, machinery show, trade show, parade, midway and fireworks. The hosting of these events annually each August long weekend created a major tourist attraction to the Town of Strathmore and surrounding areas as indicated by its growing attendance. In 2003, we started our signature event, Running With the Bulls. Now called, the Strathmore Stampede, our event has become the largest community project hosted by the Agricultural Society and promoted by the 12,000 residents of Strathmore. This event encompasses a major part of the Ag Society’s planning time and has community support with over thirty (30) volunteer committee chairpersons and six hundred (600) volunteers.

The most dangerous of all the rodeo events. A rope with a handhold is wrapped around the bull and the cowboy can only hold on with one hand while trying to survive riding the bull for eight seconds. This is a judged event and the highest score wins.
BARREL RACING
This is the only woman’s event that we currently have at the Strathmore Stampede. In Barrel Racing, cowgirls navigate a course consisting of circling three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern. This is a timed event, so the fastest cowgirl to successfully complete the course wins.
SADDLE BRONC
Like Bareback and Bull Riding, this is another event where the cowboy must survive a ride for eight seconds without getting bucked off. This time the horse is saddled. This is a judged event, and the cowboy with the highest score wins.
STEER WRESTLING
The objective of this event is simple: wrestle a steer to the ground. Timing, speed, and control are all needed as the steer must be wrestled to the ground in the correct manner. This is a timed event, and the cowboy that can get it done correctly the fastest wins.
TIE-DOWN ROPING
This event shares many similarities with Steer Wrestling, except instead of wrestling a steer to the ground, the cowboy must catch up to a cow and tie it up in a certain way. This is a timed The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

TEAM ROPING
This event shares traits with both Steer Wrestling and Tie-Down Roping, and requires two people to complete. One person must capture the steer’s head with his rope while the other is responsible for tying the steer’s hind legs. This is a timed event, and the team that can perform their duties the fastest wins.

ARE YOU READY FOR STAMPEDE? You are driving in a car at a constant speed. On your left side is a valley and on your right side is a fire engine traveling at the same speed as you. In front of you is a galloping pig which is the same size as your car and you cannot overtake it. Behind you is a helicopter flying at ground level. Both the giant pig and the helicopter are also traveling at the same speed as you. What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation?? NOVICE SADDLE BRONC
Exactly like Saddle Bronc, except the participants in this event are all aged 20 or younger.
WILD PONY RACE
The Wild Pony Race is where you can watch the next generation of rodeo cowboys pursuing a wild pony. Several teams of youngsters in groups of three aged 8-12 try to tame a pony long enough to get their rider on the pony for a 2 jump ride. The team that has the fastest time doing this wins.
CHUCKWAGONS
The Strathmore Stampede annually welcomes the World Professional Chuckwagon Association Tour! During each heat, four wagons, 12 men, and 36 horses thunder through the figure-8 start in the infield and around the 5/8 mile track right in front of the crowd. Professional Chuckwagon Racing is a spectacle unsurpassed anywhere and will be a western memory you will never forget!

ast July, my focus for the Family Page was the noble horse and doesn’t it just make sense to you that July should be the month to honour “this gift to mankind,” as the Arabian Proverb goes?

There is never enough you can say about our galloping, whinnying friends. Horses capture our imagination, and our hearts. July and August have soooo many events to showcase our great, proud friend and listed below are just a few I could find. What a great way to spend the day with your family! • The Calgary Stampede (July 3rd – 12th) • Strathmore Heritage Days (July 31st – August 3rd) • The 46th Annual Reunion and Show (August 7th, 8th and 9th) at the Irricana Pioneer Acres Museum “The Old Time Show where there is always something new!” • The Spruce Meadows North American (July 1st – July 5th) 20 •

Studies have shown that when you interact with an animal, your blood pressure drops, feel-good hormones such as serotonin increase, and the stress hormone cortisol decreases. Even if you are afraid to ride a horse, spending time petting, scratching and feeding them is time well spent. Now, if you have not seen “War Horse” you are missing out on an incredible movie. I really didn’t want to see it to begin with as I thought it was going to be one of those really sad movies but I actually found it to be an uplifting and inspiring, “against all odds” goodshall-prevail kind of flick – take the time with your family to see this movie.
For those up and coming movie nights, here is a list of horse movies perfect for the family. Horse Crazy (2001) Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002) Touching Wild Horses (2002) Virginia’s Run (2002) Big Spender (2003) Seabiscuit (2003) Straight from the Heart (2003) Young Black Stallion (2003) Hidalgo (2004) Dreamer: Inspired by a true story (2005) Racing Stripes (2005) The Colt (2005) Flicka (2006) Moondance Alexander (2007) Every Second Counts (2008)

“I have heard my little voice many times and not listened to it and ultiately have made wrong decisions!”
The Little Voice
I
In May, Aleesha and I took a self-defense class at “Oku Damashi Martial Arts” in Langdon, which has given me a small sense of empowerment. At least now if I was ever in the position of being grabbed by someone, I would at least know how to get away or at least defend myself. During the course, the instructor told us we should always be aware of our surroundings and trust our “gut” instincts; most of us just float through situations being unaware, not even thinking about our little voice. I have heard my little voice many times and not listened to it and ultimately have made wrong decisions. This little voice is an ambassador of our deepest thoughts and it has been with us from the time we were small children, and most of the time we are not aware that it is there. Research shows that we have between 40,000 and 50,000 thoughts per day. However, most of them are unconscious – we are not aware of them. The key is to become more aware and the fabulous thing about being more aware and listening to your ”gut” or “little voice” you will

find it will actually develop and become your “sixth sense”. To help develop self-awareness, you need to take part in self-awareness exercises that help you increase your powers of observation – observation of the outer world and the inner world, and the cause and effect of your beliefs, thoughts, words and actions. To help you with this, I have included a few easy exercises just to get you started on your journey.
3 minutes of Mindfulness
A few times a day, make a point to spend 3 minutes focusing in on each physical movement you make. This is an in-the-now mindfulness meditation practice. During these three minutes concentrate on your physical moves, zeroing in on your experience of those movements. What does the door you’re opening feel like to you? What sensations are you experiencing when you pick up a pen and write down some notes? Do not over-analyze your movements. Simply focus on what it feels like physically, and really get into the experience of simple things you normally take for granted. Sounds simple – just focus on what you are doing right now for instance.
Other Hand Domination
Just use your non-dominant hand to perform simple tasks like writing, brushing your hair, even washing dishes. You will be surprised at how much mental effort it takes, and how aware you become of how entrenched your habits really are! If you were to do this exercise for 30-60 days in a row, you would create a new habit that would be as effortless as performing the same actions The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

with your dominant hand. Changing routine pushes your brain to be more alert and allows you to become more attune to yourself and what you are doing.
Ask Yourself
Who is reading now? Who is aware that you are reading now? Who is the observer? You see you became aware not only of the fact that you are reading now, but also you got to observe yourself reading. You are the observer and you experience things and simultaneously observe them happening to you. Think of awareness as an inner muscle. You need to practice it to develop it.

Evaluate
Most of The Little Voice’s beliefs were acquired in childhood and may not have been updated in a long, long time. Determine whether The Little Voice is helpful in any given situation. If it is, great! But if it isn’t say, “Thank you for sharing,” and do what the real you knows is best.
Meditate
One of the best ways to quiet The Little Voice, and discover who you really are, is to take some time every day to quiet your mind. Basic meditation is not difficult or complicated. Sit in a comfortable position on the floor, or in a chair, and simply focus your awareness on your breath, or repeat a silent mantra such as “Peace” for 5 to 10 minutes. When your mind wanders, which it will, gently bring it back to your breath or mantra. Do not make this work; try to have a little fun with this journey. I know personally I’m continually thinking about the past or the future and trying to learn to live in the present. Little by little, you will get closer with your “Little Voice”, “Gut Feeling” “Intuition” or whatever you would like to call it; just give it a chance. Growth is power.

