HEALTH BREAKTHROUGHS my favourite – fabulous – fantastic and fun stuff
Science has got to be the most fabulous study of all; scientists figure out the most fantastic problems and come up with solutions, ideas and ingenious breakthroughs. From bionic eyes to medicine-dispensing microchips, here are some of the weird and wonderful innovations that are coming to a doctor’s office near you.
Will blindness be a thing of the past?
COMING IN A DECADE: In just 10 years, blindness may be a thing of the past. Australian researchers are currently developing a microchip to implant in the brains of blind people that, with the help of some high-tech glasses, will restore their sight. The futuristic glasses come equipped with a digital camera, eye-movement sensors, a processor and a wireless transmitter to convey real-time images to the brain. “This device will hopefully work for over 80 % of clinically blind people,” says lead researcher Arthur Lowery.
Kill Cancer Cells With Venom From Rattlesnakes
IN ITS THIRD CLINICAL TRIAL: There is a company in Ireland that has developed a new therapy that kills cancer cells with the venom from South American rattlesnakes. The drug, called Crotoxin significantly reduces the growth of cancer and stops it from spreading.
The Cavity Vaccine
SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE: Dr. Martin Taubman, a professor of developmental biology at Harvard Medical School, is working on a vaccine for cavities. This dental defender could be delivered via nasal spray and works by stimulating the immune system to produce natural antibodies that seek out and block a bacterial enzyme responsible for tooth decay. This is currently awaiting human trials.
Help for people suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease
PRELIMINARY TESTING: Scientists showed that people who have a variant of a longevity gene, called KLOTHO, have improved brain skills such as thinking, learning and memory regardless of their age, sex, or whether they have a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Increasing KLOTHO gene levels in mice made them smarter, possibly by increasing the strength of connections between nerve cells in the brain. The KLOTHO gene provides the blueprint for a protein made primarily by the cells of the kidney, placenta, small intestine, and prostate. A shortened version of the protein can circulate through the blood system The KLOTHO gene "Although preliminary, it could be used to enhance cognition for people suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease."
The anti-sunburn pill made from Coral
IN TESTING: Researchers at King’s College London are tapping into the power of the sea to fight the sun. Coral shields itself from harmful rays by emitting a compound made from algae and modifying it into a protective sunscreen. Scientists observed that fish feeding on the coral are also immune to UV damage, so they’re recreating the compound in pill form. The anti-sunburn pill could provide built-in sun protection for the skin and eyes, potentially improving melanoma rates. Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined and the shocking truth is that one person dies of melanoma every hour (every 57 minutes). Melanoma accounts for less than five percent of skin cancer cases, but the vast majority of skin cancer deaths. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for young people 15-29 years old. A person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns. One or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence more than double a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. Regular daily use of an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen reduces the risk of developing melanoma by 50 percent.
Do Some Research
There are a ton of amazing Medical Breakthroughs you probably had no idea about. Take some time to go on the internet and learn about some of these incredible advances below:
ComputerAssisted Sedation Without an Anesthesiologist
Fighting Paralysis! A new functional electrical stimulation
New Era in Hepatitis C Treatment. The first oral treatment.
A New Treatment for Blood Cancers. B-cell receptor pathway inhibitors
Cluster Headaches Controled With A Remote Control
I could fill the whole magazine with all the exciting scientific breakthroughs, like a scalpel-free brain surgery and technology that enables donor lungs to continue breathing outside the body so they can be repaired before transplant. There is a never-ending list of the scientific technology that sounds like science fiction. Scientists are constantly searching and researching for ways to make all our lives better and healthier; just say a little thank you today for the people out there who could possibly change your life. Do you know someone amazing? Tell us about them on our website!! www.thenewsyneighbour.com Seven months ago, I rejoined the workforce after many years as a stay at home mom. I have met some amazing people. There is one who stands out. He is always ready to throw a compliment to me, other co-workers and his family. This is a very proud gentleman and it sounds rightly so. He is definitely, above all, a “gentleman” and a very dedicated worker. Thank you, Paul, for making my transition back into the work world so pleasant. As you would say, “You’re amazing!” You have said it enough to me, now it’s your turn! ~ Dana 11

The REPs
I love writing the articles for the June Issue for a lot of different reasons; it’s actually starting to feel like winter is finally over, I’m working in the yard, thinking about camping, golfing, BBQ-ing, planting my garden and just enjoying the sunshine on my shoulders. June is such a special month, not to mention Father’s Day which we have gone a little over-board on, with over 10 pages of Dad stuff including “The Ultimate Father’s Day Gift List”, jokes, rib recipes and golf stuff. Now, doesn’t it seem that with something good there always seems to be something bad that goes along with it, and unfortunately that goes for sunshine. Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined and the shocking truth is that one person dies of melanoma every 57 minutes. Melanoma accounts for less than five percent of skin cancer cases, but the vast majority of skin cancer deaths. That’s a very scary statistic. I love the sun and I have burnt myself more times than I want to mention. That is why we have included a very important article from our informative friend Wendy from Shoppers Drug Mart here in Strathmore. Do not skip past this article on page 44; it quite frankly could save your life! And don’t forget our July Issue is going to include the “Business Directory”; you absolutely want to be a part of this. Do you know how many people go through “The Newsy Neighbour” first when they are looking for a business or service? We know our readers support the people who advertise within our pages and this Business Directory will give them your business at their fingertips plus it will be on our website with a direct link to your website – this is genius. We are there for you – readers and advertisers alike – helping towns and people connect – that’s our motto. Happy June – use your sunscreen and be Happy. Kathryn, Aleesha and Denise

Friedrich Nietzsche was a philosopher who died in 1900. He was wrongly accused of supporting anti-Semitism and (indirectly) right wing fascism. He was thought provoking and controversial, but did make some very interesting observations: • It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages. • Those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music. • Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. • If you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you. • In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule. • Distrust all in whom the impulse to punish is powerful. • It is hard enough to remember my opinions, without also remembering my reasons for them! www.thenewsyneighbour.com

I have achieved my grade 10 RCM degree and I strive to climb even further in this field of knowledge. I do enjoy having so many interests and I don’t want to let any of them go. When I have a chance, I take lessons! For example, I am presently working on achieving my ARCT degree on the piano. I’ll always want to strive to be a better, more educated person in the fields that I love.
Rachel Neil - Artist
I have been an artist since I could draw in grade one; I always loved to reproduce the details in the subject I was drawing. I particularly remember one drawing: it was a questionnaire about a story concerning a lizard, and I drew the lizard in the square provided on the paper. It was very realistic with the rough edges reproduced through thicker drawing lines and smudges from my thumb, which no one had ever taught me about. It came to me naturally. But where did I get the talent from? Could it have been my grandfather on my mother’s side? I like to draw lady’s portraits, pet portraits, wild animals, scenery… and I do take commissioned work if you have a clear picture that I can work from. Education wise, I never took art lessons other than the one class that taught me about pointillism, which is the style I use to draw today. I was educated in music for many years; another talent that I actually know where it comes from. My grandmother on my father’s side was a concert pianist, which I strive to achieve as well, but until then, I like to teach reading music and playing the piano.

Crowds, Outhouses & Blood Suckers
I hiked and backpacked into the mountains with an infant son and spent nights under the stars with and without lean-tos. One of my fondest memories of this time is him waking in the sleeping bag with me at Lac des Arcs campground and discovering he was outside. He had gone to bed in his crib and we had just thrown a sleeping bag on the ground when we arrived. His eyes grew 3 sizes and he was gone. He enjoys camping to this day. There are a few other camping stories in my life filled with much laughter, providing fond memories. Stories told around campfires with good friends, relaxing away from it all. Taking time to reflect is a gift we give ourselves. Doing so provides the opportunity to connect or perhaps reconnect with the authentic self, which is at our core. Spending time in nature enables us to disconnect, reset and capture precious moments together. Out there it is all earth and sky, providing the chance to reconnect with the basics in life. Life Tip: Be sure to take lots of pictures as they help spark the memories!

Approximately 25 years ago, I quit going camping. This was probably not a decision of choice but rather of circumstance. I was living in the country on a beautiful acreage and according to my husband, “Why do we need to go someplace where the neighbours will be closer than they are now?” He had done it all with the big motorhome and decided it just wasn’t his thing. Well, that was up until 11 years ago when he went with “the boys” to the Sturgis Bike Rally. Turns out that for 3 to 6 days a year, he likes having his neighbours that close and didn’t mind the noise. So for 10 years he has returned to camp out on the hopefully dry, hot prairie in South Dakota. Definitely something that is not my cup of tea. He has also taken up going camping to ice fish with “the boys” for a weekend the last couple of years. Again, an activity that I am more than happy they enjoy together. My dad wasn’t much of a camper either. I remember a family outing to Elk Island National Park approximately 1 hour east of Edmonton. It is a pretty cool place, as a lot of buffalo roam loose within the park. There was a sense of anticipation about this experience away from the city and not on a farm, which is where we usually spent time visiting the relatives. I wasn’t particularly fond of those times, given the fact that the majority of them still did not have indoor plumbing. Imagine my surprise at discovering the need to use similar facilities and sleeping on the ground – and hard ground at that! We did get to go swimming in the lake, only to come out screaming as we were covered in bloodsuckers. Another first time experience that was fairly gross. After unleaching them from our bodies, our attention was diverted when we were encouraged to collect them in glass jars. Just makes me cringe thinking about it. Anyway, it became the shortest long weekend in history as we returned home after one night. It was monumental, as I don’t remember any other camping excursions with the family. As a Girl Guide, I learned a lot about camping and enjoyed getting out to summer camps to put into practice things we were taught. Then there were some great adventures camping with my best friend, Shelley, after we graduated from high school. We packed up her Austin Mini and hit the road. We learned that it could be dangerous passing the big guys hauling their trailers at the end of a long weekend. They didn’t want to let the girls in the little car pass them.