Affirmations For Changing Your Life. I talk to myself all day long, sometimes inside my head but most of the time I hear myself speaking out loud. It doesn’t matter where I am; in the grocery store, cooking in my kitchen, just taking the dogs for a walk – I always seem to have something on my mind. I try not to waste my thinking time on trivial thoughts and at the moment I am trying to catch myself with the thousands of unconstructive thoughts running through my mind and replace them with positive affirmations; you know, thoughts that will actually make a difference in my life. I have three favourites to choose from, and all of them have been life changing for me. Let me share them with you:
1. Something wonderful will happen to me today. 26 •
thenewsyneighbour.com
2. Every day in every way I am getting better and better. 3. I am stronger than this. Three short and simple sentences that can change your life too. Something wonderful will happen to me today. It has brought many joyful opportunities and synchronicities into my life. It’s fun. It helps you celebrate life. It sets up a vibration of joyful anticipation, honing focus and gratitude. Every day in every way I am getting better and better opens me up to allowing. It unlocks my ability to expand and grow. It has attracted teachers, new directions, inspiration, breakthroughs, healing and miracles. When I am in the hole, when life is weighing me down and my coping abilities are stretched to the limit, I pull out the third affirmation. I am stronger than this. I am stronger than negative people. I am stronger than trauma or tragedy. I am stronger than ignorance or whatever other crappy life circumstances I am currently dealing with. I am stronger than this. SLEEP APNEA Ruining More Than a Good Night’s Sleep
your chronic medications within the first four weeks!
Sleep Apnea affects people of all ages and can lead to serious health concerns that have far greater impact than a bad night’s sleep. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a serious breathing disorder that impacts the quality of sleep and a person’s health.
You loose on average 3-5 lbs per week!
Who Is At Risk For Sleep Apnea?
This protein supported diet is less expensive than other food provided programs and has much more support.
Though sleep apnea can affect anyone, there are certain risk factors that increase an individual’s chance of developing this condition. Men over the age of forty probably make up the biggest segment of the population dealing with apnea events, though people who are obese or have a family history of obstructive sleep apnea are also at a greater risk for exhibiting sleep apnea symptoms. Individuals who naturally have a recessed chin can suffer from apnea episodes due to the body’s own tendency to inhibit the airway.
Does Sleep Apnea Ever Go Undiagnosed?
Sleep Apnea can go undiagnosed as sufferers think that their extreme snoring and disrupted sleep patterns are normal for them. There are several symptoms that accompany sleep apnea and act as clues to help you establish if a trip to your family doctor for a complete diagnosis is warranted. Symptoms like increased snoring, routine daytime sleepiness, reduced cognitive function that negatively impacts work or school commitments. Sleep Apnea can have a detrimental effect on a person’s life and be the cause of accidents, heart disease, hypertension and premature death. The short pauses in breathing (usually lasting for ten to thirty seconds) may not seem all that serious – but overtime can contribute to overall poor health and loss of life’s enjoyment.
How Can My Dentist Help Sleep Apnea?
Your dentist may be able to help with your sleep apnea by having a custom snore guard made. Designed to advance the lower jaw and increase the available airway space – patients are able to enjoy deeper sleeps due to enhanced breathing. If you suspect that you or a family member suffers from sleep apnea, it is highly recommended that you seek medical advice to rule out more serious health concerns. HOW TO MAKE GHEE
The Real “Better Than Butter” Natural Options
Ayurveda) • Alleviates colitis and peptic ulcers • It is a yogavahi—a catalytic agent that carries the medicinal properties of herbs into the seven dhatus or tissues of the body. Therefore, it is great for cooking with spices and herbs as it carries their healing properties deep into the tissues. It is a great base for use in healing salves, ointments, and is commonly used as massage oil in Ayurveda • Moisturizes dry skin, often used on lips, face, and scalp • Improves memory, understanding and intelligence • Lubricates connective tissues and aids healing of wounds • Alleviates blood disorders and aids detoxification • Casein- and Lactose- tolerant for most people (only trace amounts, if any) • Less mucous forming than typical butter • Tolerates heat well-suitable for cooking, frying and sautéing, with a smoke point of 325°F – 375°F

Ghee, also known as clarified butter, is a staple food item of India, used extensively in Ayurveda, India’s ancient natural healing system. It is considered a vital food and is highly respected for its medicinal and rejuvenating properties. It is the most healthful butter one can eat, especially if made from a good quality organic butter.
Purpose
This clarified butter recipe offers a healthy butter option by eliminating the troubles of conventionally made butter while simultaneously delivering healing benefits not inherent in typical butter. “Clarifying” butter removes milk solids (and preservatives), leaving only healthy butter fats. Only trace amounts of casein and lactose remain, therefore making it suitable for those with dairy intolerances. Test it out!
Only local raw butter or cream (used to make butter) from grass-fed cows can compete with ghee. If you can locate these raw treasures, then do not hesitate to keep them raw and enjoy! When making ghee these raw sources are your best possible ingredients.
Ghee is rich in high-quality fats, vitamins A, D, E and K and does not raise cholesterol. If prepared from grass-fed cows, ghee is said to have one of the highest natural contents of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). CLA has been linked to improving insulin resistance and potentially fighting cancer.
In general, butter is not recommended unless it’s local and raw or clarified (ghee). If you do not have access to a raw local dairy, then clarifying butter is definitely your best option as it transforms typically “unhealthy” butter into one that is healthy. Quality butter is a must when making ghee–unsalted organic butter at a minimum is recommended. Remember, always unsalted.
Ghee has a longer shelf life than butter and does not require refrigeration. It is also one of the few healthful, unrefined oils that can safely be used to high heats.

Bay #2, 410 Lakeside Blvd

Ingredients
• 2 Pounds of butter – organic & unsalted (local and raw ideal)
Directions
• Place 2 pounds of butter in a medium-sized pot under medium heat. • Keep a close eye until butter melts, then immediately turn heat down to the point where the melted butter barely boils. • Continue to cook at this heat. Do not cover. • The butter will begin to sputter and foam. This is normal. • After about 12-15 minutes it will begin to settle down and smell a bit like popcorn. • It will turn a bright golden color and white curds will form on the bottom of the pot. *This is a crucial point. As soon as you see the curds forming it is very important that you watch vigilantly until the tanning appears. • When the curds start to turn a slight tan color, the ghee is readyand should be removed from heat immediately or you chance burning it—it burns. It should not take longer than 15-20 minutes to achieve a perfected ghee, depending on the pan and heat source. Generally speaking, 12-15 minutes of this time is the slow boil phase. • Let the ghee cool until it’s just warm. • Skim off the top foam as it has medicinal properties. It is great served on top of warm grains. • While warm, pour the ghee through a sterile sieve or layers of cheesecloth into a clean glass jar, preferably sterile. Make sure the lid has a tight seal. • Store on a kitchen shelf and keep lid tight when not in use. No refrigeration needed.

Consumption
The medicinal properties of ghee improve with age. 1-2 tablespoons daily is ideal for most people. It can be added to any prepared food or used for cooking. Be sure to always use a dry clean spoon when ladling ghee and never allow any water to get into the jar of ghee—this error can create conditions for bad bacteria to grow and ruin your ghee. Now it’s time for you to experience the real “better than butter.” Happy clarifying! n our April issue, I did an article on how to make Kombucha and since then I have spoken to so many people who actually made this very healthy “tea”. “Many health claims have been made for kombucha but there is less research on the benefits of kombucha than there is on fermented milk products. It has certainly been shown to have similar antibiotic, antiviral and anti-fungal properties in lab tests. In rats, it’s been shown to protect against stress and improve liver function. There is a lot of experiential evidence from people who have been using kombucha over many years. Many of the benefits reported include improvements in energy levels, metabolic disorders, allergies, cancer, digestive problems, candidiasis, hypertension, HIV, chronic fatigue and arthritis. It‘s also used externally for skin problems and as a hair wash.” Well, I have found another little known health “drink” and it is called Kefir. Like kombucha, this is a product you make yourself and, again, there are many reports to its health benefits. I don’t know enough about it to judge one way or the other, but I did quite a bit of research that made me intrigued and curious about Kefir. The commercial brands are expensive to purchase and if you are going to use Kefir for the greatest health benefits, you are much better off learning to make your own. You start by purchasing kefir grains. One purchase of kefir grains lasts a lifetime and you can pass it down to your kids, using it over and over again. These grains can be used to culture milk, soy milk and coconut milk. Just follow the simple instructions, included in the kit. What is it, exactly? Creamy, cultured probiotic amazingness! That’s the scientific definition, of course. They are live active cultures of both bacteria and yeast. It’s the good bacteria – the bacteria that should