Dining Taboos From All Over the World That You Should Remember 1) In China, don’t point your chopsticks at people. 2) In China, you should never cut your noodles. Long noodles symbolize long life and cutting your noodles symbolizes, well… short life. 3) In China, keep your dining pace accorded with other people. 4) In China, conventionally, if you are invited to a formal banquet, all the dishes should not be eaten up completely, or you will give the host the impression that he has not provided a good meal and the food was insufficient. After dining, guests should leave once the host has left the table.
In Azerbaijan, do not spill the salt because it means you are about to quarrel.
5) In Chile, don’t eat anything with your hands… ever… not even pizza!
16) In Jamaica, they also believe that eating half an egg will make the child grow into a thief.
6) In Italy, don’t ask for extra cheese. If you do, you may insult the chef’s cooking skills.
17) In Nigeria, people believe that drinking coconut milk will make children unintelligent.
7) In Italy, always politely decline the first offering of food. Upon the inevitable second offering, always accept.
18) In France, do not rush through your meal. It is considered rude.
8) In Tanzania, make sure you show up for dinner 20 minutes late. If you come early, you’ll insult the host. 9) In Russia, empty bottles of vodka should always be placed on the ground. Putting it back on the table is seen as bad luck. 10) In Russia, never lick food off your knife. It is considered extremely rude. 11) In Japan, you should never pass food with chopsticks. They are used to pass bones at cremation funerals and using them to pass food is considered disrespectful. 12) In Japan, never leave chopsticks vertically in your food at a restaurant. This is typically done as an offering to the dead by families at home, but in a restaurant it is seen as cursing the owner. 13) In the UK, you should always tilt a bowl of soup away from you. You should spoon the soup away from you as well. 14) In Indonesia, you should keep both hands on the table at all times. 15) In Jamaica, people believe that if children eat chicken before they can speak, they will never talk. So don’t feed chicken to babies.
19) In France, do not leave food on your plate or ask for a box. This implies that you did not enjoy the meal. 20) In France, you should never split a bill. Either pay the whole thing or pay nothing. Anything else is considered unsophisticated. 21) In Afghanistan and throughout the Muslim world, eat your food with your right hand, not your left. The left hand is reserved for bathroom hygiene, so using it for eating is considered unclean. 22) In Germany, the only acceptable food to be eaten with fingers is bread. 23) In Kazakhstan, you will be served tea, but only half of a cup. Don’t ask for more because a full cup means that the host wants you to leave. 24) In Azerbaijan, do not spill the salt because it means you are about to quarrel. Sugar is usually sprinkled on the salt to counter this. 25) In Egypt, don’t even pick up the salt shaker. It will insult the chef. 26) In Estonia, make sure you kiss any bread that falls on the ground before throwing it away. 27) In South Korea, when you drink something, turn your head and look away. 28) In Korea, don’t start eating until the oldest person at the table starts. 29) In Papua New Guinea, women in the middle of their menstrual cycles are not allowed fresh meat, juicy bananas or any red coloured fruits.
In Japan, never leave chopsticks vertically in your food at a restaurant.
30) In the United States, it’s illegal to eat watermelon in public parks within Beech Grove, Indiana. 31) In the United States, in Gainesvilla, Georgia, it’s illegal to eat fried chicken with anything but your bare hands. Chiropractic Mythbusters
There are many misconceptions in regards to chiropractic care. Here we discuss just a couple of them. 1) You must feel pain if a bone is “out of place”. False! The truth is that it is rare for a bone to be really out of place but more often the case is that the joint is just not moving through the normal range of motion and may be stuck “out” of a neutral position. When this occurs, the nerve endings and spinal nerves in the area get irritated and can lead to improper messages being sent through the nervous system. What most people don’t know is that only about 10% of your nerves are involved in carrying pain sensations. That means that there are a lot of important messages being relayed that you can’t feel. When your nerves are irritated, the functions of the cells, tissue and organs that are controlled by that nerve start to malfunction. Over time, this can lead to many problems such as a weak immune system, high blood pressure, fatigue, insomnia, poor balance, muscle tension and sometimes pain (headaches, sciatica, back pain, etc.). If you have any health concerns, not just pain, a chiropractor may be able to help you. 2) Once you go to a chiropractor you have to go for life. False! Most chiropractors have different care plans depending on the goals of the patient. Relief care involves only a few adjustments to reduce the pain and/or symptoms. This is usually just a temporary solution because the pain is the first thing to go away while the problem is usually still lingering. Corrective care involves more visits and usually exercises/stretches outside the chiropractors’ clinic. This goes past the pain relief stage to help stabilize the injured/problem area. Wellness care is a lifelong plan where you see the chiropractor regularly to maintain wellness and prevent future problems. Every patient gets to choose how long they benefit from chiropractic care but keep in mind that your chiropractor will make recommendations for care that will give you the best outcome possible as they are looking out for your overall wellness.

Put a 1.5 pound package of chicken thighs into a foil-lined, oven-proof baking dish. Then, salt and pepper the thighs. Pour your maple mustard mixture over them, turning the thighs in the mixture so they are fully coated. Put the chicken thighs into the oven, and let them bake for 40 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads 165ºF. Baste the tops of the chicken with more sauce half way through. I find that a meat thermometer is essential in cooking because it allows me to check for doneness without cutting into the meat and losing its precious juices. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving. Plate the chicken, making sure to spoon some extra sauce over the top. Sprinkle over some fresh rosemary. If there is ever a time to use fresh herbs, THIS IS IT! The flavours are just so good together. Enjoy the savory goodness of this meal!

Happy Father’s Day, Gentlemen!
SPINNING THE YARN Stories, musings, a little adventure and humour with Suzanne Shaver Suzanne is a native Calgarian that lived in Langdon for 15 years before transplanting to Chestermere in 2013. By day she is an accountant with a frustrated creative side that occasionally escapes in form of written musings, which is far more interesting than adding stuff up for people. June - the month we honour dads everywhere with bad ties and other manly gifts. Coincidently, it’s also the start of semi-reasonable weather for golfing, camping and other manly outdoor pursuits. (And thanks for giving moms the wacky weather month, guys…) Growing up, Father’s Day was always a dilemma in my world. Most of the year I was blessed with the gift of two great dads (“real” and “step”… not the “modern” take on two dads) but Father’s Day meant I had to come up with TWO great gift ideas. One stretched my limited imagination, but two? My step-dad was actually pretty easy; not only did he have a couple of hobbies that spawned gift ideas, but he golfed. Golf balls, golf shirts, golf books, golf tees, golf towels… you get the idea, no imagination really required here. As the gift budget graduated from “spare allowance money” to “real job adult money” one could just up the ante on golf stuff with golf course gift certificates, golf trips, whatever. My dad was a whole other ball game. And had he played ball, or any sport for that matter, he would have made my life easier. He sub-

scribed to the “why ruin a perfectly good walk” theory when it came to golf; not that he actually felt that walking was a great recreational idea either, but you get the idea. Not a sporty man, my dad. He was also not “BBQ King” dad; he was dad that already owned every tool known to man or daughter; he believed camping involved a motorhome, travel to the US and a spot that had all the appeal of a grocery store parking lot with full hookups. And I’m not sure, frankly, if he even owns a tie. I’m assuming yes, as surely he’s had to go to the odd funeral over the years and he did manage to get married twice but I’m not sure I’ve got pictorial evidence of such. My “eureka” moment regarding Father’s Day and dear old impossible-to-buy for dad came as an adult; the result of a whiney conversation with a co-worker about the problem. His suggestion? Weird beer. Not the funky “sat outside too long and some lush friend probably used it as an ashtray anyhow” weird beer. Weird as in “beer the average liquor store probably doesn’t carry” weird. In short, find any kind of unusual beer – packaging, country, name, whatever – and buy a variety of single bottles (weird beer is sold by the bottle. Who knew?!), wrap them up in an interesting way and presto! Happy dad! Call me unimaginative (like I don’t know… my kids’ one and only fish was name “Fish”, for crying out loud), but it’s been my go-to gift ever since and I pass it on to you. You’re welcome. Unless dad doesn’t drink, in which case go do more pooper-scooping, since you probably didn’t follow my recommendation for Mother’s Day. Happy Father’s Day, gentlemen. (FYI - don’t drink all your weird beer in one sitting, nothing good comes of that. Trust me).

LUSCIOUS JOYS
MEN LOVE RIBS There is absolutely nothing more luscious than the perfect BBQ rib recipe. I have found the trick to cooking any rib, be it pork or beef, the trick is to cook them low and slow. These recipes are my #1 favourite when I’m in the mood for ribs and this is the perfect meal to prepare for dad on Father’s Day.
Dad’s Favourite Bbq Ribs
4 lbs. pork ribs 3/4 cup light brown sugar 1 tsp steak spice 1 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp garlic powder 2 cups of your favourite barbecue sauce Preheat oven to 300°F. Peel off tough membrane that covers the bony side of the ribs. Mix together the sugar and spices to make the rub. Apply rub to ribs on all sides. Place ribs on a cookie sheet lined with foil, shiny side out and meaty side down. Place foil on top of ribs and seal. Bake for 2-2 1/2 hours. Remove from oven. Preheat your broiler, cut ribs into serving sized portions of 2 or 3 ribs. Arrange on broiler pan, bony side up. Brush on sauce. Broil for 1 or 2 minutes until sauce is cooked on and bubbly. Turn ribs over. Repeat on other side. Alternately, you can grill the ribs on your grill to cook on the sauce.
Maple Garlic Ribs 4 lbs. pork spareribs ½ cup maple syrup ¼ cup soy sauce ¼ cup white vinegar 2 cloves, minced garlic 2 tbsp brown sugar 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp garlic salt 22
Preheat oven to 350°F. Slice ribs into serving sized pieces. In a large bowl combine the syrup, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic and brown sugar. Stir until dissolved, and then stir in baking soda. The mixture will begin to foam – add ribs and turn to coat. Place on a cookie sheet lined with foil and arrange meat side up. Pour excess sauce over ribs and sprinkle with garlic salt. Bake for 1 hour, turning every 20 minutes.
Kansas City Ribs
3 pounds pork spareribs For Sauce: For Rub: 1 cup ketchup 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup paprika 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 tbsp black pepper 1/4 cup vinegar 1 tbsp salt 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp chili powder 2 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp garlic powder 1 tbsp chili powder 1 tbsp onion powder 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp cayenne 1 teaspoon cayenne Prepare ribs by removing the membrane from the underside of the ribs. Trim off any loose fat or meat. Prepare smoker or grill. You will want to hold a temperature around 200°F for 4 to 6 hours, so plan accordingly. Season with Kansas City rib rub and place on grill or in smoker. While ribs are cooking, prepare barbecue sauce. Heat oil in a saucepan. Add garlic and sauté until brown. Add remaining ingredients and reduce heat. Simmer for 15 minutes until thick. Cook ribs until the internal temperature of the meat reaches about 145°F. Brush with barbecue sauce continually during cooking process. By Derrick Riches Remember, “Anything worth doing is worth doing slowly.” Mae West Kathryn Hartwell www.thenewsyneighbour.com

A Special Gift for Dad My dad is one of the important people in my life. I want him to be happy and healthy, so I am going to do something special for him this Father’s Day through the gift of reflexology, or foot massage. He has been working really hard and deserves some relief from many long and stressful days. I may present him with a gift card or just get him to sit back and relax while l give him a foot massage. Either way, he will enjoy the many benefits of reflexology and massage. The men in your life might not be aware of how much reflexology will reduce their stress level and subsequently help improve their sleep. I know my dad suffers from stress symptoms like headaches, body aches or he just cannot concentrate; so a foot massage will be like a reset button to get things back on track. It will also improve his blood and lymph circulation; these two systems bring nutrients and oxygen to the body, reduce inflammation and help in the process of waste removal. Whether through reflexology or foot massage, it will feel good to provide the gift of a treatment to help my dad feel his best.
Family photos for Father’s Day? 1. Hire a professional photographer to get your family photos done and soon. Life is too short. Don’t miss the opportunity to get photos of your family together 2. Take advantage of mini sessions any time they are offered. 3. Make it your personal goal to get your family photos taken at least once a year. 4. Book it ahead of time. A lot of the good photographers can book up very quickly throughout the year. 5. Take time to pick out your outfits. Proper clothing coordination is critical for a successful family portrait. The goal is for all clothing items to coordinate together, just like when you put together your own outfit. 7. Remember, this is an investment. Family photos are so important to have, and you won’t regret spending the money to capture our family together 8. If you’re the one who always takes the snapshots in your family, chances are there are not many photos of you around the house or in your photo albums. Getting a professional photographer is important so that there are photos of you! Your family loves you and wants to remember moments in life with you being here!