be naturally occurring in our gut, the bacteria we kill with sugar. Our digestive systems require healthy bacteria to function properly, to effectively remove toxins from our bodies and to help us absorb nutrients. Without them, we fall prey to a host of allergies, illnesses and food intolerances. Kefir is loaded with vitamins, minerals and amino acids that promote healing and repair and the “good” bacteria that allow our intestines and digestive system to function properly. Some people have seen relief of colitis symptoms because kefir can help with inflammation in the intestinal cells. It’s an excellent source of Vitamin K2, a vitamin critical to bone health and growth. Some of the compounds in kefir are helpful in regulating our immune function, allergic reactions and inflammation. It’s a great source of digestible protein, too. It’s believed that kefir may prove to be a help in preventing and treating tuberculosis, ulcers, diarrhea, colitis, reflux, urinary tract infections, prostate cancer, colon cancer, and autoimmune diseases. Many report that it has helped them to control hypertension, blood sugar and diabetes. There is some evidence that it may also have positive effects on the nervous system, creating a calming sensation, helping with depression, anxiety and ADHD. The process is quite simple – you just pour whole milk over the kefir grains, cover the jar with cheesecloth and use a rubber band to hold it in place. Let it set at room temperature to work its culturing magic. In 24-36 hours, strain out the grains, store your fresh kefir in the fridge and start the process all over again. The beauty of working with kefir grains is that they can be reused, indefinitely. I could actually pass them on to my children and grandchildren. They are easy to care for and can actually multiply over time; you will be able to divide them and give some away. You can even make Kefir water. It is totally allergy-friendly, gluten-free and dairy-free. It is a wonderful vegan beverage option. Kefir water is also so full of health benefits and a wonderful healing beverage. It is a natural supplier of various strains of healthy bacteria and yeasts (probiotics) to our digestive tract and can help to bring balance to your inner microflora, during the fermentation process it becomes an excellent source of Vitamins B1, B6, and B12. It helps tone and cleans the intestines. It has antibiotic and anti-fungal properties, in addition to the good bacteria and beneficial yeasts; it also contains many vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. It strengthens the immune system, it has a cleansing effect on the entire body, it helps to eliminate candida issues, it can help to normalize your metabolism, it helps treat skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne, it can reduce inflammation in the body, it can improve the function of the liver, it can increase energy levels and lend an overall feeling of good health, and it is very inexpensive to make! There are many, many sites on the internet with different options for making your own Kefir milk, water, coconut milk and the list goes on! Do a little research before you start, but it only makes sense to me to give it a try. For something that is so easy to prepare, we really should have no excuse for not giving it a whirl. I’m going to order what I need online and give it a try – I will get back to you with a follow-up article and let you know how it goes. May something wonderful happen for you today! Kathryn Hartwell

What Are They?
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. We usually think of bacteria as something that causes diseases. But your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called “good” or “helpful” bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

n the last month I have had the pleasure to participate in about a half dozen community events – both here in Strathmore, our family involvement in 4H, and my personal involvement with the Calgary Stampede organization. Every year I spend dozens and dozens of hours assisting in the dreaming, planning and execution of volunteer-run and non-profit events. Now, I am aware that time is PRECIOUS. This is a day and age that time seems to be moving faster (or maybe actually is, according to some), every day is packed full from the moment our eyes open to the moment they close, and saying YES to one thing often means saying NO to another. I have had friends ask me Why

– Why do I commit my limited time to volunteer? Why would I give something for nothing? Why is it that I take such immense satisfaction from the efforts that, as I expend them, do not contribute financially to our family and often means precious time away from them? And why do I think that they should consider volunteering too??
Here are 4 reasons volunteering (for anything!) is beneficial: 1) Connection
If you would like to feel part of a community (be it the town you live in, the things that interest you, or something you want to cultivate or learn in life), then volunteering will help you to do that. If new to a community, what better way to make new contacts and friends than to pool your effort into a like-minded venture? If you are seeking a way to improve your social skills, be it being shy, anxious, or any other factor, when you are volunteering people are HAPPY to have you come just the way you are, as long as your efforts are sincere. Wonderful personal relationships and community connection can be built from mutual interest and effort.
2) Good for your Health
Volunteering can boost self-confidence, ease depression, and often gets you moving physically – all of which contributes to the wellbeing of body, mind and spirit. There are actual studies showing that overall happiness increases with the amount of volThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

unteer hours contributed. Focusing your energy to contribute to benefit of another has the paradoxical effect of increasing your own sense of well-being. The feelings optimism, joy and sense of accomplishment can actually provide a boost to the immune system!
3) Learning New Skills
NO Sunburn! NO Tan Lines!
You might not get the paid position in a traditional company, but volunteer and you may get that exact job! I can say without a doubt that my volunteer experience has broadened my skill set by at least double what it would be if I never volunteered. Be it organizational, management, financial or creative experience that you could personally benefit from gaining – volunteering will exponentially increase your ability to practice and become adept these skills.
4) It is FUN!
The journey of meeting and working with people, the joy of seeing an idea come to life, and the sense of fulfilment that comes from knowing your effort is worthwhile and impactful is great fun! I have done things, been to places and had experiences that I never would have, if not for volunteering. In yoga, it is called Karma Yoga – the path to enlightenment that comes through action and service to others. I like to think it is also Bhakti Yoga – actions done in the spirit of compassion and love. I am a passionate and well-satisfied volunteer. If you are one as well, let me say thanks!! And if you are not volunteering yet – then I hope these reasons will help you get started! Namaste, Becky PS. “Volun-told” - this is the official term given when volunteering your spouse when they are not around... not quite the same as volunteering, unless of course they are happy to be there!

Luscious Joys
Healthy & Delicious
I will have to thank my sister Sherry for the inspiration in this month’s Luscious Joys. You see, she is trying to quit smoking after about 40 years and she is doing it by eating popsicles (hey whatever works). Every time she feels like having a cigarette, she has a Popsicle instead. So I thought I would find some luscious Popsicle recipes for her, and also for you. If you are still struggling with that nasty addiction, perhaps trying the Popsicle trick just might work for you too! Now wouldn’t that be wonderful?! Not to mention, with all the additives in store-bought foods nowadays, making your own Popsicles for your kids on these extremely hot summer days is a healthier option!
Blackberry and Vanilla Yogurt Swirled Popsicles
1 1/2 cups vanilla yogurt, divided 1 cup fresh or frozen blackberries, blueberries, raspberries or strawberries. Combine about half of the yogurt in a medium bowl with berries. Using a fork, mash together berries and yogurt enough to colour the yogurt but still leave chunks of fruit. Alternating by spooning berry yogurt and plain yogurt into Popsicle molds then freeze. From: Fireflies and Mudpies.
Blueberry Lemonade Popsicles
1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (about 5 to 6 lemons) or lemonade. 1 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries 1 cup of sugar 4 cups of water To get started, squeeze the lemons for the juice. Puree or mash blueberries. In a juice pitcher mix: lemon juice, blueberries, sugar, and water. Taste the mixture and add more of any ingredient to taste if needed. Pour the mixture into a Popsicle mold. Insert sticks and freeze for 6 to 7 hours or overnight. To remove, run Popsicle molds under warm water for 15 seconds. Slide mold off and enjoy. If there is any of the mixture left over, it is perfect to drink as a blueberry lemonade. From: The Shabby Creek Cottage
Chai Tea Latte Popsicles
8 oz. boiling water 2 Chai tea bags ½ cup heavy cream 1 tbsp agave nectar Place tea bags in boiling water and steep for 10 minutes; allow to cool until lukewarm and then add heavy cream and agave nectar; mix well. Divide evenly between Popsicle molds (about ¼ cup in each). Put in freezer until frozen. From: I love my disorganized life.

Mocha Banana Popsicles
2 cups of a Mocha Coffee Drink (I used Starbucks Caffe Mocha drink, found in a carton in the grocery store) 1 banana Handful of chocolate chips Blend the mocha coffee drink and the banana together in a blender. Add several chocolate chips to each Popsicle mold. Pour the blended mocha banana drink evenly among the molds. Freeze for at least 3 hours. Once set, place the Popsicle mold in several inches of room temperature water to help loosen the popsicles. The mold only needs to be in the water for several seconds. You can always re-dip if necessary. Once the popsicles have been removed, wrap the extras in plastic wrap and store in the freezer for later use. From: The First Year. Just think of all the recipes you could come up with for Popsicles! The possibilities are endless! Any kind of fruit, or just about anything you can drink you can put into a Popsicle. Before this day ends, I’m running off the store to find a Popsicle mold or two!

Some of the best ways to prevent injuries from any kind of summer workout is though self-massage, massage, and incorporating warm up and cool down stretches into your exercise routine. Here are a few that you can use: 1) Close your hand loosely and start tapping your body, starting at your legs, moving up your body, tapping only the large muscles. That includes your legs, calves, buttock, and stomach (gently), arms, shoulders in front and in back.

Start by bending over, putting your arms straight into the air and pull upward or put both hands on either side of your waist and do a mild twist to the right and then to the left. Take a deep breath in and out, relaxing the shoulders and while breathing in, lift your shoulders as high as you can, try to touch your ears, then breathe out while letting go.

MEDIA RELEASE 4 June 2015 For Immediate Release (Strathmore, Alberta) McBride Career Group—Strathmore is pleased to announce that as of April 1, 2015, they have signed a new 2 year Contract with the Government of Alberta to provide Career and Employment Services to the residents of Strathmore and surrounding areas. This new contract, according to Michelle Fox-Salim, Project Manager, will once again allow McBride Career Group to provide much needed one-on-one support for individuals seeking employment in the region. “The new contract allows our Career Coaches to spend more time with each individual client, which in turn allows them to develop a good understanding of every client’s unique needs, so they can then create a plan that fits each individual.” McBride will also continue to offer group workshops on topics such as Resume and Cover Letter writing, but this will not be the main focus anymore. The new contract allows clients to attend workshops if they wish to but, also allows the support of the Coaches without having to take a workshop. Senior Career Coach Valerie Alce is excited about the change, stating that “with the new contract we will be able to better meet the needs of all Albertans and have more time to dedicate to helping them. It could be that we help them write a resume, or apply for jobs online; we can even practice interview skills with them. We can individualize the plan for each client.”
Anyone looking for work, or considering a career change, really should stop in at McBride Career Group and access the numerous services they provide. It doesn’t matter if you are a student looking for an after school job, a recent graduate, someone that has just lost their job or someone simply looking to change what they are doing, McBride can help. Grandma - Praise the Lord! The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a “Honk if you Love Jesus” bumper sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting, so I bought the sticker and put in on my bumper. I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is and I didn’t notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn’t honked, I’d never have noticed. I found that LOTS of people love Jesus. Why, while I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and when he leaned out of his window and screamed, “for the love of God, GO! GO!” What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love. There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a sunny beach.
It’s A Boy...
Back in the woods, a redneck’s wife went into labour in the middle of the night, and the doctor was called out to assist in the delivery. Since there was no electricity, the doctor handed the father-to-be a lantern and said, “Here, you hold this high so I can see what I’m doing.” Soon, a baby boy was brought into the world. “Whoa there,” said the doctor. “Don’t be in a rush to put the lantern down... I think there’s yet another one to come.” Sure enough, within minutes he had delivered a baby girl. “No, no, don’t be in a great hurry to be putting down that lantern... It seems there’s yet another one in there!” cried the doctor. The redneck scratched his head in bewilderment, and asked the doctor, “Do you think it’s the light that’s attractin’ ‘em?”
I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. When I asked my teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant, he said that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something.

Well, I’ve never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back.

My grandson burst out laughing, why even he was enjoying this religious experience. A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, I waved to all my sisters and brothers grinning, and drove on through the intersection.

I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down, leaned out of the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away.

Hunched over trying to make myself vomit up an entire McCain’s pizza, I would let the shower drown out the gagging and the water wash away tears of self-hate. I had one of those bodies that girls starved themselves for and I couldn’t even see it. I thought of myself as a “bigger” girl at 48 kilos and made jokes about being fat and lazy after skipping dinner and running 10 kilometres. Then when I went overseas, something clicked. I started to notice that people I met outside the Gold Coast, Australia, didn’t think it was cool that my collarbones protruded from my chest; they thought it was cool that I was travelling the world by myself at 18 years old. It is all simply perspective. I learned that beauty in other cultures differs significantly to our western views. In Tonga, the more of the woman the better; in Tahiti, body hair and natural, puffy nipples are desired; women from a tribe in Ethiopia have their bodies scarred from birth to be more attractive to their future husbands. Its poisons are Saxitoxin and Tetrodotoxin, both of which can be lethal. Tetrodotoxin alone can cause rapid heart rate, muscle paralysis, a decrease in blood pressure, numbness, and tingling. Often, the puffer fish’s symptoms can go away in a few hours or days, but medical treatment needs to be given soon. During its life, the Puffer Fish is not really tough for humans to kill. But for other animals, it seems to carry a legend. Normally, even top tier predators like the shark stay away from it. Its barbs make it hard to fight and kill, and the fact that it expands can make the fish tough to eat. In the end, most animals just don’t want the hassle. The fact that most know it carries poison could also be something to think about. We can’t be the only smart species in the world, right?

It’s Tough to Repeat!
Football rts
Spo
Jocktalk he Varsity Blues, Queen’s University and the Hamilton Tigers all did it in the early years of the Grey Cup, but since 1937, teams in the Canadian Football League have not had a lot of success winning back to back championships. By my count, only 10 teams have been able to accomplish the feat since Toronto Argonauts did it in 1938. However, my numbers include the Edmonton Eskimos. The Eskimos laying claim as the only dominant CFL dynasty, as they captured 5 consecutive championships from 1978 to 1982. In a salary cap world, it is unlikely we will very witness such a powerhouse again. Only once in the past 17 years has a CFL team repeated as champions (the 2010 Montreal Alouettes). For a league as comparatively small as it is, the repeat is still a massive undertaking. So unfortunately, the odds are against the Calgary Stampeders as they look for back to back championships in 2015. Here are my top 10 reasons why it could or won’t happen.
5 Reasons Why Stamps Repeat! 1) Bo Levi Mitchell - The Stampeders have the best quar-
terback in the league! The Grey Cup MVP has been a CFL starter

for one season and already TSN has him number one on their list of top players in the CFL. The numbers don’t lie. A completion rate of over 63%, 22 TD’s and only 8 Interceptions, and most importantly, he’s a winner! “Bo is still a young quarterback,” says Head Coach and GM John Hufnagel. “He will make mistakes buy if he can limit those mistakes, we will have success.”
2) In Huff we Trust - This will be the final season on the sidelines for John Hufnagel, as next season he will hand the coaching reigns over to Dave Dickenson. “I really don’t care about the other team! I care about my team. How will they respond? How can I prepare my team to win a football game? What is my team’s edge?” The coach has me pumped and I am not even playing.
3) Jon Cornish - The Stamps have the best QB in the league and they also have the best running back in the league. Cornish should have been number one on the top 50 list but injuries kept him out half the season. Cornish admits his body has taken a pounding over the years, but he is still in the prime of his career and he has some lofty goals heading into a new season.
4) Defence - For the second straight year, the Stamps lost their best defensive player to the NFL. While Shawn Lemon may The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

be gone, the team has arguably the best secondary in the league. With new rules giving a major advantage to the receivers, the Stamps will benefit from their all import back field. “I feel good about our defence,” says Hufnagel. “We had some good battles in training camp and we had to make some tough decisions but I have great confidence in (defensive coordinator Rich) Stubler’s system.”
5) Destiny - I know you can’t put a lot of stock into this reason, but it’s just a hunch. We saw American Pharaoh win Triple Crown. Jordan Speith has won the first two legs of the Grand Slam in Golf. The Chicago Black Hawks are now a modern day dynasty in the NHL. These are things we don’t see every day so it’s time we see a back to back champion in the CFL. 5 Reasons Why Stamps Won’t Repeat! 1) Thin offensive line - No Brett Jones, no Stanley Bryant,
a couple of early season injuries and that spells big trouble for the team. “I am a little concerned,” says Hufnagel. The offensive line is young and relatively inexperienced. It could be a long season for Bo Levi Mitchell and Jon Cornish if they don’t get the protection or the blocking. A lot of fans are hoping Jones (CFL’s most outstanding lineman) will return mid season after a tryout with the New York Giants. However it’s not something the organization is counting on and he will be an unrestricted free agent.
2) Complacency - This may be the biggest factor standing
in the way of the Stampeders, according to 2006 Grey Cup Champion Kelly Bates.