The ULTIMATE Father’s Day List!
Last month I spend hours combing through sites to compile the Ultimate Gift List for Mother’s Day, so I thought it was only fair to make the Ultimate List for dear old dad for Father’s Day! This was not easy; let me tell you: dads want way, WAY different gifts than moms. Truthfully, only a couple of the gifts actually work for both moms and dads!!! Take your dad out to the movies. You do not have to spend money to give dad a great gift – if you washed, vacuumed and cleaned his car he would be so happy. This is a big job. Or, you could spend a lot of money and get him a hot tub from Empress Hot Tubs. See their ad on page 27.
Get all your dad’s friends together for a Saturday of pool and beer. Make sure to call Strathmore Taxi for your safe ride home. See their ad on page 35.
Send your dad a text message telling him why you love him. Get him a gift certificate for a haircut from Tangles. See their ad on page 9. Grab a picture of you and your dad when you were a child and one of you both as adults. Put it in a frame and personalize it. Get all the supplies from The General Store. See their ad on page 23. Rent his favourite movie and grab an assortment of munchies. Make him a really cool BBQ apron and hat. You can get them personalized with screen printing & embroidery from Chimp Embroidery. See their ad on page 61.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
Buy him a round of golf at Lakeside Greens Golf Course on page 29, Akokiniskway Golf Course on page 30 or Oxbow Golf Course on page 31. How about a new driver for his golf game? Lakeside Greens has a fully stocked Pro Shop. Akokiniskway Golf Course carries all the necessities and Oxbow also has a Pro Shop you will want to check out. Take your dad out for dinner (make sure you make reservations!). Try some delicious East Indian Cuisine from Masala Hub. See their ad on page 27.
Take your Dad fishing.
Get him a remote control anything, like an airplane or vehicle.
How about a Swiss Army knife? Pretty much anything from Home Hardware makes a good Father’s Day Gift. See their ad on page 21. Get a photo shoot done of all the kids (and grandkids). This is an amazing gift. Nothing beats a lasting memory. Amanda Lesley Photography will capture the perfect memory for you. See ad on page 23.
Order your dad’s favourite takeout. From Taco Time, of course. See their ad on page 6. Cook his favourite dinner at home. Get fresh made buns from Botsford Delicatessen (page 9) and get the chicken to BBQ from Country Lane Farms (page 16). Mow the lawn and clean out the flower beds, then plant the new flowers you bought from Garden Scents. See their ad on page 50 Men like massages, too! Get dad a gift certificate for a relaxing

How about a new pair of shades? Shoppers Drug Mart carries an assortment of shades. See ad on page 44.
Get him a bottle of his favourite cologne from Shoppers Drug Mart. See ad on page 44. Take dad to a sporting event – any sporting event; they all are fun. Go biking with dad – he will love the time you spend together.
Take your dad camping. Akokiniskway Golf Course (page 30) has beautiful treed sites, and Alpine Rafting (page 27) offers free riverside camping all summer long.
Get the windows tinted on his favourite vehicle. Or maybe the windows on his house to save him some money on cooling costs this summer. Sunsoft Window Films has lots of ideas. See their ad on page 15. Help dad clean the garage or do chores around the house (just not on Father’s Day). Give him a homemade card with a rain cheque. Make dad happy by cleaning all the carpets in the house with Carpet Cop. See their ad on page 59. Take dad Go-Karting!! Shakers Family Fun Centre has an awesome Go Kart track. See their ad on page 47. What dad doesn’t love the smell of fresh cut grass and the powerful engine that cut it? Get him a Grasshopper or RZT! Make sure to buy it from Clark’s Supply (page 49) and Wenstrom Equipment (page 50), respectively. Get dad’s vehicle inspected to make sure he’s safe and sound on the road! Check out County Auto Repair (page 35) and PHD Automotive (page 33). How about a patio cover for dad to sit under and enjoy a cool, refreshing beverage? The only place to call is Natural Light Patio Covers (page 11). Make sure you get dad some fancy shmancy power tools from Lar-Don Rentals (page 50). Sign up for a club or class with Dad, or just start working out together. Anytime Fitness in Strathmore is a 24 hour gym. See their ad on page 5. Make a photo bookmark. Buy all the supplies at The General Store. See their ad on page 23. Take him on a wild adventure and go white water rafting with Alpine Rafting. See their ad on page 27.
There are so many other good ideas that you yourself can think of because only you know your father the best! I’m sure if you put your thinking hat on you will pick the perfect gift for your father on his special day.
And remember, a good father makes all the difference in your life; he is your pillar of strength, support and discipline. His work is endless and, oftentimes, thankless. This Father’s Day, take the time to appreciate your dear old dad. Kathryn Hartwell

Torn Dear Lifelines; For Father’s Day last year, I just didn’t know what to do for my step-dad. I usually spend the day with my dad and we do things together, but I always feel bad that I’m leaving my step-dad out. What can I do? Torn between two fathers Dear Torn, The fact that you are concerned with this issue shows that you are sensitive to the needs of your dads. It sounds like you really want to be fair about how you spend your time acknowledging them both. The great thing about your fathers is that they are both really unique individuals with different interests and needs. Remember that it’s not your responsibility to make everyone happy. It’s not fair to place that kind of pressure on yourself, or for anyone else to place that burden upon you.

You might want to take some time and figure out what you can do with each of them or for each of them to acknowledge that you care about them. You might want to do a special project with them like build a birdhouse or take golf lessons together. You could also purchase something for them like Father’s Day cards personalized for both dads and step-dads; you could write some thoughtful words about what makes them special to you. Because each person is different, you can make it as individual as they are. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to make people feel special – time and some focused thinking can make a special gift come together. Try not to get caught up on making things too equal or too perfect because that takes the fun out of the project. If you have to acknowledge your dads on different days – that’s ok! So think about what makes your dads excited – is it relaxing in front of the TV, spending time on the lake, cooking, gardening, playing sports, travelling, doing crafts or woodworking? Try to focus on a theme and see where it takes you! Good Luck and Happy Father’s Day!! Lifelines

Jokes To Make Dad Laugh A Spanish captain was walking on his ship when a soldier rushes to him and exclaims, “An enemy ship is approaching us!” The captain replies calmly, “Go get my red shirt.” The soldier ran and got the shirt for the captain. The enemy ship comes in and heavy rounds of fire are exchanged. Finally, the Spaniards win. The soldier asks, “Congrats sir, but why the red shirt?” The captain replies, “If I got injured, my blood shouldn’t be seen, as I didn’t want my men to lose hope.” Just then, another soldier runs up and says, “Sir, we just spotted another twenty enemy ships!” The captain calmly replies, “Bring me my yellow pants.” Q: How many politicians does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two; one to change it and another one to change it back again. How many snowboarders does it take to screw in a light bulb? 50; 3 to die trying, 1 to actually pull it off, and 46 other to say, “Man, I could do that!”
Teacher (on phone): You say Michael has a cold and can’t come to school today? To whom am I speaking? Voice: This is my father. Q: Who earns a living by driving his customers away? A: A taxi driver. Did you hear about the two bed bugs that met in the mattress? They were married in the spring. A mom and a son come home from the grocery store. The boy immediately empties out a box of animal crackers and the mom asks him why. The boy says, “You should not eat it if the seal is broken, so I’m looking for the seal.”
Mike was still deep in his routine, seemingly impervious to the interruption. Again, the announcement: “Would the man on the women’s tee kindly back up the men’s tee?” Mike had had enough. He shouted, “Would the announcer in the clubhouse kindly shut up and let me play my second shot?!” “Dad, are bugs good to eat?” asked the boy. “Let’s not talk about such things at the dinner table, son,” his father replied. P laying your first round of golf can be intimidating. Will you know how to act on a golf course? Do you know the rules? Here’s a quick primer - 10 basic rules of etiquette - that can help make your first round of golf go easier.
1. Equipment
Taking the right equipment to the course involves both rules and etiquette. The rules place a limit of 14 clubs in each golfer’s bag. There is no minimum number of clubs you must have, but borrowing clubs from your partners is not a good idea. Borrowing clubs during a round is permissible under certain circumstances, but it is against the rules in most. Make sure you have plenty of tees and, most importantly, plenty of golf balls. After all, if it’s your first time out, you’ll probably be losing a lot of golf balls!
2. Make a Tee Time – Then be on time.
Once your group has reserved a tee time, say, 10:14 a.m., it’s really nice to actually make the tee time. Plan to get to the golf course at least 30 minutes early, just to be safe. If a tee time is missed, your group might lose its spot and have to wait around for another opening, which can take hours on a busy day.
3. Dress the Part
Many golf courses have dress codes. Find out what the dress code is at the course you’re playing and dress appropriately. A pair of khaki shorts or slacks and a collared golf shirt will almost always meet the requirements. Golf shoes are not always required, and golf gloves are always up to the golfer, but both are good things to have and use.
4. Teeing Off
On the teeing ground, you must place your ball between the tee markers, either even with them or up to two club lengths behind them. Never in front of them.
5. Honours, Away and Ready Play
THE 10 BASIC RULES OF GOLF 28
The player who has “honours” plays first from the teeing ground. On the first tee, this can be decided randomly (draw straws, play paperrock-scissors, whatever). On ensuing tees, the player with the best score on the preceding hole goes first, the second-best score goes second, and so on. Ties carry over to the next tee box, so you keep your place in the rotation until you beat someone on a hole. “Honours” determines who tees off first; what about the order of play on shots from the fairway? The player who is farthest from the hole always plays first. The exception is when all members of the group have agreed to play “ready golf,” meaning hit-when-ready.
6. Play It As It Lies
One of the most fundamental principles of golf is “play it as it lies.” What that means is pretty simple - don’t move or touch the ball! Where it comes to rest, whatever state it is in, you most likely have to play it as is. Don’t move the ball, don’t touch it, and don’t pick it up unless you are certain that you are allowed to do so under the Rules.
7. Out of Bounds & Lost Balls
Out of bounds should be clearly marked around the golf course, usually through the use of white stakes or white lines. The penalty for out of bounds is stroke-plus-distance; that is, add one stroke to your score, then go back to where you hit the shot from and hit it again. Of course, that takes time. At busy golf courses, you won’t have that time because there is likely to be a group behind yours waiting to play. So when you think you’ve hit a ball out of bounds, you’ll need to play a second www.thenewsyneighbour.com

ball (called a “provisional ball”) off the tee so you won’t have to retrace your steps if the first ball really is out of bounds. Make sure to announce to your playing partners that you are hitting a provisional, then re-tee after everyone else has hit and play your provisional tee ball. If you find your first ball and it is actually in bounds, then you play the first ball. If you can’t find your first ball, or find it out of bounds, then play your provisional ball (in which case your provisional ball off the tee counts as your third stroke, so your next shot will be your fourth). The same applies to lost balls. If your shot goes deep into the woods, the penalty for a lost ball is stroke-plus-distance, so hit a provisional.
8. Keep Up the Pace
Slow play has always been an issue on golf courses, and it’s even more important as a beginner to be aware of your pace of play. You don’t want to keep golfers behind you waiting, just as you probably don’t want to be kept waiting yourself by slow groups ahead. Always be prepared to play when it is your turn to hit. If your group is slower than the group immediately behind yours, if your group is holding up another group, it’s good etiquette to allow the faster group to play through. Not all groups will want to do this, but many will, and all that do will be very grateful for your show of etiquette.
9. Water Hazards
Water hazards should be clearly marked on golf courses. Yellow stakes or lines indicate a water hazard. You can try to play a ball that is in the water, but that’s generally a bad idea. Instead, take a 1-stroke penalty and drop a ball at any point behind the spot www.thenewsyneighbour.com
www.lakesidegreens.com info@lakesidegreens.com
where your original ball crossed into the water hazard, but on the same line of play.
10. Course Care and Safety
Golf courses are there to be enjoyed by all golfers, so part of your responsibility is taking care of the course while you are on it. If you are using a golf cart, always observe the posted cart rules. Even better, a good idea is to keep the cart on the cart paths at all times (carts damage the grass). Always repair your ball marks (also called pitch marks) on the green. Always repair your divots in the fairway. Always rake sand bunkers after you’ve hit your shot to smooth out the sand so that ensuing golfers don’t have to play out of your footprints. And always be aware of other golfers on the course. Don’t play your shot until the group ahead is out of range. Now go have some fun out there and make this the year you take up golfing!
Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated. It satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without question the greatest game mankind has ever invented. ~ Arnold Palmer 29
Known truths about golf
Golf Did You Know
• Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water. • Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man. • A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent -- or some similar combination. • All 3-woods are demon-possessed. • Golf balls from the same “sleeve” tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water. • A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty. • The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be.
Two golfers are at the first tee: Golfer one: “Hey, guess what! I got a set of golf clubs for my wife!” Golfer two: “Great trade!!”