toughest competitors in the league and he has the best receiver in the league in Adarius Bowman. The Eskimos couldn’t beat the Stampeders last season but if Reilly is healthy, look out!
4) Injuries - The Stampeders had two important mottos last season. “Finish” and “Next man up.” It really was remarkable how this team was able to deal with their injuries last season but this year their organizational depth will be tested. 5) It’s the year of the Goat! - The page has turned on the Chinese calendar and it’s no longer the year of the horse. I am not sure who the goat is going to be in 2015, but if the Stamps don’t repeat, I am sure we will find one. I did a little research on Reunion Island and thought I was finished, but something made me go back and take a second look – and I’m glad I did. They say Reunion is one of the Indian Ocean’s last great island adventures. The diversity of landscapes is truly astonishing. Jutting out of the ocean like a basaltic shield cloaked in green, this scenically magical island is like a mini-Hawaii. What should you expect? Emerald forests, tumbling waterfalls, amazing mountainscapes, twisting roads, soul-stirring panoramas, energetic coastal cities and a sprinkling of white- or blacksand beaches. An island of true contrasts, this unique island in the middle of the Indian Ocean is simply one of the most intriguing spots on Earth.
ferent as night and day, depending on where you travel within the island. From the flat coastal areas where watersports are king to the mountainous interior, to adrenaline sports offering nail-biting excitement. The fun is doubled by the island’s friendly residents, representing a variety of cultures, yet all living together in true island harmony. The cuisine is special, too. You’ll find French, Creole, Indian, Chinese, even Italian foods, all prepared with a bit of an island twist, making excellent use of the abundant seafood available here as well as locally grown and often unique fruits, vegetables, and spices that are a traditional part of Reunion Island cuisine. It sounds like this amazing island greets travelers with the most amazing holiday experiences! I’m thinking I need at least three weeks to see this incredible place – where is my calendar?! The Svalbard Islands
vel
Tra
I
If your goal in life is to get away from it all, this is your destination.
you have never seen with local ingredients such as seal, whale, reindeer, grouse and arctic char. On rare occasions you may also find polar bear meat on the menu.
The Svalbard Islands are located in the Arctic Ocean, halfway between Norway and the North Pole. All settlements in Svalbard are located on the main island of Spitsbergen and all of the other islands are uninhabited except for the Polar Bears, seals, whales, reindeer and such; they are all nature reserves, generally inaccessible without special permission.
There is plenty to do; find a ski resort, try a fjord cruise or wildlife safari, or plan your hiking or fishing holiday. There are different kinds of hotels and camp sites throughout the country. Staying at a fishermen’s cabin is an experience out of the ordinary. Originally built as accommodation for visiting fishermen during the fisheries of Lofoten, rorbu (as it is called in Norwegian) cabins are today immensely popular amongst both Norwegian and foreign visitors, giving you the experience of staying in a quaint little fishing town. There are plenty of opportunities to go fishing - either on your own or as part of a crew on board the local fishing boats. You are advised to book well in advance, especially if you are coming to Norway in July and August.
Svalbard is the northernmost tip of Europe and its settlements are the northernmost permanently inhabited spots on the planet. Located between the 76° and 81° parallels, they are far more northerly than any part of Alaska and all but a few of Canada’s Arctic islands. Svalbard is the Arctic North as you always dreamed it existed. This wondrous archipelago is a land of dramatic snowdrowned peaks and glaciers, of vast ice fields and forbidding icebergs, an elemental place where the seemingly endless Arctic night and the perpetual sunlight of summer carry a deeper kind of magic, a terrain rich in epic legends of polar exploration. Svalbard’s main settlement and entry point, Longyearbyen, is merely a taste of what lies beyond and the possibilities for exploring further are many: boat trips, glacier hikes, and expeditions by snowmobile or led by a team of huskies. Svalbard is as close as most mortals can get to the North Pole and still capture its spirit. But don’t let that scare you off; there are cafés, pubs and restaurants in Longyearbyen, the capital of Svalbard. Having your meal in a Sami turf (a home made out of wood and sod) is a special experience and all the restaurants have very unique menus of such
Hotel smotel! How about a medieval farm in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley? Or bring your children to a farm with animals in southern Norway. Horse riding, fishing, biking, hiking and boat trips are often offered. There is a wide selection of international flight and ferry connections to Norway, and there are several ways of getting around when you arrive. Hey, live a little and experience this remote vacation spot, just watch out for the polar bears!

THE GET TO KNOW YOUR
Presented by
www.thegettoknowyourneighbourfestival.com
7 months of planning and it was over in 1 day. Kind of like a wedding, but this was MUCH better! Haha!
The Newsy Neighbour's 1st inaugural Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival was a huge success. We anticipated roughly 500 people walking around downtown and we were blown away by estimates of thousands of people showing up and participating in the event, with the sole purpose of introducing consumers to businesses available in our amazing town of Strathmore. The streets were packed with people of all ages. From the bouncy castle sponsored by Chinook Credit Union, kids karaoke at the King Eddy, to the bucket dump by Value Drug Mart, the high heel races at the Standard Shoe Shop, the BBQ by BDS Properties and served by Aztec Real Estate realtors, to a box city by 5 for Life, a cupcake decorating contest by Kim's Cafe, huge bubbles and chalk fun by the Strathmore Library, the beer gardens at the Strathmore Hotel / Green Bar, to the Nutty Scientist science experiments, the carnival games put on by Strathmore Assembly of Youth, balloon animals and face painting at Lil Hoots Consignment, lasso lessons by ARGRA, a wishing tree and community mandala put on by Pranava Yoga in the park, and musical entertainment by Nathan Hollinda, Agua Quina Latino Bane and the Strathmore Jammers at Kinsmen... there was something for absolutely everyone. We ran around like chickens with our heads cut off for the entire day and it was so worth it. The event went extremely well and we couldn't have asked for anything better. The sun was shining, the crowds came out, everyone was fed and everyone had fun! We are definitely doing it again next year!
How much money was raised?
The Newsy Neighbour raised $760 for the Strathmore Municipal Library. We had people vote online the past 3 months for the charity they wanted to see get the money. The Strathmore Municipal Library won by a hair with 5 for Life immediately next in line. Monies donated to the Strathmore Municipal Library will go towards building a new library in the Town of Strathmore. The Newsy Neighbour Festival also raised 95lbs and $20 cash for the Wheatland Food Bank by asking people to bring a food donation when they came to the festival. $934.25 was raised at the poker run and Strathmore Pawn for Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta by selling ballots to enter to win Miranda Lambert tickets. The winner of the

Miranda Lambert tickets is Kristin Harriman. Congratulations! $254 was raised by Value Drug Mart for the Loftus Hope Fund with their “Big Splash” event. A special thanks to Donna Bissett for being the all-day dunkee! The grand total of money raised the weekend of June 20th was $2933.25. This is fantastic and the goal is to double it next year!
What else was going on?
Orange Jigsaw Real Estate cooked and served over 100 hamburgers and 80 hotdogs free of charge. AC Photography gave away a free photography mini session. Strathmore Pawn had Tigger, a Care Bear, Sponge Bob Square Pants & Dora the Explorer mascots walking around all day! ARGRA was teaching people of all ages how to lasso while they promoted the amazing Canadian Rockies International Rodeo and Music Festival. To go along with the beer gardens, the Strathmore Hotel had an open jam going on in the streets. There were buskers and street performers in different spots all throughout the festival. We know there is more we are not mentioning. There was just SO much going on, if you didn’t come this year, you won’t want to miss it next year!
What are people saying about the festival?
You guys did a wonderful job I really didn't know that there was that many businesses downtown, not to mention all the new entrepreneurs! Great job! ~ Darylene Winters from Wheatland Towing I hope you have recovered from Saturday ... what an amazing and awesome job you all did to pull that off... as only someone who has been there and done that can understand :) Thank you for all your efforts!! People are still talking about it and God was definitely looking after everyone with the weather ... couldn't have been more perfect! ~ Vicki from Studio 86 Congratulations on the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival - I only got to see it close to the end, but managed to buy a couple of things (including a birthday gift for one of those guys that is impossible to buy for). One of the ladies I know at the Royal Bank said she didn't get there personally, but her daughter was babysitting 4 kids and took them down. They came back 4 hours later all enthused about how much fun they had. So good job to all of you for your hard work and enthusiasm. ~ Bea Winter Thank you so much to everyone who came to visit us at our leggings booth! We loved chatting and visiting with you all and we met so many great people! Thanks for a wonderful summer kick off from everyone at Buskins Leggings by Daryl-Anne Fletcher - Affiliate You guys did an amazing job...what a bonus for our downtown!!!! And, in fact, for our whole town!! ~ Councillor Bob Sobol The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