GOLF: The art of playing fetch with yourself.
I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone’s game: it’s called an eraser. ~ Arnold Palmer Two blonde golfers in Ireland were on a very foggy par 3. They could see the top of the flag but not the green. “Not to worry,” their caddies said; they will watch. So, off they went. When they reached the green and looked around, they found one ball 2 feet from the hole, the other in the hole. The Caddies asked what ball they were using as they were unsure which one had holed out, and both said they were using Top-Flite 2 balls. All decided the only way to find a solution was to talk to the Pro. After hearing the story, seeing the balls, congratulating them for their great shots, he asked the caddies, “OK, now which of them was using the orange ball?”
Golf is a nice relaxing way to get really frustrated and super disappointed in yourself.

Are you ready for some football?
Jocktalk
As I write this article in advance of my June deadline, my fingers are crossed that cooler heads will prevail and the CFL season will start without any labour disruptions.
“We’ll be a much improved football team this year”
Last November, the Calgary Stampeders were derailed by the Grey Cup Champion Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the West Final. The only thing potentially stopping John Hufnagel’s charge this season is the CBA!
“We’ll be a much improved football team this year,” boasts the head coach and GM. A bold prediction indeed considering Hufnagel guided the Stamps to a league best 14 - 4 regular season in 2013. Making bold and unexpected moves is how you could define Hufnagel’s 6 year reign in Calgary. While this has resulted in great regular season success for the organization, the same can’t be said about the post season. This lack of post season success is what drives Hufnagel heading into the 2014 season. The boldest move of the off season was dealing starting guard Jon Gott to the expansion Ottawa Redblacks for the number one pick overall in the CFL draft. While Laval center Pierre Lavertu may turn out to a great player in this league, the Stamps gave up the proven commodity and the best player right now. Adding to the line’s uncer32
tainly was the retirement of Dimitri Tsoumpas, the team’s best offensive lineman, and the loss of J’Micheal Deane in the expansion draft. Obviously this means the Stampeders will have a revamped line in 2014 and a great battle in training camp between the likes of Lavertu, Brander Craighead, Brad Erlos, Billy Peach, Shane Bergman and Spencer Wilson. Peach, Bergman and Wilson may have a slight edge because of their experience, however Craighead was the team’s number one pick last year while Erlos was a top pick in 2012. Veteran imports Stanley Bryant and Edwin Harrison will also be challenged by rookie Korian Chambers out of New Mexico. In a perfect world, the Stamps would like to start just one import on the offensive line.
The best battle in training camp will be between Drew Tate and Bo Levi Mitchell. “It’s an open competition,” says Hufnagel. “I am very confident we will see a lot of both quarterbacks during the season.” The coach is also confident with the new number three guy in Adrian Macpherson. While Tate may be penciled in as number one on the depth chart his health is still a major concern. “My elbow is still not a hundred percent and may never be,” he told us on Sportstalk. “However, I have been throwing the ball really well and I just have to adjust to the discomfort.” Another battle to watch in training camp is the secondary. Three starters from last year’s West Final are no longer with the team. Safety Eric Fraser was scooped up in the expansion draft by Ottawa. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Corner Chris Randle wanted to test the free agent market so he was traded to Winnipeg and halfback Derrius Brooks signed an NFL tryout with the Saints. Free agent Joshua Bell was signed to fill one of the voids while the team also picked up Dee Webb in a trade with the Tiger Cats. The Stamps are hoping newcomers Otis Merrill, Ryan Steed, Jeremy Williams and Buddy Jackson will make for a stiff competition. All four of those players had NFL tryouts. The wildcard for the Calgary Stampeders is how will the veterans rebound from serious injuries? Nik Lewis says he is good to go after breaking his fibula last August and he will be motivated as he is entering the option year of his contract. Marquay McDaniel had a career year for the Red and White but he was hurt in the last game of the regular season. With the likes of Mo Price, Jeff Fuller, Tim Hawthorne and Joe West this team is loaded with import receivers. It’s going to be very difficult to keep them all.

kicks, if it’s giving Jon Cornish a breather, whatever I can do to help the team - I just want to win a Grey Cup. That’s the main goal.” Sanders won a Grey Cup last year with the Riders and while he could also assist the CFL’s leading rusher by giving him the odd breather, the Stamps are more excited about his receiving abilities. “Jock has great hands,” says Hufnagel. “He will give us a lot of different looks on offense and he is a very good returner.” Yes it was a season of change for the Calgary Stampeders and only time will tell if Hufnagel’s bold prediction will actually come true. Just being better isn’t good enough. It’s time this team wins another championship. About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for over 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on News Talk 770 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Stamps lost rush end Cordarro Law to the NFL and that will hurt. Demonte Bolden, Micah Johnson and Cory Mace are all coming off serious injuries. Kory Sheets exploited the interior of that defensive line in the West Final and new defensive coordinator Rich Stubler is counting on those players to come back strong. If they don’t, it could be a very long season.
“If it’s returning kicks, if it’s giving Jon Cornish a breather, whatever I can do to help the team - I just want to win a Grey Cup. That’s the main goal,” says Mallet. The new turf at aging McMahon Stadium will help. While no one in the organization is actually on record as saying the old turf is the reason this team has been drilled by the injury bug over the last three seasons. There is no one disappointed to see the old carpet go! The Stamps are hoping for an upgrade in their return game. Larry Taylor was traded to the Montreal Alouettes in the off season. He will be replaced by Martell Mallet or Jock Sanders. Mallet was the CFL’s rookie of the year in 2009. “I’m a team player and I’m an athlete.” says Mallet. “If it’s returning www.thenewsyneighbour.com

is unsure of the outcome. Note that a shotgun has only 2 barrels so a reload can only be called once.
The Official Rules for Calling Shotgun.
1. The shotgunner must be in clear sight of the car, and shotgun can be called regardless of whether the driver is in sight of the car or not. 2. If you are the first to be picked up on a journey, you are automatically given shotgun. You retain this position for the entire journey, unless you violate rules 11, 16, 22 or any other rules stipulating the loss of shotgun. 3. You cannot declare shotgun if someone has previously declared shotgun for that journey. 4. When simultaneous shotgun is called, there is then a foot race to the passenger side door from all the people who called. 5. Shotgun cannot be called whilst inside a building (unless you are in a multi-storey or underground car park!). 6. Shotgun cannot be called in advance, only whilst on the way to the car for the journey. 7. Once shotgun has been called, the driver has the option of a reload. The driver yells “reload” and this means that all previous calls of shotgun are void and the first person to call shotgun again gets the seat. This is helpful if the driver really doesn’t like the person who first called shotgun. It is often used when there is a simultaneous call and the driver 34
8. Once shotgun has been called for the front seat, then back left and back right can be called. This effectively leaves the slowest person to travel in the middle seat. 9. Because everyone is created equal, men have the same right to the front seat of the car as women (i.e. women don’t own the front seat!). 10. If the regular driver of the vehicle is drunk or otherwise unable to perform their duties as driver, then he/she is automatically given shotgun. 11. Once the journey has begun, the driver is the obvious controller of the tunes. However, if they feel the road requires their full attention, or they simply cannot be arsed any more, duty is passed to the shotgunner. However, putting on bad music or allowing for silence when the iPod finishes a song will result in demotion. 12. Anyone calling shotgun must have his or her shoes on. This is to stop people running outside and calling shotgun, then having to go back inside to put their shoes on and slowing the journey. This is known as the Shoe Rule. 13. Shotgun overrules Dibs, Baggsies and other girly calls! 14. Despite the debate, shotgun CAN be used to shotgun things other than the front seat (i.e., back left, back right, women, not going to answer the door, etc). 15. When traveling with a couple, one of the couple MUST shotgun the front. No one wants to chauffer two of their mates whilst they are in the back all over each other. 16. If someone has successfully called shotgun, they have the right to the front seat. They do not have the right to correct the driver on their navigation skills (“Take a left here, idiot!”) or driving ability (“I’d be in third gear if I was driving”). then they forfeit their position as shotgun holder. 17. If someone says, “What’s shotgun?” after it has been called, they have to walk. 18. If the shotgunner attempts to open the door just as the driver is unlocking it and jams the lock half open so that the driver needs to lock it and unlock it again, the shotgunner forfeits their position. This is known as Shotgun Suicide. 19. The holder of shotgun assumes the responsibility for all gate opening, off license nipping into, takeaway ordering and question asking. He/ she is, in essence, the co-pilot and therefore the enforcer of behaviour in the vehicle and exacter of slaps/punches/water spraying/bag throwing at the passengers in the back. 20. Automatic “couple’s rights act 1997” law states that, if the driver is the boyfriend/girlfriend of a passenger in the car, this person has the right to the seat of their choice. 21. If one of the potential occupants of the vehicle is dressed (convincingly) as a pirate, then they are given automatic shotgun. In the event of more than one pirate being present, a sword fight shall determine the successful shotgunner. This is known as The Pirate Rule. 22. When driving past a woman walking a dog, everyone in the car must shout out the window, “Who’s walking who?” It is the shotgunner’s responsibility and failure to spot potential heckling, results in demotion. Frankincense
F rankincense is a mighty and powerful oil. Many of you may have heard the story about baby Jesus and the three gifts the Wiseman brought him; these gifts were Frankincense, Gold and Myrrh. What many may not know, is that during this time, and for quite some time afterwards, Frankincense was actually more valuable than gold due to its phenomenal healing properties. It was an oil that was “used to treat every conceivable illness known to man” and was only possessed by those with great wealth and abundance. Frankincense is also considered the “holy anointing oil” in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. This antitumoral, immunostimulant, antidepressant and muscle relaxing oil is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from 16th century B.C.), an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.
INDEPENDENT DISTRIBUTOR

My Juicing Quotidian uicing has become one of my passions. For years, I juiced every single morning and then I kind of got away from it for a while – I don’t know why; these things happen. It’s just like using my treadmill every day and just slowly slipping away from that too. I started Yoga and did it faithfully for weeks and then once again I just seem to not get to it as often; sometimes three or four times a week and sometimes just once or twice. I don’t think this is uncommon behavior; we start with the best intentions and then, like some unknown force of the universe, there seems to be mysterious events and roadblocks put in our way that distract us and throw us off track from sticking with our goals. I’m sure there is a universal name for this phenomenon.

Well, I’m trying to get back on track with my health plan and I have been juicing religiously every single day. I remember why I started juicing; I was trying to quit smoking – which I have now for just about a year (the biggest challenge of my entire life). Then I had an idea: why don’t I share my juicing regime and the benefits of each element involved? Now that I’ve just finished this 11 page composition, it has truthfully re-enforced why I take the time to juice. As I did the research on each fruit and vegetable, the turmeric, oregano oil and Himalayan pink salt and the vitamins I take with my juice, I really started feeling good about what I am doing for my body. I really, really wanted to share all this knowledge with you. Even if you don’t want to juice you can still walk away with some great information on the ingredients and if you have just one single moment of sudden realization or inspiration, then the hours of research I have put into this article will all be worth it. Sometimes, just one small step is all it takes to change an entire life! FIRST, I DO THIS:
3 LARGE CARROTS, 1 STALK CELERY, ½ BEET, ½ LEMON, 1 FULL GRAPEFRUIT, 1 ½” FRESH GINGER ROOT, ½ RED, ORANGE OR YELLOW BELL PEPPER, HANDFULL OF KALE, SPINACH AND PARSLEY THREE CARROTS: They are so good for your body’s overall health, especially that of the skin, eyes, digestive system and teeth! 1. Beta carotene: Carrots are a rich source of this powerful antioxidant,

which, among other vital uses, can be converted into vitamin A in the body to help maintain healthy skin. 2. Digestion: Carrots increase saliva and supply essential minerals, vitamins and enzymes that aid in digestion. Eating carrots regularly may help prevent gastric ulcers and other digestive disorders. 3. Alkaline elements: Carrots are rich in alkaline elements, which purify and revitalize the blood while balancing the acid/alkaline ratio of the body. 4. Potassium: Carrots are a good source of potassium, which can help maintain healthy sodium levels in the body, thereby helping to reduce elevated blood pressure levels. 5. Dental Health: Carrots kill harmful germs in the mouth and help prevent tooth decay. 6. Wounds: Raw or grated carrots can be used to help heal wounds, cuts and inflammation. 7. Phytonutrients: Among the many beneficial phytochemicals that carrots contain is a phytonutrient called falcarinol, which may reduce the risk of colon cancer and help promote overall colon health. 8. Carotenoids: Carrots are rich in carotenoids, which our bodies can use to help regulate blood sugar. 9. Fibre: Carrots are high in soluble fibre, which may reduce cholesterol by binding the LDL form (the kind we don’t want) and increasing the HDL form (the kind our body needs) to help reduce blood clots and prevent heart disease. 10. Eyes, hair, nails and more! The nutrients in carrots can improve the health of your eyes, skin, hair, nails and more through helping to detoxify your system and build new cells! ONE GRAPEFRUIT: Cut in half and cut off the peel. 1. Grapefruit is an excellent source of vitamin C, a vitamin that helps to support the immune system. 2. The rich pink and red colours of grapefruit are due to lycopene, a carotenoid phytonutrient. (PLEASE NOTE: Lycopene is only found in pink and red grapefruit. White grapefruit does not provide this carotenoid.) Lycopene appears to have anti-tumour activity. Among the common dietary carotenoids, lycopene has the highest capacity to help fight oxygen free radicals, which are compounds that can dam-
age cells. 3. Phytonutrients in grapefruit called limonoids inhibit tumour formation by promoting the formation of glutathione-S-transferase, a detoxifying enzyme. This enzyme sparks a reaction in the liver that helps to make toxic compounds more water soluble for excretion from the body. Pulp of citrus fruits like grapefruit contain glucarates, compounds that may help prevent breast cancer. 4. Grapefruit contains pectin, a form of soluble fibre that has been shown in animal studies to slow down the progression of atherosclerosis. In one study, animals fed a high-cholesterol diet plus grapefruit pectin had 24% narrowing of their arteries, while animals fed the highcholesterol diet without grapefruit pectin had 45% narrowing. 5. Want to reduce your risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones? Drink grapefruit juice. A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that when women drank 1/2 to 1 litre of grapefruit, apple or orange juice daily, their urinary pH value and citric acid excretion increased, significantly dropping their risk of forming calcium oxalate stones. 6. Not only are grapefruit rich in vitamin C, but new research presented at the 228th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society provides two more reasons to drink grapefruit juice: protection against lung and colon cancer. 7. In humans, drinking three 6-ounce glasses of grapefruit juice a day was shown to reduce the activity of an enzyme that activates cancercausing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. 8. In rats whose colons were injected with carcinogens, grapefruit and its isolated active compounds (apigenin, hesperidin, limonin, naringin, naringenin, and nobiletin) not only increased the suicide (apoptosis) of cancer cells, but also the production of normal colon cells. 9. Researchers also confirmed that grapefruit may help prevent weight gain by lowering insulin levels. 10. Naringenin, a flavonoid concentrated in grapefruit, helps repair damaged DNA in human prostate cancer cells (cell line LNCaP), reports a lab study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. The risk of prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the U.S, increases with age since the older we become, the more times our cells have divided and the greater the chance for DNA mutations to occur. DNA repair is one of the body’s primary defense mechanisms against the development of cancer since it removes potentially cancercausing mutations in cells. ONE WHOLE STALK OF CELERY: 1. Celery is a great choice if you are watching your weight. One large stalk contains only 10 calories! So, add celery to your shopping list and enjoy it in your salads, soups and stir-fries. 2. Celery reduces inflammation. If you are suffering from joint pains, lung infections, asthma, or acne, eating more celery will bring muchneeded relief. 3. It helps you calm down; celery for stress-relief? Oh, yes! The minerals in celery, especially magnesium, and the essential oil in it, soothe the nervous system. If you enjoy a celery-based snack in the evening, you will sleep better. 4. It regulates the body’s alkaline balance, thus protecting you from problems such as acidity. 5. Celery aids digestion: some say celery tastes like “crunchy water,” and that is the reason it is so good for your digestive system. The high water content of celery, combined with the insoluble fibre in it, makes it a great tool for easy passage of stool. Note: because celery has diuretic and cleansing properties, those with diarrhea should avoid eating it. 6. It contains “good” salts. Yes, celery does contain sodium, but it is not the same thing as table salt. The salt in celery is organic, natural and essential for your health. 7. It cares for your eyes. One large stalk of celery can deliver up to 10 percent of your daily need for Vitamin A, a group of nutrients that protects the eyes and prevents age-related degeneration of vision. 8. Celery reduces “bad” cholesterol: There is a component in celery
called butylphthalide. It gives the vegetable its flavour and scent. Guess what: this component also reduces bad cholesterol! A Chicago University research shows that just two stalks of celery a day can reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) by up to 7 points! 9. It lowers blood pressure: An active compound called phthalides in celery has been proven to boost circulatory health. Raw, whole celery reduces high blood pressure. 10. Celery can combat cancer: Two studies at the University of Illinois show that a powerful flavonoid in celery, called luteolin, inhibits the growth of cancer cells, especially in the pancreas. Another study suggests that the regular intake of celery could significantly delay the formation of breast cancer cells. ½ LEMON WITH PEEL: 1. Prevent kidney stones: Drinking one half-cup of lemon juice every day raises citrate levels in the urine. Studies have shown that this could protect against calcium stones in your kidney. 2. Soothe a sore throat: Mixing lemon juice with honey can help alleviate the discomfort that comes from a nasty sore throat. 3. Support weight loss: Beyond the old notion that the Master Cleanse was the only way lemons could help you lose weight, new studies have shown the ways lemon juice supports your goals. Lemon juice contains pectin, a soluble fibre that has been shown to aid in weight-loss. 4. Start your day right: Leave caffeinated drinks behind, and start your day off with hot water and fresh lemon juice to stimulate your digestive track and add vitamin C. 5. Stop an itch: When it comes to poison ivy or insect bites, the combination of lemon juice and cornstarch can help relieve some of the sting. 6. Aids in digestion: Even Dr. Oz is a big believer in the power of lemon juice for weight loss. He suggests drinking a mixture of lemon juice and flaxseeds in order to eliminate waste more quickly from your body. 7. Anticancer properties: Studies have supported the anticancer activity of citrus liminoids, compounds that protect your cells from damage that can lead to the formation of cancer cells. 8. Potassium power: Bananas aren’t the only way to get a big helping of potassium in your system. In addition to vitamin C, lemons offer 80 milligrams of this mineral that helps your body stay strong and nimble. 9. Bring down a fever: Forget the days of starving a fever! When your temperature goes up, drinking a lemon juice mixture can help bring your fever down faster. 10. Balance pH: While lemons may seem quite acidic, they’re a surprisingly good source of an alkaline food that can help balance your body’s pH.
½ RED, ORANGE OR YELLOW PEPPER: 1. They contain plenty of vitamin C, which powers up your immune system and keeps skin youthful. 2. Red bell peppers contain several phytochemicals and carotenoids, particularly beta-carotene, which lavishes you with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Studies show that it reduces ‘bad’ cholesterol, controls diabetes, brings relief from pain and eases inflammation... 4. The sulfur content in bell peppers makes them play a protective role in certain types of cancers. 5. The bell pepper is a good source of Vitamin E, which is known to play a key role in keeping skin and hair looking youthful. 6. Bell peppers also contain vitamin B6, which is essential for the health of the nervous system and helps renew cells. 7. Certain enzymes in bell peppers, such as lutein, protect the eyes from cataracts and macular degeneration later in life. 8. Red peppers contain almost 300 percent of your daily vitamin C intake. Besides being a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C is also needed for the proper absorption of iron. If you are iron deficient, try combining red peppers with your iron source for maximum absorption. 9. Red bell peppers are a great source of magnesium. This vitamin and mineral combination shows a decrease in anxiety, especially related to pre-menstrual symptoms. Vitamin B6 is also a natural diuretic, so try stocking up on red bell peppers to reduce bloating and prevent against hypertension. 10. Red bell peppers help support healthy night vision. Red bell peppers are high in vitamin A, which helps to support healthy eyesight, especially night vision. So when it comes to bell peppers, seeing red is a good thing! HANDFULL OF KALE, SPINACH AND PARSLEY: A bit of each. Spinach: Spinach belongs to the family of beets and chard and is known for its health benefits. Spinach juice is full of vitamins and essential nutrients such as manganese, magnesium, carotene, folic acid and Vitamins K, E, B1, B6, C and B2. The quantity of iron found in spinach is almost twice the www.thenewsyneighbour.com
quantity found in other leafy vegetables. Spinach’s green colour is due to the vegetable’s high chlorophyll content. The nutritional and health properties of spinach juice offer several benefits. It prevents cancer cells development and purifies the blood. The juice is highly alkalizing that helps maintain a good pH level in the body through deactivating excess acids. Juicing spinach also helps maintain a clean mouth and healthy gums. If you mix spinach juice with carrot juice, you can prevent the development of oral diseases and other ailments such as arthritis, ulcer, and anemia and nerve degeneration. Kale: Kale contains Vitamin A, trace minerals and calcium. The nutrients found in this leafy vegetable make it a great choice for treating some health issues. It has been shown to be valuable for healthier lymph glands, stronger bones and better eyesight. The chlorophyll in this vegetable helps oxygenate blood that improves circulation. Kale juice is 39

#11 - 55 Wheatland Trail, Strathmore best when it is mixed together with other juices like carrot juice or apple juice. Parsley Parsley is full of Vitamin A and Vitamin C, minerals such as potassium, magnesium and phosphorous and chlorophyll. Parsley juice is good for overall body cleansing and is especially great for cleansing the kidneys, urinary tract and liver. It’s an extremely concentrated juice, so it’s best to drink with other fruit and vegetable juices. ½ BEET: 1. Beets are high in many vitamins and minerals. Potassium, magnesium, fibre, phosphorus, iron, vitamins A, B & C; beta-carotene, betacyanine; folic acid. These are but a few of the many nutrients, vitamins and minerals that can be found in beets and beet greens. Beets are particularly beneficial to women who are pregnant, as the vitamin B and iron are very beneficial to new growth cells during pregnancy and replenishing iron in the woman’s body.