I look forward to seeing even more participants next year! Way to go ladies! ~ Bobbie Parkins Fantastic job on organizing such a great event! Strathmore Value Drug Mart will be there again next year!! ~ Donna Bissett of Value Drug Mart The gentlemen and lady that were jamming all afternoon were great! What happened with the Shopping Challenge?
In order to enter to win one of our 3 HUGE baskets, you had to spend $25 in 10/15 downtown Strathmore stores in the Shopping Challenge that has been printed in our magazine for the past 5 issues. The businesses you had to shop at were Beautiful Shenanigans, Lil Hoots Children's and Maternity Consignment Boutique, The Red Carrot, Ideal Nutrition, Beltone Hearing, Value Drug Mart, Active Solutions for Health, The Standard One Stop Shoe Shop, Valley Dental Clinic, Masala HUB, Ripperz (Skateboard and Clothing), Bubbles Fine Drycleaning and Laundromat, Sole Discretion, and Macarina Sari-Sari Store. We didn’t have as many entries as we would have liked, but we are hoping that after everyone seen the amazing gift baskets we gave away they will want to participate next year. We have already had 6 people say they wish they had finished it. Gift Basket 1 valued at over $2400 was won by Dallas Sandmaier Gift Basket 2 Valued at over $1500 was won by Leanne Owel Gift Basket 3, Valued at over $1000 was won by Debbie Fuel. Congratulations to the winners and a special thank you for taking the time to support your local businesses that take part in this fantastic challenge. We promise the baskets will be even better next year!!
Who do we need to thank for helping us put on this incredible event?
There are so many people, and we really hope we don’t forget anyone. First of all, this event would not have happened without all the hard work and incredible support and sponsorship from the Town of Strathmore. Special thanks to Tracy Simpson and Kendra Armstrong. Seriously, we couldn’t have done any of this without you guys. THANK YOU! Next, there would have been no porta-potties and hand washing stations without Huxted Waste & Recycle, and that is a very important fact. New Space Construction was extremely generous! There are many elements of the day that would not have come through without your cash donations PLUS your hard work picking up all the tables and chairs, setting them up and taking them down and returning them. THANK YOU! The Real Estate Reps: Carey Stairs, Hayley Poirier, Debbie Enslen helped us in the planning process, and made sure we had lots of tents and coverage the day of the event, provided signs for us to put around town then came and gave out free popcorn. Thank
you!
Strathmore Times advertised the event for us in their newspaper for 3 weeks before the event. Thank you! Waldo’s Imaging and the Strathmore & District Chamber of Commerce brought in the incredible Latino band that played on the stage at Kinsmen Park. Phoenix Signs and Graphics, Sole Discretion, Assist Business, BDS Properties, Kim’s Cafe, Chinook Credit Union, Atco Gas, CIBC, Rocking R Guest Ranch, Lil Hoots Consignment, Pranava Yoga, Wheatland Society of Art, Strathmore Municipal Library, The Standard One Stop Shoe Shop, Bubbles Drycleaning, The Red Carrot, Tamara Desjardins (Realtor) & Strathmore RV. THANK YOU for your hard work, cash sponsorship, donations and everything or anything else you did! All the volunteers that came and worked their butts off that day helping: Todd Gosling, Brett Presley, Brodie Presley, Ron Presley, Paul McDonald, Tifannie Hartwell, Ryan Geremia, Amy Neufled, Kaeleigh Reesor, David Reesor, Amalia Zarokostas, Mike Zarokostas, Ron Presley, Kristine Jones, Bob Sobol (gosh I hope we are not forgetting anyone) we are so SO thankful for you! Marci Hira Events put together a wonderful clean-up crew to go through the streets when the festival was over and make sure everything looked the way it did before it started. Huge thank you! To sum it all up, we are absolutely over the moon happy with the response we got to this festival! We are so honoured that so many people joined us in this event. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! We will do it again next year!!!

How many ducks would there be, if you saw two ducks in front of two ducks, two ducks between two ducks, and two ducks behind two ducks? Answer: 4 ducks-because they are in a row.
A magician and parrot story
A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience would be different each week, so the magician allowed himself to do the same tricks over and over again. There was only one problem: The captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood he started shouting in

the middle of the show: “Look, it’s not the same hat” “Look, he is hiding the flowers under the table” “Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades ?” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything; it was, after all, the captain’s parrot. One day the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself on a piece of wood in the middle of the ocean with the parrot, of course. They stared at each other with hate, but did not utter a word. This went on for a day and another and another. After a week the parrot said: “OK, I give up. Where’s the boat?”

WHY IS EVERYONE YELLING?
Summer ‘Vacation’ Holdin’ Holden
WHY AM I YELLING?? DO I EVEN KNOW HOW TO NOT YELL ANYMORE?
WHAT DAY IS IT??
Jenny Schoberl is a 30 year old professional musician turned stay-at-home. In order to keep some semblance of her adult-brain working, she began writing the popular Mommy Blog “Holdin’ Holden” in 2008, which receives over 1,000 unique hits per day. Jenny also enjoys entertaining her ever-growing Facebook Fan Page with over 51,000 fans who have dubbed her the “Howard Stern of Mommy Blogging”. Contact Jenny at http:// holdinholden.com or email her at: holdinholden@yahoo.com
few years ago, I learned that the term “summer vacation” is nothing more than an evil and cruel play on words. Summer vacation is NO vacation for adults! What the hell?? First bills, and now this? I find that as the summer goes on (and ON), the thoughts that run through my head begin to change from Mary Poppins to frickin’ Medusa. If only I could turn everyone to stone!! Now, either I’m completely insane, or other moms have these same thoughts too! I’m going to guess it’s a mixture of both. Do you remember the “this is your brain on drugs” commercial with the chick from “She’s All That” smashing the egg with a frying pan? Yeah. It’s like that. Commiserate with me!
WHO AM I? WHO ARE THESE LITTLE PEOPLE AND WHY ARE THEY CALLING ME “MOMMY”? WHY IS EVERYTHING IN THIS HOUSE STICKY?? …. And that was just in the first hour. We’re going to need some strong drinks to make it through these next few months. Hang in there!

I am a big project person. 100 percent of the time I have a project on the go. Currently, I am laying laminate in my back entrance, planning to paint the last bedroom upstairs, considering pouring concrete in my side walkway and the list goes on and on. Just last week I spotted a few bags of concrete in my garage that were left over from building our new fence last year and I thought, now what project could I make with all these extra bags of concrete?! How about my own inspiring creative artsy stepping stones, of course! I did a little research on the net and found the very simplest DIY instructions, which, of course, I’m here to share. I spent the entire afternoon making my own stepping stones (I’m thinking of offering a stepping stone course one sunny afternoon in August; it would be so much fun!). Step One – go to garage sales and the dollar store (two of my favourite things to do) to find all the cool and creative stuff for your stepping stones, like old dishes and coffee cups, shells, marbles, stones and whatever else turns your mind into a creative machine. I found tons of dishes and mugs at local garage sales! Step Two – take all the mugs, put them into a garbage bag on a cement pad, cover the bag with an old sweater (that didn’t sell in my last garage sale), and use a two pound hammer to smash the you-know-what out of them! (It’s very therapeutic!). You need to use thick reusable plastic gloves to sort the ceramics as to not cut your fingers. Step Three – organize all the creative items into aluminium pans (from the dollare store). Lay out the plastic stepping stone moulds, which are plastic trays for putting under your plants (no holes) that I picked up at Canadian Tire. Step Four – lay out your ideas for the stepping stones into the trays! Try getting some creative juices flowing and start mixing concrete! Step Five – I found this the tricky part, as I had no idea how much to mix per tray. TIP: only mix enough for one tray at a time. I found about 5 cups of concrete per large round tray and just experment with the water, adding a little at a time to get the right consistancy. Not too runny, but not too thick. After a couple trays, I found the balance. I used an old bucket and then