2. Beets cleanse the body. They are a wonderful tonic for the liver, works as a purifier for the blood, and can prevent various forms of cancer. 3. Beets help your mental health. Beets contain betaine, the same substance that is used in certain treatments of depression. It also contains tryptophan, which relaxes the mind and creates a sense of well-being, similar to chocolate. Beets can also lower your blood pressure. So if you’re already steamed about not eating beets, you can get a two-fer by diving into them right away. 4. Drinking beet juice may help to lower blood pressure in a matter of hours. One study found that drinking one glass of beet juice lowered systolic blood pressure by an average of 4-5 points. 5. Beets are a unique source of betaine, a nutrient that helps protects cells, proteins, and enzymes from environmental stress. It’s also known to help fight inflammation, protect internal organs, improve vascular risk factors, enhance performance, and likely help prevent numerous chronic diseases, as reported by the World’s Healthiest Foods. 6. The powerful phytonutrients that give beets their deep crimson colour may help to ward off cancer. Research has shown that beetroot extract reduced multi-organ tumour formations in various animal models when administered in drinking water, for instance, while beetroot extract is also being studied for use in treating human pancreatic, breast, and prostate cancers. 7. The betalin pigments in beets support your body’s Phase 2 detoxification process, which is when broken down toxins are bound to other molecules so they can be excreted from your body. Traditionally, beets are valued for their support in detoxification and helping to purify your blood and your liver. 8. If you simply throw away the green leafy tops to your beets, you’re doing yourself a disservice, as these are among the healthiest part of the plant. Besides containing important nutrients like protein, phosphorus, zinc, fibre, vitamin B6 magnesium, potassium, copper, and manganese, beet greens also supply significant amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and iron. 9. Beet greens actually have even more iron than spinach (another leafy green in the same botanical family) as well as a higher nutritional value overall than the beetroot itself. 10. If you need a boost to make it through your next workout, beet juice may again prove valuable. Those who drank beet juice prior to exercise were able to exercise for up to 16 percent longer. 1 ½” FRESH GINGER ROOT: 1. Ginger acts as a carminative (it prevents flatulence) and an intestinal spasmolytic (it soothes the intestinal tract). 2. Modern research supports its efficacy as a safe remedy for travel sickness, and for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. 3. Ginger also seems to have an analgesic effect on the joints. Gingerols, the potent anti-inflammatory compounds found in ginger, appear to reduce the pain, and improve the mobility, of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. 4. Some people find ginger helps them with the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection, bronchitis, cough, menstrual cramps, arthritis and muscle pain. 5. Compounds in ginger might protect against Alzheimer’s disease and inhibit aggregation of platelets in your blood, potentially lowering your risk of blood clots and stroke. 6. Gingerols, the main active components in ginger and the ones responsible for its distinctive flavour, may also inhibit the growth of human colorectal cancer cells, suggests research presented at the Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, a major meeting of cancer experts that took place in Phoenix, AZ, October 26-30, 2003. 7. The spicy component of ginger can also stoke your internal fire and rev up your metabolism. Metabolic function is boosted by spicy food, so your body will more efficiently break down fats and proteins, and convert your food into energy. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
8. Ginger is a natural anti-viral, so it will help fight off pesky illnesses and has been shown to heat up the human body to help induce fever. Fever is the body’s natural defense against cold and flu, and with a little help from this powerful herb, you can attack the root of your flu and find faster relief from your symptoms. 9. Lab experiments presented at the 97th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer, by Dr. Rebecca Lui and her colleagues from the University of Michigan, showed that gingerols, the active phytonutrients in ginger, kill ovarian cancer cells by inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) and autophagocytosis (self-digestion). 10. Ginger cannot only be warming on a cold day, but can help promote healthy sweating, which is often helpful during colds and flus. A good sweat may do a lot more than simply assist detoxification. German researchers have recently found that sweat contains a potent germ-fighting agent that may help fight off infections.

10. It is applied to the skin for skin conditions including acne, athlete’s foot, oily skin, dandruff, canker sores, warts, ringworm, rosacea, and psoriasis; as well as for insect and spider bites, gum disease, toothaches, muscle pain, and varicose veins. TURMERIC: 1. Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines utilize turmeric to clear infections and inflammations on the inside and outside of the body. But beyond the holistic health community, Western medical practitioners have only recently come on board in recognizing the benefits of turmeric. 2. Doctors at UCLA recently found that curcumin, the main component in turmeric, appeared to block an enzyme that promotes the growth of head and neck cancer. In that study, 21 subjects with head and neck cancers chewed two tablets containing 1,000 milligrams of curcumin. An independent lab in Maryland evaluated the results and found that the cancer-promoting enzymes in the patients’ mouths were inhibited by the curcumin and thus prevented from advancing the spread of the malignant cells. 3. The University of Maryland’s Medical Center also states that turmeric’s powerful antioxidant properties fight cancer-causing free radicals, reducing or preventing some of the damage they can cause. 4. While more research is necessary, early studies have indicated that curcumin may help prevent or treat several types of cancer including prostate, skin and colon. 5. Dr. Randy J. Horwitz, the medical director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the University Of Arizona College Of Medicine in Tucson, wrote a paper for the American Academy of Pain Management in which he discussed the health benefits of turmeric. “Turmeric is one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories available,” Horwitz states in the paper. He went on to cite a 2006 University of Arizona study that examined the effect of turmeric on rats with injected rheumatoid arthritis. According to Horwitz, pre-treatment with turmeric completely inhibited the onset of rheumatoid arthritis in the rats. In addition, the study found that using turmeric for pre-existing rheumatoid arthritis resulted in a significant reduction of symptoms. 6. Natalie Kling, a Los Angeles-based nutritionist, says she first learned about the benefits of turmeric while getting her degree from the Natural Healing Institute of Neuropathy. “As an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiseptic, it’s a very powerful plant,” she says. 7. Kling recommends it to clients for joint pain and says that when taken as a supplement, it helps quickly. She advises adding turmeric to food whenever possible and offers these easy tips. “Raw is best,” she said. “Sprinkling it on vegetables or mixing it into dressings is quick and effective.” 8. If you do cook it, make sure to use a small amount of healthy fat like healthy coconut oil to maximize flavour. Kling also recommends rub-

bing turmeric on meat and putting it into curries and soups. 9. “It’s inexpensive, mild in taste, and benefits every system in the body,” Kling says. “Adding this powerful plant to your diet is one of the best things you can do for long term health.” 10. An Effective Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Curcumin may provide an inexpensive, well-tolerated, and effective treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, recent research suggests. THEN I TAKE THESE WITH MY JUICE: 2 CAPSULES OF OMEGA-3 FISH OILS, 1 TABLET OF FOLIC ACID, TWO CAPSULES OF EVENING PRIMROSE OIL AND 1 TABLET OF B-12. OMEGA-3 FISH OILS: 1. Omega-3 fish oil contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Omega-3 fatty acids are very important in preventing and managing heart disease. 2. Findings show omega-3 fish oil may help to lower blood pressure. 3. Reduce triglycerides. 4. Slow the development of plaque in the arteries.
5. Reduce the chance of abnormal heart rhythm. 6. Reduce the likelihood of heart attack and stroke. 7. Lessen the chance of sudden cardiac death in people with heart disease. 8. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends everyone eat fish (particularly fatty fish) at least twice a week. While foods are your best bet for getting omega-3s in your diet, fish oil supplements are also available for those who do not like fish. 9. If you have heart disease, you may need even more omega-3 fatty acids. Ask your doctor if you should take higher doses of fish oil supplements to get the omega-3s you need. 10. The AHA says taking up to 3 grams of fish oil supplements daily is

considered safe. Don’t take more than that unless you discuss it with your doctor first. FOLIC ACID: 1. Folic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin. Since 1998, it has been added to cold cereals, flour, breads, pasta, bakery items, cookies, and crackers, as required by federal law. Foods that are naturally high in folic acid include leafy vegetables (such as spinach, broccoli, and lettuce), okra, asparagus, fruits (such as bananas, melons, and lemons) beans, yeast, mushrooms, meat (such as beef liver and kidney and), orange juice, and tomato juice 2. Folic acid is used for preventing and treating low blood levels of folic acid (folic acid deficiency), as well as its complications, including “tired blood” (anemia) and the inability of the bowel to absorb nutrients properly. 3. Folic acid is also used for other conditions commonly associated with folic acid deficiency, including ulcerative colitis, liver disease, alcoholism, and kidney dialysis. 4. Women who are pregnant or might become pregnant take folic acid to prevent miscarriage and “neural tube defects,” birth defects such as spina bifida that occur when the fetus’s spine and back don’t close during development. 5. Some people use folic acid to prevent colon cancer or cervical cancer. 6. It is also used to prevent heart disease and stroke, as well as to reduce blood levels of a chemical called homocysteine. High homocysteine levels might be a risk for heart disease. 7. Folic acid is used for memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease. 8. Age-related hearing loss, preventing the eye disease age-related macular degeneration (AMD). 9. Reducing signs of aging, weak bones (osteoporosis), jumpy legs (restless leg syndrome) and sleep problems. 10. Depression, nerve pain and muscle pain. EVENING PRIMROSE OIL: 1. Evening primrose oil is the oil from the seed of the evening primrose plant. Evening primrose oil is used for skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne. 2. The oil from the seeds and plant contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid. GLA is thought to play a key role in many body processes. But omega-6 fatty acids are also abundant in nuts and vegetable oils in the form of linoleic acid. 3. Some studies suggest it may help with the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, although further research is needed to confirm this. 4. Evening primrose is promoted as an herbal remedy for a very broad range of conditions, including dermatitis, inflammation, hyperactivity in children, high cholesterol, asthmatic cough, upset stomach, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetic nerve damage. Some proponents also believe the plant has anti-cancer properties. 5. Women use evening primrose oil in pregnancy for preventing high blood pressure (pre-eclampsia), shortening labour, starting labour, and preventing late deliveries. Women also use evening primrose oil for premenstrual syndrome (PMS), breast pain, endometriosis, and symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes. 6. They say it is good for high cholesterol and heart disease. 7. Some people also use it for leg pain due to blocked blood vessels (intermittent claudication). 8. It has been used for alcoholism and Alzheimer’s disease. 9. Some people use evening primrose oil for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). 10. And gastrointestinal disorders including ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and peptic ulcer disease. VITAMIN B-12: 1. Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system,
and for the formation of blood. It is one of the eight B vitamins. It helps in healthy regulation of the nervous system, reducing depression and stress. 2. Strict vegetarians, heavy drinkers and smokers, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and the elderly usually require vitamin B12 supplements. Sometimes our body, mainly our digestive system, is not able to absorb this vitamin well. This can happen when a person has pernicious anemia, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, bacteria growth in the small intestine, or a parasite. 3. Vitamin B12 deficiency causes tiredness, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, and megaloblastic anemia. Nerve problems, such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, can also occur. Other symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency include problems with balance, depression, confusion, dementia, poor memory, and soreness of the mouth or tongue. Vitamin B12 deficiency can damage the nervous system even in people who don’t have anemia, so it is important to treat a deficiency as soon as possible. 4. Vitamin B12 is found in animal products such as meat, shellfish, milk, cheese, and eggs. Most people who eat animal products are not likely to develop vitamin B12 deficiency anemia unless their bodies can’t absorb it from food. Strict vegetarians (vegans) who do not eat animal products and babies of mothers who are strict vegetarians are at increased risk for developing anemia and should take a supplement containing vitamin B12. 5. High vitamin B12 level in elderly individuals may protect against brain atrophy or shrinkage associated with Alzheimer’s disease and impaired cognitive function. As they get older, some people develop dementia. These people often have high levels of homocysteine in the blood. Vitamin B12 (with folic acid and vitamin B6) can lower homocysteine levels, but scientists don’t know yet whether these vitamins actually help prevent or treat dementia. 6. High-dose administration of Vitamin B12 has been additionally validated to stimulate the activity of the body’s TH1 suppressor T-Cells, which then down-regulates the over-production of the allergen antibody IgE in allergic individuals. 7. In infants, signs of a vitamin B12 deficiency include failure to thrive, problems with movement, delays in reaching the typical developmental milestones, and megaloblastic anemia. 8. It is needed to convert carbohydrates into glucose in the body, thus leading to energy production and a decrease in fatigue and lethargy in the body. 9. It helps maintain a healthy digestive system. Vitamin B12 also protects against heart disease by curbing and improving unhealthy cholesterol levels, protecting against stroke, and high blood pressure. Vitamin B 12 helps protect against cancers including breast, colon, lung, and prostate cancer. 10. It is essential for healthy skin, hair, and nails. It helps in cell reproduction and constant renewal of the skin. So, there you have it! I’m sure my daughter and designer will say, “Are you crazy?! This article is much too large to fit into the magazine!” But I will figure out a way to share this invaluable information with you. Perhaps the day has come to finally start my own blog; although, I don’t want to start something unless I’m sure I am willing to take the time to commit to it. We all know how that can go. But, one thing I know for sure, you will find this article on “The Newsy Neighbour” website www.thenewsyneighbour.com. Have the most wonderful, inspiring day, and remember: “The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.” ― Jordan Belfort Kathryn Hartwell References: www.whfoods.com, www.care2.com, www.mercola.com, www.medicalnewstoday.com, www.fitlife.com, www.mnn.com, www.wikipedia.org, www.nih.gov.com
SPF: Going Beyond the Letters to Prevent Skin Cancer Did you know that skin cancer is a cancer we can prevent? It is happening every day to all ages including children, and people in all walks of life. It doesn’t end there, because if skin cancer is not caught and treated, it goes inside our bodies and involves other organs. The good news is that we can actually prevent this type of cancer by using sun safe practices and products. SPF or Sun Protection Factor and the number (ex: SPF 60) It is the UVB rating ONLY! UVB rays burn and cause cancer. What about UVA rays? They cause cancer, sun allergy, brown spots, and aging. Often, protection for this type of ray is not included in sunscreen, or there is inadequate protection and labeling. These rays also travel through into your skin, and also through glass, windows and while in vehicles. Simply labeling “Broad Spectrum” or “UVA/UVB” is no longer enough. In fact, the packaging will be changing in 2015 when the criteria changes for UVA protection labeling. In the meantime, what do we look for to keep ourselves and our family safe? Types of Sunscreens: Ingredients - Mineral sunscreen takes care of UVB only. It contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which block out the UVB, but UVA travels through into the skin. - Carbon filters (often called ‘chemical’) are still very safe. They take care of all and are often combined with mineral sunscreens, and some are called Mexoryl technology, and most good UVA protection comes from ingredients such as Avobenzone, which absorbs into your skin and deletes the UVA rays, and also Octocrylene, which stabilizes the Avobenzone and makes it last. The higher percentage the better! All sunscreens need to be applied every two hours.
Lotions - Coppertone Oil Free SPF60 Waterproof - Coppertone Water Babies SPF60 - Life Sunthera3 SPF100 - Ombrelle Light Texture SPF60 with Mexoryl Water Resistant
Check your body over once a month, making note of any odd or new moles. Keep an open relationship with your doctor. Visit them promptly with concerns. Avoid UV exposure whenever possible. Use self tanners and spray tans. Visit websites like www.myskincheck.ca.
Also, please feel free to come into Strathmore Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique for $5.00 OFF any Derm Centre Sun Products from June 1-31, 2014. Just mention this article!
Suggested use of sunscreens: - Apply every two hours and again after swimming or sweating when you are outdoors. Put it on your ears and back of your neck and all exposed skin. Protect lips and wear sunglasses if you can. - Apply generously and rub into the skin; use approximately an ounce for body and a teaspoon for the face. Always check expiry dates. Wear a hat and drink water often. Avoid the peak hours from 1-4pm when possible. - Often, we can switch our day cream out for sunscreen to avoid feeling like there is too much on our skin! There are many great non-greasy formulas available.
Spray-Ons With spray-on sunscreen, make sure you rub them in, otherwise protection is scattered and uneven. - Coppertone Water Babies SPF60 Spray - Life Sunthera3 Sensitive Skin SPF60 Spray
Feel free to book a complimentary personal sun care consultation, should you have any questions. You can call 403-901-2451 and press 42 for the Boutique. Have a sun-safe and fun summer! Wendy Mockford
Some suggested products: - Derm Skincare – great product, and works well for sensitive skin also. - Vichy – all products meet 2015 criteria - Bioderma – all products meet 2015 criteria - La Roche Posay – all products meet 2015 criteria.
Phone: 403-901-2451
In fact, if you still feel that a mineral sunscreen is what you are looking for, they have a brand new innovation in mineral sunscreen that blocks UVB and antioxidants to neutralize UVA rays in the skin. It has made the 2015 labeling criteria! So really, exciting for mineral buffs! Budget brands that have great ingredients, but are good if your budget is small:

Detecting a Vision Problem in Your Child It is important to look for signs of a possible vision problem in your child. Many vision problems do not become noticeable until a child is over 18 months old. Knowing what to watch for can result in a vision problem being caught early to provide the most successful treatment. Routine eye exams are advised in all children before school age. Many children with reduced vision in one eye can appear to have excellent vision. This makes it very difficult for a parent to spot any signs of a vision problem. Every child should have regular eye exams (within the first year of life, at age 2 or 3 years, just before entering school, at age 10 or 11 and in the older teens) to detect and treat any problems (Note: Alberta Health Care covers vision appointments up to age 18). A common vision problem in children is strabismus, or crossed eyes. Strabismus tends to run in families. If you have a family history of this condition, it is important to watch for signs of the condition in your children (see ‘Signs your child may have vision problems’). Many children develop a strabismus even though there is no family history of strabismus. Treatment will be discussed with your eye care professional. Signs your child may have vision problems: - Holds printed material very close to his/her eyes to read - Sits very close to the TV or computer screen. - Has difficulty seeing distant objects. - Eyes do not appear to move together properly. - Complains of blurred vision or double vision. - Has one eye that tends to turn in, out, up or down. - Tends to close one eye. - Turns or tilts his/her head to see.
- Eyes may jiggle or shake. - Has one pupil that appears abnormal. - Either eye is red, itchy or painful. - Complains of frequent headaches. - Discomfort with bright light. If you think that your child has a vision problem, have your child seen by your family doctor. If there is a problem, a referral will be made to an eye care professional. Do not assume your child will grow out of a vision problem they appear to have. It is important that your child be treated for vision problems as early as possible to provide the most successful treatment. Internet Resource: www.eyesite.ca

Spring Landscaping Project
If you’re at all like me, all winter I dream about changes to do to my yard in the spring and Pinterest does not help. All those beautiful pictures of back yard oasis’ that are only possible if you live way south of where we are, where snow is just a thing people talk about
my husband is good natured enough to keep running to Rona for me.
and some have never seen – can you even imagine such a thing? Well, I really outdid myself this year! First, I had this great idea that I wanted to plant potatoes this year because I’m trying to go completely organic with all the vegetables I eat. I have read all sorts of articles about all the chemicals in the food we eat and there is really no way of getting around it unless you grow your own food or purchase pure organic crops, which is sometimes difficult to do. I started by digging out a big patch of my lawn – if you have ever tried digging out lawn, you know it is probably the worst job in the universe. Well, it seems because I have quite a few big trees in my backyard (which equates to lots of roots), this just was not going to work. Raised garden beds were my only option.
Now, let me tell you: these really aren’t that tough to build – I did it all by myself; you don’t need to get too fancy. Just use corner brackets. I used 2’ x 8’ pressure treated spruce, my handy dandy screw gun, side strapping for the inside of the bed and galvanized screws. You also need a saw to cut the boards. The rest is pretty self-explanatory. If I can do it, you can do it. I could not help myself I had to include my pretty begonias.
I surveyed my yard, deciding where to place these raised beds to receive the optimal sunlight. Then I figured out how many boards to purchase. I went back to the store twice, as once I got going on this project it took on a life of its own and my plans kept changing and my vision kept growing and growing. I ran out of corner brackets once, the strapping for the inside of the boards so they don’t bow out when you add the dirt and, of course, screws – thank goodness
I love working in my yard and I feel such a sense of accomplishment when I’m able to build something all by myself! See? Just because you’re a girl doesn’t mean you don’t know how to cut a board or use a screw gun! Truthfully, it’s really not that hard. Step aside, men! My next project is a raised patio!! VEGETABLE GARDEN
Your Summer Garden: Plan for Petunias It’s never too early to start planning your summer garden! Whether you are filling containers and hanging baskets or filling your garden beds, petunias are a wonderful way to add colour all summer long. These annual flowers grow well in our southern Alberta climate and are available in almost every colour - pink, purple, white, violet, and yellow. Whatever you choose, they are best panted in large groupings where the plentiful blooms are sure to please. As you plan your flower beds and containers, remember that petunias prefer full sun. In the extreme heat of the summer, partial shade will help your containers from drying out and your blossoms wilting. When you are buying petunias, take care to look at the growth habit. Petunias can grow upright in a mound or you can get varieties that spread or cascade. ‘Wave’ or ‘Cascade’ petunias can be used as ground cover in your garden bed or they are stunning trailing over the sides of your containers and hanging baskets. To keep the plants flowering all summer, dead flower petals can be pinched off (also known as ‘deadheading’) to encourage new growth. Visit your local greenhouse where they will have many varieties of petunias for all your garden plans. Source: Wikipedia and Gardening.About.Com