poured the concrete into my first tray. I just used my gloved hands to smooth the concrete out and then I started adding the ceramics nd beads. Be careful not to make the concrete too thin or the beads will sink right in.
Out of the bag of concrete I made 6 big round stepping stones and two smaller ones and there was still enough in my container to make posibly one more large stone, but I had run out of trays. I poured the bag of concrete into a large plastic container, with a lid to keep it safe from moisture, as I plan on making a lot more of these and attending a lot more garage sales looking for unique items for my next batch of stepping stones!. Trust me, this is a great way to spend a sunny afternoon. And the best part is, I have 5 more bags of concrete in my garage. YAY!!! You have to let them sit ovenight and then remove them from the trays. Let them sit the whole entire next day and spray with water a couple of times; they say it makes them stronger. I bought some clear wet look sealer to coat them with for protection. Oh, and I hear tomorrow is going to be 33 degrees out… Hmm, wonder what I’II be up to!! And seriously, if you would like to spend an afternoon at my house making your own stepping stones, send me an email – I’m thinking Saturday, August 8th or 15th – send me an email at kathryn.newsyneighbour@gmail.com and I will send you details! Until then, may something wonderful happen for you today!~ Kathryn Hartwell

Although Lily Iona Mackenzie has not lived in our parts for quite a while, she did spend a few years in the Langdon area and as a fellow writer, respects must be given. Lily Iona Mackenzie’s stepfather, Chester Stevens, had a farm in Langdon for many years. Chester’s father Truman moved to Langdon from Chicago and homesteaded there. She lived on the farm as a girl (she was known then as Lily Stevens) and has fond memories of the area. It shaped many of her values—the importance of hard work, determination, and grit, all elements that are necessary for a writer. She also performed at the Chestermere Lake Community Hall in a Christmas concert when she was four.

About Fling? Feather, an aging hippie, returns to her Calgary home to help her mother, Bubbles, celebrate her 90th birthday. Bubbles has received mail from the dead letter office in Mexico City, asking her to pick up her mother’s ashes, left there seventy years earlier and only now surfacing. A woman with a mission, and still vigorous, Bubbles convinces a reluctant Feather to take her to Mexico so she can recover the ashes and give her mother a proper burial. Both women have recently shed husbands and have a secondary agenda: they’d like a little action. And they get it. Alternating narratives weave together Feather and Bubbles’ odyssey with their colourful Scottish ancestors, creating a family tapestry. In Mexico, the land where reality and magic co-exist, Feather gets a new sense of her mother. The Indian villagers mistake Bubbles for a well-known rain goddess, praying for her to bring rain so their land will thrive again. Feather, who’s been seeking “The Goddess” for years, eventually realizes what she’s overlooked. Meanwhile, Bubbles’ quest for her mother’s ashes (and a new man) has increased her zest for life. A shrewd business woman, she’s certain she’s found the fountain of youth at a mineral springs outside San Miguel de Allende; she’s determined to bottle the water and sell it. But gambling is her first love, and unlike most women her age, fun-loving Bubbles takes risks, believing she’s immortal. Unlike her daughter, Bubbles doesn’t hold back in any way, eating heartily, lusting after strangers, her youthful spirit and innocence convincing readers that they’ve found the fountain of youth themselves in this character. At ninety, she comes into her own, coming to age, proving it’s never too late to fulfill one’s dreams. Fling, a meditation on death, mothers and daughters, and art, suggests that the fountain of youth is the imagination, and this is what they all discover in Mexico. It’s what Bubbles wants to bottle, but she doesn’t need to. She embodies it. The whole family does. Praise for Fling: Lewis Buzbee, who teaches creative writing in the University of San Francisco’s MFA in writing program and has published several volumes of fiction and non-fiction, says, “Fling is both hilarious and touching, the madcap journey of an aging mother and her adult daughter from cold Protestant Canada into the hallucinogenic heart of Mexico’s magic, where the past literally comes to life. Every page is a surprise, and “Bubbles” is one of the most endearing mothers in recent fiction. A scintillating read.” Fling, by Lily Iona Mackenzie July 1, Pen-L Publishing, $14.97 A 90-year-old woman goes on a trip to Mexico City with her hippie daughter — and runs into several very dead, very funny relatives on the way — in the freewheeling new novel from the Bay Area author, who teaches writing at the University of San Francisco. www.pen-l.com/Fling.html

Independent business 209 - 175 Chestermere Station Way. Chestermere, AB Servicing Chestermere And Area Since 2007 On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. “One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me,” said one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence. Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, “One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me...” He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along. “Come here quick,” said the boy, “you won’t believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls!” The man said, “Beat it kid, can’t you see it’s hard for me to walk.” When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery. Standing by the fence they heard, “One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me.” The old man whispered, “Boy, you’ve been tellin’ me the truth. Let’s see if we can see the Lord...” Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord. At last they heard, “One for you, one for me. That’s all... Now let’s go get those nuts by the fence and we’ll be done...” They say the old man had the lead for a good half-mile before the kid on the bike passed him.

Numbers got you going crazy, call us we can help! Resumes Are The Dating Profile Of A Job Seekers’ World. Let’s face it, looking for, and getting the perfect job, is just about as difficult as finding and marrying Prince Charming (or Princess Right). Now, it has been awhile since I removed myself from the dating pool (19 years in fact), but I have numerous friends that are on one site or another trying to find that special someone. They have spent many hours writing, rewriting, editing and tweaking their profile. Huge amount of thought goes into what to list for their interests and passions. Many photos are selected and rejected until the perfect one is finally placed. They’ve called in friends to get their opinion on the profile. They have checked it over for spelling and grammar errors, made sure that they don’t come across as a bubble head or player. Why? So that they can stand out from the other profiles; so that they can attract attention and garner enough interest that a potential mate will take the chance and ask them out for that first date. If only people spent the same amount of time and energy on their resume as they would a dating profile, then the task of job hunting would be so much easier. Resumes and dating profiles serve the same purpose; they are both basically an advertisement with

you being the product. A good resume, like a good profile, will make you stand out from the crowd, keep the person’s attention and cause them to act; act being that they contact you for an interview/first date. Here’s a reality. When employers are looking at a resume, they give it maybe 30 seconds to catch their attention. It’s like scrolling through pages of dating profiles; nope, nope, oh hell no, ugg, nope and finally “hello there handsome!” If you can’t get their attention, you’re not getting the interview. So how do you ensure that your resume will be successful? Treat it like a dating profile. Don’t just quickly throw it together and hope for the best. Take your time; your resume and cover letter are going to be the first impression your potential employer has of you. Unless you have letters behind your name like Ph.D, MD, or DVM, keep it to two pages. One page works as well. Any more than that and it goes into the “nope” pile. Research the position, know what they are looking for, use their terms and jargon. Typos and spelling errors are the kiss of death. One letter is all the difference between “experienced in public relations” and “experienced in pubic relations”. Don’t be that guy. Make it easy for the person reading your resume. Use clean and simple fonts such as Calibri, Times New Roman, Ariel or Bookman. Use white paper and black ink (unless you are applying for a creative positon in graphic design or advertising, in which case – express yourself.) Have a friend check your resume and cover letter over for you. Use resources such as www.alis.ab.ca or the skilled staff at McBride Career Group, to review your resume and offer advice. If you find you’re sending out lots of resumes but just aren’t getting the interview, take a good look at your resume. Why isn’t it doing its job? Consider taking a resume writing workshop or meeting with a Career Coach. It is a tough job market out there. Employers can be very picky about who they interview and ultimately hire. You need to put your best foot forward and have a strong first impression, because you may never get a chance to make a second. Happy hunting, may you find your prince charming, dream job. What is the first question you ask a Realtor when you meet one? Whether you know them or not, most likely the first question that will pop up into your mind will be “How is the market?” Well, my answer will usually depend on whether you are buying or selling.
Chestermere
Real Estate Update “How is the market?”
70 •
thenewsyneighbour.com
If you are connected with your Realtor, you will likely know how the market has been performing in Chestermere for the last 6 months. It has certainly been an interesting ride! The market was very sluggish at the beginning of the year. In the entire month of January we had a total of only 9 sales in Chestermere and it took on average 59 days to sell with an average price of $524,133. By the month of June, the market had started to correct to a more balanced market. Fifty two homes sold for an average price of $532,713. These homes were on the market for an average of 66 days before being sold.