Fan verses true convection? Induction verses natural gas? Self-clean or steam clean?
Selling…?? Guess what sells? Surprising nobody – it’s sex. However, fear sells better than sex and by combining the two, you have a marketing winner. It’s the same old line, if you don’t accept/believe in/buy this, you will age quicker, grow unusual appendages, gain weight, lose eyesight, be looked down on by everyone, get robbed and sold to interstellar aliens in your sleep, etcetera, etcetera. You get the idea. There are some who go the other way, who tell you it’s mainly good with ads that are relaxed and kind of nice. You’ve seen these ads; fairly simple and gentle life lessons with a sense of humour. Enjoy your life and don’t worry about the very latest media reports, (they seem like re-runs anyway), on crime trends or near-earth asteroids or whatever is the flavour of the moment.
Here’s a radical idea: rather than worry about or be afraid of not having the latest and the greatest in our homes, what do we actually use and need? we want them to do! Do we really want a computerized fridge that orders groceries for us by monitoring what we put into it? Sounds interesting, but what about stocking up ‘on sale’ ice cream? And if you thought hacking into your computer was a problem, try your fridge (fear alert). Staying with kitchen appliances, there are a lot of choices out there and it’s good to have an idea of what’s important for our use. Even bigger, we need to know what all these things (features) are and what they really do. Fan verses true convection, does it matter? And if you’re never home and only cook a pizza once a week, do you need it? Induction verses natural gas? Sautee or flambé much? Self-clean or steam clean? Infra-red grilling? Six or eight pass broil?
They can explain what features, new or current, are truly beneficial and by knowing your needs, explain what appliances will work best for your household. It’s all good. As always – be informed and ask questions. For a good summer read and interesting look at experts, ‘Future Babble’ by Canadian journalist Dan Gardner & Prof. P. Tetlock (also born in Canada). Check out www. skepticnorth.com and www.scitechdaily.com for thought provoking news and views. Pjs Appliances See ad on previous page
It’s the same with your fridge; it freezes what should be frozen, keeps everything else cold and makes ice cubes or chilled & filtered water if you want. New fridges can do this pretty energy efficiently and consistently. The fridge part (where you go into most often) can be on the top and easy to reach. This is simple and easy. It works and a cold refreshment is a happy place on a hot summer day. Then we ask, what is high speed cooling and do we need it? Holiday mode? Air filtration? The fridge to book its own service call if it senses a problem (do we choose the servicer)? Fluff/debris resistant condenser – really a bonus? Take solace in the words of a famous guide for the galactic traveler: don’t panic. Drop into your local independent retailer and ask about what you like and actually use in your appliances. They know the products and what all the features will (and won’t) do. 52

Are You Working With The Right Team? A s a first-time home buyer, to say the task of purchasing one’s first home can be a little daunting could be putting it mildly. Making sure you are surrounded by the right team of professionals can make all the difference from start to finish. So where do you start?
Now that all of the conditions have been met as per your purchase contract, you will need to get property insurance. Speaking with the company that holds your car or life insurance may be an excellent start. If you are looking to see if you can acquire better coverage at a lower cost, you may wish to seek the service of an insurance broker. Like a mortgage broker, they will shop your application to several different companies, looking for the best price and coverage.
Getting pre-approved for your mortgage financing is a critical first step. By doing so, you not only know what your purchasing power is, but you also have the knowledge of knowing your mortgage rates are going to be held for a minimum of 90 days, which will protect you if rates do go up during that time. As well, most realtors and/ or builders prefer if you have already been pre-approved for your mortgage.
Once you have negotiated a purchase contract and have acquired a full approval on your mortgage financing, you will need to seek the services of a real estate lawyer. Like any professional, not all are created equal, so calling around or getting referrals from friends and family could be very helpful. Getting quotes and finding out if they have time to work with you is very important, as purchasing a home can be a time-sensitive situation. Some lawyers offer an “all inclusive” fee for purchasing a home, while others may have a standard fee plus additional costs depending on the complexity of the purchase and the requirements of the financial institution providing the mortgage.
As soon as your mortgage pre-approval is in place, you will likely want to work with a realtor to help you find your first home. Based on your budget, the location, style, size and other requirements you may have for your future home, a real estate professional will be able to help you find the perfect place. They will also help you with the negotiation process that will undoubtedly occur with most purchase transactions. After the purchase price has been agreed upon by all parties involved, you may choose to get a home inspection done for your own piece of mind as part of the conditions of buying that home. By having a home inspection completed, you will know if your future home will require either immediate or future costly repairs. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
By working with the right group of people to assist you with your first home purchase, you will find that if or when the time comes to sell and/ or purchase another property, you will be that more confident going through the process once again. As always, I welcome any questions or comments you may have regarding the information contained in my articles. Until next month…this has been a mortgage moment with The Mortgage Mogul. Jason Eldridge - Mortgage Specialist See ad above. 53
Technology and
Real Estate
Every time we turn around, technology is changing and improving. It’s enough to make your head spin if you’re not “tech savvy”. That’s where a professional real estate agent come in. They have the tools and are “up” on the latest trends in technology and how it relates to selling or buying a home. What was house hunting like not so long ago? Cruising for hours in search of “for sale” signs, looking for that one perfect home; it was a lot of work. Buying a house is no easy task, but the Age of Information has brought huge changes to industries the world over, and real estate is no exception. There are now so many tools to aide us in the house-hunting process, that we can complete much of the work from home; whittle away at the details in our spare time and browse for residences at our leisure before getting into the car and starting the home tour. In fact, all these new options for home shopping can be a bit overwhelming. There are so many smart phone apps and websites waiting to be used, that picking out the ones worth your time can be a challenge. Here are some favourite tools that harness the power of modern technology. 1. Mobile App This little gem on your phone or tablet gives you the ability to pull up all listings in the neighbourhood that you’re driving through. To support a local business, check out www.the-reps.ca – it’s a free app! 2. Google Maps Directions and street view (source: Google). Type in an address in any populated area, and Google Maps can likely pinpoint local businesses and give you a good look at it with satellite imagery. Find this app in your “App Store” on your phone or tablet. 3. Mortgage Calculator Crunching mortgage numbers on paper is no fun. There are a lot of big numbers involved; how long the mortgage will last, what the interest rate will be, how much the house costs, etc. Why try to calculate it the hard way when there are applications built specifically to make mortgages easier to understand? 54
There are dozens of free, easy-to-use mortgage calculators on smart phone platforms that make mortgage calculations a snap. For example, the free Simple Canadian Mortgage Calculator App (find it in your App Store). 4. Walk Score This free app tells you how far away places are in your neighbourhood. Want to know how close the schools or playgrounds are? Walk score. 5. Municipal Websites This is a Google search that can typically guide you to find out more about the area you are considering, like animal bylaws, tax information, council meeting minutes, garbage pickup, development plans, etc. Check out www.strathmore.ca, www.calgary.ca, www.wheatlandcounty.ca, or www.chestermere.ca. Technology is our friend, and some of it can be hard to understand. If you have already loaded these apps while reading this article, good job! You are well on your way. But, if some of this information is daunting, feel free to contact a licensed Real Estate agent, who should be more than happy to visit and give you a hand getting started.

More Randomness Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for, in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it! ~ Ellen Goodman To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist. Showers are incredible! Does your skin feel sticky? Shower! Is your hair greasy? Shower! Do you need to escape your family? Shower! Physical touch makes you healthier. Studies show that massages, hugs, and hand-holding reduces stress and boosts the immune system. When I say that I won’t tell anybody, my best friend doesn’t count. Stop telling others about your problems. 20% don’t care and the other 80% are glad you have them. As hard as it may be, establish eye contact with everyone you meet. It’s one of the best ways to make people take you seriously. When you’re at a restaurant, wash your hands after ordering. The menu is generally the dirtiest thing you can touch. Putting your finger on someone’s lips and saying “Shhhh... Not another word” is super romantic. But the police won’t think so. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

How often do you look at your roof? How often do you look at your roof? If you’re like me, never. Inspecting your roof regularly and making little fixes as needed can prevent some costly repairs down the road. It is also a key selling feature if you are planning to sell your home. According to the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA), you should be inspecting your house in the spring and then again in the fall.
A-Plus Developments comes Highly recommended by Local builders!
The best place to start is in the attic. Check to make sure the roof is not sagging anywhere, there are no signs of leaking or dark spots and that you can’t see the sunlight coming through anywhere. When you get up on the ladder and look at the exterior of the
According to the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA), you should be inspecting your house in the spring and then again in the fall. roof, make sure none of your shingles are buckling. When shingles buckle, that is typically from the hot air in the attic forcing the shingles to move. Buckling is a good indication that the roof is poorly ventilated, which can take years off the life of the roof, as well as drive up cooling costs. Make sure the roof isn’t cracked, torn, bald or missing shingles anywhere, as well as signs of moisture, rot or mould. While you are up there, clean out your gutters and downspouts. If they are full of debris, water can get trapped in there and cause you all kinds of problems. You want to make sure the water can exit as easily as it comes in.

Check in the attic for sagging, moisture, dark spots and light coming through and check the exterior for: Buckling, cracks, torn or missing shingles, signs of moisture, rot or mould. Check the granule loss on the shingles. This is most common on older houses, but it can happen with newer houses as well if a defective roofing product was used. This isn’t always the case; extreme weather, such as hail, can also cause some granule loss. If you are unsure, call a professional to come inspect the damage. Granule loss should be addressed. Go for your simplest option first if you have some of these damages; don’t assume your whole roof needs to be replaced. Often it can be repaired rather than replaced. Contact your licensed local roofing contractor, or three – to find out what they think and to get an estimate.

Mind you, it may be wise to consider doing the entire job while the crew is onsite with the scaffolding, ladders and equipment if you figure more repairs are to come shortly down the road. It may be less expensive than doing one part now and the remainder later. If you do decide to replace your whole roof, get educated on the materials available. There may be only specific materials available or recommended for your area. For example, wood and asphalt shingles aren’t especially fire resistant – and this could be a problem if you live near a lot of dry brush and trees. Slate, tile and metal are more expensive materials, but they are worth the investment because of the extra protection they offer. If snow loads are an issue, you might want to consider a durable and lightweight standing-seam metal roof. But before setting your heart on slate or tile -- and we know they look really gorgeous -- realize that these are very heavy materials. Some house framing just isn’t strong enough to support the extra weight of this sort of roofing. If you see a problem or suspect your roof needs some repair or replaced, don’t procrastinate. If ignored, the problem could get a lot worse than it is. Start checking your roof on a regular basis with the observations skills listed in this article. Deal with it all now, before you have no choice. Also keep in mind, the “do it yourself roofing” isn’t your typical “do it yourself” project, especially if you are taking off old roof. This can also be very dangerous; leave it to the professionals.

footage and finishes within the space. This includes all pantries and closets, as you want to present the highest storage space possible. Balance “Clean” and “Lived-In” I know I just mentioned above to eliminate all clutter and personal belongings above, but you still need to give your potential buyer a direction – a direction in how to visualize and utilise each space. Each room must have a clear intention, such as an office, spare room or an additional children’s room. Décor items such as fresh bedding, throw cushions, vases and flowers will create a lived-in look, yet styled and edited to enhance your home for the next viewer to see its amazing potential to buy!
Boost Your Curb Appeal Most potential buyers will do a quick drive-by before determining whether they want to book a viewing. First impressions are everything and you need to grab their attention before they even come into the house. Make sure all driveways and patios are newly stained and washed, as well as windows and siding. Clear and visible house numbers are a must and add some colour with fresh shrubs and flowers.

Deep Clean This is the most important step of all in prepping for potential viewings. Clear all surfaces of any unnecessary things and make every surface sparkle. This will present your home with its best foot forward. Clear All Clutter Wires, pictures, knickknacks and any personal affects must be removed. This provides the client with a space that they can imagine their own belongings in, as well as enhances the actual square

It will also be a permanent page on our website. Your ad will be linked to your website for one full year!!
Book your directory spot NOW! It will be published in our July 2014 Issue. Deadline is June 25th @ 5:00pm ONLY $85.00 or $30.00 when you purchase a business card or larger ad size in the same issue.