If you are thinking of selling your home, make sure to have your Realtor advise you about the selling process and ensure they prepare a comprehensive Comparative Market Analysis for you (CMA). The CMA is not an appraisal of your property. It is done to determine the current market value of your home. It’s an examination of the prices at which similar properties to yours sold in your area based on the most current local market data. Become an educated seller and search for a second or even a third opinion before you put your home on the market to ensure you are not undervaluing your home and to ensure it is priced right for the current market. Interview your Realtor and don’t hesitate to ask for them to justify how they came to the price they recommend for the sale of your home. Also, find out from them how they intend on marketing your home. It is important that you don’t undervalue your home for a quick sale, and at the same time if you overvalue your home, it will sit on the market for an extended period of time without any serious potential buyers. A reliable Realtor will help you price your home properly and in your best interest. Most sellers and buyers are now more informed and want to make sure the Realtor working with them will care about their wants and needs throughout the entire process of selling or buying their homes. School is over, summer is here enjoy to the fullest. Wishing you a great buying and selling experience and hoping you achieve your family dreams! Natasha Eden See ad on front cover and in directory

HOME INSPIRATION KITCHEN RENO We moved into a New – Old Home in Strathmore just over 2 years ago now and have been painting, replacing light fixtures, building new fences and when that lotto cheque arrives in the mail putting in beautiful plank wood flooring. The biggest reno you will ever do is “The Kitchen” every time I walk into my kitchen I am reminded of how I will be spending a good part of my winter. Yup, the Oak cabinets really, really need to be redone. I
don’t have a huge budget and we are kinda do-it-your-selfers, so I have been surfing the net looking for inspiration. WELL, I’m telling you there are a lot of really great ideas for easy low budget do-it-your-selfers to beautify your home making it comfy and cozy. Personally, I like the old country look with darker colors and lots of wood. I came across the idea of using wood for a backsplash in the kitchen instead of tile. My husband looked at me sideways when I mentioned the idea but after I showed him the pictures he warmed up to the idea. Talk about adding some character to your kitchen and there are so many different choices. You can run it vertical or horizontal and finish it off with a good varnish or sealer. For your countertops why not try Stone effects, you can replace your kitchen countertops to get an attractive result that has the beauty and elegance of genuine granite and it can be used on a variety of countertop surfaces – including laminated plastic, stone, concrete, tile or wood. The result is an inexpensive alternative to countertop replacement with a finish that is both durable and beautiful. Now the cabinets, I most certainly do not have the budget to replace them, they are the natural oak color which is O.K. but I have always preferred the rich dark Oak Colors – unfortunately the important factor involved with a stained and sealed cabinet surface is that it is stained and sealed. There are very few options when attempting to change the appearance of the wood from a light to a dark stained look. You will either have to strip off the finish down to the raw wood or give the impression of that process by way of certain techniques. This is what I learned: Strip off the present finish. This involves using a paint-stripping compound to aid in breaking down the top clear coat. The secret is to let the product do its work (follow the instructions). Next you will sand off the layer of wood that is stained – exposing the new wood below. Now simply stain and apply two coats of polyurethane over the new raw wood. Cabinet Transformations. Rust-Oleum has an awesome product that will completely change the appearance of your cabinets. I find that this product works best over oak. The glaze coat becomes captured inside the wood grain and gives the appearance of a stained surface. There are lots of color options available. Glaze coat. Professionals usually do this - because it can be a little tricky. After preparing the surface (cleaning and de-glossing), a solvent-based glaze coat is applied over the surface of the wood. The glaze coat varies with each professional. Some will use a colored poly/stain mixture found at a flooring supply provider. This technique is usually applied with a super fine spray tip and with several thin coats until the desired effect is reached. After it has had time to dry – you then apply a coat of polyurethane over the top. Kathryn Hartwell

Silly business owner
A business owner decides to take a tour around his business and see how things are going. He goes down to the shipping docks and sees a young man leaning against the wall doing nothing. The owner walks up to the young man and says: “Son, how much do you make a day?” The guy replies: “150 dollars!” The owner pulls out his wallet, gives him $150, and tells him to get out and never come back. A few minutes later, the shipping clerk asks the owner: “Have you seen that UPS driver?? I asked him to wait here for me!”

Realtors are asked many questions regarding everything about buying and selling your home... including tips on moving pets. My biggest area of experience with moving animals and pets is mainly with the 4 legged variety of pets. Dogs and cats have always been an important part of my family life. We all know that moving homes has its own set of challenges and can be stressful. I asked a client the other day how her kitties were doing. She had just sold her home and was busily packing for her looming closing date. Instead of explaining, she said “come here and see.” So I followed her into the basement bathroom, she opened the cupboard under the sink and there was Buddy, her one kitten. He just looked up at us and meowed “hi.” She smiled and said, “He only comes out to eat.” He will be fine, she has no doubt, but Buddy knows that something is up and he isn’t ready to deal with it yet. There are several things we can do to help our critters cope with moving, and please discuss options with your veterinarian to find out what is best for them. Here are a few things to keep in mind: FIRST... Call your vet and book an appointment. They advise not to wait until the last minute to do this, because there are several things to consider including pet records, possible vaccinations and great advise on keeping your pet comfortable and safe. 1) Try to keep to your normal schedule as much as possible. Routines are very important, especially when so much else around them is changing. Feed and/or walk your pet at the same time that you would normally. 2) Go into your new dwellings first before you bring your pet in. If you don’t have anywhere to leave your pet or are traveling alone, keep your pet on a leash or in a carrier at first. Inspect your new home for anything that might be harmful, such as wet paint, sawdust, broken glass or bare wires. 3) Once you are sure that it is safe, release your pet from the carrier or the leash. Make sure that all doors and windows are

closed for the time being. Allow your pet to get used to your new dwellings. 4) Lay out familiar items, such as a familiar bed and toys. 5) Take time out to play with your pet. Give them time to associate their new home as a positive place. 6) Make sure that you update their ID tags. If your pet is microchipped, make sure that information is changed as well. Since you are in a new place, it will be easier for your pet to get lost, as they are in a new environment. 7) Go over your new yard very carefully to make sure it is dog or cat proof, there are no harmful items or chemicals, the gates close, the fence is secure and your pets can’t escape. Your pet may be confused with the new surroundings. Have patience and understand this is a confusing time.

8) For outdoor cats, keep them inside for a few nights until they get acclimatized. Gradually, allow them to spend more time outside. 9) Enjoy your new home with your pet!

TALKING DOG
This guy sees a sign in front of a house: “Talking Dog for Sale.” He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a black mutt just sitting there. “You talk?” he asks. “Yep,” the mutt replies. “So, what’s your story?” The mutt looks up and says, “Well, I discovered this gift pretty young and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. “I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.” The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. The owner says, “Ten dollars.” The guy says, “This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him, so cheap? The owner replies, “He’s such a liar. He didn’t do any of that stuff.”

These are free at any hardware store and what is nice is usually on one chip you have gradients of colour so creating a piece with the ombre effect is almost done for you. One way I have used this idea is with a scrapbooking punch. I cut my pieces with a heart punch and glued to a plain canvas board. Overlapping and creating layers of the paint chip shapes and shades. These can be arranged in any way but truly give a maximum appeal and unique piece for any room.
Masking tape abstract canvas
This is such an economical and easy way to create a large and dramatic piece for your home. Simple paint your base colour – this is what will show once the tape is removed. In placing the tape this can be as random as possible or taped into a tailored stripe or chevron motif. You can repeat this however many times you want until you get the desired effect, once each layer dries remove the tape – and re-tape to add more colours. The more layered, the more interesting the piece.
